CARL PALMER Announces 'The Return Of Emerson, Lake & Palmer' Summer 2023 Tour

Sole surviving member Carl Palmer , in association with the estates of his bandmates Keith Emerson and Greg Lake , has announced "The Return Of Emerson, Lake & Palmer" 2023 summer tour. Launching its second U.S .tour in July, the shows will actually again reunite ELP live on stage through modern technology.

The tour continues the successful run of show which began in November and December 2022. After exploring the idea of a hologram tour in detail, Palmer (with the estates of Emerson and Lake ) opted for what they felt was a more honest approach using live footage of Keith and Greg on massive video walls alongside Carl (and his band) playing live on stage. The voice and instrumentation of Greg Lake and the unmistakable keyboard mastery of Keith Emerson will be mixed with Palmer 's onstage live drumming to magically reunite ELP once again.

Emerson and Lake passed away nine months apart in 2016, leaving Palmer to carry on the band's enormous musical legacy.

Says Palmer : "The film ELP made of its sold-out run at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1992 had everything we needed to make these tours happen. We were able to use just the camera shots of Keith and Greg , with the sterling audio tracks of their performances resulting in a combination of film and onstage performance of my band that brings back the magic of ELP ."

After establishing themselves in bands such as THE NICE , KING CRIMSON and THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN , ELP was formed in early 1970 as one of rock's first (and biggest) supergroups. With record sales of over 50 million and decades of sold-out tours through the 1970s and again in the 1990s, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER has remained one of the best-selling classic rock bands of all time. The band's complete recorded catalog, now under the direction and distribution of BMG , continues to be a steady force on the international music scene. The tour will coincide with the new BMG box set of classic ELP hit singles pressed on vinyl with reproductions of the original picture sleeves.

The tour is being launched with the full approval of the Emerson and Lake estates, as well as the various managers who have represented the members of the band. "Welcome Back My Friends - The Return Of Emerson, Lake & Palmer" will be focused on the U.S. and Canada through the rest of 2023, and eventually play all over the world where ELP toured throughout its career.

It was amazing to see such an accomplished artist in an intimate venue. His drumming skills seem undiminished by age. This project doesn't have a vocalist to sing the songs. The approach is to create the instrumental legacy of ELP, and the two artist that appear with CP re-create the music with stunning virtuosity on both guitar and Chapman Stick. Seeing and hearing the music this way was a powerful revelation. The focus was on the sounds created by the instruments, and it certainly did the music justice. Palmer got up from the drum kit to address the audience and tell stories and jokes that gave insight to the experience of the original band, and to pay tribute to the two original ELP members lost in 2016. There was also a visual element of archive footage and music video type material to accompany the songs, projected on a screen to the audience's stage left. I had seen the band open for the YEStival Tour in 2017, and I am glad to have had a chance to see them play a full set. I definitely recommend Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy to hear ELP's music LIVE!

Carl Palmer at the "Yestival" was one of the best 30 minutes of my life. His masterful performance of classic ELP songs and his god-like drum solo was a sight to behold. But Carl Palmer wasn't the only member of ELP. The guitarist and bassist alongside Palmer we're also great musicians that perfectly recreated the music. The bassist at one point switched to some sort of midi instrument to simulate Keith Emerson's keyboarding skill and did a fantastic job doing so. I highly recommend seeing Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy while Carl is still young enough to play. My only gripe is that there were no vocals during the performance. Not even a recording. But their songs are so memerable, you don't need a singer to remember the lyrics.

When I saw Carl Palmer this year the guitar player used a vocoder for all the ELP songs they did. Last time there were no vocals. They were all great musicians and deserve their just rewards.

Carl Palmer resurrects prog supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer with modern technology for US live dates

Carl Palmer has announced July live dates for the US for the Return Of Emerson, Lake & Palmer  summer tour. The tour continues the run of shows which began in November and December 2022 and reunited Palmer with his deceased former band mates. You can watch a promotional video for the tour below.

After exploring the idea of a hologram tour in detail, Palmer, along with the Estates of Keith Emerson and Greg Lake , opted for what they felt was a more honest approach using live footage of Keith and Greg from the band's 1992 performance at London's Royal Albert Hall on massive video walls alongside Palmer ad his ELP Legacy band (Paul Bielatowicz on guitars and Simon Fitzpatrick on bass).

John Wetton’s Widow Responds to Fan Complaints Over Reformed Asia

John Wetton ‘s widow has fired back at fans with complaints about Asia ‘s newly rebuilt lineup .

Co-founder Geoff Downes introduced the new members in advance of a multi-act summer tour . Wetton died in 2017 , while original guitarist Steve Howe and drummer Carl Palmer are busy with other projects.

“It would be easy for me to dismiss Asia without its other band members, proclaiming that it’s not really the band so there’s no point in them going on,” Lisa Wetton says in an official statement . “There’s a problem with this statement: John Wetton himself would have endorsed this tour as he wanted the music to live on.”

The founding four were only initially together for a couple of years. Asia continued with a rotating series of players before Downes, Howe, Palmer and Wetton finally reunited between 2006-13. Downes remains the only person to have appeared in every incarnation of the group.

Some fans also suggested that the lineup shouldn’t be called Asia. Wetton “would have wanted the name to remain, as long as Geoff leads the way,” Lisa counters. “Changing the name would go against John’s wishes. This is still Asia, and the current group have worked closely with Geoff Downes to respect the integrity of the music. I have seen it and feel comfortable with this current lineup.”

Downes has said inspiration for a new version of Asia emerged from the Extraordinary Life Memorial Concert , the 2023 tribute show where bass-playing vocalist Harry Whitley so deftly inhabited Wetton’s lyrics. Lisa Wetton was similarly impressed.

“It was the first time the outside world would hear the phenomenal Harry Whitley on lead vocals,” she says. “Most everyone, including myself, was stunned by Harry’s evocative voice, which shares an eerily similar tonal quality to that of John Wetton. Geoff introduced Whitley to a wider audience and we all knew this would be the start of something very special – a new chapter for Asia.”

The updated lineup is rounded out by players with direct connections to Asia’s co-founding frontman. Guitarist John Mitchell, another performer from the Extraordinary Life Memorial Concert, worked with Wetton and Downes in Icon and the John Wetton Band. Drummer Virgil Donati was part of a memorable reunion of the prog-rock band UK with Wetton.

“The current lineup gives the music a fresh energy which I haven’t experienced since John was alive,” Lisa Wetton adds. “I am personally thrilled to get behind this tour, and I know you will be thrilled too.”

The Heat of the Moment Tour will hit 21 North American cities in July. Also featured are Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash , Focus, Curved Air and emcee Roger Dean, the artist who created Asia’s album covers.
