The country's best-preserved 19th-century seashore resort, Cape May is a registered National Historic Landmark with over 600 Victorian-era houses in its 30-block downtown area. These charming summer cottages were designed with covered porches for enjoying the sea breezes, and decorative elements such as "gingerbread" trim, "wedding cake" details, turrets, and gables.

Cape May Point State Park is a protected stretch of shoreline, sand dunes, coastal marshland, ponds, and forest habitat with an environmental center and museum. The park's main attraction is the Cape May Lighthouse , built in 1859. Visitors may climb (199 steps) to the top of the lighthouse tower to admire sweeping panoramas of the Atlantic coastline and the Delaware Bay.

Several hiking trails wind through the park, affording a chance to spot wildlife or migrating birds. From both the Monarch Trail and Plover Trail, visitors can see the World War II Gun Battery (bunker) on the beach.

Near Cape May Point about a five-minute drive from the Cape May Lighthouse is the World War II Lookout Tower , which played an important role in defending the country from invasion during the Second World War. The tower was built in 1942 as one of 15 coastal defense towers in New Jersey.

This tourist site includes a Visitors' Orientation Center and a museum, which presents military history-themed exhibits, interpretive panels along the boardwalk that provide historical insights, and a memorial paying tribute to war veterans. The Cape May Point Museum Shop sells maritime-themed souvenirs.

The Harriet Tubman Museum pays tribute to the courage of American hero and abolitionist Harriet Tubman. In addition, the museum pays tribute to the history of the African American community and the abolitionist movement in Cape May.

In the early 1850s, Harriet Tubman made her way to Cape May, where she worked as a cook during the summers. She used her earnings in Cape May to fund Underground Railroad voyages for her family. This began her career as a freedom fighter, leading dozens of other Black people to liberty in Canada.

The Harriet Tubman Museum is found in a historic neighborhood where the abolitionist movement thrived in the years before the Civil War. Across the street is the former summer home of Stephen Smith, founder of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society and one of the wealthiest Black men in the country in the 19th century.

Next to the Stephen Smith House stands the Banneker House, which was an upscale hotel for free Black people and a gathering place for abolitionists.

The museum is open Friday through Sunday, with guided tours available on the hour. Museum capacity is limited; booking tickets in advance is recommended.

Staying at one of Cape May's charming historic accommodations is a special experience. Many of the town's Victorian summer cottages have been converted to luxurious bed-and-breakfast hotels.

Cape May B&Bs allow visitors to experience a seaside retreat of the Victorian-era upper class. Guest rooms are outfitted with four-poster beds, vintage floral wallpaper, and antique furniture. Breakfasts are served in elegant dining rooms, for a glimpse of what life was like for high society holiday-goers in the 19th century.

Cape May played an important role in the anti-slavery movement before the Civil War. During the 1840s and 1850s, the town was a meeting place for leading Philadelphia abolitionists and Underground Railroad organizers.

The Underground Railroad Trolley Tour brings to life the harrowing stories of the Underground Railroad. The tour points out landmarks that were key to emancipating slaves, such as the historic home of Stephen Smith, who was a founder of the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, and the Cape May Lighthouse, which helped freedom seekers find their way across the Delaware Bay.

The Fisherman's Wharf of Cape May, Schellenger's Landing gives tourists a taste of the town's seafaring past. Schellenger's Landing has several marinas: South Jersey Marina, Utsch's Marina, and Miss Chris Marina.

A great spot for setting off on recreational fishing and boating adventures, the marinas at Schellenger's Landing have many shops that sell fishing gear and rent out kayaks and paddleboards. At Utsch's Marina and Miss Chris Marina, anglers can embark on sportfishing charters and deep-sea fishing trips. Bird-watching boat cruises leave from Miss Chris Marina. Schellenger's Landing is one of the best places to visit in Cape May for a seafood meal.

Whales and dolphins can be spotted in the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay, not too far (within 10 miles) from the Cape May coastline. It's a thrilling experience to see these amazing sea mammals up close, while sailing through the deep blue waters.

Several local companies provide whale-watching cruises. Passengers have a chance to see humpback whales, finback whales, and minke whales, as well as pods of bottlenose dolphins.

A guided whale and dolphin watching cruise is sure to be a memorable outing. As the captain steers to the spots where whales and dolphins are found, a certified naturalist guide provides commentary about the animals and their ocean habitat.

The Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center at the South Jersey Marina also offers whale, dolphin, and bird-watching cruises. The center's Sunset Dolphin Cruise is a relaxing boat trip that sails past the Cape May beaches and the Cape May lighthouse.

The holiday season is a special time to visit Cape May and brings with it a selection of festive things to do. During December, the Victorian houses and landmark hotels of Cape May are decorated in old-fashioned style for Christmas.

Festive illuminations, garlands, and Christmas trees lend a magical ambience to the town's historic houses. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities organizes Christmas Candlelight House Tours at historic properties throughout town. The tours include Christmas carols, hot beverages, and homemade cookies.

Kicking off the season, a Christmas Parade is held in West Cape May on the first Saturday in December. Other events in December include tree lighting ceremonies held at Congress Hall and the Emlen Physick Estate, and holiday-themed trolley rides. Congress Hall hosts a Winter Wonderland event with concerts, things to do for kids, an open-air Christmas market, and other seasonal attractions.

The Washington Street Mall is a lively place to go Christmas shopping, as boutiques open their doors for longer hours and offer refreshments.

The Historic Cold Spring Village is a small country community frozen in time. This open-air museum of Early American history includes 25 well-preserved buildings, mostly dating from the early to mid 1800s, including a barn, woodworking shop, blacksmith shop, pottery shop, one-room schoolhouse, and an inn that was a stopping place for stagecoach travelers.

Walking around the 30-acre village, visitors get a sense of the 19th-century cultural heritage. Several shops and restaurants are still operating, giving the impression of stepping back in time.

Tourists can purchase handcrafted artisan items, candy, jams, and books at the Country Store ; enjoy pastries from the Village Bakery or frozen treats from the Ice Cream Parlor ; and have brunch, lunch, or dinner at the Cold Spring Grange Restaurant that serves classic American cuisine.

The village also has a historic eight-acre working farm where cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens are raised.

Beyond the Historic District of Cape May is a quiet rural community with many small farms. Dating back to the 1600s, European colonists cultivated this area for agricultural use. In the 20th century, the land was used for the Cape May dairy, as well as for lima bean and soy bean farms.

In keeping with its heritage, a Lima Bean Festival takes place at Wilbraham Park in West Cape May every October.

Tourists will also enjoy cycling in West Cape May; it's an easy (and scenic) bike ride from Cape May's center. Bird-watchers will appreciate the observation decks and walking trails at South Cape May Meadows , which includes 200 acres of protected habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Built on a historic property, Beach Plum Farm is a 62-acre farm that supplies produce to local restaurants. Beach Plum Farm grows over 100 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

The property's rustic-chic country market sells hand-picked fresh produce harvested from the farm's fields and gardens, while the Farm Kitchen serves breakfast and lunch made with ingredients from the farm.

Other reasons to visit Beach Plum Farm are the shaded picnic area (perfect for sunny days) and farm-to-table dinners featuring seasonal menus. There are also quaint cottages that provide overnight accommodations.

Cape May was an important whaling town during the 16th and 17th centuries. However, most of the original "First Period" (1690 - 1730) colonial-era houses were destroyed in the fire of 1856. The Colonial House luckily survived the fire and is the oldest house in Cape May.

Built in 1730, the house (now open to the public as a museum) displays authentic period furnishings and household items. Visiting hours are from 1pm - 4pm Wednesday through Saturday (June 15 through September 15), as well as during Victorian Weekend in October and Christmas Candlelight House Tours.

The award-winning East Lynne Theater Company has been entertaining audiences in Cape May since 1988. The company presents theater performances inspired by classic American literature and drama, such vaudeville variety shows, Edgar Allen Poe stories, and the works of Dorothy Parker.

Performances take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May. The performing season is from May through December.

Cape May City Beaches Cape May City Beaches

For many travelers, the allure of Cape May has much to do with its plethora of spacious, white sand beaches. The entire Jersey Cape (which stretches through 10 communities) boasts 30 miles of shoreline, and Cape May itself offers up 2 1/2 miles' worth. Across the various beaches, vacationers can swim, skimboard, surf, fish, kayak and play volleyball in designated areas. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer and all of Cape May's beaches are family-friendly. Alcohol is prohibited at all times and dogs are only welcome on the sand between November and March. Metered parking can be found along the main strip and you may also find free parking on side streets. Restrooms are located at every half-mile, as are open-air showers to rinse off sand.

Recent beachgoers said Cape May's shores were clean and easy to access. Many noted the stretches of sand were especially picturesque at sunrise and sunset, and some even spotted dolphins during these times. To enjoy fewer crowds, a few travelers recommended Poverty Beach, though families preferred to stay on the main promenade for easier access to bathrooms, umbrella rentals and restaurants. Keep in mind that some visitors reported the surf could be a bit rough at times, which may be dangerous for young children.

Washington Street Mall Washington Street Mall free

Situated in the heart of Cape May, the Washington Street Mall is the place to go for one-of-a-kind retail, including local clothing stores, home goods shops, bookstores and more. The three-block outdoor shopping district is open all year and sits less than half a mile from the beach. Along the quaint stretch, you'll find restored Victorian storefronts and brick pathways, as well as whimsical fountains and benches throughout. When hunger strikes, patrons will have their choice of more than 25 restaurants and sweet shops, including the Cape May Fish Market, an Irish pub and a fudge shop.

Past travelers called the Washington Street Mall a must-visit, highlighting the unique stores and pleasant atmosphere. Some said this was the place to be in the evenings for dinner, while others remarked they spent the entire day at the mall wandering in and out of stores.

Jersey Shore Alpacas Jersey Shore Alpacas free

One of the most unique attractions in the Cape May area is Jersey Shore Alpacas, a small farm located about 10 miles north in Green Creek, New Jersey. The farm is home to around 20 friendly alpacas, as well as a store where patrons can purchase clothing, capes, socks, sweaters, gloves and more items made from alpaca fleece.

Recent travelers provided virtually no complaints about the alpaca farm, reporting that they loved their experience interacting with the gentle animals. Many felt it was a great place to take kids, though visitors of all ages enjoyed the attraction.

Cape May Lighthouse Cape May Lighthouse

Built in 1859 and opened to the public in 1988, the Cape May Lighthouse has welcomed more than 2.5 million visitors to date. Travelers who scale the 199 steps to the top of the lighthouse will be rewarded with panoramic oceanfront views. Those who would rather stay on solid ground can enjoy the Oil House, which contains a visitor center and a museum shop with souvenirs.

The majority of recent vacationers recommended a trip to this Cape May landmark. Even visitors who didn't climb to the top of the lighthouse were fond of the beachfront location and peaceful surroundings. Those who did make the journey up enjoyed the 360-degree views. Still, some families with young children said climbing the stairs was a challenge and recommended admiring the structure from the outside for free.

Emlen Physick Estate Emlen Physick Estate

Take a step back in time at the Emlen Physick Estate, the only Victorian-era house museum in New Jersey . Completed in 1879, the house belonged to a wealthy Philadelphia family, the Physicks. After surviving a proposed demolition in the 1960s, the grounds underwent a full restoration. Today, visitors can take guided tours to admire the architecture and period decor of the house, as well as learn more about the Physicks' lives. Travelers looking for a more heart-pumping experience should opt for the Historic Haunts house tour. The grounds are said to be inhabited by the spirits of the Physick family (and their many dogs), earning itself the nickname "Cape May's original haunted house."  

Recent travelers loved learning about the rich history of the property from the museum's guides, who dress the part in Victorian clothing and stay in character through the entire tour. Some recommended visiting over the holidays to see the house fully decorated for Christmas – though many said the estate was worth a visit no matter the time of year. After touring, patrons recommended stopping for high tea at the Carriage House within the estate.

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum

The Naval Air Station (NAS) Wildwood Aviation Museum is located inside a former World War II hangar that dates back to 1943. It was originally used as a training facility for dive bombers to practice takeoffs, landings, night flying and target practice. After the war, the hanger was used for incoming and outgoing charter and commuter flights until about 1990, when it began falling into disrepair. The 92,000-square-foot building was purchased for $1 in 1997 by a doctor and his wife, who fully restored the space, converted it into a museum and began welcoming visitors from near and far. Today, the NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum boasts a variety of historic planes, helicopters and WWII memorabilia. Travelers can view medevac helicopters, a large collection of military jets and more than 20 propeller aircraft, in addition to other automobiles and 1940s artifacts like retro soda machines. 

Recent travelers were impressed by the large collection of planes, cars, boats and other vintage items. Some exhibits allow visitors to climb inside of various trucks and Jeeps, which many found exciting. Though complaints were few and far between, a few patrons felt the prices were a bit too high – especially for large families – considering the relatively small size of the museum.

World War II Lookout Tower World War II Lookout Tower

Part of Cape May Point State Park, the World War II Lookout Tower – officially known as Fire Control Tower No. 23 – was built in 1942 and is New Jersey's last restorable tower from World War II. Opened to the public in 2009, the tower played a major role in defending the coast during the war and is part of the Harbor Defense of the Delaware system (known as Fort Miles), which stretched from North Wildwood, New Jersey, to Bethany Beach, Delaware.

Today, travelers can climb six flights of stairs to the top of the structure and learn about the historical significance of the area during WWII – as well as how the tower was used to spot enemy ships. Visitors said scaling the tower is a great activity for history buffs and families alike, but noted that it is closed in the offseason and there is no restroom on-site (aside from a portable stall in a nearby parking lot). The bottom floor of the tower contains a small shop with water and souvenirs.

New Jersey is home to more than 50 wineries, and some of the biggest producers can be found in Cape May. Fan favorites include the Cape May Winery and Vineyard and the Willow Creek Winery, but oenophiles should check out all options before picking a spot (though there's no harm in hopping between a few).

Cape May Winery and Vineyard is a family-owned business that got its start in 1989. As of 2020, the winery grows 11 different varietals across four vineyards covering 26 acres of land. At the property, patrons can enjoy wine tastings at the bar, indulge in tasty tapas on the deck overlooking rows of grape vines and tour the vineyard or production facility. Tastings cost $10 per person for a flight of six wines, and reservations are required for groups of seven or more. Cape May NJ Visitors Guide: Not Just a Summer Resort

Cape May, NJ: A charming Jersey Shore resort town, known for its authentic Victorian homes, B & B's, pristine beachs, quaint shops, and excellent variety of restaurants.

Cape May is not the type of resort that you visit just once. There is a charm and special warmth about the town that pulls you back again an again.

Cape May is not just a summer resort, the fall season is very popular with many theme weekends and the water is still warm enough to visit the beach. Not a beach enthusiast? There are many activities that are in full swing right up until New Years Day.

Cape May is the oldest seaside resort town in the United States, located below the Mason-Dixon line at the southern most point of NJ.

It's charm lies in it's tree-lined, gas lamp streets, it's quaint shops, authentic Victorian homes and Bed and Breakfasts. One of it's claims is that it possesses the largest collection of authentic Victorian homes in the nation.

You can park your car and bike or walk around town. In fact, If you're coming to Cape May for the first time, make a stop at the Welcome Area of the Transportation Center (where the buses go) off Lafayette Street across from the Acme shopping center and pick up a guide map on a "Car Free/Care Free" vacation.

Cape May is also the home of one of the largest commercial fishing ports in the United States, and as a result you will find a good variety of seafood restaurants that serve up locally caught fresh sea food.

If relaxing on the beach is not your thing, there are plenty of other activities that can occupy your day time leisure hours.

Cape May Attractions & Things To Do

Cape May Beaches The Cape May County Beaches in the southern end of the Jersey shore are known for their wide, fine, powdery sand, and are considered to be amongst the best beaches on the Atlantic coast.

Biking Cape May is a bike friendly town. Their "Dero Fixit" is a free bicycle repair and service station located to the left of the steps leading up to Convention Hall. Its equipped with a hand air pump for filling your tires, and tools to change a flat tire or adjust your brakes. Its secured by wires to make sure everything will be there when you need it. Cape May also has many bike rentals available throughout the town by the hour or day. Cycle down to the Cape May Light House or to Sunset Beach.

Cape May County Zoo The Cape May County Zoo is the largest and most visited zoo along the Jersey Shore. Popular with families the zoo features lush country gardens, with a large collection of over 550 animals representing over 250 species.

Cape May Light House The Cape May Lighthouse is located on the southernmost tip of New Jersey. Climb up the winding 199 stairs to the top of the 157 foot-tall structure and from the watch gallery take in a fantastic view the Atlantic ocean, the town of Cape May, Delaware Bay, and Cape May Point State Park. Visit the on site Nautical Museum.

National Wildlife Refuge The Cape May National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest in the National Wildlife system. It was established to protect migratory birds along New Jersey's coastline.

Sunset Beach Every trip to Cape May must include a visit to Sunset Beach. Known for it's spectacular over the water sunsets, the Flag lowering ceremony at sunset, the site of the S. S. Atlantus, a World War l concrete ship, and the World War - ll "Concrete Tower"

Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey 632 Lafayette Street Harriet Tubman lived in Cape May in the early 1850s, working to help fund her missions to guide enslaved people to freedom. The Harriet Tubman Museum building is located on a block that anti-slavery activists called home in Cape May. Lafayette Street and Franklin Street became a center of abolitionist activity centered around three important buildings developed in 1846.

Cape May Stage - Robert Shackleton Playhouse 405 Lafayette St, (Corner of Bank and Lafayette Streets) Cape May Stage is a non-profit organization, located in a 1853 historic structure that is now a state-of-the-art theatre and is known to residents and visitors "as the jewel in the crown of Cape May's architectural gems." This beautifully restored building has 124 seats set up in stadium design.

Whale Watching Take in a Whale and Dolphin watching boat trip. For a more casual experience, there is picnicking, and beach walking at sunrise or sunset, where you are apt to see schools of dolphins swimming by.

Washington Street Pedestrian Mall A must visit pedestrian village with quaint shops, restaurants, art galleries, souvenir stores and more. Many are open year round.

Other popular things to do and attractions in Cape May include:  kayaking in the salt water marshlands, signing on to a salt marsh safari, deep sea fishing, and visiting the Bird Observatory operated by the New Jersey Audubon society

Cape May 's coastline winds from Higbee Beach to Poverty Beach on Sewell Point. The wide swath of soft sand is a magnet for families intent on enjoying the sun, sand, and Atlantic Ocean surf. A number of hotels offer beach service, but most folks pack their own umbrellas, chairs and picnics to bring to the shore. Be sure to head to Cape May Point to pay a visit to the town's lighthouse, and climb to its top for 360-degree vistas. As the sun dips toward the horizon, meander to Sunset Beach for stellar views of nature's nightly farewell.

After spending the morning in the surf and sand, enjoy a relaxing afternoon window shopping or buying souvenirs as you stroll through the center of downtown Cape May. Pedestrian-friendly Washington Street Mall stretches for 3 blocks, and is lined with all manner of shops, from high-end jewelry and funky fashions, to silly tchotchkes and fudge shops. During World War II, the airport was a dive bomber base, and there are some fascinating exhibits telling the story of the daredevils who trained there. 3. Emlen Physick Estate: Step Back into the Victorian Era

One of the most elegant Victorian mansions in Cape May, the Emlen Physick Estate was built in 1879 on Washington Street and is still in pristine condition. That's because it was purchased for preservation in 1970, then turned into an engaging museum of Victorian life. These days, if you have a passion for the past, tours will show you round the mansion, the Carriage House, and the Carroll Gallery, which includes plenty of Cape May-themed exhibits.

4. Nature Center of Cape May: Flora, Fauna, and Plenty of Family Fun

Moving over to Delaware Avenue in eastern Cape May, you'll come across the Nature Center of Cape May, one of the resort's premier family attractions. Managed by the Audubon Society, the Center features a children's garden which teaches kids about plants and local wildlife through hands-on activities, and there are special sections devoted to butterflies, marine life, birdwatching and life on the beach, giving an absorbing picture of New Jersey's natural riches. If you fancy something more energetic, the Center also offers kayak tours of the coast, while the Skimmer eco-boat offers trips around the harbor without the risk of getting soaked.

5. Historic Cold Spring Village: Blacksmiths, Battle Reconstructions, and Beer

Just north of Cape May proper, Cold Spring Village is an incredible historic attraction. Built in the 1970s by the local Salvatore family, Cold Spring is a meticulously reconstructed 18th- and 19th-century settlement set on two acres of NJ land. There's nowhere on the Eastern Seaboard quite like it, where the buildings include a bookbinder, blacksmith, basket weaver, ice cream parlor, and an 1850s schoolhouse - all inhabited by staff in period costumes. There's even an on-site brewery, the perfect place to round off your tour of Cape May.

If you adore seafood, Cape May is your kind of destination. Fresh shellfish and fish dishes are always on the menu at restaurants like the Lobster House and the Pilot House, but there are also Italian options like Godmothers and specialist breakfast cafes like the Mad Batter. If you get the chance, try to schedule a meal by the sea as well. Bars and restaurants like Martini Beach offer spellbinding views, particularly as the sun goes down. Expect to pay around $20 for a good seafood entree and $10-15 for midrange meals.

When to visit Cape May

Locals will tell you that Cape May is a year-round coastal destination, but some seasons are more attractive than others. In spring, the resort is an appealing place to escape city life, but with temperatures rarely bettering 60 degrees, it's hardly beach weather. Instead, try an early summer or early fall trip. In June and September, you can sunbathe or swim (though the water will be warmer in September), and accommodation won't be as expensive as in the middle of summer. September and October also see the resort hosting plenty of events, including Oktoberfest and the Food and Wine Festival.

How to Get to Cape May

The best way to travel to Cape May by plane is to fly into Baltimore, Philadelphia or Newark and either drive or catch a bus from there. All major airports are around three hours away by road from Cape May. An alternative route is to take a Spirit flight into Atlantic City, which is just 45 minutes away, but flights tend to cost more and run far less frequently.

Cape May's nearest station is at Atlantic City, which is on New Jersey's state transit system, providing excellent connections with Philadelphia and New York. After that, you can take NJ Transit Bus 319 or 552 straight to Cape May.

If you live on the Eastern Seaboard, driving is easily the most convenient way to reach Cape May. From New York, take the New Jersey Turnpike to exit 11, and then onto the Garden State Parkway. From Philadelphia take I-676, switch to the Atlantic City Expressway, and then the Garden State Parkway at exit 7S.

NJ Transit runs two bus routes (552 and 319) into Cape May. The 319 is particularly handy as it runs all the way from New York's Port Authority Terminal, while the 552 runs from Atlantic City. Seasonal alterations may apply, so check the schedule before you travel.

Cape May is full of captivating Victorian properties that have been adapted for use as B&Bs. Great examples include Akwaaba by the Sea, which dates to the 1850s, the picturesque John F. Craig House and Southern Mansion, probably the most upmarket place in the resort. Budget options do exist as well. Check out the comfortable Periwinkle Inn for a high standard of hospitality at more affordable rates.

Cape May Beachfront – The major reason for Cape May's existence is its beautiful city beach, which was turned into America's first seaside resort in the 1850s. Nowadays, sites like Poverty Beach are wonderful places to sunbathe, and the Promenade has plenty of great restaurants, including SeaSalt and La Verandah.

The Cove – Not far from the main promenade, you'll find the Cove, one of America's most picturesque neighborhoods. The elegant streets are lined with Victorian mansions, while Cove Beach is reckoned to be the city's finest.

Downtown Cape May – Downtown Cape May is a little inland from the beaches, and it's the place to shop, dine and have fun. It contains Washington Street Mall, the town's retail hub, institutions like the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and exceptional places to eat like the Lobster House, Cape May's best seafood eatery.

Although you can get around the island of Cape May on foot, there is a limited trolley service which makes things easier for seniors and the less physically able. Run by the Great American Trolley Company, the trolley runs past Washington Street Mall and costs $1 (free for park and ride customers).

Companies like Garibaldi Taxis and Cape May Taxis are always on hand if you need a late night ride or want to travel to out of the way beaches and attractions. Expect to pay $3 for the meter drop and $2.50 per mile after that. However, Uber is cheaper, charging a basic fare of $2.40, then $1.70 per mile.

A rental car is hardly necessary to get around Cape May island itself, but you might find it convenient to visit attractions like the Cape May Lighthouse (or even Atlantic City if you want to make a day trip). Rental outlets in the city include chains like Enterprise, as well as local companies like Just Four Wheels, and rates can drop to $10 per day for some models.

Cape May has plenty of souvenir stores and boutiques and most of them are clustered around Washington Street Mall. Stores in this pedestrianized area include apparel outlets like Galvanic, gift stores like Madame Cape May's and candy stores like the Original Fudge Kitchen. Cape May is well served by supermarkets, with regional chain ACME operating three stores on the island which should enable self-catering vacationers to keep their costs down during their stay. Be aware that the cost of living in the resort tends to be slightly higher than the USA in general, so shopping for grocery bargains can be a good option.

A canal, dug from a natural shallow creek, runs from Cape May's harbor to the Delaware Bay making Cape May an island. This simple fact is fundamental to understanding Cape May.  But first here are some fairly well-known facts about Cape May, New Jersey:

• Though it is an island, Cape May is a part of a "cape," a strip of land projecting into a body of water. Settled by whalers and fishermen in colonial times, Cape May has been the destination of vacationers since  "resorting" to a different location began, making Cape May America's oldest seaside resort.
• In 1878, Cape May City nearly burned to the ground; the reconstruction that followed has left a plethora of Victorian era buildings like no other in America.
• With roots as a U.S. Navy base prior to World War II, Cape May's Coast Guard Training Station continues to be an integral part of Cape May.
• In 1976, Cape May was declared a National Historic Landmark City.

Cape May (Cape Island) is made up of Cape May City, the boroughs of West Cape May and Cape May Point and a township (Lower, which is not to be confused with Middle and Upper - all of which comprise Cape May County). Because of the canal,  Cape May is separated from the rest of New Jersey, both physically and metaphorically. Unlike other Jersey shore towns, Cape May City still looks like small-town America, complete with tree-canopied streets, right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. The year-round population of Cape May is about 4,700, a number that has varied little for over a hundred years. That number can swell to more than 40,000 on some summer weekends.

Dining in Cape May often exceeds the casual visitor's expectations.  From the restaurants on Schellenger's Landing at the base of the canal bridge, to those along the beach front and into West Cape May, one can find superior cuisine alongside customary seaside fare. There are almost no chain stores in Cape May. Large national franchisers have not located here. Instead there are scores of small shops and antique stores from the outdoor Washington Street Mall to the Beach Avenue store fronts that cater to the sun and fun crowds.

Staying in Cape May offers vacationers the widest possible variety of experiences. The hotels of yesteryear are still here, some beautifully restored and others, by design, comfortably left as they have been for decades. Meticulously maintained bed and breakfast inns are renowned in Cape May; as are many historic Guest Houses .  Of course for the thousands of visitors who prefer conventional luxuries and a swimming pool, Cape May has plenty of resort hotels . Rounding out the choices is the traditional whole house or condo rental .  Prices on these stays will vary with the season, the amenities offered and their proximity to the beach.

While not in the ocean or on the beach, visitors can spend time in Cape May exploring nature trails, whale and dolphin watching, taking Victorian house or ghost tours, golfing (real and miniature), fishing (surf and sea), antiquing or visiting art galleries and history exhibits. Visitors can get a spa treatment, take in live theatre and concerts, stop by a vineyard for wine tasting, take a carriage ride, play skeeball in the arcades and even bar hop. With rental spots in key locations on this flat island, bicycling to everything on the island is easily done... and something locals heartily recommend.

And if that's not enough to keep vacationers content, they can cross over the canal bridge to find amusement parks in the Wildwoods and casinos a 45-minute drive away in Atlantic City.  When the excitement is over and the time is late, the calm of Cape May will be ready and waiting, as it is now and always has been.
