Oranjestad Cruise Port Guide

When you hear the word “Aruba,” a few things immediately come to mind: turquoise, clear waters, year-round sunshine, and white sand beaches. And it’s true—Aruba lives up to the hype. It’s an unquestionable oasis, which you’ll quickly discover when you set off on a Southern Caribbean cruise . Some say Aruba is difficult to beat as far as paradise goes. The motto of Aruba is “one happy island,” and both locals and visitors make that motto come true every day of the year.

On cruises to Aruba, you’ll dock at the island’s capital and port city, Oranjestad. From there, the choices are endless. You could easily spend your entire time in Aruba on a beach or drinking a refreshing cocktail at any of the beachiest bars. However, on cruises that go to Aruba, you’ll discover more history and nature preservation efforts than you might expect, which you’ll experience on excursions to the Aruba Butterfly Farm, a trip to the National Archeological Museum, or at the Santa Cruz Donkey Sanctuary.

View All Cruises to Oranjestad, Aruba

Top sights & attractions for cruises to oranjestad, national archeological museum.

The National Archaeological Museum of Aruba gives visitors an understanding of life on the island long before European settlement. Come here to catch a glimpse of artifacts dating back to 2500 BC. The museum is housed in a restored colonial home that once belonged to a wealthy 20th century merchant.

You’ll likely be able to see the Hooiberg volcanic formation from almost anywhere on the island of Aruba. When you’re ready, get up close and personal with the so-called “haystack,” which is over 500 feet tall. Climb the hundreds of restored steps to the summit of Hooiberg, which promises incredible, lush views of the entire island below you. It’s a great opportunity to hike and take unforgettable photos of the island’s beautiful landscape.

Eagle Beach

Eagle Beach and the surrounding resort area consistently ranks as one of the world’s best beaches, and it’s easy to see why. White sand, shady trees, and thatched umbrellas await, whether you want to sunbathe or dip in the ocean. Eagle Beach is also a leatherback turtle nesting area, so be aware that some parts of the beach may be closed to accommodate the nesting process.

Learn More About Oranjestad Shore Excursions

Top things to do in oranjestad, see the aruba butterfly farm.

A unique habitat for thousands of butterflies, moths, and plants, the butterfly farm is a must-experience activity for nature lovers, kids, and families. A guided tour will walk you through the entire caterpillar-to-butterfly transformation. Informative and incredible, there aren’t many other butterfly farms quite like this.

Check out the Bon Bini Festival

On cruises to Aruba, don’t miss the chance to see the Bon Bini Festival, a weekly celebration that happens each Tuesday evening. It’s a great way to learn about Aruban cultural practices, including traditional dances, local art, and folklore.

See the Donkey Sanctuary

Venture beyond Oranjestad to the Santa Cruz Donkey Sanctuary, which is dedicated to saving the island’s donkeys and rehabilitating them. Donkey feedings are a fun activity you can do with the kids while educating them about how to treat precious animals.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Oranjestad Cruise Port

One of the top reasons people flock to Aruba is for its food scene, where fresh seafood rules the menu and is presented in interesting and delicious ways. Mahi-mahi, lionfish, and grouper are the most popular options. Aruban food is greatly influenced by flavors of the Caribbean as well as its earlier Dutch colonization. While you’re here on a cruise to Aruba, try keshi yena, a ball of cheese steamed or fried and stuffed with meat, or one of the many varieties of soups and stews. There’s cool island soup, which is a nectar of different fruit juices destined to cool you down on a hot day. Don’t forget to check out the fluffy pan bati, a sweet flatbread that is usually paired with something savory.

Culture & History of the Oranjestad Cruise Port

Cruises to Aruba have been a staple of the island’s economy for decades, and you’d be hard-pressed to find an Aruban who isn’t friendly to cruise passengers. Aruba’s climate is just one of the reasons it became so popular for tourism in recent years, since it’s beautiful, dry, and sunny almost year round. The first inhabitants of Aruba were a group called the Arawak, and in 1499, the Spanish arrived. Smuggling and piracy became common practices on the island. By the 1630s, the Dutch took control of Aruba. It took until 1986 for Aruba to gain its independence. The expansion into tourism happened as a way to rebuild the economy after the Aruban oil refinery closed down. Today, travel and tourism fuels the economy of the island. Official languages spoken in Aruba are Dutch and Papiamentu, a creole language that emerged from a blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish.

Oranjestad Port Facilities & Location

The port of Oranjestad is located on the southwestern part of the island of Aruba, and most cruises that go to Aruba will dock here. The port has standard amenities like ATMs, a souvenir shop, and a tourism information center. The port is conveniently close to shopping, restaurants, and the famous Aruba waterfront.

Transportation in Oranjestad

The port is centrally located near shops and restaurants, so it’s an easy transition to go from cruise ship to shopping. Here, you’ll find mostly strip malls and shopping centers like the Royal Plaza Shopping Center and the Renaissance Marketplace. Find a local store that sells Dutch chocolates and coffee to bring back as mementos from your time in Aruba.

Shopping Near the Oranjestad Cruise Port

Local currency & tipping customs.

The official currency of Aruba is the Aruban florin (Afl), but U.S. dollars are commonly accepted in most places. ATMs are prevalent on the island, and many hotels and restaurants will accept credit cards today, too. Tipping isn’t a very common practice in Aruba, but leaving 10% for your taxi driver and 15% for your server at a restaurant is polite. There may already be a service charge included in your restaurant bill.

Cruises from Miami to Aruba

Aruba, one of the three ABC islands in the southern Caribbean, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. As a matter of fact, you can easily get there by taking one of the cruises that depart out of Miami.

Miami welcomes many cruise ships throughout the year at PortMiami cruise terminals, offering a wide range of itineraries to Aruba. A cruise out of Miami is one of the most popular ways to experience the Caribbean islands. Most of the world’s largest cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , Oceania Cruises , Royal Caribbean , and Virgin Voyages , are based in Miami.

Known as the “Cruise Capital of the World,” Miami also offers a varied range of cultures and activities. South Florida’s cultural and economic heart, with one of the busiest and most beautiful ports, is a beautiful city. Once you’re there, it is worth exploring before or after going on a cruise to Aruba. Discover the city’s legendary nightlife as well as stunning Miami Beach. Enjoy traditional Cuban cuisine in Little Havana or stunning architecture in the Art Deco Historic District. There are endless activities and things to do there.

So, if you want to relax before or after your cruise to Aruba, Miami is the right place to be.

Aruba, Dutch Caribbean

Aruba

Together with Bonaire and Curacao, Aruba forms a group referred to as the ABC islands. Unlike much of the Caribbean region, Aruba has a dry climate and an arid, cactus-strewn landscape. Constant trade winds bring cool breezes and cause the divi-divi trees to slope southwesterly. European influence shows in architecture that features Dutch gables painted in tropical pastels. It’s also evident in language, with English, Dutch, and Spanish spoken alongside the local tongue, Papiamento. The pastel façades of Oranjestad landmarks and shops lend an inviting and playful vibe to the capital city.

Cruise to Aruba Guide: Find the perfect one for you!

Oct 25, 2019, jennifer richardson.

So you're planning your next cruise with Aruba on the itinerary...

So, you're planning your next cruise with Aruba on the itinerary? Good idea! When it comes to vacations, there’s nothing like going on an Aruba cruise: from stunning ocean views to fun-filled excursions at various ports along the way—cruises are truly one of the best ways to see the world while enjoying luxurious, all-inclusive amenities. With a cruise docking in Aruba, it’s possible to see the very best of the Caribbean in a single, unforgettable trip. In this article, we’ll explore some of the best cruises to and around Aruba. There’s a lot to discover, so let’s get into it!

Why take a cruise to Aruba?

In Aruba, guests are treated to sunshine that just won’t quit, and the island consistently ranks as having the fewest number of rainy days in the Southern Caribbean. Besides the persistent, 82-degree weather, Aruba is also one of the safest places to visit in the Caribbean and there’s a lot to explore – whether you like an active trip or you’re looking for a more laidback experience. Indeed, Aruba has earned its nickname of the “One happy island”. With this knowledge, it is obvious that Aruba is a great destination during your cruise.

When taking a cruise to Aruba, the cruise ship will arrive at Oranjestad Aruba Cruise Port, which is conveniently located within walking distance of various restaurants, bars, shops, and fun activities like Jeep Safari Tours. However, it’s best to plan your Aruba adventure so you can make the most of your time on the island. There are plenty of things to do in Aruba, so it’s best to start planning as soon as you can! Do you want to spend some money in the Aruban stores, bars or restaurants? There’s no need to worry about currency exchanges, as the U.S. Dollar is accepted everywhere.

There are a number of cruise lines that regularly go to Aruba with their beautiful cruise ships, for example Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and many more. We have listed all the interesting cruise lines for you so you can find out which one can offer the perfect cruise through the lovely Caribbean for you!

Best cruises to Aruba

Choosing the right cruise to Aruba can be tricky, especially since there are so many options of cruise ships which are heading to the beautiful Aruba – but don’t worry, we’ve done most of the research for you! So, without further ado, we present to you our top picks for cruises to Aruba:

Carnival Cruises

Carnival stands apart from other companies on this list, as they’re by far the largest and most diverse cruise line on the planet. Explore the Breeze cruise ship: this cruise liner offers 8-day cruises spanning Fort Lauderdale, Grand Turk, La Romana, Aruba, and Curacao, making it an ideal choice for travelers who want to experience everything the Caribbean has to offer.

The Breeze cruise ship also features premium amenities, such as an onboard waterpark known as WaterWorks – that’s right, this cruise ship has a massive waterpark located right on the ship! Other amenities include an onboard theater featuring full-blown musical productions, a daycare for kids, and a luxurious spa. For food, Breeze offers a whole host of dining options, ranging from gourmet burgers to pizza and Mexican favorites.

Accommodations on this ship include 4 room types, ranging from Interior Cabins perfect for couples to Ocean Suites featuring balconies and spacious interiors capable of sleeping 4 guests. Needless to say, no matter what you’re looking for in cruise to Aruba, Carnival Cruises has something for everyone!

Royal Caribbean Cruise Aruba

Besides Carnival, no other cruise line has the brand recognition of Royal Caribbean. The company operates 4 of the largest cruise ships in the entire world! If you’re looking for the best cruises to Aruba, Royal Caribbean has some of the best offerings in the industry. For example, an 11-night cruise spanning, Boston, San Juan, Willemstad, Oranjestad, George Town, and Tampa aboard the Brilliance of the Sea cruise liner.

Aboard the Brilliance of the Sea, travelers will find top-notch amenities, like a 40 ft. rock climbing wall, mini-golf, an arcade, shopping, live music, a spa and fitness center, and so much more!

Brilliance of the Sea also offers several premium bars and lounges. If you’d prefer to stay near the pool, Brilliance of the Sea also offers a Pool Bar serving up delicious frozen drinks. Got a little hungry? There are a lot of tasty options to try out!

Accommodations aboard the Brilliance of the Sea include rooms perfect for babies, couples, and large families. No matter what you’re looking for, Royal Caribbean has you covered: want a spacious interior room that’s elegantly decorated? Check! A suite with its own private balcony and lounge chairs? No problem!

Norwegian Cruise Line

Even though it may not be as big as the previous entries on this list, Norwegian Cruise Line is still a top pick for cruises to Aruba. Norwegian Cruise Line was recently named the “Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Line” for the 7th consecutive year at the World Travel Awards, making it one of the best cruise lines for the southern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers unique amenities that can’t be found on any other cruise liner. On vessels such as the Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss, and Norwegian Encore, guests can enjoy race tracks and open-air laser tag courses. In addition, some ships even come with a quarter-mile-long oceanfront promenade where guests can indulge in interesting conversation and breathtaking views.

If you want to experience some of these modern amenities and accommodations, Norwegian Cruise Line offers a 21-day trip that spans California, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Santa Maria, Oranjestad, Willemstad, and New York. If 21-days at sea are too much, Norwegian Cruise Line also offers shorter, 7-day trips that span Puerto Rico, Oranjestad, Kralendijk, Castries, and Basseterre aboard the Norwegian Epic.

Celebrity Cruises

For the 2nd year in a row, Celebrity Cruises (a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean) has won the annual award for Best Southern Caribbean Cruise Line from Cruise Critic. The company takes great pride in differentiating itself from the rest of the pack by bringing together world-class architects, interior designers, and landscape artists for the perfect experience.

Celebrity Summit offers a wide range of dining options, including the Tuscan Grill – an Italian ristorante serving handmade pasta, artisanal salumi, and butcher-cut meats – and Sushi on Five, a Japanese restaurant serving authentically prepared sushi and other Japanese specialties. For lounges and bars, Celebrity Summit includes 5 unique places to get your drink on, including Cellar Masters – an elegant lounge featuring 400 wines from all over the world – and the Sunset Bar offering spectacular views and a country club-esque atmosphere.

Accommodations aboard the Celebrity Summit include 5 room types, including Inside, Ocean View, Veranda, Concierge Class, AquaClass, and Suites. When choosing between the best cruises to Aruba, we recommend this 7-day trip spanning San Juan, Basseterre, Oranjestad, Willemstad, and Kralendijk aboard the Celebrity Summit.

Regent Cruise Line

If it’s luxury that you’re after, then it doesn’t get any better than Regent Cruise Line (a subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line). The company has been chosen as the world’s top-rated cruise line six times by readers of Conde Nast Traveler and other travel magazines—helping establish it as a leader in the 6-star cruise line industry.

Amenities aboard the Seven Seas Explorer include 7 world-class restaurants, like Prime 7 – a handsomely decorated restaurant serving up the very best filet mignons and côte de boeuf – and a pool grill for casual dining. For entertainment, Seven Seas Explorer has a full-fledged casino where you can try your luck at Blackjack, roulette, poker, slot machines, and full-sized craps tables. If gambling isn’t your thing, there’s also the Constellation Theater where guests can enjoy full-scale musical revues and cabaret shows.

When going on a southern Caribbean cruise, Regent Cruises offers a 12-night cruise aboard the Seven Seas Explorer spanning Miami, Oranjestad, Willemstad, Kralendijk, St. George’s, Castries, and many more must-see Caribbean locations!

Princess Cruises

Like Regent Cruises, Princess Cruises is a luxury-focused cruise line offering high-class amenities, captivating live shows, and technology packages like keyless entry to make your embarkment smooth and enjoyable. The Regal Princess also is equipped with Princess Medallion Class amenities which includes a “wearable” device called the OceanMedallion™, which enables an entirely new level of service and personalized attention.

If you’re looking for something to do aboard the Regal Princess, you can expect a wide variety of entertainment options including shows, musicals, standup comedy, and even an exclusive open-air poolside amphitheater to watch feature films while cozying up under the stars.

Princess Cruises offers a 10-day cruise spanning across New York City, St. Maarten, Antigua, Aruba, Ft. Lauderdale aboard the Regal Princess. Not a fan of long trips? Princess Cruises also offers shorter, 8-day trips that span Ft. Lauderdale, Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands, and a return trip to the original port aboard the Sky Princess.

Holland America Line

The Holland America Line, subsidiary of Carnival Cruises, is a winner of several prestigious awards. To get to Aruba, we recommend this 10-day cruise spanning Fort Lauderdale, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Kralendijk, Willemstad, and of course, Oranjestad. This cruise takes you aboard the Volendam, a mid-sized vessel featuring great amenities and activities.

The Volendam features Club HAL, where kids aged 3-17 can engage in arts and crafts, sports, video game competitions, scavenger hunts, challenging team games, and themed parties – all under the supervision of a professionally trained staff! This vessel also houses a variety of exciting places to eat, like the Lido Market which features freshly baked bread and pastries, hearty salads, hand-carved meats, fish, and much more. For a little more sophistication, there’s also The Dining Room which offers elegant breakfasts and multi-course dinners.

Accommodations on this vessel include 5 room types: Inside, Ocean View, Lanai, Vista Suite, and the Neptune & Pinnacle Suite.

Disney Cruise Line

The magic of Aruba meets the wonder of Disney when Disney Cruise Line sails to Oranjestad. Aboard the ship, first-run movies from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and 20th Century Fox could be playing – Avengers: Endgame at sea, anyone? On the upper decks, guests can find a variety of pools – from interactive splash zones to serene adult retreats that make it easy to get the tan you’ve always wanted.

For those who are hungry from all the excitement, the Disney Wonder offers an endless array of options. With Rotational Dining, guests can experience a different restaurant and a different menu every night of the voyage. Snack options are conveniently located around the ship, and soda, water, coffee, and hot chocolate is included in the cruise fare.

Accommodations come in four main categories, ranging from Inside cabins with porthole-shaped mirrors to the limited-availability Concierge Royal Suite—a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom retreat with Concierge services. No matter what you could be looking for in a cruise to Aruba and beyond, Disney Cruise Line offers options for the entire family.

Cruise Ships Can Now Connect to Shore Power at PortMiami

PortMiami officially has shore power.

Cruise ships visiting the port can now plug in for electricity, which means they don’t have to use their engines and burn fuel while docked. This can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut down on noise.

The port can provide up to 16 megawatts per ship, with the power coming from individual Florida Power and Light substations at each terminal, according to the Miami Herald .

While docked, the amount of electricity one cruise ship will use is equivalent to the power consumption of roughly 10,000 households for one day.

Executives from five major cruise companies were on hand for a celebratory event on Monday, per the Miami Herald: Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Group, Virgin Voyages , Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises.

“Shore power has been my personal dream and initiative,” says Daniella Levine Cava, mayor of Miami-Dade County. “Shore power is a great example of progress in tourism and clean energy converging. Together, we are creating jobs, expanding our economy and preparing to meet the dynamic needs of tomorrow.”

Carnival Conquest became the first ship to plug into landside electrical power in Miami. Next in line to try out the new service are Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas , Virgin Voyages’ Valiant Lady, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Joy, and MSC Cruises’ Magnifica. The port hopes to connect 21 individual vessels to shore power by the end of this year for a total of 350 vessel calls.

Carnival’s executives said they were thrilled to be able to connect to shore power in Miami. The company achieved its 2030 shore power goal seven years early in 2023 and, now, two-thirds of its fleet is capable of connecting to shore power.

"Using shoreside electricity to power our ships in port is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize our environmental footprint," says Josh Weinstein, chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "It's been over 20 years since our company first pioneered shore power for the cruise industry, yet adoption remains limited to just 2% of cruise ports worldwide. We applaud PortMiami for having the vision to recognize shore power as vital to the future of our industry and the planet, and for being at the forefront of their peer group in delivering this capability to cruise ships."

Russian military exercises in the Caribbean: Here's what to expect

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: June 12, 2024 / 8:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Three Russian ships and a nuclear-powered submarine arrived in Cuban waters Wednesday ahead of military exercises  in the Caribbean. While the exercises aren't considered a threat to the U.S., American ships were deployed to shadow the Russians, U.S. officials told CBS News.

The Russian warships  were seen arriving in Havana's harbor on Wednesday morning and were expected to stay in Cuba until Monday. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday the U.S. was closely monitoring the Russian ships.

"We have seen this kind of thing before and we expect to see this kind of thing again," Sullivan said.

The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that the submarine is nuclear powered but it isn't carrying nuclear weapons, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reported. White House national security spokesman John Kirby told CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O'Keefe last week that there was no indication nuclear weapons would be "at play" during the vessels' time in the Caribbean.

What Russian ships are in Cuba?

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the three Russian ships are a frigate, a fleet oil tanker and a salvage tug. The three ships and the submarine headed across the Atlantic separately, Martin reported.

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrives at Havana's harbor, June 12, 2024.

Russia has used the frigate, the Admiral Gorshkov, to test its Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles , according to the Reuters news agency.

Two American destroyers and two ships that tow sonar equipment behind them were shadowing the submarine, Martin reported. Another destroyer and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter were shadowing the three Russian ships. The U.S. Navy also used little sailboats fitted with cameras, known as sail drones, to shadow the Russian ships as they got close to Cuba.

The Admiral Gorshkov and the submarine carried out drills in the Atlantic that simulated a missile strike on enemy ships, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov takes part in an exercise on the use of high-precision weapons in the Atlantic Ocean, in this still image from video released June 11, 2024.

While the Russian ships are in Cuba, the U.S. Navy ships shadowing them are expected to wait for the Russians and continue shadowing them when they leave port, Martin reported.

The ships' arrival in Havana — which the Cuban Foreign Ministry said was expected to include the fanfare of one Russian ship firing 21 salvos in a salute to Cuba — comes ahead of Russia carrying out air and naval exercises in the Caribbean in the coming weeks, Martin reported.

The exercises, which will include long-range bombers, will be the first simultaneous air and naval maneuvers Russia has carried out in the Caribbean since 2019, Martin reported. The exercises will be conducted over the summer, culminating in a worldwide naval exercise in the fall.

"Clearly this is them signaling their displeasure about what we're doing for Ukraine ," Kirby told O'Keefe. "So we're going to watch it, we're going to monitor it, it's not unexpected. … But we don't anticipate, we don't expect that there'll be any imminent threat or any threat at all, quite frankly, to American national security in the region, in the Caribbean region, or anywhere else."

The Russian ships are expected to head to Venezuela after Cuba, but it's unclear what the submarine will do, Martin reported.

The Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kazan and the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrive at Havana's harbor, June 12, 2024.

What was the Cuban missile crisis?

The events in the Caribbean are different from the Cuban missile crisis that happened over 60 years ago. The 1962 crisis unfolded after the U.S. discovered launch sites in Cuba for Soviet ballistic nuclear missiles.

Over the course of 13 days, the crisis brought the Soviet Union and the U.S. dangerously close to nuclear war. A potential conflict was averted when the Kennedy administration reached a deal with the Kremlin for the missiles to be removed from Cuba.

NEW YORK (AP) — A cruise ship with some of Broadway’s biggest names — including Tony Award-winner Laura Benanti and Emmy-winner Wayne Brady — will sail from South Florida to Mexico next spring.

The Broadway Cruise  — heading roundtrip from Miami to Cozumel, from March 31-April 4, 2025 — will also feature Tony nominees Shoshana Bean, Eva Noblezada and Alex Brightman, as well as Broadway favorites Corey Cott, Caissie Levy and Solea Pfeiffer.

Tony-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, behind such shows as “Kinky Boots” and “La Cage au Folles,” will discuss creating a show and teach dance classes, while Tony-winning producer Jeffrey Seller — behind such hits as “Hamilton,” “Rent” and “Avenue Q” — will discuss producing hits on Broadway. Will Van Dyke will be the musical director for the cruise.

Producers promise “intimate and grand scale shows and cabarets from Broadway’s coolest talent. You will gain tips and techniques from some of the best and brightest creative talent working today.” There will also be celebrity meet-and-greets and Broadway karaoke.

This will be the third Broadway Cruise, which borrows the Norwegian Gem for its themed trips. Patrons can see performances at everything from the 850-seat Stardust Theater to the Pool Deck Stage, which fits 2,000 or the Atrium Stage, which fits 300.

“With two incredibly successful trips under our belt, The Broadway Cruise is now an annual tradition,” Scott Zeiger, executive producer for EBG Solutions, said in a statement. “If you love Broadway, there is no vacation more fulfilling and exciting than being on our complete ship takeover with today’s biggest talent”.
