How to Obtain a SIM card in Saudi Arabia as a tourist

Procedure to obtain a sim card in saudi arabia as a tourist.

Are you planning for performing the Hajj or Umrah in Saudi Arabia? Or do you intend to visit the nation to take in its many historical or natural attractions? If so, you might be interested in finding out if you can purchase a local SIM card in Saudi Arabia so you can make calls and maintain an online connection. Read more :  Final Exit Visa of Saudi Arabia and its 6 strict conditions

If you frequently use your phone, purchasing a local SIM card in Saudi Arabia can be more cost-effective than enabling roaming services through your current telecoms service provider.

How to get a SIM card in Saudi Arabia?

– Any telecom company that provides plans exclusively for travelers and visitors is where you can purchase a SIM card. You can do this right away at the airport or later on in your journey by going to any of the telecom company kiosks or stores. Like and Follow Saudi Expatriates on Facebook

– You will notice kiosks for mobile service providers like STC, Zain, and Mobily as soon as you reach the arrival hall at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, for instance, if you are travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj or Umrah. As an alternative, you could discover a cell store in your neighborhood that is authorized to sell SIM cards, or you could visit a kiosk in a mall close to your hotel.

The following Saudi telecom companies provide unique SIM card bundles for tourists :

1. STC (Sawa) :

No matter if they are travelling for pleasure, business, the Hajj or Umrah, tourists can use the Sawa visitor SIM card. Visitor packages begin at 35 Saudi Riyals. Recommend : How to check STC balance on your phone

– Visit any of the STC locations, kiosks, or authorized mobile stores throughout the nation to obtain a SIM card. By clicking on this link “ Sawa Ziyara “, you can also reserve a number for the visitor queue online.

– However, the STC website states that you must go to an STC sales office to present your fingerprints in order to activate your SIM card once you are in Saudi Arabia.

2. Mobily :

Tourists and pilgrims in Saudi Arabia can purchase a “Visitors’ package” from Mobily for as little as 30 Saudi Riyals. Recommend : Mobily useful service codes

– Visit any of the Mobily locations, kiosks, or authorized mobile stores throughout the nation to obtain a SIM card.

Visitors can purchase packages of sim card in Saudi Arabia from Zain starting at 34.5 Saudi Riyals. See Also : How to check Zain balance

– While the above-mentioned businesses sell SIM card packages specifically for tourists, you may also want to look into other Saudi Arabian telecoms carriers like Virgin, mobily and Lebara that offers prepaid SIM card possibilities. Just have a look, if any center is near to you.

– While the initial packages offered by all the telecom providers start at somewhat more or less than 30 riyals, it is still advisable to compare the various packages that are being provided. This is because you might be able to find a plan for flexible calling minutes or an internet data bundle that is more expensive but offers you a superior deal.

Required documents in order to get a SIM card in Saudi Arabia :

1. A Passport copy.

2. Visa number or border number. Read : Procedure to check border number of a Saudi visitor

3. Fingerprint for biometric registration.

4. Payment of fee as per the selected plan.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Saudi Arabia in 2024

stc saudi tourist sim

If you plan on visiting Saudi Arabia, having a sim card is essential for seamless connectivity. Access to the internet while traveling can greatly assist in navigating unfamiliar cities. With internet access, you can easily locate top-notch restaurants, find directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, and even share photos with your family in real-time.

Although international roaming is an option, the charges can quickly accumulate, making it more cost-effective to opt for either an eSIM or a local sim card with local phone rates. Fortunately, obtaining an eSIM or local sim card in Saudi Arabia is a hassle-free process.

To help you make an informed decision, this comprehensive guide provides up-to-date pricing information and helps determine the best sim card option for your specific needs.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in saudi arabia for tourists.

All of the main mobile network operators offer fairly competitive tourist sim cards in Egypt, however, I recommend purchasing a local sim card from either Virgin Mobile or STC.

Virgin Mobile offers the most data at the lowest prices and uses the STC network, which is the most comprehensive and reliable network in Saudi Arabia. For just 55 SAR you can get access to 13GB data which is an amazing deal!

If you prefer the convenience of an eSim (you should, they’re much better), then Airalo’s Egypt eSim is a pretty good deal that allows you to purchase just the amount of data you require. It operates on Zain’s network which is almost as extensive as STCs. For around 50 SAR (similar price to the Virgin Mobile sim above) you get 5GB of data which is plenty for most travellers.

Saudi Arabia Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Saudi Arabia costs 55 SAR in June 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Saudi Arabia will cost between $5 USD and $26 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Saudi Arabia which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $15.50 USD.

Saudi Arabia Sim Card Providers

In Saudi Arabia, the main SIM card providers offering reliable services to millions of users are STC, Virgin Mobile, and Zain. With its strong brand presence, Virgin Mobile, in partnership with STC, offers innovative packages and digital services, focusing on a seamless customer experience. Zain, another significant player, delivers competitive plans and high-speed internet connectivity, appealing to a large customer base. With fierce competition between these providers, customers in Saudi Arabia can enjoy a diverse range of services and packages to cater to their connectivity needs.

The sim cards come with generous data allowances, allowing visitors to stay connected, browse the internet, and share their experiences with friends and family. Virgin Mobile Saudi Arabia Tourist Sim Price

The price of a Virgin Mobile tourist sim card in Saudi Arabia is 55 SAR.

The plan offered by Virgin Mobile stores offers 13GB 4G data valid for 30 days.

The price of a Zain tourist sim card in Saudi Arabia is 80.5 SAR.

The plan offered by Zain stores includes 10GB data + 5GB social media data + 150 minutes valid for 4 weeks.

How to Get a Sim Card in Saudi Arabia

Identify mobile providers: STC, Virgin Mobile and Zain are your best options in Saudi Arabia.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Saudi Arabia

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Saudi Arabia at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Saudi Arabia then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Saudi Arabia have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as STC, Virgin Mobile and Zain. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Saudi Arabia are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Saudi Arabia with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Saudi Arabia eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Saudi Arabia. The Airalo Saudi Arabia eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $15.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Saudi Arabia without having to venture outside.

Airalo Saudi Arabia

Our preferred eSim provider in Saudi Arabia is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Saudi Arabia and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Saudi Arabia eSim uses the Zain network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Zain networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Saudi Arabia.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Saudi Arabia eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $5 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $8 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $11 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $15.50 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $26 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $15.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Saudi Arabia

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Saudi Arabia eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Saudi Arabia eSim uses the Saudi Telecom Companynetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Saudi Arabia

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Saudi Arabia eSim:

3GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $34 USD 6GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $49 USD

What is an eSim?

The eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that comes already installed in a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike the traditional physical SIM cards, the eSIM does not require any physical insertion or removal process.

Instead, the eSIM is built right into the device’s hardware and can be activated and programmed remotely by a mobile network operator. This allows users to easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of physically swapping out SIM cards.

The eSIM technology brings numerous benefits, including convenience, flexibility, and user-friendliness, particularly for frequent travelers or those who frequently switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to buy and insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on one device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a provided QR code or manually input the activation details given by their mobile network operator. After activation, the device can connect to the chosen mobile network and access voice calls, data services, and messaging features, just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

There are several benefits to using an eSIM:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans, which is especially helpful for frequent travelers. – Dual SIM functionality: Allows for two active mobile numbers on the same device, useful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. – Space-saving: Eliminates the need for a physical SIM card slot, freeing up space within the device for other components or making devices smaller. – Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely, without needing a physical SIM card or store visit. – Future-proofing: As more networks support eSIMs, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures access to new services and offerings.

Overall, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Buy a Visitor SIM Card in Saudi Arabia

Introduction: Visitor SIM Card

Staying connected on your trip to Saudi Arabia is important. A visitor SIM card is the easiest way to do this. This guide will give you all the information you need to choose a visitor SIM card.

Choosing a Provider:

Saudi Arabia has three main mobile network providers.

  • STC (Saudi Telecom Company)

Comparing Packages:

Before you arrive, research the available packages offered by each provider. Here are some key factors to consider:

  • Data Allowance: Estimate your data needs based on your planned usage (browsing, social media, streaming). Packages range from basic options to generous data allowances.
  • Validity Period: Choose a plan that coincides with your trip duration. Options typically range from a few days to a month.
  • Call Rates: If making calls is important, compare call rates within Saudi Arabia and internationally (if needed) offered by different packages.
  • Price: Packages vary in price depending on data allowance and validity.

Purchasing Your Visitor SIM Card in Saudi Arabia

You can buy a SIM card from any telecommunications company that has plans just for travelers and guests. You can do this right away at the airport, or you can do it later by going to any of the booths or stores of the telecom companies.

In order to purchase a SIM card, you can go to any of the Mobily sites, kiosks, or approved mobile stores that are spread all around the country.

Purchasing Your SIM Card:

  • Airport: Convenient but often comes with a premium price.
  • Provider Stores: Widely available throughout the country, offering a wider selection of plans.
  • Online: Purchase in advance for a smoother arrival, but check for potential delivery fees.

When you get to the arrivals hall at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, for example, you will see kiosks for cell service providers like  STC, Zain,  and  Mobily . This is true if you are going to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj or Umrah. You could instead find a cell phone store near you that is licensed to sell SIM cards, or you could go to a booth in a mall near your hotel.

Require Documents:

  • Passport: Required for identification and SIM card registration.
  • Visa: Proof of your legal entry into Saudi Arabia.
  • Payment Method: Be prepared to pay with cash or credit card.

Here’s a quick comparison of the major providers

Visiting Saudi Arabia? How to get a SIM card for Hajj, Umrah

Living in uae.

Special SIM card packages for visitors and tourists can help you stay connected

STOCK Saudi / Jeddah / airport

Dubai: Are you planning to visit Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah? Or do you plan to make a trip to the country to explore its many historical or natural attractions? If so, you might be wondering whether you can get a local SIM card, to be able to make calls and stay connected online.

While one option is to enable roaming services from your current telecommunications service provider, it might be more budget-friendly to buy a local SIM card if you are a heavy phone user.

How to get a SIM card in Saudi Arabia

You can choose to get a SIM card from any of the telecom providers that offer packages specifically for visitors and tourists. This can be done at the airport itself, or later on during your trip, by visiting any of the kiosks or stores of the telecom companies.

For example, if you are going to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah and land at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, you will see kiosks of mobile service providers like STC, Zain and Mobily as soon as you enter the arrival hall. Alternatively, you may also visit a shopping mall near your hotel to visit a kiosk, or find a mobile shop in your neighbourhood that is authorised to sell SIM cards.

  • Want to visit Saudi Arabia? Here are six types of visit visas

The following Saudi telecommunications service providers offer special SIM card packages for visitors:

1. Saudi Telecommunication Company (STC) – Sawa visitor line

The Sawa visitor SIM card is available to visitors, whether they are on vacation, a business trip, Hajj or Umrah. Packages for visitors start from Saudi Riyal 35 (Dh34.26).

To get a SIM card, you simply need to visit any of the STC branches, kiosks and authorised mobile shops in the country. You may also book a number for the visitor line online, by visiting this link: https://www.stc.com.sa/content/stc/sa/en/personal/mobile/packages/sawa-ziyara.html

However, to activate your SIM card, once you land in Saudi Arabia, you will need to visit an STC sales office to provide your fingerprints, according to the STC website.

2. Mobily – Visitors package

Mobily offers ‘Visitors’ package’ to tourists and pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, with packages starting from Saudi Riyal 30 (Dh29.37).

To get a SIM card, you simply need to visit any of the Mobily branches, kiosks and authorised mobile shops in the country.

Zain offers SIM card packages for visitors, starting from Saudi Riyal 34.5 (Dh33.77).

While the companies mentioned above offer SIM card packages especially for tourists, Saudi Arabia also has other telecommunications providers, like Virgin mobile and Lebara, that offer prepaid SIM card options, which you may consider as well.

How to select a plan

While all the companies have starting packages that cost slightly more or less than Dh30, it is advisable to look at the different packages that are being offered. This is because you may be able to get a plan that is more expensive but provides you with a better package, for either flexible calling minutes or internet data package.

Documents required

In order to get a SIM card, you would only need to provide the following:

• Passport copy • Visa number/border number

You will also be asked to provide your fingerprints for biometric registration. Once the process is complete and you have made the payment, according to the plan you choose.

Saudi Arabia SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 19, 2024 | Asia , Middle-East , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Saudi Arabia soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Saudi Arabia SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Saudi Arabia in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Saudi Arabia.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Arabic – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia SIM cards

Best SIM Cards In Saudi Arabia

If you’re traveling in Saudi Arabia, we recommend using a SIM card from Virgin Mobile, Jawwy, STC, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to the Middle East, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Middle Eastern countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Saudi Arabia

You can either buy a Saudi Arabia prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a Middle East prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Virgin Mobile, Jawwy, and STC.

Saudi Arabia

Virgin Mobile SIM Cards

Virgin Mobile offers several different types of prepaid plans:

  • 1 GB, valid for 10 days for SAR 12.99 ($3.46)
  • 2.5 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 39.99 ($10.66)
  • 13 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 55.00 ($14.66)
  • 40 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 85 ($22.66)
  • Unlimited data, valid for 30 days for SAR 325 ($86.63)

Jawwy SIM Cards

Jawwy has one prepaid plan available:

  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 69 ($18.39)

STC SIM Cards

STC offers several main SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • 4 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 74 ($19.73)
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 115 ($30.65)
  • 40 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 195.50 ($52.11)
  • 80 GB, valid for 30 days for SAR 276 ($73.57)
  • Unlimited, valid for 30 days for SAR 414 ($110.35)

Overall, we think Virgin Mobile is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person.

That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Saudi Arabia Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. Saudi Arabia is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid card on SimOptions .

They currently offer one package that covers Saudi Arabia:

  • 10 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Saudi Arabia or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for the Middle East.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Saudi Arabia

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone.

If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Saudi Arabia.

  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip.

In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Saudi Arabia

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Saudi Arabia

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card or even an eSIM for your travels in Saudi Arabia is pretty straightforward.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in the Middle East without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a Middle East or global plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Saudi Arabia if you wish to have data upon your arrival.

This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Why buying a Saudi Arabia sim card

stc saudi tourist sim

Traveling with a working data connection on your phone is simply much more convenient. Think about getting directions from Google Maps, ordering a taxi through an app, staying in touch with friends and family back home, emergencies, checking your banking apps, etc.

Don’t rely on WiFi as it might be slow or not working at all and another  reminder that surfing the web on public WiFi is through an UNSECURED connection. The use of a VPN is recommended to protect your data.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends buying an STC sim card at Jeddah Airport. STC has great tourist sim card deals and the best 5G network coverage in Saudi Arabia. For 86.25 SAR ($23 USD) you get 20 GB data and 500 minutes.

However, if you just need a little bit of data to use WhatsApp or for checking your email then an e-sim card for Saudi Arabia will be a great solution for you. It only takes 2 minutes to set it up and you already get 1 GB data for just $5 USD.

Where to buy a sim card at Jeddah Airport

stc saudi tourist sim

As I mentioned before buying a sim card for Saudi Arabia at Jeddah Airport is easy. After you picked up your luggage and walk through the last baggage customs check you end up in the arrival hall.

At first you follow the signs for exit and you will get to the main hall. When everyone starts harassing you for a taxi you know you are on the right track. In the main arrival hall you will find convenience stores, coffee shops, ATM's and some fast food restaurants left and right and right in front of you there is a massive aquarium.

Right behind this incredible fish tank there is the exit towards the train station and there you will also find all the sim card shops of the mobile internet operators in Saudi Arabia: STC, Zain and Mobily.

In my YouTube video above you see more about my experiences arriving and buying a sim card at Jeddah International Airport. The video is from a previous trip, but a great reference of what it is like arriving at Jeddah Airport.

Apart from the prices, most things stayed the same, but therefore I always recommend to read blogs over watching YouTube videos. Blogs can be updated, vlogs can't. I traveled to Jeddah again in June 2024.

Prices prepaid sim cards Jeddah Airport in 2024

Great thing about tourists sim cards in Saudi Arabia is that regardless if you buy your sim card at the airport or in a phone store in the city center, prices are the exact same.

The below prices and info are updated in June 2024: $1 USD = 3.75 SAR and 1 SAR = $0.27 USD.

Zain prepaid sim card

Here are the most common Zain prepaid sim card plans for tourists in 2024, valid for 28 days:

  • 70 GB data + Unlimited Social Media + 1,400 minutes = 180 SAR - $48 USD

For more prepaid sim card plans from Zain see the picture above. At the Zain store at Jeddah Airport they offer physical prepaid sim cards as well as e-sim cards for tourists.

Mobily prepaid sim card

At the Mobily kiosk they tried selling me the sim card deal for 115 SAR, but they also have a cheaper option available. Here are the most common Mobily prepaid sim card plans for tourists:

  • 10 GB data + 10 GB Social Media + 500 minutes for 28 days = 86.25 SAR
  • 25 GB data + 25 GB Social Media + 500 minutes for 28 days = 115 SAR

  • 4 GB data + 4 GB Social Media + 120 minutes = 74.75 SAR - $19.9 USD

  • 10 GB data + 15 GB Social Media + 300 minutes = 115 SAR

Best Saudi Arabia sim card at Jeddah Airport

After comparing the prepaid sim cards from Zain, Mobily and STC at Jeddah Airport Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that STC has the best prepaid sim cards for tourists in Saudi Arabia.

Not only does STC has the best prepaid sim card plans, but also the starting price of the sim cards for tourists is much lower. Keep in mind that the prices are not displayed and the (quite arrogant STC staff) will push to sell you the expensive prepaid sim card plans.

But if you just need a little bit of data to stay connected then there is no need to buy a sim card at Jeddah Airport. Order an e-sim card for Saudi Arabia on the internet. You can already get 1 GB data for just $5 USD.

However, the STC prepaid sim card plans offer more value for money than e-sim cards. On top of that STC also has the best 4G/5G network in Saudi Arabia. So for traveling in Saudi Arabia STC is the best sim card in 2024.

For more info about the 4G/5G network coverage in Saudi Arabia, including network coverage maps across the country check out my extensive article about the best sim card for Saudi Arabia in 2024 .

My experience buying a sim card at Jeddah Airport

Here are my experiences from 2021 when I traveled to Jeddah for the first time and from my last trip to Saudi in 2024.

In my vlog you have probably already seen how easy it is to get a local prepaid sim card for Saudi Arabia at Jeddah Airport. Walking out of the terminal and walking directly into the mobile internet stores made it super easy. A couple minutes after I put my new STC Saudi Arabia sim card in my phone I was online.

You get a welcome message displaying your mobile number.

stc saudi arabia remaing balance

What I found very convenient is that STC would regularly send me text messages with a link to check my remaining balance. Although the message is in Arabic, you only have to click on the link in the message and it takes you to your profile on the STC website without the need to login with a password.

During my almost 2 weeks traveling in Saudi Arabia I had a 5G connection pretty much everywhere. During the high speed train ride from Jeddah to Medina there was mostly a phone signal. Sometimes it was 3G or 4G. Still pretty impressive phone reception though in the middle of the desert.

Lately in February 2024 I visited Jeddah again and this time I got myself a 1 GB data e-sim card from  Airalo  for $5 USD. Just for the sake of being online as soon as the plane lands.

On arrival I wanted to buy an e-sim card from STC but unfortunately they ran out of e-sim cards and only had physical prepaid sim cards available. Unlucky me because my iPhone 15 Pro Max does not have a sim card slot anymore so I had to wait till the next day and visit an STC store in Jeddah city center.

A bit of a hassle, but luckily I had my Airalo e-sim card with 1 GB data to get me through the first 24 hours.

I hope all the above tips for buying a sim card for Saudi Arabia at Jeddah Airport were helpful. Please leave me a comment below if you have any questions and I will try to help you out.

Things to consider when choosing a SIM card in Saudi Arabia:

  • Data usage: How much data do you plan on using? If you are a heavy data user, then you will need a plan with a high data allowance.
  • Network coverage: Where will you be travelling in Saudi Arabia? If you will be visiting remote areas, then you will need a SIM card with good network coverage.
  • Price: How much are you willing to spend on a SIM card? There are a variety of plans available, so you can find one that fits your budget.

How can one get a SIM Card in Saudi Arabia?

To get a SIM card in Saudi Arabia, there are a few options available:

Some Saudi Arabian mobile operators offer the option to purchase SIM cards online. This gives you the flexibility to research and compare plans from the comfort of your own home.

To buy a SIM card, you'll need to provide your passport and some cash ( in Saudi Arabian riyals) . Additionally, you'll need to provide your contact information, such as your email address and phone number.

Saudi Arabia e-SIM for Visitors

Saudi Arabia has introduced e-SIM technology for visitors, allowing them to use e-SIM cards instead of physical SIM cards in compatible devices. Here's a short summary:

Saudi Arabia e-SIM for Visitors:

  • Saudi Arabia offers e-SIM technology for visitors, allowing them to use e-SIM cards in compatible devices.
  • With e-SIM, visitors can enjoy the convenience of remotely activating and managing their mobile plans without the need for a physical SIM card.
  • Visitors can use e-SIM cards from local mobile operators or global e-SIM providers to access voice, data, and messaging services while in Saudi Arabia.
  • E-SIM cards are especially beneficial for travellers who have dual SIM smartphones, as they can use their primary SIM and an e-SIM simultaneously.
  • It's essential for visitors to ensure that their devices support e-SIM technology and to check with the local mobile operators for available e-SIM plans and activation procedures.

Please note that developments might have occurred since my last update, and it's crucial to verify the current status of e-SIM services for visitors in Saudi Arabia through official sources or by contacting local mobile operators.

- Lebara Mobile is a global mobile operator with a presence in Saudi Arabia, catering to the needs of international visitors.

As the telecommunications landscape can change over time, it's recommended to check with the operators for the latest plans and offers before making a decision. Additionally, verify the compatibility of your device with e-SIM technology if you wish to explore e-SIM options in Saudi Arabia.
