Boho Braids 101: A Step-By-Step Guide To Bohemian Braids & 25 Effortlessly Fly Boho Braid Styles

You’re going to be obsessed with these looks – trust us.

Teresa Munyiri

You’re going to be obsessed with these looks – trust us!

It’s literally impossible to comb through TikTok or IG these days without spotting at least two or three inspiration-worthy braid styles.

And if you’ve been thinking about switching out your lace wig for some stunning summer bohemian braid styles, consider this your sign: We found boho braid styles that are so effortlessly fly you’ll be begging your hairstylist to put you down for the weekend.

Whether you’re looking to channel Ryan Destiny or want to go bold with color, you’re bound to find a boho/goddess/gypsy box braid style when you peruse through these styles.

But first, let’s have a little recap, starting with…

What Are Bohemian Braids?

Also known as “goddess box braids,” “boho box braids,” or gypsy box braids,” bohemian braids are a braided hairstyle that features curly hair bits added in various sections along the length of the braid.

They’re basically a regular box braid with curly hair braided into a box braid to allow for a soft but casual, undone-yet-edgy look.

What’s The Difference Between Bohemian Braids And Goddess Braids?

boho box braids

There’s no difference between the two. Contrary to what most HairTok enthusiasts claim, goddess braids are not thick cornrows but box braids with cute curly ends added along the braids, aka boho braids, bohemian braids, or gypsy braids.

What Hair Should You Use For Bohemian Braids?

Boho braids require two types of hair—human hair with a wavy texture for the tendrils and curly or wavy texture hair for braiding.

The Rebundle’s Braidbetter Bundles are perfect for this because they’re sustainable and easy to use. The Freetress Deep Twist Hair is also amazing.

How To Install Bohemian Braids

Before we even get to the details, you need the following:

  • 6 to 8 packs of pre-stretched boho braiding hair
  • 3 to 4 packs of water wave hair or deep twists (if you want sexy synthetic curls)
  • Mousse or sheen spray
  • A rat tail comb
  • Hair conditioning gel (Style n Jam is the recommended product for braiding hair)

Now let’s get into the boho braiding methods, shall we?

Bohemian Knotless Braid Method

bohemian vox braids

Boho braids are typically done on traditional box braids or the popular knotless braids. And since everyone’s going knotless nowadays, that’s what we’ll go for here.

So, to do it:

1. Start with cleansed, blow-dried, and product-free hair

2. Part your hair accordingly (most stylists prefer starting at the bottom horizontally using a rat tail comb)

3. Apply some shine n jam, then part further into smaller sections. Using the horizontal parting method allows you to have clean, neat, and uniform braids at the end.

4. Braid the individually parted section about a quarter of an inch and then slowly start feeding in your pre-stretched hair

5. Do this repeatedly until you have a decent-length braid formed

6. Take your water wave or deep hair twist, separate it with your fingers to loosen the curls, then feed it into your box braid

7. Continue braiding until you achieve your intended length

8. Apply mousse all over your head, then lay the baby hairs/edges

Here’s a tutorial to help you out:

Crocheted Boho Box Braids Method

Unlike with the knotless method where both pieces are fed in, here the box braids go first

The curly hairs are then crocheted in several times, and you achieve the desired look

This video can show you how to do it perfectly:

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do boho braids last.

Bohemian box braids can last up to six weeks with proper maintenance. As for how long it takes to get them installed, a full head of boho braids usually takes about five to six hours max.

How Much Do Boho Braids Cost?

The overall cost of bohemian braids ranges from $300 to $600. However, what you pay is mainly dependent on the location of your stylist, the price of your hair extensions, and the size you want your goddess braids.

How Should You Take Care Of Your Bohemian Braids?

It’s pretty easy.

  • Always wear a silk bonnet/scarf to bed at night
  • Wash your boho braids with sulfate-free shampoo at least once every week. Make sure to apply conditioner and hair oil after (as you do with your regular haircare routine).
  • Use a dry shampoo and a cotton ball to cleanse your scalp if you’re not big on washing braids. You could also go for an apple cider vinegar rinse to eliminate scalp buildup and dandruff.
  • Apply mousse or a moisturizing hair spray to tame frizz and flyaways. And also to keep your braids looking fresh and neat all day.

Everything You Need To Know About Getting Bohemian Braids

Have you been eyeing those effortlessly chic, bohemian-inspired braids that seem to whisper tales of freedom and adventure? Bohemia braids, or boho braids, are not just a hairstyle; they're a statement—a celebration of creativity, individuality, and the carefree spirit that lies within each of us. Perfect for anyone looking to add a touch of whimsy to their look, these braids blend traditional techniques with a modern twist, offering endless versatility. Let's embark on a journey to unravel the beauty of Bohemia braids, ensuring you have all the info you need to transform your hair into a bohemian dream.

Introduction to Bohemian Braids

Bohemian braids , often known as boho braids, are the epitome of laid-back luxury. These braids incorporate loose, flowing styles with traditional braiding techniques, often embellished with beads, feathers, and other accessories that accentuate their free-spirited vibe.

Why Go Boho?

Opting for boho braids means embracing a style that's as versatile as it is beautiful. Whether you're headed to a festival, a wedding, or just want to spice up your daily look, boho braids offer a unique blend of elegance and casual charm.

1.Choosing the Right Type of Bohemian Braid

From fishtail braids intertwined with delicate flowers to loose, waterfall braids adorned with tiny beads, the world of boho braids is vast. Selecting the right type depends on your personal style, hair length, and the occasion.

2.Preparing Your Hair

Before diving into the braiding process, it's essential to prepare your hair. This means ensuring your locks are clean, well-conditioned, and detangled. A smooth canvas is key to creating beautiful, lasting braids.

3. Step-by-Step Guide to Bohemian Braiding

Now that your hair is prepped and ready to go, it's time to start braiding! Follow these simple steps to achieve beautiful Bohemia braids:

  • Section Your Hair: Divide your hair into small sections using a comb or your fingers. The size of the sections will depend on how thick you want your braids to be.
  • Start Braiding: Begin braiding each section of hair using your preferred braiding technique. Whether you opt for a traditional three-strand braid or something more intricate like a fishtail braid, the choice is yours!
  • Loosen Up: Once you've finished braiding each section, gently tug on the edges of the braids to loosen them up and create that signature Bohemian vibe.
  • Accessorize: Add some flair to your braids by incorporating accessories such as beads, feathers, or flowers. Get creative and let your personality shine!

4. Styling Options with Bohemian Braids

One of the best things about Bohemia braids is their versatility when it comes to styling. Here are a few ways you can rock your braids:

  • Half-Up Half-Down: Pull the top half of your braids into a half-up, half-down style for a casual yet chic look.
  • Braided Crown: Create a braided crown by wrapping your braids around your head and securing them with bobby pins for a whimsical and romantic hairstyle.
  • Messy Bun: Gather your braids into a loose, messy bun at the nape of your neck for a relaxed and effortless vibe.

5. Maintenance Tips for Bohemian Braids

To keep your Bohemia braids looking their best, follow these maintenance tips:

  • Keep Them Clean: Wash your braids regularly with a gentle shampoo to remove dirt and buildup.
  • Moisturize: Hydrate your braids and scalp with a lightweight oil or moisturizing spray to prevent dryness and breakage.
  • Protect at Night: Cover your braids with a satin scarf or bonnet while you sleep to prevent frizz and preserve your style.

6. Pros and Cons of Bohemian Braids

  • Versatility: Bohemia braids can be styled in various ways to suit any occasion.
  • Low Maintenance: Once braided, Bohemia braids require minimal upkeep compared to other hairstyles.
  • Fashion Statement: Make a fashion statement with your braids and express your unique style.
  • Time-Consuming: Depending on the intricacy of the braids, the styling process can be time-consuming.
  • Tension on Hair: Tight braids can cause tension on the scalp and potentially lead to breakage if not done carefully.
  • Maintenance Required: Regular maintenance is necessary to keep braids looking fresh and prevent them from unraveling.

7. Bohemian Braids vs. Other Braid Styles

While Bohemia braids have their unique charm, they're not the only braid style out there. Here's how they stack up against some other popular braid styles:

  • Box Braids: Box braids are typically smaller and more uniform in size compared to Bohemia braids, offering a sleek and polished look.
  • Cornrows: Cornrows involve braiding the hair close to the scalp in neat, straight lines, often creating intricate patterns and designs.
  • French Braids: French braids are woven close to the scalp and gradually incorporate more hair as you braid down the length, resulting in a tight and secure style.

8. Celebrities Rocking Bohemian Braids

Celebrities are often at the forefront of fashion trends, and Bohemia braids are no exception. Here are a few famous faces who've been spotted rocking this bohemian hairstyle:

  • Beyoncé: The queen bee herself has been known to sport Bohemia braids on and off the stage, adding her own glamorous twist to the look.
  • Zendaya: Actress and style icon Zendaya has been photographed rocking Bohemia braids on numerous occasions, proving just how versatile and chic this hairstyle can be.
  • Rihanna: Singer and fashion mogul Rihanna has experimented with Bohemia braids in various lengths and colors, showcasing their adaptability to different hair types and personal styles.

9. DIY vs. Professional Braiding: Which is Better?

When it comes to getting Bohemia braids, you have two options: DIY or enlist the help of a professional braider. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Cost-Effective: DIY braiding can save you money compared to visiting a salon.
  • Creative Control: You have full control over the styling process and can customize your braids to your liking.
  • Time-Consuming: Braiding your own hair can be time-consuming, especially if you're new to the process.

Professional Braiding:

  • Expertise: Professional braiders have the skills and experience to create flawless braided styles.
  • Time-Saving: Visiting a salon can save you time and effort, especially for intricate braiding styles

Boho Braids Are TikTok's Favorite Protective Hairstyle

By Annie Blay

side by side image of Brandy in pick and drop braids and Vick Hope in boho braids

You know that hairstyle that you loved back in the day… and never thought would come back in style? Mine is pick-and-drop braids — with micro base braids on the crown that go down about three inches and then cascade into loose waves or bouncy curls. Stars like Beyoncé and Brandy popularized the look back in the '90s and early 2000s, and much to my surprise, the style is trending again — but with a modern twist.

On TikTok , the style is called boho braids and goddess braids interchangeably, with those hashtags racking in nearly 38 million and 223 million views respectively. This wispy take on box braids is essentially an upgrade on a classic Black protective hairstyle that immediately caught the attention of those who grew up in the '90s. Much like pick-and-drop braids of the past, you'll see the 2023 version starts with a base of braids, but the length is even longer than before. In the past, the style was executed with synthetic hair (mainly because that's what was widely available), but that comes with its fair share of knotting and matting. Now, stylists prefer using human hair which can be "more versatile and less harsh for this style," says Los Angeles-based hairstylist  Larry Sims .

Picture of Beyonce wearing pickanddrop braids

It's often hard to pinpoint where trends begin, but "Zoë Kravitz was an inspiration for a lot of us to go back to this style," says London-based hairstylist and braider  Jacinta Rutana . And, in the past year, celebrities like former first lady  Michelle Obama and Jordyn Woods have put their own twist on the free-spirited style.

Zoe Kravitz wearing boho braids

Bicoastal travel braider  Shanna St. Cyr says boho braids are her most requested style lately, in both New York and Los Angeles. The reason she thinks it's so popular among her clients: "You can get a weave look without an actual weave install." That cuts down on cost and allows you to experiment with various hairstyles that would be otherwise difficult to wear with a weave.

Here, is more on how the style has evolved and what to know if you plan on trying boho braids for yourself.

  • Larry Sims is a Los Angeles-based hairstylist and the co-founder of  Flawless by Gabrielle Union
  • Jacinta Rutana is a London-based hairstylist and braider
  • Shanna St. Cyr of Tropix Braids is a travel braider who works in Los Angeles and New York City

How Boho Braids Are Different From Pick-and-Drop Braids

Boho braids have taken the foundation of pick-and-drop braids and elevated the style. The biggest change: the length of the base braids. pick-and-drop braids were usually about three inches long, with loose waves or curls at the ends of the braids. The idea was to have the braids all but hidden at the crown of the head, creating the illusion that the hair was growing out of the scalp. Boho braids, on the other hand, put more emphasis on the braids instead of trying to hide them. The loose curls are incorporated throughout the braids at different lengths, which makes for an even blend of braids and tendrils.

And, before, stars wore the style in waves and even long, straight wispy layers (Take Beyoncé's blonde pick-and-drop hairstyle, seen above, circa 2001). Now the texture is almost always curly, which blends with the braids more easily than straight pieces would.

Boho braids also mainly use human hair whereas pick-and-drop featured synthetic hair. These braids are one of the most popular ways to get flowing hair extensions that look natural. And by using human hair, there is newfound versatility. The look can be styled with heat and there is less matting, says Sims. If you're partial to synthetic hair, Runata says you can still use it, but it works best in just the braids, and not the loose hair.

What to Know Before You Get Boho Braids

Put the comb down. Sorry to break any DIY hearts, but this protective style should be reserved for the salon. Rutana explains the look requires a high skill level: "I use a knotless technique, so it's easy on your natural hair to ensure there’s not as much breakage," she explains, which isn't easy to do on yourself. Working with human hair (which is recommended for this style) "can be challenging due to the softer texture of the hair which makes it hard to grip," says Rutana, so it's best to leave it to a professional.

It's best to consult with your stylist to establish if they will provide the hair or if you need to source it ahead of your appointment. Many salons don't provide hair extensions, so oftentimes, you'll need to visit your local beauty supply store ahead of time. Stylists can usually advise on what hair to buy — Runata loves Bohotress braiding hair which is exclusively available online in the U.K.

How to Prep Your Hair for Boho Braids

Plan to arrive at your appointment with washed and blow-dried hair. Some stylists offer this service but if it's unavailable, a simple shampoo to cleanse your hair and scalp, followed by a conditioning treatment to moisturize, and a thorough blow dry is all you need.

How to Maintain Boho Braids

A weekly refresh will prolong the wear of boho braids. Runata recommends combining a mixture of water and leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle and misting the braids at least once a week. Additionally, it’s important to wrap your hair with a scarf and sleep in a  bonnet to preserve the style. To keep the style looking its best, Runata recommends a touch-up after four weeks.

The Average Cost of Boho Braids

The overall cost ranges from $300 to $600, on average. There are three main factors: the location of your salon, the price of the hair extensions, and how long and thick you want the braids. To give you an idea, St. Cyr charges $695 for small boho braids with hair included and $485 for the same style in medium width. Most salons and braiders have a standard length (usually falling right above the tailbone), so if you want braids any longer than that, chances are you’ll be paying extra.

The price is steep, but the braids do last when they are done well. Runtata says her clients keep the style in for about six to eight weeks depending on their hair type and if the extensions are reusable.

30 Glamorous Boho Braids Styles for Authentic Beauty

You probably must have seen or heard about the whimsy, cute, and stylish boho braids. Discover what they are and how to do bohemian braids, and also see creative and trending boho braids hairstyles you can try for your next look.

What Are Bohemian Braids

Bohemian braids, also known as boho braids or gypsy braids, are a type of braided hairstyle featuring classic box braids with curly tresses sticking out from the braids. Some bohemian braids hairstyles have cornrows added for extra zing.

The Difference Between Bohemian Braids, Gypsy Braids, Boho Braids, and Goddess Braids

It may please you to know that these are all the same hairstyle. They all basically feature box braids with curly hair added at strategic places along the length of the braids. So, there’s really no significant difference. Goddess braids also have several other types, that differ from classic boho braids.

How to Do Bohemian Braids

You make boho braids on natural hair that has been washed clean. Use a rat tail comb to part your hair into small sections. Apply edge control product to sleek down your hair and make the lines neat. Braid each individual section to about half an inch long, and then attach a portion of straight braiding hair. Continue braiding until you get your preferred length. Now, fix portions of curly braiding hair at different places along the length of the braids you’ve made.

In case you’re wondering what hair to use for your bohemian box braids, you’ll need pre-stretched braiding hair for your box braids and pre-stretched curly braiding hair for the curly part.

How many packs of hair you’ll need depends on the length, size, and style of the bohemian braids you intend to make. You may need up to 6 – 8 packs of braiding hair and 2 – 3 packs of curly braiding hair.

How Long Do Bohemian Box Braids Last?

With proper care and maintenance, your bohemian braids can last up to 6 weeks.

How to Take Care of Bohemian Braids

Maintain your normal hair wash routine if you will be wearing your braids for long. Alternatively, you can keep your scalp clean with dry shampoo or cleanse with apple cider vinegar. A clean scalp is essential for the beauty of your boho braids.

Use edge control products and mousse to control new growth, tangles, and flyaways, and keep your braids looking brand new.

Always remember to cover your braids at bedtime with a silk bonnet or scarf.

Boho Braids Are Back & Better Than Ever

A new era for the protective style.

boho braids

Much more than a protective style , knotless braids have become a style statement completely in a lane of their own. Whether it’s jumbo braids with slick edges, French curled, or micro-mini , the simple braiding technique has brought a range of styles coveted by celebrities and popularized by social media. However as some trending looks come and go, some looks, such as bohemian (boho) braids, have stood the test of time, by taking a more re-inventive approach to viral longevity.

While boho braids have been around since the early 2000s — think Beyoncé back in her Destiny’s Child days or Alicia Keys circa 2009 — they’ve recently made a comeback with a new twist. Today’s styles have free-flowing dantiy tendrils attached to the braids for a wet and wavy look that is root to tip. With the ringlets dispersed throughout the braids, the effect is ethereal and likened to a mermaid. And the eye-catching look has taken off on social media at lightning speed.

Taking a quick look through Instagram, TikTok, or your surroundings and you’ll likely notice one or more heads sporting this now viral look. So, just how did these new boho braids resurface and take over as the latest in-demand style?

Beyonce Knowles wearing boho braids.

LA-based braider Vanese Williams, known by Youxvanese on social media, tells TZR it likely began with actress and fashion darling, Zoë Kravitz. “Four years ago, boho braids just weren’t as popular as say jumbo knotless styles,” she says. In 2017, Kravitz made waves as a yoga-loving stepmom in HBO’s hit Big Little Lies sporting her soon-to-be signature boho braids. Following its ending, she then starred in the Hulu series High Fidelity , and again, captivated the internet with her look.

“Zoë really set the tone for the style to make its way back to the mainstream,” Williams says. And with that revival, the braider has seen a shift to today’s version of bohemian braids.

The New Boho Braids

Unlike the OG style, the new look relies heavily on knotless braids. While the free-flowing hair previously began mid-braid to create the illusion of a full head of wavy hair, today’s style features a full length braid with wavy ends and loose tendrils placed throughout. The result is a cascading blend of braids and curls that resembles natural beach waves and braids.

What Kind Of Hair Is Used For Boho Braids?

Boho braids require a particular type of hair in order to achieve the desired look. For longevity and overall effect, Williams suggests using two different types of hair: a weft of human hair with a wavy texture for the tendrils and a curly or wavy textured hair meant for braiding. Though more affordable, synthetic hair tends to tangle easily and requires more work to maintain the curls. “You want the braids to look breezy, natural, and light, and human hair gives you all of that without having to worry about the hair getting matted and messy,” she says.

How To Maintain Boho Braids At Home

If you do choose to go with synthetic hair, Williams advises against getting the braids wet and staying away from chemicals such as chlorine and bleach. “The other really important thing with synthetic hair is keeping the braids separated to avoid them from tangling,” she says. For human hair, the maintenance is more dependent on the curl pattern of the hair. Curlier hair will require you to detangle more regularly than a body wave texture, which can maintain its pattern with a regular moisturizing routine.

How Long Do Boho Braids Last?

Despite the loose tendrils, boho braids can last up to six weeks with the right upkeep. Keeping them moisturized and covered at night as recommended by New York-based braider Shamicka Williams is the best way to maintain the look. Whether using a homemade mixture of conditioner and water or a refreshing spray, it’s important to moisturize the actual braids themselves. Remember that since the tendrils are (likely) human hair, they should be treated as such. And for longer styles, use a large bonnet to ensure the braids, curls and all, are completely covered at night.

Boho braids are TikTok's favourite protective hairstyle – and Tyla's honey blonde take is jaw-dropping

Boho Braids Are TikTok's Favourite Protective Hairstyle Tyla's Honey Blonde Take Is JawDropping

You know that hairstyle that you loved back in the day and never thought would come back in style? Mine are boho braids, otherwise known as pick-and-drop braids. If you're unfamiliar, they're micro base braids at the crown, which cascade into loose waves or bouncy curls from around three inches down. Stars like Beyoncé and Brandy popularised the look back in the '90s and early 2000s, and much to my surprise, the style is trending again — but with a modern twist.

Our latest crush for this look is Tyla. After hands-down winning the Met Gala where she looked like a literal sculpture with a Balmain gown made of sand and wet-look cropped wavy hair, she's thrown a new bingo card into the mix with an entire transformation just days later. The singer posted an Instagram photo showing a new set of honey blonde boho braids tumbling from a loosely piled updo. It's unclear whether the photo is a throwback or recent, but it's proof once again that Tyla does not put a foot wrong.

On TikTok , the style is called boho braids and goddess braids interchangeably, with those hashtags racking up nearly 42.9 million and 717.5 million views respectively. This wispy take on box braids is essentially an upgrade on a classic Black protective hairstyle that immediately caught the attention of those who grew up in the '90s.

Much like pick-and-drop braids of the past, you'll see the modern version starts with a base of braids – but the length is even longer than before. In the past, the style was executed with synthetic hair (mainly because that's what was widely available), but that comes with its fair share of knotting and matting. Now, stylists prefer using human hair, which can be “more versatile and less harsh for this style,” says hairstylist  Larry Sims .

It's often hard to pinpoint where trends begin, but: “Zoë Kravitz was an inspiration for a lot of us to go back to this style,” says London-based hairstylist and braider  Jacinta Rutana . And in the past year or two, celebrities like former first lady  Michelle Obama and Jordyn Woods have put their own twist on the free-spirited style.

Travel braider  Shanna St. Cyr says boho braids are her most requested style lately. The reason she thinks it's so popular among her clients? “You can get a weave look without an actual weave install.” That cuts down on cost and allows you to experiment with various hairstyles that would be otherwise difficult to wear with a weave.

Here's how the style has evolved and what to know if you plan on trying boho braids for yourself.

  • Jacinta Rutana is a London-based hairstylist and braider
  • Shanna St. Cyr of Tropix Braids is a travel braider

Boho Braids Are TikTok's Favourite Protective Hairstyle Tyla's Honey Blonde Take Is JawDropping

Before, stars wore the style in waves and even long, straight wispy layers (Beyoncé was the Queen of this, circa 2003). Now the texture is almost always curly, which blends with the braids more easily than straight pieces would.

Boho braids also mainly use human hair, whereas pick-and-drop featured synthetic hair. These braids are one of the most popular ways to get flowing hair extensions that look natural. And by using human hair, there is newfound versatility. According to Sims, the look can be styled with heat and there is less matting. If you're partial to synthetic hair, Runata says you can still use it, but it works best in just the braids, and not the loose hair.

If you want a really professional finish and to avoid too much hair breakage, this protective style should be reserved for the salon. Rutana explains the look requires a high skill level. “I use a knotless technique, so it's easy on your natural hair to ensure there’s not as much breakage,” she says, which isn't easy to do on yourself.

Working with human hair (which is recommended for this style) “can be challenging due to the softer texture of the hair which makes it hard to grip,” says Rutana, so if you're looking for an impeccable finish on the first go, it's probably best to leave it to a professional.

It's also a good idea to consult with your stylist to establish if they will provide the hair or if you need to source it ahead of your appointment. Many salons don't provide hair extensions, so oftentimes, you'll need to visit your local beauty supply store ahead of time. Stylists can usually advise on what hair to buy — Runata loves Bohotress braiding hair which is exclusively available online in the UK.

Whether your hair is in its natural state or has a treatment like a relaxer or texture release, you still want to arrive at your appointment with washed and blow-dried hair. Some stylists offer this service – but if it's unavailable, a simple shampoo to cleanse your hair and scalp followed by a conditioning treatment to moisturise and a thorough blow dry is all you need.

Before braiding, do make sure your hair is thoroughly dried to prevent mould or mildew. Gently detangle it with a wide-tooth comb or fingers to remove any knots. Consider stretching your hair using a blow dryer on low heat or braiding it overnight to reduce shrinkage, to make it easier to work with. It's also recommended you apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner all over, to protect the hair through all the manipulation and tension from the braiding.

Maintaining the silkiness and shine of the boho braids, especially when using human hair, involves a combination of proper care and attention. A weekly refresh should suffice in prolonging the wear of boho braids.

To keep your braids looking their best, wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet at night to minimise friction and prevent frizz. Apply a light hair oil or serum to the braids to maintain shine and keep the hair moisturised. Avoid much further manipulation, as constant touching can lead to fraying and loss of shine.

Runata recommends combining a mixture of water and leave-in conditioner in a spray bottle and misting the braids at least once a week. When washing, dilute sulfate-free shampoo in water, apply the mixture to the scalp, and gently cleanse without disturbing the braids.

For synthetic braids, use a mild shampoo and cold water to wash, and let it air dry to maintain texture. To prolong the life of synthetic hair, avoid excessive heat styling and store your braids in a loose twist-out, wrapping them in a silk or satin scarf before bed. To keep the style looking its best, Runata recommends a touch-up after four weeks.

Step 1: Prepare Your Hair

  • Make sure your hair is clean and free of tangles. If you have thick or long hair, you can braid it into cornrows close to your scalp to create a neat foundation for the box braids.

Step 2: Section Your Hair

  • Use your rat-tail comb to create a part where you want your first box braid to begin. This could be a middle part, a side part, or any other desired pattern.

Step 3: Incorporate Your Extensions

  • Take a small section of your natural hair and combine it with a strand of the braiding hair extension. Make sure they are of equal length.
  • Use an elastic band to secure both your natural hair and the extension hair together at the roots.

Step 4: Start Braiding

  • Divide the combined strands (your natural hair and extension hair) into three equal parts to begin the braid.
  • Start braiding in the traditional three-strand style: cross the right section over the middle section, then the left section over the middle section.
  • Continue braiding until you reach the end of the extension hair.

Step 5: Add Hair Accessories (Optional)

  • If you’d like to personalize your boho box braids, you can thread beads or ribbons onto the extension hair before you start braiding. This adds a fun and creative touch to your style.

Step 6: Secure the End

  • When you’ve reached the end of the extension hair, secure it with a hair tie or elastic band. Make sure it’s tightly fastened to prevent the braid from unraveling.

Step 7: Repeat

  • Repeat steps 3 to 6 for each section of hair you want to braid. You can create as many boho box braids as you like, all over your head.

Step 8: Style and Accessorize

  • Once you’ve finished braiding, you can style your boho box braids however you like. You can leave them hanging loose, gather them into a braided ponytail, or create buns or twists.

Step 9: Set the Style

  • Use a little alcohol-free hair spray or hair wax to help your boho box braids hold their shape and stay in place throughout the day.

Now you have fabulous boho box braids that showcase your unique style and creativity. Enjoy your new look and have fun experimenting with different hairstyles!

Over To You

Boho braids encapsulate the essence of effortless elegance, offering a harmonious blend of relaxed charm and refined beauty. Their versatility, adaptability, and ability to celebrate individuality make them a standout choice for those who seek a unique and alluring hairstyle.

Boho Braids Hairstyles & How to do Bohemian Knotless Braids

Braiding , as an art form , has been woven into the fabric of human history for millennia. From the ancient civilizations of Africa to the tribal communities of Native America, braids have been more than just a hairstyle; they’ve been a symbol of identity , status, and cultural pride . Among the myriad of braid styles that have emerged over the centuries, boho braids, with their free-spirited and eclectic vibe, have carved a unique niche for themselves.

What Are Boho Braids?

Boho braids, short for bohemian braids, are not just a hairstyle but a statement . They are characterized by their relaxed, free-flowing patterns, often interspersed with curly or wavy hair bits. Unlike the structured look of traditional braids, boho braids embrace imperfections, making each braid unique.

From Traditional to Bohemian Knotless

Traditional braids, with their tight, uniform patterns, have long been a staple in many cultures. However, as the world became a global village, there was a fusion of styles, leading to the birth of bohemian braids.

These braids, often characterized by their loose, carefree patterns, became synonymous with the bohemian lifestyle – one that values freedom , nature , and artistic expression . The latest innovation in this lineage is the bohemian knotless braid, which offers a more natural and seamless look, eliminating the small knot at the base of traditional braids.

Boho Braids, Bohemian Braids, and Goddess Braids

While the terms might seem distinct, they often overlap in the world of hairstyling . Bohemian braids, as mentioned, are the free-spirited cousins of traditional braids. Goddess braids, on the other hand , are essentially bohemian braids but with a touch of royalty.

They often feature curly hair bits added along the length of the braid, giving them a divine , ethereal look. Contrary to some misconceptions , goddess braids are not thick cornrows but are closer in style and spirit to bohemian braids.

Materials and Preparations for Boho Braids

The foundation of a great boho braid is the type of hair used. While synthetic hair is more affordable and offers a wide range of colors, it tends to tangle easily and requires more maintenance. Human hair, on the other hand, gives boho braids a natural, breezy look and feel. It’s easier to manage and offers longevity , especially if you’re aiming for a look that lasts up to six weeks.

Products needed to Make Boho Braids

  • Shine n Jam : This product is essential for sleeking down hair in parted sections, taming flyaways, and ensuring a good grip during the braiding process.
  • Mousse : A finishing touch, mousse helps in setting the braids, adding shine, and ensuring the curly bits retain their bounce.
  • Rat Tail Comb : An indispensable tool, the rat tail comb helps in parting the hair accurately, ensuring uniformity in the braids.

With the right materials and preparations, boho braids can be a delightful expression of one’s personality, blending tradition with modern aesthetics .

Step-by-Step Guide to Bohemian Knotless Braids

Before diving into the braiding process, it’s essential to ensure your hair is in the best condition. Start by cleaning your hair thoroughly using a gentle shampoo, ensuring all residues are washed out. After cleaning, stretching the hair is crucial. This process involves gently pulling the hair to elongate its natural curl pattern, making it easier to braid. Lastly, ensure your hair is free from any products. This clean slate ensures the products you use during braiding adhere well and give the desired results.

Choosing Your Parting Style

The beauty of bohemian knotless braids lies in their versatility . Depending on your personal style and face shape, you can opt for various parting options:

  • Box Braids Parts : This classic style involves parting the hair into neat squares, giving a symmetrical look.
  • Triangle Parts : For a more edgy and modern look, triangle parts are an excellent choice.
  • Freestyle Parting : For those who prefer a more natural and organic look, freestyle parting allows for random sections without a specific shape.

How to do Boho Braids

The journey from the base of your head to the tip of the braid is a meticulous process:

  • Prep your hair by adding texture. You can achieve this by using a texturizing spray, dry shampoo, or sea salt spray to give your hair some grip and volume .
  • Part your hair in the desired direction, whether it’s a middle part, a side part, or no part at all. This will determine the placement of your braids.
  • Take a small section of hair near the front of your head, close to the part, and divide it into three equal strands.
  • Begin braiding the strands by crossing the outer strands over the middle strand, one at a time, to create a regular three-strand braid.
  • As you continue braiding, incorporate additional small sections of hair from the sides to create an accent braid.
  • Continue braiding until you reach the desired length or until you’ve incorporated all the hair on that side.
  • Secure the end of the braid with a hair elastic or a decorative hair accessory.
  • Repeat the process on the other side of your head, creating a symmetrical or asymmetrical look, depending on your preference.

Finishing with Flair

Once all braids are in place, it’s time for the finishing touches:

  • Mousse Application : A generous application of mousse helps set the braids, ensuring they retain their shape and shine.
  • Laying Baby Hairs : For a polished look, use a fine-toothed comb or brush to lay the baby hairs along the hairline. This step gives a neat appearance and frames the face beautifully.

How can I enhance the Boho vibe of my braids?

Products Needed

  • Texturizing spray, dry shampoo, or sea salt spray
  • Hair elastic or hair tie
  • Hair clips or bobby pins (optional, for sectioning)
  • Boho-inspired hair accessories like feathers, beads, flowers , or ribbons (optional)

To enhance the boho vibe of your braids, consider these steps:

  • Prep your hair by applying a texturizing spray, dry shampoo, or sea salt spray to add texture and grip.
  • Create a middle part, a side part, or no part at all, depending on your preferred style.
  • Gently pull on the sides of the braids to loosen them and create a soft, undone look.
  • If desired, curl or wave the remaining loose hair using a curling iron or heatless curling method for added texture and dimension.
  • Enhance the boho vibe by adding bohemian-inspired accessories like feathers, beads, flowers, or ribbons to the braids.
  • Set your style with hairspray for extra hold and longevity.

How-To Remove Boho Braids

To remove boho braids, follow these steps:

  • Carefully remove any hair accessories or elastics used to secure the braids.
  • Starting from the ends, gently unravel the braids by undoing the braiding pattern.
  • Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle any knots or tangles.
  • Wash and condition your hair as usual to nourish and hydrate your strands.
  • Style your hair in a new desired look or repeat the boho braids if you wish.

Boho Braids on Natural Hair

Natural hair , with its unique texture and volume, offers a distinct charm when styled into boho braids. The interplay of natural curls with the added curly bits gives an authentic and organic look, making it a favorite for those who prefer a closer-to-nature appearance.

How to Make Boho Braids Without Extensions

For those blessed with voluminous hair, boho braids can be achieved without the need for extensions. The process remains largely the same, with the natural hair providing the volume and length. The key is to ensure the hair is well-moisturized and stretched to make the braiding process smooth.

Caring for Natural Boho Braids

Natural hair requires tender love and care , especially when styled:

  • Moisturizing : Ensure the braids and scalp are regularly moisturized to prevent breakage and itching .
  • Refreshing the Look : Over time, the natural curly bits might lose their bounce. A light spritz of water followed by mousse application can refresh the curls, making them spring back to life .

Bohemian Braids with a Twist: The Crochet Method

While the feed-in method has been the traditional way of achieving boho braids, the crochet method offers an alternative approach, especially for those who might find the feed-in technique challenging. The primary difference lies in the process:

  • Feed-in Method : This involves starting with a small section of one’s natural hair and gradually feeding in extensions to achieve the desired thickness and length.
  • Crochet Method : Here, the entire head is first braided into cornrows. Then, using a crochet needle, extensions are looped and secured onto the cornrows, giving the appearance of individual braids.

How to Make Boho Braids Using the Crochet Method

  • Cornrow Preparation : Begin by parting the hair and braiding it into neat cornrows. This forms the base onto which the extensions will be attached.
  • Looping in the Extensions : Using a crochet needle, loop the extensions through the cornrows. Ensure they are securely attached.
  • Adding the Boho Touch : Once all extensions are in place, integrate the curly bits at intervals, just as you would with the feed-in method.

Human Hair in Boho Braids

Human hair, with its natural texture, shine, and movement, offers several advantages over synthetic alternatives:

  • Natural Appearance : Human hair blends seamlessly with one’s natural hair, offering a more authentic look.
  • Ease of Maintenance : Unlike synthetic hair, which can tangle easily, human hair is easier to manage and style.
  • Versatility : Human hair can be dyed, curled, straightened, and styled in various ways without the risk of damage.

How to Make Boho Braids with Human Hair

  • Preparation : Start by selecting high-quality human hair extensions . Ensure they match your hair’s texture and color for a seamless blend.
  • Braiding Process : As you braid, feed in the human hair extensions just as you would with synthetic ones. The process remains largely the same.
  • Adding Curly Bits : For the signature boho touch, integrate curly sections of human hair at intervals. This gives the braids their unique bohemian appearance.

Caring for Synthetic vs. Human Hair Boho Braids

While boho braids are a relatively low-maintenance hairstyle, the type of hair used dictates the care routine:

Synthetic Hair:

  • Avoid Water : It’s best to avoid getting synthetic braids wet, especially in chlorinated pools.
  • Prevent Tangling : Regularly separate the braids to prevent them from tangling. Using a light hair oil can also reduce friction.

Human Hair:

  • Regular Moisturizing : Just like natural hair, human hair extensions need moisture. Use a light hair spray or oil to keep them hydrated.
  • Gentle Styling : While human hair is versatile , it’s essential to be gentle. Avoid excessive heat and harsh styling products.

Ensuring Longevity and Avoiding Tangling

For boho braids to retain their beauty, a few simple steps can make a world of difference:

  • Night Routine : Wear a silk or satin scarf or bonnet to bed. This reduces friction and prevents tangling.
  • Regular Maintenance : Every few days, inspect the braids for any signs of tangling or frizz and address them promptly.
  • Refreshing the Look : Over time, the curly bits might lose their bounce. A light spritz of water followed by mousse can rejuvenate them.

Everything you need to know about boho braids and all the inspo

Boho braids are a carefree and relaxed member of the braid family, featuring single braids with the addition of curly or wavy hair in the lengths for an 'undone' finish. Similar to Goddess braids or pick-and-drop, boho braids differ as the wavy pieces are worked in from higher up, whereas those styles tend to have them braided in from towards the ends. But as anyone acquainted with braiding will tell you... names can get a little malleable! That's why inspo pics are so essential, and luckily for you we've rounded up a bumper stack to start with.

But before we get into those, we spoke to Deborah Johnson, co-owner of SIMPLY Gorgeous Afro Hair Salon in London, to find out everything you need to know about boho braids.

How do you create boho braids?

"They're achieved by braiding to your desired point (around the crown, ear or chin), and then feeding in curly or wavy hair at one point or more throughout that single braid. The finished result, depending on the amount of curly/wavy hair you use, is a fuller and more voluminous look."

The logistics of boho braids

Hair needed: "Human hair can be quite expensive so we suggest using synthetic hair for the main braid and then using human hair for the feed-in wavy sections. Human hair tends to be best as it looks more natural when it comes to the wavy finish."

Time: "It really varies depending on how full you want your overall look but for us they can take anywhere from 3-6 hours depending on the braid thickness."

Price: "Each salon is different but we tend to change around £110-£200 depending on the thickness and length wanted."

How long have boho braids been popular?

"It's hard to pinpoint exactly where this style originated as various sources state that it can be found as far and wide as the Fula Tribe in Western Africa, Ancient Egypt and amongst Native American Tribes. However we've definitely started seeing a rise of requests for it at the salon from around 2018.

How to care for boho braids and prevent tangling

"We always suggest not keeping any protective style in for no longer than 8 weeks maximum. In order to have your boho braids last as long as possible ensure that they are wrapped up or put into a large braid before you go to sleep to prevent friction that can lead to knotting. Once a week wet the braids and apply a leave-in moisturiser, oil and comb through the strands with a wide tooth comb to separate any and allow to air dry."

As anyone acquainted with braiding will tell you... names can get a little malleable! That's why inspo pics are so essential, and lucky for you, we've rounded up a bumper stack to start with.

Corkscrew curl boho braids

While looser curls or waves are commonly used, actress Marsai Martin has gone for these gorgeous corkscrew curl extensions which changes the result and also gives the illusion it could well be her hair. Like, we know it's not, but our brain is happier to go along with it.

Subtle Boho Braids

Ryan again. But she really kills it. Here very minimal strands of curly hair have been added in, and in small pieces. This gives a really naturally distressed impression (God do we wish this is how braids actually looked when dishevelled).

Half-head Cornrows & Boho Braids (Left)

A simple half-head of cornrows also looks gorgeous melting into boho braids at the back, as seen on Stella from Flo. We included the rest of the band too in the pick as Renée (centre) is sporting boho locs while Jorja (right) has some classic boho braids with wavy pieces.

Boho Braid Space Buns

There are so many fun ways to style your boho braids too. The loose strands really add to updos like Marsai's boho braid space buns.

Bohemian braids, also known as boho braids or gypsy braids , have become an iconic style in recent years. This unique braided hairstyle features classic box braids combined with curly "Tresses", which provide an extra zing.

What Are Bohemian Braids

Bohemian braids were originally popularized by musicians and artists who embraced a free-spirited lifestyle in the 70s and 80s. Even though these styles originated years ago, this hairstyle still looks stylish and modern today.

Bohemian braids can be worn for all occasions, from a formal event to being casual at the beach. This beautiful style is also the ideal hairstyle for women with naturally curly hair. Natural curls naturally compliment and adhere to bohemian braids, delivering a hairstyle that will surely turn heads.

Pre-stretched braiding hair

Pre-stretched braiding hair

When it comes to bohemian braids, pre-stretched braiding hair is a great choice to achieve the perfect style. It looks just like real human hair, yet it is made of synthetic fibers that are tailored to withstand high temperatures and humidity levels.

Human hair extensions

bulk human hair extensions

The better choice is  human hair extensions  and  bulk human hair without weft . They are made of real human hair and offer a natural look.

For an even more exceptional look, you can add water wave or deep wave hair to your bohemian braids – these types of hairs are easily implemented and lightweight to style whilst managing to give the boho braids some extra bounce and body.

In addition, braided wigs appear in the hair market these years, made of synthetic hair or human hair, you can just wear them as normal wigs, which can save you time from spending time braiding.

How Many Packs of Hair Do I Need to Get Bohemian Box Braids?

How many packs of hair do I need to get Bohemian box braids

Regarding the amount necessary, experiences tell us 6 to 8 packs of pre-stretched braiding hair and 2 to 3 packs of water wave and deep waves hair are usually sufficient, depending, of course, on exact length and size requirements.

The answer is indeed a yes! We hope that it comes as a pleasant surprise when you find out that these hairdos are no different from one another. The one thing in common in all of them is the box braids , with the only difference being the patch of curly hair infused here and there along its length.

Thus, you can say that there is not much of a value gap between them. Apart from this look, goddess braids are also available in various other styles, sparing you from having to settle for those cliched, boho-blighted ones.

Master the Art of Boho Box Braids: Techniques and Tips for Stunning Styles

boho travel braids

What are Boho Braids?

At the core, boho braids represent a fusion between traditional braiding techniques and the free-spirited, eclectic essence of bohemian style. Characterized by their loose, flowing nature, these braids often incorporate elements such as extensions, beads, feathers, and other adornments, making each hairstyle uniquely personal and expressive. Unlike more structured braids, boho braids thrive on creativity and individuality, often resulting in a softer, more relaxed look that embodies the bohemian ethos of beauty and freedom.

Who are Boho Braids for?

Boho braids do not discriminate. They are for anyone drawn to their versatile charm, regardless of age, hair type, or lifestyle. Whether you're a busy professional looking for a low-maintenance hairstyle, a student expressing your artistic side, or someone simply seeking to experiment with a new look, boho braids offer something special. Their adaptability makes them suitable for various occasions, from casual day-outs to more formal events, proving that boho braids can be both a statement of personal style and a practical hairstyle choice.

Benefits of Boho Braids (Versatility, Style, etc.)

Versatility : Boho braids can be styled in numerous ways, from simple three-strand braids to more complex fishtails or updos, making them perfect for any occasion.

Style Expression : They provide a canvas for personal expression through the use of different braiding techniques, extensions, and accessories.

Protective Qualities : Serving as a protective hairstyle, boho braids can help reduce hair breakage and promote length retention by protecting the hair from environmental stressors and manipulation.

Low Maintenance : Once installed, boho braids require minimal upkeep, making them ideal for those with busy lifestyles or those seeking a break from daily hair styling routines.

Comfort and Ease : Especially in warmer climates or during active adventures, boho braids offer a comfortable way to keep hair managed and stylish.

Boho braids are more than just a hairstyle; they're a testament to the individual's journey of self-expression and the universal desire for a versatile, stylish, and low-maintenance look. Through this guide, we aim to explore the rich diversity and creative potential that boho braids offer to anyone willing to embrace their bohemian spirit.

Types of Boho Braids

Boho braids aren't just a hairstyle; they're a vibe. They're about embracing your natural beauty while adding a sprinkle of your unique flair. Whether you're someone who loves a detailed, intricate look or prefers something more understated, there's a boho braid out there with your name on it.

Braided Styles with a Boho Twist

1. Boho Box Braids (with Extensions) : Let's start with the classics - box braids. But imagine giving them a boho twist by mixing in different textures or throwing in some curly extensions for an unexpected pop. It's about creating a look that feels as good as it looks, bringing together the best of both worlds - the traditional and the contemporary.

2. Knotless Boho Braids : Say goodbye to tension and hello to seamless beauty with knotless braids. These are all about the flow, allowing your scalp to breathe while still rocking a full, lush look. Add in some mismatched beads or gold cuffs for that sun-kissed, effortlessly chic vibe that screams beach day, every day.

3. Boho Fishtail Braids : Now, for a touch of romance, the boho fishtail braid is your go-to. It's softer, looser, and all about those wispy, flyaway hairs that frame your face perfectly. This style is like your favorite summer dress - easy, breezy, and beautiful.

Half-up, Half-down Boho Braids: This style is the epitome of boho chic. It's the perfect answer to "I want my hair out of my face but also down." It's versatile, works for any occasion, and gives you the best of both worlds. Add in some tiny braids or a few flowers for that extra touch of whimsy.

Adding Flair to Boho Braids

Boho braids are all about personalization. It's your canvas to get creative with. Threading in some beads, feathers, and hair cuffs can transform your braids from everyday to extraordinary. Imagine walking down the street, and your hair is literally sparkling in the sun, catching eyes and turning heads. That's the power of adding a little flair to your braids.

Getting Boho Braids

Whether you're a DIY queen or prefer the magic touch of a stylist, getting boho braids is a journey of creativity. For those going the DIY route, there's a treasure trove of online tutorials and YouTube channels dedicated to braiding. But if you're looking to sit back and be pampered, finding a stylist who gets your vision is key. Bring inspiration pictures, communicate openly, and get ready to transform your look.

In the world of boho braids, there are endless possibilities to explore. Each style is a statement, a reflection of your personality, and a way to wear your heart on your... well, hair. So embrace the boho braid lifestyle, experiment with different styles, and most importantly, have fun with it.

Getting into boho braids is more than a hair appointment or a DIY project; it’s about stepping into a new version of yourself. It’s for anyone ready to unleash their inner bohemian goddess, whether through the art of self-styling or the hands of a skilled professional.

DIY Braiding

For the fearless, the adventurers, and the creators, DIY braiding is your arena. In today’s world, where learning has no boundaries, mastering the art of boho braids is at your fingertips. With countless online tutorials and YouTube channels, led by passionate stylists eager to share their craft, you can dive deep into the world of braiding at your own pace. It’s about trial and error, laughter, and maybe a few tangles along the way. But the joy of mastering that one braid style you’ve been eyeing? Unbeatable.

Grab your tools —braiding hair, combs, hair ties, and don’t forget the accessories (beads, feathers, you name it). Set up your workspace with good lighting and a mirror, and let’s get braiding. Remember, patience is your best friend here. And as I always say, the messier, the better. It’s boho, after all!

Salon Visit

Now, for those who prefer the expertise of a seasoned stylist, finding the right salon is like finding a new best friend. Start your quest by searching for stylists or salons specializing in braids or, even better, boho braids specifically. Social media platforms are goldmines for this, showcasing stylists’ work and offering a glimpse into their boho braid magic.

Once you’ve found your braid whisperer, make that appointment, but remember, preparation is key. Bring inspiration pictures—yes, those Pinterest boards you’ve been saving for years are finally coming in handy. Communication is everything. Be clear about what you love, any concerns you have, and let your stylist guide you through the process. They might suggest tweaks to suit your face shape or hair type, ensuring your boho braids not only look stunning but feel comfortable and true to you.

Embracing boho braids, whether through DIY or a salon visit, is embarking on a journey of self-expression and creativity. It’s about experimenting with textures, playing with accessories, and ultimately, stepping out with a hairstyle that tells your unique story. So, whether you’re twisting and braiding at home or sitting back in a salon chair, remember to enjoy the ride.

Boho Braid Care

So, you've got your boho braids in, and you're feeling like a million bucks. But the journey doesn't stop here. Keeping those braids looking as good as day one is an art and science, blending practical care with a sprinkle of love. After all, healthy hair is happy hair, and happy hair means you keep turning heads wherever you go.

Washing and Maintaining Braids

First things first, cleanliness is key. But washing braided hair isn't like your typical shampoo routine. You'll want to use a sulfate-free shampoo to keep the braids intact and your scalp happy. Dilute the shampoo with water in a spray bottle for an easy application. Gently massage your scalp and let the mixture glide down the braids. Rinse thoroughly without too much agitation. Remember, gentle is the game's name.

Now, how often should you wash them? It's not a one-size-fits-all answer. Listen to your scalp; if it starts to feel itchy or build-up becomes noticeable, it's time. Typically, every 2 to 3 weeks should do the trick. And don't forget to follow up with a lightweight, leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated without weighing down your braids.

Nighttime Care

Nighttime is when the magic happens, or in this case, when you prevent the magic from unraveling. Protecting your braids at night is crucial. A silk or satin scarf or bonnet will be your braids' best friend, reducing friction and preventing frizz and flyaways. Plus, it helps retain moisture, keeping your hair and scalp from drying out. Consider it your braids' nightly armor against the elements (yes, even your pillow counts as an element).

Moisturizing

Hydration, hydration, hydration. Can't stress it enough. Braids can make it tricky to moisturize your hair the traditional way, but it's not impossible. Invest in a good braid spray or lightweight oil. Spritz or apply directly to the scalp and down the length of the braids a few times a week to keep everything nourished. It's like giving your hair a little spa treatment—it'll thank you by staying vibrant and strong.

Maintaining your boho braids with care and love not only ensures they look stunning for longer but also protects the health of your hair underneath. Because it's not just about looking good—it's about feeling good, knowing you're taking care of your crowning glory in the best way possible. So, embrace the boho braid lifestyle with confidence, armed with the tips and tricks to keep them looking as fabulous as the day you got them.

Styling Boho Braids

Alright, babes, let’s get into it. You’ve got your boho braids in, and they’re looking fire. But how do we take them from just "styled" to "styling"? It’s all about playing, experimenting, and not being afraid to let your braids be as dynamic and versatile as you are.

Dressing Up or Down

Boho braids are your secret weapon to nailing any look, any time. Heading to brunch? Loosen a few braids around your face for that sun-kissed, I-just-woke-up-like-this vibe. Got a date? Twist them into an updo, leave a few tendrils out, and voila, romance is in the air. And for those days you’re feeling extra? Add a bold lip, and let your braids do the talking. Remember, it’s not about the braids adapting to your style; it’s about them amplifying it.

Adding Hair Jewelry

This is where the fun really begins. Think of your braids as the canvas and hair jewelry as your paint. There’s no right or wrong here, only what feels true to you. Beads, rings, shells, and even those cute little charms you found at the flea market last summer—anything goes. Space them out for a subtle sparkle or cluster them for that wow factor. It’s all about making those braids uniquely yours.

And let’s not forget about those festival vibes. A flower here, a feather there, and suddenly you’re not just attending the festival; you’re part of the spectacle. So, make them look, make them stare, and most importantly, make yourself smile every time you catch your reflection.

Tips and Considerations

Boho braids are a journey, an exploration of style, and a testament to your personal flair. But before you set off, a few parting tips from your hair guru (that’s me, babes). Choosing extensions? Think about texture, color, and how they blend with your natural hair. Remember, the goal is seamless. Lifespan? Treat them well, and they’ll be your loyal companions for up to 8 weeks. Taking them down? Be gentle, condition well, and give your natural hair some love before embarking on your next hair adventure.

Boho braids aren’t just a hairstyle; they’re a statement, an attitude, and a way to express the many facets of your personality. They invite creativity, demand attention, and above all, celebrate the individuality of every person who wears them. So, whether you’re dressing them up, adorning them with jewelry, or just letting them be, remember to wear your boho braids with pride, confidence, and a bit of that sparkle.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about how you style your hair; it’s about how it makes you feel. And if I can leave you with one thing, it’s this: Let your boho braids be a reflection of the beautiful, unique, unstoppable force that is you.

And with that, you're not just ready to take on the world; you're ready to make it yours. Keep shining, keep styling, and remember, in the world of hair, the only rule is there are no rules.

From Frizzy to Fab: Top Tips for Taming Your Boho Braids

Bohemian braids, with their whimsical twists and turns, can elevate the simplest ensemble to a style statement. Yet, as many of us have discovered, the line between fabulously boho and frustratingly frizzy can be all too fine. So the question on everyone's lips is, " How can I minimize frizz in my boho braids ?" The answer lies within a treasure trove of tried-and-true techniques and preventative measures that promise to keep your bohemian braids looking as serene and polished as a still lake at dawn.

Embrace the Right Braiding Technique

Choosing the right type of boho braids.

When embarking on your bohemian hair journey, the first step is selecting the right type of braid.  Boho knotless braids are a popular choice for those seeking a seamless transition from natural hair to braid, thereby reducing tension and potential frizz at the roots. These braids are added gradually, resulting in a lighter, more natural-looking weave that’s less prone to frizzing.

The Importance of Professional Braiding

To achieve the sleek look of boho box braids, it's crucial to have them installed professionally. The uniformity of the sections and the consistency of the tension throughout each braid contribute to a smoother finish. Moreover, professionals can seal the ends properly, ensuring that the braid doesn't unravel and become frizzy over time.

Boho knotless braids

The Art of Daily Maintenance

Moisturizing and sealing.

The cornerstone of frizz-free braids is moisture. Just like the richest soils yield the most bountiful harvests, well-nourished braids will maintain their integrity longer. Invest in a hydrating, lightweight spray or a braid-specific leave-in conditioner. Follow up with a natural oil to seal in the moisture, focusing on the length of the braid and paying special attention to the ends, which are most susceptible to dryness and frizz.

Gentle Detangling

Occasional gentle detangling can prevent your braids from developing frizz. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to carefully work through any tangles, starting from the bottom and gradually working your way up to the roots. This method minimizes stress on the hair and helps maintain the smooth texture of your braids.

The Frizz-Fighting Power of Nighttime Care

Wrapping up for the night.

Frizz often strikes under the cloak of night, as we toss and turn against abrasive cotton pillowcases. Counter this by wrapping your braids in a silk or satin scarf before bed. The smooth fabric reduces friction, which is a common culprit for inducing frizz and flyaways. Alternatively, a silk or satin pillowcase can offer similar benefits if headwraps aren't your style.

Wrapping Up Braids for the Night

Loose Updos for Sleeping

Another tip is to loosely tie your braids into a high bun or ponytail. This not only keeps them from getting tangled but also prevents the braids from rubbing against your clothing and bedding, which can cause frizz.

When Frizz Strikes: On-the-Go Solutions

Quick Fixes with Mousse or Gel

Despite our best efforts, sometimes frizz seems inevitable. For quick on-the-go touch-ups, a small amount of mousse or gel can work wonders. Apply it sparingly to the frizzy areas and smooth down with your fingers or a soft brush. These products can help tame flyaways instantly and add a polished look to your braids. The Power of Water

In a pinch, water can be a surprising ally. Lightly dampening your hands and running them over the frizzy parts of your braids can help to temporarily tame them until you're able to apply a more lasting solution.

Advanced Frizz Management

Regular Washing with Diligence

Even braided wigs require regular cleansing to prevent product buildup, which can make hair appear frizzy and lackluster. Use a diluted sulfate-free shampoo and gently massage it into your scalp and braids. Rinse thoroughly and follow with a lightweight conditioner. Never rub your braids vigorously; instead, squeeze the suds through them gently.

Regular Washing braids

Deep Conditioning Treatments

Occasionally, your braids might need a deep conditioning treatment. This can be particularly effective for boho knotless braids, as it can help rejuvenate both the added hair and your natural tresses. Apply a braid-safe deep conditioner and cover with a plastic cap. Sit under a hooded dryer or use a warm towel to allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply, then rinse with cool water to smooth the hair cuticle and add shine.

Styling Strategies to Prevent Frizz

Protective Styling

Incorporating your braids into protective styles such as buns or pinned-up designs can shield them from environmental stressors that lead to frizz. Changing up your style every few days can also prevent tension and stress on the sameareas of your hair, reducing the chances of frizz developing in those areas. Embracing Boho Accessories

Bohemian style is synonymous with accessories. Use silk or satin ribbons, soft fabric headbands, or clips to keep your braids in place and reduce exposure to the elements. These accessories not only add to your boho aesthetic but also help in keeping frizz at bay.

Long-Term Braided Wig Care

Storing Your Braided Wigs

Proper storage is key to extending the life of braided wigs. Keep them on a wig stand or mannequin head to maintain their shape. Ensure they are completely dry before storing to prevent mildew growth, which can cause damage and frizz.

comb to detangle braids

Refreshing Your Wigs

Occasionally, even well-kept braided wigs need a refresh. A light mist of a mixture of water and leave-in conditioner can revive the braids. Gently finger comb to detangle any frizz and let the wig air dry on its stand.

Tackling Extreme Frizz

When to Re-Braid

Understanding when it's time to take out your boho braids and start fresh is crucial. If frizz becomes unmanageable or if the braids have been in for an extended period (usually around 6-8 weeks for real hair, longer for wigs), it's probably time to re-braid. This not only gives you an opportunity to treat and trim your natural hair but also means a fresh, frizz-free start. Professional Re-Braiding Services

For styles like boho box braids, it's often best to return to a professional for re-braiding. They can assess the condition of your hair and the braids, providing you with a frizz-free, precise new set of braids.

Frizz can be the bane of boho braids, turning what should be a carefree hairstyle into a high-maintenance nightmare. However, with the right techniques for installation, daily care, nighttime routines, on-the-go fixes, and long-term maintenance, your boho braids can remain as fabulous as the day they were woven. By understanding the unique needs of your braids, whether they're boho knotless braids, boho box braids, or braided wigs, you can keep frizz at arm's length and enjoy the bohemian chic look to its fullest. Remember, boho braids are more than just a hairstyle; they're a statement of creativity and individuality. With these top tips for taming your braids, you can ensure that your statement is always smooth, sleek, and stylish. So go forth and rock those boho braids with confidence, knowing that you have the knowledge and tools to keep frizz firmly in check.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

boho travel braids

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

boho travel braids

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

boho travel braids

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

boho travel braids

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

boho travel braids

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

boho travel braids

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

boho travel braids

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
