FARM/ART DTOUR

Where artists explore timeless connections between land and people

tour d'zrt

The DTour returns October 5-14, 2024

Join us for a free self-guided excursion through 50 miles of scenic farmland in rural Sauk County, Wisconsin, punctuated by site-responsive artworks, pasture performances, roadside poetry, local food markets and more. Inviting thousands to appreciate what farmers do everyday, the Farm/Art DTour invites you to come closer to the land that supports us all.

Thank you Artists!

Thank you to everyone who submitted an artwork proposal for the Farm/Art DTour! Applications will be reviewed in the coming months and up to 10 artists will be selected to realize their site-responsive artworks in farm fields along the 50-mile route.

Browse images from former DTours

Large cut out artwork Get to the Pie by Brent Houzenga. Located in a farm field, with a farm in the background, This installation was part of the 2020 Farm Art DTour.

The Farm/Art DTour has gone from regional novelty to a model for the emerging world of curbside culture. It took the restrictions of a pandemic to show what DTour visitors have known for many years now: the form has wheels. Already there have been drive-by shows staged on the East and West coasts. Having participated in one in LA, I can say that the difference is that of layers, of depth. Viewing art works outdoors is one thing; a DTour through the land and season is an altogether more poignant experience.”

Feed the Starter Culture

Inviting thousands to witness what farmers do every day, and imagine what they might do tomorrow, the DTour supports our region’s heritage, using the arts to spark curiosity about, and investment in, the future of farming and land stewardship. Your generosity supports this work and helps us keep our agri/cultural programs free for all.

Marquette Art Tour to show off Marquette’s art scene this weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The 4th annual Marquette Art Tour is coming to town this weekend.

Participants will explore the artistic side of Lake Superior’s shoreline by touring galleries and studios around Marquette. You can get a map with all the stops listed then visit as many or as few as you’d like. The event will take place instead of the city’s First Thursday series to make sure folks can access all the stops in one day.

Organizers say you’ll even have a chance to see artists at work this weekend.

“It’s a great way to explore your own backyard and get a chance to see behind the scenes of a lot of our creative community,” said Amelia Pruiett, City of Marquette Arts and Culture marketing and communications coordinator. “Not only will the galleries have their doors open, but studio spaces will be open, demonstrations will be happening, [there will be] guest artists, and more.”

The Marquette Art Tour will be this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and again on Oct. 19. You can download the tour map here or pick up a hard copy at Travel Marquette or the Marquette Arts and Culture office.

Whether you’re into contemplating abstract paintings, finding new ceramic decor for your home, or want to explore unfamiliar art forms like Risograph printing, these Art-A-Whirl artists are sure to have work on display that will satisfy your inner art critic when the event returns this weekend, May 17-19.

While you’re making the rounds through Northeast’s studios and perusing paintings, don’t forget to stop by the myriad concerts happening in the neighborhood to catch some tunes, including the ever-popular Liquid Zoo at Bauhaus Brew Lab or Whirlygig at Indeed Brewing Company.

While the largest open studio tour in the country boasts more than a thousand artists (that's a lot of art to consume!), we attempted to narrow down this list to some choice picks. Most importantly: Go buy art and support local artists.

Photographer Adam Nantz  takes striking stills of nature, architecture, and everyday vignettes—both digitally and on film. What began as documentation of his time abroad in China led to a professional practice photographing concerts and producing art prints.  A-Mill Artists Lofts

Painter Amanda Hamilton composes collages from nature motifs, and paints shadowy scenes with acrylic and raw pigments mixed with dust, salt, and sand. Hamilton received her MFA in painting from Claremont Graduate University in 2004, and in 2019 was the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant.  Casket Arts Building

Multimedia fiber artist Andy Jacobs uses found, foraged, and second-hand materials to create woven paintings. Some of her weavings appear to drip and tear, while others create intricate loops and circuits. Jacobs received her MFA from Maine College of Art and Design and also tattoos. Casket Arts Building

Interdisciplinary painter Annie Irene Hejny makes abstract paintings of natural features, like water, snow, and bark. Her artwork is also her activism—created to highlight connection with the environment and to advocate for the preservation and protection of our waterways. Casket Arts Building

Ceramist Ashley Brazil  molds clay with her hands to make ceramics with a super fun, hands-on vibe. Her wonky candlesticks, vases, and platters are totally delightful. Brazil earned her BFA in ceramics from the University of Minnesota in 2022. Casket Arts Building

Print and design studio Back of Beyond Press specializes in Risograph printing—a quirky printmaking process that yields vivid, textural, and super unique results on paper. The press produces its own zines and collages, and also offers on-demand Risograph printing services, hands-on workshops, as well as a mixtape and zine subscription club. Holland Arts Building

Potter Chanelle Gallagher makes carved vessels with bold patterns and motifs that reference her Ojibwe heritage. The 2024 Native American Artist-in-Resident at the Minnesota Historical Society, she infuses her contemporary practice with inspiration from her historical research.  Q.arma Building

Jewelry designer Chosen and Free Co. crafts colorful statement earrings from polymer clay. Her funky designs are a fresh take on familiar accessory trends. Jewelry making started as a hobby for Lina, the woman behind Chosen and Free Co., and grew into a full-time business from her female empowerment passion project. Studio Q

Photographer Elise Radspinner  captures dreamy portraits and moody city images and landscapes on film. She uses experimental techniques and layering tricks to create otherworldly, kinetic depictions of her subjects.  A-Mill Artists Lofts

Painter and illustrator Philipo Dyauli is a self-taught artist whose murals and design work can be seen all across the Twin Cities. He paints vivid, large-scale scenes of everyday life—think Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande” with a 2024 software update.  Northrup King Building

Furniture company Tiny Tables Design makes, well, tiny tables made not only to be handsome and functional, but space-saving, too—easily tucked anywhere you might be tight on space. These playful, micro modernist furnishings are the latest project of industrial designer Dan Cramer, a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art’s MFA design program.  Grain Belt Bottling House

Abstract painter Ute Bertog has regularly shown in Twin Cities galleries since 2005—when she earned her BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her shapely abstract paintings are the result of a process she relates to writing—of refining, editing, and responding to the paints and materials she works with. Northrup King Building

Pop artists shows Lexington students how to make art with cardboard

tour d'zrt

LEXINGTON — Michael Albert has been an artist in residence at Lexington's three elementary schools.

Albert is a pop artist. He makes collages out of images and words printed on cardboard. Cereal boxes are his specialty.

For two days, he made Western, Central and Eastern elementary schools his personal studios as he showed students what he does and helped them create their own art.

The Lexington PTO sponsored Albert's visit, which was coordinated by Mary Haas, art teacher at Eastern Elementary School.

Haas said she has been communicating with Albert for about a year and introduced her students to his work last year.

"He provides resources for teachers in a fun way that we can use in our classrooms," she said.

On Monday morning, the gym/cafeteria at Western Elementary served as the classroom as chattering students made their collages.

First-grader appreciates freedom that art provides

Asked if she likes art, first-grader Reagan Lautamen said, "You bet I do. You can create anything you want."

For her collage, Reagan used letters to spell out her name and found a rainbow to add to the piece. She appreciated the time with Albert.

"He's really cool," Reagan said. "I can't believe we met a real artist."

Josie Hall agreed. Reagan's classmate had never made a collage out of cardboard cut-outs.

"So it was new to me," Josie said. "It was very fun. At my house, I have an art room where I can paint."

Josie used pictures of Apple Jacks to cover much of her cardboard background. She also had a picture of Dino, the "Flintstones'" pet.

"I think they can relate to what they're doing because they see these things all the time," said Ashley Todd, art teacher at both Western and Central elementary schools.

Students and staff at the district's elementary schools have been collecting cardboard material to make sure everyone could participate.

When the session was over, students on loan from the junior high helped collect the scissors and about 100 bottles of Elmer's Glue.

Before heading to Central, Albert planned to have lunch with the junior high kids. He stopped for a quick interview with a reporter.

Lexington first stop for pop artist

Albert described Lexington as the first stop on a 2½-month tour. He made the drive to north central Ohio from his home just outside New York City.

"I'm starting with two weeks of schools, but then school's going to end, so I'm doing a summer reading tour of libraries," Albert said.

He next will head to Tennessee and Missouri. In all, Albert plans to do 85 programs in 12 states.

"This is a good way to kick off the tour," Albert said of Lexington.

The pop artist has been creating since his college days at New York University, where he earned a business degree in 1988. Albert was inspired by the great artwork he saw in New York City's museums.

He felt a kinship with a number of artists.

"Some of my favorite artists were self-taught," Albert said. "They started experimenting, and their art developed."

He noted he has not received any formal training. Albert's art evolved from doodles and pen and ink to serious wax oil drawings and to the cubist mosaic cereal box collages he has made famous.

While he studied business and dabbled in art, Albert also explored music and literature.

"One of the messages I try to tell the kids is no matter what you're learning in school, and no matter what your job ends up being, we all have different interests in different things that have nothing to do with our job or our studies," he said.

Albert realized he could experiment with art and see where it would take him. His first collage was comprised of stickers, labels, junk mail and old photographs.

His work is a form of recycling "rather than tossing them in the trash."

"I doubt if I'm saving the world, but it does make a statement," Albert said.

His first pop art piece involved cutting up a box of Frosted Flakes with the iconic Tony the Tiger, he of the famous slogan "They're g-r-r-r-eat!"

Albert's source materials have evolved to include anything on printed cardboard.

At each stop he makes, the pop artist puts together a piece for that particular place. He used an "L" from a box of Lucky Charms to start the word Lexington.

Albert also used bits from cardboard boxes that had contained Eggo waffles, Trix cereal, Crest toothpaste and Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. He always includes his initials.

The possibilities are endless.

"If I did a different form of art, it wouldn't really lend itself to coming to schools like this," Albert said.

Noting he is in his 50s, Albert takes art seriously.

"There's no right or wrong way to interpret it or do it," he said. "Art isn't like that. You do it for yourself and try to do things that are meaningful to you.

"It's the ultimate form of human expression."

Man Who Appeared on XXXTentacion's "Look at Me!" Cover Art at Age 12 Heading to Prison Over Stabbing

Zachary Stoddard, also known as KidPronto, was famously featured on the cover of the late rapper's breakthrough single with a blunt in his nose.

The boy who was featured on the cover art of XXXTentacion's breakthrough single "Look at Me!" will spend the next decade behind bars.

Per XXL magazine , Zachary Larry Stoddard, a.k.a. KidPronto , was sentenced to 10 years in prison on attempted murder charges for the 2019 stabbing of Keith Tatton. As confirmed by the Broward State Attorney's Office, he received his sentence from Judge John J. Murphy III on Friday, May 10 after pleading no contest to attempted second-degree murder and battery.

In an interview with Eric Skelton for Complex in December 2020, Stoddard opened up about what it was like to be featured on the cover of XXXTentacion's 2015 single when he was only 12 years old with a blunt in his nose.

"I was smoking, and I just put it in my nose, took a picture, and sent it to the group chat as a joke," said Stoddard, who was tried as an adult despite being 16 at the time of the stabbing he's been convicted for. "We were just playing, and X was like, ‘I’m going to use this as my next song cover.’ He wasn’t big or anything back then, so I didn’t really think nothing of it." Stoddard, who started a rap career of his own following XXXTentacion's murder in 2018, is now 21.

As reported by Local 10 in 2019, Stoddard got into an argument with Tatton during an incident in 2019 which ended when he stabbed Tatton multiple times. Tatton suffered a severed femoral artery and lost a lot of blood. He was placed on life support but survived his injuries after several heart surgeries. Stoddard confessed shortly after the stabbing.

8 best things to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend

Music, festivals, farm tours and more.

tour d'zrt

Looking for something fun to do with kids in the D.C. area this weekend? Here are our top picks.

Greek Festival at St. Sophia’s Cathedral

For fans of roast lamb and homemade spanakopita and loukoumades, it doesn’t get much better than this annual festival at St. Sophia’s Cathedral near Woodley Park, which features three days of food, music and dancing. Greek bands perform at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, while folk dancers, DJs and children’s groups are featured throughout the weekend. There are long lines for gyros and souvlaki cooked over coals (smell them and you’ll understand why), while the “Taverna” serves Greek beer and wine. A bazaar features Byzantine icons, jewelry, CDs and Greek soccer scarves, while a moon bounce and games keep the kids busy. If you’ve never visited St. Sophia’s before, tours are offered on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Friday from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Free.

Music in the Meadow at the National Arboretum

Bring a picnic to enjoy while watching the concert in the Arboretum’s Ellipse Meadow, featuring local neo-cumbian band Cumbia Heights. This event, supported by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, is pay-what-you-can. Note that ticketing is only for concert access; the grounds won’t be open during the show. Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. $25 recommended ticket price.

Fiesta Asia

The annual Fiesta Asia shuts down Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and Sixth streets NW to showcase more than 20 Asian cultures in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Look for live music and dance performances representing multiple countries, a karaoke stage, a cosplay contest, martial arts demonstrations, hands-on games and crafts for kids, a large vendor area, and a “food alley” featuring local and New York City restaurants that is apparently 50 percent larger than last year’s. Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free .

Loudoun Farm Tour

The Loudoun Farm Tour is a way to immerse city slickers — kids and adults alike — in the rural communities on the other side of Dulles Airport. The 38 farms open their doors for more than just talks about farm management or letting kids come face to face with barnyard friends such as pigs, donkeys and llamas. Over two days, taste raw honey straight from an apiary or try a scoop of all-natural ice cream on a dairy farm. Learn how craft beer goes from the field to the bottle or tour farms dedicated to mushrooms, garlic or tea leaves. This year, the tour includes shuttle buses running on loops between farms, leaving from four locations, including the Ashburn Metro station. Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free; farms may charge for tours and activities .

Africa on the Avenue at Bruce Monroe Park

Washington’s African heritage and community are celebrated during Africa on the Avenue, held in Park View’s Bruce Monroe Park on Saturday. There’s music from a variety of DJs and artists, including the Ethiopian fusion of the Feedel Band, the Grammy-nominated songs of Malian griot Cheick Hamala Diabate, and the Farafina Kan drummers and dancers. For families, there’s a foam party, double Dutch, hula hoops and interactive art projects. Vendors will be selling African coffee, head wraps, braiding, clothing, books and pepper sauces. Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Free .

Bladensburg Waterfront Art Festival

Painting and pontoon boats meet at Bladensburg Waterfront Park’s outdoor arts party, which features a market of local artists, hands-on community art projects, demonstrations and activities for kids. Adults can sip beer or wine, and all ages can enjoy live music and free boat tours on the Anacostia River. Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Free .

Lincoln Strawberry Festival

Supermarket strawberries have nothing on a freshly picked red berry, which you’ll find in abundance at the inaugural Lincoln Strawberry Festival in Loudoun County. This two-day fundraiser from Wegmeyer Farms begins Saturday morning with a strawberry pancake smorgasbord (buy a separate breakfast ticket in advance) and continues with musical performances, a strawberry baby fashion show, tractor rides, and eating competitions for strawberry pie and strawberry ice cream. Sunday’s schedule is similar, swapping in 4-H animal presentations in the morning instead of pancakes. Each day, you’ll be able to pick your own strawberries for purchase while supplies last. Proceeds benefit a variety of local causes. Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. $15; free for kids age 2 and under .

The Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf

The Wharf’s quirky combination of the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo is back for the 12th year on Sunday, after rain on May 4 postponed the original event. The annual Running of the Chihuahuas involves more than 100 of these tiny dogs sprinting in groups of eight on a 60-foot “racetrack.” One Chihuahua eventually emerges as the fastest of the pack, winning $100 cash and swag during this bracket-style tournament. Only Chihuahuas can race, but dogs of all types can enter an all-breed dog costume contest, while human spectators enjoy the Pacifico Beer Garden, a DJ, a pet photo booth and an adoptable-dog parade. This event is very popular: Arrive early for the best views of the track, or watch on a giant video projection screen. Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Free admission. All spots for racing Chihuahuas are filled.
