The 10 Best Snorkeling Tours On Oahu, Hawaii

This is the ultimate guide for the top Snorkeling tours on Oahu. There’s nowhere in the world quite like Oahu when it comes to marine life. With about a thousand miles of coral reef surrounding the Hawaiian Islands, snorkeling is one of the island’s most popular water activities. You can come face to face with tropical fish, green turtles, spinner dolphins, spotted eagle rays, and even hear the calls of majestic humpback whales.

My personal favorites are Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise by Catamaran   to snorkel with green turtles and Oahu Snorkel Cruise: Swim With Turtles In Waikiki to snorkel, eat delicious food and learn about Hawaiian history.

Oahu Snorkeling – The Complete Guide

Oahu snorkeling can be great fun. It was here that Galen first fell in love with snorkeling at a young age, at Oahu’s world famous Hanauma Bay. We have since snorkeled it all.

Where are the best snorkeling spots on Oahu? They are spread out all over the island (see map below). If you are staying in Waikiki you can take some boat tours from there. But we recommend you also rent a car to snorkel some great areas on the north and west shores.

Lanikai Beach – A stunning east shore beach with fair snorkeling.

Ko Olina Lagoons  – View fish and turtles in one of these enclosed resort bays with beautiful beaches.

Kahe Point – You can see both fish and live coral by boat tour or shore access.

Makaha Beach Park – Swim with turtles at this large west shore beach.

North Shore

Waimea Bay – Find decent summer snorkeling at this famous surfing beach.

Three Tables – One of the best places to snorkel on Oahu.

Sharks Cove – This popular little cove is terrific for swimming with fish.

What’s Oahu Snorkeling Like?

Many Free Snorkeling Opportunities at Fantastic Beaches We really like the freedom of going snorkeling on our own schedule from beaches. And Oahu does not disappoint this way. Yes, you do have to pay for a reservation to snorkel Hanauma Bay, but nearly every other location is free.

By the way, if you love snorkeling like us, you will also love our free monthly snorkeling newsletter .

Get Personal With Fish There are a number of places on Oahu where you can see a lot of fish. Some of these are protected from fishing, which always makes the fish very friendly. You can get lots of great close-up pictures of your favorite tropical fish.

Large school of different tropical fish seen while snorkeling on Oahu.

Expect Crowds and Okay Snorkeling, Not Great Oahu has six times the population of the next most populated island and receives twice as many visitors as the next most visited island. This has done a good bit of damage to the health of the sea life.

For sure, Oahu snorkeling does not compare to Maui or the  Big Island ; it has fewer locations and the health of the sea life is not as magnificent. So consider adding one of those islands to your trip for better snorkeling.

Two snorkelers enjoying Oahu.

It’s a Beautiful Island Relax, you are in Hawaii after all, and it is easy to bliss out here, watching a sunset with someone you love. The landscape and seascapes on Oahu are fantastic, from the steep tree covered mountain passes, to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. Even if you are driven nuts by cities and traffic, you can find a serene hangout on Oahu.

Oahu Snorkeling Safety and Travel Tips

Snorkeling Seasons Oahu has snorkel spots all around the island (see map below). Although there are few on the east side because it is exposed to the common trade wind direction. The snorkeling on the north and south shores is fairly seasonal. While it is certainly possible to snorkel in the winter, your chances at some of the better locations on the north shore are much greater in the summer. You’ve heard of the north shore surfing scene, right?

In the summer, there can be a south swell making the south shore beaches dicey for snorkeling, too. Read our when to snorkel Hawaii page for more on planning your trip for the best snorkeling.

Some Oahu Snorkeling Has Open Ocean Exposure About half the beaches we describe are openly exposed to ocean currents and swell and a few more are partially exposed. That means you need to be a good reader of the sea and a strong swimmer if you go into those exposed areas.

Where to Stay for the Best Oahu Snorkeling? Nearly all the hotels and resorts on Oahu are in Waikiki, but unfortunately the snorkeling close to Waikiki is poor. Finding places to stay outside of Waikiki or Honolulu might be a challenge, but our Oahu snorkeling accommodations page aims to help you figure that out.

ABOUT LIVING OCEAN TOURS

At Living Ocean Tours we have dedicated our lives and our livelihood to observing, preserving, respecting and enjoying our living ocean. We rise above by giving personalized and private attention to each guest. No two people are alike, and we make it our daily goal to make you feel at home whether you are snorkeling with turtles or relaxing on a sunset cruise from Waikiki.

Our snorkeling trips depart daily from Kewalo Basin Boat Harbor located conveniently adjacent to Waikiki Beach. Join us for a two hour snorkeling excursion to Waikiki’s Turtle Canyons.

Our expert guides will be with you in the water to point out all the interesting marine life and lend a helping hand if needed. We provide all equipment including snorkeling flotation vests, masks, fins and snorkels.

Prior to entering the water our crew will give a brief lesson with some tips on how to use the snorkeling equipment and describe some of the marine life that we expect to see in the water.

What sets our trips apart from other snorkeling tours in Waikiki is the knowledge of our crew for our local marine life and our passion for teaching our guests how to get comfortable snorkeling while respecting our local environment. We have about a 95% success rate at finding the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles on our snorkeling trips, but you will enjoy observing and learning about many more of our local species of tropical fish, many of which are found only in Hawaiian waters.

THE LIVING OCEAN FAMILY

What you'll experience with living ocean, snorkel with sea turtles.

At Waikikiʼs Turtle Canyons it is common to see up to 10 Hawaiian green sea turtles! These turtles spend time on the surface to breathe, which gives us an amazing opportunity to get a great view! Even though turtles are wild animals it is incredibly rare to come on one of our Waikiki snorkeling cruises and not get a chance to snorkel with turtles!

RESPONSIBLE ECO-TOURISM

During your Honolulu snorkeling tour you will learn how to observe with the marine life in a responsible way. Giving the turtles room so that they feel comfortable to catch their breath on the surface as well as never touching the turtles are a few things you can do to keep Hawaiian green sea turtles safe for years to come.

SEE TROPICAL REEF FISH

Snorkel with all of Hawaiiʼs colorful tropical fish! We see many species of different reef fish on our Oahu snorkeling tours, and about 30% of the reef fish in Hawaii are endemic, meaning you wonʼt find them anywhere else in the world!

PRIVATE O'AHU TOURS

• up to 36 guests & snorkelers •.

Our two-hour private snorkeling excursions will take you to Waikikiʼs Turtle Canyons for a fun day of snorkeling with sea turtles. We will provide all of your equipment as well as a snorkel guide.

We had a great snorkeling trip. The guys at Living Ocean were great. We saw dolphins, plenty of turtles, tropical fish, held a sea urchin and even saw a small reef shark! Great experience for our family, won’t forget it! Thanks for making this a memorable trip for us!

Amazing experience topped off with a knowledgeable and courteous staff! I elected to do this for my honeymoon and we will certainly be back!

These guys really know what they are doing! Very friendly crew and informative. Was able to get us right above the reef and we got to swim with about 6 turtles. Snacks and water included. Highly recommended!

Super beautiful trip, saw dozens of turtles in the crystal clear waters. The crew was extremely kind, helpful, and accommodating. Will definitely take this trip again when we return!

The guys were so chill and welcoming. Chase was very friendly and prepared us for the turtles. We literally saw so many turtles, the hype is real! Very pleased with the tour & sightseeing!

There is no good snorkeling around Oahu. The aquarium like experience in Hanauma Bay has been gone for over a decade. Was there decades ago, went last year, trust me. What a complete waste of time.

The Hanauma Bay experience has definitely changed, I was there about a year ago as well. I remember going as a young kid and teenager, good memories. Early morning is best for water clarity and heading out past the break offered some excellent deeper water views. There is still lots of good snorkeling on Oahu but if you are going to compare it with Maui or the Big Island it will usually fall short. I just hiked Ka’ena point and the the west side, past Ko Olina was looking great although not recommended for the inexperienced.

Oahu Snorkel Tour Reviews

1. oahu morning snorkel sail along waikiki beach.

The green sea turtle or “Honu” as the locals call them are one of Hawaii’s most popular things to see. These beautiful turtles are unlike anything you have ever seen, personally I think they look like aliens.

If seeing the Honu is on your list of things to see in Oahu, (and it should be) then the Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise may be the best way to see them.

Once you board the 53 foot powered  ‘Honi Olani’ catamaran you will be taken to Turtle Canyon for your adventure. It’s a short 15 minute cruise where you can enjoy viewing Diamond Head, the Ko’olau Mountains and Waikiki from the ocean.

If your lucky you will see the “turtle cleaning station”, this is where the turtles line up to be cleaned by the fish. Turtles accumulate parasites on their shell and the fish eat them off the shell. Be sure to bring a waterproof camera for some awesome pictures!

It’s a win win, and something to see! This turtle canyon snorkeling tour is a guided so they will take you to the best spots and you won’t be left to fend for yourself.

Expand To See More See Less

You will have between 60 and 90 minutes with the turtles depending on how many people are on the cruise and how long it takes for everyone to get in the water.

When your done snorkeling, you can shower off and change into dry clothes for the cruise back.

The morning tour is 2 hours while the mid-day tour is 3 hours and includes snacks, unlimited beverages and two alcoholic drinks. If your lucky you will get to see spinner dolphins and if you happen to be on the cruise from Dec to April you may even get to see migrating whales.

If your looking to see Hawaii’s famous green sea turtle, this catamaran snorkeling oahu tour is your best bet.

More Information & Tour Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, other experiences you may enjoy:, 2. waikiki turtle canyons snorkel excursion.

Turtle Canyons is perhaps Hawaii’s most well-known and famous snorkeling spots and for good reason. It’s perhaps the best spot to see the “Honu” or sea turtles.

When you arrive you will be asked to watch a video about the bay. After which you will don your snorkel gear and start your snorkel adventure.

If you are a beginner snorkeler or not comfortable in the water, you don’t have to worry as your snorkeling guide is always close by.

There are schools of tropical fish that are used to people and will come right up to you. This is an ideal tour for complete beginners or young children as the inner reef is very shallow and calm.

If you are a more advanced snorkeler you can venture to the outer part of the reef in deeper water and even more variety of fish.

If you are really lucky like I was you may even see an octopus or eels, but you are guaranteed to see an incredible variety of fish. You may even get to see the resident spinner dolphins or migrating Humpback whales.

3. Oahu 3-Hour Dolphin Watching & Snorkel Excursion in Waianae

This all day cruise will have you swimming with spinner dolphins and the famous Hawaiian green sea turtles. This cruise is much more than a snorkel tour however.

There are 2 tours offered daily 7:00 or 10:30am, if you’re on the more active side, you can enjoy swimming with the dolphins. Seeing dolphins is guaranteed, if you don’t, the price of the tour is refunded.

Its pretty cool getting a close up of the dolphins, you can really appreciate their acrobatics up close. After your dolphin encounter, the captain will take you to your next part of the adventure to a location with plenty of colorful tropical fish and the green sea turtles.

Here you will put on your snorkel gear and get in the water to enjoy the scenery. It’s not guided so you can go where the fish and turtles are gathered. Or if you choose you can observe them while swimming. While you are enjoying your time in the water, the crew will grill up lunch.

4. Private Catamaran Cruise and Snorkeling Tour in Honolulu

This private 2 hour tour is a great option if you are looking for a great combination of snorkeling, and sightseeing along Waikiki beach without the crowds!

When you board the 41 foot catamaran you will then be taken along Oahu’s pristine eastern shore where you have a good chance of seeing dolphins and depending on the time of year, whales. If you’re lucky enough to spot them, the captain will stop the boat so you can observe them.

As you cruise to the snorkeling destination on the luxury catamaran with only your group, the captain and crew will give you the history of Oahu and legends of the Ko Olina.

When you arrive at the snorkeling destination the crew will give you a brief instruction in snorkeling if you have never snorkeled before.

Then you will put on your snorkel gear go swimming with the colorful tropical fish. Afterward you can shower and change into dry clothes. You will not want this tour to end!

5. Oahu North Shore Snorkeling Tour from Haleiwa

If your up for a little more adventure, the Kayak, Hike and Snorkel tour should be on your list of things to do. On this full day tour you will start with a leisurely hike through the beautiful Hakipuu Valley and the Koolau Mountain ridge.

This area is what you think of when picturing Hawaii, lush foliage and tall rugged mountains in the background. Once you arrive at your destination, Kaneohe Bay you will receive instructions and a brief safety talk on kayaking.

Then you launch your kayak (tandem and solo are available) into Kaneohe Bay which is a protected area, then paddle past Mokoli’i island to your snorkel destination.

This is a leisurely paddle for people of all abilities. While paddling, your guide will give you an information packed tour about the area where you are free to ask all the questions you want.

Here you have the option of snorkeling in the crystal clear waters and observe the tropical fish and coral reef or continue paddling around the area.

You will then enjoy a picnic lunch while enjoying the beautiful scenery then paddle back to where you started.

Your Guide For Hanauma Bay & Oahu Snorkeling Tours

Hawaii and Oahu in particular consist of coral reefs that go around the entire island. The coral reefs of Oahu have a variety of marine life that include; fish, dolphins, sharks and turtles. Most of the reefs in Oahu are less than 15 feet deep.

This makes for ideal snorkeling conditions, you will never be very far away from the marine life and coupled with the water visibility makes for the almost perfect conditions for the snorkeler.

The one thing that may people don’t realize about the waters around Hawaii is that the water is not that warm. Typically in the mid to high 70’s the warm will feel cold when entering. For this reason it is recommend to wear a thin wetsuit to keep you warm.

The high season for tourism in Oahu is spring and winter but this is not the best time for snorkeling. The summer is the best time, the water is warmer and calmer. Winter brings sea swells and they can be quite high. In fact the North Shore of Oahu is famous for its huge swells that are so popular with surfers.

Going in the summer brings some other advantages; namely better availability and cheaper prices. The snorkel tours also tend to be smaller giving you a more personal experience.

Oahu Snorkeling For Beginners

Snorkeling is something just about anyone can do whether or not you are in “shape”. You really don’t even need to know how to swim to enjoy snorkeling as you are really not swimming, but floating on the water and moving yourself through the water with your fins.

If you are not a swimmer, I would highly recommend a floatation vest, in fact I would recommend using one for anyone snorkeling. They keep you a little higher in the water and relieve any anxiety about sinking and drowning.

What makes Hawaii idea for snorkeling is water clarity. This is one of the most important factors to the enjoyment of your experience. If you can’t see, it doesn’t matter much what is swimming around you. Hawaii is renowned for its water clarity but also its scenery.

The coral reefs here are among the best in the world. Coral reefs attract marine life, including fish, eels, turtles and shellfish. The coral reef is an entire ecosystem unto itself. Being Hawaii is very isolated, and almost midway between California and Japan there is marine life found here that is completely unique to Hawaii.

Water depth will play a major role in the snorkeling experience. If you are in deep water, the marine life will be too far away to observe. The best conditions for snorkeling are where the visibility is at least 50 feet and in water between 4 and 25 feet.

Much deeper than 25 feet, the marine life will be too far away to be able to see clearly. The very best snorkeling experience will include the following:

  • Coral Reefs
  • Man-made shipwrecks
  • Rocky outcroppings close to shore
  • Offshore rocks and formations that reach above the water

Snorkeling Safely

How to Snorkel, Snorkeling Class for Beginners

Being a good swimmer is a relative term, just because you can swim several laps in a pool doesn’t necessarily make you a good swimmer. Swimming in the open ocean is a much different experience; the wind and waves make snorkeling here more demanding.

For this reason the best time to snorkel is the summer when the water is warmer and waves are smaller. Although even in the winter and spring there are protected snorkeling areas where the wind and waves are almost none existent.

For this reason going with a reputable snorkel tour operator that knows the best places to go is very important.

Also remember to stay within your limits. Never snorkel in water that you don’t feel comfortable in. Keep in mind the water is cool and after a period of time you could start to cramp up. So don’t stray too far from the boat or shore.

A great day of snorkeling should be relaxing and enjoyable. Since most of the marine life in Oahu is just under the surface, you can for the most part just float around without much swimming at all allowing you to see all the marine life without much effort.

Remember many of the places you will snorkel are protected areas. You should NEVER touch the coral or even worse break off a piece for a souvenir. Be respectful of the surroundings and follow the adage of “do no harm”.

FAQs About Oahu Snorkeling Tours

Where should i go snorkeling on oahu.

It’s hard to go wrong snorkeling on Oahu, but some of the better ones are Hanauma Bay, Turtle Canyon, Electric Beach and Kaena Point. These reefs have a wide variety of fish, colorful coral and crystal clear water. You may also see dolphins, whales and even small sharks.

What do I need to bring to go snorkeling?

Ideally you will have your own snorkel and mask for sanitary reasons, but almost all tour operators will provide them. Some tours also have fins, life jackets and or flotation vests. I highly recommend some type of flotation device, it will make your day much more enjoyable. You should also bring sunscreen, a towel, water and a change of clothes.

Do I need a guided tour to go snorkeling on Oahu?

No, you don’t have to have a guide but for the best experience and safety but I highly recommend a guided tour. You can snorkel on your own at some of the beach-accessible spots but most of the better locations require a boat to get to. A tour will take you to the best locations, pick you up, provide equipment and help you find and identify marine life. A guide will make sure you follow the rules of the snorkeling sites.

How much does a snorkeling tour cost?

The cost of a snorkeling tour on Oahu depends on how many people are on the tour, duration, the location and the season. Most snorkeling tours range from $100 to $150 per person but if you do a private tour expect to pay at least $200 apiece. You may also need to pay an entrance fee to some of the snorkeling sites like Hanauma Bay.

When is the best time to snorkel on Oahu?

You can go snorkeling on Oahu year-round but the summer months have calm and clear water, warm temperatures and more visibility. The winter usually has rougher water, cooler temps, and less visibility but on the upside you have a chance to see whales and dolphins.

Other Adventures

You will never be bored in Oahu. Its not called adventure island no reason! No matter what you like to do outside you will find it here.

If you would like a birdseye view of Oahu’s beauty while enjoying the rush of high speed, consider a ziplining adventure . As you zoom through the trees seeing the birds, flowers and other natural sights you can enjoy an adrenaline rush!

Before you head out on your snorkel tour, you may want to get a look from above. There is no better way to do that, than with a parasailing adventure .

While floating 500 feet up while pulled pulled behind a boat you can get a birdseye view of where you will be snorkeling. Check out the fish and coral from above and locate the best spots when you go into the water!

If you are into horseback riding, Oahu has some spectacular places for you to go. Whether it a romantic beach ride or through a rainforest, Oahu has it all!

25 Best Snorkeling Spots in Oahu, Hawaii (with Map)

Best Snorkeling Spots in Oahu

  • 6 Pinterest

Hawaiian green sea turtles, tropical fish, moray eels, and rainbow corals are just a hint of the impeccable underwater world thriving in the North Pacific Ocean surrounding Oahu island.

Among the many things to do in Oahu , snorkeling is one of the most loved activities by travelers — and it’s easy to see why.

Dotting its coastlines are powder white beaches, tall palm tree island scenes and some of the most crystal-clear waters around Hawaii. It’s here that healthy reefs flourish and diverse marine life calls the warm waters home.

Different parts of the island each have their own unique snorkel appeal. Choose the coast that most fascinates you among the pick of snorkeling spots in Oahu , grab your gear and get exploring.

Best snorkeling spots along Oahu North Coast

A famed surfing hot spot in Oahu, the North Coast (nicknamed North Shore) also boasts some of the most abundant marine life on the island thanks to its wild terrains. This means the snorkeling is fabulous, but take caution in winter when the big swells roll in.

1 – Kuilima Cove

Kuilima Cove, Oahu

Crystal-clear waters, an offshore reef and a calm ocean make Kuilima Cove a mega-popular snorkel spot, especially if you’re on vacay with younger children or have never tried snorkeling before.

The bay area is naturally protected by the land surrounding it, forming an ocean cove. Expect ample beach space made of soft sands and the ocean is super easy to access right from the shore.

Entering the water, be wary of the rocks close to the sand. However, this shallow area is home to schools of tropical fish to see while snorkeling.

Looking for a place to spot Hawaii’s beloved green sea turtles? Kuilima Cove is also known as Turtle Beach. Turtle Bay Resort is the hotel just behind the beach, hence its other local nickname.

Especially early on in the day, you can witness sea turtles, and they even wander up onto the beach. As it gets crowded here in the afternoons, arrive in the morning for the best experience.

2 – Sunset Beach Park

Sunset Beach Park, Oahu

Heading to Oahu’s North Shore? Sunset Beach Park is a name that’s well-known in Oahu, both for snorkeling opportunities and among the surf community.

Arriving at the beach you’ll be greeted by a typical tropical island scene, with long stretches of beach, palms swaying or tipping toward the ocean and a stunning open bay area for snorkeling.

The entry point is from the shore and you can begin the underwater fun right from here with loads of coral to spot. The waters get deeper relatively quickly the further out you swim, and there are sandbanks with drops close from the onshore. Also, take caution of the reef as you swim out.

Stay clear of snorkeling in winter as Sunset Beach Park is a renowned surf spot in Oahu, especially during this season when some big waves roll in.

  • North Shore day trips

3 – Shark’s Cove

Shark’s Cove, Oahu

A scattering of beach boulders and rocks creates snorkeling opportunities at Shark’s Cove right from the shoreline.

There isn’t the biggest beach area here, and the crowds come to play in the tidal pools, exploring rockery corners and crevices… Spot Mr. Crab, colorful fish, eels and more crustaceans swimming around the calm, undisturbed waters.

Most of the action happens in the main tidal pool, however, more to the right-hand side (where there is no rocky wall protection barrier), the waves don’t stay as flat, but the marine life gets better and better the further away from the rockeries you are.

As one of Oahu’s three Marine Life Conservation Districts, regardless of your positioning you’re bound to spot schools of fishies moving past you.

Best to keep this snorkel spot for summertime as winter sees harsher conditions and strong currents roll into the North Shore side. There are plentiful rocks both in and around Shark’s Cove, so wear aquatic shoes.

P.s. In case you were wondering about the name, there’s no need to fear. There aren’t any sharks in the bay, rather, it was nicknamed after its shape — which is said to resemble the outline of a shark.

4 – Three Tables

Three Tables, Oahu

Arriving at Three Tables to snorkel, put on your goggles and gear, and then straight from the shore, head to the three tabular reefs in front of the sands — which is what gives this snorkel spot its nickname.

It’s renowned for its abundant healthy corals, which means that, naturally, its reef teems with aquatic life. Many have been fortunate to spot green sea turtles and some even manta rays from the furthest reef.

Seemingly not as overcrowded as some other snorkeling destinations, the small stretch of beach sands provides enough space away from the water for relaxing or building sandcastles, and there are plenty of trees dotted around to provide shade.

Forming a part of the Pūpūkea Marine Life Conservation District, the waters in this part of Oahu are filled with native marine life, including some of Hawaii’s endangered species. Fishing in these parts is forbidden and thanks to this, its aquatic ecosystems thrive.

It’s suitable for beginner snorkelers, as well as families with young children, but there is no lifeguard on duty so be extra vigilant when there’s a strong swell, particularly in winter.

5 – Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay, Oahu

Easily waste away the hours at gorgeous Waimea Bay, famed for its transparent waters, massive beach and snorkeling opportunities.

Enter the water from the shore with no obstacles in your way and only soft sand banks underneath your feet. The waters here are so calm, some days the ocean really does look like a swimming pool!

A standout feature is ‘The Rock’, a giant ocean boulder that sits smack bang in the middle of the bay, stretching from the sand into the sea.

It’s not only popular for chilling on the rock with a bunch of mates, but rock jumping and climbing are popular activities. Plus, there are also tunnels under the rock which you can swim through with the fish.

But for the best snorkeling at Waimea Bay, check out the areas on the far ends on both sides of The Rock.

Exploring the crystal clear waters, uncover an abundance of sea turtles that live around here, as well as dozens of schools of fish and other marine species. Dolphins are also known to make an appearance now and then in front of Waimea Bay.

6 – Laniakea Beach

Laniakea Beach, Oahu

Is it a beach boulder or turtle?! Nicknamed “turtle beach” and for good reason, for an almost guaranteed chance to witness Hawaiian green sea turtles up close in the north, visit Laniakea Beach.

Parts of the beach have open bays and other bits are laden with rocks, creating natural coves for snorkeling (more to the right-hand side). Another location popular with families, there’s ample soft sand for chilling out, and tall palms lend a reprieve from the beating sunshine.

On a good day the ocean sparkles bright blue, boasting see-through waters… but when the conditions are a bit rougher, save the snorkeling for another spot as this messes with visibility.

Not only staying in the waters, but the turtles also walk up onto the shore — make sure you don’t mistake one of them for the rocks on the beach! On that note, be respectful of these creatures and keep your distance from them if spotting them beached.

7 – Puaʻena Point Beach Park

Puaʻena Point Beach Park, Oahu

Opt for the road less traveled and you might just find you’re a winner in the end. Usually decorated with beginner surfers, Puaʻena Point Beach Park is also a good snorkel pick in the summer thanks to its lagoon-like appearance.

At times, the water closest to the beach area is only ankle-deep, so it’s ideal for moms and dads with little kids who are super keen to look at the fish underwater. But do take care; there are some sandy patches to walk on once you’re in the water, but there are equal amounts of rocks to navigate around.

There are other parts of the North Coast where the ocean is a brighter shade of blue, but the waters aren’t overly busy at Puaʻena Point. This increases your chances of seeing more marine life while snorkeling undisturbed.

With that said, in winter the conditions change and there is some wave commotion that happens — this is when the surfing crowds arrive!

8 – Waialua Bay

Waialua Bay, Oahu

A square formation of rocks creates a massive tidal pool at Waialua Bay, lending itself as a great snorkel option.

Sheltered by these beach boulders, the shallow pool is ideal for beginner and leisure snorkeling enthusiasts, as well as children. There are also rocks inside the natural pool, so beware.

( Scuba diving off the coast of Wailua Bay is even more popular, and dive spots sit right in front of the bay where big marine life swim around these waters.)

For more snorkeling, head to Haleʻiwa Beach — a five-minute drive from Waialua Bay. Say hello to turtles at Haleʻiwa Aliʻi Beach Park which swim right up to the shore, and even onto the sands.

The best snorkeling happens closest to the onshore line, so your chances of swimming with turtles are high — but don’t forget to keep a distance. Be careful around the waters as the reef is not deep at all. Look out for sea urchins and avoid standing on the reef and its living ecosystems, including corals.

Another tip for scuba divers, Haleiwa Trench is located at Haleʻiwa Beach and can be accessed past the lifeguard towers. Apart from snorkeling and scuba, shark diving excursions start at the harbor at Haleʻiwa Beach… If you dare!

  • shark diving in Oahu

9 – Aweoweo Beach Park

Aweoweo Beach Park, Oahu

Boasting both tranquil waters and atmosphere, Aweoweo Beach Park is the perfect pick for travelers looking to escape the crowds and snorkel a more untouched part of the North Coast.

Out of the snorkeling spots in Oahu, this is another location that’s popular for turtle sightings. The reef starts close to the onshore and rocks covered in sea moss, seaweed and corals dot the ocean floor.

It’s around these that you can scope the sea turtles as well as the inhabitants of fish that live in between the rockeries.

Take note: the further from the beach you swim out, the deeper the water gets. Be aware of your surroundings if you’re not a strong swimmer or are snorkeling with little ones.

Take underwater photos in the transparent ocean, and enjoy a picnic on some of the softest white sands after your snorkeling fun.

Best snorkeling spots along Oahu West Coast

Escape the hustle and bustle of Oahu along the West Coast, more commonly referred to as the “Leeward Coast.” Pristine beaches, lagoon-like oceans and fewer crowds lend themselves as top factors for an epic snorkel time.

10 – Kaʻena Point State Park

Kaʻena Point State Park, Oahu

Make your way to the westernmost part of Oahu and discover Kaʻena Point State Park, engrossed in local history and with many folklore stories to tell.

It’s believed when souls leave the earth, they come to this tip of the island to do so. Apart from the tales, this beach park is loved for its snorkeling among the wild and rugged-looking terrains and underwater landscapes.

Leading to the main beaches pass by fields, sand dunes and even a cute seal or two. Once here, the beach space is massive and stretches around corners, it seems to never end.

There are beach boulders strewn all across the sands, in different shapes and sizes, and there are sandy patches in between. These rocks lend themselves to some shade.

Hunt down expanded sandy areas to the north side (Mokuleia), where there are fewer boulders, or head to the west end of the park to Keawa’ula to snorkel (famous for its sunsets as well).

Reaching both beaches requires a bit of walking along designated trails inside the park but the snorkeling is worth it.

11 – Mākua Beach

Mākua Beach, Oahu

It truly feels like you’re on a deserted tropical island somewhere, and with hardly anyone ever in sight, enjoy the snorkeling (and scenery) of Mākua Beach all to yourself.

Surrounded by Makua Valley and the Waianae Mountain Range, the golden sand beach boasts amazing snorkeling. It remains a secluded spot meaning that the reef in this part of Oahu gets to thrive as it’s left undisturbed.

Also known as Tunnels Beach, there are two main snorkeling spots around Mākua Beach. From a sandy entry point into the water, veer off slightly to the left or straight in front of you (called Ha’ena Point).

The reef that runs along the coastline closest to shore is great for spotting a plethora of fish species like arc-eye hawkfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, shoals, tang and many other types among its crystal-clear waters.

But beware of the sudden drops which can reach down a few meters deep — so, you will need to be somewhat of a good swimmer for this location.

If venturing further out into the lagoon area, expect to find the same, and Hawaiian monk seals are also known to pass snorkelers in these parts of Oahu. Also loved by local surfers, there are strong currents here that are not suitable for snorkel-time, so check prior.

12 – Mākaha Beach Park

Mākaha Beach Park, Oahu

It’s true; you can pretty much always check a fish or two whizzing through the waters and swimming in tidal pools on (most of) Oahu’s beaches, but Mākaha Beach Park is slightly different.

During snorkel expeditions you will be able to see a few fish here, however turtles and dolphins are the main attraction.

Enter the water from the soft sands directly in the middle of the beach. (Take note, on either side of the bay are rocky areas, and the reef is right up on the shore. Wear aquatic shoes if exploring these parts, and do not stand on the live reef.)

The further away from the shoreline you swim, the better your chances of spotting some serious marine life. This flat beach seems to stretch on for miles and is also a fabulous choice for a summer beach day.

Hunting down something extra special? Five minutes from Mākaha Beach Park, dolphin-watching tours start at Waianae Harbor. Enjoy a three-hour dolphin spotting expedition around these West Coast waters.

13 – Kahe Point Beach Park

Kahe Point Beach Park, Oahu

Get this… Electric Beach (officially Kahe Point Beach Park) gains its local nickname because of its positioning in front of a power plant. The warm waters that flow from the plant into the ocean lure in a whole bunch of different and interesting aquatic life.

This is one of the main reasons why the beach park attracts tons of (advanced) snorkelers and divers to the area. While the beach itself is not overly massive, it’s the snorkeling underwater that counts, and this is another hotspot for turtle sightings.

Travelers who have never tried snorkeling, save this option for the experienced. The south side of the beach is known as ‘Kahe Point’ and is your best bet for spotting marine creatures.

To reach this reef where the snorkel action happens, swim out (about one meter) from the shore. Also note, once here the reef suddenly drops with a known depth of up to 14 meters.

Skip the winter snorkeling at Electric Beach when powerful currents arrive — even if you are a pro.

14 – Ko’olina Lagoons

Ko’olina Lagoons, Oahu

Calling all families to the (man-made) Ko’olina Lagoons; comprising four lagoons, walk from one lagoon to the next along soft sands and jump into the pool-like snorkeling and swimming bays.

These water bays were built in a way to ensure natural water flows in and out of the lagoons from the ocean sitting directly in front.

Boasting ever-calm, flat waters, the half-circle coves are ideal for young children (including toddlers) and beginner snorkelers who want to try one of the island’s most popular activities.

During your underwater excursion, look out for schools of tropical fish or crustaceans nipping into the sandbeds. (As the Ko’olina Lagoons are man-made, there is unfortunately no coral.)

Arrive here early to avoid the crowds. The lagoons are not gigantic and when it becomes busy, the water isn’t as clear from all the movement, and loads of tourists splash around the bays.

Best snorkeling spots along South Oahu Coast

Home to tourist hubs like Waikiki (a beachy neighborhood in Honolulu), the south coast of Oahu is a travel hotspot. There’s a strew of beaches great for snorkeling, and thanks to their convenient location, are favored by those keen on snorkel time close to the accommodation.

15 – Turtle Canyon

Turtle Canyon, Oahu

You guessed it, Turtle Canyon is, indeed, named such for a reason and among all of the snorkeling spots in Oahu, this is one of the best (and most popular) places to swim with Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Unlike the rest, the famed snorkel location isn’t reachable from the beach. Instead, you will need to take a boat tour out to Turtle Canyon and the snorkeling starts here. Turtle snorkeling expeditions embark from Kahanamoku Beach in Waikiki and last around three hours.

Down to business; the snorkel spot is surrounded by shallow waters on the Ko Olina Coast, so snorkeling is suitable for all levels. Upon arriving, jump offboard at Turtle Canyon and snorkel up to the sea turtles.

While cruising on the ocean, keep an eye open for other aquatic animals like spinner dolphins, octopuses and whales (during whale season from December to April).

P.s. In case you were wondering, you cannot swim from Kahanamoku Beach to Turtle Canyon as it is only accessible via boat, but this tour is by far one of the best things to do in Honolulu !

16 – Waikiki Bay

Waikiki Bay, Oahu

There are many fun things to do in Waikiki , but one of the best activities is arguably snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles, and thanks to each beach’s close proximity, you can dedicate the day to beach-hopping filled with snorkeling.

Fun fact: Waikiki Beach consists of eight different stretches of ocean and sandy areas, and each one is named differently. This means, there are technically eight beaches, and some of them are great for snorkeling.

Queens Beach (known as Queen Kapiolani Beach or Kapiolani Park Beach) is a good spot for all levels — when the waters are calm. There is a lifeguard on duty at the beach too, so you can rest easy if here with kids.

Close to the shore witness reef fish, moray eels, barracuda, small octopus and Hawaii’s state fish known as humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa , or more simply, the reef triggerfish.

The second Waikiki beach great for snorkeling is Sans Souci Beach, smaller in size and crowds in comparison to Queen’s. It’s another spot in Oahu that looks like a swimming pool and is family-friendly.

Most of the immediate bay area in front of the beach is followed by soft sandbanks and this part is perfect for children. However, if you head further out to the reef, the best snorkeling is here and it begins to get rocky.

17 – Waiʻalae Beach Park

Waiʻalae Beach Park, Oahu

Heading just slightly outside of the Waikiki district, Wai’alae Beach Park has a unique setup where the mouth of the Wai’alae Stream meets the ocean and the water flows directly into the sea.

Dotted with tall palms, white sands and a flat, light azure-colored ocean, it’s picture-perfect.

A shallow reef sits in front of the sands and when the tides pull back, more of this is exposed. You can easily enter the bay from the shoreline, but be aware of the rocks jutting out around the reef. It’s advised to wear water shoes or snorkeling flippers here.

Located in the sea on one side of the beach is a man-made island. You can swim up to it, but you will need to first pass over the reef to do so. Once you do cross over the reef, the waters become instantly deeper and it’s around here you can scope sea turtles.

Wai’alae Beach Park is in front of the Kahala Hotel & Resort, which is a bonus as there is always plenty of parking space. It’s one of the South Shore’s more intimate settings. Not visited by many tourists, it’s an admired engagement shoot and wedding ceremony destination too.

18 – Maunalua Bay Beach Park

Maunalua Bay Beach Park, Oahu

Loved by all sorts of water sport enthusiasts, Maunalua Bay Beach Park is frequently visited by snorkelers thanks to its super placid waters.

This is a good choice if you’ve never snorkeled before as the ocean never seems to say hello to any waves. Wad into the North Pacific on a soft sandy floor directly from onshore and begin snorkeling.

There is a separate part of the bay where motorized water vehicles play and head out to sea. Submarine scooter tours also favor Maunalua Bay and take visitors below the surface in a unique oxygen suit.

Plus, around Maunalua Bay are some epic dive spots and wrecks! Located between Diamond Head and Koko Head on Hawaii Kai Drive, it’s often busy.

19 – Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay, Oahu

Hanauma Bay is a treat for all snorkelers, offering a multitude of different snorkel locations dotted along the bay — each one varying in difficulty.

Famous for its calm waves, shallow entry point, and vibrant aquamarine waters, it’s a dazzling locale for exploring colorful coral formations on a snorkel excursion. There is also the opportunity to spy sea turtles in their natural habitat, and snorkeling is easily accessible right in the bay (which you can swim into straight from the shore).

Along the curved-shaped bay, you’ll find access points of just sandbanks or other parts where rocks and reefs start from the shore, creating mini tidal pools in between.

Because there’s a variety of snorkeling sections dotted along this coastline, it’s a popular spot for beginners. Situated 20 minutes from Honolulu, the picturesque bay is an ideal location for a day trip filled with TLSea.

Forming a part of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, extreme efforts are made to protect the ecosystems around these parts, so you can expect a thriving marine world at Hanauma Bay.

Best snorkeling spots along Oahu East Coast

Heading away from the crowds again, journey to the Windward Coast, i.e. the Oahu East Coast. The island’s winds blow in from the eastern side and this part of Oahu is known for its lush landscapes, wildlife and oceans that look like postcards.

20 – Lanikai Beach Park

Lanikai Beach Park, Oahu

Soft powdery sands, low waters, small rock pools and easy access into the ocean from the shoreline make Lanikai Beach a fan favorite among traveling families.

Especially loved by younger children and beginner snorkelers, the reef is protected and so no massive swells hit the beach. Sometimes, however, the underwater isn’t the clearest when the beach is busy because of the fine white sand particles which interfere with visibility.

When coming to the surface of the water for a break, admire the famous Na Mokulua Islands straight up ahead.

The “Mokes”, as the two islands are affectionately called, also have some incredible snorkeling opportunities. To reach the isles you will need to boat across either by local transport or try kayaking here.

Kayaking to the islands can take between 45 minutes to two hours, depending on your fitness level and sea conditions. Along the journey, jump off your kayak with your snorkel gear on and look under the sea.

For keen snorkelers, visit both snorkel locations around Lanikai during a day trip to the Mokulua Islands and all transport, including boat transfers, is taken care of.

21 – Kailua Beach Park

Kailua Beach Park, Oahu

With sand so soft it just falls through your fingertips, Kailua Beach Park is another fine example of one of the Windward Coast’s exquisite beach settings… The color of the ocean here is extra magnificent.

Most of these beaches comprise powdery beach areas which extend to the ocean with few rocks and beach boulders. This means that fewer fish live in these parts as there is little place for them to feed, or hide.

But it does mean there are no obstacles or sharp reef tips standing in your way during your snorkel time, and getting into the ocean at Kailua Beach is a chilled endeavor. For these reasons, Kailua Beach Park is also popular with travelers just grasping the snorkel-concept, or those on vacation with the kids.

Like Lanikai Beach, you can also join a kayaking tour from Kailua Beach to the Na Mokulua Islands for more snorkeling adventures.

22 – Secret Beach

Secret Beach, Oahu

Famous as the backdrop to some of our biggest blockbuster movies like Jurassic Park and 50 First Dates, Kualoa Ranch is an adventure-inducing private outdoor park and the home of Secret Beach.

To access the snorkel spot you will have to first travel to Kualoa Ranch. Arriving, book a Secret Island beach adventure. It includes snorkeling as well as the chance to try out other water sports if you’re keen like swimming, canoeing and boat rides.

The easiest way to get to Secret Beach is through the private park but it guarantees a beach and ocean that are well-maintained and looked after. A healthy ecosystem equals great snorkeling.

23 – Heʻeia State Park

Heʻeia State Park, Oahu

This dedicated national park is encompassed by the Ko’olau Range mountains and is located within the massive Kāne’ohe Bay.

Head to Heʻeia State Park’s beachy waterfront, put on your snorkel gear and prepare for the breathtaking underwater scenery.

Protected by local authorities as well as communities, the ongoing effort is constantly put into preserving the ocean around here and its aquatic life. There are even educational programs run by volunteers on the beach — so get involved!

Wild and sizely rainbow corals line the reef beds and the area boasts a diverse marine world. Like most of the beaches on the East Coast, Heʻeia State Park sports smooth seas and strong currents are blown away.

Some other popular beaches that make up Kāne’ohe Bay include Ahu O Laka, Mokoliʻi Island and Sugar Mill Beach.

24 – Kaneohe Sandbar

Kaneohe Sandbar, Oahu

Speaking of, Ahu O Laka, more commonly known as Kaneohe Sandbar is also situated in Kāne’ohe Bay. If it appears familiar, you may have seen this hidden gem on Instagram feeds, and it’s easy to understand why.

Smack bang in the middle of the bay is a snow-white natural sandbar formed against the lagoon’s reef. You can actually chill on the natural sandbank and easily snorkel in the ocean around it.

Thanks to its makeup, the water around the sandbar is extremely shallow and so it’s suitable for all-level snorkel enthusiasts. During high tide, the water levels can rise waist-deep. To get to Ahu O Laka you need to kayak or catch a boat ride across.

As a highlight attraction, there are many boat tours to Kaneohe Sandbar which provide a convenient option for snorkeling here.

Spend a few hours or half the day exploring the pristine ocean and all the tropical fish, for example, flounders, that roam around here including some larger marine animals like turtles. The reef along the sandbar is pretty exceptional and many healthy corals thrive.

  • Kaneohe Bay tours

25 – Kualoa Regional Park

Kualoa Regional Park, Oahu

Directly in front of a large green grassy area with picnic tables and shady trees is the beach part of Kualoa Regional Park, known as Sugar Mill Beach.

A narrow sandy stretch continues down a strip and a calm ocean sits in front, also constituting part of Kāne’ohe Bay. The water visibility here is usually quite good and clear on most days, and a view of Mokoliʻi Island (nicknamed Chinaman’s Hat) greets you from the shoreline.

You’ll be welcomed by a shallow reef, but take precautions against sharp rocks along the water’s edge and between the reef. Venturing past here you can enjoy some more snorkeling and the occasional octopus backward swimming.

Electric Beach Blackspotted Puffer Fish

However, Electric Beach is not recommended for beginner snorkelers due to the strong waves and lack of lifeguards on duty. If you’re an experienced snorkeler seeking a unique underwater adventure, Electric Beach is definitely worth checking out, as is the nearby Ko'olina Lagoons for a more relaxed experience.

Snorkeling-Makaha-Beach

Makaha Beach Park is a prime snorkeling in Oahu spot on the West Coast, especially during the summer months when the waters are calm and clear.

By swimming out a little, you can explore the coral reefs and encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles and other marine life in their natural environment.  The beach itself is perfect for relaxing after a snorkeling session, with picnic tables and facilities available for your convenience.

Keep in mind that the best time to visit Makaha Beach Park for snorkeling is during the summer months, as the water is calmer and there are fewer people around.  Enjoy the tranquil waters and vibrant marine life as you explore this serene snorkeling spot on Oahu’s West Coast.

Snorkeling In Oahu Fish

To ensure a fun and safe snorkeling experience in Oahu’s waters, it’s essential to be mindful of safety tips and gear recommendations.

First and foremost, always snorkel with a buddy, as this not only makes the experience more enjoyable, but also ensures you have someone to rely on in case of an emergency. Be aware of your surroundings, checking for coral, rocks, waves, and sea urchins, and avoid venturing into high surf unless you are an experienced snorkeler.

When selecting snorkeling gear, be sure to choose equipment that is suitable for your skill level and preferences. Opt for a traditional mask, snorkel, and fins, and avoid using full-face masks as they can pose safety risks.  Don’t forget to wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the environment, as certain chemicals found in conventional sunscreens can harm coral reefs.

Snorkeling Masks & Fins

Selecting the right snorkeling gear is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable experience in Oahu’s waters. The basic gear includes a mask, snorkel, and fins, with various options available to suit your skill level and preferences.  For example, the Cressi Palau Short Fin Set and the Scubapro Escape Semi-Dry are popular choices for beginners, providing a balance of comfort and performance.

When choosing a mask, it’s important to avoid full-face masks, as they can pose safety risks and are not recommended for snorkeling. Instead, opt for a traditional mask and snorkel combination that fits comfortably and securely on your face, ensuring a clear view of the mesmerizing underwater world of Oahu.

Oahu Snorkeling Safety

Staying safe in the water is just as important as choosing the right snorkeling gear. Before entering the ocean, familiarize yourself with the lifeguard flags, which indicate water conditions and potential hazards: red flags signify dangerous conditions, yellow flags indicate choppy waters not recommended for swimming, and green flags signal safe conditions for swimming and snorkeling.

Be aware of your personal limits and take regular breaks to prevent exhaustion, ensuring a safe and enjoyable snorkeling experience.

Lastly, follow the Leave No Trace principles to protect Oahu’s unique marine ecosystems. This includes planning ahead, disposing of waste properly, leaving what you find undisturbed, minimizing campfire impacts, respecting wildlife, and being courteous to other visitors.  By adhering to these guidelines, you can enjoy Oahu’s underwater wonders while preserving them for future generations to experience.

From the vibrant North Shore to the serene West Coast and the family-friendly South Oahu Coast, Oahu offers a diverse range of snorkeling spots for everyone to enjoy.  Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler seeking new adventures or a beginner eager to explore the captivating underwater world, the island’s pristine waters, abundant marine life, and stunning coral reefs await you.

Remember to choose the right snorkeling gear, follow safety tips, and adhere to Leave No Trace principles to ensure a fun and memorable experience while preserving Oahu’s unique marine ecosystems.

So, what are you waiting for? Dive into the enchanting underwater realm of Oahu and discover the breathtaking beauty that lies just below the surface. Your snorkeling adventure in paradise awaits!

Locals flock to Hanauma Bay, Three Tables and Electric Beach for snorkeling in Oahu. Hanauma Bay is a Marine Life Conservation District with an incredible array of aquatic life.  Three Tables is a less crowded protect cove on the North Shore.  Electric Beach benefits from the warm water discharge of an electric plant that attracts many species of fish.

Hanauma Bay, formed within a volcanic cone and home to a pristine marine ecosystem, is the famous bay in Oahu for snorkeling. With a history of thousands of years of Native Hawaiians enjoying life on the bay and a restoration plan implemented in 1990, visitors come from all over to experience its beauty.

The bay is a protected marine life conservation area and educational center, and is home to over 450 species of fish and other marine life. It is also a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Visitors can take pictures.

Visitors can rent snorkeling gear onsite, and the bay is also home to a variety of educational programs and activities. The preserve is open from 6am to 6pm, and advance reservations are required.

With lifeguards present on many beaches in Oahu, it’s best to check with them before snorkeling. You can also find information online about the water conditions in the area if there are no lifeguards around. Overall, it is safe to snorkel on Oahu if you take necessary precautions.

For the best snorkeling experience on Oahu’s North Shore, head to Shark’s Cove, Three Tables, or Waimea Bay.

Once you arrive at the site, you might see turtles at the surface. When you join them in the water, you will see how healthy their population is. Spotting over twenty sea turtles in a single trip is considered a regular day. The reason for their presence is that the reef is considered their cleaning station. In case you don’t have the whole day to spend outdoors or maybe the North Shore is too far for you, you can still experience a combo bus and snorkel tour at a nearby site – Hanauma Bay. Only 30 minutes from Honolulu, you will board a bus and travel towards the southern coast of Oahu.

Declared as a marine life conservation area and underwater park, Hanauma Bay is an old volcanic crater filled with marine life like tangs and triggerfish. On top of this, you will enjoy the snorkeling conditions in Hanauma Bay as it is generally calm and free from strong winds and waves.

Duration: 3 hours

Fast boats and roaring engines are the fad with most tour operators in Oahu. But how about having a slow and quiet cruise on the leeward coast of Oahu and go snorkeling in spectacular underwater reefs.

From Honolulu, you will set sail to the west coast with the gentle Pacific breeze powering up your trip. As you sail, you will enjoy the vast Hawaiian ocean scenery with dolphins breaching nearby. Once you reach the designated snorkeling site, you will drop anchor. After a short briefing, you will go in the water following a professional snorkel guide. While the reef is laden with tropical fish, your sights will definitely be focused on sea turtles as they gently flip their wings and gracefully swim above corals. On your sail back, there’s nothing better than having a sip of your favorite drink as this tour comes with a complimentary alcoholic drink (for adults only; juice and soda for the kids).

Unlike volcanoes, sandbars are not really synonymous when we speak of Hawaii. However, you can still visit one, particular off the coast of Kaneohe.

Leaving port in Kaneohe, you will go on a 1-mile cruise and arrive at a 3-mile long sandbar. When you arrive, you will be greeted by a vast expanse of white powdery sand and walking barefoot on it is very hard to resist. After a short walking tour, your guide will prepare your group for a snorkeling adventure and led you to a shallow reef where sea turtles awaits your presence.

best snorkel tours oahu

Snorkeling can be more fun if other watersports are combined. In the case of this tour, ocean kayaking and SUP are added as a regular feature. Cruising from Honolulu, you will anchor at a reef and once the Captain announces “let the fun begin”, choose whether you go snorkeling, kayaking or SUP .

Once you get back on the boat, other activities will keep you going like the iconic onboard ocean slide, dolphin watching or learn how to “hula” – a popular Polynesian dance that uses the rhythmic coordination of the hips and hands. Don’t worry, you can easily learn the dance after a few drinks that is available at the bar upon purchase.

Duration: 1.5 hours

If you are hesitant to go in the water and see what’s hidden beneath as you don’t know how to swim and snorkel, don’t worry as you can learn both while having a great Hawaiian vacation.

At the beach, you will start by having a short lecture about the basics of snorkeling. After, you will go to a shallow sandy flat at waist deep for you to be adjusted and be comfortable on water. After getting used to, your guide will lead you to the reef where your snorkeling lessons will also be filled with fish encounters as damselfish will present themselves to you for a quick play. You will even have your own underwater video that you can later share to your family and friends.

best snorkel tours oahu

Snorkeling in Oahu is already a great experience. But how about we add it with a dash of underwater exploration and adventure by using a submarine scooter.

After passing Diamond Head Crater via Maunalua Bay, your catamaran boat will anchor and your snorkeling adventures will start as the crew sets up the submarine scooter. After a quick rest back onboard, you will be guided to your own submarine scooter. Once seated and ready, you will go on an epic 20 minute dive underwater while getting close to the reef and surrounded with lots of tropical fish.

Know Before You Go Snorkel Safety

Swimming and snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean should not be taken lightly. To keep you safe, please know your health limits, swim with a buddy, never turn your back on the ocean, and read and obey posted signs. Check HIOceanSafety.com for ocean conditions at lifeguard beaches.

1. Electric Beach Snorkeling (West Oahu)

Our #1 spot is also our most dangerous. This snorkel spot is for moderate to advanced snorkelers and a snorkel buddy is a must. With that said, the snorkeling here is amazing.

Fish congregate at the warm water pipe outlet of the local electric plant. The artificial reef created by the warm water has hundreds of fish swimming around the snorkelers. Here is how to get out to the pipe outlet.

things to do oahu best snorkeling

Electric Beach is located in West Oahu, on the way out to Waianae, just past Ko Olina Resorts. Park at Kahe Point Beach Park. Warning, car break-ins are common here so don’t leave anything in your car.

Behind the pavilion is a small beach. Enter here but check ocean conditions. Strong currents and waves are common at this beach and there are no lifeguards on duty. If the conditions don’t look good, don’t enter the water. If in doubt, don’t go out.

The pipe enters the ocean at the beach. Follow the pipe from shore to get to the outlet. The swim is about 100 yards out from shore. See the graphic below for Electric Beach.

Once you are out there snorkeling with your buddy, you can hang at the surface to see all the fish or dive down 15 to 20 feet to be close to the pipe outlet.

Electric Beach Snorkeling Amenities:

  • No lifeguard on duty
  • Large parking lot
  • Sandy beach access
  • Restroom and shower facilities

Another way to access this snorkeling area of Waianae is with a snorkel tour on a catamaran . Our favorite Oahu snorkeling tour leaves Ko Olina Marina. If you’re staying in Waikiki (transportation is available) or Ko Olina, then head out on a snorkel tour.

2. Hanauma Bay: Oahu’s Famous Snorkel Spot

Hanauma Bay gets a bad rap due to the reservation system and the crowds. But, we can’t help but make this our #2 snorkel spot on Oahu due to the ease of snorkeling and the large, abundant, and colorful marine life here.

best snorkel spots oahu hawaii hanauma bay

Located 25-minutes east of Waikiki, plan to spend the day here snorkeling and playing on the beach. The beach is one of the best on Oahu !

With lifeguards on duty, snorkel rental available at the beach, and a large reef to protect the kids from the waves, you can play all day here under the sun. Hanauma Bay is a great place to teach the kids how to snorkel as there is no shore break, the water is shallow, and the fish are curious. See our 22 other things to do on Oahu with kids .

With no fishing in the bay, the fish are large and not scared of the snorkelers.

Hanauma Bay Snorkeling Amenities:

  • Lifeguards on duty
  • Snorkel rental at the beach
  • Snack shop available at the visitor center

3. Shark’s Cove Snorkeling During the Summer

Shark’s Cove is a gem on Oahu’s North Shore. From May to September, the waves settle down for some epic snorkeling in the lava rock-protected cove.

Pupukea Beach Park has a large cove that is about 5 to 10 feet deep. Fish enter the cove and have a hard time getting out. That is good news for beginner snorkelers. Enter from the sandy beach, there are some rocks but mostly sand, to snorkel around the cove.

best snorkel spots oahu sharks cove

Shark’s Cove Snorkeling Amenities:

  • No lifeguards on duty
  • Restrooms and showers
  • Picnic tables
  • Snorkel rental shop across the street
  • Food trucks across the street

We like Shark’s Cove for the clear water and the protected lagoon. Make sure the conditions are good for snorkeling before you go out by checking lifeguard flags and conditions. Rescues here are frequent during the winter and early spring but lifeguards come when responding to 911 calls. See other snorkel beaches for lifeguards on duty.

Grab our favorite reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreens before you head into the water.

Check snorkel conditions near Pupukea Beach Park .

Google Directions: Shark’s Cove at Pupukea Beach Park, Oahu

Bonus Oahu Snorkel Spot: Three Tables

At Pupukea Beach Park and just south of Shark’s Cove is Three Tables. Named for three table-like coral formations just offshore, Three Tables is another good spot for snorkeling during calm conditions.

As Three Tables and Shark’s Cove is part of the Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District (no fishing from shore), the fish populations are large. For where to snorkel, float over the three tables for the best snorkeling. They are easily spotted at low tide, only about 25 yards from shore.

Want to snorkel with sea turtles and see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins? Our favorite snorkel tour on Oahu leaves out of Ko Olina Marina. Learn more here .

Shark’s Cove is one of seven of our favorite things to do on Oahu . If you’re going to drive to North Shore Oahu, see our list to keep you busy.

4. Kuilima Cove Snorkeling at the Legendary Turtle Bay Resort

All beaches in Hawaii are public so this best of the best snorkel spot on Oahu is available for all. Kuilima Cove is a large cove next to Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s North Shore. The large reef and rocks keep the water clarity excellent even when there are large North Shore waves.

With a large beach and protected lava-rock walls, the cove is an excellent place for snorkeling. Water depth is 5 to 15 feet deep. You will find a coral reef and rocks to explore for fish and sea turtles.

Kuilima Cove best snorkeling on oahu's north shore

Kuilima Cove is a great place to find Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles eating seaweed (limu in Hawaiian) from the rocks and reef. Stay a respectful 10 feet away and never touch the endangered animal as it is illegal.

Caution, stay away from the lifeguard buoys as they mark the channel out of the cove. You will find strong currents that might suck you out to sea so stay clear of the buoys.

Kuilima Cove Snorkeling Amenities:

  • Restroom and showers are available
  • Food is available at Turtle Bay Resort or Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi
  • Public parking is limited but available in the Turtle Bay Resort parking lot

Online snorkeling conditions are not available for Kuilima Cove. Check flags at the beach!

5. Queens Beach in Waikiki

We can’t have the best snorkeling spots on Oahu without including one location in Waikiki. Waikiki is the most visited and famous place to stay in all of Oahu. While Waikiki Beach is best known for surfing ( see our favorite surf school here ), there is one snorkel spot worth visiting.

Queens Beach is located on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki, near Kapiolani Regional Park. Being on the far side of Waikiki Beach, you will find fewer beachgoers over here.

The best snorkeling is located near the beach wall or jetty. Walk from the sandy beach and swim along the jetty. The best snorkeling is located about 25 yards past the jetty.

  • Restrooms and showers available
  • Food nearby in Waikiki

Safety at the Best Snorkeling Spots on Oahu

We want you to have a safe vacation in Oahu, Hawaii. Snorkeling is the number one cause of death for visitors to Hawaii.

Be it your first-time to Hawaii or your eleventh, a snorkeling refresher is always a smart idea. We always recommend snorkeling visitors read up on snorkel safety tips for Hawaii .

The City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety Division have excellent lifeguards located at 29 beaches on Oahu. While having a lifeguard on duty is comforting, it is up to you to understand the lifeguard flags and know your limits before you venture into the mighty Pacific Ocean.

Here are a few Oahu snorkel safety tips for beginners:

  • Always snorkel with a buddy
  • Go snorkeling in the morning for the best visibility and usually better ocean conditions
  • Prepare your equipment – wear quality, well-fitting equipment and apply anti-fog to your mask before you enter the water
  • Always be aware of ocean activity – never turn your back on the ocean and understand the currents where you’re snorkeling
  • Relax and focus on floating – use a flotation device and float to conserve energy. Kick to move around but heavy kicking isn’t necessary.

Wait a few days after you land on Oahu

There is a common misconception that snorkel drownings and near misses are caused by inexperience on the part of the swimmer. A three-year study by the Hawaii Department of Health found that tourist snorkeling deaths are largely the result of low oxygen levels in body tissues prompted by excess fluid buildup in the lungs.

The condition is known as hypoxia induced by rapid onset pulmonary edema, or ROPE.

Long-distance air travel may be the cause of hypoxia, leading to a disproportionate number of visitor snorkel drownings. The act of breathing through a snorkel may trigger a respiratory impairment. The victim doesn’t inhale water but the respiratory system shuts down.

Wait a few days after you land on Oahu before you drive to one of these snorkeling spots.

When in doubt, don’t go out!

Hawaii Snorkel Guide Video

Erica and I love to go snorkeling when we travel to the Hawaiian Islands. Watch our Hawaii snorkeling guide video for more tips on snorkeling in Hawaii.

The biggest question we get asked is where to rent or buy snorkel equipment. We cover that in the video below!

Shark Safety When Snorkeling

If sharks are scaring you away from snorkeling on Oahu, keep this in mind: Hawaii has more than 9 million visitors each year. The odds are in your favor that you’ll be able to swim and snorkel safely in Hawaii.

If you want to do your best to snorkel safely and reduce your chances of meeting a shark while out enjoying the water, see these shark safety guidelines.

  • Don’t go off alone. Swim and snorkel with other people.
  • Avoid murky water, harbor entrances, stream mouths, channels, or steep dropoffs. Sharks like to hang out in places like this.
  • Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk.
  • Don’t enter the water if you’re bleeding — even a little bit. They can detect the smallest amount of blood and will come to investigate.
  • Don’t wear high-contrast clothing or jewelry. This will get their attention and draw them in.
  • Don’t splash excessively. The splashing could attract sharks.
  • Don’t go in the water if a shark has been spotted (obviously).
  • If fish or turtles begin acting erratically, it’s best to leave the water. They might feel the presence of a shark nearby.
  • Be cautious if there are dolphins present — some larger sharks view them as food.
  • Don’t swim near people who are fishing. Why swim near shark bait?
  • When in doubt, stick to beaches with lifeguards and follow their instructions.

We were looking for an adventurous excursion while visiting Oahu, and stumbled upon the half day kayak tour to the Kaneohe Sandbar with Active Oahu Tours. When we arrived at the shop, Michael was great. He's knowledgeable about the area, helped us load up the kayak, gave us everything we needed for our adventure (kayak, oars, snorkel gear, and life jackets), and then gave us all the info on the paddle out to the Sandbar. He even showed us the satellite images our phones with the map and everything. It was a tough paddle out with the rain and windy conditions that day, but we had a blast! Once we got out to the Sandbar, we saw tons of turtles and an eel. It was mid-tide around 10am-ish, so the water was up to my mid thigh (I'm 5'0 for reference). We had so much fun on our kayak adventure and swimming around the Sandbar. Definitely an awesome memory from this year's visit to Oahu.

The best possible beach rental shop conveniently located near lanikai beach!! they have everything in a convenient package: snorkel set, 2 beach umbrellas, 2 beach chairs, dry bag, and a hefty wagon to carry everything-- for a very fair price. We added on a icebox, which was perfect for our lazy boozy beach day @lanikai. (someone tell me if their tacos are good)

These folks came through for us on short notice when our pre-arranged rental crapped out! They were easy going and friendly. Would highly recommend, and will use again.

My boyfriend and I had an absolutely incredible experience with Active Oahu Tours, and we can't thank Mark enough for making it all the more memorable! From the moment I started the online reservation process, Mark guided me every step of the way, ensuring a seamless and stress-free booking experience. But it didn't stop there - Mark's expertise truly shone when he walked us through the ins and outs of kayaking, especially out on the vast ocean. His thorough instructions gave us the confidence to navigate the waters safely and securely. Plus, he went above and beyond by helping us securely fasten the kayak to our car, ensuring our journey was worry-free. And to top it all off, Mark's thoughtfulness extended to providing us with refreshing soft drinks for our road trip adventure. What a delightful surprise! We also took Mark's advice and headed to Haleiwa Joe's, where we followed his recommendation to arrive well before they opened. This insider tip led us to savoring the incredible prime rib, and it was nothing short of amazing. Mark, you truly are the best, and your exceptional service and local insights made our day unforgettable. Thank you for going the extra mile to make our Active Oahu Tours experience extraordinary! We can't wait to come back for more adventures and delicious meals based on your recommendations. Aloha!

The owner was incredibly kind, even waiting for us to drop off our equipment past the closing time. His prices are the best in the area. We had such a great experience. You could tell that the owner was very passionate and really cared about the experience of his customers.

Photo of Tekoa N.

Michael (the owner) was pleasant and communicative. He has very reasonable prices for rentals. He was very friendly, helpful, and kind. We had a tiny car and the kayak posed no problem for us. He took the time to help us load it on the roof of the car and showed us how to use everything. Definitely recommend!

Photo of Jenni O.

Wonderful experience!! It well exceeded my expectations. When we arrived they were ready for us with the kayaks out on the grass. They provided us with a laminated map of a recommended route to kayak to the island. The map also had good information on it about the island. This was a bonus in my opinion because it was not something I expected to get. At the end of the trip, we returned the kayaks and map with ease. They were waiting for us. I will DEFINITELY book with them again. Thank you so much!!!

Aloha Jenni, thanks for your review! I’m glad it all worked out for your group and that you enjoyed the map :)

Booked under the impression that they would deliver the kayaks to the destination as they advertise on their website. Once I finished paying and received the confirmation email I got a text from Brad saying they would NOT be able to deliver the kayaks and that we'd need to pick it up 30 mins away. I expressed my concern as that's not what was agreed upon when booking and received no reply. After no response I replied again requesting to cancel the reservation, within minutes I got an email saying it was cancelled but still no reply. Being that it's a 3 hour rental and is now requiring an hour drive taking away from the total rental time as well as requiring 4 vehicles for the group to transport the kayaks we could not do it. By the looks of other reviews they were able to deliver kayaks 19 days ago. Our group was planning this occasion for weeks in celebration of a birthday and we're disappointed in how it was all handled.

Photo of Breanne K.

Awesome folks & beautiful view! We've been tandem kayaking before, but not in a couple years, so the guys were able to go over everything easily and very nicely! We had also hit traffic due to an accident on H3 that morning, which delayed us enough to miss about 30 minutes of our reservation, but they reached out to us vis text and we were able to relay what was going on efficiently. We never explicitly asked if we could be comped the time, because none of our misfortune was their fault, but we were more than able to paddle out to the island, swim around, climb, and paddle back well with even less than 3 full hours! To end the excursion, we were offered some chilled Aloha-Maids and some friendly banter. Whether you're a tourist, kanaka, or somewhere in between, I definitely recommend these guys for your next rental, they are very accommodating, kind, and affordable! We booked for a last minute excursion the night before we went, and we still had great service and a great time!

Thanks Breanne! I’m glad it all worked out with your group, I really appreciate your review and enjoyed helping you all out with your kayak adventure. Come visit us next time you’re around, we will have some fun new kayaking routes soon! -Michael

This was such a cool paddling and hiking experience! We didn't do a tour but we did rent kayaks. Booking online is easy. PRO TIP #1: make sure to indicate if you want life vests in the Comments portion of your online booking form! Signing the liability waiver was also online. Easy and convenient! Our delivery guy Brad texted us the day of with instructions for pickup. Super convenient. We did Chinaman's Hat, so he brought our kayaks to Kualoa Beach Park. He parked on the side of the road and set up the kayaks on the grass for us. My partner and I launched our kayak from the beach area just in front of the truck. Then we paddled to Chinaman's Hat, which took us less than 30 minutes. The Chinaman's Hat hike was steep and lots of dirt and rocks. PRO TIP #2: wear tabis! There are lots of rocks on shore and going up the mountain! The view at the top of the mountain if you choose to go was perfect! You can see the shoreline perfectly. Then drop off was easy. The delivery guy waited until we brought the kayaks back which was convenient since we wanted to leave before our reservation ended at 4:00pm. Mahalo Active Tours O'ahu! We'll definitely rent with you folks again soon!
