Introduction

Good aim is one of the indisputable fundamentals of a successful golf swing.  That’s why every year we see numerous training aids at the PGA Show claiming to be the key to good aim.  Most are nothing more than fancy alignment sticks, but the Tour Aim caught my eye as something more.  After naming it one of the most interesting things I saw at the Show [read more HERE ], I got one to test for myself.

Set Up & Ease of Use

When I unboxed my Tour Aim, I found the device and four white alignment sticks.  There’s a card with a QR code leading to instructional content, but I think most seasoned golfers will find this trainer intuitive .

The Tour Aim is a plastic rectangle that measures approximately 14.5″ X 3.5″ X 0.5″.  Laid flat, it has five holes that run through it: one in the center, one on each edge, and a pair roughly 4.5″ from each side.  Additionally, there are five holes in the “face” labeled Driver, Fairway, 5I, 8I, and Wedge.  Stood on end, there are two holes at the bottom surrounding a semi-circular cutout and another hole centered above the cutout.

The included 45″ alignment sticks slide easily into all of the designated holes.  Other alignment sticks that I own fit as well, though some were a tough fit on the hole above the putting cutout.  Setting up the Tour Aim for any of its various uses takes only a few seconds .

I did view the instructional videos [find them HERE ] because I like to be thorough and wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing any functionality.  The videos are each two to five minutes long and feature instructor Kyle Morris.  Kyle has good energy on camera, but, in my opinion, he’s selling the Tour Aim more than teaching you how to use it.  This isn’t meant as an insult; it’s just a reflection of the fact that the Tour Aim requires little explanation .  That said, perhaps I’m being jaded: newer golfers may benefit from a clear explanation of the Tour Aim’s functions.

Effectiveness

There are several uses for the Tour Aim, but the essential one is creating a good practice station .  Slide an alignment stick through the center hole and point it at your target.  From there, you can put sticks in any of the other four holes to align your feet and provide further reference for aiming your club face.  Now you have a perfectly aligned station for hitting balls so you can focus on your swing.

This is better than using alignment sticks alone for several reasons .  First, the centered stick removes any questions about where you’re aimed or where to set your foot line.  As I discussed in my lesson on how to use alignment sticks [find it HERE ], this process normally requires some guess-and-check.  The Tour Aim removes that.  Additionally, the Tour Aim gets your alignment sticks perfectly parallel and keeps them there .  Anyone who has used alignment sticks knows the frustration of accidentally nudging a stick (especially on mats) and needing to waste time fixing it.  That’s now a thing of the past.

Sticking with the full swing, the Tour Aim has five holes for creating different swing planes.   They range from 48 to 64 degrees, driver to wedge.  Swinging under or over these sticks in your backswing or follow through can be a very useful way to reshape your swing.  I also can’t overstate the value of the Tour Aim for helping you set up this drill consistently.    Finally, I’ll note that this is one of the functions that works indoors and outdoors.

Finally, seemingly as a throwaway feature, the Tour Aim becomes one of the best putting trainers I’ve used.  The functionality is very simple – set up two parallel sticks to stand the unit on edge and putt through the semi-circle.  You can also have an elevated stick to check that your eye position is consistent (above).

The hole is 2.25″ wide , which is a bit more than half the size of a traditional golf hole .  Depending on your putting skill, you may need to stay very close to the trainer to consistently roll the ball through.  I found that I was mostly successful at three feet when I was paying attention, but the gap is small enough that you won’t make many if you’re daydreaming.  As much as I love the Tour Aim for hitting balls, the putting trainer has become my favorite and most used feature .

The Tour Aim Golf training aid checks a lot of boxes for longevity.  First, it’s small and light , meaning it can live in your golf bag.  Second, it has a lot of uses , and all of them set up quickly .  Finally, it’s versatile – you can use it on mats, on grass, indoors, and outdoors .  This is a trainer you can, should, and will use every time you practice.

The value here is sky high .  The base price of $75 is below average for a training aid, and this trainer’s versatility, effectiveness, and ease of use are well above average.

Hi Matt, I purchased the precision impact trainer that you reviewed about 18 months ago. Fortunately after only a few range sessions with I managed to seller it on with only a little loss as it was expensive. I found it very uncomfortable to wear and the Velcro that wrapped around your finger ls was very poorly designed. There has been other variations of this type of training aid over the years, so we all know this isn’t a new concept. It’s just nobody has managed to construct it in a comfortable and usable way. That is until the pro sender came out. Being from the UK it worked out expensive what with shipping and import taxes. However it had been worth every penny. The build quality is first class, and finally they have made a wearable training aid that is actually comfortable to wear. This really is a game changer which actually is two training aids in one as there is the addition of the ball which helps keep your arms connected throughout the swing. This is basically based on the successful Tour striker ball training aid. For me the best thing about this product is that it helps keep your right hand in extension into impact then again at the end of your follow through. Yes this product actually works. After watching PGA Tours Pros on the range for years now. When you tend to see a few of them with a training aid and then see them still using it months and even years later. That is a good indication that what ever it is they are using is helping them and they are the best balls strikers in the world. One of the biggest problems we see in golf is players swinging through and hitting the ball on a poor trajectory. That is a common curse of many players and can cause things a nasty slice or hook. So, getting the plane of your swing right is absolutely imperative to making a good connection on the golf ball and hitting it straight. We think the best way to see if an alignment stick is any good is by using it . That sounds like an obvious statement to make but it is only by using a product a lot, and often, that we can gain an idea of usability, versatility, durability, value for money, and above all else, does it actually have a positive impact on our game? We use products at home, at the range, on the putting green, etc to see if specific training aids are actually worth buying. We should also mention that no manufacturer can pay for a good review because our team tells it how it is. 

There are many different kinds of alignment sticks on the market and each one comes with a different set of specifications that can change the way you train with them. For example, some may be foldable while others may be super long. Others may come with special clips, while other products may come with phone holders for selfies. Depending on what you use your alignment stick for, size generally is one of the defining factors in what kind of rod you should buy. Most rods come in at over a meter long in size and that's probably the best length that allows you to use the stick for everything from driving to putting. You may also want to consider getting a smaller rod that might be more easy to carry, but that leads me on to my next point which is....

2. Portability

Yes this is perhaps the second most important thing to consider when buying a new golf alignment rod, as let's be honest, carrying around a huge pole in your golf bag isn't always the most ergonomic way to play golf is it? I personally prefer to use the rods that will fold down and slip easily into a pocket in my bag, but that depends on your preferences and what kind of bag you use as a golfer. One point to note is that there is a greater chance you will damage your alignment rods if you carry them in a club divider with your clubs, as opposed to folding them down and storing them in a pocket in your bag - so keep that in mind. 

This might not be a big deal for some golfers, but for me is a deal breaker. Having a brightly colored rod can help me see and visualise the area in which I shouldn't move my golf club. Seeing, for example, a bright neon green color in your eye line is a great way to help you keep the club on the right plane. 

4. Durability

As with everything in golf, things can break easily. That's why its wise to ensure you're purchasing a set of alignment sticks that are strong and durable. This is particularly important considering you're going to be swinging your club nearly 100mph near to them, with it being very easy to miss-time your swing and connect hard with one of your alignment sticks. For that reason - think about how sturdy your sticks are!

Particularly for when the weather is cold, always look out for sticks that come with a spiked end. This is important as to complete the majority of drills you'd use an alignment stick for you need to stake them into the ground. Having a pointy end on your sticks can therefore make life a lot easier for you when you come to practice! Regardless of how you like to practice, the Maxfli golf alignment sticks are going to be a great addition to the effectiveness of your practice routine. 

SKLZ Golf Alignment Sticks Training Aid

Best Premium Golf Alignment Sticks

• Great for consistency 
• You can use it for a wide range of areas in your golf game
• Safety cap on one end pointed on the other
• Priced a bit higher than other choices

SKLZ is a company that makes quite a few golf training aids, and they are all very well received by golfers. The SKLZ Golf Alignment stick comes in a pack of three, and you are going to get three 48 inch fiberglass rods . 

The rods are made of high quality material that is resistant to breaking. You should understand that many golfers break alignment rods from time to time, and this is very understandable.

Sometimes when you are working on your swing, you will accidentally hit the stick, and it will snap. The SKLZ seems to hold up quite well to this. 

Our favorite feature on the SKLZ trainer is the nine rings that are on the center of the stick. You can use these rings to help you make sure that your setup and ball position are perfect over and over again.

This is the best golf alignment stick for those that are precise when it comes to their golf game.

Best Folding Golf Alignment Sticks

• Easily fold up

• Can collapse at times when putting it in the ground.

If you don’t want to see, a golf alignment stick hanging out of the top of your bag, then you may want to consider a folding model like the PrideSports. The PrideSports Golf Alignment stick is a collapsible model that is 48 inches in length. 

You are still going to get the benefit of a full length golf alignment stick, but you won’t need to worry as much about the storage. The PrideSports golf sticks are a very bright in color, which will help you focus on the golf skill and task at hand. 

A golf alignment stick that blends in with the grass is not going to give you as much of a clear direction as to what to do. With this pack, you will get two sticks that fold into a small carry tube.

The end of the stick has a rubber safety cap to make sure that you won’t hurt yourself if you are putting them in your bag or using them on your downswing.

The other side of the stick is pointy, so it will stick in the ground and hold the angle of the shaft that you need. 

If you are new to the world of golf training aids and alignment sticks, you may be reluctant to invest too much money.

How To Use Golf Alignment Sticks 

Golf alignment sticks are quite simple to use and incorporate into your daily routine. With a golf alignment stick, you simply put it on or in the ground to work on your alignment, swing path, and more. 

If you plan to use the golf alignment sticks to help with overall aim and alignment then the sticks will stay on the ground. Place one by your feet and another on the other side of the ball to show the path towards the hole.

This is a small but growing trend on tour driving ranges—players explain why

PGA Tour players tend to move in packs. Once one player starts doing something a little differently, the peers will take notice. Once that player starts playing well, suddenly you'll start seeing their methods pop up anyway.

Alignment sticks are hardly anything new on the PGA Tour, which is something amateur golfers should take note of. You can't walk more than a few feet on a tour driving range without seeing a player practicing with at least one. At an amateur driving range, you'd be lucky if you found one at all.

Traditionally, players set an alignment stick alongside a player's toes, which should run parallel to the target line. Line up your toes against the stick, and you'll prevent a stance that's too open or closed.

But recently, I've noticed those alignment rods on tour getting further from the feet, and closer to the golf ball. At times, the alignment rod is almost flush against the clubhead as they're hitting the ball itself.

There are two reasons for this.

1. Aim the clubface

The first, and most obvious, is because it helps aim the clubface.

Where your feet are pointing matters, obviously, but the direction the clubface is pointing at impact is the primary factor in where the golf ball is going to go. AKA, if the clubface is pointing to the left, the ball will probably go left.

Placing an alignment stick, or a club, flush with the clubhead, helps pros check and make sure their clubface is pointing in their intended direction. Both the stick and the clubface should be pointing at their intended target.

"I hit draws, and my tendency is to aim too far to the right, and start hitting big draws," Eric Cole explains. "I focus a lot on my aim. It's a simple thing that helps me hit better shots."

2. Obstruct a severe swing direction

Outside of simple clubface awareness, players use an alignment stick on the ground, near the golf ball, to monitor their golf swing's direction .

If golfers tend to swing too far in-to-out, they'll place the alignment stick slightly inside the golf ball. If they tend to swing too far out-to-in, or over-the-top, they'll put the stick, or club, slightly outside the golf ball.

In both cases, the goal is simple: To swing so you miss the stick, which means your swing path is landing in a relatively neutral spot.

"I've always responded really well to using obstacles, and forcing my body to figure out how to swing around them," Justin Thomas said.

Ryan Palmer adds:

"Every time I go and practice, I practice with a purpose. When I go to the range...I'll make sure I'm going there with the drive and desire to work. If I don't feel like I'm ready to practice and I'm just kind of tired or my mind is thinking of something else, I'll go home. I don't go practice or hit balls because I feel like I have to," Palmer says. "This is a small thing that helps me do that."

Any standard 5/16 (.3125") diameter alignment sticks work with Tour Aim.  Some alignment sticks have plastic covers on both ends and unless those are removable they will not work with the Tour Aim.  Our alignment sticks are specifically designed to work best in Tour Aim
