of 6 Comedy Movies Like Bad Trip You Must See

‘Bad Trip’ is a hidden camera comedy film directed by Kitao Sakurai and starring Eric Andre, Lil Rel Howery, Tiffany Haddish, and Michaela Conlin in the lead roles. It follows two close friends, Chris and Bud taking a road trip in a stolen car from Florida to New York City so that Chris and confess his feelings to his high school crush, Maria. The two friends end up having a (mis)adventure of a lifetime. If you enjoyed the movie’s unique sense of humor presented in the reverent hidden camera format, we have compiled a list of similar films that you should also find entertaining. You can watch most of these films like ‘Bad Trip’ on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu.

6. Due Date

bad trip movies like

‘ Due Date ’ is a dark comedy film directed by Todd Phillips that follows Peter Highman, a successful architect who is forced to hitch a ride with the aspiring actor, Ethan Tremblay, to travel from Atlanta to Los Angeles to be with his wife, Sarah, for the birth of their child. The film is similar to ‘Bad Trip’ because both movies feature a road trip filled with hilarious mishaps. Zach Galifianakis’ comic timing and Robert Downey Jr.’s charismatic screen presence make for an ice and fire combination that is just too enjoyable to miss out on.

5. Project X

bad trip movies like

‘ Project X ’ is a comedy thriller film directed by Nima Nourizadeh and revolves around three teenagers, Thomas, Costa, and J.B who plan to throw a grand party that will quickly make them popular among their peers. However, their plan goes horribly wrong. The film’s found-footage format can be considered the sister of the hidden camera format of ‘Bad Trip.’ Moreover, both films don’t mind blurring the line between humor and profanity every now and then to keep the audiences laughing.

4. Dude, Where’s My Car?

bad trip movies like

‘Dude, Where’s My Car?’ is a stoner comedy film about two best friends Jesse and Chester, who misplace Jesse’s car after getting stoned. The close friendship between the two central characters is a common trait between this movie and ‘Bad Trip.’ A missing car is integral to the plot of both films, and it is hilarious to watch Jesse and Chester stumble across the town trying to retrace their misadventures from the night before. It has achieved cult status over the years, which makes it a must-watch for comedy fans.

3. Impractical Jokers: The Movie

bad trip movies like

If you enjoyed the rib-tickling banter of the two best friends from ‘Bad Trip’ you can double up on that fun with a quartet of close friends featured in ‘ Impractical Jokers: The Movie ,’ a hidden camera comedy film. The titular jokers, Sal, Joe, Murr, and Q, who are arguably the most popular faces associated with the genre on TV, make their big-screen debut with this film. The film is packed with the classic impractical shenanigans of the jokers but in a cinematic form. A portion of the film is also a road trip and the hidden camera format will certainly remind you of ‘Bad Trip.’

2. Bad Grandpa

bad trip movies like

‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,’ commonly known as ‘Bad Grandpa,’ is a hidden camera comedy film directed by Jeff Tremaine that follows a grandfather and his grandson on one epic road trip filled with hysterical misadventures. It forms a loosely linear narrative through its many pranks and stunts that are a staple of the Jackass franchise. Its road trip element and hidden camera format are reminiscent of ‘Bad Trip.’ Besides, is there a better pair of best friends than a grandfather and grandson? We don’t think so.

bad trip movies like

‘ Borat ’ is perhaps the most renowned film in the hidden camera sub-genre of comedy, and it lives up to every bit of hype you must have heard about it. The film is directed by Larry Charles and follows the titular character created by Sacha Baron Cohen interviewing real people across America for his documentary. Let us put it this way if ‘Bad Trip’ is the tip of the iceberg, then ‘Borat’ is the iceberg of the hidden camera comedy genre. The film’s satirical humor is also an upgrade over the borderline absurdist humor of ‘Bad Trip.’ The bottom line is, if you enjoyed ‘Bad Trip,’ you should definitely watch ‘Borat’ to experience the hidden camera comedy genre at its finest.

10 Raucous Movies Like Bad Trip

  • January 25, 2024

author-avatar

We’ve all had those trips where you take the wrong exit and end up in The House of Horrors instead of Pleasantville. Not all such detours are awful, though. As these movies like Bad Trip (2021) demonstrate, sometimes, you just gotta lean into the madness of it all. Just make sure to pack a fresh bowl before you head out.

The Hangover (2009)

We all know this film tops most lists of bad-trip comedies. The Hangover is one of the best movies to watch when you need a good laugh. One could even say it walked so movies like Bad Trip could run.

Directed by Todd Phillips, this raunchy comedy follows three friends (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis) as they try to piece together the events of the wild bachelor party they attended in Las Vegas. Along the way, they’re met with a variety of hilarious misadventures, including substance induced antics, cryptic messages, and a baby.

Aside from its obvious comedic moments, The Hangover also has a level of nostalgia to it. This film comes from an era of comedy where the very premise proved hysterical enough, that the rest of the film could rest entirely on performance and ad-libs. Times, of course, change. And The Hangover would be unlikely to make as much of a splash today as it once did. Despite that, and despite criticisms it has incurred over the years , it remains one of the most successful comedies of all time.

And it’s only gets better if you watch it stoned.

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

“A typical road trip weekend consists of partying, hooking up, and going wild, But in 2010, four friends will discover a new level of awesome.” This intro could be about The Hangover . It could also be about any raucous comedy from the 2010s.

But here, it just so happens to be the perfect description for Hot Tub Time Machine , a film about four friends whose bad trip leads them to 1986. A time of cassette players, knee-length socks, and Michael Jackson.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie (2019)

Fans of The Hangover will undoubtedly acknowledge that Zach Galifianakis is one of the best parts of the film. The actor’s understated delivery and flawless comedic timing make him an indispensable part of any project he happens to be involved in. So you can imagine the absolute side-splitting hilarity of a movie when he stands at the helm.

Between Two Ferns originally aired as a web series centered on Galifianakis hosting interviews with a wide variety of celebrities. The talk show proved to be a massive hit, and a spin-off movie followed.

The overall premise stays the same: Galifianakis awkwardly interviews celebrities who desperately try to keep it together with each passing question. The one difference is the movie follows the actor on the road as he goes through a series of interviews in an attempt to “restore his reputation.”

The Do-Over (2016)

Recent years have made many of us question our place in the world. We’ve tried to make big changes and fix our lives. And many of us have, at least once, considered going for a total do-over and starting from scratch. This is exactly what two down-on-their-luck guys (Adam Sandler and David Spade) decide to do in The Do-Over. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite go as planned.

The Trip (2010)

The Trip (2010), not to be confused with either The Trip (2021) or The Trip (2021), is a cult classic. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, it follows two friends (Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon) on a quest to find the best fish and chips in England. Along the way, they get involved in a variety of misadventures, including psychedelic trips and run-ins with the law.

While the movie may be tame compared to some of the other entries on this list, what makes it so funny is the ad-libbed, improvisational comedy between Coogan and Brydon. The pair have great chemistry, and it’s clear that they’re having an absolute blast throughout the movie.

The humorous banter combined with the scenic British countryside makes for a hilarious and charming watch. If you’ve ever wanted to take a road trip through England, this is the movie for you.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)

Rock mockumentaries are the epitome of musical satire. The genre takes the allure of rock stars and turns it on its head. The result is a stream of absolute comedic gems, with Popstar being a newer addition to the catalog.

When a musician (Andy Samberg) from a rap boyband (Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) parts ways with the group to launch his solo career, he believes the only way to go is up. Unfortunately, he doesn’t quite hit his mark and instead, goes crashing straight down.

And thus, the pop star has to never stop never stopping in order to keep his career afloat.

21 & Over (2013)

As far as crass, raunchy, and obscene movies like Bad Trip go, this film certainly checks all the boxes. 21 & Over follows Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) who decides to spend the night before a medical school interview drinking with his friends (Miles Teller and Skyler Astin). What could possibly go wrong?

Considering the trailer opens with “Did we just kill Jeff Chang?”, plenty of things, apparently.

Keanu (2016)

A movie about fake dealers, real gang leaders, a series of unfortunate events, and a stolen cat played by the titular Keanu himself? Whether this film was drafted by stoners or not, it is clearly made for them.

And it stars Key and Peele alongside Tiffany Haddish, Method Man, Nia Long, and many more actors who have the comedic chops to make this inverted John Wick story work.

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

Speaking of Keanu, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention his most iconic role to date in one of the most iconic films to date. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is the result of what we’d get if Beavis and ButtHead (1993) were the leads in Back to the Future (1985).

The movie follows two dudes (Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter) who are on the verge of failing history. When a man from the future shows up, they naturally use his time-traveling prowess to help them finish their assignment.

Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)

Dude, Where’s My Car? is one of the best bad trip movies to watch when you need a good laugh. Even at over two decades old, this film still holds up as a quality stoner buddy comedy that goes from a simple opening to absolute batshit insanity in just under an hour and a half.

Directed by Danny Leiner, this zany comedy follows two bumbling slackers (Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott) as they try to locate their missing vehicle while fending off aliens and evil doctors.

Filled with absurd slapstick humor and outrageous characters who take utter pleasure in hamming it up on the big screen, this movie is the perfect way to kick back and have a good time.

So Bad, It’s Good

What makes a raucous comedy? Raunchy set-ups, slapstick comedy, characters that somehow make every bad choice a person could possibly make in the span of a few minutes. But there’s another element to them: the notion that you can make a film using the core elements of comedy without needing to take yourself too seriously and still give your audience the time of their life.

Movies like Bad Trip do just that: they aren’t biting satire nor are they profoundly life-changing. They’re just a really good time and a much better alternative to going on a bad trip.

Now streaming on:

A smoothie shop employee with butterflies in his stomach and a bleeding right hand sits next to an older gentleman on a bench. “Can I ask you something?” he prefaces. The worker then proceeds to babble about his crush, Maria. Should he follow her to New York City, and leave Florida behind? The older man offers advice—speaking from the heart—and it fills the younger man’s soul, so much that he leaps from the bench and bursts into song. It’s this young guy’s big romantic moment, and he dances away before almost getting hit by a car, and then sings at people inside a mall, in which one patron tries to side-kick him.

This hilarious sequence, which overlaps cliché storytelling with the unassuming public, is just one of many endearing moments in “Bad Trip,” a hidden camera comedy gem starring Eric André , Lil Rel Howery , and Tiffany Haddish that’s finally coming out on Netflix. Directed by Kitao Sakurai , the previous director behind numerous episodes of “The Eric André Show,” it shows an evolution in the hidden camera subgenre, given its warming spirit about people. Unlike the films that previously defined the subgenre, it’s not so much about creating a freak show from unsuspecting extras, but in noting what one would do when confronted with someone as delusional as André’s character Chris. Natural human behavior can be extremely funny, and Sakurai and André know it’s possible to bring it out of people without being mean-spirited. Footage in the end credits of the real people excited to learn that they’re in a movie—a comfort for us as well—confirms the chaos is controlled physically and emotionally, and that allows it to be a party.

“Bad Trip” is an excellent showcase for Eric André—it’s more mainstream than his talk-show-in-hell “The Eric André Show” and less watered down than his recent resume-boosting, commercial work like “The Lion King” and elsewhere. This role lets him scream, sprint, crash into things, and show off that he’s a sweetheart who wants to include you his absurdity. It’s no stretch to say that André is going to be a huge comedic force—I knew this when I caught his Legalize Everything stand-up tour in Chicago in 2019, when he had a sold-out Chicago Theater completely wrapped up in his FaceTime-ing with the parents of random audience members. He’s an affable anarchist with Robin Williams-like verve, and this project lets his burgeoning persona run wild alongside what the film advertises as “Real People. Real Pranks.”

André's hilarious earnest Chris is joined in the movie by Lil Rel Howery, who would have been known enough at the time of filming from his scene-stealing turn in “ Get Out ,” but is disguised as Chris’ reserved friend Bud. They have adorable chemistry as two friends in Florida who decide to drive to New York to reunite Chris with his high school crush Maria ( Michaela Conlin ) after two disastrous brief run-ins at Eric’s jobs. They support each other, like when Chris gets extremely drunk at a cowboy bar, or Bud finds himself inside a Porta Potty. Chris is the wide-eyed dreamer, and Bud is the demure rationalist. Their chemistry is as pure as the Golden Girls, so “Thank You For Being a Friend” is featured prominently in the soundtrack, in between scenes of slapstick pranks that further their road trip.

When Bud and Chris need a car to get to New York City, they “borrow” the bright pink Crown Vic that belongs to Bud’s sister, Trina (Tiffany Haddish), who Bud fears but is relieved when she's put in jail for breaking house arrest. And yet soon enough, Haddish crawls out from under a prison bus, having broken out and starts looking for her car. When it’s not where she stored it, she hunts Bud and Chris up the Eastern seaboard, making for some incredibly funny, abrasive scenes of her confronting people about whether they’ve seen them or her car that has “Bad Bitch” written on the window. Haddish bulldozes into every set-piece, exemplifying the film’s over-the-top spirit. When talking to progressively uncomfortable strangers, she doesn’t miss a beat and she relishes the opportunity to appear dangerous; when she steals a cop car and burns out of a donut shop parking lot, it’s one of her many triumphant moments.

“Bad Trip” is a collision of great improvisational actors and authentically bewildered reactions from people unaware that they’re now in Chris’ story—which makes Michaela Conlin’s performance as Maria all the more an essential middle to its Venn diagram. She enters the movie also as an innocent bystander, but that’s a deceptive comic energy that plays out in very funny ways as she pushes back against Chris’ delusions. In Chris’ prank-based daydreams, Conlin matches André’s intensity; that she has to play it straight in later scenes adds to the tension she creates, like when Chris tries to profess his love to her.

Just how funny is “Bad Trip”? After two viewings, it’s one of those comedies with a stable laughing average and high replay value, even if it doesn’t always hit you as hard. It knowingly plays a hit-and-miss game, and some scenes don’t entirely work (like a grocery store drug trip that plays out like a soft tribute to “The Eric Andre Show”), while other pranks go for discomfort more than big laughs (like when Chris gets gas springing all over a gas station). But the movie has speediness on its side, with pacing that takes the plotting from one prank to the next, often including crowds of people in the latest big dramatic confrontation that comes from Bud and Chris’ expected emotional arc. (A sudden car crash sequence is particularly well planned out, with cameras and extras ready nearby.) It’s a steady build to its ultimate destination of NYC, and every major set piece is constructed to bubble with discomfort before then skyrocketing over the top. An early scene at Chris’ smoothie shop job only begins with him making the drinks without spoons—it escalates to awkward tension with disgusted, annoyed customers, and then boom, a laugh-out-loud, gory finale that hits with impeccable, unexpected timing.

If certain parts of “Bad Trip” aren’t as out-and-out cry-laughing as the work put into them desires, the story is still involving as it adds the dimensionality of unscripted human behavior. And it doesn’t continue the hidden camera movie’s waning intention of dunking on dummies, a factor that also makes this story more fluid than the start-and-stop traps, primed for reaction shots, in something like “Jackass”-spinoff like “Bad Grandpa.” That’s the true sweet spot, in how its pranks are engineered to get the unexpected to interact with Bud, Chris, and or Trina, and see if strangers try to help. (“You turned on us!” says Chris, after a golfer starts swinging a club at Chris and Bud while their penises are enjoined by a Chinese fingertrap.) An amazing scene comes at a tense mid-point, when Trina appears at a restaurant, spreading around fliers with Bud and Chris’ dopey faces on them, advertising her desire to kill the two. She leaves. Bud and Chris then show up at the same place minutes later, and everyone’s response, with some people trying to warn them, and others not wanting to get caught in the middle, is incredible. “Bad Trip” knows how to stir things up, and its funniest scenes often involve real people getting in the mix, tested by the brilliant skills of André, Howery, and Haddish. The ways that some people react to their pranks might shock you in some ways, and absolutely will not in others.

‘Bad Trip’: Eric Andre, Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery Prank America

  • By David Fear

It makes a certain kind of sense that Bad Trip, Eric André’s entry into the Gonzo Comedy Hall of Fame (see: Jackass, Borat, Bad Grandpa ), starts in Florida. Not that the other 49 states of this fine U.S. of A. don’t have their share of goofballs, chowderheads, numbskulls, fuck-ups and jag-offs; it’s just that this particular Southeastern one has a reputation for American eccentricity that results in eyes bugging out, jaws dropping and shit going very wrong. Those “Florida Man” headlines are well-earned.

And the “Florida Man” energy is strong in this one, right from the get-go: No sooner has the comedian appeared onscreen, rocking a mechanic’s jumpsuit and washing a BMW in a West Grove car wash, then something genuinely WTF happens. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know it involves a vacuum hose and full frontal nudity. It also involves a customer who has no idea that he’s part of an elaborate prank that’s been set up for several rolling cameras, someone who is neither in on the joke nor the butt of it. The guy is just an innocent bystander who suddenly finds himself in the middle of a situation he hadn’t planned for or even possibly imagined, while a naked man tries desperately not to show his dick and balls to the world. “Florida Man Loses Clothes, Flashes Customers in Bizarre Car Detailing Accident.” Normally, you can’t make this stuff up. André engineers it like he’s in charge of a NASA launch.

The scene is over way, way too soon — a problem that plagues a lot of Bad Trip ‘s gotcha scenarios, but that’s the risk you take when you’re literally putting your ass out there when making variable-heavy comedy — but it still does what it needs to do, i.e. set the tone and set up the “story.” Note the scare quotes; abandon all hope, ye who want a narrative here, which is frankly missing the point. This is no more a movie than The Eric André Show is a talk show. (Though the director, Kitao Sakurai, has also worked on that Adult Swim gem.) It’s a delivery system for strung-together Situationist happenings and performance art, a fancy way of saying that everyday people get co-opted into sometime highly elaborate, often hilarious, remarkably effective smart-comics-doing-really-dumb-and-gross shit. Including, in one case, a bit that may or may not have involved being covered in actual fecal matter. We don’t know just how Jackass things got here.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

Right, sorry, the story: So when Chris (André) is cleaning the unsuspecting gent’s car, a second customer drives up. Her name is Maria (Michaela Conlin), and she was Chris’s high school crush. He was going to ask her out, but then whoosh go his clothes. Later, he finds out she lives in New York and runs an art gallery. If he’s ever town, drop by and see her. So Chris grabs his best friend Bud (Lil Rel Howery), they take the pink Crown Victoria that belongs to Bud’s sister, Trina ( Tiffany Haddish ) — she’s in prison, it’s all good — and plan a road trip to visit Chris’s soulmate. When Trina “releases” herself from the clink, she finds out that her car’s been stolen and decides to track these guys down across the Eastern seaboard.

There’s a version of Bad Trip in which you pay attention to this tender story of best friends who’ll do anything for each other, who have their ups and downs but still have each other’s backs, rednecks and psycho siblings and cops be damned. The version you’ll probably want to push to the forefront, however, is the one where these three comedians, respectively and together, stage the kind of truly outrageous shenanigans that make you wonder how the hell they got out of these scenes alive. Looking at my notes, I see nothing but a series of phrases: “Chinese Finger Trap,” “Smoothie Shop Blender,” “Cowboy Bar,” “Projectile Vomiting,” “A Priest,” “The Hamptons,” “Gorilla Selfie.” (That last one is genuinely above and beyond the call of duty.) To try and explain what they mean wouldn’t do the gags justice, though I will say that a sequence involving a a movie-musical number in a mall — which includes singing, dancing, a giant wedding cake and the threat of actual violence — is a work of genius.

In other, the sheer hilariousness of a number of individual bits here are enough to get you past slow spots and a few D.O.A. duds, and you come out of Bad Trip with a serious appreciation for this trio’s chops and ability to go with the flow. (Four, actually: Conlin can more than hold her own when she needs to.) And unlike the Jackass crew’s how-low-can-you-go competitions and Borat ‘s politicized exposés, there’s almost a sweetness to the way these folks prank the public. The everyday folks who find themselves having to deal with angry ex-cons or exchanges spiraling out of control aren’t marks; they’re more like collaborators in the movie’s “what if” set-ups. For every encounter in which you fear that André or Howery or Haddish are actually going to get the snot beat of out of them for antagonizing folks, there are a half dozen examples of people stepping in and defusing things, offering help, trying to de-escalate a blow-up. The end credits roll feature a bunch of “smile, you’re on Candid Camera” reveals that lead to smiles and yelps of “oh my god, that was crazy!” The joke’s not on them. They were just a key part of the trip.

Eww, That’s Gross. And We Like It That Way.

Why the tasteless humor of “Bad Trip,” starring Eric Andre, is a feat to be celebrated. Few can pull off transgression so skillfully.

bad trip movies like

By Jason Zinoman

If the comedy “Bad Trip” had premiered in theaters as intended until it moved to Netflix because of the pandemic, one already notorious scene would have surely sent crowds into a frenzy of groans and laughter. It involves an encounter between Eric Andre and a gorilla best not described in a family newspaper. Skillfully paced, preposterously tasteless, it’s a sequence that will alienate a portion of its audience, while cementing a cult reputation with another.

Whatever your reaction (I loved it), it’s as clarifying as any mission statement, showing that the makers of this movie are less interested in glowing reviews than visceral, raucous responses. It also signals the comeback of the gross-out comedy, a genre in decline, struggling with nerves about social censure and competition from the shock value of real life.

In a 2019 interview, no less an authority than John Waters, whose well-earned nicknames include the Pope of Trash and the Duke of Dirty, declared the death of the gross-out comedy. Last week, on Marc Maron’s podcast, he provided one explanation with this unassailable point. “It’s easy to be disgusting. It’s easy to be obscene,” he said. “But it’s not easy to be witty about it.”

This is what makes “Bad Trip” such a welcome feat, and why its impact may well eclipse that of all the movies that took home Oscars over the weekend. It’s cleverly crass, finding new ways to disgust with old-fashioned finesse.

The roots of the modern gross-out comedy can be traced to EC Comics and Mad Magazine, giddily demented publications devoured by kids in the middle of the last century, some of whom went on to create movies like “Animal House” and “American Pie.” This led to an arms race of vulgarity with increasingly rote bursts of taboo-busting along with hilarious landmarks: the contagious vomiting in “Stand By Me,” the hair gel in “There’s Something About Mary,” and the wildly influential “Jackass” franchise. (One of its creators, Jeff Tremaine, is a producer of “Bad Trip.”)

“Bad Trip” is firmly in this tradition, but updated for an era in which reality and fiction increasingly blur. It’s no surprise that Nathan Fielder and Sacha Baron Cohen, who have used the tools of documentary features to expand the palette of comedy, helped consult . “Bad Trip,” which has elements of a buddy movie, a romance and a prank show, spills every imaginable bodily fluid and stomps on delicate sensibilities, but manages to do this with warmth and earned sentiment.

Key to its success is the benevolently mischievous charisma of Eric Andre , an anarchic performer who always seems on the verge of accidental destruction, whether in his standup or his brilliantly experimental talk show . He moves through “Bad Trip” like a giant pane of glass in a silent movie. His fragility earns your sympathy right from the start.

In the first scene, his character, Chris, working at a Florida carwash, chats with a customer when he spots in the distance a woman who was his high school crush. Mouth agape, soupy music in the background, he explains how nervous he feels seeing her, before accidentally stepping toward a vacuum that suddenly sucks off his jump suit. He’s left naked as the girl approaches. He and the woman are actors, but the stranger watching this unfold is not, and this entire stunt is engineered to find comedy in his reaction while setting the gears of the plot in motion. It’s secondhand cringe comedy.

“Bad Trip” is organized around a series of increasingly elaborate set pieces that incorporate the response of real people not in on the joke. They are deftly integrated into a fictional story rooted in relationships that are given room to develop and fill out. Andre has superb chemistry with Lil Rel Howery, who plays his frustrated, sensible friend, Bud Malone, dragooned along for a road trip to find his lost love. They begin by stealing the car of Bud’s sister, performed brilliantly with an unhinged gusto by Tiffany Haddish, who plays off real people just as well as she does professionals.

These are some of the funniest comic actors working today, but what gets the biggest laughs here are their interactions with ordinary people. The director Kitao Sakurai (who has staged many episodes of “The Eric Andre Show”) alternates between slick action moviemaking and vérité shots that draw attention to the unscripted element. Just as prank comedy helped “Borat” add a spontaneity and danger to anti-Trump political humor, it does the same for gross-out humor. “Jackass” did this too, but it didn’t have the same narrative conviction.

There are some moments when you really worry for Andre, like when he gets drunk and causes havoc in a country bar . Whereas “Borat” takes a cutting satirical eye to many of the real people the character meets, “Bad Trip” aims for a much more endearing tone, even in its most confrontational scenes. It’s a movie that pingpongs between gross-out and feel-good.

The butt of the joke is usually Andre, and yet the movie is careful to keep the audience on his side. There’s an unexpected innocence here that makes the chaos more palatable. The way the sequences escalate demonstrates an alertness to structure and rhythm. There’s one scene where Haddish, in an orange jumpsuit, sneaks out from under a prison bus and asks a guy on the street for help escaping the police, who ultimately arrive. What follows is a series of chases, a farce that may remind some of classic Charlie Chaplin. But luckily, not too much. “Bad Trip” never wants to be too respectable. After all, who cracks up at good taste?

No mainstream film genre gets less respect than the gross-out comedy — not even its artistic cousin, gory horror, which also traffics in gushing bodily fluids, icky ids and gleeful transgression. There’s no comedy equivalent of the auteur David Cronenberg, who is often hailed for his intellectually challenging blood baths. Critics regularly dismiss gross-out movies as gratuitous and juvenile. Well, duh.

Kids understand some things better than adults, and that includes the comic potential of vomit. Gross-out comedy provokes explosive laughs, in part, because it exercises parts of the sense of humor that were abandoned when we grew up. It evokes the laughter we experienced before learning the proper ways to act. So while transgression is built into these movies, their pleasures are fundamentally nostalgic, which is why they can age poorly, trafficking in retrograde attitudes and tired stereotypes. But they don’t have to.

The best provocateurs pay close attention to shifts in sensitivities. And gross-out connoisseurs can be snobs, too. That’s why for a certain kind of fan, that gorilla scene signals a twisted kind of integrity, a commitment to those with a taste for demented moments of provocation above all else. You need high standards to be that lowbrow.

Inside the World of Comedy

Crowd work has grown more common, with some comedians now focusing their acts on it and sharing clips of their exchanges with audience members. But some comics say it takes away from the craft .

After he hit superstar status for his 2021 musical comedy, “Inside,” Bo Burnham has been conspicuously quiet. But he's managed to turn his supposed absence into a performance .

Netflix is giving comedy the live treatment . Sometimes that’s a good thing, as with John Mulaney’s variety show “Everybody’s in L.A.” But the Katt Williams special and Tom Brady roast were more uneven.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner has occasionally featured some great stand-up comedy. Colin Jost’s set will not join that list .

The pandemic dealt a major blow to improv in New York, but a new energy can be seen in performances throughout the city .

Movies Like Girls Trip That Comedy Fans Need To See

Girls Trip Dina looking skeptical

2017's "Girls Trip" proved to be a huge critical and commercial success. This rollicking comedy follows lifestyle maven Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall) as she tries to reconnect with three college friends on a trip to New Orleans' Essence Music Festival. Hilarity ensues, thanks to the film's zippy script and spectacular lead performances. Tiffany Haddish shines as the raunchy and fiercely loyal Dina, Jada Pinkett Smith is hilarious as serious-minded mom Lisa, and Queen Latifah balances humor and pathos as Sasha, a gossip blogger struggling to mend her relationship with Ryan.

For years, people have talked about a potential sequel to the hit film. While we may be getting closer to a second "Girls Trip"  film, anything on the horizon is still a ways off. Itching for a new female-fronted buddy comedy while you wait? We have you covered with this list of riotous movies every fan of "Girls Trip" needs to see.

Like "Girls Trip," "Bad Moms" focuses on a group of women who desperately need to let loose. Mila Kunis stars as Amy Mitchell , a Chicago mom who is torn between her home and her job at a coffee company. Her life erupts when she finds out her husband (David Walton) is cheating, sending her down a hilarious path of self-discovery.

Amy's rebellion is supported by Carla (Kathryn Hahn), a free-spirited single mom, and Kiki (Kristen Bell), a stay-at-home mom. Together, the women go on an all-night escapade that changes Amy's approach to parenting and encourages her to run for the PTA. This angers top-dog mom Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate), who will stop at nothing to maintain her control.

"Bad Moms" is a fun, raucous movie with something of substance to say about the pressures of motherhood and what determines "good" and "bad" parenting. In his review,  Rolling Stone's Peter Travers  wrote that the movie offers "hardcore hilarity for stressed moms looking for a girls night out. Guys should also check out 'Bad Moms' — you just might learn something."

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion

1997's "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" has become a cult classic on the strength of Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino's dazzling performances in the titular roles.  The film follows best friends Romy and Michele as they prepare to attend their 10-year high school reunion in Tucson, Arizona. The women, who now live together in Los Angeles, realize their work and personal lives are severely lacking, and attempt to make changes to impress the people who used to bully them. When all else fails, they invent backstories that will make them look good in front of their peers.

Kudrow and Sorvino carve out incredibly unique characters you can't help but root for, even when they go completely off the rails and claim to be responsible for inventing the Post-it Note. There are also strong supporting turns from Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, and Camryn Manheim as their fellow uncool graduates. "My work celebrates people who are different, people who are weird, and showing the value of that," director David Mirkin told Glamour in 2017. "It's a matter of making people realize that who they are is just fine, and you just have to find the path that works with who you are instead of trying to turn yourself into something you're not."

How to Be Single

"How to Be Single" is a funny little rom-com about Alice (Dakota Johnson), a paralegal who moves to New York City to start a new career and explore the single life. She has some help in her new activities, most notably from her crazy co-worker Robin (played by the always enjoyable Rebel Wilson) and her very single sister Meg (Leslie Mann). Things get complicated when she meets a promiscuous bartender named Tom (Anders Holm), who is himself infatuated with the married Lucy (Alison Brie). What results in a delightful ride through the world of dating.

Renowned movie critic Richard Roeper praised the film, saying he was "smitten" despite occasional moments of predictability. "It's one of the most endearing romantic comedies in recent memory, with some laugh-out-loud dialogue, gorgeous photography and uniformly charming performances from the entire cast," he wrote in his Chicago Sun-Times review. He's not wrong, especially when it comes to Wilson, whose over-the-top and un-self-conscious humor works like magic here.

Bachelorette

Most of the films on our list are slapstick flicks or comedies with a romantic bent. But 2012's "Bachelorette" is neither of those things. Instead, it's a darkly comic movie about relatively unlikable people — and that's what makes it so fantastic

A group of girlfriends must reluctantly throw one of their number a bachelorette party, despite being jealous and unenthused about her nuptials. Kirsten Dunst plays control freak Regan Crawford, Rebel Wilson plays Becky Archer, the bride-to-be, and Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan round out their clique as Katie and Gena, both messes in their own ways. What ensues is a night of drug-fueled fights, mishaps, and hook-ups, which causes many secrets to float to the surface.

The four leads absolutely devour their roles, especially Dunst, Caplan, and Fisher, who play deeply miserable people. The male cast members — including James Marsden, Adam Scott, Kyle Bornheimer, and Andrew Rannells — are solid as well. Though the film received mixed reviews , those who "got" it were full of praise. As critic Stephen Holden wrote in his review for the New York Times , "'Bachelorette' is more tartly written, better acted and less forgiving than male-centric equivalents like the 'Hangover' movies."

The House Bunny

2008's "The House Bunny" is about a Playboy bunny named Shelley Darlingson (Anna Faris) who finds herself homeless after being kicked out of Hef's mansion. Naturally, she decides that her next step should be to become a house mother to a sorority — but none of the cool ones will have her. Thus, Shelley joins the Zeta Alpha Zetas, a house full of awkward intellectuals and wayward misfits.

Faris dazzles as a ditzy but good-hearted blonde bombshell, and the supporting cast is equally uproarious. Nerdy Natalie (Emma Stone), sardonic Mona (Kat Dennings), awkward Joanne (Rumer Willis), and heavily pregnant Harmony (Katharine McPhee) are utterly irresistible. As Shelley takes the young women under her wing, she learns as much from them as they do from her. "The House Bunny" mixes an impressive amount of satire in with its bubbly comedy, resulting in a movie boasting as much heart as it has humor.

Someone Great

2019's "Someone Great" stars Gina Rodriguez as Jenny Young, a journalist dealing with two huge life changes: The break-up of her long-term relationship and a major job opportunity that requires a cross-country move. Looking to mourn and celebrate, she enlists her friends Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise) for one final fun-filled day (and night) in New York City.

"Someone Great" is slightly less rowdy than other entries on this list, but it makes up for its slightly more sedate tone with an enormous amount of heart. In her review for Vox,  Alissa Wilkinson called it "a hopeful break-up film." We agree, and would like to add that it's also about strong female friendships that can withstand change and personal growth. "Someone Great" boasts a wonderful turn from Rodriguez: In his review for The Atlantic , David Sims wrote, "The movie is grounded by a star turn from Gina Rodriguez, who sheds her chipper 'Jane the Virgin' persona to portray a more frayed romantic lead."

Bridesmaids

As a huge hit with an Oscar-nominated screenplay and one of the grossest food poisoning scenes in movie history, 2011's "Bridesmaids" is one of the best female-fronted buddy comedies around. Kristen Wiig stars as Annie Walker, a down-on-her-luck thirtysomething who is trying to bounce back from a failed business and relationship. When her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) gets engaged, she asks Annie to be her maid of honor. Hilarity ensues when Annie must go up against Lillian's new pal, the stylish and wealthy Helen (Rose Byrne), who wants to take things over.

Wiig, Byrne, and Rudolph are absolute delights in "Bridesmaids," but much of the movie is stolen by Melissa McCarthy , whose turn as Lillian's soon-to-be sister-in-law Megan earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Throw in a charming cop (Chris O'Dowd) as Annie's love interest, a plane ride made of movie magic, and Maya Rudolph ruining a wedding dress, and you have one heck of a funny movie.

The First Wives Club

In 1996's "The First Wives Club," Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler play three middle-aged women looking for revenge on the husbands who left them for younger mates. Having lost touch after college, these former friends are brought back together when the fourth member of their gang kills herself. As they soon discover, she was despondent after learning her husband — who got rich off her networking — has married his dramatically younger mistress. Having undergone similar indignities, the trio decides to do something about it.

Each actress plays to her strengths. Midler is an in-your-face spitfire as businesswoman Brenda Morelli-Cushman, Hawn is charismatically vain as washed-up actress Elise Elliot Atchison, and Keaton is zanily anxious as housewife Annie MacDuggan-Paradis. The fun the actresses are having is palpable, which critic Leonard Klady noted in his Variety review : "Midler, Hawn and Keaton are a refreshingly cohesive comedy combo with that indefinable thing known as screen chemistry." The acting legends are joined by a killer supporting cast, including stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Victor Garber, Stockard Channing, and Dame Maggie Smith.

We are aware that a lot of the films on this list include Rebel Wilson, but you have to give it to her — she plays off-the-wall oddballs so very well. In 2019's "The Hustle," Wilson stars as Penny Rust, a con artist with rather modest tactics who comes into contact with a more evolved, high-level crook named Josephine Chesterfield, played by Anne Hathaway. The women team up for a big con, only to get conned themselves.

The fun of this movie is in the mismatch between the two lead characters. This unlikely duo proves to be the ultimate odd couple: Watching the sophisticated Josephine try to train unruly Penny is pure delight. Though critics didn't care for the film, audiences certainly did , and we're willing to bet you will too. Like "Girls Trip," this is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, providing the cast with plenty of room to swan around, earning laughs. "The Hustle" also has lavish costumes and incredible scenery — always a plus in our books.

The Other Woman

In 2014's "The Other Woman," Cameron Diaz (in one of the final roles she took on before retirement) plays Carly Whitten, a lawyer who realizes that her new boyfriend Mark King (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is married. Not only that, he's also seeing Amber, a third woman (why it's not called "The Other Women," we don't know). In typical rom-com fashion, Carly teams up with Mark's wife Kate (Leslie Mann) and Amber (Kate Upton) to take him down.

This revenge comedy flick (boasting a performance from Nicki Minaj in a small supporting role, weirdly enough) offers exactly what viewers want from it. It isn't Diaz's best work, but it is an enjoyable little comedy that will make you laugh. Notably, Taylor Kinney, who plays Kate's brother Phil, brings real charm to his budding relationship with Carly. It's a nice contrast to the pranks the women pull on their philandering target.

The first time Melissa McCarthy teamed up with director Paul Feig, they gave us "Bridesmaids." The second time, they gave us "The Heat," a hysterical 2013 female buddy comedy that pairs McCarthy with the equally wonderful Sandra Bullock. (Don't sleep on Feig and McCarthy's other collaborations, "Spy" and "Ghostbusters," either.) McCarthy and Bullock play Shannon Mullins, a Boston Police detective with a big temper and a bigger mouth, and Sarah Ashburn, an uptight and unlikeable FBI agent. The women are forced to team up on a drug case, which of course causes them to fight each other as much as the actual villains.

This female spin on the buddy cop formula is delightful. But the particular reason this movie works so well is the fact that McCarthy and Bullock are comedic goldmines, with chemistry that is off the charts. As Peter Travers wrote in his Rolling Stone review , "There are only two reasons to see 'The Heat.' But they are formidable reasons, and they go by the names of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy." No other reasons are needed.

It seems like Netflix original movies either dominate cultural conversation ("Bird Box," anyone?) or fall completely under the radar. The latter fate is what greeted 2018's "Ibiza." Nonetheless, we think you should check it out — it has good gags, a killer script, and a super-talented cast. "Ibiza" follows Harper (Gillian Jacobs), who works in PR and must fly to Barcelona for her job. Her two best friends Nikki (Vanessa Bayer) and Leah (Phoebe Robinson) decide to tag along, and together, the women set off on an adventure. Their jaunt takes them to Ibiza after they meet a hot DJ named Leo West (Richard Madden) who is headed there for a gig.

"Ibiza" has all the elements necessary for success: There are laughs, a good love story, and scenery galore. The Los Angeles Times even compared it to "Girls Trip," though the review acknowledged it has "darker themes" and more "oddball humor." Critic Katie Walsh came to the following conclusion: "Although the script relies on gross-out body humor more often than it needs to, it manages to be deeper and more resonant than most girls gone wild comedies. A truly enjoyable trip."

Here's an easy recipe for fun: Put Tina Fey and Amy Poehler together , and magic will happen. It likely surprised no one when 2015's "Sisters" turned out to be quite funny as a result. While critics were mixed on the film, many praised the chemistry between the two leads. Writing for the Seattle Times, critic Moira Macdonald said, "You've pretty much seen this movie before, but the chemistry between Fey and Poehler — famously pals off-screen — is, of course, a kick, particularly in throwaway scenes where they seem to be happily wandering off script."

So, yes, you're treading into familiar territory here, but who wouldn't when they know they're guaranteed a good time? Fey plays Kate Ellis, a wildly messy and undependable single mom, while Poehler plays her younger, more together sister, a divorced nurse named Maura. When their parents (played by James Brolin and Dianne Wiest) decide to sell their childhood home, the sisters plan a blow-out party with all of their high school friends. This obviously means that a fantastic crew of comedians pop up, including other "Saturday Night Live" vets like Maya Rudolph, Bobby Moynihan, Rachel Dratch, Kate McKinnon, and Chris Parnell.

The Spy Who Dumped Me

Part comedy, part action flick, 2018's "The Spy Who Dumped Me" is a pleasurable buddy comedy in the vein of "Girls Trip," albeit with slightly more fight scenes.  Friends Audrey Stockman (Mila Kunis) and — yes, this is the character's real name — Morgan Freeman (Kate McKinnon) accidentally get caught up in a secret governmental mission, due to their affiliation with Audrey's ex-boyfriend Drew (Justin Theroux). Along the way, they encounter Sebastian Henshaw, another secret agent who may or may not be working with Drew.

The plot is very twisty and somewhat unhinged, but Kunis and McKinnon shine as unlikely action heroes. As you may expect, Kunis plays the more straightforward role while McKinnon plays the kooky one — something she does extremely well. As Peter Bradshaw noted in his review for the Guardian, "It's pretty much impossible for Kate McKinnon to dip below a basic level of funny." The film's reviews were mixed, but nearly every critic had similar levels of praise for McKinnon's comedic chops, and many also praised Kunis. For example, Time's review  praised Kunis as "a terrific comedian, particularly suited to screwball mayhem because nothing seems to faze her."

32 Movies So Bad, They're Actually Good

George Clooney still apologizes for 1997's 'Batman and Robin.'

bad movies wicker man

The joy of the "so bad it's good" movie is hard to explain if you're unfamiliar. Generally, the filmmakers have set out to make something good and important—and then missed the mark so badly that everyone agrees it's terrible. Whether it's a well-funded independent movie or big studio film, everyone has to be putting in effort to make an absolute cinematic turkey. But then. In a stunning turn of events, every tragic misfire becomes unintentionally hilarious, and the project tips into campy, compelling fun that fans love to watch and rewatch. (If you need more than what we've provided here, longstanding classic podcast How Did This Get Made? , which specializes in this type of movie, will give you even more good-bad movies to love).

Below, 32 of the most terrible movies that accidentally turned into m ust-watch films.

bad movies Moon fall

Did you know that the Moon is actually a hollow megastructure being overrun by evil alien tech? (Spoiler alert, I guess.) Well, that's where this movie is taking us, and it only gets more ridiculous from there. There's a moment where the characters try to outrun the moon!

'Look Who’s Talking Now'

bad movies Look who’s talking now

The third movie in any trilogy is always going to struggle with the weight of expectations. But when the third movie is the conclusion of a talking baby saga in which we instead hear the inner monologue of the family dogs (voiced by Danny DeVito and Diane Keaton, naturally), it's something exceptional.

bad movies Gigli

At the time, fans were excited for real-life couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck to star in a movie together. But they certainly didn't want this highly expensive flop, in which one of the main problems appeared to be that the pair didn't have any chemistry. Also, unrelated, Al Pacino is in this!

'Howard the Duck'

bad movies Howard the Duck

As explained by Zach Kornfeld on a Watcher YouTube video about good-bad movies, this is why you shouldn't trust the auteur theory (i.e., that talented creative people only ever have good ideas). George Lucas had just made the original Star Wars , and then he produced this.

'Battlefield Earth'

bad movies Battlefield earth

When it came out, this film was just seen as bad-bad instead of good-bad, winning just about every conceivable Razzie (plus, the production company went bankrupt!). But it's been parodied and referenced so much that, in hindsight, it's tipped into self-parody.

'Jingle All the Way'

bad movies Jingle all the way

This unintentionally hilarious holiday film really understood that Arnold Schwarzenegger could be funny—but that was the extent of its brilliance. Imagine having the audacity to put the actor in small-town America and making him a desperate salesman and normal family guy.

bad movies Congo

After the massive success of Jurassic Park , filmmakers grabbed other Michael Crichton books. The result was Congo , with a similar plot but replacing dinosaurs with monkeys; The above image is a pretty decent representation of what we ended up with, including the level of special effects.

'Jupiter Ascending'

bad movies Jupiter ascending

If you've never watched the movie where Eddie Redmayne whisper-screams his way through all his scenes, throw this one on. I'll warn you now, though, that you're going to want to ignore the plot, dialogue, and characterizations. Just let the experience wash over you.

bad movies Anaconda

This image really gets at the spirit of this film (including a very fake snake, "terrified" Ie Cube, and miserable J. Lo) but doesn't include a lot of the film's terribleness. Come for the bad snake CGI, stay for whatever accent Jon Voight is doing (and a mystifying death scene to top it off).

'Sleepover'

bad movies Sleepover

It's kind of a shame (and extremely foreshadowing) that the main characters of this film end up in a dumpster. Part of the reason this movie was overlooked was because it was released around the same time as Mean Girls . But the other reason is, despite its very famous cast, it's...a really awful movie.

'A View to a Kill'

bad movies A view to a kill

The James Bond franchise has given us many a weird, wacky, aged-very-badly movies. But A View to a Kill is something special, with Christopher Walken hamming it up as a villain, Roger Moore in his final role as the character (and looking exhausted at 57), and Grace Jones in a totally different movie and being the best part of it.

'Little Italy'

bad movies Little Italy

I know what you're thinking: Oh, I didn't know they made a film about the well-known neighborhood in New York City ! Well, I have some news: This is actually about the Little Italy in Toronto, Canada, and that's just the start of the film's many, many hilarious challenges.

'Miami Connection'

bad movies Miami connection

Martial artist Y.K. Kim, who wrote, directed, and starred in this martial arts film, had never made a film before this. The result, Miami Connection , tanked immediately, but upon its rerelease was held up as a magnificent specimen of good-bad filmography, and it's now a cult classic.

'Plan 9 From Outer Space'

bad movies Plan 9 from outer space

Proving that the "so bad it's good" movie is not a new invention! This 1957 Ed Woods-directed movie is campy and weird and self-serious and out of sync and clunky and badly edited and full of errors and, frankly, a messy, low-budget delight from start to finish.

'Mac and Me'

bad movies Mac and me

Have you ever wondered what would have happened if E.T. had been bad? Well, you've just described Mac and Me ! It's almost a replica of the former film's plot, but with real bad creature effects and even worse product placement for brands like Coke and McDonalds.

'Star Wars: Episode 1 - Phantom Menace'

bad movies Phantom menace

I am perhaps being unkind to the first of the Star Wars sequels (which has had a sort of redemption arc in more recent years), but I stand by it: When fans of the series, myself included, heard there was going to be a new movie, we couldn't have been more excited. And then it was this movie.

bad movies Old dogs

There's an (unverified) story that this movie started life as an R-rated comedy that really leaned in on the raunch, but was heavily re-cut and re-packaged as a light and fun PG comedy. The result is a tonal-shifting nightmare that remains absolutely fascinating in execution.

'Street Fighter'

bad movies Street fighter

A movie based on a video game is already treading on thin ice, so to speak, but casting Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia (that's the award-winning actor who played Gomez Addams) and then giving them a whole lot of nonsense to say and do is...compelling.

'The Devil's Advocate'

bad movies The devil's advocate

Al Pacino's the devil (and he's scream-acting almost the whole time)! That might sound like a spoiler, but if you've seen the trailer, looked at the poster, or considered the title in any way, you won't be surprised. What's hilarious is that the movie waits over an hour to tell you as if it's some big reveal.

bad movies Con air

Take a bunch of convicts and put them on a plane, where they immediately hijack it—oh and the ringleader is John Malkovich, swinging for the fences—with John Cusack and Nicolas Cage (the latter in a very bad wig) trying to stop them. Camp doesn't even begin to describe it!

bad movies The room

Any "good bad film list" is going to have The Room on it. Tommy Wiseau (who conceived, wrote, and starred in it) may retrospectively call the film a dark comedy, but it was absolutely designed to be a dramatic film—and it will be the worst drama you've ever seen.

'Drop Dead Fred'

bad movies Drop dead fred

If you like film podcasts, check out the Drop Dead Fred episode of How Did This Get Made? . Two of the four hosts absolutely love the film for its message about self-love and identity, and the other two think that this is the worst, weirdest film they've ever seen. It inspires division to this day!

bad movies Cats

If you're familiar with bad movies generally, you might know about the troubled history of Cats , with many stars (including Taylor Swift ) attached to the project and a rushed production resulting in terrible visual effects. But nothing will ever be funnier to me than the fact that a rough cut of the film apparently exists where the CGI cats all had...buttholes.

'Showgirls'

bad movies Showgirls

(CW: sexual assault.) This film (notable for, among other things, to be an NC-17 movie with a wide release) was not designed to be a satire—but it's now considered high art by film fans for its bad acting, weird nude scenes, nonsensical plot, and general incoherence.

bad movies Troll 2

Let's start with the fact that Troll 2 isn't a sequel, despite having a two in the title. Then add in the fact that the crew spoke Italian and the cast spoke English. Then the plot (goblins turn people into plants, then eat them). It's considered one of the worst films ever made!

'Kung Pow: Enter the Fist'

bad movies Kung pow enter the fist

The history behind this movie is already wild: The new film took footage from an old film and then replaced the main character with Steve Oedekerk and changed the "plot" entirely. The result is a "satire" of martial arts films that is complete, unintentionally hilarious nonsense. (It's also aged...very poorly! But in a funny way!)

bad movies Face/off

With two over-the-top actors impersonating each other (sort of) and each one trying to outdo the other's performance, a movie about a cop and criminal who literally switch faces is the best possible use of everyone's time. John Travolta and Nic Cage deserve retrospective Razzies/ Oscars .

'The Happening'

bad movies The happening

Where to begin with this Shyamalan disaster? Before the dreadfully miscast leads, before the hilariously inept script, there's the premise (spoiler alert): Plants are now emitting toxins to kill people. Which means there are a lot of scenes of people running and then a cut to some grass gently waving in the wind.

'Deep Blue Sea'

bad movies Deep blue sea

Deep Blue Sea was hoping to outdo Jaws in every way, with bigger sharks, better effects, and cooler deaths. It failed in every single way, but that failure was so delightful that it remains beloved for fans of bad movies (including an epic How Did This Get Made? podcast).

'Batman and Robin'

bad movies Batman and Robin

See also: The movie that George Clooney still apologizes for. His take on Batman is...not good (the bat suit has nipples on it, for starters), but frankly, his performance is mild compared to the OTT glories of Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy (yes, that's Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman).

'The Wicker Man'

bad movies The wicker man

"Not the beeeeeees!!" If you're familiar with that particular meme, and you want to experience it for an entire movie, then I highly suggest you put on this film and watch Nic Cage go wild for almost two hours. It's so much more than the bees, promise.

'Maximum Overdrive'

bad movies maximum overdrive

The only movie Stephen King ever directed (he's on the record saying he was very strung out during production) is about murderous technology—specifically, a killer truck with a green goblin face attached to the front that forces the humans to give it gasoline. No, really.

10 Best Vacation Movies To Watch Like Aftersun

Aftersun cast & character guide, this devastating movie with a 96% rt score is now on netflix & it's a must watch before gladiator 2.

  • Calum's young age as a father shapes his dynamic with Sophie, adding layers of complexity and emotion to their bond.
  • Aftersun delicately explores heavy themes like depression and love through the lens of young Sophie's memory of a vacation with her father.
  • The small age gap between Calum and Sophie in the movie is crucial, as it reflects a mirror image of their relationship and its tragic end.

In Aftersun , the age gap between Calum and Sophie is a significant feature of their father-daughter relationship. Directed by Charlotte Wells in her feature debut, the movie follows the childhood memory of Sophie (Frankie Corio) on holiday with her single father, Calum (Paul Mescal), at a Turkish resort. Recently separated from his wife, Calum is using this vacation as an opportunity to bond with his daughter. He is a young father without much experience or maturity , but he is clearly trying his best. Mescal's performance earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the 2023 Oscars .

Aftersun is a powerful movie that explores heavy themes like depression, love, and guilt, all through the lens of a young girl's memory. With a whopping 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie has received immense critical acclaim for its sensitive, restrained storytelling and nuanced performances. It imbues a sense of melancholy underneath the seemingly mundane features of a vacation , with hints that young Sophie is largely oblivious to, but most viewers will pick up on. A central aspect of their dynamic is how much older Calum is than Sophie, which profoundly affects the nature of their relationship.

Charlotte Wells' Aftersun shares similarities with other emotional vacation movies, including Call Me By Your Name and The Lost Daughter.

Calum Is Only 19 Years Older Than His Daughter Sophie In Aftersun

In the movie, he is just 30, while she's 11.

In Aftersun, Calum is only 19 years older than his daughter, Sophie. This means he had her when he was still a teenager, and, in the events of the movie, he is only 30, while she's 11. This dynamic renders him a young, inexperienced father who doesn't have the maturity or skills for the role yet. He feels quite lost and confused as a father , though he clearly loves his daughter deeply and wants to connect with her. The small age gap also gives Calum and Sophie a friendly relationship, as they enjoy themselves through whimsical activities on vacation.

Why Calum & Sophie's Ages Are So Important In Aftersun

She's currently the same age as he was during their trip together.

Calum and Sophie's ages are extremely important in Aftersun, not just because of his lack of experience and maturity as a father. The film follows 30-year-old Sophie reflecting on the vacation with her father, because she's currently the same age that Calum was at the time . The Aftersun ending suggests that Calum died by suicide following the trip: he is clearly depressed and struggling with his mental health. In one scene, he admits his surprise at making it to 30 and expresses a lack of belief that he will make it to 40.

The movie is thus a rendition of her memories, visualized through home videos of the trip that she's watching in the present day.

Despite being on a vacation with his daughter, Calum experiences little joy, and seems indifferent and detached throughout Aftersun. However, the extent of this is obviously lost on young Sophie at the time. The movie is thus a rendition of her memories, visualized through home videos of the trip that she's watching in the present day. She is presumably looking for answers to explain her father's subsequent suicide , trying to see signs that she couldn't when she was 11, hoping to finally understand him now that they're the same age.

The 10 Best Movies To Watch if You Liked 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die'

It’s no secret that 2024’s summer movie season has gotten off to a relatively slow start. While Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were successful within the first half of the year, films like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Fall Guy have fallen well short of expectations for proposed summer blockbusters. That being said, the latest legacy sequel, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, may be the crowd-pleasing favorite that gets audiences excited about going to the movie theater again. The franchise formula proved to be successful, with positive reviews indicating that the film should be more than satisfactory for massive fans of the franchise.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die sees directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah returning to the franchise after Bad Boys For Life became a hit in 2020. In the new sequel, Mike Lowery ( Will Smith ) and Marcus Burnett ( Martin Lawrence ) team up once again to clear the name of their departed captain, Conrad Howard ( Joe Pantaliano ). While it certainly relies on the mythology of the previous installments in the series, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a throwback to classic buddy cop action blockbusters . Here are ten movies to watch if you like Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

10 ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ (1984)

Directed by martin brest.

The Bad Boys franchise has succeeded thus far thanks to the unmatched chemistry between Smith and Lawrence; even when the films’ plots are less satisfying, seeing these two fun characters interact is more than satisfying. Similarly, the original Beverly Hills Cop coasted on the charisma of Eddie Murphy when he was at the height of his powers. While Murphy had proven himself as a comedy star with 48 Hrs. and Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop was proof that he could be an action lead.

Although the film earned a surprise Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, Beverly Hills Cop is far more action-packed than it's remembered as being , and gets surprisingly dark in some instances. Although its two direct sequels failed to capture the same unique tone, there is a heavy amount of anticipation for the upcoming legacy sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F that is scheduled to hit Netflix this summer.

9 ‘Running Scared’ (1986)

Directed by peter hyams.

The appeal of the Bad Boys films is that they pair two actors with completely different sensibilities on screen together; while Lawrence is well-known for appearing in broad slapstick comedies, Smith is more closely associated with action films like Independence Day and I Am Legend . When it comes to cop thrillers about mismatched partners, Running Scared succeeded by pitting two very different comedic actors against each other. Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines starred in this classic Chicago film about two cops that are tasked with pulling off one last case before their retirement.

Similar to Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Running Scared finds the perfect balance between action and comedy . Hyams, an underrated filmmaker behind gems like 2010: The Year We Made Contact and Capricorn One , manages to pull off some impressive stunt sequences. However, the great one-liners traded between Crystal and Hines ensure that the film never risks taking itself too seriously.

8 ‘Midnight Run’ (1988)

Bad Boys may have been a successful franchise for nearly three decades, but buddy cop movies simply don’t get better than Midnight Run . After perfecting the genre with Beverly Hills Cop , director Martin Brest crafted this crowd-pleasing favorite about a hitman ( Robert De Niro ) who is forced to transport a prisoner ( Charles Grodin ) over the course of a long road trip. Wacky hijinks ensue, leading to an action spectacle that results in a surprising friendship.

The Bad Boys films have succeeded thus far because they show how the passage of time affects the characters. Similarly, Midnight Run succeeds compared to other action comedies because of its more heartfelt qualities. While De Niro and Grodin trade more than a few insults at each other’s expense, there’s a heartfelt connection that is bridged between them by the time the story wraps up.

Midnight Run

7 ‘the last boy scout’ (1991), directed by tony scott.

Considering that the original Bad Boys was released in 1995, all of its sequels retain the same kinetic, over-the-top style that defined one of the best decades in the history of action cinema . Tony Scott helmed many of these classics, but The Last Boy Scout is a unique buddy cop film that has grown a strong cult fanbase. The film centers on an idiosyncratic private investigator ( Bruce Willis ) who teams up with a popular athlete ( Damon Wayans ) to explore a political conspiracy mystery related to the NFL.

While Willis and Wayans are unmatched in their star power, The Last Boy Scout benefited from a great script from screenwriter Shane Black. Black, who would go on to write and direct such classics as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys , knows how to write cunning, snappy dialogue like no one else.

6 ‘Lethal Weapon 4’ (1998)

Directed by richard donner.

One of the most impressive aspects of Bad Boys: Ride or Die is that it doesn’t simply feel like a “greatest hits” of previous entries; four entries in, and the Bad Boys series is still breaking new ground. While it's hard to retain enthusiasm for a franchise that already has a trilogy under its belt, Lethal Weapon 4 was a solid action sequel that brought the franchise to a satisfying conclusion. Although the dynamic between Riggs ( Mel Gibson ) and Murtaugh ( Danny Glover ) was enough for the film to succeed, Lethal Weapon 4 also introduced Jet Li and Chris Rock into the franchise.

Like Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Lethal Weapon 4 succeeded by adding more comedy to the series and acknowledging that the central duo had aged since their first adventure. While rumors persist that a fifth installment in the series could still be in development, Lethal Weapon 4 at least allowed for the beloved franchise to go out on a high note.

Lethal Weapon 4

5 ‘starsky & hutch’ (2004), directed by todd phillips.

One of the primary influences behind Bad Boys were many of the classic buddy cop action series from the 1970s. While the original show was a bit more grounded and serious, Todd Phillips ’ reimagining of the Starsky & Hutch show was a hilarious send-up of action comedies. The titular roles were played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, each of whom brought their singular comedic charm to the project. The film lampoons how completely incompetent and ill-equipped for their responsibilities the two protagonists really are.

While Phillips would eventually trek into more serious territory as a filmmaker with his Academy Award-nominated drama Joker and the underrated satire War Dogs , Starsky & Hutch contains much of the broad comedy that makes Bad Boys: Ride or Die so entertaining. Even the most intense moments of action and spectacle are undercut by clever one-liners.

Starsky & Hutch

4 ‘hot fuzz’ (2007), directed by edgar wright.

Bad Boys soon became so popular that it was placed on a shortlist of the greatest action films of the 1990s. Ironically, Bad Boys II is referenced specifically in Edgar Wright’s action comedy Hot Fuzz . Wright’s absurd satire of cop thrillers focuses on a big city police officer ( Simon Pegg ) who is forced to work with a mild-mannered cop ( Nick Frost ) in a small town, only to discover that there is a larger conspiracy at play. As with all of the films in Wright’s unofficial “Three Colors Trilogy,” Hot Fuzz ’s success rests on the chemistry between Frost and Pegg, who are best friends in real life.

Hot Fuzz is a love letter to action cinema and certainly doesn’t skimp on great set pieces. While it's subversive and silly in the way that many of Wright’s films are, Hot Fuzz makes full use of its R-rating during the bloody climax.

3 ‘Men in Black 3’ (2012)

Directed by barry sonnenfield.

The success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die is somewhat surprising, as Smith does not always do sequels; he famously did not reprise his roles in either Independence Day: Resurgence or The Suicide Squad , and the development of a sequel to I Am Legend has been stagnant since 2007. However, Men in Black 3 shows why Smith benefits from returning to play a character. While Men in Black II was a major disappointment, the third entry in Barry Sonnenfeld ’s science fiction comedy series took a more heartfelt approach to the material.

The third Men in Black film sees Smith’s Agent J traveling back in time to the 1960s, where he meets a younger version of his partner, Agent K ( Josh Brolin ). Men in Black 3 allowed Smith to exercise his charisma by playing one of his best characters. Unsurprisingly, the subsequent sequel, Men in Black International, failed without his involvement.

Men in Black 3

2 ‘the hitman’s bodyguard’ (2017), directed by patrick hughes.

Star power is a major reason why Bad Boys: Ride or Die lives up to the hype. While it may not reach the same heights as previous installments in the series, the new film is at its best when it allows Lawrence and Smith to bounce off each other's energies. There’s no better example of the importance of good casting in a buddy cop movie than The Hitman’s Bodyguard . The 2017 action film centers on a bodyguard ( Ryan Reynolds ) who is forced to protect a rival assassin ( Samuel L. Jackson ) as they await the trial of a dangerous dictator ( Gary Oldman ).

While it won’t win any points for originality, The Hitman’s Bodyguard succeeds thanks to the relentless charm of its two stars. Reynolds is perfect at playing snappy, sardonic action heroes, and no one delivers enraged profanities quite like Jackson. The film also served as a breakout for director Patrick Hughes , who returned to direct the underrated sequel, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

The Hitman's Bodyguard

1 ‘ambulance’ (2022), directed by michael bay.

While Michael Bay only directed the first two films in the Bad Boys series, the subsequent entries certainly retain some of his visual and aesthetic hallmarks. He may have wasted too many years making terrible Transformers sequels, but Bay made a serious comeback with his getaway thriller Ambulance . Set in Los Angeles, the film follows two lifelong friends ( Jake Gyllenhaal and Yayah Abdul Mateen II ) as they hijack an ambulance while eluding the cops.

Ambulance features all the haphazard mayhem and violence that Bay is best at , as he is free to utilize all the extravagance of an R-rating. Like in the original Bad Boys films, Bay succeeds because he never stops to question the absurdity of the situation. Between its frequent drone shots and jaw-dropping final set piece , Ambulance has already marked itself as one of Bay’s best, alongside The Rock and Armageddon.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Every Bad Boys Movie Ranked From Worst To Best, Including Ride Or Die

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, whatcha gonna do when we rank you?

Though they’re not everyone’s favorites, I can’t get enough of the Bad Boy movies, and it’s been that way for about as long as I can remember. Over the years, I’ve watched Will Smith ’s Mike Lowrey and Martin Lawrence ’s Marcus Burnett pull off some crazy feats, nab some bad guys, and solve various crimes in and around the greater Miami metropolitan area. From the franchise starter back in 1995 to the most recent addition, you could say I’m a ride-or-die fan of this buddy cop action series , and I’ll be one for life.

That said, after watching Bad Boys: Ride or Die in theaters (an experience that was wild as hell), I decided to go back and rewatch the entire franchise and rank them from worst to best. But, don’t let the term “worst” fool you, as I am a big fan of all four movies and will be there on opening day if Bad Boys 5 happens .

Marcus (Martin Lawrence) and Mike (Will Smith) fist bump in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die

4. Bad Boys: Ride Or Die (2024)

I don’t really see this as last place because the movie is just so much fun, but I have to start things off with the most recent entry in the franchise, Bad Boys : Ride or Die . Though I didn’t think the movie was as bad as described in CinemaBlend’s official Bad Boys: Ride or Die review , it felt like some things were missing while others felt rushed or heavyhanded.

Working against Ride or Die are things like characters disappearing between movies with no explanation, key events from previous films being retconned to work within the plot, and Mike getting married to a woman we’ve never met before who's treated like a familiar face. However, the action sequences are great thanks to Adil & Bilall’s unique style, the banter between Smith and Lawrence is top-notch, and the short runtime makes this a rather straightforward affair that doesn’t let off the gas.

Though it was a breath of fresh air for the underperforming 2024 box office, had some oddly cathartic moments , and had some of the greatest hits, Bad Boys: Ride or Die at times felt like a compilation instead of a continuation.

Martin Lawrence takes an upsetting phone call while Will Smith watches in Bad Boys II.

3. Bad Boys II (2003)

If Bad Boys II was about 25-30 minutes shorter, it would be in the number-one spot on this list, but man, is this movie bloated. Clocking in at a little under two-and-a-half hours, this Michael Bay -directed 2003 summer blockbuster includes so many scenes that could have either been shorter or left out entirely (I’m looking at you electronics store scene). Hell, Mike and Marcus don’t even cross paths with Jordi Mollà's Johnny Tapia until nearly an hour into the movie.

When Bad Boys II is working, it’s WORKING! The action is wild and ups the ante so much that it makes the first film look like a made-for-TV movie. The highway chase (one of three in the summer 2003 blockbuster season alongside 2 Fast 2 Furious and The Matrix Reloaded ), the attack on the KKK rally that opens the film, and quite possibly the best Michael Bay hero shot of the franchise, you could make an argument for this being one of the best action movies of all time .

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

However, with so many characters, so many bits, and so many subplots holding it down and extending the runtime, it’s impossible to put Bad Boys II ahead of the original Bad Boys or For Life .

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys

2. Bad Boys (1995)

For the longest time, I was in the “ Bad Boys II is better than Bad Boys ” camp, after watching all four movies in the span of a few days, I have to admit that I’ve changed my mind. While the first sequel has the GOAT of hero shots ( look at it and soak in the awesomeness ), a thrilling chase sequence, and perhaps the franchise’s most over-the-top villain, its predecessor is a lean, mean, buddy cop action movie machine that’s pretty much all killer and no filler. So much happens in its sub-two-hour runtime, but it never feels bloated, slow, or bogged down in any way. In fact, it could have had a few extra minutes and I would have been fine.

There are a few things that really sell this movie, and chief among them is the pairing of Mike and Marcus. They’ve already been partners for some time when we are introduced to them in the hilarious opening scene, but we immediately feel like we’ve known them and there’s no need for an origin story slowing things down in the first act. Second, Tea Leoni’s Julie Mott is not only a great character with a tremendous story, but she also provides so much exposition and fleshes out the Lowrey/Burnett dynamic.

However, a lot of the movie feels underdeveloped and rushed, but this might be a case of “hindsight is 20/20” as I look back nearly 30 years later. But, because this is Michael Bay’s directorial debut, I’m willing to overlook the movie’s short list of shortcomings.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence walking down street in Bad Boys for Life

1. Bad Boys For Life (2020)

Fans of the series had to wait a long time between Bad Boys II and Bad Boys for Life , and a lot of that was because Will Smith didn’t want to wreck the franchise . It appears that the long break was worth it, as it was not only one of the biggest 2020 box office draws , it’s also the best entry in the franchise so far.

Directors Adil & Bilall, who took over the reins from Michael Bay, added so much style to the Bad Boys franchise while also adding a lot of substance and emotion to the story as well. First, the action, which was turned up a notch and modernized from what had come before, created a fresh and unique spin and pushed Smith and Lawrence (and the rest of the cast) to their limits, and it worked masterfully. There’s still that signature style the franchise has always had, but the young directors honored that while also treading new ground.

Everything about Mike's story in Bad Boys For Life is great as well. From him getting shot and left for dead to finding out that the shooter was a son he never knew about to coming to terms with his past, so much happens in under two hours. The decorated detective with a trust fund experiences so much character growth over the course of the story, and it takes him in a new direction that was further explored in Ride or Die and hopefully will do the same in the future.

Like I said at the beginning, I love all four of these movies and will be there day one when the next installment finally hits the big screen. Until then, make sure to check out our 2024 movie schedule for all the latest on the big releases landing in theaters (and on streaming services) this year.

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.

‘The Bad Orphan’: Betsy Brandt on Why Natalia Grace-Inspired Lifetime Movie Will Keep You Guessing

The Bad Orphan

“I love those stories that whatever you think is happening — it’s not that,” says Betsy Brandt . And this psychological thriller fits the bill: “It’s a fantastic story, and it’s not what it looks like.”

If you’re familiar with last year’s true crime blockbuster The Curious Case of Natalia Grace and its 2024 follow-up, Natalia Speaks , you’ll recognize the bones of the jaw-dropping tale that is The Bad Orphan , premiering Saturday, June 22 at 8/7c on Lifetime . In the new film, Karl ( Mark L. Taylor , Reacher ) and Jessica (Brandt) — already parents of a daughter named Rhiannon (Eve Edwards, The Good Doctor ) — spend years trying to expand their family. They ultimately adopt an 8-year-old orphan who might be more troubled than they first thought.

“They’re like, this is what we need. We don’t feel like our family’s complete,” says the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul actress, who’s also an executive producer. “They adopt this adorable child, and then the rug is pulled out from under them.” (In the real-life case of Ukrainian Grace, who has dwarfism, her adoptive parents in Indiana be lieved she was actually an adult and a dangerous con artist.)

Jessica’s suspicions about Gabby ( Chloe Coco Chapman , above right, with Brandt) start slowly as she notices actions that seem a little off. “Gabby does some things where Jessica says to herself and to her husband, ‘It just doesn’t add up,’” Brandt reveals. “But then there’s always a reason. It’s a lot of back and forth in their minds.”

Jessica finds it difficult to reconcile her doubts with her maternal instincts. “As she questions this little girl she adores, it’s tugging at her heartstrings. No matter what Gabby does, she looks at her and wants to mother her and love her,” Brandt says.

Gabby is the first-ever TV role for newcomer Chapman. “Chloe made my job incredibly easy, because she is just fantastic and a really special person. We were incredibly lucky. I don’t think this movie could have happened without her,” Brandt says. “Both these characters do things where they’re not their best selves. I leaned over to her after the first table read and said, ‘It’s fun to be bad, isn’t it?’” It’ll be fun to watch too.
