overnight trips in georgia

When in need of a break from the day-to-day grind, nothing beats a weekend getaway. Thanks to its busy airport and five major geographical regions ranging from the Blue Ridge to the coastal plains, Georgia offers a variety of escapes from quaint towns and beachside communities to historic cities. The best part? These destinations each offer their own Southern charm. Below are a few top choices for weekend getaways in Georgia.

Often described as one of the most charming places to celebrate the holidays in the South , this north Georgia mountain town is an ideal year-round destination. It was the site of the first major U.S. Gold Rush, and today its hills are better known for liquid gold—wine. Dahlonega serves as the heart of Georgia’s wine country with award-winning wineries such as Wolf Mountain Vineywards providing guests with sweeping views and tasty beverages. The surrounding Chattahoochee National Forest presents 22 hiking trails including some around Amicalola Falls where a waterfall plunges 729-feet.

Escape to Germany without ever leaving Georgia in the state’s own Alpine Village. The Bavarian-inspired community rests in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains making it an ideal spot for a cool escape. Beyond quaint German buildings, you’ll find loads of shopping and plenty of outdoor activities. Unicoi State Park is immediately northeast of Helen. There, find 12 miles of trails to be trekked, or head to Anna Ruby Falls for an awesome view of cascading water. This area is also well-known for its wine region. Book a tour with VIP Southern Tours to visit several vineyards in one day before resting at Valhalla Resort . As you head home, stop for a souvenir from Nora Mill Granary , a 1876 grist mill which still uses the original 1,500-pound French Burr Mill Stones powered by the Chattahoochee River to create grits, flour, and more.

There’s more to the home of the University of Georgia than meets the eye. It’s a funky town with a strong energy. Composed of several small neighborhoods like Five Points, Normaltown, and Boulevard, Athens maintains a small-town charm despite its population of nearly 130,000. Don’t underestimate a tour of the university’s grounds which includes landmarks like the Arch and the Chapel on North Campus. From there, grab a bite at one of the town’s several chef-driven restaurants such as Puma Yu’s for small plate Thai food by Chef Pete Amadhanirundr or Mimi Maumus’s Home.Made for sandwiches before enjoying live music at the iconic Georgia Theatre. Rest your head at AthBnB , a boutique bed and breakfast in the heart of the Five Points neighborhood, and don’t skip a little shopping at Agora Vintage . Here, Airee Edwards curates a coveted collection of designer handbags, clothing, and accessories.

It comes as no surprise that Georgia’s capital city is among our top suggestions for a weekend getaway. On any given weekend, you can find festivals, concerts, sporting events, and more all within a few miles of each other. Add that to historic sites such as The King Center and museums like The National Center for Civil and Human Rights , and it’s the perfect destination. Other attractions include the High Museum of Art , Atlanta Botanical Garden , College Football Hall of Fame , Georgia Aquarium , and the World of Coca-Cola . There are ample accommodations for any budget or neighborhood preference, and both the shopping and dining scenes are unmatched. Getaway Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

A thorough comparison and review of each destination is key to choosing the best getaway for you.

Part of that process is evaluating their pros and cons and deciding depending on your preferences.

You’ll get snug and cozy in the beautiful lodges and villas at Callaway Resort & Gardens.

However, its off-the-path location is a huge factor to consider.

Experience a mountain getaway at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa with its beautiful mountain location and horseback riding.

The dated rooms, however, may dampen the mood for a getaway vacation.

Indulge in Barnsley Resort’s luxurious amenities and majestic ruins and gardens.

But depending on your taste, the food may leave much to be desired.

The Château Élan Winery & Resort is another luxurious option that you might want to consider.

How I Picked The Destinations

I’ve personally been to each destination on different occasions during my trips to Georgia.

Aside from my experience, I also considered insights from fellow guests I’ve met at each resort and reviews from trusted sites.

My goal is to provide an accurate, well-formed review that will help you plan a smooth weekend getaway in Georgia.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

best weekend getaways in georgia travel photo

Each of the best weekend getaways in Georgia offers a unique atmosphere, amenities, and accommodations.

I enjoyed my first horseback riding experience at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa.

As it was a solo trip, I made sure not to miss a little spa pampering session at their luxury spa after.

My family enjoyed the outdoor activities at Barnsley Resort, especially archery and axe throwing.

We also did canoeing and kayaking in the resort’s 10-acre lake.

I vividly remember Château Élan Winery & Resort’s lovely atmosphere during my husband, and I’s quick romantic escape there.

But being close to nature at Callaway Resort & Gardens was the most memorable getaway.

My family stayed at the cottage and had the coziest family bonding time.

I loved how close it is to Robin Lake Beach and the walking trails.

Located five hours from Atlanta are the Golden Isles of Georgia. They sit on the Atlantic coast and these islands never cease to amaze incoming tourists. St. Simons Island residents tease about closing the only bridge to the island — they know how good they have it.

The island, which is the size of Manhattan, is known for its majestic oak trees, historic landmarks that date back to colonial times and quiet beaches. If you look closely at those oak trees, you may find them looking back at you. In the 1980’s, artist Keith Jennings decided to make his mark on St. Simons Island, carving 20 faces from the island’s famous oak trees. Tourists love to go on a scavenger hunt to find them all.

Grab your hiking gear, mountain bike, and kayak for your next trip to Albany, Georgia. This unexpected destination offers a plethora of outdoor activities and keeps museum aficionados mind. It’s located in the southwest part of the state and should be on your radar for weekend getaways in Georgia.

You can kayak down the Flint River and explore some of the caves and waterfalls in the area. The ever-fabulous Chehaw Park has an amazing AZA-accredited zoo, but also a BMX dirt course, disc golf course and over 10 miles of mountain bike trails.

Care to learn something? The Albany Civil Rights Institute is a must-do museum and a great educational stop for families.

Athens: georgia bulldog country.

Home of the University of Georgia, this small town is full of college spirit. Yet, you don’t have to be a college football fan to appreciate Athens. You can tour the historic university campus, tour the local breweries, shop the boutiques downtown and nosh at one of the swanky chef-owned restaurants that are popping up.

Don’t miss Bear Hollow Zoo on your Athens visit. It’s home to rescue animals that are native to Georgia. You can take a self-guided tour and hike the trails. It’s perfect for visitors of all ages and a hidden gem of the city.

Augusta: a golfer's paradise.

As one of the stops on the PGA tour, Augusta has become a destination for golfers because of the Masters. Both public and semi-private courses surround Augusta’s river region. Spring is the perfect time to visit Augusta, whether or not you play, because the Azaleas are blooming.

Don’t let the traditional Southern side of Augusta fool you; they’ve got plenty of funk to offer as well. The Morris Museum of Art is home to contemporary folk art and a must-do for art enthusiasts. You can even take a class while visiting the museum and dabble in your own artwork.

Atlanta: the jewel of the south.

Even though I’ve lived in Atlanta for over a decade, it doesn’t stop me from playing tourist in my hometown. Each region of Atlanta has something different to offer: Buckhead, Downtown and Midtown.

My primary date-night destination has become Buckhead — a fantastic neighborhood for shopping and dining. If you’re looking for the creative side of town, Midtown is the hot spot for performing arts. Don’t miss the headlining performances at The Fox Theatre or take the kids to a fun puppet show at Center for Puppetry Arts. Downtown Atlanta is also home to the Georgia Aquarium, which is the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere.

One last tip: Skip the traffic and use public transportation. Purchase a MARTA pass to explore Atlanta with ease.

Greensboro: the lake oconee retreat.

Nestled amongst the pine trees is Georgia’s serene Lake Oconee. Watersports are popular amongst visitors from late Spring to early Fall. My family loves kayaking, swimming in the lake and biking around the shores. Renting a boat is another popular activity for tourists.

When you’ve built up an appetite from a day on the water, head to one of my favorite spots: Filet Steak and Seafood. It’s a modern steakhouse with traditional cuts. Be sure to save room for their Creamy Coconut Layer Cake.

Savannah: the enchanting riverfront city.

From emerging local artists to soul food at its finest, there’s so much to do in Savannah. I love touring the city by foot and checking out the architecture. The historic buildings are still standing in their glory and several iconic churches are open to the public for tours.

South of Atlanta is the golf path-covered city of Peachtree City. What I mean by that is, you can get anywhere you want in Peachtree City on a golf cart.

You may recognize the name of the city from the bottom of movie credits. That’s because the city is the fastest growing production location for the film industry.

To see what they’ve been making, sign up for the Southern Hollywood Film Tour and see where some of your favorite movies were filmed. Have your camera ready and bring your walking shoes.

Braselton might be the most surprising addition to this list, located off of I-85N just a few hours from Atlanta. The city is home to Road Atlanta and hosts weekly racing events. Car enthusiasts come together yearly for the Formula 1-style race at Road Atlanta — the Motul Petit Le Mans. Fans can watch high-end sportscars test their limits.

The more relaxing side of Braselton includes touring the Château Élan winery. Public tours are offered daily and guests can purchase a wine flight for tasting. It’s one of the most romantic Georgia destinations.

Like many Georgia cities, there’s plenty of rich history that spans the many years of Adairsville’s existence. The Adairsville Rail Depot is where visitors can discover how the city was a key role in the Great Locomotive Chase. Kids that love trains can appreciate all there is to offer.

Man shocked by $143,000 phone bill from overseas trip

A Florida man got the shock of his life by looking at his cellphone bill after a trip to Europe.

(Gray News) - When it comes to your phone plan, it helps to read the fine print. A Florida man learned that the hard way after he incurred a fortune in roaming charges during a trip to Europe.

Rene Remund told WFTS he was charged $143,269 for using 9.5 gigabytes of roaming data during a three-week trip to Switzerland.

He said he’s been a T-Mobile customer for more than 30 years and said he had been assured beforehand at a T-Mobile store that he would be “covered” while overseas.

At first, Remund said his eyes deceived him, as he thought the bill was for $143.

He said he got in touch with a representative, who assured him the bill was correct. At that point, he turned to legal help.

T-Mobile ended up crediting him for the account.

The Federal Communications Commission encourages people to know the details of their cellular plan coverage before they go on international trips, including whether your mobile phone will work there, what the roaming rates are and how to track your usage.

T-Mobile similarly encouraged its customers to check the details of their plans before setting out, as some older plans don’t include international roaming.

“If you’re not on a Go5G, Magenta, ONE Plan, Essentials, or a Simple Choice plan and you’ll be traveling outside the U.S., you can add World Class International Roaming to each line,” T-Mobile said on its webpage devoted to explaining its international roaming services . Customers can do this by managing their plan .

Other options include blocking international data and having a prepaid plan while overseas.
