How to Get From Bucharest to Bran Castle (The Easy Way or the Hard Way)

How to Get From Bucharest to Bran Castle (The Easy Way or the Hard Way)

Bran Castle looms large in many people’s ideal Romania itineraries. Who can blame them? Few castles have such a prominent place in our collective unconscious — even if the Dracula connection is tenuous at best and deceitful marketing at worst.

Still, out of my two weeks traveling around Romania, visiting Bran Castle was an obvious standout. And while I think Bran Castle is best visited while you’re on a larger Transylvania itinerary , including cities such as Sibiu , Brasov , and Targu Mures, I can also understand if you want to do a day trip from Bucharest to Bran Castle if you have limited time in Romania.

Doing a Transylvania day trip from Bucharest is certainly doable, but it’s not easy. The problem is that Romanian transportation is not the most reliable. On my two weeks traversing the country, we slid down one hill due to shoddy brakes before luckily coming to a stop, went on a number of extremely bumpy roads, and ended up delayed for hours due to a shepherd protest.

So, while going from Bucharest to Bran Castle in a day via public transit is definitely doable, you’re going to want to wake up early and pack a bunch of patience with you (also bus snacks, which equal patience in my mind) since things in Romania tend not to ever go quite exactly as planned.

And while generally we are independent travelers who prefer to forge our own way than to take a day tour, due to the distance and logistics of getting from Bucharest to Transylvania, we think that Transylvania tours from Bucharest actually offer great value as a day trip option compared to the cost (and headache) of DIYing it all.

How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle by Public Transit (The Hard Way)

Bucharest - Romania Bucharest Nord train aerial

There are a few options when it comes to getting from Bucharest to Bran Castle via public transit.

The best and fastest option would be a combination of train + taxi. Get the train at Bucharest North (Gara de Nord) station. You can buy tickets online here , but it must be six hours before departure, or you can buy them at the station.

If buying online, be sure to enter the names in the Romanian (București Nord for Bucharest; Brașov for Brasov) or it won’t work.

The train times vary between 2.5 hours and 3.5 hours, depending on when it departs and what route it takes. I’d recommend taking the 6:05 AM, 7:00 AM, or 8:05 AM train to give yourself enough time. There’s a big gap between the 8:05 AM train and the next one at 9:55 AM, which is not ideal.

However – even though it says 2.5 hours, don’t rest on that! Sometimes, Romanian trains experience a significant delay, so go early to account for any issues.

tour bucharest to bran castle

A ticket should cost 48.6 lei (a little more than $11 USD) as of July 2019, but you’ll get a 5% discount if you book online. I haven’t booked train tickets online before, so I’m not sure if you’d have to print out your ticket or if you could show it on your phone, so keep this in mind when booking.

For a return ticket, you are looking at about $22.50 USD per person for the train plus taxi fare to and from Bran.

I had private transportation between Brasov and Bran so I didn’t need to make this trip myself, but I’ve heard that a taxi between Brasov and Bran costs 80 lei ($19 USD) if you’re a good bargainer. To go back, it should be the same, though if you want the same driver you will also have to pay for his waiting time. Some taxi drivers may refuse to make the trip unless you pay them to wait and use them on the return journey too, so keep this in mind when bargaining with taxis.

tour bucharest to bran castle

Using train + taxi for a solo traveler, all in you’re looking at $60.50 USD to do a DIY day trip from Bucharest to Bran Castle, not counting your transit to & from Gara de Nord, meals, entry tickets, or any price gouging you may experience from taxi drivers.

Theoretically, if you’re on a budget, there is also a public bus from the Brasov bus station which goes to Bran. The bus should take about 45 minutes and leaves once an hour on weekends or once every 30 minutes on weekdays. It costs about 10 lei, ($2.50).

However, the Bus Station (Autogara 2) is quite far from the train station, just over 3 kilometers away (about a 45-minute walk), so you’d need to walk a while or take a taxi between the train station and the bus station, so keep that in mind when deciding between bus and taxi.

If you do it this way, walking between the bus station and the train station, you could go from Bucharest to Bran Castle for as little as $27.50 USD, again excluding your transit to and from Gara de Nord, meals, and entry tickets.

How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle by Rental Car (The Medium Way)

Theoretically, Bucharest to Bran Castle is only 187 kilometers – not so bad, right? Well, due to road conditions in Romania (and egregious traffic leaving Bucharest), that’s probably closer to 3 hours.

You could rent a car for the day and do an independent trip to Bran Castle from Bucharest, which would make for an adventure, but with rental prices, insurance, and gas, it probably doesn’t make sense economically unless you can gather up a group of 3 or more adventurers to make the trek with you.

However, if you do this, you can stop at a number of other awesome Transylvania sights along the way like Rasnov Citadel, Peles Castle, and more, which makes the journey more worth it.

Pro Tip: We’ve rented cars dozens of times in the Balkans through various search engines and have settled on Discover Cars as the best car rental search engine – it searches over 500 trusted rental companies to find the cheapest price for your rental! Compare prices for car rental in Romania here.

How to Get from Bucharest to Bran Castle (The Easy Way)

If ultimately, your goal is to visit Bran Castle from Bucharest as a day trip in the most stress-free manner possible, a tour is the way to go.

Taking a Bran Castle tour from Bucharest is pretty inexpensive, especially considering that most Transylvania tours from Bucharest don’t just include Bran Castle but also Peles Castle (arguably even more beautiful than Bran!) and sometimes Rasnov Citadel as well. If you’re traveling solo and would have done the taxi option, it’s about the same price (but a lot less hassle) than DIYing it. For those reasons, I highly recommend an organized day trip to Transylvania from Bucharest.

tour bucharest to bran castle

If you go for a Bucharest to Bran Castle day trip, I strongly recommend this well-reviewed tour run by TravelMaker, which has over 600 positive reviews with an average score of 4.6/5 stars.

It covers both a Peles Castle and a Bran Castle, aka Dracula Castle, tour (including entry fees, but you’re on your own for lunch). You’ll also get some time to walk around Brasov city before returning to Bucharest in the evening. Check reviews, availability, and prices here.

Note: As per the tour website, “Between 16 September and 15 May, Peles castle is open from Wednesday to Sunday only. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Rasnov Citadel will be visited instead”

So if visiting Peles is a major draw for you when considering your tour, and you are traveling in the off-season, be sure to plan your departure day accordingly, avoiding Monday and Tuesday. Rasnov is really cool, but Peles would be my choice if I had to choose.

This tour looks cheaper on paper, but since it does not include entry fees, you will pay a bit more.

Another choice is to take a tour that covers Bucharest to Bran Castle, Peles Castle, and also Rasnov Fortress (which is awesome and worth a visit!). This is the tour that I recommend that covers all three , although please note when visiting that you will pay to pay for your own entry fees, which will be an additional ~100 lei (40 for Bran, 30 for Peles, 28 for Rasnov) or $24 USD.

tour bucharest to bran castle

Ultimately, the choice is yours – whether you want to spend more time in Brasov exploring the Old Town, or to see a third castle (Rasnov) which is in a bit of decay compared to Bran and Peles, but ultimately super cool as well!

Personally, I’d pick the tour covering all three castles since each offer something super unique, but if I wanted more time in Brasov I’d pick the first option .

Bran Castle Cost & Operating Times

Entry to the castle costs 40 lei (about $10 USD), though students are eligible for a discount. From the months of April through September, Bran Castle’s hours are 9 AM to 6 PM. (Mondays throughout the year, it opens at noon, not 9 AM).

In the off-season, from October through the end of March, the hours are 9 AM to 4 PM, so keep this early closing time in mind if doing the public transit choice or personal car rental option from Bucharest.

Organized tours will keep in mind the opening hours and make sure you don’t miss it.

What to Pack for Bucharest & Transylvania

If you’re planning a trip to Romania, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind.

– A physical guidebook, in paper or on Kindle . We love Lonely Planet Bulgaria & Romania for this region and strongly recommend it to supplement blogs. Blogs are great, but a combination of a blog and a guidebook is key to having the best access to information easily at your fingertips.

– Layers in case of poor weather. We had really bad luck with weather our last trip in Romania – it snowed before Halloween! We always recommend bringing a rainproof jacket like Allison’s personal favorite, the Marmot PreCip , which she has had for years and has held up well to countless abuse over 3+ years of travels. (Here’s a men’s version, too!)

– A water bottle with a filter . While generally, the tap water in big cities in Romania is drinkable, such as in Bucharest and Brasov, we generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant! We recommend the GRAYL water bottle – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

– Motion sickness pills . Romanian roads are winding and road conditions are not good – not even getting into the drivers, either. If you have a weak stomach like we do, save yourself and bring some non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

– Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, TP & other Balkan transit needs. Bathrooms in the Balkans tend to be… how can we say it?… not so well-stocked. Save yourself the disappointment and bring a mini-rescue pack of wet wipes & hand sanitizer .

– Travel safety items . We think Romania is very safe to travel, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Some people like to carry money belts , but neither Stephanie or I use these. Instead, we both carry the same PacSafe anti-theft backpack . It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as its neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

Where to Stay in Bucharest

Overnighting in Bucharest and not planning to stay in Brasov? Here are our tips for where to stay in Bucharest.

Budget:  After having a bad experience with the owner of Pura Vida and Little Bucharest, I cannot recommend them to other travelers, especially solo women travelers. Instead, I’d suggest checking out  Funny Hostel (check availability and reviews here)  or  Friends Hostel (check availability and reviews here) .

Mid-range:   Omega House  is a gorgeous boutique hotel (which also has a few dormitory style rooms if you are a solo traveler with a slightly higher budget). The hotel has beautiful design and a spacious co-working space where you can make use of of Bucharest’s speedy, best-in-Europe WiFi. It is near Piata Romana, my favorite part of Bucharest (and where many of the best coffee shops, bars, and restaurants are located). With a 9.0 rating on Booking.com  (read reviews, see photos, and check availability here) , I’d recommend this for travelers who want a step above a standard hostel without paying a ton

Luxury:  I stayed at the  Grand Hotel Continental  during my first Bucharest trip and I can’t recommend it enough if you have the money to spare. The room was elegantly furnished and the bed was ridiculously comfortable – the comforters and sheets were just so lush. The bathroom and room itself were crazy large and spacious (though the bathroom was oddly modern, to the point where the sink was really confusing and barely usable). I loved being a 10-minute walk away from the Old Town. I actually don’t recommend at all staying in the Old Town itself, because it’s super loud with drunks at all hours of the night. It comes highly recommended by me and others agree, considering it  has a 9.0 rating on Booking.com from others (check reviews and availability here) .

Don’t Forget about Travel Insurance!

I’m sure you’re aware that  travel insurance  is a good idea for traveling in Romania (or really, any part of the world)! Stephanie and I have both been paying customers of  World Nomads  for the last three years. We love the peace of mind it gives us in case of emergencies, accidents, illnesses, theft, or trip cancellation or disruption.

While the Balkans are perfectly safe to travel around, there’s always a risk inherent in everyday travel, so it’s better to play it safe. The saying goes “if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel” is true!

If you’re staying in Bucharest for more than one day, you should go on a day trip to Bran Castle. The renowned Dracula’s Castle is one of Romania’s main tourist attractions, but it’s not just the spooky legend that makes it a place worth visiting.

While Bran Castle may not have anything to do with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the castle is a gorgeous place to visit. If you’re flying the Bucharest, you can easily visit Bran Castle on a day trip, either on your own or with an organized tour.

Below I’ll get into more details about Bran Castle and the various ways you can visit from Bucharest. But if you’re just here for the tour options, here are the two most popular guided tours you can join from the capital:

About Bran Castle

Bran is a small town in Transylvania, a short drive southwest of Brasov. The town lies in a natural mountain pass in the Southern Carpathians, providing spectacular mountain landscapes. The presence of this pass was decisive in building what would become the famous Bran Castle.

In the 13th century, Teutonic Knights settled in the region and decided to build a fortress in Bran, which the Mongols later destroyed. In 1377, the Hungarian King Louis the Great allowed the people of Brasov to start the construction of a stone castle in Bran.

By 1388, the castle was complete. Standing tall at the top of a cliff, Bran Castle overlooked the surrounding hills. The castle functioned as a fortress and was instrumental in the attempt to stop the Ottoman Empire from expanding.

During the following years, soldiers and mercenaries inhabited the castle. The King chose the lord of the castle, whose role grew in importance to the point of holding the title of Vice-Voivode of Transylvania (local ruler).

In the 15th century, the Voivode of Wallachia Vlad Tepes, also known as Vlad the Impaler, passed through Bran on his way to attack Brasov. This is pretty much the only relation between Bran Castle and the historical figure who would later inspire the fictional character of Dracula.

Bran Castle, Transylvania

But while we’re on the Dracula topic, maybe you didn’t know the fictional character was inspired by a living, historical figure. Vlad III, or Vlad Tepes earned himself the title of Vlad the Impaler due to his favorite execution method, which he reserved for his Ottoman enemies.

Vlad Tepes was already known as Vlad Dracula in the 15th century. His father was known as Vlad Dracul after becoming a member of the Order of the Dragon. However, Dracul means “the devil”  in Romanian, so you can see how that contributes to his reputation.

Long story short, Dracula was inspired by Vlad the Impaler, who had little to do with Bran Castle. Nevertheless, sometime after Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published, word started circulating that Bran Castle was the source of inspiration for Dracula’s residence in Transylvania. I’m sorry to say that was just a tourism-driven rumor. But it worked!

Bran Castle is among the most renowned landmarks in Romania. While the iconic character may have initially driven tourists to visit the castle, the landmark is pretty impressive, even without any relation to Dracula. So be sure to add it to your itinerary!

Visiting Bran Castle from Bucharest

You have a few options for visiting Bran Castle from Bucharest, including renting a car, using public transportation, and joining a tour. If you’re short on time, the easiest option is to join an organized day trip from Bucharest, which usually includes Bran Castle, Peles Castle, and a tour of Brasov. More on that in a minute.

Bran Castle

If you want to visit Bran Castle on your own, the fastest way is to rent a car in Bucharest and make a day trip out of it. Renting a car in Bucharest can be quite affordable, depending on the time of year you visit and when you book your rental.

Discovercars has a wide range of choices, with prices starting as low as 7$ per day. With full coverage, you can rent a car for just over $20 a day, which can be very convenient if you’re traveling with a partner or in a small group.

The trip from Bucharest to Bran by car takes just under three hours. Check out rental car options on Discovercars.com .

There is no public transportation from Bucharest to Bran, but you can travel to Brasov and catch a bus to Bran from there. You can get to Brasov from Bucharest by either train or Bus. The train ride takes between 2.5 and 3 hours to get to the central station in Brasov. The train ticket costs between 7€ and 16€ for one way, depending on the train. You can buy tickets online on CFR Calatori .

Alternatively, you can get a bus from Bucharest to Brasov, but I don’t really recommend it. Buses take at least 2.5 hours if there is no traffic. Furthermore, they depart from bus stations far from the city center, so they aren’t so convenient. Not to mention they cost way more than trains (around 100 RON, or 22€). I highly recommend the train instead. While it’s not so fast, you enjoy beautiful views around Valea Prahovei.

From Brasov’s train station, you can catch a local bus or taxi to the bus station (Autogara 2) and then hop on the bus to Bran. You can get the tickets to Bran directly on board the bus for less than 2€ (between 7 and 9 RON). Be sure to have cash, as there’s no way to pay by card. The bus stops in the center of Bran, a short walk from the entrance to Bran Castle.

Keep in mind that the entire trip can take well over four hours from Bucharest to Bran. I recommend spending a night in Brasov for a more relaxing experience. Plus, Brasov is a gorgeous city (and my hometown, but I promise I’m not biased). If you need more convincing, check out these 15 reasons to visit Brasov .

Brasov, Romania

Whether you travel solo or with a small group of friends, one of the best ways to visit Bran Castle from Bucharest is to join a guided day tour. Not only is this option stress-free, since you don’t have to worry about catching trains and buses, but you may also meet new people and learn more about the castle and the area from your guide.

Most tours departing from Bucharest include a stop at Peles Castle, one at Bran Castle, and a quick visit to the historical center of Brasov. These tours are quite packed, but you get to explore a few highlights of Transylvania in just one day. Here are two of the most popular tour options:

Bran, Peles, and Brasov Tour 1

Bran, Peles, and Brasov Tour 2

Both tours have virtually the same itinerary and price, so just check the one available on your desired date. You’ll depart from Bucharest early in the morning and get back in the evening. The arrival time can vary depending on traffic, which tends to be an issue during the weekend and holidays, so if you can avoid these times, please do!

I only chose the most popular tours to include here, but there are countless more. Check them out on GetYourGuide .

Is Bran Castle worth visiting?

Bran Castle is absolutely worth a visit. Aside from the basic castle visit, you can try out a few more activities in the castle and the surrounding area. Firstly, check out the other activities within Bran Castle. These include the visit to the Medieval Torture Machines exhibition and access to the Time Tunnel. But let’s see these one at a time.

While touring Bran Castle, you’ll walk through different rooms with original furniture and learn about the history and owners of the castle. You’ll also enjoy stunning views of the surrounding valley and even climb a narrow stairway, once a secret passage.

The Time Tunnel includes an elevator ride (the Stone elevator) that takes you to an underground passage lined with screens you can interact with. I wouldn’t say this is a must-see in the castle, but it’s a nice activity if you want to spend more time inside the castle.

Lastly, you can check out the various shops around the castle and buy your favorite souvenirs. Each shop sells specific items. For instance, the Regina shop is the go-to place for books, chocolates, and posters, while the Rotonda shop sells t-shirts, magnets, mugs, and more. There are five shops in total.

Note that after you take the elevator ride, you’ll exit the castle, so be sure to tour everything before and leave the elevator at the end. You will still be able to explore the castle gardens and check out the view from below.

Just outside the castle, there’s a small market with stands selling souvenirs, food, and drinks. You can have lunch or a snack here before or after the visit. However, if you want to try some authentic Romanian street food, I recommend La Trăsura cu Bucate , just outside the castle grounds.

Bran Castle Tour from Bucharest

Halloween is a special time to visit Bran Castle as there is always some event going on. If you’re traveling there in late October 2023, check out their Halloween Special Tour and Party. The special activities take place on October 28, when the castle will be decorated with a Halloween theme and feature special projections and props.

Check out all the details regarding the Halloween event on the Bran Castle website, and be sure to book your tickets in advance so you don’t miss out on this cool event.

Halloween at Bran Dracula’s Castle 2023 (recommended for adults only)

You can get your Bran Castle tickets online or on-site. When you buy them online, they are valid until the end of the year, so you can also change the date you visit. However, buying the tickets on-site is also easy as they have automatic machines, and it just takes 2 minutes. The last time I went there was in July 2023, and there was a short line that moved very fast.

The ticket price is the same whether you buy online or on-site, which is 60 RON (roughly 13$ or 12€). The other activities have separate tickets that you can buy from on-site machines. The elevator ride is 25 RON (around 5.3$ or 5€) while the torture machines exhibition is 10 RON (roughly 2$/€).

Note that most tours don’t include the tickets, so you need to factor these in addition to the cost of the tour. However, as I mentioned, getting tickets on-site is super easy and quick.

Bucharest to Bran Castle Tour, Transylvania

While you’re in Transylvania, I recommend also checking out Cantacuzino Castle. For the fans of the Netflix show Wednesday, this is one of the filming locations, and it’s a gorgeous place in Valea Prahovei with stunning mountain views. You can easily get there from Brasov. Check out this guide on visiting Cantacuzino Castle .

As I mentioned above, visiting Brasov is an absolute must. I have told many friends who traveled to Bucharest that they should head to Brasov instead (or in addition), and they all agreed Brasov is so worth it. You can even find more affordable accommodation. I always check Booking.com for accommodation, and I consistently find great options. Check them out below.

Also, in case you weren’t aware, since June 2023, Brasov has its very own international airport. You can now fly directly to Transylvania and visit all the wonderful places this region offers. Check out the best flights on Skyscanner .

Travel tip: Get travel insurance

Whether you travel to Romania or anywhere else, you should always be prepared for unexpected situations. Traveling also comes with risks, and it’s important to think about safety before venturing anywhere.

Romania is a safe country to travel to, but unexpected issues can happen. I always do my best to check local newspapers and ask for local advice to avoid dangerous situations. I also have travel medical insurance, so if something happens to me while abroad, I know I’ll have assistance.

If you travel a lot, I recommend Nomad Insurance by SafetyWing since it’s so flexible. It works in 185 countries, and your policy extends automatically every month, so you don’t end up without coverage. Plus, you can stop your coverage at any time. You can find out more about the insurance coverage and sign up here .

Bran Castle has 57 rooms in total, some of which are well-restored for tourist visits. King Ferdinand’s rooms are quite well-restored and contain ornate furniture along with providing a beautiful view of the villages below. You can also explore the residence of Queen Marie and take a look at some of her belongings that depict her deep love for the castle.

There is a small torture museum located on the second floor of the castle. It is placed in a private room, which further leads to smaller rooms and then into a private balcony. You can discover some of the ancient torture tools that were used within these walls, including a chair of torture, the rack, an iron maiden, and much more.

If you’re brave enough to face the creatures of the night, then the 4th floor of the castle dives deep into Romanian Mythology. Famous creatures of the night like the werewolf, the Grim Reaper, the Strigoi, the Iele, and many more come into the light to tell you stories of how they haunt the nights of nearby residents.

Bran Castle Highlights

Narrow Stairway

There is a narrow stairway in the castle that once used to be a secret. This passage allows just one person to fit at a time and connects the first floor to the third. An antique fireplace acted as the secret entrance to the stairway.

Bran Castle has a lovely round tower that showcases its architecture with its stone and wooden walls. Made in Gothic architecture, the Donjon is one of the biggest highlights of this castle. Unfortunately, the old tower that stood here was struck by lightning and the new, remarkably well-kept tower, dates from 1593.

Ancient Items

Bran Castle has a remarkable connection of various items within. Queen Marie collected sets of china, books, statues and icons. King Ferdinand’s room has a lovely collection of ornate furniture, a set of daggers and royal treasures. You can also find some Romanian pottery, paintings, hand-carved fixtures around the castle and other subtle details.

Time Tunnel

Constructed in a 59-meter-deep old well that was later converted into an elevator shaft, the Time Tunnel at Bran Castle is a horizontal gallery that features some of Romania’s scariest mythological creatures. It is also the longest-approved ride between two elevator stops (31.5 meters) in the area.

Old Water Well

There is an old water well at Bran Castle that isn’t a well anymore. You can, however, explore the top of this well, which just functions as a decorative feature now. When the fortress was built in the 1400s, a 60-foot-deep well was drilled through solid rock, and there also used to be a secret room right above the water level that once held the castle’s treasures.

Queen Marie’s Heart

After the beloved Queen Marie passed away, her heart was placed in a chapel close to the castle upon her request. She wanted to remain close to her home. You can visit this shrine close across the brook at the edge of the woodland.

Inside Bran Castle >

Bran Castle as Dracula’s Castle

Bran Castle is situated deep in the valleys of Transylvania on the edge of a cliff, and because of its location, this is the only castle that fits the description of the spooky castle that Count Dracula resided in Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula. Some people also believe that Vlad the Impaler, the notorious Wallachian Prince, was the inspiration for Count Dracula’s character.

However, Bram Stoker never validated any of these claims. In fact, Bram Stoker never even set foot into Bran Castle. The castle described in the novel was inspired by some illustrations of Bran Castle that Bram Stoker found during his research. Apart from this, there seems to be no other connection between Bran Castle and Dracula’s Castle.

After the castle gained much popularity among enthusiasts for this rumored connection, the government of Romania decided to market the castle as Dracula’s castle to improve tourism.

Soccer-Youthful Romania can build on Euro 2024 showing

By Nick Said

FRANKFURT, Germany (Reuters) - Romania reached the knockout rounds of the European Championship for the first time in 24 years with a young squad of players who ultimately met their match in the Netherlands in the round of 16 but have given the country hope for the future.

Under coach Edward Iordanescu, son of former Romania tactician Anghel, they were unbeaten through the qualifiers and showed their potential with a 3-0 victory over Ukraine in their opener in Germany.

They finished second in their pool after a 2-0 defeat by Belgium and 1-1 draw with Slovakia, but in the last-16 were exposed by a Netherlands side who had more experience and quality and won 3-0 to end Romania's stay in the competition.

Sixteen of the 26-player squad at the Euros were aged 26 or under and for them it was a first major championship after the country failed to qualify for the 2020 finals.

They will be better for this experience, and while the long-term future of coach Iordanescu has yet to be determined he has indicated he would like to stay on and help the team grow.

Former Romania international Gheorghe Hagi, whose son Ianis is a key member of the emerging group of young players and started on the left wing against the Dutch, sees a strong future for the side.

"Congratulations to the players, coaches, supporters, staff. They made Romania known again and from here a process of growth begins," he told reporters. "They should be proud. We need to have more confidence and more personality.

"Several players showed very good things (at the Euros). We have to want more. I am proud of the entire Romanian team."

Where they will hope to improve is in the forward areas.

Of the 16 teams who made the knockout stages, only Slovakia and Georgia initiated fewer attacks and had less shots than Romania’s 15 attempts on target in their four games.

"We have to take inspiration from this. The new generation, the children, have to take inspiration from these boys," Iordanescu said.

"This unity that we have, this cohesion between the Romanians and the national team, this could be a new beginning.

"I am sure that whatever happens with me and with my situation, this team has the power, the strength, to have a good future and we want to reach the (2026) World Cup. It is very important that we have two qualifications in a row."

Day 1: Tour to Peles Castle and Brasov

The tour to Peles Castle and Brasov starts in Bucharest where your local guide will pick you up from your hotel. Next, you’ll leave the busy capital behind and head north towards the Carpathian Mountains. In approximately two hours you’ll arrive in Sinaia, a popular mountain resort and home to the beautiful Peles Castle. Built in 1883, Peleș Castle, a masterpiece of German Renaissance architecture, was the royal residence of King Charles I of Romania. Here you will visit the castle and its gardens and find out more about the building itself and the Romanian Royal Family. The tour continues toward Brașov, a chic mountain city. In Brasov, you’ll take a walking tour of the city exploring both the old part of the city and the medieval walls and bastions that were beautifully preserved. Founded in 1211 by the Teutonic Knights on an ancient Dacian area and populated by Saxons, Brasov is one of the seven walled citadels (Siebenürgen) and has beautifully preserved medieval walls and structures. Here you will enjoy a walking tour of the city, have lunch and get to go up by cable car on Tampa, the nearby mountain. The view of the city from above is amazing.

Day 2: Visit Bran Castle and Prejmer Fortified Church

The second day starts by visiting Bran, a village famous for the castle that overlooks it from high on a rock cliff. Bran Castle, also known as the Dracula Castle, does not only have an impressive architecture but also is a place of great stories, myths, and legends. Although most famous for being the bloody counts lair, Bran Castle is also tied to the history of the Romanian Royal Family and to the Teutonic Knights.
