The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20500

Remarks by President   Biden Honoring the 2021 World Series Champions, the Atlanta   Braves

12:07 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT:  What a big deal being here for the World Champions. Please, have a seat.  Thank you.  Thank you, thank you, thank you. Well, welcome to the White House — (applause) — the 2021 World Champion Atlanta Braves!  (Applause.)  Got some guys over there too. I was telling the guys in — back in the other side of the building that I married a Philly girl.  (Laughter.)  And she’s smarter than I am, and she’s hell of a lot better looking.  And like every Philly fan, she’s convinced she knows more about everything in sports than anybody else (inaudible).  (Laughter.)  And these guys beat the Phillies last night 8-7.  (Laughter.)  I love them. But, Boss, I thought I was going to be quarantined today.  (Laughter.) Anyway, I have to be careful how nice I am to these guys today, and especially since last night.  (Laughter.) We’re joined by so many friends from Atlanta, starting with the former Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms.  Stand up, Keisha.  (Applause.)  Keisha now works full-time in the Executive Office Building with me, and she’s the best.  She’s the best.  And she — she took over from Cedric Richmond, who was, as he says, a Morehouse Man, played baseball at Morehouse.  He’s now at the Democratic State — National Committee. We’ve also got Mayor Andre Dickens.  MAYOR DICKENS:  Right here. THE PRESIDENT:  There you go, Mayor.  (Applause.)  But I want you to know — Lisa Cupid, the Cobb County Commissioner, she’s got the stadium.  (Applause.)  And from the Georgia Congressional delegation, Representatives Bourdeaux, Williams, and Carter are all here.  Stand up, guys.  (Applause.)  Atlanta is a great sports city — American sports city.  And the Braves are a big reason for that. This team has literally been part of the American history for over 150 years.  The only franchise to field players in every single season since pro baseball began in 1870 [the 1870s].  It’s pretty amazing.  (Applause.)  My grandfather was an All-American football player at Santa Clara, and he was a newspaper guy up in Scranton, Pennsylvania.  His name was Ambrose Finnegan.  And when it was the Boston Braves, he didn’t like it.  (Laughter.)  But at any rate, that’s another story.  (Laughter.) They’ve all — this team is defined by the courage of Hank Aaron, the Home Run King and 25-time All-Star — (applause) — 25 times.  And Hank Aaron shattered a lot of records, but he shattered them in racism as well, with dignity and with class.  And, you know, it’s been celebrated for success in the ‘90s — five times World Series — five times World Series in a decade; 14 straight division titles.  And now, the Braves will be forever remembered for the unstoppable, joyful run that this team made last year — and, I would say, “improbable” run at the time.  It was a rough start, plagued by injuries.  The All-Star break, not one day of a winning record.  Given a 0.4 percent chance of winning on CNN.  No, I’m only joking.  (Laughter.)  I listen to all the percentages on CNN, you know?  (Laughter.)  My batting average isn’t nearly as good.  At any rate — but the franchise never quit.  It never gave in.  You rebuilt the whole outfield practically overnight.  Play by play, inning by inning, you grinded and you ground it out, and you did it together. You made the playoffs and beat the Brav- — the Brewers and the Dodgers.  And then you beat the Astros to win it all.  Forever known as the “Upset Kings of October.”  (Applause.)   One of the greatest — one of history’s greatest turnarounds. First title in 26 years. But none of it came easy.  People counted you out.  Heck, I — I know something about being counted out.  (Laughter.)  And I know in Georgia, you show up when it counts.  (Applause.)  When it counts.  You never give up.  You never give in.  As my mother would say, “You keep the faith.” This team proved that Hank Aaron — what Hank Aaron once said.  He said, “There is no shortcut in life.  You have to take it one step at a time and work hard.  And you have to give it — give back.” Well, you know, this team has done it all.  And that’s what this team does on the field and off the field through the community service: it gives back, channeling its reach — its reach and resources to feed the hungry, support our veterans, give kids a safe place to play, and so much more. Bringing people together, inspiring us to do better by the power of your example — that’s sports.  That’s America.  And that’s why I’m honored to host the 2021 Braves who are here at the White House.  Fellas, congratulations. And, Mr. Chairman, the floor is yours.  (Applause.)  MR. MCGUIRK:  The first thing I would say on behalf of all of my brethren behind me is: Wow.  What a thrill to be here at the White House.

I want to start off paying a little bit of a compliment to our team, as President Biden has just done.  They played an extra-innings game last night.  We got in hours late from when — they’ve been doing a lot of traveling.  You cannot believe, at this point in the season, how tired they are.  They won 8-7 in the 11th inning last night.  (Applause.)

These guys — but — but what —

THE PRESIDENT:  I slept in the guest room.  (Laughter.)

MR. MCGUIRK:  As the President says, this group never quits.  It is unbelievable.  It is the metaphor of how we got here today.

We’re — this group shows up, does their job every day.  It’s an amazing group of men.  And — (applauds) — yeah.  (Applause.)

Back to President Biden.  Thank you so much for your kind remarks.  On behalf of the entire Braves organization and all of our players, we want to thank you officially for hosting us and celebrating the 2021 World Series championship here at the White House.  We’re pinching ourselves.

And, Mr. President, I’d like to thank one of our Atlanta friends, Keisha Bottoms — former mayor of Atlanta who is on your staff.  Her helpfulness in getting this done made it happen.  Thank you, Keisha.  (Applause.)

And as the President so aptly talked about, last year’s championship was so special, because on August 1st, we were playing below .500 ball, and we were no one’s pick for the postseason.

But thanks to some savvy moves by Alex at the trade deadline, which we know well, and the great leadership on the field by Snit, we came back and we won our fourth straight division title, beating three incredible teams that the President has just outlined — the Brewers, the Dodgers, and the Astros — on our way to winning the 2021 World Series championship.

You know, a little aside: We still think we had a special angel looking over us, having our recently passed friend, Hank Aaron, pulling the strings from on high.  There’s no question Hank was a part of what we did.  And he’d have been there every step of the way with us if he was here.  (Applause.)

In a few days, Mayor Dickens — a few days after we landed back in Atlanta, we welcomed 2 million fans along the parade route, which showed how the team brought everyone back together after the very trying years of the COVID years.

And so, finally, Mr. President, we have a very young and very talented roster, and we hope this isn’t a one-and-done visit to your home.  (Laughter.)  In short, we plan to be back.  (Applause.)  And now I’d like to invite our President of Baseball Operations, Alex Anthopoulos, and our manager, Brian Snitker, to present a special gift to the President from our team.  (Applause.)

(The President is presented with an Atlanta Braves jersey.) (Applause.) 12:18 P.M. EDT

The Atlanta Braves joined President Joe Biden Monday morning to celebrate their big win at the 2021 World Series.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 2021 World Series champion Atlanta Braves headed to the White House to celebrate their victory.

Monday morning at around 11:45, the Braves met with President Joe Biden in the East Room of the White House.

This visit came just days before the 2022 regular season wraps up and playoffs begin. The Braves beat the Houston Astros in six games last year. The Braves are in second place in the National League East standings with 95 wins just 1 ½ games below the New York Mets. Post-season begins Oct. 7.

Braves visit White House to celebrate 2021 World Series win

The Atlanta Braves were in Washington D.C. this week and met with President Joe Biden to celebrate their 2021 World Series win.

Those visits were highly charged in the previous administration. Many athletes took issue with President Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric on policing, immigration and more. Trump, for his part, didn’t take kindly to the criticism from athletes or their on-field expressions of political opinion.

Under Biden, the tradition appears to be back. He has previously hosted the NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks and Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the White House.

PHOTOS & VIDEO: Biden hosts World Series champs Atlanta Braves at White House

Atlanta Braves -- Monday, Sept. 26, 2022

President Joe Biden hosted the Atlanta Braves at the White House on Monday to celebrate the team’s 2021 World Series victory .

The president welcomed the Major League Baseball team to the East Room this afternoon, ahead of the Braves opening a three-game series at 7:05 p.m. against the Washington Nationals.

“It’ll be a great experience. We’re world champions, and we get to go to the White House,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said last week when news of the planned visit was announced. “That’s kind of something special to get to tour and experience that. I think it’ll be something I’ll remember the rest of my life.”

Watch the video replay below:

Biden has hosted several championship teams at the White House since taking office last year, with cheerful apolitical celebrations that have departed from the style of his predecessor, who turned the ceremonies into cultural flashpoints.

Donald Trump barred Steph Curry from attending a White House ceremony to celebrate the Golden State Warriors’ NBA championship in 2017 after he expressed concern with the then-president’s policies and rhetoric.

And Trump disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles from a celebration at the White House for the team’s Super Bowl victory after most players and coaches said they would boycott the visit after he demanded that NFL players stand during the national anthem.

The Braves, of course, are no stranger to political attention. The team’s plan to leave the city of Atlanta and build a complex in Cobb County sparked soul-searching in City Hall and a development boom surrounding the Braves’ new suburban home.

After Georgia’s Republican-led Legislature rewrote the state’s election laws in 2021, Biden and other politicians pushed Major League Baseball to boycott the All-Star game if it was still held at Truist Park .

When the league moved the game to Denver, Trump quickly called on his supporters to “ boycott baseball ” and other Republican officials lashed out at the league.

Still, the former president attended Game 4 of the World Series, holding court in a suite with Senate hopeful Herschel Walker.

Even now, the rift over the All-Star game still occasionally surfaces on the campaign trail, with Gov. Brian Kemp often saying the Braves’ triumph over the Houston Astros in the World Series was “poetic justice” after the city lost the showcase event.

President Biden salutes Braves’ ‘unstoppable, joyful’ run to 2021 World Series

atlanta braves white house visit

Saying he knows “something about being counted out,” President Biden welcomed the Atlanta Braves to the White House on Monday to celebrate their “unstoppable, joyful” run to the 2021 World Series championship .

The Braves started slow and didn’t have an above-.500 record until early August, but they caught fire late in the season to win their fourth straight National League East title and then defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros in the playoffs for their first World Series title since 1995.

“It was a rough start, played through injuries. At the all-star break, not one day with a winning record. Given a 0.4 percent chance of winning on CNN. My batting average isn’t nearly as good,” Biden said, drawing a laugh. “But the franchise never quit, never gave in. You rebuilt the whole outfield practically overnight. Play by play, inning by inning, you ground it out, and you did it together.”

Feinstein: Aaron Judge is chasing real history, not Barry Bonds’s phony version

Biden said the Braves were playing with the spirit of Hank Aaron, the Hall of Famer and Braves icon who died in January 2021.

“This team is defined by the courage of Hank Aaron, the home run king and 25-time all-star. Hank Aaron shattered a lot of records, but he shattered racism as well, with dignity and with class,” Biden said.

Added Braves Chairman Terry McGuirk: “We still think we have a special angel looking over us, having our recently passed friend Hank Aaron pulling the strings from on high. There’s no question Hank was a part of what we did, and he’d have been there every step of the way if he was here.”

Braves President Alex Anthopoulos and Manager Brian Snitker then presented Biden with a No. 46 jersey, a nod to Biden’s status as the 46th president.

Cardinals’ Albert Pujols slugs his way into MLB’s 700 home run club

Monday’s reception was a decidedly nonpolitical affair, and there was no mention of Biden’s support of MLB’s decision to strip the Braves of last year’s All-Star Game.

In April 2021 , Biden said he “strongly” supported players who were demanding that MLB move that year’s All-Star Game from Truist Park, the Braves’ home stadium in suburban Cobb County, after the Georgia state government enacted changes on voting regulations. Two days after Biden’s comments, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced he was moving the game away from Georgia, saying, “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box.” The game was eventually played in Denver .

The move was condemned by Republicans and some Democrats, with Stacey Abrams — a once and future Democratic gubernatorial candidate from Georgia — saying she was “disappointed” because “I don’t want to see Georgia families hurt by lost events and jobs.” (She did, however, commend the players, owners and Manfred for speaking out about the issue.)

Any opposition to the team’s nickname and its fans’ “tomahawk chop” ritual was also unmentioned during the ceremony, but White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre fielded a question about it during Monday’s daily media briefing.

“We believe that it’s important to have this conversation, and Native American and Indigenous voices, they should be at the center of this conversation,” Jean-Pierre said. “That is something that the president believes and something that this administration believes, and he has consistently emphasized that all people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”

This year’s Braves team has the third-best record in the National League at 95-58 and has clinched a playoff spot. Atlanta, which opens a three-game series against the Nationals in Washington on Monday night, is 1½ games behind the New York Mets in the NL East race with nine games remaining.

“We have a very young and talented roster, and we hope this isn’t a one-and-done visit to your home,” McGuirk told Biden. “In short, we plan to be back.”

Biden honors World Series champion Atlanta Braves at White House

atlanta braves white house visit

The Atlanta Braves were at the White House Monday as President Joe Biden honored the club for their 2021 World Series victory.

The visit came as this year’s regular season winds down.

With Braves players, coaches and their manager looking on, Biden recounted the team’s improbable run last year: sneaking into the playoffs before beating the Brewers and Dodgers to advance to the World Series.

“And then you beat the Astros to win it all, forever known as the ‘Upset Kings of October’,” said Biden. The Braves presented Biden with a team jersey with his name and the uniform number 46 on the back.

Atlanta has already clinched a playoff spot this year, but still has aspirations of a division title and more, said Braves’ chairman Terry McGuirk.

“We have a very young and talented roster; we hope this isn’t a one-and-done visit to your home,” McGuirk said, turning toward President Biden. “In short, we plan to be back.” In 2021, the Braves captured their first World Series title in 26 years. Bill Clinton was in the White House the last time the Braves celebrated a title.

Former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms – now a member of the Biden administration – and current mayor Andre Dickens both attended the ceremony. Several members of Georgia’s congressional delegation, both Republican and Democrat, were also there.

Atlanta Braves visit White House to celebrate 2021 World Series victory

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Monday, the Atlanta Braves visited the White House to celebrate its 2021 World Series victory.

The team is in Washington, D.C., for a three-game series against the Washington Nationals. The Braves are heading down the final stretch of the regular season with a playoff spot already locked up, but are still trying to chase down the New York Mets for the division lead.

Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies told Gray Television’s Washington News Bureau, “It feels amazing to be here. I always see movies and from the outside, being here is great right now.”

Braves President of Baseball Operations & General Manager Alex Anthopoulos said his message to Braves fans was, “We want to make you proud. We want to make fans of Georgia and Atlanta proud.”

President Joe Biden highlighted how the Braves rode a red-hot August 2021 -- going from a team that looked like it would miss the playoffs to the eventual World Series champions.

President Biden called the team’s run, “One of the history’s greatest turnarounds. First title in 26 years.”

Braves Manager Brian Snitker called the White House visit “special.” While not naming players, such as former Braves and current Dodgers star Freddie Freeman, Snitker acknowledged there was something missing.

Snitker said, “I just wish somehow we could have done it where we could have got all the guys here, you know, the guys that are not with us, on other teams and all, where they could have experienced it. But yeah, this is very very special.”

The Braves presented President Joe Biden with a World Series jersey, “Biden 46,″ at the end of Monday’s ceremony.

Morehouse faculty approves honorary degree on President Biden ahead of visit

President will deliver 140th morehouse commencement address sunday.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Ahead of President Joe Biden’s Sunday Morehouse commencement address, the White House held a two-hour meeting with students and faculty at the nationally acclaimed HBCU.

Steven Benjamin, senior advisor to the president, met with the school Friday morning. In the early afternoon, Benjamin said Morehouse faculty voted to confer an honorary degree on the president.

Last month, Morehouse announced it had invited Biden to become the second sitting American president to deliver Morehouse College’s commencement address, following in the footsteps of his former boss, Barack Obama. Biden is scheduled to deliver the school’s graduation speech on Sunday, May 19, at 9 a.m.

In 2013, then-President Obama — under whom Biden served as vice president — delivered Morehouse’s commencement address for that class.

But almost immediately after the announcement, students, faculty and alumni began expressing concern over Biden’s visit to the campus. It was over Biden’s unwillingness to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. An online petition was also started seeking to persuade Morehouse College to rescind its invitation to Biden.

During a White House press briefing on Thursday Benjamin said that Biden will be able to hear directly from those at Morehouse College on Sunday.

“I’m sure the president will have a chance to engage with faculty, staff and students while he’s there,” said Benjamin

Biden’s Morehouse address is his second time delivering a commencement address to an HBCU. Last year, Biden spoke at Howard University, the alma mater of Vice President Kamala Harris.

When it comes time for Sunday’s commencement ceremonies, Morehouse College President David A. Thomas detailed what will and will not be allowed.

“We will allow silent non disruptive protest,” said Thomas.

He added, “we will also not ask police to take individuals out of commencement in zip ties, if faced with the choice I will cease the ceremonies on the spot.”

This weekend marks the president’s first visit back to the Peach State after a March campaign rally.

Braves Rally Late to End Losing Streak, Take Down Boston Red Sox in Series Opener

Lindsay crosby | may 7, 2024.

Atlanta Braves left fielder Jarred Kelenic hit the first home run of his Atlanta Braves career tonight to put Atlanta ahead of the Boston Red Sox early.

  • Atlanta Braves
  • Boston Red Sox

The Atlanta Braves scored late to break a tie and ultimately take down the Boston Red Sox, 4-2, on Tuesday night in Truist Park.

Here’s what you need to know about from the contest.

Reynaldo López continued his strong start

López entered with the best ERA of any Braves starter and it won’t be going up by much.

The 30-year-old righty gave Atlanta 5.1 innings tonight, allowing only two runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out five.

The first of the two runs came via those four walks - in the sixth, López’s third walk of the inning got Boston on the board and prompted manager Brian Snitker to pull him. Reliever Aaron Bummer’s attempt at an inning-ending double play ball was hit off of his own shin, bringing in the second run of the inning, but he got two strikeouts of Jarren Duran and Rafael Devers to keep the game tied at two.

López varied his velocity a lot more than usual tonight, reaching back and getting his old reliever fastball of 98.0 for a strikeout of Tyler O’Neil in the 5th and dropping it down as low as 91.6 to get Vaughn Grissom out ahead in the 4th. His game average of 95.3 was within one-tenth of a mph of his season average, however, and this appeared to be just more of the evolution of López as a starter. He finished the outing with only eight whiffs and a slightly below-average 29% CSW, although he also threw only five curveballs among his 91 pitches (54 strikes).

Jarred Kelenic takes off

The Braves traded for outfielder Jarred Kelenic from the Seattle Mariners because they loved his defense and thought they could unlock more offensive consistency from the talented but streaky former top prospect.

Kelenic’s power numbers to start the season have been down, though, with no homers through his first 26 regular season games in a Braves uniform.

That ended tonight.

Kelenic took Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford deep tonight, only Crawford’s second homer allowed of the season, in the bottom of the 3rd inning to put Atlanta on the board.

Life, death, taxes, and Marcell Ozuna

The Big Bear is inevitable.

With a tied ballgame in the 8th inning and Braves on both first and second, designated hitter Marcell Ozuna extended his MLB-leading RBI total to 34 with a well-placed ground ball up the middle that evaded the Red Sox defenders for long enough to score Ozzie Albies from second.

Atlanta followed that up with an RBI groundout that should have ended the inning - hitting it to first baseman Garrett Cooper, he threw to second base to start the double play but second baseman Vaughn Grissom and shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela - playing only their third game together after Grissom was activated off of the injured list last weekend - got crossed up and Rafaela couldn’t even attempt the throw back to first.

Defense matters, folks.

Raisel Iglesias put up a clean sheet

Atlanta’s closer settled some lingering nerves that Braves fans had with a clean inning tonight, sitting down the Red Sox in order for his 9th save of the season. It’s the first time Iglesias has had a 1-2-3 inning since April 22nd and it’s his 199th career save.

What’s next for the Atlanta Braves?

Atlanta wraps up the short series with Boston tomorrow night; the Red Sox have yet to announce a starter but it’s expected that Nick Pivetta will be activated off of the injured list (flexor strain) to make the start. Atlanta’s countering with former Red Sox starter Chris Sale, facing his former team for the first time since an offseason trade brought him to Atlanta. First pitch from Truist Park is scheduled for 7:20 PM ET.

The Minnesota Timberwolves advanced to the Western Conference Finals on Sunday night with a stunning comeback win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 7. After falling down by 20 and trailing by 15 at the half, Minnesota stormed back to win by a final score of 98-90. The Timberwolves got 23 points each from Karl-Anthony Towns and Jaden McDaniels in the victory, and will face the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals.

After the win, Anthony Edwards was visiting with the crew on Inside the NBA. When Charles Barkley informed Edwards that he has not been to Minnesota in around 20 years, Edwards provided the line of the night.

And now a new slogan for the Minnesota Tourism industry.

First, the quip from Edwards, who instantly replied to Barkley with a three-word line for the ages.

“Bring ya ass!”

Chuck: "I have not been to Minnesota in probably 20 years." Ant: "Bring ya ass!" pic.twitter.com/GRJ7iLvinC — NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) May 20, 2024

It did not take long for the Minnesota Tourism Council to pounce. Monday morning the URL BringYaAss.com redirected to the Explore Minnesota website, where visitors can learn all about visiting — or even moving to — Minnesota. You can learn about “Festivals and Events,” “Outdoor Adventures,” “Food and Drink,” and “Family Fun.”

You can even order your own Minnesota Travel Guide.

Bring ya ass, indeed.
