The 20 best holiday destinations in May

By Faith Strickland and Laura Chubb

Dodecanese Islands Greece

Can you almost taste it – Summer ’s citrusy zing in May’s creeping warmth and brightening light? May is a perfect time to travel; many holiday destinations are at their peak, and the sense of the upcoming new season is in the air.

Europe will be emerging into summer proper in 2024, everywhere from Tuscan hilltop towns to golden Grecian beaches – and, if you’re sustainably-minded, you can reach most of these dreamy destinations by train . And further afield, corners of Africa , the Caribbean and Canada will peak as well. So why wait a minute longer? It’s high time you hit the road. These are our favourite holiday destinations in May for sun, adventures and sightseeing.

Algarve Portugal

1. Algarve, Portugal

Temperature in May: 23°C high; 18°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 55 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

Before you dismiss the Algarve – look between the tourist resorts and there is a quieter, more peaceful side to this coast. Not to mention some of the most fantastic beaches in Europe. In May the weather's hotting up but it's not yet too busy. Stay at the wonderful Bela Vista Hotel with an amazing spa on Praia da Rocha; and explore the secluded town of Castro Marim . Yes, the area is synonymous with beach holidays – but venture off the beaten track for quiet hillside retreats set in olive groves, such as Casa Arte, or Fazenda Nova , a quaint country house.

Sustainable travel tip: Portugal has been hit especially hard in our tough economic times, and spending your entire holiday in the Algarve’s seaside resorts doesn’t do much to help. But making time to explore inland hiking routes and family-owned B&Bs isn’t just good for local business, it’s good for your holiday, too. The 185-mile Via Algarviana traverses the region’s hills and rural villages from east to west, with plenty of lovely places to stay along the way (try Casa do Lavrador in Furnazinhas, where breakfast comprises a heavenly spread of homemade preserves, breads and cheeses).

Where to stay: Pine Cliffs Hotel , a restorative retreat stretching across 178 acres with eight swimming pools, is probably bigger than any hotel you’ll have been to before. It’s the kind of place where you can hole up for a week without having to get back in the hot hire car. For grandeur, Bela Vista – a prominent castle-like building on the beach – is stunning. If you're travelling with little ones, Casa Olhão is private villa set up to sleep four (with the option to have a baby bed or cot provided), and has a spacious upstairs kitchen, comfortable outdoor dining terrace and a wonderful rooftop. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Algarve .

Sicily Italy

2. Sicily, Italy

Temperature in May: 22°C high; 12°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 55 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

The football at the toe of Italy ’s boot, the Mediterranean’s largest island is a reliably sunny way to kick off an early summer. There’s scalded volcano country and fertile wine land, Greek temples and Roman ruins. You can wander the shady lanes of baroque hill towns such as Ragusa, then stroll sun-soaked plazas in the coastal city of Syracuse. Come May, the countryside blooms, and the water lapping the beaches is warm. Bring your towel with you when you go to lunch in the old fishing village of Porto Palo – Sicily ’s prettiest secluded cove, Capparrina di Mare, is just a little further west.

Sustainable travel tip: Cool fact: you can travel to Sicily by rail, aboard an InterCity train that gets loaded onto a ferry for the seafaring part of the journey. Arrive in Paris via Eurostar, then take the overnight Thello sleeper to Milan. From here, you can catch an InterCity sleeper service to several Sicilian destinations: Messina, Catania, Siracuse or Palermo (choosing Messina means you’ll disembark in time for lunch). Sound complicated? Railbookers can deal with the details.

Where to stay: Time hits differently at the milky-stoned Il San Corrado , amid the olive groves and light-filled courtyards once owned by an Italian prince. Meanwhile opulent marble bathrooms and silky, wallpapered rooms spill onto terraces doused in golden sunlight at Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo . If you're trip is inspired by The White Lotus , you can book into the exact hotel – San Domenico Palace on the north-east coast – or the palazzo – Villa Tasca in Palermo – featured in the hit show. For more, see our edit of the best hotels in Sicily .

Village of Peratallada in Costa Brava Spain

3. Catalonia, Spain

Temperature in May: 20°C high; 12°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 15 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

There’s more to Catalonia than Barcelona – though May is an excellent time to explore the provincial capital, with hot days, clear skies and fewer folks ahead of the summer squeeze. Further north, Girona ’s old quarter is medieval enough to have starred in Game of Thrones . Plus, it’s the site of the nation’s greatest dining experience: El Celler De Can Roca hasn’t been hailed the world’s best restaurant twice by chance. Then head down to the Costa Brava, not the resort-y part, but the section where stone-cut towns such as Peratallada and Pals pack honey-hued charm, and beach-side Begur’s Cuban-style mansions house gorgeous, independent hotels. From here, it’s a short, winding drive to Aiguablava, this Costa’s most perfect patch of sand, in a Caribbean-blue bay. In May, you might just find a vacancy, before it feels like the most coveted sunbathing spot in Spain .

Sustainable travel tip: You can travel from London to Barcelona and Girona by train within a day. Once you’ve arrived in Paris on the Eurostar, board a high-speed TGV Duplex for Barcelona (about 7.5 hours) or Girona (seven hours).

Where to stay: Hotel Nord 1901 places you in prime position for seeing the sights, just a five-minute walk away from the cathedral. Or, if you wish to be amongst it all, Barcelona's hottest hotel The Hoxton Poblenou is a great option for exploring a new part of the city.

Malta

Temperature in May: 24°C high; 15°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 3 hours 10 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Tucked away between Sicily and Tunisia, Malta has a delicious mix of European and African culture while fiercely retaining its own identity. The tiny archipelago (including Gozo) starts to warm up by May, meaning days can be spent bronzing on sandy beaches in hidden coves, swimming in turquoise lagoons, or exploring ancient ruins and quaint fishing villages. If you're a little short on time, head to Europe's smallest capital city, Valletta , for a long weekend. Maltese food is a delight, with strong Mediterranean influences which produce dishes such as pistachio cannoli or honey-glazed rabbit. There's also wine bars hidden in twisty-turny side streets and a city so antiquated you feel as though you're in a museum. All this and it's right beside the sea.

Sustainable travel tip: A couple of minutes’ walk from Valetta’s Grand Harbour, boutique hotel Locanda La Gelsomina hasn’t just sensitively restored a 500-year-old traditional Maltese building. The family-run hideaway also takes steps to reduce the not-insignificant impact of tourism on this small island, making use of solar-powered heating and rainwater collection.

Where to stay: Domus Zamittello , doubles from about £110, a restored baroque masterpiece by the bombed-out opera house, with painted coffered ceilings. Ursula Street is a favourite balconied address to walk down in Valletta, with several small palazzo hotels; try 66 Saint Paul’s to soak it all in.

Munich Germany

5. Munich, Germany

Temperature in May: 19°C high; 8°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 1 hour 50 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Can’t wait until autumn to pull on the lederhosen? May in Munich brings Springfest (or Fruhlingfest), Oktoberfest’s little sister. Expect the same risky mix of fairground rides and beer-filled steins, but smaller and less lairy crowds. The city has its own version of hygge: ‘Gemütlichkeit’. Soak it up in one of the many twinkly pub gardens, or under the vaulted ceiling of a beer cellar. Enough hops? The sun is shining on river surfers riding the Eisbach wave in the Englischen Garten – a year-round swell best left to pros. It might just be warm enough for the park’s nude section to fill up, too; this is Germany , after all.

Sustainable travel tip: Travelling from England to Munich by train is easy and fast. After arriving in Paris on the Eurostar, catch a TGV Duplex train direct to Munich, or via Stuttgart. Journey time from Paris is about six hours.

Where to stay: Housed in an early 20th-century building, with manor-house interiors (frescoes and hunting images), Hotel Excelsior exudes rustic elegance. It has 113 rooms decorated in soft pastels. The stately Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski was built in 1858 near the Bavarian State Opera in the Old Town as a symbol of modernity: now, the lobby retains its old-world glamour with wood-panelled walls and an incredible stained-glass ceiling.

Ardtornish

6. The Scottish Highlands

Temperature in May: 13°C high; 7°C low Season: spring Travel time from London: 1 hour 30 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

The Scottish Highlands are insanely beautiful year-round but in May they burst into life. The wildflowers and rhododendrons are brightfully blooming and the midges have not yet arrived to spoil the fun. There's something gloriously untamed and forgotten about The Highlands – wonderfully grand country estates such as Ardtornish are still the norm, with reams of lochs and lakes for fishing or acres of land for tramping. There's an abundance of romantic hidey-holes to forget about the rest of the world; and if you're finding May still a little chilly, a trip to a whisky distillery will soon warm you up. All this, so tantalisingly close to home.

Sustainable travel tip: Spend a night on the Caledonian Sleeper train and wake up in either outdoor adventure resort Aviemore, or the capital city of the Highlands, Inverness.

Where to stay: Glengorm Castle , a Brontë-esque pile of harmonious turrets and towers on the north coast of Mull, five miles from Tobermory, with guest cottages, flats and B&B rooms that are tweedy, toiley perfection. For a private stay, there are some incredible Airbns in this region. We love the look of this smart airship-turned-smart cabin bolthole that overlooks the Sound of Mull.

Brighton England

7. Brighton, United Kingdom

Temperature in May: 14°C high; 10°C low Season: spring Travel time from London: 1 hour by train Time difference: GMT +0

Kinky and quirky. Bohemian and burlesque. Brighton invented Britain’s seaside scene long before Margate started luring London creatives from their concrete cocoons. It’s still our coolest beach town – for proof, come in May. That’s when the Great Escape new music festival hits: what The Times calls Britain’s answer to SXSW, and Steve Lamacq claims is the music world’s Cannes. Expect a studiously obscure line-up you’re definitely not hip enough to have heard of (sample bands: Pyschedelic Porn Crumpets; Tropical F*** Storm). Also on in May is Brighton Fringe. As England’s biggest open-access arts festival, count on it to bring the weird. Plus, the sun should be peeking onto that pebble beach this time of year. Sorry, Kent Riviera: Brighton’s just better.

Sustainable travel tip: Taste Brighton’s independent (and sustainable) spirit with Brighton Food Tours : itineraries focus solely on the city’s indie producers and vendors.

Where to stay: Artist Residence Brighton . A jaunty pink door marks out the terraced property on Regency Square. Inside, the arty rooms have boldly painted walls, while the communal spaces are a bit more muted, with exposed-brick walls and vintage furniture. Or in the city’s quieter, more grown-up neighbourhood just 15 minutes by bus from Brighton’s centre, the Ginger Pig is a favourite for smart locals. For self-catered options, take a look at our list of the best Airbnbs in Brighton.

Dublin

8. Dublin, Ireland

Temperature in May: 15°C high, 6°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 1 hour 25 minutes Time difference: GMT +0

What, not for St Patrick’s Day? But Dublin isn’t all braying pub mobs. In May it makes room for brooding artistes. Its writerly sons Joyce, Yeats and Wilde all wandered these Georgian streets for inspiration, and May’s annual International Literature Festival honours the capital’s high-minded pedigree, with authors flying in from all over the globe to argue and provoke. Then embark on a literary pub crawl, and sip pints where Dublin’s greatest writers did so a century before. In May, there’ll be moderate weather, crowds and prices: a pleasant time to wander the Grand Canal, dine in restaurant/bookshop The Winding Stair, and take in the works of new Irish playwrights at the Abbey Theatre, originally co-founded by Yeats.

Sustainable travel tip: Ferries sail daily from Liverpool and Holyhead to Dublin. Travel from Holyhead and you can buy ‘rail and sail’ tickets with both Irish Ferries and Stena Line, so you needn’t bother with a car at either end.

Where to stay: The Westbury , an enduring spot on the city’s scene and the flagship of the Irish, family-run Doyle Collection. Just off the shopping hub of Grafton Street, guest rooms have been spruced up with a lighter, brighter touch, and there are killer cocktails at the glamorous Sidecar bar. Or go all-out in this luxurious three-bedroom Airbnb hideaway . For more recommendations, see our edit of the best Dublin hotels .

Tuscany and Florence Italy

9. Tuscany and Florence, Italy

Temperature in May: 23°C high; 12°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 10 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

If you weren't already head-over-heels in love with Italy, a trip to Tuscany will inevitably cast you into the deepest of adorations. The birthplace of the Italian language is crammed full of UNESCO world heritage sights, medieval country houses and ancient cities. This region isn't just a living, breathing museum though, it is also famed for its Chianti growing vines, rolling Tuscan hills, the crazily cute Cinque Terre and coastal region The Maremma . Florence , the capital, is great for a bank holiday weekend, warm enough to stroll in a sundress and devour gelato, but before the city becomes stuffy and overrun by organised tourist groups.

Sustainable travel tip: You can reach Florence by train, with a night in Milan for good measure. After arriving in Paris via Eurostar , catch a high-speed TGV train to Italy’s fashion capital (journey time: about seven hours). Next morning, a high-speed Frecciarossa train zips you to Florence in just a couple of hours.

Where to stay: Casa Iris , a thrillingly pretty guesthouse in the middle of the peninsula, is an elegant retreat in a place full of gelato-toting holidaymakers. And there’s no shortage of elegant hotels in Florence, but something about the St. Regis is extra wonderful: here, the royal treatment is for everyone. For more, see our pick of the best hotels in Tuscany .

Norwegian Fjords

10. Norwegian Fjords

Temperature in May: 16°C high; 6°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 2 hours 5 minutes Time difference: GMT +1

Cruising through the fjords is one way to do it – another is a monumental road trip, skimming cliff edges and winding through greening countryside, above blue water sparkling below. In May, wildflowers are flourishing and hiking trails are blissfully quiet; free not only of tourists, but also of summer’s irksome midges. Drive the Discovery Route from Bergen and catch spring’s blossoming apple trees at dramatic Hardangerfjord, then feel your stomach drop at the lip of flat-topped Pulpit Rock. Steady your nerves back in Bergen, where Scandi -red clapboard houses sit aside buzzy cocktail bars; No Stress prides itself on its house-made syrups and juices, and can be relied upon for a good-time throng.

Sustainable travel tip: A couple of regions in the fjords are a certified ‘Sustainable Destination’: a national labelling scheme that rewards areas deemed to be systematically preserving local culture and environment. Lyngenfjord offers outdoor adventures, visits with the Sami people and locally reared and foraged food; Lysefjord, home of Pulpit Rock, has excellent hiking routes and restaurants focused on local produce. Heart set on a cruise? Nærøyfjord can be explored onboard electric ferry Future , or the hybrid vessel Vision

Where to stay: Hotel Brosundet , a former fishing warehouse reimagined by Snøhetta, the progressive architectural outfit that designed the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in the centre of town. This place is so close to the water that some guests have been known to leap into the waves from the windows. Or for stunning views, you'll struggle to find better than this seaside Airbnb.

Dodecanese Islands Greece

11. Dodecanese Islands, Greece

Temperature in May: 23°C high; 17°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 4 hours 15 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

Think of the Greek Islands and think of whitewashed stone villages illuminated against the blue Aegean, ancient ruins and tiny little fishing villages. The Dodecanese islands, a chain of 12 larger islands ( Rhodes is the best known of them) and lots of little ones, are all these clichés and more. For a real taste of Greek life, the volcanic island of Nisyros is wonderfully welcoming and a haven for artists. Symi, half an hour from the Turkish coast, has Michelin stars and is glamorously old school, Kastellorizo inspired the likes of Pink Floyd and Patmos has incredible Byzantine architecture, or if you can't settle on one, go island hopping on the Calypso.

Sustainable travel tip: Reaching Rhodes without boarding a plane is possible, but you’ll need to be dedicated. Probably the simplest way is to take the Eurostar to Paris, followed by a TGV to Munich (seven hours), and from here the overnight Lisinski sleeper train to Zagreb. Next day, take a train to Belgrade (seven hours), and spend a night and day in the Serbian capital. An overnight train will then take you to Thessaloniki, from where you can enjoy a very scenic journey on an InterCity train to Athens (four hours). Finally, an overnight ferry sails you to Rhodes. Now, here’s the catch: the sleeper to Thessaloniki only operates mid-June to mid-September. See the brilliant Seat61.com for an alternative route that involves a second ferry and more train changes.

Where to stay: Melenos Lindos, for decorative wooden ceilings, Ottoman-inspired hand-painted tiles, raised wooden sleeping platforms with elaborate carved woodwork, and mirror frames inlaid with mother of pearl. At the terrace bar and restaurant (which serves seasonal Greek food), a vine-covered pergola is threaded with tiny lanterns. For pure, Greek Island relaxation we love this Airbnb with a private pool.

Istanbul

12. Istanbul, Turkey

Temperature in May: 22°C high; 13°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 3 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT +3

Before Turkey's blazing summer heat sets in, head to Istanbul for an easy and accessible city break from the UK . The city is a glorious mish-mash of European and Asian culture – buzzing bazaars filled with keen-to-haggle hawkers selling trinkets sit next to contemporary art galleries. Sunrise calls to prayer from glittering mosques intertwine with the sound of electronic music from boat nightclubs floating on the Bosphorus. There are countless palatial hotels to stay in; or consider Soho House 's Istanbul outpost, a little haven in this electrifying city.

Sustainable travel tip: Yes, you absolutely can travel to Istanbul by train, though it’ll take you a good four days. The route, however, is a fascinating one, in parts retracing the journey the Orient Express made back in the 1920s. Arrive in Paris on the Eurostar, then take a TGV Duplex to Munich (6.5 hours), and from here the overnight Lisinski sleeper train to Zagreb. Next day, take a train to Belgrade (seven hours), and spend the night there before travelling onwards to Sofia (11.5 hours, summer service runs direct until mid September). Explore the Bulgarian capital before the final leg, an overnight sojourn aboard the Sofia-Istanbul Express.

Where to stay: Soho House Istanbul . The restoration of this 19th-century palace in the city's coolest district is one of the London hotel group's biggest and most ambitious projects, with 120 light-flooded and serene bedrooms. Or, to escape the crowds, Six Senses Kocatas Mansion s is pure luxury (and the hotel has a boat to take you to Istanbul, should you wish). For more, see our edit of the best hotels in Istanbul .

Cairo Egypt

13. Egypt, Africa

Temperature in May: 34°C high; 24°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 4 hours 40 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

Rebounding Egypt shows new confidence this year with the long-awaited opening of its $1 billion Grand Egyptian Museum (after several delays, it’s slated to welcome visitors by the end of 2020). Just over a mile from the show-stopping Giza Pyramid Complex, the museum promises, among other things, a faithful reconstruction of Tutankhamun’s extravagantly ornamented tomb, featuring more than 5,000 original pieces. Though the country’s troubles have not vanished, the number of returning tourists has crept upwards enough to encourage other luxuries; the new Cairo St Regis is a chic high-rise hotel offering respite from street-level chaos. May might be the best time to see Egypt’s wonders without an accompanying rabble, before summer gets truly sweltering, but off-season enough to bag five-stars for less.

Sustainable travel tip: Cruising down the Nile on your bucket list? Set sail on a traditional wooden felucca , a more sustainable option than the ubiquitous four-storey floating hotels, some of which are known to pollute the river with fuel and sewage.

Where to stay: At one of Egypt’s best beach hotels and red sea diving spots, Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh . Or, this mini house near Cairo is a photographer's dream, available to book on Airbnb.

Memphis Tennessee

14. Memphis, USA

Temperature in May: 27°C high; 17°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 12 hours Time difference: GMT -6

The Memphis in May Festival – a month of celebrations centred around the beloved preoccupations of blues and barbecue – brings an already party-loving city even more to life. Lately, this storied part of the American South has been gifted with a little extra sparkle, too: an expanded Graceland features an entire museum dedicated solely to Elvis’s cars; the new Mighty Lights of Hernando de Soto Bridge shine a nightly show over the Mississippi’s swell. Beale Street remains an essential destination: a neon strip of legendary blues clubs. And don’t leave without a taste of those famed baby-back ribs. With around 115 barbecue restaurants inside the city, there’s really no excuse.

Sustainable travel tip: Memphis may not exactly be pedestrian-friendly, but, thanks to the recent development of more than 300 miles of bike lanes, there’s now a quick and clean way to navigate both downtown and the city’s wider sprawl. Explore Bike Share supplies the Memphis version of Boris bikes, accessed via an app.

Where to stay : In the downtown district of Memphis lies The Peabody , a grand hotel a favourite of locals and travellers.

Pig Island in Bahamas

15. Bahamas, Caribbean

Temperature in May: 29°C high; 22°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 12 hours Time difference: GMT -5

Behold the Bahamian sweet spot: May. The winter hordes long gone, and spring-breakers freshly departed. Hurricane season doesn’t set in until June . Beaches relieved of rowdy crowds settle sedately in the sun. There’s nothing to do but stake out your patch on pristine Cabbage Beach (even quieter at the north end), take your pick of poolside lounge chairs, and pluck the fruits of Gladstone Road Farmers Market (open until the end of the month). You might even splash about with a sow at Pig Beach.

Sustainable travel tip: Andros Island isn’t just an unspoiled slice of backcountry untroubled by cruise ships and high-rise hotels; it’s also home to Tiamo , an impressive eco-lodge with just 13 thatched bungalows fringed by white beach and thick palms. Tiamo runs on solar power, has composting toilets (though you wouldn’t know it to look at them), and employs staff from local communities who are trained as nature guides – take an informed boat tour through mangroves or explore caves and forests inland.

Where to stay: On a private oceanfront estate with Versailles-like gardens at Four Season's The Ocean Club . Guests can dine at top chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Dune, indulge in the Balinese-inspired One&Only Spa, or relax by the oceanfront pool. A mix of locality, cerulean sea, and ultra-private intimacy makes Rosewood Baha Mar the easiest place to stop in to for winter sun without becoming a total beach bum.

Chobe National Park in Botswana

16. Botswana, Africa

Temperature in May: 27°C high; 10°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 13 hours Time difference: GMT +2

The Okavango Delta hogs all the press, but Chobe National Park, in Botswana ’s north-east corner, is every bit as captivating, especially in May. It’s the beginning of dry season, but just before high season, so camps aren’t too crowded, the weather is mild (around 25°C) and evaporating surface water drives large herds of animals to the Chobe River. Cruise past crocs and hippos on a boat safari, with a glass of chilled South African wine in hand. The park is also home to one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants. andBeyond’s Chobe Under Canvas provides a proper adventure, bringing you as close to nature as you might care to get.

Sustainable travel tip: Most national parks and reserves in Botswana lease the land from local communities, generating royalties that are invested back into the community and into conservation. The country has also created an Eco-Certification System for tourism businesses (more here botswanatourism.co.bw ), so check whether your operator and/or accommodation is meeting those standards. For more inspiration, see our pick of Six incredible safari lodges in Botswana.

Where to stay: Jack’s Camp is an old-world, Moroccan-style glamorous tented safari camp in the middle of Botswana’s arid Kgalagadi. Amongst the many lodges in Botswana are some stunning Airbnbs too - this farm has taken our fancy.

Homes along Carbon Beach

17. California, USA

Temperature in May: 22°C high; 12°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 11 hours Time difference: GMT -8

Come May we're California -dreamin' – of Yosemite National Park, cool and quirky San Francisco and shiny sparkly Los Angeles . If you harbour Jack Kerouac fantasies then take an all-American road trip through the state or along Big Sur. Conversely, the cities and towns of California are diverse and interesting enough individually to brave the long-haul flight for. San Francisco is the state capital of food and outdoor action (if not the actual state capital), while Los Angeles is a strange glittering town of health, wealth and youth, and San Diego is great for surfing. The smaller towns dotted along this sunny coast, such as Malibu and Palm Springs , are also charming enough to keep you occupied.

Sustainable travel tip: Between tech giants and movie studios, California is overwhelmingly agricultural, and its status as the nation’s food basket means the majority of its trendy farm-to-table restaurants are the real deal. San Francisco, in particular, champions regional farms and producers all over its menus: avoid Downtown tourist traps and head for hot restaurants in hip ’hoods such as Cow Hollow and the Mission. Don’t miss the temple to local food at the Ferry Building’s covered market, either.

Where to stay: Little sister to the smarter Palihouse, Palihotel has 32 rooms with a velvety bohemian glamour and Dean & Deluca snacks in the bulging mini-bars. For the full LA experience, there's even the Eggslut food truck outside. Or, For a design hotel, The Hoxton in Downtown LA is a firm favourite.

Vancouver Island

18. Vancouver Island

Temperature in May: 17°C high; 10°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 9 hours 15 minutes Time difference: GMT -8

In amongst the knotted tangle of Vancouver Island 's evergreen forest, it's easy to forget that this is supposedly the most populated island in North America. Mother Nature is still queen, with bears roaming the interior and excellent whale-watching off the coast. Even if you're not barmy about wildlife, this island is one big playground. Daredevils can throw themselves down whitewater rapids, paraglide from peaks or snorkel and dive the sea. There's a more chilled-out side too; the surfer town of Tofino is quickly becoming the best place for food, while glamping takes on new heights at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort .

Sustainable travel tip: Pay a visit to the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The park falls within the traditional territories of nine different nations of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, and park authorities work closely with those nations to manage the lands respectfully and represent First Nations culture. It’s one of few examples of tourism in Canada working for indigenous people, and is well worth supporting.

Where to stay: If you venture over to Vancouver Island, book a room at Rosewood Hotel Georgia . There is a fabulous speakeasy bar with a range of dangerous absinthes, a buzzy courtyard café, a stunning pool and a five-star spa. Distinguished, clubby and stylishly Edwardian, it feels like an elegant throwback to the wonderful era of grand hotels.

Cape Verde

19. Cape Verde

Temperature in May: 27°C high; 20°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 7 hours 45 minutes Time difference: GMT -1

Known as Africa's answer to the Galápagos Islands, richly diverse Cape Verde is good for a guaranteed hit of sunshine located in The Atlantic. The dramatic interior hides volcanic hot springs and arid deserts, while the beaches, with their azure seas and white sands, are more befitting of the Caribbean. With this abundance of natural resources and a dash of African charm and culture, Cape Verde's potential is finally being recognised.

Sustainable travel tip: Most tourists head to Cape Verde for a fly-and-flop holiday, but why not prioritise local culture and landscape with Responsible Travel ’s walking and cultural trip instead? The itinerary includes stays at family-run guesthouses and plumps for hiking routes that don’t trample over ecologically delicate areas.

Where to stay: Odjo d'Aqua Hotel , a small, locally owned hotel with a garden, a pool, anachronistically decorated rooms (antiques and curios, fishing equipment and so on) and an open-air restaurant-bar jutting out into the sea, where you can eat as the Atlantic rollers crash past.

Lake District England

20. Lake District, England

Temperature in May: 13°C high; 4°C low Season: spring Travel time from UK: 5 hours drive from London Time difference: GMT

Cumbria might not be basking in glorious early-summer sunshine come May, but spring is still one of the loveliest times to finally pay a visit to the Lake District National Park . Ironically, in these parts, lakes are actually diversely known as ‘meres,’ ‘tarns’ and ‘waters’. Whatever you call these vast bodies of water, a May trip promises joyful signs of the changing seasons, from carpets of bluebells to spotting Herdwick lambs to rich cherry blossoms – all without the crowds that flock here once summer-proper arrives.

Sustainable travel tip: Where possible, leave a car behind and sightsee on public transport, by bike or on foot.

Where to stay: Set on a hillside a short drive from Lake Windermere, Gilpin Hotel sprawls across 21 acres of verdant grounds. Or check into low-key country-house Another Place in Ullswater for uninterrupted views of the lake and brilliant on-site restaurants.

Combining shoulder-season prices with decent weather in many parts of the world, May offers a lot to travelers. So whether you’re seeking wildlife encounters, cultural happenings, an intrepid journey or a destination that won’t break the bank, there’ll be something in this month’s round-up sure to rouse your wanderlust.

Here are the best places to go in May, for any travel style.

Samothraki, Greece

Why now? To see an underexplored part of Greece.

Lurking out in the northeast Aegean, Samothraki (Samothrace) also lurks off most international tourists’ radars – and is all the more alluring for it (though it’s popular among Greeks, so avoid July and August). The island is home to forests, streams and waterfalls – especially lush and full-flowing in spring – and Mt Fengári, the highest peak in the region, atop which it’s said Poseidon sat to watch the Trojan War. This makes it a natural-adventure playground, great for hiking, rafting and canyoning, as well as a place to chill (the best beaches are at Pachia Ammos, Vatis and Kipos). If the sea still feels chilly in May, go to Thermá, to dip in the village’s warm natural mineral springs.

Why now? Sun’s out, surf’s up.

Barbados is your grade-A tropical paradise, prime for beach lazing, sun-soaking and enjoying the sea breeze. But it’s also one of the best islands in the Caribbean for surfing, especially on its Atlantic-facing south and east coasts. Conditions are usually good and consistent from November right through to June; the advantage of May is that, while there might be a little more rain than in the preceding months, it’s still super sunny, and prices are lower, too. Top spots for catching waves include Freights Bay (good for beginners), South Point and Soup Bowl, a world-class wave near laid-back Bathsheba that has hosted international competitions. Brandons, a glorious beach near the capital Bridgetown , is also popular. Also of note, Rihanna is from Barbados, you can check out her childhood home among other great places to visit in Barbados .

Where are the best places to travel to in May for wildlife and nature?

Great Smoky Mountains, USA

Why now? Glimpse a dazzling natural display, before the crowds arrive.

The Smokies are truly on fire this month. This spectacular subrange of the Appalachian chain, on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee , is home to huge numbers of Photinus carolinus (synchronous fireflies) and May to June is typically when they put on their magical en-masse mating display: a forest full of males flashing in unison. If you want to see this amazing phenomenon read the how-to from our expert, John Garry. This natural wonder is the icing on the cake of a springtime road trip through the mountains. The USA’s most popular national park is quieter at this time. Take scenic drives via its misty ridges, hike wildflower-flush trails, look out for the diverse wildlife – from groundhogs and chipmunks to salamanders and black bears – and soak up the strong Southern Appalachian culture: log cabins, mills and churches built by early settlers have been preserved here.

Newfoundland, Canada

Why now? To watch icebergs float through the Atlantic.

They call the waters off Newfoundland and Labrador  “Iceberg Alley.” In spring, great hunks of Arctic ice – mostly cast-offs from the glaciers of western Greenland – float down the Atlantic coast past Canada ’s easternmost province. They usually arrive in April and May, peaking from mid-May to June. You can stand onshore and watch these white titans drift by or board a boat for a closer look. Good spots include St Anthony, Twillingate, Bonavista and St John’s /Cape Spear. Seabirds also start to show up in May, while by the end of the month the first whales appear.

Damaraland, Namibia

Why now? To see local wildlife on warm days in green wilderness.

Even in a country as sparse as Namibia – the second-least-populated place on earth – Damaraland stands out as especially empty. Sprawling across north-central Namibia, it’s a wilderness of craggy mountains, dry riverbeds and desert-adapted animals, including elephants, rhinos and lions. May, when days are warm and dry and the landscape is still tinged green, is a great time to seek out these species as they gather around waterholes. Better still, the country is a pioneer in community-driven ecotourism, with large areas run as communal conservancies that empower local people.

Uzbekistan

Why now? see the Silk Road showstopper in fine weather.

Caravansaries. The Silk Road. Spices. There’s something undeniably romantic about travel here, which has been the cultural heart of Central Asia for millennia and one of our picks for Best in Travel 2024 . This is especially true of Uzbekistan ’s trio of historic cities – Samarkand , Bukhara  and  Khiva – which glitter with mosaic-tiled mausoleums, mosques and medressas (religious schools) that still speak of ancient times. Bukhara’s Silk and Spices Festival (late May) seeks to celebrate that legacy, showcasing the carpet weavers, wood carvers, musicians and artists still practicing traditional skills. Indeed, May is the perfect month to visit. Temperatures in the mid-70s°F (mid-20s°C) make for comfortable sightseeing, while tulips and apricot blossoms enliven the landscapes. Our own Alex Butler traveled to Uzbekistan recently, you could make it easy on yourself and copy her trip.

Why now? Sail to the fjords in sunshine on the west coast.

Hurtigruten ferries ply Norway ’s 1491-mile (2400 km) west coast, from southerly Bergen to Arctic Kirkenes year-round. They are a lifeline for people living along this wild, fjord-serrated seaboard – so they must depart, whatever the weather. That said, May to June is a good time to visit. The weather is generally mild and days are extraordinarily long. By mid-May, the sun doesn’t set at all in far-north Tromsø – which means you can watch the jaw-dropping scenery glide by all night long. Better weather and more light make it easier to hop off for activities, too. There are 34 ports of call; disembark to fish in the Lofoten Islands , meet Sami people at North Cape or hike near Geirangerfjord. Note that May is a month of festivals in pretty Bergen, so allow extra time here before you sail. You can even go on a budget if you know how.

Where are the best places to travel to in May for culture?

Why now? Encounter marine giants and Maya monuments in dry weather.

Diminutive Belize  packs a big punch. Only about 180 miles (290km) long, and with English as the official language, it’s a cinch to hop between its ancient Maya ruins, wildlife-rich tropical forests, living Maya communities and the cays and atolls of the world’s second-longest barrier reef, offering gorgeous beaches and fabulous snorkeling. You can see a lot of the country on a road trip  with no problem. May’s a sweet spot for weather and wildlife, when the sun shines, whale sharks cruise near Gladden Spit, and nesting green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles lumber onto beaches on Glover’s Reef and Ambergris Caye . In the north, explore relatively little-visited temples at jungle-set sites such as Xunantunich and Lamanai ; today, the descendants of the ancient Maya who built these monuments live in villages around Toledo, where they welcome visitors to immersive homestays.

Memphis, USA

Why now? Music, grilled meat and Mississippi sunsets – without the mosquitos.

Memphis is less like a city, and more like a religion. People come to pay homage in the spiritual home of the blues, rock’n’roll, Elvis Presley and Memphis-style barbecue. In short, it’s a feast for ears, bellies and souls. Spring sees the Tennessee city at its tastiest: good weather, before summer’s sticky, buggy heat; plus the Memphis in May festival , incorporating the Beale Street Music Festival, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the Great American River Run and more. There are sites aplenty: take a tour of legendary Sun Studio ; visit the National Civil Rights Museum (partially housed inside the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr was shot in 1968); and, of course, make a pilgrimage to Graceland , Elvis’ uber-kitsch home. Wander through all of the great neighborhoods in Memphis to really get under the skin of this historical city.

Murcia, Spain

Why now? To eat really well.

There isn’t really a bad time to visit Spain ’s Costa Cálida (the “Warm Coast”). But balmy, sunny May, with average highs of around 25°C (77°F), is a good time to get a real flavor of the place before summer crowds arrive. And the flavors are exceptional: surrounded by hills, vineyards, olive groves, fertile gardens and rich seas, the region is renowned for its quality meats, fruit, vegetables and fish. Regional specialities to look out for include caldero del mar menor , a cauldron-cooked rice stew traditionally made by fishermen from catch too small to sell; and paparajotes , battered and fried lemon leaves. Tapas trails can be followed in both the regional capital  Murcia and the historic port of Cartagena .

GettyImages-1497742498-RFC.jpg

Bali, Indonesia

Why now? Eat your way into the local culture.

Bali in May? Delicious. Dry, hot and sunny days, peak season crowds yet to descend and – as always – a relaxed vibe. Nowhere is the latter more true than in Ubud , the artsy, hippie highlands town with a good line of galleries and museums, ancient temples and a thriving food scene. Ubud, which is surrounded by lush forests, paddy fields and leafy plantations, has several world-class restaurants and fancy cocktail lounges as well as low-key food stalls and cafes serving Balinese specialities – gado gado salad, satay, injin porridge, babi guling (suckling pig) and more. It’s a great place to take a cooking course.

Start planning your trip to Bali with these things to know before you go.

Where is hot in May? 14 sunny destinations to visit in 2024

From a trip to sicily’s flower festival to trekking peru’s inca trail, these may getaways are sure to leave you with a spring in your step.

where to travel warm in may

W ith spring knocking at the doors of many northern hemisphere destinations, the options for a pre-summer, sun-drenched break are numerous. Close to home, you have places like Sicily, Greece and Turkey offering the possibility of a long weekend. If you’re overdue a long-haul break, there are gardens to admire in Japan, leopards to look for in Zambia or Sri Lanka, and Silk Road cities to seduce you in Uzbekistan. May is also the best month for visits to Machu Picchu, perhaps via the Inca Trail, and your last chance before hurricane season to have a Caribbean break — with the bonus of cheaper prices.

1. Dominican Republic

Bavaro beach in Punta Cana (Alamy)

Average temperature 27C The Dominican Republic tends to be busiest from December to April, then rainy and hurricane-threatened after June. As such, May is a clever time to go. Yes, you might suffer a few brief showers, and yes, the humidity is rising, but unbroken sunshine, cheaper accommodation costs, warm seas and emptier golden-sand shores easily outweigh those cons. Few Caribbean islands (the Dominican Republic shares one with Haiti) have such beautiful beaches, especially around the resorts of Punta Cana. Inland are mountains, rainforests and rivers offering trekking, biking, kayaking and whitewater rafting, while the southerly capital, Santo Domingo, has cool hotels and a buzzing music scene amid its attractive streets. That southern shore is likely to be the warmest and driest of all.

2. antiparos, greece.

The Blue Lagoon between Paros and Antiparos (Getty Images)

Average temperature 20C All 6,000 Greek islands begin hotting up in May. None are trendier than dinky Antiparos, however, which in recent years has become an idyll of choice for celebs from Madonna to Matthew McConaughey. An alternative to busier Cycladic rivals Mykonos and Santorini , it sits just off — and a seven-minute ferry ride from — bigger Paros, which is itself quietly lovely. On Antiparos you’ll find plenty of sandy bays, great wind-sports opportunities and a couple of laid-back beach clubs. There are several cool cocktail bars too, but the chief perk is low-key seclusion: think cicada-soundtracked coves, sheep-happy hillsides and an excellent array of sea-view villas. Even Antiparos’s chicest hotel pledges privacy; the Rooster has 16 individual, water-facing houses, an earthy spa and a farm-to-table restaurant, yet notably no central pool.

Quechua women in Cuzco, Peru (Alamy)

Average temperature 26C May is the perfect time for Machu Picchu. Dry season has just begun in Peru , meaning little rainfall and plenty of lingering greenery — important for photographs, with those bright green lawns part of the Lost City’s visual appeal — and smaller crowds than from June to August. With this extraordinary Incan-built mountaintop citadel busy at all times, any reduction in footfall makes a marked difference. The same is true of the famous Inca Trail, along which multi-day hikes to Machu Picchu pass other remains and scenic routes. Book as far in advance as possible. Nearby city Cuzco, where Incan buildings host McDonald’s outlets and traditionally dressed herders peruse iPhones while leading llamas across the main square, will be just as pleasant, and so too is Peru’s capital, Lima, known for its exceptional restaurants and museums.

4. South Korea

Gwangjang Market in Seoul (Getty Images)

Average temperature 18C The end of springtime in South Korea , May provides ideal climes for exploring this Asian country’s surprisingly rangy options. Most tours start in fast-paced Seoul , scoffing seaweed-wrapped rolls in Gwangjang Market and visiting the eponymous, trendy district of Psy’s pop anthem Gangnam Style . Outside the capital, rice paddies and cherry tree-covered countryside soon give way to tempting national parks such as temple-crammed Jirisan, azalea-decorated Songnisan and bumpy Seoraksan. With temperatures balmy rather than sticky, and the wet season yet to arrive, conditions are ripe for trekking. Elsewhere there are celebrations to investigate — Damyang’s annual Bamboo Festival includes themed booze and crafts; the Boseong Aromatic Tea Festival lets visitors pick leaves and sample traditional ceremonies — while volcano-topped Jeju Island’s wonderful white-sand shores almost demand some R&R.

5. The east coast of Sri Lanka

The beach at Kalkudah (Getty Images)

Average temperature 15C Less explored than the island’s southern shores, the east coast of Sri Lanka contains mazy waterways and a series of sandy beaches. Some, such as the crescent-shaped Arugam Bay, are blowy and suit surfing; others including Kalkudah, offer calm seas and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for families. Free of monsoon rains, May offers prime conditions for both. It’s also within the annual cetacean-spotting season, with blue whales often sighted on boat tours from the slightly hippy port of Trincomalee (aka “Trinco”). Talking of wildlife, elephants can sometimes be seen in Lahugala National Park, tropical fish enchant snorkellers off Pigeon Island and, to the south, Yala National Park is renowned for its large leopard population. Palu trees also bear fruit here at this time of year, enticing sweet-toothed sloth bears.

6. Southeastern Sicily

The Infiorata flower festival in Noto (Alamy)

Average temperature 26C As one of Europe’s southernmost reaches, Sicily — the football beside mainland Italy ’s boot shape — delivers up to nine tan-topping hours of sunshine per day in May, before most tourists materialise. Its mildest corner is the southeast, which is characterised by fine sandy spiagge and a bevy of beautiful baroque hilltowns. Perhaps none are as beautiful as Noto, whose flamboyant buildings and red-gold arcades are complemented by May’s Infiorata flower festival, when elaborate, colourful carpets embellish the streets. Further north is the increasingly chic city of Siracusa, its oldest quarter on a separate island, and then active volcano Mount Etna, up whose rumbling, wine-growing flanks one can now hike. Other possible day trips include to lemon-scented Taormina for its wonderfully preserved Greek theatre, and to the great Greek temples of Agrigento.

• Best things to do in Sicily • Best hotels in Sicily

Victoria Falls (Alamy)

Average temperature 20C With the Emerald Season’s rains mostly ceased, national-park dirt roads are drying out and safari lodges are reopening across southern Zambia. That includes the massive Bangweulu Wetlands, known for its freaky spoonbill birds, and South Luangwa, which offers some of the continent’s best walking safaris. Leopards are prominent there, too; as it gets a bit cooler, they’ll start prowling around earlier into twilight, giving you more chance of seeing one during night safari drives. Though the still-lush (and very photogenic) vegetation complicates game-viewing, this gets easier as the month progresses, when grasses thin and thirsty animals gravitate to waterholes. May is also the best time of the year to cast a fishing line into the Zambezi River, and to see the jaw-dropping Victoria Falls in full, fabulous flow.

• Best safaris in Africa

8. Uzbekistan

Chorsu Bazaar (Alamy)

Average temperature 20C Spring produce — green apricots, apples, strawberries — abounds in the Chorsu Bazaar, vying for attention with horse burgers, yelling traders and the scent of saffron or baked bread. Oozing out from its flying saucer-like main building to annexes and adjacent streets, this massive market takes place daily in Tashkent. After seeing it, leave Uzbekistan ’s stately, Soviet-style capital behind by taking a high-speed train southwest to Samarkand. Once trod by Genghis Khan, this atmospheric old city contains breathtaking jade-domed mosques and the bejewelled necropolis of Shah-i-Zinda. Also worth visiting is another Silk Road survivor, smaller and less ostentatious Bukhara, chiefly to wander its beefy Ark of Bukhara citadel. Unlike uncomfortable, 40C summers, warm and dry temperatures render May the savviest time to visit this desert region.

• Best stops on the Silk Road • When is the best time to visit Uzbekistan?

Ice-cream sellers in the Sultanahmet district (Alamy)

Average temperature 21C Peak summer can be punishing in Istanbul , with high temperatures undermining the enjoyment factor of visits to Byzantine churches or traditional tea gardens. May’s much better for trips: it’s warm enough for short sleeves, but not so scorching that you crave air conditioning all day. That’s equally true several hundred miles south on Turkey’s sun-soaked Turquoise Coast, a holiday destination whose secluded bays, transparent waters, forested hills and stark white villas are near-perfect. The weather here in May will be as suitable for lazing on stellar beaches such as Oludeniz and Bitez as it is for visiting ancient mausoleums or devouring mint-flavoured dondurma ice cream. Bodrum is the buzziest base, flanked by luxury hotels and high-end beach clubs, but many quieter, taverna-filled fishing villages also await.

10. Tenerife, Canary Islands

Visitors at Roque Cinchado in Teide National Park (Alamy)

Average temperature 23C There’s much to like about a May trip to the largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife , where there’s an average nine daily hours of sunshine and little chance of rain. Mornings are cool enough for treks up Teide volcano without needing to wake up in the small hours. Seas have sufficient swells for surfing to start, but are meek enough for swimming, too. For those keen on R&R, southern, mountain-sheltered resorts such as Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas tend to enjoy higher temperatures and more sunshine than northern resorts — but there isn’t a great deal in it.

• Best hotels in Tenerife • Best villas in Tenerife • Best things to do in Tenerife

Cherry blossom in Matsumae, Hokkaido (Alamy)

Average temperature 18C May in Japan usually contains a good deal of summer warmth. Venture to the volcanic northern island of Hokkaido, however, and you can still join in the ritual of hanami , or cherry blossom-viewing . Four hours away by bullet train, capital Tokyo has heaps to see amid the month’s pleasant temperatures: yakitori-scented alleys, cosplay gangs, seas of neon, five-floor stationery stores and more. It’s also the best time to visit Kyoto , where Zen Buddhist garden temples and pond-flanked Shinto shrines will never look more serene — so long as one avoids early May’s Golden Week public holiday. Much further west, the remarkable wisteria tunnel in Kitakyushu’s Kawachi Fuji Gardens will be looking equally picturesque, but swerve Okinawa and its paradisiacal small islands as these are likely to be overly rainy.

12. Bermuda

St Peter’s Church in St George’s (Getty Images)

Average temperature 23C Alone in the middle of the Atlantic, fish hook-shaped Bermuda often gets mistaken for a Caribbean island. With plenty of sun, ivory-white sand and clear waters, you can certainly see why. But climate-wise, it’s much closer to North America; May marks the beginning of the summer season, when temperatures become more pleasant than cool. Capital Hamilton has the cathedral with city views but pretty St George has a far more fascinating history — it’s here that the first English settlers in America based themselves while re-provisioning for their onward journey. For walkers, following the Bermuda Railway Trail is a great way to learn about the island’s history while being immersed in its flora and fauna. Off the coast, there are hundreds of shipwrecks waiting for divers and snorkellers to explore.

• Best things to do in Bermuda • Best hotels in Bermuda

13. Kentucky, US

Elaborate headgear at the Kentucky Derby (Alamy)

Average temperature 20C One of the greatest sporting events in the US , the Kentucky Derby takes place in early May each year when some 150,000 spectators arrive at the Churchill Downs track in Louisville for a raucous good time. There’s a museum on site offering a fascinating insight into the history of the races and, if you avoid race day, you can do a tour of the grounds. If racing isn’t your thing, the Bluegrass State has another famous export: bourbon. Many of the distilleries are open to visitors; Buffalo Trace is one of the most historic and it’s free. Just pre-book and bring your ID.

14. Mauritius

Average temperature 23C May is one of the best months for visiting Mauritius . The subtropical climate means you’ll rarely feel cold here, but May marks the start of the dry season when temperatures drop slightly and the humidity lifts. It makes for a much more comfortable experience if you’re planning on taking advantage of the island nation’s many forested hiking trails or visiting Grand Bassin, a sacred lake surrounded by Hindu temples. Alternatively, you could just lie back and enjoy the many beaches, with Flic en Flac and Grand Baie among the most popular.

Take your pick of cafes in the coffee capital of Australia as you enjoy the cool autumn breeze. The CBD area of Melbourne is always bustling with activity. This city is one of the best places to go cafe hopping, hipster shopping or just admiring the street art.

I would recommend renting a car to coast along the Great Ocean Road on a day road trip and travel to the wildlife reserves along the outskirts of Melbourne. Awesome Places to Visit in the USA in May

New orleans, louisiana.

Best Places to Visit in USA in May: New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans tends to have its busiest season around Mardi Gras, which means tons of crowds coming in from all over. If you want to avoid the busy season, visiting New Orleans in May is a great way to enjoy the city without many people around.

The weather in New Orleans in May is quite warm, but not uncomfortably so. It’s the perfect weather for lounging by a pool or hanging out by Bayou St. John. In fact, May brings out some of the best festivals in New Orleans, including Bayou Boogaloo . The festival invites you to float about on the bayou while taking in music from top artists, food from vendors all over the city, and art from local talent.

What Places to Visit in USA in May: New Orleans, Louisiana

But Bayou Boogaloo isn’t the only big event happening in New Orleans in May. Although the 10-day party begins in late April, the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival lasts into May. With New Orleans being considered the birthplace of jazz, it’s no surprise that this massive festival is such a top attraction in the city.

Yellowstone National Park

Where to Vacation in USA in May: Yellowstone National Park

May is one of the best times to visit the beautiful Yellowstone National Park , which can be found in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Yellowstone is typically much busier in the summer, so going in May will prevent you from having to navigate through heavier crowds.

The temperature is also optimal for a visit. You’ll be greeted by sunny days, but remember to bring layers because the mornings can often be chilly this time of year. Going toward the middle or end of the month will also mean avoiding snow on the hiking paths. You can expect that nearly all of the hiking paths in this stunning location will be clear for you to travel.

What Places have Shoulder Season in USA in May: Yellowstone National Park

As the snow melts, you’ll find that Yellowstone truly comes to life. From the blooming wildflowers to the newborn bison and elk, there’s so much beauty to be found in Yellowstone National Park in May.

Orlando, Florida

Best Cities to Visit in USA in May: Orlando, Florida

Orlando is the “Theme Park Capital of the World.” And we often think of theme parks as being very family-friendly destinations. From Walt Disney World to Universal Studios Florida to LEGOLAND Florida , there are plenty of options for all levels of thrill seekers.

But because these spots are big with families, parents typically have to rely on their kids’ school schedules before booking vacations to these locations. That’s a big reason why Orlando tends to be packed over the summer or during spring or winter break.

What Places to Visit in USA in May: Orlando, Florida

With May being after spring break but before summer break, it tends to be a quieter month for Orlando, making it a great time to travel to the city. Plus, Orlando in the summer is often very hot and humid.

In comparison, May is far more pleasant. It’s easier to spend more time outside in May than it is in the summer. With so many things to do in Orlando and perfect weather to do it in, this city is one of the best places to visit in the US in May.

Grand Teton National Park

What Places have Shoulder Season in USA in May: Grand Teton National Park

Like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park is one of the best places to travel in the US in May, particularly if you go from mid to late May. All roads are usually open by mid-May, but you should still keep an eye on the weather before your trip. It can still snow in May in Grand Teton.

Unlike in the summer, fewer crowds are typically in Wyoming-based Grand Teton in May. May is also a top time for wildlife sightseeing. The landscape during this time is just as incredible as the creatures around you. From the snowcapped mountains to the lush wildflowers beginning to bloom, you’re not going to want to forget your camera to capture it all.

Where to Vacation in USA in May: Grand Teton National Park

Hiking will take you up to wonderful viewpoints, but keep in mind that there may still be mud and snow on the trails. Pack your gear accordingly. And because the wildlife is also emerging from their winter hideouts, May is an active time for bears. Be sure to pack bear spray and make noise on the trails. The weather can also change quickly in May, so wear layers and bring lots of water on your hikes.

Santa Barbara, California

What Places have Shoulder Season in USA in May: Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara is a top summer destination, which means busy crowds. May is a far calmer time to visit, but the weather is just as beautiful. When you visit Santa Barbara in May, you’ll be met with warm but mild days. It’s plenty warm enough to spend a day at the beach, but be sure to pack a light sweater for when the sun goes down.

Santa Barbara is known for its gorgeous beaches, vibrant art scene, and incredible food, all of which you get to enjoy when you visit in May. There are plenty of festivals celebrating Santa Barbara’s culture in May, but there are a few standouts that you can’t miss.

Over Memorial Day weekend, you’ll discover incredible artistic talents at the I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival . This event, which has a sister festival in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy, is all about the admiration of art and raising funds for arts education. Artists of all ages turn the street into their canvas. The result is stunning artwork you can’t find anywhere else.

Sedona, Arizona

What Places to Visit in USA in May: Sedona, Arizona

During the summer, Sedona can get so hot that it’s not a good idea to go on long hikes while the sun is beating down. Monsoon season, which lasts from June to September, can also keep you from your Sedona adventures.

But May is a perfect time to visit Sedona. Warm days meet chilly nights, creating a comfortable environment to get out and see the beauty of this city. It’s the ideal weather to explore those stunning red rocks.

Sedona has a rich history with deep ties to Mexican culture, which is why it’s one of the best places to spend Cinco de Mayo. The Cinco de Mayo Celebration is filled with vibrancy, from the folklorico dancers to the mariachi musicians. You’ll love immersing yourself in the lively culture here.

New York City

Where to Vacation in USA in May: New York City

For much of the year, New York City is rather cold. It seems like the winters here just keep getting longer and longer. However, people often brave the cold to experience the holiday season in December here, drawing in huge crowds. Those crowds are only matched by the influx of visitors who arrive to spend time in the warm summers.

With busy end-of-year celebrations and an equally busy summertime, finding the perfect time to visit New York City is hard. But May just may be the answer. The weather is warming up enough to spend more time outside sans your heavy winter coat.

What Places have Shoulder Season in USA in May: New York City

One thing to keep in mind is that late spring can be rainy in New York , so be sure to pack an umbrella. But if you’re willing to brave a little rain, you’ll find that New York City in May is filled with plenty to do but fewer people to have to do it all with.

From strolling around the cherry blossom trees to taking in the skyline on rooftop bars, so much of New York City becomes livelier when the weather heats up. And if you time your trip right, you might just see the incredible Manhattanhenge phenomenon. Because New York City is a grid, there are certain times of the year when the sun is at a perfect angle through the skyscrapers.

Los Angeles, California

What Places to Visit in USA in May: Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a top summer destination, but May tends to be a little quieter in the City of Angels. However, the weather tends to be warm but not too hot, creating the perfect climate for outdoor activities. Bring a light sweater, though, because it can get quite chilly when the sun goes down.

Take advantage of the lack of crowds in May by visiting some of the many highlights of Los Angeles. From seeing your favorite sets on studio tours to hiking in Griffith Park, you’ll find May is an ideal time to do it all. Because kids aren’t out on summer vacation yet, you’ll discover that many of the top family-friendly spots in the Los Angeles area are especially quieter.

Best Cities to Visit in USA in May: Los Angeles

Be sure to fit in a day at Knott’s Berry Farm , Disneyland , or Universal Studios Hollywood if you’re a theme park fan. These spots tend to be packed during the summer, but May will give you a break from the long wait times for your favorite rides. You’ll find the same to be true for the beloved Santa Monica Pier, especially if you’re able to visit it during the week instead of on a weekend.

Savannah, Georgia

Must Visit Places in May: Savannah, Georgia

While Savannah tends to get quite hot and humid in the summer, May is considerably milder, but it’s still plenty warm enough to explore outside. You’ll find that the parks are in bloom, with lush greenery and colorful flowers abound.

Where to Vacation in USA in May: Savannah, Georgia

Later in the month, you’ll find perfect weather for a day at the beach or a kayaking adventure. Only accessible through a guided tour, Antelope Canyon was shaped by millions of years of water and wind erosion. As sunlight enters through the canyon, it illuminates it and paints it a stunning pattern of pinks, reds, oranges, and golds.

Best Cities to Visit in USA in May: Antelope Canyon

You’ll want to visit when these light beams are most common, which is between May and September. But May is also a bit cooler than the weather you’ll find over the summer. You also may want to aim to arrive around midday, when the light is most likely to hit the canyon.

The hiking terrain of the Upper Antelope Canyon is mostly flat, making it attainable for even new hikers, though it does require the ability to climb some steep stairs. More adventurous hikers can take the Lower Antelope Canyon, which has more elevation changes, stairways, and ladders.

Death Valley National Park

Must Visit Places in May: Death Valley National Park

Piazza San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, Rialto but also Cannaregio can be wonderful at this time and, if you get a warm day, it can also be worth stretching to Lido, a lovely beach area in Venice with peculiar architecture.

The lagoon islands of Murano and Burano are also not to be missed at this time.

Tuscany in May

Tuscany and its rolling hills go through a magical time in May.

View of San Gimignano Tuscany at sunset

On a sunny day, you can enjoy the stunning rolling hills of this area, go for long days of sightseeing and even sit in the sun on one of the many Tuscany beaches .

The best places to visit in Tuscany in May are:

  • Florence – too hot in summer, cold in winter but perfect in spring
  • Val d’Orcia – an area of Tuscany of natural beauty so unique, it is now Unesco World Heritage Site
  • San Gimignano – delightful medieval town and Unesco World Heritage Site
  • Siena – One of the most beautiful small towns in Italy , with a wonderful historical town center
  • Lucca – a pretty town with a lovely center and the option to cycle along its medieval walls
  • Montalcino – wine town, perfect for wine lovers
  • Montepulciano – one of the prettiest villages in Tuscany and my personal favorite
  • Pienza – built in the Renaissance as the perfect city, no less!
  • San Quirico d’Orcia – a delightful medieval town in the heart of stunning Val d’Orcia
  • Monticchiello – a delightful country hamlet perfect to immerse yourself in relaxing country settings
  • Bagno Vignoni and Saturnia , two thermal localities with some of the best thermal springs in Tuscany

Umbria in May

Often considered the little sister of Tuscany, Umbria is stunning in any season and can be a real treat in May.

duomo of Orvieto Umbria

Depending on the weather, you can enjoy long walks and days along the shores of the regions’ lake Trasimeno or you can warm up in its lovely museums and restaurants.

Not to be missed are:

  • Orvieto – a stunning hilltop town with a long history and one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy (the Duomo)
  • Perugia – a wonderful medieval town
  • Assisi – the famous sand stunning town of St Francis. At the beginning of May, Assisi celebrates Calendimaggio, a fantastic historical festival during which you can experience performances and historical re-enactments.
  • Spello – the town of flowers, a gem in spring, when its famous flower displays come back to life after the long winter
  • Gubbio – one of the most fascinating and beautiful towns in Umbria
  • Citta’ di Castello – a gorgeous renaissance town

Puglia in May

Puglia is one of my favorite destinations in Italy in May.

Street in Martina Franca Puglia with traditional white architecture

Farther South and warmer than other destinations in this list, in May in Puglia you will be able to enjoy long days out and you may even get the chance to wear summer clothing here (don’t count on it though, always bring layers!

Wonderful places to visit in Puglia at this time are

  • Trani – a pretty, small village with a stunning church overlooking the sea (a vision!)
  • Martina Franca – a lovely, whitewashed town with wonderful churches in a unique Baroque style called ‘Barocco Martinese’
  • Alberobello – the famous town of trulli , UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Locorotondo – a delightful small town with whitewashed houses and pretty balconies everywhere (they win an annual prize for them, they are so special!)

You can see them all with a short road trip: you can find our 3 day Puglia itinerary here.

Matera in May

Close to Puglia but in the region of Basilicata, you have Matera, another wonderful destination to add to your May itinerary through Italy.

matera Italy at sunset

Matera is famous for its rupestrian churches and cave dwellings and can be lovely in spring.

Winter is rigid here and summer can be hot while spring can bring lovely temperatures that make sightseeing easy and do justice to this wonderful city.

You can find our guide to Matera here .

Sicily in May

May can be a good month to visit Sicily however the weather can be hit and miss so I recommend wrapping up, or at least you have layers with you so you can enjoy wonderful Sicily whatever the weather.

View of coastline of Scopello, Sicily

May in Sicily is a good time for cultural tourism, rather than and sea and sun vacation since high temperatures, especially towards the end of the month, are not always guaranteed.

Places we love in Sicily are:

  • Scopello – a charming small village with a beautiful, historical ‘tonnara’ (tuna fishing station, not turned cultural/event venue)
  • Palermo – one of the most beautiful cities in Italy
  • Taormina – a town with a fantastic ancient theater and glamorous town center with shops and hotels
  • Siracusa – a fantastic town with a historical city center and one of the best archaeological parks in Italy
  • Noto Valley – UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the presence of unique baroque towns

You can find our recommended Sicily itinerary here .

Amalfi Coast in May

May can be a wonderful time to visit the Amalfi Coast. This is the month when tourism starts to resume in this area and while you may find the water too cold for bathing (and you may get rainy days, it is pretty rainy here at this time) on a sunny day the Amalfi Coast simply shines!

Garden in Ravello, Amalfi Coast, with view of the sea

If you are in the area at this time, make sure you stay not just on the mainland but also stretch to the island of Capri, Ischia or Procida, magical Mediterranean paradise this time of the year.

You can find our guides to the Amalfi Coast at the following links:

  • Visiting the Amalfi Coast with kids (see below)
  • Visit the incredible archaeological site of Paestum , one of the best archaeological sites in Italy and one many visitor’s miss!

Cinque Terre in May

May is one of the best months for visiting Cinque Terre. It is the first moment after winter when trails tend to reopen (always check specific conditions for the days of your trip) and a time when spring temperatures allow for drinks in the sun, taking in the stunning views of this area.

view of Manarola village cinque terre

Make sure you book in advance if coming during the Easter holidays and do be ready for rain, always around the corner at this time!

Find our Cinque Terre guides at the following links:

Visiting the Italian Lakes in May

May is a wonderful month to visit Italy’s famous lakes. Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore top the list of lakes in Northern Italy tourists long to experience and this is a great month to do so.

On the lakes in May, you are likely to find mild temperatures and clear sky however, since they are close to mountains, the weather can be changeable.

The area of the lakes have wonderful gardens and one of the best places to see flowers in Italy , special in spring!

May can be a lovely time to visit Italy with kids as chances are the weather will allow them to spend time and the park and play in the spring sun at least for part of your stay.

Children walking in Rome in spring

Destinations I feel work well with kids at this time are:

Florence with kids – always lovely with children but way too hot in summer.

Venice with kids – mild and devoid of mosquitoes, hungry and annoying in summer

Verona with kids – a fantastic city to visit in all seasons, but especially pleasant in May when you can couple it with a day trip to Venice or Lake Garda

Tuscany with kids – May has the perfect temperature for hilltop town hopping

Rome with kids – full of indoor and outdoor attractions for all ages

Sicily with kids – mild and beautiful perfect for family sightseeing and the occasional day on the beach (for sandcastles, not swimming)

Ravenna with kids – a lovely, toddler friendly town close to kid-friendly attractions such as MIniatire Italy and Mirabilandoa, lovely at the start of summer.

Looking for family destination ideas in Italy? Find my selection of the best places to visit in Italy with kids here.

What to book in advance for spending May in Italy

May can be very busy in Italy and advance booking for all main attractions is recommended.

Attractions that need advance booking are:

  • Last Supper (Milan) – book as soon as tickets come available as they sell out fast
  • Uffizi Gallery (Florence)
  • Vatican Museums (Vatican City, Rome) – book as soon as tickets come available as they sell out fast
  • Colosseum (Rome) – bookings become available 4 weeks before your desired date.

Trains do not usually need to be booked in advance however, high-speed train on popular routes such as Rome to Florence do tend to book out or only have very expensive tickets available.

I always recommend booking accommodation in advance and my favorite booking engine is booking.com.

They have a large selection of accommodation options and excellent free cancellation opportunities too.

Visiting Korea in May

Some would say that May is the absolute best time of the year to visit Korea. The heaving crowds from peak cherry blossom season have left, and summer vacations haven’t started yet, so booking tours and accommodation in Seoul is much simpler.

korea in may | biking next to the Han River

May is the ideal time for outdoor activities in Korea

There’s also plenty to keep you entertained, with some of the year’s best festivals occurring in the month of May. I’ll cover these a bit later on in this guide.

The May weather in Korea is pretty much ideal. So whether you choose to hike up Bukhansan, or take a leisurely stroll around Seokchon Lake Park, this is definitely the month to get outdoors and explore the delights of nature.

Korea in May | Weather

The warming trend of spring continues in Korea during May, with daytime temperatures reaching as high as the mid-20s°C | high 60s°F by the end of the month. May (along with October) is one of the best months to visit Korea climate-wise, with ideal temperatures, little humidity, and long, sunny days.

korea in may | sunset on the han river

The weather is pretty much perfect in May.

In May, average daily temperatures in Korea range from 13°C | 55°F to 23°C | 73°F across the country. There’s some humidity, but the gross mugginess brought by summer monsoons have yet to hit the Peninsula, and it’s a very pleasant time to be in Korea.

Korea Weather in May Quick Guide

Korea in may | seoul weather.

Seoul in May is pretty indicative of the weather all over the country. The average temperature increases 6°C from April, up to 17°C | 63°F. Highs can reach up to 25°C | 77°F by the end of the month. You can expect an extra 60 to 90 minutes of daylight in Korea in May, with many of those hours filled with blue skies and bright sunshine.

May is the perfect month to  rent a hanbok in Seoul and tour palaces comfortably.

The Seoul weather in May has increasing humidity, but it still doesn’t feel overly humid or uncomfortable yet. There are about 6 days of rain (mostly concentrated at the end of the month), totalling approximately 100-mm, on average.

Korea Weather in May | Busan

Busan is located on the southeastern coast of Korea, so it’s slightly warmer than Seoul in May. It has average daily temperatures of 15°C | 59°F to 22°C | 72°F. In Busan, the Korea weather in May is relatively rainy, with an average of 9 days of rain per month, totalling approximately 157-mm of precipitation.

SMALL GROUP AND PRIVATE TOURS   |  Major attractions like Taejongdae Cliff, Songdo Skywalk, Gamcheon Culture Village, and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple are spread out in several different areas of Busan. Make the most of your limited time with tailored small group or private tours.  Check options here.

Korea Weather in May | Jeju Island

Jeju has a temperate humid climate, but in May, temperatures are not much different than in Seoul. Averages range from 14°C | 57°F to 22°C |72°F, with 10 days of rain, totalling around 100-mm of precipitation.

korea in may | jeju island

May is a gorgeous time of year to visit Jeju Island.

Overall though, May is an absolutely wonderful time to visit Jeju Island. Nature is at its most verdant, and the Korea weather in May on Jeju is perfect for the many outdoor activities available on the island.

GETTING AROUND JEJU ISLAND   |  Public transit on Jeju Island is not as efficient as in Seoul. Distances are long, and it’s a lot slower, so most visitors either  take day tours,  hire a taxi, rent a car, or  book a private car charter.

To rent a car as a traveller to Korea, you MUST have: a book type international driver’s permit (obtained in your home country), your passport, and your driver’s license from home.  Check full details and availability of rental cars on Jeju Island here.

Korea Weather in May | Sokcho (East Coast)

The Korea weather in May on the East Coast beaches is typically a bit cooler than in the interior. Sokcho in May has average daily temperatures ranging from 12°C | 54°F to 17°C | 63°F. In my experience. it can feel pretty chilly, especially with those sea breezes, so be prepared with some heavier weight clothing.

There’s more days of rain in Sokcho in May, but less overall precipitation relative to Seoul and Busan. There’s still plenty of sunshine to enjoy.

Korea in May | Air Quality

In Korea in May, there are fewer bad air days compared to April, but it’s still a depressing factor.

As spring begins in Korea, windstorms originating in the Gobi Desert, travel across China and land squarely on top of the ROK, in the form of yellow dust. Called “hwangsa,” in Korean, it colours the sky, in a murky yellowish fog. And it’s full of ultrafine and fine dust pollution.

yellow dust korea weather in april

Yellow dust and pollution can be an unfortunate part of visiting Korea in May.

If you’re visiting Korea in May, be sure to equip yourself with some kind of air pollution mask, and allergy meds if you need them. There’s no need to prepare too many masks in advance. You can pick up high-quality disposable air pollution masks in any pharmacy, convenience store or Daiso in Korea for as low as 500 won each.

The Korean equivalent of an N95 mask is called KF94. If that feels too hot and heavy for the Korea weather in May, you can get a KF80 mask instead. This will factor out 80% of pollutants, so it’s not perfect, but it’s still better than nothing.

Masks have been an unfortunate part of life for too long now.

Limited Edition Spring Tours in Korea

Plum blossoms in Gwangyang Maehwa Village are usually the first sign of spring in Korea, with petals bursting into bloom from mid-March. Like cherry blossom season, the dates for most spring tours in Korea is incredibly limited. Most run for just a few short weeks, so catch them while you can.

There are a number of separate events to attend during the festival, including a lighting ceremony, cultural performances, traditional lantern exhibition, and lantern making experiences.

The highlight is undoubtedly the Lotus Lantern Parade, where literally thousands of Buddhists carry lovely glowing lanterns, along a route that starts at Heunginjimun Gate and ends at Jogyesa Temple. It starts at 7:00PM, but I suggest arriving a bit earlier to get a good spot on the parade route.

On May 12th, you can participate in cultural events like lantern making, and watch traditional performances, while eating favourful temple cuisine. All events will be held on the street directly in front of Jogyesa Temple.

If you can’t make it to Yeon Deung Hoe on either of those days, you can still see traditional lanterns colourfully displayed at Jogyesa Temple, Bongeunsa, and Gwanghwamun Square for another few weeks.

Korea in May | What to Wear

To best deal with Korea’s weather in May at the beginning of the month, jeans, leggings, skirts, and long-sleeved shirts, tees, or lighter weight sweaters work well. Bring along a hoodie, cardigan or light jacket for cooler evening temperatures.

By the end of the month (or even earlier), it’s warm enough for shorts and t-shirts for those used to cooler temperatures. Travellers from tropical climates might still find it a bit chilly, especially at night.

korea weather in may | what to wear

By the end of May, it’s warm enough to wear shorts and t-shirts

There is some precipitation, but it’s not really enough to worry about, unless you’re visiting in the very last week of May. This is when the bulk of rainfall happens as we head into summer monsoon season, so it’s helpful to have waterproof shoes or quick-dry clothing. I wouldn’t recommend wearing a raincoat at the end of May in Korea, as it could be hot and uncomfortable.

Best places to travel in May 2025

Across the Northern Hemisphere, May brings spring blossoms, sunshine, and warmer weather, but the summer crowds haven’t arrived to most destinations. In the Southern Hemisphere, the rains are ending and the weather is starting to cool down a bit.

If you want to get outside to enjoy the ample sun, you might look for wildlife in US National Parks, or take a water safari in a mokoro canoe in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It’s also a popular time for festivals, whether you’re watching jazz performances in Saint Lucia, or sampling single-source organic chocolate in Belize.

1. Thailand

Thailand’s weather is reliably dry and hot throughout May, but the majority of the crowds have headed home, making this an excellent time to visit. Throughout the month you’ll enjoy summery temperatures and uncrowded beaches, as well as mostly blue skies, with just a small chance of rain.

If you tire of the beach, you might take a guided walking tour of Bangkok’s street food or go to Dragon Island, where you can explore the bizarre rock formations, sheer limestone cliffs, hidden grottoes and untouched beaches. For an in-depth look at Thai life, head north to Chiang Mai and spend a day with a local family.

Across the northern half of the country, spring has settled in with pleasantly warm temperatures. April rains have left much of the landscape lushly green, from the prairie grasslands of the Midwest to the woodlands of New England. It’s a fine time for exploring outdoors, especially in the national parks, where the wildlife is active.

In the southern half, spring is starting to shade into summer, but days are still comfortable and you can expect dry weather and sunny skies. (The exception is Hawaii, which sees Pacific storms and lots of rain.)

Despite the comfortable weather, the crowds are generally thin until Memorial Day (the last weekend in May).

Though Croatia is a year-round destination, May is a particularly lovely time to experience all that the country has to offer. The weather is warm and sunny, but not too hot for hiking, kayaking and other outdoor activities. You’re also visiting before the summer crush that occurs as spring turns to summer.

May is also when Split celebrates its patron saint, Domnius, with processions, traditional klapa music, a rowing contest, and a street fair. For a more rural experience, consider a guided tour of the Šibenik Islands, where you’ll find more traditional villages. Or enjoy the country’s landscapes with a bout tour of Krka National Park.

  • Don't miss: Family tour of Croatia
  • Flight time: 2 hours 30 upwards dependent on airline (London to Split)

May is the only month that’s pleasant across the whole of China, making it the best time for a grand tour of the country. Temperatures are warm, but not yet sticky and hot. In Yunnan, the flowers are in full bloom and rhododendron bushes cover the mountain slopes in shades of pink and white. Be aware that the first few days of May are a national holiday and very busy, so plan around those dates.

Your visit might include a walk along one of the less-busy sections of the Great Wall or a leisurely cruise down the Li River. To sample the many nuances of China’s cuisines, consider a guided food tour in Shanghai or Chengdu.

5. Botswana

May marks the beginning of the dry, cooler period in Botswana. Humidity falls, leaving comfortably warm conditions. Nights and early mornings can have a chill in the air, so you might need an extra layer for dawn safaris and after sundown.

As temperatures gradually dip, animals become more active. You’ll see them in peak health thanks to the abundance of water on the ground. As well as game drives, you can take boat or mokoro (traditional canoe) trips to explore wildlife along the Okavango Delta’s reed-lined waterways. Botswana’s reserves are never crowded, but you’ll see even fewer visitors than later in the season, and might be able to take advantage of lower prices.

Under a warm sun and clear skies, Jordan blooms in May. Early spring rains have turned the valleys green and you’ll see wildflowers soaking up the sun across the country, even in the desert. This is a popular time to visit thanks to the moderate weather, so be sure to plan well ahead to secure the best options, especially if you want to see Petra.

The comfortable weather also makes May an excellent month for hiking in the nature reserves, where the flora and fauna are abundant. If you prefer to drive, you can take a guided Jeep tour of the Mars-like Wadi Rum.

7. Saint Lucia

May is one of the best times to enjoy this Caribbean island. Those who visited for a winter break have gone home, but the rains haven’t begun and you’re well before hurricane season. The temperatures are pleasantly warm year-round, but during May, the hotels offer excellent value and the beaches are largely free of visitors.

May is also when the island hosts the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival. Local and international artists come together for ten days to offer performances of jazz, R&B, and calypso in venues across the island.

  • Don't miss:
  • Flight time: 9 hours (direct)

The type of weather you get in Belize is dependent upon where you’re visiting, but May is warm, dry and sunny in the Cayo District and on the Cayes. It’s before the rainy season starts in June but well after the Easter rush, so you’ll have fewer visitors to contend with.

The third week of May is also the Toledo Cacao Fest, a week-long festival dedicated to all things chocolate. You can attend tastings, cooking competitions, and street fairs that put the spotlight on the country’s small but burgeoning cacao industry. If tastings aren’t enough and you want to learn more about Belize’s chocolate, we can arrange for you to tour an organic chocolate farm.

9. The Philippines

In May, the archipelago enjoys consistently hot, dry weather and a calendar that’s packed with festivals. Those who revel in the heat will enjoy the lowlands areas, while others can visit the mountains or the coast, where the temperatures are a bit more moderate.

No matter where you go, if you’re visiting in May, you can probably find a festival nearby. In Iloilo, Panay Island, Filipinos celebrate the water buffalo with races at the Carabao Carroza on 3rd May. In Pakil, Laguna, the Turumba Festival commemorates the seven sorrows of the Virgin Mary throughout the month, and in Obando, locals and pilgrims dance and sing in the streets between 17th and 19th May.

In May, the weather in the Greek Islands is warm and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 27°C. The sea temperature is around 20°C, so it’s not too cold for swimming and water activities. Compared to the hot and crowded summer months, May offers a more comfortable climate for outdoor activities like hiking, sightseeing, and beach hopping.

Fewer Crowds

May is considered the shoulder season in the Greek Islands, which means fewer tourists and lower prices. You’ll have more space and time to explore the islands without the crowds and queues. Some popular destinations, like Mykonos, may not be fully open in May, but you’ll still find plenty of things to do and see on other islands like Crete, Rhodes, and Karpathos.

Spring Blooms

May is a great time to see the islands in full bloom. You’ll find wildflowers, olive groves, and citrus trees in full bloom, making the landscapes even more beautiful. The island of Crete is particularly known for its spring blooms, with fields of poppies, daisies, and anemones covering the hillsides.

Festivals and Events

May is also a month of festivals and events in the Greek Islands. You can experience the local culture and traditions by attending events like the Flower Festival in Naxos, the Battle of Crete Memorial in Chania, or the Wine Festival in Santorini. These events are a great way to learn more about the history and customs of the islands and meet the locals.

In conclusion, May is a great time to visit the Greek Islands. You’ll enjoy perfect weather, fewer crowds, spring blooms, and cultural events. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or culture, the Greek Islands have something for everyone in May.

  • Aegean Airlines

Taking a ferry to the Greek Islands is a popular option for those who want to experience the journey as well as the destination. Ferries leave from various ports in Athens, including Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrion. The duration of the trip can vary greatly depending on your destination, with some islands taking just a few hours to reach, while others may take up to a full day.

Here are some of the most popular ferry companies that operate in Greece:

  • Blue Star Ferries
  • Hellenic Seaways

It’s worth noting that ferry schedules can be affected by weather conditions, so it’s a good idea to check the forecast before you travel. Additionally, some ferry routes may not operate during the low winter season, so be sure to check availability before planning your trip.

If you’re looking for a more luxurious way to travel to the Greek Islands, a cruise may be the perfect option. There are many cruise companies that offer itineraries that include stops at various Greek Islands. Some of the most popular cruise lines that operate in Greece include:

Where to Stay on the Greek Islands

When planning a trip to the Greek Islands in May, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is where to stay. With so many islands to choose from, each with its own unique character and attractions, it can be overwhelming to decide. Here are some tips to help you choose the best island and accommodation for your needs.

Consider Your Budget

Some islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, are known for their luxury hotels and high prices, while others, like Crete and Rhodes, offer more affordable options.

Look for Location

The location of your accommodation can greatly impact your experience on the island. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, consider staying in a secluded area away from the main tourist hubs. If you want to be in the heart of the action, look for accommodation in a bustling town or near popular attractions.

Choose Your Island

Each Greek Island has its own unique charm, so it’s important to choose one that suits your interests and needs. Crete is perfect for those who love history and hiking, while Mykonos is known for its lively nightlife. Santorini is famous for its stunning sunsets, and Rhodes offers a mix of ancient history and modern attractions.

Consider Your Accommodation Type

If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, consider staying in a traditional guesthouse or villa. For those who want to be pampered, there are plenty of luxury resorts and spas to choose from.

In conclusion, when choosing where to stay on the Greek Islands in May, consider your budget, location, island of choice, and accommodation type. With a little research and planning, you can find the perfect place to stay and make the most of your Greek Island adventure.

Statue of Andrew Jackson with St. Louis Cathedral in the background, French Quarter, New Orleans

May is one of your last chances to visit the "Big Easy" before the city becomes infamously muggy for the summer, and fortunately, it's also one of the cheapest times to visit New Orleans. Your best bet is to plan your trip to New Orleans during the week, if you're looking to save some money. Expect warm days, breezy nights, and plenty of Creole culture .

Exploring the French Quarter is the highlight for most tourists who visit New Orleans. This historic district brims with French-inspired architecture and heritage buildings, the city's top restaurants, art galleries, and souvenir shops. Bourbon Street buzzes with the sounds of live music all day and all night long.

You might also consider checking out the buskers outside St. Louis Cathedral at Jackson Square , listening to renowned jazz musicians on Frenchmen Street , and wandering around Royal Street .

New Orleans swirls with superstition and spirituality. Get immersed in the local zeitgeist on the New Orleans Ghost, Voodoo & Vampire Walking Tour . Under the light of the moon, a guide will take you around to some of the most eerie sites in the city, telling you stories of hauntings, spells, and mysterious happenings. It's an intriguing (and fun!) way to learn about the culture and history of this city.

Blue Mosque, Istanbul

Eager to draw business from the limited number of foreign arrivals, hotels and airlines often offer fantastic deals on trips to Istanbul in May – right before tourism skyrockets for the summer. It's a great time to take advantage of competitive pricing and enjoy vacation-worthy weather (Think: highs of 22 degrees Celsius, lows of 12 degrees Celsius, and hardly any rain) in the Turkish capital.

Even on a short itinerary, tourists can experience many of Istanbul's top-rated tourist attractions in May, as the entry lines should be relatively short. Visit the Aya Sofya , the 1,500-year-old church-turned-mosque, arguably the most recognizable landmark in the city.

Get dazzled by the Islamic art, elaborate courtyards, and highly decorative rooms of the 15th-century Topkapi Palace . Soak up the mysterious serenity (and see the haunting Medusa stones ) at the Basilica Cistern . Experience the beauty of the Blue Mosque and hear the call to prayer from one of its seven minarets at dusk.

Don't leave Istanbul without catching the UNESCO-listed Whirling Dervish Show at the Hodjapasha Dance Theater. The dizzying performance is a must-see for tourists who are interested in Turkish culture.

Playa Forum, Cancun

Aside from the occasional shower or two, Cancun has fantastic weather in May. The spring breakers have returned home, and resorts are eager to fill their rooms, dropping their prices to ultra-low rates. It'll be hot, but with Cancun's breezy, uncrowded coastline and breathtakingly clear sea, you won't sweat it.

Beaches top the list of the reasons why tourists visit this magnificent part of the Yucatan Peninsula - and for good reason. They've got wide swaths of sparkling, sugary sand; gentle surf; and ocean water in every shade of blue you could imagine. You'll likely have access to a pristine beach directly from your resort.

But don't get too caught up with the relaxing side of this cheap place to travel in May; Cancun also has some spectacular archeological sites that are worth a day trip or two. Chichén Itzá , a three-hour drive from Cancun's resort area, is one of the biggest and best-restored archeological sites in all of Mexico. The 1,000-year-old Mayan attraction has received designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the famous El Castillo pyramid.

For more Mayan ruins, book a trip to El Rey . The archeological site contains dozens of buildings and tombs that date back to AD 900. Look out for the resident iguanas that sunbathe on the structures.

Take the rest of your aquatic adventure to the Cancun Underwater Museum . The quirky diving attraction contains two seabed-based art galleries with hundreds of sculptures from artists in the U.K. and Mexico. More than just an art installation, though, these works are actually helping new coral reefs form. Check it out on a guided snorkeling or diving tour, or on a glass-bottom boat excursion.

Sunset at the Outer Banks in North Carolina

The Outer Banks is an idyllic chain of barrier islands stretching over 170 miles of the Atlantic Coast, and it boasts a slew of fantastic things to do .

Most popular as a summer destination, this pretty spot is home to pristine beaches backed by rolling sand dunes. You'll want to pack a camera as well as a picnic. Be warned: the water won't be very warm in May, but temperatures range in the high 60s and low 70s Fahrenheit, so you'll be more than comfortable on the sand.

Since May is still the off-season, you'll be able to score some great rates on vacation rentals that people clamor over at least a year before the summer season begins. The earlier in May the better for deals.

If you'd rather stay at one of the best resorts in the Outer Banks, now is the time to do it; rates are affordable, and you'll have your pick of the top rooms. Head to Avon , Rondanthe , Frisco , or Waves if you're looking to rent, or head to Nag's Head or Kitty Hawk if you fancy a hotel stay.

Summer traffic to the island is one of the major complaints for travelers to the Outer Banks between June and August. Traveling in May means you'll miss out on all that mayhem by booking before the craziness begins.

The cheapest way to visit the Outer Banks is to forgo the hotels in favor of sleeping beneath the stars. If you're a fan of roughing it, there are plenty of campgrounds in the Outer Banks to choose from and, as noted earlier, May offers ideal temps (not too hot, nor too cold) to enjoy a night (or more) in the great outdoors.

View over the Alfama district, Lisbon

Looking for a deal on Lisbon? Sneak in a vacation to this beloved European city in May, just before prices jump in June, and you'll find that you can get great bang for your buck.

Between its historic attractions, top-notch restaurants, marvelous coastal location, and easygoing culture, the hilly Portuguese capital has something for everyone. Get a view of the entire city and the River Tagus at Castelo de São Jorge , one of Lisbon's most popular tourist attractions . It contains a thoughtful museum and archeological site that offer details on the history of the city.

Another Lisbon highlight is the 500-year-old Mosteiro dos Jerónimos . The UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrates the Age of Discovery and is a fantastic place to visit.

While in the neighborhood, swing by the Torre de Belém. The historic tower has a decorative façade, embellished with maritime designs, and offers lovely views of the riverfront from the top-floor terrace. It's well worth the climb up the steep spiral staircase.

The best sightseeing in Lisbon happens in the Baixa (downtown) district. Take a creaky ride 32 meters up to the Santa Justa Lift, a neo-Gothic elevator that sticks out against the rest of Lisbon's more graceful architecture.

Stroll beneath the landmark Arco de Rua Augusta to eventually reach the Praça do Comércio , a massive riverfront plaza filled with outdoor restaurants and street performers.

As you wander around the neighborhood, keep your eyes peeled for blue-and-white tiles known as azulejos. You can learn more about this unique Portuguese art form (and see some of the earliest-known tiles) at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo.

Pyramids of Giza

Few, if any, travelers don't have the Pyramids of Giza , the Sphinx , and the Valley of the Kings somewhere on their bucket list . Cross Cairo off yours this May while the temperatures around North Africa are still bearable and the shoulder season creates opportunities for travel deals.

You only need a half day to see the most remarkable pyramids in Egypt , leaving plenty of room in your itinerary to explore other sites.

Step inside the pastel pink mansion in Downtown Cairo to explore one of the best cultural attractions in the world: the Egyptian Museum . The Tutankhamun Galleries are the biggest draw at this museum, and it's one of the best places to visit in Cairo. They contain the treasures discovered in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, including Tutankhamun's death mask and sarcophagi and the pharaoh's wardrobe collection. The museum also contains quite a few mummies and a collection of ancient Egyptian jewelry that will impress even the most blinged-out tourists.

Continue time-traveling through Egypt in Cairo's other historic sites. Al-Azhar Mosque , which is more than 1,000 years old, is home to one of the oldest universities in the world. Tourists can see parts of Roman towers and tons of old churches, including the church where Mary and Jesus reportedly took shelter when male babies were being massacred by King Herod, in Coptic Cairo.

Another one of the top things to do in Cairo is touring the Citadel at the foot of the Mokattam Hills.

End your experience in this must-visit destination at Khan el-Khalili, a Middle Eastern bazaar with an endless array of shops. Here, you can find traditional souvenirs to take home, including fine textiles, perfumes, metal lampshades, and more.

Doctor's Cave Beach, Montego Bay

May is the "sixth warmest month of the year" in Montego Bay. That means you'll be facing some sticky days that reach highs in the low 30s Celsius. Considering how pristine the beaches are in this part of Jamaica, as well as the amount you'll be saving by traveling off-season, humid days won't dissuade you from visiting Montego Bay in May.

The best time to visit Montego Bay is during its high season (from December to April), as long as you don't mind big crowds and steep prices on hotels, food, and accommodations. Visiting further into spring, however, is when you'll start to find good deals, which makes it one of the best cheap places to travel in May.

May is also one of the best times to visit Montego Bay's top tourist attractions without having to share them with hundreds of other travelers. Float along the Martha Brae River in a tube or get pushed along by a guide on a bamboo raft. You can also spend a day in May at Doctor's Cave Beach , with a slew of choices for the best spot on the sand.

St. Peter's Basilica and St. Angelo Bridge in Rome

Don't want to wait in a six-hour line to visit St. Peter's Basilica , or endure unwieldy hordes of tourists at the Colosseum ? Consider planning a trip to Rome in May.

Not only will you have incredible weather for sightseeing in Rome (highs around 24 degrees Celsius, lows around 13 degrees Celsius), the pre-summer travel season brings far fewer travelers to this popular tourist destination than later in the year. You can easily get reasonable rates on hotels and activities, making this an ideal cheap place to travel in May.

With such relatively small crowds, May is the perfect time of year to check Rome off your bucket list. Visit the Colosseum , one of the top tourist atttractions in the world , to see how this Roman antiquity has gone on to inspire today's sports arenas.

Head to the world's smallest independent state, the Vatican , to see the Sistine Chapel , Vatican Library , and St. Peter's Square .

Wander around the Pantheon , a 2,000-year-old monument that features a spectacular 43-meter dome. Finally, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain -legend has it that the ritual ensures at least one return visit to the Eternal City .

Porto, Portugal

While the cheapest time of year to visit Porto is during the winter, the chilly and rainy weather can put a damper on sightseeing. Instead, consider visiting in May, when the Portuguese city is sunny and warm, and prices are far less than you'd pay during the peak of summer.

During your May vacation to Portugal, you should make a point to visit Porto's popular attractions , like Clérigos Tower, Palácio da Bolsa, Igreja de São Francisco , and the Sé . Plan to spend at least one afternoon basking along the River Douro at Cais da Ribeira , one of Porto's historic areas. Exploring the neighborhood's maze-like alleyways will make you feel like you've stepped back in time.

Porto does see some rain showers during the month of May. Fortunately, the city has lots of fun things to do indoors. Check out the renowned collection of Portuguese art from as far back as the 16th century at the Soares dos Reis National Museum . Catch a performance at the architecturally impressive Casa da Música . And dig into Porto's best cakes and pastries at Café Majestic . Its Art Nouveau design is just as sweet as its baked goods.

View of downtown Portland from the Pittock Mansion

With its epic mountains, lush green forests, and laid-back culture, the Pacific Northwest is a dream destination year-round. Budget-seekers can find great deals on one of the region's most popular cities, Portland, during the month of May. The best part? You won't have to make any trade-offs to get the great savings. The balmy springtime weather lends itself to days of exploring the great outdoors and enjoying Portland's famous attractions , like the International Rose Test Garden.

While in Portland in May, tourists can go whale watching and hike the trails at Mount Hood . Spend an afternoon enjoying the scenery at Lan Su Chinese Garden , an atmospheric botanical garden built in the style of the Ming Dynasty.

If it rains, make your way to the Portland Art Museum. It has a robust collection of Native American and Northwest art that gives you a deep sense of place.

Visitors who come to Portland in late May can take part in a very special event: the Portland Rose Festival. More than a century old, this annual celebration celebrates Portland's iconic flowers with a rose competition, fireworks, art shows, boat races, and parades. Don't miss it.

Cartagena, Columbia

May is one of the cheapest times to visit Cartagena. Piggybacking on the end of high season, this less popular month is going to be hot, so pack accordingly.

Highs hover around 89 degrees Fahrenheit, while lows rarely dip below 79, so you'll want plenty of sunscreen, hats, and UV protective clothing. The upside, though, is the amazing deals you'll find on hotels, attractions, and airfare.

Those sticky days are perfect for a beach visit, so be sure to carve out time to enjoy a day spent frolicking in the surf and building sandcastles at Bocagrande , La Boquilla, or Playa de Castillo Grande , three of the best beaches in Colombia .

Other popular things to do in Cartagena include admiring the vibrant, perfectly restored buildings of the walled city; taking a horse-drawn carriage ride; and grabbing a bite to eat or dancing in Plaza de la Trinidad .

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

May in Rio de Janeiro offers travelers large savings, few crowds, and comfortable temps (the highs hover around 79 degrees Fahrenheit, and lows dip to about 70).

You'll still be able to enjoy a day at the beach (don't miss the soft, sandy shore at Copacabana or Ipanema ) without shivering, and you won't have to don a sweater to enjoy the city's most famous tourist attractions . Not that you'd ever really get cold in Rio; its weather is ideal pretty much any time you'd want to visit.

Hike to the top of Cristo Redento r, the city's best-known landmark, behind the uniquely shaped Sugarloaf, which you can view perfectly from this perch. Hop on a cable car from Praça General Tibúrcio to the summit of Morro da Urca .

May is a fantastic month for a vacation or short road trip. Pretty much everywhere in the Lower 48 has shaken off the drab confines of winter and moved past the wet and muddy spring. The destinations we’re profile here allow you to take full advance of the pleasant temperatures and abundance of good weather. Here are 12 places in the USA that are fantastic to visit during the month of May.

United States Capitol

The District, as it's affectionately known to residents, is the epicenter of American power and national prestige. Towering landmarks to American history line the National Mall, which is also home to some of the finest museums in the world. As you consider what you want to see when visiting Washington D.C., it helps to recognize that the vast majority of significant memorials are clustered near the National Mall. In order to give yourself a bit more perspective on the city, we recommend booking a hotel in another part of the city if it’s convenient for you. Popular neighborhoods include Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and NoMa. These more residential areas are filled with great restaurants and tons of local flavor. Of course there’s nothing wrong with staying Downtown. It’s just that getting out of the federal district will really broaden your experience. May is an ideal time to visit DC as you’re past the crush of cherry blossom season and still before the uncomfortably hot and humid days in June and July.

Bourbon Street, New Orleans

The Big Easy is a place where cultures blend. World-renowned for its distinctive music, Creole heritage, and festival ethos, New Orleans is packed with affordable attractions. Start your tour in the French Quarter along the Mississippi River near Jackson Park. The nearby Presbytère is a state museum with exhibits exploring Mardi Gras and Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged the city in 2005. After spending time in the Quarter, take a streetcar west into the Garden District where you’ll encounter tree-lined boulevards with stately manors once home to aristocratic families. Audubon Park near the Loyola University campus features great walking paths. Greenwood Cemetery is worth a visit for all the elaborate aboveground tombs. When the sun goes down, head back to the French Quarter and join the party that stretches late into the night. You can enjoy all of this without spending much beyond the cost of a tram ticket! Best of all, May is a downright gorgeous month to visit New Orleans as the city’s flowers are in bloom and the daytime temperatures aren’t too high.

Windmill Island Gardens, Holland, Michigan

Like its namesake, this lovely little town is intimately associated with a tulip festival. Drawing visitors from around the Great Lakes region, Holland is a quintessential Midwestern American city with a dash of European flair. The best time to visit is, of course, when the tulips are in bloom. The annual Tulip Time Festival normally runs during first weeks in May. Ranked as one of the best small-town festivals in the United States, this is a lively affair. Holland is a good day trip from Chicago, or more easily reachable from nearby Grand Rapids. Start in town around Centennial Park and then explore the campus at Hope College. Peak into the Kruizenga Art Museum before heading downtown. Central Holland is basically three streets where you will find all the shops, cafes, and restaurants. Walk the town and consider stopping into Butch’s Dry Dock or the Alpenrose Restaurant. The latter has a Bavarian motif and feels like an authentic German bakery. North of town is Windmill Island Gardens, a must-see during Tulip season.

Zion National Park main canyon

Zion National Park is tucked into Southwest Utah, not far from St. George. Zion has a unique geography that supports many different habitats, giving the park an unusual diversity of plant and animal species. The best options for travel are to arrive from Las Vegas or St. George, Utah. The small town of Springdale is located just outside the park boundaries and has a number hotels and guest houses. As with the other parks on our list, Zion National Park is open all year. Getting around Zion is best accomplished with a car; however, there are some public transportation options available, including a shuttle service into Springdale. If you’re entering the park via Springdale, stop at the Zion Nature Center and Zion History Museum located near the entrance. Chicago city skyline from North Lakeshore Drive

Thanks in part to its location on the western shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago grew from a small trading outpost to America's 3rd-largest city. Chicago is a fabulous city and visitors cannot help but marvel at all it has to offer. Whether you're looking for great architecture, food, museums, recreation, or something else, chances are you will find it in Chicago. The Chicago River runs through the heart of the city and the Chicago Riverwalk's network of walking paths offer some of the best views of the city's amazing skyline. You can hop on and simply start walking, or choose some sections to stroll based on where you're going. One recommendation is to visit the area near Wacker Drive, the Franklin-Orleans Street Bridge, and the Wells Street Bridge. There you can get some great photos where the river curves a bit before heading out to Lake Michigan. Another prime place to go is Adler Planetarium, which has a long circular walking path offering an ideal view back towards the Loop. You can visit the planetarium, the Field Museum, and Shedd Aquarium while you’re at it. May is a great time to visit Chicago given temperatures are consistently mild and the you'll escape the high humidity that tends to characterize summer in Chicago.

Roanoke is the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located in Southwest Virginia, Roanoke has a markedly different feel when compared to other cities on our list. You'll be pleasantly surprised to find, however, there is a lot going on in Roanoke. Start your visit at the Taubman Museum of Art. Randall Stout designed the gallery space in a modernist style with long flowing curves. The museum’s collection features more than 2,000 works from prominent 19th- and 20th-century American artists. Nearby, the Science Museum of Western Virginia has fun, hands-on exhibits great for people of all ages. One of Roanoke's most famous attractions is the Mill Mountain Star. Known as the "Hollywood Sign of the East Coast," it is the world’s largest freestanding illuminated star. At night, Mill Mountain is a great vantage point from which to see the town below. As the city's most beloved landmark, a visit to Roanoke wouldn't be complete if you miss your chance to stop at the star. Whether you enjoy history and culture, art and architecture, landscapes and natural wonders, or just good old-fashioned American charm, Virginia is the place for you and Roanoke is one fine town to visit in May.

River Street in Savannah, Georgia

Atlanta may get an outsized share of attention, but coastal Savannah should not be underestimated. A broad range of artistic styles and tastes are on display. Begin your tour in Forsyth Park where the dense summertime canopy makes for a thoroughly romantic setting. Near the northeast corner of the park is Savannah College of Art and Design. The galleries there are filled with works by talented students pushing the boundaries of various aesthetic forms and trying to make a name for themselves. Visit the nearby Mercer Williams House Museum to see the mansion vividly portrayed in John Berendt’s bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Work your way towards the river and the Savannah City Market. Often described as the Savannah’s "art and soul," the galleries here are a must-see. Finally, allow yourself some time to explore this most Southern of towns and draw in its wonderful artistic sensibilities.

Bellagio Fountain and Las Vegas Strip at night

Las Vegas is a town with something for everyone. There's amazing natural landscapes in Red Rock Canyon. Monumental engineering at the Hoover Dam. And of course, the glitz and glamor of the world's swankiest casinos. South Las Vegas Boulevard, known locally as The Strip, is where you'll find all the best casinos and entertainment in Las Vegas. Anyone who visits Vegas is going to spend time along the Strip. During its heyday, Downtown Las Vegas was where the action happened. Today, you can experience this legacy at the Fremont Street Experience. Once known as Glitter Gulch, Fremont Street is a popular performance and entertainment venue. Under a barrel vault canopy, visitors can take a ride on the zip line or hunt for souvenirs. As casinos have improved their entertainment options and incorporated the latest in digital projection technology, lighting, and sound effects, Vegas shows have become enormous spectacles that will leave you in awe. Big touring acts typically play limited runs so plan ahead. There are also a number of Cirque du Soleil shows and other regular performances running at the different casino resorts. If you've never been to a Cirque performance, do you yourself a favor a book a ticket.

Lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge

Bright lights, broad avenues, and an irresistible allure help make New York City arguably the greatest city in the world. Sure there's London, Paris, and Tokyo, but none of those places match the frenetic energy of a city seemingly perched on the edge of danger. New York's rough and tumble attitude belies a tenderness that comes through in surprising ways. In high-density places like Manhattan, you'll have no trouble getting around via public transportation. Even if it's a bit more challenging in the outer boroughs, New York City is easily navigable by combining transportation options. New York is arguably the one place in the entire United States with a comprehensive public transportation system comparable to those found in major European and Asian cities. First-time visitors to New York City can easily lose themselves in the glass and steel, the frenetic pace of a city rushing towards the next big thing. New York City is vast and simply impossible to cover in a limited time. No matter what you're searching for, you can find it in New York City. We know that we once you visit, you won't want to leave. Pay a visit to the Big Apple in May before the high temperatures and humidity turn the city into a veritable sauna.

San Antonio River Walk

There's plenty going on deep in the heart of Texas. The state's outsized land area is matched only by its outsized attitude. Texans are fiercely proud. Many still consider the Lone Star State a country unto itself. If you're looking to get a feel for Lone Star culture, there's few better places than San Antonio. This lovely destination that won't break your bank account has heaps of Texas charm and a vast array of great attractions. San Antonio's relatively compact city center affords ample opportunity for exploration. The city's famed River Walk is a network of trails lined with restaurants, shops, and green spaces winding alongside the San Antonio River. An integral part of the city, recent efforts to cultivate and promote investment in the River Walk have helped turn the downtown sections into a hugely popular venue for local gatherings. With 15 miles of continuous trail, there are dozens of interesting and popular spots along the way. Find the Briscoe Western Art Museum with its wide range of art and artifacts commemorating the culture of the American West. Snap a few pictures of Rosita's Bridge and then cross over to explore La Villita Historic Arts Village. At night go for a drink at Casa Rio, the Rainforest Café, or the Coyote Ugly Saloon.

Downtown Nashville, Tenessee

The Grand Ole Opry may be Nashville's most well-known institution; but it's far from the only thing to experience in this exciting travel destination. Music is part and parcel of this Southern city. Nashville has connections to fabled country stars such as Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt, and Earl Scruggs. Jimi Hendrix was a regular at Club Del Morocco. Otis Redding, Little Richard, and Etta James all called Nashville home at one time or another. That's not all either. Nashville boasts the only full-scale replica of the original Greek Parthenon in Athens. Central Tennessee is replete with dozens of great distilleries, many whose operations extend well back to the heady days of Prohibition and genuine bootlegging. Whether it is arts and entertainment, sporting events, great educational opportunities, or just a down right good time, you can find it in Nashville. We're confident that if nothing else, Nashville's many parks and great recreation areas will be there to welcome you. Pack your bags and come explore beautiful Nashville, Tennessee, a great destination to visit in May.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is the northernmost part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Houghton is the region's main city and is served by Houghton County Memorial Airport. Once you arrive, work your way up to Copper Harbor at the very northern tip of the Keweenaw. From there, you can enjoy Brockway Mountain Drive, a 9-mile scenic road leading west away from Copper Harbor. Brockway Mountain Drive is the highest paved road between Rockies and Alleghenies. It is also one of the best places to visit on a refreshing springtime road trip in May. If you happen to be near Brockway Mountains around sunrise or sunset, the views are heavenly. Brockway Mountain Drive is a seasonal road and it is possible for a late season's snowfall. Nevertheless, the views from the highest points on this road extend up to 50 miles on clear days and are well worth the trek.
