Glenkinchie Distillery

Share "glenkinchie distillery", description.

Popularly referred to as the ‘Home of Edinburgh Malt,’ the Glenkinchie Distillery is situated in East Lothian and was brought to life in 1837.

The Glenkinchie Distillery is surrounded by much history owing to the history surrounding its location and the exploits of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745 after he became one of the most powerful leaders of his time.

Illegal distilleries flooded this place at a time until smaller distilleries were forced to get their license.  As at when Glenkinchie was launched, there were more than 170 distilleries run with a licence in the Scottish lowlands although their products then would be rejected by whisky lovers today.

Getting there

The Prestonpans railway station halts at Tranent and you can alight and follow B6355 straight to Pencaitland.

Glenkinchie distillery.

Glenkinchie is the nearest malt whisky distillery to Edinburgh, and the producer of the so called “Edinburgh Malt”.

Glenkinchie distillery is located to the south of the pretty village of Pencaitland, which is south-east of Edinburgh. Because of its closeness to Scotland’s capital city, the distillery is a popular stopping point for tourists, and it is well signposted on the A6093.

Glenkinchie distillery also houses a  museum about Malt Whisky production, and you can visit this while waiting for your tour to begin. In the museum, there is an example of an illicit still, a large-scale model of a distillery, a variety of displays, and a video introducing the other malts in the Classic Malt collection.

The distillery tour spends about 20 minutes in the museum before taking you on a 40-minute tour of the production areas. Most of the production areas are accessible by wheelchair, but the Mash Tuns can only be reached by a staircase.

A noteworthy feature of Glenkinchie is the fact that it has the largest stills in Scotland, with a volume of 30,963 litres.

After your tour you get a glass of the Glenkinchie 12yr old and you may try a sample from one of a variety of other whiskies to compare the difference in flavours. The tasting room is quite modern and stylish in its design and looks like a fashionable bar. Not the sort of traditional look and feel that you might expect in a Scottish distillery.

You may enjoy shopping for a whisky here, as the shop is stocked with some very rare and interesting varieties that you seldom find in places other than specialist whisky shops. If you take the tour you get a £5 discount on any whisky bottle purchases.

The distillery tours can be booked on the Glenkinchie Distillery website .

Glenkinchie Distillery

Pronounced : glen-KIN-chee

Meaning : Valley of the Kinchie burn

Our interesting fact ; Glenkinchie has the largest pot still in Scotland with a capacity of 21,000 litres.

Eco & Sustainability

Glenkinchie, was recently named as ‘ The Garden Distillery’, due to its beautiful new garden development; fruits of a vision of planting to echo the land and greenery surrounding the distillery in the midst of East Lothian. Inspired by the local wild flowers and grasses the distillery gardens now include the installation of beehives, bat houses, bug boxes, and plantings to attract, feed, and shelter insect pollinators, birds and other creatures.

The distillery encourages you to arrive by bus or bicycle and are a litter collection free site.

Glenkinchie Distillery

Keeping Edinburgh and its surrounds in good spirits for nearly 200 years, this Victorian whisky distillery set amid farmland offers a range of tours with samplings of its aromatic, light single malt. A charming model distillery forms the centrepiece of its mini-museum, packed with historic whisky paraphernalia.

Glenkinchie is 15 miles southeast of Edinburgh, via the A1/A68; without a car, your best bet is the distillery's shuttle bus (single/return £10/12), which runs return trips twice daily – book in advance.

Touring Glenkinchie Distillery in Edinburgh

Glenkinchie Distillery is the closest distillery to Edinburgh. Glenkinchie Distillery is the closest distillery to Edinburgh.

Scotland has more than 120 active whisky distilleries. But many travelers will be disappointed to learn that most distilleries aren’t easily accessible from Edinburgh — at least not without some serious time and dedication. While most distilleries are hours-long train or car rides from Edinburgh, Glenkinchie Distillery is close enough to visit in half a day.

I fell in love with Glenkinchie scotch on my first trip to Scotland when I asked a bartender for the most local whisky in Edinburgh. Sweet and floral, with a subtle licorice finish, I’ve been ordering Glenkinchie ever since. So when I returned to Scotland a month later , it was an easy decision to tour Glenkinchie Distillery.

The entrance to Glenkinchie Distillery.

Getting to Glenkinchie Distillery from Edinburgh

Glenkinchie Distillery is just 15 miles outside of Edinburgh and accessible by bus, taxi, or shuttle. The distillery runs a shuttle for 10£ directly from Old Town, which is much cheaper than the 35 minute taxi (that costs about 40£ each way).

The drive, like most I’ve experienced throughout the UK , is beautiful. The distillery calls the tiny village of Pencaitland home, along with less than 2,000 residents. (How cute is that?!) While Glenkinchie opened in 1825, the village has been around since 1169! The surrounding area was built specifically so the workers could easily stumble home after a long day on the job — and a lot of post-work whisky. (Today, they aren’t as lucky!)

The beautiful green land surrounding Glenkinchie Distillery in Scotland.

Touring Glenkinchie Distillery

Glenkinchie offers several types of tours, ranging from “a quick teaser” of a mini distillery model for 5£ to a 2-hour tasting tour for 150£ and several options in between. We did the Flavour of Scotland Tour (14£), a guided tour through the distillery with four tastes of scotch.

The guided tour goes through the entire process of creating scotch. You can see and smell every step of the way, even the fermentation tanks and pot stills. Having only toured American whiskey distilleries before my visit, I was surprised at the differences in production.

The biggest surprise was how short the stacks of barrels aging in the warehouse were. I’ve seen warehouses of American whiskey towering five and six barrels high, and the guides always emphasize the importance of where the barrels are located. But according to the Glenkinchie guide, height doesn’t make a difference in Scotland because the temperature doesn’t fluctuate like it does in the US. It maintains a relatively stable temperature so all the barrels age at about the same rate.

Barrels of Glenkinchie Distillery in Scotland.

Sipping Glenkinchie Single Malt Scotch

After seeing how grain is turned into whisky, we tasted the final product. Glenkinchie is one of only four Lowland distilleries currently producing whisky, along with Ailsa Bay, Auchentoshan, and Bladnoch. Most Lowland whisky is combined with Highland whisky into blends like Dewar’s and Johnny Walker, so you might have tasted Glenkinchie even if you haven’t heard of it.

Glenkinchie Distillery only sells two bottles alone: Glenkinchie 12 and the Distillers Edition . I prefer Glenkinchie 12, with its typical Lowland flavor profile: creamy, nutty with hints of grassy and honeysuckle.

The tour guide joked that they call Glenkinchie 12 a “breakfast whisky” because it’s so light. While I agree, I think I’ll stick to the distillery’s suggestion to enjoy it as an pre-dinner aperitif! :)

Details of Touring Glenkinchie Distillery

Glenkinchie Distillery is open 7 days a week (with some holiday exceptions) with times varying depending on the season. Tours can be pre-booked online or by phone, but we called a few hours before going to make sure there was availability and showed up without an appointment.

The tour was informative and fun, plus it ended with whisky! The whole tour (including transportation) only took a few hours done by ourselves. Or, if you prefer to join a pre-arranged tour, this tour combines Glenkinchie Distillery with Rosslyn Chapel for a complete day trip.

by The Foodie Travel Guide | Apr 12, 2015

Glenkinchie Distillery, near Edinburgh, Scotland

Glenkinchie is often known as the Edinburgh Malt, due to it’s close proximity to Scotland’s capital. It is one of the last three distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands.

Glenkinchie is often known as the Edinburgh Malt, due to it’s close proximity to Scotland’s capital.  The core expression of the official bottling range is the 12 year old, although the official bottlings also include a 17 year old, 20 year old, 21 year old, as well as a series of Distiller’s Edition and series of Special Releases. There had been very few independent bottlings which are long gone from the shelves.

The Production

The distillery has a production capacity of 1.7 million litres a year.  Burns in the neighbouring Lammermuir Hills provide the water that is used in the distillation process. A fairly unique aspect of the production at Glenkinchie is that the distillery has a cast-iron worm tub that is still used to condense the freshly distilled spirit.  In contrast to regular worm tubs, which have a round shape, the one at Glenkinchie is two storeys high, with a rectangular spiral shape.

Crude oil tanks outside the distillery.

The Pot Stills

Glenkinchie has always operated with only one wash still and one spirit still, each with an enormous capacity. The wash still holds 21’000 liters, and the spirit still holds 17’200 liters. The wash still is actually the largest in Scotland. Both the wash and spirit stills have constricting pieces in their neck, just above the lid of the pot. This constricting piece separates the vapors from heavily boiling and moving surface of the liquid. This helps to calm the vapor column in the neck of the still. The stills at Glenkinchie have a fairly unique shape, as the intermediate section is almost concave, and then opens up into a short but gradually narrowing neck.

The Maltings

The area of Scotland in which Glenkinchie is located, the Lothian’s, is famed for it’s high quality of barley. The distillery used it’s own floor maltings until 1969, since when the malt has been sourced from an industrial maltings. The building that used to house the floor maltings has now been converted into a museum of Glenkinchie’s history and Malt Whisky production. The maltings used are very gently peated, although Glenkinchie does not have a too smoky taste.

The Warehouse

A cask template of the Glenkinchie Distillery. Glenkinchie has three dunnage warehouses onsite, which host over 10’000 casks. The distillery uses a variety of different casks to mature its spirit. The 14-year-old Distiller’s Edition is aged in Amontillado Sherry casks, while many of the other Single Malts are aged in Bourbon casks.

The History

Two brothers, John and George Rate in 1837, founded Glenkinchie although Diageo claim that there is a link between Glenkinchie and a previous distillery called Milton that was located on the same site. In 1840, James Gray, of Leechman & Gray took over operations, only for John Rate to assume control again in 1852. One year later, Rate closed the distillery due to a lack of profits, and the site was sold to a local famer named Christie, who turned it into a sawmill.

Following this sale, Glenkinchie remained inactive for a few decades, until in 1880, when the site was bought by a consortium of distillers and wine merchants, who named themselves the Glen Kinchie Distillery Company. The distillery was reconstructed, and production resumed again successfully. In 1914, Glenkinchie formed the Scottish Malt Distillers group with four other Lowland distilleries. A little more than a decade later, in 1925, SMD was bought by Distiller’s Company Limited. Remarkably, Glenkinchie managed to continue to operate through both the World Wars. As the twentieth century drew to a close, Glenkinchie continued to undergo a series of developments. The floor maltings were closed in 1969, and converted into a museum, and two new bottlings, a 12 year old and 20 year old cask strength, were released in 2007.

Get to Know Glenkinchie

  • by Margarett Waterbury

Have you ever wanted to travel to Scotland with a likeminded group of whisky lovers? Now’s your chance! This summer, September 2-9, w e’re co-sponsoring our first-ever whisky-themed trip with Customized Journeys, a boutique travel agency specializing in memorable vacations. Interested in coming along? Check out the trip page here .

Of the many distilleries we’ll visit on our upcoming trip to Scotland, Glenkinchie is the only Lowland member of the bunch. Located in East Lothian, a district of bucolic rural landscapes and gently rolling fields, it’s a quick trip from the brooding city of Edinburgh, yet a world apart.

Glenkinchie Distillery is owned by Diageo. Its malt goes into blends like Haig’s and Dewars, and its flagship 12-year-old single malt (sometimes referred to as the “Edinburgh Malt” for its proximity to the city) is part of Diageo’s Classic Malts of Scotland collection.

The Glenkinchie Distillery in its current form was founded in 1880, although Diageo traces its lineage back to 1825, the year the Milton Distillery commenced production on the same site. East Lothian is known for producing high quality barley, and has long been associated with the brewing and distilling industries. Several distilleries existed in East Lothian during the 1800s, and world-famous Belhaven Brewery is still just a half-hour away.

Yet most distilleries in East Lothian eventually closed, leaving only the tenacious Glenkinchie. It’s one of the few Scottish distilleries that remained in production during World War II, and it’s is one of just a handful of remaining distilleries in the Lowlands, an area that was once a very historically significant source of whisky. Today, the Lowlands are showing signs of growth once again, although it still trails every major Scotch region but one, Campbelltown, for the number of active distilleries.

glenkinchie visit

The Lowlands are often associated with triple distillation and gigantic continuous column stills, but that’s not what we’ll find at Glenkinchie. Just like many of the more famous Highland distilleries, it double-distills its malt on pot stills—colossal ones, including one of the largest wash stills in all of Scotland, holding 30,000 liters.

Contrary to the notion that all Lowland malts are feather-light, Glenkinchie also uses a cast-iron worm tub rather than a more modern condenser, preserving more of the distillate’s character through gentler reflux.

The distillery’s style leans towards the grassy and floral, with a slightly spicy edge. Here’s how Michael Jackson described it : “One of the best-known Lowlanders. The typical regional character is there in its soft grassiness. Perhaps more like lemon grass? Then spicier, with cinnamon and ginger, in a lively finish.”

Everything has a beginning and my deeper whiskey interest started at this distillery. This is the first distillery I have visited which is a real whiskey distillery. I have visited breweries and been on holidays where we have seen how home-brewed alcohol has been made, so it was a bit of an experience to visit Glenkinchie.

My wife and I were on holiday in Edinburgh. It was the year when Queen Elisabeth turned 90, so it was a party to visit Edinburgh Castle one of the days with 21 cannon shots and bagpipe music.

glenkinchie visit

We had seen that it was possible to book an excursion to Glenkinchie distillery. Not bad, so it had to be tried.

We were excited, well maybe mostly me, and we did not know what to expect. The bus ride went quickly along small roads from Edinburgh to the Distillery just over 25 kilometers southwest of Edinburgh.

We had booked a tour of the distillery and a tasting of 3 different whiskeys. We started by walking around the small museum looking at small pot stills and old bottles. It was interesting, but I had a hard time waiting to get around and see where the real magic happened. We were finally picked up and the tour began with a nice story about the history of the distillery, which starts in 1826 where it went by the name Milton, but the actual distillery started in 1837. We also got the story that it was closed for a period and was transformed into a sawmill. Later, when blended whisky became very popular (ca. 1880), it was restored as a thoroughbred Lowland Distillery in 1890. They also have a model of a distillery. It is actually a model that can produce whiskey! The model is on a scale of 1:6 and was built for the British Empire Exhibition in 1926.

Finally we came in where we could see how the barley was processed and where “beer” was brewed. We were given the opportunity to smell barley and were told where it came from, the different stages of germination and until it was ground into grist. Some were dried with heat from gas burners and others with heat and smoke. It was the first time I smelled smoked malt and it is a bit of an experience in itself.

We saw where the big Mash Tun tanks were and here we were again told we were not allowed to take pictures – arghhh. The explanation was that it was due to the danger of explosion. If just the smallest electric sparks occurred, there was a risk that the fumes in the room could ignite. Hmmm, at the same time as we were there, a movie crew came with lights on the cameras and other heavy equipment. It was some very special cameras that did not create heat and sparks ….. Yes, okay then…. Let’s say so…

We entered the fermentation room and looked enchanted at the process that was going on and what a scent. The next place was one of the iconic places in the distillery, and one of the places I really wanted the opportunity to take pictures – but, no. once again we were not allowed to take pictures. The room we were standing in was where the Stills were. The Largest Pot Stills in the UK – Wow! One, Low wines still, with a capacity of 20998 liters and the other, Washstill at an astonishing 30963 liters. An impressive sight.

Now we were going outside where we were locked into one of the warehouses, with explanations of strict customs rules, so we stood and watched from a distance on the barrels of whisky that matured, through a chicken wire fence. A cozy old dusty building where it could have been fun to be able to pat one of the casks- but not this time…. Incidentally, it is only a very small part of the whisky produced at Glenkinchie that actually lies and matures at the distillery. What remains at the distillery is primarily what is to be used for single malts. A large part is used for blended whisky. A good bit is used for Johnnie Walker.

Now it was time to taste the goods. The walk went past the large red brick buildings. It is not so common to use red bricks to build distilleries with, so Glenkinchie is also special in that area. Somewhere between 1.5-2 million liters of whisky are produced at the Glenkinchie distillery per year, so they do not take full advantage of the capacity. However, it is still a nice amount of whisky.

Primarily 2 single malts are produced at Glenkinchie distillery which are The Glenkinchie 12 years and a Distillers Edition. You will hear more about them in another post.

We were briefly introduced to how to taste whisky to get the most out of it. Glenkinchie 12 years old was the first one we tasted. A good light and fruity experience. After that, there was “free play” on other whiskies. There was no opportunity to taste the Distillers Edition, unfortunately, but since Glenkinchie is one of the cornerstones of Diageo’s Classic Malts, there was a wide selection from other of Diageo’s distilleries represented.

This tasting gave me the opportunity to taste: 🥃 Glenkinchie 12 years 🥃 Clynelish 14 years 🥃 Blair Athhol 12 years 🥃 Glen Elgin 12 years 🥃 Lagavulin Distillers Edition 16 years 🥃 Talisker Distillers Edition

The visit to Glenkinchie distillery was a really good experience and has definitely helped to give my Whiskey Adventures an insight and a desire for more experiences and visits at other distilleries.

Now that this post is being loaded I can add that the Glenkinchie distillery needs a revisit because in 2020 they opened the doors to a thoroughly renovated visitor center. So I would think it can give a new good experience in the future.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
