Incredible service – so helpful Excellent service! Chazile went above and beyond to prepare me for my travels to south east Asia. Very kind, sharp and added helpful bits of information that will be useful during my travels. Even created a vaccine booklet for me that I asked for to keep track of my vaccines for the future. Highly recommended The London Vaccination Clinic. Thanks again Chazile 🙂 Nick

Travel vacines

Attended a consultation for travel vacines, the nurse explained everything with care, provided good advice. We then add a follow up consultation with a different nurse for the vaccines and was also very kind and professional. Was very impressed, we did not feel pressured to have more vacines then reasonable and both nurses gave pricing information upfront.

Very positive experience

Really easy to book and the nurse who I saw in Liverpool Street was really kind and helpful. She went through my vaccination history, what I needed for my trip and explained everything I needed to know ahead of administrating the vaccine I needed. I am glad I arrived early as the venue was tricky to find as the name of the building has changed so doesn’t match Google maps. Put me in a slight panic as I thought I was going to miss my appointment but I found it in the end!

Thorough and helpful consult

Travel vaccination advice

If you're planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.

Vaccinations are available to protect you against infections such as yellow fever , typhoid and hepatitis A .

In the UK, the  NHS routine immunisation (vaccination) schedule protects you against a number of diseases, but does not cover all of the infectious diseases found overseas.

When should I start thinking about the vaccines I need?

If possible, see the GP or a private travel clinic at least 6 to 8 weeks before you're due to travel.

Some vaccines need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity.

And some vaccines involve a number of doses spread over several weeks or months.

You may be more at risk of some diseases, for example, if you're:

  • travelling in rural areas
  • backpacking
  • staying in hostels or camping
  • on a long trip rather than a package holiday

If you have a pre-existing health problem, this may make you more at risk of infection or complications from a travel-related illness.

Which travel vaccines do I need?

You can find out which vaccinations are necessary or recommended for the areas you'll be visiting on these websites:

  • Travel Health Pro
  • NHS Fit for Travel

Some countries require proof of vaccination (for example, for polio or yellow fever vaccination), which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country.

Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination against certain types of meningitis for visitors arriving for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

Even if an ICVP is not required, it's still a good idea to take a record of the vaccinations you have had with you.

Find out more about the vaccines available for travellers abroad

Where do I get my travel vaccines?

First, phone or visit the GP practice or practice nurse to find out whether your existing UK vaccinations are up-to-date.

If you have any records of your vaccinations, let the GP know what you have had previously.

The GP or practice nurse may be able to give you general advice about travel vaccinations and travel health, such as protecting yourself from malaria.

They can give you any missing doses of your UK vaccines if you need them.

Not all travel vaccinations are available free on the NHS, even if they're recommended for travel to a certain area.

If the GP practice can give you the travel vaccines you need but they are not available on the NHS, ask for:

  • written information on what vaccines are needed
  • the cost of each dose or course
  • any other charges you may have to pay, such as for some certificates of vaccination

You can also get travel vaccines from:

  • private travel vaccination clinics
  • pharmacies offering travel healthcare services

Which travel vaccines are free?

The following travel vaccines are available free on the NHS from your GP surgery:

  • polio (given as a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab )
  • hepatitis A

These vaccines are free because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.

Which travel vaccines will I have to pay for?

You'll have to pay for travel vaccinations against:

  • hepatitis B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • tick-borne encephalitis
  • tuberculosis (TB)
  • yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccines are only available from designated centres .

The cost of travel vaccines that are not available on the NHS will vary, depending on the vaccine and number of doses you need.

It's worth considering this when budgeting for your trip.

Other things to consider

There are other things to consider when planning your travel vaccinations, including:

  • your age and health – you may be more vulnerable to infection than others; some vaccines cannot be given to people with certain medical conditions
  • working as an aid worker – you may come into contact with more diseases in a refugee camp or helping after a natural disaster
  • working in a medical setting – a doctor, nurse or another healthcare worker may require additional vaccinations
  • contact with animals – you may be more at risk of getting diseases spread by animals, such as rabies

If you're only travelling to countries in northern and central Europe, North America or Australia, you're unlikely to need any vaccinations.

But it's important to check that you're up-to-date with routine vaccinations available on the NHS.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Speak to a GP before having any vaccinations if:

  • you're pregnant
  • you think you might be pregnant
  • you're breastfeeding

In many cases, it's unlikely a vaccine given while you're pregnant or breastfeeding will cause problems for the baby.

But the GP will be able to give you further advice about this.

People with immune deficiencies

For some people travelling overseas, vaccination against certain diseases may not be advised.

This may be the case if:

  • you have a condition that affects your body's immune system, such as HIV or AIDS
  • you're receiving treatment that affects your immune system, such as chemotherapy
  • you have recently had a bone marrow or organ transplant

A GP can give you further advice about this.

Non-travel vaccines

As well as getting any travel vaccinations you need, it's also a good opportunity to make sure your other vaccinations are up-to-date and have booster vaccines if necessary.

Although many routine NHS vaccinations are given during childhood, you can have some of them (such as the MMR vaccine ) as an adult if you missed getting vaccinated as a child.

There are also some extra NHS vaccinations for people at higher risk of certain illnesses, such as the flu vaccine , the hepatitis B vaccine and the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) .

Your GP can advise you about any NHS vaccinations you might need.

Covid pop-up vaccination centre returns to Liverpool Street Station

A pop-up Covid vaccination centre returns to the Square Mile tomorrow – offering workers and residents the chance to get their jab.

The mobile unit will be stationed outside Liverpool Street Station on Wednesday 2 February from 10am - 6.30pm.

As the Omicron variant of Covid-19 continues to spread, people are being urged to get the booster jab to ensure they receive maximum protection against the virus.

People can also turn up at the pop-up centre to get their first or second Covid jab if they haven’t already received it. No appointment is needed and you do not need to be registered with a GP.

The centre will be open to everyone, but it has a particular focus on the Square Mile’s cleaners, security and construction workers who continue to have to attend in person due to the nature of their work, but generally have lower vaccination rates.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee Ruby Sayed said:

“This pop-up unit will provide a simple, convenient way for City workers and those living in the Square Mile, to get the jab.

“Ensuring you’re fully vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and the wider community from getting seriously ill with the virus and to reduce pressure on our NHS this winter.

“Any dose of the vaccine provides protection against Covid so I’d urge people who haven’t already had their first or second jab to take advantage of this opportunity to receive it – it’s not too late.”

The Covid booster jab is available at the pop-up site to over-18s while the first and second doses of the vaccine are available to over-16s.

Meanwhile, people can also get their first, second and booster jabs at the Square Mile’s dedicated vaccination centre at Boots pharmacy at 120 Fleet Street or just over the border in Tower Hamlets at Sai Pharmacy,19 Stable Walk, Goodman’s Fields, London, E1 8EJ. Boots at Liverpool Street Station is also holding a one-day vaccination clinic on 3 February. It will be open between 9am and 6pm.

People can book an appointment at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. More information is at www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/footer/covid-19

People can help prevent the spread of Covid by meeting outside where possible, opening doors and windows to let in fresh air if meeting people inside, limiting the number of people they meet and avoiding crowded spaces.

While the guidance has recently changed, it is still advisable to wear a face covering in shops and on public transport, and keep washing your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day.

Expert warns of more whooping cough baby deaths

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard said the "biggest issue" is low vaccination rates

  • 12:06, 10 MAY 2024

Experts have warned that falling vaccine rates in pregnancy are leading to a rise in whooping cough (PA)

More babies will die from whooping cough unless vaccination rates go up to slow the spread of the infection, a leading expert has warned.

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, consultant paediatrician and chairman of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, which advises the Government, said Covid lockdowns may have impacted on the rise in cases, particularly in older children and adults.

But he said the "biggest issue" is actually low vaccination rates, particularly among pregnant women.

READ MORE: Gunman hunted after man shot outside shop in 'targeted attack'

READ MORE: Man arrested in Liverpool on suspicion of Northern Ireland murder

Figures for England show 59.3% of pregnant women between October to December 2023 were vaccinated against whooping cough, almost 16% down on the same quarter in 2016/17. London has particularly low rates, at 36.8%.

The vaccine in pregnancy helps bridge the immunity gap from when babies are born until they themselves can be vaccinated.

Data for 2022/23 shows 91.8% of children have had their whopping cough vaccines by their first birthday, with experts saying this figure also needs to be higher.

Sir Andrew told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that under-vaccination is putting "the most vulnerable, those who are too young to have been vaccinated at greatest risk".

He said the "only thing we can actually do" about rising cases is to ensure higher vaccination rates. He added: "But very importantly, for this very vulnerable group, those who are too young to be vaccinated, is the vaccination rates in pregnant women."

"Very worryingly, those have fallen from a peak of about 75% of women being vaccinated during pregnancy to under 60% today, and that's what puts these very young infants at particular risk."

He said for most of the last decade there have not been many cases of whooping cough "because we're all protected by the high vaccination rates".

But as soon as vaccination rates start to fall, "we see cases rising, the same as the situation with the measles outbreak".

He warned: "The troubling thing is that if we continue to have high rates of spread and low rates of vaccination, there will be more babies severely affected and sadly there will be more deaths."

It comes after figures released on Thursday showed five babies in England died between January and the end of March after being diagnosed with whooping cough. More than 2,700 whooping cough cases have been reported across England so far in 2024 more than three times the number recorded in the whole of last year.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) figures show 2,793 cases were reported to the end of March. That compares to 858 cases for the whole of 2023.

UKHSA consultant epidemiologist Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam said: "Whooping cough can affect people of all ages, but for very young babies it can be extremely serious. Our thoughts and condolences are with those families who have so tragically lost their baby."

In March alone, some 1,319 cases were reported, according to the data. There were 556 cases recorded in January and 918 in February.

The bacterial infection, also known as pertussis, affects the lungs and breathing tubes. Whooping cough can be called the "100-day cough" because of how long it can take to recover from, and it spreads very easily.

Between January and the end of March, 108 babies under the age of three months were diagnosed with whooping cough. Some 51% of cases during this period were among those aged 15 and older.

Health officials describe whooping cough as a "cyclical disease", which means it peaks every few years. With whooping cough this is every three to five years.

The UKHSA said the last big increase was seen in 2016, but cases dipped to very low numbers during the coronavirus pandemic which means the current peak is "overdue".

When a baby is eight weeks old they are offered the six-in-one vaccine, which includes immunisation against whooping cough. The second dose of the vaccine is offered at 12 weeks and the third is offered at 16 weeks.

When children are three years and four months they will be offered the four-in-one pre-school booster, which protects against the illness.

The first signs of whooping cough are similar to a cold, such as a runny nose and sore throat, but after about a week, the infection can develop into coughing bouts that last for a few minutes and are typically worse at night.

Young babies may also make a distinctive "whoop" or have difficulty breathing after a bout of coughing, though not all babies make this noise which means whooping cough can be hard to recognise.

Russian authorities allege drone strike on city of Voronezh

From CNN's Uliana Pavlova

Damage to a building after a drone attack in Voronezh, Russia, on June 9.

A drone attack on the southwestern Russian city of Voronezh has “lightly injured” three people, the governor, Alexander Gusev, said on Telegram on Friday.

Gusev claimed the drone had hit an empty apartment in a residential building.

“The room in the house on Belinsky Street in Voronezh, which was hit by a drone today, was empty. No one was inside at the time of the incident. As I have already said, medical assistance was provided to three lightly injured. Hospitalization is not required,” he said. “There are no dead.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov blamed Kyiv for the alleged strike in his daily briefing call with reporters, and Russia’s Investigative Committee said it had launched an investigation.

Drone strikes on Vorozneh were also  reported last month , when three sites in Russian regions on the border with Ukraine were attacked by drones.

Local officials said two drones launched strikes in the Voronezh,  Belgorod  and Kursk regions.

The drones attacked a military facility in Voronezh, according to a statement by the region's governor, Alexander Gusev.

The Chinese navy destroyer Jinan, foreground, sails alongside the Russian navy cruiser Varyag during a joint naval drills in the East China Sea on December 21, 2022.

China and Russia will again hold joint military drills this year, top generals from each side confirmed in a virtual meet Friday, according to China ’s defense ministry.

The chief of the Joint Staff Department of China’s Central Military Commission held a video meeting with Valery Gerasimov, chief of General Staff of the Russian armed forces.

The meeting was held to “exchange views on implementing the consensus of the two heads of state and deepening cooperation between the two armies,” China’s defense ministry stated.

On June 6, China and Russia held joint air force drills over the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.

Remember: It comes as bilateral trade between Russia and  China  totaled more than $93.8 billion from January to May in 2023, a 40.7% increase compared to the same period last year, data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed.

Russia has been hit by unprecedented Western sanctions since it invaded Ukraine and has been shut out of much of the global economy.

But China, which has declared “no limits” to its friendship with its northern neighbor, has thrown the Kremlin an economic lifeline, tempering the impact of its banishment from the global financial system.

China — which  views Russia as a key partner  and counterbalance amid its own rising tensions with the West — has refused to condemn Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine or call for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine’s territory, even as millions have been displaced and tens of thousands killed in the Kremlin’s unprovoked onslaught into the country.

Ukraine says eastern front still "epicenter" of fighting

From CNN’s Olga Voitovych and Jo Shelley

Ukrainian soldiers fire at the Russian air target on the frontline near Bakhmut, in the Donetsk region, Ukraine, on June 5.

The front line in eastern Ukraine is still the “epicenter” of the fighting, a Ukrainian official said on Friday – although it’s “tense” on all fronts.

Hanna Maliar, Ukraine’s deputy defense minister, said on Telegram: “The situation is tense in all parts of the front line. The east is the epicenter… heavy fighting continues,” she wrote.

Maliar said that Ukrainian troops were “engaged in active combat” around the embattled city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, leaving Russia on the defensive, “pulling together reserves and trying to hold its positions.”

Maliar's statement comes after a Kremlin-backed official in the  Zaporizhzhia region told Russian state media that there is “fierce fighting” on Ukraine’s southern front as Kyiv’s troops continue to probe Russian defenses.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces are making new attempts to attack in different parts of the front. Our troops are doing everything possible to prevent a breakthrough deep into the defense line,” Vladimir Rogov told RIA Novosti.

Is a Ukrainian offensive underway south of Zaporizhzhia?

From CNN's Andrew Carey

Since the start of the week, even as attention has focused on the aftermath of the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam, it is clear that Ukrainian forces have stepped up activities along the frontline to the south east of the city of Zaporizhzhia. But it is still too early to get a true picture of what is unfolding and the extent to which Ukraine really has its foot to the floor and is attempting a major push forward .

On Thursday, the Russian defense ministry's Telegram channel quoted Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu as saying Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade had made four attempts to break through Russian lines with up to 1,500 people and 150 armored vehicles.

The attacks had been repelled, Shoigu said, adding that Ukrainian forces had suffered significant losses of both soldiers and arms. The ministry released a drone video purportedly showing a series of strikes on Ukrainian tanks during the same clash.

By contrast, on Friday morning, Semyon Pegov – among the most widely read of a number of Russian journalists and propagandists covering the war, often grouped together as Russia’s ‘military bloggers’ – reported that Ukraine’s armed forces had made gains south of Orikhiv towards the town of Tokmak in Russian-held territory. The situation facing Russian forces was very serious, he said.

Attention has focused on this part of the front line for months, so stepped up Ukrainian activity there is no surprise. Breaking Russia’s land-bridge to Crimea, by rolling back Russian forces to the Sea of Azov, is clearly a central military objective for Ukraine. Tokmak lies on the road to Melitopol, one of three large cities under Russian control -- the others being Berdiansk and Mariupol -- that lie on the coast.

Ukrainian officials have said very little about how things are going. In his address Thursday evening, President Volodymyr Zelensky described “very tough battles.” He added: “There is a result, and I am grateful to everyone who ensure the result!” though it is quite possible he was referring to fighting around Bakhmut, which lies along a very different part of the front line, and where Ukrainian forces have made limited gains recently.

Another Russian military blogger writing on Telegram, Alexander Kots, has sought to frame Ukraine’s moves in the Zaporizhzhia region since the start of the week as a ‘Blitzkrieg’ attempt that has failed.

Vladimir Rogov, a local Russian-installed leader, while also reporting Ukraine suffering “heavy losses” in “fierce fighting,” urged caution too.

“The enemy has not yet engaged its main reserves in our direction. Everything is just beginning,” he wrote on Telegram.

CNN cannot independently verify claims made by Russian officials or those of well-sourced Russian military bloggers. But a local Ukrainian commander leading troops along the same front line rejected the suggestion Ukraine had begun its big attempt to recapture territory.

Instead, the commander characterized the pushes as “reconnaissance in force” – operations designed to probe the enemy’s defenses for weak spots and to test its combat readiness.

CNN's Sam Kiley and Olha Konovalova contributed to this post.

"Everything is just beginning," Kremlin-backed official says as Ukraine probes Russian defences in the south

There is “fierce fighting” on Ukraine’s southern front as Kyiv’s troops continue to probe Russian defenses, a Kremlin-backed official in the  Zaporizhzhia region has told Russian state media.

Rogov – who described what was happening as a “counteroffensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces” – warned in separate comments on Telegram: “Everything is just beginning."

The Ukrainians have “not yet engaged its main reserves” in the fight there, he said.

Kyiv has repeatedly said that the start of any large-scale counteroffensive  will not be announced and has not commented on any moves on the southern front overnight.

In another Telegram post on Friday morning, Rogov claimed that Russian units had thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to push back Russian troops near Orikhiv, about 40 miles southeast of Zaporizhzhia.

CNN is unable to verify the battlefield account and there is little, if any, independent reporting from the front lines.

Russia’s ministry of defense reported heavy fighting in southern and eastern Ukraine in its update on Friday morning.

Kherson floodwater levels fall following dam collapse, official says

From CNN's Olga Voitovych

Volunteers evacuate residents from a flooded area in Kherson on Thursday.

Water levels in the flooded area of the Kherson region have dropped overnight, according to a local Ukrainian commander.

"On average, the water level on the west bank [of the Dnipro River] is 5.38 meters (17.7 feet), and in Kherson city it is 5.35 meters. We can already see that the water has dropped by 20 centimeters (7.8 inches) overnight," said Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson region military administration, on Telegram Friday.

Prokudin reiterated calls for affected residents to flee for safety.

“If you are in the flood zone, leave immediately. To wait there is not an option, do not put yourself in danger. After the evacuation, you will be provided with everything you need,” he said. “The only thing we lack is time. 24 hours a day is not enough to solve all the issues.”

He added his team had received more than 400 unanswered calls in nine hours, but vowed to call everyone back.

Update on extent of flooding and rescue, according to Prokudin:

  • 3,624 houses in 32 settlements of the Kherson region have been flooded
  • 2,352 people have been evacuated
  • 550 animals have been evacuated

Crimean Tatars have a history of persecution. This soldier is fighting to push Russia out of Ukraine

From CNN's Andrew Carey and Yulia Kesaieva

When Viktor Shevchenko was called forward to receive his medal from President Volodymyr Zelensky at a special ceremony in Kyiv earlier this year, his appearance seemed to come as a surprise to the  Ukrainian  leader.

It was not the neck gaiter Shevchenko was wearing, pulled up to cover his nose and mouth, though that certainly made him stand out from the rest of the two dozen men present. Instead, it was his darker skin tone, dark brown eyes and jet-black hair.

“Are you really Viktor Shevchenko, or are you collecting a medal on behalf of someone else?” Zelensky asked.

Shevchenko laughed as he recalled the episode in Kyiv, and said the president was apologetic as soon as the penny dropped.

The history of the Crimean Tatars has taught them to tread carefully. Periods of persecution and exodus, mainly at Russian hands, have characterized the Muslim ethnic minority’s story from at least as far back as 1783, when Russian Empress Catherine the Great annexed Crimea after wresting it from the Ottoman empire.

Evacuees under Russian fire in flooded areas of Kherson, officials say. Catch up here on the latest

From CNN staff

Ukrainian military personnel help an elderly woman to evacuate from a flooded area of Kherson on June 8.

Russia continues shelling flooded areas in Kherson, including evacuation points, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday.

He said Russian forces "have completely abandoned people on the left bank of Kherson region to their fate," days after the collapse of Nova Kakhovka dam .

Rescuers are also facing resource challenges  while carrying out evacuations in Ukrainian-controlled Kherson due to the scale of the flooding, an emergency services officer told CNN.

Here are other key developments in Russia's war in Ukraine:

  • Evacuations ongoing: At least 2,339 people, including 120 children, have been evacuated from flooded areas following the dam collapse, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs. Zelensky said all levels of government and local authorities have been working nonstop to save as many people as they can. But the evacuations have been hindered by continued Russian shelling as well as a shortage of resources, officials said. Earlier Thursday, local officials said at least  nine people had been injured  by shelling as civilians  evacuate Kherson city .
  • Landmines danger:  The collapse of the dam has  displaced landmines  in the region, the head of the Red Cross Weapons Contamination Program told CNN. Landmines “in the water, on the surface, [and] buried under the ground” in the area flooded by water have “shifted location,” Erik Tollefsen said. The marking and mapping systems used by charities and NGOs to detect and locate landmines are no longer accurate, as so many landmines have moved in the water.
  • Nuclear plant impact: Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is still able to pump water from the Kakhovka reservoir following the dam collapse, even though water levels have reached the point where it was previously estimated pumps wouldn't be able to operate, according to the UN nuclear watchdog. The plant, which is occupied by Russian forces, lies upstream from the collapsed dam.
  • Civilian casualties:  Ukraine's central city of Uman was hit by a missile attack on Thursday, according to Ihor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy region’s military administration. “We have two hits: on an industrial facility and a car wash. In the second case, a fire broke out as a result of the hit,” he said. Eight people were injured, two seriously, Taburets said, citing preliminary information.
  • Russian resistance:  Ukrainian forces have suffered losses  in heavy equipment and soldiers as they met greater-than-expected resistance in their first attempt to breach Russian lines in the east of the country in recent days, two senior US officials tell CNN. One US official described the losses — which include US-supplied MRAP armored personnel vehicles — as "significant."
  • Eastern advances:  Troops are making progress and  continue to advance in the Bakhmut area  in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military said Thursday. “The defensive operation continues, the enemy is trying to stop our forces but is getting beaten,“ the commander of Ukrainian Land Forces Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi said  in a Telegram post . He shared a video, purportedly showing soldiers of the 77th Air Assault Brigade destroying a Russian tank.
  • US and UK reaffirm support:  US President Joe Biden and his British counterpart, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak,  touted their "unwavering support"  for Ukraine and shared condemnation of Moscow's "brutal aggression" as they  met in Washington, DC,  Thursday. Biden said he  believes the US will have the funding  necessary to support Ukraine against Russia for as long as it takes. Biden said he's confident in the continued funding despite what you hear from "some voices today on Capitol Hill," referring to lawmakers who have expressed skepticism about US aid to Kyiv.

Russians "even shelling evacuation points" in flooded areas, Zelensky claims

From CNN's Yulia Kesaieva and Mohammed Tawfeeq

Volodymyr Zelensky chairs a regional administration session in Kherson, Ukraine, on June 8.

Russian forces are maintaining attacks on flooded areas of Kherson, including evacuation points, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said during his nightly address on Thursday.

"They continue to shell Kherson and the communities of the region, which have already been flooded by terrorists. They are even shelling evacuation points, which is a manifestation of evil that perhaps no terrorists in the world, except for Russian ones, have ever done," Zelensky said.

Ukrainian officials said earlier at least nine people were wounded by shelling in the southern region as thousands flee from floodwaters brought by the collapse of a major dam .

At least 2,339 people have been evacuated, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs. Zelensky said earlier that all levels of government and local authorities have been working nonstop to save as many people as they can. But the evacuations have been hindered by continued Russian shelling as well has a shortage of resources, officials said.

In his address Thursday, Zelensky said Russian forces "have completely abandoned people on the left bank of Kherson region to their fate."

"The catastrophe has been expanding there for two days now. And this is also an absolutely conscious choice of the Russian leadership," Zelensky said, claiming Moscow is trying "to further aggravate the situation they have caused with their ecocide."

"This is absolutely deliberate," he said.

Remember: It's not yet clear whether the dam collapsed because it was deliberately targeted or if the breach could have been caused by structural failure. Both Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the collapse.
