Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. Co-op Insurance is a trading name of CIS General Insurance Limited which is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

The company offers Single and Annual Multi Trip Policies across 4 levels of cover: Bronze, Silver Gold and Platinum. They also offer Backpacker Travel Insurance across 3 levels of cover: Bronze, Silver and Gold. The maximum duration the Single Trip Policy is 90 days and that of the Annual Multi Trip Policy ranges across the levels of cover with the Bronze covering 31 days, Silver 45 days and the Gold and Platinum levels covering 90 days. The limits offered are also above average with the medical emergency cover being unlimited and the cancellation cover limit being as high as £7,500.

In addition to the main insurance policies, they also offer optional covers such as Winter Sports, Cruise Cover, Gadget Cover, Natural Disaster Cover, Golf Cover, Car Hire Excess Waiver and Hazardous activities cover.

Quick Insurance

The travel insurance was done online. Quick and reasonably priced for 2. Was able to tick for travel insurance documents to be posted as I've no printer. This was a weight of my mind. Also there is a telephone number you can call which is very handy. Satisfied customer.

Co-Op Essentials

There is now 2 'streams' to Co_Op insurance. I'm going review 'Essentials' or 'Eco' insurance for Car insurance. They do have a strange way of dealing so far as Certificate of insurance and taking the money from credit card does not occur until after the policy has started. Whilst they try to reassure me that the vehicle is insured for use I'd be much happier if they collected the fees and issued to documentation before the policy starts - even when it's a continuation policy. Until I see that the fees have been collected and I have a policy document I'm not willing to use my car. Morning of 04/06/24 - The certificate is now available for download, which I've done and checking with the bank the fee has been collected. Much happier now. I prefer to receive the paperwork before the renewal date. Interesting to note that the company does read these reviews which has prompted me to add to my review and change the score.

after waiting 20 minutes to get through…

after waiting 20 minutes to get through to an adviser, I had a really unhelpful person who just said that the renewal was GBP406 When I asked why it was GBP70 more than last year, I got the response that these were the two cheapest quotes from the brokers. I could tell from the attitude that he was not interested in trying to help me in getting a cheaper quote so I have gone elsewhere and brought it down to GBP300 which I am much more at ease with. Very disappointed as normally the Co-Op in previous years do try their best but I suppose its a way of the times nowadays and the lack of interest from some staff.

Travel Insurance, Now Older, needs tweaks

Only just purchased, so haven’t had to use; but the COOP travel insurance offering had the most choice wrt cover packages and there fore cost. Medical tweaks for us was relatively simple and ‘bolt ins’ available. Flexible solutions that, after comparison, are competitively priced.

Travel insurance. Good value for annual travel insurance for a couple. No hassle doing it online. Have had Coop Insurance before but checked eksewhere for better deal. This time Coop was best for me.

Cheaper to go annual

I recently went with the Co-op Gold Standard for an upcoming trip to Japan. The quote was over £120 which is much higher than I've ever paid for single trip insurance. That might be because there is more risk in Japan OR the fact I've just turned 50 - unsure! The high price included my Co-op member's discount. After shopping around for the same standard of cover, I soon came to realise that the Co-op quote was actually very good for the level of cover offered. You get what you pay for with insurance and it's very important to compare like for like. Once I'd gone to buy, there was a last minute pop-up on the Co-op site which suggested that an annual policy would actually work out CHEAPER!!!! Which it did, by quite a significant amount. I used the online chat option to double check a few things and provided I wasn't travelling to North America, Mexico and The Caribbean, the cheaper price was correct. I've got two Europe Trips coming up soon too, so this was a no-brainer. Policy documents were emailed within seconds of buying, hassle free process and a very good price - as usual,

Had a renewal quote for my house insurance that was nearly three times as much as last year. I then found a quote with a different insurer for around one third of the cost and with better features. Co-op then took the money from my account three days before it would have been due, pushing me well in to my overdraft. I had to phone to try to get it back and it will apparently be a few days before they can return it.

Hello When we send the renewal documents, it does explain we will take the renewal payment 3 days before the renewal date and asks for you to contact us before this date, so we can stop the renewal of your policy if you don't wish to go ahead. AVOID!!!! AWFUL PET INSURANCE

Absolutely disgusting how long it takes to process claims at this company. It’s now been 7 weeks since I’ve put in a claim and 4 weeks for another and have not heard anything at all. I’m now incurring credit card charges due to their incapabilities. Thankfully my bills are under £1k but I can’t begin to imagine if it would have been thousands of pounds and having to wait months for them settle. I have 3 animals with this pet insurer and I’ll be moving 2 of them to an actual RELIABLE company. AVOID!!!!

I was quoted a renewal premium by phone

I was quoted a renewal premium by email. I checked my details and changed from 'Not occupied during the day' to 'Occupied 24 hrs'. Also I now have an outside security camera so changed that. Both these facts should mean my premium should go down. Instead I was quoted £20 MORE on my premium!

The wrong contact number is on the emailed Policy renewal documentation. The call handler said I was through to the wrong number and my Policy number was not right for her to deal with. I was put through to another number and had to listen to all the preamble message yet again. I was not best impressed.

Co-op Insurance has launched a travel insurance product that offers cashless medical expenses cover for all ages and medical conditions, which means customers will not have to pay out themselves for any medical treatment upfront.

A survey by Co-op found 62% of holidaymakers who have claimed on their travel insurance said they had to cover the costs upfront themselves and then claim these costs back at a later date.

With the average travel insurance claim now being £2,090, a quarter of those polled (26%) had had to turn to family members to borrow money in order to pay for their healthcare treatment. A further one in four (25%) had to take money out of their savings and one in ten (10%) ended up in debt.

The Co-op product also offers access to an online medical consultation with a doctor, 24/7, from anywhere in the world. Users can receive prescriptions, referrals and fit-for-work notes in this way too.

Comment: Mark Summerfield, chief executive of Co-op Insurance, said the company had recognised a gap in the market and it was the first general insurer to pay medical expenses up front, ensuring its customers were not left out of pocket at what can already be a stressful time.

Given that private medical insurance (PMI) has long paid direct, leaving customers with nothing to pay out of their own pocket, that is a surprising claim. However, this new approach is a very logical and doubtless very welcome move that is sure to be followed by other travel insurers too.

Looking at the wider implications, for health insurers, it has always been a surprise that many help their customers only as long as they stay in the UK but then abandon them as soon as they go abroad – even on a day trip. A PMI linked travel policy is not new but this angle could encourage more PMI insurers to look at this market too.

Certainly, cashless medical expenses cover should be popular with many customers.

Plus points: Travel insurance that doesn’t require customers to pay first, then claim back.

Not so plus points: Many travel insurance customers may not even realise that was how travel insurance often worked.

Price is obviously a big consideration when you are looking for the best travel insurance – you’ve probably already spent a lot on your holiday. But you may be able to get much better coverage for just a few pounds extra, so it’s worth scrolling down the comparison site’s list of providers before buying.

Medical costs abroad will undoubtedly be the biggest expense you face if you fall ill abroad, so don’t scrimp on those.

Then think about your next biggest expense (probably cancellation/interruption of your trip) and make sure that you have high-value coverage for that.

If you find you can get much higher coverage (the maximum amount you can claim per type of claim, such as medical or baggage) for not very much more money, go for the slightly more expensive option.

For example, cancellation insurance would normally pay out if you broke your leg just before you were due to travel and had to cancel your trip.

Interruption insurance would cover you if you had to come home early for certain reasons beyond your control – for example, if the area you were staying in was engulfed in wildfires.

  • Money you would have lost on pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses is paid to you under the policy
  • It can be especially valuable if the trip you are planning is very expensive, as this is money you would lose if you couldn’t go

Baggage cover

This insurance covers the cost of replacing your luggage if it is lost or stolen.

For example, if an airline loses your luggage in transit or your suitcase is stolen from your hostel while you’re away, you can make a claim for the cost of replacing its contents.

You may also be able to claim for costs related to baggage delay if the airline temporarily misplaced your baggage.

  • You can claim for the actual cash value of your belongings or the cost of replacing them (whichever is less)
  • High-value items, such as jewellery or sports equipment, can be very expensive to replace without travel insurance
  • Standard policies usually place per item and total limits on claims.

  • Cover for Covid-related emergency medical treatment and expenses while away
  • Cover if you unexpectedly need to quarantine, including extra travel and accommodation costs to get home (provided a return trip was booked) 
  • Cover for costs for any accommodation and excursions unused due to getting Covid where the costs can’t be recovered elsewhere
  • No cover you if you travel against FCDO advice*
  • No cover if you can’t travel because you don’t meet the entry requirements of a country (such as having had Covid vaccinations)*

* It’s worth noting that these clauses are not unusual and the majority of providers will have something similar

Tips for selecting the best UK travel insurance packages

Need some help picking the best UK travel insurance packages to make sure that you get the best travel insurance deals? Here are some tips for picking the best policy features for you.

Coverage limits

When looking for the best travel insurance companies to go with, check coverage limits. These are the maximum amounts your travel insurer will pay if you need to claim. You’ll see when you compare travel insurance policies that coverage limits vary for each type of claim and between policies.

The government-backed MoneyHelper website recommends that the best UK travel insurance should have the following minimum coverage for each type of claim:

  • Medical: £1m or more for travel to Europe and £2m or more for the US
  • Cancellation/interruption: £2,000 or more
  • Missed departure: £500 or more
  • Delay: £200 or more
  • Baggage cover: £1,500 or more
  • Personal liability cover: £2 million or more

Deductibles/excess

Deductibles, also known as the excess, is the amount you have to pay out of your own pocket before your travel insurance will start paying for your claim.

You have to make a trade-off when it comes to choosing the excess and the best travel insurance policy for you.

The lower the excess on a travel insurance policy, the better for you if you have to claim because you will have less to pay from your own pocket (or, more often, deducted from your claim).

But lower excess travel insurance policies are more expensive because the insurer knows it has more to pay out if you claim. Higher excess policies are cheaper, but you’ll have more deducted from your claim.

An exclusion on a travel insurance policy is an event the policy will not cover you for.

Common exclusions on a standard travel insurance policy may not be obvious. According to the ABTA – The Travel Association, these include:

  • Incidents that occur after drinking too much alcohol or taking drugs
  • Theft of unattended possessions
  • Sports, extreme sports and activities such as skiing, white water rafting and bungee jumping
  • Medical treatment resulting from existing medical conditions you have not declared or conditions preventable by vaccine or advisable medication, such as antimalarials
  • Medical costs if you stay abroad after your doctor says you are fit to return to the UK
  • Strikes and industrial action if it was known when you booked your trip
  • Rescheduled flights where the airline has cancelled and then rescheduled your flight
  • Travel to destinations where the FCDO advises against all but essential travel

To get the best travel insurance deals, one way around some of these exclusions is to buy add-ons for adventure activities. In addition, make sure to declare all pre-existing conditions and keep an eye out for any travel disruptions before you book.

Pre-existing conditions

Pre-existing conditions are illnesses or medical conditions you have and are aware of before you travel.

Travel insurance companies will ask you to disclose any pre-existing conditions. If you use a comparison website, it will be among the first questions you’re asked before it shows you quotes. It’s important to be honest.

Some travel insurance companies, but not all, will offer cover for pre-existing medical conditions, while others will offer cover but exclude any claims arising from that medical condition. This will depend on the person being covered and the medical condition.

Most price comparison websites include an option to show insurers who do offer coverage for pre-existing conditions, so that would be a good place to start.

The following are likely to be considered pre-existing conditions you should disclose, according to the government-backed MoneyHelper website:

  • A condition where you are on a list for an operation
  • A condition where you are waiting for test results
  • Anything you have been to the doctor about in the last year, including minor things
  • Any serious conditions you’ve ever had – for example, cancer, heart trouble, respiratory problems or a mental health breakdown

A good tip for everyone, but especially if you have a pre-existing condition, is to buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday. If your condition gets worse and forces you to cancel your plans, you’ll be covered from the day the policy starts.

On family group policies, the cost will be determined based on the riskiest traveller (according to insurers), which could be someone with a pre-existing condition or an older individual. In this case, it is often cheaper for the group for that person to get a separate policy.

Add-on options

Add-ons are extras you can purchase in addition to a standard travel insurance policy. They cost a bit more, but you may find you’re not covered without them. 

Gadget insurance

This covers things that a standard policy may not, such as your mobile phone or laptop. If these items are covered, you may find the claim limits are far less than the cost of replacing them.

Before you add this option to your travel insurance, check your home insurance policy, because you may already be covered.

Winter sports/adventure activities

Riskier activities, such as skiing or white water rafting, often require extra holiday insurance because insurers think that you are more likely to need to make a claim doing these things.

Winter sports/adventure activities cover is worth getting, or you may find you are not covered for medical expenses if something goes wrong.

Standard travel insurance is generally meant for land-based holidays so you’ll need to opt for a specialist cruise policy if your holiday is a cruise.

European FCDO travel advice extension

Most standard travel insurance policies are invalid if you travel when the FCDO advises against “all but essential travel”.

This add-on allows you to travel to Europe with a valid travel insurance policy, even if the FCDO has advised against it.

This can be an expensive add-on, but if you really must travel to a risky area, you will need this extension in order to make sure you have cover.

Best holiday insurance summary

Choosing the right travel insurance is an essential part of enjoying peace of mind while you are on holiday.

When looking for the best travel insurance deals, don’t just pick the cheapest policy. Instead, look for the cover limits that match your requirements. For example, baggage cover of £5,000 isn’t worth having if your baggage is worth £1,000; cancellation cover up to £10,000 isn’t worth having if your holiday cost you £2,000.

The easiest way to compare the best travel insurance is usually by using a travel insurance comparison website.

Think about the sort of activities you’ll be doing while you’re away. You may need extra holiday insurance for things such as winter sports or scuba diving or if you are going on a cruise.

Be honest about any pre-existing conditions when buying your travel insurance, or you won’t be covered if you have to claim.

The best travel insurance is a safety net for you and your family to enjoy your trip away stress-free, knowing that you’re covered for everything from medical expenses to cancellations if things go wrong.

How do I make a claim with my travel insurance company?

To claim on your travel insurance while you are away, make sure that you take your policy number with you and the emergency number for your insurer. If you are travelling abroad, take any international numbers too.

Call your insurer as soon as you realise you need to make a claim. Keep all receipts and medical expense forms. If you are travelling with other people, make them aware of your policy details and the insurer’s phone number in case they need to call on your behalf.

To make a claim when you return home, check the following:

  • You haven’t left it too late to make a claim
  • What you’re claiming for is covered
  • The excess is not more than the value of your claim (if so, it’s not worth claiming)

Notify your insurer as soon as possible for a claim form, send it back fast and keep a copy of it. You should also include copies of paperwork to support your claim, such as receipts or medical certificates (keep copies of the originals in case your claim is queried or refused).

The issue of insurance can be super straight forward if you own a home or rent an apartment. In this case, it’s easy to figure out what type of insurance you need.

Homeowners get homeowners insurance and renters get renters or tenants insurance.

But what type of insurance do you get if you own shares in a co-op building? Not everyone knows that co-op insurance exists to meet this type of insurance need.

As you might imagine, co-op insurance is a tad more complex than homeowners or renters insurance because of the way co-ops are structured. Let me start by saying that you’ll need to do some digging to find out exactly what coverage you need. 

I’m going to start off by sharing what I think are the companies that offer the most attractive co-op insurance, and then help break down everything you need to know about co-op insurance.

Best co-op insurance companies overview

This may seem like a strange ‘best of’ category for any type of insurance. And that’s because it is. Whereas most  insurance companies exist to turn a profit for their owners and shareholders, Lemonade aims to turn a profit and  focuses on giving back.  Lemonade takes a flat fee off your premium, and  any money left over after paying out claims is donated to causes policyholders care about. 

Lemonade calls this giveback, which is as you can imagine, pretty unique to Lemonade. It makes them the best co-op insurance for insurance that gives back.

Co-op insurance with Lemonade covers 5 main areas: dwelling, personal property, loss of use if you can no longer live in your co-op, personal liability, and medical payments to others. You can get a quote from Lemonade quickly if you live in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin.

If you own a co-op in NY, CA, TX, IL, PA, DC, or NJ, and rent out your property less than 5 times a year, Lemonade provides landlord insurance which will protect your property and the stuff you own, but does not protect your tenant.

While Policygenius doesn’t actually offer co-op insurance policies themselves, I’ve included them as the best co-op insurance option for multiple quotes.

Policygenius  is an insurance broker. This means they work with several insurance companies to find you the best co-op insurance for your situation.

You only have to fill out one application. After your application is submitted, you’ll get many quotes from different insurance companies. This saves you both time and potentially money, as well.

While Policygenius doesn’t offer a co-op insurance category on their site, you can get quotes through either homeowners or renters insurance based on your particular co-op and your needs.

If you serve in the United States military or are a family member of someone who has, you may qualify to become a USAA member. USAA’s insurance options, including co-op insurance, are for members only.

If you do qualify, one of the major benefits of USAA is they understand the lifestyle their members live since they’re all connected to the military in some way. This includes having to move across the country multiple times over a career.

Their customer service is top-notch and they can help you figure out how to help with your unique situations as a military member. Other insurance companies may not be able to relate to the lifestyle or the needs like USAA can.

What is co-op insurance?

Co-op insurance can be difficult to understand. In a traditional co-op arrangement, a corporation owns a building. 

Individuals own shares of the corporation that allow them to live in individual units within the building. However, the individuals don’t own the units, they only own the shares of the co-op.

When it comes to insuring co-ops, it can be done in different ways. The corporation normally has a master co-op insurance policy that covers all of the common areas and certain other aspects. 

Unfortunately, the master co-op insurance policy may vary from co-op to co-op, so you need to read it to understand what is and isn’t covered.

Some co-op master insurance insures walls and fixtures

In some cases, co-ops may insure the building as it was originally built, including walls and fixtures within an individual unit. 

Fixtures usually include items that are physically attached to the building such as light fixtures, cabinets, and countertops. That said, items that aren’t attached, such as personal belongings and sometimes appliances, aren’t fixtures. 

If changes are made to the unit or fixtures, they may not be insured beyond the value of the original configuration of the unit. If you buy into a co-op and live in an updated unit, the updates may not be insured at their new value under the master policy.

Other co-op master policies may only include common areas

Each co-op may have different types of insurance policies that cover different things. Other co-ops may state that the people that live in the units are responsible for everything from the walls in, including fixtures such as cabinets. 

In these cases, co-op insurance master policies typically focus on insuring the structure of the building, the exterior of the building and the common areas. They also likely include liability insurance for the insured areas, but not within your unit.

Understand what your co-op’s master policy insures

For that reason, it’s important to carefully read your co-op corporation’s master policy to see what is and isn’t covered by it. 

Insurance policies can be confusing, so you may also want to go over the master co-op policy with your insurance agent. Insurance agents are used to reading these complicated policies and can help you determine the coverage you need.

Once you understand what isn’t covered by the master policy, you can figure out what type of co-op insurance you need to cover your investment.

Differences between co-op insurance and homeowners insurance

If you’ve owned a home in the past, you may think co-op insurance and homeowners insurance should be pretty similar. While they do share some common characteristics, they’re very different at the same time.

In a traditional homeowners insurance policy, the structure, personal property, and liability are covered. Homeowners would potentially have to rebuild their entire home in the worst-case scenario. 

Co-op shareholders would only be responsible for replacing their unit from the walls depending on the master policy. In some cases, your individual co-op insurance policy may only have to cover personal belongings, updates to the unit and liability within the unit.

Either way, individual co-op insurance policies typically don’t have to rebuild the main building structure, which is one of the more expensive factors. This means co-op insurance policies tend to be cheaper than homeowners insurance.

Why you may need co-op insurance

Since the master co-op policy won’t cover you completely, you need to purchase an individual co-op insurance policy. Individual co-op insurance can protect you from liability of accidents within your unit as well as cover your belongings and upgrades to your unit. 

If your master co-op policy has exceptions such as no water damage, flood or earthquake coverage, individual co-op policies may be able to insure you for these issues. 

If your master co-op policy doesn’t have enough coverage or has high deductibles, it is possible certain individual co-op insurance policies can help you cover these costs.

What does your individual co-op insurance policy cover?

Figuring out what your individual co-op insurance policy covers will depend on the particular policy you buy. Here are some guidelines to help you get started.

If your co-op insures most everything

If your co-op master policy insures your building, the walls of your unit and your fixtures, your individual co-op insurance policy may not have to.

Instead, your individual co-op insurance policy will focus on protecting your personal belongings, called personal property, and any liability you may have.

In this case, it often makes sense to get tenants or renters insurance policy. These policies provide coverage for personal property and liability.

Carefully examine the limits of coverage you choose. Liability coverage kicks in when something happens within your unit that could result in a loss to you. For instance, if someone slips and falls and has to go to the hospital, liability insurance may cover their hospital bills.

Pay attention to your personal property limits, as well. If a fire burns down your unit and all of your belongings, it can get expensive to replace them. 

You can accumulate a lot of stuff over time and it’s easy to forget how much every little thing costs. When you have to replace it, you may realize you didn’t have enough coverage.

Make sure you understand if your policy offers loss assessment coverage. Loss assessment coverage can cover you if your master policy doesn’t have enough coverage for a potential loss. It may also cover you if something happens in your co-op that the master policy doesn’t cover, such as an earthquake or water damage.

When this happens, your co-op may create an assessment that charges all co-op owners a portion of the loss that wasn’t covered so repairs can be completed or the liability owed can be paid.

If your co-op coverage stops at your walls

If your co-op insurance stops at your walls, you’ll need a more in-depth policy. In addition to the personal property and liability insurance discussed above, you’ll also need coverage to rebuild the inside of your unit.

This insurance will be more costly because of the extra insured costs. Make sure you purchase enough coverage to replace your unit as it stands now, not as it was originally built. 

If you make changes that increase the value of your fixtures, be sure to increase your policy coverage, as well.

What co-op insurance doesn’t cover

Your individual co-op insurance policy may not cover every possible claim. For that reason, it’s extremely important you read the boring and dry insurance policy. The policy may be boring, but it details everything your policy does and does not cover. 

If you find a gap in your policy, such as water damage, earthquake damage or flood damage, consider getting insurance to cover the gaps in your policy. 

Your current policy may offer riders that add these coverages to your policy at an additional cost or you may have to buy a separate policy to cover some of these items, such as floods.

Your insurance policy will only cover you up to your limits. Any claims above your limits will not be paid out. If you have $50,000 of personal property coverage and $100,000 of your personal property is burned in a fire, you’ll only receive $50,000 less your deductible.

What to look for in co-op insurance

When you’re looking for any insurance policy, including co-op insurance, you need to carefully consider who you purchase your policy through. Make sure the company has a strong financial rating, which means there should be a high likelihood they’ll be able to pay out your claim.

You also want to take a close look at the policy itself to make sure there aren’t a ton of exclusions and it covers what you need it to. 

Make sure your policy covers what your co-op’s master policy doesn’t. If there are many exclusions your rate may be lower, but you may not have the coverage you need when it comes time to make a claim.

Don’t forget to look at customer service ratings, as well. If you have to make a claim, you’ll most likely be in a stressful situation. Companies with great customer service and a history of not arguing over the claim amount may be worth paying a little extra for.

How are co-op insurance rates determined?

Co-op insurance rates take a wide variety of factors into consideration when determining your rates. Each insurer has its own formula for calculating rates, so you may find different rates for the same coverage at different insurers.

Two of the biggest factors considered are the amount of coverage in your policy and the risk that the insurance company will have to pay out a claim. 

This makes sense when you think about it. The lower the policy coverage and the lower the likelihood of a claim, the less insurance companies will have to payout.

Insurance companies use a number of factors to come to these determinations including location, local statistics, your past claim history, the property’s past claim history, the age of your co-op, features of your co-op that may reduce the likelihood of damage or claims, such as fire sprinklers, and more.

If you are considering buying into a co-op or already own shares in a co-op, make sure you understand the co-op’s master insurance policy and the coverage you need.

Disgusted !!! bad show Co Op

Disgusted that I received my renewal quote 1 month after it had been posted out to me , therefore no time to shop around . I received no email informing me of the change to a brokerage . My insurance has doubled , even though I have made no claims in 3 yrs , have 8 yrs no claims , and changed my career from a chef to an assistant manager . I was given no explanation by the broker as to why the premium increased due to my career change ( it went up by 10.00) no reward for honesty there is there ? I changed my car insurance to the Co Op because they gave personal service after I had had to deal with a broker before . I have banked with them for years , refusing to switch to other banks when offered rewards to do so , i am a co op member and travel with them, I was not notified by them that the personal service had now stopped and a broker had taken over . I am now stuck in an overpriced policy for another year , until I can switch to an another insurance company. I feel totally ripped off ! and the female broker needs to polish up on her personal skills as well as customer service skills , she was like a robot ! Absolutely disgusted ! Update : The day after leaving the above review I received a call from the Co-op and the gentleman left a voicemail informing me that they would call again , so far I have not received another call . Unfortunately , I go to work and was unable to answer my phone when he called . I am disappointed that there has been no further attempt to contact me

As a CO-OP member second time of using, liking the 10% off also as I am just over 70 and they cover this. The level of 3 different types of cover were well set out and easy to look at and we're not overly expensive. I compared to others and found it was a good price.

Bought my husband's travel insurance and was impressed by the ease of obtaining and price of his policy. Having had health issues recently I thought I'd try. The cover offered was excellent at a very competitive price. Would certainly recommend the Co-op for travel insurance and will be trying them when other insurances come up for renewal.

Annual travel insurance for elderly.

Bought this week, searched many websites, and quite shocked at some of the quotes I was given. We are fit elderly people on medication for minor illnesses, and was quoted horrendous costs. The Co-op made buying our travel insurance easy and at a reasonable price too.

I am 92yrs old and live alone

I am 92yrs old and live alone, I recently got my Co-op House insurance renewal policy letter, last year (2023) I paid £151 and this year it had gone up to £904. I have never claimed on a house insurance policy for over 60yrs since I have lived here! I rang them suggesting there must be some mistake, the call handler originally started to laugh and said let’s have a look at this, is it about the price you are phoning about? She then went on to say it’s nothing to do with the Co-op, they have 3 brokers who deal with the house insurance and one of them called ‘prestige’ had sent that quote, she had a look at another one and said we can do it for £354. I politely told her where to take her house insurance and stated that the letter I received was headed by Co-op insurance and not once did it state any other company involved! This is absolutely disgraceful behaviour from a well established company that I have trusted for many years, I may have been on automatic renewal and at 92 you find it harder to deal with these kind of issues. Never again will I trust the Co-op and I was born in the birthplace of the Co-op and grew up trusting their policies! My son helped me change over to the Swinton house insurance company and my premium is now £136. Disgraceful behaviour by Co-op! I have edited this to update people on this incident, they have NOT contacted me to discuss this matter, it’s just another way of them trying to show they care for anyone reading this review! Pretending they are concerned!

Following a claim after a holiday the beginning of May I am unable to get hold of anyone and emails go unresponded to apart from an automated response to say it is received. The one contact by email I had asked for things a month after I'd provided them already so I already guessed then that nothing had progressed It says someone will contact you and no one does . You are unable to speak to anyone by phone. It makes an already horrible experience worse.

Avoid trade at all costs with these shambolic imbeciles, they couldn’t book an appointment, let alone a holiday. Thick staff did not send out documents and holiday was a complete disaster. Refused to honour price match guarantee. Lied about booking details and continue to lie, and refuse to accept responsibility for their procedural errors and deplorable service. So called customer services are as thick as dense fog, just don’t get it, don’t understand plainly worded English, you could draw them a diagram, they still wouldn’t. Co op travel Sutton coldfield

Brought a holiday. Then the following day needed an alteration. Checked online and it was only £24 extra to upgrade the room...tried amending ticket myself online but you can only do changes through agent...went to agent who said prices are different online and then quoted the alteration as £175 through co op...asked if I can get a refund, they said if I do I'll loose the deposit which was the full price of the ticket! So in hine sight best to miss out the middle man and buy direct through Jet2 or whoever your flight is with online

Grantham Store

Used Grantham store on countless occasions. Nothing is too much trouble. I normally use Hannah who is totally professional and can be relied on to carry things out. Hopefully we will continue to use them and keep receiving an exceptional service. Only one thing missing is a coffee machine.

Spalding co-op Travel Agents

Visited our local Coop travel agents to book a holiday in October. We was greeted by a representative who never smiled once. We explained what we was looking for and throughout our time there she never smiled engaged in any conversation and didn’t appear to want to help. She made both me & my husband feel uncomfortable and unworthy. We left after 20-30 mins due to this with no holiday booked. Disappointing customer service.

Harwich coop, dont bother booking there

Harwich coop So after my mums holiday wasnt arranged properly and didnt get picked up from airport as arranged, after 20 phone calls to shop i was forced to visit and they wonder why i got irate after listening to their pack of lies. Low and behold the same happened on return journey and they didnt care, had two weeks to sort out and still couldnt be bothered, staffs attitude was terrible. Get a cab and keep receipt was their reply to my elderly mother.

Tried to claim compensation for parking and was first told we would get £200 each in refund then told it would be vouchers September and still being fobbed off It’s a joke could and will do a better job myself Will never use again Manager is right miserable thing too terrible customer service

Definitley won't be using CO-OP insurance for anything

I first purchased travel insurance with CO-OP in 2019, we were meant to go on holiday to Mauritius in 2020. Due to COVID restrictions we wasn't able to fly. The travel company refunded any monies paid. with no issues. Tried to cancel the insurance was a totally different matter. I ended up just letting it go, even though I know I shouldn't Then bought travel insurance for our next trip in October 2022. type of cover was Annual Multi-trip (Gold). 3 days into our holiday my wallet was stolen. Made the claim when I got home, thinking as I purchased the gold option there would be no problem with my claim. How wrong was I After going through all the forms submitted police reports, proof of monies drawn out etc. Was told that the money was not attended by myself and not in your locked accommodation, therefore I am unable to consider your claim any further on this occasion. How am I supposed to pay for anything outside of my accommodation without my wallet?? Is theft not covered then ??? Will I be using CO-OP travel insurance again.... No If anyone asks me is CO-OP travel insurance good to use....NO

Worst experience of a travel insurance…

Worst experience of a travel insurance company. Absolute catalogue of errors. Cancelled my policy on the day of my 4 month trip without my consent. Ended up having to buy 3 policies with 2 being refunded. Staff seem to put you on hold every 2 minutes was on the phone for over 2 hours in total. The last thing I need before a once in a lifetime holiday. I wouldn’t recommend. Absolutely terrible.

Coop Travel Market Harborough

Hopefully this is the correct Midcounties Coop travel company ?? I cannot fault the Market Harborough Branch. The staff are extremely good and thorough when dealing with my bookings and this is the reason why i will not go anywhere else. If I have any queries or problems regarding any parts of my holidays, they always deal with them very quickly. This is why I book with people that you can talk to (face to face) not a faceless web site whith no one to take ownership.

Just book direct with tui etc and save the hassle!

Have not been impressed with the Walsall branch since it’s new management. Was told the wrong price when we asked how much was left to pay on our holiday. When we called up to pay it they paid it off somebody else’s holiday instead! They did sort this out when they realised but this was only when the other person called to pay off their holiday and were shocked to find it had already been mostly paid off. It would have been much easier to book direct with tui in terms of being able to log on and make payments, that would have also been much more reliable.

Just booked with Co-op Travel in Spalding with a fab lady called Sophie there she listened was not pushy at all found us a great holiday but we went away to think on it.I rang back the same day found another holiday different hotel different company had it ,and within 20 minutes she has got it cheaper all booked with everything we asked for .Really pleased and the Shop in Spalding is allways busy but the staff are polite friendly and for me done a excellent job ..

Phone booking Walsall

Terrible customer service, booked cruise last year, paid in full back in February, cruise cancelled on the 25th March and promised a refund but here we are nearly 3 months later still not got it. Have called several times, very few times have we got through, left our phone number and twice they haven’t even bothered to phone back. Also never had a reply from email. Avoid

Co-op travel is not just an online store, it has branches up and down the country. In fact youre better off booking at one of the branches because the website is pretty naff. Prices are very competitive. One good thing about co-op travel is that it is unlikely to go bust because it does not just specialise in holidays. Over the years people have respected the co-op for the way that it gives back to the customers.

Shocking!!!

Shocking!!! I’ve been awaiting an update on my holiday for weeks as to whether it will be going ahead. I was told not no pay my final balance until they could update me further on 15th March. Chased the update on the 15th, no response, followed up again on morning of 16th. Was in a meeting 2pm till 6pm, received a response at 3pm stating I had till 5pm to pay my full balance or holiday cancelled! Obviously missed this totally unfair deadline after months of chasing and being fobbed off.. Following weeks of looking at transferring dates and being totally ripped off by co-op travel (£3k - £4k more expensive than TUI after being initially cheaper with booking) I’m appalled that they are still in operation treating customers like this! I’ve now passed this and evidence to my solicitors to deal with!

Poor Customer Service

Poor Customer Service. I've just spent an hour on the phone dealing with JTA travel direct. I booked through Co-op Travel in Lowestoft and they can't be bothered to deal with this for me. Co-op had a joint venture with Thomas Cook and they would have been paid their commission on this and another holiday I've also had to sort out myself. Rubbish customer service and I certainly won't use them again. Surely common sense would tell you to deal with this for the customer in the hope they'll come back and book more holidays. These are the first holidays I've booked through an agent in over 10 years and I won't be doing it again.

    Definitley won't be using CO-OP insurance for anything. I first purchased travel insurance with CO-OP in 2019, we were meant to go on holiday to Mauritius in 2020. Due to COVID restrictions we wasn't able to fly. The travel company refunded any monies paid. with no issues. Tried to cancel the insurance was a totally different matter.
