With our full work and family schedule, planning our much-desired trip to Greece was not going to fit into our timeframe. Zicasso and the team at the travel company were the best! Our agent listened to our needs and desires for the trip – experience and adventure throughout Greece. He updated and made the changes we suggested. We ended up with a wonderful 10-day trip from Athens to Nafplio and Paros. We hiked, experienced history, enjoyed wonderful local foods and shops, kayaked, snorkeled, froze under a mountain waterfall, and saw the clearest, bluest lakes ever. One of the highlights was during a hiking/water day when we had an incredible lunch at a local woman's home in the mountain area. The food was beautifully prepared, the conversation enjoyable, and the property idyllic. Once we headed to the island of Paros, which we highly recommend due to fewer crowds and wonderful restaurants and shopping, we topped off one evening with a 6.5km cultural hike along the Byzantine highway, learning why the homes are abandoned and whitewashed, and there are more than 20 varieties of wild, medicinal herbs, as well as learning the history of battles throughout the regions. If you haven't visited Greece, this travel company will create the ideal itinerary for your time there. I recommend visits to Athens, Nafplio, and Paros. Bring your walking and water shoes, and let them take care of everything else.

The trip was thoughtfully planned by Zicasso's travel team to meet our needs and expectations. The main problem I had was luggage handling: into and out of hotels, on and off trains, into airports. The drivers could not always bring the luggage to these places for us. I am getting too old and am not strong enough to handle the luggage myself. That needs to be worked out in planning a trip. We had excellent guides, for the most part. They were very knowledgeable about the areas in which they guided us. Several joined us for a meal after we toured a site and we found them to be good company. Our guide for the Alhambra seemed to be having an allergic reaction the day of our visit and kept sneezing, to the point that she did not seem to feel well. She really rushed us through the palace, which was very crowded. I tried to slow her down, especially when I found my balance being threatened by the crowded conditions. She seemed impatient with my problem. I also found her English more difficult to understand than that of other guides. She declined to join us for lunch and got the heck out of there as fast as she could. The drivers were almost always easy to locate and good-natured. Mostly, we were just with them to get from point A (our hotel, a train station) to B. Occasionally, the driver spent the day with us and those who did were delightful.

Zicasso’s travel company was outstanding. I highly recommend our travel agent. She listened to our ideas and provided good ones of her own based on her wealth of experience living and traveling in Italy. Every tour she planned was educational and enjoyable. The drivers she reserved for us were safe and drove comfortable cars. We especially appreciated having the train and tour tickets all purchased ahead of time and the car rental and hotels prepaid. Our agent even checked us in ahead of time for the one train that required check-in. She also found perfect, well-run hotels and inns for us, located within five to 10 minutes of restaurants. We would use our agent again in a heartbeat.

Everything about our trip was close to perfect in regard to the planning and execution of our travel plan. We took a leap of faith in using Zicasso after reading other positive reviews and are happy we made that decision. Our planner did an exceptional job of listening to our interests, age, and lifestyle, then planning our trip. After the initial plan was proposed, we tweaked a few things and it worked out perfectly. During the trip, he promptly answered a few of my questions about tipping and changes to times of one or two tours. I offered feedback on a few of our experiences and he was genuinely interested. He was exceptional! The two hotels were five-star and in great areas. Every driver and tour was prompt and the drivers and guides courteous. And the price was more reasonable when compared to comparable tours offered by "traditional" travel companies.

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're traveling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. 

To determine whether the country you're traveling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.  

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries. 

Can I use my cell phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your cell phone while traveling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi). 

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries. 

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked. 

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500. 

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated. 

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses. 

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities. 

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden. 

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travelers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on traveling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognize this. 

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

DMW shuts down Misamis Oriental-based travel agency for alleged illegal recruitment activities

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has ordered the closure of a Misamis Oriental-based travel agency, which it said, is involved in illegal recruitment of Filipinos who want to work in Europe and Middle East.

DMW Assistant Secretary Francis Ron C. De Guzman implemented the order on Tuesday, June 25, by shutting down the operation of Jonieza Joy Travel and Tours  Jonieza Joy Travel & Tours Agency & Consultancy located in Initao town.

“It was found  illegally recruiting workers for deployment in Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Romania, Croatia, Malta, Greece, Canada, UK, Dubai and Saudi Arabia,” said de Guzman. 

He said the operation stemmed from confirmed intelligence reports that the travel agency is illegally offering overseas jobs including welders, greenhouse workers, warehouse workers, drivers, factory workers, construction workers, service crew, cook, restaurant manager, and nurses.

Based on the report from a Filipino community, the agency offers a monthly salary of P35,000 to P40,000 with bonuses, night shift differential, free medical exam and food allocations. 

It further promised to send their recruits to the destination country in five to eight months, in exchange for P190,000 up to P230,000 in processing and placement fees. 

De Guzman said the DMW recommended the cancellation of the travel agency's business permit and the revocation of its registration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in order to put a stop on the prohibited activity and save future victims.

The owners and staff of the travel agency, according to De Guzman, will face charges of illegal recruitment committed by a syndicate with penalties of P2 million to P5 million and life imprisonment.  

It will also be included in the DMW List of Persons with Derogatory Record which will effectively ban them from recruitment activities.

I f you're tired of wandering through towns consisting mainly of souvenir shops, or mad dashes past famous landmarks in a tour bus, consider a cruise that's mainly about cruising. As you might figure, the mass cruise market is seasonal: summer peaks in Europe, the Mediterranean, and Alaska, and winter peaks in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and warm-water coastal resorts. The big cruise lines "reposition" their ships accordingly, which means one-way transatlantic trips eastbound in spring and westbound in fall.

Typical repositioning cruises last two to 10 weeks. Departure and arrival ports vary depending on planned future itineraries, but they include the most popular ship base ports on both sides of the ocean – Barcelona, Southampton, and Civitavecchia in Europe, South Florida, Galveston, and New York in the United States. For the most part, they're designed to get a ship from where it ends one season to where it starts its next season. The focus is being at sea, but some trips make one or two port calls at the Azores, Madeira, The Canaries, Bermuda, or the Bahamas.

As noted, the focus is being at sea. The cruise ship's amusements and entertainments remain fully active, so you won't just have the ocean to look at.

Prices for repositioning trips can start as less than $200 per couple per night – a bargain considering it includes transport, room, meals, and entertainment. Last-minute inside cabins can sometimes be available or close to the magic figure of $100 per couple.

My directional preference is eastbound. Losing one hour every other day is a lot easier on the jet lag than losing five or more hours over a single night on a plane. You should be ready to go when you arrive.

Passenger-carrying fright trips operate around the world – in fact, some literally operate a round-the-world itinerary. Routes to/from the U.S. to Europe and the Far East are popular.

Unfortunately, Covid pretty much shut down the freighter cruise marketplace – shipping companies didn't want to have to cope with any more medical problems than necessary. Currently, as far as I can tell, the only freighter cruises currently operating are in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and South Pacific.

Pre-Covid prices were generally estimated at around $100 per person per day. Total costs were high because so many voyages last three or more weeks.

The freighter situation should improve for 2025; if you're interested, you can keep tabs on what's going on. Among the main freighter cruise agencies are Maris ( https://www.freightercruises.com/ ) and Freighter Trips.com ( https://www.freightertrips.com/ ).

A final cruising note. If you're anything like I am, one reason you haven't taken a cruise recently is the problem of internet access. I know my withdrawal symptoms are awful. Well, fear not – most cruise lines now offer internet through a shipboard Wi-Fi network at reasonable prices. Typical costs now run around $20 a day for service that's usually fast enough to stream a movie and more than enough to keep you up with your email and other messages. It's satellite-based, and although not as fast or reliable as a good cable connection, it's good enough to keep you as online as you're likely to want.

First Look: HBX Group's MarketHub Europe 2024

From Gen Z, to full recovery, and top destinations in Europe and Middle East

MarketHub Europe, the industry delivered by HBX Group, shared key insights into current travel trends and market growth on the first day in Istanbul, Turkey.

The group's senior leaders took to the stage to deliver keynotes and panels on challenges faced by the sector, the need to balance technological advances with sustainability and ethical considerations.

Content also explored the potential impact of technology on travel experiences, alongside new business opportunities.

Its executive team were joined by representatives from tourism and technology companies, some of which are its partners.

Key highlights included insight into the constant evolution of travellers' habits, with a special focus on European and Middle Eastern destinations. Carlos Muñoz, chief commercial officer of HBX Group , highlighted the increasingly important role of Gen Z and their consumer habits in defining travel trends.

He said: "With a clear focus on last-minute bookings and a preference for package tours, Generation Z is already reshaping the way the industry operates. 

"In addition, their high awareness of sustainability clearly shapes their travel choices."

HBX Group  has registered a 25% increase in searches on its platforms, now totalling 5.6 billion per day. 

Globally, Europe remains one of the leading inbound and outbound markets, while the Middle East continues to grow.

Elsewhere, trends found that globally, the United States and Spain stood out as two of the main traveller receptors, with London, Paris, New York, Dubai and Barcelona as the cities experiencing the highest demand. 

Although all regions have experienced growth in bookings compared to 2023, China and Japan stand out notably.

Europe consolidated its position as a destination after the pandemic.  The continent achieved an increase of more than 60% in bookings as a destination compared to 2019. 

Spain and Italy are two of the most popular countries, with most travellers choosing Europe arriving from United Kingdom, United States, Germany, and Spain.

London, Paris, and Rome continue to be the favourite cities and the average stay is 3 nights, with a growing trend of 1-to-3-day bookings. 

Among the fastest growing destinations are the Balearic and Canary Islands.  

Middle East: the relevance of last-minute bookings . 

Markets such as the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and France continue to be key outbound markets for tourism to the region. Its data revealed that last-minute bookings are crucial in this market, where they account for more than 40% of the total.

The average stay is around 3 nights, and Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Mecca are among the most popular destinations. 

Among the top ten favourites, Doha shows up as one of the fastest growing options.

Turkey, the host nation for the conference, saw Antalya and  Istanbul as the most popular destinations.

According to the data from HBX Group, the main source market for Turkey - aside from  domestic tourism -  is the Middle East and, from Europe, Germany is particularly strong.

Bookings made by travellers from Turkey have grown by more than 50% compared to 2019 and already exceed the bookings recorded last year. 

Among the most popular choices are domestic destinations, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and France in Europe, as well as the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East.
