TURIN, Italy (AP) — Novak Djokovic ended the year just as he started it — by setting records.

The top-ranked Djokovic won a record-breaking seventh ATP Finals title on Sunday with a straight-set victory over home favorite Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic took 1 hour, 43 minutes to win 6-3, 6-3 as the Serbian continues to reach new heights at the age of 36.

He started 2023 with a record-extending 10th Australian Open title and went on to claim his 23rd Grand Slam singles trophy at the French Open, breaking Rafael Nadal’s mark. Djokovic, who lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz, also won the U.S. Open .

“One of the best seasons I’ve had in my life, no doubt,” Djokovic said. “To crown it with a win against a hometown hero in Jannik, who has played amazing tennis this week, is phenomenal.”

Djokovic entered Sunday’s final tied with Roger Federer on six titles at the season-ending tournament for the year’s top eight players.

And he stretched out his arms and beamed broadly after clinching his seventh when Sinner double-faulted.

The victory had echoes of the clinical way Djokovic dispatched second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday’s semifinal encounter.

“I’m very proud of the performances these last two days against Alcaraz and Sinner, probably the best two players in the world next to me and (Daniil) Medvedev at the moment, and the way they have been playing I had to step it up,” Djokovic said.

“I had to win the matches and not wait for them to hand me the victory and that’s what I’ve done. I think I tactically played different today than I have in the group stage against Jannik, and just overall it was a phenomenal week.”

It was his fourth win over Sinner, who had recorded a first-ever victory against Djokovic in the group stage in Turin and was the first Italian to reach the final.

But Djokovic was in imperious form on Sunday and won 14 straight points from the end of the first set to the third game of the second to leave him firmly in control and subdue the Turin crowd.

Djokovic had already secured the year-end No. 1 ranking for a record-extending eighth time by winning his opening match at the ATP Finals.

After this tournament, Djokovic will become the first player to hold the No. 1 ranking for 400 weeks, with Roger Federer at 310 the only other man to eclipse the 300-week mark.

It was also only the second time in the last 15 years that a player has made the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals. The only previous occasion was when Djokovic did it in 2015.

Sinner came into the final having won all of his matches in Turin and backed by a fervent home crowd, who had dreams of him becoming the first Italian to win the tournament in its 54-year history.

But the 22-year-old Sinner could offer little in response to a master class from Djokovic, especially in a blistering first set that lasted just 38 minutes and saw the Serbian win 20 of 22 service points. Djokovic also served up 13 aces during the match.

“Congratulations to you (Novak) for this week and not only: you started the season by winning and you ended it by winning, you won three Slams and many other tournaments,” Sinner said. “What else is there to say? You’re an inspiration not only for all those watching, but especially for the players.

“I also want to thank my team … we saw also today that I can still improve a lot but we can look at the positive things from this season. When we started the year I was one player and now I’m another. Thanks to you who have helped me understand so many things.”

BWF World Tour Finals 2022: Daily schedule and how to watch live

Check out our preview of the events on each day and what to look forward to in Bangkok, Thailand, from 7–11 December 2022.

Chen Yufei

The end of the badminton season is here, and with it the BWF World Tour Finals 2022 .

Only the best players on tour this season have qualified for the invitational event, with eight athletes or pairs taking part in each of the five events in Bangkok, Thailand, at the Nimibutr Arena from 7–11 December 2022.

It will be the second time in under two years the Thai capital has hosted the season-ending tournament, having also held the 2020 Finals in January 2021.

The Nimibutr Arena previously hosted the annual Thailand Open from 2012 to 2018.

Check out our daily preview below.

Times listed are in local time, which is UTC/GMT +7 hours.

  • Axelsen, Yamaguchi, Zheng / Huang claim BWF Player of the Year 2022 awards

Day 1 – Wednesday 7 December: Clash of world's top two in women's singles

There is one stand-out group from the 10 across the five events – Group A in women's singles , which features world number 1 (and world champion) Yamaguchi Akane of Japan, world number 2 and reigning Finals champion An Seyoung of Republic of Korea, and world number 4 (and Olympic champion) Chen Yufei of People's Republic of China.

On the first day, the former two will go head-to-head in a repeat of the 2022 World Championships semi-finals, when Yamaguchi triumphed in straight games.

Due to the rules governing match-ups, any players drawn into the same group as their national compatriots will also play each other on the opening day.

That means tantalising clashes between Jonatan Christie and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia in men's singles, Zhang Shuxian / Zheng Yu and Chen Qingchen / Jia Yifan of China in women's doubles, and Ratchanok Intanon and Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand in women's singles are also on the cards.

In men's singles, Group B has put together the world number 3 ( Loh Kean Yew of Singapore), number 4 ( Chou Tien-chen of Chinese Taipei), and number 5 (Christie) – and today Christie plays Loh. With world number 2 Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia having not qualified from the tournament, all three of Loh, Chou, and Christie will have an eye on the number 2 ranking.

  • Men's doubles Group B - Liu / Ou (CHN) vs Chia / Soh (MAS)

Day 3 – Friday 9 December: Axelsen faces dark horse Prannoy

India's H.S. Prannoy is ranked 12th in the world behind counterparts Lakhsya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth , but is the only man from his country in the Tour Finals after a successful season in which he finished runner-up at the Swiss Open and reached two other tour semi-finals.

On paper, that makes him the dark horse in a match-up against Axelsen in Group A of the men's singles. Axelsen holds a 5–1 career head-to-head record against the Indian, but an upset victory could turn the entire group around in the last set of round-robin matches.

Chou faces Christie in Group B with those world ranking points at stake, while Chen Yufei takes on An with semi-final qualification on the line in Group A of the women's singles.

Day 4 – Saturday 10 December: Semi-finals

The round-robin is over and the top two from each group will have qualified for the weekend's semi-finals.

Of note, it would be a surprise if Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong were not still involved at this stage of the mixed doubles competition. Zheng and Huang have qualified for the semi-finals in all nine of their Tour events this year – and all 11 of their major international tournaments, including the World Championships and Asian Championships.

Djokovic finished second in the group with a 2-1 record thanks to wins over Rune ( 7-6 (4), 6-7 (1), 6-3 ) and Hubert Hurkacz ( 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1 ). Hurkacz had replaced Tsitsipas, who withdrew from the tournament three games into his second match against Rune.

In the Red Group, three players finished with 2-1 records, with Zverev unlucky not to make the semi-finals despite only losing one match. Alcaraz finished top courtesy of straight set wins over Rublev ( 7-5, 6-2 ) and Medvedev ( 6-4, 6-4 ), while Medvedev took the remaining qualification spot, having also beaten Rublev ( 6-4, 6-2 ) and squeezing past Zverev ( 7-6 (7), 6-4 ).

The semi-finals saw Alcaraz come up against Djokovic, while Sinner took on Medvedev.

Despite having played several epic already this year, Djokovic v Alcaraz was a straightforward affair, with the Serbian winning 6-3, 6-2 over his biggest rival this year. Sinner v Medvedev was more competitive, however, with Medvedev winning a tight second set tiebreak to force a decider, before falling off to lose 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1.

With Sinner having beaten Djokovic in the round-robin, the Italian was faced with a rematch if he wanted to win the biggest title of his career in front of a packed out home crowd. Unfortunately for the fans, lightening did not strike twice in Turin, as Djokovic put on one of the best finals performances of his career, winning 6-3, 6-3 to claim his seventh Nitto ATP finals title.

How much prize money can players win at the ATP Finals?

The 2023 ATP Finals will yet again break tennis prize money records, with a whopping $15,000,000 prize money on offer. Here’s how the payouts are broken down:

  • Alternate – $152,500
  • Participation fee – $325,500
  • Round-robin win – $390,000
  • Semi-final win – $1,105,000
  • Final win – $2,201,000

This means that an undefeated champion at the 2023 ATP Finals would have been awarded $4,801,500 in prize money. However, since Novak Djokovic dropped his second round-robin match against Jannik Sinner, the Serbian did not claim the maximum prize money.

Instead, Djokovic walked away from the 2023 ATP Finals with a cool $4,411,500 for his efforts.

  • Round-robin win – 200 points
  • Semi-final win – 400 points
  • Final win – 500 points

If a player wins the tournament without losing, they will receive 1,500 ranking points. Again, since Djokovic won the tournament but lost one round-robin match, he finishes with 1,300 points from this week.
