Family Vacations With College Kids and 20-Somethings

From Montreal to Granada, Wonderful, Adventure Packed-Destinations for Families

Teens and 20-somethings are adventuresome travel companions, who enjoy a mix of outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, fine dining, and cool shopping. Continue reading for tips on structuring the perfect family vacation when everyone's grown up, then check out this sampling of great vacation destinations for families with young adults.

Montreal, Canada

Perry Mastrovito / The Image Bank / Getty Images

The combination of European feel, museums, boutiques and club scene made Montreal a top pick among teens and 20-somethings, as well as their parents. Old Montreal bustles with museums, boutiques, fine dining and café culture.

Street performers, jugglers, and musicians fill the former marketplace of Place Jacques-Cartier. And Mount Royal rises above the center of the city, offering beautiful parks, hiking trails, and horseback riding. A 23-year-old intern at TravelMuse.com sold us on the idea after she called it her favorite all-around city. This gorgeous 2-minute video sealed the deal. We're booking our tickets now for the  summer . Winter is icy.

San Diego, California

San Diego 's beautiful beaches—so alluring for surfers, sunbathers, divers, and kayakers—are an outdoorsy counterpoint to the city's fabulous museums, world-famous zoo, and the clubs and cafes of its Gaslamp Quarter, where 20-somethings will want to hang after mom and dad go to bed.

Nearby La Jolla boasts swanky boutiques and posh shops, and Coronado Island lends a retro vibe and powdery soft beaches to your must-see list.

Other places to see include coastal towns nearby like Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Del Mar, home of the famous race track. The Del Mar Racetrack season runs from mid-July through early September. There's also the very popular Del Mar Fair.

New Orleans

Bruce Soileau / Stock.Xchng Photos

New Orleans' French Quarter provides jazzy nightlife and outrageously wonderful dining possibilities, but teens and 20-somethings may also be very interested in the ample opportunities for voluntourism. Among the groups working here: Hands on New Orleans and Habitat for Humanity .

Other great things to do in New Orleans and the surrounding area include bayou tours, architectural tours, and museums.

Dublin, Ireland

Gian / Stock.Xchng Photos

Europe offers so many exciting destinations, but Dublin has a particularly cool vibe, says TravelMuse 's Donna Airoldi, that combines "outdoorsy days and then at night, live music, restaurants, and clubs."

In addition to the historical attractions and hiking possibilities, Dublin's Temple Bar area, the narrow, cobblestoned streets near Christ Church Cathedral, is home to bohemian shops, a thriving arts scene, and plenty of late night clubbing. In short, there's plenty to do here for teens, as well as enough nightlife to satisfy the 20-something crowd.

If your family enjoys hitting the links, there are plenty of gorgeous golf courses in Ireland for you to try out. Going outside of the city to see the countryside is a day trip that's worth the time, as the Irish countryside is unique and beautiful.

Granada, Nicaragua

Costa Rica is an undeniably popular vacation destination, but Airoldi calls neighboring Nicaragua , with its Pacific and Caribbean coasts, an undiscovered jewel.

It's not "uber-developed," she says, so prices are still low, but it's only a matter of time before the rest of the world discovers the Central American country's beach towns, towering volcanoes, lush jungles, and great cities. They include Granada, a colonial-era jewel on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world.

There are ample opportunities to explore, she says, everything from coffee farm tours to petroglyphs, jungle hikes, and other adventures that will keep teens and 20-somethings enthralled.

If you haven't yet heard about glamping, check into it for a fun and adventurous vacation with your family. Head to Montana, California, upstate New York or lots of other places across the country to try out camping for those who prefer running water and a mattress to sleep on. Horseback riding, hiking , gourmet meals, and more are part of the glamping experience.

More Suggestions

New York City, Seattle, Portland, and Austin are all great cities for families traveling with older teens and 20-somethings . Got skiers? Vail or Aspen, with their lounge and restaurant scenes and celebrity factor, are always popular too.

Top 10 travel experiences for young adults

A group of travellers sitting on a sand dune in the middle of the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

These experiences will turn into some of your favourite memories; you simply haven’t made them yet.

So, you’re fresh out of high school and itching to take that gap year you’ve been dreaming about? Or maybe you’ve just graduated from university but don’t want to start full-time work yet? Are you in that mid-20s rut where your life’s become a seemingly endless cycle of sleep, work, eat and repeat with no change of scenery in sight? If you answered yes to any of the above, these top 10 travel experiences might just come in handy.

I know most of us haven’t thought about geography since we studied it in year 9, but the world is so big (duh), and it’s full of captivating countries with fascinating local cultures waiting to be explored by young travellers just like you.

From the golden, sandy dunes in the Sahara Desert to the teeming hawker halls of Singapore , these experiences are guaranteed to heighten your senses and fire up your curiosity.

1.     Spend time at one of Albania’s best beaches

The azure waters and rocky cliff faces off the coast of Albania.

Forget the pebbled beaches of Positano or the azure waters of the Greek islands; Albania’s Dhermi beach is where it’s at. Boasting sparkling waters perfect for swimming in, golden sand you can lay out on (for that all-important Mediterranean glow) and a range of activities to try out, Dhermi Beach is one stunning stretch of this country’s gorgeous coastline.

But the fun doesn’t stop once you’ve had your beachside-fill. Explore this local hotspot further by hitting up one of the nearby bars with your group and spend a night enjoying great food (did someone say Fërgesë?) with even better company.

2.     Camp in Iceland

A group of travellers in brightly coloured jackets holding pick axes on a geyser in Iceland.

Iceland has to be one of the coolest places on earth (literally), but sometimes marvelling at erupting geysers and walking through icy glaciers just isn’t enough to get the whole Nordic experience. This is where camping comes in.

Straight away, I know what you’re thinking. How does camping in -2°C temperatures sound even remotely fun? And while I agree the weather can get a bit frosty (pack your thermals), camping allows you to discover remote destinations most travellers to this European country can only dream of – think enjoying a fire-pit cooked dinner in Thorsmork Valley and relaxing in steamy hot springs before setting up camp in Hvollsvollur.

3.     Journey through vibrant Morocco

A couple of travellers taking photographs of a traditional dye factory in Morocco.

There are no words to describe just how special and unique Morocco is, but once you journey through Fes’ labyrinth-like medina, take a load off in the coastal town of Essaouira, or trek through the spectacular Atlas Mountains, you’ll understand precisely why this colourful country is one for the bucket list.

From extraordinary experiences such as exploring the Sahara Desert on a camel ride through the dunes to discovering traditional snacks on a leader-led walk through the souks of Marrakech, you’ll never run out of things to do or places to stare in wonder at.

Boasting a photo op around every corner, friendly locals who are more than happy to share their culture and cities that are buzzing with a beautiful chaos you’ll want to get swept up in, Morocco will not only scratch your travelling itch but leave you in awe.

4.     Stay in a coffee estancia in Colombia

A local farmer holding a barrel full of Colombian coffee beans.

Coffee beans go on a very long, complex journey before they become part of your daily morning routine. From their beginning as cherry-like fruit to the roasting and grinding process, you’re probably more familiar with, these beans have seen it all. Especially the ones from Colombia.

Known as one of the major coffee-producing countries in the world, Colombia exports a whopping 11.5 million bags per year so it only makes sense that to deep dive into this country’s culture, you need to follow the brown-bricked road straight into the heart of the Cocora Valley.

On our Real Colombia adventure, you can go behind the scenes of the beans and stay at an old-school coffee estancia (coffee station). Spend hours learning about the Colombian coffee industry on a guided tour of the plantation before giving your tastebuds what they’re really craving; a steaming cup of the finished product.

Not a coffee fan? There’s still plenty to keep you occupied in the Cocora Valley thanks to the region’s lush landscapes and mountainous peaks – prepare yourself for unbelievable views of the valley if you hike to the top of Finca la Montaña.

5.     Cycle through the alleys of Havana Old Town

best travel spots for young adults

If you want to explore Havana differently, then it’s time to take your Cuban adventure off two feet and onto two wheels. Not only will you be able to save your feet for all the salsa dancing you’ll undoubtedly do later, but you’ll also get to see more of this vibrant and colourful capital city. Sounds like a win/win, right?

Cycle past blue, pink and yellow-hued facades – stop for a photo every chance you get – and immerse yourself in this exciting city’s rich culture while mentally bookmarking any art galleries or historical sites you want to return to.

And if you’re lucky, a well-earned mojito will be waiting for you at the end of your ride.

6.     Get lost in the beauty of Africa

Gazelle grazing the plains of Botswana while travellers take photos.

You could easily spend months in Africa and still not see everything this spectacularly diverse continent offers. From the bustling city of Johannesburg and the local villages of Namibia to the bucket list national parks that promise other-worldly scenery and animal sightings, there’s simply too much to take in. But you can try on one of our small group tours.

Spot lions and rhinos and elephants (- oh my!) during game drives in South Africa . Listen to the calls of the wild as you camp underneath the stars in the middle of Serengeti National Park. Marvel at the cascading water of Victoria Falls and take your adventure up a notch by either enjoying a sunset cruise, a helicopter flight or a white-water rafting experience (at your own extra expense). But wait, there’s more.

Gently sail down the Okavango Delta aboard your expertly steered mokoro. Learn about the Maasai folk who live in the Loita Hills of Kenya on an overnight stay in their village. Relax on the pure, white sand of some of the best beaches in Zanzibar . Even if you do all these things, you’ll still have barely scratched the surface.

7.     Eat your way from Bangkok to Singapore

Two travellers enjoying a plate of noodles in Thailand.

If you’re looking for a Southeast Asian adventure to sink your teeth into (literally), our small group tours from Bangkok to Singapore should be at the top of your menu bucket list. From knowing exactly where to stop for all of the best roadside snacks in Penang to recommending cheap hawker halls in Singapore, our leaders will expertly guide your tastebuds through some of the best food hubs in the world.

Devour a huge plate of savoury flat rice noodles (char koay teow) in Malaysia , sit down to a decadent serving of chilli crab in Singapore or savour the sweet combination of mango and sticky rice (khao niew mamuang) in Bangkok; on this trip, one thing’s for sure, you definitely won’t go hungry.

JOIN OUR BANGKOK TO SINGAPORE TOUR

8.     Experience the highlights of Peru

A lone traveller overlooking the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu.

There aren’t enough words in the English language to describe how cool Peru is and why you absolutely and unquestionably have to explore it on our Real Peru adventure.

Kick start your once-in-a-lifetime experience in the foodie capital that perfected ceviche (Lima) by enjoying a guided walking tour of Miraflores with your new soon-to-be best friends (the rest of your group). Take on a David Attenborough-like persona as you scour the wilderness looking for the eyes of jaguars and caimans on a nighttime roam through the Amazon Jungle. Relax with a pisco sour at a café overlooking Plaza de Armas in Cusco.

Whether you hike the Inca Trail , the Quarry Trail or spend the extra time in Cusco before taking the train, all routes lead directly to the main event (and why you chose this trip); Machu Picchu .

One of the greatest examples of ancient Incan history and culture still standing today, this world wonder will leave you speechless at first sight (even if you opted for the train journey). Rising over 2,000 feet above sea level and nestled between Machu and Huauana Picchu mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage listed site is simply something else.

Do I even need to say more? Just book your trip already.

9.     Stay with a local family in Cambodia

Cascading waterfall in Chambok, Cambodia.

On our Real Cambodia adventure, we don’t just take you to the main attractions and iconic sites; we promise an in-depth look into Cambodian culture on an overnight stay in a local village. While a homestay might be daunting for some, it’s a great way to leave the typical ‘tourist bubble’ behind in favour of a more authentic community experience.

Be welcomed into a local family’s traditional wooden stilt home in Chombok and learn about everyday life, including what’s cooked for breakfast (and how it’s done) and what they get up to during the day – think bracelet weaving and traditional dancing.

Then, explore the village’s unbelievable surroundings by visiting a nearby waterfall and swimming in a natural watering hole (yes, the rhyming was intentional). Talk about diving headfirst into an unforgettable cultural experience.

EXPLORE CAMBODIA ON OUR 18-29S TOURS

10. Sail down the Turkish Coast

A group of travellers smiling at the camera at a lookout over the Turkish Coast.

When the calendar ticks over to June 1st, there’s only one place you should be considering for your summer holidays; Turkey. And not just because of its ancient ruins and mouthwatering cuisine but for the opportunity to cruise along this country’s Mediterranean coastline.

Start your sailing adventure in Kekova before crossing sparkling azure waters to the sunken Lycian city of Simena – a civilization that can only be reached by boat thanks to the earthquakes that sunk the land it sits on thousands of years ago.

Either explore the city with its ancient castle and fascinating rock tombs or simply relax in the crystal-clear water with nothing on your mind except the traditional pide and grilled meats you’re going to devour later. The choice is yours.

SAIL THE TURKISH COAST ON OUR ESSENTIAL TURKEY ADVENTURE

Whichever destination you pick and however you choose to spend your time, one thing’s for sure. The places you go and the things you see will change you. In the best way possible. So, what are you waiting for?

9 Best Family Vacations With Young Adults

Jul 18, 2019

See recent posts by Jeff Bogle

We romanticize traveling with our children when they are young and impressionable, often glossing over the more, shall we say, frustrating aspects of that worthy parenting pursuit.

While it can be remarkable to show our wee ones the world, taking a vacation with young adults is where the long lasting memories are made.

These are the best family vacations to take with young adults while they’re in the sweet spot of their growing independence, still curious mind, expanding worldview, and as they are building the foundation of the full-fledged adults they will soon become.

1. Memphis, TN

Nashville gets all the glory, but don’t sleep on Memphis as a destination for a family vacation with young adults. Memphis, Tennessee , is home to the best style of BBQ on the planet and whether you prefer dry rub at Rendezvous, wet at Corky’s or the All-You-Can-Eat-Ribs special on Monday nights at Germantown Commissary in the ‘burbs, your taste in ribs and pulled pork will be forever heightened and nothing back home will ever satisfy in the same way! After you wet-wipe the BBQ sauce away, head out for some live music on Beale Street with your older kids to let them hear the roots of rock and roll. Finally, tour the stunning National Civil Rights Museum located inside the Lorraine Motel; this is one of the most emotional experiences in the whole of America and something every single citizen should do at least once, young adults especially.

When it opens in the fall of 2019, Central Station Hotel will become the premier accommodation choice in Memphis. The renowned century-old transportation hub on Main Street is being transformed into a luxury hotel that will have an expansive vinyl record collection in their Listening Lounge. Sounds like the ideal spot for you and your cool kid(s) to crash during a vacation in the birthplace of rock and roll!

Recommended Hotel: The Peabody Memphis

2. San Juan, PR

I recently took my youngest young adult to Puerto Rico for a dad and daughter photography trip. I knew of Old San Juan’s colorful buildings, delicious local cuisine, sea views and nearby El Yunque Rainforest, and knew she’d love all of it. What I didn’t know about was the adorable feral cat population that quickly would fill up her camera’s memory card and the manic joy of pigeon park, a section of the old city swarming with pigeons that will climb all over anyone ‘wise’ enough to buy and open a pack of feed. This is as a voluntary Hitchcockian situation that will delight your kid and probably freak you out.

Sanitize your hands and arms (and maybe your face, too), then move on to the sandy beaches near Old San Juan, the vibrant neighborhood of La Perla to wander on the edgy fringe of the safe old city, or the rainforest. El Yunque is one reason you’d want to rent a car for a day (the Hertz location located inside the Old San Juan Sheraton makes it easy). Spend that day hiking to a serene watering hole with a rope swing and lots of rocks to climb out into the river. At night, book a mind-blowing bioluminescent bay kayaking tour. There are only five spots on planet Earth to have this naturally illuminating experience and three of them are in Puerto Rico!

Recommended Hotel: Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel

3. Montreal, Quebec

A trip across the pond is likely not in the budget for the vast majority of families, but a journey up north to Quebec can scratch your young adults’ European itch without breaking the bank. Brush up on your bonjour, s’il vous plaît, Merci Beaucoup and other français niceties with a weekend trip to the French-speaking province of Canada! Montreal is a thriving, cosmopolitan city that embraces its charming old town origin story and welcomes francophiles from the States with open arms.

Spend quality time up on Mount Royal, the large hill giving the city its name by buying a couple of fresh baguettes avec fromage et jambon for a memorable picnic with a view. If the weather turns sour, head inside to the Redpath Museum at McGill University. This stellar natural history collection is housed in a glorious building dating back to the 1880’s. Go further back in time in Old Montreal (or Vieux Montreal, in French). This original part of town features preserved buildings from the 17th century, bringing architecture nerds (hand raised!) much joy.

Recommended Hotel: Le Square Phillips Hotel & Suites

4. Voluntourism Vacations

Going away with your young adult with the sole intention of making a difference in communities and/or ecosystems that desperately need help is a fantastic family vacation idea that will fill your heart and soul with joy instead of filling your bag with souvenirs. That seems like more than a fair trade.

Habitat for Humanity runs regularly trips all around the world, with many *nearby* in the Caribbean and Latin America, where you and your kids ages 16 and older will help to build homes for local people in need of shelter. While these volunteer trips aren’t cheap (in the neighborhood of $1,900 per person for a 9 or 10 day Habitat trip, inclusive of all lodging and meals but exclusive of airfare), a portion of the cost is tax deductible.

There are also environmental tourism trips to work with animals, like the adorable sloth rescue and conservation experiences in Costa Rica , available for young adults age 18 and up, along with their grown-ups.

5. Crystal River, FL

You simply cannot run with lions in Africa or chew bamboo alongside pandas in China. But in Florida, there’s a truly immersive, safe, and sensational large mammal encounter available every day of the year.

November to March is peak manatee season, but the docile giants are in the cool river waters on the Gulf coast of Florida year-round. Swimming with these majestic sea cows is pure magic and entirely safe because while massive, manatees are friendly creatures thanks to having no predators. As a result, manatees are not scared of anything or anyone, making it possible to float alongside them as they swim, chew lettuce, and basically live happily ever after in the chilly waters in and around The Plantation at Crystal River .

Because it’s surprising affordable (starting at $65 per person including wet suit and pleasant boat ride) to get in the water with playfully curious manatees during a three-hour tour, this is an out-of-this-world experience for young adults to share with their grown-ups. You may be like me and swat down tourist photo or video packages as a rule, but this is one you’ll want to pay for because there’s nothing quite like watching and rewatching yourself snorkel next to 1,000-pound manatees! It almost doesn’t feel like real life to be with them in the water so having those memories made permanent is a must.

Recommended Hotel: Plantation on Crystal River

6. Denver, CO

If your young adults love the great outdoors, or if you want to book the perfect trip that will spark such a love in them, it’s hard to beat the idea of spending a few glorious days in the crisp, cool altitude of Denver, Colorado .

Let’s start at night, under the stars, in nature, with some live music. Sit or dance side by side during a concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, located just 10 miles west of Denver. This is without a doubt the finest concert venue in the world and all of the best big-name bands and artists play here while on tour. Spending an evening at Red Rocks with your older kids should be a bucket list travel goal for every music loving parent. The bonus is that they’ll think you’re the coolest for bringing them there.

That’s at least one night sorted during your time high in the Rockies! During the days, take a long hike in Rocky Mountain National Park (1.5 hours from Denver), where over 300 miles of trails straddle the subalpine and alpine worlds. After a day in hiking boots, get off your tired feet in Golden, Colorado , and give your thighs or arms a workout instead with a free bike rental or a kayak and tube down Clear Creek. For thrill seekers, visit Lakeside and Elitch Gardens, two fun places representing two sides of the a musement park coin. The latter is a modern gem with all the tricks and flips you expect from a 21st-century amusement park; the former is a curious relic from yesteryear built in 1908 with rides that seem like they’re about as old (the iconic Cyclone is a wooden coaster from 1940).

Recommended Hotel: Origin Red Rocks

7. Baseball-Themed Road Trip

A baseball road trip is a fantastic way to spend time together, share bad-for-you road trip snacks you’d never consider buying at home, bond with your young adult(s), and make memories to cherish long after they flee the coop. Even better than lining up a few baseball games is booking hotel rooms with marvelous views of the ballparks, allowing you and your family to escape the heat and enjoy America’s pastime in air-conditioned luxury!

Start in Baltimore at the Hilton Inner Harbor for an Orioles game in one of ten hospitality suites overlooking the field. The Orioles may not be any good these days, but when the Yankees, Red Sox and Mike Trout’s Angels come to town, you and your kids can watch some top-notch stars whack the ball all over that picturesque park. Just down I-95, 30 minutes or so, is Nationals Park in the D.C. Navy Yard. This is a beautiful new ballpark to see National League action and the Hampton Inn & Suites onsite has ballpark-view guestrooms offering an exclusive vantage point to watch the games in comfort.

Speaking of heat, the Braves have an exciting young team but boy-o-boy does it get toasty down there in Atlanta! After a pre-game dinner at one of the fine restaurants in the incredible new ballpark complex, stay at the Omni Hotel at the Battery for a deluxe baseball experience watching the game with the A/C blasting in your room! Your young adults will love this unique approach to a family baseball adventure.

8. Ozarks, MO

Fun Mountain at Big Cedar Lodge is an indoor wonderland in the Ozarks of Missouri. There’s underwater-themed ocean bowling; a golf simulator to share your love of the game; a 4-story ropes course to safely overcome your fear of heights; a high-tech climbing wall; a cool wilderness fort laser tag arena; a quarter-mile go kart track designed by a NASCAR racing champion and crew chief; and the Flip Zone, a bumper car ride that rotates 360-degrees horizontally and vertically, meaning you may be on your head when your young adults bump into you while laughing hysterically. Even better, a stay at Big Cedar Lodge is the perfect opportunity to watch the classic John Candy movie Uncle Buck with your older kid because the onsite restaurant and soda fountain shop inside Fun Mountain is called—wait for it—Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl & Grill!

For a cool day trip during your family vacation stay in the Ozarks, head to nearby Springfield to take in the Wonders of Wildlife, a new attraction and aquarium covering more than 350,000 square feet and more than 1.5 miles of trails to explore animal habitats and the natural world.

Recommended Hotel: Big Cedar Lodge

9. Washington, D.C.

There’s a lot to see and do in D.C., but we love that The Jefferson hotel is giving younger guests the keys to the kingdom. Through its new “Kids Who Made American History” walking guide, the hotel is inviting young adults to lead a day of sightseeing for their family. Crafted by a historian and former Georgetown professor, some of the walking tour’s road-less-traveled stops include touch points on “the smallest Freedom Fighter” Sheyann Webb, the location of transgender student Gavin Grimm’s Supreme Court trial on his school’s restroom use, and the U.S. Capitol statue of Lewis and Clark’s young expedition leader, Sacagawea.

If you’re feeling playful (or if your young adult is in an ironic mode), borrow the hotel’s mascot, BobbleJeffDC, for cheesy photo-ops at each of these sites. Once the day of hitting the pavement for this remarkable tour of the District is over, The Jefferson has a special set of offerings including mocktails and elevated kid favorites like truffle mac n’ cheese and bison sliders at the hotel lounge. Relax with a book from the exclusive curated shelf of reading material by the likes of Eva Chen and Barack Obama in the Book Room, and at dinner in Plume, check out the kids’ beverage cart rolled tableside for juice pairings (a child-friendly version of the wine paired Tasting Menu) with the Michelin-starred menu. Finally, if you really did love the walk and the history learned, one-on-one lessons are available with the hotel’s resident historian.

Anyone can visit D.C. but this experience will give your older kids an unparalleled look at a wealth of American history that goes above and beyond what’s on display at the fantastic Smithsonian museums.

Europe comprises 44 countries, each with its unique culture, food, language, and architecture. From Prague’s stunning Gothic buildings to Amsterdam’s picturesque canals, there’s something for everyone in Europe.

Many European cities are also very walkable, which makes exploring them even more enjoyable. Another advantage of traveling to Europe is that it’s relatively safe compared to other regions worldwide.

Pickpocketing can be a problem in some touristy areas. Still, if you take necessary precautions, such as keeping your valuables close to you and being aware of your surroundings, you should be fine. In addition to exploring famous landmarks and museums, you can have many other unique experiences while in Europe.

You can attend music festivals in Barcelona or watch street performers on the Charles Bridge in Prague. You can also try regional foods such as paella in Valencia or schnitzel in Vienna.

Europe is an ideal destination for young adults seeking adventure and cultural immersion. With so many countries and cities to choose from, there’s always somewhere new to discover and experience.

Importance of traveling for young adults

For many young adults, traveling is a crucial rite of passage and a chance to explore new cultures, meet new people, and learn about themselves. It’s an opportunity to leave their comfort zones and experience the world beyond their backyards. Here are some reasons why traveling is important for young adults.

Firstly, traveling enhances personal growth and development. It provides a chance to see things from a different perspective and learn about new cultures, languages, foods, customs, and ways of life.

Exposure to diverse backgrounds can broaden one’s worldview by challenging preconceived notions and stereotypes. Secondly, traveling can improve social skills by providing opportunities for young adults to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s fellow travelers or locals in the destinations they visit, interacting with new people not only helps individuals develop communication skills but also increases empathy towards others. Traveling can improve mental health by escaping daily stressors like work or school.

As individuals explore new cities or landscapes they may have never seen before; it opens up doors for adventure while reducing stress levels that come with daily routine activities. From seeing breathtaking views in Santorini or swimming in crystal clear waters in Turkey, every travel destination offers something unique to uplift one’s mood.

Traveling offers many benefits for young adults beyond just seeing new places or taking pictures for social media posts. It’s an opportunity for personal growth through exposure to different cultures while improving social skills by meeting diverse groups of people from around the globe leading to improved mental well-being that every individual deserves.

Factors to consider when choosing destinations (budget, interests, safety, etc.)

When it comes to planning a trip to Europe , there are several factors that young adults should consider before choosing a destination. Budget, interests, and safety are key factors that can make or break your experience abroad.

Budget is one of the most important considerations when planning a European trip. Young adults on a tight budget may want to consider more affordable destinations like Budapest or Ljubljana.

These cities offer plenty of attractions and activities at a fraction of the cost of some popular tourist destinations like Paris or London. When budgeting for your trip, consider the cost of transportation, accommodations, food and drink, and any sightseeing activities you plan.

Another important factor to consider is your interests. Are you interested in art and history?

Then Florence or Rome might be ideal destinations for you. If you’re into nightlife and partying, Amsterdam or Berlin could be more your style.

And if outdoor adventure is what you’re after, consider visiting places like Santorini or Stockholm , where there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring. Safety should always be a top priority when traveling abroad.

While most European countries are considered safe for tourists, it’s still important to research beforehand. Make sure you know which areas are safe to visit at night and how to stay safe while using public transportation.

It’s always wise to keep an eye on your belongings while out in public areas, as pickpocketing can, unfortunately, be common in certain cities. Considering these key factors when choosing a destination for your European adventure as a young adult can help ensure you have an unforgettable experience abroad without breaking the bank or compromising safety!

The city is famous for being the birthplace of the Renaissance and boasts some of the world’s most impressive art and architecture. Whether you’re an art history buff or just looking to soak up some Italian culture, Florence has something for everyone.

One of the top attractions in Florence is the Uffizi Gallery. This museum houses an extensive collection of Renaissance art, including works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci.

London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, is a must-visit destination for young adults. There is so much to do and see in this vibrant city that any traveler would need help to get bored.

London has something for everyone, from museums, art galleries, and historical sites to nightlife and shopping . For those interested in history and culture, a visit to Buckingham Palace should be on your itinerary.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

Travel Tips for Young Adults

Transportation options (budget airlines, trains, buses, etc.).

There are many transportation options when traveling around Europe as a young adult. Depending on your budget and travel preferences, you might want to consider taking advantage of the following affordable means of transportation:

Firstly, budget airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet are excellent options for those who want to fly between European countries quickly and cheaply. With fares starting at just a few euros one way, it takes time to beat these airlines’ value.

However, it’s important to remember that budget airlines often charge extra baggage and seat selection fees. Additionally, be prepared for long lines at the airport and strict baggage weight restrictions.

Secondly, trains are another popular option among young travelers. The Eurail Pass is a great way to see multiple countries on one trip while enjoying an extensive European rail network.

With various types of passes available, from 3 days up to 3 months, you can customize your itinerary according to your needs. Moreover, train travel provides scenic views and is often more comfortable than flying.

Taking buses is another budget-friendly option when traveling around Europe as a young adult. Companies like Flixbus offer routes throughout many countries with prices starting at just a couple of euros per journey.

While buses may take longer than planes or trains, they can be more flexible with their schedules and sometimes have more direct routes between cities. No matter which mode of transportation you choose when exploring Europe as a young adult traveler, plenty of affordable options will help stretch your budget further without compromising on the quality of your travels!

Accommodation options (hostels, Airbnb, budget hotels, etc.)

Accommodation is one of the most significant expenses on any trip, and for young adults traveling on a budget, finding affordable accommodation options is crucial. Luckily, Europe offers various accommodation options suitable for all budgets and preferences. Here are some popular choices:

Hostels:  Hostels are an excellent option for young travelers who want to save money while meeting other travelers. Most hostels offer shared dorm rooms with bunk beds or private rooms with shared bathrooms.

Some hostels also have communal spaces such as kitchens and lounges where travelers can socialize and cook meals. Hostel prices vary depending on the location, but they’re generally more affordable than hotels.

Airbnb:  Airbnb is a popular alternative to traditional hotels, allowing travelers to rent apartments or rooms from locals. Airbnb properties are often cheaper than hotels, offering more space and privacy than hostels.

Additionally, staying in an apartment allows travelers to experience local life firsthand by living in neighborhoods rather than touristy areas. Budget Hotels: Budget hotels are also an option for young adults traveling on a budget.

These hotels offer clean, basic rooms with essential amenities such as a bed, bathroom, and Wi-Fi access. While budget hotels may not be as luxurious as higher-end options, they provide a comfortable stay at an affordable price.

When it comes to choosing accommodation in Europe, young adults traveling on a budget should first identify their priorities (privacy vs. socializing) and interests (touristy vs. local areas), then consider the available options (hostels vs. apartments, rentals vs. budget hotels). Whichever alternative one chooses, always confirm the location’s safety before booking any accommodations in unfamiliar places or neighborhoods.

Saving money while traveling (food, sightseeing, transportation, etc.)

When traveling as a young adult, money can be tight, and it’s important to be smart about your spending. Here are some tips on how to save money while traveling in Europe.

First up, food. Eating out can be expensive, especially in touristy areas.

One way to save money on food is by cooking for yourself. If you’re staying in a hostel or Airbnb, look for accommodations with kitchens to make your meals.

Another option is to grab groceries from a local supermarket or street market and picnic in a park or other scenic spot. Not only will this save you money, but it’s also a great way to enjoy the local culture and scenery.

Next up is sightseeing. Europe is full of amazing sights and attractions with an entry fee.

However, there are ways around these fees if you research beforehand. Many museums offer free entry on certain days or during specific hours.

Some cities also offer free walking tours led by locals who share their knowledge and insights about the city’s history and culture. Additionally, many churches are open to the public for free and are often filled with beautiful artwork and architecture.

Transportation can consume a big chunk of your budget if you must be more careful. While taxis may seem convenient, they’re often very expensive compared to public transportation options like buses and trains, which can easily take you around the city at an affordable cost (although buses may take longer than taxis as they do multiple stops).

If you plan and book tickets online in advance for trains or budget airlines between cities (or countries), you could save significantly more than purchasing same-day tickets from train stations/airports directly. By being strategic about food choices, sightseeing activities, and transportation methods, you can stretch your budget further while still having an incredible time exploring Europe!

Staying safe while traveling

Safety should always be a top priority when traveling to a new place.

Europe is generally considered a safe destination for tourists, but it’s important to take precautions to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Firstly, research the destination and learn about any potential safety concerns.

This could include dangerous areas of the city, scams to watch out for, or risky activities to avoid. It’s also good to check government travel advisories before you go.

While in Europe, ensure you always keep your valuables safe. This includes keeping your passport and other important documents in a secure location – consider using a money belt or hidden pocket.

Be aware of your surroundings and monitor your belongings when in public places. In addition, it’s important to stay alert and aware when out at night or in unfamiliar surroundings.

Avoid walking alone late at night and stick to well-lit areas with plenty of people. Consider taking public transportation or calling a taxi to return to your hotel after dark.

Overall, staying safe while traveling in Europe is largely about using common sense and being prepared. By taking simple precautions and staying vigilant throughout your trip, you can have a fun and safe experience exploring this exciting continent!

Meeting locals and other young travelers

One of the best parts of traveling as a young adult is the opportunity to meet people worldwide.

Whether it’s locals or other young travelers, there are plenty of ways to connect with people and make new friends during your Europe trip . Meeting locals can be a great way to learn about the culture of the places you’re visiting and get insider tips on things to do.

One of my favorite ways to connect with locals is through Couchsurfing. This website allows you to stay with local hosts for free and get a taste of living in their city.

It’s also a great way to meet other travelers since many hosts organize events or outings for their guests. If Couchsurfing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to meet locals.

Joining a language exchange group or taking a cooking class can be fun to meet people who share your interests. Another option is conversing with people while exploring–whether at a cafe, museum, or park.

Of course, meeting other young travelers is also an important part of the experience. Many hostels organize social events like pub crawls or walking tours to help guests meet each other.

You can also join online travel communities like Couchsurfing or Meetup.com, which often have groups for young backpackers traveling through Europe. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself – chances are others are looking for new friends too!

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

Many people dream of visiting Italy for the food, and that certainly doesn’t disappoint, but there’s so much more to this stunning country! Hike along cliff-side trails, unearth the myths and stories of the Roman Empire, climb a volcano or visit world-famous art galleries.

An adventure in the Land Down Under is an absolute must when you’re young. Australia is known for its vibrant nightlife, jaw-dropping natural beauty (think the Great Barrier Reef) and exhilarating activities such as surfing, snorkeling and spotting wildlife.

Budget adventures for travelers in their 20s

Travel doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are just a few places to explore in your 20s on a budget:

Full of amazing food, striking natural beauty and ancient sites such as Machu Picchu, Peru will take your breath away, and still let you stick to a budget. An average of $35 USD per day will be more than enough to eat, drink and adventure your way through Peru.

Whether you’re traveling down the Mekong Delta and visiting floating markets and rice terraces or enjoying cocktails in buzzing Ho Chi Minh City, you can have an amazing time in Vietnam without breaking the bank, at an average of only $30 USD per day.

You can easily explore the lush jungles, pristine beaches and unique animal life in Costa Rica for about $35 USD per day. Enjoy ziplining through rainforests, ocean kayaking, and encounters with amazing wildlife without worrying about spending too much.

While this country isn’t always known for affordability, some careful planning and budgeting can allow young travelers to spend $70 USD per day, depending on the region. Learn to surf in California or explore the Grand Canyon on a budget.

Tips for young travelers

Don’t overpack.

When packing, especially for a longer trip, think about everything you wear in one week, and be prepared to wear clothes more than once wherever possible. If you can do laundry while traveling, you can significantly cut down on the clothes you need to bring.

Learn local words and phrases

Be respectful of public spaces, courteous to locals, and, where possible, show that respect by learning a few basic words and phrases such as greetings and asking for directions in the local language. Even if you make mistakes, you’ll always gain points for trying!

Learn how to prepare one local recipe

One of the best parts of traveling is trying the local food. Learning a local recipe is the souvenir that keeps getting better. Not only will you get to remember your time in that country, you’ll get to share your memories with your friends and family through food.

Unmissable festival & events

Rio carnival.

Considered the biggest carnival in the world, nearly 2 million people per day take to the streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to celebrate in beautiful, intricate costumes. Held every year before Lent (usually in February or March), this colorful carnival should be on your list!

Oktoberfest

The world’s largest festival of its kind, Oktoberfest in Munich is a 16- to 18-day folk festival that runs from mid-September until the first weekend in October. Travelers are treated to parades, live music, carnival rides and, of course, all the German beer they could ask for.

La Tomatina

La Tomatina is an annual festival held in Buñol, Spain, on the last Wednesday of August and is generally known as the world’s biggest food fight. Tens of thousands of people take to the streets for a messy, crazy and amazing food fight, painting the streets red with tomatoes.

Day of the Dead

On November 1 and 2, celebrants all across Mexico create altars to remember the dead and serve traditional dishes to their families in honor of their loved ones who have passed away. It’s a heartfelt, colorful, and beautiful celebration and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Frequently asked questions about young adult travel

St. James’s Club Morgan Bay, St. Lucia is an all-inclusive resort that is another great pick for your St. Lucian holiday.

This is a chilled out and relaxing resort that offers the hospitality of the extremely friendly staff.

The resort is fairly large, and between the 345 rooms, you can land yourself a room that offers either an incredible garden view, beachfront or ocean view.

There are also suite accommodation if your budget is a more flexible one.

Grace Bay Rd, Grace Bay TKCA 1ZZ Turks & Caicos Islands (649) 946-5500 Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

Have you been looking for a fancier alternative to Royalton St. Lucia?

They’re both in the Caribbean, but Club Med Turks & Caicos is on Grace Bay.

For those unfamiliar, it’s reportedly home to the most beautiful beach in the world.

It’s even more beautiful than the island of Providenciales, where Royalton St. Lucia is.

Furthermore, it’s famous for its extensive sports program, including sailing, tennis, and golf.

Club Med Turks & Caicos is an exciting place to visit with the family.

There are several water adventures you can participate in.

However, this is an exclusive adult resort so if you are traveling with your kids, they must be over 18.

You can enjoy the private beach or make use of all the incredible all-inclusive features.

Turks & Caicos is also an incredible destination to take a holiday with your spouse or friends and I would highly recommend making most of Grace Bay Beach.

6. Hard Rock Riviera Maya

The resort has 1,264 incredible rooms and is attached to a stunning, private white sand beach.

There are several famous sites of Mayan ruins located not far from this resort, including Chichen Itza and Tulum.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing resorts: which one is right for you.

When it comes to comparing resorts, organizational skills are a must.

Prioritizing your family’s needs and wants is essential for an enjoyable holiday.

Next, take note of the destinations’ features, whether good or bad.

For example, Royalton St. Lucia offers the most bang for your buck.

It’s in a beach location with plenty of water sports and activities for your young adults.

However, it’s pretty popular and can get crowded during peak season.

This means more tourists and more noise, which can disrupt the overall service quality.

Moon Palace Cancun and Hard Rock Cancun, on the other hand, are both located in Mexico.

Moon Palace offers beach access and multiple pools, while Hard Rock offers ocean views.

The only con is that both are known for having inconsistent food and service quality.

If you’re looking for a fourth option, consider St. James’s Club Morgan Bay, St. Lucia.

It offers breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea, but expect crowds during peak travel seasons.

How I Picked The Resorts

As a travel writer, my family and I had the pleasure of visiting and seeing these resorts up close.

Not only did we have a pleasant stay, but we also had the chance to interact with other visitors.

For a more in-depth comparison, I also did extensive research and scoured review sites.

Our Rating Method

I rate these resorts based on the following criteria.

  • Accommodation Quality: I use this criterion to evaluate the comfort and quality of accommodations of every resort. Are the rooms spacious, well-maintained, and equipped with modern amenities? Does it provide a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone? I consider these factors when rating the accommodation quality.
  • Dining Options and Quality: This criterion assesses the variety and quality of dining options available. Does the on-site restaurant serve tasty food? Does it cater to everyone’s dietary preferences and needs? Are the meals enjoyable for the whole family? I ask myself these questions when evaluating dining options and quality.
  • Age-appropriate Activities: I use this criterion to evaluate the range of activities suitable for young adults. Are there sports and water-based activities on-site? Are there other entertainment options that cater to their interests and abilities? I consider these factors when rating age-appropriate activities.
  • Safety and Security: This criterion evaluates the resort’s safety and security measures. Are there reliable security measures and strict safety guidelines for all activities and facilities? Are the premises secured? Is the staff trained to handle any emergency? I ask myself these questions when assessing safety and security.
  • Value for Money: I use this criterion to assess the pricing and affordability of every property. Does it offer packages and discounts to families? Are the prices reasonable or affordable? Does each stay come with quality accommodations, dining, and activities? I consider these factors when rating value for money.
  • Location and Accessibility: This criterion evaluates the resort’s location and accessibility. Does it offer easy access to local attractions and activities? Does it offer a sense of seclusion and tranquility? Is it near to the airport and major transport hubs? I ask myself these questions when rating location and accessibility.

The best all-inclusive resorts for teens and families are Beaches Turks And Caicos Resort Villages & Spa, Club Med Turkoise All Inclusive Resort, and Atlantis Paradise Island Resort.

best all inclusive resorts for families with young adults travel photo

These all-inclusive resorts are bustling with an energetic and tropical vibe.

They’re all right by the beach, offer plenty of activities, and are set to give your young adults a great time.

Cancun is one of our favorite places because of the Moon Palace and Hard Rock.

We had fun with Moon Palace’s water park, wave pools, flow rider, and dolphin encounters.

Meanwhile, Hard Rock offers a more music-centric experience with its bars and nightclubs.

While we relaxed inside our digs, our older kids watched live shows by famous artists.

We also appreciated both resorts’ variety of dining options.

Lastly, St. James’s Club Morgan Bay, St. Lucia, greeted us with the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Our little ones had fun splashing around in the pools and hanging out with other kids at the resort’s Kids Club.

These three resorts are incredibly fun in their own distinct ways.

But what made Royalton St. Lucia a clear winner for us was its value for money.

It’s the most affordable resort among the four, yet it offered so much for us, our young adults, and our little ones.

First, it is situated on a lovely beach surrounded by lush tropical plants and mountains.

The view is spectacular, and it is one of our current favorites.

Second, we liked that it has a designated lounge area for young adults as well as a kids’ club.

Finally, it had various gourmet dining options that our older children enjoyed exploring.

Needless to say, among the best all inclusive resorts for families with young adults, this one is our favorite.

This group seeks fun that is easily accessible, safe, and affordable. Of course, there is always global competition to contend with, but it is good to know that traveling for fun is still an option domestically. You don’t have to go outside the country to have a great time.

In this post, we will discuss the top spots to plan fun vacations for young adults while taking variety, affordability, safety, great places to eat, and historical monuments into consideration.

Table of Contents

So, here are the few best vacation spots for young adults in the US.

Louisiana: french quarters, new orleans.

From historical views, excellent food, and evening street parties to Ghost tours, the French Quarter in New Orleans is a young adult’s vacation spot dream.

Fun Vacation Spots For Young Adults In The US

Why . The French Quarter is one of the richest and most unique cultural hubs the US offers. It has incubated its own practically autonomous identity. New Orleans is unlike anywhere else and offers unique experiences you can’t find anywhere else.

Make a stop at Jackson Square Park to enjoy some artistry by locals, or visit one of the many historical museums that the French Quarters is known for. Or even better, enjoy some Habor jazz brunch or dinner on the Mississippi river aboard the last authentic steamboat, the Natchez . There is something for everyone.

The French Quarter is also renowned for its evening street parties to which all are invited. Taste the night music, enjoy slushies, and with a belly full of gumbo.

California: Pacific Coast Highway

best travel spots for young adults

Why? California is widely renowned for its natural attractions, and this is for a good reason. It sits on the precipice of our Pacific shelf, and it’s genuinely one of the best fun vactaion spots for young adults in the US, especially for those seeking a road trip!

The highway snakes along the coast and offers unparalleled views. It’s a trip that can be tailored to fit what you’re looking for; you can make it as remote as you’d like, though it’s highly recommended to stop at some of the awing cities along the way. There are plenty of beaches and beach-related natural activities, like surfing, swimming, boating, etc. The Pacific Coast also hosts a stunning group of cities, from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Also, if you are looking for more things to do here, consider visiting the wine country or whale-watching.

California: Yosemite National Parks:

Beautiful coasts, deserts, reaching mountains—California has it all, and this is evident in the Yosemite National Parks.

best travel spots for young adults

Why? Yellowstone , The Grand Canyon , and Yosemite National Park are all places in California that offer endless outdoor activities.

There is something to do for everyone here, which makes it one of the best fun vacation spots for young adults in the US.

While unique in their own ways, all three spots offer stunning landscapes. Yosemite National Park is also known for its beautiful granite cliffs, meadows, lakes, waterfalls, and substantial sequoia groves. It’s the perfect sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of today’s world.

Colorado: Rocky Mountains National Park

best travel spots for young adults

Why? Colorado is a hiker’s nirvana. The Rockies are one of the best places to travel to in the US, especially for those young adults who appreciate the wilderness. The Rockies host the highest peaks in central North America!

It’s pretty self-evident that the best thing to do is to explore the breathtaking nature this mountain range and national park offer. This could be in the form of wildlife watching, hiking, biking, camping, and so much more!

Minnesota: Minneapolis

best travel spots for young adults

Why? There are so many fun vacation spots for young adults in the US to visit in Minneapolis, you may want to add this State to your list.

Minneapolis is known for nature. It has over 10,000 lakes (including one of the great lakes, lake Superior) and multiple wooded trails. It is a nirvana for outdoor hobbyists. But the attractions don’t end with the outdoors.

My favorite place to visit in Minneapolis is the Mall of America . With over 520 stores and 60 restaurants, Mall of America is the largest mall in the United States and makes the list of the top 20 biggest malls worldwide. This mall gets over 40 million visitors every year, who enjoy more than just shopping. The mall features an aquarium, a 13-screen movie theatre, fun rides for children and adults, and many other attractions.

Prince’s private estate and production complex, Paisley Park, features artifacts from his life, and it is one of the most visited places in Minnesota as Paisley Park opens its doors to guided tours.

Other places to visit while vacationing in Minnesota include the International Wolf Center in Ely, the Cathedral of Saint Paul in Saint Paul, Bob Dylan Way in Duluth, Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis, Voyageurs National Park, and the Marine Art Museum in Winona.

New York, Times Square

best travel spots for young adults

Why? New York Time Square is the most visited destination in the US and the world. Times Square is a commercial junction dotted with shops and lit up by billboards. The famous Broadway Theater District sits in the bustling intersection and offers the best entertainment. Visitors in the square flock to countless restaurants and shops and enjoy the sights and sounds the square has to offer.

I think that Times Square is one of the top fun vacation spots for young adults in the US because it offers so much. From the opportunity to see characters from major tv shows or movies, great places to eat or drink, and a variety of entertainment, but my favorite, would be the opportunity to watch an award-winning Broadway show.

Nevada: Las Vegas

New Orleans is everything a millennial traveler could want, it is also one of those travel spots that is visited, by almost everyone, at least once in their lifetime.

best travel spots for young adults

Why ? Las Vegas is not just about betting and winning. Of course, if that’s why you are there, there’s no better place to gamble. However, if you are not feeling so lucky and would instead catch other entertainment, this is an excellent place for a variety of fun.

From the Fountains of Bellagio , a free performance available to all taking a walk down the strip, A-list celebrity performances, half-day tours, to extreme spots. Not to mention multiple museums such as the Mob Museum and Madame Tussauds !

Most entertainments are affordable, lodging is shockingly inexpensive, plus there is so much food to sample at reasonable costs. All of these make Las Vegas one of the top fun vacation spots for young adults in the US.

Oregon: Portland

We are listing the entire city of Portland as a fun vacation spot for young adults simply because there is so much to do here for this group of travelers.

best travel spots for young adults

Why ? There is a little something for everyone in Portland, which makes it top of the list for great fun vacation spots for young adults in the US.

Do you love drinking? Then a sampling tour of Brewvana , which boasts over 70 breweries, might be the activity for you. Are you a bookworm? Then you cannot leave this city without visiting Powell’s City of Books. And it is literally what the name says. A four-story independent bookstore that houses a city block of books. Don’t forget to stop at Pittcock’s Mansion to get a view of the skyline of this beautiful city and to see several artifacts that tell the history of Portland.

Portland can also brag about many eateries, such as Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen, Mucca’s Osteria, Eem, Lovely’s Fifty Fifty, Kachka, Toki, and so many more.

Texas: Austin

Music, street life, good food, shopping. These are just a few of the things that Austin is known for. It is also home to the renowned University of Texas (UT), it is also where well-known companies like Tesla, Apple, Visa, Charles Schwab, and eBay have their headquarters.

best travel spots for young adults

Why ? The ACL, a music festival held at Zilker park in Austin, is one of the biggest nationwide attractions this city offers. Over 130 artists perform here annually, and the celebration held over two weekends attracts more than 450,000,000 people.

Austin is known for great music, and many beautiful restaurants and upscale shopping are available in areas such as the Domain, 2nd Street District, and Barton Creek Square.

Austin is also known for excellent restaurants, and you can tour the city for historical sites, take part in a unique biking adventure, tour haunted places in a hearse, and so on.

The Florida Keys

Spanning over 120 miles at the very top of Florida is a group of islands that make up the tropical wonderland known as the Florida keys.

best travel spots for young adults

Why? The Florida Keys is a vacationer’s paradise. Plus, it’s affordable and has a unique vibe different from anything else on this list. It’s perfect for those who enjoy the water and the tropical atmosphere and for those who enjoy good food and drinks. If you love eating and outdoor fun, you probably would never want to leave.

Strangely enough, Florida’s best attraction is relegated to its bottom-most tip or Mile Marker Zero. But that’s the kind of stuff that cultivates a truly unique identity. Plus, driving from island to island is a surreal experience everyone can enjoy.

Fun things to do in the Florida Keys for young adults include kayaking, scuba diving, sunset boat cruises, museums, and historical places.

There’s almost too much to list—from the ocean to drinking to good food to an Underwater Jesus (the kind of Jesus practically everyone can get behind—maybe even he needs a holiday like this sometimes), there won’t be a dull moment.

Illinois: Chicago

Chiang mai, thailand, denver, colorado, disney cruise line, jackson hole, wyoming, the maldives, myrtle beach, south carolina, wisconsin dells, wisconsin, best vacation spots for families with teens, african safari.

Best for ages: 15-18

Here’s why: Simply put, teens deserve to be treated to the ultimate dream family vacation before they fly the coop.

Do this: Book an all-inclusive package with flights (dealing with logistics in Africa can be tricky) offered by a tour operator like The Luxury Safari Company . For families with teens, they recommend visiting Sosian Lodge in the north of Kenya. In seven nights, families can strengthen bonds and have one-of-a-kind experiences while fly camping (sleeping in the bush), river tubing, working on an African cattle farm and even visiting with predator research teams. Of course, there are plenty of game drives and walking safaris, so teens can get the most epic of photos for Instagram.

Stay here: Ask for the Family Cottage at Sosian Lodge , set on 60,000 acres of Kenyan wilderness meets working cattle ranch. Another great option is Puku Ridge Camp in Zambia. Teens staying at this lodge in South Luangwa National Park will appreciate the private plunge pools and opportunities to meet school children in local villages. Finally, for the teen who insists on having good Wi-Fi and access to tennis courts or mountain biking (not easy to find in the African bush), there’s Feline Fields in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert.

Butler County, Ohio

Best for ages: 13-16

Here’s why: This best of the Midwest destination proves that even inner-city teens can have fun in flyover states. Butler County also makes for a great halfway point for families coming from different coasts.

Do this: Teens who identify as foodies will love the aptly named Donut Trail where they can get their donut passport stamped at each of the funky boutique donut shops along the trail. (There is exactly a baker’s dozen!) Teens who collect all 13 stamps can collect a free T-shirt. Aspiring equestrians can get their horse fix at any of the area’s stables where they can rent horses or join a group ride. Teens who want to learn or practice wakeboarding will have a blast at Wake Nation . With its unique cable-tow system, no boat is required and beginners can learn at slower speeds. And for the ultimate rush, drive 30 minutes south to Cincinnati for indoor skydiving at iFly .

Stay here: Hueston Woods Lodge and Conference Center is just a few minutes by car from Miami University — one of the oldest public universities in the U.S. Guests can enjoy archery, community bonfires, badminton, nature trails and access to Acton Lake and Heuston Woods State Park .

Charleston, South Carolina

Best for ages: 13-18

Do this: “For the slower-paced families, Sullivan’s Island is absolutely gorgeous and worthwhile," says Brittany Betts, a travel expert with  Florida Panhandle . "The beach there is well-kept and quiet, but there’s also a cute town full of unique shops and restaurants down the main strip. The reason why it’s combined with Charleston is because they are so near one another and this would be for the more fast-paced families that like doing several attractions,” she continues.

“There’s so much history in just this small town, but there’s also a large market in the area, cute restaurants with live music, and unique tours in old dungeons and through gardens that are really informative and fun for teenagers,” Betts explains.

Stay here: If you're looking for an affordable hotel option, the Courtyard Charleston Mount Pleasant is a great choice. Complete with outdoor pool, your teen will love relaxing after a long day of sightseeing.

"Surprisingly I’ve been to Chiang Mai twice! I went once as a teen on a high school trip and then again as a grownup with my parents. I can’t say enough nice things about Thailand, the people are truly the kindest you’ll ever meet, and the nature is unmatched, it’s almost like the colors are brighter in Thailand. Some of the activities I got up to were exploring temples, checking out the night markets and getting to try a traditional Thai massage (I still think about it to this day)." — Vivien Moon, commerce editor at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Chiang Mai is a safe, affordable, entry-level destination in Asia where families can learn about one of the most welcoming cultures on earth. It’s also where you can feed growing teenage boys on $10 a day.

Do this: Volunteer at one of Chiang Mai’s many elephant sanctuaries. While most weekly programs are only for ages 18+, Elephant Nature Park has one-night programs open to families with kids of all ages. Spend the day watching the elephants bathe in the river before helping to feed and walk them, and rest during the night in a traditional bamboo hut. In the ancient walled city, visit Chiang Mai’s 117 Buddhist temples, and even sign up for a monk chat at a wat to learn more about the religion and how most Thai boys spend their early teenage years becoming monks. Sign up for a Muay Thai camp or a cooking class including a shopping trip to some of Southeast Asia’s most colorful markets. Schedule your trip for November if you think your teen will love the world-famous Yi Peng Lantern Festival or in April for Songkran , the world’s largest water fight (where weapons include everything from buckets to squirt guns and hoses) held in conjunction with the Thai New Year.

Stay here: With its rooftop pool, a rarity in Chiang Mai, it’s hard to beat Akyra Manor . Teens will appreciate its location in the hip, artist-influenced neighborhood of Nimman. Between its spacious suites and being within walking distance of the lively night market, Anantara Chiang Mai Resort is also teen-approved.

"My parents and I had a wonderful trip to Costa Rica last year, thanks to all the accommodations/activities that Caribe Fun Tours planned for our itinerary. We started our trip at Hotel Costa Verde in Manuel Antonio, which had jungle views, pools around the property, yoga in the mornings and was walking distance from the beach. In Manuel Antonio, we enjoyed ocean kayaking and snorkeling and a guided hike in Manuel Antonio National Park . We ended our trip at Hotel El Silencio del Campo in La Fortuna, which had volcano views, hot springs around the property, a farm and garden to explore and a complimentary breakfast." —  Lauren Witonsky , associate editor at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Teens are notoriously moody, but that won't stop them from enjoying Costa Rica , often called the happiest country on earth. Show them rainforests, volcanos, white sand beaches and what the "pura vida" life is all about.

Do this: Soar through the canopy in Monteverde, the high altitude cloudforest where ziplining for tourism was pioneered and the rest of the world followed suit. Sky Adventures Monteverde Park also has an aerial tram and a hanging bridges tour where you can see the levels of the cloudforest and its biodiversity up close. Teens who want to say they’ve climbed a volcano can do so at Cerro Chato, next to Arenal, the country’s most famous volcano and one of the most active in the world. No trip to Costa Rica is complete without a visit to its beaches, stretching for miles along both the Caribbean and Pacific. Learn to surf in the funky town of Tamarindo at Iguana Surf where the instructors all speak English and no one goes home without having caught their own wave. Hike in the tropical waterfront paradise that is Manuel Antonio National Park — Costa Rica’s answer to Yellowstone. (You can laugh at them, but don’t feed the monkeys.)

Stay here: If your teens are feeling a need to binge their favorite show while on vacation, they’ll love the turbo speed Wi-Fi at Tierra Magnifica , a luxury boutique property in the surf community of Nosara. (You’ll love the panoramic views and sense of safety.) If an all-inclusive is more your speed, teens will appreciate dining options and beachfront activities at The Westin Reserva Conchal.

best travel spots for young adults

"Even though I went as an adult for the first time, I can say that I would’ve probably been obsessed with Denver if I was a teenager. The variety of teen-friendly activities I hit up when I was there brought me back to my younger years. From gawking at all of the vintage aircraft and space shuttles at Wings Over The Rockies to leisurely perusing the stunning exhibitions at the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Museum of Contemporary Art to taking in America’s favorite sport at Coors Field , Denver’s just a quintessentially cool city to explore." —  Jess Bender , senior editor at Shop TODAY

Sierra Hoeger, an associate editor at Shop TODAY (pictured below), has spent time close to Denver on vacation — more specifically, at Rocky Mountain National Park . She says, "Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding areas proved to be the perfect family vacation for my sister and I in our teens/early 20’s. We’re a pretty outdoorsy family and it seemed to have activities the entire family could enjoy, from hiking to checking out local coffee shops, visiting sites from our favorite movies and doing some shopping. We’ve been itching to get back ever since we first visited!"

Here’s why: The Mile High City is a must for families with teens who want to play in the mountains but have big city amenities.

Do this: Social media mavens can start the day at the Denver Selfie Museum where the backdrops are just as Insta-worthy as the surrounding Rockies. Or capture those tricks for TikTok at the 60,000-square-foot Denver Skate Park . Aspiring artists will want to check out the myriad collections at the Denver Art Museum (18 and under are free). In the winter, adrenaline junkies can’t skip a trip to Ruby Hill Rail Yard, an urban terrain park and snowboarder’s paradise.

Stay here: For golf fans, the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Denver is a perfect choice if you're looking for a hole in one, and it's within walking distance of most of the city’s downtown sites.

“I went on a Disney Cruise with my mom in my very early twenties and we had the best time, it’s definitely a must-do for any Disney-loving family. Some people might think it’s just for little kids (which it definitely has tons of kids activities) but there’s something for every age on the ship with a touch of Disney magic. There’s amazing live shows, character interactions and each ship goes somewhere different so you’ll get a different experience port-wise depending on which cruise you take!” — Shannon Garlin , an associate editor at Shop TODAY

Best for ages: 13-17

Here’s why: Cruises remain popular with families with teens for a reason; they’re less stress for you and teens love the independence. Thanks to owning everything from the “Frozen” franchise to “Star Wars” and Marvel, Disney can keep all kids — from toddlers to teens — entertained.

Do this: Book any Disney Cruise Line voyage on Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy. (Family Caribbean or Alaskan cruise in 2024, anyone?) Both ships promise “ultra-cool plush pads” designed exclusively for teens. The official teen club, Vibe, is a 9,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor oasis that only teens, using their Key to the World card, have access to. Vibe (ages 14-17) has a fountain bar, a 103-inch LCD TV, plenty of video game pods and two pools. Edge, the lounge for tweens (ages 11-14) has similar amenities as well as a lighted dance floor, a 10-foot-tall cinema, a photo booth and individual computer stations.

More info: DisneyCruise.Disney.Go.Com

" Jackson, Wyoming  is for the outdoorsy kid who loves skiing, snowboarding or simply building a snowman. They have the National Elk Refuge and is an iconic place to take pics and watch wildlife up and close. My favorite activity was riding on a fat bike and just enjoying the scenic views with the Teton Mountain Range as the backdrop.” —  Jannely Espinal , a commerce writer at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Jackson Hole is a year-round vacation destination and convenient home base for exploring two of the country’s most popular national parks. With its small-town setting (population 10,500) where everything is within walking distance, teens can easily explore on their own.

Do this: Ski or snowboard together at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort , one of the most iconic ski resorts in the world. Rent bikes and ride 56 miles of paved paths or 115 miles of mountain bike trails, most with striking valley views. Since a family who rafts together stays together, battle the rapids on the Snake River or go for a scenic floating safari in search of moose, elk, bears and more. No trip to Jackson is complete without venturing into Yellowstone National Park via the equally stunning Grand Teton National Park .

Stay here: Located at the base of Snow King Mountain Resort , Snow King Resort is Jackson Hole’s best option for families who want immediate access to all kinds of outdoor adventures. Ski, snowboard, tube or — if you visit outside of winter — ride the mountain coaster and alpine slide. There’s also a massive mountain-top ziplining course, fly fishing and stargazing readily available for the curious teen.

Louisville, Kentucky

Here’s why: Underground ziplines, a baseball museum, the Muhammad Ali Center and a bridge allowing travelers to be in two states at the same time are just a few of the memorable experiences families with teens will enjoy in Louisville , aka Derby City.

Do this: Tech-savvy teens will want to visit Ovrdrive , a state-of-the-art center with racing simulators and more than 100 virtual reality games. (Those ages 12 and up can also throw axes.) Head to the Louisville Slugger Museum and take home a personalized bat as a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Cool off in the Louisville Mega Cavern boasting nearly 20 miles of underground tunnels and the world’s only ziplines that are entirely underground. Finally, check out Churchill Downs where teens can learn about the art and sport of horse racing by either attending a race or visiting the Kentucky Derby Museum (whose interactive exhibits include a horse race simulator).

Stay here: All rooms at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Louisville Downtown come with separate TV rooms so teens can stay up late watching their favorite shows. The property also offers free breakfast, free Wi-Fi and is only a block from Museum Row.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Here’s why: With several daily nonstop flights from major cities in the U.S., it’s easy and affordable to reach this beautiful international beach destination. Los Cabos is a drier alternative to Cancun, plus you don’t have to worry about hurricane season.

Do this: Between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific, take advantage of the year-round swells and learn or practice surfing in Los Cabos. There are approximately 1,000 miles of coastline, so it’s never too crowded. Teens keener on marine life can snorkel and dive alongside the likes of friendly sea lions and ominous-looking, yet harmless, hammerhead sharks. Other animal encounters include camel safaris in the outback. Despite its proximity to water, Los Cabos’s breathtaking landscape includes a desert playground. For a high-speed tour, opt for an off-road ATV or UTV excursion with Cactus Tours . For the best value, buy the Park Pass at Wild Canyon Adventures , which gives teens access to unlimited ziplining, horseback riding, bikes, a hanging bridge and more. The price even includes an ATV or UTV tour, as well as a bungee jump or giant swing ride.

Stay here: Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection has a teen club with a recording studio. Grand Velas Los Cabos ’ teen club has lots of games (including an Xbox Kinect), a bar serving non-alcoholic drinks and even an in-house DJ spinning the latest beats every night until midnight.

"I went to the Maldives for my honeymoon in 2019 and stayed at Joali . It’s definitely a luxury property but I felt it was worth it after all the hours we spent on airplanes getting there for such a milestone event." — Adrianna Brach, the editorial director at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: You don’t have to be on your honeymoon to visit the Maldives . With its 1,190 islands, it’s a tropical paradise with lots for teens to do. An obvious bucket list destination, it’s also easy to justify taking when it could be your last vacation as a family.

Do this: Try new watersports like wakeboarding, kitesurfing, jet blades and even hydrofoils (which could be deemed more of an air sport). Become PADI-certified (ages 10+) and take an underwater family holiday card you’ll never forget. Since every other kid wants to be a marine biologist when they grow up, why not learn about conservation by transplanting coral, planting a tree or helping rehabilitate endangered sea turtles? Treat them to a treatment at Spa by ESPA at Joali Maldives where there’s a special menu for teens.

Stay here: Amilla has a program for older kids and teens including fire dancing lessons, guitar lessons, mocktail making classes and even nighttime glow rider bicycle tours. One & Only Reethi Rah also has a teen program, One Tribe, with dedicated teens-only chill space. And for adrenaline lovers? Stay at the Four Seasons at Landaa Giraavaru , which boasts a Mastercraft X55 boat that makes its own surf and comes complete with sound system.

Meanwhile, young fans of "The Walking Dead" won’t want to miss the AMC hit show-themed escape room , and fans of "The Simpsons," The Simpsons in 4D . Teens wanting to hang out with other teens can easily do so on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade , home to one of the country’s tallest Ferris wheels. Of course, there are also plenty of beach activities including surfing, wakeboarding and horseback riding to choose from.

Porto, Portugal

Best for ages: 16+

Take a scenic boat or train ride to the Douro Valley, the world’s oldest demarcated wine region where teens (16+) are legally allowed to taste wine and — more importantly — learn how it’s made.

Stay here: The breakfast buffet at The Lodge Wine & Business Hotel will satisfy any growing teen, and its picturesque outdoor pool is a rarity in this city founded in 1123.

More info: VisitPortugal.com

Reno Tahoe, Nevada

Here’s why: Reno Tahoe is a unique destination where mountains meet desert. It’s where annual events include the Zombie Crawl, the Great Reno Balloon Race, the National Championship Air Races and — last but certainly not least — Burning Man.

Do this: Venture downtown to take iconic Instagram shots of the murals (there are more than 100) and to pose for pics with the Burning Man sculptures . Embrace your inner Flintstone and bowl at the National Bowling Stadium , also called the “Taj Mahal of Tenpins.” Another good rainy day activity for teens is a trip to Need 2 Speed , an indoor go-kart racing track open seven days a week. It also boasts blacklight mini golf and a VR game. Beautiful weather? Drive to nearby Lake Tahoe to kayak in the crystal clear water or hit the slopes at one of the area’s renowned resorts. Teens can also explore hundreds of miles of hiking and mountain biking trails year-round.

Stay here: The coolest hotel in town (and perhaps Nevada) is Whitney Peak Hotel . It has a bouldering park on-site and is home to one of the world’s tallest climbing walls where teens can climb up for a bird’s-eye view of the Reno Arch.

More info: VisitRenoTahoe.com

San Diego, California

Here’s why: Whether or not you agree with its nickname “America’s Finest City,” you’ll agree San Diego has beautiful year-round weather and so much to keep your teen(s) happy they’ll ask about going to college there.

Do this: Beach hop your way around the city’s nearly three area beaches, or cave hop via kayak or SUP . Take a self-guided street art tour , stopping to pose in front of massive murals — often illustrating important messages — for pics for the ‘gram. Other must-consider attractions include the San Diego Zoo , San Diego Air & Space Museum , San Diego Automotive Museum and the Comic-Con Museum .

Stay here: The Sun Outdoors San Diego Bay welcomes RVs in addition to its fully-furnished tiny home rentals complete with fire pits and front porches. Between the on-site arcade, food trucks, poolside movie screen, basketball courts and indoor/outdoor fitness center, teens will never find themselves bored on vacation.

Seattle, Washington

Here’s why: The city that birthed the grunge music movement is an artsy, alternative place most teens will feel so welcome in they’ll want to move there.

Do this: Seattle’s vacation ideas are vast and plentiful! For starters, take the popular Underground Tour to see what’s beneath the city via its vast network of interconnecting tunnels. Next, visit the Museum of Pop Culture , home to exhibits like Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame and Indie Game Revolution. Teens developing a taste for coffee will also want see the many coffee shops in the city that birthed Starbucks and a growing trend toward artisanal brews. Don’t forget to catch the famous flying fish show at Pike Place Market — home to several pop-up murals that would look great on the ‘gram. There are also plenty of water sports to try in Puget Sound.

More info: VisitSeattle.org

Space Coast, Florida

Here’s why: Just an hour from Orlando , Florida’s Space Coast is an inspirational beach destination where teens can learn about everything from space exploration to manatee conservation.

Do this: Get a trip to Disney World , Universal Studios and Epcot out of the way. Then head southeast to the childhood home of Kelly Slater (it’s the East Coast's Surf Capital) for some beach time. Explore further inland on a kayak or SUP tour winding through tunnels of mangrove trees. Sea turtle sightings aren’t guaranteed, but the Space Coast does have a huge concentration of them. Teens obsessed with LED lights will be in awe in the bioluminescent lagoon . The Space Coast is one of very few places in the world to see this phenomenon where the tiniest of marine creatures emit a neon blue light for protection. Teens who want to work for NASA will never want to leave the Kennedy Space Center with its rocket garden, 3D space films, shuttle launch experience and journey to Mars. For a really memorable experience, book some add-on "enhancements" that includes immersive training courses and even a casual chat with an astronaut.

"I stayed at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells a few years ago and had a ridiculously good time. There’s something for literally everyone — an indoor waterpark, arcade, amusement park, bowling alley, spa, golf simulator... I could go on. Such a great destination if you’re in the Midwest and looking for a fun family vacation!" — Audrey Ekman, a production associate at Shop TODAY

Here’s why: Wisconsin Dells is the waterpark capital of the world. Families can stay for two weeks and still never ride all the slides.

Olympus to take on the nine-foot-tall waves at Poseidon’s Rage, one of the world’s largest wave pools or float on The River Troy, the world’s fastest manmade river. Tired of water-based activities? Attempt the Wizard Quest, the first fantasy team-building (or family-bonding) game in the country or unleash your inner Viking at Asgard Axe Throwing .

Stay here: While several area resorts boast their own waterparks, the top-rated property on TripAdvisor is the family-owned and -operated Black Hawk Motel & Suites . All guests get free admission to Timbavati Wildlife Park and a Wild Fun Zone attraction pass.

10 Best Vacation Spots For Adult Children

Now that your kids are grown up, these destinations will allow your family to bond in a whole new way.

vacations that are fun for adult children

When your kids were young, you probably took them on plenty of memorable vacations—Disneyland, Six Flags amusement park...Disney World . While those getaways were enjoyable, chances are you got tired of mouse ears, kiddie rides, and chasing a toddler while you were supposed to be relaxing.

Then, when your child got to the teen years, trips probably were still a little frustrating. Not only did your teen make a huge issue of where you would go and what you would do, she took her hard-to-please attitude along on the vacation and spent a large chunk of the time being moody.

Guess what. Now that your child is a young adult, vacations may be a lot more pleasurable—for both of you. “Travel still offers the same benefits as it did when your kids were younger: a unique opportunity to bond with one another through explorations, a chance to learn about new destinations and cultures side-by-side, and a fun escape from the monotony of day-to-day life,” says Amanda Norcross, features editor of Family Vacation Critic , TripAdvisor.com’s family travel site. But now that your children are grown, the challenges of traveling with little ones are gone, and because the time you spend together is more fleeting, a vacation is an incredible way to get some one-on-one time, she says.

For Foodies: New Orleans, Louisiana

Food lovers, rejoice!  New Orleans  is famous for its delicious Cajun and Creole foods (think jambalaya, gumbo, and king cake). Be sure to stop by  Brennan’s  or  Emeril’s New Orleans , which are faves among visitors and locals. Though the cuisine keeps people coming back, New Orleans isn’t only about grub. It’s considered the birthplace of jazz and known for a variety of other types of music, so the nightclubs, bars, and celebrations like Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest are always full of lively tunes and dancing. If you and your child are feeling lucky (and he or she meets the age requirement: 21 or older), try your hand at one of the casinos. When it’s time to recharge, settle into one of New Orlean’s many hotels.  St. James Hotel  (from $92 per night), near Harrah’s New Orlean’s Casino, and  Hotel Manzarin  (from $169 per night), located in the heart of the French Quarter, both get high ratings from guests.

Looking for something a little more cultural? Visit the  National World War II Museum  or the  New Orleans Museum of Art . Some other things to add to your itinerary: “Explore the French Quarter, book  a tour of the Bayou , check out the  Voodoo Museum , and grab a beignet at the famous Café du Monde,” says Jessica Bisesto, senior editor at  TravelPirates , a travel deals and inspiration site.

For Outdoorsy Types: San Diego, California

“Beautiful beaches, cool neighborhoods, and incredible year-round weather make  San Diego  the perfect place to spend time as a family,” says Bisesto. San Diego has everything a good vacation needs, all wrapped in a beautiful picture-worthy package. There’s something for history lovers (Mission San Diego and  Old Town San Diego ); Balboa Park offers an eclectic mix of nature, culture and science (hop on  a private segway tour !); and of course there’s the 70 miles of coastline beaches where you and your brood can relax, read a book, or hit a few waves. Then there are the unforgettable excursions like mountain biking, sea kayaking and hot air ballooning. (A  sunset hot air balloon ride over Del Mar  will take your breath away.)

PREVENTION PREMIUM:   50 Best Walks In America

The  San Diego Zoo  rocks, even for adults! It’s 100 acres and home to more than 3,700 animals. It has guided bus tours, an aerial tram that takes you across the zoo, and the 4-D theater is the coolest! The sleeping arrangements in San Diego aren’t too shabby either.  Hilton San Diego Bayfront  is, as its name suggests, right on the water. All of its rooms and suites have a view of the bay and skyline. It has six dining venues, a spa, heated saltwater pool and a fitness center. (Here are  10 secrets hotel employees won't tell you .) Even better, it’s within walking distance of  Gaslamp Quarter , which is home to shopping, dining and nighttime fun. “The ‘kids’ can head to the Gaslamp Quarter and experience the nightlife once Mom and Dad have gone to bed,” Bisesto says.

For Aquatic Types: Space Coast, Florida

Miami and Orlando may get most of the attention, but Florida’s  Space Coast , 45 minutes east of Orlando, also deserves props. It’s made up of six towns: Cocoa Beach, Melbourne & The Beaches, Port Canaveral, Titusville, Palm Bay, and Viera. It has 72 miles of coastline and the average high temperature is 72° year-round, so it’s easy to find a space in the sand and watch the gorgeous blue waters along Florida’s Atlantic coast. Space Coast is home to the  Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex , where you and your family can see live rocket launches (talk about out of this world!). And at the  Brevard Zoo , you can take a guided kayaking tour through the animal exhibits or a zipline adventure over the zoo to see the animals from a different view. Then retreat to  Holiday Inn Melbourne-Viera Conference Center  (from $94 per night). It’s a 5-minute walk from the zoo, has great rates, and it gets good reviews on hotel booking sites. If Space Coast’s constantly sunny skies and ocean have you longing for more time on the water, book a  cruise from Port Canaveral , the world’s second busiest cruise port.

For People Who Love An All-Inclusive: Cruise to Anywhere

Speaking of  cruises , they’re always an enjoyable vacation destination for the whole family. Cruise ships themselves are like a vacation before the vacation. Onboard you'll find casinos, gyms, spas, restaurants, swimming pools, movie screens, cooking classes, lounges, nightclubs, and much more. So you and your child can spend time together for some activities and split up and do your own thing when you want. And your destination—whether it’s the  Caribbean , Bahamas, Hawaii,  Mexico , Alaska, Europe, or  Bermuda —is sure to be a delightful and memorable experience the two of you will cherish. Even better, cruises aren’t expensive. You can book a  7-night Western Caribbean cruise  from Miami for as little as $399 per person with Norwegian Cruise Lines. With Carnival, a  4-night Mexico cruise  from Long Beach, California starts at $199 per person. And if you’re looking for a real steal, a  4-night Bahamas cruise  from Port Canaveral with Royal Caribbean is $169 and up per person.

If you’re not up for traveling abroad, try a smaller-scale cruise. “There are U.S.-based cruise options where travelers can visit multiple cities and states in the comfort of a ship, while picking and choosing how active you’d like to be while in port,” Norcross says. “Canada/New England cruises offer lobster bakes in the summer and peak foliage in the fall, Pacific Northwest cruises sail throughout the region’s wine country, and Mississippi River cruises are a true taste of Americana,” she says. We found deals for a  7-night Canada/New England cruise  from New York starting at $799 per person, a  4-night Pacific Coastal cruise  from Seattle at $269 and up per person, and a  5-day Lower Mississippi River Cruise  from New Orleans for $799 and up for each person. (Here are  5 reasons you always get sick when you travel—and how to stay healthy .)

For Adventurists: Honolulu, Hawaii

Hawaii is one of those places that’s on nearly everyone’s vacation bucket list. For good reason. Sunny skies, white sand, and turquoise waters make this state look and feel like paradise. And let’s face it: Everyone should get to wear a lei while sitting outside sipping on a tropical drink at least once in their lifetime. What better place than  Honolulu , the capital of Hawaii? Home of the world-famous  Waikiki Beach , here you’ll find surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding and a long list of other activities. ( Here's why you should try doing yoga on a stand-up paddleboard .) If you’re a newbie, try  Gone Surfing Hawaii  for surfing lessons ($110 and up) or paddle boarding lessons ($100 and up). With  Island WaterSports Hawaii , you can ride on a self-propelled, electric underwater scooter (starting at $104).

Honolulu is also the spot for world-class shopping, palate-pleasing eats, and exciting nightlife. If someone needs a cultural fix, visit the  Bishop Museum  and  Iolani Palace . When you’re done, book a room at  Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa  (from $269 per night). The property is steps from the beach, has a full service spa and several on-site restaurants.

For Culture Lovers: New York City

NYC  is another one of those spots every American should venture to at least once. There’s so much to do and see in the “city that never sleeps” that there’s no way both you and your child won’t enjoy it. Some must-see locations include the  Statue of Liberty ,  The National September 11 Memorial and Museum , and the Brooklyn Bridge. At Central Park, the two of you can have a picnic, exercise, or just people watch. Then there’s nothing like  Times Square , the site of the New Year’s Eve ball drop. The giant digital billboards and flashing neon lights are sure to wow. In addition, both of you will likely have a good time at a Broadway (or off-Broadway) show. The  Phantom of the Opera  (from $99) receives rave reviews. And  Stomp  (from $82), the off-Broadway musical performance, is a blast. Even if you don’t plan to ride the subway, stop in at the  Grand Central Terminal , the world’s largest railway station. If you want to avoid the huge crowds, don’t go during rush hour.

Food and hotels are also a big deal in NYC. Whether you and your kid pig out on pizza (try  Di Fara’s Pizzeria ) or go for something different (try  Times Square Diner ), you’re sure to eat well. And if you stay at  Sanctuary Hotel New York  (from $170 a night) or  Doubletree by Hilton – Times Square South  (from $130 a night), you’ll get a good’s night rest. That’s good, since you’ll need the energy to continue checking out this amazing city the next day.

For Explorers: The Mighty 5 in Utah

If you and your kid are the adventurous types or simply love national parks, visiting The Mighty 5 in southern  Utah  should be on your to-do list.  The Mighty 5  includes Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Parks. You can visit one, several, or all parks. Though it may seem a bit redundant to explore multiple national parks during one vacation, each park is different from its neighbors, and all are breathtakingly beautiful. Canyonlands has hundreds of colorful canyons and mesas; Arches is home to thousands of natural sandstone arches; you can view petroglyphs (carvings on rock walls, created by ancient Native Americans) at Capitol Reef; Bryce Canyon is filled with red rock pillars called hoodoos; and Zion is known for its slot canyons. (Here are  your 10 biggest walking and hiking pains, solved .)

Helen Patrikis, a Huntington, New York mother of two 20-somethings did a 7-day trip to visit all of the parks with her sons a few years ago. The trio kept their focus on hiking, but they also did some stargazing, mountain biking, and they got to sleep in a variety of places, including a lodge, hotel, and nature (at  Moab Under Canvas , Patrikis slept in a beautifully furnished tent and her sons had an adjoining teepee).  Aikens Lodge  (from $68 per night) is another good place to stay. “This was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had traveling together,” she says. In addition to the hiking, biking, and stargazing, The Mighty 5 also offers river  rafting , picnicking, camping, and even mule riding.

For Europhiles: London, England

Looking for a cultural experience—and one that's overseas? “Europe is particularly popular, especially if your college student is studying abroad for a semester or a year,” says Lauren Goldenberg, mother to a 21-year-old and founder of  The Family Traveler . “We love to send the rest of the family to explore the region with their student,” she says. Even if your child isn’t studying abroad, Europe ( London  to be exact) should be on your list of sightseeing adventures. Here you can  tour the Tower of London and get a glimpse of the Crown Jewels , take a picture with Big Ben, and visit  Buckingham Palace  to watch the famous Changing the Guard ceremony. Another stop on your London itinerary should be  Madam Tussauds  to see some of the world’s most famous faces. Rub shoulders and take photos with celebrities and world leaders that include The Royal Family, Barack Obama, Albert Einstein, Madonna, Rafael Nadal, William Shakespeare, and Rihanna.

MORE:   The Ultimate Travel Bucket List

London is also known for its dining—whether you want fish and chips, bangers and mash (AKA sausage and potatoes), afternoon tea or beef wellington, you’re guaranteed to have some appetizing eats. After all the sightseeing and food feasts, relax in one of the city’s many hotels.  The Waldorf Hilton  and  Conrad London St. James  score high points with TripAdvisor visitors.

For Ski Bunnies: Aspen, Colorado

Aspen  is the place to be if you and your child are looking to experience a real winter wonderland. Four ski mountains make this city a haven for winter recreation. “Active families flock to Aspen, Colorado to divulge in fantastic hiking, skiing, camping, cycling, and climbing,” says Bisesto. Don’t be surprised if your adult kid suddenly becomes a photographer. The beautiful scenery compels people to take tons of photos and share them on Facebook and Instagram. After a fun-filled day, your family can retire in one of Aspen’s many  hotels  or  cabins . The  Inn at Aspen  (from $129 a night) and  Aspen Meadows Resort  (from $189 a night) are highly rated.

Don’t write off Aspen if you can’t visit during the winter. There’s plenty to do in the spring, summer, and fall months. “Book a backcountry Jeep tour, go on a horseback riding tour for opportunities to see off-the-beaten-path parts of town, or take the 24-mile round-trip journey down Castle Creek Road to explore the nearby ghost town of Ashcroft,” Bisesto says.  Blazing Adventures Aspen  does Jeep tours (from $98 for a half-day tour), and you can book a horseback riding tour through  T-Lazy-7 Ranch  (starting at $75 per person). Paragliding, hot air balloon rides, camping, golfing, fishing, rafting, and kayaking are also available during the warmer months, she adds.

For a Little Grown-Up Fun: Las Vegas, Nevada

Your kid may balk at this one at first. Mom is not the travel companion most people think of when they plan a trip to Sin City! However, a parent-child trip to Vegas can actually be fun. First up is the gambling, of course. Head to the Las Vegas Strip where there are tons of casino resort hotels like the Bellagio, Harrah’s, Caesars Palace, and ARIA. Each hotel has major deals. For instance,  Harrah's  has a package that gives you a daily weekday $25 food and beverage credit; both Harrah's and  Caesar's Palace  are having an Extend Your Summer Sale, with rooms up to 20% off; and at  ARIA  and  Bellagio , M life Rewards members can earn comps for dining, rooms, entertainment, and FREEPLAY offers. If you book a room at one of these hotels, you can play and rest where all of the activity is happening. Or if you prefer a quieter environment come bedtime, Bisesto recommends  The Palms , which she says provides fantastic amenities and an off-Strip location.

Casinos and gambling aren’t the only available activities. “Many concerts and performances routinely take place in Las Vegas, so whether your family wants to see Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Blue Man Group or Cirque du Soleil, there’s something that every family member will enjoy,” says Bisesto. Your group can also ride a gondola at the Venetian, get a spectacular view of the city at the top of the  Stratosphere Tower , or visit the Mob Museum. Another perk of Vegas? The food.  Picasso ,  The Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas ,  Andiamo Italian Steakhouse , and  Mr. Mamas  all have top scores on TripAdvisor.

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Expect smiles 24/7.

Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. ( InsideJapan offers wonderful private tours led by local experts.) "Our kids loved trains, making the bullet train around Japan one of the best parts of the trip," says Spence.

Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. One of the most memorable additions to the cities, however, is a couple of days near Mount Fuji, where Hoshinoya Fuji offers spectacular views of the elusive volcano alongside exceptional local cuisine and rugged outdoorsy activities, including a food smoking workshop, canoeing, and e-biking. At the end of the day, there's no better place for a globe-trotting family to relax and share stories than around a bonfire under the stars, with live acoustic music, s'mores, and Japanese whisky.

The Best Cruises For Young Adults (6 Cruise Lines)

I f you are a regular reader here, you know that I am a big fan of cruising – both on family cruises and adult-only cruises. Cruises can be a great way to explore the world in an easy manner – without having to worry about traveling between destinations and finding places to stay.

Beyond that, cruises offer a number of activities on board that can be very fun for people of all ages. So, are cruises good for young adults? With lots of amenities and activities that appeal to older teens and young adults, we think they are a great vacation option. Read more about the best cruises for young adults, including what to look for when you book your cruise.

Disclosure: We have been on some of these cruise lines at no cost for purposes of review, and have paid my way on many others. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Looking for a cruise? You can check the prices of a variety of cruise lines at this link .

Why Cruise as a Young Adult

If you haven’t been on a cruise before, you may think of cruises as something for either children or for older people. But, young people can have a great time on a cruise. Here are some benefits:

  • Onboard activities that are both fun and a great way to meet other young adults
  • Easy way to explore the world without having to travel to multiple destinations
  • Great for a group because there is something for everyone
  • Delicious food with lots of different options
  • Easy vacation with minimal planning
  • Close to all-inclusive experience makes budgeting for vacation easier
  • Amenities that appeal to young adults, like live music, water parks, pool parties, zip lines, comedy shows, basketball courts, and more

Whether you are a young adult traveling on your own, with your parents, or with a group, a cruise is such a fun option.

What to Look for in a Cruise/Cruise Line

Once you’ve decided to take a cruise vacation, you’ll need to choose a cruise line, ship, and itinerary. I’d recommend starting with a cruise line and then choosing the ship and itinerary after that.

When choosing a cruise line, look for activities that you want to participate in. Do you want to see Broadway-caliber shows? Do you want to eat gourmet food? Do you want to do adventure activities on the ship, like rock climbing and zip lining?

After choosing a cruise line, you’ll probably want to look at the itinerary. You can find cruises traveling the world.

For a beginner cruise, you may consider taking a Caribbean cruise. There are lots of fantastic destinations, and you’ll also likely have some great weather so you can enjoy the sun decks, pools, and beaches at the ports.

What Are The Best Cruise Lines for Young Adults?

Offering 25 ships with a variety of different itineraries, Carnival Cruise Line is known for its festive, party atmosphere on board the ships. Sailings on Carnival are relatively affordable, and there are so many different itineraries and port options.

Over 10 years ago, Carnival rolled out its Fun Ship 2.0 concept. This initiative includes a variety of entertainment and culinary options, including partnerships with celebrities such as Guy Fieri on these fun ships. As Carnival cruises have been renovated and introduced, they have included these features.

The newest Carnival ships, including the Mardi Gras, Celebration, and upcoming Jubilee, include the Bolt Sea Coaster, the first roller coaster at sea. Adventure lovers will definitely want to try this out.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Like some of the other cruise lines on this list, Norwegian has recently introduced some new ships with all of the popular features that young adults will love. There are currently 19 Norwegian cruise ships with 4 Prima class ships on order.

Activities and amenities do vary by ship, so be sure to research the specific ship before booking. Some fun activities include the Plank and Ropes Course (Norwegian Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Class ships), a mini-golf course on the Norwegian Bliss, go-kart tracks, and a waterpark (on the Norwegian Breakaway Class ships).

Norwegian Sailings also offers themed parties, many of which can be fun for young adults on board the ship. They offer 42 different departure ports, so there are plenty of options to choose from. They also offer solo cabins, if you’d like to travel alone.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages , a new-ish cruise line offering three (soon to be four) ships, is very popular among young adult guests. This cruise line has made a lot of changes to the cruise paradigm and is exclusively available to adults (18+). I’ve been on Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady three times now, and absolutely love both the ship and the cruise line.

While Virgin ships don’t have the coasters, mini golf, and water slides of some of these cruise lines, they do have a wide range of activities that young adult cruisers will love. All of the ships offer fun activities, including “shot for shot” (a mixology seminar that also teaches you how to take great social media images), board games, Scarlet Night (a huge deck party at night ending with a pool party), dance parties, and a big float party at the Bimini Beach Club.

Focused on fitness? While Virgin Voyages does offer parties and events each night, they also have a robust fitness program. There’s a huge fitness center, as well as an offering of dance and workout classes. There are also plenty of healthy food options, including a juice bar where you can get fresh pressed juices.

Virgin Voyages also offers a spa, beauty salon, nail salon, barber, and even a tattoo parlor. There’s so much to do on the ships, but they also offer some great ports of call, including spots in England, Greece, and the Caribbean. They also have great dining options – all of which are included in your cruise fare.

Virgin Voyages is an excellent choice for solo cruisers. While most cruises do charge a single supplement, Virgin has dedicated some specific smaller cabins for solo travelers.

Disney Cruise Line

You may be wondering if the Disney Cruise Line , which is known as an extremely family-friendly cruise line, is good for young adults. In my opinion, people of all ages have plenty to enjoy on a Disney cruise ship and it’s a popular choice, even beyond young families.

Disney Cruise Line currently has five cruise ships, with two additional ships on the way. While these ships do offer some of the Disney touches they are known for, they aren’t just for kids. Activities on these Disney cruises include music trivia, movies, beverage seminars (for those 21+), silent disco parties, and more.

Disney Cruise Line also has a fantastic spa, with a Rainforest Room offering therapeutic showers, saunas, hot tubs, and more. There are also some great adult-only areas, where you can get away from the kids on board.

While the Broadway-style shows are Disney-themed, they are still fun for anyone to watch. The ships also offer movie theaters where you can see first-run movies.

For many young adults, the Disney Cruise Line is the nostalgic choice for a cruise. You’ll see many young adults sailing with their parents on family vacations.

Celebrity Cruise Line

Celebrity Cruise Line currently has 15 ships, with an additional ship expected in November 2023. While these ships are definitely not adult-only, there are some great activities that young adults will enjoy. It’s definitely not a party atmosphere, but if you are looking for a relaxed vibe with some fantastic amenities, this is a great option.

Celebrity was merged with Royal Caribbean in 1997, but the cruise lines are pretty different. On Celebrity cruises, expect to find some beautiful common areas, along with adult-friendly activities such as glass-blowing, a Turkish spa, delicious restaurants, and much more.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line

Royal Caribbean ships are known as some of the most fun, with loads of activities on board. These vary by ship but include things like rock climbing walls, iFly skydiving, FlowRider surfing simulators, escape rooms, bumper cars, and water slides. You will never be bored on one of these ships.

Royal Caribbean also offers some world-class entertainment options on board. While the shows are all fantastic, they also have some fun game shows, trivia, and other on-board activities.

Because the activities on Royal Caribbean cruises vary, I’d really recommend looking at the specific ship that you are considering to see what is offered. In addition, we’d recommend booking an itinerary that stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas – Perfect Day at CocoCay. As the name suggests, this island offers something for everyone, including Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest water slide in North America.

What to Do When Onboard

Regardless of which of these cruise lines and cruise ships you choose, you’ll want to do some things while on board. It’s best to try to book these activities in advance wherever possible. Sometimes availability is limited if you wait, especially for the most popular activities.

Booking windows do vary by cruise line. For instance, Disney’s Castaway Club members are able to book activities first (in order of their level) once their cruise is paid off. However, with Virgin Voyages, many of the onboard activities can’t be booked until you are on the ship’s WiFi. Do some research in advance to know what you want to book and when you can book it.

What to Look at With Port Activities

Looking forward to getting off the ship? You’ll have various options at the different ports of call – from booking excursions on the ship to booking your own. There is definitely a risk with booking your own, so make sure you weigh your options carefully.

When booking, think about the type of experience you want to have. Do you want a city tour? Would you prefer to taste some of the local cuisine? Are you looking for some adventure? Or maybe you’d prefer relaxing on a beach.

The quality of excursions can vary, so look at reviews before booking. In most cases, port excursions can be booked in advance.
