The best rain boots have a sturdy rubber sole and some kind of waterproof—or at least, water-resistant—upper. We’ve included a few lace-up options here, too, but largely they should have as few seams as possible. This is not the time to bring out your Cuban heels or even your well-worn hiking boots . You’re looking for a barrier between your feet and the elements. Luckily, there are a whole bunch of rain boots in the market that’ll ward off any water—and we’ve gathered the best of the best below.

Best Statement-Making Rain Boots

Prada monolith duck boots.

travel rain boots mens

Every time Miuccia Prada deploys her signature nylon in a new and thoughtful way, we can’t help but tip our hats to her. Here, we’ve got it encasing the upper of these aptly named Monolith boots with a neoprene (another Prada regular) inset to keep things comfortable and waterproof. Are the hulking soles actually carved from stone as they appear? Based on their light weight, no. But they definitely provide a solid foundation.

Materials: Neoprene, nylon, and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Classic Rain Boots

Hunter original waterproof rain boot.

Hunter’s OG Wellington boots—aka “Wellies”—are about as iconic as it gets. They hold two Royal Warrants of Appointment from the British royal family, garnering greater renown for their protection from the elements throughout the decades. Whether you’re walking through mud at Glastonbury or tending to your garden back home, it just makes sense to have a pair (or two) waiting by the door.

Material: Vulcanised rubber with polyester lining.  Fit: Regular.  Height: Mid-calf. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Hybrid Rain Boots

Sorel metro ii waterproof chukka.

Materials: Waterproof leather suede and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Ankle. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Minimalist Rain Boots

Stutterheim chelsea winterwalker boot.

Stutterheim knows waterproof. If you see a minimalist rubberized cotton raincoat shedding water and oozing Swedishness, it’s probably from Stutterheim. The brand brings the same ethos of designing for “troubled water and dark skies” to its rubber Chelsea boots, which features thermo-fleece lining that will mold to your foot shape over time.

Materials: Rubber with thermo-fleece lining. Fit: Regular. Height: Ankle. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Thick-Sole Rain Boots

Off-white logo sponge rubber boot.

A solid base is a key attribute of a good rain boot. Off-White delivers a foundation and then some with these rubber boots that sit atop a beefy sole. You’ll also get some street cred with the brand’s signature zip tie hangin’ out in the back.

Materials: Rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Tactical Rain Boots

Palladium pampa travel lite waterproof boot.

Palladium started out manufacturing airplane tires in the 1920s, which means it can handle some slush and drizzle just fine. A lug sole, black-and-orange colorway, and toggle cord laces give these boots a tactical vibe. They can definitely withstand a good beating.

Materials: Recycled polyester and EVA rubber.  Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best High-Fashion Rain Boots

Bottega veneta puddle boot.

These Bottega Puddle boots made a big splash (sorry) when they debuted during Milan Fashion Week, ushering in an era of hulking stompers that we’re still wading through (again, sorry)—and with good reason! They are waterproof, feature a cool, curvy silhouette, and come in a bunch of excellent colors.

Materials: Rubber with cotton lining.  Fit: Regular. Height: Ankle. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Handcrafted Rain Boots

Diemme balbi suede rubber boot.

Taking a cue from duck styles, Diemme ups the ante and brings its performance-meets-craftsmanship approach to these Chelsea boots; each pair is handmade in the brand’s Italian workshop. Sure, there’s some damn rich suede up top, but they’re not getting anywhere near the ground, because of its lengthy and heavy-duty rubber soles. Rest assured, these guys are built to perform.

Materials: Rubber and suede.  Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Sole only.

Best Mud-Ready Rain Boots

Barbour bede rain boots.

Barbour’s footwear may not have ascended to the same seminal status as its waxed jacket, but the brand born in the British countryside knows how to keep things dry—feet included. Its Bede boots will get you through all kinds of muck and will make you look smart in the process.

Best Luxury Rain Boots

The row greta textured leather chelsea rain boots.

Sometimes the best kind of luxury is the one only you (and some eagle-eyed jawns enthusiasts) really know about. Take the Row’s Greta boots, for instance. They may look like a sturdy utilitarian pair, which they are, but they’re also constructed from impossibly supple textured leather set on top of a beefy Vibram sole. And the proportions are perfect. It imbues both fashion cred and function.

Materials: Leather and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Sole only.

Best Cult-Status Rain Boots

Suicoke alal rain boots.

The duck boot is ripe for riffing, and it makes sense cult Japanese brand Suicoke would step up to the plate: EVA rubber soles and technical materials are part of its ethos. This tonal black pair combines rubberized leather uppers with high-coverage lightweight soles capable of keeping you super dry and super fly through the rain.

Materials: Rubber and rubberized leather. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Duck Boots

L.l. bean 8” bean boot.

If your vibe skews to this side of the pond, then the classic duck boot may be your answer to Wellies. Possibly Maine’s most famous export next to lobster rolls, L.L. Bean’s Bean boots have a reputation for keeping water and cold out with a thick rubber boot bottom and a steel shank for comfort and support. They come in all kinds of iterations—lined, unlined, short, and tall—but we’re digging this chamois-lined version for chilly temps.

Materials: Rubber and leather.  Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Heavy-Duty Rain Boots

Nike acg zoom gaiadome gore-tex boot.

If your eyes widen at words like “heavy-duty” and “Gore-Tex”, these are your rain boots. Built with waterproof fabric and hefty lug soles, Nike’s ACG Zoom Gaiadome boots (even the name is tough as hell) are begging you to climb up a damp mountainside or at least complete your trekking fit. They’ve got all that Zoom Air cushioning for a soft landing, too.

Materials: Gore-Tex-coated canvas and rubber. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Yes.

Best Everyday Rain Boots

Blundstone #2058 all-terrain chelsea boot.

There’s a reason you’ll see almost every Brooklynite of a certain age shod in Blundstone—even when it’s bone-dry outside. They’re supremely functional, comfortable, and look best when you’ve put some miles on them. Also, the Vibram outsole and water-resistant leather upper will guarantee that you’ll make it across muddy roads and sidewalks without fuss.

Materials: Rubber and water-resistant leather. Fit: Regular. Height: Mid. Waterproof: Water-resistant.

Most Unique Rain Boots

Moncler aqua rain boot.

Moncler’s Aqua Rain Boots will not be categorized. The brand somehow created a hybrid sneaker, boot, and galosh with a few mountain bike chromosomes thrown in. Undulating foam uppers and waffly recycled rubber soles, along with a cozy lining, all add up to foot coverings that repel water.

15 Best Rain Boots for Men

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Take it from us: Having a solid pair of water-tested boots is a good investment. We understand that the traditional wellies aren’t going to land in your daily rotation unless you live in a place where it rains a lot ( London , Seattle , etc.), but the good news is that waterproof footwear now comes in a variety of styles and aesthetics. If you’re not a tall, rubber boot kind of guy, you can opt for any number of alternatives, from rugged hiking boots to sleek Chelsea boots —all of them totally waterproof. But regardless of which you choose, the convenience of having a pair of boots made to withstand wet conditions can’t be overstated, whether you’re at home or your next great tropical adventure. Here, our pick for the 15 best rain boots for men.

Our top picks:

  • Best budget-friendly boot: Hisea ankle rain boots
  • Best Chelsea boot: Hunter Original Refined waterproof Chelsea boots
  • Best for hiking: Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX
  • Best for extreme cold: Filson x Xtratuf 12" Insulated Elite noots
  • Best for snowy conditions: Swims Snow Runner waterproof boots

travel rain boots mens

Who says all rain boots have to be rubber? At first glance, you would never think these Chelsea boots could ever survive the rain. But the waterproof cow leather and the grippy Vibram soles make these boots tougher than you think, which means you could wear them anywhere, from the airport (easy-off for the TSA line) to a mild jungle hike. Sizes available : 6.5–13.5 (including half sizes) Notable features : Rubber upper, textile lining, padded insole, non-skid rubber outsole

travel rain boots mens

Our favorite thing about these Hunter boots is the sleek silhouette. They have the trappings of a classic pair of Chelsea boots, including the elastic gussets on the side. From afar you might never think that these were waterproof rubber boots. We think they’re the perfect shoes to wear when the weather app can’t be trusted to get the forecast right; they're the wear-everywhere rain boots of our (and your) dreams.

Sizes available : 8–12 Notable features : Rubber upper, quick-dry lining, padded insole

travel rain boots mens

Are these the most fashion-forward rain boots you’ll find on the market? Maybe! And it’s gonna cost you, too. But if you’re looking for tall, waterproof rubber boots that are sure to turn heads and add an avant-garde twist to your rainy day outfit, it’s these.  Sizes available : 6–12 Notable features : Made of rubber, cleated soles, neutral color options

travel rain boots mens

These waterproof Nubuck leather boots may not look like waterproof, rain-ready boots, but they are—and that’s exactly why we love them. There is a Gore-Tex waterproofing membrane on these boots that’ll keep you dry, but there is also a wear-everyday allure to them that means you can wear them wherever you're headed next, even if it’s not wet out.

Sizes available : 5–14.5 (including half sizes) Notable features : Leather upper, textile lining, rubber soles, removable, cushioned insole with arch support

travel rain boots mens

If the waterproof boots you’re looking for need to be more rugged in nature (say, if you’re heading on a hiking trip through the Costa Rican rainforest), go for these super comfortable, lightweight hiking boots from Hoka. These waterproof hikers are made with a combination of nubuck leather and recycled waterproof Gore-Tex materials to keep you dry. And the cushioned and sturdy soles are there to tackle all sorts of terrain, from the jet bridge to wherever your travels take you.

Sizes available : 7–15 (including half sizes) Notable features : Waterproof nubuck leather and Gore-Tex uppers, sugarcane EVA midsole, Vibram Megagrip outsole, comfortable sock liner, available in a variety of fun colors

travel rain boots mens

These traditional-looking mid-calf rain boots don’t just feature waterproof rubber, but Xtratuf’s proprietary compound is oil- and chemical-resistant, too. Plus, these have been tested to keep your feet warm down to -20 degrees. These are going to be great during tricky winter days after a snowstorm when ice turns to slush.

Sizes available : 7–13 Notable features : Rubber insulated with neoprene and lined with Airmesh for comfort and breathability, non-marking soles for excellent traction on a variety of surfaces

travel rain boots mens

The rugged looks of these pull-on boots combine the stability of a duck boot with the waterproof comfort of wellies. But, these also come with a ton of technical details that ensure warmth and dryness. For example, the boots are made with WeatherEdge waterproof fabric that will prevent moisture from getting into the boots. And each one has been insulated with 200 grams of ThermaFill to keep your feet toasty through the coldest days of winter. Sounds like the perfect après-ski boot to us.

Sizes available : 8–14 (including half sizes) Notable features : Mix of leather and rubber upper, rubber outsole

travel rain boots mens

If you want a class pair of waterproof boots that will channel the prevailing ’90s and Y2K trend-du-jour, then get yourself a pair of lace-up Timbs. The iconic work boot–style of these shoes will instantly give your outfit a streetwear-edge, but when it comes to protection from the elements, these are the real deal. Each pair has been put through hours of rigorous testing before they hit the shelves so you know that not a drop of moisture will penetrate its seam-sealed nubuck leather.

Sizes available : 8–14 (including half sizes) Notable features : Leather upper, grippy lug outsole, 400 grams of PrimaLoft insulation, comes in a variety of colors

travel rain boots mens

If you’re looking for a pair of heavy-duty waterproof hiking boots for winter, these are a great option to look into; Mammut describes them as “a shoe for hiking in snow and ice.” The boots have been outfitted with a fully waterproof PU membrane with bonded seams so that not a drop of moisture seeps in. (Actually, the combination of rubber used for the boot was made specifically for winter use.) And like any winter boot worth its salt, the Blackfin III’s inner shaft comes with aluminum insulation so you know you’re getting serious cold protection.

Sizes available : 8-14 (including half sizes) Notable features : Vibram sole, Aluminia thermal insulation, insulation down to -13 degrees

travel rain boots mens

These straightforward neoprene and rubber rain boots come with a bunch of technical details that make them a great value. Yes, the exterior is totally waterproof, but we love the addition of the adjustable drawstring closure up top that will keep mother nature’s finest (rain, snow, hail) from sneaking into the boots. And it’s lined with mesh, which will help keep your feet dry. Bonus: The combination of materials used can help modulate heat, too (up to 86 degrees), which means these are fantastic for year-round use. Sizes available : 6–14 Notable features : Anti-slip molded outsoles, mesh-lined, affordable

travel rain boots mens

Australia’s Ugg might be better known for cushy, warm fleece-lined boots , but the brand makes a whole collection of footwear that looks nothing like them. Case in point: The Biltmore Hiker though totally waterproof isn’t particularly all that rugged. But for rainy days in the city or for an afternoon shopping in an Alpine village? These seam-sealed leather boots with their contrasting laces are perfect.

Sizes available: 7–15 (including half sizes) Notable feature s: Leather upper, textile lining, rubber soles, comes in classic colors

travel rain boots mens

The sporty style of this pair turns the rain boot silhouette a little bit on its head. But all the protective details remain—and then some. The leather upper has been rubber-coated and then polished with the brand’s SpyDry waterproof member. It’s also been insulated with a PrimaLoft lining to keep you warm through most conditions. And the five-piece heel construction is meant to be very comfortable while offering incredible traction.

Sizes available : 8–13 (including half sizes) Notable features : Leather and neoprene upper, synthetic lining, rubber soles, insulated, zipper closure

travel rain boots mens

If you’re looking for super classic ankle-length rain boots, we love the whimsical vibe of these from Australia’s Tully. The boots are lined with neoprene for added stretch, and there’s arch support for ultimate comfort. There are some elevated style details, too, like the contrasting neoprene cuff around the upper part of the shaft and the chunkier sole with the subtle platform lift.

Sizes available : 4–11 Notable feature s: Rubber and neoprene upper, neoprene lining, vegan, comes in a variety of fun colors, unisex

travel rain boots mens

If you’re gonna go with the classic mid-calf rubber wellies, you might as well have fun with it. We love the patent sheen on these PVC boots, but we adore the contrasting yellow soles even more. These might be utilitarian in nature, but the vibes are whimsical enough to brighten up even the cloudiest of days.  Sizes available : 6.5–13.5 (including half sizes) Notable features : Rubber upper, textile lining, padded insole, non-skid rubber outsole, affordable

travel rain boots mens

If the waterproof boots you’re looking for need to survive winter conditions, too, then these Swims snow runners are the perfect upgrade to your cold-weather wardrobe . We love the moon-boot aesthetics, but they are incredibly lightweight so you won’t feel like you’ve fasted ski boots to your feet. Plus, even though there are layers of water protection here, they are made of breathable materials that will let moisture out.

Sizes available : 7–13 Notable features : Textile upper and lining, rubber outsoles, unisex, comes in a variety of colors

What is the Best Waterproof Boot?

While there are several great choices when it comes to a waterproof boot, what activity you will be using them for will come into play.

  • The Best Waterproof Boots for Women: Chaco Women’s Barbary – Versatility is key when picking out a waterproof boot. They are durable, comfortable, and with a wool and fleece lining, they will keep your feet warm as well as dry. Their style means you can wear them for a variety of occasions (although falling short of dressier ones).
  • The Best Waterproof Boots for Men: Rockport Rugged Bucks Chukka boot – once again, boots that you can adapt no matter the situation win out. These boots can be dressy or casual, all while keeping your feet warm and dry.
  • The Best Traditional Rain Boot: Hunter Original Tall – “Wellington boots” or “Wellies” as they are known in England may not be the best looking boots out there, but they are the most efficient. Available for men , women , and children , Hunters are the perfect footwear for all rainy, muddy terrains.
  • The Best Waterproof Hiking Boot: The Timberland Mt. Maddsen Hiking boots   – Comfortable, sturdy, and lightweight, these

What Should I Look for in a Waterproof Boot?

  • Outside Material – look for boots made with waterproof leather, nylon, or coated materials, as well as ones sturdy rubber sole. Liners with Gore-tex or other water resistant materials will add to the longevity of your boots as well.
  • Insulation – For colder months, you want to make sure your boots have proper insulation, like GoreTex or fleece. If you will be using your waterproof boots for hiking, you’ll want a breathable liner.
  • Design – Be sure to check the design of the boots, ensure that the seams are tight, the outsoles are sturdy, and the weight is light.
  • Style – The style of boots that you pick is dependent on the reason you want them. If you are looking for something to wear to work, a hiking boot is not the way to go, rather, you’ll want something like the Sorel Emelie that can be easily dressed up for a day at the office.

What is the Difference Between Waterproof and Water Resistant?

Waterproof boots will keep water out, and your feet dry no matter how wet they get. If you step in a giant puddle, your cozy sock covered foot will never know it. These boots are made with waterproof material, and all of the seams are sealed to be watertight. Water resistant boots, on the other hand, will keep your feet dry for the most part, but if you are in the wet weather for a longer period of time, or step in a puddle, the resistance wears off, and your feet will start to get damp.

What Waterproof Boot is Right for Me?

Picking the right waterproof boot may seem daunting, but when you narrow down what you need them for, you’ll be able to decide which is best for you. Some things to consider before buying:

  • Price – Will you be wearing these boots often, or just on a few rainy days throughout the year? If you tend to stay in when the weather gets wet, and will only need them occasionally when it is absolutely necessary to go out, it’s best to go with the budget rain boot pick.
  • Style – Consider what you will be using the boots for. If you need to wear heels inside, a simple rain boot will do the trick. However, if you don’t want the hassle of bringing along an extra pair of shoes, go with a dressier waterproof boot that you can keep on throughout the day.
  • Lifestyle – your lifestyle can play a lot into what boot you choose. Some people need every kind of waterproof boot: hiking, dress, snow, and rain because they are so active. Consider how much you are outside before making your decision.

How Long Do Waterproof Boots Last?

You are probably wondering how long a good pair of waterproof boots will last you, before you commit to making the investment on buying a pair. The short answer is, you really have no way of knowing how long they will last. How long you wear them, and for what purpose will play into how long they will last. If you are trudging through wet, muddy, rocky terrain on a regular basis, they won’t last you as long as wearing them occasionally in wet weather. If there is a particularly rainier month than usual, you will probably get more wear out of them, again, making them not last as long. No matter how long they last, if you know you will be walking outside in wet weather no matter what,  they are worth the investment, and your feet will thank you.

What Socks Should I Wear with My Waterproof Boots?

The good news is, since the boots are waterproof, you can pretty much wear whatever kind of socks you want. That being said, there are some socks that work better with boots, depending on the situation.  Here are our picks for the best socks for waterproof boots:

  • Darn Tough Micro Crew – perfect for hiking.
  • Bombas – perfect for the whole family : Women , Men and Kids .
  • Showers Pass Crosspoint Waterproof Wool Crew Socks – Add even more protection with waterproof socks!

The Best Rain Boots for Women and Men

A selection of rain boots, in different styles and colors, that we tested to find the best rain boots.

By Eve O'Neill

Unlined, unpretentious, and fully waterproof—few pieces of footwear reward joyful, mud-stomping impulses as much as a pair of great rain boots.

Over the past five years we’ve tested 31 styles and researched hundreds of rain boots. Whether you’re walking city sidewalks, wading through runoff, or just trying to stay upright on slippery subway tile, we have 7 recommendations—led by our top pick, the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot (in women’s and men’s sizes)—for standout designs that have withstood years of testing and abuse from the Wirecutter team.

The research

Who should get rain boots, our pick: xtratuf ankle deck boot, also-great duck boots: l.l.bean bean boots, also-great chelsea boot: merry people bobbi ankle rain boot, also-great calf-height boot: hunter original short rain boots, other good rain boots, how we picked and tested, the environmental impact of rain boots, the competition, what to look forward to.

A pair of fully waterproof shoes can be liberating. They let you move through the world unhindered, without any consideration for the mess around your feet.

Although they’re particularly useful if you live where wet weather is common, rain boots are practical for all types of places. They remain effective long after the drops stop falling, especially when you have mud in place of dirt, slush instead of snow, or slick subway platforms.

Rain boots are also great for doing chores outside the house, like taking out the trash or walking the dog, because they’re so easy to slide on at the door, then kick off on your way back in.

Rain boots are generally branded as either men’s or women’s, and we’ve kept this naming scheme to make it easier for people to find styles that match what they want to wear. But in the world of rainwear there’s little difference between boots labeled as “women’s” or “men’s,” so as long as the boot fits, any boot will work for anyone.

A pair of Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boots, our pick for the best rain boot, shown in grey with yellow pull loops at the ankles.

Xtratuf Men’s 6-Inch Ankle Deck Boot

The best overall rain boot.

With the most slip-resistant outsole of any boot we tested, these work best in a wet, watery mess. They’re also among the most comfortable for walking.

Xtratuf Women’s 6-Inch Ankle Deck Boot

20% off sitewide w/code WIRECUTTER20

Who this is for: People who want one pair of highly versatile outdoor shoes that are easy to slip on and off. These boots function foremost as rain boots, but they also make for a comfortable pair of three-season outdoor shoes that can manage outdoor walks, grip slippery metal like grates and train tracks, and remain easy to drive in.

Why it’s great: The Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot (in men’s and women’s sizes) is designed to keep its wearer upright on a wet fishing boat, but despite its utilitarian origins, it looks good enough for city wear. This boot has a versatile and comfortable shape as functional as the workwear it’s descended from, and it’s styled sort of like a Chuck Taylor.

Rubber doesn’t conform to a foot like leather does, so ankle-high, wide-mouthed, and round-toed are among the most functional styles of rain boots. They’re easier to walk and drive in because they don’t restrict calf movement. The wider foot opening makes the boot easy to slip on and off, and that’s what rain boots are all about: a quick transition between indoor and outdoor worlds. This design even has a kick tab—a tiny nub of rubber at the back of the shoe that lets you, yep, kick off your shoes when you come inside. Finally, the rounded toe is important; it’s the reason why these Xtratufs are more comfortable to walk in for extended periods than other boots. A narrow, tapered, inflexible toe box rubs against your toes.

In our traction tests, Xtratuf boots always outperform other models—and they should, as the flat-footed, soft rubber sole is built to cling to waterlogged boat decks. The tread on these boots is shallower than the tread on the Xtratuf Legacy boots, a former pick. That’s an advantage for anyone not using them to fish crab out of the northern Pacific, because tiny gravel and rocks won’t get stuck in the Ankle Deck Boot's tread (a small issue we found with the Legacy model).

The Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot is our recommendation for wet-weather bike commuting, too. In our tests these boots clung to slippery platform pedals better than anything we tried, though they allowed some unwanted movement since rain boots don’t hug the foot very well. (The perfect combination of flexible, waterproof, and not-horrible-looking bike footwear remains elusive.)

Side profile view of the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot, shown in grey.

After more than four years of use, Xtratuf’s Ankle Deck has proven itself the absolute best rain boot out there. Everybody comments on them, everyone wonders where I got them, I’ve even had a woman get off her bike in the middle of spin class and point to them, tossed in a pile with my workout bag, and ask where I got them.

They’ve replaced a number of other shoes I own, including almost every bad-weather shoe that had laces. I use them in spring for mud, summer for wet, and fall and early winter for snow, switching only to my winter boots when the snow starts piling up.

The slip-on, slip-off feature has been this boot’s biggest asset. This is my go-to choice for almost every single chore, walk, or errand I do.

Although the Ankle Deck Boot comes in men’s and women’s sizes, the fit and shape are similar. I typically wear a women’s size 9, but I own a men’s size 8 in the navy/red color of this shoe and have no problems with fit.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: One of the few downsides of the Xtratuf Ankle Deck Boot is that the styling is very casual. We do have a unisex pick, the Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot , that looks less like a tennis shoe and more like a plain boot. (Its grip isn’t as sticky, though, as that of the Xtratuf.)

Two pairs of the L.L.Bean Bean Boots, our pick for best duck boots for people who want a boot that does well in the mud.

L.L.Bean Men’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

For mixed terrain.

A duck boot laces tighter to your foot than a rubber boot, so it’s not as easy to slip on and off. However, it performs in both wet and muddy conditions.

travel rain boots mens

L.L.Bean Women’s Bean Boots (8-inch)

Who this is for: People who are less concerned about slipping a shoe on and off quickly, but more interested in a shoe that can take abuse in a variety of wet and muddy conditions. These are also the de facto “stylish boot” for men .

Why it’s great: Duck boots are a style of outdoor footwear pioneered by L.L.Bean . They feature the rubber soles and lower half of a rain boot along with a leather upper that laces tight like on a traditional boot. Our favorite duck boot is the 8-inch unlined Bean Boot for men and women . L.L.Bean is quick to point out that its design is the original duck boot , but that’s not why it’s our pick. If you want a shoe styled like a duck boot, you can find dozens of options. If you want a boot that’s one of the most thoughtfully designed pieces of gear for being outdoors, this is the boot to choose.

Outdoor professionals often say that you should never carry anything with you that can’t perform at least two different tasks (ideally three). This shoe handles three things well: comfortable walking, dealing with mud, and tolerating wet weather. Our other picks can handle all that stuff in varying degrees but typically have a single condition they perform best in. This shoe was designed to handle all three of those problems equally and simultaneously.

The laced leather around the calf is responsible for a lot of that functionality. The leather lets your ankle move freely for walking (and driving), while the laces hug it close to your leg so you can pull your foot out of sucking mud without leaving your boot behind.

The L.L.Bean Bean Boot, photographed from the side.

The bottom of the boot is cross-functional, too. It has a thicker heel than on most other boot types, so it will take longer to wear through, and the shallow, rounded tread is built for releasing debris; you can easily rinse it off, as well. And in the base of the shoe, these boots have a steel shank, a piece of metal in the sole that runs from the ball to the heel of the foot. This is a feature sometimes found in work boots, and it protects the foot from below and keeps the shoe from wearing out quickly.

The rubberized base of the boot shaft gives extra inches of waterproofing for walking through deep, curbside puddles, and the leather tongue is gusseted—attached on the inside of the boot on both sides—so the shoe remains waterproof for the entire height of the boot.

A close-up of the tongue and lace holes on the L.L.Bean Bean Boot.

Style-wise, it’s difficult to design a duck boot that laces flat, but this one does okay. Something about how the separate rubber and leather pieces are sewn together often creates funny leather protrusions around the eyelets and causes the tongue to bunch up. Every other duck boot we looked at failed to master the flat lacing. Even when the problem was small, as on the Eddie Bauer Hunt Pac , once we saw it we couldn’t unsee it.

It’s hard to overstate the popularity of these shoes. The biggest publications in the world have pondered that exact phenomenon, and Popular Mechanics neatly sums it up in the title of its article, “ The Never-Ending Greatness of L.L. Bean’s Boots .” The Atlantic does the same, explaining “ Why L.L. Bean’s Boots Keep Selling Out .” Current fashion trends aside, anyone who owns a pair will likely tell you it’s because the boots last for decades, and because they’re happy to be able to support a company that still makes its boots in the USA (in Maine).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The original Bean Boot is unlined, and we like that, since it keeps the shoe true to its nature as a multi-seasonal, versatile piece of outdoor kit. You can decide what kind of weather you want to use it in and choose the thickness of your socks accordingly. But if that’s not your thing, many other styles are available: You can get the boot flannel lined , shearling lined , Gore-Tex lined , or padded around the ankle .

The leather upper on this boot requires some breaking in, and so do the laces, which are coated and slippery to start out. But they do break in eventually.

Also, when you lace the upper tightly, sometimes it can create a sensation of your foot floating around slightly in the rubber bottom part. So depending on variables such as how your foot fits and how thick your socks are, you may experience a small amount of movement inside the boot, but we haven’t found the effect to be a nuisance.

Men’s widths: narrow B, medium D, wide EE

Men’s colors: tan/brown, basil/black/orange, tan/teal/orange

Women’s widths: narrow A, medium BB, wide D

Women’s colors: tan/brown, tan/navy, navy/light blue, teal/black/purple

Two pairs of the Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot, our pick for best chelsea rain boot that's unisex and stylishly simple.

Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot

Warmer boots.

This unisex boot is made with natural rubber and lined with neoprene, which adds warmth and comfort to the entire shoe.

Who this is for: If your feet get cold, the 4-millimeter neoprene lining on these boots will go a long way to keep your feet extra warm. These are also great if you want simple, everyday styling without downgrading to cheaper boots made with less durable materials.

Why it’s great: A basic unisex boot in a timeless shape, the Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot could be the only bad-weather boot you need. It has a natural rubber sole and an upper 4-millimeter of neoprene lining for added warmth and comfort, plus a subtle 1-inch heel and classic Chelsea boot styling that looks good on everyone.

The neoprene lining is the big differentiator between these and our other options, and it functions in multiple ways. Aside from keeping your foot insulated, and therefore a lot warmer than just a rubber shell, it also hugs the foot a little more, and lines the footbed, giving the whole shoe a much more snug, comfortable fit that only neoprene can.

The Merry People Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot, in green, shown from the side.

The ankle opening is narrower than other boots, which is almost always a dealbreaker, but because the neoprene is so stretchy you can still get your foot in and out fairly easily, and your ankle can flex while driving. And that elastic panel, the most recognizable feature of a Chelsea boot, is designed to keep out as much water as possible: The opening itself is quite small, which is important, and the neoprene is waterproof.

Aside from being made from inferior materials, cheaper boots in this style have universally bad design. They’re impossible to pull on, their toe boxes are narrow, and their elastic occupies such a huge space that they couldn’t keep a foot dry on a cloudless day in the desert. We had these problems with both the Sam Edelman Tinsley and the Asgard boot .

Flaws but not dealbreakers: These boots are very close to being our favorite boots because of how well all the design elements work together, but they don’t surpass our top pick in terms of traction and ease of use. The stickiest shoe is the Xtratuf, and that’s important, so we still recommend those as our top choice.

Sizes: Unisex sizes, the equivalent of women’s 5-14, and men’s 4-13

Colors: Alpine green, aqua blue, beetroot and pink, black, light brown and light blue, dark brown, pink, purple, grasshopper green, lavender, lime green, magenta, yellow, navy blue, rust, sky blue, slate gray

Two pairs of the Hunter Original Short Rain Boots, our pick for best rain boots that are high-end, well-made and fashionable.

Hunter Men’s Original Short Rain Boots

A high-quality taller boot.

Hunter boots have an iconic slim silhouette and style, so get them for that reason. But they also have the quality to back up their high price tag, and are easy to slide on and off.

travel rain boots mens

Hunter Women’s Original Short Rain Boots

Hunter boots have an iconic slim silhouette and style, so get them for that reason. But they also have the quality to back up their high price tag and are easy to slide on and off.

Who is this for: People who want to wear something well-made and fashionable. Hunter got its start producing footwear for the British army in World War I and World War II but is more known today as the creator of the de facto “stylish boot” for women.

Why it’s great: We think the men’s and women’s Hunter Original Short Rain Boots are the best choice for a high-end boot. Many readers have asked us if Hunters are worth the price, and we can confirm that the quality lines up with the higher premium. These boots are also more widely available than any other luxury option.

Everything about the design is thoughtful. First, the boot is built entirely of rubber. To reduce some of the weight of that rubber, Hunter removes small chunks of it from the inside of the heel. The tread pattern doesn’t trap debris, and it channels water away like a wet-weather tire, making these boots some of the stickiest in our traction tests. These are the only boots we looked at that had a fully sealed and finished upper rim, enclosing the lining underneath, and after five years of hard use that lining hasn’t peeled, and we haven’t noticed any other significant wear.

The Hunter Original Short Rain Boot in green, shown from the side.

We looked into testing other heritage brands such as Aigle and Le Chameau, but the inventory changed rapidly during our research period. For this reason we decided to pass on testing them for now, because we didn’t want to recommend something that would be hard to find later. However, if we get the chance we’ll give them a look.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Reviewers often mention that Hunters, specifically the tall boots, don’t fit their calves—and that’s why we’d choose the shorty version, which is short enough that this problem doesn’t crop up. The calf buckle is not functional, a surprise considering that every other feature has a purpose. One of our editors at Wirecutter who owns a pair says that although she loves the way her Hunters look, they’re very difficult for her to take off.

Also, the insole is flat-footed and one of the least comfortable we tried, and these boots—especially the tall boots —can be on the heavy side. These are not the boots to buy if you prize comfort above style.

Men’s sizes: 6 to 13

Men’s colors: black, dark olive, dark slate, hunter green, navy, docker grey, ruskea brown

Women’s colors: black, yellow, navy, black gloss, military red, blue stem, olive green, dark olive, black matte, navy matte, red gloss, rorbu rust, rough pink, faded rose, tawny, hunter green, skimming stone, matte red

If you need a boot for heavy muck and mud: Consider the Bogs Classic High for women and men . These easy-to-take-on-and-off neoprene and rubber boots have a glovelike fit and excel in muddy conditions. The sole of a good mud boot should do two things: prevent debris from getting stuck in the bottom, and release your foot from the mud. Unlike rain boots that have flat, squared-off soles, a mud boot often has a rounded sole, which breaks surface tension and releases your foot from sticky stuff. It sounds like a tiny difference, but it works. You also won’t see any narrow channels on the tread of the Bogs Classic; it can take hosing off and prevent detritus from getting stuck in the first place. The women’s version has cut-out handles to make them easier to slip off.

If you want a rain boot that’s more like an everyday shoe: Consider the Saltwater Sperry . They’re styled just like duck boots, so why wouldn’t you want the original Bean Boot? Well, Bean Boots don’t just look like workwear, they are workwear, so the leather is stiff, the laces are rugged, and overall they have a fit and finish that are unmistakably utilitarian. If what you want is something that looks like a duck boot but is a regular shoe for walking around town, we like the Saltwater for men and women . They have been waterproof on our feet for over a year and are extremely comfortable: The fleece lining makes them fit around the foot more like a shoe than a rain boot. Two caveats: we’re not sure how soon that lining will start to get ragged, and raw leather laces, like the type these come with, are notoriously easy to break. If we find any major quality issues we’ll update, but for now, we think you’ll be happy with this purchase.

If you want an under-$100 calf-height rain boot for women: There are a million possibilities, but we really like the Kelly and Molly boots from Joules (if you can find them). The Kelly was a pick for a long time, but the color options seem to have diminished. The Molly is the same model, but it comes in tons of different prints and patterns––which is fun, but hard to make a pick since everyone’s taste is different. Most boots in this price range are made of PVC, which is less flexible and less durable than rubber, but these are all-rubber boots (which is good for durability), with a well-fitting ankle and ergonomic calf. Meaning, they tend to fit wider calves but simultaneously don’t fwap against the back of your leg due to an overgenerous cut.

Seven pairs of different types of rain boots from the ones we tested, placed in a row outside on a patch of grass.

After five years of testing, our research list of boots is now more than 100 models long. We always consider online reviews, and we’ve consulted editorial sources such as Travel + Leisure ,  GearLab , Refinery29 , Esquire , and Outside Online .

A few things make for a bad rain boot. Leaks are an obvious dealbreaker, but beware styles that don’t fit your feet comfortably right out of the box, because rubber doesn’t stretch easily.

Aside from those two points, most rain boots fall somewhere on a spectrum of functionality, and there are things you can look for that will indicate what level of quality you’re getting.

In 2018, we interviewed D’Wayne Edwards , the founder of the Pensole Footwear Design Academy, and he had a few things to say about finding boots that last:

  • Look for boots that have a hearty seam seal between the sole and upper; this is one of the major features that make the boots waterproof. And “a really good rain boot is fully injected as one whole unit, which means that there is no room for water to seep in because there’s no seams, there’s no cement, there’s no separation of one in two pieces—it’s all one piece,” said Edwards. “Hunter does their boots that way.”
  • For increased durability, choose a boot made from latex or rubber. Lower-quality boots are often made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which can crack and warp over time and with use, though it’s often cheaper and lighter than rubber or latex.
  • A weighty boot is an indication of quality, because the maker has likely poured a thicker rubber to create it. “By making it thicker, it adds a bit more weight and body to it so it ultimately will last you a whole lot longer than if you had just the super-cheap, thin, polyurethane kind of a rain boot,” said Edwards.
  • In addition, Edwards said, “With some of the higher-quality boots you’ll find more of a traditional cloth lining on the inside.”

Later, we discovered in our own testing that ergonomics play a big role in what makes a rain boot wearable, and certain shapes and styles perform much better than others. For example, a boot with a rounded toe is much more comfortable to walk in than a boot with a narrow, tapered toe. Traction matters, too—on a regular sunny day, of course, but even more when it’s raining, because metal and wood surfaces become slick.

We skipped testing waterproof shoes, waterproof leather, and lined boots, because they’re slightly different kinds of shoes for slightly different purposes. We did include duck boots; although they have leather uppers, they're uniquely designed for wet weather.

In 2020 we added 14 models to our test pool and took them all out walking in torrential rains and wet weather.

We hit the streets and urban trails in:

  • Guerneville, California : In 2017, this Northern California town evacuated more than 3,000 people after severe flooding in January and February. We tested boots in those conditions, and again in 2019 during an even more extreme flooding event.
  • Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve : This temperate rainforest in California receives 55 inches of rain per year and offered us plenty of muddy trails.
  • Goat Rock Beach , California: Here we found lots of cold-water surf and wet, rocky coastline for traction testing.
  • Claremont, California: The locals of this Southern California college town have little tolerance for inclement weather, and the streets and drainage systems weren’t designed to take much precipitation. With those conditions, when drops hit the pavement, rain boots are a popular item among students.
  • Denver, Colorado: Here, urban commuters are as likely to find spring snow in the streets as they are to sweat through 80-degree days.
  • Mount Evans , Colorado: The slopes of this mountain, which rises over 14,000 feet in elevation, are a great place to find snow when city streets have already thawed.
  • Astoria, New York: The puddles on the sidewalks here rival the size of the potholes in the streets.
  • Ithaca, New York: As the saying goes, “Ithaca is indeed gorges”—which means it has plenty of hills and crags and waterfalls to explore, in addition to the lake at the center of it all.

One of the biggest conversations in the world of outdoor-gear design concerns the sustainability of neoprene. It requires petroleum to make, its production emits carbon dioxide, and it isn’t biodegradable. (Although plant-based materials have seen some advances, the solution hasn’t quite come into focus yet.)

But the other materials that boots are made of have their own environmental issues. PVC is recyclable (if you can find a place to recycle it), but it can release dioxins during manufacturing or disposal and is often made with phthalates, a group of potentially harmful chemicals that humans ingest by consuming food contained in household plastics or inhale by breathing in emissions from landfills. Rubber can be sourced in a destructive way . Finally, EVA foam is recyclable, but suitable collection facilities and infrastructure are rare.

If sustainability concerns you, the best advice we have to offer—after years of collective research on materials sustainability—is to wear your boots. Wear them for decades, beat them to death, keep them out of the landfill, and don’t replace them unless absolutely necessary. We take durability seriously when testing, exactly for this reason.

Former picks

The 15-inch Xtratuf Legacy Boot for men and women is an all-around great boot that we’d still recommend. It’s high quality, it’s flexible at the ankle, it offers super-sticky soles, and it has stood the test of time. But we found that tiny rocks and debris get wedged in the tread and require picking out by hand.

The Madewell Chelsea hasn’t had any durability issues in our testing, but it goes out of stock often, and we’ve come to love the higher build quality and warmth that the Merry People Bobbi has to offer.

The Kamik Lars , a calf-height rain boot for men, had some durability issues reported during long-term testing, with the sole slightly cracking from the shaft. We’ve retired this pick.

Crocs discontinued their AllCast (men’s) and Crocs Jaunt Shorty (women’s) rain boots, which were our picks for people who prefer lightweight boots.

Women’s boots

Many of the women’s boots we tried fit and performed well but couldn’t unseat our top picks for small reasons, such as styling, inferior materials, or small upticks in price. Those include the Bogs Amanda , the Kamik Jennifer , the UGG Sienna , and the Kamik Heidi .

The Everlane Chelsea is a top performer in every way, but lug-soled, toe-capped boots are a look. We also prefer the warmth and fit of the Merry People Bobbi. However, if you like the brand or the styling, this is a well-designed boot we think you’ll be happy with.

We have vetted the quality of the Hunter Women’s Original Tall  and think this is worth buying if you like the look of a tall boot. But this shape overall is simply less wearable than an ankle- or calf-height boot.

As one commenter mentioned, Original Muck Boot Company Chore boots are a favorite among winery and brewery staff and horseback riders. If you love them, get them. But we still think the handled shaft on the women’s-model Bogs boots is an inspired design touch.

We found the Joules Tall Welly Print easy to walk in, but it bunched unattractively at the ankle. Pebbles also became lodged in the outside, requiring hand removal.

L.L.Bean Wellies felt loose around the ankles and didn’t have very good traction.

Both Hunter Women’s Original Chelsea and Sam Edelman Tinsley boots had the same problem as many other rain boots styled like dress shoes. In our tests, we found the shape of the toe and ankle to be slightly restrictive and uncomfortable when walking for extended periods of time.

The Asgard Chelsea boot on Amazon is so popular it’s head-spinning, garnering an average of 4.5 stars with more than 15,000 reviews. Regardless, this is a PVC boot with a narrow toe box and a wide, unprotected elastic panel that can let in water. We can confidently say that we don’t recommend this boot in any way as a functional rain boot.

Men’s boots

As one commenter mentioned, Muck Boots are a favorite among winery and brewery workers and horseback riders. If you love the Chore Mid boots, get them, but we really like the rounded sole of the Bogs for heavy mud.

The Kamik Icebreaker is more like a winter boot, as it is heavy and hot. It performed similar to the Bogs pair in the mud and proved a decent alternative for half the price.

Our testers liked the comfort of Eddie Bauer Men’s Hunt Pac with a plush lining, but the lacing didn’t lie as flush as on the Bean Boot.

The Kamik Yukon 5 is waterproof, but it rubbed our testers at the ankle.

Our male testers found the style of the Hunter Men’s Original Tall boot too feminine (despite the boots’ history as a men’s military and hunting shoe), but it performed among the best in the mud and landed in the midrange on traction tests. If you are into it, get it.

The Hunter Men’s Original Chelsea has the same issues as the women’s Chelsea from Hunter. The shape of the toe and ankle on this model was restrictive, and walking became uncomfortable for our testers. And unlike on the short and tall Hunter boots, the top of the shaft on the Chelsea is unfinished.

Every spring we’re inundated with new boot styles, so we always have something new to consider. As of now, most of the new options are riffs on Chelseas or calf-height boots, and we are always looking for options that are affordable, made durably, and keep water out. If and when we find one that could possibly be a contender for this guide, we’ll call it in.

When the rain really starts coming down, you'll be glad you copped a pair of men's rain boots...or completely bummed you didn't. Your sneakers aren't going to save you from dreaded wet sock. As the weather gets more volatile every year , checking the forecast is about as good as asking a Magic 8-Ball if it's going to rain ("without a doubt" sounds sarcastic any way you read it). However the weather shakes out, it's best to just be prepared, with a raincoat , an umbrella , and certainly a pair of proper waterproof boots.

Rain boots carry an incredible amount of responsibility. Obviously, they should defend your feet from the rain (or they're not actually rain boots and you should check out the return policy for false advertisement). But rain boots should also keep your feet from slipping and come with a grippy outsole. Think about it: what good is all that waterproofing if you end up falling on your ass? Not only that, they should also work well through mud, slush, and perhaps even snow, answering the high calling of a winter boot . It's truly a lot to ask of one pair of shoes.

We're happy to report that there are plenty of choice waterproof shoes on the market that will keep the rain out and look great doing it. So, right now, while you're all dry and cozy, check out all of the best men's rain boots to keep you looking fly and drip-dry, from the best sellers to the It Boots of Instagram to the under-the-radar stompers and beyond.

The Best Heavy-Duty Rain Boot

travel rain boots mens

Xtratuf 15" legacy boot

Xtratuf cut its teeth in the harsh climate of Alaska, earning a reputation for keeping toes bone dry in the face of slushy ship decks and snowy trails. The brand's 15" legacy boots feature an outsole with unmatched traction, breathable interior lining, and rubber exterior that is completely watertight. Though Xtratuf's ankle deck boots are perhaps more popular, we favor the mid-calf version for its extra coverage and style.

The Best High Fashion Flex Rain Boot

Bottega Veneta

Puddle Rubber Boots

It doesn't matter if you're subscribed to every menswear newsletter on the web or if get your fashion fix via an occasional scroll: you've definitely come across Bottega Veneta's Puddle boots. Would we call them essential ? No. But if you're looking for designer rain boots, indulging your whims will spark may more joy than just settling for the same pair everyone else has.

The Best Extremely East Coast Rain Boot

travel rain boots mens

8" Bean Boot

The archetypal duck boot was born over a century ago and has held its reputation as a go-to waterproof boot ever since. It's unmistakable rubber toe and outsole give the shoe its signature watertight properties while the gusseted leather portion keeps moisture and debris out. They're also mad comfortable thanks to the built-in steel shank within the insole, which provides arch support for all-day wear.

The Best Rain Boot for the British Countryside

travel rain boots mens

Original Tall Rain Boot

Hunter is a day-one rubber boot manufacturer dating all the way back to the mid-1800s, when vulcanized rubber first came on the market. In the 1950s, after several decades of supplying waterproof boots to civilians as well as the British army, the iconic Original Boot (aka Wellington, aka Wellies) was born. They're embraced by everyone from British royalty to everyday gardners and are a wardrobe staple. The Original Boot looks great in its natural habitat with chinos and a waxed jacket, but a track record of high-end collabs with brands like Stella McCartney and Saint Laurent, can easily be worked into your more capital-F fits.

The Best Budget Rain Boot

travel rain boots mens

Totes Cirrus ankle rubber rain boot

If you're not a fan of the cinder block-like feeling of most rain boots, the Totes Cirrus sheds some weight while shedding sheets of rain. They're thinner and a lot lighter than most other options. Because of that, they're super flexible and can even collapse, should you need to pack them in your suitcase for your flight to Seattle.

The Best Rain Boot for City Slickers

travel rain boots mens

6" Premium Waterproof Boot

If you want sturdy, waterproof boots that aren't full-on rubber rain boots, this is your move. Timberland's premium seam-sealed waterproof boot gives off classic work boot energy without any of the stiffness of a rubber rain boot. Their classic workwear style pairs well with just about anything, too, whether you're gettin' work done in double-knee carpenter pants or putting on some nice trousers for a date.

What sets rain boots apart from most other winter boots is the combination of waterproof materials and watertight construction. Most of the best rain boots for men are built from one or two main sections that are sealed together instead of stitched. Many options have a high ankle to stay above puddle height. While you’ll predominantly find pull-on designs, there are some laced models that have gusseted tongues to keep out water. With so many great options available, the best rain boots for men are something every guy should have on hand. If you live in a city and walk pretty much everywhere, stylish waterproof footwear is an absolute necessity. Even if you live in the burbs and drive most of the time, your footwear game could still use some weatherproofing. As for anyone living in more rural areas, you know full well how important it is to keep your feet dry in unpaved terrain. Whether you’re exploring nature or heading to the office, it’s better to be safe than soggy. We highly recommend investing in one of the best rain boots for men listed below.

Hunter is synonymous with rain boots. The high ankle slip-ons, often referred to as "wellies," are made from a solid piece of 100% rubber. Originally developed for famers, the British company became fashionable in the '80s. A new silhouette with a toe cap, reinforced ankle, and flex point at the mid foot, is even sleeker than ever.

Our Deputy Editor for Commerce Christian Gollayan has been wearing Hunter rain boots for years and swears by them. He wears them to the office, to parties, and just to grab a cup of coffee on rainy days. The solid matte black color is so easy to style with everything.

When styling the Hunter Original, think of it like a black Chelsea boot. A smooth toe in an all black finish that looks great with jeans, chinos, or dress pants. If you wear khakis and denim often, go with the navy blue color.

Relatively new on the fashion radar, Xtratuf has been a go-to clothing brand for fishermen and boat crews for a long time. The traction, flexibility, and waterproofing are all top notch. Even though the 6" ankle is low for a rain boot, the elastic cuff keeps moisture out. It also allows your foot to breathe better than a high ankle boot.

If you're dealing with constantly wet surfaces, like a boat or slick city streets, these are great shoes to have on hand. The unique outsole design provides exception grip, even on the wettest conditions. Plus, these are so light and flexible that you can wear them all the time.

The flat sole and low ankle provide a sneaker look. That means they can be styled like a sneaker. The elastic cuff allows you to tuck your pant leg in to keep the water out. Wear them with a straight or wider fit pant for a more casual look.

At this point, the Bean Boot may be the most famous item that L.L. Bean makes. What is less well know is that the legendary Main Hunting Shoes come in a few different ankle heights. If keep your feet dry is the priority, then level up with the 10" ankle. Those two additional inches will make a noticeable difference.

The real secret to keeping the Maine Hunting Shoes waterproof is a signature triple stitch connecting the solid rubber bottom to the leather upper. Not only does this provide a water tight seal, it allows you to resole the boot. L.L. Bean will do this for you by putting a whole new rubber bottom onto the leather upper.

Originally designed for tackling the great outdoors, the Bean Boot has since become a fashion icon. You can wear these rain boots with anything, from canvas work pants to your best fitting jeans . Our style editors can attest that you can wear this to just about any casual function.

Most Blundstones are great rain boots, but the #1320 is a gorgeous color design made exclusively for Huckberry. A two-tone tan sole on a nut brown upper will match just about everything in your closet. All of the Australian boot maker's weather proof features are on full display, including waterproof leather uppers and slip resistant traction outsole.

Blundstones boots are so popular because of their superb comfort and style. What doesn't get enough credit is how easy these boots are to maintain. The treated leather uppers just wipe clean of dirt and dust with a wet towel. No need for polishes or creams, easy as can be.

Our style editors are fans of Bludstone rain boots across the board. If you're looking for a comfortable, easy to wear, and easier to style every day boot, look no further. We tend to favor the darker colors, but this Huckberry exclusive might be the best looking pair we've come across.

Slip-on Crocs are as comfortable as they are functional, but they are not great in the cold rain. Fortunately, Crocs makes a rain boot to deal with that. The look is very similar to the brand's signature sandals, but with a high ankle and and all the holes filled in. You've got the same super grippy outsole to handle any slippery surface.

Sticking closely to the original Crocs look that has made the brand so popular means that you can style these boots in much the same way. Wear them for a casual look that places comfort fist and foremost. Of course, you can't use any jibbitz on these Crocs.

These are great rain boots for anyone who has to work in wet conditions. Crocs' proprietary Croslite material is light, flexible, and supportive. It will keep you comfortable on your feet for long stretches

When the weather is wet but also warm, you want something light and breathable. The Digger Slip On Shoe is an ankle rain boot that wears like a sneaker. It is water tight up to your ankle, so you won't have to fear any puddles. A super grippy outsole design will keep you sure footed on slippery surfaces.

The side gussets are super stretchy so you can slide your feet right in and out, with a pull tab to help you put them on. Since the upper is not only water proof but super durable, these are great work shoes for all manner of yard work and outdoors chores. A moisture-wicking design also prevents sweaty feet.

We like how you can style these like a pair of slip on sneakers. Rock them with jeans or chinos like you would your go-to sneakers. They also work great with shorts for the summer time.

All duck boots are optimized for the rain, but these duck boots from All-Weather are optimized for comfort as well. From the padded ankle to the sneaker-style outsole, these rain boots will keep you light on your toes. The high gusset and waterproof materials will keep you dry on your toes as well.

These boots are built for outdoors adventures with strong grip, high ankle support, and a shock-absorbing midsole. All these features come in handy for traversing the city as well. Pretty much anywhere there is rain, you'll be happy to have these rain boots on your feet.

Our style editors like how sporty these duck boots are. Where most options lean towards hunting boots, these are closer to a hiking boot . That means that they stye well with more casual everyday apparel like chinos, wool sweaters , and hoodies .

Classified as a snow boot , but really more of an all-weather boot, the Lawrence from Kamik is rugged and comfortable. It is a duck boot with a high ankle and triple stitch welt. On the inside, there is a cushioned EVA insole and a thermal fleece lining. This Canadian made boot can handle everything the winters up north have to offer.

The lining on this boot is warm but not bulky, so it has a sleek silhouette. There is a tactical look to the all black color design and tough outsole. It looks good with dressier clothes like slacks and a blazer, or even a full suit. You can always wear them to the office and change into a pair of loafers as well.

Part boot, part sneaker , the Explorer Next Boot from Sorel is a weather resistant casual shoe . The flat and flexible sole provides easy movement. An insulated high ankle will keep you dry and warm all winter long. We love the super grippy outsole that will keep you moving in the wettest conditions.

As weird as it sounds, we like this rain boot because it doesn't look like a rain boot. All the features that define a rain boot are there. A high gusseted tongue and sealed welt will keep you nice and dry. There is ample insulation to boot. Yet, when you have a pair of pants pulled over the top, the Explorer Next Boot looks more like a fashionable high top sneaker.

We think you can rock these all winter long as a stylish pair of shoes that goes with jeans or chinos. If you ever get stuck in the rain or snow, you're covered.

Not just a sneaker company, SeaVees makes some great boots too. The Marshall Boot is an all rubber take on a military boot that is built to handle the wettest of conditions. A high ankle, gusseted tongue, and deep treaded outsole will keep you dry and sure footed. A soft 100% recycled polyester fleece lining adds some comfort and insulation.

For an extra styling flare, SeaVees provides a two laced option for these rain boots. Thick leather laces provide a more rugged look, similar to what you find with work boots . The other option is a recycled polyester in orange that provides a little flashier look.

In fitting with with the California footwear brand's coastal aesthetic, the Marshall Boot goes well with denim and chinos. Style it with flannel shirts, chambrays, and your favorite broken-in tees. Go with a rain parka or a nice warm peacoat when the temperature drops.

line break

Material: Leather is by far the most preferred material for boots overall, but when it comes to rain boots, you want some rubber or synthetic materials involved. Synthetic rubbers and similar compounds can be molded into shapes that minimize seams and openings in the boot. These materials are 100% waterproof so without any openings, there is nowhere for water to get in.

Seam Construction: This is how each part of the boot is attached. Many rain boots minimize seams all together by using one or two pieces per boot. If there are seams, look for taped seams. That means a piece of tape covers the seam stitching on the inside, making it water tight.

Welt: The welt is how and where the upper part of the boot is attached to the sole, running around the entire exterior at the base of your foot. This is by far the most vulnerable part of the boot to moisture. If the connection is not water tight, then your foot will get wet. That's why many rain boots either have the sole and upper as one solid piece of material, or the two parts are sealed together with glue. Even the best sewn welts, like a 360 Goodyear welt, are vulnerable to moisture over time.

Insulation: If you're planning to wear rain boots all year, another factor is insulation. A thick boot will leave your feet sweating in the summer, while a thinner option in the fall may have you pulling out your winter boots a little early. Luckily, rain boots come insulated or non-insulated. Insulated boots will keep you warm in cold weather, but mind the weight—it'll also make the shoe heavier. Meanwhile, lighter, non-insulated alternatives may suit you better in warmer weather.

Tongue Gusset: A gusseted tongue is when the full or partial length of the tongue is attached to the upper of the boot. Tongue Gussets are a part of the tongue, meaning that it is all one piece of material, which folds over and tucks in when the boot is tied. This is an important feature to look for because it creates a solid barrier that prevents moisture and dirt from getting into your boot.

The Best Men’s Rain Boots on Amazon, According to Hyperenthusiastic Reviewers

Low section of farmer walking in field

Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice , in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here .)

And while we’ve written about lots of rain gear — including the best umbrellas , the best women’s raincoats , and the best stylish rain boots — here, we’ve rounded up the best men’s rain boots, as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon.

Best-rated men’s rain boot

Timberland Men's White Ledge Mid Waterproof Ankle Boot

“These boots excel in all the areas were it counts,” writes one happy customer, especially when it comes to waterproofing. “Timberland hikers in black and ‘definitely’ waterproof as these have always been my husband’s favorites,” another reviewer writes, adding, “He wore them the entire snowy winter through ice, sleet, rain and everything without any leaks.” Another says, “The first day I wore them, it had rained somewhat recently and there was mud everywhere.” They continue, “We reached a sort-of washed out part of a trail and had to hike through a marshy creek bed, and at one point my foot sunk into mud up to my ankle. When I got home and took these off, there was absolutely no sign of mud or creek water in them.” One even attests that they, “Walked well over 30 miles in cities, through fields and on beaches, all while it was raining…Never got a blister, had sore feet, or had damp socks once.” In addition to being waterproof, users praise these boots for being comfortable from first wear with one saying, “These boots fit perfectly, were true to size, and required absolutely no break-in time.”

Best-rated (less expensive) men’s rain boot

Tingley Economy Kneed Boot for Agriculture, 15-Inch

“Why pay more?” one reviewer asks, explaining, “If you don’t need safety toe, and you just want to keep your feet dry, these are great.” Dozens of reviewers agree that for simple tasks, these rain boots get the job done. “I worked for two hours cleaning pavers with a high pressure machine and my feet stayed dry,” one writes, adding, “The lug sole makes for a secure, stable platform to work from.” Another says, “I bought these boots for walking around in ankle deep water for work, and for the most part they are great,” adding, “They fit my feet very well, and are great at keeping me dry.” One reviewer likes these so much they can’t wait for the weather to get bad. “I like it when it rains,” they explain. “I get to wear these boots.”

Best men’s rain boot for everyday wear

Timberland Men's Flume Waterproof Boot

“These shoes will put your podiatrist out of work,” according to one reviewer, who echoes many reviewers’ pleasure with the comfort of these boots. “I wear these for 10-12 hours a day on concrete floors, 6 days a week, and do not hurt at the end of the day,” one writes. Another says, “These fit just like I expected: very comfortable, warm, and waterproof which is essential for me.” One reviewer says, “I bought this boot to walk a pitbull who walks 5-7 miles almost every day.” And they add, “Nothing but the most extreme weather stops her 2 to 3 walks every day. That is why I need a waterproof boot. The boot is comfortable especially for a leather boot which has not been broken in.” Not only do reviewers believe these boots do a good job of keeping water out, but at least one calls out the wicking feature from the inside: “First heavy snow since purchasing them and trudging through drifts some snow went down inside, but interestingly, the interior seems to wick the moisture away from my feet which is fantastic.”

Best insulated men’s rain boots

Kamik Men's Hunter Boot

Reviewers attest that these boots are both warm and waterproof. “I was standing in a very cold creek for over an hour and a half in these today spending time with my beavers and my feet were warm the entire time with only a cotton pair of socks on under them,” one user writes, adding, “ Not a gosh dang leak either. Twenty-five degrees out snowing like a son of a and my feet were good.” Another reviewer who says they bought them for their husband, who wanted “a pull on, waterproof, insulated boot to get on quickly for outdoor winter chores,” says “He’s been able to wear them numerous times in the snow, snowblowing, shoveling, and other winter chores and he is extremely happy with them.” Many chalk the warmth and waterproofness up to the liner, like one who says, “I really do like that the liner is thick and is removable, over the calf, and for a rubber boot has a medium aggressive tread.” Another concludes, “If you’re walking or stalk hunting, these boots will keep your feet warm.”

Best thin-lined men’s rain boot

Servus Comfort Technology 14

As one user concisely puts it, “The boots are comfortable and easy to get on and off.” Hundreds of users agree, and at least one gives credit to the liner for the ease of wear. “Servus boots have a thin liner that appears to be almost like cotton to make it much easier to put the boot on and take it off… it keeps the rubber from sticking to you,” they explain. According to another customer, these boots are great for “anyone looking for a waterproof boot for light outdoor chores,” but dozens of others also say they can weather a storm. One writes, “I have stepped into puddles half way up my shin and my feet don’t so much as dampen,” while another says, “For outdoor activities or on rainy days at the office these boots can keep those tootsies nice and warm and dry.” But as one customer warns, “Runs a bit big, but can easily add a liner or layers of socks.”

Best men’s muck boot

Muck Boot Chore Classic Men's Rubber Work Boot

“If you have a ‘Mud Season’ like we do these will be your best friends,” one reviewer writes of these muck boots, and reviewers dealing with any kind of mud seem to love these boots. One customer, who had a pair for 15 years before they fell apart, says, “I used them for barn chores, cutting up dead trees, and our land is quite mucking.” Another writes, “I would recommend these highly to anyone who works around any kind of muck: gardening, farming, caring for horses, chickens, etc.” Reviewers say these hold up in rain as well. One writes, “I am quite confident this will keep my feet warm and dry in the snow and have used it in the rainy weather we have had in the mid Atlantic and it kept me dry and feet warm.” Another says, “I couldn’t ask for a more comfortable for a better performing waterproof boot,” and after doing “some weed eating in my ditch where grass was about 18 inches high and ground was real muddy because of rain… the boots performed awesomely and they were super comfortable.”

Best men’s rain boots for fishing

XTRATUF Performance Series 6

Reviewers swear by these boats for a dry fishing trip. “I used these for the first time panga fishing at Cedros island,” one user explains. “My feet have never been happier after fishing. Normally I wear flip flops when fishing on my friends boat or panga fishing and after a full day on the water my feet hurt, not with these! I didn’t wear socks and my feet stayed dry and warm ALL day long.” Another fisherman attests that wearing these meant it was their “First fishing trip that my feet were comfortable, and DRY.” In addition to keeping everything dry many say these boots are easy to get on and off, and at least one compares the comfort level to that of a sneaker: “Light like a tennis shoe, fits like a sock on the foot and are easy on and off with the ankle opening.” Beyond fishing though, customers have found these useful for plenty of other rainy day tasks. “I bought them for my fiancé who works for Amazon and delivers all day - GREAT FOR THE RAIN,” one customer writes, while another calls them “Solid boots that we use for walks through park during the rainy season.”

Best knee-high insulated rain boots

Muck Wetland Rubber Premium Men's Field Boots

“Comfortable” is used by hundreds of reviewers to describe these boots. “Muck boots are waterproof, comfortable and have good traction and support whether carrying packs and canoes over rocky/muddy portages, standing in water, or working burying utilities in muddy trenches, or spring ice fishing — I’ve used the same pair for 9 years — no complaints,” one reviewer writes. Another compares these to other rubber rain boots concluding, “These are much sturdier and have a sort of gel like feel that is comfortable on your feet.” One goes as far to say, “These boots are the most comfortable boots I have ever used.”

Users specifically call out the calf potion of this tall boot. “This particular ‘model’ of Muck’s also incorporates a hugging design around the calf that keep the pant leg tucked in nicely, eliminates most of the problems with debris falling into the boot and keeps the feet warmer,” one reviewer writes, while another says, “They fit just snug enough around your calf that no moisture gets in and they are so well insulated.” One reviewer who penned a love letter to these boots even included a line about the fold-over calfs: “I love thee from the edges of my fickle calves, which some days desire warmth and boot-ishness all the way up to mine knees, whilst other days, they prefer the freedom to roll down thy good boot sides and expose themselves to the warm air.”

Best men’s rain boots for hunting

ArcticShield Men's Waterproof Durable Insulated Rubber Neoprene Outdoor Boots

Dozens of reviewers say these camouflage rain boots are ideal to wear while hunting. “I bought them in October for hunting and have drug several deer out with them,” one reviewer says adding,”I have sat in 20° weather for at least four hours and my feet did not get cold.” Another customer, who calls them “typical bogs with a camo design,” adds, “They are warm and the tread has done well so far in terms of traction in the slippery snow. The bottoms are completely rubber, which is excellent for hunting.” Reviewers also give these boots top marks for holding up in extreme weather. “It’s no joke I have spent hours out in the snow and never had feet problems no leaks and with a liner and a good pair of wool sock feet nice and stay warm.” Another says, “ I wore these while hunting in the snow with temperatures of -4 with the wind chill. They continue, “My feet felt a little chill, but for it being -4 outside I was very impressed with how well my feet felt. I also did a lot of walking in the snow and never had an issue with my feet getting wet.”

In rainy conditions, these boots also earn their stripes. “Wore on a cold rainy camping trip,’ one writes, adding “Feet stayed warm and dry.” Another who says “we travel a lot to the Amazon [jungle] in Peru” adds, “these boots are amazing, no water [gets] in very easy to clean from [mud] that we have a lot in the rainforest.”

Best men’s rain boots for winter

LaCrosse Men's 18

More than 70 percent of reviewers give these boots five-stars and many praise them for being ideal winter boots. “I bought these for canoeing in cold weather (40-28F), but they have become my go-to winter boot with temps as low as 10 degrees,” one writes. Another says, “I love these boots, they are comfortable, warm enough for our -10°F weather as long as one is doing chores outside, easy to get in and out, and usually hold up two seasons, wearing them for 5 months, 3 to 5 hours every day.” Others particularly like how tall these are, helping them walk through whatever nature might throw at them. “The fit was comfortable and luckily these were 18” in height because wanking around in the swampy ground I stepped into an area that anything less would have filled the boot up with water,” one writes, while another says, “They are great wear for deep snow snowshoeing, and you don’t need to wear gators.”

Travel + Leisure / Mariah Tyler

No matter where your travels take you, a pair of comfortable shoes is a necessity. For cold- and warm-weather trips, you’ll be thankful to have supportive footwear with you for walking through the airport and sightseeing.

When it comes to recommending the best men’s travel shoes, Travel + Leisure ’s team of expert product testers tried 20 pairs of comfy kicks. Whether we were walking, commuting, running, or working out, we evaluated each pair based on comfort, quality, value, and fit to compile our list of options below. We love the supportive fit and minimal design of the Hoka Clinton 8 sneakers for all types of travel activities. If sneakers aren’t your jam, we also have picks for comfy boots for the cold and cushioned sandals for tropical vacations.

Best Overall

Hoka one one clifton 8.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Responsiveness 5 /5
  • Stability 5 /5

There is plenty of support and cushioning, and the minimalist design makes these a versatile pair of daily walking or running shoes.

These are performance shoes designed for running.

Hoka sneakers are known for being some of the best on the market, and we think so, too, after testing and loving the Clifton 8 running shoes. From heel to toe, the design of the sneakers is simple, lightweight, and, most importantly, extremely comfortable after we put some serious miles on them  around the city over a six-month period. The mesh upper is breathable for days when your feet get a little sweaty, and the padded tongue adds extra cushioning, so it doesn’t dig into the top of your foot. Hoka’s signature Meta-Rocker sole provides the foundation for an ultra-comfy sneaker, as the curved design feels supportive and bouncy, and the EVA midsoles have just the right amount of cushioning for a soft and absorbing feel for walking long distances.

When it comes down to quality, we’re confident these shoes will last for plenty of trips that are walking-heavy. The Hoka Clifton offers a lightweight and comfortable way to easily navigate a city or explore your own town.

Best Budget

Vans comfycush old skool.

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

These casual sneakers have just the right amount of arch support.

It might be difficult to slip these shoes on and off.

We’re happy to report that the Comfycush Old Skool sneakers have the same casual style as traditional Vans but boast built-in arch support that thoroughly impressed us with their comfort. Even after wearing these regularly for six months, the sole feels thick and supportive and the canvas upper fits snugly without feeling too tight. The high quality immediately stood out to us and the shoes felt more durable than other Vans we've tested.

The laces can be tied nearly up to the ankle, so they’re not the easiest shoes to slip on and off. However, we love that even with the laces tied up, the tongue doesn’t pinch or cause any discomfort, and we’re fans of the secure fit for walking long distances. While most Vans styles can cost over $100, we love that the Comfycush Old Skool sneakers are wallet-friendly and come with ample cushioning.

Best Sustainable

Allbirds tree dasher 2.

The upper, midsole, and sole are all made using eco-friendly materials with a minimal carbon footprint.

They don't feel like heavy-duty shoes you would want to wear walking for miles.

We’re big fans of Allbird’s transparency when it comes to the sustainable materials and methods they use to make their products, including their Tree Dasher 2 sneakers. From heel to toe, these lightweight walking shoes are made with environmentally-friendly materials like a eucalyptus tree fiber upper, a sugarcane-based green EVA midsole, and an  FSC-certified natural rubber  outsole. We love that they're light enough that you could pack these without taking up too much weight in your luggage. Plus, after wearing these regularly for six months, we found them to be extremely comfortable, easy to take on and off, and they don't hurt on long flights.

Besides the sustainability factor, we love that the sneakers are super breathable, making them the ideal closed-toe shoe for tropical climates. While the soles are very soft and cushioned, we wish there was a tad more support for  walking long distances , but we were plenty comfortable while wearing the sneakers to work and running errands. When it rained, the upper did an excellent job warding off the elements, so we didn’t feel any dampness. After trying several pairs of Allbirds sneakers, these stood out for their breathable and sustainable design for traveling.

The Details: 8 to 14 | FSC-certified Tencel Lyocell (eucalyptus tree fiber), sugarcane-based green EVA, FSC-certified natural rubber

Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles

  • Quality 4.5 /5

They feel like wearing cozy slippers with arch support.

There was a small break-in period.

Allbirds continued to impress us during testing, so our next category winner goes to the brand’s Wool Runner Mizzles. Over a period of six months, these became a go-to everyday shoe as they're comfortable for whatever you have planned. Arguably the best part of these cozy kicks is that the upper is made with a plush ZQ merino wool that gives you the feel of a slipper without the appearance of a slipper. These sneakers don’t have the traditional sporty look of a running shoe — they look a bit more elevated or professional. And with ample arch support, cushioning, and traction on the bottom, these are the perfect shoes for wearing while walking around a city or for a  nice dinner .

At first, the tongue of the shoe dug into the top of the foot, but with just a few wears, the upper stretched out a bit, and it became a non-issue. However, we were pleased that the shoe fits true to size and continues to contour to the shape of the foot as more miles get put on the sneakers.

The Details: 8 to 14 | ZQ-certified merino wool, sugarcane-based green EVA, FSC-certified natural rubber

Best for Walking

On cloud 5 shoe.

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

The shoe is very lightweight and easy to slip on and off at the airport.

After six months of heavy, everyday use, the shoes began to break apart.

We think the On Running Cloud 5 sneakers are the best pair of kicks to slide on for comfort and support on the go. We found that the flexible polyester upper allows the shoes to easily slip on and off, making them the ultimate airport footwear. Plus, the brand’s Zero-gravity foam midsole and rubber sole have the perfect balance of support and flexibility. These are lightweight shoes made with high-quality materials, so they look stylish as well. While these sneakers are technically designed for running, we think they are best as walking shoes for travelers looking for a shoe with a more relaxed fit. Because of the lightweight materials, these are super easy to pack in a suitcase or backpack for saving weight and space in a carry-on.

The Details: 7 to 14 | Recycled polyester, Zero-gravity foam, rubber

Best for Workouts

Apl techloom tracer.

  • Comfort 4.3 /5
  • Value 3.5 /5

The soles feel very supportive, and the shoe itself is designed for low- to high-intensity workouts.

The shoes were a bit stiff at first.

We love a versatile pair of shoes like the APL Men’s TechLoom Tracer that combines comfort and support for a range of activities like walking, running or strength training. While these are technically performance sneakers designed for workouts, we found the kicks to be exceptionally supportive for walking through the city and traveling during a  weekend getaway .

And when you want to get in a quick workout at the hotel gym, we think the stiffer ankle and heel cushioning certainly helps with stability and support for leg day. Although the shoe has a solid amount of stiffness, APL’s Propellium EVA midsole and rubber outsole provide plenty of cushion and shock absorption. We found these sneakers run true to size, and the breathable lycra upper is flexible for foot width but also fits those with narrow feet perfectly, too.

The Details: 7 to 15 | Lycra, rubber

Blundstone Men’s Classic 550 Chelsea Boots

  • Durability 3.5 /5

The leather and sturdy construction feel premium and durable.

The boot can’t be resoled.

To avoid frigid toes while  traveling in the cooler months , a pair of 550 Blundstones will do the trick. Crafted with a water-resistant leather upper and elastic sides for breathability, we were immediately impressed by the durable design of these boots. The construction of the boot allows for extreme comfort right out of the box with no break-in period. We found the boots run true to size, and because of the elastic sides, they fit nicely around the ankles without any tightness or discomfort. After wearing the boots in the mud in the countryside and during a rainstorm without any damage to the materials or wet feet, we’re confident these Chelsea boots will stand the test of time. The biggest drawback for us is that the shoes can’t be resoled, so you’ll want to make sure to take good care of them to prolong their longevity.

The Details: 4 to 14 | Leather, rubber

Best Sandals

Teva hurricane xlt2 sandals.

The straps are super comfortable, and the soles have the same support as sneakers.

We wish there were half sizes available.

The Teva Hurricane XLT2 Sandals are the perfect footwear to take you from  the beach  to the river in comfort. We love that these sandals don’t have a break-in period, as they were instantly comfy while wearing them for the first time and still feel like new after wearing them regularly for six months. The quick-dry polyester straps don’t dig in or cause any redness, and the EVA footbed is both supportive and cushioned. The sole is much more like a thick, durable sneaker or a running shoe than a cheap sandal. After three days of basically constant use, including in the pool and on the beach, we saw no visible wear. While we wish these Tevas came in half sizes, we love that there are three straps on either sandal that can be adjusted to customize the fit accordingly, so for that reason, we suggest sizing up if you’re in between sizes.

The Details: 5 to 17 | Polyester, EVA foam, rubber

Best Slip-on

Kizik men's lima.

  • Comfort 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.6 /5

They're breathable with excellent traction.

The heel can feel a bit loose.

Kizik thought about everything when designing the Limas — from the bouncy Rabbit Foam outsoles to extra ankle padding and a spacious toe box, these are some of the most comfortable shoes we tested. After wearing around the house for less than an hour, these shoes were broken in and ready for long walks. While these slip-ons have a looser heel than most sneakers, they don't chafe or slip while you walk. The knit uppers are incredibly breathable, so your feet don't become hot and sweaty even in warm climates, but the insoles are machine washable if you do find they need a refresh. These shoes are made of durable, high-quality materials that are great for packing and sure to last for years to come.

The Details: 4.5 to 15 | Knit, leather

Most Versatile

Thursday boots low top.

Thursday Boots

  • Comfort 3 /5

These unique shoes combine the functionality of sneakers with the materials of a high-quality boot.

They needed a longer break-in period than we would have liked.

We love a pair of sleek sneakers that can be paired with any outfit and this pair from Thursday Boots blends the comfort of a sneaker with the durability of a boot. The outer is crafted with Natural Chromexcel Horween leather while the interior is lined with sheepskin for a soft and comfortable fit. The low tops also sport a dual density rubber outsole that improves traction without making you feel weighed down. While we do wish the shoes had a bit more arch support, they are still comfortable once broken in. They were also surprisingly breathable, considering the thick lining, and packed well in checked and carry-on bags.

The Details: 6 to 16 | Leather and sheepskin

Other Men’s Travel Shoes We Liked

The shoes below were close to making our list but did not make the cut due to several inconveniences during testing, including issues with durability and fit.

Hylo Light :  These sneakers are beyond comfortable, and they look nice enough to wear to work or the gym. However, after wearing them every day for several months, there was a noticeable amount of wear and tear (like, literal tears) that made us skeptical about their durability.

Tropicfeel Canyon Sneaker : These shoes fit well, they have great arch support, the laces don't pinch, and they're nice and breathable. However, we noticed when walking long periods of time, the insoles would slide up and out of the shoe because they aren't fully secured inside.

T+L expert product testers tried 20 pairs of boots, sneakers, and sandals over a period of six months to find men’s travel shoes with the best comfort, fit, value, and quality. Whether we were working in the office, running outdoors, or walking through the city, we rated each pair of shoes on a scale of one to five.

After unboxing the shoes, we did a thorough examination of the quality of the shoe. We asked our testers to look at their construction and note the initial quality of the materials. Then, we wore the shoes for three separate tests to judge the break-in period, the overall comfort after several hours of wear, and the durability of the materials after wearing the shoes for at least one full day (although many of our testers wore these shoes more than what we asked for).

In the end, the highest-scoring travel shoes we tested received glowing reviews for being exceptionally comfortable thanks to arch support and cushioning, fit perfectly right away with a minimal break-in period and are made with high-quality materials meant to last over the course of hundreds of miles.

Tips for Buying Men’s Travel Shoes

Size and width are key.

It’s important to have some wiggle room in your footwear to avoid possible discomfort when you’re on your feet all day. Whether you’re buying shoes in person or online, be sure to give yourself some time to try the shoes on before you leave the house. If your toes are pushed against the front or if the sides of your feet feel pinched, allow yourself enough time to exchange the shoes for a longer or wider size for optimal comfort.

Choose the right type of shoe for your destination

While sneakers might be your go-to shoe in general, there are plenty of other shoe styles, such as comfortable men's loafers , that are supportive enough for all-day wear. If you’re heading to a tropical destination, opt for a pair of sandals, and for a cold-weather trip, be sure to bring a pair of boots or warm sneakers.

Consider packing space

Travelers who prefer a carry-on suitcase should bring lightweight shoes that are more compact, like sneakers or sandals. If you’re heading to a spot where warmer shoes will be needed, consider wearing your boots or bigger shoes while traveling to save space.

To maximize suitcase space and protect your shoes, use a travel shoe bag and place them with the soles facing outward with the uppers toward each other. To prevent creases in sneakers or shoes with a fabric upper, you can stuff socks in to keep the shape while traveling.

It’s important to always read the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning a pair of shoes. If you’re on the go and don’t have access to a washing machine, you can spot-clean your shoes using water and soap if you’re in a pinch.

We recommend prioritizing travel shoes that are versatile, light, and easy to clean. Leather shoes travel well as they're quite durable and generally easy to clean, but do note leather tends to be heavier than other shoe materials. If you're thinking more about packing space and/or you're traveling to a warm-weather destination, textile shoes are great options as they tend to dry quickly and provide both breathability and comfort.

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

Whether shuffling from car to chairlift or slogging in the frozen woods, a good pair of boots is requisite footwear for surviving winter and fall. Here we outline the best winter boots for men.

model standing on rock wearing canvas pants and Danner Arctic 600 Best Boots

It isn’t long after the first flakes start to fall that we’re rummaging through our closets in search of our trusty winter boots. There’s something special about that first walk about the neighborhood when the snow starts to accumulate, and whether you’re aiming to dive headlong into a winter of outdoor adventures, or just make it out with your toes intact, you’re going to need a good pair of winter boots to see yourself through to spring.

To give you a jump start on the season, we’ve kicked the rubber on a lot of soles to find the best winter boots for men. Because winter varies so much around the country — from slush and mud to deep powder — we included a variety of boots from puddle-stomping to hell freezing over.

Our recommendations aren’t given unearned, either. We’ve saddled up in nearly 25 different pairs of winter boots over the seasons, and have worn them everywhere from elk hunts in the high alpine of Colorado, to digging out our rigs from Sierra snowmageddons and approaching North Cascade fire lookout towers after the first snowfall. All those miles add up to a pretty good impression of what flies when the mercury plummets.

Throughout it all, we kept tabs on our feet and compared boots based on their warmth, durability, waterproofing, comfort, and style. We’ve tested all the boots we could get our hands on and used them through rain, snow, mud, and sun on countless adventures around the world. And we’ve whittled it down to our favorites here. These are the boots we recommend to family and friends — the boots we get excited to wear all winter long.

At the end of our list, be sure to check out our comprehensive buyer’s guide , as well as our comparison chart . And if you still have some questions about winter footwear, take a look at our list of frequently asked questions .

Editor’s Note: We updated our Men’s Winter Boots guide on January 31, 2024, to add the Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip as our new top-pick, as well as the Fubuki Niseko 2.0 — a wickedly cozy boot for jumping into after a long day on the ski hill.

Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip

  • Weight 2 lbs., 13 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Waterproof Yes
  • Upper material Suede
  • Width Standard and wide available

Product Badge

  • Slick side-zip makes for easy access while wearing thick layers
  • Well-insulated with 200G PrimaLoft for winter hikes
  • Vibram Arctic Grip outsole provides traction on ice
  • Lightweight and low profile
  • More expensive than some winter hikers
  • Not the most supportive or tall boot shaft

With handsome looks built from a rugged history, Danner has been making quality boots out of Portland, Ore., for nearly 90 years now. We’ve been wearing the brand’s boots for about 30 of those years, and in that time it’s become obvious that the Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip ($240) is just about the best winter boot we’ve had the pleasure of braving winter with.

Offered up as a classic winter hiker, the Arctic 600 doesn’t just look the part (though it does that very well), but is built with all the time-tested building blocks we’ve come to expect in a hardy winter boot. From the ground up, a Vibram Arctic Grip outsole keeps the rubber side planted and provides added traction on icy trails and sidewalks. Mated to that is a suede leather upper bonded with a Danner Dry waterproof membrane, and while it isn’t the name-brand stuff, it accomplishes the job with ease.

The boot itself proved to be waterproof up to within an inch and a half of the collar in our dunk testing (a gusset of the waterproof barrier sits behind the zipper to protect it), and the suede exterior of the Arctic 600 does a bang-up job of holding moisture at bay. The 200 grams of PrimaLoft insulation in these boots is just about right on the money for winter hiking in our opinion, as well.

The boot shaft is 8 inches on the Arctic 600, and while that’s plenty for winter trail tromping, those looking to wade into unpacked snow and slush ought to seek out something with a taller profile, such as the Baffin Control Max or L.L.Bean Leather Snow Boots. $240 is also a high-dollar compared to the rest of the market, but given the longevity we’ve experienced, we’ve got no problem recommending the Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip to anyone looking for a solid winter boot.

Kamik Nation Plus

  • Weight 3 lbs., 10 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Suede with sealed seams
  • Width Standard

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Reliable traction on ice and snow
  • Warm and cozy removable liner

Kamik just can’t be beaten when it comes to budget boots, and the Nation Plus boots ($100) are a fan favorite. They’re waterproof, warm, and impressively durable for the price.

This is a fully waterproof lace-style leather boot bonded to a rubber sole. The removable liner traps heat using 200 g 3M 200B Thinsulate and gives them a whopping rating of 40 below. We did find the rating plenty warm when hanging around town doing errands or stationary activities, like watching a winter carnival parade.

The Nation Plus soles have a lot of traction for a snow boot — much more than Sorel’s venerable Pac Boot . Paired with its flex and snug lacing system, we found the boot helps you navigate ice and deep snow more easily than Sorels, too.

These are big, burly snow boots. What you gain in warmth and height, you sacrifice in mobility and weight. For more active adventures, we recommend a winter hiking boot. If you are looking for a sturdy, cold-weather boot for occasional use, this one is a no-brainer.

Baffin Control Max Heavy-Duty

  • Weight 3 lbs., 7 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Leather upper with sealed seams
  • Width A bit wider than average

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Ideal for very cold weather and deep snow
  • Good grip on ice

If your winter starts in October and ends sometime before the summer solstice, then you’re looking for a workhorse that can lift the soles and spirits.

Baffin’s Control Max ($270) has a whopping bottom end, dipping all the way to -94 degrees F. We’re going to throw our hands up in mercy at that spec. We haven’t tested them to that level and, hopefully, you won’t have to either. But we have worn these for a few winters and have really come to appreciate the warmth-to-weight ratio of this deep winter boot.

The boot is methodically constructed around thermoregulation. Outside, a waterproof leather exterior is triple-stitched to the rubber rand. Inside, a series of heat-reflecting aluminum membranes, foams, and moisture reservoirs move moisture away from the foot and trap the heat.

Underfoot, a waffle-comb footbed traps additional heat in honeycomb-like air pockets. And the entire boot rides over an aggressively lugged “arctic rubber” that’s tacky on ice.

The boot laces shut with four pairs of giant D-rings. The fit can be a touch sloppy, so they’re not our first choice for hiking, where we want a precise fit. But the rings and laces are easy to manipulate with heavy gloves. All in all, the double boot construction does a wonderful job of trapping heat and insulating you from the cold ground.

If your activity level is high, you’ll want something more nimble. If you live in a milder climate, these will be overkill. Our coldest days in these boots were in the low double digits and they didn’t feel overly hot, but we reached for the Baffins on days in the 20s.

The profile is massive underfoot, but the 3.5-pound boot doesn’t collect crud and feels lighter than it looks. If you’re looking for the ultimate cold-winter snow boot, or a boot that works during long periods of inactivity in the cold, the Baffin Control Max will keep you warm and cozy through it all.

Huckberry All-Weather Duckboot (AWD)

  • Weight 3 lbs., 3 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Leather

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Versatile Vibram outsole offers traction on a wide variety of surfaces
  • Rubberized rand and toecaps improve waterproofing
  • Comfortable
  • Not quite stiff enough for use as a workboot or rugged hiker

While we love the classic look of the traditional duck boot, they come up short in several mandatory requirements. The sizing runs large, the traction is sloppy, the midsole lacks support, and they aren’t all that warm. Huckberry tackles all these issues and brings a better duck boot with its All-Weather Duckboot ($188).

Sure, the AWD could appropriately imply “All-Wheel Drive.” A modern take on the classic duck boot, Huckberry’s All-Weather Duckboot is capable of tackling light hikes, trips to the ski hill, and around-town errands in inclement weather. And it does it better than the duck boots of yesterday.

The full-grain leather upper is welted to the rubberized leather rand. It’s 100% waterproof (up to the gusseted tongue) and breathable. A light inner liner doesn’t sport any fancy insulation. But we found it keeps the feet warm and the padded ankle collar traps warm air inside the boot, covering a wide range of winter activities.

What steals the ride, though, is the plush EVA midsole. It’s soft and cushiony and feels like you’re wearing your favorite sneaker rather than a fat, clunky winter boot. The midsole is bonded to a Vibram outsole. It won’t be quite stiff enough for workwear or long hikes, but for clomping around town it’s the ticket.

Rather than featuring overly aggressive traction (or barely any at all), the lugs are generously siped, allowing plenty of ports for underlying water to siphon out from under each step.

Clean styling and functional, the AWD is a refined interpretation of the classic duck boot, better in nearly every way.

Allen Edmonds Park City Lace-Up Weatherproof Boot

  • Weight 3 lbs., 1 oz. (pair, men's size 10)

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Good wet surface traction
  • High-quality materials
  • Nice blend of style and utility
  • Not much ankle support

Allen Edmonds was likely your grandfather’s favorite shoe. The U.S.-made quality has always been stellar, but the brand has fallen out of favor with younger buyers over the years. The brand has revitalized its look to appeal to a new generation of customers. One of our favorite formal winter boots for fall is the Park City boot ($475).

Made in the brand’s Wisconsin factory, the boots feature a waterproof membrane between the Horween leathers. The upper is stitched down to a soft, air-blown Vibram Gloxi outsole. It’s comfortable and has fantastic wet-surface traction.

Wearing more like a foul-weather Chukka, the boot doesn’t have a lot of ankle support and is slightly oversized to accommodate a thicker sock for insulation. (If you want a more secure fit, size down half a size.) This is entirely forgivable for an office boot.

In fact, our only gripe might be the braided gold laces borrowed from a traditional workbook. If you’re already in for $475, we’d recommend upgrading to a nicer lace. (Check out Pisgah Range’s assortment of handcrafted lace upgrades.)

Needless to say, $475 is a steep price. But if you’ve gotta suit up, the stylish Park City boots carry well from the office to the weekends.

L.L.Bean Leather Snow Boots

  • Weight 4 lbs., 5.2 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Tumbled leather

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Removable liner is easy to dry out
  • Durable leather is pre-softened for out-of-the-box fit
  • Rubber lowers are supremely waterproof
  • Softer upper doesn't provide much support
  • Not much traction on ice

Made for tromping out to the wood pile at the cabin, the L.L.Bean Leather Snow Boots ($159) are the classic pac boot done best — done up in a fine leather and rubber build that is sure to last multiple winters.

Our Senior Editor Nick Belcaster used these boots last winter when unusually strong snow storms paralyzed the town and made chores an all-walking affair. “It doesn’t get wickedly cold in the Washington lowlands, but these boots had warmth to spare when making the jog into town.” And, even when the melt-out finally came, these boots slogged through slush without getting soaked.

These snow boots are laid up with a tumbled (that is, textured) leather upper that is triple-stitched to the rubber lowers, which form a sturdy base to mount to. The rubber shell is seam-sealed to keep out leaks, and passed every waterproofing test we could put it through.

Inside that, the interior felt liner is a good ¼” thick, and topped with a fleece fringe around the top that acts as an additional snow guard. We did build up some moisture in this liner over a full day, but a night over the wood stove had our liners ready for another day.

You can also slide into these Snow Boots with a nylon upper , but for long-term durability, it’s hard for us to not suggest springing for the leather version — especially since it’s only an added $10 difference. Once you’ve treated them with a good waterproofing wax, these boots are liable to last you decades.

Like any pac boot, these kicks aren’t lacking in the warmth or comfort departments, but won’t be the best option for longer excursions such as winter hikes, due to their more accommodating fit and softer uppers. We found the L.L.Bean Leather Snow Boots shined instead as the best pac boots to kick on after a day on the ski hill, or beating in a new path to the mailbox after another night of sideways snow.

Fubuki Niseko 2.0

  • Weight 3 lbs. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material EVA

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Impressively warm polyester lining
  • Rugged EVA outsole and shaft can take a beating
  • Incorporates an ABS toecap to protect against dropped skis
  • 10 different fun color schemes
  • Difficult to get hands-on in the States
  • Forget about driving in these boots

We’ve saddled up in a spread of après boots over the years, and can confidently say that the Fubuki Niseko 2.0 ($149) lands at the top of the ski hill with all the parameters we’re looking for: Easy to jump into, toasty warm, and just dang fun to boot around in.

Inspired by the footwear of Japanese industry workers in snow-bound Hokkaido, the Niseko 2.0 could be thought of as the spiritual brethren of the Japanese Showa fishing gloves that draw cult-like fanatism in ice-climbing circles. It’s co-opted workwear gone all-around functional, and there’s a certain utilitarian allure under all those colors.

Swaddled in a thick EVA outer, these boots go no-nonsense with their polyester insulation, and pile in a lot of it. Protecting that lining is a 100% wind- and waterproof shell that passes our waterproofing test with flying colors. And because of the undeniable tenacity of EVA (pray to your patron saint of petrochemicals), these boots can take a licking and keep on kicking. Not the most sustainable, though the company is mindful of its impact and is working toward reaching net zero emissions by 2025.

Because Fubuki is a Swedish brand it can take a hot minute for your new kicks to hit your stoop, which also complicates returns (make sure you triple-check your sizing!) but the company is hopefully opening a North American warehouse soon to keep up with the high demand. Also, know that driving is pretty much out of the question with such a tall and somewhat inflexible boot shaft. Ask us how we figured that out.

For those looking for a drivable pair of après footwear, the XTRATUF Deck Ankle Boots are easy-as to slip into and work the pedals, just not as warm as the Nisekos. For post-ski hill kickbacks and even expedition basecamp footwear, however, the Fubuki Niseko 2.0 well makes the grade in our books.

KEEN Revel IV Mid Polar Boot

  • Weight 2 lbs., 4 oz. (pair)
  • Upper material Leather and mesh
  • Width Slightly wider than standard

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Comfortable fit
  • Not quite supportive enough for hiking with exceptionally heavy loads

Immediately out of the box, the KEEN Revel IV Mid Polar Boot ($180) feels amazing. The padding is generous, and the volume is ample. The boots have extra volume over the top of the foot and in the toebox, which is critical for keeping the toes warm. This also makes it a good fit for a variety of foot widths.

Beefed up with waterproof, salt-resistant leather and rubber rands, the Revels resist wear and tear and ice-melting chemicals that can be hard on boots.

The boot rides over sharp-edged 5 mm lugs that really bite into the crust. And like Vibram’s Arctic Grip (used in Danner’s Arctic 600 ), KEEN has its own slip-reducing rubber pads. They give you noticeably better traction on slick, wet ice.

With so many good attributes, it was tough not to award the Revel IV as our favorite boot this winter. It’s warm, comfortable, and secure around the foot. Our only criticism is that we wish the Revel was a little stiffer, and hence more predictable and stable when hiking across pockmarked snow trails.

Still, the Revel IV is a very capable winter boot. It is offered in both an 8-inch version and a tall one. If you’re really stepping out into deep powder — like elk hunts in winter — we’d recommend investing in the high-collar boot. It’s also rated down to -40 degrees, which makes it a true polar boot.

Blundstone 566 (Thermal)

  • Weight 2 lbs., 2 oz. (pair, men's size 10)

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Requires a short break-in period
  • Not ideal for technical hiking

Blundstone’s sleek silhouette has earned the Aussie Chelsea iconoclast status. The brand’s Thermal Boots have a touch of Thinsulate under the leather vamp that stretches their utility beyond the Australian outback.

The Blundstone 566 ($280) is deceivingly slim — so slim, in fact, that when we unboxed the boot, we weren’t sure we received the right model. But don’t let its svelte lines keep you inside.

The Thinsulate liner punches above its weight, is fully waterproof, and is warm enough to wear to work on frigid days. What seals the deal, though, is the fat shearling footbed that feels like you’re walking on plush carpeting. Two generous pull tabs and elastic stretch panels make it easy to pull the boot on and off.

The boot feels a little stiff, and the low cut won’t keep deep snow from funneling in. But for hikers looking to kick the classic styling well into the cooler months, the 566 Thermals are a solid bet.

The fit is true, but keep in mind that Australian sizes run one full size smaller. (For example, a U.S. 10 is an Australian/U.K 9.)

XTRATUF 6″ Deck Ankle Boot

  • Weight 2 lbs., 11 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Rubberized neoprene

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Reliable waterproofing
  • Ideal for errands and wearing around the house
  • Not the warmest

We’ve worn our XTRATUF 6-Inch Deck ankle boots ($105) nearly year-round. They’re easy to slip into, and they have a little tab in the back that helps get them off the heels.

They don’t have a lot of support, so don’t expect to do heavy work in them. And the neoprene starts to lose its insulation value at around 40 degrees F. But we always keep our pair by the back door. They’re great for quick errands and running trash outback, and they’re just about perfect for gardening.

The highest accolades we could probably give them don’t actually come from us. It comes from my sprinkler guy. All he wears are low-cut rubber boots; he saw our boots and asked where we got them. He now lives in his 6-inch XTRATUF Deck Boots .

At the risk of likening these to Crocs, these boots are quickly becoming the hottest shoe for winter, and XTRATUF seems to be aware of it. You can choose from 10 colors to match your mood.

Bogs Bozeman Tall

  • Weight 2 lbs., 9 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Rubberized synthetic material
  • Width Slightly narrow fit

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Truly waterproof
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable for all-day wear
  • Not ideal for folks with very wide feet

When the mercury drops but winter chores pile up, it’s time for a full-on snow boot. Whether chopping wood or walking the dog, the neoprene Bogs Bozeman boots ($160) are rated to -72 degrees F and will keep your feet warm and dry through the sloppiest of conditions. The cushioned sole offers excellent rebound and makes for a comfortable all-day boot.

And one of the standout features is the weight, or lack thereof. Each boot weighs just over 2.5 pounds, and the seamless construction reduces extra materials, keeping these boots 30% lighter than comparable boots. They look burly and are built to last, but we were pleasantly surprised that they don’t feel cumbersome.

In use, our only issue was that folks with fairly wide feet just couldn’t get these boots to be comfortable. Hopefully, Bogs makes a wider last version in the future for our bigfoot friends.

Don’t need this much coverage? The Bozeman’s are also available in a mid version ($155).

Crispi Briksdal GTX

  • Upper material Nubuck leather

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Great for long hikes in rugged terrain
  • Warm without excess bulk
  • Stiff and supportive

The Crispi Briksdal GTX ($435) is a stiff model on a board last. It has a GORE-TEX insulated lining, and a protective rubber rand that guards toes against bashing rocks. Its heavy Nubuck leather upper provides durability against abrasive contact, and the Vibram sole will grab earth, rock, and snow for traction.

Yes, Crispi boots are expensive. But for those who do big miles off-trail in rough terrain in the winter, they’re worth the investment. Crispi is an Italian manufacturer that focuses on hunting boots. For those who haven’t chased elk through the mountains, know there’s nothing outside of full-on mountaineering that tests footwear like hunting.

And Crispis have proven themselves in the roughest terrain and cold weather. Meant for mountain exploration in winter, those who want a pair of boots that will stand up to cold, wet, off-trail terrain should start their search with these boots .

Danner Recurve 400G

  • Weight 2 lbs., 14 oz. (pair, men's size 10)
  • Upper material Leather and suede
  • Width Standard with a roomy toebox

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Fully capable on rough and rocky terrain
  • Requires a few wears to break in

The Danner Recurve 400G ($250) is a wonderfully versatile winter boot. It hits a great compromise of lightweight and durability with a fairly soft, flexible sole. While Danner designed this as a hunting boot, the Recurve can handle winter mountain hiking and shoulder season trails with aplomb.

One of our editors tested it while elk hunting in the Rocky Mountains. They held up great even after 48 miles of continuous hiking to haul out an elk — half of that with a 100-pound pack on his back. The 400 g Thinsulate insulation kept his feet warm in the mornings down to about 15 degrees F, while the Danner Dry membrane kept out water even when slogging through streams.

The Vibram outsole, while relatively soft and pliable, held up to steep climbs off trails. It’s worth noting that for super-steep terrain, the sole might be a tad on the soft side, especially if you plan to kick steps. But in rough conditions, it did suffice.

These weigh in at 48 ounces a pair. For an insulated, 7-inch boot that can withstand the rigors of elk hunting, that’s pretty light indeed.

Stio Colter Boot

  • Waterproof Water resistance suede upper lacks a waterproof membrane
  • Upper material Oiled suede
  • Width Standard yet roomy

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • The shallow tread pattern isn't ideal for snow and mud

With the warm liner of slippers and the sleek style of Chelsea boots, Stio’s new Colter marks the brand’s first foray into footwear. We’ve been testing a pair of Colter Boots  ($169) since spring 2022, and compliments have been rolling in at a steady clip.

We especially like the boot’s water-resistant leather upper, which beads moisture and keeps our feet dry in light rain. In our initial testing, the Colter’s outsole offers excellent grip on wet and icy surfaces.

This is the ideal footwear for après-ski. After you release your tootsies from their ski boot foot prisons, the Colters offer a welcome reprieve. The wool-blend lining is soft and offers warmth without restricting blood flow or movement.

The outsole tread is pretty shallow, so we don’t recommend riding through deep snow or mud in these boots. The rubber itself is quite sticky on wet pavement and smooth ice. Ultimately, we recommend this boot for casual everyday uses like walking the dog and running errands. Due to the sleek Chelsea-boot styling, the Colter is also a choice for drinks at the bar.

Helly Hansen Garibaldi V3

  • Waterproof Yes, seamed seals and rubberized toe-to-heel rand

The Best Winter Boots for Men in 2024

  • Sleek dressy appearance
  • Grippy outsole
  • Faux fur lining takes a long time to dry
  • Fairly soft mid and outsole

This handsome boot combines elegant styling and rock-solid materials. Due to their faux fur lining and dressy appearance, most people will prefer to use these boots for urban use. Still, the outsole is fully capable on mild to moderate trails, and the Primaloft insulation is very warm. The Garibaldi V3 boots ($160) can be worn hard, even if they look like formal footwear.

We tested these boots in various mountain towns from the Canadian Rockies to southern Colorado. On icy city streets and muddy urban trails, our feet remained warm and dry. Plus never slipped and fell onto our butts – the tread pattern is confidence-inspiring on various surfaces.

A pair of men’s size 10s weighs 3 pounds even, which is reasonably light for an insulated ankle-high winter boot. The ankle support is great, but the mid-and-outsoles are quite soft and flexible.

We recommend the Garibaldi V3 for everyday urban use, post-ski comfort, and casual hikes on low-angle trails.

How We Tested Men’s Winter Boots

Our team includes skiers, hunters, climbers, thru-hikers, and cyclists, and our activity doesn’t stop when winter rolls around. Every year, we field-test dozens of winter-ready boots on the market and compare notes to determine our favorites. We’ve tested boots while trudging through the snow with heavy packs and pursuing elk through frozen mud.

GearJunkie’s Editorial Director Sean McCoy is no stranger to a snow-bound romp in the highlands, and regularly pursues big game in the alpine of Colorado where cold feet are simply not an option. McCoy spearheaded the testing of winter hunting boots for this guide and aimed to balance a test of grizzled durability with the need for undying off-trail traction when testing winter boots.

Contributor Austin Beck-Doss has a front-row seat to the brutality of a Wyoming winter from his station in Lander, where his transition from climbing season to snowboarding can be as short as a 48-hour storm cycle. Beck-Doss has been putting boots on the ground for this guide since 2022, and maintains a broad view over the category from slush-city cruisers to insulated après ski lot slippers.

Finally, Senior Editor Nick Belcaster may have a problem understanding the concept of a “shoulder season”, and regularly sets out into the mountains of the North Cascades as the first snows of the season are blowing in. An accomplished backpacker, mountaineer, and splitboarder, Belcaster has also advised and outfitted thousands of mountaineering clients in appropriate cold-weather footwear in his time, and knows that cold toes won’t do when the summit is calling.

When we test a boot for cold weather performance, we pay extra attention to warmth, ice and snow traction, and durability. Our waterproofing testing involves exposure to rain, snow, puddles, mud, and other elements that you’re likely to encounter between October and May. And if the weather fails to materialize, we improvise and bust out the garden hose. All told, we have drowned about 20 pairs of boots through our testing since 2021, and most all come out on the other side shining.

Our recommendations are not fixed in time. As new winter boots hit the market, we’ll be waiting to put them to the test. If they’re exceptional, we’ll be sure to add them to this list.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Winter Boots for Men

Winter boots come in all sorts of shapes and styles. As our list of recommendations demonstrates, the winter boot market contains everything from extreme weather work boots to stylish formal footwear. With so many options, it can feel daunting to sift through the pile and select the perfect pair.

When choosing the best boots for you, it’s important to understand some of the key factors that differentiate one pair from the next. In this comprehensive buyer’s guide, we thoroughly explain each of these factors to help you make a confident and informed choice.

This list doesn’t cover every boot out there, but it’s quite comprehensive. We have a separate article if you’re looking for the  best winter boots for women .

Types of Winter Boots

As sure as there are at least 50 words for snow, winter too can come in many different forms, from middling skiffs of transient powder to full-blown arctic blizzards that will get down to where Fahrenheit and Celsius meet. Because of this, not every winter boot will be the same, nor should they be.

Some are perfectly suited to setting out on one last hike of fall, while others prefer the brief transit between the door and the mailbox. When looking for a pair of winter boots, begin here by deciding on what exactly you’re angling to get done in your boots, and purchase based on what a boot excels at, not just what it can be pressed into service doing.

Casual Winter Boots

While they won’t be the warmest or the most waterproof, casual winter boots undoubtedly get the job done for cruising around a snowbound downtown or slipping into after a ripper of a day on the ski hill. Boots of this ilk won’t pile on the rubber, and more often use a higher leather or synthetic content to keep things light. Insulation levels will be around the mid-range, and support and comfort will be in high measure when compared to overall ability. These are your all-day snow shovelers (if it’s not too deep).

Insulated Chelsea boots like the Blundstone 566 (Thermal) are perfect examples of winter boots that are capable enough for a plowed sidewalk, but not quite tall enough to brave the drifts. You’d also be hard-pressed to keep us out of our Stio Colter Boots for après activities, and for more wet-weather climates like the Pacific Northwest, the XTRATUF 6″ Deck Ankle Boot are a fisherfolk favorite for when the waters are rising.

Snow Hiking Boots

If the first snowfall of the season ignites some primal fire in you to get out into it, you’ll likely need a bit more than your regular hiking kicks. Winter hiking boots are best thought of bulked-up hikers with additional insulation and traction, but maintain a similar mid-height boot cut to not impede foot control. Traction, too, is important here, with snow and ice-specific rubber outsoles like Vibram’s Arctic Grip being unrivaled in slick situations.

For light-duty use, the Helly Hansen Garibaldi V3 has enough chutzpah to hack it on groomed urban trails, but if real trekking is what you’ve got in mind, the rugged Vibram Arctic Grip outsole and added toe room for insulation of the Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip  has our hearts.

Best Men's Winter Boots — Danner Arctic

Born out of necessity, duck boots trace their lineage back to an old Mainer by the familiar name of Leon Leonwood Bean, who grew weary of his leather hiking boots slowly becoming soaked on his forays into the depths of the Northeast. Working with a cobbler, Bean glommed the lower portion of a rubber rain boot onto the leather upper of hunting boots, and created one helluva winter tromping boot. Duck boots today are still identified by this hybrid construction, which makes them perfect footwear for getting chores around the cabin done.

If you’re a sucker for the real deal, the L.L.Bean Leather Snow Boots draw a direct line from the OGs, and are dang tough to boot. And if you want all that classic styling, but refuse to compromise on things like comfort and support, the Huckberry All-Weather Duckboot (AWD) is the idea taken to its natural (and cozy) conclusion. These duck boots won’t be the best for big days, but for kicking around they make the grade.

With roots in the military, pac boots were originally rubber-soled overboots that soldiers would place over their boots to add additional warmth and waterproofing. Today, the term pac boot has evolved to mean pretty much any boot that sports a removable liner. It can be said that many pac boots also exhibit the characteristics of duck boots, but the liner is the key difference, and one that makes these boots far more versatile for multi-day use. Sizing is typically fairly generous to accommodate large socks, and as such, overall control is a bit limited.

Our top pick for a pac boot was the L.L.Bean Leather Snow Boots , which incorporate a felt liner that was easy to pull in and out of the boot and dry over our wood stove. The budget-minded Kamik Nation Plus boots will only cost you $100 and also perform the same feat, and for a high-end no-compromises boot, the Baffin Control Max Heavy-Duty loads up on tech to keep your feet warm.

Winter Hunting Boots

The chase doesn’t have to end when the weather turns for the worst, and in fact, many hunters enjoy the challenge of tracking quarry through the snow. Hunting boots for winter don’t make any concessions in the traction department, and anticipate muddy, rocky, and slick conditions. These boots require a good bit of added insulation to ensure your feet don’t go numb sitting in a tree stand for hours on end. Look for at least 300-gram insulation in any winter hunting boot, with some going all the way to 1,600 grams.

The stiff soles on the Crispi Briksdal GTX Boots won’t wilt under the full weight of packing out an elk on your back, and our Editorial Director has the notched tag to prove it. For more fleet-footed hunts like chasing pheasants, the Danner Recurve 400G is a slightly more forgiving and nimble boot that still packs in 400-gram insulation.

Winter Work Boots

Nobody said that mucking out a barn in -15 was going to be easy, but somebody has got to do it. Winter work boots don’t often have the luxury of a clean slate of untouched snow to traipse across, and if icy mud is more your office, then a good pair of winter work boots is in order. Waterproofing in these boots is an absolute, and rubber and neoprene constructions reign here. High-cut boots are also a necessity, with calf-highs not being uncommon.

The Bogs Bozeman Tall Boots are easily the most work-ready winter boots out of our tested bunch, with a 14.5″ collar and 7mm-thick neoprene insulation that kept us warm while splitting wood this previous winter. And for serious work, Bogs even makes a line of insulated boots that incorporate a steel toe.

Temperature Ratings

Any winter footwear worth its weight will offer plentiful warmth. Many winter boots come with a specific temperature rating. While these ratings can be helpful guidelines, the actual feel of a pair of boots will always be a better indicator of warmth than a manufacturer’s rating.

Often, boots claim to have very impressive temperature ratings well below zero. Because there is no standardized test for boot temperature ratings, always take these numbers with a grain of salt. The warmth of a boot comes from various factors, including sock thickness, activity level, personal cold tolerance, and much more.

A winter boot rated to -10 degrees F will likely feel warmer than a boot rated to zero made by the same manufacturer. Using temperature ratings to compare boots from different manufacturers is a less reliable practice. We certainly recommend trying boots on to get a real impression of their warmth and comfort.

Men's Winter Boots Temperature Ratings

Insulation Type

Winter boots utilize a variety of different insulation types to achieve the desired combination of warmth and comfort. The most common types of insulation are synthetic, felt, and sheepskin.

Most modern winter boots are equipped with synthetic insulation. Between the outer shell and the inner lining of the boot, synthetic materials provide lightweight and durable warmth. Perhaps the most important benefit of synthetic material is that it can insulate even when wet.

Popular name-brand synthetic insulation options include Thinsulate and PrimaLoft, though many other quality options are available. No matter the name brand, the total weight of synthetic insulation will always be a better indicator of warmth than the name brand.

Many manufacturers include the insulation weight in their boot specifications. Lightweight to midweight boots will usually have a fill rating of 200-400 g. If you are seeking heavy-duty boots for extreme cold, look for a fill rating of at least 300 g.

Felt and Sheepskin

Felt and sheepskin are materials that have long been used to insulate winter footwear. While synthetic insulation is by far the current norm, some manufacturers opt for classic and traditional materials.

The downside of felt and sheepskin insulation is they tend to be heavy and bulky. Still, these materials can be warm and comfortable. Usually, felt and sheepskin is utilized in a boot’s lining where they can be in direct contact with the foot. While these materials provide warmth even when wet, they may become extra heavy when saturated and require lots of time to dry.

As you might expect, heavier boots are usually built for the worst conditions, while lightweight winter boots are better for moderate temperatures and less demanding uses. As the thickness of the outsoles and the fill rating of insulation increases, the overall weight goes up. Lightweight winter boots are great for active use, but they often sacrifice some stability, grip, and warmth.

Boot Height

Men's Winter Boot Height

Almost all winter boots are ankle-high or higher. Boot height is a major factor that determines the intended function of the boot.

On the low end of the boot height spectrum are lightweight hiking-style boots such as the  Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip . Lower-cut boots typically measure around 7 inches from the footbed to the top of the boot. Lower-cut boots are ideal for hiking, as they tend to be relatively light and flexible.

The downside of lower-cut boots is they allow snow to seep in, especially when post-holing through a deep snowpack. If you find yourself in bottomless snow with a pair of ankle-high boots, a  pair of gaiters may offer a simple solution .

If you plan to use your boots in regions with lots of snow accumulation, you’ll probably want to pick boots at least 8 inches tall. Work boots and boots for extreme weather are designed to sit higher on the leg, keeping the elements out and the warmth in. On this list, the  Baffin Control Max  is a high-cut and extremely warm boot ideal for the coldest, snowiest conditions.

Waterproofing

Nothing beats a reliable pair of boots that keep your feet warm and dry no matter how bad the weather gets. Waterproofing is the difference between blissful comfort and soggy misery.

Waterproofing is ultimately a product of the materials incorporated into a boot’s design. Features such as rubber outer layers and an exterior water-resistant treatment are standards of the most waterproof boots.

All of the boots we’ve selected are designed to keep water out as much as possible. Some of the more robust included models feature a two-piece system that includes an outer waterproof barrier and an inner removable liner. On this list, the  Kamik Nation Plus  is a great and affordable two-piece boot that successfully keeps moisture out.

One-piece boots typically feature a waterproof membrane sandwiched in between the outer material and the lining. While one-piece boots usually don’t have the failproof waterproofing of many two-piece styles, they tend to be lighter and more flexible.

On this list, the  Fubuki Niseko 2.0 is a burly all-EVA boot with a full-foot-tall shaft that refuses to let water in.

Best Men's Winter Boots — Fubuki Niseko Soles

Breathability

The downside of built-in insulation and waterproof membranes is decreased breathability. While boots that trap heat are certainly desirable, overheating can be a real concern, even in extremely cold weather. For this reason, a reasonable degree of breathability is an asset in winter boots.

Generally, lightweight hiking-style winter boots are more breathable than gravy-duty work boots or two-piece models that thrive in extreme cold. While hiking or performing other strenuous activities, breathability can help to prevent sweating and blisters.

Ultimately, breathability is a trade-off. Winter boots simply cannot be completely waterproof and extreme weather-ready and fully breathable at the same time.

If you’re simply looking for top-notch warmth or waterproofing, breathability doesn’t need to be a major consideration when selecting boots. If you plan to wear your boots for active use in a wide range of conditions, be sure to select a breathable pair.

Outer Material

A winter boot’s exterior material will significantly affect its waterproofing, breathability, and weight. Rubber and leather are the most common outer materials.

The waterproof qualities of rubber boots are unbeatable. For decades, brands such as Muck Boot and  XTRATUF  have been well-regarded for their nearly impenetrable rubber boots. In constantly wet and rainy regions such as the Pacific Northwest, rubber boots are a rightfully popular choice.

The downside of rubber as an outer material is its lack of breathability. In the same way that rubber boots successfully keep moisture out, they also keep moisture in. For long hikes and active use, rubber is not the ideal outer material.

Leather boots have been a popular winter footwear choice for hundreds of years. While leather does not provide the impenetrable qualities of rubber, it is a supple, durable, and relatively water-resistant material.

Compared to rubber boots, leather models tend to breathe slightly better. If you plan to wear your boots in a wide range of weather conditions, leather boots are an excellent and versatile choice.

Outsoles and Grip

Men's Winter Boot Outsoles

The outsole is the part of a boot that makes direct contact with the ground underneath. Good grip is essential to a winter boot’s value and performance.

True winter boots come with outsoles designed to provide reliable grip in cold and snowy conditions. To account for subfreezing temps, many winter boot outsoles feature soft rubber compounds that don’t overly harden in the cold. Additionally, thoughtfully designed tread patterns can prevent snow and mud from building up.

Outsole compounds and tread patterns vary wildly across the winter boot market. Generally, models geared toward hiking will have a deep tread and superior grip. Work boots typically come with heavy, bulky outsoles that prioritize durability above grip.

In severe conditions, you may want more winter traction than your boots can offer on their own. No matter how deep and sticky your tread is, chances are it won’t help on solid sheets of ice.

Traction devices such as Yaktrax and  MICROspikes  can be fixed onto the bottom of winter boots for improved grip on ice and hardpack. These devices have metal components designed to dig into ice and improve traction — just like tire chains on a car.

Fit and Sizing

Properly sizing winter boots can be a tricky process. Unlike with most footwear, you’ll likely wear extra thick socks with your winter boots, and it’s important to consider this when picking a size.

Ideally, your winter boots will be comfortable and free of major air pockets and hot spots. Of course, the best fit for you depends on the type of activity you’re using the boots for.

If you’ll be hiking or working on your feet, we recommend a snug fit for maximum performance. If you plan to use your boots for hanging out casually or simply wearing them about town, a looser, comfort-first fit is the way to go.

As always, there’s no substitute for trying on shoes, and we highly recommend you do so if possible.

Winter boots typically start out at a bottom dollar of $100, and for the budget price, there’ll be some concessions made to hit the price point. This is the realm of casual winter boots, which typically are less insulated, and likely to use suede leather or synthetics in their uppers.

The outsoles will also often be molded together with the boot lowers, which is a cheaper manufacturing process but not as durable. For the money, the Kamik Nation Plus was a boot that absolutely punched above its weight class.

Mid-range boots will often run between $150 and $300, and this is where most winter hiking and snow boots reside. These boots will often spring for a more top or full-grained leather, and may incorporate a proprietary waterproof lining into the build. Vibram soles also make an appearance here, which can greatly enhance the traction on hard-packed snow or ice. The Baffin Control Max Heavy-Duty and Danner Arctic 600 Side-Zip   are two mid-range boots that give a lot for a moderate amount of money.

Anything north of $400 means you’re paying for either luxury or extreme durability, with both the Allen Edmonds Park City Lace-Up and Crispi Briksdal GTX being prime examples. For the high dollar, boots like these utilize name-brand technologies that lead the market in terms of warmth, traction, and durability, such as Italian Nubuck leather, Vibram outsoles, GORE-TEX liners, and the higher-end PrimaLoft insulations. All of these materials cost more to produce, and as such command a higher dollar amount.

What makes a boot winter-worthy is weather protection. Insulation and waterproofness keep the feet warm and dry. So consider waterproofness a requirement, not a nice-to-have.

Ask yourself if you’ll frequently be in rainy, or wet conditions or if slushy snow is a common occurrence. If so, prioritize waterproofness. Just be aware that it often comes at the cost of breathability and excessive heat retention.

These days, shoe sole technology is a science all its own and can truly make or break the shoe. If you find yourself walking and hiking in icy conditions, pay special attention to the tread grip and look for one designed for ice.

Vibram makes an arctic-grip lug that has a tackiness on slick, icy surfaces. It’s not as grippy as microspikes, but it adds extra confidence when walking on ice.

Many boots have replaced the liner with insulation directly in the boot. The benefit of the liner is you can remove it and set it out to dry between uses. The downside is that liners can sometimes cause extra movement and friction, which can lead to blisters and discomfort.

The main considerations with height are ankle articulation, keeping snow out, and comfort. If you regularly get out in deep snow and want a lot of support, choose a taller boot.

Be aware that taller boots can have different diameters. If you have larger calf muscles, you may need to try a few pairs on to see if they fit your legs.
