Tour de T-Bone and Help Our Heroes Gumbo Cookoff are this Saturday
Get your bikes and utensils ready because this Saturday is the Tour de T-Bone cycling event and the return of South Louisiana Veteran Outreach's annual Gumbo Cookoff.
Tour de T-Bone, formerly known as Tour de Swamp, will kick off Saturday's series of events.
Cyclists will meet in the parking lot of the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, 7910 W. Park Ave., Houma, at 7:50 a.m. Saturday with the rollout set for 8 a.m. A former crew member of the USS Terrebonne will share a few words prior to the rollout, event organizer Stuart Babin said.
The ride, about 60 miles, will begin at the USS Terrebonne mural in Houma and will continue through Bourg and Montegut, with a turnaround point at the Isle de Jean Charles Marina. View the complete route at bit.ly/3Fvxf6F
Registration is free online, but cyclists are encouraged to make a donation to either Pastor's Army , a faith-based nonprofit in Houston that responds to natural disasters, or Houma-based South Louisiana Veteran Outreach, a nonprofit that assists local veterans in need. Cyclists are asked to register by Friday, Nov. 19.

South Louisiana Veteran Outreach's annual Help our Heroes Gumbo Cookoff, which held its first event in 2019, is back after canceling in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Entry to the event and admission to participate in the cookoff are both free this year in light of the damage inflicted on the community by Hurricane Ida. The event will be held in the downtown Houma Courthouse Square between noon and 4 p.m. Saturday.
As of Tuesday, at least 22 teams had registered to compete, according to the veteran outreach's president, Brok Torbert. Teams can register as late as 6 the morning of the event but must have their gumbo ready by noon.
Visitors will be able to sample the competitors' gumbo while supplies last. Burgers, kettle corn and beverages will be available for sale. The event will also include activities such as axe throwing, face painting, coloring sheets for children and live music.

Some dedicated cyclists and doctors are hitting the road in Massachusetts on Monday to drive awareness for patients needing financial support for bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants.
Rolling into the PMC Plaza at Dana Farber in Boston, a group of bikers prepared for another leg of a multi-purpose journey through a months-long bike event called Tour de TC.
They are pedaling to raise money and awareness for the National Marrow Donor Registry. Monday's ride will finish in Plymouth.
Bob Falkenberg was able to beat leukemia through the help of a bone marrow transplant match 13 years ago. Now, he rides for others who are still fighting and waiting.
“My donor signed up at a ‘Be the Match’ donor drive on a college campus,” Falkenberg said.
Dr. Cory Cutler is the medical director at Dana Farber’s Stem Cell Transplant Program. He said there are currently as many as 22 million donors already in the registry pool, but not all races are equally represented.
“It's very easy to become a donor," Cutler said. "If you’re not of western European or Caucasian descent, it’s much harder to find a match for you. So we’re really trying to do this to increase awareness and to increase our ranks in the donor pool."
"Some people are waiting a long time to find a match and some people sadly never do," Falkenberg said.
