Abu Dhabi Tourist SIMs and UAE eSIMs explained

Are you planning on visiting Abu Dhabi soon? We’re guessing you will want to stay connected during your stay and will need an Abu Dhabi tourist SIM card!

As well as being a rather photogenic city, it’s fairly necessary to have internet when travelling these days. From retrieving travel booking details to ordering taxis and meals while you’re on the go – trust us, there’s an app for everything in the UAE !

Although you’ll get access to a Wi-Fi network in most places in Abu Dhabi, what if you’re on the go? That’s when you’ll need a travel SIM in Abu Dhabi to make calls, use social media, or use Maps to navigate the city or call a driver.

For your convenience, we have put together everything you need to know about getting a SIM card in Abu Dhabi for tourists and eSIM options you can arrange before your arrival.

1. Du SIM Card in Abu Dhabi for Tourists

2. etisalat abu dhabi tourist sim, 3. virgin mobile travel sim in abu dhabi, airalo esim, kitmytrip – via getyourguide, frequently asked questions (faqs) on abu dhabi tourist sims.

Since we first wrote this article the new Zayed International Airport has opened! We’ll update you soon on exactly where to find the mobile phone operator counters and if we see any better airport deals than what we describe below.

Mobile Operators in the UAE

Getting an Abu Dhabi tourist SIM is a pretty straightforward process. However, there are multiple mobile operators in the UAE, so it gets somewhat confusing for tourists to decide which mobile network SIM they should use based on the packages offered.

However, there’s no need to worry, as we have simplified everything for you! Below, you will find a list of mobile operators in the UAE with information about purchasing their SIM and which operator is the most suitable for you.

Any Sim/eSim purchased for Abu Dhabi works in Dubai and all of the emirates of the UAE .

Du is a mobile operator in UAE, which was launched in 2007. Du offers tourists arriving at DXB – Dubai International Airport a free SIM card , but unfortunately, the same offer has not been extended to arrivals at AUH airport.

That said, the Du tourist SIM offer only includes 1GB of data preloaded and only lasts 24 hours – great for stopover passengers – not so great if you’ll be in Abu Dhabi a little bit longer.

du abu dhabi tourist sim

You can purchase a Du pre-paid SIM card from its franchise store across the city. Buying the SIM without any package will cost around AED 10; however, if you activate a bundle package (starting from AED 49), you’ll get the SIM for free. You’ll need your passport to get started.

Presently, these are the best Tourist SIM options from Du:

  • 2GB valid for 28 days with 30 flexi minutes – AED 49 ($13.35 USD)
  • 6GB valid for 28 days with 30 flexi minutes, unlimited internet calls – AED 99 ($27 USD)
  • 10GB valid for 28 days with 30 flexi minutes, unlimited internet calls – AED 139 ($37.85 USD)
  • 20GB valid for 28 days with 30 flexi minutes, unlimited internet calls – AED 189 ($51.46 USD)
  • Online special – unlimited data for 7 days + exclusive attraction discounts – AED 199 ($54.20)

NB – There is now a Du shop at the new international airport! We will report back, but believe you still get the same pricing/deals we’ve mentioned here – TBC on the free Tourist SIM!

Etisalat is the largest and oldest mobile operator in the UAE and is one of the best SIM cards for Abu Dhabi.

etisilate mobile network in the UAE logo from e&

When you land, you can get an Etisalat SIM from the kiosk at Abu Dhabi airport. There are plenty of packages available – these do frequently change, so apologies if the exact deal is not on offer when you arrive in Abu Dhabi; we try to update our Abu Dhabi tourist guides regularly!

  • If you’re only here for less than a day and you’re a light internet user – you can grab a FREE 1GB/24 hr validity Etislat eSim – yup, the same deal as Du, but it doesn’t seem to be openly advertised.
  • The cheapest paid Visitor Line gives you 2GB of data + 30 flexi minutes, valid for 28 days for AED 49 ($13.30 USD).
  • Visitor Line + gives you 4GB of data + 30 flexi minutes valid for 28 days for AED 79 ($21.50 USD)
  • Visitor Line Premium gives you 8GB of data + 120 flexi minutes valid for 28 days for AED 125 ($34 USD)
  • If you’re a heavy online user and caller, go with Visitor Line Premium + 22.5GB of data + 525 flexi minutes valid for 28 days for AED 200 ($54.50 USD), or
  • Unlimited 7 Days – includes 100 flexi minutes for 200 AED ($54.50 USD)

Visitor Line packages are valid for the length of your Visa. Therefore, if you plan on staying in Abu Dhabi long term or change Visa type, you will need to switch to Etisalat’s other pre-paid and post-paid packages.

Virgin Mobile is a newer mobile operator in UAE by the Virgin Mobile brand (though it is a fully owned subsidiary of Du and uses the same network). It offers a good range of tourist SIM cards with different packages to people visiting Abu Dhabi for business or vacations.

You can get the SIM from the airport as soon as you land; however, the tourist SIM is for one-time use. This means you can use it for as long as your package lasts and won’t be able to renew it.

Virgin Mobile offers four packages for its Abu Dhabi tourist SIM, which also include 30 local minutes and 20 international minutes.

  • A 7-day package costs AED 150 with 21GB of data (capped at 3GB per day)
  • A 10-day package costs AED 200 with 40GB of data (capped at 4GB per day)
  • A 15-day package costs AED 300 with unlimited data
  • A 30-day package costs AED 500 with unlimited data

SIMs Sold by Third-Party Companies

If you see online tour operators selling you a SIM card, it will be based on services provided by one of the above three networks.

All should have reliable coverage in metropolitan areas. Beyond that, in the mountains and the desert, it’s time to switch off and get yourself an offline map, as the network will be patchy or non-existent no matter whose network you use (they are all ultimately government-owned and share much of their infrastructure).

We are an affiliate of Airalo and earn a commission on any activated eSim plans.

As international travellers, we’ve become big fans of using Airalo eSIMs whenever possible. The eSIM they sell for the UAE is marketed as “ Burj Mobile ” (digging beneath the cover, we believe it runs on the Etisalat network, so you’ll have no problem with connectivity).

There are currently three different Burj Mobile packages

  • 1GB valid for 7 Days for $8.50 USD (AED 32)
  • 3GB valid for 30 days for $22.50 USD (AED 82.50)
  • 5GB valid for 30 days for $35 USD (AED 128.50)
NB these are all for data only; if you think you’ll need to make phone calls too, you’re better waiting until arrival and getting a local Abu Dhabi SIM with a phone number attached!

a screenshot of the Burj Mobile eSim from Airalo plans available in 2023

Using Airalo is super easy. Once you purchase online, you must press activate and change any existing eSIMs on your phone to the new eSIM. The clock starts ticking as soon as you land and connect to the UAE network.

If you are travelling more widely around the Middle East and just popping into Abu Dhabi briefly, you may also want to look at Airalo’s Middle East option, Menalink , with packages as follows:

  • 1GB valid for 7 Days for $15 USD
  • 2GB valid for 15 days for $28 USD
  • 3GB valid for 30 days for $39 USD

screenshot of avilable MENA esims on airalo

This is another good option only if YOU ARRIVE INTO DXB, as this is where you collect your physical SIM from. Presently, it doesn’t seem to extend to AUH, SHJ, or DWC arrivals.

Do read the fine print if pre-packaged SIM bundles will work for you, only 1 per passport and users must be over 18, so you can’t hand one out to each of the kids. In this instance, families should consider pocket wifi options.

The free tourist SIM is a free SIM card Du Telecommunications offers to tourists arriving in Dubai. This SIM card can be picked up from the immigration counter at Dubai DXB airport and is activated using your passport details. It contains 1GB of free local data valid for 24 hours. Once the time is over, you can recharge your SIM with the various tourist packages offered by Du.

We recommend getting a SIM card from the airport on arrival in Abu Dhabi. The reason? It’s simple, it’s easy, and it’s fast. Plus, multiple SIM card sellers at the airport make buying it straightforward. You must provide your passport details, go through the various packages, and get the SIM. On the other hand, you can also pre-order your SIM card. You have to contact the mobile operator, select a package, and provide your home address in your country. The mobile operator will then mail the SIM card to your address. However, we won’t recommend this option, as it takes too long, plus you never know when you will receive the SIM via mail. Also, what if it gets lost on the way? And this method isn’t suitable if you make a sudden plan to visit Abu Dhabi. eSIM’s, on the other hand, where you don’t need a physical SIM card to be delivered, could be your easiest option these days. Simply activate it as soon as you land, and you’re instantly connected; there is no need to queue at a counter when you get to AUH.

Based on the offers and packages by Du, Etisalat, and Virgin Mobile, the best SIM card for Abu Dhabi is Du. You can quickly insert it into your mobile and get connected almost instantly. Etisalat is also a good option, but it is a bit more expensive, and its Visitors Line’s validity depends on your visa expiration. However, it is a good option if you’re in Abu Dhabi for limited days. Those wanting convenience and a compatible device should try the Airalo eSIM – it’s not the cheapest option but super easy for those who only need a little bit of data an instant connectivity when they land.

Generally speaking, your hotel and places like shopping malls and restaurants will have free wifi, though more than likely, you’ll need to sign up via your social profile or email to access it. We would still recommend the convenience of having your own data over-relying on public wifi if you’re someone who likes to remain connected when you travel. Note that the very recent introduction of Hala Wifi will put Wi-Fi connectivity into city buses and public parks, so there will be a growing range of options for accessing Wi-Fi in Abu Dhabi.

Visitor SIM Cards at Abu Dhabi Airport: An Arrivals Guide

Chris

To help travellers arriving at Abu Dhabi locate a prepaid SIM card, I put this guide together. This guide includes details of which SIM cards are available at Abu Dhabi airport, and maps for each of the terminals showing their locations.

There are two shops currently open in the arrivals area of Abu Dhabi (AUH) airport selling SIM cards to visitors:

Etisalat, the other carrier in the UAE, used to have a booth in the arrivals area as well - however I can’t find it any more. If arriving in the UAE via Dubai airport, both du and Etisalat SIM cards can be purchased there. I’ve written a guide on how to buy a SIM card when arriving at Dubai airport here: https://landinglastminute.com/dubai-sim-card/

All arriving tourists currently get a free SIM card , provided by du and distributed at passport control. It includes 20MB of data and 3 minutes of phone calls. The free SIM of course can be topped up with a minimum amount of 55 AED after the introductory amounts are used.

The du SIM card can be topped up with 500mb of data and 20 minutes of calls for 55 AED, this has 7 day validity 1 . There is a desk in the arrivals area (see map above) for those wanting to easily add this top-up before leaving the airport.

Etisalat has a Visitor Line plan that includes 700mb of data and 40 minutes of calls for 100 AED with 90 days validity. Other mixes of calls and data are available at this price. See below for further details of Etisalat.

Savings can be made by purchasing a regular prepaid SIM card rather than the tourist plans. These are not always available at the airport and staff may offer the tourist prepaid SIM card instead.

Other brands are available to be purchased outside the airport. These may offer better value for people planning to live in Dubai for a while. The brands are:

  • Virgin Mobile, operated on the du network
  • Swyp, operated on the Etisalat network

For short term visitors , I found the du SIM with 55 AED top-up to be the best value when arriving at Abu Dhabi (larger top-ups are available, see below for more details). While other providers have slightly cheaper options available, I found it not worth the hassle of leaving the airport to buy a SIM card if only staying for a few days. If staying longer in Abu Dhabi or the UAE, check out Etisalat and Virgin Mobile plans too.

Buying a Sim Card at Abu Dhabi Airport in 2024

du abu dhabi tourist sim

Are you planning your trip to the United Arabic Emirates and flying to Abu Dhabi and wondering what is the best way to stay connected? Get yourself an e-sim card or buy a prepaid sim card at Abu Dhabi International Airport. How?

This is a complete guide for buying a sim card for traveling to the UAE on arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Find out where to buy a prepaid sim card, up to date prices as per June 2024, my recommendation, the best e-sim cards for the UAE, a vlog about my arrival and experiences, information about international sim cards and more.

Being a full time nomadic travel blogger the first thing I do when I travel to a new country and I do not yet have an e-sim card is buying a prepaid sim card to get connected. It is mostly the cheapest way to get a data connection on your phone. It avoids high roaming costs and you don’t need to struggle with slow overseas data roaming plans.

In this blog I will also highlight the best e-sim cards and international prepaid sim cards for traveling to the UAE.

As Traveltomtom is also on a mission to travel to every country in the world you can find already more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world: Dubai , Europe , Germany , UK , Italy , France , USA , New York , Miami , Canada , Bangkok , Thailand , Bali ,  Saudi Arabia , Vietnam , Maldives , Pakistan , Oman , Singapore  and many more.

Some links in this article about buying a sim card for traveling to Abu Dhabi are affiliate links. If you buy any of the products after using an affiliate link I earn a small commission. This is at absolutely no extra cost to you of course!

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends buying a Virgin Mobile sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport if you use a lot of data, if you just need a couple GB’s Etisalat or DU will both do the job.

But let me tell you that e-sim cards for Dubai that you order on the internet are even cheaper. A Nomad e-sim card with 10 GB data only costs $22 USD. A prepaid sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport with 10 GB data cost $34 USD.

Prices for tourist sim cards at Abu Dhabi Airport are the same as if you buy a prepaid sim card in one of the Etisalat or Du retail stores in the malls in Abu Dhabi.

Therefore Traveltomtom recommends buying a sim card at the airport to get instantly connected for your trip to Abu Dhabi.

Prepaid sim card deals for the UAE are the exact same in Abu Dhabi as in Dubai as I also wrote an article for buying a sim card for Dubai in 2024 .

Arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport - AUH

Airport arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) are much more laid-back compared to its crazy busy neighboring airport Dubai (DXB). AUH Airport is much smaller and navigating through the airport is not that overwhelming.

Also the waiting lines at Abu Dhabi Airport are not that long in general. Depending on the situation I sometimes use Abu Dhabi Airport for traveling to Dubai. A Taxi from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai costs about $100 USD.

After you left the plane you will be directed to immigration. If you have a new passport from one of the eligible countries you can use the e-gates, which makes entering the UAE even faster. The baggage reclaim hall is rather small with low ceilings and can be a little busy if many flights arrive at the same time, but in general it is easy going.

Already at the luggage belts you can buy a prepaid sim card for the UAE, more about that later. After picking up your luggage you walk past the duty free into the arrival hall which is pretty small as well. On your left side there is a cafe and a convenience store and on your right side there are more sim card shops as well as the car rental desks.

Where to buy a sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport

where to buy a sim card at abu dhabi airport

As I just mentioned there are already sim card sellers at the luggage belt. You can find a desk of Etisalat as well as a desk of Virgin Mobile between luggage belt 3 and 4. The guys from Etisalat are pretty annoying hassling every passenger walking past to buy an Etisalat sim card. Even when they are already helping other costumers.

If you are intended to buy a Virgin Mobile prepaid sim card then this is your only chance, because if you walk through the customs baggage check and get to the arrival hall you can’t go back into the luggage claim area.

In the arrival hall there are two more mobile internet operator stores: Du and another Etisalat which also sell prepaid sim cards for the UAE for tourists.

Prices UAE prepaid sim cards at Abu Dhabi

Prepaid sim card prices and packages constantly change. Traveltomtom does everything in its power to keep information as up to date as possible. The below prices are updated in June 2024. Your input is appreciated if you have any updated info about buying a sim card in Abu Dhabi.

As of June 2024: 1 AED = $0.27 USD and $1 USD = 3.67 AED.

Virgin Mobile Luggage Belt 3-4

virgin mobile uae tourist sim card

Virgin Mobile has special UAE tourist sim cards:

  • 21* GB data + 30 minutes + 20 international minutes for 7 days = 150 AED - $40.8 USD
  • 40* GB data + 30 minutes + 20 international minutes for 7 days = 200 AED
  • 75* GB data + 30 minutes + 20 international minutes for 7 days = 300 AED

*See the above photo for more information.

Etisalat Luggage Belt 3-4

etisalat uae prepaid sim card

At Etisalat they say that you get a free UAE sim card if you buy a package, but that is with every operator the same, so don’t get too excited. Etisalat offfers the following prepaid sim cards deals valid for 28 days:

  • 2 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 49 AED - $13.3 USD
  • 4 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 79 AED
  • 8 GB data + 120 Flexi minutes = 125 AED
  • 22.5 GB data + 525 Flexi minutes = 200 AED

They also have a prepaid sim card deal with unlimited data in the UAE for 10 days:

  • Unlimited data + 100 Flexi minutes for 10 days = 319 AED

For more info see the picture above.

There is also an Etisalat store in the arrival hall where they sell the exact same prepaid sim cards for tourists as at the luggage belts.

DU Arrival Hall

A DU prepaid sim card is also free when buying one of the following data plans valid for 28 days:

  • 2 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 49 AED
  • 6 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 99 AED - $27 USD
  • 10 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 139 AED
  • 20 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 189 AED

DU also has a prepaid sim card deal with unlimited data in the UAE for 10 days:

  • Unlimited data for 10 days = 299 AED - $81 USD

Another reminder that if you want to buy a prepaid sim card in Abu Dhabi city center you will find the exact same packages and prepaid sim card deals at the official retail stores in the malls as at the airport.

Best UAE sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport

As you can see in the above comparison of the prepaid sim card deals in Abu Dhabi the cheapest sim card in Abu Dhabi cost 49 AED, which is $13 USD and you get 2 GB data. Both, Etisalat and DU offer this exact same UAE prepaid sim card deal.

This is a simple but great deal if you are just looking to stay connected on your trip to Abu Dhabi and occasionally use social media apps. But if you are a heavy data user Virgin Mobile turns out to be much cheaper as they give you much more GB’s for the same price.

To find the best prepaid sim card for Abu Dhabi I also compared the 4G/5G network coverage in UAE of Etisalat and DU and came to the conclusion that although Etisalat has the better 5G network, for tourists there is not much difference as every tourist spot in the UAE is covered with an excellent 5G signal on both networks.

Virgin Mobile is an MVNO and operates on the DU network. For more info about the best 4G/5G network in the UAE including coverage maps take a look at my article about the best sim card for Dubai in 2024 .

Airalo has figured out an idea that is bound to make communication for travellers easy as eating cake. Most smartphones now come with an eSim which is embedded in the device. Although this eSim exists, very few are aware of how to set it up and use it. This is where Airalo will help as they are the first eSIM store in the world that sells local and international SIMs that don't take long to set up.

Buy now airalo

How Airalo works?

Click here to view the eSIM packages on offer for Dubai. After you decide which plan to buy, make the payment through credit card, PayPal or in-app currency known as Airmoney. You will then be given a QR code. This code can then be scanned by any devices that have built-in eSIMs. This can be done by visiting Settings and then clicking on eSIM menu.

After the QR code has been scanned, the new eSIM profile will be downloaded into the device for that specific destination. Network connections will become active after you enter the country for which you purchased the eSIM. A single device can hold up to 50 different eSIMs making it possible to travel to different destinations and keep changing your email for instant coverage.

If you are buying an Airalo eSIM for Dubai, you need to select United Arab Emirates.

Pros of Using Airalo

The biggest pro of using Airalo is that it provides easy access to international eSIMs for an affordable price which doesn't take much long to set up. An US eSIM can be set up in a matter of 5 minutes.

Airport wifi & Getting a Sim in Dubai airport

You can access free Wi-fi at Dubai International airport (DXB) and Al Maktoum International airport (DWC) by following these steps

Best SIM Cards for the United Arab Emirates (Dubai & Abu Dhabi)

du abu dhabi tourist sim

If you’re travelling to the United Arab Emirates, you can save a lot of money by using the right SIM card. Compare the best SIM cards for using your phone in Dubai & Abu Dhabi.

du abu dhabi tourist sim

Having access to your mobile phone in the United Arab Emirates makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family whilst you’re there. It’s also helpful for finding your way around (e.g. with directions on Google Maps) and for calling a taxi, your hotel, or a local restaurant for a reservation.

Nowadays, it’s really easy to use your mobile phone in the United Arab Emirates. There are roaming packages available from just £1.67 per day when you use a UK SIM card. Alternative, you can buy a local SIM card on arrival from 49 AED (about £10.60), or there are data-only eSIMs available from ~£3.50 for 7 days usage .

In this article, we’ll review the best SIM cards for using your mobile phone in the United Arab Emirates (including Dubai and Abu Dhabi). We’ll compare the three different ways of using your mobile phone in the UAE (roaming on a UK SIM card, getting a local SIM card upon arrival, or buying an eSIM plan). We’ll also discuss the network compatibility with your UK phone.

Using Your Mobile Phone In The United Arab Emirates

du abu dhabi tourist sim

  • You can roam on a UK-based SIM card. This is the easiest way to use your mobile phone in the UAE. However, it can be an expensive option if you’re on the wrong mobile network. You’ll have a UK-based phone number (+44) and you’ll pay your UK mobile network for usage.
  • You can buy a local SIM card upon arrival in the UAE. This will give you a local phone number (+971). However, you’ll need to undergo SIM card registration. Censorship will also be in place on the SIM card. This can be an expensive option if you need more than 2GB data.
  • You can buy a data-only eSIM for the UAE. If you’re using an eSIM-compatible phone, you can get a data-only eSIM from Burj Mobile (via Airalo). This can save you some time and hassle compared to getting a SIM card on arrival. However, you won’t be able to call or text on it.

The following table shows a side-by-side comparison of these three options:

If you need the ability to call and text on your trip, consider getting a SIM card from Lebara Mobile or Sky.

On Lebara, there’s a £15 roaming add-on that gives you 200 minutes, 100 texts and 500MB data in the UAE. You’ll be able to call both UK and UAE numbers, making it perfect for staying in touch. The add-on is valid for 8 days and you can get it on any of Lebara’s Pay As You Go plans (which are available with no contract and no credit check).

If you’re a heavy data user, Sky Mobile is also worth considering as you’ll be able to use your UK plan allowances for an extra £2 per day. For instance, they currently offer a 15GB data plan for £7 per month in the UK.

If you’re only concerned about the ability to use data on your trip (without calls or texts), consider getting a Burj Mobile eSIM with 1GB data (valid for 7 days). You’ll just need to account for the cost of calls and texts on your regular SIM card (which can be upwards of £2/minute). It’s also possible to get a local SIM card on arrival from Etisalat or Du , but this will cost you more money and be more time-consuming to set up.

Roaming On Your UK SIM Card

du abu dhabi tourist sim

If you’re using a UK-based SIM card, you’ll be able to set everything up before you depart. The SIM card will allow you to call and text other UK-based phone numbers. This includes your friends & family who are back home in the UK, as well as other people who are travelling abroad together with you.

Best Roaming Deals For The United Arab Emirates

Lebara Mobile

du abu dhabi tourist sim

The biggest advantage of Lebara’s roaming add-ons is the fact you’ll get inclusive minutes, allowing you to call other UK phone numbers as well as locally in the UAE. You’ll also get some texts and data included, and there’s no contract and no credit check on their plans.

If you’re new to Lebara, you’ll need to order a SIM card from them before you’re able to get a roaming add-on. You can use the KEN3 promo code at checkout to get 3 months half price, allowing you to get a UK plan from just £2.50 per month for 3 months.

Get Lebara SIM card (from £2.50) →

du abu dhabi tourist sim

Sky’s Roaming Passport Plus allows you to call and text other UK-based phone numbers (starting with +44). This includes friends and family members who are travelling abroad with you. However, unlike on the roaming add-ons from Lebara, you’ll pay extra for calling UAE-based phone numbers (starting with +971). At the time of writing, these are charged at an extra £1.75/minute.

You can get the following SIM-only deal from £5 per month on Sky Mobile:

As a Sky Mobile customer, you’ll be able to roll over your unused data for up to three years . In addition, there’s the guarantee of no mid-contract price rises. You’ll also get unlimited data for streaming Sky TV when you’re inside the UK.

There’s a 12-month contract on the Sky Mobile SIM-only plans, but you have the flexibility to change your plan whenever you like (e.g. moving to a cheaper plan, or upgrading to another plan with more data).

Get Sky Mobile SIM Card (from £5) →

Standard Roaming Rates

On the other UK networks, you should expect to pay substantially more to use your phone in the UAE. The following table shows the standard roaming rates you can expect to pay:

Comparison of roaming charges when using your UK-based SIM card in the United Arab Emirates. The costs shown are for calling the UK and sending a text message to the UK. It’s always free to receive a text message wherever you are in the world. 1 If you’re an O2 Pay Monthly customer, the £6 per day O2 Travel bolt-on will give you unlimited minutes, texts and data in the United Arab Emirates. 2 If you’re a Three Pay Monthly customer, you can buy the £5 per day Data Passport add-on for unlimited data in the United Arab Emirates.

If you’re paying the standard rates for roaming in the UAE, the costs can add up very quickly. This is because the average UK smartphone user consumes more than 100MB of data per day. At a rate of 10p/MB, this would cost you an extra £10 per day.

Buying A UAE SIM Card On Arrival

du abu dhabi tourist sim

Prices start from 49 AED (approximately £11.80) for a basic tourist SIM card with 2GB data included. You’ll also get 30 ‘flexi minutes’ on your plan, which can be used for calling locally and internationally.

There are two main things worth being aware of before you get a local UAE SIM card:

  • You’ll need to register the SIM card with the government authorities. Before you’re able to use a local SIM card in the United Arab Emirates, you’ll need to register it with the government authorities. This involves registering the SIM card with a copy of your passport and visa. Your fingerprints will also be taken for biometric registration of the SIM card.
  • Censorship is in place on local UAE SIM cards. It isn’t possible to use voice-over-IP calling services such as Skype, FaceTime, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. You can, however, continue to send text messages through these apps. The United Arab Emirates also places a block on websites that are “inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political or moral values of the UAE”. This means, for instance, LGBTQ content is blocked on local UAE SIMs.

There are two mobile networks that you’re able to choose from in the UAE: Etisalat and Du . As both of them are partly state-owned, there’s limited competition and they offer very similar products at a similar price point. You can get a SIM card in the airport arrivals hall (including at Dubai Airport and Abu Dhabi Airport), though you should be prepared for a bit of a wait at times. You can also get a local SIM card in major shopping malls (including the Dubai Mall).

du abu dhabi tourist sim

The following table shows Etisalat’s prepaid tourist SIM cards:

As an Etisalat customer, you’ll benefit from discounted taxi rides whilst you’re in the UAE. To get this, you’ll need to download the Careem app (their local equivalent of Uber). There’s a 25% discount available on 2 Hala taxi rides (up to a maximum of 15AED per ride) and a 15% discount on 5 Careem taxi rides (up to a maximum of 20AED per ride).

You can find a Etisalat store to get your Visitor Line SIM card.

du abu dhabi tourist sim

You can get the following prepaid tourist SIM cards from Du in the UAE:

If you’re arriving at Dubai Airport, you can get a free SIM card at the airport immigration counter. This will include 1GB of data (valid for up to 24 hours). After the first 24 hours, you can recharge it with one of the plans listed above. It’s also possible to get a Du SIM card from other stores across the UAE .

You can also get a tourist SIM card from Virgin Mobile UAE (powered by Du). However, the tourist plans on Virgin Mobile are much more expensive and start from 142 AED (approx £31) for 7 days of usage. For this reason, we wouldn’t recommend getting a SIM card from Virgin Mobile in the United Arab Emirates.

eSIMs For The United Arab Emirates

du abu dhabi tourist sim

The biggest benefit of getting an eSIM is the fact it’s available straight away as an over-the-air download (there’s no waiting around to get a SIM card at the airport). It’s also cheaper than getting a local SIM card.

The biggest disadvantage is the fact you’re getting a data-only service. This means you’ll need to use your normal SIM card for calling and texting, with all of the usual roaming fees that will apply for that.

At present, you can choose from the following eSIM plans on Burj Mobile (Airalo):

See all UAE eSIM deals →

If you’re using a Burj Mobile eSIM from Airalo, you’ll get access to 4G coverage on the Etisalat network in the UAE. Once activated, the eSIM plan is valid for either a 7-day, 15-day or 30-day period. You’re only able to use the eSIM in the UAE – it will not work in any other country (e.g. if you’re transiting in another country).

As a special offer for June 2024, you can get a 10% discount on your Burj Mobile eSIM. If you’re new to Airalo, enter the KEN10 voucher code at checkout to get 10% off. Alternatively, if you’re an existing Airalo customer, there’s a 5% discount available with the KEN5 voucher code.

For more information, see our Airalo review .

Handset & Network Compatibility

If you’re using a SIM card or an eSIM from a different mobile network, you’ll just need to make sure your handset is unlocked .

The following table shows the bands and frequencies used in the United Arab Emirates:

Dubai: Have you just moved to the UAE on a new job or to live with your family? If you are a new resident, still trying to sort out all your paperwork, you may be wondering how you can apply for a SIM card. Here is all you need to know about the requirements you need to fulfil to apply for a SIM card and what your options are for getting a mobile phone line.

Can I get a postpaid or prepaid line right after I land in the UAE?

The requirements for getting a SIM card are set by the UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA). As per TDRA’s regulations, an applicant must provide an Emirates ID, along with other supporting documents, to apply for a SIM card.

However, if you have just landed in the UAE and your residency-related paperwork is still under process, you can apply for a tourist or visitor’s line, which is offered by all the main telecommunications operators in the UAE – Etisalat, du and Virgin Mobile. Once you have an Emirates ID, you can convert the line into a prepaid or postpaid number.

Etisalat – Visitor line

Etisalat offers customers a visitor line, which can be applied for by anyone new to the UAE, as it only requires you to present your passport.

However, the number is only active for 90 days. If you are a new resident in the UAE and still in the process of applying for your visa, you can get a visitor line and then convert it to a postpaid or prepaid number once you get your Emirates ID.

An eSIM is a SIM card that is embedded in a mobile device. An eSIM will come in the form of an integrated SIM chip that cannot be removed from a device. Traditional SIM cards are made of plastic and can be removed from the phone, whereas eSIM cannot be removed.

With an eSIM, you can accommodate multiple phone numbers, which you can add, delete and configure right from your phone's settings. There is no need to physically remove and replace a physical SIM. For example, you will now be able to switch between private and business numbers in one phone without physically swapping the SIM cards.

All new and existing customers are eligible for eSIM, including tourists.

  • Visit any du store or go to shop.du.ae with valid ID.
  • Subscribe to any mobile plans that include eSIM.
  • You will receive a QR code.
  • Contact your company’s authorised representative for the QR code.
  • Once you receive the QR code, access your device settings and choose ‘Add eSIM’.
  • The eSIM will be added to your device, and you can start using the mobile number.
  • Converting a physical SIM to an eSIM.
  • Transferring an eSIM from one phone to another.
  • Getting a replacement if the eSIM is deleted or the phone is reset or lost.
  • You're connected to Wi-Fi or mobile internet.
  • Your phone software is updated.
  • Your device has more than 50% charge.
  • Download the du App and log into the device where you want to activate the eSIM.
  • Choose the mobile number you aim to convert or transfer.
  • Tap the menu icon (3 dots) next to your phone number.
  • Opt for the ‘Manage SIM’ choice.
  • To change a physical SIM to eSIM, click ‘Convert to eSIM’. To transfer an eSIM to another gadget, select ‘Activate eSIM on this device’.
  • Verify your ID using the UAE PASS.
  • After verification, the eSIM request initiates.
  • During this, ensure consistent Wi-Fi and keep the du App open; eSIM activation might take a bit.
  • Once activated, your eSim is ready on your device.
  • Visit a du Store with a valid ID to receive an eSIM QR code.

Note: Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi (or mobile internet) and your phone software is updated.

  • While pairing, select ‘Cellular Setup’. Select ' Cellular ' if the watch is already paired and you need cellular service.

Alternatively, you can visit any du stores with your valid ID to activate Apple Watch eSIM.

  • Consult your company’s authorised signatory to activate apple watch eSIM.
  • Multi-SIM lets the Apple Watch share your mobile number, enabling calls and data use, even without the iPhone nearby.
  • This feature is exclusive to Postpaid plans.
  • Existing Multi-SIM subscriptions aren't compatible with Apple Watch eSIM activation.
  • Can I use any handset with an eSIM? The eSIM will only work with handsets that support it. You’ll need to check with your mobile handset brand website to see if it’s on the list of eSIM-capable handsets.
  • How many eSIM connections can I have on my phone? This is a phone memory feature. Currently, phones should be able to support between 3 to 10 profiles (eSIMs). Check the user guide of your phone to have the exact number.

We're running a promotion on the du App for the next 6 months. During this time, you can convert your physical SIM to an eSIM or transfer your eSIM from one phone to another (iOS only) at no cost. This means the usual AED 20 + 5% VAT fee will not be charged.

  • Delete the eSIM profile from the current device (phones, tablets and watches). (You should refer to the device user manual for this.)
  • Ensure all personal content, like images, videos, and messages, is removed.
  • Reset the phone to its factory settings.
  • What if I lose the QR code from my eSIM activation? If that happens, you'd need to visit the nearest du Store for an eSIM swap. The QR code received upon subscription can only be used once.
  • If you lost a QR code that was already added to your device, nobody else can use it on a different device.
  • If the QR code was lost before adding it to your device, you should request a new one at a du Store or call customer service to block the SIM if you can't make it to the store immediately. This can be misused. For example, the QR code before adding to your device is equivalent to losing your physical SIM card.
  • Can I use an eSIM if I switched from Etisalat? Absolutely! If you ported your number from Etisalat, you can definitely get an eSIM.
  • Will my Roaming work with an eSIM? Yes. All services, including National and International Roaming, should work seamlessly when using an eSIM. Except for the Apple Watch, as it doesn’t support Roaming.
  • What should I do if the Wi-Fi drops during the eSIM activation? If the eSIM activation fails due to weak Wi-Fi, simply try again. Just make sure your connection is stable before proceeding again.
  • What if I want to convert my eSIM to a physical SIM? Visit any du Store with a valid ID to convert your SIM. If you have a corporate mobile number, consult your company’s authorised signatory to convert your SIM.
  • Does resetting the phone to factory removes eSIM? Yes, in such case you can visit du app to get your eSIM redownloaded using UAE PASS authentication. If you don’t have the UAE PASS then visit any du Store with a valid ID to replace your deleted eSIM where you will get a QR code. If you have a corporate mobile number, consult your company’s authorised signatory to get a QR code.
