TaylorMade Spider Interactive Putter Is A Real ‘Blast’

The Spider putter, TaylorMade’s most popular putter in company history and one of the most popular putters on the PGA TOUR in 2016-17, takes the next step in its evolution with the incorporation of Blast’s motion capture sensors in TaylorMade’s first totally-integrated golf sensor product in company history.

Spider Interactive automatically captures valuable stroke metrics in a seamless, non-intrusive design built into the top of the putter’s grip. TaylorMade has also co-developed a matching mobile app — available on March 1 for iOS and in Q2 2018 for Android users — which takes the user on a simple, intuitive journey to become a better putter. Spider Interactive measures key putting stroke metrics including timing (backstroke time, forward stroke time, tempo), impact stroke speed and face rotation. Users will be able to easily analyze details of their putting stroke and track progress over time with performance history and interactive graphs, along with tiered training modules and drills to help improve putting. The app will also feature video recording and playback capabilities so users can review and analyze their strokes. YouTube golf instructional personalities Me & My Golf will have tips and tutorial videos on the app for further developmental content.

The Spider Interactive Powered by Blast putter is constructed the same as TaylorMade’s renowned Spider Tour putters; a 304 stainless steel frame combined with a lightweight 6061 aluminum body enabling weight to be positioned at the extremities, providing improved stability and high MOI. The Spider Interactive Powered by Blast putter also incorporates TaylorMade’s popular, tour-proven milled aluminum Pure Roll™ insert with a gunmetal finish to promote better forward roll, increased directional accuracy and improved distance control. Further, the sensor’s remarkably light weight does not impact the performance of the Spider Interactive putter.

Included with the Spider Interactive is a Blast charging pad, micro USB cable, sensor installation key, live sensor, yellow filler plug (inserted for conforming use in tournament play) and storage pouch.

The Spider Interactive Powered by Blast is available starting March 23, 2018

TaylorMade 2023 Spider Tour Putters Review

Dave Usher tests the new TaylorMade Spider Tour putters to see what golfers can expect from this reimagined range

TaylorMade 2023 Spider Tour Putters Review

One of the most iconic putters in golf has had a reboot. The new and improved TaylorMade Spider Tour offers maximum forgiveness, a soft feel off the face and new alignment markings on the crown which make it very easy to line up. You should strongly consider the Spider Tour if you are thinking of changing your putter.

Premium feel and performance

Excellent visual alignment

Impressive forgiveness on off-center strikes

Only available in one color

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

When a putter design works it will stick around for a long time. For example, the Ping Anser design is still popular on Tour even now, several decades after it first appeared on the scene. The TaylorMade Spider is a mere youngster in comparison but it too is an iconic design that will no doubt be found in golf bags for many years to come.

Spiders always feature prominently in any list of the best putters but when a design is as popular as this it can sometimes be difficult for a brand to come up with new selling points and improvements year on year.

Over the years TaylorMade has made lots of little tweaks and added plenty of wrinkles to its ever expanding range of Spider putters, and its latest offering includes a reboot of the original classic design - the Spider Tour. For fans of the original - and there are many - this is an exciting development. Spider putters are among the most versatile putters out there and are popular with Tour Pros as well as being one of the best putters for high handicappers .

The original Spider Tour is one of the most recognisable putters in golf. There have been different variations over the years but the mission statement remained constant - to deliver high-MOI performance as well as great stability, consistency and forgiveness. The Spider Tour putter comes into its own on off-center strikes, as it helps maintain the direction and control of the putt. This makes it one of the most forgiving putters on the market.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putters

The new Spider Tour Series features two classic head shapes as well as two new models. In addition to the Tour and Tour X, there is also a Tour V and Tour Z. There will be a fifth model too, as the Spider Tour Series S arrives next spring.

The Spider Tour with its iconic head is the epitome of high-MOI performance and delivers stability, consistency and forgiveness. Spider Tour’s stable design is especially impactful with off-center strikes, as it helps to maintain the direction and control of the putt.

The Spider Tour X design is one of the best TaylorMade putters and has been made famous by Rory McIlroy , who uses a Spider X Hydro Blast with a flow neck. The Tour X combines the performance of a blade with the benefits of a mallet design. With TSS weights positioned farther forward, it delivers increased face rotation while maintaining 5,000 MOI for enhanced stability compared to blade putters .

Spider Tour Z is one of two new shapes in the Spider Tour Series. It features a wing-shaped back and low-profile design for a comfortable setup that precisely frames the ball. This mallet putter is strategically weighted to promote face rotation and a blade-like feel with maintained stability.

Finally the Spider Tour V. Another new design which features a modern streamlined construction with a compact shape that makes it ideal for golfers seeking enhanced control.

TaylorMade Spider Tour V Putter at address

TaylorMade Spider Tour V Putter at address

Each model is available in two hosel options; double bend and short slant. The double bend is face balanced while the short slant gives a slight toe hang (29° on the Tour and Tour Z, 30° on the Tour X and 32° on the Tour V). If that’s confusing to you, then you can read our handy guide about whether you need a face balanced or toe hang putter .

The two things that always stand out to me with Spider putters are the soft feel and the forgiveness and these new putters deliver on both counts.

The soft feel comes from the white TPU Pure Roll insert. This is a throwback to the original model as more recent Spider putters have been fitted with the Pure Roll2 insert, which has a slightly firmer feel to it. The face features grooves angled at 45° for optimal forward roll, while the white insert provides a nice symmetry with the white True Path Alignment aid on the top of the crown.

I particularly like the True Path Alignment as it’s a definite upgrade on the alignment aid on some previous Spider models and makes it much easier to start putts on the correct path.

Interestingly, each putter in the Spider Tour range boasts a different CG (center of gravity) location to fit a wide variety of putting styles and preferences.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putter

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putter at address

I tested both the Spider Tour and the Spider Tour V putters and put them up against my TaylorMade Spider EX putter which I have had in the bag for a couple of years. I was interested to see how the newer models compared and on initial testing on my artificial turf putting surface at home I found both newer models to be ever so slightly more forgiving on off center strikes than my Spider EX, while I also managed to find the sweet spot more frequently.

This could be due to the tech advancements made in the new Spider Tour putters or it could just be that - for whatever reason - I made better strokes than I did with my Spider EX. It’s difficult to know for sure but either way I suppose it’s a win for the new models.

While I love the look and feel of both the Spider Tour and the Tour V, I definitely prefer the Tour based on how it looks behind the ball. It has a slightly bigger footprint and a little bit more going on at the back of the putter, which gives the impression it will be more forgiving on heel and toe strikes than the other models in the range. Even if that it is not the case and it is just a placebo effect, anything that boosts confidence has to be a good thing. It’s always important to have a putter that suits your eye.

TaylorMade Spider Tour Putter

Testing the TaylorMade Spider Tour putter at Effingham Golf Club

I used the Spider Tour for nine holes at Effingham Golf Club and it certainly lived up to expectations. I hit virtually every putt out of the center of the putter which is unusual for me as I have a tendency to hit a good percentage of putts off the toe.

My lag putting was pretty good (by my mediocre standards anyway!) while I felt confident on the short ones due to how stable the putter felt on takeaway and through the ball. The alignment aid definitely helped me start the ball on the right line on putts inside six feet, which are often a big problem for me. I’ve since practiced quite a bit with both the Tour and the Tour V and both performed impressively, although as mentioned above the slightly larger footprint of the Tour suits my eye better and will probably be very popular with golfers who lack confidence on the greens.

All four putters in the range offer something a little bit different so which one you choose is entirely a matter of personal preference. Try them all, see which feels best suited to your stroke. It isn’t a case of one being better than the other as these are all premium putters with enough variety to cater for most golfers, but I expect the Tour will have the most shelf appeal due to its iconic design and the nostalgia aspect it carries with golfers of a certain age.

I love the look the gunmetal PVD finish which TaylorMade claim adds durability and will help prevent the scratching and general wear and tear that putters tend to suffer from. The original Spider Tour did tend to scuff up quite a bit so this will be a welcome improvement.

The gunmetal is the only color option available in shops but if you want something different then for an extra cost TaylorMade do offer a number of customisation options on its website, with silver, black and rose gold alternatives available along with lots of other custom choices on face inserts, back badge, sole plate, shaft, grip and head cover.

The new TaylorMade Spider Tour models will be in shops from October 27, priced $349.99 in the US and £299.99 in the UK.

Dave is a distinctly average golfer with (fading) aspirations to be so much more than that. An avid collector of vintage Ping putters and the world's biggest Payne Stewart fan, in 2021 Dave turned his front garden into a giant putting green to work on the weakest area of his game. Progress has been slow but steady! In addition to his work reviewing golf gear and writing features for Golf Monthly and T3 , Dave is the founder of the  Bang Average Golf website .

Dave’s lowest round is a one over par 73 around Kirkby Valley Golf Club in 2018, which included a bogey on the 18th to ruin the one and only chance he’ll ever have of shooting an even par or better score.  That errant tee shot on 18 does not still haunt him to this day though, in fact he hardly ever thinks about it.  No, honestly, he doesn’t. Not at all. Never.

Dave splits most of his golf between Hurlston Hall Golf Club in Ormskirk, Lancs, and Berrington Hall Golf Club in St Helens and has a handicap that fluctuates between 9 and 12, largely depending on how poor his putting is.

The clubs Scottie Scheffler used to win the 2024 Memorial

W ith a win at the Memorial, Scottie Scheffler became the first player to notch five wins before the U.S. Open since Tom Watson in 1980. That’s when Sansabelt pants and persimmon woods were the order of the day. Although Scheffler’s equipment is decidedly more modern, his winning score of eight under par was old school, matching that of 1980 Memorial winner David Graham.

Muirfield Village was at its testing best. Still, Scheffler knew Sunday was going to require some fortitude.

“This is one of those places where there's certain holes where you just got to step up and hit a great shot,” said Scheffler after the third round. “There's a lot of spots out there where if you play too conservative, you can get into some pretty tough spots pretty quick, so just do your best to execute and when you need to, just really hit great shots.”

RELATED: Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the Memorial Tournament

One of those great shots was a 16-foot par putt at the par-3 16th that kept him one in front of Collin Morikawa, who must be getting tired of facing Scheffler on Sunday (see: Masters, RBC Heritage). Scheffler changed to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X X1 mallet putter from his Scotty Cameron blade at the Arnold Palmer Invitational after doing extensive testing at home and has been on a heater ever since. The putter is a half-inch longer than his previous gamer and has an L-Neck hosel and TaylorMade’s True Path alignment aid on top with a full line sightline on top. The putter has 3 degrees of loft with a lie angle of 72 degrees. The insert is an 80/20 TaylorMade Pure Roll insert and the grip is a Golf Pride pistol.

Although Scheffler putted well enough to post positive strokes gained/putting numbers (picking up almost two shots on the field), the approach game was more quintessential Scheffler as he ranked first in strokes gained/approach the green, gaining a remarkable 13-plus strokes on the field. He also topped the field in greens in regulation.

Scheffler’s TaylorMade P7TW irons are based off Tiger Woods’ muscleback blades and have True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips.

Muscleback blades? Maybe Scheffler is more 1980s-like than we think.

Steve Stricker’s misfortune is Ernie Els’ stunning gain at American Family Insurance Championship

Daily Wrap Up

Change Text Size

In a word, the finish to the American Family Insurance Championship was, well, shocking. There stood Steve Stricker, one of the best putters in the game, the hometown hero, standing over a 3-footer on the first playoff hole against Ernie Els to extend their playoff to another hole.

Steve Stricker, 3 feet ? A mere formality, right? Around the green, fans were buzzing, expecting another bonus hole.

But this is golf, and golf can be cruel just as often as it wants to follow the anticipated script. With Els already in for par, Stricker pulled the putter back to match him, kept the blade slightly open, and his par putt carrying too much pace spun off the right edge of the hole. There would not be another playoff hole. No more golf on this day.

This was Stricker’s party, for sure, played in front of robust and cheerful Wisconsin galleries in Stricker’s adopted hometown of Madison. But it was Els, the big South African, a four-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Famer, who was making away with the title, his second in as many weeks.

Els, 54, was delighted to win again, but his initial cold-bucket splash of emotions was no different than any other person who had witnessed the final scene.

“What can I say?” Els told Golf Channel’s John Cook just off the edge of the 18th green, the title now his. “I’m just shocked right now. I really feel for Steve. What a great guy.”

Ernie Els’ Round 3 winning highlights from American Family Insurance Championship

Els won for the fifth time as a member of PGA TOUR Champions, adding to the championship he captured in Des Moines (Principal Charity Classic) one week earlier. Stricker, the host who won the American Family Insurance Championship in 2023 and was well down the road to defending, was playing the event for the eighth time; he never had finished worse than T11. He also lost in a playoff in 2019, when fellow Madison resident and longtime pal Jerry Kelly won.

“He feels bad winning like that, and I feel bad giving it to him like that, but he played well,” said Stricker, who goes back 30 years with Els. “He strung together, I think, three birdies on that backside when he had to and he kind of answered the call when he had to, because I had a three- or four-shot lead and kind of just let it slip away.”

Els and Stricker began the day tied for the lead, and each shot 3-under 69 on Sunday, getting to 12-under 276 for the tournament. Australia’s Cameron Percy closed with 67 to finish alone in third, three back, his best showing on PGA TOUR Champions. Stephen Ames (67), who overtook Steven Alker for the lead in the season-long Charles Schwab Cup standings, tied for fourth at 280 along with Doug Barron (66) and Thomas Bjørn (69).

For a good spell early on the final nine on a wind-swept, difficult final day at University Ridge Golf Course – winds were challenging, gusting past 30 mph and adding speed to the already-slick greens – Els appeared to be playing for second place. He had nothing going with the putter on the first nine, shooting 1-over 37, and Stricker was doing Stricker things, pulling away. When Stricker made birdie at the 12th hole, he led by four shots with six to play. It was clear who this party would belong to ... right up until it wasn’t.

Els did his part by hanging around. He gave himself a pep talk to stop putting so defensively, and soon the putts fell in bunches.

“I didn’t make anything,” Els said. “I was so defensive. The wind was blowing me all over, and I’m 6-(foot)-4. I said to myself, start making solid contact ... stop trying to guide it in there.

He birdied the par-3 12th and added another at the short par-4 13th, where he smoked a drive that finished only 40 yards short of the flag.

Stricker, runaway 2023 Player of the Year on PGA TOUR Champions, had done plenty of good things this season – he had counted top-10 finishes in all but one of his 2024 starts – but something was missing from the body of work. A prolific winner since joining the over-50 circuit in 2017, Stricker had yet to win this season.

A year ago, Stricker won the American Family Insurance Championship by five shots, coasting to the finish. It seemed a natural place for Stricker to end what has been his longest winless string since joining PGA TOUR Champions: eight starts without a trophy.

Even after Els’ back-to-back birdies, Stricker still led by two with five holes left – but things turned quickly at the 398-yard 14th. Stricker short-sided himself in a front bunker off an approach from the middle of the fairway just 114 yards from the flag, leading to his first bogey of the day. Els poured in a 12-footer for his third consecutive birdie, and suddenly both players were 11 under. Els and Stricker traded pars at 15 and birdies at the par-5 16th, and they still were tied, three shots clear of the field, with two to play.

There was little to separate the two. And then came one poor par putt from a guy who has an expansive history of making most everything he looks at on the greens. In a word, shocking.

Even Els, now the victor, did not know quite how to react. Said Els, “I just gave him a hug really, and I just said, ‘I'm sorry.’”

For Els, Sunday marked his fourth consecutive start where he entered the final round with a chance to win. At the Regions Tradition and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, it didn’t happen for him. But the last two weeks in Iowa and Wisconsin, it did. He’s the first Champions Tour player to win back-to-back since, you guessed it, Stricker a year ago. Ah, golf. For Els, what has sparked the difference?

“You've got to just play proper golf.” Els said, “and you've got to make some putts at the end of the day. I feel a lot better with my putting. Playing with Steve Stricker, you feel like you don't putt very well (he laughs). I know I'm putting well; I'm striking it good. I'm just hanging in there and trying to get my chances where they come.”

After a successful eight-year run at University Ridge, the American Family Insurance Championship will move across town to TPC Wisconsin, where Stricker has helped with a course redesign.

Els said he will be there for the tournament in 2025 – possibly under a new format – and he knows Stricker will be there, too, bouncing back as strong as ever, as he usually does, and always has. Right now, though, the six-time winner from a year ago is fighting to find that first victory of ’24.

“He's the best putter we have probably in the world,” Els said of Stricker, “and as I said, conditions were tough. The short putts when that gust comes, it throws you off a little bit, so it can happen to the best of us.”

Back in 2005 there was a restaurant across from The Grand baja (now Barcelo). It had great food. Does anyone know if it is still around?

Yep, it is still there. In my opinion, there are much better choices to eat in San Jose.

Any suggestions from your side of where to eat? We like local, but inexpensive and casual

Guacamayas, Los Michoacanos, Taqueria de Mexico, Tacos Rosy, Taquista, Mariscos Sandy, Damiana, Restaurant Jazmin......that's a start.

Five Things to Know About the 2024 Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give

Lpga foundation wins hashtag sports award.

  • meijer-lpga-classic
  • Tournament News

Leona Maguire

The 10th edition of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give gets underway Thursday at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Mich. That’s where 144 of the top-ranked players in women’s golf will square off for a $3 million purse. But that’s not the only prize on the line as players wind into the closing weeks of qualification for the upcoming Olympic games. Here’s a closer look at the five things to know about this week’s LPGA Tour stop.

Leona Maguire defends

There are just courses where certain players tend to play better than others, for whatever reason. For Leona Maguire, she’s found a home away from home of sorts at Blythefield Country Club where she’s been a fixture year after year at the Meijer LPGA Classic. When Maguire played the course for the first time in 2021, she finished runner-up. The following year, she lost out in a three-person playoff to once again settle for a share of second. But the third time was the charm for the Irishwoman, who in 2023, left nothing to chance with her final round 64 to win by two strokes ahead of Ariya Jutanugarn, who carded back-to-back weekend rounds of 66. Maguire has had a slow start to her season thus far, recording a single top 10 with her second place finish at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards where she lost in the championship match to Nelly Korda.

Year after year, the best in the women’s game have made the trip to Blythefield Country Club and they’ll make the trip once more this season. World No. 1 Nelly Korda headlines the field as she is poised to make her first start since a surprising missed cut at the U.S. Women’s Open. Korda will have good vibes to lean on as she makes her return to Michigan as she was not just the winner there in 2021 but also finished in a tie for second in 2022. She’s joined in the field by Minjee Lee, who held a share of the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Women’s Open but faded on the final day to a tie for ninth. Celine Boutier, the No. 3 ranked player in the world, will make her first start in Michigan since 2022. Boutier has yet to crack the top 30 in her prior appearances at Blythefield. Atthaya Thitikul, who played her way to the top of the leaderboard at the U.S. Women's Open, is also in the field in Michigan. Thitikul has four top 12 finishes in five starts so far this year after she missed the beginning of the season due to a left thumb injury.

Lilia Vu returns

For the first time since March, Lilia Vu will tee it up on the LPGA Tour. Vu has been sidelined for the last several months as she’s dealt with an ongoing back injury, which has bothered her throughout her career. Vu was on site, prepared to defend her title at the Chevron Championship in April, when she withdrew prior to the start of the first round as her back began to flare up while warming up ahead of her opening round. Vu released a statement following the withdrawal, saying she would be seeking doctor’s treatment and recommendations on the next course of action. The former world No. 1 has had a slow start to the season with a single top 10 finish at the Honda LPGA Thailand and two other WDs. Vu last competed in the Meijer LPGA Classic in 2022, when she was tied for 12th for the week.

10th Anniversary

A decade of events staged at Blythefield Country Club have produced an impressive list of champions who have hoisted the trophy in Michigan. Returning to the field again this year is Lexi Thompson, a winner in 2015, who announced during the U.S. Women’s Open that she will retire from competitive golf at the end of the season, is likely making her final appearance this week in Michigan. Also in the field this week is the 2016 champion, Sei Young Kim, along with two-time winner Brooke Henderson who was victorious in 2017 and again in 2019. With Henderson’s second win in Michigan she captured her ninth career victory on the LPGA Tour and became the winningest golfer, male or female, from Canada. Back again this season is Jennifer Kupcho as well, who defeated Maguire and Korda in a playoff to win in 2022.

The Meijer LPGA Classic is one of just two remaining events for players to make up ground in the Rolex Rankings and secure a spot in the upcoming Olympic games in Paris. Which players will represent their respective countries is determined based on the world rankings, with just 60 players earning a spot in the field. The top two ranked players from each country will qualify to participate, with countries having up to four players inside the top 15 in the world rankings, eligible to send all four. Teams will be finalized on June 24, upon completion of next week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
