Whether you like to plan healthy meals while you’re traveling, you have small children, or you have medical reasons for needing access to food during your flight, questions related to what food you can bring in your carry-on are extremely common.

A small bottle of water and a few snack-sized packages of pretzels or crackers are pretty much all you get on domestic economy flights these days — and that’s not going to cut it for a cross-country flight, making bringing your own food even more critical.

In this guide, we’ll break down the rules regarding what food and drinks you’re allowed to bring through TSA security, highlight some notable exceptions, and let you know how the rules might change when you travel internationally.

The Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, regulates what can pass through security checkpoints at the airport. Surprisingly, it allows almost all food items to pass through , so long as they are solid or comply with the 3-1-1 rule in the case of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes.

Hot Tip: The 3-1-1 rule states that you can carry on items   that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in a 1-quart-sized bag.

There is no limit to the amount of food you can bring on board , as long as it can fit in your carry-on luggage! You can also pack your food any way you’d like — in a lunch bag, in resealable plastic bags, in Tupperware, etc.

As the TSA says , “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it or pour it, and it’s larger than 3.4 ounces, then it should go in a checked bag,” or it will be thrown away.

Let’s dig into the details of what food is allowed through TSA security checkpoints and what food should likely go in your checked bag.

Baby Food, Formula, and Breast Milk

Thankfully, if you’re traveling with young children, the TSA makes exceptions to the 3.4-ounce liquid rule for breast milk, formula, juice, and baby food . You can bring these items on board in “ reasonable quantities ,” but be sure to notify the TSA officer as you’re going through the security checkpoint.

According to the TSA , “Inform the TSA officer if you do not want the formula, breast milk, and/or juice to be X-rayed or opened. Additional steps will be taken to clear the liquid and you or the traveling guardian will undergo additional screening procedures, [including] a pat-down and screening of other carry-on property.” This also applies to baby food pouches and jars.

This is also one of the few times partially melted ice packs  are allowed through security.

Hot Tip: Our detailed guide to flying with breast milk has everything you need to know, plus tips for making TSA screenings easier!

Canned Foods

Generally speaking, canned foods are allowed in carry-on luggage. However, the TSA recommends keeping them in your checked bag because m ost contain more than 3.4 ounces of liquid and they are hard to view on the X-ray machine, meaning that they will require extra screening.

Is the cheese you’re packing soft or solid? This will make the difference as to whether or not it will be allowed through TSA screening. While all solid cheese (like cheddar or manchego) is allowed, you cannot carry soft, creamy cheeses (like brie) that weigh more than 3.4 ounces in order to comply with the 3-1-1 rule. If you’re hoping to bring a larger quantity of soft cheese, it will need to be checked.

All types of cheese may require additional security screening at the discretion of the TSA agent.

Dips and Spreads

A snack-sized portion of dips — such as French onion or hummus — is fine to put in your carry-on. But if you’re hoping to bring a large container of your famous 7-layer dip, make sure you pack this in your checked luggage or just make it once you’ve reached your final destination.

This also applies to things like jelly, jams, honey, and peanut butter. So while your PB&J sandwich is allowed in the cabin, jars containing the individual ingredients won’t make it through TSA security unless they weigh 3.4 ounces or less.

Jars of Jam and Jelly

Frozen Foods

If you are going to bring anything frozen (like gravy, ice cream, or soup) through airport security, it must be completely solid. This includes whatever you’re using to keep your item frozen, such as ice, gel packs, or ice packs.

The TSA notes that items that are presented at security that “are partially melted, slushy, or have any liquid at the bottom of the container…must meet 3-1-1 liquids requirements.”

An alternative is to pack the frozen or partially frozen item in your checked luggage.

Fruits and Veggies

Good news — fresh snacks, like fruits and vegetables, are  allowed on the plane. Depending on your destination though, you may need to be sure to eat them all (or throw away any leftovers).

For example, if you are  flying to/from Hawaii , Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands from the U.S. mainland, you won’t be able to enter with most fresh fruits and vegetables due to the risk of spreading invasive plant pests. Visit the U.S. Department of Agriculture website for more details.

International destinations may also have similar restrictions when it comes to fruits and vegetables. If you don’t finish or dispose of the items, you will need to declare them, and some items are prohibited altogether.

Mashed Potatoes

Any kind of mashed potatoes or mashed veggies are allowed in your carry-on luggage. Be sure that there are no liquids (like gravy or stew) of more than 3.4 ounces, though!

Meats and Seafood

Meat and seafood, whether cooked, raw, whole, or sliced, are fine to bring on board your flight. These items might be subject to additional screening, so be prepared for a TSA officer to ask you to remove the meat or seafood from your luggage.

Be careful — while meat and seafood items are allowed, you may still run into issues with any cooling equipment you bring. For example, if you bring an ice pack to keep your meat or seafood cool, it must be completely frozen or it will be subject to the 3-1-1 rule. It would be unfortunate for your meat or seafood to be spoiled upon arrival!

Pies, Cakes, and Baked Goods

Pies, cakes, and other baked goods are permitted through the TSA security checkpoint. They may require additional screening, so be sure they are easily accessible.

Bringing Baked Goods on Airplane

As we’ve noted, any liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces are off-limits to bring through security. This makes bringing water (or enough of it to make a difference) or even your morning cup of coffee on your travels difficult. Generally, you have 3 options when it comes to bringing drinks through TSA security checkpoints:

  • Buy an overpriced drink once you pass through security. Everything from a latte to a smoothie or a bottled soda to overpriced water is OK to bring on board and to your airport seat.
  • Bring frozen water or juice.  See more details below.
  • Bring your own water bottle  or coffee mug and fill it up once you’ve passed through security.

Bottled Water and Drinks

All water bottles and drinks must be less than 3.4 ounces unless they are considered solid . Freezing your drinks may or may not help as they will obviously need to thaw before you’re able to consume them. If you have a long flight or are limited in your diet, this trick could definitely come in handy, though!

Hot Tip: If you have a medical condition that requires you to travel with liquids, you are allowed for these items to exceed 3.4 ounces. It is always best to inform the TSA officer before screening and be prepared for the liquid to receive additional screening.

Alcohol is actually allowed in your carry-on as long as it’s less than 140-proof, but …

While you are able to bring mini-liquor bottles under 3.4 ounces through security, you aren’t actually allowed to consume them during your flight. This applies to any duty-free alcohol you might purchase in the airport as well. So make sure you keep alcohol securely stashed in your carry-on!

As a reminder, once you’re through security, all food and drinks are fair game. This means anything you buy post-security, you can bring and consume on the plane.

Still not sure about carry-on a specific item? Check out our article on what not to pack in your carry-on luggage according to the TSA or our more exhaustive list of items you can and cannot bring through TSA security .

If you’re still not finding the answer you want, you can also try the “Can I Bring?” feature on the MyTSA app or send a message to TSA via Facebook Messenger or Twitter . Representatives usually respond within a few hours if you contact them during business hours.

We hope we’ve been able to break down what food and drinks you can (and can’t) bring on board your next flight. There are definitely a lot of options if you’re hoping to find some TSA-approved snacks for your next flight. Solid foods and smaller portions of soft cheeses, dips, and liquids are perfectly acceptable and will go through the screening process with no issues.

Just remember, if you’re in doubt, you can always put the item in your checked luggage or purchase some food or drinks after you go through the TSA security checkpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you bring food through airport security.

Yes, solid food is allowed through TSA security in any amount. If the item is considered a liquid, paste, cream, gel, or aerosol, it is still allowed, but must be smaller than 3.4 ounces. Otherwise, you’ll be required to check the item or throw it out.

Can you bring snacks on a plane?

What snacks you can bring (and the amount) depends on what you’re hoping to bring. Fruits, vegetables, baked goods, sandwiches, chips, etc. are fine, but if the item you’re hoping to snack on is a paste or a cream (think dips or spreads), then it will need to be smaller than 3.4 ounces.

Can I bring food on an international flight?

You can bring food on an international flight, but for fresh fruit and vegetables, you’ll need to finish eating those before arriving at your destination. This also applies to certain domestic locations, like Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Always check your final destination’s rules and regulations before arriving to avoid any issues.

What food can’t you take on a plane?

Liquids, creams, and pastes that are larger than 3.4 ounces (like jars of peanut butter and jelly, honey, and big containers of hummus), won’t be allowed through TSA security checkpoints. You can always check these items, though!

Also, if you’re hoping to bring liquids that are larger than 3.4 ounces in your carry-on, they must be totally frozen.

Why is TSA checking food?

All items that pass through TSA security checkpoints are screened, including food and drinks. The TSA screens items to “prevent prohibited items and other threats to transportation security from entering the sterile area of the airport.”

It can be hard to tell exactly what an item is when items pass through the X-ray machine, so TSA might need to check your food items to ensure they are allowed.

Skip Overpriced Airport Food: How to Pack Food and Drink for a Flight

If you’ve ever reluctantly spent $7 on a bottle of water or $30 on a mediocre meal at an airport, know that there’s a better way. Packing a meal and snacks ahead of time for your next flight will not only save you money, but will also be way tastier and more satisfying than buying food at the airport (or subjecting yourself to the in-flight meal).

Follow these tips to pack the best food for your next flight and save your money for a splurge meal at your destination.

What Foods Can’t You Bring on a Plane?

There aren’t any foods that are specifically banned from bringing on a plane—the important thing to consider is if the TSA will consider your food a liquid. The TSA’s definition of “liquid” is stricter than most people’s, as the agency considers spreadables, like peanut butter or cream cheese, to be liquids. You can still bring these foods through security, but they will have to meet the 3-1-1 rule .

Although you can bring alcohol onboard a plane, you can’t consume it. Per FAA regulations , passengers can only drink alcohol that was served by a flight attendant. This applies to alcohol purchased at duty-free shops in the airport as well, so make sure you keep your liquor bottles sealed in-flight.

8 Foods You Should Never Eat Before Flying

The Best Foods to Pack for Air Travel

Flying at a high altitude of 35,000 feet puts your body (and digestive system) under stress, so the best pre- and mid-flight meals are ones that are easy to digest. Opt for foods that are low-sodium (to reduce swelling) and skip the fried, greasy foods in favor of lean protein that will keep you satisfied but won’t upset your stomach.

Remember—just because you can bring it on a plane, doesn’t mean you should. Since you’ll be tightly packed in next to your seatmates, avoid bringing food that’s smelly or messy to eat.

These are my favorite snacks and meals to bring on a plane.

Catalina Crunch Cereal

Multiple packages in a variety of flavors of Catalina Crunch cereal

Regular cereal makes for a quick and easy breakfast or snack, but it’s not very filling. Instead, pack Catalina Crunch , a high-protein cereal that comes in tasty flavors like cinnamon toast. It’s as delicious eaten dry for a snack as it is with milk. Single-serving pouches make these easy to throw in your bag for an on-the-go snack.

Ginger Chews

Ginger chews in a variety of package sizes

If you tend to get motion sick while flying, pack some ginger chews —ginger is a proven natural remedy for nausea. Plus, chewing on something while the plane is taking off and landing can help with any pressure in your ears.

Bada Bean Bada Boom

Box of Bada Bean Bada Boom snacks (left) and man eating snacks from package (right)

For a healthier alternative to the chips being served as an in-flight snack, try Bada Bean Bada Boom . These roasted fava beans come in chip-like flavors such as mesquite barbecue and sweet sriracha, but offer four times the protein and five times the fiber of potato chips—so you’ll stay full until you land.

GoMacro Bars

Variety of flavors of GoMacro bars

Protein bars are the easiest snacks to pack for travel. We like GoMacro because of the bar’s simple ingredients. Opt for the FODMAP friendly variety pack which only includes flavors with stomach-friendly ingredients.

ZENB Pasta Agile Bowls

Multiple flavors of ZENB Pasta Agile Bowls and an overhead shot of an open bowl with seasoning packets on the side

If you want a bargain-priced hot meal while traveling, pack Zenb Pasta’s Agile Bowls . Get a cup of hot water from an airport coffee shop and add it to the bowl, and you’ll have a warm and filling pasta dish ready in about five minutes.

Should You Recline Your Seat on a Plane?

The Best Gear for Traveling With Food

Traveling with food requires a little prep work, as well as investing in some gear that will keep your food at the perfect temperature and contained (without leaks) throughout your whole trip. These gadgets can help.

Ninja Foodi Power Blender Ultimate System

Various components of the Ninja Foodi Power Blender Ultimate System

Before a recent long flight, I stopped at a cafe and impulse bought a smoothie bowl, accidentally discovering my new favorite travel food. When frozen solid, a smoothie or smoothie bowl can be brought through airport security. It stays cold for hours, and will become the perfect consistency to eat once you’re in the air. Packed with fruits and vegetables, a smoothie bowl is a very soothing and filling meal that’s easy to digest and will also help keep you hydrated.

To save money and make the perfect smoothie bowl at home, I use the Ninja Foodi Power Blender Ultimate System . This powerful blender is designed for makings smoothie bowls, and comes with a smoothie bowl that you can blend right into for an easy meal on-the-go.

All I have to do is dump in a small amount of liquid and any frozen ingredients that I want, and the Ninja instantly pulverizes it into the perfect smoothie bowl consistency.

The system doubles as a food processor too, so you can also use it to chop vegetables and make dip to bring with you (vegetables and dip make a great plane snack).

Hot Logic self-cooking lunch box

It might seem impossible to have a good, warm, in-flight meal (we’ll pass on the reheated meals served by the airlines), but it’s easy to do if you have a Ho t Logic . This magic lunchbox can actually cook a hot meal for you—you just need access to a regular plug like you’ll find on most planes.

The Hot Logic uses conduction heating and can warm up leftovers in about 30 minutes, or cook a frozen meal in two hours. You can even cook it from scratch—it will make a meal in about one to two hours.

Don’t worry about making all the other passengers jealous (or mad) with the Hot Logic—the enclosed container keeps the smell of your food inside while it’s cooking.

How to Score Affordable Airport Lounge Access

PackIt Freezable lunch box

Ice packs can leak, cause a mess, and potentially be confiscated by the TSA. Eliminate them entirely by using the PackIt Freezable Lunch Bag to keep your food cold instead. This uniquely designed lunchbox has a freezable gel built directly into the walls of the bag. Simply freeze the entire bag and it will keep your food cold for up to eight hours.

Add in the brand’s bento containers , which have removable dividers, to create your own custom snack box that’s cheaper and better than anything you can buy on the plane. I like to use it to pack a fun deconstructed snack board with cheese, crackers, veggies, and dips.

Multiple colors of the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug in a variety of sizes

Although you can’t bring a full water bottle through airport security, you can bring an empty one—which you can then fill up from the airport’s water fountain. Zojirushi’s Stainless Steel Mug will keep that water cold for hours, and it has a leak-proof lock that will prevent any spills in your bag.

When you get to your destination, you can reuse it as a coffee mug, as it will keep beverages piping hot for a really long time.

Can You Bring Food Through TSA? These 9 Types of Snacks Are Allowed in Carry-On Luggage

By Cynthia Drescher

Woman choosing between healthy and unhealthy food. Character thinking over organic or junk snacks choice. Vector...

Can you bring food through TSA checkpoints ? The question is common enough that the agency itself frequently shares clarifications on social media—such as its March 2023 tweet declaring peanut butter a liquid, that, much to the chagrin of fliers, is limited to 3.4 ounces in carry-on bags. But whether you're trying to bring home a local delicacy, pack breast milk or formula to keep a baby fed in flight, or just plain forgot about the cured meats in your carry-on until you were in the airport security line, TSA food rules can be confusing.

The short answer is yes, you can take food through TSA—you'll just might encounter some trouble the closer those foods are to a liquid. The long answer is that whether your food meets airport security's requirements comes down to a few guidelines.

“If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then it’s considered a liquid or gel,” says Mark Howell, regional spokesperson for the TSA. That means it falls under the 3-1-1 liquids rule , which mandates that any liquid, gel, cream, aerosol, or paste in a carry-on must be 3.4 ounces or less, and fit in one quart-size resealable bag (only one such bag is allowed per passenger).

Still, even if a food item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the airport security checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other airport security concerns.

Here's everything you need to know about bringing food through airport security and onto your flight.

What foods are—and are not—allowed on a plane?

1. baby food, baby formula, and breast milk.

Baby formula, breast milk, toddler drinks like juices, and baby or toddler food (including puree pouches) of “reasonable quantities” are allowed in carry-on baggage and do not need to fit within a quart-sized bag, as the TSA considers them to be medically necessary liquids. The TSA also recommends using clear or translucent bottles when possible for these items.

This allowance to bring baby food notably extends to breast milk and baby formula–cooling accessories, such as ice packs, freezer packs, and gel packs. This is true whether or not your child is traveling with you. The TSA does, however, recommend letting the officers know that you are carrying these things at the beginning of the screening process so they can be properly handled and potentially flagged for additional screening.

2. Creamy dips and spreads; canned, jarred, and bottled items

If a cheese or other foodstuff is spreadable, like cream cheese, peanut butter, ranch dressing, or Nutella, then traveling with it in your carry-on means packing in line with that 3-1-1 liquids rule explained above (unless it's already in a sandwich, in which case you should be fine.)

Cranberry sauce may be integral to a holiday meal, but unless you’ve decanted it into a bottle of 3.4 ounces or less, its gelatinous consistency puts it too far into liquid rules territory to be allowed in a carry-on. Cans of cranberry sauce—along with other similarly jiggly and pourable foods or creamy dips and spreads—must be in checked baggage. These include gravy, containers of frosting, jams, jellies, soft butter, honey, syrups, salsa, dips, chutney, spreads, soup, pudding, salad dressing, and other food items that resemble these, such as mustard or hummus, which respectively qualify as a spread and a dip.

As always,  alcohol goes with other liquids are allowed in your carry-on, provided they are in containers of 3.4 ounces or less, all fitting inside that clear, quart-size baggie. It is against FAA law , however, to consume personal alcohol on an airplane.

3. Seafood and meats

Meats—whether cooked, raw, whole, or sliced—are fine to bring onboard your flight. Nonetheless, be courteous when you take food through TSA; seal it up well, and aim to keep any smells or juices contained. Consider extra packaging materials that seal, just in case the cling wrap hits a snag. Eggs are also allowed onboard, and they don’t even need to be hard-boiled—but again, packaging here is crucial.

As we discovered in 2017 when the TSA found (and cleared) a 20-pound lobster in someones luggage , clawed crustaceans and other frozen seafood are allowed as carry-on or checked baggage, with the proper packaging and labeling. Some airports, like those in Boston and Halifax, even sell ready-to-fly boxes of lobsters, fitting up to 10 in one box and packing them with bags of frozen peas, instead of ice packs or gel blocks.

4. Pies, cakes, and donuts

A fresh-baked pie or cake in your bag may tempt TSA agents into a weak joke about taste-testing, but pies and cakes are allowed as carry-ons—whether whole or sliced. Apple dumplings, cupcakes, brownies, fritters, donuts (filled or not, interestingly), cookies, gingerbread, dry baking mixes, and even fruitcake are okay to fly in the cabin. They do count as carry-on items , though, and you may be asked to put them underneath the seat in front of you, as opposed to the overhead bin.

Sweets still must pass through the X-ray machine at the airport security checkpoint, so TSA agents will quickly determine if the item needs additional screening to see if there’s anything more dangerous than ganache at the center of those truffles.

5. Hand sanitizer

Although not a food, hand sanitizer is food-adjacent in that you’ll be happy to have it on-hand (pun intended) when and if you decide to snack, for cleaning your tray table and hands before eating. It is a specific exception to the 3-1-1 rule, initiated in March 2020 when the U.S. declared the COVID-19 pandemic a national emergency and the TSA relaxed the limitation on hand sanitizer in carry-ons, raising the allowance from 3 to 12 ounces (one bottle per traveler). This is still the case, “until further notice,” according to the TSA’s official website .

6. Everything else

Still not finding your answer? Double-check that the food item that you want to fly with isn’t in the TSA list of prohibited items. If still in doubt, try the “ What Can I Bring? ” feature on the MyTSA app and website, or snap a photo of the item and send your question directly to the TSA via Twitter (@AskTSA), Facebook Messenger , Apple Business Chat (AskTSA), or text ‘Travel’ to AskTSA (275-872).

Foods you shouldn't bring on a plane

In general, we recommend abiding by a version of the Golden Rule modified for air travel: Only take food through TSA and onto a plane that you yourself wouldn't mind smelling if someone else brought it.

Traveler editors have a lot to say when it comes to the controversial topic of what foods are socially acceptable to bring and consume on a plane. In summary? Leave the ridiculously crunchy, overly pungent, and grossly sticky foods at home. As for problematic foods, anything which could cause another passenger to have an allergic reaction—such as peanuts—is always a risk, so opt for another impulse snack at the airport grab-n-go.

Remember: You can always check it

Whether it’s ingredients for mom's famous casserole or a batch of brownies, tucking your food into your checked baggage is almost always a safer bet. Checked bags aren’t party to the liquid rules of carry-on luggage, so liquids, creamy dips and spreads, and foods like honey, salsa, jam, and soft cheeses—the ones that fall into that questionable gray area between a liquid and solid and won't be let through at TSA security checkpoints—are always best in checked baggage.

If your food needs to stay cold, pack it in your checked baggage with frozen ice packs or gel packs (or use bags of frozen peas), but remember to be careful to always pull them out of the freezer the moment before you leave for the airport to ensure maximum frozenness.

As with any food you bring into the cabin, be mindful of the odor of foods you check into your luggage, too. If you’re flying with food that has a strong scent—say, onion bagels or certain cheeses—wrap them well or place them in a sturdy freezer bag so the other contents of your luggage don't spend the flight simmering in the stench. That Roquefort you purchased in Paris may taste great, but it's not as nice as a perfume.

The Hot Cold Insulated Food Bag can keep your food warm or cold, depending on your need. And it does that for a very low price. When you see the price tag, you’ll think that this is a product that doesn’t deserve your attention, but that’s far from the truth. Unlike other food bags at this price, this one is durable enough to carry food of up to 30 pounds and is made of waterproof material. It is not as good-looking as other bags, but it is certainly worth what you’ll pay.

Rachael Ray Universal Thermal Carrier

The second insulated food bag from the Rachael Ray line was made strictly for storing food and transporting it around while keeping it warm or cold. The combination of a radiant barrier and insulation won’t let it lose the temperature you desire. The only downside of this bag is the possibility for smaller dishes to slide around, but if you need something for larger ones, this bag provides enough quality. As with other Rachael Ray products, this one comes in several colors and patterns as well.

Sothread Insulated Food Bag

Sothread provides some of the best-looking insulated food bags out there. Too bad they come only in small dimensions. They are perfect for carrying your lunch, but you can’t carry a whole lasagna dish with you. Still, they are of great quality, stylish, and inexpensive. If you are looking for a small food bag, you won’t find a better one.

Crock-Pot Travel Insulated Food Bag

The name says a lot. This is a food bag intended for traveling and keeping your food warm during a longer trip. Feel free to put 4- to 7-quart slow cookers inside. It will fit them all. It also features an inside strap for carrying them tight during transportation. The high-quality zippers only add to the safety. If you thought that these features would have a high price tag, you’re wrong. The best part is that this is one of the most inexpensive insulated food bags you can find!

Rachael Ray Expandable Lasagna Lugger Insulated Food Bag

We consider the Rachel Ray Expandable Lasagna Lugger Insulated Food Bag to be the best one on the market. It is not due to the famous name behind the trademark but the features that allow for easy carrying of food while keeping it warm.

This bag offers lots of space in the main compartment, but if that’s not enough for all your food, you can use the expandable compartment for extra capacity. You also have a large mesh zippered pocket available with enough room for utensils.

The lining is easy to clean. The bag also features handles for easier carrying. It comes in several different colors, so it is unlikely that you’ll have a hard time choosing this as an option to meet all your needs.

Pwrxtreme Insulated Food Bag

The greatest asset of the Pwrxtreme Insulated Food Bag is its great selection of materials. It is made of a nylon material that ensures great durability for the occasions when you carry lots of food, while the insulation is secured by leak-proof foam.

It is spacious enough to fit heavy food storage containers along with travel water bottles if you want to have hot drinks when you arrive at your destination. It’s also very easy to clean. A simple wipe with a cloth will do the job.

MIER Insulated Double Food Bag

You need to cook a lot to fill all the space of the MIER Insulated Double Food Bag. It has two large compartments that can easily fit most 9 x 13-inch baking dishes. They allow using one of them for a hot dish and the other one for a cold one, too, without disturbing the temperatures of the other compartment. Also, it features a large mesh zippered pocket for storing utensils. For the price, a bag with these features is a very good deal.

Bopika Insulated Food Bag

The Bopika Insulated Food Bag is small and compact. It won’t let you carry a casserole for your potluck, but if you want to take some warm snacks with you, it’s got you covered. It also features a mesh pocket for carrying a small bottle and an exterior pocket for your smartphone and other small items. It is made of a high-quality 600D oxford, which guarantees that it will last quite a while.

Risen Gear Insulated Food Bag

This one is a delivery bag, but why would that prevent you from using it for other purposes? It is large, spacious, and fits more than one dish. It has enough room to store warm food for the whole family. Aside from the high-grade aluminum lining that reflects the heat from your dishes, it comes with a shoulder strap and extra handle. You’ll also love the fact that it is fully foldable for better storage when you’re not using it.

CleverMade SnapBasket Insulated Food Bag

The CleverMade SnapBasket Insulated Food Bag is made of 50% Polyester, 35% Polyethylene Vinyl Acetate, 10% Polypropylene, 3% MDF, and 2% ABS. This might mean nothing to you, but you should know that it guarantees the durability of this food bag. If you want it to keep your food warm, it will keep it warm. If you want it cold, it can help with that as well. This food bag is a good choice for any occasion when you need to transport food at a certain temperature.

Tiger LWY-T046 Insulated Food Bag

This is a whole food set. The food bag is only a part of it and is insulated. It will let you keep the temperature of the food whether you want it hot or cold. Aside from the bag, this food set features two stainless steel thermal cases, a food container, and a utensil. It is a great deal for the price.

NZ Home Reusable Insulated Food Bags

The NZ Home Reusable Insulated Food Bags were made for bringing groceries home. That means that the seller relies on the cooling feature, but it also helps food stay warm inside. So, why not use it as a bag for transporting your hot or cold dishes? The materials promise great strength, and it provides a lot of space for an inexpensive price. It is certainly worth your attention.

Earthwise Insulated Reusable Food Bags

The Earthwise Insulated Reusable Food Bags were made with the grocery shopper in mind, but the wise cook will also know that these food bags are perfect for storing and transporting food, both hot and cold. The fully insulated lining will keep your dishes at the temperature that you desire. And feel free to fill them with lots of food. The extra side handles allow you to carry heavy loads easily.

Rachael Ray Insulated Grocery Shopping Food Bag

Rachael Ray’s insulated food bags are all high-quality, and this one is no exception. It was made of the same insulating materials as the other Rachael Ray bags featured on this list. This one differs for its purpose. It was made for grocery shopping. It features a zipper to prevent the room temperature air entering the bag and raising or lowering the temperature of your dishes. It also features sturdy handles for better carrying.

Lebogner Insulated Grocery Food Bag

Cold or warm, the Lebogner Insulated Grocery Food Bag will keep your food just the way you want it. Put a warm dish inside, zip it quickly to keep the heat inside, and enjoy your trip. The food will stay warm for the next few hours. Yes, it was made as a grocery bag, but don’t let that prevent you from buying and using it for your cooked or chilled dishes. This bag will do the job.

33 Easy Travel Snacks for your Airplane Carry-On Bag

Sharing is caring!

This post may contain affiliate links to products we recommend. You can read our disclosure for more information.

When I travel, the foodie in me always has to bring snacks for the trip. I always plan for easy travel snacks for a few reasons. For starters I’m not always sure what terminal I’ll be in at the airport so the food choices might get dicey once I get past security. Next, depending on the airline I’m flying there might not be great options once I board the plane (we’ve all been there). Lastly, I like to be prepared when I’m traveling even when I arrive at my final destination to have quick portable fuel sources on hand for when *hangry* hits in the form of easy travel snacks.

In this blog post I’ve compiled all of my favorite easy travel snacks into one ultimate packing list for your carry-on bag and I’ll walk you through my process for what to consider when selecting the best snacks to bring on a plane.

easy travel snacks

How to Pack Easy Travel Snacks for your Carry-On Bag

Depending on the length of my trip I usually bring a variety of snacks intended to carry-on a plane. I consider these easy to pack snacks, snacks that travel well, and also snacks that fall into the healthy(ish) convenience food category following these guidelines:

  • Food I can’t find at my final travel destination

Drink Mixers

  • Airport Snacks (snacks to bring on a plane and at the airport terminal)
  • Emergency snacks (for when I’m super hungry)
  • Perishables
  • Non-Perishables
  • Sweet Treats/Comfort Items

These categories might look a little different for you but it helps to determine what you might need at least a week before your trip so that you have time to shop around. This will also help to keep your trip planning a little less stressful so that you can spend your time concentrating on the last minute things you need to do before you go out of town.

To verify what easy travel snacks you can and cannot carry on flights check out TSA’s security guidelines and the rules of each country for International flights. Keep in mind that TSA considers foods like yogurts and cooked oatmeal as “gels” and they will be confiscated at security (I learned this the hard way). For any other liquids review the guidelines but generally speaking most liquids and gels are allowed if they are less than 3.4oz/100 ml.

How to Transport your Easy Travel Snacks

My last consideration for packing easy travel snacks are the containers the food will travel in. For the most part I lean towards things that are easy to dispose of like foil, wax paper, plastic baggies, and repurposed takeout containers. However, in consideration of the environment I often try to lean to more sustainable options if I can, such as: silicon bags, collapsible cups, collapsible bowls, insulated containers, and beeswax paper.

The con to these items is you will have to carry them in your luggage throughout your trip. But the pro of these items is being environmentally responsible, having a vessel you can reuse throughout your trip for something else, and some of these containers can keep your snacks from getting crushed, hot, or cold (triple bonus).

I like Stasher Bags and Zip Top Bags for a reusable bag option. Both of these brands are super durable, always hold up really well for traveling, and are great to repurpose for other easy travel snacks on a trip.

Silicone Bags

Zip Top Bags

We love these bags for items that can’t lay flat! The structure of the bag makes it easy to carry your snacks and keep them from being crushed in your carry-on luggage.

Collapsible bowls have also been one of my favorites for eating things like oatmeal on the go and pre-made meals I might travel with (in an effort to clean out my fridge before I head out of town). I also like these collapsible cups from Stojo to make drinks portable and they don’t take up much room. If you have space for something bigger I like using the Snack Swell thermos containers for some travel foods on my trips since its a small insulated container to keep food hot or cold.

If you are traveling with any items that must stay at a colder temperature these PackIt Freezable pouches are a great option to transport your food. The PackIt Freezable pouch has groundbreaking cooling technology that includes freezable gel that is permanently built into the bag so that you don’t need to deal with separate ice packs.

To start collapse the bag flat and freeze in the freezer overnight until you are ready to use it. You can add any of the easy travel snacks that are perishable items in this post to store in this bag. You can also keep this item throughout your trip for other easy to pack snacks.

PackIt Freezable Snack Box, Rainbow Sky, Built with EcoFreeze Technology, Collapsible, Reusable, Zip Closure with Buckle Handle, Great for All Ages and Fresh Snacks on the go

PackIt Freezable Pouch

This is our favorite travel product for traveling with items that are perishable and need to remain cold like yogurt and cheese. Simply pop the pouch in the freezer the night before your trip and it will keep your perishable snacks at the correct temperature for a few hours. This collapsible and folds up and comes in many colors!

My last favorite sustainable travel item is reusable wax paper. I like using the Bee’s Wrap brand. It takes a bit to get used to if you normally use regular wax paper. If you have a few baked goods, sandwiches etc. to carry while traveling it comes in handy to reuse a few times and store it completely flat in your carry on bag.

Order of Operations For Your Easy Travel Snacks

If you are planning to take some snacks to the airport for future travel plans my suggested cheat sheet of how to go about eating your easy travel snacks includes a simple order of consumption:

  • Eat your perishable items first (for obvious reasons)
  • Pack napkins and/or wet wipes (these are not always available as you are on the go)
  • If you are bringing whole fruit wash these items before you get to the airport and use your napkin or paper towel as the vessel to carry the item (it also doubles as a napkin as you eat your fruit)
  • Pack some travel utensils (for any snacks that require some deep diving or for complete meals)

My favorite snacks to bring on a plane.

Below is an easy travel snack list I’ve compiled of my favorite airport (and TSA) friendly snacks. I’ve grouped the items into perishable vs. non-perishable categories since I often will travel with a few perishable items that I strategize to eat first and then work my way through the rest of my snack stash either on the trip or eat other items during a longer flight to tide me over until I reach my destination.

Perishable Easy Travel Snacks

For perishable easy travel snacks I always tend to pack food that can last a while at room temperature. Regardless of the length of your flight you’ll want items that won’t go bad in case it takes a while to get through security or to the airport (we’ve all been there!). Or even worse if your flight is delayed (done that!). On my list I usually include:

Cured Meats and Deli Meats

This includes salami, pastrami, pepperoni, ham, and turkey. These are great options because they can travel well at room temperature for short periods of time.

I think everyone loves cheese (even us lactose intolerant folks) and it travels well for short periods of time at room temperature. Some of my favorite cheese options are the Babybel Gouda Semisoft Cheeses. I like these because they have their own carrying case with the wax they are packaged in which qualifies the product as easy travel snack in my book.

My next favorite is Trader Joe’s Tapas cheese (it’s amazing! Grab it if you have a TJs near you). This includes several slices of three types of cheese including: Iberico, Cabra Al Vino (a.k.a. “ Drunken Goat “), and Manchengo. I really enjoy how the flavors in this set are so different and it feels very fancy while you are enjoying them.

Boiled Eggs

Boiled eggs are one of the best snacks for traveling. I typically boil eggs once a week so I’ll grab 2-4 for a flight or whatever is left over in my fridge for the week (this is also a good way to clean out your fridge before you head out of town). You can also purchase eggs that are already boiled from almost any local grocery store for an easy travel snack on an airplane.

Another fun option for hard boiled eggs is from a brand called Perfectly Peckish which sells hard boiled eggs in packs with a fun crunchy dip. Their selection includes:

  • PECKISH Snackable Eggs & EVERYTHING Dip
  • PECKISH Snackable Eggs & FRIED RICE Dip
  • PECKISH Snackable Eggs & RANCHEROS Dip
  • PECKISH Snackable Eggs & SALT & PEPITAS Dip
  • PECKISH Snackable Eggs & RANCH Dip

Check out their store locator to find a store that sells these near you .

Crackers and/or Bread

I personally can’t have cheese and cured/deli meat without crackers or bread! These are easy to transport and can be stored at various temperatures which make them a great addition to your carry-on bag for an easy snack pairing (and crunch)!

Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers, Fine Ground Sea Salt Snack Packs - Gluten Free, Vegan, Healthy Snacks, 4.9 Ounce (Pack of 3)

I love fruit for an easy snack that travels well. The fruit that travels the best are apples, bananas, oranges, kiwi, and grapes. I like these fruits because they have their own “skin” which can serve as its own carrying case so that they don’t get squashed (thanks mother nature!).

For oranges you can even pre-slice these and add them to a travel container or baggie to eat right out of the peel (or peel them later). And for kiwi I like slicing these in half and using a spoon to scoop out the insides for easy eating. If you have never tried Golden Kiwi its a real treat (they taste like a cross between a mango and a strawberry)!

Putting It Together

Combining these items also creates a nice balance for traveling to ensure you have enough protein, fat, and carbohydrates for fuel while on the go. You can also pair the meats, cheese, and crackers or bread and make a makeshift sandwich in a pinch (great easy travel snack idea!). You can also grab some pre-made snack boxes for a perishable option to take through security.

Non-Perishable Travel Snacks

My favorite non-perishable easy travel snack list is a bit longer. I group these by foods I might eat on the plane or at my final destination as I get hungry or peckish.

I eat oatmeal almost daily when I’m home for breakfast so it’s an item I always travel with especially internationally since it’s not something that all countries will provide for breakfast. It’s also a really nice snack on a plane since you just need water to make it. You can use one of the collapsible bowls or cups I mentioned above as the vessel to make these in or any disposable cup at the airport. I typically use the McCann Irish Oatmeal brand because it’s very hearty as a travel snack or the Unsweetened Individual Oatmeal packets from Trader Joe’s .

McCann’s Regular Instant Irish Oatmeal, 11.85 ounce, 12 Packets

Bringing nuts on a flight can be controversial so be sure to read your airline’s individual rules regarding what is allowed. I like going for the individually portioned nuts that are completely sealed in case I can’t eat them on a particular flight due to restrictions or nut allergies. If that’s the case I can always have them as a snack at my final destination.

My favorite nut options for an easy travel snack include:

  • Macadamia Nuts
  • Trail Mix (for something different)

Emerald Nuts, 100 Calorie Variety Pack, 18 Count

Crunchy Snacks

Personally I’m a big fan of crunchy snacks in general but definitely when I travel. I think it’s nice to have a variety of items on hand. For this category I pack:

I usually air pop popcorn and bring it in my reusable silicon bag for trips. Did you know that you can air pop popcorn in a brown paper bag in the microwave? I also like these individually wrapped White Cheddar Popcorn bags from Smartfood .

Smartfood Popcorn, White Cheddar, 0.625 Ounce (Pack of 40)

Peanut Butter Crackers

I also like bringing Peanut Butter Crackers as easy travel snacks for my final destination. These have saved me many times while traveling to have something to tide me over until my next meal.

Lance Sandwich Crackers, Toasty and Toastchee Peanut Butter, 40 Ct (Pack of 2)

There’s something nostalgic about Chex Mix that just makes it a travel staple! I use to have these all the time as a kid on trips. I usually will grab the individual baggies for my carry-on bag.

Chex Mix Classics Snack Mix, 1.75 Ounce (Pack of 30)

I also always grab Cheez-Its for a fun crunchy cheesy snack.

Cheez-It Cheese Crackers, Baked Snack Crackers, Office and Kids Snacks, Variety Pack, 17.72oz Box (20 Pouches)

Moon Cheese

These are a newer to me product. I saw them once at Starbucks and then purchased them last year from Target and I’m a fan! These are little cheese balls that come in different flavors. If you like cheese and something with a crunch you’ll like these little cheese balls as a snack.

Moon Cheese Variety Pack of 5, 1 of each (Cheddar Believe It, Oh My Gouda, Garlickin Parmesan, Get Pepper Jacked, White Chedda Black Peppa) GF, High Protein, Low Carb, Keto Friendly, 100% Real Cheese

Anytime I think of pretzels I think of that Seinfeld episode “these pretzels are making me thirsty” but they still make for a great easy travel snack!

Snyder's of Hanover Mini Pretzels, 100 Calorie Individual Packs, 36 Ct

Veggie Straws

Veggie straws are the perfect easy travel snack to take on the go! They are both crunchy and salty which you is always needed on the road.

Sensible Portions Garden Veggie Straws, cheddar cheese, cheese, Snack Size, 24 Count

Marinated Vegetables

This might be an odder pick but eating vegetables on the go is hard so I love this option. POSHI Vegetable Snacks offers a marinated steamed portable snack option. If you like pickled vegetables you will like these! Plus you can add a little fiber to you day while in transit.

POSHI Marinated Vegetables Variety Pack | Asparagus, French Beans, Cauliflower, Artichoke | Keto, Vegan, Paleo, Non GMO, Gluten Free, Gourmet, Healthy, Fully Cooked (12 Pack)

Snack Olives

If you’ve never had olives while on an airplane you are missing out! Something about eating olives at 42,000 feet cruising in the air is a totally different experience. I like buying these Olives to Go from the grocery store and Trader Joe’s also sells individually packed Olive packs which are so yummy. I was inspired to add Olives to my easy travel snack list after having the Mediterranean Travel Snack box on a United Flight which has a great mix of olives, bruschetta, hummus, and chocolate almonds as a great snack mix.

Mario Camacho Foods Pitted Snack Olives, Variety Pack, 1.05 oz Pouches (Pack of 12)

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit is a really fun easy travel snack! My favorite picks are dried apples and mangoes. They make such a sweet treat and they are also crunchy (or chewy).

Bare Baked Crunchy, Apples Fuji & Reds, 0.53 Ounce (Pack of 16)

When traveling with dips always choose brands that are shelf stable so that they can fall into the perishable category. If you go this route you should plan to consume the entire package in your trip since they will need to be refrigerated once opened.

Mezete Tahini Rich Hummus Assortment, 100% All-Natural Dips and Spreads, Ready to Go Vegan Dip, Shelf-Stable with No Preservatives and Requires No Refrigeration, 7.5 Ounce (Pack of 6)

Something Sweet

Honey stinger organic waffles.

Honey Stinger Organic Waffles are sweet yummy waffles that double as a healthy(ish) treat. These pack really easily in your carry-on or a day pack on your trip and make them one the best snacks for traveling.

Honey Stinger Organic Waffles - Variety Pack – 16 Count – 4 of Each Flavor – Energy Source for Any Activity – Honey, Vanilla, Salted Caramel and Cinnamon – in Original Bee The Bear Box

Brownies & Cookies

Brownies and Cookies fall into a comfort item category for me. It’s nice to always have a sweet treat on hand but also something you are familiar with. I like the Nature’s Bakery brand Brownies and old faithful Nabisco Cookies like Oreos.

OREO Original, OREO Golden, CHIPS AHOY! & Nutter Butter Cookie Snacks Variety Pack, 56 Snack Packs (2 Cookies Per Pack)

Fruit Snacks

Pink panda/snack owl.

I recently discovered a new brand called Pink Panda which offers high fiber fruit snacks. Why high fiber fruit snacks? Because fiber is such a hard micro nutrient to consume when you are traveling and I like that these snacks trade the sugar for fiber when it comes to carbohydrates in the snack. These come in two varieties: Astro Blasters and Treasure Chews. I’ve had both and think they taste yummy (you’d really never know there is no sugar in these)! And it’s only 90 calories for the entire bag.

If you are interested in trying out this new brand use our code “BREADANDBUTTERPANDA10” for 10% off if you order directly on their website . Pink Panda fruit snacks are also available on Amazon below.

Snack Owl Vegan Sour Gummy Candy – Gluten Free, Low Calorie Candy - Guilt Free & Delicious Healthy Gummy Snacks - (Sour Nova)

Smart Sweets

I’ve been eating SmartSweets for years! They are similar to the Pink Panda brand but I’m not really sure which I like more. These are also high fiber fruit snacks and I really enjoy them for traveling. My favorites to date have been the Sour Blast Buddies and the Peach Rings.

SmartSweets Low Sugar Variety Candy Pack, 1.8oz (8 Pack) - For Kids & Adults

Other Fruit Snacks

As you can tell I really love fruit snacks! My other favorites for travel and just as a general comfort item are Gushers and Fruit by the Foot. I also really like fruit leather and the “That’s It” brand is a great option for something healthy(ish) when it comes to fruit snacking.

Fruit Bars Snack Gift Box (20 Pack) - 100% Natural, Gluten-Free, Vegan Fruit Snacks Variety Pack

Honey Stinger Energy Chews

Honey Stinger Energy Chews is an organic candy that’s great to chew and eat before, during, or after activity (especially when flying if your ears ring at high altitudes). It has multiple carbohydrate sources including glucose, fructose, maltose, sucrose.

Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chew Variety Pack | 3 Pack each of Fruit Smoothie, Pomegranate Passionfruit and Cherry Blossom | Gluten Free & Caffeine Free | 9 Count (Pack of 1)

I discovered this candy while on vacation in Hawaii. I think the best way to describe these are somewhere between candy and a gummy since they are chewy. I like Mango as my favorite flavor. Amazon offers a variety box if you want to check these out.

Hi-Chew Assorted Combo with Two 3.5-oz Packs including Tropical and Original

Protein Snacks

Protein is always hard for me to get in even when I’m not traveling so I always like to bring some protein snacks with me just in case. These are really great to cure hangry when you need some  stabilizing energy.

Pepperoni Sticks

These are new to me but I started eating Pepperoni sticks last year as a quick snack when I was out doing errands. That makes them perfect for an easy travel snack! The two brands I’ve liked so far are Vermont and Applegate Naturals. To me the flavors of these taste the most neutral for dried meat and come in a casing so it’s easy to eat and move on to the next thing.

Snack Sticks by Vermont Smoke & Cure – Uncured Pepperoni – Turkey – Healthy Meat Protein – 1oz Jerky Sticks – 24 count carton

Protein Bars

Protein Bars can sometimes leave an aftertaste in my opinion so there are not too many tasty ones that have a balanced calorie to protein ratio. My favorite pick so far as been Barebells Protein Bars which come in a variety of flavors and have 20 grams of protein per bar. I’ve been able to find these on Amazon and at Trader Joe’s so far. If you don’t typically like protein bars give these a try for something a bit different.

Barebells Protein Bar - Salty Peanut

Protein Powders

I like to travel with protein powders that are individually wrapped since protein is often difficult to fit in when on the go. Most protein powder servings will have at least 18 grams of protein which is a great boost to hold you over until your next meal.

You can mix your protein powder in with some bottled water at the airport. As a great hack you can also find a bistro, Starbucks, or Dunkin Donuts in the airport and request a milk of your choice in a bigger cup to add your protein powder for an easy travel snack.

Clean Simple Eats Chocolate Brownie Batter Whey Protein Powder, Natural Sweetened and Cold-Processed 20 Grams of Protein (30 Servings)

Collagen Peptides

I’m also a big fan of collagen peptides! Collagen is not a complete protein but it works well in a pinch to supplement other sources of protein for the day. It’s not completely tasteless but the flavor isn’t too strong. I prefer to dissolve these packets in water or hot coffee while traveling. They come in individual sticks which make them easy to transport. Collagen is also really great for nail and hair growth and has really helped my joints.

Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Powder Supplement Travel Packs, Hydrolyzed Collagen for Skin Hair Nail Joint - Dairy & Gluten Free - 10g per Serving - Zero Sugar - Unflavored (20ct per Box)

Granola and Fruit Bars

Something about granola bars are so nostalgic to me and I love to bring them as an easy travel snack. They travel really well on planes and are also great for in your day bag at your final destination.

I like the Nature Valley, Made Good, and Nature Bakery brands.

Nature's Bakery Gluten Free Fig Bars, Raspberry, Real Fruit, Vegan, Non-GMO, Snack bar, 1 box with 6 twin packs (6 twin packs)

Peanut Butter

Again, a controversial pick for travel since usually peanuts are not allowed on all flights but I must have peanut butter with me as a basic comfort food while traveling! If I can’t have these on the plane I just eat them at my final destination. I like the JIF To Go Natural Peanut Butter cups that come individually packaged and will eat them as is, or with something I buy at the airport for some extra fat and protein. My second pick is the Justin’s Honey Peanut Butter brand which comes in a packet making it one of the best snacks for traveling.

JUSTIN'S Classic Gluten-Free Peanut Butter Spread Squeeze Packs, 1.15 Ounce (10 Pack)

Dehydration is real when you travel! I have two easy solutions to stay hydrated when you are on the go. These are not exactly an easy travel snack but they will come in handy while on the go.

I recently started using GoHydrate this spring as a way to stop my leg muscles from cramping and get my water levels up. GoHydrate is a water enhancer which makes it a great option if you are not particularly a fan of drinking water. I started thinking that this would also be excellent for travel due to the individual packets which make them great for on-the-go. GoHydrate provides almost instant hydration by delivering 5 electrolytes immediately to your body. Those electrolytes are: calcium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorous, and potassium.

This water enhancer also provides 40%+ of the recommended daily Vitamin D dose that most of of are deficient in due to sitting inside so often. To use GoHydrate just pour the pre-packaged stick into 20-24oz of water and drink. If you’d like to order GoHydrate I suggest ordering their mixed 10 stick sample box or their 30 stick sample box to see which flavor you like before stocking up on their 30 box sets of one flavor. My favorite flavors so far have been Lemon Citrus , Kiwi Strawberry , and Fruit Punch if you need a flavor recommendation.

True Honey Tea

We found this brand True Honey Tea at a farmers market last year and its been our favorite tea! Based in Virginia these are tea bags that have honey granules already in the tea. We really like the Earl Gray (add some half and half to make a London Fog) and also the Peppermint tea for a really great non perishable travel snack.

True Honey Rooibos Tea Bags - Honey Crystals Blended in Every Sachet - Decaf Red Rooibos Tea - All Natural Organic Herbal Caffeine Free Tea Bag 24 Count

My next favorite drink mixer to travel with is from Cusa Tea . This brand was recommended to me by a friend who uses them while hiking. The best part is you don’t have to walk around with a wet tea bag once you prepare your tea. The flavors Cusa Teas has are unreal. I started with their Iced or Hot Variety Pack and the flavors are so delicious, truly premium tea with no sugar or artificial ingredients. I’ve tried this both in iced and hot tea and they work great. You can use these just by ordering hot water while on at the airport, on the plane, or at your final travel destination.

If iced tea is more your style I’ve used them in even room temperature water (though cold water is better) and they dissolve no problem with no grainy stuff at the bottom. They are not sweetened so if you like sweet tea I suggest adding a sugar packet or something like Truvia to lightly sweeten the drink. My favorite flavors so far have been Blueberry Chrysanthemum and Hibiscus Rose . I recommend starting with the variety pack so that you can figure out which flavor you like before committing to an entire pack.

Cusa Tea & Coffee | Herbal Tea Variety Pack | Premium Caffeine Free Instant Tea | Hot & Iced Tea with No Added Sugar (10 Single Servings)

I typically buy a large water bottle once I get through security to keep with me in the airport and on the plane. If you don’t like buying water I suggest traveling with a stainless steel water bottle that you can fill up at the airport and throughout your trip. Our favorite travel options include Swell , Iron Flask, Yeti, and Stanley water bottles as great options that close.

6 Warm Winter Travel Destinations in the USA to Catch That Winter Sun

This post is perfect timing! We’re taking the family to Disney World in two weeks and I have “travel snacks” on my to-do list! I love the high fiber gummy options, my little one struggles while we travel, so these will be perfect! Oh, and I have both the Emerald Nut Packs and the Nature’s Bakery bars as my car snacks, they are perfect, so I never have to hit the drive-thru!

Disney World sounds so fun! Yes, any sort of extra fiber on a trip makes things so much easier for all of us. And in candy form even better. I hope you get to try them 🙂 -Monica

I often bring a small container (2-3 TBSP to 3.3 oz) of reconstituted PBfit (or other powdered peanut butter) with sugar snap peas or carrot sticks for a tasty healthy snack. Also bring small containers of the powdered peanut butter to mix with water later. Frozen grapes and frozen bean/veggie or egg and spinach wraps can be used to keep food cold and are healthy snacks when thawed.

Those are great ideas!

Nothing ruins the fun like leaks or warm refreshments, so picking out the right insulated cooler bag calls for some research. The best insulated cooler bags are durable, some level of leakproof, have a good temperature retention, and are comfortable to carry. We’ve done the research and even tested the top options to help you narrow down the selection and make sure you buy a winner.

A cute and roomy tote-style bag came out on top of our testing. But maybe you’re looking for a cooler you can float in the water, toss on your back, or cart around on wheels. We’ve tried those, too. We tested all of the picks below out in the real world or in our in-house lab. Either way, we’ve ensured the cooler is up to snuff and ready to stuff.

Best Overall

Hydro flask day escape cooler tote.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Insulation 4.8 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

It’s functional and fashionable.

The ice retention is variable depending on the weather.

We tested the Hydroflask Day Escape 26L in two different real-world scenarios, including in the hot southern sun and out on a boat trip . The 600D polyester exterior is durable and waterproof, and we really liked how they worked it into the cute tote design. The fact that it’s leakproof, easy to carry, spacious inside (one tester’s mom was loving the fact she could lay a veggie tray on the bottom with no issues), and stylish put it at the top of our list. There are no additional pockets or storage options, but the tote does have built-in loops and attachment capabilities so you can customize it with compatible extras as needed.

One qualm was that the temperature retention wasn’t consistent. Most of the ice had melted within 2.5 hours when the cooler was out in Tennessee during the height of summer, but it kept more ice intact and drinks cool in lower temperatures out on the water. That said, we’re confident it could do the job on a day trip. We flipped the bag upside down when it was fully loaded and gave it a shake, and we’re happy to report there was no leaking. Overall, the Day Escape’s performance is outstanding.

Best Budget

Tourit cooler backpack.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Insulation 3.8 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.8 /5
  • Durability 3.5 /5

Several built-in features and storage pockets make it a good bargain.

It disappointed us during our durability tests.

The Tourit 30-can Cooler Backpack holds more like 20 cans with ice, and we love it for its bang-for-your-buck price and lightweight, multi-feature design. In addition to the main compartment, you’ll have your pick of extra storage options, including two side mesh pockets, a spacious front lid zip pocket, and a slim strap pocket (great for holding a phone or cash). It presents like a regular backpack and is easy to lift and carry, making it perfect for picnics in city parks . The thick-lined insulated interior is also leakproof (but the backpack itself isn't) and can keep ice for up to 16 hours. The padded, adjustable straps are comfortable, but there is no chest strap, and wearing the backpack at full capacity for significant distances may not be ideal for some. Unfortunately, we also experienced heavy leaking through the zippers and cans denting in the interior after we tossed this cooler off a table a couple times. However, no other damage was present, and we think this backpack performs admirably in most everyday scenarios.

Best with Wheels

Arctic zone titan wheeled cooler.

What’s better than a big cooler with wheels? A big cooler with detachable wheels!

It isn’t leakproof.

We tested an unwheeled version of this cooler and liked it — but realized we’d love it with wheels. We’ve owned the wheel-less version of this cooler for two years and even trusted it to keep a baby’s milk cold during long 10-hour drives across the country and for chilled drinks at the beach in over 100-degree weather. We’re fans of the extra storage from the two front pockets and the two side mesh pockets that are big enough for magazines or books. A reflective radiant heat barrier and triple-layer Cold Block base will, quite impressively, keep ice for up to three days. At full capacity, this cooler can get heavy — luckily, the detachable trolley cart can transport up to 100 pounds (there’s also a padded shoulder strap) and features a telescopic handle. It’s worth noting that the capacity is listed as 60 cans, which actually breaks down into 10 cans in the front insulated pocket and 50 in the main compartment. Note that this is not a leakproof option and shouldn't be laid on its side or upside down.

The Details: 60 cans | 6.75 pounds | 14.25 x 6.75 x 19.5 inches | 3-day ice retention

Best Ice Retention

Yeti hopper flip.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Insulation 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

The temperature retention is top-notch, and it feels virtually indestructible.

The price is investment-level high.

This 12-can cooler lives up to the Yeti name and gave us impeccable ice and temperature retention. The cooler was tested multiple days at the beach , where it sat in the hot mid-80-degree sun for hours and still kept things notably cold. Cold cell insulation gives the cooler its superb ice retention and makes it perfect for use in hot weather or on overnight trips. Did we mention the heavy-duty, mildew-resistant over shell is not only durable but also blocks UV rays? If you’re hesitant about the single-compartment design, it does sport Yeti’s hitch-point grid that allows you to attach things to the exterior. Even when fully loaded with 12 cans and ice, the extra-thick shoulder strap made it feel like less of a haul, and you also have top and side handles as options. The durability of this totally leakproof cooler cannot be understated as we really put it to the test, from throwing it against rocks and floating it out in the salty ocean water to checking it in luggage. The price is hefty, but consider it an investment, because this baby will last.

Best for Picnics

Iron flask soft cooler.

  • Design 4.2 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

It has excellent temperature retention (even in high heat) and an impressively comfortable shoulder strap.

The rigid shape can feel bulky in certain situations.

We admittedly prefer using reusable ice packs in coolers but ended up being pleasantly surprised at the ice retention of this bag during testing. While visiting a park in 90-degree weather, we found minimal ice meltage, prompting us to use it for transporting delicate frozen items like ice cream on summer walks home from the grocery store (but the size and rigid shape felt bulky when browsing the aisles). This is an ideal size for beach hangs or tailgating or any situation where you can just transport it to a spot, plop it down, and then dig in.

It says it’s a 20-can cooler, but we easily fit 24 cans plus ice. We’ve found it’s large enough for storing food and drink for one to four people. After our toss test, there were a few scuffs that didn’t take much effort to remove. It comes with built-in cup holders on top and a bottle opener, and we couldn’t believe how comfortable the padded shoulder strap felt. It tipped over in the sun without leaking, likely thanks to the extra-tight zipper (it comes with zipper lube if needed). Our only pain point is the price, so we suggest taking advantage of any sales.

The Details: 12 liters | 3 pounds | 17.3 x 11.4 x 7.9 inches | Leakproof | 48-hour ice retention

Best for Water Activities

Rtic insulated soft cooler bag.

It’s a heavy-duty, ultra-insulated cooler with high durability.

It can feel cumbersome when full and carried on the shoulder for long periods.

If you’re looking to snag all the benefits of a hard-sided cooler with the flexibility that comes with a soft-side cooler, the RTIC Soft Pack should be your go-to — especially if you’re heading out on the water. The thick, heavy-duty nylon exterior is highly durable and escaped our toss tests and beatings with minor scuffs. Any sand, mud, or dirt easily just rinses off. Yes, the leakproof zippers are tight, but they kept the cooler leakproof during our upside-down shake test. A noticeably thick interior insulating layer excels at temperature retention — we left the cooler out in the summer sun for over two hours, and barely any ice melted, and the drinks were crisp and cool. Want to take this cooler in the water? Go for it without worrying about water leaking inside (or outside of the bag back in your car). One downside we should mention is that the cooler wasn’t as comfortable as we’d have liked with a heavy load and carried on the shoulder. We suggest two people carrying it via the tote handles when it’s packed full and not using it solo on any excursions with long walks.

The Details: 12, 20, 30, or 40 cans | 3 pounds for 20-can | 13.5 x 9.5 x 13.75 inches for 20-can | Leakproof | 24-hour ice retention

Hydro Flask Carry Out Soft Cooler

  • Maneuverability 4.7 /5

It has the perfect mix of portability and capacity for a day outing.

It’s currently only available in three colors, and one is a limited edition.

This 12-liter soft cooler was the perfect midsize we didn’t realize we desperately wanted for a day out at the beach with friends. It’s larger than a lunchbox cooler but still small enough to be manageable on an outing (and to fit in your suitcase). With nothing else, this ultra-portable cooler can carry around 12 cans. Since we were testing for temperature and ice retention, we filled it up with snacks for three: six cans, three sandwiches, a pack of string cheese, and a bag of ice — and it all fit easily and nice and cold as the cooler impressed us with its ability to retain about two-thirds of the ice after six hours at the beach in 80-degree weather. The padded strap kept it comfy on the shoulder, but we also found it easy to carry via the tote handles. Durability was not a problem, and wiping off the little bit of dirt from the exterior nylon material was painless. It’s even got a small stash pocket in the front, which we found perfect for hiding trash or holding keys. We're just left wishing it came in more than three colors.

The Details: 12 liters | 1.77 pounds | 9.95 x 14.5 x 12.7 inches | 24-hour ice retention

Best for Commuters

Carhartt 2-in-1 insulated cooler backpack.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Insulation 4.7 /5

It works for cooler and dry storage, and it can pass as a regular backpack.

Cooler space is limited.

This insulated cooler backpack works perfectly for day trips where you’ll want to store both dry and chilled items. Only the bag’s lower zippered compartment is insulated, giving you a dedicated space for storing dry items and items that need chilling. Although the bag claims to be able to hold 24 cans, we could only squeeze in 10 cans comfortably (with ice) in the lower insulated space. (Note: more cans can be stored in the main compartment, but it’s not insulated.) The 600-denier water-resistant canvas material was extra durable, surviving our toss tests with top scores, but it didn’t perform as well as we wanted during the leak test. We don’t recommend storing any electronics in the dry compartment when the bottom is filled with ice unless the bag stays upright at all times.

This backpack can easily be slung over your shoulders and won’t stick out as a cooler among other commuter bags — it’ll be your little secret. We think it’s a go-to bag for bringing lunch to work. Having the overall design of a regular backpack worked in our favor regarding features, too. There’s a front zippered organization pocket, two stretchy mesh side pockets, and two front slip pockets, making it felt more like a regular everyday backpack that just happens to have a cooler compartment than a cooler backpack. We also love how the bag’s extra padding made it very comfortable to wear, even when full.

The Details: 24 cans | 2.1 pounds | 12.5 x 8 x 17.5

Best Collapsible

Icemule pro cooler 23l.

  • Design 4.8 /5

This is a durable, comfortable, and functional cooler that will last — plus, it's easy to store when not in use.

There are no exterior pockets or storage compartments.

This collapsible cooler bag takes a cue from the dry-bag playbook with its convenient buckle roll top and waterproof welding seam design. We tested the large 23-liter size and could easily fill the bag to its 18-can capacity — with room to spare — and kept our beverages super cold. The top-loading design makes it a cinch to load, unload, and peek into the bag to suss out available room. When you’re not using the cooler, it conveniently flattens down for easy transport and storage. IceMule is known for its high-quality materials, and this bag held up against our durability tests, leading us to believe it’s in it for the long haul.

Packing food? The 18-inch height makes this bag great for stacking; just be sure any food is stored in sturdy, stackable plastic containers or boxes so nothing gets crushed. Overall, we found the weight was evenly distributed and the padded back and straps comfortable when wearing, but the chest strap does land at an awkward place for some people. Aside from the chest strap (which may depend on the wearer), we just wish this floatable, water-tight, and tough cooler bag had some exterior pockets.

The Details: 23 or 33 liters | 2.6 pounds for 23-liter | 14 x 11 x 18 inches for 23-liter | Leakproof | 24 hour-ice retention

These products were evaluated as part of two different cooler testing processes. All backpack-style coolers that made the list were tested in our very own in-house testing lab. Each bag underwent a line of rigorous testing, allowing us to gauge their performance side-by-side and see how they measured up when it came to capacity (both full of 12-ounce cans and then one-third filled with cans and two-thirds filled with ice, the recommended ratio for optimal cooling and ice retention), comfort while wearing, extra features such as storage pockets, durability, leakage, and ice retention. We packed the coolers full, strapped them on and walked around wearing them, and did a push test off of a table. After two hours, backpacks were placed on their side for five minutes and inspected for leakage.

Non-backpack coolers were tested out in the real world on multiple outings. Environments included grocery shopping, picnics, beach days, and festivals. Before taking off, we noted the overall quality and appearance of the coolers, including any extra features like storage compartments. Coolers were filled with beverages plus ice. After 2.5 hours, we recorded the ice retention and the temperature of the drinks. Durability was tested by tossing the cooler down the stairs (twice!) and slamming it on a hard floor surface before checking for any damage or wear.

We will continue testing these coolers over time, collecting insights for an additional six months and updating our picks and descriptions as necessary.

Tips for Buying an Insulated Cooler Bag

Carefully consider capacity and size needs.

Like lunch boxes , insulated cooler bags come in all shapes, sizes, and capacities. Think about what you’ll want to pack inside the cooler, now and in the future. Remember to factor ice or ice packs into your capacity needs (capacity is often advertised without ice included).

Anticipate the appropriate accessories for your needs

Consider your insulated cooler bag as an investment. Think of different ways you will need to use the insulated cooler bag down the line. Buying a bag that can be accessorized may prevent you from having to purchase a different bag in the future. Some common accessories include ice packs, carabiner clips, and extra storage pockets.

Plan on using ice packs instead of loose ice

Using molded ice packs is a water-friendly alternative to fresh ice. Ice packs can be reused and will avoid possible leakage as they defrost. Keep an eye out for coolers that are designed to use with specific ice packs or have room inside to fit an ice pack.

Consider what features you need

Coolers with comfortable and thoughtful carrying features — such as padded straps, adjustable straps, and multi-carry options — can make or break your experience with a cooler bag, especially as you get into larger capacity sizes. You should also think about the situations in which you envision using your cooler bag. Consider how and where you will want to access the contents of your cooler bag, whether you’ll have a solid flat surface to set it down on, and any portability needs you may have, and choose styles with the most beneficial shapes, materials, overall look, and access points for your needs.

The answer depends on your specific conditions and needs. Hard coolers are known for having better durability in rugged scenarios and providing longer ice retention than soft, insulated cooler bags. Hard coolers are best for lengthy trips like camping, while insulated cooler bags are better for portability and organization.

Finding a leakproof cooler bag is key for preventing spills and for temperature retention. Lower-end cooler bags are less likely to be equipped with water-tight, leakproof zippers and closures. If you’re concerned about leaks, make sure to pick cooler bags with explicitly leakproof closures and lining.

When using fresh ice, the minimum suggested amount of ice to use is a 50/50 split, though it truly depends on what’s inside and how and where you’ll be using the cooler. The higher the ratio of ice, the longer the cooler will retain cool temperatures. Some manufacturers advise filling the cooler with two-thirds ice and one-third contents.

When it comes to traveling with a cooler in your checked baggage, choosing the right cooler is crucial. You want a cooler that is sturdy, reliable, and appropriately sized for your needs. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a cooler for traveling:

  • Size: The size of your cooler will depend on the amount of food and drinks you plan to bring with you. Keep in mind that airlines have specific size and weight restrictions for checked baggage. Make sure your cooler fits within these guidelines to avoid any issues at the airport.
  • Insulation: Look for a cooler that offers excellent insulation properties. This will help keep your food and drinks cold for an extended period. Insulation is typically achieved through materials such as foam or vacuum-sealed walls. Choose a cooler with thick insulation to ensure optimal cooling capabilities.
  • Durability: Traveling can be rough on luggage, so it is essential to select a cooler that is durable and built to withstand the rigors of travel. Look for coolers made from sturdy materials such as rotomolded plastic or stainless steel. These materials are known for their durability and ability to withstand impacts.
  • Weight: Consider the weight of the cooler itself, as it will add to the overall weight of your checked baggage. Opt for a lightweight cooler that still offers sufficient insulation and durability. This will help you stay within the airline's weight limits and prevent you from incurring any additional fees.
  • Portability: A cooler that is easy to transport is essential when traveling. Look for a cooler with comfortable handles or straps that allow for easy carrying. Additionally, consider whether the cooler has wheels or other features that make it more portable, especially if you have a lot of luggage to carry.
  • Extra features: Some coolers come with additional features that can enhance your traveling experience. Look for coolers with built-in cup holders, bottle openers, or integrated cutting boards. These features can be convenient when you're on the go and don't want to pack extra accessories.
  • Security: Depending on your destination, you may want to consider a cooler with built-in security features. Some coolers offer options for adding locks or padlocks to prevent theft or unauthorized access. This is especially important when traveling to crowded places or when leaving your cooler unattended.
  • Price: Finally, consider your budget when choosing a cooler for traveling. Coolers come in a wide range of prices, so it's essential to find a balance between your needs and your budget. Remember that a good quality cooler is an investment that will last for multiple trips, so prioritize durability and functionality over price alone.

By considering these factors, you can choose the right cooler for traveling with confidence. A well-chosen cooler will ensure that your food and drinks stay fresh and cool during your journey, making your travel experience even more enjoyable.

Understanding the Importance of Checking UA Class of Travel for a Smooth Travel Experience

You may want to see also

When planning for a trip, one common dilemma is how to transport perishable items, such as food or drinks, in your checked baggage. While some may opt for insulated bags or containers, a cooler can provide an extra level of protection and temperature control for your items. However, it's important to pack your cooler correctly to ensure that it arrives at your destination intact and without any leaks. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to pack your cooler for checked baggage.

  • Choose the right cooler: Opt for a small cooler that fits your needs and complies with airline regulations for checked baggage. Hard-sided coolers tend to be more sturdy and offer better insulation, but soft-sided coolers are more lightweight and flexible, making them easier to fit into your luggage.
  • Clean and dry your cooler: Before packing your cooler, make sure it is clean and dry. Clean the cooler with warm soapy water and rinse it thoroughly. Then, air dry it completely to eliminate any lingering moisture that could cause mold or mildew.
  • Prepare your items: Wrap each perishable item, such as food or drinks, tightly in plastic wrap or sealable plastic bags. This step is essential to prevent any leaks or spills during transportation. Additionally, consider freezing some of your items, as they will act as ice packs and help maintain a lower temperature inside the cooler.
  • Layer your cooler: Start by placing a layer of frozen items or ice packs at the bottom of your cooler. Then, arrange your wrapped perishable items on top, making sure they are tightly packed and not moving around. Fill any remaining gaps with more ice packs or frozen items.
  • Insulate your cooler: To provide an additional layer of insulation, you can surround your packed items with towels or blankets. This will help maintain a stable temperature inside the cooler, especially during long flights or delays.
  • Secure the lid: Ensure that the lid of your cooler is tightly closed and cannot be easily opened during transit. Consider using zip ties or a luggage strap to provide extra security and prevent any accidental openings.
  • Label your cooler: It is crucial to label your cooler with your name, contact information, and any special handling instructions. This will help airport staff handle your cooler appropriately and avoid any mishandling or damage.
  • Pack your cooler in a luggage: Place your packed cooler in a sturdy piece of luggage, preferably a hard-sided suitcase. This will provide extra protection and prevent any excessive pressure or impact on the cooler during transit.
  • Check airline regulations: Before heading to the airport, make sure to check the specific rules and regulations regarding packing coolers in checked baggage. Some airlines may have restrictions on the type or size of coolers allowed, so it's essential to be aware of these guidelines to avoid any issues at the airport.
  • Arrive at the airport early: It's always recommended to arrive at the airport early when traveling with perishable items. This will give you enough time to go through security checks without any rush and ensure that your cooler is handled with care.

Remember that not all airlines allow coolers in checked baggage, so it's crucial to check with your specific airline before packing your cooler. Additionally, bear in mind that there may be restrictions on carrying certain types of perishable items, such as fresh produce or dairy products, so it's essential to familiarize yourself with these regulations as well.

By following these steps, you can safely transport your perishable items in a cooler in your checked baggage, ensuring that they arrive at your destination fresh and intact. Happy travels!

Wells Fargo and American Express: Exploring Their Partnership with Travelers Checks

Traveling with a cooler in your checked baggage can be a convenient and practical way to transport perishable items, such as food and beverages, during your trip. However, it is important to be aware of the rules and regulations set by airlines and transportation authorities to ensure a hassle-free travel experience. In this article, we will provide you with an overview of the key considerations and guidelines for traveling with a cooler in your checked baggage.

  • Check Airline Regulations: Before packing your cooler, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the specific rules and regulations of the airline you are traveling with. Each airline may have its own restrictions on the size, weight, and contents of coolers allowed in checked baggage. Visit the airline's website or contact their customer service to obtain accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Choose the Right Cooler: When selecting a cooler for travel, opt for one that is durable, leak-proof, and easy to transport. Hard-sided coolers made of plastic or metal are generally more suitable for checked baggage as they offer better protection to your items. Ensure that the cooler is clean and free from any residue or odor before packing it.
  • Optimal Packing: Before placing any items inside the cooler, line the bottom with ice packs or gel packs. These should be frozen solid before your journey. Make sure to pack your items tightly to prevent them from shifting during transit. Wrap any breakable items, such as glass containers, in bubble wrap or newspaper for added protection. Place additional ice packs or frozen beverages on top of your items.
  • Follow TSA Guidelines: While coolers are allowed in checked baggage, it is important to adhere to the guidelines set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). TSA regulations state that all coolers must be empty and free from ice or excess water when passing through security checkpoints. Therefore, make sure to remove any remaining ice or water from the cooler before checking it in.
  • Mark and Secure Your Cooler: To ensure the identification of your cooler and minimize the risk of damage or theft, it is recommended to mark your cooler with your name, address, and contact information. Additionally, use sturdy straps or locks to secure the cooler's lid tightly to prevent it from opening during transportation.
  • Know Your Limits: Check the weight and size limits for checked baggage imposed by your airline. Avoid overpacking your cooler, as it may exceed these limitations and incur additional fees. Be mindful that coolers filled with items can become quite heavy, so pack accordingly to avoid any inconvenience or excess charges.
  • Declare Perishable Items: If you are traveling internationally or to a destination that has restrictions on importing food items, it is essential to declare any perishable items you are carrying in your cooler to customs and border control officers upon arrival. Failure to declare such items may result in penalties or confiscation.

Remember to review and adhere to these guidelines before traveling with a cooler in your checked baggage. Following these rules will help ensure a smooth journey and keep your perishable items fresh and intact throughout your trip. Happy travels!

Exploring Australia: Traveling on a Student Visa

When traveling, especially on long trips, it can be difficult to keep your food fresh and safe to eat. One way to solve this problem is by using a cooler for your perishable items. However, if you're flying, you might wonder how you can bring a cooler with you in your checked baggage. Here are some tips for keeping food fresh in a checked cooler during your travels.

  • Choose the right cooler: Before packing your food, make sure you have a sturdy and well-insulated cooler. Look for one that is made from high-quality materials and has a reliable seal to keep the cold air inside. Additionally, consider the size of the cooler and ensure it fits within the size and weight restrictions of your airline's checked baggage policy.
  • Prepare your food properly: Start by freezing any perishable items that can be frozen, such as meat or pre-cooked meals. This will help keep them cold for a longer time. Next, pack your food in airtight containers or ziplock bags to prevent any leaks or spills. It's also a good idea to use ice packs or frozen water bottles instead of loose ice, as they won't create a mess when they melt.
  • Pack strategically: When packing your cooler, place the frozen items at the bottom. They will act as a natural ice pack and keep the rest of your food cold. Layer your food items on top, placing ice packs or frozen water bottles in between to maintain the temperature. Try to pack your cooler as tightly as possible to limit the amount of air circulation, which will help keep everything colder for longer.
  • Use padding: To prevent any potential damage to your food or cooler, use towels, clothes, or even crumpled newspaper to provide cushioning. This will protect your items from getting crushed or broken during transit.
  • Secure the lid properly: Double-check that the cooler's lid is tightly closed and secure before checking it in. Consider using additional straps or bungee cords to ensure the lid stays shut during handling and transportation.
  • Label your cooler: Attach a clear label or tag to your cooler with your name, phone number, and destination address. This will help you identify your cooler if it gets misplaced or lost during the journey.
  • Check the regulations: Before your trip, familiarize yourself with the airline's policies regarding coolers in checked baggage. Some airlines may have specific rules or restrictions, such as the type of cooler allowed or the maximum weight limit.
  • Arrive early and inform the airline: When checking in your cooler, arrive at the airport early to allow enough time for inspection and processing. Inform the airline staff that you have a cooler in your checked baggage so they can handle it appropriately.

Following these tips will help ensure that your food stays fresh and safe during your travels. By packing your perishable items in a well-insulated cooler and taking necessary precautions, you can enjoy your favorite homemade snacks or meals no matter where you're headed.

The drop-bottom compartment is accessed by a 180-degree zip opening, and the U-shaped main compartment has a large opening for easy packability. Frequently Asked Questions

The following brands offer quality luggage at an affordable price. These brands also offer savings promotions throughout the year:

  • Amazon Basics
  • American Tourister

The difference comes down to the cost of materials. For example, a hard-sided suitcase like The Carry-On by Away is more expensive because it's made of polycarbonate, a type of plastic that is virtually indestructible. Polycarbonate is more costly than materials like ABS, which is used in the Amazon Basics Hardside Carry-On .

Promising reviews: " I bought this backpack for work. It's the BEST backpack I've ever used. I needed one with several pockets and not too big or heavy. I found that with this backpack,  I can fill it and still have room! There's even a shoe and clothing compartment for traveling! The straps are just wide enough to stay on your shoulders, especially with the snap straps in front. I also love the color, and it's true to the picture color. If you're looking for lightweight with tons of pockets, this is what you need!" — Kelly Miller

"This is a perfect size backpack for traveling on a plane as your personal item, especially to international destinations. You could fit rolled-up clothes in here for another week , and it has a very handy shoe bag and tons of places for your electronics. This will be an excellent addition to my carry-on suitcase. Best purchase all year. I consider myself an expert on travel bags. I have way too many. It’s smaller than it looks but so roomy." — AP

Get it from Amazon for  $36.99  (available in three sizes and 26 colors/styles).

3. A  digital luggage scale  to help you pack the essentials without incurring any overweight bag fees. You won't be filled with dread when you head to the airport because you already know your bag is under the weight limit!

hand held luggage scale

Promising review: "Buy this if you travel a lot. I travel with scuba dive gear and this saved me from going over the weight limit both going to the island and returning. I was a hero with my friends. They had no idea how much their bags weighed. I helped them too from going over their weight limit. It's easy to use and worth the money." — Tinadiver

Get it from Amazon for $11.98  (available in six colors).

4. A travel wallet  for a sensible *and* stylish way to carry important documents so they don't take up space in your carry-on bag. Passport? Check. Boarding pass? Check. Credit cards? Check.

reviewer's orange travel wallet holding passport and other items

This RFID-blocking wallet has a passport pocket, boarding pass compartment, three credit card slots, an ID slot, a slim card pouch, a slim pocket, a ticket slot, a cellphone pouch, a zippered coin pocket, a key holder, and a pen holder.

Promising review: "This wallet is durable, chic, and spacious. The lining is very soft and feels expensive. From the design to the material to the zippers and snaps, it's well made. I ordered it in rose gold, and it's a beautiful color. I travel frequently and love the boarding pass pocket. I recommended it to my sister and mom, who also love theirs! They ordered in yellow and bronze and were also happy with the color." — Brianna graham

Get it from Amazon for $12.99+ (available in 31 colors).

5. A  set of packing cubes  you'll soon wonder how you ever traveled without. Your clothes will stay nicely folded (or rolled!) and you'll have more room in your suitcase. Expert packing level 🔓unlocked.

reviewer's clothes neatly organized in green packing cubes

Promising review: "I travel frequently and travel light. My luggage is usually limited to a backpack that slides under the airline seat. For a two-week European cruise, I added a carry-on rolling suitcase. I've used these packing cubes twice so far, and I am hooked. One cube holds everything (including clothing) I take on a three-night trip . The cube slides into my pack, saving massive amounts of room, and everything is easy to find during travel and at the hotel. Taking out one cube and unzipping is much better than digging through a pack! I will never leave home without these!" — Gura

Get a set of four from Amazon for $21.99 (available in 12 colors and as a set of eight).

6. Or some  vacuum storage bags  when you're a serial over-packer...or if you simply need to maximize luggage space. Place your items in the bag and suck out the air with the included travel pump. Who says you can't bring multiple outfit options on vacation?

A BuzzFeeder's bulky clothes in a sealed bag with text:

Former BuzzFeed Shopping writer  Jasmin Sandal says: "I swear by these bad boys not only for general storage purposes, but also if I know I'm going to be traveling for an extended period of time. As someone who tends to pack for every eventuality (who doesn't like to be prepared?!) I have learned that it's better to travel with them than without — especially since it's more or less a guarantee that my clothes are gonna take up a ~substantial~ amount of room in my suitcase. And if I can use something that's gonna shrink the size of my bulky hoodies and/or big tees in order for me to create more space, I'm sure as heck gonna do it. Plus, the satisfaction is indeed guaranteed because when you see those chunky layers flatten into a pancake...it's just *chef's kiss* ."

Promising review: "These are the best packing bags. We used them traveling across the country and... to save space in the suitcase! It's really easy to have the pump right inside the suitcase to flatten the bags when traveling for pleasure. I definitely recommend this for home or travel." — kit

Get a three-pack from Amazon for $32.98+ (available in four sizes and in larger multipacks).

7. A Kindle  for bookworms who keep up with their reading habit while on vacation. While packing a giant stack of *actual* books isn't exactly realistic, this compact and lightweight Kindle is a great alternative.

model outside using Kindle to read a book

It has a 300-ppi high-resolution display, an adjustable front light, and dark mode. The battery can last up to six weeks on a single charge and it offers 16 GB for storing thousands of books.

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Maitland Quitmeyer says: " I never thought I'd be an e-reader person, but living in a New York apartment with limited bookshelves changed my ways. I love love (love love love) my Kindle — especially for easily borrowing library books, squeezing in a few chapters on a subway ride, and of course traveling. I lit'rally read 10 times as much with a Kindle in my life."

Promising review: "I was so skeptical about switching from actual books to the Kindle but I have loved it!!! It’s so much more convenient to read and travels well. I’ve only had it like two weeks and have only charged it once (have read three books)!! Its battery life is amazing." — Haley

Get the newest 2022 version of the basic Kindle from Amazon for $99.99  (available in black and blue).

8. A slim and packable  Trtl neck pillow  that'll take up way less space than the round ones. You don't have to sacrifice your comfort just so there's one less annoying item to pack. Goodbye, sore necks and bulky pillows!

model wearing a gray trtl pillow while sleeping on a plane

The Trtl pillow is adjustable — you wrap the pillow around your neck and secure it with Velcro, and if you find it's too loose, just make it a bit tighter! I've truly never slept better on a plane than with this pillow.

Promising review : "WOW! Literally life changing; used it on my 11-hr flight to and from Norway to SF and I usually can never sleep on planes, but this did the trick! It’s also super packable and doesn’t take up too much space! " — Julie Cox

Get it from Amazon for  $60.99+ (available in five colors).

9. A  carry-on garment duffle bag  for keeping your fancy clothes free of wrinkles while saving room in your luggage for other stuff. If you're attending a formal event and can't bear the thought of ironing or steaming, this'll do the trick.

reviewer's black garment duffle bag hanging on a door handle

It's made of vegan leather and includes a 15" padded laptop sleeve, two additional pockets, an external zipped pocket, and a separate shoe compartment!

Promising review: "This garment bag is an exceptional value for the money. Well built, top quality materials, including 'beefy' zippers, should hold up well for airline travel. Minimal wrinkles if any in garments, and a cavernous bag for storing shoes and other items for a trip. Added bonus, it fits easily in the plane overhead storage , similar in size to a standard roller bag. I highly recommend this product." — Kindle Customer

Get it from Amazon for $57.45 (available in two colors).

10. An amazingly compact  travel stroller  if one of your major anxieties when packing revolves around your essential parenting items. This stroller is so dang portable *and* it can count as a carry-on item.

Reviewer's photo showing the folded stroller fitting the carryon size requirement for Southwest Airlines

The stroller is supposed to accommodate kids from 6 months up to 55 pounds (approx. 4 years old).

Promising review: "This stroller is great! So cool looking, too. I constantly have moms coming up to me asking where I got this! So easy to fold, so light, and barely takes any space in my trunk. We took it on a flight, and the flight attendants recognized the stroller and told me that I can just wheel the baby on and put the stroller in the overhead bin. I wish I had gotten this stroller with my oldest, but I was being cheap. This stroller is so worth the money. I regret not getting it sooner! But at least my youngest can enjoy it." — Nai Len

Get it from Amazon for $139.99+ (available in eight styles and four colors).

11. A set of TSA-approved  silicone travel bottles  so your toiletries are ready for flight in no time. This set also includes spray bottles and jars for storing other products, like lotions and perfumes.

reviewer's labeled bottles and jars placed in front of the zipper bag

These BPA-free bottles feature a leakproof design so you won't have to worry about messy spills. Each silicone bottle also has the capacity printed on it for TSA purposes! You get four bottles, four jars, and two spray bottles. It also comes with two scoopers to use with the jars, a funnel for transferring liquids, a clear travel bag, a set of labels, and a cleaning brush.

Promising review : " This little set is perfect for your travel toiletries. Instead of paying $3 for those little travel bottles, you can fill your favorite products in these. The taller tubes are silicone and easy to fill. For the circular containers, I used the little scooper to fill them. I didn't use the spray bottles this trip, but I did use everything else, and I'm happy to say nothing leaked. Easy to clean after use as well. " — Nicole

Get it from Amazon for $9.48+  (available in four colors).

12. Or a  waterproof toiletry bag  designed to hold tons of stuff — it has four compartments so you can pack all your travel-size items. There's also a handy hanging hook so you won't lose track of it!

the pink toiletry bag opened showing all compartments filled with items

Promising review: "I. Love. This. Bag. Seriously, I had a cheap toiletry bag from Target that essentially did the same thing, only way worse. It was too small; the hook didn't rotate so you could only hang it at an angle, if anything ever leaked; it would seep right through the bag, etc. But THIS bag has NONE of those issues! It fits everything I need and then some, meaning I don't have to skimp on my 10-step Korean skincare routine when I travel anymore. It never leaks. And I love that the hook swivels so you can hang it anywhere, and your stuff hangs perfectly. I also love the handle and the overall flatter shape. It makes it so easy to travel with! Cannot recommend this bag enough." — KaiEli

Get it from Amazon for $18.39+ (available in two sizes and 11 colors).

13. A  collapsible coffee cup  so you can get your fix without bringing your huge reusable cup from home. This is much easier to pack in your bag!

reviewer showing the pink collapsible coffee cup full expanded

It's also microwave-safe! Note that the 12-ounce size does not include a straw, but both the 16-ounce and 24-ounce sizes do.

Stojo  is a small biz founded by three New York dads who wanted a better way to get their convenient coffee fix without all the waste. Now they make stylish collapsible essentials in a variety of sizes and colors, including bottles and food storage containers.

If you buy to-go coffee – whether you're jet-setting or just grabbing a mid-day pick-me-up — this cup is a must-have . So long as you remember to bring it, it's all the convenience of to-go coffee with none of the waste. It's leakproof and, when you're all done, it collapses down teeny tiny and can be tossed back in your bag. Oh! And it comes with a straw, so all you iced coffee lovers can get in on the action, too."

Get it from Amazon for $19.95+ (available in four sizes and in 24 colors).

BuzzFeed Shopping writer Danielle Healy swears by this kit and said: "I, your resident forgetful person, bought the NYC skyline version of this at the start of COVID-19 to keep in my work tote. Unfortunately, I haven't touched my work tote in months because...*gestures at the world around*...but it's a really handy kit I know will save me a ton whenever I regularly leave the house again. Everything from Anne Cate is super high quality. The wallet on its own is adorable and could be used for a million different things."

17. A pocket-sized, refillable  travel perfume atomizer  because you should never have to travel without your go-to scent. It's easy to use and will take up hardly any space. Pump it on your full-size perfume bottle to fill up the atomizer!

atomizer pumping on a perfume bottle

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Elizabeth Lily says: "^ That's me pumping my signature perfume into one of these travel atomizers I've been using for about a year. As the reviewer down below mentions, it's great to just throw in your purse on the reg for a fragrance re-up throughout the day. As you can see, it's about the size of my thumb and therefore takes up very little room. Plus! It's smaller than most rollerball travel fragrances you can pick up. This first one is working so well, that I just have the other three in storage. But if this one bites the dust this summer during travels, I'll be OK about digging into my stores to use one of the remaining three...especially at this price point."

Promising review:  "I bought these due to traveling a lot for work and needing to cut down on the size of things in my carry-on bag for flying. I can bring four different perfumes now instead of one big one. They’re super easy to fill and haven’t leaked so far, but I keep them in a sandwich baggie while traveling just in case. I would 100% buy them again." — Emily

18. A  small jewelry case  with enough space for your daily wear items, like necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings. It's very compact so you can even carry it in your purse.

Promising review: "I travel a lot for work, and this jewelry box has everything I was looking for! It’s a nice small size and has plenty of storage for necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, and even a watch! Very good quality, and I love the color. Highly recommend!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️" — Morgan

Get it from Amazon for $24.99 (available in 10 colors).

19. A pack of  laundry soap sheets  if you just KNOW there's an outfit you'll want to wear multiple times during your trip. This also allows you to pack lighter since you'll be able to wash a few things, which leaves plenty of room for souvenirs!

reviewer's small orange container of laundry sheets

Promising review: "This came SO in handy during my vacation to Europe! I was making lots of different stops at places with different types of weather. With these laundry soap sheets I was able to wash my clothes in the sink — letting me pack just the right amount of clothes for all the different places I went." — Katie Fujarski

It's cruelty- and paraben-free and it's vegan. Plus, the packaging is recyclable!

Alleyoop is a woman-owned small biz that is focused on redefining beauty efficiency. Many of their products are compact and have multiple uses!

Former BuzzFeeder  Jasmin Sandal  loves this thing: "I didn't realize I'd ever use a makeup product in my twenties that had the ability to transport me back to something I used in sixth grade, but here we are; and here I am using a multitool pen...for my face. I gotta say, I love the concept of the Pen Pal from Alleyoop ! After using all of the functions (eyeliner, highlighter, lip liner, eyebrow pencil) and as someone who LOVES makeup but was applying as little as humanly possible during lockdown, I think it’s a great tool for anyone looking to streamline their routine. It's ideal to use for touch-ups come the end of the work day, or a subtle, minimalist way to apply makeup in the a.m. The brow pencil is particularly soft and pigmented, and filled in my eyebrows quickly. I just adore the ease of application of each product, and appreciate the universal, does-it-all-for-you concept. Plus, it saves me so much room in my already overflowing makeup bag!"

Promising review : "This is genius. I’ve been doing a lot of traveling and I like to keep my packing to a minimum. Not only is this convenient and travel friendly, but the color payoff is fantastic !" — Stefanie S.

reviewer's pink cube full of clothes sitting on the bed

It also has a zipper compartment at the bottom for your dirty clothes so they don't get mixed together and you end up just washing everything when you get home (bc that's usually what happens to me).

Promising review: "I just love it. I travel a lot. Now I don’t have to hang anything up but my organizer. I can see what I pack and where everything is. Just love it. I can fit easily seven days' worth of outfits and three pairs of shoes in a carry-on suitcase.  Just great." — Amazon Customer

Get it from Amazon for $34.99 (available in two sizes and six colors).

22. A genius  Toptote hat clip  because surely you don't want to stuff your precious hat in a suitcase where it'll get all deformed — and take up way too much space. This magnetic clip keeps your hat free of damage *and* prevents you from losing it.

model with hat clipped to their purse using Toptote clip

The magnetic clip securely attaches to your hat brim (damage-free) — just hook the gold hexagonal clip around the strap/holder of your choosing!

I’ve used it to carry multiple hats on my travels with no problem! Definitely a purchase well worth it!" — Adrianna

Promising review : "This is the best travel umbrella I’ve ever owned! It’s very easy to open and close one-handed with the push button. It’s very sturdy and fits nicely in a carry-on or backpack." — C.J.

Get it from Amazon for $20.95+  (available in four sizes and 41 colors).

24. A three-piece luggage set  so you always have *just* the right size suitcase for your next trip, which makes for an easier packing experience. It comes with a carry-on size, a small checked bag size, and a large checked bag size.

reviewer standing outside the airport next to three yellow rolling suitcases of varying sizes

These suitcases have TSA-approved locks, 360-degree wheels, interior mesh pockets, and telescoping handles.

Promising review: "My family travels internationally, which means lots of airplane transfers, rail, ferry loading and unloading. Each member has their own set. Only one cosmetic scuff has appeared. About to order another set for my mother as we are taking her to London, Scotland, and Ireland for the holidays. We rarely use the middle size. The small size we carry on, and the largest size we check. Very pleased with maneuvering and durability of wheels on various rough surfaces. The retractable handle makes for easy storage on ferries and railway. We’ve had zero issues with locking mechanism. We are a family of four with kids ages 8 and 12." — ChiefLaughALot

Promising review:  "You can totally fit three pairs of shoes in this! (Size 6.5 female shoe, fit heels, wedges, and sandals.) I bought two and will absolutely be buying more for my husband. 10/10 would recommend! I travel frequently, and I always overpack; this helped cut down space and stress immensely! " — Taylor

Get it from Amazon for $22.99  (available in nine colors/patterns).

26. A  packing checklist  to replace that feeling of panic with calm as you prepare for your next adventure. This will ensure you don't forget anything and it'll help you pack more strategically. You'll have a clear idea of what needs to fit in the suitcase as you go down the list.

Promising review: "So helpful! I travel a lot, and so does my husband, and this pad makes packing so much easier and stress-free. The list is quite extensive; while I probably will never need to pack all of it for one trip, it covers everything for a business trip or a pleasure trip. I don't worry about what I forgot to pack anymore. Use a pencil, erase it when done, and one sheet will last 3–4 trips." — Cktine

Get it from Amazon for $7  (available in three colors/styles).

27. A mini lightweight flat iron , which is truly the perfect size for traveling. Your hair will stay ~flawless~ and you won't lose a lot of luggage space.

Promising review:  "It does as it says it does, allowing my Dell XPS15 to operate a pair of USB devices from my lightning port! The laptop has two USB ports, one of which is always occupied by my USB mouse dongle and the other by my protected USB drive. If I wanted to plug in my phone to switch data or add another thumb drive to transfer a device, everything might have to be disconnected, but not anymore. It was really worth it." — Liberty

29. A fold-up duffel  when you know for a fact you'll be coming home with more than you originally packed. Pack your purse in your luggage on the way home and use this as your personal item instead!

The duffel in blue

It folds into a tiny pouch when not in use, is tear and water resistant, and even has a separate side pocket for shoes. There's also a side strap that slides easily over your roller luggage handle.

Promising review: "We bought this to take with us when we visited our daughter who is studying abroad for four months. We figured she would not have enough room in her luggage when it was time to come home. Folded up, this bag was so compact and lightweight, it took up almost no room in our own luggage for the trip over. Then, sure enough, she had a ton of clothes and shoes to send home with us and packed this bag full. We checked the bag and it made it through two international flights without a scratch. The BEST feature is the side strap that allows you to slide it over the handle of a rolling suitcase so you don't have to carry it. This is probably the most practical and the best-value item I have purchased in years. " — Tosa Mom
