17 Jaunty Travel Braids To Wear On Your Next Trip!

Travel braids are just as much as their names tell you – braids for your travel! If you already did not know, traveling can be particularly stressful for your hair even if it is therapeutic.

All the dirt, sweat, and exposure to different environments can damage your hair and ruin its health. The more you wear your hair down, the more of your hair stays open to pollution and you will find them looking dull and lifeless within hours!

For this reason, I suggest my clients go for protective hairstyles when they mention going on travels. And on the top of the list are braids!

If you already did not know, braids make your life easier, especially when you travel. Braids protect your hair from all sorts of pollution and make it easy to manage your hair simultaneously!

Braids have so many possibilities and options that you might get confused which ones to pick for your trips. But keep in mind that you might not always be able to pull off the hairstyle you want on your travels.

Some braids need some extra preparation, while others are very handy for on-the-go situations. That is why I have picked the most popular and casually fashionable travel braids for you to choose from!

If you are planning a trip in the near future, and want a super photogenic hairstyle for your travelgram shots, then go braids, girl!

Short Sleek Cornrow Bun

In my opinion, these sleek buns ooze elegance. However, to bring that elegance to a higher level you have to turn your cornrows into a bun. With super low maintenance and sleek sophistication, this hairstyle provides peak beauty.

I do this hairstyle for my clients especially before they travel to a faraway place that involves a lot of physical activities like trekking or hiking, etc. And they always thanked me for choosing this stunning low-maintenance hairdo.

It’s a protective hairstyle. Hence it is supposed to provide the same sleekness for a long time. But sometimes, the hair can get frizzy. So, I usually use a lot of mousse, leave-in conditioner, and frizz-free shampoo before creating this hairstyle to prevent frizziness.

And I always recommend my clients use satin or silk pillowcases before sleeping. I swear it works like magic.

Designed Box Braids

I fell in love with this hairstyle at first sight. Unfortunately, as I am not yet an expert in designing box braids, I haven’t tried it out on anyone.

I assure you your hairstyle will provide the heavenly beauty that you’re looking for in your travel braids. The sleekness of your crown and the flow of the braids at the back are what make this hairstyle special. If you want to jazz it up, then I recommend putting your baby hair strands to work. It helps accentuate your natural features.

I have created designs with other braids. However, I must admit creating even the simplest designs with box braids make the whole hairstyle more striking.

Middle Part Box Braids

I am such a huge fan of this hairstyle that whenever my clients want some travel braids with some spice I always do this one. I mean, it’s a visually pleasing perfect middle part and the horizontal box braids with accessories are the type of glam you will need.

For me, the key aspect of this hairstyle is keeping the same distance between the braids. This creates an aesthetically pleasing tidied-up look. And the touch of accessories is the additional bling to your already perfect hairdo.

I used to add golden or brass rings and ribbons. However, to match the trend, I use cowries now. They provide my favorite aesthetic bohemian accessory to this hairdo as a plus point.

Cornrow Double Bun

Double buns always put me into a fun spirit. And to make the cornrows into low double buns is what gives me the energy to travel with a cheery spirit.

In my experience, using natural hair for starters and synthetic hair for your buns create a thicker-looking beautiful hairstyle. The chic feminine vibe of this hairstyle is what will make my clients appear as super sassy fashion queens.

I usually do this hairstyle in the summer as they help keep your hair up high in a fun way. But you can incorporate this hairdo all year round as well.

Black and Golden Box Braids

The combination of black and golden for your box braids are the best for your travel look. I want to do this hairstyle so badly for my clients. Because I think golden and black combinations can create a goddess-level hairstyle.

The bohemian appeal of this hairstyle is out of this world. And I love the fact that I can use different colored extensions to enhance the whole look if I please. I can not wait to use it on my clients with more customization.

Red Velvet Box Braids

The beautiful juxtaposition of the sleek and floweriness of braids and undone box braids near the end is what makes your hair look voluminous and appealing.

This particular hairstyle has a mix of red velvet colors and perfects loose curls at the end with white braids in the mix. What more possibly could you want? I did this color on one of my clients and it came out so good that she became one of my regulars.

The color and hairstyle is sure to make anyone feel like the main character. I can not even count how many times I have recreated this hairstyle because of its velvety color.

Knotless Braids with Loose Curls

To be honest, this is my dream protective hairstyle. As much as I love braiding, recreating the perfection of protective hairstyles requires a lot of work, time, and energy.

However, with knotless braids and loose curls, I have to do half the braiding, and the curls do their job looking perfectly delightful on their own.

The blend of knotless braids and loose curls looks heavenly. It creates an effortlessly beautiful look for your trip to the sea beach. I assure you that this hairstyle will make you feel like a mermaid.

Blonde Beauty Box Braids

Blonde micro braids level up your whole look in an instant. It provides a big dose of personality with a whole lot of fabulousness.

As a stylist, I have only done this once on one of my clients as I don’t have the required patience and energy for this. But after I created this look both my client and I were in awe of the sheer beauty of it.

The versatile look with bold blonde colors creates a look no one can ever forget. If you want every travel picture of yours to look Instagram-worthy like mine, then this is the one you should go for.

Box Braids with Beads

I adore the symmetry of box braids. This hairstyle is just that with the same amount of beads at the end enhancing the beauty of the symmetry. Usually, whenever I create this look for my clients, I tend to take a hundred pictures of it because it turns out so well every time.

The main aspect that I love the most about this hairdo is that your hair creates sound because of the beads. Whenever you move your hair they will make a cute noise. And it just pleases my inner child. I hope I get to recreate this look for myself as well.

Middle-length Macro Locs

Mid-length macro locs provide the best kind of volume. I think this hairstyle provides the most realistic edgy look with beautiful textures.

Sometimes, I incorporate this hairstyle with an undercut to appear bold and intimidating. However, most of my clients prefer the natural one.

Aas these hairstyles tend to take hours, I recommend always asking my clients to keep extra time on hand. Whenever I try to do this with my clients, they get impatient and the quality does not turn out to be as good. So keep in mind that it’s a long process before getting this.

Zigzag Cornrow with Triple Bun

I swear my clients come up with top-notch hairstyle ideas! This one is one of the sleekest travel braids I have ever done, and also one of the most beautiful!

The sectioning, the zig zag cornrows, and to top them off, three sleek small braid bun pulls the hairstyle together in the most perfect way possible.

Make sure to use enough mousse while braiding, and also while pinning the buns at the nape. The sleekness will swag up your travels like no other! So get this hairstyle on your next summer trip!

Dutch Pony

This adorable and elegant dutch braided ponytail is an all-time favorite for a quick neat-up! There was this one time when I had only one rubber band with me but I almost teared up at the thought of a plain ponytail or a boring braid.

So, I did this simple mix-up and it came out so well that I could not stop taking my side photos just like the image you see here! Just two Dutch braids meeting at the back in a pony. Save your day with this casual yet elegant look with just a single tie!

Quarter Braids

This braid style screams campervan slash hiking tours! This is super easy and fun to wear. I used to wear them all the time when I had fringes at the front and I swear they would lift up my spirits that day!

All you have to do is to part your hair from the front to the back and then from one ear to another crossing the crown. Now, it is time to braid them up however you want. And that’s how easy it is to have boosted energy all day long!

Cornrow High Ponytail with Curls

My client absolutely loved this one and showed me her photos of slaying this hairstyle on her trips! A sleek, nicely sectioned cornrows meet at the top for a ponytail with loose ends.

Now, this one looks a little less protective, but I assure you that you are free to tuck in your real hair under the cover of extensions. The curled extensions are easy to wear and remove.

Simply clip it on your crown when you go out, and the rest of your hair will stay protected. Try out this luscious curled ponytail on your next tour!

French Braid in a Messy Bun

This one is a go-to for me whenever I need to make a trip with greasy hair! Rather than a plain messy bun, I play with it a little and make a French braid in a C-shape on the top of my head. Then put it into a messy bun on the crown and loosen up some parts to create volume and messiness.

Super easy to do, but it certainly spices up my regular braids or regular messy buns. It protects my hair a little better on trips as well! In urgent scenarios, don’t shy out from trying this!

Two Sided Braid Bun

One of my friends once asked me for a travel braid where stray hairs will not bother her in any way. That without using any extra setting product at all!

I could give her a plain braid bun that would keep all the hair together, but that would not be much jazzy now, would it?

So, I braided her hair like this – one French braid from the front and one from the back to meet at the crown. Then tucking them into a bun made all the difference in the world! Try it whenever you have the same requirements as my friend!

Retro Style Single Braid

This one is one of my personal favorites for travels! So simple, yet so crafty. Not to mention the comfort that comes with it.

Part your hair at the front and make two fishtail braids that go backward to meet one point. Tie them with a rubber band to make a mid-high ponytail. Now, it’s time to attach your favorite scarf or ribbon to it and make a simple dutch braid till the end.

This braid style is so easy to do, yet it would look elegant and perfect for your camp and road trips!

Let’s address some frequently asked questions about travel braids to enhance your capacities further on trying out these unique hairstyles!

Q: Are travel braids suitable for vacations?

A: Travel braids are the most perfect style for vacations. You would have the autonomy to go for a stylish or elegant look throughout your trip without having to spend much time on hair management. Also, they come with extra protectiveness for your hair which is perfect for visiting new environments. On top of it, your pictures will look perfect and insta-genic!

Q: Can you swim in the ocean with travel braids?

A: Loose braids might not be the best option while going for a swim as they might look frizzy when dried, but box braids are great for swimming. You might face significant weight immediately because of the water weighing down the braids, but if you can tolerate that and if your braids are installed decently, then enjoy your frizz-free hair all day long!

Q: Do travel braids really make you look better while traveling?

A: Rather than wearing your hair down, or in a simple ponytail for comfort throughout the journey, try choosing a travel braid style for yourself. It will give you an effortlessly classy and chic look on your trips.

Q: How often should I wash my travel braids?

A: You can leave them unwashed for even two to three weeks. One of the reasons travel braids are great for traveling is that you can go for longer days with unwashed hair if there is not enough privilege to wash your hair every other day.

Q: What to do if my travel braids get wet?

A: Dry your hair thoroughly if your braids get wet. It might start smelling if you leave them damp for too long, and molds might begin to form to make everything worse for later.

All the travel braids you see in the list are suitable and efficient for traveling, unlike the braids that are more towards elegance and softness. These braids are made for the wind and dust!

They will surely keep your hair photogenic throughout the day while at the same time saving them from pollution and damage.  So, among all the excitement of a trip, don’t forget to leave just a little time to give a quick care to your hair.

Choose a braid of your choice and enjoy your tour without any interruption. Just a little investment in a travel braid will surely save you from days’ and weeks’ of extra hair care.

Not to mention how stylishly they contribute to your appearance! So bet on these braids and save the pain of hair wash on a trip!

How to Choose the Right Vacation Hairstyle

When it comes to choosing the right vacation hairstyle, there are several factors to consider. Here are some things to keep in mind before selecting your braids:

Personal Preference

Your personal preference is the most important factor to consider when choosing your vacation hairstyle. You want to feel comfortable and confident with your braids, so choose a style that you like and that suits your personality.

How Long Do You Want to Keep Your Braids In?

Consider how long you want to keep your braids in. If you plan to keep them in for a long time, choose a style that will last and won’t require too much maintenance. If you prefer to change your hairstyle frequently, consider a shorter-term style.

What Activities Will You Be Doing?

Think about the activities you will be doing on your vacation. If you plan to swim, choose a braided style that will hold up well in water. If you plan to be active, choose a style that won’t get in the way or require too much maintenance.

What is Your Head Shape?

Consider your head shape when choosing your braids. Certain styles may look better on certain head shapes, so choose a style that flatters your face.

What is Your Budget?

Your budget is also an important factor to consider. Some braided styles can be expensive, so choose a style that fits within your budget.

What is the Occasion?

Finally, consider the occasion for your vacation. If it’s a work trip, you may want to choose a more formal style. If it’s a casual vacation, you may want to choose a more relaxed style.

By considering these factors, you can choose the right vacation hairstyle that will make you feel confident and comfortable throughout your trip.

How to Maintain Your Braids During Vacation

If you are planning a vacation, braids are a great hairstyle choice. They are low maintenance, practical, and stylish. However, it is important to take care of your braids to keep them looking fresh and neat throughout your trip. Here are some tips on how to maintain your braids during vacation.

Sleep with a Bonnet On

When you go to bed, make sure to wear a bonnet or a scarf to protect your braids. This will prevent them from frizzing and tangling while you sleep. A satin bonnet or scarf is the best option as it will not strip your hair of moisture.

Low Manipulation

Braids are a protective hairstyle, but they still require some maintenance. Avoid excessive touching, pulling, or tugging on your braids as this can cause breakage and damage to your hair. Try to keep your hands out of your hair and avoid tight hairstyles that can pull on your braids.

Cleanse Your Scalp

It is important to keep your scalp clean and healthy while wearing braids. Use a diluted shampoo or a clarifying rinse to cleanse your scalp every few days. You can also use a dry shampoo or a scalp refresher spray to refresh your hair between washes.

Keep Your Hair Moisturized

Braids can be drying to your hair, so it is important to keep them moisturized. Use a lightweight oil or a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated. You can also use a moisturizing spray to refresh your braids throughout the day.

By following these tips, you can keep your braids looking fresh and neat during your vacation. Remember to take care of your hair and enjoy your trip!

21+ gorgeous go-to braids for vacation hairstyles

Congratulations! You’ve now got a bunch of amazing braided hairstyle ideas for your next vacation. Whether you’re heading to the beach or exploring a new city, these braids will keep you looking stylish and feeling comfortable.

Remember, when choosing a vacation hairstyle, it’s important to consider your hair type, the climate, and the activities you’ll be doing. Opt for low-maintenance styles like box braids or twists if you’re planning to be active, or go for a more intricate braided updo if you’re looking for a chic evening look.

Don’t forget to take care of your braids while on vacation. Keep your scalp moisturized and your braids clean to prevent any build-up or irritation. Pack a few hair accessories like scarves or headbands to switch up your look throughout your trip.

With these braided vacation hairstyles, you’ll be able to spend less time worrying about your hair and more time enjoying your travels. So go ahead and book that vacation – your hair is covered!

Travel Braids: Stylish & Easy Hairstyles for Your Adventures

Published by hamza on 22 november 2023 22 november 2023.

Heading out on adventures often means finding practical and chic ways to style your hair, and that’s where travel braids come in! These versatile hairstyles blend style and convenience, making them the perfect choice for on the go hairdos. Whether exploring a new city, lounging on a beach, or trekking through picturesque landscapes, travel braids ensure you’re ready for every moment of your journey with flair and ease.

The Single Braid

Travel braids offer a range of styles; among them, the single braid stands out as the simplest to achieve. There’s no need to book a stylist. This braid is effortlessly doable on your own. Moreover, if your hair is long enough and you feel creative, you can quickly transform the single braid into a charming halo or ‘milkmaid’ look.

French / Dutch Braids

French or Dutch braids serve as excellent choices among travel braids. Yet, mastering these braiding styles requires a touch of finesse and often demands ample practice before achieving perfection. Considering a hairstylist’s expertise is the easiest route for a hassle free approach. This ensures precision and tightness in your braids, which tend to loosen gradually as your hair grows.

Fishtail Braid

Fishtail braids, characterized by their distinctive braiding technique, offer a stylish choice for your upcoming travel arrangements. These braids stand out with their intricate appearance, adding an eye catching allure to your overall look during your travels.

Rope / Twist Braid

Twist or rope braids offer a distinctive departure from conventional braiding styles. Their departure from the norm provides a refreshing change, breaking away from the usual patterns seen in traditional braids. The simplicity inherent in these styles sets them apart, making them notably easy to create independently. This simplicity streamlines the hairstyling process, enabling swift and effortless creation, which is particularly advantageous for those on the go.

These inherent qualities catapult twist or rope braids to the forefront of our top choices for travel braids. Their easy to create nature aligns perfectly with travel demands, allowing for quick and hassle free hairstyling while on the move. The convenience of effortlessly achieving these braids independently makes them ideal for individuals seeking a stylish yet manageable hairstyle during their travels.

Individual / Plaits / Box Braids

Indeed, this specific braiding style garners significant favor among many, primarily because of its appealing aesthetics and remarkable versatility. Its attractiveness lies not only in its visual appeal but also in its adaptability to various hair types and lengths. Additionally, the ability to style these braids in numerous ways opens up a world of possibilities, offering a broad spectrum of looks suitable for various preferences and occasions.

Moreover, the versatility of this braiding style extends beyond its aesthetic charm. It acts as a canvas for creativity, enabling individuals to experiment and create diverse looks. Whether it’s a casual outing, a formal event, or a laid back vacation, the adaptability of these braids ensures that they seamlessly complement different settings and clothing styles. The freedom to customize these braids according to one’s liking contributes to their popularity, as they offer endless opportunities for expressing individuality through hairstyling.

Furthermore, this braiding style’s limitless potential for creating diverse looks is a standout feature. It presents various options, from simple and classic variations to more intricate and elaborate designs. This versatility caters to multiple moods, occasions, and personal preferences, making it a go to choice for those seeking a hairstyle that effortlessly adapts to different settings and styles.

Crochet Braids

If traditional braided hairstyles differ from your travel preference, crochet braids offer an excellent alternative. These braids remain concealed as hair extensions cover them, providing flexibility for desired hairstyles. While tutorials on platforms such as YouTube can aid in mastering this technique, it’s crucial to recognize that the process may require a substantial time investment. Considering the intricacy involved, opting for a hairstylist’s expertise might be beneficial. Moreover, if styling isn’t your forte, your hairstylist can skillfully customize the hair extensions according to your preferences.

In conclusion, embracing travel braids opens up a world of stylish and hassle free adventure hairstyling options. From the simplicity of single braids to the intricate elegance of fishtail or rope braids, these versatile hairstyles offer various choices for various travel occasions. Whether you’re exploring new destinations or lounging on a beach, the adaptability of travel braids ensures you look chic and put together effortlessly. Given their convenience and diverse styling possibilities, travel braids become your reliable companions, enabling you to concentrate more on your journey and less on hairstyling concerns.

Best Travel Braids For 2022

No matter if you’re a natural-hair traveler or have silky smooth locks, you don’t want to fuss over your hair while traveling. In fact, you don’t want to spend a single moment on anything that can take away from your enjoyment of your much needed vacation. Having to fix your hair each day is time consuming and can feel like a chore. And stepping out with a bird’s nest on your head just isn’t an option.

That’s why travel braids are the best recourse. They look good and they last a long time. Not to mention braids allow your hair to grow. It’s an all around win! In this article, we’ll present some of our top choices for Travel Braids in 2022.

The Single Braid

This is pretty self-explanatory. Among the travel braids, the single braid is by far the easiest to achieve, you don’t need to pay a stylist to do it. You can certainly do it yourself. If you’re able and your hair is long enough, you’ll also be able to to take your single braid and style it into the halo or ‘milkmaid’ look.

French / Dutch Braids

French or Dutch braids are another great option for travel braids. However, they take a bit of finesse to achieve and may take tons of practice before getting them right. The easiest route to take would be to simply have a hair stylist do it for you. That way, you can ensure that they will be done right and tight, as braids evidently loosen as your hair grows over time.

Fishtail Braid

Fishtail braids are achieved by a unique braiding technique that look great and are a nice choice for your next travel excursion. Fancier than typical braids, these travel braids are sure to catch people’s eye.

Rope / Twist Braid

Twist or rope braids aren’t your typical braids either. They are extremely easy to do yourself and quick to achieve. That’s why these are among our favorite travel braids to have.

Individual / Plaits / Box Braids

This braiding style is possibly the number one choice for the majority of us because they look nice and they’re extremely versatile. You can style them just about any way, the possibilities are limitless.

Crochet Braids

If you’re not a huge fan of traveling around with braids because you’re not crazy about the look of them, then you’ll love crochet braids. The braids themselves aren’t actually seen. Hair extensions are attached to the braids, covering them up and giving you just about any hair style you want to have. This is something that you can learn by watching a tutorial on YouTube but because this braiding technique is so time consuming, you may want to consider having a hair stylist do it. Also, if you’re not good at styling your hair, your hair stylist can style the hair extensions to your specifications.

7 Travel Hairstyles for Natural Hair + Locs

99 problems, don’t let hair be one!

Traveling is stressful when you think about packing the right number of outfits, for every possible scenario, and the shoes to go with. Plus, having the right combination of clothes (many of which never escape the luggage), along with planning activities too.

When traveling, my hairstyle is not on my list of things to worry about. My focus on healthy hair, seamless hair, and styles that compliment me in any given situation and saves time is key.

Natural hair has been good to me. I’m so carefree. Sweating my hair out, dipping in the ocean, or hiking in the rainforest don’t bother me!

Here are a few of my favorite travel hairstyles to maintain healthy hair while traveling:

Check out 7 travel hairstyles for natural hair and locs. Click To Tweet

1. pipe cleaners with natural hair + locs.

Oh the things you can do with pipe cleaners! The flexible wires/rods are available in assorted shapes, sizes, and colors. Find them wherever arts & crafts or office supplies are sold. I love pipe cleaners with my natural hair. They offer versatility as you see in my travel hairstyle above. With my dreadlocks in pipe cleaners I’m able to achieve a shorter hairstyle. My hair is away from my face and protected from elements. This style quickly lets down for nights out on the town. Yes, I can wash my hair and swim with pipe cleaners. I always follow any dips in the ocean with a good wash, leave-in conditioner, and oils.

2. Flat twists

Flat twists with a bun or pony tail helped me travel with ease in Bali . When traveling in hot climates, I like to keep my hair up and out of my face. The flat twists offer a different look and stays secure in place. Bring on the adventures!

3. Twists and messy bun

Beaching in Turks and Caicos with my hair in a twisted high bun. This hairstyle seamlessly lets down and maintains a curled/wavy pattern offering an alternative hairstyle fresh out the water.

4. Locs and curls

When on the sand and out of the water, I love to rock a head full of curls. Talking about bouncing and behaving! These tight curls stay in place until taken out.

5. Twisted and pulled up

Elegant and functional hairstyle incorporates flat twists in a high bun.

6. Braided pin-up

Braids or plats worn up or down are super adaptable. Since I’m always hot, I like my hair out of my face in tropical climates. My floppy hat easily slips over my locs. I’m ready to hit the town.

7. On the side

Not sure what it is about wearing my hair to the side but I love it too! Can easily accomplish a messy bun, pony tail, or pin-up.

8. Bonus: Pipe cleaners with natural hair + locs

So, these are a few of my favorite travel hairstyles for natural hair and locs. With every style, I can swim and go about my travels without worrying about my hair. These styles are also great on the plane.

My hair essentials: Jojoba, castor, and tea tree oils are my favorite to maintain moisture and balance when traveling. I usually don’t leave home without my pipe cleaners.

What are your favorite travel hairstyles to rock on the road?

48 Braided Hairstyles to Save You From the Summer Heat

Will you braid my hair?

A woman, Zendaya, wearing her hair in a long braid on the red carpet.

Listen: your messy ponytail had a good run. That wild, swirled-up bun served you well for a while, too. But with summer heat here, we're embracing braided hairstyles that get hair off the neck—and look polished enough for the office.

When communicating creativity through your hair, a braided hairstyle might be the best way to let your talents shine. Whether you're using your own natural texture or throwing in some fake hair for extra length, braids are absolutely one of the lowest-maintenance, highest-style options around.

If you're new to wearing braids, no worries—we have all the pro tips. Celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen (she's the one responsible for Zendaya 's gorgeous plaits) says to be sure to add a leave-in conditioner, while Harry Josh likes to use a light-hold hairspray before braiding to give the hair some grip.

From an accessorized crown braid to jumbo knotless box braids, French braids or Dutch braids , you have choices galore regarding the best braided hairstyles. We've pulled braid inspo from celebrities far and wide to present you with looks suitable for every occasion and hair texture. Some of these styles may take a great chunk of your day to achieve but will last for weeks , while others can be achieved—and taken back out—in no time.

Scroll ahead for 48 braided hairstyle options.

Curly Dutch Braids

Curly Dutch Braids

Andra Day , you've done it again. This gorgeous style features double the fun elements—lengthy Dutch braids and bouncy ringlets are equally the main event. And for a bit of extra fun? The hair left out at the end of the braids allows even more curl, tying everything together.

High Pony Box Braids

High Pony Box Braids

Retiring your signature top knot or ponytail is difficult. So why not switch it up a bit with box braids styled into a high pony à la Chloe Bailey? It's a protective style that's perfect for the warm summer months.

Criss-Crossed Cornrows

Criss-Crossed Cornrows

Teyana Taylor is looking fabulous (as per usual) with crisscrossing cornrows and laid baby hairs. To replicate the slicked look, apply  edge control  on your baby hairs using a small toothbrush, then tie your hair down with a silk scarf.

Jumbo Knotless Braids

Jumbo Knotless Braids

Jumbo knotless braids are always a good idea. Right, Whitney Peak? Not only is this style completely painless to install, but you can cut styling time in half compared to small individual braids if your patience wears thin.

Updo With a Twist

Updo With a Twist

If looking regal is your thing, do as Olivia Culpo did and add a unique twist to your formal updo with a medium-sized braid placed along the side. Then, simply pull it back into a bun of ringlets. Gorgeous hair, your highness.

Loosely-Braided Fishtail

Loosely-Braided Fishtail

Justine Skye , how does it feel to wear the world's most perfect fishtail braid?

"If you're looking to elevate your braiding game beyond the classic three-strand, I recommend trying a fishtail braid or a Dutch braid," explains celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh . "The fishtail braid offers a more intricate, woven appearance and is surprisingly easy to master with a bit of practice. The Dutch braid, also known as an inside-out or reverse braid, sits on top of the hair rather than blending in, creating a bold, dimensional look," adds Josh.

Bedecked Blonde Braids

Bedecked Blonde Braids

Looking to jazz up your braids? Embellish your cornrows with beads or try a vibrant color like bleach blonde . If you're as bold as Solange , do both .

When working on extra-long styles, Stephen likes using clip-ins and hair pieces from  The Hair Shop . "They have a very wide selection of colors and lengths," she notes.

Decorative Braids

Decorative Braids

At the 2024 Met Gala , Quannah Chasinghorse's long locks featured a selection of intricate braids: multiple twisted strands were woven on each side of her head before they were worked into an inverted French braid.

“The braiding and use of accessories with native beadwork in this year’s look shows the artistry and creativity of her people,” her hairstylist, Paula Peralta, told Allure . “It shows that beauty is not a monolith.”

Teeny Tiny Braids

Teeny Tiny Braids

While this style on Laura Harrier is absolutely beautiful, please note that long micro-braids take quite a while to complete (usually six-plus hours depending on the braider). The plus side? They're so versatile. Rock your braids half-up like Harrier, in a low ponytail, or even up into a top knot—the styling options are endless.

Simple Pigtails

Simple Pigtails

America Ferrera showed up at a Barbie premiere in 2023 wearing her soon-to-be-chopped hair in the cutest set of pigtails. Simplicity is key here—you just need a slicked-back part and some tiny elastics to secure the look.

"For added security with a braid, I like to use a light-hold hairspray before braiding to give the hair some grip, and a small dab of the  Kerasilk Finishing Cream  at the ends before tying them off," notes Josh. "This combination ensures that the braids stay intact throughout the day."

Half-Up, Half-Down Braids

Half-Up, Half-Down Braids

Here, Gabby Union showcases the versatility of tiny box braids. The Y2K movie darling looks incredible in this '90s staple, the  half-up, half-down hairstyle .

Boho Braided Ponytail

Tortured Poets Department - core, anyone? Emma Chamberlain 's long, skinny, waist-length braids are bedecked in bows of both the velvet and string varieties for a little excitement. This style is so easy to emulate. Simply middle part your hair, braid it up, and tie on ribbon.

Classic Cornrows

Adwoa Aboah can often be spotted with gorgeous cornrows. Simple and classic, this style plays oh so well with her fresh-faced glow.

Jumbo Loop Braids

Jumbo Loop Braids

Josh crafted major loop braids for Irina Shayk at the 2024 King's Trust Global Gala. According to an Instagram post by the artist, the loops were connected at the nape of her neck.

"One of my go-to products for braided styles is a good texturizing spray, like  Kerasilk Texturizing Finishing Spray , which adds grip to the hair, making it easier to braid and ensuring they stay put," explains the expert.

Simple Lengthy Braid

Here, a gorgeous-in-green Ashley Graham went simple chic with one long braid that hung effortlessly over her shoulder. Her slick middle part and face-framing strands tied the look together.

Braided Cornrow Bun

Just when you thought Lupita Nyong'o couldn't look any more regal, these single cornrows added a dimensional layer of elegance to her braided updo. The lesson here? Cornrows can easily upgrade a classic look.

Braided Crown

While Storm Reid 's soft waves are pretty on their own, the braid at her crown brings this look to a whole new level. Now, imagine if she pulled her hair back. So many options!

Voluminous Three-Strand Braid

Voluminous Three-Strand Braid

The ultimate this-ol'-thing hairstyle, Shay Mitchell 's low and loose three-strand braid defies gravity with a billion face-framing layers.

SImple French Braid

SImple French Braid

Kate Hudson , I'm sorry we can't see your face here. But we'd know those California blonde strands anywhere. Tie a bow around a soft, segmented French braid and it becomes decidedly less elementary.

Super Soft Hidden Braid

Super Soft Hidden Braid

We promise there's a braid back there! If anything, Emma Stone 's ethereal 2024 BAFTAs hairstyle proves the versatility of the style—spotting a twist in the back instead of a soft bun is a treat in itself.

Halo Crown Braid

Halo Crown Braid

Soft, sleek, and just slightly fuzzy, Jennie's halo braid isn't a feat of magic, but the result of gently tugging and pulling each section of the braid for a semi-undone feel.

Bedhead Fishtail Braid

All hail the queen of the boho braid! Here's Blake Lively 's loose, unraveled version of the fishtail braid: the bedhead fishtail.

Messy Voluminous French Braid

The beauty of this braid is that it's not overly perfect: It's pancaked enough that it avoids looking too precious and it makes a cool contrast to Amanda Seyfried 's polished red carpet gown.

Major Halo Braid

According to the very wise Alicia Keys , the bigger and bolder, the better. Here, she piles an impressive braid atop her head for a halo-like effect.

Low Braided Bun

Low Braided Bun

The low braided bun: a less overdone take on the chignon. Leave it to Cardi B to keep things interesting in the hair department .

Extra-Long Braided Ponytail

Extra-Long Braided Ponytail

"Some of my favorite braids to work on are big bold plaits," Stephen tells Marie Claire . "One of my favorites that I’ve created lately is the long blonde plait that I did on Zendaya for the Challengers premiere in London."

While walking the red carpet, the starlet kept the style in motion, swaying back and forth and back and forth. We'll call that a serve .

Braid Crown

Braid Crown

A braid crown is the unofficial hair mascot of your average music festival, and for good reason: it's pretty and prevents any sweaty hair moments in the sun. Here, Kate Bosworth translates the look to the red carpet. (And yes, it works!)

Decorative Braid

Decorative Braid

Kate Middleton is an expert at weaving braids into her elegant hairstyles, and her daughter Princess Charlotte is following in her footsteps . For Christmas 2023, she tucked a simple braid under her fascinator.

Hidden Braids

Braids All Over

Madonna doubled her braid appeal with looped braids and tiny face-framing strands. If you're not as comfortable doing both, you can try either type all on its own.

Loose-On-Top Fishtail

A stunning take on the fishtail braid by Ciara : half of the hair coiled up in a tight side braid and the other half left loose and flowing on top.

Sweet Braided Crown

We dubbed this look by Rachel McAdams one of the sweetest  hairstyles to get married in  and you can see why: the double braids and the flower tucked behind the ear are pure magic.

Double French Braid

Wispy Braided Updo

Cate Blanchett can do no wrong on the red carpet. This wispy, twisted French braid updo will make everyone do a double-take.

Patterned Cornrows

Patterned Cornrows

It's been a while since Rihanna rocked braids (she's more into the blonde blowouts these days), but her cornrows will always be classic. On this particular evening, she chose a sort of criss-crossed scalp pattern for her look.

Tucked Braid

Tucked Braid

A cute little five-minute braid tuck is the best way to add some oomph to your hair without really lifting a finger.

Braids and a Hat

Braids and a Hat

Kim Kardashian knows better than anyone that there might be cameras around every turn. With that being said, her off-duty looks—like these simple three-strand braids paired with a perfectly destructed baseball cap—are always something to behold.

High Ponytail Braid

High Ponytail Braid

What's a braid story without a double appearance from the IRL Lara Croft of braids, Blake Lively? Pro tip for this look: Loop a length of hair around the top of your braid and secure it  just the way you would hide a hair tie .

Milkmaid Braid

Milkmaid Braid

Meet the Milkmaid. Scarlett Johansson's style does wonders when you don't want a single hair in your face.

Victorian Mourning Braids

Victorian Mourning Braids

Leave it to Chloë Sevigny to bring one of the most intricate (and interesting) hairstyles to the 2024 Met Gala. "We’re incorporating a lot of hair and an homage to the Victorians, and in the Victorian era, how they celebrated their loved ones who passed away by making ornaments and jewelry out of their dead or their loved one’s hair," she told Vogue .

Double Milkmaid Braids

A *double* braided milkmaid offered Penelope Cruz a Grecian-style hair crown. Pretty smart, huh?

Tie-Less Braids

Tie-Less Braids

The Bailey sisters are young, but they already have hundreds of looks banked in the braided hair hall of fame. Halle Bailey wore these jumbo braids to Paris Fashion Week in Fall 2023 and, although the look is gorgeous from top to bottom, the transition to curls at the base of each braid is perhaps our favorite element.

I’m completely useless when it comes to even giving myself a simple braid, so what did I do? I took the plunge and cut off my long hair into a pixie cut. Less fuss when getting ready, easier to clean, and I use less precious shampoo from those tiny 3 oz bottles.

alex

Many girls chop their hair off for travel. Glad it worked for you!

Ally

I don’t either but you can follow the tutorials and they show you how to create the hair styles 🙂

I was so excited about the sock-bun tutorial, especially!! I have always wondered how those girls pulled off such perfect buns! Im a big fan of head wraps too although it gets waaayy too hot for them in the summer time! I bike and snowboard a lot and I loathe helmet hair so I do a lot of french side braids and twists. And im heading off to South America for 6 months soon so these tips will def come in handy!

Yes, me too! I finally have hair long enough to create a proper bun!

Braids and twists are the only thing keeping me going right now in SE Asia with the humidity…

Glad this helped!

Britany

I’m always rocking a french braid when I travel. It keeps everything out of my face and looks cute. Practice at home before you go and soon enough, you’ll be so quick with your fingers, you’ll be able to french up your hair on the top bunk of a sleeper train. Its not easy, but can be done!

good idea! wish i was better at braids!

Bethaney - Flashpacker Family

That sock bun technique is awesome! I wish my hair was long enough for it.

I actually let my hair grow just for my travels. The sock bun technique is great on or off the road. What’s your travel hair style preference?

The 14 Different Types of Braids and How to Create Them, According to Stylists

pictures of travel braids

@skaijackson / Instagram

Braids are something of a workhorse in the world of hairstyles: they're all at once classic and trendy—and protective, to boot. That being said, there are so many types and styles of braids, it can be difficult to settle on just one kind.

To help manage the overwhelm, we've gathered 14 of the most popular braided hairstyles and supplemented them with celeb photos so you can see what each style looks like, IRL. We also consulted with top celebrity hairstylists and a trichologist to compile tips, tricks, and tutorials for each braid.

Meet the Expert

  • Lacy Redway is a Unilever Global Stylist, TRESemmé Future Stylists Fund Selection Committee Member, and celebrity hairstylist who has worked with Ruth Negga, Lucy Boynton, Laura Harrier, and more.
  • Kendall Dorsey is a celebrity hairstylist who works with clients like Kelly Rowland, Saweetie, Alicia Keys, and more.
  • Dr. Kari Williams  is a licensed cosmetologist, board-certified trichologist, and member of DevaCurl’s Expert Curl Council.

Box braids are created by securing the hair extension around the base of the natural hair and creating a box-like knot attachment at the root. They were especially popular in the '90s, which gives them a cool-girl vibe when worn today. "Box braids serve as a protective style on textured hair," Lacy Redway, Unilever Global Stylist, TRESemmé Future Stylists Fund Selection Committee Member, and celebrity hairstylist, adds. "It allows you to have your hair protected for a period of time while still being able to style it in various hairstyles using the box braids as the foundation of the hairstyles."

Knotless Braids

Gregg DeGuire

Knotless braids have gained popularity for being a more lightweight, natural-looking alternative to box braids. Unlike traditional box braids, this style doesn't have the traditional knot at the top of each braid. Instead, it is achieved by feeding in the hair mid-braid. "The benefit of the knotless technique (when done properly) is it prevents traction alopecia, which is a common form of hair loss for women who have braids that are installed too tight with the large knots," says trichologist, Kari Williams. "This technique can take longer to install, but it's worth the health of the hair and scalp."

Micro Braids

Getty Images / JB Lacroix

Micro braids are just like box braids in that they can be created using the same technique. They're just—you guessed it—smaller. The modern-day poster child for micro braids (in our humble opinion) is Zoë Kravitz. She has walked many a red carpet donning the very same chic style, albeit with a couple of hair color switch-ups along the way. "They are designed to be versatile, which is the beauty of them," Redway says. "You can style as you please."

Cornrow Braids

As you can see from Yara Shahidi, actress and activist extraordinaire, cornrows are braids that form narrow parallel strips down the head. They're normally positioned from front to back, but she put a unique twist on a classic look by wearing hers pulled back with a wired braid construction artfully crafted around it.

Crown Braid

Getty Images

Next, we have the crown braid , which looks complex and time-consuming but happens to be exactly the opposite. Our favorite way to create a crown braid is to start with a traditional side braid before wrapping it up and over the top of the forehead, securing it with bobby pins along the way. We always make sure to leave out a couple of face-framing pieces à la Vanessa Hudgens.

Fishtail Braid

A fishtail braid is one of our all-time favorite styles as it's playful and unexpected. It's easy to distinguish from other braids since it looks like a mirror reflection of itself. Storm Reid shows us how it's done by styling her box braid, fishtail braid off to one side.

French Braid

A French braid , as demonstrated by Emily Blunt, is a traditional three-piece braid. As you plait the hair together, add a section from either side on each rotation. It's one of the most versatile and chic of braids, which is why we see it so often at red carpet events. Style it in the traditional way, as a single-braided strand running down the nape of the neck, or do as Blunt does and position it to the side for an elegant updo.

With practice, it's an easy style to create. If you need a little refresher, head to YouTube for pointers (no judgment—braiding takes a lot of time and patience).

Key Takeaways

  • Knotless box braids are super popular now—and for good reason. Since there's less tension at the root, there's less chance of traction alopecia (aka hair loss) around your edges.
  • Crown braids look complicated, but it's really as easy as taking a side braid and wrapping it around the crown of your head.

Dutch Braid

A Dutch braid , on the other hand, is created in the same exact way as you would a French braid—except inverted. Instead of winding the hair over itself as you plait, you wind it underneath the other strands. This small change makes a big difference. You see, instead of the braid flowing inward, it flows outward, which makes the braid pop out slightly. Take Rita Ora's hair, for example. Here, she wears it in Dutch-braided pigtails. Just compare her braids to Emily Blunt's French-braided style, and you'll see that Ora's braids are much more defined and visible.

In essence, think of a Dutch braid like a bolder version of a French braid. All it requires is that you reverse the French braid technique.

A Dutch braid may sound easy in theory, but it can be extremely difficult for a braid novice, which is why we've created a step-by-step tutorial  with celebrity hairstylist Anh Co Tran to make it easy for you to replicate Ora's exact style.

Milkmaid Braid

The milkmaid braid is almost identical to the aforementioned crown braid, but instead of being situated on the top of the forehead (where an actual crown would sit), it's pushed back a couple of inches to rest more toward the middle of the head. It's also more likely to begin with a center part, as opposed to a side part, for a more traditional look. To create, "Divide your hair by the nape of your neck in two sections," says Redway. "Braid each section into two braids before crisscrossing them onto themselves and securing them with hair and bobby pins." We think it's best demonstrated by Sarah Hyland at the Fox Golden Globes party. (By the way, if you've already mastered this style, try a reverse milkmaid braid  for a new take.)

Waterfall Braid

Waterfall braids look intricate, but luckily, they aren't as complicated as they seem. Think of them like a French braid, but one side of the braid is woven and the opposite part cascades down into the hair. To create a waterfall braid, pretend you are beginning a French braid. Section the hair into three pieces, cross the top section over the middle, and, instead of grabbing more hair, let this section hang down. Cross the remaining pieces over one another, then grab a new piece from the top and incorporate it into the braid. Repeat the steps.

3 Strand Braid

This braiding technique is the foundation for the rest of the looks on this list. Without it, the rest of these braids are not possible. To try for yourself, section hair into three strands. Take the left piece and cross it over the middle, making it the new middle. Then, take the right-most piece and cross it over the middle, making it the new middle. Repeat this process over and over until you reach the end of your strands.

Shay Mitchell demonstrates one of the many ways you can wear this style. Appropriate for any hair type, the three-strand braid can be tightly kept or intentionally loosened to show volume and body.

Rope Braids

getty Images

"The trick with this hairstyle is that it doubles as a second hairstyle," Redway says. "When the hairstyle starts to frizz up, release them and wear your hair down because you will now have beautiful water waves ." Unlike many of the other styles on this list, the rope braid only requires two sections of hair. Take one of the sections and twist the hair until the entire section is spiraled. Secure with a clear elastic. Repeat on the other side. Take each section and twist them around one another. Secure at the bottom.

Pigtail Braids

Pigtail braids couldn't be easier, and require pulling the hair into two low ponytails before braiding the ends of each. You can then fasten with an elastic and go. The look recalls a childhood style but can easily be made sophisticated, by smoothing flyaways with a flexible-hold gel.

Pascal Le Segretain / Getty Images

The halo braid is similar to a crown braid, and consists of long Dutch braids placed around the head and fastened on top, to mimic a halo. Remove a few tendrils to frame the face and keep the look more casual.

The classic three-strand braid is the foundation for all braided styles. Without knowing that technique, you cannot master more complicated styles.

The most popular braid largely depends on what you are exposed to. Dorsey says his most popular request from clients is for a knotless box braid. "I have been feeding in human hair to the braid to create length and body," Dorsey says. "Sort of like a Lisa Bonet vibe."

"All braids have some type of longevity," Dorsey says. "Knotless braids, knot braids, cornrows, box braids, and senegalese twists are long-lasting protective styles and are meant to last in the hair."

The hardest type of braid is dependent on the person. One person may struggle with a fishtail braid while another may be unable to master a waterfall braid. Regardless, the more complicated or intricate a braid pattern gets, the more difficult it will be to execute.

20 Braided Styles on Screen That Were Culture-Making Moments

Braids are the ultimate go-to hairstyle for when you want to take a break from wearing natural hairstyles, especially during the summer.

Once the warmer weather hits, it’s almost like clockwork to see an influx of braided hairstyles. Despite the endless number of styles to try, one of the biggest benefits of braids is their protective elements. Protective styles will always be in the natural hair community’s back pocket for all curl types and textures.

While it’s fun to experiment and be creative with different curly hairstyles, it can get exhausting. From the extensive wash day routines to frequent manipulations, the peace of having braids is incomparable. The versatility, designs, lengths, and colors offer endless style opportunities.

Braids are an art form that, at one point, was not as remarkably celebrated in pop culture as it is today. Now more than ever, braided hairstyles are celebrated across music, film, TV, sports, print, social media, and other mediums. Celebrities such as Gabrielle Union , Lupita Nyong’o, Kerry Washington, Marsai Martin, Janelle Monae, Tracee Ellis Ross, and other high-profile individuals wear braids on-screen and off.

With the help of mainstream media, other women have been empowered to wear braids in other industries opposite of the red carpet. Lawyers, news anchors, politicians, corporate employees, legal professionals, and others freely flaunt their braids online and in real life.

Some may view the increased representation of braids as another trendy moment worth joining. But for Black and other people of color, showing off their braids is an acceptance of African culture. With each new creative design and style exposed to the masses, another opportunity is presented that keeps African and Black culture alive.

If you need some braid inspiration, here are 20 culture-defining braided styles worn by society’s most influential people.

Traveling with little ones can be a day at the beach, thanks to these thoughtful gifts.

Just because he’s become a dad doesn’t mean your favorite traveler has to also become a homebody. Sure, it can be tougher to get around with a little person pretty much attached to him but it can be done more enjoyably than he might think.

We’ve found a variety of gifts that make travel so much easier with babies and toddlers that he won’t want to go anywhere without them – both the gifts and the kids – ever again.

Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat

Getting little ones in and out of car seats can be challenging but Graco has changed the game with a rotating feature that will make Dad’s life so much easier, especially if he’s planning to make frequent stops on a road trip. Of course, safety comes first and this seat protects kids on all sides and can be used rear or forward facing or as a booster. It also has a headrest that adjusts to 10 different positions to keep children safe and comfortable as they grow. Price: $349

Dagne Dover Indi Neoprene Diaper Backpack

A diaper bag is a new parent essential but Dad is probably more interested in practicality than cuteness. Luckily, this one has both in spades so anyone will feel good about carrying it around, even on the most luxury vacation — especially in sophisticated black. It easily clips onto a stroller and features lots of pockets, pouches and even a mini changing pad. Plus, it features a dedicated safe space for his laptop so he can get some work done while baby sleeps. Price: $215

Regalo Play Mat with Travel Case

Whether they’re waiting for a flight or spending the night in a hotel, this cushy foam mat gives Dad a clean, safe place to put little ones down. It’s even waterproof so he can use it outdoors and clean it right up afterwards. Older kids will get a kick out of the design, with its roads and parks, and will enjoy playing with their own toy cars and trucks on it. Babies will just find it soft and comfortable and dads will be glad they can give their arms a rest. Price: $49.99

Magnetic Me Lake You A Lot Grow With Me Convertible Coverall

Having to change a baby on a plane or at a rest stop is way easier with one of these adorable, magnetized rompers. Made of super soft, breathable and temperature regulating Tencel modal, it features a magnetic closure, which means no snaps and zippers that can take forever to do properly. It also has foldover cuffs to keep little hands and feet cozy on over-air conditioned flights. You can choose from dozens of cute prints but this one is perfect for spending long weekends at the lake. Price: $40

KeaBabies Baby Car Seat Mirror

Rear facing car seats are safest for babies but, if Dad is driving alone with his little one, it can be disconcerting not to be able to see what’s going on back there. This shatterproof mirror is a game-changer, letting him keep his mind on the road while keeping an eye on his precious cargo. Price $19.96

Looky Lou Bundle

Vacations offer lots of cute photo ops but, let’s face it, babies are not always the most cooperative subjects. Thanks to the innovative Looky Lou, all Dad has to do is clip this cute little rattle to his phone and suddenly everyone’s looking in the right direction and smiling. The bundle comes with a board book introducing little ones to Lou the lion so they’ll be especially happy to see him whenever Dad feels like capturing the moment. Price: $29

Keep Going First Aid Kit Bundle

Because kids are unpredictable and accidents happen, give Dad some peace of mind with this trio of different sized first aid kits to prepare him for anything. He can keep one in the car, toss one in the diaper bag, pack one in the luggage. Well organized and easy to access, the kits include everything from bandages and ointments to nosebleed plugs, tick removers and burn gels. Hopefully he’ll never have to use it but, if he does, it will absolutely be the gift he’s most thankful for. Price: $124.97
