Four Common Problems With the 3.6L Pentastar V6 Engines that We Can Repair

2014 dodge journey knocking

The 3.6 L FCA  Pentastar  V6 Engine is an overwhelmingly durable and reliable engine. That’s why it’s been used in in more than ten million Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles since 2010. With proper maintenance the 3.6L Pentastar engine can provide years of reliable service. However, no product is perfect, and the 3.6-liter Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s (FCA) Pentastar V6 engine is no exception. Unfortunately, problems with this type of engine can be challenging to diagnose, unless you take it to a shop that is highly experienced with these types of engines. At  Nerger’s Auto Express , we’ve repaired countless 3.6L FCA engines in vehicles ranging from Jeep Wranglers to Dodge Chargers, and our experience means that we can diagnose and repair common and complicated engine problems quickly.

Here’s a look at four common problems that we frequently repair with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine.

  • Pentastar V6 Engine Problem:  Misfire/Check Engine Light

If your car misfires, the check engine light will also come on, and the most common cause of a misfire or check engine light is a cylinder head failure. A cylinder head failure is caused by valve seats on cylinder #2 overheating. This is particularly common in Jeep Wranglers. However, depending upon your vehicle’s year and mileage, this problem is potentially covered under an extended warranty.

  • Pentastar 3.6L Engine Problem:  Ticking Sound in the Engine

If you hear a ticking sound in your Chrysler, Jeep, or Dodge, it’s often a symptom of a 3.6 Pentastar rocker arm failure, also known as a cam follower failure. Although the cost of the parts isn’t too steep, this problem requires a highly experienced auto technician to repair, so the labor costs can drive the price up.

  • 3.6L Pentastar Engine Problem: Overheating

If your engine is overheating, or if you’re having problems with coolant leaks, heating problems, or a/c problems it’s possible you have a cooling system failure. This is due to a water pump or radiator problem that is preventing the coolant from properly flowing through the engine the way it should. In some cases, this may also prompt a check engine light, or a default code, depending on your vehicle.

  • 3.6L FCA Pentastar V6 Engine Problem: Tapping, Knocking, Rattling

Tapping, knocking or rattling in your 3.6 Pentastar engine may be a symptom of an oil pump failure. However, before you panic, these noises may not indicate a complete failure, but instead are warning you of a drop in oil pressure. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but it is often due to sand deposits left behind in a cylinder head. Our expert technicians at Nerger’s Auto Express will be able to quickly diagnose and repair problems with your oil pump.

Engine knocking noise at idle?

2014 dodge journey knocking

  • Add to quote

It sounds like timing chain, and I don't hear it at speed.I almost thought it might be a rod bearing with slop but it disappears at engine above idle.I heard it at idle when I bought the van.But after replacing the cat it was still there. Can I ignore it? I am getting tired of fixing every thing that is not perfect! It has 82,000 on it now! You guys have saved me every time!! I gather it is timing slop and I gather a LOT of work to get at too! And at 58yrs old I don't have the drive or strength(bad back,Most stuff!)I can visit my doc and get a fist full of Percoset but I pay for it after I run out and when I was younger I got a case of beer and got pissed at it and once I started it was done nonstop!! But A 3 day hangover is not worth it and I gave up liquor 2 years ago and yes I am a friend of Bill W!So what do I have left to do to make this truck perfect? Its the last thing wrong with it! Myles

ok you Have I diagnosed the noise correctly? I noticed it is silent when cold and not warmed up.After I drove 10 miles it was there. How much work am I taking on?alt, shroud, fan, water pump then the timing cover ,Right?Do or should I replace the belt and the sprockets or just the belt.I might as well replace the 2 year old water pump also while I'm in there! What else is needed Alloro? Thanks Myles

It is so difficult to identify where some noises come from. Could be a belt driven accessory like PS pump. Get the engine hot, quickly removing the belt and see if the noise is still there Hard to imagine a timing chain going under 100k miles, but previous posts indicate you probably drive like like a lunatic

Hi Landyacht I used to drive like a scalded cat but I gave up liquor, turned human and drove my age.So remove the serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away? I will do that now.And while your helping me I checked my trans fluid hot and in neutral and are a pint low can I add the other pint of lubegard red? And Thanks Myles

I'm no expert, but I think it's odd you have a loose timing chain after only 82,000 miles. I just replaced the timing set on a 2000 B350 with 180,000 miles (only because I had a waterpump problem anyway), and from the looks of it, it could have gone another 100,000. I'd sure check everything else before I dug into it. There is an idler and tension adjuster pully that will make a "ticking" sound when the bearing are going out -- I'd check those first.

Go to Harbor Freight and get one of those automobile stethoscope thingies -- about 6 bucks, and use it to find the noise.

2014 dodge journey knocking

Extremely good advice. I had a belt tensioner go bad on a vehicle I used to have, sound baffled me and several of my friends until one guy just watched it for awhile and saw it move back and forth sometimes tapping on the timing cover and sometimes not. USe the stethoscope to listen at various points along the valve covers, the intak manifold, etc. Basically wherever you can without getting hung up in moving parts.

Hi Alloro I have already replaced the water pump and bypass hose about 3 years ago and it was a #!?+_@#^!!!!!!! .I had to disassemble so much to get access to the pump bolts and nuts. The bypass hose had a crimp clamp on it and I had to cut it with a dremel bit that took forever as it had little if any access to it! So you can see why I don't want to hang over the radiator for hours! It broke what's left of my back! I did let the engine cool off this afternoon and then started it and the ONLY noise was a PVC on top of the right dome cover vibrating like a electric engraving pen! The check ball buzzes so fast it is a hum almost. What causes a PVC valve to pulse back and forth so fast?Other than that the engine sounded fine! No knocking at all!Just a quiet smooth running engine ,But run it for 10 minutes and after it warms up I get the knock, knock, knock.and it is regular in time.Very evenly spaced knocks! That's why I assumed it might be the timing belt. When I increase the rpm it disappears.I wish I could record the knock and play it back for you.I went to U-tube and listened to bad timing belts and that's the knock I hear. But only HOT! I'm going to take the serpentine belt off tomorrow and see if Landyach is right again! I hope so! By the way Landyacht, can I add the other bottle of lubegard to the trany,I might as well use it! they say I should add 2 bottles for the amount of trans fluid I have.OK? Thanks Myles

Hi I never thought it had a belt tensioner on it.That sounds like what's wrong,In the morning I will get a stethoscope and give it a probing carefully avoiding moving parts! Thanks Guys Myles

Help Well I purchased the stethoscope and found out it is actually a great tool for diagnosing noises! I wonder how I lived without it!! It actually allows you to see inside the part you think is faulty!! I discovered it isn't the timing belt or anything else in the front of the engine making any kind of knocking noise! It must be projected from the rear of the dog house to the front of the truck like a speaker!!! I checked the PS pump,AC pump,Alt,timing cover and belt ,emissions pump and ,everything in the front of the engine and they only made their own particular running noise and NO knocking.I guess the noise is being projected from the rear on the engine to the front of the truck! So today I'm going to jack way up the front end and probe the top and rear of the engine and trans for the knocking noise! The stethoscope is a GREAT diagnosing tool! I never thought such a simple device could give me such an accurate knowledge of all the mechanical parts running! Each accessory makes its OWN special Noise! So I'm glad its not the timing belt or anything associated with it!I discovered from Landyacht its not a interference engine(When timing belt breaks valves don't drop on the pistons!)Its being projected from the rear of the engine or trans! Wish me luck probing the rear of the engine!! Myles

Hi Your right Alloro, well it is not the cause of my knock anyway! A real relief! Where is the IAT sensor located on the intake manifold? Thanks Buddy Myles

Myles, I typed that I was pretty sure that they are not interference engines but to check further. Pretty sure does not equal 100% sure so don't start attributing absolutes to my statements

Hi You have it.No More absolutes. Myles

Hi Where might the AIT sensor be located on my intake manifold?

see if 5W30 oil helps

hi I have 5-30 mobile 1 in it now. Thanks Myles

Hey Myle dont know if this will help but i had a car once that made the same undeturmanle noise thought it was this pully or that pully after changing them all out(not having a scope) i decided to take it to a shop turned out it was the rear main berring. again dont know if it helps but hope it does.

i have a 2001 dodge ram 5.2 and my is doing the same thing ? did you ever get your fixs? and what was it thanks andy

I once had a 1982 Dodge B150 Van with a very loud nock in the engine back in 2000. So I thought it was a bad crank bearing. So I just gave the 18 year old van away. So, after a few months, I asked the guy I gave the van to; how is the van doing? Well, he stated that the van is fine, I just replaced the transmission's Torque converter. And now it runs fine. As I understand it, he ran the van for another 5 years! I hope this helps.

Dodge Journey P0330: Knock Sensor ” Bank 2″ – Circuit Malfunction

P0330 is a powertrain OBDII trouble code that has the same meaning for the Dodge Journey as it would any other vehicle. By definition, it means that the vehicles ECM/PCM isn’t getting the proper signal from the knock sensor. Clearing this code typically requires a new knock sensor. The second most common cause is a short or break in the wiring harness.

Dodge Journey P0330 Diagnosis

Modern internal combustion engines utilize the knock sensor to allow for aggressive timing profiles. If the timing has gotten too aggressive it’ll cause the engine to knock. This sensor will let the computer know to dial back the timing.

P0330 Symptoms: Dodge Journey

P0330 Dodge Journey

The symptoms associated with P0330 are going to vary by engine and model year. Without a signal from the knock sensor, many engines will curve the timing and power output to make sure that the engine is not knocking. The only other symptom that you’ll probably notice is the service engine soon light itself.

P0330 Causes: Dodge Journey

Most of the time, the fix for P0330 in the Journey (or most any vehicle) is going to come from replacing the knock sensor or repairing the wiring harness. Here are the most common causes of P0330.

Wiring Harness

P0330 is telling you that the ECM/PCM is not getting the proper signal from the knock sensor. When this happens the computer will operate as though it is getting no signal from the sensor at all. A good place to start would be to check the wiring leading from the sensor and see if any of it has been damaged or frayed. Most of them bolt right into the block, which makes accessing them difficult. Their proximity to the engine block means that they are often susceptible to damage.

Checking Car Wiring Circuits For Continuity with a Multimeter (Youtube) How To Find a Electrical Short On Most Any Vehicle (Backyard Mechanic)

Knock Sensor

If you find that the wiring harness is ok, and the code is still persistently registering, it is time to test and/or replace the knock sensor. There are guides out there on how to test a knock sensor, but they are very affordable. They can also take a little digging to get to, which makes replacing it the way to go.

How to Test a Knock Sensor (It Still Runs) Knock Sensor Dodge Journey (AMAZON)

The most difficult part in fixing your Journey’s engine to clear the P0330 code is going to be finding room to maneuver and inspect the Knock Sensor and wiring harness. This can be tedious work. If there is anything that you would like to add, please feel free to do so below. Good luck!

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

2014 dodge journey knocking

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

2014 dodge journey knocking

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

2014 dodge journey knocking

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

2014 dodge journey knocking

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

2014 dodge journey knocking

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

2014 dodge journey knocking

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

2014 dodge journey knocking

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

luckydaddy85,

I recommend bringing your vehicle to an FCA dealership for a formal diagnosis. Please feel free to reach out if you would like assistance in scheduling an appointment. Either way, be sure to keep us posted!

Just wondering if you ever resolved this problem? My 2015 makes a noise sometimes when going over bumps, especially the curb in front of my driveway. I have no idea if this is normal or not?

There is a TSB on this. As I stated above, dealer replaced the struts and isolators. No more noise.

Cost of new front struts and isolators, plus labor. Figure at least $600-700. Will vary depending on location.

Is there a link to the current TSBs? I'm aware only of the TSB for the cold-start idler pulley noise on 3.6L's. My suspension squeaks a lot when the car has been sitting for a few hours or more, and *might* clunk. I say might, because I live in Michigan... where lawmakers are unconcerned with our roads falling apart and bridges opening up weekly.

I'm curious what other TSBs there might be. Google search isn't turning up the idler pulley or anything with the suspension...

Generally car manufacturers only post tsbs to their dealers, so unless you know an employee they only become

general knowledge when applied thru the course of customer

Of course recalls are safety related and can be sourced via

dealer/vin #.

It's in a thread on here somewhere. You gotta search yourself.

All that turns up (difficult to search with 4-character minimums) is something for 2012 calendar year builds. Mine was built February 10th, 2014. I'll have to have them diagnose it and reference the TSB anyway, as well as have them do the idler pulley TSB. Was hoping to do that while it was for the ABS moisture recall.

I believe TSB 02-001-13 is what jkeaton is referring to. I have it pasted below. Unfortunately, it does not apply to 2015 model year DJ's. Either way, with your vehicle still being under warranty, I'd recommend a trip to the dealership to have your concerns diagnosed.

I started a thread a while back about the issue we're having with my wifes 2014 R/T. Sounds like the same issue you're having. We've been in and out of dealers 4X with little success. With the help of DodgeCares (who's been awesome), we've had the LH strut, isolator, LH control arm and sway bar bushings replaced. It didn't fix the problem. The only thing that slightly worked was having the isolators greased like crazy, even then it only worked for about a week.

It has gotten better but it still sounds like there's a bucket of marbles when we pull into the driveway and when the car hits certain bumps - the problem is it's not something I can force to happen. It's disheartening because she's got 33k miles on her car (started around 12k) so we're almost out of warranty. We've also heard it on 3 of the rentals we've had, so I don't think it's an isolated issue.

Here's my thread if you want to see it... http://www.dodgejourneyforum.com/topic/6440-front-end-clunk-while-braking-over-bumps/

  • DodgeCares and Woah322

Replacing the struts and isolators fixed mine.

I printed out the TSB, gave it the dealership, still saying can't duplicate my concerns or that we don't hear anything, even though I've brought it in twice for the same issue .

Have you had a service adviser ride with you to demonstrate the issue? Honestly, you need to do that, otherwise they will never be able to "duplicate the problem". Took me two trips for them to get it right and finally replace the parts. Be persistent, or find another dealer.

I think jkeaton is right on the money with this. First, I would do as jkeaton says and take a ride with a service advisor in order to specifically demonstrate your concern to them. If you still have issues after this, I would try another dealership. Unfortunately, if a dealership really can't duplicate what you're experiencing they won't be able to diagnose or repair your vehicle.

I'll probably bring it to the dealer local to me instead of the one I bought it from.

I'm having the same issue, the clunk, squeak noise over small bumps, turning, etc. Dealer has replaced the struts and isolators as a start. Didn't help. They had our journey for four days, and can't pinpoint anything. The rental we have is a 16 journey, same issue, and only 7000 miles on it. Dealer took a used journey and a new 15 off lot, and both are doing the same thing. Has anyone found a solution to this? Dealer says everything is really tight underneath, but obviously SOMETHING isn't right....

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
