Colnago just unveiled a first-ever; its limited-edition V3Rs TdF is the first official bicycle in the Tour de France history (in collaboration with Amaury Sport Organization).

Colnago_V3Rs_TDF_seatpost

The limited (and we mean limited) run of bikes pays homage to Tour de France from 1903 to today — 108 years. That’s precisely how many bikes will be made available for purchase for the mere price of $16,399 (£11,090, €13,200), but…can you put a price on history?

Colnago TDF V3R in the wheels

The bike itself was already stunning; the Colnago V3Rs now boasts black matte paint with iconic yellow leader jersey accents on the frame and the right brake lever. Tour de France logos emblazoned on the top tube, fork, and seat tube complement the overall aesthetic of the build.

Colnago_V3Rs TDF_front_dx

For those unfamiliar, the V3Rs is Colnago’s all-around race bike — aerodynamic yet lightweight. The frameset weighs in at a scant 790g (size 50) in the company’s raw disc version.

“We are very happy to have found a licensee in Colnago which is part of the history of the Tour de France,” said Laurent Lachaux, ASO Head of Commercial, in a press release easily today. “As Colnago bikes are universally recognized as amongst the most technical and well-designed in the world, we could not have opted for a better choice.”

Colnago TDF V3R climbing

It’s not just the frameset that gets the TdF treatment. The same goes for the limited edition gear adorning the V3Rs TdF. The Selle Italia SLR Boost saddle and Continental GP 500 tires get a splash of Maillot Jaune yellow.

Colnago_V3Rs_TDF_Front

“Colnago has in its DNA the ability to always arrive first in the market, and once again, it has happened thanks to the choice of the Tour de France,” said Manolo Bertocchi, Head of Marketing Colnago. “A beautiful, unique, and limited edition bicycle. A real Colnago.”

Colnago_V3Rs TDF_disc

The groupset for this build could be no other than Campagnolo Super Record ESP with a limited edition yellow right brake lever. The Super Record ESP isn’t the only Campagnolo gear on the V3-Rs. The new Bora Ultra WTO DB wheels, with a beautiful C-LUX finish, keep this rolling art fast — check out our review here.

Rounding out the stealth yet traditional look of the V3Rs are Deda Elementi Alanera DCR bars with smart internal cable routing. The one-piece bar/stem expertly hides the brake hose and wires, which pass inside the stem and the pivot of the fork, giving the bicycle a flawless look — Vive le tour!

Genius, pure gennius. I salute anyone that can get people to pay $16k for a made inChina carbon frame they produce fore less than $500. Great job!

serval

Make in Taiwan by Giant..

rob

actually, there’s a strong possibility the frame itself is made in china or even vietnam… the “made in” sticker is somewhat based off percentage content, but also where the final assembly was done. for example, with full suspension frames, most companies will actually make all the parts of the frame in china, all the way thru paint/finish…. and then ship those parts to taiwan to their taiwan location (usually the same company) where they then assemble all the parts…. that’s how they slap a made in taiwan sticker on there. for road bikes it’s a little trickier, but its not too difficult getting enough made in TW components to get that final made in taiwan sticker…. Taiwan actually does very little, when it comes to actually manufacturing carbon components.

Tony Pepperoni

Pfft, that’s nothing. My truck costs more than that and It’s got a hemi, nbd

Seraph

Dude, sign me up for two of them! One to hang on the wall and one to ride. What a great deal.

Tom

why bother? you can get the unique digital render for only $7K…think of all the savings!

blahnblahblah

colnagos use to be like ferraris now their more like really expensive mazdas

I really did LOL… thanks…

bmx

but…can you put a price on history? Well they just did – sorry they commodified, repackaged and marketed it to a specific demographic

None Given

At the end of the day, who cares? Heck, most couples own a biggest rip off known to man…diamonds. The value of something is subjective. Would I pay $16k for a bike? Well, darn near…is it worth it to me? Certainly. Will I pay $5 for a Starbucks coffee? Um, what, you think I am mad at my money and want to waste it?

If you spent anywhere near $16k for a bike than know that you are stupid.

tour de france colnago

Press Release

Colnago is pleased to announce the first official bicycle in the history of the Tour de France in collaboration with ASO (Amaury Sport Organization), the race organizing company. There are only 108 units – just like the number of editions of the Tour de France from 1903 until today.

tour de france colnago

The livery is unique, black and yellow like the color of the jersey that distinguishes the leader of the Tour’s General Classification and is presented to the winner on the podium in Paris. The head tube will feature the Colnago logo with the iris, the historic beating heart of Cambiago’s bikes. The Colnago logo will feature on both the top tube and the fork, while a unique and dedicated design representing the outline of France will be on the rear of the bicycle. Another unique detail is the right lever, in yellow, with the same color featuring on the top tube along with the Tour de France logo, also reproduced on the forks.

“We are very happy to have found a licensee in Colnago which is part of the history of the Tour de France,”  said Laurent Lachaux, ASO Head of Commercial.  “As Colnago bikes are universally recognized as amongst the most technical and well-designed in the world, we could not have opted for a better choice.”

The frame is Colnago V3Rs, ultralight and aerodynamic, excellent on any type of terrain: flat, uphill and mixed routes. The frame weighs just 790 grams in size 50s in raw disc version (with the metal parts placed and glued). The total integration of the cables, which pass inside the stem and the pivot of the fork, gives the entire bicycle an aesthetically flawless look.

V3Rs COMPONENTS

The assembly is of the same level, starting with the official licensees of the Tour de France: Selle Italia with the SLR Boost Carbon Superflow kit and the Continental Grand Prix 5000 tires. The groupset is Campagnolo Super Record EPS Disc 12-speed, perfectly complementing the Bora Ultra WTO DB wheels with C-LUX finish. The handlebar is Deda Elementi ALANERA DCR (with Deda internal cable routing) monocoque in carbon fiber.  The suggested retail price is 13,200€ (16,399 US$, 11,090 GB£, 20,340 AU$, 57,820 AED).

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Colnago V4Rs Arrives: Tested by Tour de France Champ Tadej Pogačar

colnago v4rs

If Pogačar takes back the yellow jersey at the 2023 Tour de France, he will likely do it on Colnago’s revised, pro-spec roadie.

Updated testing methodology, a comprehensive approach to weight reduction, and race-vetted carbon layup structures — Colnago poured them all into its newest thoroughbred, the V4Rs.

UAE Team Emirates contributed to testing, which took place both on the road and in the lab. The main testing objective was to land on the proper stiffness, and the company’s approach resulted in geometry and sizing tweaks.

colnago v4rs

Colnago said in a press release the testing accounted for “both stress factors (static and dynamic conditions)” and helped create a “perfectly balanced frame” in terms of stiffness and rideability in variable race conditions. New seat stays are significantly more resistant to bending and impacts. They’re also more aerodynamic — for speed gains.

UAE Team Emirates riders also helped test multiple approaches to carbon layup in the frame throughout last season. The carbon test project occurred under the name “Colnago Prototipo.” In it, the company scrutinized various carbon layering methods to land on the carbon the team would eventually ride in the 2022 Tour.

Colnago said that elsewhere in the design process, it struggled to cut weight from the previous V3rs.

colnago v4rs

“It hasn’t been easy to improve this aspect in comparison with its predecessor, the V3Rs; that’s why Colnago worked on the weight of the overall module (frame, fork, headset and handlebar) instead of on the values of each single component,” the brand said.

The changes saved 47 g, swapping out the old Sr9 stem and Colnago Hbr41 handlebar and headset. Now on board, there’s a Colnago CC.01 handlebar and a CeramicSpeed headset with “Solid Lubrication Technology” or SLT. Along with the weight savings, Colnago said the headset should protect the bearings better from water and grit ingress, thanks to its ceramic and stainless steel construction.

Geometric changes for the V4Rs include making the “relationship between seat tube length and reach almost linear.” That, Colnago said, should mean easier and more precise size selection, plus more comprehensive adjustability to the saddle position. The brand also “harmonized” the stack/reach ratio across all sizes and cut the length of the chainstays.

According to Colnago’s press release, the V4Rs proved worthy to Pogačar.

He called the bike “[r]eally responsive. For me, that’s good on the climbs to attack because when you push the pedal, the bike goes really, really well. This helps to attack faster.”

colnago v4rs pogacar

And, he said, in the Tour de France, “You need the comfort in the bike because we have such long stages. It’s not only about speed and lightness; it’s also about comfort. It’s really important that after six hours on the bike, you don’t feel completely destroyed, so … our bike is just perfect for that.”

MSRP, spec’ed with a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset, ENVE 3.4 wheels, and Continental GP5000’s: €15,260 — or just over $16,000 as of this writing. It’s on Colnago’s website .

Colnago’s Prototipo becomes the V4Rs – Tadej Pogačar’s next Tour de France-winning bike?

Colnago has aimed to improve the V3Rs on all fronts

Warren Rossiter

Colnago has launched the V4Rs, the final rendition of the Colnago Prototipo ridden by Tadej Pogačar through the 2022 season and, unsurprisingly, an evolution of the V3Rs.

The Colnago V3Rs, launched in 2019 , is a proven race-winner, being the bike of choice for the UAE Team Emirates of Pogačar, who won the 2021 Tour de France aboard the bike.

Colnago says it set out to improve the V3Rs on all fronts, with a goal to refine aerodynamics, stiffness, weight, comfort and strength.

Colnago claims the V4Rs will save up to 27.7 watts from improved aerodynamics, while the frame is also – wait for it – 57g lighter.

The Italian brand says the frame is also stiffer both when sprinting and while seated thanks to the new Real Dynamic Stiffness (RDS) design.

Finally, before we get into the detail, the sizing geometry has evolved to offer a better fit for racing-focused riders, according to Colnago.

What you need to know about the new Colnago V4Rs

  • Developed from the Colnago Prototipo
  • 27.7 watts more efficient than the Tour-winning V3Rs
  • 57g lighter than the V3Rs
  • Improved ride quality and handling
  • Revised geometry for a better fit across the sizes
  • CeramicSpeed SLT headset

Frame development

tour de france colnago

Colnago says the V4Rs has been in development since October 2020, starting with feedback from UAE Team Emirates. By April 2021, Colnago says prototypes were being produced.

Colnago tells us the design of the V4Rs draws inspiration from the C68 that launched in April , with areas of co-development between the two, most notably on elements such as the finishing and painting processes to reduce weight.

tour de france colnago

The C68’s modular construction was also used in the V4Rs's development, because it allowed for faster prototyping and evaluation in the wind tunnel.

By October of 2021, Colnago had produced a small number of frames and submitted the design for approval by the UCI under the name Prototipo . That was the unbranded bike Pogačar started racing in the early part of the WorldTour season and, subsequently, at the Tour de France.

There, Pogačar was bidding for a third consecutive Tour de France title, but the Slovenian finished second behind Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard. However, since the Prototipo debuted, Colnago says it's been ridden to 23 victories under 10 different riders.

Frame details

tour de france colnago

The V4Rs has been designed as a fully integrated system and features the CC.01 integrated bar that debuted on the C68 (you can read our Colnago C68 review ).

In fact, Colnago says the CC.01 bar was designed for the V4Rs and then made available for the earlier release of the C68, rather than the other way around.

tour de france colnago

Compared to the V3Rs cockpit, Colnago claims a 16 per cent drag reduction with the CC.01 integrated bar and stem. Colnago also claims aero-improvement has no detrimental effect on the stiffness of the bar, compared to a traditional round bar.

The bar also comes with a new 3D-printed out-front mount (coming soon) for the Wahoo Bolt V2 bike computer , that apparently saves 0.75 watts at 50kph. Every little helps, we suppose.

tour de france colnago

Elsewhere, in terms of aerodynamics, Colnago has paid attention to the frame’s frontal area, with a new head tube design.

The oversized top bearing allows for fully internal cable routing and smoothes out the profile to a more hourglass-style shape over the V3Rs’s fatter profile, Colnago says.

tour de france colnago

It also means the V4Rs can run a standard round steerer as opposed to the V3Rs’s D-shaped steerer. Colnago claim this improves the front-end stiffness and stability.

A new, lighter fork integrates into the front end and allows tyre clearances up to 32mm, as is common on many of the latest race bikes.

Aero testing

tour de france colnago

Colnago put the new V4Rs through aero testing with two different wheel setups and tested it against the rim brake version of the Colnago V3Rs .

The V4Rs also had the out-front mount in place and two bottle cages (with one bottle, because Colnago says this is the normal setup in the closing stages of a race) and a pedaling rider.

With the shallower rim depth, the V4Rs saved three per cent (or 13.2 watts) over the V3Rs and six per cent (27.7 watts) with a deeper aero wheelset.

The V3Rs was already a lightweight bike, with an unpainted frame (size 50s) weighing in at 795g, with a 390g fork.

As a result, Colnago says it didn’t aim predominantly at weight reduction, but to rebalance the weight. The equivalent-sized V4Rs (size 485) frame weighs 3g heavier at 798g.

Savings have, however, been made with the fork (now a claimed 375g compared to 390g) and in the frame kit parts (CC0.1 bar and CeramicSpeed SLT headset), coming in at 1,173g compared to the V3’s 1,185g. A complete frame kit weighs in at 1,668g (frame, fork, bar/stem, headset).

tour de france colnago

Colnago says weight and stiffness together have a major effect on a bike's handling, but that it isn’t always about just seeking higher stiffness figures in the key areas of a frame (head tube and bottom bracket).

For the V4Rs, Colnago has actually reduced the heat tube stiffness by between five and ten per cent (dependent on size) and maintained the bottom bracket stiffness from the V3Rs. Colnago says these changes have led to a bike that's more solid and stable in its handling than the V3Rs.

“For sure, it's more stiff and more responsive,” says Pogačar ( he is, in effect, a Colnago employee – ed ). “When you stand up you feel a better response, better reacting. For sure this helps in the peloton in the fast races and when attacking and sprinting. This was for me the biggest change.”

Refined geometry

tour de france colnago

Based on feedback from Colnago’s professional riders, the geometry (especially reach and stack ) has been revised to have a more balanced feel and performance across the sizes, compared to the V3Rs.

For the V4Rs, the relationship between seat tube length and reach is almost linear, which Colnago say makes for easier and more precise size selection.

Colnago has also kept the stack/reach ratio constant across the sizes and kept the chainstay length constant, too. This, Colnago claims, is to keep the racy feel and handling consistent from the smallest to the largest sizes.

Race proofing

tour de france colnago

The V4Rs also incorporates a newly shaped seatstay design that is said to be less exposed in the event of a crash. This comes alongside a new carbon structure claimed to be more resilient to impacts, and more flexible.

Up front, Colnago has chosen to run with CeramicSpeed’s SLT headset. This design uses tough, corrosion-proof stainless steel parts and a solid polymer in place of traditional bearings.

As a result, the design is lubrication-free and eliminates both of the usual headset killers: grease contamination through dirt ingress and corrosion because of water ingress.

Colnago V4Rs specs and pricing

Colnago V4RS

Global pricing information hasn’t yet been made available. Euro pricing is as follows.

Colnago V4Rs Team Edition

  • Price: €15,260
  • Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 + power meter
  • ENVE 3.4 wheelset
  • CC0.1 Colnago cockpit

Campagnolo Super Record EPS and SRAM Red eTap AXS builds will follow.

Colnago V4Rs frame kit

  • Price: €5,250
  • Frame, fork, seatpost, headset, handlebar/stem

At €15,260 for a complete bike, the V4Rs is eye-wateringly expensive – even by the standards of today’s sky-rocketing prices, it’s one of the most expensive bikes we’ve featured on BikeRadar.

However, the frame kit pricing falls in line with other WorldTour-proven rivals. BMC’s SLR.01 comes in at €5,299, the Pinarello Dogma F is €5,600 and the Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 is €5,200.

Have you ever thought road bikes were just too cheap?

Well you may be in luck, as Colnago have upped the stakes by releasing a $30,000 replica of Tadej Pogačar’s Tour de France winning V3RS R machine.

Italian bike-builder Colnago has released a very limited edition “work of art” bike , worth around £23,000, to celebrate the company’s first ever Tour de France victory, as 21-year-old Pogačar took a historic win.

Colnago has built a total of 232 UAE Team Emirates livery bikes - 116 in the yellow and 116 in the standard team white, to mark the 116 years since a rider younger than Pogačar won the Tour.

Colnago said on its website: “We have the soul of champions. We carry the glory of hundreds of victories. Today we are honoured to share this one with you.

“To celebrate Tadej Pogačar’s success in this year’s race, we are building two very special versions of the V3RS to commemorate his iconic achievements.

“Ernesto Colnago was also victorious in the Tour de France this year. Finally, his palmarès is complete.

“The Tour de France is the only dream that has eluded one of the most influential iconic in cycling and now that dream has been fulfilled.”

This limited edition model comes with the Campagnolo Super Record EPS groupset, direct mount rim brakes and Campagnolo Bora WTO 33 wheels, all used by the UAE Team Emirates squad.

Each bike is numbered and signed by Colnago on a pure gold plaque, and will come with a “luxurious case” containing a commemorative jersey, a cycling cap, and signed letters from Colnago and Pogačar.

The yellow colourway comes in at $30,000 with the white comes in at a bargain $20,000.

Colnago’s V3RS, released last year, normally retails at £3,599 for the frameset.

This bike isn’t the only luxury commemorative item on sale in the cycling world.

Earlier this year, Peter Sagan began promoting £16,000 World Championship commemorative gold medals.

Which Tour de France superbike is the best? Pinarello vs Specialized vs Colnago vs Cervelo

First Published Jun 30, 2023

The Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7, Cervelo S5, Colnago V4RS and Pinarello Dogma F are some of the most successful road bikes of the 21st century, the top cyclists who ride them are likely to add to this winning tally during this year's Tour de France. UCI rules mean that these ostentatious machines are also available to mere mortals like you and me... so, which is best? Let's find out!

2023 Dogma F vs Sl7 vs V4rs superbikes

Value for money and the Tour de France aren’t exactly two things that go together, and today's test is no exception. That's because we’ve got our hands on some of the most expensive bikes that you can possibly buy.

If you’re in the market for the ultimate road bike, or just like looking at what the pros are riding, then here's how they compare and which we’d spend our money on.

2022 S-Works Tarmac jamie's bike

You might have already seen from our previous videos that my personal pride and joy is an S-Works Tarmac SL7, the one shown above in fact! However, over the past few weeks, I’ve had the chance to ride some of its World Tour competitors. Let's find out if it’s made me regret my purchase…

The Contenders

Pinarello dogma f.

2023 Pinarello Dogma F Super Record EPS.jpg

Let’s start with the Pinarello Dogma F. After all, this is the bike that the Ineos Grenadiers have made famous - and although a Tour de France GC victory looks unlikely this year, Pinarello remains the brand with the most Tour de France wins by quite a margin.

The Dogma was also one of the first bikes to truly embrace the aero AND lightweight philosophy, combining aerodynamic tube shapes without going so mad that the bike weighs too much to smash it up a mountain.

2023 Pinarello Dogma F Super Record EPS - fork.jpg

> Review: Pinarello Dogma F Super Record EPS 2023

Some people like to call this particular version the F14, but officially Pinarello ditched the numbering system when this bike was released in 2021, replacing the F12. There are plenty of nods back to Pinarello bikes of old: for example, the fork still has the 'Onda' curve which is said to reduce longitudinal and lateral shocks.

This latest generation also has fully integrated cables, is 9% lighter and is 4.8% less draggy than the F12 that won all those races according to Pinarello.

Our particular build is a very Italian affair, with Campagnolo Super Record EPS and these very swish Campagnolo Hyperon wheels. Like nearly all the Dogma F bikes out there, the finishing kit comes from the in-house componentry brand MOST.

Colnago V4Rs

2023 Colnago V4Rs.jpg

Next up we have a bike which has a far greater chance of winning the Tour, the Colnago V4Rs. This will of course be piloted by the likes of Tadej Pogacar and Adam Yates. Like Ineos, UAE Team Emirates will have just one bike at their disposal for the 2023 Tour, which will be used by both sprinters and mountain goats alike.

The V4Rs isn’t exactly a brand new bike despite only being released last year. Pogacar was seen for what seemed like ages on the 'Prototipo', before we discovered that it would indeed be called the V4Rs.

COLNAGO-prototipo-1

> Review: Colnago V4Rs

Our particular build is a bit of a mashup between the UAE 2022 and 2023 setups, with a team colourway, a 12-speed Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 9200 groupset as well as Dura-Ace C50 wheels and a Deda cockpit.

2023 Wout Van Aert Green cervelo S5

If we’re talking about winning bike races, then this is one bike that kind of has to make the cut. The Cervelo S5 is the Canadian brand's out-and-out aero race bike. At last year’s Tour it was the most victorious bike in the peloton, picking up three stage wins and plenty more podium finishes.

There’s plenty to look at on this bike, not just because of the garish green paint job commemorating Wout Van Aert’s green jersey at last year's Tour. With the radical head tube and wing-style stem, Cervelo designers have really ripped up convention in the name of cheating the wind.

Wout Van Aert's Tdf 2022 Cervelo S5 - head tube.jpg

Believe it or not, the bike we got our hands on is Wout van Aert's actual bike that he rode on to the Champs Elysse last year, so predictably I wasn't allowed to ride it, not even around the block! Happily, however, the local bike shop had one that I was able to ride in a very similar build with Shimano Di2 and Dura-Ace wheels.

2023 Dauphine Jumbo Visma Cervelo Vingegaard - 1

> Is Vingegaard going 1x for the Tour de France?

At this year's Tour, there are a few major differences between the Jumbo–Visma bikes when compared to Van Aert's green machine, as the team has switched to SRAM groupsets in a lucrative offer that Shimano reportedly couldn’t match.

The wheels have also been switched out, with this year's bikes fitted with Reserve wheels, a sister company to Cervelo. My word the bike industry is incestuous!

Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7

2023 Jamie's Sworks tarmac sl7 full bike

Take a look around any pro peloton, Surrey club run or in the pages of a high-end bike magazine, and you’ll be hard-pressed to miss the Tarmac SL7. This bike has almost become too popular for its own good! The SL7 has a truly enviable reputation as THE lightweight 'and' aero bike to beat.

A year ago when looking for my own ultimate bike, the SL7 was my frameset of choice. It's a bike that showcases the potential and engineering prowess of the big S, rather than previous efforts such as the Venge ViAs. I also owned a rim brake Venge ViAs, and it was most definitely a bike to forget in my opinion.

2023 Jamie's Sl7 Tarmac rear view

> 2023 cycling tech predictions — Specialized Tarmac SL8

With this SL7, the compromises in my mind are just right. The cables are semi-integrated and run under the stem, something that has now become far more popular than when the bike was released in 2021. The frame weight now rivals that of a pure climbing bike.

Unlike many brands, Specialized develops its top-end bikes in its own in-house wind tunnel (called the Win Tunnel of course), which means that simulation time is much less limited, and real-world performance is more likely when compared to bikes developed purely using CFD (Computational fluid dynamics).

2023 Specialized speed graph sl7 vs venge

> Custom Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL7 staff race bike: Which parts would you switch out?

Out of all the bikes here, you could argue that this one is the lowest spec with a now quite dated Shimano Ultegra 11-speed Di2 groupset and first-generation Roval Rapide wheels. If you want to check out the rest of my build, including Magura brake callipers and a shiny titanium top cap, then click the link above.

> The rising cost of cycling — when will this crisis stop!?

Let’s kick off our comparison with some prices shall we. Be warned they’re all pretty eye-watering!

It’s safe to say that if value for money is the aim of the game, then all four of these bikes are some way off even making the long list. The S-Works Tarmac SL7, despite now being £500 more than it was at launch in 2020, is actually the 'cheapest' frameset at £4,500. As with all the bikes here, you get a proprietary seatpost included.

The V4RS is next, costing £5,000 for the frameset. Unlike the SL7 you don’t get a stem included, so you’ll need to add that to your bill.

2023 Cervelo S5 Disc Stealth Black Frameset with bars

> Best road bikes 2023 — find your perfect drop bar bike whatever your budget

The S5 takes another jump up to £5,400, but does come with a set of bars and a stem. This means it likely works out similar to the V4RS if you’re building them up with equally premium components.

Finally, the most expensive of the four is the Dogma F which comes in at £5,500 with few additional extras, meaning your total build cost might be quite scary.

I thought I’d have a quick look and see what full bikes you can currently get for that kind of money, and the answer is most! You can buy bikes with carbon aero frames, electronic groupsets and carbon deep-section wheels for five grand or less, and that’s before even looking at the second-hand market. In fact, in our 2023 road bikes buyer's guide only two complete bikes will set you back more than these framesets. One thing is for sure, if you want the ultimate in the world of bikes then you need some very deep pockets!

> Best road bikes under £3,000

Geometry plays a pretty key role in the way a bike rides. As you can imagine, with all the bikes being designed for racing, they’re aggressive, low-slung machines.

2023 super bike geometry comparison

> How to read a bike geometry table: the numbers made easy

We’ve compared the bikes in a size 54cm (or medium) which is a 530 in the case of the V4Rs. The simple reason for this is that it's the size I ride, but the numbers are relative across the size range.

When it comes to reach, the Tarmac SL7 and the V4RS are the slightly longer bikes, but with only a 4mm difference between the longest and shortest - we’re not even talking about having to use a different stem length.

The stack of the bikes throws up some slightly larger differences. The SL7 and the S5 are the lower of the bikes, and it’s not surprising given the short headtube on the Cervelo.

That said, even the Colnago with the biggest stack and headtube is far from an endurance bike. So, if you’re not looking for that super aero position that can get uncomfortable, then an endurance -orientated bike might be the way to go. The extra comfort that they can provide can mean you will ride it quicker anyway.

The SL7, S5 and Dogma F all share a head angle in the region of 73 degrees, which is fairly typical of a modern race bike designed to combine fast steering with high-speed stability. The V4RS is the outlier here, with a slacker fork. This means, on paper, that the steering won't feel quite so quick in favour of descending stability.

2023 Pinarello Dogma F front headtube logo

> Should I buy a race bike or an endurance bike? The big differences, explained

The seat tube angles are all pretty similar and are designed to put you over the cranks for optimum power transfer - although you will notice that most pro riders switch to a 0-degree seatpost to put them even further forwards. This is most noticeable on the SL7 thanks to its seatpost shape.

So, out of all of them which feels the most aggressive? Well, the S5 certainly feels nimble with the shortest wheelbase and chainstays. The SL7 is pretty similar, followed by the Dogma F, and then the most relaxed of the four is the V4RS (but it’s far from an armchair).

If you’re tiny or very tall then the Pinarello might be your best bet, with 11 frame sizes ranging from 50cm to 62cm.

2023 Jamie weighing bikes dauphine adam yates v4rs

We’re being told more and more that weight isn’t the be-all and end-all, even on pretty hilly rides. If you’re shelling out this much on a bike though, we think it should at least be light enough to be able to impress anyone who picks it up at the cafe.

The SL7 and V4RS win in this regard, with frame weights of 800g and 798g respectively. The Dogma F is 865g unpainted, so not exactly a lot more, and it’s this bike that surprised me the most. With our setup it weighs 6.9kg, so just over the UCI weight limit. This i surprised me slightly given that it’s got discs and does look chunkier than the SL7 and V4RS.

Wout Van Aert's Tdf 2022 Cervelo S5 - stays and seat tube shape.jpg

As the out-and-out aero bike, it comes as little surprise that the S5 is the heaviest of the four, with a frame weight of 975g. The fork is also a bit heavier than its counterparts, and so most high-end builds end up weighing about 7.5kg.

For the vast majority of us, the minuscule differences in weights will have next to no effect on our performance, even on the hilliest of terrain. It’s probably best to ignore them unless you’re going full-weight weenie!

Tyre clearance

Wout Van Aert's Tdf 2022 Cervelo S5 - fork clearance.jpg

You’ve probably heard by now that tyres are getting wider. Most of the pros are on 28mm tyres, and riders like me now often like to train on 30mm tyres, with some even opting for 32mm. This means that tyre clearance is important for most of us when considering a new bike, but it’s unlikely to be a determining factor between these four.

Compared to previous generations, all four have boosted tyre clearance. The SL7 and V4RS offer a claimed capacity of 32mm, the S5 up to a whopping 34mm and the Dogma F still a perfectly respectable 28mm.

Realistically you can likely fit larger than those claimed sizes in each. Plenty of people have reported running 32mm tyres on the Pinarello with no rubbing, and so it’s highly unlikely that you’d ever need to max out any of these frames.

Looks/colours

2023 Cervelo S5 details - 4.jpeg

Call me vain, but looks matter! The SL7 frameset paint options get refreshed every year, and there are currently three options for 2023.

The V4RS is available in five colourways, including both the men's and women’s Team UAE and ADQ replicas. Personally I’d be most tempted by the white one...

With the S5 you’re certainly more limited with just two options. Cervelo has never been known for going loud with its paint - but to be fair, the two choices are pretty sweet in my opinion: a very stealthy black on black or sapphire/ice.

2023 Pinarello Dogma F MyWay customization

> Are these Trek’s wildest paint jobs ever?

The colour options are an area where the Pinarello is the clear winner for me. Not only are there seven colourways to choose from, but the Myway section of the website allows you to customise your colour scheme with up to 5000 different combinations. You’re therefore unlikely to see two the same in any one place which to some riders will be invaluable. There are different graphic layouts, 27 different colours to choose from as well as gloss or matt finishes. Let us know what you think of my creation!

All that customisation does cost a pretty penny - £650, in fact. But if you’re dropping five and a half grand on a frameset alone, then suddenly it doesn't seem so bad to have it look like no one else's.

Out on the road

I’m guessing that you all want to know how they behave out on the road. Well, as you can imagine, they’re all very nice bikes to ride.

I reckon the S5 feels the stiffest. It’s a thoroughbred race bike that feels like a dying breed with the fastest handling, a less compliant rear end and slightly more weight (that is arguably negligible). It's everything an aero bike should be, and if I was contesting a Tour de France sprint then this is the bike I’d choose.

On UK roads I don't think the weight will hold you back at all. Most climbs last under 10 minutes, and therefore power and stiffness play a larger role than weight, unlike on the continual steep gradients of European mountain passes that can go on for over an hour.

However, the SL7 is the bike I’d choose to ride an entire Tour de France on if I did have to do the full three weeks on just one bike. Despite what manufacturers would have you believe, every bike is a compromise. It’s impossible to have a bike that is aero, light and compliant, yet super stiff - but the S-Works for me manages to compromise the least and deliver in each of those areas. It’s no wonder, then, that it’s racked up quite so many wins on sprint and mountain stages alike.

2023 Colnago V4Rs top tube decal

> Specialized Allez Sprint vs Trek Emonda ALR

The V4RS is in essence a very similar bike to the Tarmac. It weighs pretty much the same, is supposed to be a do-it-all and it does indeed do it all well.

In our full review  we gave it an 8/10, so it’s a very capable bike. We did pick up on the inherent stiffness, making it a less comfortable bike than some of its other World Tour all-around competitors, namely the SL7. That can be forgiven if it’s an out-and-out racer like the S5, but the slacker front end feels like an odd choice if that’s what Colnago was going for.

The Pinarello is a bike I’m torn on. The looks don’t necessarily do it for me, but I respect the decision to stick to the brand's heritage. In the press release, Pinarello talk about "balance". Until I rode the bike I dismissed this as meaningless PR talk, however on the road, I do get it. Like any good race bike, speed feels easy to come by both on the flats and climbs. The handling is just as suited to a twisty town centre crit as it is hooning down a fast descent.

Performance-wise, I think that the Dogma F is every bit as good as the SL7, but certainly doesn't exceed it. It also costs around a thousand pounds more.

2023 Dogma F vs Sl7 vs V4rs logos

In a world where road race bikes are looking more and more alike, the Pinarello has somehow looks managed to look like nothing else on the market. That does make it feel special.

The Colnago just doesn’t quite do it for me. It feels more 'ordinary' than the other bikes, and that means that I’d be far more tempted to get Colnago's C68 if I specifically wanted a Colnago to make me smile, because it's a bit more unique.

For me, the SL7 is still the bike to beat when it comes to road race bikes. It's this that the V4RS seemingly tries to emulate, but despite being nearly three years old, the SL7 still comes out on top.

The Cervelo S5 was the pleasant surprise of the bunch. It's just so bloody fast!  Perhaps even the fastest bike I’ve ridden. But, would I choose it as a bike to ride every day of the week? No. It's a little too aggressive and not as compliant as the other bikes here.

2023 Dogma F vs Sl7 vs V4rs side by side superbikes

In fact, all four bikes are hard to recommend to mere mortals like me and you. They’re phenomenal race machines, but in all honesty, you can get 99% of the performance from bikes half this price!

It's likely these four bikes are going to be responsible for a scary amount of Tour de France stage wins in 2023 - but would one of them be your first pick if money was no object? Let us know in the comments section below...

Jamie has been riding bikes since a tender age but really caught the bug for racing and reviewing whilst  studying towards a master's in Mechanical engineering  at Swansea University. Having graduated, he decided he really quite liked working with bikes and is now a full-time addition to the road.cc team. When not writing about tech news or working on the Youtube channel, you can still find him racing local crits trying to cling on to his cat 2 licence...and missing every break going...

Interesting to look at the chart from Spesh. I've got the last iteration of the Sworks Venge and it's a 7.3kg build. On paper it's faster than the SL7 (although nothing is that fast with me on it). Wonder how it compares with the S5.

Yes, it's a real shame they got rid of it despite their graph showing it's slightly faster than the Tarmac. I've got one too (black, iridescent decals) and it's fast even with me on it. But my favourite thing is the noise that the Rovals make when pushing on.

That graph (Apple's marketing is guilty of doing this as well) has no scale bars, it also appears to be cropped off thereby exaggerating the differences between models. This is a big no no in science...

The Colnago of course.

Giro d'Italia 2024, Ernesto Colnago incorona Tadej Pogacar: "Darà spettacolo"

Il 92enne cambiaghese non ha dubbi: "Alla sua età solo Merckx aveva fatto simili imprese, gli auguro la doppietta Giro Tour"

Giro d'Italia 2024, Ernesto Colnago incorona Tadej Pogacar: "Darà spettacolo"

E i rivali?

LONDON (AP) — British cyclist Luke Rowe, who played a role in five Tour de France victories for three different leaders, will retire at the end of the season, his Ineos Grenadiers team said Friday.

The 34-year-old Rowe, a good classic rider, has been with the team which was previously known as Sky since 2012.

He took part in eight consecutive editions of the Tour, helping Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal to victory, often in the role of road captain.

Rowe had signed a new 2-year contract to remain with Ineos Grenadiers through to 2025 but decided to bring forward his retirement by a season after getting injured in a crash during the E3 Saxo Classic in March.

“I’ve had an amazing career and I have absolutely no regrets,” he said. “But the last 18 months have been testing in different ways and with this latest crash and resulting injury, it just feels like now is the right time to bow out, head home to Wales and spend a bit more time with my family.”

Rowe says he still hopes to race again this year, “with the Tour of Britain being my dream race to end on.”

Tour de france stage 20: an all-out climbing battle with one day to go, one last chance for the specialist climbers of the tour to gain time over rivals with better time trial abilities..

Stage 20 — Saturday, July 20 Nice to Col de la Couillole Distance: 132.8km (82.5 miles) Profile: Mountain stage

Stage 20: One last chance for the specialist climbers

Tour race organizers have put on another big climbing stage for the race’s last day in the mountains; the riders will slug it out over four ascents during the 133km from Nice to the summit of the Col de la Couillole.

On roads and climbs familiar to fans of Paris-Nice, the peloton will begin in the 10km Col de Braus soon after the start. They will race onwards to the Col du Turini (20.7km at 5.7 percent) and the Col de la Colmiane (7.5km at 7.1 percent), with the day’s final climb of the Couillole 15.7km in length and just over seven percent.

With only a time trial to follow, the climbing specialists will do what they can to gain time, knowing that the final yellow jersey — or indeed a place in the top-10 — could hinge on how well they fare on the Tour’s last day in the mountains.

Tour de France race organizer Christian Prudhomme: “The Paris-Nice regulars will be racing over familiar terrain, but that won’t make things any easier if the contest for the yellow jersey is still raging, particularly over such a short distance.

“Battle could commence as early as the climb to the Col de Braus. There will then be no respite on the climbs of the Cols de Turini, de la Colmiane and finally de la Couillole, the final ascent extending for 15.7km at an average gradient of 7.1 percent. We’ll all be holding our breath!”

Tour of Turkey: Van den Broek secures overall win as final stage is neutralised

Merhawi Kudus and Paul Double round out final podium as riders roll through 105.4km on wet roads in Istanbul

Frank van den Broek celebrated overall victory at the 2024 Tour of Turkey ahead of Merhawi Kudus and Paul Double

The Tour of Turkey drew to a close on Sunday with a fully neutralised final stage in Istanbul after race organisers announced a curtailment of the route.

The announcement came through early in the morning of the closing stage 8, with organisers stating "Due to the slippery condition of the roads, it's been decided that stage 8 will be neutralised.

"The peloton will ride the planned route but only one lap instead of 5 and will proceed to Sultanahmet with the distinctive jersey holders at the front of the peloton."

As a result, the peloton tackled a rainy ride on wet roads in Istanbul, rolling over the final fourth-category hill of the race and across the line without any contest.

The neutralisation, which saw three laps of the closing circuit taken out as well as the final 20km, meant that there would be no final chance for the sprinters to grab a win on the tricky 5%, 600-metre closing ramp.

It also meant that yellow jersey Frank van den Broek (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) could finish his race without any threat of attack from podium sitters Merhawi Kudus (Terengganu) and Paul Double (Polti-Kometa).

23-year-old Van den Broek now comes away from the Tour of Turkey with his first career stage race victory under his belt after triumphing on the queen stage summit finish at Manisa on Friday. He beats Kudus by four seconds in the overall standings while Double takes third overall, nine seconds down.

Elsewhere, Van den Broek's DSM teammate Tobias Lund Andresen completes a near-perfect week for the team, himself having won three stages to go with Van den Broek's triumph and Fabio Jakobsen 's opening stage victory.

Andresen comes away with the points jersey, having overhauled Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) with his third stage win on Saturday. Vinzent Dorn (Bike Aid) wins the mountain classification, while Q36.5 come away with the team prize.

Due to the slippery condition of the roads, it's been decided that stage 8 will be neutralised. The peloton will ride the planned route but only one lap instead of 5 and will proceed to Sultanahmet with the distinctive jerseys holders at the front of the peloton. #TUR2024 April 28, 2024
