Cruises from/to Longyearbyen, Svalbard (Norway)
Longyearbyen, svalbard (norway) cruise port.
Longyearbyen is named after an American, John Munro Longyear, who set up the Arctic Coal Company and the coal mines in the area. This is a city on the islands of Svalbard, which are north of the mainland of Norway. Longyearbyen, one of the most treasured Northern European cruise ports, has the largest population of the other towns in Svalbard. Up here the culture has some interesting quirks. For instance, most restaurants, museums and homes require guests to take their shoes off before entering. And citizens who venture outside of the settlements are required to carry and know how to operate a rifle, in case they come across a polar bear. Fortunately for us, cruisers don’t have to worry about rifles and polar bears when cruising to Longyearbyen. Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Longyearbyen in Norway:
- Take a dog sled adventure in the summer. Don’t worry, even in the middle of summer the average temperature is around 40 degrees.
- Examine an abandoned mine on a tour given by a former miner.
- Learn about the polar explorations by visiting the Spitsbergen Airship Museum, which has artifacts from Norwegian, Italian and American explorers.
- Have a sip of wine at Huset, the world’s northernmost gourmet restaurant. They boast a wine cellar with more than 20,000 bottles.

Longyearbyen, Norway
One of the world’s unique destinations, the Svalbard archipelago lies over 640 kilometers (400 miles) north of the Norwegian mainland, deep inside the Arctic Circle. Amid the vast wilderness of mountains and glaciers is Longyearbyen, a tiny, thriving community of miners, researchers, students and their families who endure the harsh conditions to make this small town the northernmost permanently inhabited place on earth. The archipelago’s economy, along with its unique governance—Svalbard is administered by Norway, but citizens of many other countries can move here—means there is a much stronger international influence here than you might expect. Svalbard Church welcomes all nationalities and all faiths, and while the main language and currency is Norwegian, you’ll find an incredibly diverse range of backgrounds among the 3,000 human residents. The archipelago is also home to a few thousand polar bears. Although rarely seen close to Longyearbyen in the summer months, polar bears roam the islands all year round, so tourists are not allowed to leave Longyearbyen without a guide. But don't let this put you off exploring the town. To fully appreciate this remarkable location, a stroll around to chat with the locals and visit the museums is a must.

How to Get From Longyearbyen Cruise Port to Longyearbyen City Center
Svalbard with it’s unofficial capital city Longyearbyen is one of Norway’s most exotic and unique places, and a popular destination for large tourist cruise ships.
Many cruise ships spend a full day or even multiple days in the Port of Longyearbyen, so what’s the best method to get between Longyearbyen harbor and the city center?
Port of Longyearbyen is roughly 2 minute by car or a 10 to 15 minute walk away from Longyearbyen city center. You can get to Longyearbyen by the Airport Express bus that stops at the harbor, ride a taxi, or just do the walk on foot. The entire walk to the city is within the polar bear safe zone.
Longyearbyen is a rather small city, and it’s perfectly possible to get from Longyearbyen Cruise Port to the city center without needing public transportation.
All hotels in Longyearbyen are within walking distance from the harbor if you got a backpack (and not a suitcase), but you can always get on the bus to make life easier.
Table of Contents
Ride the bus between Port of Longyearbyen and Longyearbyen City center
The Airport Express Bus that goes between Longyearbyen and Longyear Airport will stop at Port of Longyearbyen as the next-to-final stop before the airport. You can get on the bus both ways and just get off at the harbor instead of the airport.
The Airport Express Bus will stop at all hotels in Longyearbyen, so it’s a nice and comfortable way to get from the cruise ship harbor to your hotel. It only costs 100 NOK per person, so it’s actually pretty cheap as well.
Some cruise ships offer bus rides for their passengers, so check in with your cruise ship to see if they have a deal like this.
Walking from Port of Longyear to the city center
The walk from Port of Longyear to the Longyearbyen city center is rather short, and you will reach the city in about 10 minutes at a regular pace. Add another 10, and you’ve reached the far end of the city.
Jokes asides, the hike is flat and easy, so it’s a relaxing stroll if you’ve only got a backpack or no luggage with you. Just head in the direction of the city (which you can clearly see from the port) to get there.
There is only one road, with signs towards Longyearbyen (the correct choice), or Svalbard Airport Longyear (the wrong way).
It’s illegal to hike or walk on Svalbard without being armed to protect yourself against polar bears, but the entire walk between the port of Longyearbyen and the city center is within what’s known as the polar bear safe zone. This is the city perimeter where you can walk without fear of being attacked by polar bears, so it’s safe to walk between these two locations.
Riding a taxi or driving a car between the cruise ship port and Longyearbyen
There are a few taxis on Svalbard, but not that many. It is possible to book a taxi to take you the 2 to 4 minute car drive between the harbor and your hotel, which is a nice option for those who for one reason or another don’t want to ride the bus.
Expect to pay around 200 NOK for this short ride between the harbor and your hotel or the city center. It’s quite expensive, and the reason is that the taximeter begins at over 150 NOK, so even short taxi rides are pretty expensive in Norway and on Svalbard.
There will occasionally be taxis waiting by the harbor, but not always, so it might be a good idea to book ahead of time to make sure you get one to take you to the city center. Give Svalbard Taxi ring at +47 7902 1305 or visit their website for more information .

Port Spitsbergen Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Spitsbergen is the largest of all three islands in Norway's Svalbard Archipelago - together with Nordaustlandet Island and Edgeoya Island . The archipelago is located north of the Arctic Circle, about midway between mainland Norway and the Geographic North Pole - the Earth's northernmost point.
Spitsbergen has total area 39044 km2 (15075 mi2), ranking it Norway's largest (followed by Senja - 1586 km2 / 613 mi2) and the world's 36th largest island. Its highest elevation point (Newtontoppen) is 1717 m (5633 ft).
Svalbard cruises are among Norway's most popular ship travel destinations - together with Norwegian Fjords (along the country's coastline). In Svalbard, tourism is an important and heavily supported industry, popularized) by "University Centre in Svalbard" and "Svalbard Global Seed Vault".
Svalbard islands were first used as whaling bases (in the 17th-18th centuries), then were abandoned. At the beginning of the 20th century started coal mining operations and several permanent settlements were established. In 1925, Svalbard was officially incorporated into the Kingdom of Norway. Today, Norway's Store Norske and Russia's Arktikugol are the only mining companies there.
The list of Svalbard settlements (all on Spitsbergen) includes Longyearbyen (main and largest, population around 2,700), Barentsburg (Russian mining community), Ny-Ålesund (research station), Sveagruva (aka Svea, Norwegian mining community) and Pyramiden (Russian settlement /coal-mining community, population around 20). Moellerhaven is a port/landing point on the island. Instead of roads, the only transportation between the settlements is via aircraft, boats and snowmobiles. Svalbard Airport (at Longyearbyen) serves as the archipelago's main gateway.
Svalbard is world's northernmost settlement with a permanent civilian population. There are other settlements farther north, but they are all populated by rotating groups of researchers. South Spitsbergen National Park (officially "Sor-Spitsbergen") was opened in 1973 and encompasses island's southern end. The nature park includes Lands Wedel Jarlsberg, Torell, and Sorkapp. Over 65% of this territory is covered with ice caps, while much of the rest is tundra (treeless vegetation). The park is also an important bird area with bird sanctuaries on protected islands with freshwater ponds, grassy vegetation and bare rocks. Among those is Isoyane (also recognized as Ramsar site/important wetland). The park supports breeding populations of barnacle goose (around 1000 pairs), common eider (around 1000 pairs), black-legged kittiwake (over 25900 pairs), thick-billed murre (over 200,000 pairs).
Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park includes parts of northwest Spitsbergen (Lands Albert I and Haakon VII) and some of the nearby islands (including Danes, and Moffen). In park's Bockfjorden part there are hot springs and remains of volcanoes.
14th July Glacier (Fjortende Julibreen)
The Fjortende Julibreen glacier is in the Haakon VII Land and has length approx 16 km (10 mi) and an area of approx 127 km2 (49 mi2). The 14th July Glacier is bounded (to the south) by Reppingen, Lovlandfjellet and Mercantonfjellet, and to the north by Casimir-Périerkammen, Forelryggen and Foreltinden. The glacier extends to Krossfjorden (Fjortende Julibukta) and is named after the France's National Day (14the of July).
Bellsund (aka Bellsound) has length 20 km (12 mi) and is located on the island's west coast, north of Wedel Jarlsberg Land and south of Nordenskiöld Land. This fjord sound is separated from Van Mijenfjorden by Akseloya Island and Mariaholmen Island. In 1615, the Dutch built here the Spitsbergen Island's first permanent whaling station (on the Bellsund's south side).
Hornsund Fjord
Hornsund is a fjord located on the western side of Spitsbergen Island's southernmost tip. The mouth of the fjord faces west to Greenland Sea, and is 12 km (8 mi) wide. The length is 30 km (19 mi), the mean depth/average water depth is 90 m (300 ft), and the max depth is 260 m (850 ft). Hornsund Fjord cuts different geo formations, from upper Mesozoic (east) to Precambrian (west) and is perpendicular to Spitsbergen's major regional fractures.
Hornsund Fjord's coastline is diversified, with several bays at the mouths of glacial valleys. Some of the bays appeared in the early-20th-century due to glacier recession. A research station from Poland operates in Hornsund since 1957.
Isfjorden is located on the island's west side and is Svalbard's second longest fjord (107 km / 66 mi) - after Wijdefjord (108 km / 67 mi). Alkhornet Mountain is on Isfjord's northern side, as well as the coastal Daudmannsoyra plain. Part of Isfjorden is designated as "Nordre Isfjorden Land National Park" (wilderness reserve). Around Isfjorden are located many of Svalbard's largest settlements - Barentsburg, Longyearbyen (Adventfjorden) and Pyramiden.
Sassenfjorden (part of Isfjorden) is located between Lands of Bunsow and Nordenskiol. Sassenfjord's inner branch is named Tempelfjorden (located between the Lands of Bunsow and Sabine).
Tempelfjord (near Longyearbyen) is part of the Isfjord and popular as day-trip destination during spring (March-April-May) offering activities like snowmobile- and dog-sledge tours. During summer, Tempelfjord is a great destination for boat tours.
Krossfjorden is a 30-km long fjord located on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest and only permanently populated of the Svalbard islands. The fjord branches into Kollerfjorden, Lillehookfjorden, and Mollerfjorden (to the north).
In 1610, the English whaler Jonas Poole (1566-1612) entered Krossfjorden and named it "Close Cove". On a map of 1612, it was labeled as "Closse Sound". A small bay in the southwestern entrance of Krossfjorden was named by Poole "Cross Road" (now Ebeltofthamna). This was Spitsbergen 's first whaling station (1611). The remains of a later station were found there and on a long, low arm of the beach between a lagoon and the fjord. On the other side of lagoon's mouth exists a graveyard from that period. The name of the small harbor soon referred to the fjord, resulting in the modern name "Krossfjorden".
Liefdefjorden
Liefdefjorden (translated "The Love Fjord", aka Liefde Bay / "Love Bay") is located in Haakon VII Land, at the Spitsbergen Island's northern side. This fjord has length of approx 30 km (19 mi). Of its outer part is the Reinsdyrflya Peninsula.
Kongsfjorden
Kongsfjorden (Kongs Fjord) is an inlet (on Spitsbergen's west coast) with length 26 km (16 mi) and width 6-14 km (4-9 mi). At the head of Kongsfjord are situated the glaciers Kronebreen and Kongsvegen. Ny-Alesund is on the fjord's southern shore.
Kongsfjorden was discovered and named (as "Deer Sound") in 1610 by Jonas Poole (1566-1612/English explorer and sealer) who was well-known for his voyages to Bear Island/Bjornoya (1604-1609) and the three whaling expeditions to Spitsbergen (1610-1611-1612).
Magdalena Fjord
Magdalena Fjord (officially Magdalenefjorden) has length 8 km (5 mi) and width 5 km (3 mi). This fjord is on the west coast, between Reuschhalvoya and Hoelhalvoya (Albert I Land). On its southern shore is Gullybukta Bay. Magdalenefjorden is large enough even for the biggest cruise ships , which can turn around 180 degrees inside the fjord.
The first to explore Magdalenefjorden was William Barents (1550-97, Dutch navigator and cartographer) in 1596. Here he discovered walrus tusks, which resulted in naming the fjord "Tusk Bay". Robert Fotherby (English whaler) entered Magdalenefjorden in 1614, claimed it for King James I of England (1567-1625) and named it "Maudlen Sound". He named the sheltered bay on the southern shore "Trinity Harbor".
Subsequently, the British founded a whaling station in Trinity Harbor (currently Gravneset). Later it was taken over by the Dutch. The remains of furnaces (blubber ovens) have been found on Gravneset, along with a graveyard containing around 130 graves dating from 17th to late 18th century.
Raudfjorden
Raudfjord or Raudfjorden ("Red fjord") is a 5 km wide and 20 km long fjord on Spitsbergen's northwestern coast. It has two southern branches (Ayerfjorden and Klinckowströmfjorden) split by Buchananhalvøya Peninsula. The fjord is located on the divide between Haakon VII Land and Albert I Land.
In 1614, Robert Fotherby named Raudfjorden "Red-cliff Sound". The same year the Dutch called it "Monier Bay", after Anthonie Monier (general of their whaling fleet). The Dutch first marked the latter name from 1620 onwards. Fjord's former name was later twisted to Red Bay. Robert Fotherby also named the cape separating its southern branches (currently known as Narreneset).
St Jonsfjorden
St Jonsfjorden (in Oscar II Land) has length 21 km (13 mi) and opens westwards into Forlandsundet Strait. Fjord's most popular glaciers are named (listed alphabetically) Bukkebreen, Bullbreen, Charlesbreen, Devikbreen, Gaffelbreen, Konowbreen, Osbornebreen, Paulbreen, Vegardbreen, Vintervegen.
Trygghamna is a bay on Spitsbergen's west coast - near the entrance to Isfjord. Here are the remains of a 17th-century English whaling station and an 18th-century Russian station (used by Pomors / Russian settlers, primarily from Novgorod). Alkhornet (mountain forming cliffs on Isfjord entrance's north side) is nearby. In the mountain's upper part there is a nesting colony of guillemots. Below the cliffs is the den of Arctic Foxes, who scavenge on fallen chicks and eggs. Also on the grassy coastal plain tourists may see reindeer and some bird species - barnacle geese, eider ducks, Glaucous gulls, Brunich's guillemots.
Woodfjorden
Woodfjorden is a fjord located on Spitsbergen's north shore. By length (64 km / 40 mi) it is ranked Svalbard's 4th longest fjord. It is located at nearly 80 degrees north and is constantly affected by glaciers. Woodfjord is west of Andree Land (separating Wijdefjorden and Woodfjorden).
Hinlopen Strait
Hinlopen Strait (officially Hinlopenstretet) separates Spitsbergen from Nordaustlandet Island and has length 150 km (93 mi) and width 10-60 km (6-37 mi). As waterway, it is not easily passable due to pack ice in the region.
The strait is named after Thijmen Jacobsz Hinlopen (1572–1637), one of the leaders of Noordsche Compagnie (Dutch merchant and whaling company). Its northern part (between the peninsulas Mosselhalvoya and Storsteinhalvoya) is called Nordporten. Its southern part (Sorporten) widens up between Bastian Islands and Brasvellbreen Glacier.
Hinlopen Strait was known to European whalers since early-17th-century and was extensively used for hunting. Many scientific Arctic expeditions have passed through the strait in the late-19th-early-20th centuries. Among those was the Russian-Swedish "Arc-de-Meridian" expedition (1899-1904), which had one main station in Sorgfjord. In 1957, Sweden established its national station in Kinnvika (Murchisonfjord), but this base was abandoned in 1959.
Spitsbergen Island cruise terminal
Depending on weather, cruise ships anchor near the island's coast and offload their passengers via tender boats or Zodiac boats (inflatable boats on small-sized luxury- and expedition-type cruise vessels).
- Reindyrfla is the island's largest tundra area featuring lakes and a vast plain providing grazing ground for waders and reindeer breeded here. On the lakes you can spot red-throated loon (aka diver, migratory seabird) and king eider (sea duck).
- Alkefjellet is a bird cliff in Ny-Friesland (facing towards Hinlopen Strait).
- The list of cruise tour activities and land excursions offered on the Spitsbergen Island includes: wildlife watching (walrus, birds), sea kayaking, jiking, boat excursions, dog-sledging and snowmobile tours.

Welcome to Norway!
You’ll arrive in Bergen, a beautiful city on Norway’s west coast. Admire views of the majestic peaks that famously surround the city, earning Bergen the nickname of ‘The City of Seven Mountains’.
What began as a small village was developed by King Olav Kyree in 1070 AD and is now Norway’s second-largest city. Nestled in the centre is Vågen Bay, the historic core of the city, and home to the UNESCO-listed Bryggen quarter. There, you can wander down charming cobblestone streets and peruse local boutique shops. Across from Bryggen, you’ll find the fish market, which cooks up fresh and delicious seafood dishes to feast on.
As you’re here in the summer, the days are long, giving you more hours of daylight to explore this historic city. One of the seven mountains in Bergen’s nickname is Mount Fløyen, accessible by walking up or taking the Fløibanen funicular. At the top, enjoy some stunning views of the city and nearby peaks.
Reward yourself and your thirst with some local 7 Fjell beer, before going to your hotel to get some rest, ready to embark on your Svalbard Express voyage the next day.
*Please note that if the date you make your booking is less than 90 days before your chosen departure date, your voyage will start on Day 2 in Bergen.
Sailing the Svalbard Express
After you wake up in your hotel, enjoy some time in the early morning to further explore Bergen before your transfer arrives at the hotel to bring you to our comfortable guest lounge at the Bergen Terminal.
Bergen has been the starting point for many Norwegian Coastal Express cruises for generations, and the stylish guest lounge here is exclusive for our guests. Sample finger-food from our Norway’s Coastal Kitchen or talk to staff about securing a spot on any optional excursions still available.
Once we’ve welcomed you aboard, talk to your ship’s Coastal Experience team, who will be your hosts and guides to the Norwegian coast and Svalbard. Meet your shipmates and take some time to settle in to your new home-away-from-home.
Enjoy your first meal aboard the ship, and watch the row of colorful buildings on the seafront get smaller behind you as you sail into the Norwegian Sea.
Alpine village by the fjord
Our first port of call is Åndalsnes, located along Isfjord at the end of Romsdalsfjord. After docking in the morning in the town center, you can explore this picturesque coastal town, home to about 2,000 people.
From 1838 until 1964, the village of Åndalsnes served as the administrative center of the old municipality of Grytten and was completely rebuilt after an attack during World War II. Åndalsnes is now a modern town (it even has its own newspaper) in one of Norway’s most stunning natural locations.
The highlights (literally) of Åndalsnes are the mountains that tower over the town. Experience the Norwegian concept of friluftsliv (a love of the outdoors) through a variety of activities, such as hiking to the Rampestreken viewpoint.
For a calmer way to take in the sights, sit back on the relaxing Romsdal Gondola or travel the winding Trollstigen Pass by bus. Whichever activities you choose, today will bring you the best views of Isfjord, Romsdalsfjord, and the surrounding peaks.
Norway’s oldest fishing community
We’ll sail along the coast of the Helgeland region in the morning. When you see islands rising out of the water in the distance, you’ll know we’re almost at our next destination.
Træna is an archipelago that sits at the edge of the Arctic Circle, 33 nautical miles northwest of the mainland. Made up of around 500 islands, islets and skerries (only four of which are inhabited year-round), Træna is a quiet municipality, with birdlife thriving on the mostly uninhabited isles.
Though small, this archipelago has a long history. Archeological finds indicate that the islands have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Some of these ancient relics have been found in a cave on the island of Sanna, which is now used as a venue for an annual music festival.
Spend the afternoon in one of Norway’s oldest fishing communities. Weather permitting, you may be able to enjoy activities such as culture walks, Arctic swimming, or even island hopping.
You could also head out on deck to scan the skies for sea eagles, the largest bird of prey in Norway. Or, for a truly authentic experience, step into the age-old shoes of a Norwegian fisherman and cast a line under the summer sun.
When it’s time to leave in the evening, take some time to rest and unwind on board. We’ll cross the Arctic Circle as we continue heading north, commemorating the moment with a little Norwegian ceremony.
The Tip of Lofoten
Today, we explore the famed Lofoten Islands. Watch for the steep mountains rising from the sea as we approach from the south in the morning.
We dock in Reine, an important – and picture-perfect – fishing village since 1743. This is one of the most-photographed landscapes in all of Norway, where red-painted rorbuer cling to a string of islands beneath sharp mountain ranges reflected in the waters below.
Not far to the south of Reine, at the western tip of the Lofoten archipelago, you’ll find Å, one of the best-preserved traditional fishing villages in Norway. You can visit it on an optional excursion.
At the heart of this tiny village is the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, which covers the importance and development of fishing in Lofoten over the last 250 years.
Gateway to the Arctic
Tromsø is northern Norway’s urban Arctic hotspot, boasting impressive architecture, hip restaurants, and the world’s northernmost university. Rich in polar history, it makes for a natural stopping point before we go farther north into the High Arctic.
This modern city has a long legacy, with artifacts found that date back to the Ice Age. The city grew in importance after being declared a kjøpstad , or ‘market town’ in 1794, despite only being home to 80 people. It became a center of Arctic hunting in the mid-1800s. By the end of the 19th century, Tromsø was an established Arctic trade center.
We aim to dock here in the morning, giving you a whole day to explore this historic Arctic city and its surroundings. Learn more about the culture and polar history of Tromsø on a city walk. Or go see seals at the Polaria center, one of the world’s northernmost aquariums. Here, you can see various species of Arctic marine life up close.
There may also be an option to visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, which has an enormous and colorful stained-glass window. Towering over Tromsø is Storsteinen Mountain, accessible via Fjellheisen Cable Car for exceptionally beautiful views of the city, mountains, and fjords.
At the top of Europe
Around mid-morning, we arrive at Honningsvåg, the northernmost city in mainland Norway. Honningsvåg is a young city, having only been declared as such in 1996, and it remains one of Norway’s smallest cities today.
You have several optional excursions to pick from here. These could include king crab fishing, meeting an indigenous Sámi family, birdwatching, or a guided tour of what life is like at 71°N.
Honningsvåg is also the gateway to the North Cape, the famed “northernmost point of Europe”. The plateau stands 307 metres above the sea, and is just over 1,000 miles south of the geographical North Pole. Take a moment to gaze out across the sea from a top the soaring cliffs, watching the waves crash against the rocks below.
Standing proudly on top of one of the cliffs is an iconic globe monument which invites all visitors to take a quick selfie. Selfie sorted, you’ll also want to visit North Cape Hall, which has a variety of exhibits and a short film that tells of the cape’s history.
Sailing away from Honningsvåg, we’ll enjoy dramatic views of the plateau from the sea. The ship will head further into the Barents Sea, leaving mainland Norway’s coast far behind us.
Between Norway and Svalbard
The southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, Bjørnøya, sits just past the halfway point between mainland Norway and Spitsbergen. We’ll be viewing this inaccessible land from the ship in the afternoon, so think of this as the prologue to your Svalbard adventure.
Upon seeing the island, you might notice the lack of trees—there are hardly even bushes. Very little grows here, with the land partly being covered only by a layer of moss and lichen. Whatever grows here is fertilized by the abundant birdlife that nests on the sea cliffs. Get your camera ready to capture little auks, puffins, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern fulmars flying over dramatic cliff tops and steep slopes, alongside many other seabird species.
Contrary to its name, which means ‘Bear Island’, the only native mammals are Arctic foxes. The island was named after a polar bear was spotted swimming in the waters nearby, but this is an unlikely sight this far south.
Aboard the ship, learn about Bjørnøya’s history through polar history lectures. You might find out about the historic expeditions that led to its discovery and the subsequent claims that various countries have attempted to make over the island. Discover the strategic importance of this unreachable sanctuary, and the role Bjørnøya played in World War II.
Sailing on from Bjørnøya, continue to make use of MS Trollfjord’s various onboard facilities to relax, such as the sauna or fitness room.
At the edge of the world
Today, we arrive at the Svalbard archipelago and make our way up to Spitsbergen, the largest of the three main islands. Magnificent brown and green mountains rise and ripple up from the High Arctic tundra while rivers of snow-melt trickle through the valley plains, glistening under the summer sun.
Spend a moment just taking in Svalbard. You’re at a latitude more than 78°N and less than 820 miles from the North Pole. The air is fresh and pure, and the overall temperature in summer is mild, thanks to a warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream.
You’ll disembark the ship at Longyearbyen, nestled on the banks of a sweeping fjord. It is the biggest settlement in Svalbard and pegged as the world’s northernmost settlement with a population over 1,000.
Home to some 2,000 inhabitants from across the world, it originally sprang up as a coal mining colony in 1906. Today, it is a hub for adventure travelers and scientists and engineers attached to local research projects, like the famous Global Seed Vault.
After transferring and checking in to your hotel, in the evening it’s then on to Camp Barentz, located at the foot of Breinosa mountain, for a true Svalbard wilderness experience. There, enjoy dinner in a cozy wooden cabin and maybe even try some bidos (a traditional, homemade Sámi stew of slow-cooked reindeer meat and vegetables).
Savor your dessert around the campfire, perhaps under the Midnight Sun. End your day admiring the mountains as we head back to your hotel in Longyearbyen.
*Please note that if the date you make your booking is less than 90 days before your chosen departure date, your voyage will end on Day 9 in Longyearbyen.
Mini-adventure in the High Arctic
After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll be off on a mini-adventure aboard hybrid-electric catamaran MS Bard. Make the most of the summer climate as you take a tour on the water amidst Spitsbergen’s magnificent landscapes at Billefjord and Nordenskiöldbreen.
MS Bard is a groundbreaking new catamaran for day cruises. Whenever it approaches glaciers, wildlife, or settlements, it will run silently on electric propulsion. Its specially designed propellers create minimal noise and vibration so as not to disturb Arctic wildlife.
Early in the season, there might still be ice in Billefjord. Switching to the boat's electric motor, we’ll carefully and silently follow the ice’s edge on the lookout for seabirds, walrus, and seals. Enjoy views of the beautiful and vast Nordenskiöld glacier, which crumbles icebergs into the fjord.
Along the way, spot the abandoned Soviet coal mining town Pyramiden in the distance, so named after the shape of a nearby mountain. It remained a ghost town for many years, but there have been recent attempts by various individuals to repopulate the area.
On the outer park of Billefjord is Skansbukta, another small settlement and gypsum mine lost to time under the impressive cliffs. MS Bard will also sail past Svenskhuset, the oldest standing building on Spitsbergen and site of the tragic lead poisoning that claimed the lives of 17 hunters and sailors through tinned food.
Admiring the views of the fjord, glacier, mountains, and Arctic flora in bloom, you’ll make your way back to Longyearbyen on MS Bard to spend the night at your hotel.
Return from the top of the world
Following breakfast at your hotel, it’s time to say farewell to Svalbard and to Spitsbergen. You’ll make your own way to the airport at Longyearbyen, marking the end of your time with us. Alternatively, you could choose to extend your stay in Svalbard.
You won’t soon forget the slices of paradise you’ve seen along the Norwegian coast and Svalbard as part of this iconic cruise. If you’ve taken in optional excursions, you will have photos of you kayaking, hiking, fishing, or cycling in some of the most beautiful scenery you’ve ever seen.
We know you’ll take fond memories home with you and we wish you a safe onward journey. This is the Svalbard Express. We hope to see you back here with us soon.
We have several ships in the fleet that we travel with.
