sunshine coast reef trip

Bowen is Australia’s mango capital so naturally it has a big mango that you can pose in front of. Bowen is a coastal rural town with wide streets, wooden Queenslander homes, a slow pace, and friendly locals. There are plenty of things to do in Bowen. Maybe checkout Bowen Hill Lookout, swim at Horseshoe Bay or enjoy a long lunch at Cove restaurant.

Home Hill is another great stop with a great selection of cafes and restaurants. Many travelers take a break here to walk across the Burdekin Bridge, the districts’ best known landmark – longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge. To walk across the famous landmark, park near the Lion’s Diorama at the southern approach to the bridge and head to the pedestrian walkway.

Once you reach Townsville, you’ll want to check out Magnetic Island. There are 18 daily ferry services that only take about 20 minutes to reach the island. Pre-European settlement, it was known as “Yunbenun” by the Island’s traditional inhabitants. When Captain Cook discovered the Island in 1770, he believed it had a magnetic force causing interference with his compass, hence the name Magnetic Island. Subsequent tests disproved his theory but the name remains.

Running from Cairns to Cardwell, the Cassowary Coast is one of the undiscovered gems of Queensland, a quiet stretch of coastline bordered by the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Mission Beach (actually four separate towns spread along a 14km stretch of palm-fringed beach) is at its heart. Despite its popularity, the town has retained a dreamy, laid-back vibe and the welcoming locals are never outnumbered by tourists.

The area around Mission Beach is home to one of the highest concentrations of the endangered cassowary in Australia. These large flightless birds can be spotted walking through fields and gardens, and even occasionally swimming across rivers.

You’ll see lots of roadside fruit stalls around the region. Take what you like and leave your money in the honesty box. This region is the banana capital of Australia, so delicious bananas are usually plentiful.

The Mission Beach Markets are held on the first and third Sunday of the month right beside the beach, which has fantastic views of the offshore islands. You’ll find everything from local produce and plants to second-hand clothes, crafts, books and jewelry.

Fishing Charters Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Reefs

Deep sea fishing co. sunshine coast - a diversity of sunshine coast reefs.

sunshine coast reef trip

The sunshine coast Queensland has a solid reputation for the diversity of fishing available, there is always opportunities to catch a number of quality reef fish such as snapper, pearl perch, sweetlip, red emperor, tuskfish and Maori cod. Then with the change of season brings along pelajics such as long mackerel run, kingfish, Mahi Mahi, wahoo, cobia, amberjack.

All our charters with Deep sea fishing co Sunshine Coast offer offshore fishing up to 30 mile offshore depending on trip duration, see below a few reef descriptions that has been put together through our crews local knowledge and experience.

Barwon Banks

Location: S26º32’616” E153º31’964”

Depth: 35-120m

Distance: 43km

The ‘Banks’ is a large reef system that covers around 23km running north south. Any number of reef species and larger pelagics can be caught here, kingfish, amberjack, cobia, cod, snapper, pearl perch, tuskfish, iodine bream, hussar, emperor, jobfish and trout, just a few to mention. With all the available species there also comes plenty of sharks so take care.

Anchoring in shallow areas around 40m with berley is advisable on the changing of the tide. Deeper areas around 85m can be drifted outside of the big full and new moon tidal changes. Paternosta rigs are successful for catching parrot and other bottom dwellers. Certain areas produce different species so it is a matter of exploring.

Location: S26º17’200” E153º38’015”

Depth: 50-80m

Distance: 62km (50km from Noosa Bar)

The Hards begins at the tip of the Barwon Banks and goes a further 20km north offering changing reef and bottom conditions along the way. This mark is close to the middle of the Hards so you can work around a fair bit. It’s typical rough country with plenty of kingfish, amberjack, tuna varieties, sailfish and wahoo during the warmer months. Top fishing for reef species throughout the winter period but be aware that it is a big trip and you can have days where not much happens. This is a terrific area to get some real quality marks for future fishing trips.

Sunshine Reef

Location: S26º25’100” E153º09’150”

Depth: 20-35m

Distance: 29km (10km from Noosa Bar)

Well known for its pelagic fishing in the summer, in particular kingfish, mackerel and tuna varieties and can serve up some outstanding snapper, pearl perch, parrot, cobia, spangled emperor, grass sweetlip, trout and many other species. Sunshine Reef is a very good system (scattered boulders as per the National Park Hedland) mixed with coral reef and patches of sand. Grassies are very common there, possibly the most common catch on some trips. Maori cod and red emperor are often caught there too, although the vast majority of the reds are under size.

Location: S26º20’250” E153º05’110”

Depth: 15-20m

Distance: 38km (2km from Noosa Bar)

Halls and Little Halls reefs are worthwhile spots to start the adventure on the way to more distant reefs. These areas can fish outstandingly well after prolonged rain as they are the closest structures to the river mouth and a big fresh pushes prawns, herring, mullet and other bait out into Laguna Bay. Halls is also a great place to deploy a bait jig and collect a few livies.

Location: S26º21’640” E153º06’890”

Depth: 10m

Distance: 35km (3.7km from Noosa Bar)

Jew Shoal is a very good area for fat longtails and passing schools of spotted mackerel in summer. Also worth trolling small rigged bonito or hardbodies for Spanish mackerel. Trollers regularly pick up quality snapper over JS in winter. Look for bait around this area and really only target it if you are heading out from Noosa bar. In the winter you can pick up snapper, cod and sweetlip and normally some mackerel hang around when they are on elsewhere.

Chardons Reef

Location: S26º23’920” E153º15’480”

Depth: 30-55m

Distance: 31km (9km from Noosa Bar)

Chardons is a very good option when Sunshine is quiet. Big Spaniards run up and down the coast out at Chardons late in the season and many marlin are hooked there too by trollers chasing the mackerel, and from time to time on floating baits while bottom bashing. (A mate of mine hooked a 2m blue at Chardons last Saturday on a floating squid bait on 6/0 gangs). Not many marlin are landed though.

Location: S26º16’550” E153º11’350”

Depth: 40-55m

Distance: 45km (15km from Noosa Bar)

Top spot to fish for mahi mahi, kingfish, mackerel in particular spotty, and Spanish. Also has a great range of reef species like spangled emperor, snapper and quality pearl perch. Again this is a worthwhile trip when there is a blow on around Mooloolaba and Caloundra areas. There is a fairly protected run up along the coastline.

Sombrero Reef Snorkeling Tours Aboard ‘The Starfish’

  • Sombrero Reef National Marine Sanctuary and Lighthouse is recognized as the best place to snorkel in the entire Florida Keys
  • Enjoy spacious comfort on our Coast Guard Approved custom catamaran
  • Measuring 30 acres, Sombrero Reef boasts large boulder and branch coral formations – home to countless tropical fish
  • Our Sombrero Reef snorkel crew will do whatever they can to make your trip memorable
  • We are a family friendly, locally owned business, so join us when you visit Marathon, FL

The great barrier reefs on our planet are precious. Like underwater rainforests, they teem with wildlife and colorful corals. Sombrero Reef is alive. It is a place where parrotfish feed on the living coral while trumpetfish try to blend in among its branches. The reef is protected, so you can expect to see large schools of grunts and snappers swimming among large grouper hiding in the crags and looking for a meal.

At Starfish Marathon Snorkeling Tours we take you to the heart of the action on board a safe and spacious catamaran that offers comfort and total protection from the sun. We do not allow scuba gear or personal coolers on board our vessel during snorkeling excursions. The reason is because we want all of our guest to have the luxury of moving freely on the deck, without risk of stubbing their toes or taking a spill. Our full-deck covering allows everyone to remain protected from Florida’s unforgiving ultraviolet radiation.

Bring everyone in your family on one of our Sombrero Reef snorkel tours, and experience one of the planet’s most famous barrier reefs for yourself.

Sombrero Reef Snorkeling Tours in Beautiful Marathon Florida

We welcome guest from all over the globe who are vacationing in the Florida Keys and eager to experience the unrivaled beauty of Sombrero Reef. Over 30 acres in size, the reef is alive and thriving, and filled with all sorts of neon-colored tropical fish.

Because Sombrero Reef is only between 2 to 30 feet deep, it attracts snorkeling enthusiasts who appreciate getting up close and personal with their underwater friends. You also don’t need any fancy diving apparatus to enjoy the natural beauty of the reef.

During the seven mile journey in the Atlantic Ocean from Marathon to Sombrero Reef, we commonly spot dolphins cruising to their own secret destinations.

We seek to educate all of our guests about the rules that govern the reef, so that future generations can enjoy it just as much as we do. Coral is a living organism, and the clicking noises you hear while snorkeling is the teeming animals living and feeding around the coral. We want you to enjoy every minute of your snorkeling adventure, but please be mindful of these important rules:

  • DO NOT stand on the coral while snorkeling
  • Always use the buddy system, which means to snorkel with a friend
  • All snorkelers MUST be good swimmers – ride-along passengers are welcome
  • Weight restrictions apply: Maximum 275 pounds per USCG Title-46 Code of Federal Regulations 178.330
  • Other restrictions: No coolers please and no spray sun lotion onboard.
  • There are no age restrictions. Please purchase tickets for all passengers, including riders.
Don’t touch or remove coral from the reef – it is against the law

  • Prescription snorkeling masks for nearsighted guests
  • Wetsuit rentals
  • New mouthpieces
  • Motion sickness tablets
  • Refreshments
We do not allow spray-on sun lotion on board our Sombrero Reef snorkeling tours because the overspray from these products can cause the deck to become slippery and dangerous. We want everyone to have plenty of room to move about the boat freely, so it’s a rule that makes good sense.

A Few Other Thoughts about Our Sombrero Reef Snorkel Tours

Scuba Diving Sunshine Coast Reefs - Double Dive

Scuba Diving Sunshine Coast Reefs - Double Dive

  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location : Mooloolaba, Queensland
  • Product code: ddscr002

Come  and explore the beautiful Sunshine Coast local reefs.  Be guided all the way by a dive professional. We only take small groups so you will be in safe hands.  Here on holidays?  We can make a trip tailored to suit your interests, wether it is Scuba Diving beautiful reefs or exploring ship wrecks, we will make it an experience to remember. Diving on the Sunshine Coast is quite simply too easy. Not only do the coral reefs rival the marine diversity of the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll only need to spend 20 minutes on a boat getting out to the action. This is why the Sunshine Coast attracts local, state, interstate and international divers. Combine the sheer diversity of life, richness of the waters, vivid colours and lack of coral bleaching and the Sunshine Coast becomes a veritable diving haven. Sunshine Coast has beautiful local reefs just off shore ready to be explored.  These include:

Jew Shoal is located in Noosa’s pristine Laguna Bay and is reachable by boat in just 20 minutes. The site itself is a large complex of canyons, ridges and bommies, with two main features. Expect to see reef fish including angelfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish, globefish, rabbitfish, soapfish, morwong, sweetlip and bream – as you meander through the caves. The caves consist of several large swim throughs which are a buzz with marine life. Its gutters are covered in colourful hard and soft corals. And secondly, the pin starts at seven metres depth dropping down to 16m as you descend. There are plenty of ledges, walls, and crevices to explore. Seasonal mantas and grey nurse sharks even turn up from time to time. The coral gardens here are home to an array of marine invertebrates - sea stars, feather stars, hermit crabs, urchins, cowries and over 100 varieties of nudibranchs. Both main sites feature fantastic coral layouts to go and explore for divers of all skill levels.

Old Woman Island

The colourful coral gardens of Mudjimba (Old Woman) Island are reached in less than 20 minutes by boat from Mooloolaba. This popular shallow water dive site has a dazzling array of marine life including lots of soft corals, sea sponges, sea anemones and a variety of tropical fish. It’s a safe, easy dive that is great for beginners in its sheltered shallow waters. This site is also great for snorkelling.

Inner Gneerings

Just offshore from Mooloolaba in the warm coastal waters of the Coral Sea lies the Inner Gneerings reef system. This comprehensive coral network includes numerous diverse and amazing dive spots, including Hanging Rock, the Pinnacles, Wobby Rock, the aptly named Fairyland and many, many more. The reef of the Inner Gneerings is adorned with many beautifully coloured soft corals, black coral trees and white coral whips. The area is a divers dream with a variety of marine life including rays, loggerhead and green turtles, moray eels, wobbegongs and leopard sharks – not to mention dramatic crops and coral shelves. Watch out for the sapphire damsels and fairy basslets darting in and out of cover.  This site is suitable for beginners,  open water and advanced divers.

Outer Gneerings

Sunshine Coast, Queensland is home to the Outer Gneering Shoals diving site.  This site is, on average around 18 metres deep but does drop down to 25 at its maximum.  Visibility is usually a good, clear 15 metres which makes the site feel quite open as you are able to see a lot further than in many other diving areas.  Outer Gneering Shoals is an open water site that takes approximately 30 minutes by boat to get to.

Anyone with an interest or passion for coral should dive at the Outer Gneering Shoals.  Among the rock and boulder formations the coral just spreads out like a vast quilt and amongst it lies the diversity of sea life that coral attracts.  In the winter months around the pinnacle you will find larger pelagic fish moving around, but smaller species such as wobbygongs, leatherjackets, baitfish, angels, wrasse, butterfly and urchins are visible at most times of the year.  This site is not suitable for beginners, open water and advanced divers will appreciate these dive sites

 Magic Mountain

Magic Mountain, a dive site on the Outer Gneerings Reef off Mooloolaba's coast, is a dive for more experienced divers due to its depth and the complex structures formed by rocky outcrops. The large group of outcrops extend from the sandy ocean floor to form numerous gullies, ravines, bommies, swim-throughs and pinnacles, all housing soft and hard coral colonies. Fish calling Magic Mountain home include morwong, wrasse, leatherjackets, batfish, bullseyes, butterfly and angelfish. Numerous urchins, nudibranchs, anemones, feather and brittle stars, crabs, crayfish, wobbegongs and the occasional groper are also found on this rugged structure.

Sunshine Reef

Sunshine Reef is a wonderful dive site off Sunshine Beach, just south of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast. This rocky reef is deeper than other reefs in the Noosa area and is more suited to experienced divers, as depths vary from 25 metres to 33 metres. The rocky terrain at Sunshine Reef is cut with gutters and ledges and covered in soft corals, hard corals, gorgonians and black coral trees. Investigating the reef, divers will find an abundance of pretty nudibranchs, which are a feature of the Sunshine Coast area. Also making a home on this reef are crayfish, moray eels, scorpionfish, lionfish and a wide variety of small reef fish. Larger residents include turtles, batfish, coral trout, gropers, trevally, sweetlips and sometimes schools of barracuda.

This Island Has the Best Beach in the World, According to Travel Experts

Bora Bora takes the No. 1 spot.

The best beach in the world is often selected for its beauty — places where the water is so clear it appears turquoise and the sand is so soft it feels like powdered sugar. But it takes more than physical beauty to make a great beach. A great beach should welcome everyone , regardless of its background, identity, or abilities. A great beach should have an energetic vibe — or at least a luxurious one. And finally, a great beach should have some sort of cultural significance, be it historical or modern-day pop culture.

These factors (and more) were considered by BeachAtlas , a London-based startup that’s known for its beach guides. This year, when selecting the winners of the Golden Beach Award 2024 they took a broader perspective — shining a light on beach gems that offer more than beautiful views and soft sand. Then, they invited travel experts and influencers from around the world to rank the final list.

The result is a list of 100 beaches that have it all: classic beauty, party and lifestyle, inclusivity, community, natural diversity, and cultural significance. Topping the list is Bora Bora , an island group in French Polynesia with the best beach in the world.

As BeachAtlas describes, Bora Bora is “where your wallet whispers ‘help’ but your Instagram screams ‘heaven.’ Dive into crystal-clear waters by day and snap postcard-perfect sunsets by night.”

Bora Bora is a name that’s synonymous with beauty, luxury, and seclusion. Its total land area is just 12 square miles and it’s tucked protectively inside a bright blue lagoon and a barrier reef. The main island is marked by two dormant volcanoes that rise from the center of the island, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, and are surrounded by several motus, or small islands, that are often too small for anything but a handful of beach chairs.

Small stretches of sand circle the main island of Bora Bora, including the main public beach, Matira Beach, which is widely considered to be one of the best on the island. No matter where you decide to post up, you’ll be treated to views over the lagoon’s artificially bright blue waters, waving palms, stilted overwater bungalows , and the towering peaks of Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.

In addition to Bora Bora, BeachAtlas selected 99 beaches that stood out for their role in history, the communities they foster, or the inclusivity they provide. Below are the top 10 pics:

  • Boulders Beach, South Africa
  • Waikiki Beach, U.S.
  • Copacabana, Brazil
  • Maya Bay, Thailand
  • Black Sand Beach, Iceland
  • Glass Beach, U.S.
  • JBR Beach, UAE
  • Skeleton Coast, Namibia
  • Omaha Beach, France
