You are here, trek bicycle plans to ‘right size’ with 10% cuts to spending.

BOULDER, Colo. (BRAIN) — Trek Bicycle president John Burke has told company leaders that he has decided to “right size” the company by 10% in response to slow sales and high inventory levels. But he says the company's overall strategy remains unchanged.

In an internal memo Burke sent to executives recently, he said details of the cuts would be announced Friday.  He said in addition to a 10% cut in spending, Trek would substantially reduce its stock keeping units (SKUs), saying Trek’s model year 2026 SKUs will be 40% lower than model year 2024. 

“These are turbulent times in our business,” Burke began in a confidential Company Update document that Burke sent internally, which BRAIN has obtained.

He went on to say the global bike market is “in chaos,” with high inventory levels at wholesale and retail levels, leading to “significant and continued” discounting. He said retail sales were also below Trek forecasts, including in January and February this year. He said the company had not hit its monthly sales goals for the past 15 months. 

He said the situation left him with three options: simply hope for better days ahead, continue to make cuts around the edges, or “right size our business to the realities of the marketplace.” He said he decided to take the third route.

He said Trek would reduce overall spending by 10% with cuts to programs and positions, with decisions made on or before March 8. Trek will also simplify its product lines and reduce inventory levels; He said model year 2026 inventory will be 20% lower, measured in days in stock, than they were before the pandemic bike boom. 

However, Burke said Trek’s overall strategy has not changed and the brand’s “flywheel” is “spot on.”

The Trek news comes amid many cuts across the independent bicycle channel and related businesses in the past year, including cuts at Vista Outdoor , HLC , Rad Power, REI , Zwift, QBP, The Pro’s Closet and Signa Sports United (owner of WiggleCRC and other e-commerce brands).

Once within 75M the Vehicles location is depicted in both distance behind and distance to either side, indicating preparation for a potential pass. Once the vehicle completes a pass, an audible alert indicates the pass and the vehicle drops off the screen. Helps cars see you. The Trek Accessory App also gives the ability to turn on a connected Trek CarBack Rear bike Light, all from the App screen. The CarBack Radar offers Daytime Running Light Performance that can be seen from up to 2km during the day to help a cyclist be more visible on the road. Audible and Visual Alerts You can choose the best way to receive alerts – Alerts will be shown visually on screen as well as an audio alert when a detected rear approaching vehicle is first detected, and again when it passes. City OKs new Moscow Mountain trails

Moscow Mountain could have a new 2-mile system of bike trails in two years thanks to a local volunteer group and a Tuesday decision from the Moscow City Council.

The Moscow Area Mountain Bike Association is proposing to build and maintain the trail system on the mountain near the intersection of Moscow Mountain Road and Rock Creek Road.

MAMBA is a local nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that develops, maintains and promotes the use of more than 60 miles of non-motorized trails on and around the Moscow Mountain area.

The group wants to construct the trails on 20 acres of land that was donated to the city in 1941 by Harry and Nina Powell. It is currently undeveloped and not being managed for recreational purposes.

MAMBA anticipates construction will cost $10,000. It has applied for a grant from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation to fund the project, and asked the city to provide a matching $5,000. The city approved the match along with a license agreement for the trail system.

MAMBA anticipates construction to start this spring and for the trails to open in May 2025.

The nonprofit says this new trail system will discourage unauthorized user-created trails, improve recreational activity in the area and appease those who want more advanced mountain bike trails.

Councilor Sandra Kelly said she believes this project will help with the city’s tourism, and she appreciates that MAMBA will maintain the trails.

Councilor Gina Taruscio also praised MAMBA’s ability to tackle a project like this.

“The reputation you guys have precedes you and I really think this is a ridiculous no-brainer,” Taruscio said.

In other business, the council approved an appeal that will allow The Jubilee School Montessori in Eastside Marketplace to have a day care for children ages 3 to 5.

City staff previously determined the proposal did not meet the license requirements because the facility did not have a fenced outdoor play area adjacent to the day care.

Malia Mason, director of The Jubilee School Montessori, approached the council to appeal the denial. She said the school wants to incorporate 3- to 6-year-old children into its school program, but the city requires a day care license for 3-year-olds.

The school plans to create an outdoor play area in the future. There is currently an outdoor space behind the building. Mason also said that 3- to 4-year-olds would not use the outdoor area because they are only at the facility for three hours in the morning.

There was much debate about this request, particularly about whether the school’s unique education model justified waiving the day care rule regarding play areas. The motion to approve the license passed 4-2.

Also on Tuesday, the council approved a grant request to the Idaho Parks and Recreation to upgrade Lola Clyde Park by adding parking, frontage improvements and an internal pathway system.

Water transportation has become another sector for the eco-friendly improvements the Moscow government is implementing. And it means business. On July 15, 2021, on the dock of Moscow’s ‘Zaryadye’ park, mayor Sergey Sobyanin was shown the first model of the upcoming river cruise boat.

The model of the electrical boat with panoramic windows measures 22 meters in length. The river tram - as Muscovites call them - has a passenger capacity of 42, including two disabled seats. The trams will also get cutting edge info panels, USB docking stations, Wi-Fi, spaces for scooters and bicycles, as well as chairs and desks for working on the go. The boats will be available all year round, according to ‘Mosgortrans’, the regional transport agency. 

Passengers will be able to pay with their ‘Troika’ public transport card, credit cards or bank cards. 

The main clientele targeted are people living in Moscow’s river districts - the upcoming trams will shorten their travel time in comparison to buses and other transportation by five times, Mosgortrans stated. 

As the river trams are being rolled out, Moscow docks will also see mini-stations, some of which will also be outfitted with charging docks for speed-charging the boats.  

Moscow is set to announce the start of the tender for construction and supply in September 2021. The first trams are scheduled to launch in June 2022 on two routes - from Kievskaya Station, through Moscow City, into Fili; and from ZIL to Pechatniki. 

“Two full-scale routes will be created in 2022-2023, serviced by 20 river trams and a number of river stations. We’ll continue to develop them further if they prove to be popular with the citizens,” the Moscow mayor said .

Rivian (RIVN) reaffirms Georgia EV plant commitment as state presses for answers

Rivian (RIVN) is still planning to build electric vehicles in Georgia, just not as soon as expected. After delaying construction, Rivian reaffirmed its commitment to an EV manufacturing plant in GA.

After unveiling the R2 last month, a smaller and more affordable electric SUV, Rivian announced it would begin production at its Normal, IL facility rather than its new $5B GA plant.

Rivian said the move would save $2.25 billion as the EV maker works to turn a profit. More importantly, CEO RJ Scaringe said it will help speed up the R2’s launch. Rivian is expected to begin R2 production in the first half of 2026.

However, not everyone is happy about the move. Although Rivian said Georgia remains “an extremely important part of its strategy to scale production of R2 and R3,” the state wants more answers.

On March 22, the Joint Development Authority (JDA) and the State of Georgia sent a letter to Rivian stating several concerns.

The letter stated that “this change in plans will require Rivian to promptly address issues,” like site conditions and safety. According to The Covington News , the letter outlined a “summary of near-term items that need to be addressed expeditiously.” At the end, it asked for “monthly updates” going forward.

Rivian reaffirms GA EV plant commitment

A response letter signed by Rivian’s chief policy officer and returned on April 18 reaffirmed the EV maker’s commitment to GA and its new manufacturing plant.

The letter stated, “Rivian further remains committed to complying with all federal and state regulations with respect to environmental matters and is further committed to ongoing coordination with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.”

Although vertical construction is not expected to begin for some time, Hoffman confirmed that Rivian will continue to work to maintain the site.

“Rivian’s overall goal is to use the pause to prepare the Project to go vertical when the pause is lifted,” the company’s response read.

Rivian agreed to provide “continuous communication and transparency” as the project evolves. “Rivian will continue to provide timely updates to our partners and the community during the pause and as we approach start of construction.”

Less than 24 hours after launching, Scaringe revealed the R2 generated over 68,000 reservations.

The EV maker officially shut down production in Normal earlier this month as it prepares for upgrades to cut costs and improve efficiency. These improvements are not directly related to R2 but could help with future production.

Scaringe previously said Rivian expects “ideally over a million units of demand across the globe.” He added, “That means we will have at least two plants producing the vehicle.”
