Double buns always put me into a fun spirit. And to make the cornrows into low double buns is what gives me the energy to travel with a cheery spirit.  

In my experience, using natural hair for starters and synthetic hair for your buns create a thicker-looking beautiful hairstyle. The chic feminine vibe of this hairstyle is what will make my clients appear as super sassy fashion queens.  

I usually do this hairstyle in the summer as they help keep your hair up high in a fun way. But you can incorporate this hairdo all year round as well.

This adorable and elegant dutch braided ponytail is an all-time favorite for a quick neat-up! There was this one time when I had only one rubber band with me but I almost teared up at the thought of a plain ponytail or a boring braid.

So, I did this simple mix-up and it came out so well that I could not stop taking my side photos just like the image you see here! Just two Dutch braids meeting at the back in a pony. Save your day with this casual yet elegant look with just a single tie! 

This braid style screams campervan slash hiking tours! This is super easy and fun to wear. I used to wear them all the time when I had fringes at the front and I swear they would lift up my spirits that day!

All you have to do is to part your hair from the front to the back and then from one ear to another crossing the crown. Now, it is time to braid them up however you want. And that’s how easy it is to have boosted energy all day long!

My client absolutely loved this one and showed me her photos of slaying this hairstyle on her trips! A sleek, nicely sectioned cornrows meet at the top for a ponytail with loose ends. 

Now, this one looks a little less protective, but I assure you that you are free to tuck in your real hair under the cover of extensions. The curled extensions are easy to wear and remove. 

Simply clip it on your crown when you go out, and the rest of your hair will stay protected. Try out this luscious curled ponytail on your next tour!

This one is a go-to for me whenever I need to make a trip with greasy hair! Rather than a plain messy bun, I play with it a little and make a French braid in a C-shape on the top of my head. Then put it into a messy bun on the crown and loosen up some parts to create volume and messiness.

Super easy to do, but it certainly spices up my regular braids or regular messy buns. It protects my hair a little better on trips as well! In urgent scenarios, don’t shy out from trying this!

One of my friends once asked me for a travel braid where stray hairs will not bother her in any way. That without using any extra setting product at all!

No matter if you’re a natural-hair traveler or have silky smooth locks, you don’t want to fuss over your hair while traveling. In fact, you don’t want to spend a single moment on anything that can take away from your enjoyment of your much needed vacation. Having to fix your hair each day is time consuming and can feel like a chore. And stepping out with a bird’s nest on your head just isn’t an option.

That’s why travel braids are the best recourse. They look good and they last a long time. Not to mention braids allow your hair to grow. It’s an all around win! In this article, we’ll present some of our top choices for Travel Braids in 2022.

The Single Braid

This is pretty self-explanatory. Among the travel braids, the single braid is by far the easiest to achieve, you don’t need to pay a stylist to do it. You can certainly do it yourself. If you’re able and your hair is long enough, you’ll also be able to to take your single braid and style it into the halo or ‘milkmaid’ look.

French / Dutch Braids

French or Dutch braids are another great option for travel braids. However, they take a bit of finesse to achieve and may take tons of practice before getting them right. The easiest route to take would be to simply have a hair stylist do it for you. If you’re not a huge fan of traveling around with braids because you’re not crazy about the look of them, then you’ll love crochet braids. The braids themselves aren’t actually seen. Hair extensions are attached to the braids, covering them up and giving you just about any hair style you want to have. This is something that you can learn by watching a tutorial on YouTube but because this braiding technique is so time consuming, you may want to consider having a hair stylist do it. 99 problems, don’t let hair be one!

Traveling is stressful when you think about packing the right number of outfits, for every possible scenario, and the shoes to go with. Plus, having the right combination of clothes (many of which never escape the luggage), along with planning activities too.

When traveling, my hairstyle is not on my list of things to worry about. My focus on healthy hair, seamless hair, and styles that compliment me in any given situation and saves time is key.

Natural hair has been good to me. I’m so carefree. Sweating my hair out, dipping in the ocean, or hiking in the rainforest don’t bother me!

Here are a few of my favorite travel hairstyles to maintain healthy hair while traveling:

1. pipe cleaners with natural hair + locs.

Oh the things you can do with pipe cleaners! The flexible wires/rods are available in assorted shapes, sizes, and colors. Find them wherever arts & crafts or office supplies are sold. I love pipe cleaners with my natural hair. They offer versatility as you see in my travel hairstyle above. With my dreadlocks in pipe cleaners I’m able to achieve a shorter hairstyle. My hair is away from my face and protected from elements. This style quickly lets down for nights out on the town. Yes, I can wash my hair and swim with pipe cleaners. I always follow any dips in the ocean with a good wash, leave-in conditioner, and oils.

2. Flat twists

Flat twists with a bun or pony tail helped me travel with ease in Bali . When traveling in hot climates, I like to keep my hair up and out of my face. The flat twists offer a different look and stays secure in place. Bring on the adventures!

3. Twists and messy bun

Beaching in Turks and Caicos with my hair in a twisted high bun. This hairstyle seamlessly lets down and maintains a curled/wavy pattern offering an alternative hairstyle fresh out the water.

4. Locs and curls

When on the sand and out of the water, I love to rock a head full of curls. Talking about bouncing and behaving! These tight curls stay in place until taken out.

5. Twisted and pulled up

Elegant and functional hairstyle incorporates flat twists in a high bun.

6. Braided pin-up

Braids or plats worn up or down are super adaptable. Since I’m always hot, I like my hair out of my face in tropical climates. My floppy hat easily slips over my locs. I’m ready to hit the town.

7. On the side

Not sure what it is about wearing my hair to the side but I love it too! Can easily accomplish a messy bun, pony tail, or pin-up.

8. Bonus: Pipe cleaners with natural hair + locs

So, these are a few of my favorite travel hairstyles for natural hair and locs. With every style, I can swim and go about my travels without worrying about my hair. These styles are also great on the plane.

My hair essentials: Jojoba, castor, and tea tree oils are my favorite to maintain moisture and balance when traveling. I usually don’t leave home without my pipe cleaners.

Here, Gabby Union showcases the versatility of tiny box braids. The Y2K movie darling looks incredible in this '90s staple, the  half-up, half-down hairstyle .

I’m completely useless when it comes to even giving myself a simple braid, so what did I do? I took the plunge and cut off my long hair into a pixie cut. Less fuss when getting ready, easier to clean, and I use less precious shampoo from those tiny 3 oz bottles.

I was so excited about the sock-bun tutorial, especially!! I have always wondered how those girls pulled off such perfect buns! Im a big fan of head wraps too although it gets waaayy too hot for them in the summer time! I bike and snowboard a lot and I loathe helmet hair so I do a lot of french side braids and twists. And im heading off to South America for 6 months soon so these tips will def come in handy!

I’m always rocking a french braid when I travel. It keeps everything out of my face and looks cute. Practice at home before you go and soon enough, you’ll be so quick with your fingers, you’ll be able to french up your hair on the top bunk of a sleeper train. Its not easy, but can be done!

Be it beads, patterns that swoop and swirl around the crown, technicolor ombré hues, or braid styles adorned with thread, cuffs, and butterflies, the options are endless, which can be a bit daunting if you're trying to decide on a look. Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s recent  goddess braids have yielded some of her best looks yet. This look, which she wore on  The Kelly Clarkson Show , is another example of this. It gathers the box braids with curls into a classic ponytail — one with gorgeous texture and body.

Lori Harvey is not immune to the allure of  Y2K aesthetic . The proof: These wide-parted baby braids.  Box braid hairstyles come in a variety of sizes and lengths and Harvey makes a strong case for a shorter iteration of the look. This hairstyle is equal parts cute and easy to create — and the nostalgic element is just the cherry on top.

Danai Gurira attended the 2022 EBONY Power 100 Awards in a pinwheel-inspired hairstyle made up of small braids all wrapped around each other in circular patterns. This look is reminiscent of '90s finger waves and 1920s flapper waves, proving that you really can achieve any  hairstyle with braids .

Braided Hot Air Balloon

Janet Jackson’s hair (literally) reached new heights with this epic top knot that features a braided cornrow base. There’s so much to love about this look, including the subtle braids in the front, the big poofy bun, and the gold wire embellishment.

Leave it to  Gabrielle Union to pull off one of the most intricate braided hairstyles of 2022. This  circular masterpiece , done by Hairstylist Issac Poleon, is a testament to how versatile braids can be. We can only imagine how much hairspray and how many bobby pins went into this look, but Union carries this crown of braided wheels with unmatched elegance.

Twist & Turn

This braided updo may just be Martin’s most standout look yet. The gingerbread shade is *chef’s kiss,* the  intricate twisted braid is flawless, and the spiky ends add just the right amount of edge.

Ebonee Davis is a reliable source for natural hair inspiration, and oh, look, here she is again with another hairstyle we'd like to copy. The model/activist stepped out on the red carpet with a set of gorgeous Afro puffs, boasting a base of tiny cornrows braided in three directions.

Golden Girls

A few of the models on the runway at Pyer Moss's Spring 2020 show wore sets of beautiful cornrow braids adorned with gold cuffs forged in the image of Black female music artists. The gilded likenesses of Missy Elliot, Grace Jones, Rihanna, Lauryn Hill, and more graced their plaits, a beautiful tribute to the contribution of Black women to pop culture worldwide. 

Braids on Braids

Anyone who has gotten box braids has likely woven those smaller braids into a set of larger ones, and actor Yvonne Orji is no exception. In 2019, she attended the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards with her blonde box braids styled into a crown braid that transforms into a braided ponytail.

Neat and Tidy

Keke Palmer's braids start as cornrows in the front, then cascade down her back to flow freely. A little bit of edge control at the hairline and she was ready to hit the red carpet.

Waves on Swim

You know if Beyoncé's going to serve a protective style, it's going to be epic. For the premiere of The Lion King in 2019, her hair was braided in a curvy pattern reminiscent of finger waves. It was a beautiful marriage between two hairstyles so important to Black culture.

Yes, the Bayang

To close out her video for " Hit Different " in September, SZA gave fans a little teaser of her single, " Good Days ." For the segment, she wore a set of beaded braids, complete with a gorgeous fringe, which was also adorned with wooden flourishes.

Safety First

Dancehall artist Shenseea wore this mile-long braid decorated with a crap-ton of safety pins for her " Trick'a Treat " music video.  Her look is a great example of how you can transform a simple high pony with the right accessories. If you've got a bunch of safety pins in a junk drawer somewhere, now you've got a use for them.

Tessa Thompson's super long BDSM-inspired braid was one of our favorite hair looks from the 2019 Met Gala, "Notes on Camp." The style comes courtesy of Lacy Redway , who left a little tassel at the end of the 12-foot long latex braid so it could resemble a whip.

You don't have to do the most to get super gorgeous hair. A simple braided bun is always a good look, as Issa Rae demonstrates here. Here, the base of her hair is kept sleek and the braided bit is just a few shades lighter than her base, hinting at a cool ombré.

Finger Waves and Length for Days

Tracee Ellis Ross got all gussied up to for the 2020 People's Choice Awards. For the occasion, her hair was styled by Nai'vasha Johnson in a long, textured ponytail with a finger-wave design at the base. 

Mumbo Jumbo

Let the beautiful Victoria Monet provide you with a little inspo for your next jumbo box braid sesh. The singer/songwriter's dark brown, almost-black braids are brightened up with some strands of blonde, adding dimension to her look. 

Child's Play

Saweetie never fails to serve us hairstyles that make us press the "save" button on Instagram. These box braids she's wearing are decorated with clear beads at the ends. This kind of look reminds something we wore as kids in the '90s, except the way she's wearing hers in the 2020s is all grown up.

A high, side ponytail will always remind us of the '80s, but we're loving the modern twist Yara Shahidi 's hairstylist put on the look. Instead of styling her pony with a single braid, the actor's got at least four, all tied off at the ends with a little black rubber band.

Bantu, Three, Four, Five

Brandy Norwood hit the stage at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards with her long, blonde box braids styled into at least five Bantu knots. It's a friendly reminder of the versatility of protective styles , and another great option to choose from if you already have box braids in.

Meet Me in the Lob-by

Kiki Layne demonstrates a super-cute way to style lob-length box braids. Her stylist pulled one side of her hair back behind her ears, wrapping the braids in what appears to be silver elastic. 

Sultry Straight Backs

There is no hairstyle more classic than a good set of straight-back cornrows. While this could be considered one of the more basic cornrow styles, it's easy to elevate the look to make it more special. For the 2020 American Music Awards, Ciara wore hers with a swooping, swirling set of baby hairs.

'90s Baby

Jordyn Woods fêted Justin Roberts's New Music Video 'Way Too Much' with a set of box braids that were left loose and wavy at the ends. Offering proof that scrunchies are making a big comeback, the model used a satiny-looking animal-print version to hold her braids in a half-up, half-down look.

Twice Crowned

Stylist Vernon François took the concept of a braid crown to the next level with an actual crown. A few days after Amandla Stenberg debuted long, thick braids with red highlights and a thinner braid split along her hairline, François reinvented the look by pinning it up and topping it off with a starry tiara.

Fully Fulani

Taraji P. Henson decided on a gorgeous set of Fulani braids to promote Empire in South Africa. There's so much gorgeousness going on here, it's hard to choose a favorite element. The braid precisely laid down her middle part? The plaits left loose at the temples? Or the big bun of swirling, highlighted braids sitting high atop Henson's head? One thing is for sure: It all comes together for an absolutely epic look.

Feed the Pony

Skai Jackson's look comes courtesy of L.A.-based hairstylist LaShondra , who styled the actor's hair in feed-in braids of varying sizes, pulled up into a ponytail. And, of course, the baby hair is slicked to perfection.

Hoop Dreams

Prepare to be obsessed with this look Janelle Monáe wore for a Today set at Rockefeller Plaza: a thick braid with a black-to-silvery-white ombré. Hairstylist Nikki Nelms finished off the look with a golden ring that cleanly seals the tapered end.

Laurel Harrier wore box braids to the L.A. premiere of BlacKkKlansman for a special reason, according to her hairstylist Lacy Redway . "Most of us remember iconic moments from the '90s of seeing Janet Jackson with box braids in Poetic Justice or Brandy in Moesha ," she captioned an image of Harrier's look. "But how many of you guys know that braids can be traced back more than 5,000 years ago to about 3500 B.C. ?" In her post, Redway lays out a brief history of braids before mentioning that Harrier chose the look to "celebrate the history and culture of box braids." Harrier's braids, which boast slightly wavy, loose ends, were styled into a half-up, half-down look, complete with subtle, slicked-down baby hairs .

Down-to-There Platinum Hair

Many an attendee wore this hairstyle at 2018 Essence Fest but, Mary J. Blige brought it from the New Orleans streets to the stage for her performance at the festival. Blige chose long box braids that reach her thigh — in her signature blonde hue, of course.

Hairstylist Christina "Tina" Trammell gave multi-hyphenate Erica Ash a gorgeous set of Fulani braids that looked beautiful paired with her head-turning gown. Trammel also added wooden beads at the ends of Ash's braids, tying the whole look together.

Knot Your Average Pony

This next-level look on the lovely Amandla Stenberg comes courtesy of hair legend Vernon François . François created this multicolor, knotted plait, "because why knot," as he captioned an image of the look on his Instagram page.

Cinnamon Bun Braids

Hairstylist Sheridan Ward gave Thandie Newton this hairstyle for a panel at Cannes Lions. Her cornrows were braided back in a slightly swoopy pattern, brought together at the nape of her neck into a low bun that is making us hungry for Cinnabon.

Flower Power

For the cover of Allure 's June 2017 issue , Zöe Kravitz's signature micro braids (this time in platinum blonde) were accessorized with charming faux flowers and butterflies, courtesy of Nikki Nelms. The result? An ethereal, mystical style.

Pop the Bubbly

Popular natural hair influencer Nneoma is the queen of finessing her protective styles in unique ways. Here, she used one of our favorite accessories from childhood — hair bubbles — and wrapped them around the base and ends of each box braid for a playful look that's simple to replicate on your own.

Unicorn Rave

Known for her colorful style, Brazilian blogger Magá Moura looks like she came straight out of the '90s with her face stickers and unicorn braids adorned with pastel beads on the ends. Here, she styled them in high pigtails, leaving some braids out in the front to frame her face.

Braid in, Braid-Out

Insecure creator and actress Issa Rae stunned on the red carpet at the 2017 NAACP Image Awards rocking this half-up, half-down look with a cornrowed topknot and two hanging braids on the side. The rest of her hair was left loose in a braid-out pattern at the back. Consider trying the style out on those days when you want lots of volume but also want to keep your hair out of your face.

Alicia Keys has been serving us gorgeous braided hairstyles since she burst onto the scene in 2001 with "Fallin'", and she's still in the business of selflessly providing the girls with hair inspo. During her tenure as a judge on The Voice , she wore cornrows that fed into a larger braid with a voluminous bouffant

Mix & Match Plaits

When is Solange Knowles not giving us serious hairspiration? After going blonde in September 2017, she later stepped out with this set of braids by Susy Oludele, aka @hairbysusy , we were, as the kids say, shook. We love the mix-and-match feel of these braids, adorned with beads and white thread.

Kandy Kornrows

Not everyone likes the taste of candy corn, but the look of these orange-and-yellow ombré jumbo braids is making me want to eat a bowl full of them. The braids, done by YouTuber Kersti Pitre , are what she likes to call Kandy Cornrows. We think the name fits perfectly.

No-Fuss Muss

Kerry Washington's straight-back cornrows, which she wore to shoot Allure 's November 2017 issue , were given an easy, earthy vibe with loose edges and a few well-placed cuffs. Here, hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew shows us you don't need edge control to serve a polished, braided moment.

Beaded Babe

Just so you know, we're still gathering our collective edges from when we saw this hairstyle on Survivor’s Remorse actress Teyonah Parris. Parris took her Fulani braids to beaded glory with this look. 

Electric Lady

If Beyoncé lets you do her hair, you know you've got the magic touch. @hairbysusy consistently floods our Instafeeds with major hair porn, and this electric, acid-yellow set of box braids adorned with colorful beads is no exception.

In the Loop

Duh, braids are awesome, but sometimes you want to rock them and your loose natural hair. Tamara, owner of Ancestral Strands hair salon in Brooklyn, created this look on one of her models for CurlFest 2017. The best part? The braided loop in the middle, which gives this style a unique flourish.

Purple Unicorn

Songbird Justine Skye has the voice of an angel, and also, great hairstyles. All the time. The self-proclaimed "Purple Unicorn" made a bold statement with this braided ponytail by master braider @guin_gui . There’s some legit whip-ability with this braid… and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Gettin' Ziggy With It

Speaking of purple, model/dancer Damaris Lewis was a muse to the late great Prince . They shared the stage and the sensibility to be fly and fierce, which is what this look by Felicia Burrows is. We especially like the zigzag part in between the braids; it’s a nice touch. Reminder: Screenshot this and bring to the salon.

Orange Soda

Pumpkins ain't got nothing on this adorable orange bob. We love these bright box braids on Lindiwe Dim , snipped short and secured with yellow, peach, and pink elastics.

Jourdan Dunn wore a set of feed-in braids by Lacy Redway to the 2015 Met Gala and, of course, absolutely nailed the look.

St. Kitts–based hairstylist Jalicia created this gorgeous updo, which she punctuated with a bit of colorful thread in the front. While we're sure the braids she twisted into a giant bun look great when they are hanging loose, we're obsessed with the drama this swirly updo is serving.

This set of braids is giving us '90s, Ethiopian, and Fulani vibes all at once. We love the way they're styled here with two space buns in the front and hanging braids in the back. The accessories just take the look to the next level.

Totally Twisted

Lupita Nyong'o is the real MVP when it comes to style and beauty. In the summer of 2017 , she rocked this protective style — a lob made of tiny Senegalese twists, courtesy of Lacy Redway. Granted, they're not braids but the effect this look gives is similar.

Shaved Sides

This blonde style, anchored by a set of cornrows done at The Braid Lounge in Virginia Beach, is the stuff dreams are made of. The client's shaved sides give this style an edgy feel. 

Throwback Slay

An indisputable fact about Nina Simone is that her musicianship and her style can never be duplicated. She proudly wore her natural hair for many years and often tapped into her roots to inspire her hairdos. Here she is with a simple-yet-elegant braided bun. She may be gone, but her proclivity to turn hair into art still influences many today.

The 14 Different Types of Braids and How to Create Them, According to Stylists

Braids are something of a workhorse in the world of hairstyles: they're all at once classic and trendy—and protective, to boot. That being said, there are so many types and styles of braids, it can be difficult to settle on just one kind.

To help manage the overwhelm, we've gathered 14 of the most popular braided hairstyles and supplemented them with celeb photos so you can see what each style looks like, IRL. We also consulted with top celebrity hairstylists and a trichologist to compile tips, tricks, and tutorials for each braid.

Box braids are created by securing the hair extension around the base of the natural hair and creating a box-like knot attachment at the root. They were especially popular in the '90s, which gives them a cool-girl vibe when worn today. "Box braids serve as a protective style on textured hair," Lacy Redway, Unilever Global Stylist, TRESemmé Future Stylists Fund Selection Committee Member, and celebrity hairstylist, adds. "It allows you to have your hair protected for a period of time while still being able to style it in various hairstyles using the box braids as the foundation of the hairstyles."

Knotless Braids

Knotless braids have gained popularity for being a more lightweight, natural-looking alternative to box braids. Unlike traditional box braids, this style doesn't have the traditional knot at the top of each braid. Instead, it is achieved by feeding in the hair mid-braid. "The benefit of the knotless technique (when done properly) is it prevents traction alopecia, which is a common form of hair loss for women who have braids that are installed too tight with the large knots," says trichologist, Kari Williams. "This technique can take longer to install, but it's worth the health of the hair and scalp."

Micro Braids

Micro braids are just like box braids in that they can be created using the same technique. They're just—you guessed it—smaller. The modern-day poster child for micro braids (in our humble opinion) is Zoë Kravitz. She has walked many a red carpet donning the very same chic style, albeit with a couple of hair color switch-ups along the way. "They are designed to be versatile, which is the beauty of them," Redway says. "You can style as you please."

Cornrow Braids

As you can see from Yara Shahidi, actress and activist extraordinaire, cornrows are braids that form narrow parallel strips down the head. They're normally positioned from front to back, but she put a unique twist on a classic look by wearing hers pulled back with a wired braid construction artfully crafted around it.

Crown Braid

Next, we have the crown braid , which looks complex and time-consuming but happens to be exactly the opposite. Our favorite way to create a crown braid is to start with a traditional side braid before wrapping it up and over the top of the forehead, securing it with bobby pins along the way. We always make sure to leave out a couple of face-framing pieces à la Vanessa Hudgens.

Fishtail Braid

A fishtail braid is one of our all-time favorite styles as it's playful and unexpected. It's easy to distinguish from other braids since it looks like a mirror reflection of itself. Storm Reid shows us how it's done by styling her box braid, fishtail braid off to one side.

French Braid

A French braid , as demonstrated by Emily Blunt, is a traditional three-piece braid. As you plait the hair together, add a section from either side on each rotation. It's one of the most versatile and chic of braids, which is why we see it so often at red carpet events. Style it in the traditional way, as a single-braided strand running down the nape of the neck, or do as Blunt does and position it to the side for an elegant updo.

With practice, it's an easy style to create. If you need a little refresher, head to YouTube for pointers (no judgment—braiding takes a lot of time and patience).

Dutch Braid

A Dutch braid , on the other hand, is created in the same exact way as you would a French braid—except inverted. Instead of winding the hair over itself as you plait, you wind it underneath the other strands. This small change makes a big difference. You see, instead of the braid flowing inward, it flows outward, which makes the braid pop out slightly. Take Rita Ora's hair, for example. Here, she wears it in Dutch-braided pigtails. Just compare her braids to Emily Blunt's French-braided style, and you'll see that Ora's braids are much more defined and visible.

In essence, think of a Dutch braid like a bolder version of a French braid. All it requires is that you reverse the French braid technique. 

A Dutch braid may sound easy in theory, but it can be extremely difficult for a braid novice, which is why we've created a step-by-step tutorial  with celebrity hairstylist Anh Co Tran to make it easy for you to replicate Ora's exact style.

Milkmaid Braid

The milkmaid braid is almost identical to the aforementioned crown braid, but instead of being situated on the top of the forehead (where an actual crown would sit), it's pushed back a couple of inches to rest more toward the middle of the head. It's also more likely to begin with a center part, as opposed to a side part, for a more traditional look. To create, "Divide your hair by the nape of your neck in two sections," says Redway. "Braid each section into two braids before crisscrossing them onto themselves and securing them with hair and bobby pins." We think it's best demonstrated by Sarah Hyland at the Fox Golden Globes party. (By the way, if you've already mastered this style, try a reverse milkmaid braid  for a new take.)

Waterfall Braid

Waterfall braids look intricate, but luckily, they aren't as complicated as they seem. Think of them like a French braid, but one side of the braid is woven and the opposite part cascades down into the hair. To create a waterfall braid, pretend you are beginning a French braid. Section the hair into three pieces, cross the top section over the middle, and, instead of grabbing more hair, let this section hang down. Cross the remaining pieces over one another, then grab a new piece from the top and incorporate it into the braid. Repeat the steps.

3 Strand Braid

This braiding technique is the foundation for the rest of the looks on this list. Without it, the rest of these braids are not possible. To try for yourself, section hair into three strands. Take the left piece and cross it over the middle, making it the new middle. Then, take the right-most piece and cross it over the middle, making it the new middle. Repeat this process over and over until you reach the end of your strands.

Shay Mitchell demonstrates one of the many ways you can wear this style. Appropriate for any hair type, the three-strand braid can be tightly kept or intentionally loosened to show volume and body.

Rope Braids

"The trick with this hairstyle is that it doubles as a second hairstyle," Redway says. "When the hairstyle starts to frizz up, release them and wear your hair down because you will now have beautiful water waves ." Unlike many of the other styles on this list, the rope braid only requires two sections of hair. Take one of the sections and twist the hair until the entire section is spiraled. Secure with a clear elastic. Repeat on the other side. Take each section and twist them around one another. Secure at the bottom.

Pigtail Braids

Pigtail braids couldn't be easier, and require pulling the hair into two low ponytails before braiding the ends of each. You can then fasten with an elastic and go. The look recalls a childhood style but can easily be made sophisticated, by smoothing flyaways with a flexible-hold gel.

The halo braid is similar to a crown braid, and consists of long Dutch braids placed around the head and fastened on top, to mimic a halo. Remove a few tendrils to frame the face and keep the look more casual.

The classic three-strand braid is the foundation for all braided styles. Without knowing that technique, you cannot master more complicated styles.

The most popular braid largely depends on what you are exposed to. Dorsey says his most popular request from clients is for a knotless box braid. "I have been feeding in human hair to the braid to create length and body," Dorsey says. "Sort of like a Lisa Bonet vibe."

"All braids have some type of longevity," Dorsey says. "Knotless braids, knot braids, cornrows, box braids, and senegalese twists are long-lasting protective styles and are meant to last in the hair."

Prince William Joins World Leaders at the 80th Anniversary of D-Day Ceremony

The Prince of Wales attended the Omaha Beach event alongside President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and more.

Other royals in attendance at the the international commemorative ceremony in Saint Laurent sur Mer included King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Frederik X of Denmark, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Many heads of state were also at the ceremony, including President Joe Biden, France's President Macron, and Ukraine's President Zelensky. Plus, around 200 veterans—mostly from the U.S., Britain, Canada, and France–were also present for the ceremony; the majority of these men are over 100 years old.
