Intex Excursion Pro Kayak Review: Is It Worth the Money?

Kayaking is an excellent way to enjoy the great outdoors, and the Intex Excursion Pro Kayak is a perfect option for those looking for a durable and easy-to-use inflatable kayak.

In my Intex Excursion Pro Kayak review, I will go over my personal experience on the water with the product, including its benefits and drawbacks.

I purchased two of the Intex Excursion Pro Kayaks on Amazon for a family vacation to the lake. I picked this particular model since it was on sale for a great price and had 2 seats so a couple people could go out at a time.

Setting it up was straightforward, and I was pleased to see that the package included everything we needed, from paddles to a high-output pump.

We found the kayak to be incredibly sturdy and durable, even when we were in rougher water with the wind blowing against us.

The adjustable bucket seats and floor-mounted footrests were comfortable, providing us with support throughout our long day on the lake. We were also pleased with the ample storage space, which allowed us to bring along our supplies.

However, we did notice a few limitations. The included carry bag felt flimsy and not very durable, and we had concerns about how long it would last.

Additionally, the paddles were a bit short, which made paddling occasionally uncomfortable. Finally, the rod holders were not very functional, although we found creative ways to use them.

The Intex Excursion Pro Kayak Series comes with everything you need to get started on the water, making it an excellent starting kit for beginners.

The package includes not only the kayak itself but also a strong pump, two 86-inch aluminum oars, and a carry bag for easy transport.

There are two removable skegs for deep and shallow waters, two floor-mounted footrests, two integrated recessed fishing rod holders, and two adjustable bucket seats.

It also comes with a removable and adjustable mounting bracket for additional accessories, such as GPS systems, fish finders , and swivel fishing rod holders.

The Intex Excursion Pro Kayak Series is built to last, with a super tough laminate PVC construction and a polyester core that makes it lightweight yet highly resistant to damage from abrasion, impact, and sunlight.

The high-pressure inflation provides extra rigidity and stability, while the high-pressure spring-loaded valves make inflation and deflation fast and easy.

The kayak also features 3-ply super tough construction that employs a high molecular PVC that is unaffected by gasoline, oil, and saltwater, making it highly durable and resistant to damage.

The Intex Excursion Pro Kayak Series is designed for maximum comfort and convenience, with plenty of storage space in the bow and stern and stainless steel D-rings for tying down dry bags and gear.

The kayak features two adjustable bucket seats that provide ample support for comfortable all-day paddling. It also includes footrests that provide genuine support for strong paddling, and inflatable seats that are comfortable even after paddling for around 3 hours.

It’s weight capacity can hold up to 400 pounds, making it suitable for solo paddling or for paddling with a partner or child, and still having gear the kayak.

The Intex Excursion Pro Kayak Series is an excellent performer on the water, with great stability, tracking, and maneuverability.

The kayak comes equipped with two removable skegs for deep and shallow waters, allowing for excellent tracking and maneuverability. The body is very rigid and shows no flex even when rocked by good wake, while the boat tracks very well and turns quickly when needed.

With a strong paddle, it is possible to turn in place and never run into anything uncontrollably. The kayak is also pretty light and easy to maneuver, making it great for use in a variety of water conditions.

The Intex Excursion Pro Kayak Series is a highly upgradable and customizable kayak that can be easily modified to suit your individual needs and preferences.

Finally, the bow and stern could benefit from additional webbing or tie-downs to secure gear, as there are only foot space and aft space for secure storage.

However, these minor issues are easily remedied with a little creativity and additional customization.

Despite a few minor drawbacks, it offers excellent value for its price and is a great option for those looking for an inflatable kayak that is easy to set up and use.

The Intex Excursion Pro is the manufacturer’s latest inflatable kayak on the market. At first glance it looks very similar to the Intex Explorer K2 . The differences are not only in the design, but especially in the material and equipment as well as in the accessories. With the Excursion Pro, Intex has a much higher quality inflatable kayak in its range than the Intex Explorer or Challenger . In this review we would like to show you whether the extra cost is worth it and the strengths and weaknesses of the kayak.

The kayak has some of the features of a fishing kayak . However, we will not go into these features in this review, as we are not anglers ourselves.

Set-up and first impressions

The Intex Excursion Pro comes with a very large carrying case. Compared to the bags of other Intex boats it is coated and much more stable. With this bag we do not have the feeling that it will tear or get a hole after a few uses. The dimensions of the bag are very large. But that makes sense. Because usually you never get the boat folded up as compactly as it was when delivered. This also gives you the possibility to get the boat into the bag a bit untidily folded (in case you are in a hurry).

As usual with Intex, the boat is offered in a complete set. In addition to the larger and more robust carrying bag, there is a larger double action air pump for fast inflation of the kayak and two plug-in double paddles. In addition to the other Intex inflatable kayaks, the following accessories are included in the delivery:

• Valve key to tighten the valves
• good repair kit
• foot brace for the front and rear paddler
• manometer to check the correct air pressure
• inflatable seat pad for a higher seating position in the boat
• several fishing rod holders
• one skeg each for shallow and deep water (instead of a general skeg)

We can already say that the additional accessories are a useful addition.

Meanwhile, Intex has replaced the bag with a lightweight transport backpack with padded shoulder straps. This makes the kayak much more comfortable to transport, for example, if you go by train or bus to the lake or river.

Although the manual says that the boat should be built on a surface without stones and other sharp objects, we did not quite stick to it. If the boat skin would not withstand these small stones, we would like to know that. Of course we don’t want to force any damage, but the boat skin inspires confidence, because it is not just a PVC skin. The boat skin consists of a polyester fabric coated on both sides with PVC. In case of damage, the boat skin can be mended with the enclosed repair kit.

First the bottom and then the side chambers are inflated. The bottom and the side chambers are separate from each other, i.e. each air chamber also has its own valve. This multi-chamber system is common on inflatable boats in order not to sink in case of a hole on the water.

Inflating works well with the supplied pump. Admittedly, the air pump is nevertheless quite small and not very robust. Also the stand is very small. But that is not surprising. You should not expect miracles from the included accessories, especially not if they are in the scope of a cheap complete set.

As soon as the air chamber reaches its final shape, check the air pressure with the supplied manometer. The chambers can be inflated up to 0.08 bar (1.16 PSI). This is not much for an inflatable kayak, but a little more than for the Intex Challenger K2 and Explorer K2 . If you have been on the water with the boat for a longer time, you should check the air pressure during a break on the shore. If the air and water temperature are significantly different, the air pressure in the chambers will drop and they will become slightly softer. But this is quite normal for an inflatable boat and here it helps to pump up. In the case of inflatable boats with a higher pressure (e.g. Gumotex or Grabner), this effect is not that significant.

We found the handling of the valves less good. It is a little tricky to open and close the valve spring. The valve spring is covered with a screw cap, so that the valve is not accidentally opened on the water. The cap is only attached with a very thin string.

Inflatable kayaks generally have the disadvantage compared to fixed hull kayaks that they have a worse directional stability. Therefore a fin can be attached to most inflatable kayaks to improve the directional stability. With our model we unfortunately had to find out that the fin holder is not attached straight. The sloppy mounting of the fin holder is annoying, because it will make the kayak even worse in terms of directional stability.

Both the foot braces and the seats can be placed in different positions in the boat. For the foot brace there are 3 positions each for the front and rear paddler. You can also fix the seat variably to the ground with a long velcro strip. Especially the foot braces surprised us, because something like that is not common in this price class.

Since we are quite tall, we use the whole interior space to place the seats and foot braces. The backrests of the seats are attached by two belts, each of which can be fastened to the side chamber with a plastic carabiner.

At the bow and stern there is a small spray deck each. A wave from the front (e.g. from a passing boat) would still get into the boat because the spraydeck is sagging downwards.

The spraydeck is primarily used to attach the carrying handles. The boat is equipped with a robust carrying handle at both the front and the back, so that two people can carry the boat. The carrying handles make a robust impression. Unfortunately the opening of the carrying handles is a bit too narrow for big and strong hands.

There are also small safety lines at the front and back of the outer edge of the boat. These are quite practical to pull the boat ashore. In addition to the D-rings, which are used to secure the backrests, there are two more D-rings in the front and in the back for securing equipment (e.g. the belt of a dry bag).

On closer inspection, we could not find any processing errors or unclean spots in the gluing, apart from the skeg holder.

In the scope of supply an additional seat cushion is included, which can be placed under one of the seats. The seat cushion increases the sitting position and is intended for children or very small persons, so that it’s easier to put the paddle blade into the water.

Review of the Intex Excursion Pro on the water

The Intex Excursion Pro has robust carrying handles, so that the kayak can be carried well to water together with another person. However, the low air pressure is noticeable when carrying it. Although the kayak is not very long for a 2-person inflatable kayak, it hangs noticeably when being carried. If you paddle the kayak slo and have to carry it around on river tours, you definitely need a canoe trolley in our opinion.

The open construction of the kayak allows easy access to the kayak. Nevertheless, the bottom chamber gives way noticeably when entering the kayak. If you use the deep-water fin, you should only enter the kayak when the water depth is sufficient.

Due to the variable placement of the seats, you can paddle it solo as well. In the following photo you can see that the effective length of the boat on the water, i.e. the waterline, is much shorter than the total length of the boat. The reason is that the weight is mainly concentrated in the middle of the boat. Nevertheless, the Excursion Pro can be paddled without problems with a deep water fin. The speed and the directional stability as a 1-person kayak are alright for short trips.

The seat cushion is high enough so that you don’t have to sit in the wet if water (e.g. splashes when paddling or waves from a passing boat) gets into the boat. The backrest gives only limited support and makes a rather unstable impression. When paddling it supports only a small area of the lower back. If we lean into it properly, it bends away to the back.

Cheap inflatable kayaks rarely have a foot brace. A foot brace not only gives you a much better hold when paddling. A foot brace also makes paddling easier overall. Since the feet and therefore your torso have a better hold in the boat, you can get the necessary power for the paddle stroke mainly from your upper body instead of your arms. This makes you less tired when paddling. However, since cheap inflatable kayaks are not designed for long paddling anyway, many of them come without a foot brace.

Although the Intex Excursion Pro is only designed for short and comfortable trips due to its low air pressure, wide and yet quite short hull for a 2-person kayak, the foot braces are a nice feature as long as the paddlers are not too tall. For each seating position in the boat (front and back as a 2-person kayak and in the middle as a 1-person kayak) there are 3 positions each for the foot brace.

For tall paddlers the foot braces are rather unsuitable on longer trips. Because even when the foot braces is attached in the outermost loops, we have to bend our legs too much when using the foot braces (see photo below). For short tours this is not a big issue. On half or day tours, however, it becomes uncomfortable. For small persons the foot braces can be a nice support to find enough hold in the boat.

If you are paddling the boat solo and are tall, we recommend that you use the front bottom loops (which are actually intended for the 2-person configuration). Apart from the footrest, the interior offers plenty of room for a solo paddler.

In contrast to the 1-person use, the kayak with a 2-person configuration lies much better in the water. Also in comparison to the other Intex kayaks there have been some improvements. The directional stability are noticeably better due to the length of the boat, the air chambers have become somewhat more dimensionally stable and the maximal load capacity has increased by 20 kg. A speed of 3.1 – 3.4 km/h is quite realistic. The interior is spacious enough to provide enough room for two large paddlers.

The double-bladed paddles (with a length of 218 cm / 2’2”) are well designed for the kayak and for the average paddling beginner, but too wobbly for longer tours. Unlike other portable double-bladed paddles, it’s made not only of 2 or 4 pieces, but even 5 pieces. This increases the compactness of the paddle, but at the same time reduces the stability. For intensive use the plug system of the paddle shafts seems to wear out quickly, which would make the paddles even wobblier in the long run.

For occasional and small paddling trips on the water, the paddles are still useful. Nevertheless, the paddles show that the complete set is only designed for occasional and short paddling trips.

After a two-hour paddle tour with numerous landings on the shore, the kayak remained unharmed. The stress on the boat skin and on the boat itself were comparatively low in our review. There were good conditions (no wind) and the lake had only gravel banks. This is exactly what we consider the boat suitable for. In our opinion, the kayak is not the best choice for river tours with possible ground contact as well as half or day tours on lakes.

Dismantling the kayak

If there is water in the boat, the drain opening in the stern can be used before dismantling the kayak. This way you make sure that most of the water can drain out of the boat. To do this, tilt the boat at the front and the water in the boat will run out of the drain opening. You only have to wipe the interior dry without taking out the water with a sponge. The boat skin can also be wiped dry easily. The seats on the other hand have a slightly fabric-like coating that cannot be wiped dry. These should let air dry.

The air went out of the air chambers without much effort and the boat let was easy to fold up so that it fit back into the bag. However, the folded boat did not reach the original pack size.

Strengths and weaknesses of the Intex

It is difficult to identify a concrete strength of the kayak. For a inflatable kayak in the lower price range it has reasonable dimensions and comes with a lot of useful accessories. Due to its generous dimensions the kayak offers much more space inside than comparable kayaks in the price range. The directional stability and the performance on the water is good for comfortable tours on lakes and rivers.

Nevertheless, from our point of view, the Intex Excursion Pro is a beginner inflatable kayak for occasional use. The air chambers are not stiff enough due to the low air pressure, the backrests do not give enough support when paddling on longer tours and the paddles are too wobbly. The boat skin is much more robust than the Intex Challenger or Explorer. But it does not look as robust as the skin of a Gumotex or Grabner inflatable kayak.

+ easy assembly and dismantling + robust and large carrying bag included + more robust boat skin than other Intex inflatable boats + good driving characteristics (good compromise between speed, manoeuvrability and directional stability) + complete set – also suitable for anglers + enough interior space – very good manometer + useful equipment (e.g. additional D-rings, safety line, handles, seat elevation, …)

Disadvantages

– wobbly kayak paddles – fin holder was not correctly attached for our model – front and rear spray covers offer almost no protection against splash water and smaller waves – no luggage net – low air pressure and therefore soft air chambers- a lot of packaging waste (each part was individually packed in plastic bags) – bulky packing size considering the boat dimensions – foot braces are unsuitable for tall people

Conclusion on the Intex Excursion Pro

The Intex Excursion Pro is a successful further development with numerous improvements of the previous Intex inflatable kayaks and goes in the right direction. We had called the Intex Challenger and Explorer more bathing boats than kayaks. With the Intex Excursion Pro we see it the other way around. But it is definitely not a touring kayak either, it is much more a recreational kayak for occasional use. The running characteristics were better than expected, especially when the kayak is paddled by two persons. Two paddlers give the boat more drive. Also, the higher weight and better weight distribution increases the waterline of the boat. However, our afternoon review cannot conclude how durable and robust the kayak is in the long run.

Recommended Kayaking Equipment

The Intex Challenger Excursion Pro already includes a paddle and pump. However, you definitely need to get a life jacket. You also want to consider a dry bag and a proper transport bag for the inflatable kayak.

Accessories for the Intex Challenger K1

The scope of delivery of the boat includes the following accessories:

• Kayak paddle
• Inflatable foot brace
• Repair patches
• Transport bag

In addition, we recommend the following accessories:

• Life jacket: Itiwit BA 50N+ * (good life jacket for beginners, very good price-performance ratio, more details in our test report).
• Dry Bag: Itiwit dry bag 10L* (ideal for protecting items from splashing water and short immersion in water, good workmanship, with carrying strap, available in different colors and sizes)
• Transport backpack: only a bag is included, which is intended for storage and short transport of the kayak to the water. If you want to transport the kayak longer distances and more comfortably to the water, we recommend the Itiwit transport backpack*, which is comfortable to carry and has enough space for the kayak and accessories.

Alternatives to the Intex Excursion Pro

There are many other manufacturers, which make also great inflatable kayaks. Sea Eagle for example is very well-known in the US and they have a very wide range of inflatables. The Sea Eagle 420X comes with a drop-stitch floor and is available in a complete set (paddles, air pump, bag). It’s more expensive than the Excursion Pro but you will also get more for your money.

If you look for another affordable kayak, then the Itiwit x100+ might be a good kayak for you as a beginner. It’s a well-designed boat with good materials and quality but due to the hull the driving performance isn’t outstanding. It’s a good leisure boat for slow and comfortable tours on calm waters.

But if performance on the water is important to you, then you should check out kayaks from Advanced Elements. They have some really good boat, which can compete with solid kayaks.

it’s not primarily designed for sea kayaing. Since the Intex Exploroer Pro doesn’t have any wave/splash water protection, you should only use it on the coast when the water is very calm. Make sure to wear a PFD and to wash the kayak with fresh water after your paddling tour.

The Excursion Pro is arguably Intex’s best product. It has a lot of things going for it: it comes with a barrage of accessories, the material is semi-tough, it tracks reasonably well, and is stable. However, it has several cons, and comes with a short 90-day warranty. If you can find it for under $280, it is worth considering.

Putting “Pro” into the name of a product is a bold and aggressive statement, so I wanted to review the Excursion Pro kayak and see if it deserves the title in its name?

I bought the K2 (tandem) version of the kayak as a gift for my nephew, but I asked him to let me use it as well. Call me “Uncle of the Year” 🙂

Here is my full review of the Intex Excursion Pro inflatable kayak after using it a few times.

Features of the Excursion Pro kayak

The Excursion Pro is the latest inflatable kayak from Intex (released in 2019), and represents the top-of-the-line offering in their inflatable boat/kayak business.

But Intex isn’t exactly known for quality, which isn’t helped by their extremely short 90-day product warranty.

Nevertheless, this kayak has a lot of things going for it. If you can find it for around $270-$280, it is worth considering.

Price check – Excursion Pro

The body of the Excursion Pro kayak is made of a polyester fabric core with laminated PVC on both sides, creating a 3-ply 30 gauge material. Intex says that it uses “high molecular PVC”, whatever that may mean.

It feels pretty rugged, much thicker than the Intex Explorer. You can safely take your dog with you in the Excursion Pro.

The kayak is made up of 3 air chambers:

• Two side chambers
• Floor chamber

You inflate the bottom chamber first, then the ones on the sides. Each compartment is separated, so if one of them punctures out on the water, you still have air in the other ones to stay afloat and make it to shore.

The  floor of the Excursion Pro is an I-beam , which is typical of kayaks in this category. It is firm enough to sit in without much sagging, but you won’t stand up in it. 

The  valves  are spring-loaded Halkey-Roberts valves in functionality, but not official Halkey Roberts valves. My regular pump nozzle would not fit. You have to use the Intex-provided pump to inflate the kayak, which is a bit bothersome. If the hose of the supplied pump fails, you need to replace it with an Intex-specific one.

There’s a screw cap covering the valve spring to keep the valves from accidentally opening while on the water, but that also makes opening and closing the valves for inflation and deflation a bit harder.

The Intex Excursion Pro  weighs 39 lbs , making it easy to transport in and out of the water. It is 5 lbs heavier than the Sea Eagle 370, a comparable kayak in the category.

The kayak has  front and rear spray covers  to keep water from splashing into the boat, but there is a design flaw. There is no ledge to the spray covers, so water will get in because they sag downwards a bit. 

The Excursion Pro has 4 D-rings installed, 2 in the front and 2 in the back.

It also has fore and aft carry handles, as well as safety ropes.

Fishing features

The kayak has 2 built-in fishing rod holders . I didn’t use the Excursion Pro for fishing, but I could see that the rod holders lean inward. If you had 2 fishing rods, they would cross each other, rendering the rod holders incapable of performing their job . What you could do though, is bridge a pipe between the rod holders, and mount Scotty rod holders onto the pipe.

The package also comes with a fishing mounting bracket , that is situated right in front of you. If you go fishing, you can mount various accessories onto the bracket, such as your GPS or fish finder. The mounting bracket will be useful if you go fishing, since you won’t have to bother with glueing your mounting systems onto the hull.

You also get a seat booster , which raises your seat while fishing, giving you a higher vantage point to cast. It’s a thoughtful touch.

However, the soft I-beam floor and the inflatable seats are not that great for fishing. I would build a hard floor for the kayak, if your main goal with it is to fish.

Paddling performance and tracking

The Excursion Pro has  surprisingly good paddling performance and directional stability . The included skegs do their job nicely. In fact, the package comes with  2 skegs  that can you can swap. The smaller skeg is for shallow water, and the larger one is for deeper water.

It is not the fastest of inflatable kayaks, but I felt that good maneuverability makes up for it.

Reading other people’s reviews of the Intex Excursion Pro, it seems that sometimes the fin holder on the bottom is not glued on straight. This was not the case on our kayak. It was perfectly aligned.

The K2 package comes with two paddles that break down into 5 pieces. The K1 version only comes with one paddle. 

Unfortunately, the “Pro” in the name of the package does not apply to the 86″ paddles, don’t expect much from them. They are for beginners, so if you’ve used proper “pro” paddles before, these will be a disappointment. You should probably replace them, it will make a world of difference. 

Also, I’m not too fond of the fact that the paddles break down into five pieces. I understand that it makes them more compact, but it also makes them more flimsy when assembled. Two or three-piece paddles are firmer and nicer to use.

The Excursion Pro seats are quite comfortable on short trips, considering the fact they’re inflatable. There is a Velcro strip to fix it to the floor and vary its position.

The back support is adequate.

You also get a footrest that can you can adjust in 3 positions. I am 6′ tall (185 cm), the furthest position is about right for me.

Accessories

You get a LOT of goodies with this kayak. I’ve never seen so many accessories included in a kayak kit.

And the great part is that the monster-sized carry bag will fit everything, and then some. Whenever in a hurry, you’ll enjoy how the boat fits in nicely, even when not folded neatly. It also seems like it is of good quality, so hopefully, it won’t tear for a few years.

The  boat arrives in a complete set . Apart from the carry bag, you get everything you need to hit the water. 

Here’s a list of the accessories included in the Intex Excursion Pro package:

• Dual-action pump with inflate/deflate feature
• 86″ paddles
• fishing mounting bracket
• Valve key, for tightening air valves
• Footrest for both ends of the rear paddler
• 1 removable seat booster
• Inflatable seats
• 2 fishing rod holders
• 2 skegs (shallow water and standard)
• Manometer (pressure gauge)

Intex Excursion Pro assembly and disassembly

Inflation is a breeze, thanks to the valves and the double-action air pump. The kayak inflates to 0.08 bar (about 1.1 PSI). It will take no more than 7-8 minutes to assemble the entire kayak.

The kit comes with a pressure gauge you can use to check the air pressure in the tubes. The gauge also has a button on it to let the air out while the device is still in the valve, making it easier to adjust the pressure.

You can also check pressure at various intervals during your kayak trip; you can do that when you come up to the shore.

The Excursion Pro is easy to take apart as well. The material dries quickly, so you don’t need to take it out again at home and dry it if you had to pack up quickly.

There is a drain opening in the stern to drain out any water that is in the cockpit . Just tilt the boat backward and let the water run out. From that point, it’s easy to wipe the kayak dry.

The spring-loaded air valves will let the air out quickly. 

You can even use the air pump to suck out any air left in the tubes, but I didn’t feel the need to do that.

The air valves are in the back of the boat. Make sure you start folding it from the front, so the air valves are free to let out any air that is still in the tubes.

Intex Excursion Pro technical specifications

You might not know that there are 2 versions of the kayak:

• a solo paddler version (K1)
• a tandem (two-person) version (K2)

When you look at the details of the Intex Excursion Pro K1 vs K2, you can see that the only difference is that the K1 is shorter.

I really think that if you’re going to buy this brand of kayak, it should be the K2.

You can make good use of the extra space even when you’re paddling solo. The only reason you would need the shorter K1 is if you needed the extra maneuverability that a shorter kayak can provide on rapids. But if you’re buying something for whitewater rafting, it shouldn’t be this boat.

What other Excursion Pro users say

When you visit the Amazon product page of the kayak here , you’ll see that it has thousands of reviews.

The kayak has a 4.4 aggregate rating (May, 2024), which is very high.

Browsing through the written reviews, a few common themes are clear:

• The Excursion Pro is easy and quick to inflate with the included hand pump, and people find the pressure gauge helpful.
• There is plenty of legroom in the kayak for 2 people and gear (or a cooler).
• The included paddles are not of great quality, but they do their job.
• The built-in fishing rod holders lean inward, and the fishing rods cross. This makes the holders unusable with 2 fishing rods. Fishermen end up mounting extra rod holders onto the mounting bracket to circumvent this.
• People that get faulty kayaks have problems contacting Intex and warranty claims.

The last point above is worrisome.

I would suggest you take it out of the box as soon as you get it, inflate it and leave it inflated for a few days. Make sure there are no air leaks. You don’t have much time to send it back, and it looks like contacting the company can be problematic.

Intex Excursion Pro vs Explorer K2

When you see the Excursion Kayak for the first time, it looks similar to the Explorer K2. Not color-wise, but overall.

However, a closer look will reveal that things are very different.

The Excursion Pro is much tougher and made of better parts than the Explorer K2 . It feels more rigid as well, 

It also comes with extra accessories that you won’t find on the Explorer, such as standard and shallow water skegs, a pressure gauge, fishing rod holders, foot braces, etc.

Also, the valves on the Excursion kayak are Halkey Roberts-type valves, while the Explorer has Boston Valves. Halkey Roberts are more advanced valves, but Boston valves also get the job done.

With the improved design and construction material, the Excursion Pro is the highest-quality kayak ever from Intex. 

Intex Excursion Pro vs Sea Eagle 370/330

Many people compare the Excursion Pro with the Sea Eagle 370.

The two kayaks are similar in price, but there are a lot of differences:

• Thickness : The PVC of the Sea Eagle 370 is about 30% thicker than the Excursion Pro, making the Sea Eagle more rugged.
• Whitewater rating : Partly due to the above, the Sea Eagle is rated for Class III whitewater. The Intex is not rated for whitewater.
• Capacity : The Sea Eagle 370 has a capacity of 295 kg, vs the K2’s capacity of 180 kg.
• Warranty : The Sea Eagle has a 3-year warranty, vs the 90-day warranty of the Excursion Pro.
• Accessories : The Excursion Pro comes with way more accessories.
• Tracking and paddling : Both kayaks have plastic skegs, they perform about the same.

As you can see, in terms of quality, Sea Eagle beats Intex by a mile.

If you are looking for a beginner kayak to maybe do some touring in, the Sea Eagle is a better choice as it is more rugged, and has a larger capacity.

However, if you need all the accessories that come with the Intex Excursion Pro for fishing, it may just be a better choice.

Is the Intex Excursion Pro worth it?

It is worth it if you can buy the Intex Excursion Pro for around $250-280 . It comes with a bunch of accessories, and it performs well enough to make it on my list of the best kayaks of 2024 .

I’ve noticed that pricing can fluctuate greatly though. Post-Covid logistical issues around the world have caused the price of this kayak to soar to $399 plus tax for a while, but now the price has dropped back down. It is not worth $400, especially considering that it has a short 90-day warranty.

The manufacturer – Intex

The company that makes the Mariner inflatable raft is  Intex . It was founded in 1997, and is based out of California. During the years, it has grown to sell its products in over 100 countries.

Intex manufactures many types of inflatable products, from air beds to pools to toys to boats.

It’s good to know that they do provide support for their products, unlike far-eastern “brands”. You can buy replacements part directly on their site. So remember, if you ever lose the Boston valve cover, you can order  replacements  from Intex directly.

Warranty period

The Excursion Pro kayak has a 90-day limited warranty, which is very short.

Make sure you test the kayak at home right after you receive it.

Opinion of the Intex Excursion Pro

Apart from a few design misses, the Excursion Pro is a good kayak for casual use in lakes and mild rivers. It’ll give you longer service than other Intex boats, however, take note of the warranty period; it’s only 90 days long.

If you can find it at a good price (around $280), I say go for it. Otherwise, have a look at the Sea Eagle 370 instead .

Borrowed the Kayak from a friend. Turned out the pump was missing. Spend a whole weekend trying to find a pump so we could use the Excursion pro. The link you provide for intex parts does not carry the pump with the Halkey Roberts hose in other words you loose the pump the kayak is trash.

Just took mine out this past Fathers Day weekend. I would say, it’s not so much the pump–which is great–but the tube that connects to the valves. I had an electric intex pump in addition to the included pump, but the tube is just slightly larger than the nozzle on the electric pump. I would like to know where to get replacement pump tube(s) so I can making a permanent modification/i.e. my own adaptor for the electric pump. And also perhaps to adapt the pump tube–because that plastic doesn’t look very durable to me.

This Kayak has a systemic manufacturing problem spread across its entire issue. The seams are very weak. The material actually ribs without being prompted. They are smart with the three month warranty because they delay you so you cannot really make a claim. When I made the claim months later they said “buy a patchkit” There is no price at which this kayak becomes a bargain. It won’t float and it won’t last. So don’t throw your money over the dam!

Review: Intex Excursion Pro Inflatable Fishing Kayak

If you are looking for a lightweight fishing boat that is affordable yet tough, you may want to consider the intex excursion pro inflatable kayak..

The Intex Pro Inflatable Kayak is a lightweight, portable fishing craft for anglers who want to get off the shore. I had the opportunity to test this kayak and found it to be a solid inflatable option at a great price point.

The first thing I noticed when opening the box how well the kayak and its accessories fit inside the carry bag. I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to get everything back in the bag after use, but it ended up being easier than I thought (one word of advice: pay attention to how each part of the kayak is folded when you first take it out of the box. It might even be useful to take photos).

One of my favorite features of the Intex Excursion Pro is the locking high-output pump. The locking mechanism holds the pump in place and makes inflation a breeze. It only took 10 minutes to inflate all three chambers of the kayak and the two seats. With the Explorer K2 model , you have to hold the end of the pump until the kayak is filled.

The included pressure gauge is handy for ensuring each chamber is inflated to the recommended PSI. It takes some practice to figure out how to angle the gauge while inserted, but otherwise, it is easy to use.

This Intex Excursion Pro features a customizable seating configuration to fit either a single user or two. The seats attach to the kayak using strong velcro and can be adjusted forward or backward depending on the user's height. Two adults fit comfortably, and there is enough space in the bow and stern to enjoy your time out on the water.

Another excellent feature of the Excursion Pro are the footrests, which give you a bit more leverage when paddling. I noticed I did not tire as quickly compared to paddling in the Explorer K2. The Excursion Pro includes three different positions for each seat so you can find the perfect angle.

Fishing from the Excursion Pro was a breeze. The two removable fishing rod holders worked well for holding the rods until we found our fishing spot. The kayak felt sturdy when casting and was comfortable while fishing.

Compared to the Explorer K2, the Excursion Pro has several upgrades: footrests, metal D-rings, fishing pole holders, booster, accessory bar, and heavy-duty material.

It’s very good. Very stable, pumps quickly, everything is there. The footrests are great for paddling alone or with the family. Worth buying verdict

The kayak’s open design makes it simple to get in and out. When entering the kayak, though, the bottom chamber gives way considerably. You should only enter the kayak if the water depth is sufficient (30–40 cm) if you’re using the deep-water fin.

How to Maintain Intex Excursion Pro?

Although the handbook specifies that the boat is built on a flat area free of stones and other sharp items, we did not strictly adhere to this requirement. We’d want to know whether the boat’s skin could not resist these tiny stones. Of course, we don’t want to do any harm, but the boat skin gives us confidence because it isn’t simply PVC. The boat’s skin is made of polyester fabric that is PVC-coated on both sides. The boat skin may be repaired using the included repair kit if it is damaged.

Check the air pressure with the included manometer as soon as the air chamber reaches its final form. The chambers may be inflated to a maximum pressure of 0.08 bars. This isn’t much for an inflatable kayak, but it’s a bit more than the Intex Challenger K2 and Explorer K2. If you’ve been on the water with the boat for a while, take a stop on the beach to check the air pressure. 

Why you should buy this product?

If you are tall and paddling the boat alone, we recommend using the front bottom loops (intended for the 2-person configuration). Aside from the footrest, the interior of the kayak is spacious enough for a solitary paddler.

Footrests are unsuitable for tall people. On extended excursions, the footrests are inconvenient for tall paddlers. Because we have to bend our legs too far when utilizing the footrest, even though it is fastened in the outermost loops, this isn’t a major problem for short tours. However, during half-day or full-day trips, it gets unpleasant. For little people, the footrests may be a great help in getting a good grip on the boat.

Most inflatable kayaks are sorely missing a backbone. Being supported by air, there’s not much to be done about the lack of structure, which in most craft leads to less-than-impressive performance. Not so with this kayak: Suffice it to say, the Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Kayak ($670) has a spine.

This kayak absolutely impressed with its sharp, V-shaped hull design, and it’s owed to the internal aluminum rib sections in the bow and stern — allowing it to cut through the water better than any other kayak we tested. Instead of floating atop the water, the AdvancedFrame rides more like a real kayak, and while maneuverability still isn’t the hottest, straight-line paddling was on par with many hard-sided boats.

Aiding that hull design is the material makeup of the hull itself, which is a triple-layer PVC design with a slick exterior that cuts down on drag. A full seven(!) inflation bladders make up the muscle behind the AdvancedFrame, including the internal/external bladders that make up the hull. This design is quite different from many other inflatables, which more often inflate independently.

The floor is a standard multi-chamber design, and while not a drop-stitch construction, it still adds a good amount of rigidity to the kayak. A covered deck design is also novel and makes the AdvancedFrame amenable to day touring where you might want to stash some kit away from splashes. The inflatable coming on the deck will even interface with a spray skirt.

This kayak is one of the few members of the ‘actually fits back in the bag’ club, a not-so-small feat for an inflatable kayak. Typically, we’d advocate reversing your air pump and suctioning down your kayaks before storing them, but the AdvancedFrame will pack away even without. What it doesn’t do, unfortunately, is drain very well, and with the absence of a drain plug, we found we had to strip the kayak down and let it dry for a day before packing it away. Annoying, to say the least.

Beyond the number of similar variations that Advanced Elements sells, similar kayaks to consider would be the Aquaglide Navarro 110 , another touring-inspired design that also sports a full coverage deck. The drop stitch floor on the Navarro is more rigid than standard inflatables, but thanks to the aluminum supports, the Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Kayak out paddles it any day.

While there are even cheaper inflatable kayaks on the market, we found they were all glorified pool toys and not up for the rigors of frequent use. At $398, the Intex Excursion Pro K2 isn’t cheap cheap, but that also means that this kayak won’t punch its clock prematurely. For casual paddling with a friend, we were pleased with the performance.

Sized for two, the Excursion Pro is made from a standard 3-ply PVC, which is a tough skin that while not the burliest out there, was durable enough to not worry about beaching the kayak on friendly shores. The 3-chamber construction is fairly standard and inflated easily enough with the included pump.

The seats on the K2 are, frankly, a bit lacking, and while adjustable fore and aft, and pretty squishy and don’t provide as much support as the EVA panel options seen in the Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame or Aquaglide Deschutes . Good enough for an afternoon, but all-day paddling might require a few more swim breaks.

Being 12.5’ long, the Excursion Pro tracks pretty nicely, and a shallow or deep water skeg helps shore up that performance. With two paddlers you’ll need to perfect your tandem paddle strokes to keep it on the line, but even on strong-flowing rivers, we could maneuver where we needed to be.

While the Excursion is also available in a solo-piloted version, the price difference is minimal, and in our experience, this kayak paddles about just as well with one person as it does with two. The additional space is also a boon for toting around extra gear, or as in our testing, a well-mannered pup.

In the end, we settled on the Intex Excursion Pro K2 as our bash-about lazy river cruiser of choice. There’s a certain something about a kayak you can wail on with impunity, and for the price, it’s tough to argue with the K2. If you’re looking just to dip your toe into the world of inflatable kayaks, or need to pad out your loaner fleet at the lake cabin, this Intex boat isn’t a half-bad choice.

Yeah, we know. The Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport ($1,499) isn’t technically an inflatable kayak, but let us hit you with another revelation: it does everything an inflatable kayak does, but better . Nailing the same portable and compact metrics as pump-up options, this origami boat unfolds into a faster, more agile, and more capable craft that can’t be punctured. For many folks, the best inflatable may be foldable, instead.

Compared to even the quick Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame , there’s no catching the Oru on a straight line in anything inflatable. The deep V hull design and long water line set this kayak off, and the slick exterior keeps drag to a minimum. Hard chines give this kayak a good degree of secondary stability, which allowed us to put the boat over on its side during hard turns.

Set up and tear down is faster on this boat as well, which unravels from a compact suitcase-sized rectangle into a full 12’ hull in less than 10 minutes. The new Sport iteration of the Beach LT adds a different hull closure system, and we found it added more rigidity and better waterproofing.

The cockpit of the Beach LT Sport is large — almost a bit too large, and while excellent for settling into, errant waves do find their way in. An optional splash deck is available, which we recommend for folks looking to stay drier. The seat and footrest in this kayak work in tandem to provide a good brace while paddling, and the upgraded gel cushion of the ‘Sport’ version is a worthy upgrade.

We tested this kayak with the new Bixpy K1 Outboard Motor , which mounts to the bottom via an adhesive fin track and is powered by a battery pack stored in the cockpit, and man — does this thing haul. Multiple of our testers returned beaming after taking it for a spin, and with 12 forward speeds this add-on turned this kayak into the fastest in our testing, bar none. 

Even without the Bixpy, however, the Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport wins out. This folding kayak flips the script on packable kayaks, and while it’s tough to argue with the inherent buoyancy of inflatable kayaks, there are few metrics where the Oru isn’t arguably the better craft. Seriously consider this kayak if packability is a premium, but you aren’t a fan of popping your investment.

Many fishing kayaks can weigh upward of 100 pounds and require a cart to haul them to shore. Weighing half that much, the NRS Pike Inflatable Fishing Kayak ($995) makes a compelling argument for never hauling that much plastic again and is decked out with everything we need to get on the bite.

Fishable from a seated or standing position, the Pike is wicked stable thanks to the trimaran hull and drop stitch floor. The bow has a rigid insert that supports that center keel and keeps the kayak tracking far truer than the flat-bottomed kayaks we’ve fished from. The aluminum frame seat has you sitting up high and is adjustable to balance your weight.

The Pike comes with what has to be our favorite pump for inflation. It flips from a high-volume mode that pushes a full gallon of air to a high-pressure mode for topping off the boat. The kayak’s 3-chamber design requires 3 PSI in the tubes and 8 in the drop stitch floor, which really stiffens up the craft and supports standing like a SUP.

The standard rig on this kayak doesn’t leave much out, and there’s daisy chain rigging and bungee cord on the bow and stern, an EVA foam deck pad, and five YakAttack accessory mounts scattered across the deck. Bumping up to the ‘Pro’ version piles on all the YakAttack rod holders, fishing crate, and cupholders you could ask for, although at an extra $400.

We tested this kayak most rigorously during a recent opening day for trout, where lead tester Nick Belcaster found himself decked to the nines in waterproofs for a soggy day of angling. While the lake he was in is frequented more by boats, Nick had the shallows to himself and made out like a bandit for it. When coupled with the Bixpy K1 motor, the Pike was unstoppable at motoring into weed beds where other boats dared to travel and set a steady clip for trawling across the lake. 

Fish hooks and an inflatable kayak might not seem like the kind of mix that works out well, but we can report from experience: the NRS Pike shrugs them off. Ideal for flat water, easy rivers, and even some saltwater angling, this kayak is the minimalist angler’s dream craft.

Large and in charge, the BOTE Lono Aero ($1,549) is a fully drop stitch design party barge, and one of the only inflatable kayaks on the market to support a pedal drive system. When fully kitted out, the APEX pedal drive and rudder on this kayak make it a super versatile watercraft.

BOTE is all about the drop stitch construction, which slings thousands of polyester threads between the sides of an air chamber, linking them together and ensuring even pressure distribution across the entire surface. In short, drop-stitch boats are far more rigid than typical air chambers, creating surfaces you can stand on without deflection.

The Lono Aero is the perfect application for this tech, and the 12.5’ long hull is supremely rigid when fully inflated — floating on top of the water like a SUP. In fact, this vessel may be more closer to a standup paddleboard than a kayak and can be paddled either way. As such, maneuverability is high, and the Lono can be spun around like a top.

The Apex Pedal Drive ($900) is an optional addition to the Lono, but in our opinion, it’s what makes this kayak. Set into the port in the floor, the prop drive gets the kayak scooting along, and the included rudder means you can go hands-free for long transits or fishing. As a prop drive there’s on-demand reverse, which we found valuable when backing out of tight spots while angling.

The high sides of the Lono keep wave splashing down to a minimum, and the elevated seat has you sitting up high in this kayak. We did find fairly quickly during our tests, however, that the Lono has a great deal of windage due to those tall sides, and it was often tough if not impossible to keep this kayak headed where we wanted if the wind was blowing strong enough.

While inflatable kayaks are tough, they also aren’t infallible, and our first Lono unfortunately had a leak pop up somewhere within the tube structure. BOTE’s 2-year warranty is robust, however, and within a week we were back on the water in a new unit. With more accessories than we know what to do with, and that excellent pedal drive, the BOTE Lono Aero is ideal for those who want the full package out on the water.

Aquaglide Deschutes 145

With room for two to tango, the Aquaglide Deschutes 145 ($700) is a 14.5’ tandem kayak that outperformed our expectations and did so while only weighing 25 pounds and packing down into its own backpack carrying case. If you were looking at a rotomolded kayak of the same length, you’d be looking at lugging around 70-odd pounds — point to the inflatables.

Unlike many similar designs, the floor of the Deschutes isn’t actually inflatable, which we came to appreciate: the lower center of gravity provided a more stable paddling experience, and the internal bolsters that run perpendicular provide all the rigidity. An EVA floor panel keeps things comfortable, and both paddlers have plenty of room to spread out.

The width on the Deschutes is a bit portly at almost 40 inches, but adjusting your paddle length to match will keep you from bumping the sides. Paddling this kayak tandem was a joy, and with a 600-pound weight capacity, there’s room for two, plus overnight kit.

The Deschutes isn’t lacking in the durability department, either. “I’ve had zero issues,” said tester Kyle Nossaman. “We bumped against downed trees, sharp rocks on banks, a few river bottoms, and even portaged a few times through thorny woods. There are a few scratches on the sides and bottom, but nothing more than cosmetic.”

When it comes time to wrap things up, the integrated drain plug in the floor makes it easy to dry the Deschutes (we’re not sure why this isn’t more universally adopted), and even as a tandem, the kayak packs down to be carried on your back. While there are other tandem inflatables on the market, the Aquaglide Deschutes 145 is certainly near the top.

Hailing from the big-name packraft brand, the Kokopelli Platte ($899) is a capable little flatwater boat with a self-bailing design that can be opened or closed, depending on how rowdy the conditions are. We eagerly took the Platte out for a few test runs in the waters of the Salish Sea this spring, and were immediately impressed with this kayak.

The generously sized duffel bag provided made packing and carrying a breeze, and the efficient hand pump had the kayak ready to go in under 10 minutes. While an electric pump could speed up the process even more, the included pump did the job effectively. Deflating the kayak was just as simple, and made setup and takedown quick and convenient for spontaneous paddling excursions.

Tester Wil Henkel is just under 6’2”, and although he had initial concerns about the kayak length being a bit short, the adjustable seat made it quick to adjust for sizing. Due to the kayak’s short length, it is quite mobile on and off the water. After inflating, we found it lightweight and easy to move, thanks to its relatively small size, which allowed it not to feel so cumbersome getting down to the water.

Once on the water, the Platte showcased its agility and maneuverability. Its short hull made it incredibly nimble, especially in tight spots and when executing quick turns. However, we did notice that the kayak’s limited bow rocker made it prone to taking water over the bow in choppy conditions. We’ll note that the self-bailing kayak could stay dry even with water coming over the bow, paired with drain plugs. If you are unafraid of getting a little wet, this kayak can take some splashes without worry.

Despite these considerations, the Kokopelli Platte is a versatile option for leisurely paddling, lake exploration, or fishing trips in calm waters. Its compact size and light weight make it perfect for solo adventurers or those seeking a portable kayak for spontaneous outings. While it may not excel in challenging conditions like its hardshell counterparts, its convenience, and performance in milder environments make it a valuable companion for relaxed paddling experiences.

Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110

Weighing in at less than 15 pounds, the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 ($1,300) is easily the welterweight champ in our guide and doesn’t give up any paddling performance to get there. To put that in perspective, the similarly designed (but shorter) Kokopelli Platte weighs in at 24 pounds on the water — almost a full 10 pounds heavier. 

It’s the 70-denier TPU material used that’s to thank here, which is much more like a packraft compared to the PVC typically seen in most inflatable kayaks, and even for a packraft that’s a pretty lightweight material. But unlike a packraft, the Cirrus paddles much more predictably in flat water, and quite a bit faster.

The hull design on the Cirrus has a bit more rocker in the bow and stern than flat-bottomed boats like the Platte, which helps it manage wind waves more easily. This also creates a fairly short waterline, which means this kayak pivots on a dime, but also won’t be the quickest of the bunch.

The drop stitch construction floor certainly has a good bit to do with the overall rigidity, and this hybrid design was one of our favorites to paddle. Adding a rigid floor to these types of boats greatly improves their handling and speed, as power isn’t lost and absorbed by softer air chambers. 

We keyed in on the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 as being the ideal inflatable kayak for anyone living the van life, or those into overlanding — where space is at a premium and the compact nature of the kayak shines. Many of these folks would likely also consider a packraft, but for purely flatwater use, the Cirrus is going to out-paddle any raft nine times out of ten.

How we tested inflatable kayaks.

GearJunkie plays host to a flotilla of paddlers, and from sea kayak and whitewater guides to casual paddle-dippers, something we all know almost universally is a lack of gear storage space.

Some of us are van life aficionados, where space is tight, and carrying a kayak is often not feasible unless it’s inflatable, while others simply have hit the ceiling in their gear closets, or live out of apartments lacking a spare 12 feet of uninterrupted space. Inflatable kayaks provide an answer for these scenarios, and we tested them as they were intended to be used: paddled hard and put away wet.

Collectively, we’ve paddled to some far-flung locales, and even to places few have been before. Lead reviewer and Editor Nick Belcaster directed efforts for this review, and as mainly a packrafter, Nick knows the importance of a portable watercraft. His testing for this review mainly saw him making runs between the San Juan Islands of Washington State, crossing high alpine lakes in the North Cascades, and navigating coastal rivers on the Olympic Peninsula.

Tester Wil Henkel is no stranger to a paddle. As a sea kayak and whitewater guide, he has logged hundreds of miles in conditions ranging from mild to daring. His most recent foray saw him scouting and completing the first descent of a new river in Ecuador, where a lightweight boat was essential. For this review, his paddle craft got even lighter, and his testing is informed by a deep understanding of the finer points of kayak design.

Our inflatable kayak testing occurred over months of paddling, where we crowded the beaches and docks of our local lakes and shorelines with kayaks for both head-to-head testing, as well as more recreational pursuits. We aimed to test all facets of a kayak’s paddling: speed, maneuverability, stability, and comfort. Employing our friends and families in the quest, we gathered feedback from complete novices to near-pros, and from various body types.

Because inflatable kayaks also require some set-up, we spent a good amount of time familiarizing ourselves with inflation pumps, pressures, and, yes, even repair. Our testing also included the all-important ‘small apartment’ and ‘sedan’ tests, where the true portability and packability of these kayaks were weighed on the most accurate scales we could devise.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose an Inflatable Kayak

Inflatable kayaks are all about balance or compromise, depending on how you look at things. While inflatables rarely perform as well as hard-sided kayaks, they make up for it in their compact and lightweight designs, which is an asset all on its own. 

Because of this, there’s an entire spectrum of inflatable kayaks for nearly anything you’d want to get into, and many designs lean further into a certain niche to provide the paddle you’re after. Consider the following before you jump into your next inflatable kayak. 

Hardshell vs. Inflatable Kayaks

Hardshell Kayaks

A typical hardshell kayak will differ most greatly from an inflatable in overall performance. Its solid construction better translates paddling power and responds to weight shifting related to maneuverability. Its hull can be more aggressively shaped and edged harder, and it most typically rides lower in the water.

Hardshell kayaks are also more durable, as they can withstand repeated bonks and bumps on rocks and logs without worry. Seating can be more adjustable, and storage can often be within the kayak rather than on top.

Inflatable Kayaks

Inflatable kayak designs are made to be lightweight and portable, and this is their greatest advantage over hardshell kayaks. Compressing down into large duffels, inflatables can be carried almost anywhere, and inflated once you get to the water. 

Because they float high on the water, inflatable kayaks are often more maneuverable than hardshell kayaks, which must contend with drag beneath the surface. Because of this, they won’t track as well, but a good tracking fin can remedy this.

Types of Inflatable Kayaks

Like regular kayaks, inflatable kayaks can also be specialized for a certain style of paddling or water, and identifying your needs is the first step in narrowing down the perfect boat for you.

Recreational

Due to the lower-stakes paddling you’re likely to do in them, most inflatable kayaks are recreational boats , meaning they’re primed for an afternoon at the lake, a day cruising a lazy river, or poking around into the next bay on a calm ocean. These boats lean into the do-it-all ethos, offering enough ability to handle a surprise swell, and enough storage to pack away a shore lunch.

The BOTE Lono Aero might be the king of recreation, and with a laundry list of fun accessories (including a magnetic coffee mug), this kayak is a hoot to take out for the day. The Aquaglide Deschutes 145 , Cirrus Ultralight , and Kokopelli Platte are similarly up for most anything and inflate quickly, paddle well, and store minimally.

Touring kayaks are meant for further afield paddling, and while this doesn’t have to mean turning out to sea for a month, a good number of inflatable kayaks are primed for whole day or weekend touring. These kayaks are very often longer to support a greater weight of equipment, as well as elongate their water lines to make paddling long distances easier.

The Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame is an excellent all-day tourer, and we even used it for a three-day overnight paddle (by spreading the group gear across a few boats). The V-shaped hull made for quick paddling, and the enclosed deck design kept things dry across 5-hour sessions in the saddle.

Inflatable kayaks and angling may not seem like they go hand-in-hand, but blow-up fishing kayaks are certainly a thing and to great success. With burly materials, accidental hook strikes simply bounce off, and the inherent stability involved makes for easy fishing while standing.

The wide profile and broad pontoons of the NRS Pike made it the fishing kayak to be in during our testing, and with a shallow draft and easy maneuvering, we were able to tuck this kayak into tight weed beds. The Intex Excursion Pro K2 isn’t half-bad at fishing, either, and even comes with a number of optional rod holders.

The hull is the profile of the kayak itself, and the shape of the hull greatly affects the paddling performance and stability of your craft. There are four basic kayak hull shapes, with two commonly used in inflatable kayaks.

• Pontoon Hulls : This hull design supports the kayak on two points in the water, with an elevated bottom between the two — similar to the designs of catamaran sailboats. This gives them a great deal of stability, but also a degree of speed, as they cut through the water with less drag than a flat hull. The NRS Pike uses such a hull.
• Flat Hulls : Flat hulls are similar to pontoon hulls, but lack some tracking ability, as they pivot easily as they sit on top of the water. These hulls are popular in beginner boats, but they aren’t built for speed, but rather stability. The flat hull of the BOTE Lono Aero makes it quite stable, but also a bit unwieldy to keep on track.
• Rounded Hulls : Made for tracking ability, rounded hulls position themselves with a single point lowest in the water, but retain some stability by rounding out their edges, meaning less-confident paddlers can lean in them without feeling like they will tip. The Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame Kayak has a slightly rounded shape beneath the paddler and can be leaned over on edge.
• V-Shape Hulls : Similar to rounded designs, V-shaped hulls take the idea to the extreme, and cut through the water like a knife. This makes them very good at tracking and speed, but these hulls often feel more tippy to novice paddlers. The Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport has a prominent V-shaped hull in the bow and stern, which made it the fastest in our review.

While inflatable kayaks won’t win awards for speed or tracking, they make up for it in stability and maneuverability. We wanted to challenge the balance of these kayaks and did so by rocking the boat, so to speak. In both flat water and rivers, we leaned these kayaks over until they flipped, noting how much we could get away with.

Most inflatable kayaks will have excellent primary stability — the balance felt when floating on still water. Because of their pontoon or flat hull designs, wide surface contact with the water keeps them from leaning too far over, and most inflatable kayaks will feel very stable to paddle around on flat water. 

When water gets a bit rough, however, a different type of stability is needed, and that’s secondary stability . This is the balance a kayak has when put on its edge, and this can be a very effective tool for paddling in heavy seas, or in Class II or above whitewater. 

An important component of this secondary stability is design lines known as chines, which run from bow to stern and separate the side from the bottom of the kayak. Because most inflatable kayaks use a pontoon design, these chines are soft, meaning they provide little edgability when leaned over. Lean too far, and you’ll dunk the thing.

The exceptions to the rule here are boats that pretend to be inflatable, and the Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport does have a defined separation between side and bottom, and a surprising amount of secondary stability. This stability allows it to shoulder waves better than most inflatables.

Of the inflatables, however, the Aquaglide Deschutes 145 was notable for being confidence-inspiring for even our most green paddlers, and the non-inflatable and low floor is to praise here. This kept paddlers solidly placed, and the wider beam prevented errant tipping.

Tracking and Glide

Staying on a straight course is important for paddling efficiency, and an untamed kayak can be frustrating to get where you’re going. We challenged these inflatables side-by-side with hardshell kayaks to see just how straight they could track, as well as how far they could glide once we stopped paddling.

While most inflatables have rather clunky or bulbous bow shapes, the internal aluminum ribs in the Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame kayak form a sharp V-shape hull, which cuts through the water in the same way that many hardshell kayaks do. This helped the AdvanceFrame outpace any of our other tested inflatable kayaks.

The NRS Pike similarly has a rigid keel insert in the bow to form a V-shape hull, and combined with the long pontoon-shaped bottom and tracking fin, kept this kayak on the straight and narrow while paddling. The slick exterior PVC finish on this boat also undoubtedly decreased drag in the water, and kept it moving for a while after we stopped paddling.

Tracking fins make a significant difference in the tracking that a kayak does, and most often are affixed to the boat by a rail mount, making the fins removable for storage. Some smaller stability fins will be molded right into the bottom, and these little bite fins, such as seen on the BOTE Lono Aero or Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame , add some tracking ability but can’t be swapped out for different shapes and sizes. 

Notably, the Kokopelli Platte has two tracking fins — one larger and one smaller — which we found aids in keeping the bow from waggling too much during paddling. We found this to be an issue on shorter boats such as the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 , which does sport a nice-sized fin but otherwise has a short waterline and pivots while paddling.

Because they require larger hulls to pack on enough buoyancy to stay afloat, inflatable kayaks often have taller sides than hardshell kayaks, and combined with their light weights and low water lines, mean these craft are susceptible to the effects of windage. We noticed this most significantly on the BOTE Lono Aero , which has tall sides, floats like a cork, and can be unruly to paddle in a stiff breeze.

Maneuverability

The trade-off for less-than-stellar tracking is excellent maneuverability, which we can say every kayak in our lineup has. We tested this by spinning circles in these kayaks, noting how many paddle strokes were required to turn 360 degrees, and running them through a slalom course of buoys in our local lake.

Here, floating like a cork actually helps these kayaks, and with little drag beneath the water line, they skim across the surface with little to slow them down during a turn. While the V-shaped bow of the Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame aided it in tracking, it hindered it in our maneuverability testing, taking more paddle strokes to spin than other vessels.

The Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport suffered similarly, however, the additional secondary stability this boat has allowed it to edge into turns a bit better. The NRS Pike was also a little slower to come around, but did benefit from only having a V-shaped hull in the bow, while the stern was able to skid around with little drag.

Flat-bottomed boats with rising bows were the quickest to spin, and the Kokopelli Platte and Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 both whip around like a top. Longer boats like the tandem Aquaglide Deschutes 145 or BOTE Lono Aero took a bit more effort.

Construction and Quality

There’s a broad span between a pool toy and the $1,500+ investments at the far end of the inflatable kayak spectrum, and a good bit of that comes down to construction and build quality. With multiple seasons on some of these kayaks now, we’ve taken the kid gloves off and used these kayaks as they were meant to be used, and then some.

Punctures, obviously, are going to be your biggest concern, but thankfully inflatable kayaks today employ some rugged materials in their construction. Most typically, polyvinyl chloride, or PVC , is the material of choice for most inflatable kayaks, as it is a rugged and affordable material to produce, and can be patched easily.

Thermoplastic polyurethane, or TPU , is undoubtedly the future of performance inflatable kayaks. Much more often used in packrafts today, this material can be less durable than thick PVC but makes up for it by being much lighter and packable, significantly decreasing the stored size of watercraft built from it. Only the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 in our testing is made from this material, and is one of the only ones on the market, in fact.

In certain boats, textile coverings are added to the hull designs to protect the tubes or add a drag-free finish below the water line. The Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame has both and is a very durable and quick kayak for it.

Air Chambers

Simpler inflatable kayaks will be built with an air chamber design, typically joining two separate pontoons on the sides with an inflatable floor to form a 3-chamber boat. This accomplishes two things: When pressures increase in one chamber (say, from leaning on it), this isn’t transferred to the others, making for a more stable craft. And should the worst occur and one chamber punctures, you won’t have to go down with the ship.

The Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame is noteworthy for its dual bladder design in the hull, which combines an internal and external chamber to form the kayak. Not only does this help add rigidity to the hull, but it also hedges your bets against an accidental deflation causing a full-on sinking. With even one bladder entirely deflated, we could paddle around with ease.

Drop Stitch Construction

A marvel of manufacturing, drop stitch construction allows for flat inflated surfaces with very high pressures, and it’s all thanks to a couple thousand strands of polyester. These strands connect the two sides of the air chamber and prevent it from bowing out from the pressure. Commonly used in iSUPs, this design style creates an almost hardshell-like surface and rigidity.

Hybrid designs that use a drop stitch floor and air-chamber hulls were some of the quickest in our testing, with better rigidity and power transfer being the cause. The NRS Pike is one such boat, and with a full-length drop stitch floor, it’s easy to walk along the entire length while fishing.

Inflatable watercraft manufacturers haven’t settled on a universal inflation valve yet; however, some are more prevalent than others. The Leafield C7 valves used on the NRS Pike are standard on whitewater rafts, and are even reparable to ensure a quality seal. Halkey-Roberts style valves are widely used on inflatable kayaks and standup paddleboards and feature a quarter-turn pin to switch from inflation to deflation mode.

More obscure valves include the proprietary spring valve found on the Advanced Elements boats. This valve operates similarly to other two-way valves but requires a special adapter to use on most pumps. These kayaks also feature common twist valves, which are used in low-pressure applications such as deck supports or seats.

Inflation pressures will vary depending on a number of factors, but the best rule is to follow the manufacturer’s specifications and don’t exceed them. Pumps with built-in pressure gauges are invaluable for measuring this, though some kayaks use an external screw-on gauge, like the Intex Excursion K2 .

Because both sides of the structure are bound together, drop stitch construction inflatables can be pressurized to much higher pressures. The hull of the BOTE Lono Aero calls for an ideal pressure of 10-15 PSI, which makes it incredibly sturdy. 

Finally, be mindful of changing conditions while paddling. When you first set your kayak in the water, it may become softer after a few minutes as the air in the boat contracts on contact with the cold water. A good way to get around this is by tempering your boat, which involves leaving it in the water (secured!) for a few minutes while you prep the rest of your kit, then topping off whatever pressure you may have lost.

It’s also important to remember that the inverse of this effect also occurs, and leaving your inflatable kayak on shore in the sun can increase pressures inside to damaging levels. If you’re going to leave your kayak for any extended period of time, dump some air to provide a cushion for expansion.

Seating and Comfort

An inflatable kayak ain’t much if it isn’t comfortable, and we put in the hours in the saddle to find where each landed on the spectrum. Enlisting our friends and family, we had paddlers from ages 6 to 62 jump into each of these boats and provide feedback on seating and fitment comfort, as well as how adjustable they were.

The most comfortable seats in our testing were on the Aquaglide Deschutes and Kokopelli Platte , both of which are plush foam slings set into the cockpit and fastened with straps. We particularly appreciated that the seat in the Platte is fastened both fore and aft, which allowed for more fine-tuning to get the fit just right.

Seating in inflatable kayaks isn’t typically the most complicated or adjustable compared to hardshell kayaks, which have the luxury of hard-fastened mounting points and permanent seats. Some designs are fully inflatable themselves, though we didn’t find these the most supportive for long paddles. The Intex Excursion Pro K2 uses these types of seats, and while the added booster pad was a nice touch, they lacked the all-day support we were after.

Styled like many fishing kayaks, the aluminum frame and mesh seat on the NRS Pike is quite supportive and can be moved within the kayak to balance your weight out before being strapped down. The seat back itself folds forward for easier storage and carry, though it lacks much recline angle — something that can be nice to dial back for long transits.

The seat on the BOTE Lono Aero had us sitting higher than any other set-up, and is a full drop-stitch construction, just like the rest of the kayak. While this was an adjustable and stable seat, the pressure needed to inflate it made it fairly stiff for extended paddling. We found that you could underinflate it a bit to get a bit more cushion out of it.

Weight and Packed Size

Thankfully, inflatable kayaks are typically pretty light, meaning they can be carried easily either deflated or inflated. Commonly around 25-40 pounds, it’s simple enough for most people to single-hand carry these kayaks, and all come with some type of storage case or pack. In order to test these kayaks in this regard, we toted them dang near everywhere, from short beach approaches to a couple mile portage into an alpine lake.

Weighing in at under 15 pounds, the Aquaglide Cirrus Ultralight 110 is the lightest full-featured inflatable kayak we’ve paddled to date, and its TPU construction makes it far lighter and more packable than other PVC boats. This is the kayak we’d snag to pack into those hard-to-reach bodies of water.

Most of the inflatable kayaks we paddled otherwise were between 25 and 45 pounds, which is a weight off our shoulders, considering that most plastic kayaks start at 50 pounds and head north from there. The foldable polypropylene sheet construction of the Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport keeps it lighter than average at 28 pounds, and it’s easy to carry this kayak with the included shoulder strap. Oru also offers a backpack case for this kayak, which makes toting it around even easier.

The BOTE Lono Aero is certainly the heavyweight in our review, and at 51 pounds for the vessel, plus the added weight of the optional pedal drive and rudder assembles, it’s best to offload this kayak somewhere near where you want to launch. The storage duffel for the Lono is wheeled, thankfully, and we found it even navigated packed dirt trails well.

Packed Size

A compact packed size is one of the best reasons for jumping into an inflatable kayak, and our roof racks gathered dust while we tested these kayaks, shuttling them around in the beds of our pickups, the trunks of our SUVs, and during one ill-advised bike carry. While you’d be hard-pressed to get a hardshell kayak into your apartment, all of these kayaks tuck away into a gear closet. 

As a single-seater, the Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame packs down to about the size of a piece of carry-on luggage, and while almost universally it’s tough to get an inflatable kayak back in the bag, this kayak made it easy on us and slipped back in every time. The Aquaglide Cirrus UL is similarly compact, and the compression storage bag used to carry it can also double as a dry bag while paddling. Smart.

The BOTE Lono Aero takes up the most space in our gear closets, and at 73 pounds packed in a 41” x 19” x 13” carrying case, there’s little chance you could get this boat aboard an airplane without paying the oversized baggage fee. The Lono was the only kayak in our tests that we weren’t able to carry on our backs, though the wheeled case was rugged enough to maneuver across paved lots.

On-Board Storage and Weight Capacity

Due to their frequently open-top designs, storage space on inflatable kayaks is often limited to what you can store atop these boats, either beneath bungee cords or behind seats. 

As a touring-styled inflatable, the Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame kayak is the exception to the rule and tucks away storage space in both the bow and stern beneath the decks. These storage areas are minimal but are easily accessed through zippers in the decks. This kayak also offers some on-deck storage as well, in the form of a bungee system on the bow.

The covered bow and stern deck design is a common one, and the Aquaglide Deschutes , Kokopelli Platte , and Aquaglide Cirrus all sport them. Like the AdvanceFrame these aren’t very waterproof areas, but are pretty secure for tossing a daypack or a dry bag. The deck covers on the Intex Excursion K2 are more for looks, and there isn’t too much space beneath them.

The large cockpit of the Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport will accept a good bit of kit behind the seat, and we could fit all of our fishing kit or lunch back here. The enclosed areas behind the bow and stern bulkheads is also surprisingly spacious, and during an overnight paddle we used these spaces to store bulky items such as foam sleeping pads. Know that these bulkheads aren’t waterproof, but also don’t accumulate much water.

Dedicated storage space on the BOTE Lono Aero comes in the form of a few bungee corded areas in the bow and stern deck, along with an opening for slotting in one of the brand’s Kula 5 coolers — a great option but an eye-popping $270. These cords work well to wrangle stuff sacks, and for smaller kits, the Lono has a couple of stash pockets for your sunscreen or sunnies.

Weight Capacity

Weight capacity is another important factor to consider, and there is more variability here. Notably, the AdvanceFrame can only carry 250 pounds, meaning there isn’t much wiggle room for additional gear for some paddlers. The Cirrus UL can tackle an extra 50 pounds on top of that, which gives a better buffer to be able to load on some heavier kit. Know that weight capacity includes yourself as the paddler, and plan accordingly.

Inflatable kayaks can command the same range of prices that hardshell kayaks do (up to a point), but there’s a distinct difference between a budget inflatable and a high-dollar craft. Consider how often you’ll be using your kayak, as well as what your future needs may be when choosing which one to go with.

Budget inflatable kayaks typically range from $250-400 and will most often be single-seaters — though some, like the Intex Excursion Pro K2 ($398), are offered as tandems for not much more out the door. These boats will be constructed of PVC laid up in multiple layers to add durability, though they often won’t sport the water-resistant or slick fabrics that more mid-range kayaks will. Be wary of inflatable kayaks offered for less than this, as our experiences have shown them to be less than reliable, and have lifespans that end before the year is up.

Mid-range inflatable kayaks like the Advanced Elements AdvanceFrame ($670) will go for around $600-1,000, and be better equipped to face a wider variety of water and paddling uses. The multiple air chamber design on the AdvanceFrame is undoubtedly more expensive to produce, but it yields a much more rigid and stable kayak. At $700, the Aquaglide Deschutes 145 nets you the ability to paddle with a partner, or single-hand if you like.

Bumping up the price a bit more allows you to have drop stitch construction in your kayak, which can greatly improve performance. The Kokopelli Platte ($899) and NRS Pike ($995) both have drop stitch floors, and the paddle is much more responsive and faster for it. It’s good to note that some kayaks will even offer a drop stitch floor as an upgrade , which can allow you to get into a kayak for cheaper, and then add on the floor when you’re after more technical ability.

Anything above $1,000 should be considered high-end or specialized, and the Aquaglide Cirrus UL ($1,300) is certainly specialized. Using a more expensive TPU construction, this kayak is full-sized while weighing almost half of similar kayaks. The Oru Kayak Beach LT Sport ($1,499) flips the script and does everything an inflatable can while unfolding to form a hardshell kayak. And the full drop stitch construction of the BOTE Lono Aero ($1,549) and optional pedal drive make this a premium option for paddlers who want the full experience, no options spared.

For those short on storage space or an effective way to transport hardshell kayaks, the answer is an emphatic yes! Even those with the space to store traditional kayaks will also find certain inflatable kayaks to be enjoyable for leisurely paddling where ultimate performance isn’t needed.

There are certainly things that inflatable kayaks do better than a full-on hardshell kayak, including packed size and weight. They also often float higher in the water, which can be an asset for paddling in shallow water. This also allows them to be turned quickly, and across the board, these kayaks turn faster than their hardshell cousins.

If you’re after absolute performance, inflatable kayaks may not be the best option, as they do give up some speed and tracking in their designs. But if portability is the primary concern, it’s tough to go wrong with one.

Generally, inflatable kayaks are not tippy, due to their pontoon hull designs and inherent high buoyancy. This is called primary stability, which is the even-keeled feeling of sitting atop the water, and all of the inflatable kayaks we tested had excellent stability.

Of the kayaks we’ve paddled, those with wider profiles and flat bottoms were the most stable, with the BOTE Lono Aero and Aquaglide Deschutes both being notable, but for different reasons. The Lono is pretty much an iSUP with a kayak profile above the water, making it supremely stable even to walk around on. The Deschutes, on the other hand, uses a non-inflatable floor, which drops the paddlers low and keeps the center of gravity where you want it.

While it’s easy to imagine dashing your inflatable kayak to bits on the rocks, most models these days are fairly durable — so long as you treat them correctly. During testing, we had no issues beaching these kayaks but were cognizant of what we were landing on.

Use care to avoid obstacles such as submerged limbs or rocks, as these could potentially tear your kayak if you hit them with enough force. And if you do develop a tear, most inflatable kayaks today come with a repair kit that will allow you to get back on the water.

Drying the inside of your inflatable kayak is an essential step in putting it away in storage, and should be done every time to ensure no funky smells or mildew has a chance to take hold. While some kayaks like the Aquaglide Deschutes and Cirrus UL sport integral drain plugs in the floor, these aren’t universal

The best practices we’ve come up with through our testing are as follows: Begin by dumping any standing water out of your kayak and really give it the business with a good shake or three. Any water left you’ll have to go after, so save yourself the hassle. Then, open up any deck closures and remove any internal floors. Run a dry microfiber towel along the inside and be diligent about mopping up any liquid you find.

Once you’re satisfied with your work, it’s time to let the sun do its magic — or, in the absence, a well-ventilated room. Leave your kayak unrolled until it is entirely dry before putting it away, and it’ll be ready to go the next time you want to paddle.

While it isn’t the best practice, many inflatable kayaks can be left inflated for quick use, but there are some considerations. For one, know that air is constantly changing pressure based on the ambient temperature, and if left in the sun, your kayak may overpressurize and spontaneously blow a seam. If leaving your kayak inflated in the sun, let out a good amount of air so there’s room for expansion.

Another consideration is the damage caused by the UV from the sun, which will deteriorate your kayak, given enough exposure. Because of this, we recommend storing your kayak away from the sun if you choose to keep it inflated.
