Ambient Temp Sensor Location

I just got the overhead console for my truck. I am going to install it probably next weekend. i was just wondering if anyone can tell me where the actual sensor is that reads the temp? and will the wiring that i need to plug my new harness for the console be there?

thanks rz0mbie. i had seen that post before and planned to use it for some direction when i did it. i am just leary about cutting the headliner myself.

Ambient Air Temp Sensor Location

Can't say if all trucks are the same but on my 2016 3500 I believe it is mounted behind the drivers side mirror. The mirror glass 'snaps' out exposing the guts behind it. Swing your mirror glass all the way in and peek in behind the glass and you can see it. YouTube has a video of a guy replacing one. -Ej-  

Isn't the ambient air temp sensor in the driver side mirror arm?  

Sensor is mounted in the bottom of the driver side mirror arm. The sensor was replaced, codes were cleared (reset by removing battery cables). MIL light is off but temp reading is still off (reading -40 F). Is there anyway to reset the temp on the instrument cluster without using a code scanner (dealer wanted $100 just to connect their scanner/computer & auto parts place will not clear codes/reset computer)? Many thanks for your assistance so far and any more I can get is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!  

I'm thinking you have an open circuit and your MIL light will be back.Try unplugging the sensor and see if it still reads -40.I'm not an FCA Tech but I know that coolant sensors(yeah I know we're talking ambient air sensors) used to read -38 when unplugged.I'd be looking at the mirror pivot.  

I have the same truck as you and took it to the dealer and they set mine. It was only out about 5 deg.  

Following up on this post. I installed aftermarket black side view mirrors on my 13' sport. I had the factory tow mirrors on with the puddle light, turn signal lamps, and the ambient temp sensor on the arm. The aftermarket mirrors look great and everything including the lights and power mirror functions as it should but the drivers side mirror did not come with the temperature sensor and now the MIL light is on and it says -40 degrees. The dealer told me that I should not be driving my vehicle around and that it could potentially cause major damage to my engine not having the correct ambient air temp reading. My questions: -Can this really mess up my engine? -Is there an alternative location to put a new air sensor? Perhaps behind the grill? Under the hood somewhere? -If there's no alternative location for the sensor is it possible I could remove it from my original OEM tow mirrors and splice the wiring in the plug on the new mirror that plugs in the control module? I'm trying to avoid having to buy the factor mirrors and returning this aftermarket mirror that I bought. The difference in price is ridiculous.

I am having problem with my transmission shifting when the ambient air is reading below zero and it 80 outside is anyone else having this problem.  

Haven't heard of that. If you're getting a reading of -40 the sensor in the mirror is probably bad or it has a loose connection.  

Has anyone repositioned their ambient air temp sensor? Im having a shifting issue when my truck reads below -27 celsius. I live in the Yukon so this temp isn't anything out of the normal. Once my truck reads -27 or below it has a delay in the 2-3 shift have to hit around 60km/h for it to shift and if i let off it down shifts me. Took the truck to the dealer today since its -30 out. took their transmission guy for a ride and sure enough it did it. He said it would be some trial and error to figure out whats wrong if anything. Im not to keen on having a tech guess and rack up a nice big bill at the dealer. He did mention repositioning the ambient air temp sensor or tricking it to think its warmer. 2012 ram 1500 SLT 6spd transmission  

Does anyone know where the Outside temperature sensor is own a 2013 dogs ram 2500 diesel outdoorsman some said it was in the mirrors someone also told me could be in the grill I have not found it in either spot Some advice would be helpful because it is Throwing my check engine light off and causing my Auto start not to work  

It's in the drivers side mirror.

Problem: 130 degrees T on dashboard computer and check engine light (CEL) on. Checking code - P0071 - Ambient Air Temperature (AAT) sensor Circuit "A" Range/Performance. It may screw your AC working correctly, since Body control module receives info from AAT sensor and many other sources to coordinate other modules in your vehicle. My case - everything was working fine, except above mentioned Temperature 120-130 degrees and CEL. Solution. 90% it is your sensor faulty, could be bad wiring or corroded terminals (however, it could pull slightly different codes then P0071). To make sure, you could check voltage using voltage tester, to verify if your AAT sensor receives power. That AAT sensor located in driver mirror, no other sensors under the hood, regarding this problem (some mistaken it with intake air T sensor). For what I know, there are 3 ways to fix it: 1) Change the whole driver mirror (just make sure, new one got that AAT inside as well), I was checking around - $90+ cons - most expensive and you will need to remove several inside door panels to get to mirror blink and AAT sensor connectors 2) Replace AAT sensor itself, if you get lucky (I didn't), find pull a part place or similar scrape parts place and either get that sensor or the whole mirror 3) Most easiest way - open up the driver mirror ( video youtu.be/cQIPG7Mp7AQ Then you will see small nipple, after you take back cover off, that itself is AAT sensor - unfortunately, Crysler/Fiat doesn't sell it separately - only comes as whole package with mirror (they dont make money on selling cars, but parts . What I did, I've got one, which will pop up if your search for AAT sensor for Pro Master, cut all extra plastic off with a knife, to make like a stick) splice cut off old one and do the same with a new one, connect wiring and put new one in some open space there. Sounds a bit complicated, but it is not. This way, all you have to do is to open a mirror cut/rewire 2 wires on AAT sensors and assemble it back together. Will take 15-20 mins top. Just wanted to post my experience so that it might help someone in the future, the ambient temperature sensor is under the driver's side mirror. If you have aftermarket tow mirrors like mine it will be under the puddle light or fake puddle/access panel. Simply pry open and pop out the light/plate. You will see two wires that go up wards that are separate from the main wiring harness, mine was hot glued up inside. I popped out the wires from the glue and found a very cheap thermistor(ambient air sensor) that was simply a little ball on the end of the wires. I luckily was able to pull off the sensor and buy a mopar sensor(part #68138681AC) from my dealer, which I soldered on. My temp is showing fine now. If you have mopar mirrors you will see the sensor sticking out the front of the mirror underneath and you simply have to open the plate and disconnect the old sensor and plug in the new one. Hope this makes it easier for someone else with this problem.

Ambient Air temp sensor location

can anyone tell me where it's located and how to access it?  

It's behind the grill, if you look for it you'll see it., Not so easy to get behind the grill.  

High or low? Do you remember which side?  

Looking at the grille by the right headlight it's 4" from the passenger side of the beginning of the grille and 2" down from the top of the grille. You can't miss it.  

I changed one of these. The dealer wanted to remove the front bumper cover for access so I did it myself. It's just to the inside of the right headlight assy. You can see it through the grille. I did it this way, open hood, remove the flat plastic panels over the radiator, I used a small plastic angle fork shaped trim removal tool that just fit through one of the square holes in the grille, The sensor is only held on by a push pin. I pried out the push pin then reached down from up top and was able to grab the wiring harness close to the sensor and pull it up far enough to get a grip and remove the sensor from the connector. To reinstall I had to used double sided tape to hold the push pin to a flat head dowel to line it up to the hole and push in to lock the sensor in place.

I have a 2010 R/T Classic. She sat in the garage all winter then when I took her out this spring the ambient air sensor on my dash kept saying it was -40. I did some research, used the key fob to get error code 0073. I know what my issue is. My question is why doesn't my ECO work anymore? Is it because anytime the engine has an error code it automatically disables ECO? I still see ECO on the dash but it never turns on. I've tried just about everything and no matter what I do now that my air sensor went out I can't get ECO to work. Did this happen to you guys as well when your air sensor went out? Did ECO work again once the sensor was replaced? Just ordered a new sensor from RockAuto so I'll let ya know if ECO comes back on after I replace the bad sensor. So today I finally got a chance to take a look at the ambient air temperature sensor(new baby). I notice the wires got spliced somehow. So I repaired the wires and now when I turn the car on it reads the correct exterior air temperature(83 degrees today) but I'm still getting the 0073 error code when I do the key thing to show the error codes. My next step is to replace the original air temp sensor and see if that removes the error code or not. I have a brand new sensor from Rock Auto so that should be easy. As I mentioned before my biggest problem is that the ECO never turns on any more, it just says ECO but never says ECO ON now. I now have a generic engine light on and ECO never says ON. So I'm guessing I'm running on all 8 cylinders at all times. To same some gas I'm guessing I need to get rid of the 0073 error code and the engine light will go away and ECO will work again. I'll let ya know if replacing the temp sensor fixes that or not. From what I've heard from other forums it won't fix the error code. See: P0073 ambient temp sensor high - Dodge SRT Forum P.S. After fixing the air temp sensor wires today my car did seem to have a little more pep to her. But I'm not sure if that was just because it was a perfect day and I had just got done washing every inch or if it really had more pep to it. I'm hoping fixing the wiring from always saying -40 degrees to now saying the real temp of 83 degrees helps my air\fuel mixture and gives it some more power. But I'm not sure I'll ever really know the answer to that one or not. If anyone knows for sure I'd like to hear from you. Thanks

Changed mine this morning, but check engine light is still on and the temp gauge for outside temp is still not working. At a loss of what to do now. 2013 Dodge Challenger RT  

Have you checked for any rodent damage? That's what got mine. Chewed on a wire harness behind the bumper cover.  

With some FCA products once the issue is resolved it takes a number of starts before the fault clears. (usually ten).  

You were absolutely correct. Checked out the wiring harness above the sensor, and it had chewed up spots on it, not completely through but enough to short it out. Did you replace that part of the harness, and if you did where did you find the part?  

Must be a particularly tasty wire. I actually had the dealership replace the wire. A $400 visit on that one. The VC (Varmint Cong) also got a side marker wire. Glad you found the problem yourself. Mine was in an area I couldn't see or feel.  

Well, I replaced the wiring harness with a new one from Mopar ($42) rewired it, replaced the sensor, but check engine light is still on, and won't go off. I am out of answers.  

Run down to the auto parts store and use their tool to clear the code then see if it comes back.  

Well, I own one of the scan tools and when I clear the code, it comes right back. So already Tried that.  

Maybe there were some other wires that got damaged.
