Begin your odyssey in Manali, a haven nestled amidst the towering peaks. From here, throttle towards the Spiti Valley, an arid landscape punctuated by monasteries that stand as sentinels of time. Ride through Rohtang Pass, where snow-capped mountains bid you farewell from Manali, and enter the stark beauty of Lahaul. Day 4-6: Spiti to Leh

Post the Spiti exploration, set course towards Leh, the land that bridges the heavens and the earth. This leg of the journey is a test of will and machine, with passes like Baralacha La and Tanglang La offering both dread and delight. Amidst this, the azure waters of Pangong Lake offer solace, a perfect spot to rest and reflect.

Brooke’s Trip Report From The Indian Himalayas on a Royal Enfield Bullet 350

My friend Brooke recently motorcycled the Indian Himalayas on her Royal Enfield Bullet . This classic Indian Himalaya motorbike itinerary included all the highlights of the high mountains of the far north.

Interested in a longer bike trip? Read my motorcycle tour of India ride report.

Brooke began her journey in Delhi, then up to Rishikesh to Leh and back down again in a two-week itinerary.

A Classic Himalaya Bike Ride Itinerary (14 days)

  • Delhi to Rishikesh, explore the city and rest
  • Rishikesh to Manali, taking in the scenic routes
  • Rest day in Manali, bike checks and permits
  • Manali to Jispa, adapting to altitude
  •  Jispa to Sarchu, crossing Baralacha La
  • Sarchu to Leh, via Tanglang La
  • Explore Leh, Nubra Valley, and Pangong Lake
  • Leh to Srinagar, through Kargil
  • Srinagar to Delhi, concluding the journey

Brooke said of the trip:

I can not describe how epic the journey was but what I know is that I am somehow sad it is over even though my body doesn’t want to sit on the bike for a few days ! Over the highest passes , through the snow, great friends , emotional and physical challenges. It took me 6 years to make the ride and it felt like it lasted for one thousand years . Thank you to everyone who supported me, encouraged me, lent me warm jackets and also those who got me drunk after a long days ride. @bdeva23

Himalaya Bike Trip Cost

How much does it cost to go to ladakh on bike.

The cost of a bike trip to Ladakh can vary widely based on several factors including the duration of your trip, your choice of accommodations, and whether you’re going solo or with a tour operator. Typically, a 10-15 day trip can range from INR 30,000 to INR 50,000 per person. This includes bike rentals, fuel, food, accommodations, and permit fees. Renting a bike could cost you about INR 1,000 to INR 2,000 per day depending on the model. Remember, choosing the right bike is pivotal for the challenging terrains of Ladakh.

Is Ladakh bike trip worth it?

Absolutely! A bike trip to Ladakh is not just about the destination but also the breathtaking journey. Crossing high-altitude passes like Khardung La and Tanglang La, and witnessing pristine lakes like Pangong Tso are experiences that redefine adventure. It’s not just a trip; it’s a rite of passage for every biker.

How can I go to Nepal from India by bike?

Riding from India to Nepal on a bike is an adventure that offers a mix of cultural and scenic delights. The most common entry points from India to Nepal are through the border crossings at Sunauli, Raxaul, and Panitanki. Ensure your bike’s paperwork is in order, along with valid ID proof and, if required, a Nepal visa (though Indians can enter Nepal using valid ID proof without a visa). The journey is relatively straightforward, but always check the latest travel advisories and border regulations.

Which month is best for Ladakh?

The ideal time to visit Ladakh is from June to September when the snow has melted and the roads are clear, making it perfect for bikers. This period offers sublime weather and accessible routes to all major attractions. It’s also when Ladakh’s vibrant culture comes alive with festivals like the Hemis Festival , adding a rich cultural tapestry to your adventure.

In conclusion, a bike trip to Ladakh or extending your ride to Nepal is an adventure that promises not just thrills but also a profound connection with nature and culture. It’s an investment in experiences that last a lifetime. As you plan this epic journey, remember it’s not just about the destination but the stories you gather, the challenges you overcome, and the memories you create along the way.

Himalayan Bike Ride Package

A Himalayan bike ride, especially to Ladakh, is an adventure of a lifetime, but it’s essential to know the costs involved. Planning a 16-day trip? Expect to spend around INR 34,900 if you’re going solo or INR 21,355 per person with a pillion.

These estimates cover fuel, meals, accommodation, and bike maintenance. For a detailed cost breakdown, consider resources like Vargis Khan’s guide to budgeting for your Ladakh trip. Remember, careful planning can help you manage your expenses effectively

Which Royal Enfield is best for Ladakh trip?

Choosing the best Royal Enfield for a Ladakh trip involves considering durability, comfort, and altitude performance. The Royal Enfield Himalayan stands out for its off-road capabilities, long suspension travel, and comfortable seating, making it ideal for the challenging terrains of Ladakh.

Its torquey engine copes well with high altitudes. For detailed comparisons and rider experiences, it’s advisable to consult specific forums or websites dedicated to motorcycle touring India and Royal Enfield models.

I rode my Thunderbird in the Indian Himalayas and it was great. The laidback riding position made it comfortable for a all rider like me.

The Thunderbird is more Easy Rider than Danny MacGaskill

Many friend have taken standard Royal Enfield Bullet 350 on Himalaya Bike Tour and they loved it. It’s best to test ride the bike before you decide. Consider buying a second hand Bullet in Delhi for your trip. It’s value to own the bike if you plan on longer trips or repeat visits.

Every rider must bring his own motorcycle protective gear and helmet. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes. It’s a good idea to wear either a durable high top hiking boot, a real biking boot or even a dirt bike boot. royal enfield himalayan tour

IS IT A PROBLEM IF I WANT TO COME ALONE?

Not at all. Indian hotels usually have double bed rooms, if you don't want to be paired with one of your super friendly group mates, you can ask for single bed rooms for an additional fee, please request this in the application form.

DO I NEED A VISA?

It depends on your nationality. From most of the countries you will need a visa which is a really easy process possible to make online with an average price of 70 USD. Please always check it on your local embassy’s website.

WHICH COUNTRIES WILL WE VISIT?

We’ll stay between the borders of India for the whole trip.

WHAT KIND OF DRIVING LICENSE DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE ON THE TRIP AS A MOTORBIKER?

You need to have a motorcycle driving license valid for an 500 cc motorbike (at least).

WHAT CAN I DO IF I REALLY WANT TO ATTEND, BUT I CAN NOT RIDE?

You can sit into the back-up van and enjoy totally the same trip while saving 300 EUR. Also you will have the chance to sit and ride on the bike behind our guides or if you come together with a rider you can also sit on the back theyer bike for most part of the trip.

IN WHAT KIND OF MOTORCYCLE CLOTHES SHOULD I RIDE?

It depends on your choice. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes. But due to the fact that the temperature is very different in the variant heights, it is good to wear multiple layers, such as in case of skiing. It’s a good idea to wear either a durable high top hiking boot, a real biking boot or even a dirt bike boot.

IS IT EXPECTED TO RAIN?

In Delhi it is absolutely possible, but we won't ride there. In Manali rain can occur in the first two days, then the probability is very small, in most of the time we'll ride in a high altitude desert.

SHOULD I BRING MY OWN HELMET? IF YES, WHAT KIND IS THE BEST?

They provide helmets if necessary, but obviously these ones are used and not from the highest quality. We recommend you bring your own one! It is your decision what kind of a helmet you prefer, but you need to be prepared for defending yourself against very strong sunshine and a lot of dust.

WHAT KIND OF ROAD CONDITIONS SHOULD I EXPECT?

There will be parts with straight, smooth concrete roads, but this is not typical. You need to be prepared for bumpy dirt roads, river crossings, mud, sand, gravel, lots of curves and anything you can imagine.

FOR WHAT KIND OF HEALTH ISSUES SHOULD I BE PREPARED?

First of all we are travelling in India, so you need to know that diarrhea and stomach infections can occur. Our team will always advise you what to eat and drink. Besides Delhi we are staying in a mountain area for the full-time, where water is a lot cleaner, so the risk of getting sick is a lot lower, for instance last year nobody got sick. It’s always a good idea to keep a hand sanitizer or a small bottle of spirit in your bag. Secondly, altitude sickness is a significant issue, although we reach the first 5000 meter high pass in 3 days, usually it is demanding for your body. The risk is getting higher, if you are overweight, you have cardiovascular diseases or high blood pressure or in case of smoking. If you are unsure, talk to your doctor. We'll spend 10 days above 3300 meters and we'll cross 5000 meter passes 5 times. However, if anyone feels unwell, he/she can sit in the back-up car with an oxygen cylinder. From this point someone else will ride his/her bike for a while.

IS THE FUEL SUPPLY SOLVED IN THE WHOLE TRIP?

Yes, it is included in the price and the group leaders will take care of it, they bring extra supply in the back-up van.

WHO LEADS THE TOUR?

The staff contains the following people: a professional motorbiker mountain guide grown up in the mountains of the Himalaya (he's the one who leads the group on the roads), a well-equipped mechanic (he's an expert of Royal Enfield bikes, travelling in the back-up van with his tools and spare parts), another group leader sitting in the back-up van (he can ride anybody's bike if anything goes wrong and he takes care of any upcoming situation) and there is also a group leader from BTS, who has already done this trip multiple times and is experienced in motorcycle guiding, the local culture and sights.

HOW DO BAGS TRAVEL, WHAT KIND OF BAGS SHOULD I BRING?

You need to pack into at least 2 bags. The big bag travels in or on the back-up van so don't bring your expensive suitcases (you can pack them in and out everyday in the hotel), and hand baggages will be strapped on your motorbikes. In this you should have your extra layers, water, camera and any personal items you need during the day.

WHAT KIND OF VACCINATIONS SHOULD I HAVE?

Please ask your local health authority. Usually there are no mandatory vaccinations, but the recommended ones are: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, typhoid, DPT, Meningitis.

ARE THERE ANY MILITARY OR POLITICAL RISKS?

Due to the fact that the route runs on the Indian-Chinese-Pakistan border region, there is a very strong military presence with lots of camps on the way. Our local guides are familiar with the military camps and have a good relationship with them. These places are responsible for medical tasks as well in these areas. Tourism is very developed and is a significant income source in this region, so they are very nice with tourists and pay attention to them. If any problematic situation develops, they would also handle them, no problems have occurred in the past years.

HOW MUCH POCKET-MONEY WILL I NEED?

Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from 250-500 USD. For reference, a meal is between 1-10 USD.

WHAT IS THE LOCAL CURRENCY AND WHERE TO CHANGE MONEY? ARE THERE ATM-S AND CAN I PAY BY CARD?

The currency is Indian Rupee INR. We will have the opportunity to change money at the airport after the arrival to Delhi, or somewhere in the city center. ATM-s and credit card payments are not typical, but can occur in Dehli, Manali and Leh (they do not accept all card types). So we suggest bringing USD in cash and change (you'll have the opportunity to change money in Delhi, Manali and Leh).

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BUY AND DRINK ALCOHOL DURING THE TRIP?

Buying alcohol is somewhat more difficult at most of our accommodations, they can serve beer if you preorder it and some local rum. It is advised to take spirits from home or buy them at the airport. In larger cities there are dedicated alcohol shops, although the price of it rises in proportion to the height above sea level.

WHAT KIND OF INSURANCE SHOULD I TAKE OUT?

You'll need to have one that is valid for motorcycling, valid in India and valid above 5000 meters altitude. If you need help, please get in touch with us!

WHAT KIND OF ACCOMMODATIONS SHOULD I EXPECT ALONG THE WAY?

11 nights in high standard 3 star hotels in double bed rooms, with hot showers and wifi. 3 nights in glamping style tents, which are equipped with beds and bathrooms. The hospitality of the locals makes up for all the inconveniences.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'LL GET A FLAT TIRE OR ANYTHING ELSE IS BROKEN?

You shouldn't worry, the back-up van with the mechanic is always the last one on the road, just park your bike on the side of the road, wait for him and enjoy the stunning scenery while he repairs your bike. Usually he can fix anything within 15 mins. The head of the group will wait for you at the next resting stop.

WILL I HAVE WIFI AND MOBILE NETWORK COVERAGE DURING THE TRIP?

In the big cities such as Delhi, Manali and Leh you’ll have both. In the remote areas it is better not to count on it, but at least every second or maximum 3rd day you will be able to contact the rest of the world. :)

The best way to explore some of the most spectacular landscapes and remote regions on Earth is on a motorcycle. Just think about it: crossing the Himalayan range with its 5000 m high passes would be simply impossible on foot, extremely hard to ride by bicycle, and plain boring driving in a car. If you ride with us, you will have a comfortable and safe journey, thanks to our backup vehicles and the service background.

Ride on the vast Mongolian Steppe and try the real nomadic lifestyle of the locals. Sleep in yurts, dine in the open air and ride into serenity. Simply the best off-road experience.

The Himalayan Grand 2

Itinerary & map.

This itinerary is repeat of the Himalayan Grand itinerary (which takes you higher than 5000 M). Same itinerary but a different start date. Gift yourself “an adventure of a lifetime” !

Day 01: New Delhi – Kalka – Shimla (By Train/ Bus)

Your adventure begins on the 7am express from New Delhi Railway station. The 4 hour journey will bring you to Kalka (at the foot steps of the Himalayas). A 4 hour bus/coach journey from here will bring you to Shimla (capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh & former “summer capital” of India ).

Day 02: Short familiarisation ride  – Narkanda  (70 KM)

Today you’ll meet your Royal Enfield Motorcycle , your ride for the next several days. After an extensive briefing session by your ride leader you’ll take a short ride in an effort to familiarise yourself with the bike and riding conditions. Today’s ride is short but challenging. You’ll be riding up the Hindustan- Tibet Highway (NH- 22) towards Theog.  Leaving the NH- 22 at Narkanda, you shall follow the narrow & winding road up the mountain to the “Hatu peak” and the famous Hatu Temple at the altitude of 3292 M.  After enjoying the spectacular views of the high Himalayan ranges from there, you shall ride the last 10 km on a beautiful district road lined with apple orchards as it winds up & down the mountain to a beautiful “forest lodge” amongst lush greenery. Tonight you’ll be at an altitude of about 2480 M.

Day 03: Narkanda – Sangla (180 KM)

Heading further along the NH- 22 you’ll continue towards Kinnaur, where you’ll ride alongside the fierce Sutlej as you reach turning point Karchham. Here, a road continues towards Spiti and another turns towards the Baspa Valley and on to the beautifull village of Sangla. This is another 18km stretch of narrow winding road with hair- raising gorges & cliffs high above the Baspa river gushing below. Accommodation is in a comfortable tent camp at a beautiful setting on the banks of the river.

Day 04: Sangla  (Return trip to Chitkul – 45 KM)

After enjoying a quiet morning in the lap of Sangla valley you’ll saddle- up once again, for a short ride to Chitkul, another quaint village in the Baspa Valley. Chitkul is the last village on this road towards the border with Tibet (China) and offers great views of snow clad peaks of the Kinnaur region. After spending a little time here you’ll return to Sangla in time for lunch. The evening is at your disposal to take a walk along the Baspa river or just enjoy the view & the setting from the camp.

Day 05: Sangla – Kalpa (55 KM)

We’ll backtrack to the NH- 22 at Karchham and continue on the road towards Recong Peo, where you end up in the village of Kalpa. You’ll most likely be spending the day absorbing the stunning views of the “Kinner Kailash” and reminiscing the past few days after you left Shimla. Or perhaps walking around this lovely village & its apple orchards.  We, on the other hand, will be busy arranging your Inner- line permits (which are required by “foreign visitors” for visiting the areas ahead) and giving the motorcycles a thorough check- up for the journey ahead. You’ll be heading further up the NH- 22 tomorrow and soon enter a region devoid of certain amenities (cell phone networks & provision stores, among other things) so this is your last chance to make long distance phone calls, stack- up on toiletries, or anything else you need.

Day 06: Kalpa – Nako Lake (120 KM)

As you ride further up the Hindustan- Tibet highway, the landscape changes from green to rocky & barren. Still riding along the Sutlej you’ll reach Spello where your permits will be checked at a police check- point. Another 35km ride will bring you to Khab, a small village at the confluence of the Spiti & Sutlej rivers. From this point on you’ll be riding along the Spiti river to reach Nako, a village situated near the small but beautiful Nako lake (Altitude 3660m). This is first of the many high altitude lakes visited by you on this tour. The location of this village is remote & infrastructure is basic. Accommodation here, is in a comfortable tent camp.

Day 07: Nako – Tabo – Kaza (120 KM)

Today’s ride will take you further up into higher mountains (and across the infamous “Maling Nala”, your first major water crossing) then down to Chango where you’ll enter Spiti Valley. Your first destination is Tabo where you visit the historic monastery. After having lunch at a restaurant nearby you’ll embark on the days second leg, a 47km ride along the Spiti river to Kaza.

Day 08: Kaza (optional Langza – Komic Trip)

Kaza is the headquarters of the Spiti sub- division and you’ll be staying here for 2 consecutive nights. You’ll be able to use facilities like Internet & long distance phone calls again, “luxuries” you left behind at Kalpa.  Today you will be visiting the Key Gompa and Komic village (4275m), considered to be one of the highest villages in Asia, on your motorcycle.  The remaining time can be utilised to explore the town & it’s markets.

Day 09: Kaza – Chandra Tal (100 KM)

Continuing up the Spiti Valley & further into higher Himalayas, today you’ll arrive at the second High Altitude Lake on your tour. After crossing a high pass (Kunzum La, 4550m) and a couple of streams (glacier melts) you’ll reach a pasture land 4km short of the beautiful & desolate lake of Chandra Taal (vehicles are not allowed beyond this point & camping is no longer permitted near the lake shore). Here, the accommodation will be at a “basic” camp- site in “alpine” tents (sleeps two each). Sleeping bags will be provided. Dinner & breakfast will be basic “camping meals”. Calls of nature will have to be answered in a small toilet tents or “in the open”, as per your preference.

Day 10: Chandra Taal – Jispa (140 KM)

After breakfast, you’ll say goodbye to the “Moon Lake” and  head down into the Lahaul Valley, along the Chandra, a river originating from a glacier near Baralacha La. The road (or the lack of it) from Chandra Taal all the way to Gramphu (where it meets the popular Manali- Leh “highway”) offers some of the most thrilling riding experience you’ll have on this tour. This stretch of the journey has several big & small water crossings challenging enough to test your grit & determination. After Gramphu its a relatively smooth ride till Jispa (20km ahead of Keylong). On the way, the Chandra & Bhaga rivers meet at Tandi (which is also the last fuel station before Leh) & together form the Chandrabhaga river which is renamed as “Chenab” in Jammu & Kashmir state. Jispa is small village, mainly serving as a convenient stop- over on the way to Ladakh.

Day 11:  Jispa

A well deserved rest day has been placed here after 2 challenging days of riding, especially because another 3 days of back- to- back riding follows. Here you’ll be able to snuggle in a soft, warm bed once again (and enjoy a hot shower) in a beautiful Guest House right on the banks of Bhaga, a river originating from Suraj Taal (Sun Lake) also near Baralacha La.

Day 12:  Jispa –  Sarchu (85 KM)

Once you leave Sarchu it becomes evident that you’re going deeper into the Himalayas and any sights of human settlement will become few & far between from here on, barring some temporary “tent restaurants”, truck stops & Indian Army barracks.  85km from Jispa, Sarchu is the last settlement (& check- point) in Himachal Pradesh. You reach here after crossing over Baralacha La (4930m), one of the many high passes on this tour & considered to get the maximum snowfall during the winters. You’ll also pass Suraj Taal, another of the high altitude lakes in the region. Accommodation is in comfortable tent camps.

Day 13: Sarchu – Tanglang La – Gya (190 KM)

Leaving after breakfast, you’ll first climb to the Nakee La (4900 M) & Lachlung La (5095 M) passes.  After a short break at Pang (4500 M) you’ll be riding across “The Morey Plains”, at an average height above 4700 M.  From here it’s a quick ascent to Tanglang La (5340 M), the highest pass you’ll be riding to on the tour.  Riding down the other side of the pass, you’ll arrive at the at a guesthouse/ homestay in a small Ladakhi village (at 4000 M).

Day 14: Gya – Sarchu  (190 KM)

Backtracking the same way, you’ll get to enjoy the same ride in reverse and view the Himalayan vistas from a different perspective.

Day 15: Sarchu – Sissu (130 KM)

Riding further south and back- tracking past Jispa, you’ll arrive at a small hamlet of Sissu, on the banks of the Chandra river. The camp here has a spectacular setting and offers the opportunity to take short hikes in the beautiful surroundings.

Day 16: Sissu – Manali (90 KM)

Riding past Gramphu, you leave the Chandra river behind as you ride up to Rohtang La (3978 M). The scenery starts to turn a lot greener as you head down the Rohtang pass to the town of Manali. Situated along the banks of River Beas at the northern end of the Kullu valley, Manali is a popular tourist destination attracting thousands of Indian tourists in the summers who want to beat the heat of the plains (back to civilization).

Day 17: Manali

Another day for relaxation, exploration or contemplation depending on your inclination.

Day 18: Manali – Tirthan Valley (105 KM)

Heading south from Manali, along the banks of the Beas, today’s ride takes you through some beautiful scenery. Riding down the Kullu valley past Naggar, you’ll leave behind the Beas and turn south- east towards Banjar at Aut. From here, a 28km journey lined with apple orchards leads you to your destination, a small hamlet called Sai Ropa, right on the banks of the Tirthan river and on the edge of “The Great Himalayan National Park”.

Day 19: Tirthan Valley

Sai Ropa and it’s surrounds offer some interesting experiences including fishing for trout in the Tirthan river, village walks and a short trek to a small but beautiful waterfall.

Day 20: Sai Ropa – Tattapani (130 KM)

The penultimate days ride is another spectacular journey over the Jalori Pass (3150 M), through the apple orchards, past several picturesque villages down to the village of Tattapani on the banks of river Sutlej. Tattapani (as the name in local dialect suggests) is famous for it’s a Sulphur “hot spring” and you shall get every chance to have a dip in its refreshing & rejuvenating waters at the resort you’ll be staying at.

Day 21: Tattapani – Shimla (60 KM)

You’ll saddle- up yet again and for the last time on this tour for your journey back to Shimla. The evening can be spent taking a stroll on The Mall and doing some souvenir shopping.  A farewell dinner is organized at a popular restaurant in the city.

Day 22: Shimla – New Delhi (By Car/Train)

It’s time to say your good- bye’s to fellow travelers & the Himalayas. You’ll be taking a 3-hour Car/MUV ride down the Shivalik range to its footsteps at Kalka from where an Express Train will take you to New Delhi (in about another 4 hours) which shall be the end of the tour. Dinner is served in the train & is inclusive in the fare. If you’ve purchased a “Farewell” add- on you’ll be transferred to the hotel where your accommodation has been arranged.

IMPORTANT ADVISORY:  Please note that touring in the Himalayas on a motorcycle involves considerable amount of riding on un-paved/dirt track/loose gravel/wet mud type surfaces as well as creek crossings, some of which can range between moderate to difficult. Riders need to have confidence in their riding skills/experience to be able to handle their bikes under such conditions. We would expect that you have at least 3-4 years (10,000 – 15,000 KM) riding experience (& some off road skills) before you consider registering for these tours. Also, since the routes involve being at high altitudes (above 3500 M), a certain level of health/fitness is a pre-requisite. Write to us if you have doubts or need further clarifications.

  • 21 nights accommodation* (Double or twin-bedded rooms or tents)
  • English-speaking ride leader & support crew
  • Breakfast & Dinners
  • Experienced motorcycle mechanics
  • Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 EFI rental motorcycle (including fuel)
  • Local sight-seeing (at selected locations)
  • Comfortable support vehicle with driver (for luggage, gear & occasional passengers)

*ACCOMMODATION

The regular price of the tour is per person on the basis of twin-share accommodation. “Twin Share” means sharing either a “double bedded” OR a “twin bedded” room with either your companion (wife, husband, partner, friend etc.) or another member of the tour of the same sex (as assigned by us). However, an unaccompanied participant’s “twin-share “ booking is accepted only on the condition that if no roommate is available, the participant accepts that a single accommodation price be charged over and above the tour price.

SINGLE ACCOMMODATION: If you don’t want to share a room you can purchase a single accommodation supplement (currently priced at approx. AU$ 975 ). In fact, we recommend booking a “single” accommodation if you’re a very light sleeper or a loud snorer yourself. However, Single Accommodation is subject to availability, so check with us and book early.

Important Info

If you have concerns regarding the standard of accommodation on our tours, we’d like to assure you that our selection of hotels will not disappoint you.  In fact, despite the limitations of this region (having seasonal tourism & remote locations) we have ensured that our riders get the most comfortable stay possible.  The reason for that is that we have carefully selected (and fine tuned) a good mix of heritage & modern hotels/ lodges/ holiday homes in the villages, towns & cities we stay at which have a good balance between the old charm and modern travelers needs. Some have been chosen for convenience, some for their spectacular location and some just to give you a taste of the “luxury” of the colonial era without sending our tour prices “through the roof”.  Even the high altitude camp(s) we’ve chosen are the best set-up accommodations  (almost “glamping” considering their location) all with ensuite toilets.  The reason we don’t share photos here is to keep the surprise element.  Nonetheless, we’ve provided a small “glimpse” of it on one of our Gallery webpage (scroll down to “Himalayan Accommodation” slide) as evidence 🙂

Our Himalayan tours start and end in New Delhi where the temperature can get up to 42°C in July.  However, as soon as you’re in Shimla (2200 M) on Day 01, you’ll feel a drastic change.  But even in the Himalayas the day temperature at low altitude can get up to 30°C.  And at high altitudes it can fall to freezing temps in the mornings and during the nights (0-5°C).  Rain is almost a certainty with snow being a possibility, specially while riding over high passes.  Statistically, on half our tours in the Himalayas, our riders are glad that they brought rain gear with them and on the other half they wonder why.

Bhutan is well-known for its dramatically varied topography. It boasts a great diversity of awe-inspiring landscapes of snow-clad mountains, lush valleys, dense forests and rushing streams that are considered to be abodes of the gods.To the south lies India; to the north Tibet. Having only opened its doors to the tourism in 1974, Bhutan has remained relatively isolated from western influence and enabled to maintain a rich traditional based Buddhist culture.

The autonomous region of Tibet is located at the main part of Qinghai-Tibet plateau, south-West frontier of China. Tibet borders with Sichuan, Yuannan, Qinghai and Xinjiang; to the south contiguous to India, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Burma, and bounded by Kashmir on the west. Open grassland, virgin forest, Tibet is also home for some of the world’s tallest mountains, with several of them making the top ten list with Mount Everest: the highest mountain on earth. With its particular dry climate, Tibet is worth a visit almost all year long. April to November are the milder months.

A splendid Nature, a history of several thousand years, an identity like no other: the Alps. Are you dreaming of a new experience? 2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan | First Ride Review

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Updating a popular and successful motorcycle model can be tricky for any brand’s design team. Mess with the components that enthusiasts consider off-limits, and the update takes a step backwards in the bike’s evolution, not to mention the risk of losing customers.

Royal Enfield confronted that fork in the road when it set out to improve its Himalayan , a lightweight adventure-tourer launched in 2018. With an MSRP of just $4,499, the Himalayan, with its spunky 411cc air-cooled Single, offered what few other ADV bikes could – an affordable price tag.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Adding to the Himalayan’s appeal was modest weight (439 pounds with its 4-gallon gas tank full), a low seat height (31.5 inches), and simplicity – anyone with basic mechanical skills could service it in their own garage or out in the field. Its curb appeal was unique, too, with a quasi-military-spec-meets-retro sensibility.

Read our Royal Enfield Himalayan vs BMW G 310 GS vs Kawasaki Versys-X 300 Comparison Review

The combined package added up to respectable global sales over the past few years. Linked by an enthusiastic following on social media, owners worldwide began sharing information about their Himalayan experiences, including road and trail tales, with many describing what they had learned about their Himalayan’s mechanical nuances and strong points. Soon enough the Himalayan Owners Group, connecting enthusiasts from all points via social media, gained prominence on Facebook.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

The folks at Royal Enfield paid attention. They added ABS in 2019. For 2022, updates include some modest functional/ergonomic changes and the addition of the company’s exclusive Tripper Navigation system, which debuted earlier this year on the Meteor 350 . Designed for the Google Maps platform, it’s a simple, intuitive turn-by-turn navigation pod mounted on the instrument cluster that pairs with a smartphone via the Royal Enfield app.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Royal Enfield hosted a press event for the new Himalayan in Temecula, a hot, dry area in Southern California known for its wineries. The surrounding countryside is laced with fine two-lane backroads and inviting two-track dirt byways – perfect conditions for a light adventure bike.

Besides the nav system, what else is new? The Himalayan’s saddle, still at 31.5 inches high, gets upgraded foam padding and a new suede-like cover that minimizes slip between the seat’s surface and the rider’s pants. Its small windscreen is slightly taller and wider to block more air. The front racks that double as crash guards for the gas tank and mounting points for auxiliary jerrycans were shortened 3.5 inches and reconfigured to offer more leg room for taller riders. The tail carrier rack gains an additional plate to accept heavier loads, and it’s slightly shorter to fit more flush with the seat’s tail section and make it easier for the rider to swing a leg over the motorcycle.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Time to mount up for a test ride. With my 30-inch inseam, I have no problem clearing my right leg over the reconfigured rear carrier rack, and I can get both feet flat on the ground. Thumbing the starter button brings the long-stroke Single (78 x 86mm bore/stroke) to life. It plays a tune at idle reminiscent of those big British thumper engines that populated the motorcycle landscape back in the ’50s and ’60s. A stylish upswept muffler keeps the Himalayan’s exhaust tone 21st-century friendly, yet still allows the cadence of the thumper to be enjoyed.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Find 1st gear and accelerate away smoothly. The upshift to 2nd could use some refinement, but shifting into higher gears feels trouble-free. The fuel-injected Single answers the call for more speed. Cruising along in top gear, the tachometer registers a mellow 4,000-4,500 rpm with the speedometer around 60-65 mph. Top speed is around 75 mph, and it doesn’t get there quickly. Claimed output is modest: 24.3 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 23.6 lb-ft of torque at the crank.

On the road, there’s a gentle but welcome rush of air on my shoulders, arms, and helmet. The revised windscreen keeps enough wind off my torso to allow for a relaxed posture in the sculpted saddle. After about an hour or so the low saddle begins to feel a little confining, and the small cockpit puts an acute bend in my knees. The new seat cover minimizes slip, but it also makes it harder to adjust one’s seating position. No problem, just stand up on the pegs for a quick stretch, which is good practice for the upcoming dirt tracks.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

As we leave the pavement, our ride leader signals for us to stop so he can demonstrate the switchable ABS procedure. With the ignition on and the bike in neutral, press the tiny button directly below the dash-mounted ABS light. It requires a hard push and a slow five-second count to initiate deactivation. Done correctly, the ABS light blinks, signaling that you now have complete control of the rear brake (ABS remains on at the front wheel). Rear-wheel ABS resets anytime the bike is restarted.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

Time to hit the trail, where the real fun begins. The bike’s low center of gravity, coupled with responsive steering and the deep-tread Pirelli MT60 tires, makes the bike feel responsive to natural terrain. The 21-inch front wheel rolls over obstacles with ease; it’s paired with a 17-inch rear, and the spoked rims require tubes. I skirt around rain gullies, power through stretches of deep sand, and maneuver over unfriendly rocks and ruts in the trail, thanks in part to 8.6 inches of ground clearance.

Braking power is modest, with a 2-piston front caliper squeezing a 300mm disc and a 1-piston rear caliper biting a 240mm disc. Suspension action is adequate. The fork offers no adjustability, the rear shock is adjustable for preload, and travel is 7.9 inches in front and 7.1 inches out back. The Himalayan feels rock solid, but also very much built to a price.

2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan review

After long and delightful stretches of wandering over hill and dale, we resume our ride on pavement and try out the Tripper nav system. As I did to reset the ABS, I turn the bike’s ignition off and back on. Having downloaded the app to my smartphone, I follow the prompts to switch on the turn-by-turn navigation pod that pairs the smartphone via the app. The small screen on the right side of the Himalayan’s sparse instrument cluster reveals road and turn directions as I continue the ride. It’s a handy feature on a bike that encourages exploration.

Royal Enfield has introduced several unique, attractively priced models over the past few years. Following the Himalayan’s debut in 2018, it rolled out a handsome pair of British-style Twins – the Continental GT café racer and INT 650 standard – in 2019, and then the Meteor 350 cruiser in 2021. Now and in the years ahead, we’ll see them evolve. The updates to the Himalayan have been incremental, but they make the small yet capable adventure-tourer even more practical. The price has increased along the way – MSRP is now $5,299 – but it remains a solid value and an appealing choice for a wide range of riders.

“modest weight” ?

That’s some creative writing.

Hello ..well nice motorcycle 🏍 ..I better get one .. and Right ✅ to Travel No insurance No license etc … good to see RIDER magazine still alive ..ihave boxes of old copies ..

I own one. I have’d Ninjas, Hurricane, and other larger displacement bikes, my Himalayan is a lot of fun. Very comfortable, super easy in corners, lots of torque, on 5th gear on a hill it sounds like a Marines chopper, i do 500km with one tank, and parked next to a 1250GS guess which bike people look and ask about. For $5k its tremendous value, as long as you don’t drive the highways. This bike is most comfortable up to 65mph.

Just a factual correction the ABS may have come in 2019 ( not sure) but switchable ABS was definitely end of 2020, along with hazard lights and a few other bits and bobs.

Are the tires still Pirelli? I thought the ’22 model Himalayans are now all equipped with Ceat brand tires.

They are equipped with Ceat tires now. The Tires aren’t great for road grip but Ceats are known to last relatively longer. I’ve not had experience with Ceats on a motorcycle (thankfully) but I did have those on my car during my India Days

I have Ceat Zoom Plus tires on my Meteor 350; they’ve been good so far, but they’re total street tires.

I own a ’21 Himalayan. The advice I received before I bought it is advice I would give any prospective buyer – buy it and love it for what it is, and you will be happy. Avoid false expectations and comparisons, and it may surprise you the way it surprised me.

It accelerates better than its numbers suggest. Rev it to 4000 in each gear, and you will be well ahead of traffic and at 50+ mph before you know it. Being a two-valve single, it takes a little extra time to spool up, but you get a pleasant push of torque while building up to peak horsepower. The handling is better than expected, and its light weight makes it easy to toss around at 50 or 5 mph. The ride quality is decent – not great, but better than you might be expecting. Cruising back roads at 50-60 mph is where the bike is happiest. Your reward is a relaxed ride minus the desire to wind it out (because that is what you doing by just riding it at a normal pace), and 70 miles per gallon (US) on 87 octane gas.

Maintenance and service is quite easy.

Please note these bikes are cold-blooded … it is a challenge to keep them running in temps below 50 F for the first few minutes.

My other bikes include a 2016 Gold Wing, 2015 Can Am Spyder.

Thanks for concise honest feedback. Refreshing!

I love my 2021 Himalayan. I am not an off-roader and use this for pleasure on back country roads. I have been averaging 72mpg. I echo the bike feels happiest at the 60-65mph range. I mostly commute to work with it and get a big smile on my face when I hop on to head home. It’s style fits me well… enjoy it for what it is! A fun get-around bike.

Owned a 2021. It was fun BUT the components were not well built. The compass was never accurate. Even after run in, it would not start without several tries and holding the throttle to keep it going—the choke seemed to do nothing. The handlebars easily bent after a spill in mud—not on road or rocks—mud bent the handlebars. The tip came off the spark plug and lodged inside the spark wire during routine maintenance. And last but not least—screws stripped with some regularity using similar force to what I would use on other bikes without issue. That said, I really liked it, but those items start to become quite annoying and in the long run prompted me to move the bike along to someone else. I’d be willing to try again if the component quality was improved.

Why not just get a used Vstrom?

Self-guided tour info

We are located in Barcelona – Just 2 minutes walk from a main station near the center. So very easy to get to from the Barcelona Airport El Prat (BCN)

Before the tour, we will send you the link and password, to the Rider Information page. We also send via email the tour satnav GPX files and tour PDF, which contains hotel info, and also information on Riding in Europe and what to bring/pack.

On arriving in Barcelona we recommend the NH Numancia hotel which is a good choice as it’s near the center and easy to get to from the airport plus only a short from our base. We also recommend the Ibis or the Holiday Inn. Both are located in Molins del Rey, which is outside the city but has a line into the center and not too far from the airport 15 minutes by taxi. Also, there are a few good restaurants/bars which are open until late nearby for something to eat in the old town center.

The hotels in Barcelona are not included before the start of the tour and after the tour finishes. As it depends on when you would like to arrive, the length of stay and your budget plus distance to the center of the city.

Rick + Mary USA

Our tour guide, Jay, made our trip memorable. We had a wonderful time. We rode a wide variety of routes with breathtaking scenery, fun and challenging roads. The selection of restaurants for our daily lunch stops was excellent. The food was great and very reasonably priced. Our nightly accommodations were all in great locations and met all of our needs. We stopped at a variety of interesting places during the tour which enhanced our experience and increased our understanding of the region. Jay has done considerable research on the region, its roads and places to visit. We highly recommend this tour!

Overland Motorcycle Tours guided us along the best roads the Pyrenees have to offer. All the hotels were excellent with consideration for secure parking. GPS routes are provided so you can find your own way if you prefer. Lunch stops away from tourist areas and interesting visits along the way enhanced the experience. You do need to be ready for some fairly long days in the saddle but it is well worth the effort. Thanks to Jay and Alan. Recommended.

Fantastic tour organised by Jay. Excellent coordination and planning resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable 8 days riding through the Pyrenees across numerous, beautiful mountain passes and flowing valley roads. All the hotels we stayed in were excellent with secure parking for our bikes. Two of our group (including myself) opted to go via Brittany Ferries on our own bikes, which worked really well with a relaxing night in a comfotable cabin. Fly & ride also an option. By far the best and esiest way to enjoy the best roads in the Pyrenees thanks to Overland’s choice of routes, which Jay has gone to great efforts to perfect!

My friend Marc and I just returned from this tour. We went for the self guide option. Everything is said in the title of the tour and when Jay says ‘mountains all the way’ he isn’t kidding. Every day you are treated to amazing roads, peaks and spectacular views. If you love riding your machine you will love the switchbacks, gradients, mountain passes and summits. The selection of hotels was good and we enjoyed a comfortable stay in each location. Best of all is Jay’s attention to detail. In advance of the trip he prepared bespoke Sat Nav routes for us using the Harley-Davidson online ride planner and these routes worked flawlessly. From point A to point B each day and never missed a beat. At any point during the trip when we had a question Jay was there on WhatsApp within minutes to provide immediate assistance, it was like the ultimate ‘Phone a friend’ ?. We both thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would definitely book again with Jay without hesitation.

Mike Fly-ride

Fly-ride Tour Leader Jay has clearly invested many hours developing fantastic tour routes and selecting a neat variety of hotels. The small group size and Jay’s logistical planning resulted in efficient travel and enabled everyone to ride at their desired pace. Most importantly, Jay’s positive attitude, helpfulness, and constant smile made for a most pleasant experience.

What is riding a Royal Enfield like?

Riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan is a one of a kind experience. Boasting no-nonsense looks, a little rough around the edges but purposeful in every way, the Royal Enfield is a punchy, torquey machine designed to take on any road conditions, any terrain, and any altitude. Our Royal Enfield motorcycle tours are designed to take you off the beaten path and deep into the Himalayan backcountry exploring some of India’s most awe-inspiring landscapes, and this is the bike to do it, even if you haven’t ridden roads and terrain like that before.

The single-cylinder thumper breaks all stereotypes, and it’s not the bike that dictates the adventure – it’s the rider. With a 400cc engine that delivers consistent torque, a minimalistic design, and a low seat, you simply point the front wheel, and the bike will take you anywhere whether it’s a series of hairpins and tight corners, busy town traffic, or a rough section of the road. The no-ABS, no-nonsense approach is what makes the Royal Enfield Himalayan a perfect bike for motorcycle adventures in India and beyond.

Where are the best Royal Enfield motorcycle tours?

As the name suggests, the best Royal Enfield motorcycle tours are in the Himalayas. India and Nepal are the two most iconic Royal Enfield destinations: simply put, the Himalayas Mountains are the bike’s natural habitat. Beloved by local adventure riders and travellers alike, the Himalayas provide the perfect playground for Royal Enfield motorcycle tours with countless scenic roads, breath-taking mountain landscapes, adrenaline-inducing twisties, and incredible cultural experiences along the way. Going on our Royal Enfield tours, expect high-altitude mountain passes, jaw-dropping views of the snow-capped Himalayas, steep and narrow roads, and a no-frills, full-on adventure you’ll never forget.

5 Reasons To Ride On A Royal Enfield Motorcycle Tour

1. the bikes.

There’s just something about the Royal Enfield Himalayan that’s part nostalgic, part adventure-inspiring, and part utilitarian. Our Royal Enfield motorcycle tours are more of a two-wheeled expedition rather than a cruisey ride, and the bikes are part of the package as much as the roads and the scenery. Riding in the Himalayas, you need to always expect the unexpected, but the Royal Enfield is a bike that will inspire confidence no matter where the journey takes you. Rugged looks and the “function-over-form” design aside, Royal Enfield is a forgiving, trusty machine that’s easy to get used to from day one. Whether you’re weaving in and out of traffic, leaning into corners, manoeuvring in tight spaces, or tackling a bumpy section, the Royal Enfield is up for the task. Motorcycle tours in the Himalayas, especially if it’s your first time traveling outside the Western world, are an assault on all the senses, and the Royal Enfield is the perfect bike to help you get into the flow fast and start riding like a local in no time.

2. The Roads

Forget highways and long hauls on straight stretches: Royal Enfield motorcycle tours are all about those mountain roads twisting and turning with every scenic mile. The Himalayas Mountains are among the world’s most sought-after adventure destinations because of the insane roads and passes you’ll be riding. Narrow, two-lane roads hugging mountain faces and skirting cliff edges, steep climbs, some of the highest motorable passes on the planet, and rough sections leading into the secluded Himalayan valleys and gorges are all on the menu. Be careful with that throttle, though: while most of the Himalayan roads offer plenty of good-looking corners and fun sweepers, there may be people, domestic animals, and slow-moving tuk tuks appearing from nowhere, so take it easy and enjoy the views!

3. The Adventure

Nothing inspires the sense of freedom and adventure as much as the thought of riding the Himalayas on a Royal Enfield. All our Himalayan tours are carefully planned out and well-prepared, but riding India and Nepal, there’s never a dull moment: varying altitude and weather, ever-changing road conditions, and diverse scenery means no two days on your Royal Enfield motorcycle tour will be the same. Prepare for a true expedition as you’ll be traveling some of the most rugged mountain ranges in the world, tackling a plethora of adrenaline-inducing roads, and fully immersing yourself in the Himalayan culture every step of the way.

4. The Landscapes

The majestic Himalayas Mountains are often dubbed the Roof of the World, and the riding here does feel like you’ve entered a different sphere altogether. Snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, high-altitude plateaus and cold deserts, stunning valleys and narrow mountain passes revealing spectacular views promise scenery that’s simply out of this world. To add to the mind-blowing vistas, Himalayan landscapes are dotted with tiny mountain villages and towns, ancient Buddhist monasteries and temples perched atop cliffs and hills and colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind marking holy Buddhist sites here and there. Even for well-traveled riders, few places in the world can prepare you for the full effect of the Himalayan scenery that awaits on our Royal Enfield motorcycle tours.

5. The Culture

All our tours are designed to immerse you in the local ways of life as much as possible, but when it comes to Royal Enfield expeditions, the cultural experiences will leave you speechless. Northern India and Nepal are much closer to the Tibetan culture rather than the colourful chaos of Delhi, and riding here, it feels like you’re visiting a truly special place. Don’t be surprised to see traditional robe-clad Buddhist monks strolling casually along the town streets, meeting curious and friendly locals always eager for a chat, and sample mouth-watering local cuisine along the way. The Himalayas host a myriad of ancient Buddhist, Indian, Tibetan, and Nepalese cultures with traditions going millennia-deep, and going on a Royal Enfield motorcycle tour, you’ll get a glimpse into a different, more colourful, and much older world that’s rapidly disappearing in the West.

  • Casque : Arai Tour-X5
  • Veste : Bering Siberia
  • Pantalon : Spidi Outlander H2OUT
  • Bottes : Forma Boots ADV Waterproof

  • Vraie polyvalence
  • Comportement dynamique sain
  • Moto facile

On aime moins

  • Vibrations à haut régime
  • Moteur un peu creux à bas régime
  • Frein avant trop progressif pour la route
