The trek starts from Bari village. Walk through the village on the path that leads straight through it, without taking any of the turns that you come across.

Once you leave the village behind, the trek begins with a walk through some fields. Take a right after you reach the end of the hutments. In monsoon, there will likely be a stream flowing here. You will need to cross this and continue walking through the fields.

Walk through the farmlands where a variety of rice like Indraini, Kolum, and Tukda are grown. Wheat and green vegetables like Tandul are also cultivated. The trail passes through one or two villager houses and dhabbas. There are some steep ascents in this section.

The path naturally turns upwards to the left after the fields. The trail now becomes a little rocky. It is well shaded by trees. The first small ascent leads you to the temple of a local deity. This is an ideal place for some quick rest.

The rock surface is steep. To tackle these, the steps are at spots where climbing the rock surface is difficult.

Best time To Do The Kalsubai Peak Trek

The trek is open throughout the year with each season having a different landscape. So choose the best time depending on what you would like to experience.

July to September is the monsoon season. You get to see lush green landscapes and experience trekking in heavy rain. Although the monsoon season is the peak season it gets extremely crowded with about 2000- 3000 people on the trail.  It gets very slippery and risky due to the slushy trail. It is very difficult to get clear views too so it's best to avoid this season.

September and October are the flowering seasons. These autumn months give clear views of the surrounding peaks and forts. You get to experience walking on grasslands with a vast variety of flowers. The same variety of flowers found in the Kaas plateau is also found here. Snake lovers get to see some rare species on the iron ladders.

Night hikes are best from November to April when the weather is perfect to witness the spectacular sunrise from the summit. It can get a bit chilly so carry a light jacket.

May and June are the pre-monsoon months. The clouds form interesting patterns, also look out for the fireflies!

➤ How to Get Fit for the Trek

The Kalsubai Peak trek is classified as a Moderate grade trek . From Bari Village at 2400 feet, you will gain approximately 3000 feet in altitude.

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for a Moderate grade trek in 4 weeks.

Cardiovascular endurance.

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace every day in the following manner –

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging into your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 37 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 20 km in one hour.

Strength Training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and its variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also, try these exercises for strength-

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles regularly promote relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here’s a video you can use to work out indoors.

Ladder Section on Kalsubai Trek

The Kalsubai Trek has two routes; however, in this guide, we will cover the most common one, the ladder route from Bari. The trek is a  6 km (approx) long trek  that takes approximately  3-4 hours  to reach the summit. The hike is divided into three sections: the initial climb, the plateau walk, and the final ascent.

Kalsubai Trek: A Thrilling Journey to Maharashtra’s Highest Peak

Table of Contents

Introduction

Picture this: you’re hanging in the air, between the earth and the sky, supported by nothing but a ladder. It’s a moment that defines adventure, one that tests your boundaries, celebrates your bravery and etches itself into your very being. My Kalsubai trek was all about these moments, and I can’t wait to take you along on this extraordinary journey.

Kalsubai Trek

Historical Perspective

To fully appreciate the grandeur of Kalsubai, you must first understand the heights it reaches. Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra, India, and it reaches an elevation of 1,646 meters (5,400 feet) above sea level. This Kalsubai peak height isn’t just a number; it’s the heart and soul of this mountain, showcasing the rugged beauty of the Western Ghats.

But Kalsubai’s significance goes beyond its impressive height. People have been coming here for ages to pay their respects to the local goddess. The name “Kalsubai” itself derived from a village woman named Kalsu who took up the challenging task of scaling the mountain. She couldn’t complete the task, but her efforts earned her the name of the mountain. Some cool stories and legends make this place even more special. It’s not just a trek; it’s a cultural journey.

How to reach Kalsubai Trek

Now, before we delve into the heart of this journey, let’s talk about how you can actually get to Kalsubai. If you’re in Mumbai or Pune, you’re in for a treat because Kalsubai isn’t too far away. You can opt for a scenic bus ride or choose to drive, both promising a delightful journey.

The drive is an adventure in itself, taking you through the serene rural landscapes of Maharashtra. As you leave the bustling city behind and head toward the mountains, you’ll witness the landscape transform, preparing you for the adventure that awaits.

The trek kicks off from Bari, the base village of Kalsubai. Reaching Bari is relatively straightforward. If you’re relying on public transport, catch a bus to Igatpuri, a town located close to Bari. From Igatpuri, you can easily hire a local vehicle to reach Bari, the starting point of your trek.

If you have the luxury of your wheels, driving to Bari offers flexibility, allowing you to set your pace and make impromptu stops to admire the scenic beauty of the region. The journey covers approximately 165 kilometers from Mumbai to Bari and typically takes around three to four hours, depending on factors like traffic and road conditions.

However, it’s best to avoid Kalsubai peak during the monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September. The heavy rainfall during these months can transform the trails into slippery, muddy paths, making navigation challenging and potentially risky. While the monsoon does bring about greenery and the sight of waterfalls, it’s not the safest time to undertake the trek. Safety first, as they say!

As you ascend, you’ll notice the change in the vegetation around you. The dense forests and the abundance of wildflowers create a magical atmosphere. The monsoon season, with its frequent showers, transforms this region into a paradise for nature lovers.

And then, you encounter the “Heavenly Ladder.” This is the most exciting and challenging part of the trek. The ladder is a steep climb, and as you make your way up, you’ll be surrounded by the breathtaking view of the valley below. The feeling of accomplishment once you conquer this section is truly extraordinary. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a mesmerizing 360-degree view of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain ranges. The Kalsubai trek begins at the Bari village and goes through forest area and the uneven plateau with appealing natural beauty to keep you engaged and motivated. Not just trekking during the day time, the Kalsubai night trek is an equally enthralling experience.

In addition to being the highest point in Maharashtra, the Kalsubai trek is a famous getaway for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. It is so because the Kalsubai peak is nestled in the famous ‘Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary’, another reason to explore and bedazzled by its beauty. The geographical features of the place make it super exciting for visitors to climb and relish in the beauty of the place.

Kalsubai trek The Kalsubai trekking because of its moderate difficulty and accessibility has become more of a favourite destination of scores of people who converge to the place for fun, excitement, and adventurism. There are several trekking routes as well as animal tracks for the hikers, and depending upon the opinion, one may select one. The most famous route is through the village of Bari, which is approximately 7 km from the Bhandardara.

To start your trekking uphill, one must reach Igatpuri on Mumbai Nashik road. The Bari village is where the trekking journey starts and passes through thick vegetation, small streams, rocky terrain, paddy fields, high lands and steep slopes at times. The entire trekking route can be covered in 4 to 5 hours depending upon the speed and the other activities one intends to indulge in. For trekkers, there are shades available at regular intervals for one to take a rest and relax before embarking on the next leg of the journey.

The start The trekking starts with a beautiful view of the countryside where the Waki river (a tributary of Pravara) flows like a stream on the eastern fringe of the Bari village. Near the stream, a small but important landmark is the Hanuman temple that is a resting place for trekkers returning from their arduous but exciting journey back home. The trekking route from the temple goes straight to the peak with minimal chance of getting lost as it is very well marked. There are 22 noteworthy temples in Nashik one should visit in 2022.

Must Read: Dindigad Shiva Mandir Bhiwandi – The Manchester of India

The trekking route is a fusion of simple to moderate slopes in addition to treacherous rocky outcrops that are overlooking the valley beneath. Initially, the trail is smooth but gets a bit challenging with the height. To make the entire stretch scalable, authorities have put up chains, steel railings, and ladders at different places that are difficult to climb for average climbers. The idea is to make the entire stretch of the trek easy navigable to visitors. The descent is through the same route.

During this time, a trekker is immune from the scorching heat that dehydrates and tires an individual quickly. Also, during the monsoon season, trekking can be avoided or undertaken with caution, as the route is slippery and chances of an accident are more.

Kalsubai Trek | A Detailed Budget Guide from Mumbai

Kalsubai Trek to the highest peak of Maharashtra, at the height of 5,400, ft was on my list ever since I shifted to Mumbai. Kalsubai Trek can easily be reached by train journey without any difficulty. You don’t even need a guide on a weekend. There is only one route to the Kalsubai Peak from the base village Bari. You just need to follow the number of people heading to the same trail. However, this blog would explain the route in detail.

First, let me answer the frequently asked questions related to this trek :

Table of Contents

Kalsubai Trek’s Difficulty Level

Difficulty level: Moderate

Don’t be misguided by the height of Kalsubai peak, trekking to this peak isn’t that tiring or doesn’t require any special technical help. Most people do it on their own despite reaching there with a group. Moreover, the trail is now so much frequented that there is hardly any chance for anyone to get lost.

Best Time to do Kalsubai Trek

Winter is the best time if you want to play safe and if just climbing is your aim. If you wish to enjoy the lush green surrounding and drenched into the water pools created by the falls, monsoon is for you. I personally would advise anyone for a monsoon trek to Kalsubai.

Kalsubai’s Base Village Bari

Kalsubai trek in Monsoon

It is a small village and is quite clean and beautiful with many paddy fields around it. The water facility is good but you would hardly get drinking water on the trek route. It is advisable to reach the village as early as possible (around 5 am) to witness a beautiful morning and to avoid a lot of crowds. You will have to park your vehicle on the main road and walk through the entrance to the village.

Kalsubai Trek blog

At the starting of the village, there is a small house converted into an eatery/resting point which provides breakfast and meals to the trekkers.

 Trekking Route for Kalsubai

Kalsubai Trek From Mumbai

The trekking trail turns the most beautiful during monsoons.

There is a medium hike till you reach the first stop where there is a small temple under a tree; taking a left turn from there will lead you to a pathway passing through paddy fields. You can stop to have nimbu paani or tea at the stall here or else you can move up.

Kalsubai Trek from Mumbai by Train

The route turns steeper before you reach a plateau. You would be climbing the first ladder now. Don’t forget to glance back and see the floating clouds below you.

After an hour of hike, you will start climbing the steep ladders which will finally take you to the base of Kalsubai Temple; that is, the chef’s Dhaba (A small hut) who will serve the most delicious onion pakora and chai ever. Do not miss out this mouthwatering delicacy in the cold rainy weather. Trust me, you will forget all the pakoras you have ever had anywhere.

Kalsubai Trek difficulty level

The last steep ladder takes you to the temple of the Devi from where you would see the clouds raining below you. All your efforts to climb up will seem worthy. Carry enough winter wears as it would be too cold at 5,400 ft.

Kalsubai Trek Blog

Be aware of the monkeys while climbing.

This Might Also Help You –  Rajmachi: Trekking through the clouds

In case you are hiking on your own, there are no chances of getting lost as the route is well marked and as there are many tapries on the way, the owners would definitely guide you. Or else you just need to keep following other hundreds of trekkers moving to the same destination. (Only during seasons – Monsoons/Winter)

And please do not litter this heavenly place and try adding to its beauty by collecting the wrappers thrown by illiterate people.

The same route should be followed while getting down till you cross the mini-waterfall at the starting of the village.

Waterfalls at Bari

Kalsubai trek base village

If you have started climbing as early as 6 in the morning then you would definitely have some time to spend at the clean and not so crowded waterfalls located at the right turn before entering the village. The first waterfall is at five minutes distance, but if you wish to enjoy in a better waterfall you will have to keep walking for a few more minutes and you would see a comparatively bigger and clear waterfall. It isn’t dangerous as the water level is not too high.

How to reach Mumbai from Kalsubai

The local buses pass from the highway outside the village. The buses will drop you till Kasara. After that, you will have to catch a local train towards Mumbai.
