Our Review Of Tree Top Trek Manchester

tree top trek manchester

What is Tree Top Trek?

Tree Top Trek Manchester is a high rope course based in Heaton Park, similar to Go Ape.

There is a junior course which is available for children from the age of 5 and costs £18 per person and an older one for those that are a bit taller and more confident with heights.

The junior course starts at 5 meters high and features 16 fun challenges, including 3 zip lines.

Our Tree Top Trek Review

We arrived at Heaton Park and headed over to the Tree Top Trek before even telling the children what we going to be doing. As soon as the boys  found out they would be doing the tree top course they were ridiculously excited and so very thankful.  I have spoken many a time about their love for adventure and their ability to climb and how they spend more time up trees than on the floor, so this is the perfect activity and challenge for them.

We found the Tree Top Trek Manchester course to be relatively straight forward and as the harnesses can be lengthened and shortened at any point on the course it really is adaptable for the little ones, making this the perfect beginners tree top course for every child (and adult). In this way it is actually better than Go Ape for the younger/shorter ones.

One of the things that I wasn’t expecting was to be joined on the course with an instructor. They lead the way and help you whenever you may need it, which is different to Go Ape where you are left to go on your own after your safety briefing. At first this made me feel nervous, like I was being watched and judged but actually all the instructors that we met on the day were all so happy and friendly, especially the lady who took us round. She had so much patience with us, especially when my nerves were getting the better of me and chatted the boys at every opportunity.

Clearly our recent visit to Go Ape gave the boys a confidence boost as they took to Tree Top Trek Manchester with such ease and speed that even the instructor was impressed. And as they finished well within the hour, we were given the chance to go round again…..only this time wearing blindfolds.

tree top trek

Obviously I thought she was joking but nope she really did want two of us to wear blind folds whilst the other two lead them round the course.  We decided that the tiddler could lead daddy round and I would lead the big’un round. It was very nerve wracking but also hilarious. If you are given this option when you visit I highly recommend you try it.

At first everyone was being so serious and careful and then all of a sudden the tiddler told daddy to take a big step off the platform and onto a beam, only for there to be no beam as it was in fact the zip wire. He was so pleased with himself that I thought we would all fall out of the trees with laughter and poor daddy was just whizzing through the trees half laughing half screaming from shock. I’m not sure he really trusted him again after that.

Overall view of Tree Top Trek

I would highly recommend you visit Tree Top Trek Manchester and enjoy the junior course as a family, followed by a picnic in Heaton Park itself and a walk round the grounds as they are beautiful, you can really make a day of it. If you have more time to spare then check out our other suggestions for things to do in Manchester .

(We were gifted the tickets in exchange for a review, all opinions are my own).

Treetop Trek Heaton Park

Treetop Adventure Manchester

An aerial adventure in the canopy of Heaton Park ‘s majestic trees, Treetop Trek lifts you high above ground on an obstacle filled high ropes trail through the park’s stunning woodland. Adults and juniors over seven years old can attempt the Full Trek, which takes around two hours and reaches a maximum elevation of 18 metres. This incredible high ropes adventure features 20 aerial challenges to navigate, including balance bars, swinging logs and Indiana bridges, interspersed with 14 separate zip lines to fly you through the leaves. The adventure combines a physical challenge with a unique view of Manchester’s Heaton Park , the beautiful woodland, and the people down below.

Alternatively, the Mini Trek is a good way to try your hand at an aerial adventure without committing to the length and height of the Full Trek. Spanning a lower level at a maximum elevation of eight metres, the Mini Trek takes around an hour to complete, with eight aerial challenges and five zip lines to fly down along the way. It’s also suitable for juniors over the age of five. The Treetop Nets, meanwhile, welcomes children over three and is the perfect area for free play: giant bouncy nets, five slides, two tree houses and two ball parks span 2,000 square metres amongst the trees, linked by a network of open air tunnels.

Treetop Trek was a Day Out With The Kids Family Favourites Award winner for Best Active Day Out in 2018, with a combination of 20,000 public votes and industry experts helping to crown that year’s winners. Bookable for parties and school trips as well as being host to special, seasonal events, this adventure activity in the beautiful setting of Heaton Park is a fantastic challenge for ages three and above.

Review Treetop Trek Manchester

a child on a high rope bridge at Treetop Trek Manchester

Treetop Trek offers a fun woodland adventure in Manchester. We recently checked it out and you can discover our review of Treetop Trek Manchester here.

Treetop Trek Manchester , located in Heaton Park offers the chance to trek through the trees with three experiences, the Full Trek, the Mini Trek and Treetop Nets. We were invited along to check out the Full Trek for the purpose of an honest review. Here is what we thought.

Table of Contents

The Full Trek at   Treetop Trek Manchester is a high ropes adventure with 20 aerial challenges and 14 thrilling zip lines and takes around 2 hours to complete. The course is designed for adults and children aged over 7 years and over with children age 7 to 11 years requiring one participating adult for every three children on the trek. We, therefore, decided to explore Treetop Manchester as a family with my husband and eight and eleven-year-old children in tow.

Treetop Trek  is located in Heaton Park, St Margaret’s Road, Manchester, M25 2GT (gate 15) near to the Heaton Park Northern Play Area where you will find a large pay and display car park which costs £2 for three hours.

It is recommended that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your time slot and as you are on the trek for around two hours a visit to the toilet is wise. There are no toilets at Treetop Trek itself however there are some in Heaton Park which around five minutes away.

Once we were ready to check-in we headed to the reception desk. After they had ensured we had removed all jewellery and watches and long hair was tied up we were shown where we could get our harnesses on.

Review Treetop Treks Manchester Harness

With the social distancing restrictions, you are required to fit your own harness with the help of a partner from your group with the instructor providing a detailed demonstration and checking them carefully afterwards. The instructor then went through the course safety rules, showed us how to move the harness along the wire and how to get ourselves back upright if we slipped.

It was then time to start the   Treetop Trek  and once the instructor had attached us to the course we were away.

I have to admit that I am not great with heights and was very nervous on starting, I was therefore very grateful that the course eased us with a nice high sided netted bridge to start. The next obstacle, however, a horizontal log bridge, was a little more daunting as there was nothing to hold on to. The kids of course were over it in no time whilst I put the harness to good use holding onto it tightly to ensure I didn’t fall the mere four foot to the floor.

Review Treetop Trek Manchester net bridge

As we progressed around the course the obstacles got progressively higher and in some cases harder. We navigated a bridge made of seesaws which tilted downwards are we walked across and resulted in a few squeals; made our way across swinging logs, rode a skateboard along a wire and zig-zagged across wooden planks.

Review Treetop treks Manchester obstacles

The course also features zip wires. Here you need to put your trust in the harness as you hang over the edge of the platform, sit back into it and hold on tight as you zoom towards the next platform. The last zip wire takes you back to the ground. Here you are told to run as you approach the ground to keep you on your feet. Unfortunately, I started running too early, started to spin and hit the safety pile of dirt backwards. This highly amused the kids and my husband who all landed nicely on their feet.

Review Treetop Trek Manchester zip lines

We presumed that was the end of the adventure, however, once we were back on the ground we were told that it was time for the ‘big trek’. The kids were over the moon.

This second part of the trek features lots of zip wires which were not just higher up but also much faster. The course has lots more obstacles including thin rope bridges which moved when you grab the sides, hanging logs, wobble bridges with no sides and broken slats and beams that you have to climb around.

Review Treetop Trek Manchester Bridges

The trek ends with another huge zip wire to the ground and where this time I managed to land on my feet.

What We Thought about the Full Trek at Treetop Trek Manchester.

We all really enjoyed our family day out at  Treetop Trek Manchester . Both I and my husband had a great time and although I have a genuine fear of heights and my heart was pounding throughout I felt completely safe and surprised myself by completing the course.

More importantly, the kids adored being able to try out all the different obstacles and it was great to see their confidence grow on each obstacle. In fact my eight-year-old daughter who was nervous to start managed to do the highest and hardest obstacle in just 30 seconds, which much quicker than the rest of us and wowed the instructor.

We highly recommend the Treetop Trek and will definitely be booking on as a family again.

Treetop Trek Manchester

If you’re looking for a fun way to get outside and get active, try Treetop Trek Manchester at Heaton Park. It’s a chance to feel the breeze on your face and face your fears on a high-rope aerial adventure in the woods.

The Treetop Trek is an exhilarating, obstacle-filled trail with zip wires criss-crossing through the woodland canopy, reaching heights of 15m from the ground. It takes around two hours and is suitable for ages seven and up.

There’s also a Mini Trek which is a little closer to the ground. It’s suitable for ages five and up but still includes plenty of zip-wire excitement and aerial challenges.

If you’re not much of an adrenaline junkie, book the Treetop Nets instead where you can bounce and play on nets, slides, tunnels and treehouses or cause havoc with giant balls. The Treetop Nets sessions last two hours and are suitable for ages three and up.

Check supervision ratios for the different activities before you book.

It’s a popular place for kids parties. Various birthday packages are available for different age groups, from three upwards.

There is no café at Treetop Trek but there’s one in Heaton Park about a five minute walk away. There are also plenty of places to eat in Prestwich itself.

Take a look around Heaton Park's new treetop adventure

170526 Treetop Nets 1

Manchester's new aerial attraction is now open, featuring a super bouncy causeway of trampolines, slides and tunnels

Fourteen kilometres off the coast of Lorient, Brittany, lays an island called Ile de Groix. During summer, ferries do a brisk trade in carting tourists to this little archipelago, just seven by three kilometres in size. But beyond the idyllic beaches and brightly-painted hamlets most come to see, there’s another less likely attraction - a treetop adventure park made by tree pirates.

Yes, Parcabout is a canopy attraction founded by sailor Cédric Chauvaud (otherwise known as ‘black dog’) who has worked on some of the world’s most famous skippers. Something of a legend in the rope-making trade, he was enlisted by scientists to weave aerial pathways - thus helping them to explore the Amazon rainforest sans environmental damage - and decided to create the same back home in Groix.

Needless to say, ‘Parcabout’ was quickly overwhelmed with excitable visitors and became a certified tourist attraction.

170526 Treetop Nets 7

Back in Blighty, Mike Turner came across this net newcomer and decided he wanted in. Already owner of Windermere’s award-winning Treetop Trek, the Wigan-born entrepreneur saw an opportunity to bring the two together and talked Cedric and his cohorts into a partnership.

Turner’s two companies - Treetop Trek and Treetop Nets - now go hand in hand, with Windermere boasting both elements and Manchester soon to do the same.

The new attraction, based in Heaton Park, opened last weekend: offering 175m of giant trampolines, walkways, slides and tunnels - all made from super bouncy netting, suspended up to 40ft off the ground. Safety nets up to three metres high mean families can navigate the site without a harness, making it suitable for everyone from three to 103.

We took a look round Heaton Park's new aerial adventure: 175m of giant trampolines, walkways, slides & tunnels in the trees @TreetopTrekUK pic.twitter.com/OLM4YvowBz — Mcr Confidential (@mcrconfidential) May 30, 2017

Areas include a ‘crow’s nest,’ ball pool and chill-out zone; with the occasional tree house for good measure. More than 120km of ropes were used for the lofty venture, enough to wrap around the M60 twice over.

Construction is now underway for the second stage, Treetop Trek. Due to open 1 July, this will be the largest continuous belay ropes course in Europe: participants will be attached to a harness throughout the aerial course, featuring 35 treetop challenges including twenty zip wires. There will also be a mini version for youngsters and those wanting to test their mettle before having a go.

Turner - who now hopes to attract a street food operator to the attraction - called it ‘the transition from playground to adventure.’ As for the demographic? “As we always say, it’s for everyone," says Turner. "Adults invariably revert back to six-year-old children anyway, and there’s nothing wrong with that!”

After our visit, we’d be inclined to agree.

Treetop Nets is open now - tickets from £12.50 for two hours at treetopnets.co.uk

Treetop Nets, Heaton Park – Review

TreeTop Nets, Heaton Park has been on my children’s wish list for a while now (and even features on our list of things to do in Manchester with the kids this summer ) but for one reason or another we hadn’t got round to visiting until this week!

We booked our TreeTop Nets tickets at the start of July so just had to cross our fingers that the weather would be kind on the day! We had planned a picnic and to explore Heaton Park with friends after we’d finished our allotted time on the nets but the weather wasn’t on our side – however, with having booked our Treetop Nets slot for the middle of the day, we actually felt like we’d had a really good day out anyway and didn’t mind going straight home afterwards!

Let’s get started with the answers to some frequently asked questions about Treetop Nets, Heaton Park and then I’ll let you know what we thought of it!

Contents - Click here to jump to the section you need

What is TreeTop Nets?

Treetop Nets in Heaton Park is part of Treetop Manchester which opened back in May 2016. There is also a Treetop in Windermere . Treetop Manchester offers both Treetop Nets and Treetop Trek (which is in similar vein to Go Ape – we have yet to try but from what we saw of it this week looks like a lot of fun and the kids are already nagging me to book it!)

Treetop Nets is 2000m2 of super bouncy, giant net trampolines high in the tree canopy and linked by walkways, slides and tunnels all made of netting. Because of the 4m high walls, there is no need for a harness as you bounce and explore the nets.

Where is Treetop Nets Heaton Park?

Treetop Nets is situated in Heaton Park near the Northern Play Area – use postcode M25 2GT for your satnav or just search “Treetop Manchester” on Google Maps which will get you to the right bit of Heaton Park. (Heaton Park is vast and there’s a number of car parks so if you end up in the wrong one you could be faced with a bit of a walk!)

Parking for Treetop Trek in Heaton Park

The St Margaret’s Road car park is right next to the entrance for Treetop and perfectly placed for exploring Heaton Park too. Parking is £2 for 1-3 hours / £3 for 3 or more hours and you can pay for this by cash or card. The car park can be busy on a nice day so do make sure you give yourself extra time to find a spot (or just book a nice early Treetop session!)

How much does Treetop Nets cost?

Tickets for Treetop Nets are priced at £20 per person (or £13 for under 5s and supervisors) for a two hour session and this can be pre-booked online.

What do you wear to Treetop Nets?

When it comes to deciding what to wear for your Treetop Nets adventure, think “outdoors” – be prepared to get dirty and dress for the weather. Chloe wore leggings, whilst Ben wore old jeans – trackie bottoms would also be a good option. You don’t want to feel restricted by your clothes when you’re jumping and exploring! (I would also suggest if you’re getting on the nets with the kids, then it would be worth sticking on your most supportive bra!).

What should you wear for treetop nets? Comfy outdoor clothing that you don't mind getting a bit dirty!

You also need to remove all jewellery before you get on the nets – best to do this at home so you haven’t got valuables lying around but the team at Treetop Nets will provide you with tape for newly pierced ears etc.

For safety - remove all jewellery for treetop nets (or cover it with tape)

What age is Treetop Nets suitable for?

Treetop Nets is for children aged 3 and up. There is a minimum ratio of one adult per three children aged 3 or 4 on the nets. For children aged 5-15 years they can access the nets unsupervised but an adult must remain on site.

40 something mums questioning their life choices at tree top nets!

When is Treetop Manchester open?

Treetop Nets is open daily from 9am to 5pm all year round.

How accessible is Treetop Nets?

The pathways through Treetop Nets are made from bouncy nets themselves so are wobbly and unstable. This is a very physical adventure with lots of clambering, bouncing and crawling through tunnels and narrow net corridors which may mean it is unsuitable for visitors with mobility difficulties. The ground in and around Treetop Nets is uneven woodland.

It can get busy with lots of excited people but there’s no additional music or flashing lights. There are no staff in costumes.

The nearest accessible toilet is near the farm and The Stables Cafe.

If you have more information to add to this based on your own experience of attending – let me know and I’ll add it in!

You can read more about accessibility at Treetop Trek here – from what I have read and experienced, I think the Trek is more adaptable for disabled visitors than the nets.

What we thought about our day out at Treetop Nets Heaton Park:

As I mentioned earlier in the post, we booked our Treetop Nets tickets about six weeks ago so had to cross our fingers that the weather would be on our side – and it wasn’t! We were treated to a grey miserable Manchester day with regular rain showers. Thankfully, with waterproof coats and the shelter provided by the trees we didn’t suffer too much and it certainly didn’t spoil our day – we even managed to find a break in the rain to squeeze in a picnic (though we were glad of our sit mats to cover wet picnic benches!)

We arrived a good 20 minutes before our session and checked in but then, because we were early, we popped down to the toilets ahead of getting on the nets. (This is advisable as the nearest toilets are a five minute walk away).

Before you are allowed to get on the nets there is a safety briefing – mostly focusing on following the one way system through the net corridors (which most children seemed to ignore in their excitement), making sure to use a sack on the slides (and to keep that sack with you to avoid too much germ sharing) and to be sensible on the nets – no forward rolls or acrobatics!

Safety briefing done and you’re free to explore the nets for the next two hours!

From the moment I stepped onto the nets I thought 1. This is going to be hard work and 2. I feel sick! But actually, once you got used to the bouncing along the corridors, it wasn’t as physically hard work as I thought it would be and I manged to pretty much keep my motion sickness in check (probably because I didn’t spend all that much time on the nets in the end!) The kids were momentarily nervous, especially as they climbed into the first net room to bounce but they soon got over it and decided they were quite happy to leap and bounce around. The enormous gym balls were their favourites!

Although there’s lots of picnic benches under the nets, it was made very clear to us that you’re not allowed to eat at Treetop Nets (though we did see someone bring in takeaway pizza from the Stables!). What you are allowed to do though is pause your Treetop Nets session, go have some lunch, and then come back in to finish your allotted two hours – which is exactly what we did as, having booked a 12pm slot (who does that?) the kids were starving and getting tired by 1pm. A quick pause for a picnic re-energised them and they were more than ready for round two! So, even if you don’t need to eat your lunch in the middle of your session, consider popping out for snacks to refuel!

The two hour session seemed to fly by and, whilst the kids were tired by the end of their time on the nets, I think they’d all have happily stayed for longer – Ben claimed he’d quite like to stay all day!

You might notice that Amy is missing from our pictures – she has a small fracture in her elbow from a fall the day before – but of course this gives us the perfect excuse to return (Ben is super keen to try the Treetop Trek next time instead!). Having tried the nets once myself, I don’t feel the need to go back on them – they were lots of fun but definitely played to my tendency towards motion sickness so I found I was happier on the ground and the kids certainly didn’t need me up there for any reason other than to take photos of them (which was surprisingly tricky!) or occasionally hold their sacks!

TreeTop Nets – our tips and tricks for making the most of your day

  • Wear  sturdy shoes  – this isn’t an adventure for flip flops. (The ground under foot can be quite damp and muddy too)
  • Dress for a day outdoors – you don’t want to spend the day worrying about getting dirty. Covered legs and long sleeves are preferable too to prevent rope burns.
  • Take a change of clothes with you on a damp or wet day – Ben and Chloe had very wet bottoms by the time they’d finished playing on the nets.
  • If you’re going on the nets with the kids – make sure you’ve got a decent bra on! (I doubled up with a non-wired one over my normal one but a good sports bra would be a better plan!)
  • Take your jewellery off beforehand – no rings, earrings or watches are allowed. The team on reception will provide you with tape if necessary so if you’re freshly pierced like Chloe then you can cover them.
  • Leave everything in the car – there is nowhere to store your stuff at Treetop (unless you’ve got a parent who is simply spectating from below who can be on bag watch). I appreciated that my jacket had zip pockets for my phone and keys!
  • You are not allowed to eat within Treetop Manchester so if you take a picnic, you’ll need to eat this outside of the Treetop area. There’s plenty of space in Heaton Park itself for picnics. Take  something to sit on  as the picnic tables in the park are in high demand.
  • Remind your children to keep themselves well tucked into their sack on the slides to avoid rope burns.
  • The nearest toilets are down near The Stables cafe and farm which is about a five minute walk so don’t wait until you’re bursting!
  • Dose up on  antihistamine  if tree pollen is your nemesis!
  • Consider a quick spritz of  insect repellent  too!
