The two major railroads serving over 1330 route miles in Alabama today are CSX and the Norfolk Southern. Amtrak service includes the daily Cresent , running between New York and New Orleans.

People love a lot of things about Buc-ee's -- the absurdly clean bathrooms, endless rows of gas pumps and that adorable, buck-toothed mascot, for starters. That said, Buc-ee's surplus of unique snacks have built a following all their own, including one Buc-ee's snack that seems to be a favorite among Buc-ee's enthusiasts everywhere, and that's Beaver Nuggets.

Buc-ee's got its start in Texas in 1982, and since then, the popular gas station has expanded with locations popping up all over the South. Known for their massive size -- seriously, Buc-ee's currently holds the world record for largest convenience store thanks to its location in New Braunfels, Texas, which is 66,335 square feet -- Buc-ee's has just about every gas station snack you can imagine, from barbecue to homemade fudge to chips, beef jerky, gummies and more, but it's the (usually) sweet corn puffs known as Beaver Nuggets that have become the standout snack for many.

Beaver Nuggets now come in a variety of flavors, including sea salted caramel, cinnamon sweet, bold n' sorta spicy, white cheddar and white cheddar habanero, these days, it's the original flavor that remains one of Buc-ee's top-selling snacks. So, what are Beaver Nuggets, exactly? While the name might bring on visions of chicken nuggets, the real thing is much closer to Corn Pops.

In the simplest terms, Beaver Nuggets are essentially puffed corn that's covered in a brown sugar coating. They're described as being "crunchy, sweet, and addictive," according to Texas Snax , which goes on to say "each bite delivers a satisfying combination of a caramel-coated exterior and a puffy interior, offering a notable crunch."

We don't know how a snack with such a less-than-appealing name became an icon of such a popular chain, but they did. Buc-ee's has said Beaver Nuggets are their best selling snack, and Food and Wine even named them as Texas's best snack, calling them "deliciously evil".

So by now, you're probably craving a bag of the sweet corn puffs if you've had them before or, if you haven't, you're probably eager to try 'em. The easiest way to get your hands on some Beaver Nuggets is, of course, to head to the nearest Buc-ee's and stock up. However, if you don't live close to one of the mega convenience stores, you can also order them online through reseller site Texas Snax or try your luck on Amazon .

Another option? Try your hand at making them at home as there are plenty of copycat recipes out there to choose from. For instance, Allrecipes offers up a way to make Beaver Nuggets in the comfort of your own kitchen by coating plain store-bought corn puffs with a combination of brown sugar, butter, corn syrup, salt, baking soda and vanilla. Meanwhile, Imperial Sugar has a similar recipe except theirs include maple extract as well. There's also plenty of YouTube tutorials, like this one for "Badger Brittle" by the Pressure Luck Cooking channel , offering up ways to make a snack similar enough to Beaver Nuggets to satisfy any cravings.

Any homemade version might not live up to the crunchy sweetness Beaver Nuggets serves up, but hey, at the very least, it'll make a decent road snack during the drive to Buc-ee's to score the real thing.

Do you have a love of trains from the times when there were more passenger cars than freight cars? Does the lonesome whistle of an old locomotive evoke happy chills and memories?

Whether you’re the train fan in your house or you have children who are, you can visit all sorts of interesting places in Alabama to ride trains or learn about our rail history. Because there are so many, this story does not include a list of all the historic depots/museums in the state.

TRAIN EXCURSIONS

You may enjoy modern train travel, which has its benefits. This list, however, is about riding historic trains, those chugging, smoking behemoths of old. Several places in Alabama have preserved trains so that people can have that experience. Here are a few:

North Alabama Railroad Museum

694 Chase Road NE, Huntsville, Ala.

This facility offers museum tours as well as train rides. The website says the museum reflects “a love of trains and a desire to preserve railroad history.” It is run by volunteers so hours are limited. Check the website before going.

NARM offers train excursions from April through December. Christmas train rides are offered after Thanksgiving.

“Our regular (long) excursion consists of a roundtrip of 10 miles, with some great scenery thrown in. The train travels over a section of the historic Huntsville Branch of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway,” the website says.

Heart of Dixie Museum

1919 Ninth Street, Calera, Ala.

This facility offers the “official railroad museum in the state of Alabama.” Guests can visit inside exhibits, see numerous exhibits in the train yard and also take excursions on the Calera & Shelby Railroad, which runs on a piece of the old L&N Alabama Mineral Railroad track established in 1891.

“Our museum features operating standard gauge and narrow-gauge trains, two restored depots, an indoor collection of railroad artifacts and memorabilia, and an outdoor collection of railroad cars, locomotives, and cabooses,” the website says.

Check schedules for upcoming train rides. You can also charter a train ride or plan field trips.

Wales West Light Railway

Wales West is an RV Park and Light Railway in Silverhill, Ala. The business operates two train rides, one a narrow gauge and one a grand scale.

While these trains are not ones that run on historic railways, they made the list because they are large enough for adults to ride.

“Trains pull out of the station just about every day,” the website says. “And during our seasonal event times, trains depart for places like the North Pole... or the Pumpkin Patch. Along the way, you can see everyone from the Easter Bunny to Halloween monsters.”

After visiting the Foley Railroad Museum, check out the Charles Ebert Express II. The museum offers rides to children from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturdays all year long, and in summer also from 10-2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Tuscumbia Railway at Spring Park

This beloved train makes loops around beautiful Spring Park. It is not always in service so be sure to check the schedule.

The city’s first director of Parks and Recreation, Bill Calhoun, added what would become the star of the park: a realistic, miniature train families could ride through the park. For more than 60 years, the Rocky Brook Rocket has hauled its precious cargo around the park, making it one of the oldest trains of its type – and one of the few still operating in its original location, according to Matthew Battles, the current area supervisor of Opelika Parks and Recreation.

Red Diamond Express

Birmingham Zoo, 2630 Cahaba Road, Birmingham, Ala.

This train is located inside Birmingham Zoo so be sure to check the website for ride schedules . It is sponsored by Red Diamond and the company has recently donated “a state-of-the-art, electric, battery-powered train is American made in Wichita, Kansas by Chance Rides,” the zoo website says.

Noccalula Falls Train

1500 Noccalula Road, Gadsden, Ala.

The kiddie train at Noccalula Falls is temporarily out of commission. The good news? The park is getting a new train that is expected to arrive in September, according to park supervisor Christina Richardson.

ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

Sometimes people who love trains create unusual or one-of-a-kind attractions for other train-lovers to enjoy. Here are a few:

Inside the Foley Railroad Museum, you can visit the Model Train Exhibit, a “delightful O scale model train display that covers 1,200 square feet of tabletop,” the website says. “Multiple freight trains and passenger trains crisscross the layout that includes a very detailed model town, a farming community, a country fair, a potato shed, an outdoor drive-in and tall wooden trestle bridges with tunnels.”

The exhibit is free and open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Three Modes of Naheola Bridge

Alabama Highway 114, Pennington, Ala.

Old Naheola Bridge is an important piece of transportation history and still carries rail traffic. Before its closure to cars in 2001, it was one of the few in the world that could accommodate rail, auto and river traffic, said Billy Milstead of RuralSWAlabama.org . It is still open to rail traffic but a new bridge was built for motorists. The center span of the bridge, which was built for the Meridian & Bigbee Railroad, could be raised vertically to allow barges to pass on the river below.

One-Millionth Pullman Car

Alabama Avenue, Bessemer

A Pullman-Standard train car manufacturing plant operated in the city of Bessemer, Ala., until 1994. Pullman cars, invented by George Pullman in the early days of train travel, were cars made for sleeping.

In 1980, when the one millionth car came off the line, it was dedicated to the city and erected to commemorate the milestone .

Located across from the Bessemer Hall of History Museum, the car contains a working model of a railroad display depicting downtown Bessemer. You have to ask for a key to the car at the museum.

Derailed Diner

This fun transportation-themed eatery is temporarily closed. The owners asked to be listed, however, because it will reopen “later this year.” Just be sure to check the website before going.

The diner is located inside the Oasis Travel Center. An outside entrance lets visitors walk past a “wrecked train” into a “station.” Guests can eat inside a dining room that looks like a train car or sit beside a real indoor school bus. Added bonus: The check-out counter inside Oasis Travel Center looks like a pirate ship!

So you’d like to jump on an old steam train in Alabama, well you’ve got a couple of great options.

Steam engine train rides in Alabama are located at The North Alabama Railroad Museum and Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum. Let’s take a closer look at them.

There’s nothing more enjoyable than a ride on an old steam train. They may not be too popular today.

But, you can relive their history with steam engine train rides in Alabama.

The North Alabama Railroad Museum and Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum offer stunning steam engine train rides in the state.

You can literally get all aboard on the state’s railroad history; it’s like a flashback in time.

There are also other historical sights for railroads. For instance, the Wales West Light Railway is home to a one-of-a-kind two-food gauge railway. Thousands of visitors pay a visit to this area. So, it’s definitely a must-see if you’re a train fan.

And finally, several other museums maintain historical railroad artifacts.

So, where can you find steam engine train rides in Alabama? Let’s take a look.

A Brief View Of Alabama’s Steam Engine Railroad History

Alabama holds a long and varied history that began with steam trains.

The Tuscumbia Railway was the first railroad in the state. It was established in January 1830 and was initially a horse-drawn railroad.

This railroad was also mainly built for easier transport of cotton bales. It facilitated its movement from the city center of Tuscumbia to the Tennessee River’s wharf. All in all, the Tuscumbia Railway ran 2.1 miles of track.

Two years after, the Stourbridge Lion arrived from England. This was the first-ever steam train to be introduced in America. Shortly after its arrival, it replaced the horses on The Tuscumbia Railway.

Around this time, the Tuscumbia, Courtland & Decatur (TC&D) Railroad was also established. This railroad connected the three areas to better service the cotton trade. It began at a junction along the Tuscumbia Railway and traveled southeast.

And in 1850, the Memphis & Charleston Railroad bought the TC&D and merged it with the Tuscumbia Railway. The railroad successfully linked Tennesee to Alabama.

The TC&D and old Tuscomia was indeed a hub for trade. It served as the main route going to Memphis. On top of this, they also interchanged with the following historic railroads:

• Louisville & Nashville
• Gulf, Mobile & Ohio
• Illinois Central
• Missouri Pacific
• Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific
• Cotton Belt

And from there, it was history! Alabama grew into a vital link for railroads. The state also grew to have many more types of resources. This includes coal, iron, and timber. It also had popular regions for commerce such as Montgomery and Birmingham.

And as of today, the state has nearly 4,000 miles of trackage.

2 Steam Engine Train Rides In Alabama – You Must Check Out

Ready to relive some train history? Here are the two museums that offer train rides in Alabama!

1. Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum

Looking to spend a day immersed in incredible train history with actual steam trains? Head on over to the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum.

If you’re a railroad enthusiast like I am, this is the place to visit.

The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum (HDRM) is Alabama ‘s official railroad museum. The museum has been operating since the 1960s. For years, they have been restoring, conserving, and operating valuable railway machinery.

Their collection of rolling stock and machinery spans the years from 1890 to 2005. It will certainly take you on a journey through time.

The museum boasts four steam trains such as:

• Alabama Power Company 40 (0-4-0F)
• Batson & Hatten Lumber Company 2-8-0
• US Army Transportation Corps 0-6-0 “Switcher” Train
• ALCO 0-4-0 No. 3

They also feature nine diesel-electric locomotives. Three of these are used to operate their excursion trains.

On top of this, they have two restored depots on display. One of them is an old Southern structure that was created in the 1890s in Wilton. While the second depot served Birmingham in the 1880s.

Furthermore, they exhibit multiple railroad antiques and artifacts. The museum also has an outdoor display of locomotives, cars, and cabooses.

Finally, the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum offers a picture-perfect train ride over 5.5 miles of track of the old Louisville and Nashville Railroad.

And as mentioned, their train rides are powered by their diesel-electric locomotives!

You can also ride a steam train Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum! They currently run a quarter-mile loop of a 2-foot gauge steam excursion.

However, these train rides are only operational from March-December. So, if you want to maximize your experience, visit during these dates.

2.North Alabama Railroad Museum

The North Alabama Railroad Museum (NARM) is located inside Chase. Since its establishment in 1966, they have built up a large collection of rolling stock and several diesel trains.

And almost all of these are American locomotives.

The highlight of the museum is the beautifully refurbished Chase Depot. This train stop was originally situated at the intersection of two significant lines.

One of which was the Norfolk Southern . This line traveled across Chattanooga and Nashville. The other line was Louisville and Nashville, which traveled between Tennessee, Dechard, and Gadsden.

NARM offers train rides on their 10-mile track from March to December. There are plenty of beautiful landscapes to enjoy along the route. Their train ride themes are varied, too!

They alsovhold train rides for events like Father’s day and Mother’s Day too. Furthermore, they run a Santa train during the holiday season.

Welcome to the North Alabama Railroad Museum

At the North Alabama Railroad Museum, located in Chase, Alabama, just east of Huntsville , you will find a facility reflecting a love of trains and a desire to preserve railroad history. If you are interested in taking our self-guided walking tour while you are at the museum, please follow this link .

The museum’s volunteer staff is present each Wednesday and Saturday morning for member work sessions and to assist visitors.  Visitors may take a free self-guided tour and there are tour sheets and museum brochures in the waybill box located on the north side of the Chase Depot. Please note, the museum will occasionally be closed to the general public for private events, we apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. We request visitors to stay off the track do not climb on equipment and to obey all signs (security cameras are on premises).  The museum depends on its income from train rides and donations from visitors who are interested in seeing a bit of our rail history preserved. Donations are welcomed!

The centerpiece of the museum features the Chase Depot , the smallest union depot in the country since it served more than one railroad when in service. Autumn Splendor By Rail, Alabama's Fall Foliage Train Rides (2024)

Alabama may be located in the Deep South but the state is home to some of the best fall foliage throughout this part of the country.  This is especially true in the central and northern regions where the Appalachian Mountains begin and the rolling hills, rural farms, and penetrating forests offer spectacular views in October and November.

There are currently two heritage railroads in Alabama that continue to host trips during this time of year, the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera and the North Alabama Railroad Museum in Huntsville.

Because of its southerly location bear in mind that the colors here generally do not peak until late October and continue through mid-November.  Other locations in the state you may be interested in visiting simply to see the colors include:

• Cheaha State Park :  This state park is located in the heart of the Talladega National Forest with the Appalachian Mountains.  The park is also the highest point in Alabama at 2,413 feet above see level.  As you hike through the park's trails, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding forests, valleys, and mountains. During the fall season, the trees in the park turn into a kaleidoscope of colors, making it a prime location for leaf peeping.
• Little River Canyon National Preserve : This preserve is located in northeast Alabama, a 14-mile-long canyon that offers stunning views of the fall foliage. The preserve has several hiking trails that lead to various lookout points, including the Little River Falls and the Martha's Falls. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking, birdwatching, and camping in the preserve.
• Noccalula Falls Park : The Noccalula Falls Park is located in Gadsden, Alabama, is home to a 90-foot waterfall and a 250-acre park. During the fall season, the park's trees turn into a brilliant display of colors, making it an ideal location to view the fall foliage. Visitors can hike the park's trails, have a picnic, or explore the various attractions, including a pioneer village and a petting zoo.
• Oak Mountain State Park : Another popular recreational area, Oak Mountain is located in Pelham and is the largest state park in Alabama. It has over 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, a fishing lake, and a beach. During the fall season, the park's hardwood trees turn into a spectacular show of colors.
• Bankhead National Forest : Bankhead National Forest, located in northwestern Alabama, is a 180,000-acre preserve that offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, and camping. During the fall season, the forest's trees turn into a colorful display of reds, oranges, vermilions, and yellows. Visitors can explore the forest's trails, picnic areas, and waterfalls.

Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum

(Calera) :   Located in Calera, this museum not only provides static displays showcasing the state's rail history but also offers many excursions throughout the year.  One such event is the Pumpkin Patch Express hosted during October. 

Geared, of course, for the kids the ride (which departs from the restored Southern Railway depot originally located in Wilton) lasts about 1 1 / 2 hours where the train departs east from Calera along a former Louisville & Nashville line which once linked the town with Wellington, Alabama and Birmingham in a roundabout fashion. 

The railroad referred to it as the "Alabama Mineral Division" that ran 183 miles.  Today, the museum maintains just over 5 miles of the southern leg that once reached Wellington (98 miles) where interchange was established with the Seaboard Air Line. 

During your trip you will pass through the beautiful Shelby County countryside; the right-of-way passes through a mixture of forest canopy and open farmland.  Along the way you can also see the Timberline Golf Club and Ozan Winery & Distillery's vineyard.

North Alabama Railroad Museum

(Huntsville) :   Like the Heart Of Dixie Museum this organization offers excursions alongside static displays.  It has two different fall train rides, the Punkin' Pickin' Extravaganza and the Fall Color Special (which normally runs during two different weekends). 

The former trip, as the name suggests, allows kids to ride out and pick out their own pumpkin.  The event is held during one Saturday each October. 

The latter is, of course, geared towards the autumn colors running over a former section of the historic Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis running to the east and west of Huntsville (5 miles).  This is operated as the "Mercury & Chase Railroad." 

During the trip you will see lots of beautiful farmland and view the southern periphery of the breathtaking Appalachian Mountains.  It is a lovely little train ride tucked away in the "Heart of Dixie."

Frequently Asked Questions About North Alabama Railroad Museum

– Passengers should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure times.

– To order tickets by phone, please call the Chase depot 256-851-6276 Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 8PM, Saturday 9AM to 5PM, and Sunday 1PM to 6 PM to speak to an operator.

– Any seats remaining or any unclaimed seats will be sold at 5 minutes before scheduled departure on a first come / first served basis at the ticket counter.

– For all regular train rides, babes in arms (not requiring a seat) ride for free. For special train rides (Peter Cottontail, Punkin’ Pickin’ Extravaganza, North Star Limited and the Santa Train), every rider, regardless of age, must have a ticket. These special train rides are specifically intended for families with children. All children must be accompanied by an adult on all train rides.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) in Huntsville & North Alabama 2024

– No food or drink is permitted on the train. Remember, you’re riding in classic antiques.

– If you bring a baby stroller you will be asked to store it nearby before boarding the train for the ride.

– Wheelchair spaces are available in car 1000, so please be aware of this when you purchase your tickets as this car is not always on the train (for example the Santa Train rides). When you buy your tickets you will be asked to specify if it is for a wheelchair space (only 2 wheelchair spaces are available per train ride).

– Train operations require the use of loud whistles that may startle very young children and there are safety considerations around trains and heavy equipment, therefore we ask that you keep young children close by your side and under supervision.

– The museum’s volunteer staff is present each Wednesday and Saturday until 1:30 or 2:00 p.m. to assist visitors. The museum is also open by special appointment. Visitors may take a free self-guided tour and there are tour sheets and museum brochures in the waybill box located on the north side of the depot.

Are there any train museums I can visit in Alabama?

The allure of trains and rail travel has appealed to many since the 19th century and to visit a train museum can allow us to step back in time. Our Historic Train Depot Trail in Alabama features several older depots, many of which have been turned into museums. In downtown Hunstville, you’ll find the Historic Hunstville Depot, the state’s oldest surviving depot, built in 1860. The Old Decatur Depot, built in 1905, was in operation until 1979. Now it serves as a museum and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Are there any other train rides in Alabama I can take?

Aside from the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum, there are several other train rides available around the state. At the Foley Railroad Museum & Model Train Exhibit, you can board a free train ride around Heritage Park where the museum is located. The North Alabama Railroad Museum offers special themed train rides throughout the year. There are also several Amtrak stations throughout the state where you can ride a train to different parts of Alabama. 

Are there any train-themed restaurants in Alabama?

Sometimes there’s no other place to make you feel like a kid again than a themed restaurant, especially if it’s train-themed! Stop by the Derailed Diner in Robertsdale, where you can eat inside a train car located on the grounds of a truck stop. Order some incredible southern comfort food at The Red Caboose Cafe in Elkmont and get an up-close look at the red caboose on the property. Head to Helena Deli and Grill which is located inside the town’s historic depot and order a Philly cheesesteak!
