Small local rugby scene in Malta with a big heart

Malta has a small rugby community with 5 local clubs. Each year, we welcome numerous teams from the UK and other European countries for our exceptional Malta rugby tours and rugby tournaments. We set up each trip with great care and respect for the game for an exceptional rugby tour, we normally host all teams in the lively town of St. Julian’s. Here, you’re guaranteed to be thoroughly entertained throughout your trip, with abundant nightlife and entertainment options within walking distance.

With our Malta rugby tours we offer various additional trips to impress

Beyond the rugby matches, why not include some amazing activities and great value outings . Join a thrilling quad tour to the sister island of Gozo, an unforgettable boat party complete with unlimited drinks, and a farewell dinner with three hours of free-flowing beer and wine in a terrace restaurant in town.

Rugby matches and events with local teams at the Marsa rugby grounds

All rugby normally takes place at the Marsa Rugby Grounds. The pitches that you will play on are natural turf pitches. A post-match celebration follows, known as the “third half,” alongside the local team. This comes along with some fun, games and banter as is custom tradition in this magnificent sport.

Book with the experts, we take pride in being the best at what we do, rugby tours are our pride and joy

Wonderful trip! Enjoyed this beautiful part of the world! Hotels were amazing; food was incredible.

What people love about Malta Tours

Our tour was excellent. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and nice personable people. The hotel the tour provided was excellent. All and all I would highly recommend our tour.
We had an amazing time with the tour planned in Malta. Julia was our guide for most the time with Jonathan as our driver. Our last tour guide was Dennis. Julia was so Informed and clearly inspired to share her wealth of knowledge of Valletta and Malta. She left no stone unturned. She was kind, funny, accepting of our physical restrictions, always on time, and very courteous, “Sir” Jonathan was a terrific driver and even volunteered to help us out the day after our stay. Always prompt, VERY safe driver and funny. Dennis was also terrific for the one day we had him instilling humor and knowledge with his tour. Omar was our initial arranger and he communicated quickly with every question I had. Nothing was ever left undone or not answered. Hotel arrangements went without a hitch as well as all our planned days. He even made concessions to make sure we had a ride to the other hotel and the airport with Jonathan even after our initial tour. I have nothing but high praises for our entire experience with TourRadar. We will certainly use them again for future trips. Thank you SO much Omar, Julia, Jonathan and Dennis!!!!

Malta - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The Valletta waterfront is a must visit on a holiday to Malta

Get a taste of island living and plan your next trip to Malta! It is a small Mediterranean island that lies to the south of Sicily. Although the island is relatively small, it is known for being densely populated, with a population just under 500,000.

If you're looking for some aquatic fun on your trip, you've come to the right place! There is plenty of sailing and scuba diving fun to be had! No matter what time of year you plan a holiday to Malta, snorkeling and diving expeditions are always available. The water is usually clear, making Malta a great place to learn to dive for beginners!

Tour Highlights

  • Attend the Valletta Carnival. Plan accordingly because the Valletta Carnival is a giant national costume competition taking place during February every year.
  • Go scuba diving at Sliema or Buġibba; or snorkeling at Anchor Bay to check out the beautiful aquatic wildlife.
  • Walk through the quiet alleys of Mdina at night.
  • Check out the Malta Arts Festival. What better way to get a taste of art in Malta! A variety of artistic mediums are celebrated at the festival, including music, theatre, and dance.
  • Check out Malta's rich cinematic history. It has rightfully earned its nickname as the “Los Angeles of the Mediterranean”. If you're a movie enthusiast, you'll be in heaven!
  • For the liquor enthusiast, go on wine tours to taste some of the fine wine produced in Malta or try some of the locally brewed beer during at the annual Beer Festival usually held in July.

Travel Tips

  • Don't forget sunscreen! If you're planning to hit the beach, remember that Malta is a Mediterranean island!
  • Malta is a relatively safer country however, be wary of pickpockets while visiting tourist areas.
  • 10% tipping at restaurants is the standard norm here.
  • Observe customs, don't criticize them! Malta, like any foreign country, will bring a fair amount of culture shock along with the experience. For example, bar brawls occur frequently, stay safe by not getting involved.
  • Embrace spontaneity. Being a fairly small sized country, it is easy to go around. However, buy a local SIM card if you wish to stay connected throughout your vacation.
  • Try to plan your visit during one of Malta’s many carnivals or festivals! Not only is it a wonderful occasion, but an opportunity to get some insight as to what the locals celebrate and hold dear.
  • There are plenty of art related festivals as well as ones which celebrate Malta’s growing Jazz music scene.

Ta’ Qali National Stadium

Ta' Qali National Stadium

Club: various | Opening: 1980 | Capacity: 17,797 seats

History and description

Ta’ Qali National Stadium is the national stadium of Malta and the largest stadium on the island. It was built to provide the island with a new and modern national stadium, replacing the old Empire Stadium in Gzira near Valletta.

The stadium officially opened on 14 December 1980. It was built on the site of a former RAF airbase not far from the historic city of Mdina. In 2002, a new main stand was built, which also houses the offices of the Malta Football Association.

Besides being the home of the national team, Ta’ Qali Stadium, alongside Hibernians Stadium and Victor Tedesco Stadium, is also one of the three stadiums used to host Malta’s top flight matches.

How to get to Ta’ Qali National Stadium

Ta’ Qali National Stadium is located in the centre of the island of Malta at roughly 9 kilometres west from the capital Valletta (and a similar distance from the Sliema and St Julian’s tourist areas), and a little over 1.5 kilometres north-east from the historic city of Mdina.

The stadium is clearly visible from the city walls of Mdina and can be walked to from the old city in about 20 to 30 minutes, though Maltean roads aren’t the most suitable for pedestrians. Bus 56, 186, and 202 furthermore connect Mdina (and Rabat) with the stadium.

Bus 56 is also the bus to take if you’re coming from the capital of Valletta (from the main bus station just outside the city walls). Buses run once an hour for the 30-minute journey. An alternative is catching one of the regular buses that connect Valletta with Mdina (e.g. 50, 51, 52, 53, and 250) and get of at stop Qali Interchange. It’s a 15-minute walk from there or change to bus 56, 186, or 202.

If coming from Sliema or St Julian’s / Paceville, catch bus 202. Buses run once an hour for the approximate 1-hour journey. Take bus 186 from St. Paul’s Bay (Bugibba).

From the airport, which lies further south on the island, catch bus X3 and, after 45 minutes, get off at stop Qali Interchange. Walk for 15 minutes to the stadium or change to bus 56, 186, or 202.

Address: H’Attard ATD 4000, Malta

Eat, drink, and sleep near Ta’ Qali National Stadium

Ta’ Qali National Stadium is located in the countryside just outside Malta’s main urban area. It is surrounded by farmlands and a complex including other sports facilities, a convention centre, the Malta Aviation Museum, and a crafts village.

It’s a quiet area with little around in terms of eating and drinking, which is better done in nearby Mdina or in Malta’s tourist areas.

There are no hotels directly near Ta’ Qali National Stadium. If you wish to stay close, stay at nearby Mdina or Rabat. Most will decide to stay in Malta’s tourist areas though, for example in Valletta ‘s old town, Sliema , or Saint Julian’s .

Click here  to explore the hotels near Ta’ Qali Stadium and elsewhere on Malta.

Malta National Team Tickets

Tickets for Malta matches can be bought online , at the MFA offices at Ta’ Qali Stadium, or from any of the other official retail outlets.

Centrally located outlets include Eros Stationary at 33 Triq Il-Wilga in Paceville, the Matrix electronics store on Republic Street in old Valletta, and the Matrix store at SkyParks Centre at Malta International Airport.

If not sold out, and this is generally not the case, tickets can also be bought at the ticket booths of Ta’ Qali Stadium on the day of the match.

Expect to pay from €10.00 for a seat behind the goal to €25.00 for a seat at the West Stand.

Watch: Peerless Pogacar wins Giro d’Italia, next stop Tour de France

' src=

  • May 26, 2024

malta sport tour

Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia on Sunday, crossing the finish line in Rome in glorious sunshine and with the biggest winning margin in almost six decades.

The 25-year-old UAE Emirates rider won six of the 21 stages on the 3,400km tour that began in Turin, finishing 9min 56sec ahead of Colombia’s Daniel Martinez of Bora while Geraint Thomas of Ineos was 10min 24sec off the winning pace in third.

The overall triumph was sealed Sunday on the 21st stage around Rome, which was won by Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier, who picked up his third stage win of the 2024 Giro.

Billed as a champion in waiting, Pogacar proved peerless taking the lead as early as stage two and rampaging across the peaks, plains and picturesque panoramas to triumph by the largest margin at any of cycling’s grand tours since Vittorio Adorni won the Giro by 11min 26sec in 1965.

The swashbuckling Slovenian showman was decked out in the iconic pink leader’s jersey, riding a pink bike and even arriving on a pink bus as the route raced south.

Hoping to become the first rider to win both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France since Marco Pantani in 1998, Pogacar resembled more another rider, Eddy Merckx, also known for wanting to win as many stages as possible.

He won the opening time-trial, and the following day’s first major summit finish and would go on to romp home on the Queen stage in the Dolomites, doubling his lead in the process.

Italians took to Pogacar, cheering him through the dramatic port of Genoa, the chic Tuscan town of Lucca and the southern port of Naples and Pompei in the shadow of the volcanic Mount Vesuvius.

The two-time Tour de France winner had extended his lead slowly up the Adriatic coastline before the third week’s relentless series of ascents and descents in the Alps.

Out to prove Merckx wrong

Should Pogacar pull off the ambitious Giro-Tour double he will join a list of legends in Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil, Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Stephen Roche, Miguel Indurain and Pantani.

Pogacar burst onto the scene winning three stages at the Vuelta a Espana in 2019 and coming third.

The following year he pulled off one of cycling’s biggest ever surprises when he overhauled a 90-second gap on Primoz Roglic to take the lead at the very end of the Tour de France in 2020.

In 2021, Pogacar dominated the Tour to claim back-to-back triumphs, before a rival emerged in the form of Danish Visma rider Jonas Vingegaard.

The wispy Dane has dominated Pogacar on the very toughest mountain stages, allowing Pogacar to tack up the stage wins as he himself remained firmly focussed on the overall.

Merckx stated in 2023 that for now the Dane was the best Grand Tour rider, but Vingegaard is scrambling to achieve top fitness for the Tour de France after a nasty crash at the Tour of the Basque Country.

While Pogacar had no visible rival at the Giro, Vingegaard will be just one hazard to watch out for on the French roads, with Belgian maverick Remco Evenepoel, Colombian climber Egan Bernal and old foe Roglic all muddying the waters on a wide-open roster ripe for surprises this July.

Fact or Fiction: LIV Golf Needs to Play Where the PGA Tour Doesn’t

John schwarb , bob harig , jeff ritter , john pluym | may 29, 2024.

LIV Golf plays all around the world but some of its U.S. stops are in the same cities as PGA Tour events.

Welcome back to SI Golf’s Fact or Fiction, where we're recharged after a Memorial Day weekend where we led the field in strokes-gained grilling.

Once again, we’re here to debate a series of statements for writers and editors to declare as “Fact” or “Fiction” along with a brief explanation. Responses may also (occasionally) be “Neutral” since there's a lot of gray area in golf.

Do you agree or disagree? Let us know on the SI Golf X account.

LIV Golf announced that its team championship will be Sept. 20-22 near Dallas , an area that has two annual PGA Tour events including last week at Colonial. Its individual championship is the week prior outside Chicago, which isn’t on the Tour’s calendar every year. LIV Golf should only play in markets that don’t have annual PGA Tour events.

Bob Harig: FACT. LIV Golf’s original mantra was that it was to be “additive.” It seems, perhaps by accident, that it is being too competitive. Case in point: playing the same week as PGA Tour signature events, as LIV will go both before and after the U.S. Open. Not sure how that serves the golf fan who might be interested in both products. Same with going to new markets. LIV espouses growing the game and yet eight of its 14 events will be in North America and the Dallas event is in an area already served by plenty of golf. It’s important to note that matching up venues with dates is not easy but you’d think they would want to avoid going to the same market.

John Pluym: FACT. Is LIV trying to go head to head with the PGA Tour? Sure feels that way. Why else would you play in the same markets as the Tour? I’d love it if LIV played at Hazeltine National in Minnesota. We love our golf here and we have some of the best courses in the country. Hazeltine, in fact, has hosted many major golf tournaments and the Ryder Cup. I’m in the mood for some golf club throwing by Jon Rahm.

Jeff Ritter: FACT. Second Harig’s assessment here. If LIV wants to max out its potential impact, and its on-site attendance in particular, it should make every effort to go where others aren’t.

John Schwarb: FACT. My town, Indianapolis, hasn’t had pro golf since the LPGA in 2019. Would folks show out for a LIV event? I say yes. How about Louisville, which delivered massive crowds two weeks ago and may not see the pros again for a while? Again, it takes three to tango between LIV and a city and a course and there’s plenty of non-golf factors that can’t be ignored but just from a pure U.S. strategy standpoint, if I’m LIV executives I’m looking everywhere but PGA Tour strongholds.

This week’s U.S. Women’s Open is headlined by Nelly Korda , a winner in six of her last seven starts on the LPGA Tour. It would be an upset if she didn’t win the season’s second major.

Bob Harig: FICTION. As great as she has been this year, Korda can’t win them all, as we saw recently when her five-tournament winning streak was broken. It happens. And could very well happen again. Taking Korda against the field is tempting but still not wise even with all of her dominance.

Jeff Ritter: FACT. I mean, she’s the betting favorite, so doesn’t everyone else in the field therefore become an underdog? Nelly’s been awesome. It certainly wouldn’t be a shock if she doesn’t lift a trophy on Sunday, but this event starts with her.

Nelly Korda hits out of a fairway bunker on the 17th hole at January's LPGA Drive On Championship at the Bradenton Country Cl

John Schwarb: FACT. Anything can happen in golf (see Scottie/Brooks/Rory when the talk was them vs. the field at the PGA) but Korda is at that level of stardom where casual fans just look to see where she is on a leaderboard. If she’s not at the top of a major, in the midst of this run, it’s a mild upset if not more.

John Pluym: FACT. I have to agree with Jeff and John on this one. Korda has been dominant. Nancy Lopez dominant. Tiger Woods dominant. She’s the betting favorite, so it’d be an upset if she didn’t win. Unless she somehow gets distracted by a traffic violation on the way to the golf course.

Davis Riley won a custom Corvette Stingray at the Charles Schwab Challenge, which has awarded restored classic cars to champions for several years. These are the coolest winners’ spoils at regular PGA Tour events.

Bob Harig: FACT. The distinction here is regular event, because it would be difficult to top a green jacket or a Claret Jug. But a classic car in addition to the gob of prize money is pretty sweet.

John Pluym: FACT. Who wouldn’t want a custom Corvette Stingray? What a sweet prize. But I agree with Bob. Nothing can top a green jacket or a Claret  Jug. And I’ll add another one: the Wanamaker Trophy is not too shabby, either.

Jeff Ritter: FICTION. The cars are cool, but give me Arnie’s red cardigan at the API here.

John Schwarb: FACT. Many PGA Tour trophies and tchotchkes are mediocre, and subject to change with new sponsors and tournament names. Charles Schwab—a Tour sponsor for a long time—has had five years of cool rides and I’m looking forward to the next one, which adds some juice to an event in a slow spot on the golf calendar.

Grayson Murray, Winner of Two PGA Tour Titles, Dies at 30

Murray, who was outspoken about his depression and alcohol abuse, had begun a comeback after several volatile years, winning this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii.

The golfer Grayson Murray in profile wears a white cap, green shirt and dark pants. He is holding a golf club.

By Emmett Lindner

Grayson Murray, the professional golfer who won two PGA Tour titles and was outspoken about his battles with depression and alcohol, died on Saturday. He was 30.

His death was confirmed in a statement on Saturday by the PGA Tour. He died by suicide, according to a PGA Tour statement that was released on Sunday on behalf of his parents.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” the statement said. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world.”

After a successful 40-foot putt to win the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, Murray rose to 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking, a career high. The event marked the height of a comeback run after several volatile years as Murray struggled with his mental health.

In a news conference after winning the Sony Open, Murray said that for a time he would drink during tournament weeks.

“Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year, but also feeling like I was invincible,” he said. “I’m a different man now, and I would not be in this position right now, today, if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”

He added that he had attended rehabilitation for a month. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues,” he said. Murray had failed to gain PGA Tour status for several months last year after a series of off-course events mirrored a decline in his play.

An alcohol-related incident at a hotel bar in Hawaii in 2021 led to his suspension from the PGA Tour. Afterward, he posted to social media.

“Why was I drunk?” he wrote, adding that he was an “alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

The golfer Phil Mickelson, who has struggled with a gambling addiction , responded at the time on social media , saying “If I can help in any way I’d be happy to.”

This year, Murray played well enough to qualify for the Masters Tournament and P.G.A. Championship. On Friday, he withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness.

Grayson Murray was born on Oct. 1, 1993, in Raleigh, N.C., according to an ESPN biography. Mr. Murray is survived by his parents, Eric and Terry, and his brother, Cameron, and sister, Erica, according to the statement.

He attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State Universities, and at 16 he became the second-youngest player to enter the Korn Ferry Tour, according to the PGA Tour.

He continued to gain prominence, playing in the U.S. Open at the age of 19 and clinching a win at the 2017 Barbasol Championship, sinking a five-foot putt for a one-stroke victory.

After losing his PGA Tour card for the 2023 season, and following an angry outburst directed at Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour’s commissioner, he seemed to have found his swing again. He won two Korn Ferry Tour tournaments last year, regaining his PGA Tour eligibility, and finished in the top 10 at two events.

If you are having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for a list of additional resources.

Because of an editing error, the headline on an earlier version of this article misstated the winning record of Grayson Murray. He won two PGA Tour titles, not tours.

PGA Tour-LIV Golf Timeline: One year has passed and golf fans still are waiting for a deal

malta sport tour

It was one of those news drops all golf fans never will forget.

June 6, 2023: The PGA Tour and LIV Golf announce a "framework agreement" to merge business entities after weeks of secret negotiations.

The PGA Tour, whose roots go back more than a century, and LIV Golf, the upstart league launched in June 2021 with tour antagonist Greg Norman as its face and financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, forming an alliance?

This cannot be happening.

After two years of player poaching, lawsuits, nasty insults from both sides and talk of Saudi Arabia's atrocious human rights violations, the vision of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan side-by-side on a CNBC set detailing how the rival leagues will combine commercial businesses and rights into a new for-profit company, and drop all lawsuits, truly was surreal.

How has that gone?

At first, we were told that the "merger" — later reframed as an "agreement" — would be finalized by Dec. 31 and the PIF would be writing a very large check (somewhere between $1 billion and $2 billion) to boost PGA Tour Enterprises.  But New Year's Eve came and went without a deal, and now, one year later, we appear no closer than we were six months ago.

And after a brief cease-fire, some members, from both sides, resumed taking shots at each other, and LIV Golf, which has headquarters in West Palm Beach, went back to poaching PGA Tour stars.

"It's messy, and it has been and it seems to get messier every week," Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, said at the PGA Championship. "I don't think the game is big enough for two tours like that, and I think we are diluting the game in a way that is not healthy.

"I hope there's urgency because I do think it's doing damage to the tour, to the game. … I just don't think it's a healthy situation right now."

Here is a timeline of the ebbs and flows of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf when it comes to a possible merger:

If you can't beat them, join them

While surprised that everything came together so quickly, Rory McIlroy said the PGA Tour’s partnership with the PIF ultimately will be good for the game. Speaking the week the agreement was announced, McIlroy said much of it has been mischaracterized and it should not be viewed as a merger with LIV Golf.

“LIV has nothing to do with this," he said. "It’s the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the Public Investment Fund that are basically partnering to create a new company. That’s where I was a little frustrated. All I’ve wanted to do was protect the future of the PGA Tour and protect the aspirational nature of what the PGA Tour stands for. I think this does this.

"If you look at the structure, this new company sits above everything else. Jay on top of that. Technically, anyone involved with LIV would answer to Jay. The PIF was going to keep spending money in golf. At least the PGA Tour controls how that money is spent. You’re dealing with one of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the world. Would you rather fight against or have them as a partner?"

Greg Norman's message to staff

Although not involved in the negotiations, LIV's chief executive and commissioner Norman, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, had a positive message for the staff. Norman, who was left out of the negotiations and not mentioned in any of the news releases associated with the agreement, told more than 100 people on a 30-minute call that LIV will see no operational changes and that work is already being done on a 2025 schedule.

“The spigot is now wide open for commercial sponsorships, blue-chip companies, TV networks," he said. "LIV is and will continue to be a standalone enterprise. Our business model will not change. We changed history and we’re not going anywhere."

Players losing trust in Monahan

The main topic of conversation at the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club was the announcement the previous week. Some players were open about expressing their anger and lack of trust in the tour and Monahan.

"I think it gets to a point where you want to have faith in management, and I want to have faith that this is the best thing for all of us, but it's clear that that's not the consensus," Jon Rahm said. "I think the general feeling is that a lot of people feel a bit of betrayal from management."

Those words were prophetic coming from a man who, six months later, became the biggest name to defect from the PGA Tour.

Agreement dissected on Capitol Hill

About a month after the agreement, drama played out on Capitol Hill with tour COO Ron Price and policy board independent director Jimmy Dunne, of North Palm Beach, testifying at a Senate investigations subcommittee hearing.

They were grilled by a bipartisan committee that was concerned about antitrust violations. Aside from politicians attempting to bully Price and Dunne or just looking for air time, one of the more interesting revelations was the PIF proposing Tiger Woods and McIlroy being granted ownership of LIV Golf franchises. This idea was shot down by the PGA Tour.

Tiger getting involved

Before joining the PGA Tour policy board on Aug. 1, Woods led a group of more than 40 players in signing a list of demands of Monahan. The move was made to reestablish control of the PGA Tour after players heard about Monahan's secretive meetings with the PIF.

Woods became the sixth player director on the policy board, giving players more say in any final decisions.

Monahan regrets agreement rollout

Speaking for the first time since taking a medical leave of absence one week after the deal was announced because of anxiety over the deal, Monahan took responsibility for the awkward rollout of the framework agreement, saying there was a lot of misinformation leading to distrust.

"That's on me," he said.

“My biggest regret was not being more patient on the night of June 5, moving to make this announcement the next day."

Norman confident about LIV's future

In October, Norman spoke publicly for the first time since the agreement. He was at LIV's final event of the season at Doral.

Norman was upbeat and confident his league was on the upswing and promised LIV was here to stay. As far as his future … when asked about Price's comment at July's Senate subcommittee hearing that Norman is "out of a job" if a deal is reached, Norman shrugged.

"I knew it wasn't true," he said. "There's so much white noise floating around out there that I actually paid zero attention to.

"Sitting in this seat today, I know every step I've made has been for the right reasons. Right reasons for the game of golf. … So I was never in any fear of anybody saying anything or any animus against me or anything like that. Because the business model works."

LIV releases most of 2024 schedule

Soon after the conclusion of the 2023 season, LIV made it official that it was moving forward without interruption. Despite the ongoing negotiations, it announced most of its 2024 schedule, which included seven domestic and seven international events.

The original schedule did not include sites for the final two events: the individual and team championships. Those later were announced as Chicago and Dallas, respectively.

Rahm proves he has a price

Six months after the framework agreement, Rahm announced on Fox News: "I have officially joined LIV Golf." He was wearing an LIV letterman's jacket.

The Spaniard and No. 3 golfer in the world clearly is LIV's biggest and most important addition since its launch, sending the message, "We are still here, we are not going anywhere." And for LIV, that was worth the reported $550 million Rahm will receive, including bonuses.

The man who once refuted all LIV rumors by saying $400 million would not change his lifestyle proved he had a price after all.

Woods stands firm on deadline

Despite reports negotiations were dragging and Dec. 31 would come and go without a deal, Woods remained optimistic, right to the end.

Speaking in December from the PNC Championship in Orlando where he teamed with his son, Charlie, Tiger insisted nothing has changed when it comes to the deadline.

"As of right now, that is our time frame and our deadline," he said. "That was set forth back in early June. And that hasn't changed."

Nothing drops on New Year's Eve

Like the ball in Times Square, the PGA Tour and PIF were hoping to drop an announcement that would put an end to golf's civil war.

The year came and went and the only announcement was that the sides were prepared to continue negotiating.

PGA Tour finds major investor in SSG

The long-awaited deal between the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group was announced in late January. The SSG, a collective of marquee professional sports franchise owners headed by Fenway Sports Group, is pumping $3 billion into the tour. That included an initial investment of $1.5 billion into the launch of a commercial venture, PGA Tour Enterprises.

That makes SSG the tour's major financial partner, which had some, like Woods, now hinting maybe the tour no longer needed PIF's money.

"The monies that they have come to the table with, and what we initially had agreed to in the framework agreement, those are all the same numbers," Woods said about the SSG investment.

Tyrrell Hatton follows Rahm to LIV

LIV's strong offseason continued with the long-awaited signing of England's Tyrrell Hatton . The 16th-ranked golfer in the world joined in February, just before LIV's first event of the year, in Mexico. Hatton joined Rahm's team, confirming LIV would be adding a 13th team.

Hatton's signing came after Germany's Adrian Meronk, No. 39 in the world, joined LIV.

Monahan offers little at Players

Monahan's much-anticipated state of the game address from The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach in March lacked substance. The commissioner offered very little, other than confirming he recently met with Al-Rumayyan and talks are "accelerating."

While McIlroy continued to believe in Monahan's leadership and a deal being finalized — that later eroded, as we will see — Xander Schauffele was not so sure. "I would say in my book he's got a long way to go to gain the trust of the membership," Schauffele said.

And world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler placed the blame for golf's fractured state squarely on those who joined LIV.

"If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left," Scheffler said. "We had a tour, we were all together, and the people that left are no longer here. At the end of the day, that's where the splintering comes from."

More false hope after Bahamas meeting

Members of the PGA Tour Enterprises board, including Monahan and all six player directors — Woods, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati — met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas soon after the Players Championship.

Monahan called the meeting "constructive." Woods said. "We're headed in the right direction."

LIV players: Deal needed to save sport

LIV golfers weighed in on the negotiations from the event at Doral with Bryson DeChambeau saying there needs to be more of a sense of urgency.

"The only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense and for us to be playing all again in somewhat of the same boat," DeChambeau said. "And it needs to happen fast. It's not a two-year thing. Like it needs to happen quicker rather than later just for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest."

LIV looking to buy golf courses

Norman revealed in May that LIV Golf has thought about owning all its golf courses with each team having a home venue on which to host an event.

"And now you can build out around that," Norman told Bloomberg News. "It’s not just a golf course. You bring in education, hospitality, real estate, merchandise, management, and all these other different opportunities that the game of golf has to deliver to a community or to a region. We are going to be doing that.”

Jimmy Dunne resigns from PGA Tour policy board

Dunne, one of the architects of the framework agreement, resigned from the tour’s policy board the week of the PGA Championship. The North Palm Beach resident and president of Seminole Golf Club said since helping negotiate the agreement, "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my role is utterly superfluous."

Woods said the amount of work and dedication Dunne put into the board and into the PGA Tour has been "incredible."

McIlroy offered a grim outlook on the negotiations with Dunne no longer involved.

"I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was, you know, as low as it had been," McIlroy said. "And then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning."

One year later and still no deal

A year has passed since that stunning announcement of a framework agreement and about six months since the deadline to turn that into a final deal.

And still, nothing.

But are we getting closer? According to The New York Times, possibly. Maybe?

More: Strong list of LIV, PGA Tour golfers attempting to qualify for U.S. Open at Bear's Club

The Times recently reported that negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF not only are very much alive but term sheets have been exchanged.

But it also added a deal is far from certain with the future of LIV Golf still to be decided.

And so we wait.
