Flights to and from the UK disrupted by winter weather
Freezing temperatures and snowfall lead to cancellations for flights to and from the UK.
Freezing weather in northern Europe is causing major travel disruption in some countries, including the UK, where heavy snow over the weekend led to delays and cancellations at airports and on public transport.
Runways at Manchester Airport were shut on Saturday, followed by closures and flight cancellations at London’s Heathrow , Gatwick and Stansted airports on Sunday night and into Monday morning.
Disruption continued into Wednesday, with at least 75 cancelled flights to and from London’s airports affecting more than 10,000 passengers, according to The Independent.
British Airways flights to and from Heathrow were particularly affected due to airport mandated reductions, with at least 14 departing flights cancelled and 11 arrivals cancelled.
Are flights to and from the UK still affected by snow?
A yellow weather warning, indicating snow, ice and difficult travel conditions, was in place for southeast England (including London), parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland until Tuesday morning.
Gatwick Airport tweeted that while the airport is open and flights are operating, freezing weather will cause delays and cancellations for the rest of the day.
They advise passengers to check the status of their flights with their airline before travelling to the airport.

According to British Airways, Heathrow Airport mandated a reduction in flights on December 11 and 12 due to weather conditions and Air Traffic Control restrictions.
As the London airport is the primary hub for the UK’s national carrier, many BA flights were disrupted.
“Like all airlines operating to or from London, our schedule has been affected by continuing adverse winter weather conditions,” the airline states.

To minimise disruption, BA is using larger aircraft, where possible, to enable as many customers to travel as possible. They are also offering customers booked on short-haul flights from London, still operating, the option to move to a later date within the next 14 days free of charge via their website.

The UK is set to see warmer temperatures for a second weekend in a row, after the pleasant Bank Holiday weekend.
And weather predictions have said June could have three heatwaves and reach temperatures of 30°C as the UK summer weather starts to heat up.
The mercury is set to hit up to 20°C in some areas this weekend, with sunny skies moving in across the British Isles.
A Met Office forecaster said: ‘It stays unsettled now, but by the weekend, the weather will become more settled as high pressure builds.
‘It will be a dry weekend with spells of warm sunshine, and this fair weather is likely to continue for a few days into the following week.
‘From June 8 to 22, temperatures have more chance of being above the average at this time of year.’
Where will it be hot this weekend?
Areas set to see higher temperatures this weekend range from the coastal cities of Brighton and Cardiff to London and Manchester.
London is expected to see temperatures of 18°C on Saturday, increasing to 21°C on Sunday.
Further north, Manchester will see temperatures between 18-19°C on Saturday and Sunday; with York reaching 21C and Edinburgh seeing a steady 19°C paired with sunny skies.
Brighton will see 17-19°C; and Bristol will reach 22°C on Sunday. Exeter will see 21°C on both Saturday and Sunday, with Cardiff forecast to reach 19°C on Saturday, followed by a balmy 21°C on Sunday.
What is the long-range forecast for June?
Even as heat waves are predicted for June, this summer is expected to be one of the wettest on record.
With 50 days of rain predicted in just three months, it come second to just the summer of 1912 when the country was plagued by 55 days of rain.
In its long-range forecast, the Met said: ‘The chances of a wetter-than-average period are higher than a drier-than-average one.
‘Rainfall at this time of year has a greater risk of localised heavy downpours and thunderstorms.’
Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: ‘June looks settled to start with and is forecast several fine spells, with bursts of very warm weather and potentially reaching 30°C for the first time this year.
‘High levels of background warmth and warm sea surface temperatures provide added fuel for hot spells, but also rain at times.’

Will there be a heatwave in June? The latest Met Office forecast revealed
31 May 2024, 16:30
By Tiasha Debray
Get your sunscreen ready because the UK is set to be hit by three heatwaves in June according to a weather forecast, silencing the 50 days of rain rumours.
Listen to this article
If you’re wondering, 'when is the next heatwave?" then look no further as June is set to bring three heatwaves to the UK.
The Met Office have predicted that temperatures are set to be between 30C–33C, meaning we could be in for the hottest year on record.
However there are differing opinions, as reports of 50 days of rain have plagued the headlines in the past days. Luckily for sun lovers The Met Office have rubbished these claims, meaning we could still have a chance of experiencing some warm temperatures.

But when is next heatwave in the UK and what is the weather in June meant to be like?
When is the next heatwave UK 2024?
The Met Office have predicted that June could see temperatures hotter than usual. One forecaster revealed they expect the heat to hit from the 8th of June 8th to the 22nd of June, where "temperatures have more chance of being above the average at this time of year."
Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at the British Weather Services spoke to Birmingham Live , confirming temperatures could soar "well into the 30s" as we head "in the right direction" for a heatwave.
"I would suggest we will share in some of that in the latter stage of May, and into June and July. We will see climbing temperatures well into the 30s in the prone areas. That is the expectation," Jim said.

Will there be a heatwave in June?
While it has not been officially confirmed that there will be a heatwave in June, forecasters have predicted that temperatures are set to soar.
According to The Weather Outlook, London is looking at a weather forecast of 30C+ in June.
Forecaster Brian Gaze told Express : "June looks settled to start with and is forecast several fine spells, with bursts of very warm weather and potentially reaching 30C for the first time this year. High levels of background warmth and warm sea surface temperatures provide added fuel for hot spells, but also rain at times."
What does the UK’s ‘50 days of rain’ weather forecast mean?
Will this be the wettest summer the UK has had? Almost. Even though heatwave after heatwave will be rolling through the country, this summer is also set to be the second wettest summer ever recorded.
The '50 days of rain' forecast is exactly what it sounds like, the weather forecast is predicting 50 days of rain in just three months.
However The Met Office have clarified reports of a summer of rain, telling Yahoo : "It’s not possible to forecast a specific number of days of rain in the UK for a whole season."
Before going on to add: "As is typical for forecasts made at this time of year, signals for prevailing weather patterns over the UK during summer are relatively weak. However, signals show the chances of a wet or dry summer are fairly balanced. Whilst rainfall signals are limited, some spells of unsettled weather can be expected."

Met Office shuts down reports UK is set for 50 days of rain this summer
A met office spokesperson addressed the worrying weather reports.
Rhiannon Ingle
I'm sure many Brits are thinking the exact same thing right about now: How on earth are we nearly in June and it's still chucking it down?
Well, I know I am at least.
May should be the month of beer garden antics, garden BBQ motives and a whole bunch of soaking in the sun.
However, many of us here in the UK have been severely let down by the less than lovely weather .
Just yesterday (28 May), a number of news outlets suggested that this summer may end up being one of the wettest on record.
However, following all the drizzle, the Met Office has had to come forward to shut down reports that the UK is reportedly set for 50 days of rain this summer.
A spokesperson told Tyla: "It is not possible to forecast a specific number of days of rain for the whole of summer.
"When looking at forecasts beyond five days into the future, the chaotic nature of the atmosphere starts to come into play - small events currently over the Atlantic can have potentially significant impacts on our weather in the UK in several days' or weeks' time."
Because of this, the Met Office explains, while it can still forecast the 'general feel' of the weather to a relatively high level of accuracy using its ensemble models, it becomes harder to offer local detail to as high a level of accuracy as the shorter range forecasts.
"For this reason," the spokesperson continued. "Longer range forecast tend to be for the average conditions over the UK as a whole. Regional deviations from the UK average can occur."
The Met Office also noted that it measures and relates rainfall over months and seasons to average using accumulation (mm) not using days with rain/days of rainfall over a certain threshold as has been done in the original reports claiming we were set for 50 days of rain this summer.
"As is typical for forecasts made at this time of year, signals for prevailing weather patterns over the UK during summer are relatively weak. However, signals show the chances of a wet or dry summer are fairly balanced," the spokesperson added.
So, while rainfall signals are limited, some spells of unsettled weather can be expected.
"As is typical for the time of year, these spells are likely to see heavy downpours and thunderstorms for some regions," the Met Office finished up.
Well, it seems like it's not all doom and gloom then!

Severe weather could hamper your travel, outdoor plans for Memorial Day weekend
A series of storms is forecast to unleash dangerous weather conditions across the central and eastern U.S. through Memorial Day weekend, likely snarling traffic and delaying flights during one of busiest travel periods of the year .
Friday's weather remained relatively calm throughout the day in many regions, which boasted comfortable temperatures for an early start to the holiday weekend. But weather advisories were in effect in several areas of the Midwest, where a handful of storms barreled through Friday morning.
Those storms brought winds as high as 70 mph and heavy rain Friday to small towns still reeling from powerful winds, rain and tornadoes from earlier in the week, including Greenfield, Iowa, where a twister killed four people , injured 35 others and damaged more than 150 homes on Tuesday.
In southwest Oklahoma, at least one tornado touched down late Thursday, the weather service said. Repair efforts were underway Friday after multiple houses were damaged, including one that had its roof blown off, according to local media reports. In Nebraska, softball-sized hail fell as strong winds uprooted trees and tangled power lines. As of Friday morning, over 25,000 homes and businesses were without power across Iowa and Nebraska, according to a USA TODAY outage tracker .
Meteorologists in the weather service's Quad Cities office on Friday warned of high winds and the potential formation of tornadoes in Iowa and Illinois throughout the day.
"An arcing line of severe storms continues to move east at 60 mph this AM. The primary threats are damaging winds, with embedded tornadoes possible in northwest IL," the weather service said. "After this line moves out, WE ARE NOT DONE! More strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon."
A corridor stretching from northeastern Texas and the Tennessee Valley to Missouri and Illinois – where more than 45 million people live – faces the greatest risk of floods, damaging winds and possible tornadoes on Friday, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center . The cities in the crosshairs of the various storms include Dallas, Chicago, Indianapolis, Memphis and Milwaukee. Flood watches and warnings were in effect throughout eastern Arkansas, northern Mississippi and western Tennessee, where 2-3 inches of rain had fallen .
The persistent threat of severe weather comes on the heels of deadly storms that, since last week, have ravaged the Plains and Midwest, especially the Texas cities of Houston and Temple , and Greenfield, Iowa . Over the last week, at least nine deaths, dozens of injuries and millions of dollars in damages have been tied to the nonstop severe weather outbreak.
Weekend forecast: Plains, Midwest face unrelenting storms
Through the holiday weekend, the Plains and Midwest regions, which for the last several weeks have been battered by potent and deadly storms , will face a constant threat of tornadoes .
Meteorologists forecast "several strong to violent tornadoes, extreme hail, and corridors of widespread wind damage" throughout the central and southern Plains on Saturday. A moderate risk of severe storms – a 4 on a scale of 5 – is concentrated over Kansas and Oklahoma, with Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Wichita being the cities in the threat zone.
The storms are forecast to shift northeast on Sunday, bringing severe thunderstorms over parts of eastern Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. A much larger area of the Midwest and south-central U.S. is in the path of the storm system, too. By Monday, meteorologists expect the poor weather to expand into the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.
"Thunderstorms this weekend will not only threaten outdoor events such as weddings, barbeques and camping trips, but they can be dangerous across the Great Plains to the East Coast," according to AccuWeather .
Over 43 million people to travel during stormy holiday weekend
With the unofficial start to summer meeting a ferocious stretch of severe weather, travelers across the central and eastern U.S. may experience delays on the roads and at airports.
Nearly 44 million people will travel 50 miles or more over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is from Friday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, according to projections from The American Automobile Association. Over 38 million people will travel by car, while more than 3.5 million will take flights.
"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."
On Thursday, storms forced officials to temporarily ground flights at New York City's two major airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Hundreds of flights were delayed across the mid-Atlantic and New England, including at airports in Boston, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Cleanup, recovery underway in the aftermath of devastating storms
Across the central U.S., construction crews, utility workers, emergency responders and residents worked to clear the immense wreckage left in the wake of recent storms.
In Greenfield, Iowa, dozens of volunteers joined authorities from around the state to assist in the recovery after the town was decimated Tuesday afternoon by a powerful tornado. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said at the news conference Thursday that the response has been remarkable. "I was on the ground yesterday and I can't even tell you the amount of debris that has been collected and hauled off," she said.
In Houston, authorities worked to repair buildings that were damaged by storms that barreled through the city on May 16, killing eight people and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses, most of which has been restored this week. The city's emergency management office said several roads will be closed through the weekend as waste management workers continue collecting storm debris.
In Temple, a city about 60 miles north of Austin, emergency responders were clearing downed trees, piles of wreckage and restoring power following a tornado that damaged homes and left several people with minor injuries on Wednesday. In Bell County, which encompasses Temple, more than 25,000 utility customers were without power on Friday, according to a USA TODAY outage tracker .
