The Psychedelic Furs: Royal Albert Hall, London – live review

The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs | Jah Wobble & The Invaders of the Heart | Wasted Youth Royal Albert Hall, London 5th April 2022

Third time lucky, The Psychedelic Furs finally make it to the Royal Albert Hall for their very special show celebrating the release of critically acclaimed album Made Of Rain in 2020.  They bring with them recently reformed Wasted Youth and Jah Wobble & Invaders Of The Heart as special guests.

From The Lexington to the Royal Albert Hall in a matter of days, as recently reformed ‘70s post punk outfit Wasted Youth take to this iconic stage it’s still quite early and the Hall is not yet half full – a lot of people are milling around in the various bars, oblivious. Meanwhile original members singer Ken Scott and guitarist Rocco Barker cut a striking contrast; Scott menacingly goth preacherman, with hat and walking stick, against Barker’s yellow ruffles and shades. Together with Ray ‘Sonic’ Hanson (Thee Hypnotics) on guitar, Hans Perrson (Flesh for Lulu) on drums, Barker’s wife TC (Miranda Sex Garden) on bass, and original member Nick Nicole on tambourine, they deliver their six song set loudly and efficiently; set highlights are Paris France and finale Do The Caveman, which in these civilised surroundings is missing a serious mosh pit and beer chucking. It’s a great set by a legendary band who predated and may well have been an influence on how The Jesus And Mary Chain looked and sounded some years later. Those who stayed in the bar instead of witnessing this missed something special.

Wasted Youth

Whether it’s the current line-up, which sees the Butler brothers surrounded by an intensely strong musicianship, the quality of the songs both old and new, or just their sheer energy, the Furs continue to be one of the UK’s most important bands, relevant just as much today as they were 40 years ago.

Personally, the arrival of Made Of Rain during the depression, solitude and anxiety of the first lockdowns in 2020 was a blinding ray of purple sunshine. When I first heard I Believe, with its dense wall of guitar pierced by resounding sax, I was totally confused because I thought it must be a track from Forever Now which I’d, surely impossibly, missed.  You’ll Be Mine, surely the best song on the album, effectively reached straight into our chests and grabbed at our then isolated hearts, Richard Butler reassuring and demanding compliance at the same time.

Roll on to 2022 and the Furs are finally here, with the tour that they’ve had to reschedule umpteen times due to Covid. The Royal Albert Hall is disappointingly not as full as it should be, presumably due to the lost dates, and the arena section is all-seated, guarded by strict security tasked with keeping enthusiastic fans back from the stage, but as the band weave their magic and the audience energy grows, these things become irrelevant and barely noticeable.

From the minute he strides onto the stage, Richard Butler holds us in the palm of his hand, with his passionate articulation of his clever lyrics with emphatic gestures and expressions and constant connection with the audience.  It’s really difficult not to watch only him. Dragging our eyes away, with him tonight are Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Amanda Kramer (keyboard), Mars Williams (sax) and Zack Alford (drums), plus original guitarist Roger ‘Dog’ Morris is back for some of the older tracks, with roadie guitar tech Denis also making an appearance.

The Psychedelic Furs

Interspersed are the new tracks: You’ll Be Mine fills the Hall with a wall of sound and it’s at this point that I first notice the drummer isn’t Paul Garisto.  Zack Alford from the States more than proves himself worthy of his Bowie/Springsteen/B52s pedigree, he’s like an octopus back there, driving us forward with impossible beats.   He again comes to the fore in Don’t Believe, reminiscent of the way The Cure’s Jason Cooper handles Burn: all eyes on him.

Ash Wednesday is one of a couple of songs (Wrong Train also) that sees Richard Butler moving softly into the vacuum left by David Bowie, his voice hypnotic and gently lulling us.  Amanda Kramer chimes in with gentle harmony – she’s an understated but crucial presence as always. Richard happens to be singing about the catastrophic end of a relationship, “…love lies murdered…”, and even if our relationship hasn’t just broken up we are still heartbroken.  And Richard is there to comfort us. At this point, this incredible song in this incredible venue, he could be singing about sandwich wrapping and we’d still be spellbound.

The forceful isolation of No One, with Tim Butler’s driving bass resonating off the Hall’s acoustic mushrooms (they really are called that), pushing the devastating point home, is stunning.  Rich Good’s guitar chimes in, there’s a thin shard of light across the gloom and we’re holding on for dear life.

This Will Never Be Like Love gives Mars Williams one of several opportunities to show off his extraordinary saxophone skills, although amazingly he tops even this in the encore in both Sister Europe, even upstaging the outrageous gyrating and pouting of Richard Butler, and somehow generating a ridiculously high note that has everyone gasping in India.

India is a genius and logical end to this incredible set – following Sister Europe, both taking us beyond the Hall’s curfew and back to the very beginning of this band’s journey. They’re spilling into the plush aisles, the security guards have given up, everyone’s on their feet, even in the corporate seats, and none of us want this perfect night in this amazing venue to end.

We dance upon the carpet floor And reel around

Great review of a great night. Thanks! Glad made it early for WY.

I was at the Manchester gig, as was John Robb and the equally famous Ged Duffy. This review applies 100% to that gig. Brilliant

Great night wasn’t it Chris!

Saw them in Bristol last night – totally mesmerising, what a gig!

Your fantastic review could equally apply to any of the other Furs gigs on this tour. They were excellent throughout and the sound quality has been amazing. Thank you for your review which gives them the credit that they deserve so very much.

The Psychedelic Furs bring “Made of Rain Tour”, to Academy 2 Manchester. 10/4/22

  • April 13, 2022
  • International Concert Reviews , UK Concert Reviews
  • by Paul Evans Photographer/Writer

WORDS AND IMAGES PAUL EVANS

‘On This Performance The Psychedelic Furs Continue To Be Such An Important Band And Are As Relevant Now As They Were 40 Years Ago’

It’s nearly 30 years since the Psychedelic Furs last studio recording and it’s thirty-six years since I was blown away by “The Ghost in You”, “Love My Way” and “India”. They were the quintessential New Wave band for me. Led by the brilliance of vocalist Richard Butler and his brother Tim on bass, they fused the crashing passion of post-punk, sardonic lyrics and Art School style over four gloriously creative albums. All perfect for a 16-year-old David Robert Jones fan in the mid 1980s. The Butler brothers are joined on this tour by long-time band members, guitarist Rich Good; keyboardist Amanda Kramer; Mars Williams on sax and newcomer Zack Alford on drums. Newcomer sounds a little underwhelming as Zack’s pedigree includes playing with Bowie for several years.

It’s 7.30pm, a quiet Manchester Sunday, early for a gig and not raining. It probably should be given the name of the headliners tour though. The Academy 2 is pleasantly full for the support bands, the recently re-formed and legendary Wasted Youth and the equally legendary Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls.

Active for only a brief spell in the early 80s, Wasted Youth produced a series of astounding post-punk singles. It’s a quick but spectacular set, blending early Goth and pure rock ‘n’ roll. Kens voice is stunning and guitarist Rocco twists beautiful feedback from his Gretsch on classic tracks “Jealousy” (Small Faces meets the Velvet Underground), “I wish I was a girl” (Bauhaus meets well, Wasted Youth) and set closer “(Do the) Caveman” (The Cramps meet, well Wasted Youth again). They all sounded as good tonight as they did when I danced to them back in the day.  The Invisible Girls were formally the backing band for Salford’s legendary John Cooper Clarke way back in 1980, a band which then included Martin Hannett, Vini Reilly, John Mayer and Bernard Sumner which is some pedigree. Pauline recorded an underrated gem of an album with them in 1980 and “Shoot You Down” and “Dream Sequence” were stunning tonight. Pauline’s voice and the band at the top of their game on a series of underrated new wave pop gems in another short set. There was an early curfew so I’m guessing this is why sets are fast and short so far.

The changeovers between bands are fast and hectic. As a drum kit is taken off the packed stage for the last time, I look round and noticed how full the room is. Having been name checked as influences by REM , The Killers , Foo Fighters and been lyrically sampled by The Strokes , it’s good to see that tonight’s packed crowd is a mixture of ages for tonights headliner, The Psychedelic Furs.

Electric blue lights the stage as the evocative keyboard intro to the cutting “Highwire Days” begins. Tim going to stage right jokingly cupping his ear for the crowds’ cheers. The hypnotic rhythm disturbed by screaming saxophone and the authoritative swagger of Richard as he bows, pushes up his sleeves and begins his vocals, gesturing his arms to passionately accentuate his words.  With a seasick rhythm and frictional saxophone, 1981 single, “Dumb Waiters” continues the slow tempo, likewise “You’ll Be Mine” from “Made of Rain”.  A wall of tribal sound perfectly interjects with eastern saxophone, subtle “Venus in Furs” keyboard and Richards flawless demanding vocal. The crowd are mostly motionless, mesmerised as Richard, standing still accentuates his vocals with dancing hands and arms. Max freely wanders the stage and Tim silently mouths the lyrics with his brother or enigmatically looks out into the crowd. Only three songs in and it’s difficult not to stand open-mouthed.

The tempo picks up with a stunning “Mr Jones”, the steam train beat snapping the crowd from temporary hypnosis. Richard is smiling and jumping on the spot as the sax screams and somehow occupies its own space within the songs sound. Not for the last time, the band are prowling the stage and the energy is remarkable.  “So good, so far” Richard sings. No truer words, I’ve never heard a better song played live ever. Period.

The new songs tonight are progressive and surrounded by passionately creative musicians are played to perfection. Highlights are the thunderous rhythm of the “The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll”; the driving bass and angular guitar of “No‐One”; the hypnotic vocals and gentle harmonies of “Ash Wednesday” and the extraordinary saxophone on “This’ll Never Be Like Love”. This is definitely not a going through the motions performance. Richard is still a fantastic showman throughout, jumping on the spot, crouching down to sing to the crowd, using hand gestures to accentuate his feelings. I capture him smiling to himself a couple of times too, he seems to be really enjoying it.  The band continue to stalk the stage, Max swapping Saxophone with percussion when needed, Tim resting his foot on the monitors leaning into the crowd. A further two guitarists were also swapping places on and off the stage. I’m not sure how they move so freely as a seven-piece on such a small stage.

There’s a cheer when the keyboard intro to the glorious “Ghost in You” begins and I feel a tear in my eye. It’s always been a perfect, perfect song and I murmur the words along with the crowd “Angels fall like rain” as Richard mimics falling rain with his hands. “Inside you, the time moves, and she don’t fade” continues the crowd. It’s been well worth the 38 year wait to hear this live. “Pretty in Pink” explodes around the room in a sea of pounding drums and guitar. The crowd jumping and singing “Isn’t sheeeee, Pretty in Pink?”, hands dancing in the air to the solo. “Love My Way” and “Heaven” are both delicate and utterly perfect showcasing Richards still extraordinary voice as he holds a seriously long note at the end of “Heaven”.  Blowing a kiss to the crowd he leaves the stage with the band to massive cheers before they return to where it all began playing two tracks from their debut LP.

“Sister Europe”, the traditional set opener is first, the bands homage to the Velvet Underground and Bowie. Max’s saxophone is outstanding once again. Someone in the crowd has been asking for “India” for a few songs now and it’s finally here. Richard tapping percussion in the songs slow build-up before it tribally detonates into a driving, angst ridden anthem. The saxophone, once again filling the sound space perfectly before the band leave to excessive cheers.

I’m finally hearing one of my favourite bands live and I don’t want the set to end to be honest. However, on this performance the Psychedelic Furs will continue to be such an important band and are as relevant now as they were 40 years ago so I should get to see them again really, really soon. You should too.

The Psychedelic Furs return to form in Glasgow

Photo of Raymond Thomson - Deputy Editor

The re-scheduled UK tour finally reached Glasgow as the band play their new album live to a near capacity crowd

After waiting nearly 30 years for a new studio album release, The Psychedelic Furs finally released their follow up album “Made of Rain” in 2020. Add on another 2 years to tour the new material and that must have felt like a lifetime to brothers Richard and Tim Butler, but their music has never been far from the limelight. Their music transcended genres after the self-titled critically acclaimed debut album was quickly followed by Talk Talk Talk. In fact, the band’s first four albums spawned a good number of radio friendly classics which have been extensively used not only by their peers either through influence or direct use, but the film industry which has drawn upon the bands back catalogue many times. Notably, the recent Netflix smash Stranger Things, used “Ghost in You” and of course the Hollywood Brat Pack movie named after the song “Pretty in Pink” made them a household name. Having formed during the post-punk era, the brothers broke ranks from any possibility of being pigeonholed as punk by using the word psychedelic. 2022 sees the band touring extensively through out the year and thankfully, the hunger to see live acts again will have the venues packed to celebrate the bands return to form.

It’s a family affair in Glasgow’s SWG3 as Pauline Murray is joined on stage with her long term partner and husband Robert Blamire and their Son Alex on Keyboards and Daughter Grace on Vocals. Best known for being the front woman of Penetration , where she and Robert first formed the band, the Durham duo have played live for over 45 years! The multi-room venue in Glasgow was near to capacity as Pauline and her band took to the stage. The stark, clean cut, well-lit venue also benefits from a great PA. This all bode well for the evening as both bands served up some great musicianship. The delay to the tour saw Murray release a new album after the original scheduled tour date. That album “Elemental” provided three songs for the set and Murray looked genuinely happy she was able to share them with the eager audience. Opening with “Sympathy”, Murray paced the stage and demonstrated her voice has stood the test of time as her distinctive voice was unwavering though out the night. The catchy chorus of “Shoot You Down” caught a few folks out in the crowd as they sang along before Murray explained that the new album had been released during the Covid lockdown as she introduced “Secrets”. Some delightful guitar and keyboard work were augmented by the joint vocals of Pauline and Grace. The down to earth Durham lass informed the crowd that it’s only the second time the band in its current guise had played these songs. She picked up her Acoustic for “Shadow in My Mind” another track from “Elemental” and it led into the final song “Weeds” from the afore mentioned album.

The subtlety in the delivery of music was grounded by Murrays melancholic delivery. The atmospheric “Drummer Boy” had a stark feel to it as the tom driven tribal drums came to the fore. “Thundertunes” was a particular highlight for me with the catchy riff and “Warning, Warning” resonating inside my head. Saving the best to last, the fitting “Judgement Day” was dedicated to Pauline’s iconic friend Jordan Mooney. A melancholic ending yet uplifting, the crowd gave a resounding cheer as the band took their leave.

There was already a feel good factor in the venue as The Psychedelic Furs took the stage. The atmospheric lighting set the scene as the relatively low key set opener “Highwire Days” reminded everyone of the halcyon days of the band when they were at the height of their popularity. The enigmatic Richard Butler breezed his way through the first song and sounded exactly as he did all those years ago when the band broke into the charts with their particular brand of post-punk art rock. His distinctive voice set the band apart. “Dumb Waiters” closely followed the opener and Mars Williams seminal sax solos would come to the fore throughout the set, stealing the limelight from the rest of the band as his dynamic dexterity was dumbfounding at times. The set lit up when “Mr Jones” blasted out of the PA. Butler proved he had lost none of his playful charismatic swagger as he subtly commanded attention throughout the night. Proving the band are no one trick pony, each of the musicians took their turn in stealing the spotlight. The sublime guitar work from Richard Good and the welcome return of Roger Morris to the band during “Wrong Train” was matched by the delightful keyboard work of Amanda Kramer on “Ghost in You”.

The newer material blended well into the set as the awkwardly engaging “Boy Who Invented Rock N Roll” preceded the infectious “No-One” both from the new album. The latter song wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a Cure album. More fantastic lead work from Richard Good. It was always going to feature at one point during the set so mid-set was as good as any. “Pretty in Pink” may not be as welcomed as it once was but the over played classic still warrants acclaim even if its to live vicariously through Mars Williams as he continued to mesmerise with his talent. The crowd certainly showed their appreciation as they gave the hit song a resounding cheer. The hit’s kept coming with “Love My Way” and “President Gas” which showed the decadent side to Richard Butler as his provocative arm stretched salute would lead into a cut throat movement then a slow disapproving shake of the head. A cynical reminder of what’s going on in Europe right now. Richard’s brother Tim never rested throughout the set as he continuously moved around the stage often staring down the audience and at times playfully pointing and beckoning to the crowd. The band seemed to move up a gear with their 80’s classic hit “Heaven”. The somewhat nostalgic crowd bounced into life as they sprang into action. The tempo was dropped slightly as “Heartbreak Beat” closed out the main set but there had to be an encore after such a great performance.

The Psychedelic Furs could never disappoint the long standing fans without playing two of their earliest iconic songs. The band returned to play “Sister Europe” and “India”. The former kicked off with that unmistakable drum beat faithfully reproduced by Zack Alford and the subtle guitar and sax. The crowd were in singalong mode and Butlers uncanny resemblance to Bowie at times brought back the memories of listening to the classic song as a teenager in my bedroom. The opening track of that first album ended the night. The sweeping guitar intro made way to the thumping bass before the band were back in full flow. More mesmerising melody from Mars as his sweet sounding sax courted the crowd.  It will be a bust 2022 as the band complete the UK tour before they head for the U.S.A.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS: Made of Rain 2022 Tour with Special Guests X

psychedelic furs uk tour 2022

The Psychedelic Furs may not have invented rock & roll per se, but their influence since arriving on the post-punk scorched-earth landscape four decades ago has reverberated and resonated among all those who cherish the sweet-and-sour spot where rawness and romanticism meet. Born out of the UK rock scene and led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premier bands at college and alternative radio scoring a multitude of major hits with “Love My Way,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Heaven,” “The Ghost In You,” and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing eight studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, a live concert DVD and inspiring one of the most iconic motion picture soundtracks of all time.   Their latest release “Made Of Rain” became the Furs’ second-highest charting UK Album ever and was prominently featured in the end of year “Best Albums” roundup in a multitude of publications worldwide. The Furs especially thrive live in concert having headlined the U.K.’s famed Glastonbury Festival, performing at sold out gigs at California’s Hollywood Bowl and continuing to tour quite regularly around the globe.

The Psychedelic Furs touring lineup remains Richard Butler (vocals); Tim Butler (bass); Rich Good (guitar); Mars Williams (saxophone); Amanda Kramer (keyboards) and Zachary Alford (drums).

Recent tour reviews

The venue was great. Even though I was towards the back of the theatre it was small enough that I was still comfortably close.

The opening act had a good voice but was very monotonous sounding. He only played about 40 minutes.

The Furs were awesome! They played most of the most well know songs and a few lesser known songs. I knew all but about 3. They sounded great and Richard Butler’s voice hasn’t changed.

I felt like I was transported back to my teenage days. My only complaint was that the Furs only played for an hour. But, my ticket was only $35+booking fees so it was a really inexpensive night of great entertainment. It left me giddy the rest of the night.

The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is a former church converted to music venue. It's a little small and seating was composed of folding chairs. The concession area was separated from the hall by a couple of curtains and there was a lot of noise from people at the concession area laughing and shouting during Royston Langdon's opening that was really distracting. Additionally, the speakers could have been toned down for the small size of the venue as the volume was on the verge of painful for those of us that were in proximity to the stage.

That said...

The show was fantastic. Royston Langdon opened and I was very impressed. His voice was amazing. I had never heard his music before and was pleasantly surprised by how good he was. He did a number of songs from his album 'Leeds' and finished his set with an absolutely beautiful cover of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity'.

What can I say about The Psychedelic Furs? I've seen several bands from the 80's in the past few years and been saddened by how much their lead singer's voices has deteriorated over the years.

That certainly isn't the case for The Psychedelic Furs. They sound just like they did back in the 80's. It's almost as if the past (almost 40!) years didn't exist. Lead singer Richard Butler's distinctive voice is more mature than it used to be but he basically sounds just like he did back in the heyday of the band. Richard danced and moved around the stage with all the energy and joyfulness of a 20-year-old which is amazing since he turns 63 in June!! He's still having fun and obviously loves what he does.

Guitarist Rich Good pumped out some blistering solos during the concert that brought back memories of going home with my ears ringing following concerts back in the 80's.

Saxophone player Mars Williams put on one hell of a show. Sax was present in so many of the 80's classic hits and Williams showed us the incredible sound that a true professional can wring out of the instrument. I brought my 17-year-old daughter to the show and she had never heard saxophone played live. She was wide-eyed and jaw dropped as he played through several solos. It was gratifying to introduce her to what a real band sounds like in this age of auto-tuned committee-produced junk.

Bottom Line: If you already love The Psychedelic Furs, you won't be disappointed. If you don't love them, go see them anyway, you'll learn to love them.

Absolutely delightful show. Even better than I had hoped it would be. The band was obviously having a blast performing, very energetic, animated and interactive with the audience, as well as one another.

And the lead singer was on point! Very personable and engaging, as well as professional. Had a great report with the crowd and chatted between songs.

Wonderful stage presence all around and a real treat to see live after all these years.

I would definitely see them again if I get the chance and will recommend them to anyone.

About the Artist

New wave icons the Psychedelic Furs, led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, first scored major hits with “Love My Way,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Heaven,” “The Ghost In You” and “Heartbreak Beat.”  Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US College and Modern Rock radio scoring a multitude of #1 singles.  With the advent of MTV in the early 80’s the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes’ approached the band with his film built around the Furs’ song “Pretty In Pink”, the band’s legacy was cemented. After a brief hiatus in the 90’s, and a side project called “Love Spit Love”, the band regrouped at the dawn of the new millennium. Their 2020 album, the first Psychedelic Furs album in 29 years, Made of Rain, proved they could still deliver epic and meaningful records.

The Psychedelic Furs: Made Of Rain 2022 Tour w/ X [Concert Review]

Brian Q. Newcomb | July 8, 2022 July 8, 2022 | Concert Reviews , Reviews

The Psychedelic Furs w/ X :  Made Of Rain 2022 Tour; Rose Music Center; Dayton, OH; Wednesday, July 6, 2022

As if special ordered for the day of The Psychedelic Furs “ Made of Rain ” tour’s arrival in Dayton, Wednesday was a dreary, rainy day at mid-afternoon, but by the time the opening act, legendary L.A. punk band X, hit the stage the sun was shining across the stage from the west. Back when the winter was starting to fade and we began hearing about expected summer tours, the pairing of British new wave artists The Psychedelic Furs with X seemed especially appropriate. The two acts started at about the same time in the late 70’s, had toured consistently here in the 2000’s and 2010’s, and both had released new albums in 2020 after an extended period with no new recorded music. While the audience for this pair of veteran rock artists was spirited and responsive the concert venue appeared to be less than half full, but that didn’t put a damper on either the performances from the stage or the experience of the faithful who came out for the show.

As The Psychedelic Furs took the stage, Richard Butler the band’s lead singer came to middle stage and bowed elegantly as if addressing royalty, as the veteran musicians that make up the current Furs’ line-up kicked off the raucous, rather direct and less-than-romantic “I Just Wanna Sleep With You.” Musically, the Furs sound while centered on Butler’s unique vocal delivery, is a rich, often complex and textured approach, driven on the throbbing rhythm of the band’s other original member, Butler’s brother Tim on bass, and the newest member, drummer Zack Alford. Then weaving the colorful sonic tapestry that gives The Psychedelic Furs its lush musicality are Mars Williams on saxophone, Amanda Kramer on keyboards and Rich Good on guitars. “Mr. Jones,” a crunchy, angry rocker about humanity in cultural decline, with Good’s guitars and Williams’ alto sax in tandem, creating a unique musical synergy.

While Butler and his vocals are clearly the central focus, and he’s a theatrical singer who often gestures with his hands and arms as if acting out the content of his lyrics, he barely spoke between songs beyond the occasional “thank you.” For instance, as the band dove into “You’ll Be Mine,” the first of 6 songs played from their new-ish album, “ Made of Rain ,” the Furs’ first studio album since 1991, he never once mentioned the record. This was one of those richly textured rockers, where there’s an underlying drone like quality, while the blend of soprano sax, various keys, and guitars produces a pleasing sound that somehow resembles a Scottish bagpipe set against the counterpoint of Alford’s propulsive Bo Diddley beat. Next up the punkish rant of the band’s early track, “Dumb Waiters,” with intense solos from both Good and Williams. Butler seemed a bit disenchanted with “The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll,” only singing the first of the verses then waiting for the instrumental to segue into “Wrong Train,” two from the new album. The latter’s big guitar sound, requiring a road crew member to join in with a second electric guitar, allowing Good room for a spirited guitar solo while Butler gave the song’s lyrics a dramatic reading.

For “Imitation of Christ,” which goes all the way back to the band’s 1980 debut, one of many of the Furs’ songs that relies on religious imagery, Butler routinely extended his arms to imitate hanging from a cross. The lush instrumental section allowed for longer, more expressive solos from Williams and Good. Stuck in the rear behind her keyboards while Butler and the three other players out front roamed the stage freely, Kramer’s contribution on synths is integral to the Furs’ sound, and her melodic presence broke through with the somewhat floaty melody of “The Ghost In You,” one of the band’s bigger hits on this side of the Atlantic. Another example where Butler let the songs do the talking came next, with “President Gas,” a song written all the way back in 1982 that feels especially prescient given the political turmoil of the last 6 years. The song featured a rock & roll style sax solo and some screaming guitar work from Good.

Next up was “Pretty in Pink,” an early hit that got a second life through the John Hughes film of the same name. It featured Kramer’s keyboards more central in the mix, with a brief solo, and a big melodic pop-oriented solo from Williams on sax. Next, came three songs from “ Made of Rain ,” all without introduction – “This’ll Never Be Like Love,” “No-One,” and “Ash Wednesday.” The first was a melodramatic ballad, the second mentions “sirens,” which seemed to fuel the creative drama in solos from Good and Williams while Kramer’s keyboards rang out like church bells. Butler led the band into the final songs of the set, choosing some of the bigger hit singles, the synth-driven pop of “Love My Way,” and the band’s breakout MTV hit, “Heaven,” which closed out the set.

The band quickly returned to encore with “Heartbreak Beat,” perhaps the band’s most definitive single, Butler pounding out the rhythm with his hand on his chest, bowing in a curious cross-legged crouch to greet fans down front. Then they ended the evening with the somewhat exotic “India,” with more of that droning Eastern musical influence against the driving beat of Tim Butler on bass and Alford on drums. The lush textures of the band’s musical preferences came to the surface, with Williams offering a sax solo with a long, theatrically held note. Richard Butler offered another low, majestic bow like the one he gave at the beginning of the night and was off the stage before the band brought the song to a close.

Remarkably, X continues on with it’s original four members – John Doe, Exene Cervenka, D.J. Bonebrake and Billy Zoom. On Wednesday night, Zoom came out with the road manager before the 8 o’clock start time, tuned up his Gretsch hollow-body electric guitar (like the tribute model named after him in 2008), and pulled up a bar stool before the rest of the band hit the stage. Zoom dealt with bladder cancer in 2015, and despite playing the first 3/4’s of the set from his stool, he played with all the dexterity and musicality we’ve come to expect. Zoom’s rockabilly guitar style meshed with the folk/rock songs and unique vocal harmonies of Exene and Doe, often sped up to a fast punk rhythm by Bonebrake tends to define X’s memorable style. They opened the set with the first track from their iconic debut album, “ Los Angeles ,” “Your Phone’s Off the Hook, But You’re Not.” Exene in a Western dress and cowboy boots, wearing a jacket with the band’s “X” design on the back of her jacket in glittering stones, singing lead on the verses, joined by Doe on the choruses. They switched roles on “Free” a song from the band’s 2020 release, “ALPHABETLAND.” They followed it with “Breathless,” an old school rock & roll number by Otis Blackwell, which became associated with rock & roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis.

“The Hungry Wolf” followed with a drum break in the middle with a fun solo from Bonebrake, then on the title track of “ALPHABETLAND” followed, Doe playing the fast bassline, and the band joined by auxiliary player Craig Packham on acoustic guitar. “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes,” a song originated in the 20’s swing era was  delivered with a bit of a surf beat, and a bit of a weepy, sad Mariachi song feel in Zoom’s guitar solo. Doe introduced Exene’s “Come Back to Me” as a slow dance song, suggesting that if the outdoor shed had a mirror ball it would come in handy. Packham moved over to drums freeing up Bonebrake to move to play vibes, while Zoom played a sad sounding sax solo. Doe described “I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts” as a sing-along with only one line repeated, to which Zoom added a jazzy guitar solo, before Bonebrake played an elegant melodic solo on the vibes, and when Zoom stepped forward to play his sax attached to a microphone stand, I noticed he had stuck his guitar pick to his sweaty forehead. Necessity is truly the mother of invention.

Returning the drum kit, Bonebrake played the fast drum roll intro to “Water & Wine,” again Exene and Doe’s organic vocal harmonies defining the lyric, while Zoom takes a solo rich with his natural rockabilly leanings. “Adult Books” feels a bit like old school rock & roll at the front end, “Beyond and Back” was based on another rockabilly riff, then Doe said “this one’s about our hometown,” launching into the punk anthem and title track of the band’s debut, “Los Angeles.” At this point Packham returned to pick up his acoustic, but Doe shook him off, and the band leaned into the heavier rocker, “Nausea,” Zoom rising up for the rest of the set starting with “Johny Hit and Run Pauline,” legs spread on the punchy rockabilly rocker. They moved quickly into the fast punk original “Motel Room in My Bed,” and then quickly closed the set with fast, supercharged cover of the Doors’ “Soul Kitchen,” which also came from the band’s debut.

psychedelic furs uk tour 2022

As X finished up their strong set, Exene told the excited crowd, “We love you very much, and it’s nice to see you again.” Now 45 years into their legacy, the four original members of X alive and kicking it in their 60’s, Richard and Tim Butler also from that same generation, these two different bands with vital new music to share; it’s a good thing to see and hear these bands in 2022. There’s a saying that “living well is the best revenge.” Revenge for what, I’m not sure, but I couldn’t agree more.
