1989 tour movie watch

Taylor Swift's Christmas gift for you is here. Well, if you're an Apple Music subscriber, at least. The pop star's world tour documentary for her massive hit album 1989 is now available to stream .

As Swift herself announced earlier this week , the special is exclusively available on Apple's streaming music service. The documentary is directed by Jonas Akerlund, who also helmed On the Run Tour: Beyoncé and Jay Z . If you're looking for some diversity, it's not just two hours of Taylor Swift — it features performances from Selena Gomez, John Legend, Fetty Wap, and others. The 1989 World Tour has been running since this May, and it came to a close just a week ago.

The partnership between Apple and Swift shows just how far the two have come since the mega-star published an open letter criticizing the company's royalty policies during its three-month trial period. Both sides quickly made up , and now they're all making lots of money together. 1989 itself has been streaming on Apple music since June.

18 things we learned from Taylor Swift's '1989 World Tour' documentary

Taylor Swift’s giddy cries of “Please welcome to the stage…” are still ringing in our ears, but the time has come: After 85 shows and seemingly endless special guests, the 1989 World Tour is finally over.

It won’t soon be forgotten, though, in part because The 1989 World Tour (Live) documentary is now available to stream on Apple Music, giving broke Swifties who didn’t attend the tour a chance to experience the magic. But even if you did catch the tail of this comet, you still might learn something new from the documentary, which intersperses full, sparkling, neon-tinged footage from Swift’s Sydney, Australia stop with commentary from the star, and clips from other cities’ shows.

For those who don’t have Apple Music (or the 2 hours and 11 minutes required to watch the full documentary), here are 18 things we learned from The 1989 World Tour (Live) , in no particular order:

1. “Blank Space” is Swift’s favorite moment of every show

She loves playing the seductive serial dater who becomes obsessed with her boyfriends and then goes crazy. “When I wrote ‘Blank Space,’ I just thought, all right, if [the media] want[s] me to play this character … this whole image of the jet-setting, tragic mess, cool,” Swift said. “I’ll write a song from that perspective and see how you like it.” As we’ve known since 1989 came out in 2014, the song hit its mark: “It ended up being the biggest song I’ve ever had,” she said.

2. She didn’t bring special guests on stage just to brag about her squad — it was essentially a tactic to combat spoilers and keep an element of surprise every night

“Every person in the audience probably knows what costumes I’m going to wear,” Swift explained. “They could know the set list if they really wanted to, so I decided to start inviting special guests out.”

3. The remixed version of “I Knew You Were Trouble” she played on tour was phenomenal.

Okay, this is a personal opinion, but watching this funky, piano-heavy version of “Trouble” really might make you wish you’d gotten tickets to this tour, if you missed it. At least we have it on video …

4. She has Mick Jagger’s cell phone number (and uses it)

When Swift was on a hike in Nashville before that city’s concert, her dad called her. “I pick up the phone and Dad’s like, ‘My friend swears he was sitting next to Mick Jagger at lunch yesterday,’ ” Swift said. “So I text Mick, and I said, ‘Hey, are you in town? I’m playing a show tomorrow. Do you want to come out and sing “Satisfaction?””‘ He just writes back, ‘What will I wear?’ “

(We’re going to start slipping that line into every story from now on. “So I text Mick …”)

5. Losing the 2014 Grammy for Album of the Year to Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories inspired her to write 1989

“I ended up going home thinking a lot about everything,” Swift said of that 2014 evening. “[I was] thinking about where I was going, what I’d been doing. … I needed to change something. I went to bed, and I woke up at 4 in the morning and I knew what the next album needed to be: ‘I need to completely switch gears, it needs to be called 1989 … everything has to be different.’ “

6. Swift is the one who suggested Alanis Morissette “slap” her in the face while the two performed the line, “It was a slap in the face / How quickly I was replaced”

Her rationale? “Bruises heal, but the moment lasts forever.”

7. She pulled out all the stops for her special guests — including changing the color of the audience.

“We can program the bracelets to be absolutely any color,” Swift said. “So the first thing I ask them is, ‘What color do you want the audience to be?’ ” She’d be a great concierge in Panem’s Capitol, right? “Pyro is another option we provided for many of the guests,” she said.

8. She loves huggging Wiz Khalifa

“At the end of our performance, there was a hug that lasted for like four years,” Swift said. “I remember thinking, ‘I just don’t want this hug to end!’ “

9. Swift used beach towels and nail polish to explain the tour’s runway to her model friends

And Karlie Kloss secretly filmed the whole thing — including the excitement backstage.

10. Swift calls professional athletes “sports players”

“If an actor or a sports player wanted to come to the show, I’d invite them up on stage, because why not?” she said.

11. Her band can learn a song in less than an hour

And, given the fact that most of Swift’s artist guests got to perform their own songs with her, that’s a lot of different genres Swift’s band had to perfect. Kudos to them.

12. Justin Timberlake was slightly worried about the pyrotechnics

“Don’t you burn me, Taylor,” he warned.

13. Also, Swift thinks Timberlake is “our generation’s Frank Sinatra”

Hey, he does have blue eyes!

14. John Legend’s appearance happened at the very last minute

“John Legend happened to be coming to the concert just to watch it,” Swift said, “but in my head I’m like, ‘I know this show starts in 40 minutes, but I want John Legend to sing.’ ” And he did.

15. It was Swift’s idea for Miranda Lambert to emerge atop “a throne made of men”

“I was half expecting her to be like, ‘I’m not doing that,’ ” Swift said, “but she was so down.” Uh, yeah.

16. Swift got to be the sixth member of Fifth Harmony — just for a night

She had the girls teach her the choreography to “Worth It” in their dressing room, then borrowed one of Camila Cabello’s extra costumes to perform the song with the group onstage. “Camila says, ‘I have an extra costume. Do you want to dress like one of us?’ ” Swift said. “And I said, ‘Obviously.’ “

17. Mary J. Blige’s song “Doubt” really speaks to Swift

“It really hit me because I’m so doubtful of myself constantly,” Swift confessed. “No matter what I achieve … That song really struck a chord with me, and I remember thinking it would be amazing if I could ever sing that with her.” Reader, she did.

18. The end of the 1989 World Tour was extra emotional for Swift and her team because they hadn’t gotten sick of it yet

“We didn’t drag it out,” she said. “We didn’t wait til we got sick of it. We’re still in love with it.” And so, it seems, are we.

Taylor Swift's 'The 1989 World Tour' Documentary: 10 Fascinating Moments

As promised, Taylor Swift released a concert documentary about her hugely successful 1989 World Tour this holiday season. It’s appropriately titled The 1989 World Tour, and is currently streaming on Apple Music exclusively.

Centering around her tour stop in Sydney, Australia, the film is filled with live performances of songs from her blockbuster 1989 album , backstage footage, interviews with her famous friends, and narration from Swift herself.

Here are 10 fascinating moments from The 1989 World Tour documentary.

1) In the movie, Swift explains how she recruited that endless parade of special guests for her tour. “Some of the special guest appearances were planned months in advance. I would reach out and I’d say, ‘I love your music. Here’s the schedule, here are the tour dates. Which ever one you want to come to, we’d love to have you.'” Swift notes that after Mick Jagger joined her onstage, people were more likely to say yes.

2) Not all of the special guests were planned so far in advance, however. In the documentary, Swift reveals she recruited John Legend to join her onstage just 40 minutes prior to showtime after spotting him in the audience.

3) Rehearsing backstage with Alanis Morissette in one scene, we see Swift urging the singer-songwriter to mime hitting her during the lyric, “It was a slap in the face.” Taylor explains her insistence on the slap to Alanis as such: “Bruises heal, but moments last forever.”

4) Anyone who showed up at the 1989 Tour is familiar with the colorful audience bracelets that lit up in synchronization during the show. What they might not know, however, is that Swift let her guests control the bracelet colors during their visiting performances.

5) In an interview portion of the film, Lena Dunham shares her memory of Taylor playing 1989 for her pre-release date: “I made her play it over and over until she finally said, ‘I don’t want to play it anymore.'”

6) In one scene, Swift explains snagging Mick Jagger for a duet on “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” at her Nashville tour stop. “My dad’s like, ‘My friend swears he was sitting next to Mick Jagger at lunch yesterday.’ So I text Mick and I said, ‘Hey are you in town? I’m playing a show tomorrow night, do you want to come out and sing “Satisfaction”?’ And he just writes back, ‘What will I wear?'”

7) At 1:17:00, Swift’s friends — from Selena Gomez to Haim to Cara Delevingne — share stories on what a “typical hang with Taylor” is like. Hints: Dancing, and lots of cats.

8) Swift shares she wanted to duet with Mary J. Blige on “Doubt” after hearing the soul queen sing it at a Grammy party. “I’m so doubtful of myself constantly — no matter what I achieve, no matter what happens,” Swift said. “So that song struck a chord with me. I remember thinking, ‘That would be amazing if I could ever sing that with her.'” And in L.A., they did.

9) Swift heaps massive praise on her “Mirrors” duet partner in one scene. “I think Justin Timberlake is the closest thing our generation has to Frank Sinatra ,” she said, comparing one actor-singer to another. “I honestly think he’s one of the greatest musicians of our time.”

10) Post credits fun! Taylor shares her plans for 2016, saying, “Maybe I’ll jut eat carbs for the next seven months. I don’t have to wear any crop tops.” She also stands in front of the camera holding her two cats while one of them desperately tries to escape. The film ends with the words, “No cats were harmed in the making of this tour. Just one pop star.”

Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour film now available exclusively on Apple Music

Avatar for Chance Miller

As expected, Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour documentary is now available exclusively on Apple Music. Apple and Swift announced the partnership last weekend , marking a continuation of the growing relationship the two parties have developed since the launch of Apple Music this summer.

The 1989 World Tour film was filmed primarily in front of 76,000 fans during her stop at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Nov. 28. The film features the entire performance of Swift’s show that night, as well as a variety of other footage. There are backstage clips from the entire tour, clips of rehearsals with the plethora of artists Swift brought out during the tour, and interviews with Swift and other members of her entourage.

Furthermore, Swift has completely taken over the “New” tab in Apple Music. As you can see in the image above, the New tab shows nothing besides the pop star’s music and videos in celebration of the documentary’s release. Apple has done this a few times in the past, most recently with the release of Coldplay’s new album, but never to this extent.

Taylor Swift and Apple have had a blossoming relationship since the introduction of Apple Music. It all began when Apple announced wouldn’t pay artists for the 3 month free trial period, which prompted  Swift to write an open letter to Apple  asking the company to respect artists. Apple executive Eddie Cue then responded with a tweet announcing that Apple would change its policy, leading Swift to release  1989 exclusively on Apple Music .

Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour documentary is available now exclusively to Apple Music subscribers . View the trailer below:

Apple sure does love its mundane, mainstream music.

' src=

And me too.

' src=

Why does music have to be from an obscure group that few know of for it to be enjoyable? What’s wrong with enjoying both the well known and lesser known?

' src=

Well, factually speaking, if we use your terminology only “few know” of the lesser known, therefore not many people are out there enjoying it. I would say in light of the post I’ve already made, that’s wrong. Additionally, the fact that very end-spectrum words such as “obscure” are brought into the fray in response to Don’s post is interesting, but I have observed the kind of view from some that if it isn’t all encompassing and bigger than Jesus, it’s “obscure”, which, beyond not always even being true, subliminally also stands for “bad”, “not worth hearing”, etc………… have you taken the time to consider this and the fact that what we have here is the polar opposite of “think different” and every step the digital music revolution has made over the past decade+ ? This is like people moving to Mars because they don’t like politics, and then electing a president.

' src=

Because it’s sh*t.

' src=

I thought the some thing too, at first. Then again, Apple’s strategy has always bent aim for the popular market and not cater to other less-popular segments. If diversity can fit their desires then that makes it all the better but Apple aims for the meaty part of the market with little concern for the less-popular segments. Look how well aiming for 100% of the market has worked for Microsoft.

' src=

beats the shit out of the Beatles.

' src=

I agree with the mundane and mainstream part but Apple does give a lot of exposure to indie music and movies on the front page of its music and movies sections of its store, far more than any other service.

' src=

Sorry not everyone shares your enlightened taste in music – I bet your playlists are the best!

' src=

Great tour! Taylor Swift is amazing and was a great partnership for Apple…

“Furthermore, Swift has completely taken over the “New” tab in Apple Music. As you can see in the image above, the New tab shows nothing besides the pop star’s music and videos in celebration of the documentary’s release. Apple has done this a few times in the past, most recently with the release of Coldplay’s new album, but never to this extent.”

More than a little tacky, and certainly anti-progress; one would assume at this point in the game, 15 years into the digital music movement, we don’t still want the SAME EXACT THING (a very specific tiny window of music being shoved down our throats at the expense of everything else) that the ancient FM bastions provide. Apparently some believe otherwise. :(

' src=

…what’s your point?

It’s not the whole freaking tour though. We don’t get to see her actually perform with any of the amazing guests she had, just freaking clips!! I want to see the whole thing!!! :'( whyyyyyyyyy :'(

' src=

Apple Royally screwed this one up! way to go guys! So it’s not available on the new AppleTV in any way. it’s trapped inside the lame Apple Music App where you cannont AirPlay it to an AppleTV, and really take take home this screw up… they trap the video inside a 3″ cover-art window within the music app and it can’t be maximized even… so I’m sitting here on a 12.9″ iPad Pro watching a 3″ tiny window…. Great job boys!

' src=

It shows up on my 4th gen Apple TV but the music app doesn’t allow me to maximize the screen or do PIP which is lame.

Hmm….. Just watched it on ATV4

' src=

It’s definitely curious that full screen mode is not allowed, but I don’t think it was a screw-up. I’m leaning towards it being done intentionally in order to drive actual purchase of the concert at some point, with the additional incentives, including full screen mode. Either that or buy an AT4 for full screen mode. Same end result: added profits for both Apple and Taylor getting her cut as well.

Recommend watching her Beats1 interview under the “New” tab of AM. Smart girl. And looking insanely sexy af, too. Never really found her attractive before, but found myself having a hard time focusing on what she was saying. Yowza.

I was in an Apple store this last Friday and the promo for this is the screen saver on every single display in the place. It would be difficult to go into one of their stores and not know they have something going with Taylor Swift.

' src=

I love you taylor swift…………..

' src=

Apple really did screw this one up — not only is it PITA to Airplay from any device to your Apple TV, they also failed to launch a decent App for the Apple Music service as to easily access content using existing iTunes account. See options below — hope this helps.

How to get 1989 Live World Tour to play on Apple TV

Option 1: Adjust resolution on Mac so you can Airplay concert to Apple TV

1. Open iTunes on Mac and subscribe to Apple Music (1989 World Tour comes with subscription)

2. Launch 1989 World Tour page in iTunes. (Link: https://itun.es/us/WrjT_ ). Any attempts to airplay will fail due to resolution error.

3. Change screen resolution settings for Mac to 1024 x 640 using app of choice. I use SwitchResX to easily adjust resolution settings — link to download here: http://www.madrau.com/srx_download/download.html

4. Once resolution has been adjusted on Mac, concert can be successfully viewed via Airplay on Apple TV.

Option 2: Merge iCloud/Apple Music accounts so you can view on existing Apple TV

1. Open iTunes on apple device and subscribe to Apple Music (1989 World Tour comes with subscription)

2. Launch 1989 World Tour page in iTunes. (Link: https://itun.es/us/WrjT_ )

3. On bottom right, click three dotted share button and choose “Add to Playlist”. This is where I was stopped by iTunes and prompted by a request to merge my iCloud music library to the Apple Music subscription. You must choose yes and merge your accounts to make this work.

4. Once your accounts are merged, click three dotted share button and choose “Add to Playlist”. Create a playlist for item so it is easily accessible in iTunes library.

5. On Apple TV:

Go to Settings -> Accounts and confirm the same Apple ID is signed in for iCloud, iTunes and App Store. Go to Settings -> Apps -> Music -> iCloud Music Library and turn ON

6. Go back to home screen on Apple TV and open Music App. Concert should be available in Recently Added/Playlist tabs.

Note: You may still experience low resolution w/ Option 2.

Plays perfect on ATV4! Not sure what the whinings about…

' src=

I think some people forget to mention they have an old school iTunes account pre iOS days they buy music and apps through, and an iCloud account for data syncing…why? I don’t know. My mom does it. (Post above yours goes into a long rant and suggests this could be the case.)

' src=

I had friends over and made plans to spend the night watching this…. Fail!! Only can watch it on my iPad Air. Can’t find a way to AirPlay

' src=

She found a new boyfriend that is not perfect again?…

' src=

Why not just put it on the iTunes store for, like, $5 or $10 or whatever floats your boat. Then nobody has to wait for it to load (as I am doing right now, and may I add it is taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r) and it would get bought enough times to make the same amount of money. Most of the people watching it are using the free trial anyway. I’m not impressed. However, I love Taylor Swift and the idea of experiencing her show again is awesome :)

' src=

Apple is ticking me off with the Airplay restrictions. Can not send this video to ATV or screen share from the mac to the atv. Apple Music has really turned me off to apple. That and Error 53. : ) Fail

Bon Jovi docuseries 'Thank You, Goodnight' is an argument for respect

Jon Bon Jovi at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., in 2013.

Hulu's docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story , spends a lot of time building up the Bon Jovi legend — exploring the band's almost unbelievable 40-plus-year run from playing hardscrabble rock clubs in New Jersey to earning platinum albums and entry into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

But what moved me most in the four-part series was something more revealing: its close look at the struggle by lead singer Jon Bon Jovi to overcome vocal problems which nearly led him to quit the band.

Footage of the singer croaking through vocal exercises, undergoing laser treatments, enduring acupuncture and finally turning to surgery is sprinkled throughout the series, which toggles back and forth between his problems in 2022 and a chronological story of the band's triumphs and tragedies from its earliest days.

Through it all, a question hangs: Will Bon Jovi ever recover enough vocal strength to lead a 40th anniversary tour?

"If I can't be the very best I can be, I'm out," he tells the cameras, still looking a bit boyish despite his voluminous gray hair at age 62. "I'm not here to drag down the legacy, I'm not here for the 'Where are they now?' tour ... I'm not ever gonna be the Fat Elvis ... That ain't happening."

Filmmaker Gotham Chopra — who has also directed docuseries about his father, spiritualist Deepak Chopra, and star quarterback Tom Brady — digs deeply into the band's history, aided by boatloads of pictures, video footage and early recordings provided by the group.

Chopra gets folks from the group's tight inner circle to speak up, including former manager Doc McGhee and guitarist Richie Sambora, who quit the band in 2013. ("Are we telling the truth, or are we going to lie, what are we going to do?" Sambora cracks to his offscreen interviewer. "Let's figure it out.")

But anyone expecting gossipy dish will walk away disappointed. Even major scandals in the band's history are handled with care, including the firing of founding bassist Alec John Such in 1994 (and the admission that his replacement, Hugh McDonald, already had been secretly playing bass parts on their albums for years), drummer Tico Torres' stint in addiction treatment and Sambora's decision to quit midway through a tour in 2013, with no notice to bandmates he had performed alongside for 30 years.

Sambora's explanation: When issues with substance use and family problems led him to miss recording sessions, Bon Jovi got producer John Shanks to play more guitar on their 2013 record What About Now . And Sambora was hurt.

"[Bon Jovi] had the whole thing kinda planned out," Sambora says, "which basically was telling me, um, 'I can do it without you.'"

Building a band on rock anthems

The docuseries shows how young New Jersey native John Bongiovi turned a job as a gofer at legendary recording studio The Power Station – owned by a cousin — into a recording of his first hit in the early 1980s, Runaway . His song eventually caught the ear of another little-known artist from New Jersey called Bruce Springsteen.

"The first demo I got of Jon's was a good song," says Springsteen, a longtime friend of Bon Jovi. "I mean, Jon's great talent is these big, powerful pop rock choruses that just demand to be sung by, you know, 20,000 people in an arena."

Rock Star Jon Bon Jovi Comes Full 'Circle'

Music Interviews

Rock star jon bon jovi comes full 'circle'.

Thank You, Goodnight shows the band really took off by honing those rock anthems with songwriter Desmond Child, while simultaneously developing videos that showcased their status as a fun, rollicking live band. Hits like You Give Love a Bad Name, Livin' on a Prayer and Wanted: Dead or Alive made them MTV darlings and rock superstars.

Through it all, the singer and bandleader is shown as the group's visionary and spark plug, open about how strategically he pushed the band to write hit songs and positioned them for commercial success.

"It wasn't as though I woke up one morning and was the best singer in the school, or on the block, or in my house," he tells the camera, laughing. "I just had a desire and a work ethic that was always the driving force."

I saw that dynamic up close in the mid-1990s when I worked as a music critic in New Jersey, spending time with Jon Bon Jovi and the band. Back then, his mother ran the group's fan club and was always trying to convince the local rock critic to write about her superstar son – I was fascinated by how the band shrugged off criticisms of being uncool and survived changing musical trends, led by a frontman who worked hard to stay grounded.

Bon Jovi was always gracious and willing to talk; he even introduced me to then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman at one of his legendary Christmas charity concerts. (And in a crazy coincidence, the band's backup singer Everett Bradley is an old friend from college.)

I think the docuseries captures Bon Jovi's skill at leading the group through challenges musical and otherwise — from metal's slow fade off the pop charts to the rise of grunge rock — something the singer rarely gets credit for achieving.

Still, much of Thank You, Goodnight feels like an extended celebration of the band and its charismatic frontman, leavened by his earnest effort to regain control of his voice. If you're not a Bon Jovi fan, four episodes of this story may feel like a bit much (I'd recommend at least watching the first and last episodes.)

More than anything, the docuseries feels like an extended argument for something Bon Jovi has struggled to achieve, even amid million selling records and top-grossing concert tours – respect as a legendary rock band.

The audio and digital versions of this story were edited by Jennifer Vanasco .

Screen Rant

The holdovers' streaming popularity is a reminder to watch robin williams' $236 million classic movie from 35 years ago.

The streaming popularity of the 2023 film The Holdovers is a sign that one particular Robin Williams movie classic deserves a rewatch after decades.

  • The Holdovers, a popular streaming h`it, draws parallels to Dead Poets Society in its setting and themes.
  • Directed by Alexander Payne, the film features an original story and characters penned by David Hemingson.
  • The Holdovers garnered critical acclaim, earning an Oscar for Da'Vine Joy Randolph and nominations in various categories.

The Holdovers is getting popular on streaming, and it can serve as a reminder to check out a classic Robin Williams movie from a couple of decades ago. Hitting theaters in 2023, The Holdovers charmed audiences with its story of curmudgeonly professor Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) and his relationship with his student Angus (Dominic Sessa) as the young man ends up having to stay at their New England boarding school over winter break. The film is now available to stream on Prime Video, and has become relatively successful since its streaming release.

Directed by Alexander Payne, The Holdovers tells an original story with original characters. Its script is penned by David Hemingson, whose previous work includes writing for TV series such as Uncle Buck , Black-ish , Traffic Light , and The Deep End . Despite the fact that The Holdovers is not adapted from another source, the film bears a number of similarities to a movie that came years before it.

The Holdovers Cast & Character Guide

The holdovers is similar to robin williams' 1989 movie dead poets society, the holdovers & dead poets society have similar settings & themes.

In more ways than one, The Holdovers bears similarity to the 1989 Robin Williams film Dead Poets Society . Like The Holdovers , Dead Poets Society takes place at an all-boys boarding school in New England. The Vermont setting of the fictional Welton Academy bears similarity to the halls of Barton Academy, which Paul and Angus traverse on their snowy winter break.

Click here to watch The Holdovers

In addition to their settings, the main character relationships are fundamentally similar in the two films. In Dead Poets Society , a group of adolescent boys finds themselves extraordinarily moved by the teachings of their English teacher, John Keating, mirroring the relationship between Angus and Hunham in The Holdovers . Even the arcs of the two films are similar, with the endings of The Holdovers and Dead Poets Society both seeing the main teachers ending up as martyrs when they are fired from their boarding school positions. In both cases, the cause of their firing is directly related with the main reason why the men helped their young students.

How Holdovers' Oscars & Critical Success Compare To Dead Poets Society

Both films were nominated for academy awards.

Both The Holdovers and Dead Poets Society were positively received at the time of their release. The Holdovers received great reviews and an almost-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and an also-favorable 92% audience approval rating. The film also earned an Oscar for first-time nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph, for her work playing supporting character Mary Lamb. While Randolph’s Oscar was the only Academy Award win, The Holdovers also wound up nominated for four other Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Actor for Giamatti.

Dead Poets Society has a slightly lower Rotten Tomatoes rating, with an 84% Tomatometer. Its audience approval rating is identical at 92%. Dead Poets Society was nominated for one fewer Oscar than The Holdovers , getting a nod for four awards rather than five. Dead Poets Society ended up winning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Its other nominations included Best Picture, Best Director for Peter Weir, and Best Actor for Williams.

The real comparison point between The Holdovers and Dead Poets Society will come with time. Though it was released 35 years ago, Dead Poets Society has truly stood the test of time, as it is still a revered film today. Its final scene is arguably one of the most moving moments in cinema, earning what could otherwise be a saccharine ending. If The Holdovers is still talked about a couple of decades from now, only then will it be able to be truly compared with the marvelous Dead Poets Society .

The Holdovers

The Holdovers is a comedy-drama film starring Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham, a prep academy professor hated by peers and students alike. Stuck at the academy for the holidays with no family or friends to visit, he finds himself in the company of a bright-but-troublemaking young student named Angus and the school's head cook, Mary. Together, the three will create a makeshift family as they bond during the holiday season.
