Standard UK Visitor Visa: This is a visa for individuals from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland who wish to visit the UK for tourism, business meetings, academic conferences, medical reasons, sports, or creative events. The visitor visa typically allows travelers to stay in the UK for up to 6 months.

United Kingdom ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) : The UK ETA is similar to the ones offered by countries like Australia or Canada. By the end of 2024, travelers from visa-exempt countries must register for the UK ETA (electronic travel authorization) before their visit.

Navigating the UK Visitor Visa Interview

Photo of Paul Watson

Embarking on a journey to the United Kingdom involves more than just packing your bags and securing accommodation. For many travelers, the pivotal point is the UK visitor visa interview. This essential step in the application process may seem daunting, but fear not—we’re here to demystify it for you. Let’s delve into the intricacies of the anticipated questions, ensuring you are well-prepared and confident when facing the visa officer. Before planning your trip to the UK, it’s essential to be aware of the current UK visit visa fee , which is subject to change periodically.

1. Personal Information:

As you step into the interview room, expect the initial questions to revolve around your personal details. Your name, date of birth, occupation, and other basic information will likely be explored. Ensuring that your documents are meticulously organized and easily accessible can help kick off the interview on the right note.

2. Purpose of Visit:

The core of the interview often centers around the purpose of your visit. Whether you’re venturing for tourism, business engagements, or visiting friends and family, be prepared to articulate your intentions clearly and concisely.

3. Itinerary and Accommodation:

Providing a well-thought-out travel itinerary is crucial. Expect questions about your plans and details about your stay. Having concrete hotel reservations and a carefully organized travel plan can go a long way in showcasing the legitimacy of your visit.

4. Financial Stability:

Financial questions are inevitable. The visa officer aims to ensure that you can comfortably cover your expenses during your stay. Bring along solid proof of funds, such as recent bank statements or a letter of financial support.

5. Ties to Your Home Country:

Convincing the officer that you will return home after your visit is a crucial aspect of the interview. Be ready to discuss your ties to your home country, which might include your job, family commitments, property ownership, or other substantial connections.

6. Previous Travel History:

Your travel history is likely to be scrutinized. Be prepared to discuss your past experiences, especially if you’ve complied with visa requirements in other countries. This can serve as a testament to your reliability as a traveler.

7. Knowledge of the UK:

Demonstrating that you’ve done your homework about the UK is a plus. Expect questions about the places you plan to visit, local customs, and any specific arrangements you’ve made. This not only shows preparation but also your genuine interest in the country.

8. Duration of Stay:

Clarity on the duration of your stay is essential. Be specific about how long you intend to be in the UK, ensuring that it aligns with the stipulations of the visa. Providing a well-defined timeline adds credibility to your application.

9. Travel History Compliance:

If you’ve been granted visas before, be aware of the conditions attached to those visas. The officer might inquire about your compliance with previous travel requirements. Having a clear understanding of your travel history can bolster your case.

10. Additional Documentation:

While not a question in itself, be prepared to provide any additional documentation that may support your application. This could include invitation letters, employment verification, or any specific requirements outlined in your visa application.

Beyond the Questions: How to Ace the Interview

Understanding the questions is one part of the equation; how you present yourself during the interview is equally important. Stay calm and composed, maintaining a confident demeanor throughout. Remember, the visa officer is not an adversary; they are there to assess the legitimacy of your visit.

Preparation is Key:

Familiarize yourself with the intricacies of your trip and the corresponding visa requirements. Knowing the details of your travel plans, including the places you’ll visit and the activities you’ll engage in, can instill confidence in the visa officer.

Honesty is the Best Policy:

Answer all questions truthfully. Fabricating information or providing misleading answers can jeopardize your chances of securing the visa. The visa officer is skilled at discerning genuine intentions, so be transparent and honest in your responses.

Confidence in Documentation:

Present your documents confidently. Ensure that they are well-organized, easy to navigate, and relevant to the questions asked. This not only reflects your preparedness but also facilitates a smoother interview process.

Closing Thoughts:

While the UK visitor visa interview might seem like a formidable hurdle, it’s essential to approach it with a positive mindset. Preparation, honesty, and confidence are your allies in navigating this process successfully. We wish you the best of luck in obtaining your UK visitor visa, and may your journey to the UK be filled with wonderful experiences! For a seamless application process, it’s crucial to stay updated on any revisions to the UK visit visa fee, ensuring accurate financial planning for your travel.

Settle in the UK

Depending on your current circumstances, you may qualify to settle in the UK after a certain amount of time spent in the country as a lawful resident. For example, if you have lived in the UK on a skilled worker visa, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain after five years. With Indefinite Leave to Remain status, you may be able to acquire British Citizenship after a year or sooner depending on the visa you held before you acquired ILR.

Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)

You will automatically receive your Biometric Residence Permit if you:

  • Are granted permission to stay in the UK for more than 6 months
  • Apply to extend your existing visa for at least 6 more months
  • Apply to settle in the country as a UK national
  • Request to transfer your current permit to a new passport.

Right of Abode

Those who hold dual nationality are entitled to include a Right of Abode stamp in their foreign passport to enter the UK freely. You can also apply if you are:

  • A Commonwealth national whose parents were born as British citizens
  • A Commonwealth woman married to a British national on or before 1 st  January 1983.

However, please note that the eligibility requirements and process are complex – it’s more than meeting the above two points.

Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK (ILR)

As a general rule, you must have spent at least five years in the UK before you can  apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain . How long you must have spent in the UK depends on the visa you hold and how long you have lived in the UK on that visa or other permits.

Once you settle in the UK, you will no longer be subjected to any immigration-related restrictions. You will be free to visit, work and study in the UK, and to travel abroad and re-enter the UK without the need to apply for a visa.

On the other hand, if you spend more than two years abroad, you will lose your permanent residence status.

Holding Indefinite Leave to Remain is a mandatory preliminary requirement before you can apply for British citizenship.

UK Citizenship and Naturalisation

You can  naturalise as a British citizen  after five years of lawful residence in the UK.

Once you get Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK, you may be eligible for British nationality after a further 12-month period or sooner, depending on the visa you held previously and how long you have lived in the UK. Before you send your request to naturalise as a UK national, you must also meet specific requirements, such as:

  • Demonstrate your adequate knowledge of the English language
  • Pass the  Life in the UK Test  to prove your commitment to British customs
  • Be of good character, meaning that you must not hold any severe criminal record nor having lived in the UK in breach of any immigration rule
  • Not have spent more than 450 days outside the UK during your qualifying period

Since British naturalisation is a complicated process that requires someone to send a strong portfolio of documents and evidence to the UKVI, it is always advisable to seek guidance from an expert immigration lawyer.

UK Visa appeal

We understand the frustration that comes with a UK Visa refusal. However, a refusal does not necessarily mean that you will be unable to come to the UK.

The  UK Visa appeal  process means that there are routes available for individuals who wish to challenge the decision.

In the past, there were broader rights of appeal against immigration or visa decisions, but this has changed to primarily rights of administrative review of the decision.

The right to appeal a UK Visa decision is primarily limited to grounds of human rights. The complexity of immigration law means that it is strongly recommended to work with a specialist immigration solicitor if you wish to appeal a UK Visa decision.

Other reasons why an appeal may proceed to the Immigration and Asylum Chamber include:

  • The decision is not compatible with immigration rules
  • The decision breaches the Race and Religion Act, Section 19B
  • The decision breaches the applicant’s rights under the Community Treaties because of their relation to an EEA national family member
  • The decision breaches some other law, apart from an immigration law
  • That the decision should have been made differently compared to how the decision maker made the legal judgement
  • The decision would result in the applicant’s human rights under the Refugee Convention and Human Rights Act being breached if the individual was removed from the UK

How to appeal UK Visa refusals

It is important to act quickly if you are unhappy with the outcome of an immigration decision. The deadlines include 14 calendar days for individuals who apply within the UK, or 28 days if they apply outside the UK.

However, some visa refusals come with no right to appeal. In cases like this, pre-action protocol for judicial review may be your next best option. This is not right for every case – it is important that you discuss with a lawyer to understand if this option is available to you.

Due to the nature of the UK’s legal landscape when it comes to immigration law, working with an experienced legal adviser may give you a better chance of a successful outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need a visa to visit the uk.

Not all travellers who wish to visit the UK are required to apply for a visa. The following categories do not need to submit their application to the UKVI:

  • European citizens
  • Nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Commonwealth citizens
  • Those who already hold settled status in the UK
  • Returning residents (holding Indefinite Leave to Remain)
  • Citizens of countries not listed on the Visa Nationals list

If you are unsure whether you need a visa to visit the UK, you can ask for the advice of one of IAS’ professional lawyers.

Why do I need to apply for the correct visa category?

It is essential to apply for the most appropriate visa category to your personal circumstances. For example, if you have children, you must include them in your form.

If you fail to individuate the visa you need to apply for, or if you don’t meet the relevant requirements, your application will be refused. This will translate into a loss of money and time. If your case is refused, your application fee will not be refunded.

Submitting the wrong form can also lead to complications or delays with your case. This may compromise your current immigration status, especially if you are trying to extend your existing visa or trying to switch into another category while you are already in the UK.

How to apply for UK Visas?

UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) has implemented an application system known as Entry Clearance (EC). Under this system, citizens who are non-UK-nationals but who wish to visit and enter the country for different purposes can apply for a visa based on their circumstances.

This process usually includes an appointment to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photos) to be taken and recorded before they visit the UK.

Can I apply for a UK visa for my dependents?

If one of your family members is a British citizen or settled person, you can apply for a Family Visa. Otherwise, you may be eligible to enter the UK as a dependent of a work or ancestry visa.

For immigration purposes, the following categories can be dependents of an eligible visa:

  • The partner (either the spouse, fiancé or civil partner)
  • A minor child (under 18 years old).

Successful applicants will be granted the right to remain in the UK in line with the expiry date of the PBS holder’s status.

PBS dependants are allowed to work in the UK. If they wish to study in the country, they may be required to obtain an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate, depending on the course.

How can I extend my UK Visa?

The majority of UK Visas will expire after a specific time, that depends on your visa category. The only immigration status that do not need to be extended are ILR and British citizenship.

If it essential to understand precisely when your visa is going to expire, and when you must submit your extension application. Otherwise, you may risk to overstay your permission, and face severe consequences.

Do not forget that, once you have submitted your renewal request, you may need to wait up to 8 weeks before you get a decision from the Home Office.

If your visa is going to expire any time soon and you wish to receive professional advice on how to extend it, our immigration lawyers will be happy to help.

When should I start applying for my UK Visa?

As a general rule, you should send your application form at most 90 days before your intended date of arrival in the UK.

The latest you can submit your forms is at most 15 working days before you wish to visit the UK.

What is the average UK Visa processing time?

The waiting time for receiving a verdict from the Home Office will depend on the visa category or status you are applying for.

However, you can receive a faster decision on your case if you choose the Home Office’s priority service. The cost for this service is £500, to be paid in addition to your application fee, and it allows you to receive a decision from the UKVI within 5 working days.

For a surcharge of £800, you can access to the Home Office’s super-priority service. This will make your final decision available by the end of the next working day (or 2 working days if the day after your UKVCAS appointment is at the weekend.

Please note that the Home Office priority and super-priority services availability is subject to the visa you applied for and the country from where you applied.

If your application is time-sensitive and you wish to speed up your application process, IAS offers a premium Fast Track service . Get in touch with our immigration specialists to find out how we can help you submit your forms within any strict deadline.

What is the Immigration Health Surcharge, and do I need to pay for it?

Depending on the immigration status you are applying for, you may be required to pay a healthcare surcharge, also known as the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

You must pay your fee directly when you send your application form online. If you are applying by post, you will need to include your IHS reference number on your forms.

As soon as you pay the surcharge and your application is granted, you can start using the National Health Service (NHS). However, you will still need to pay for additional services, such as prescriptions, eye tests and dental treatments.

Is adequate knowledge of English required to enter the UK?

Certain applications require, among other criteria, specific knowledge of written and spoken English. For example, this condition is mandatory for those applying for a Spouse Visa or who wish to settle in the UK under ILR.

You can prove your knowledge of the English language by:

  • Providing a valid academic qualification. The UKVI will only accept degrees or other qualifications that were taught or researched in English, and that are recognised by UK ECCTIS.
  • Taking an approved English language test with at least CEFT level A1. Some visa categories require a higher knowledge of the language, especially if you wish to settle in the UK.

Applicants who are under the age of 18 or over 65, or who have a physical or mental condition, may be exempt from the English language requirement.

My application has been refused. Can I submit an appeal?

Together with your refusal letter, you will receive from the Home Office further instructions on your right to appeal against its decision.

If you are not granted the right of appeal, you may be offered the chance for an administrative review.

You will only have 28 days to send your appeal application if you applied from outside the UK or 14 days if you applied from within the UK. Nevertheless, before you proceed, it is essential to understand the reasons for your refusal, so you can ensure to avoid further mistakes. In the majority of cases, submitting a new application may be less time consuming and cost-effective than appealing against the authorities’ decision.

Proceeding with an appeal or administrative review case is always complicated. For this reason, you should seek professional legal guidance.

Call us or enquire online to learn more about our  Appeal package  and all our bespoke immigration services.

What happens if I overstay my visa?

It is a criminal offence under section 24 of the Immigration Act 1971 to overstay your visa. In other words, when your permit expires you must leave the UK within 30 days unless there are reasonable causes to do otherwise.

If you overstay your visa, you will face long term consequences. For example, if you leave the UK voluntarily after your 30-day period, you may be banned from re-entering the country from one to ten years. You can avoid the ban by leaving the country at your own expense.

Overstaying your visa will harm any future applications you will make to re-enter and visit the UK. Besides, you will not be considered of good character in any circumstances, and you will thus never be allowed to naturalise as a British citizen.

Can I get a UK Visa refund?

Under specific circumstances, you may get a refund for your application if you withdraw your form before your biometrics are collected.

If you applied from outside the UK, you would need to contact the UKVI. In this case, you will receive a refund only if your application hasn’t been processed yet.

Applications made from within the UK can be withdrawn by submitting the relevant online form. However, it must be noted that it is not possible to receive a fee refund for applications made in the UK.

Who can apply for a Spouse Visa?

To qualify for a Partner or Marriage Visa, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Be at least 18
  • Be legally married to your partner, who must be a British national or settled person
  • Intend to live together with your spouse permanently
  • Prove that you meet specific financial requirements, and have enough money to support yourselves and your dependants without claiming public funds. The minimum income threshold is £18,600, but the required sum may be higher if you wish to include your dependent children in your application
  • Have access to suitable accommodation, that meets the UK living standards
  • Meet the English language requirement

To receive guidance on how to prepare your application and compile a successful portfolio of documents, call us or get in touch through our live chat.

Can a Student Visa holder work in the UK?

UK immigration law states that students must spend at least 15 hours a week in study. However, eligible pupils may be granted the right to work up to 20 hours per week while they study and full-time during the holidays.

UK TOURIST VISA APPLICATION PROCESS

United Kingdom UK Tourist Visa Requirements - Visa Application

First, check if you need a visitor visa to travel to the UK in the “UK tourist visa requirements by nationality” section above.

Alternatively, you can check your eligibility and requirements on the UK gov website .

Validity of UK tourist visa

UK tourist visas are valid for 6 months from the date of visa issue.

Example: If your UK visa was issued on January 15, the visa will be valid until July 15.

NOTE There have been instances where visas were issued with validity starting from the date of travel mentioned in the visa application.

When to apply for UK visa

You can apply for a UK visa up to 3 months in advance.

Example: If you plan to visit the UK on April 15, you can apply for your UK visa on or after January 16.

Also, keep in mind that you must apply for your UK visa at least 3 weeks prior to your travel, otherwise, you may not receive your visa on time. There are no refunds if you receive your visa after your travel date.

IMPORTANT The UK visa process can take up to 3 weeks and even longer in some cases. I strongly recommend applying for your UK visa at least 2 months in advance.

How long can you stay in the UK?

The UK tourist visa allows you to stay up to 180 days in the UK. But if you stay that long continuously in the UK on a tourist visa, you will have serious trouble getting another UK visa in the future or entering the UK next time.

Here is my advice. Stick to the days you have mentioned in your UK visa application. A few days more or less is fine. But staying months on your UK tourist visa will pretty much look like you “live in the UK” rather than “vacation/holiday”.

Application procedure

The UK visa application is online. You must apply for the visa online at the UK Visas and Immigration website

Below are the steps you will go through for your UK tourist visa application

  • Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website
  • Select your preferred language, type of visa, your country, nearest visa application center, etc
  • Create a login using email and password
  • Complete in the application form
  • Sign the declaration
  • Pay visa fee
  • Submit the application
  • Download and print the submitted visa application form
  • Make an appointment at your nearest UK visa application center
  • Attend the appointment at your nearest UK visa application center
  • Submit your passport, visa application and supporting documents at the visa application center
  • If applying from the US, Australia or New Zealand, mail your passport, visa application and biometrics receipt to your nearest visa application center
  • Pickup/receive the passport when the visa decision is made

Below are some of the information you will provide in the application form

  • Your travel dates to the UK
  • Your hotel address and telephone number in the UK
  • Your total estimated cost for the trip
  • Your present home address and how many years you’ve lived there
  • Your parents’ names and their dates of birth
  • Your annual income
  • Your travel history for the past 10 years
  • Your employer details including the address and telephone number

  • Proof of funds ( bank statements or payslips for the last 6 months)
  • Proof of legal residence (if applying from a 3rd country. you must submit a copy of your visa or residence permit of that country)

Do you need flight tickets and hotel bookings for the UK visa application?

UKVI has stopped asking for flight tickets and hotel bookings for UK visa applications. But some nationalities are still being asked to submit flight tickets and hotel bookings.

When you complete your online UK visa application, you will see a checklist of documents to be uploaded. Check if you are asked to submit flight tickets and hotel bookings.

Even if you are asked to submit your flight tickets and hotel bookings, you should not book any flights/hotel until your UK visa is approved.

For flights, get a price quote from British Airways which can be used as a flight itinerary for your UK visa application. Visa ticket booking agencies such as DummyTicket offer flight itineraries for the UK visa for $19, valid for 2-3 weeks.

For hotel, book a refundable or pay at check-in hotel on booking.com or Expedia . Cancel the booking after your visa is approved.

For more options, check out my detailed flight itinerary and hotel reservation articles.

Photo requirements

A passport-size photo is only required if are exempt from biometrics. All tourist visa applicants MUST give their biometrics. Your fingerprints and digital photos are taken during your biometrics appointment.

Since all tourist visa applicants MUST give their biometrics, a passport-size photo is not required. But, I suggest bringing one with you on the day of your biometrics appointment just in case.

Visa application fee

The UK tourist visa application fee is £95 GBP. You will pay this fee in your local currency. Due to exchange rates, you may end up paying about £2 – £5 GBP more.

You can use the UK home office visa fee wizard to find out the exact visa fee that you would need to pay in your local currency.

If you are applying for a long-term UK tourist visa, below is the visa fee for 2, 5 and 10-year tourist visas.

  • 2 years: £361 GBP
  • 5 years: £655 GBP
  • 10 years: £822 GBP

Visa appointment

As part of the online application process, you will be prompted to make a visa appointment at your nearest UK Visa Application Center . Visa Application Centers are run by either VFSGlobal or TLSContact in conjunction with UK Visas and Immigration.

On the day of the appointment, you will give your biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and submit your original documents. You must bring all your original documents along with one photocopy of each including your passport.

Applicants from the USA, Australia (Adelaide and Hobart only) and New Zealand

You must give your biometrics at your nearest Biometric Enrollment Center and later send/post your documents to the nearest UK Visa Application Center.

During your online UK visa application, you will be prompted to make a biometrics appointment at your nearest Biometric enrollment center.

  • Biometric enrollment centers in the USA are run by the US Homeland Security.
  • Biometric enrollment centers in Australia are run by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
  • Biometric enrollment centers in New Zealand are run by Immigration New Zealand.

The biometrics appointment takes about 10-15 minutes. You will give your fingerprints and photo. You will receive an acknowledgment stamp on the biometric appointment confirmation.

You must then mail your original passport, visa application, biometric confirmation with the stamp, supporting documents and return postage to the UK Visa Application Center you have selected during your online visa application.

You will be notified via email when the UK Visa Application Center receives your documents.

Visa processing time

The UK tourist visa processing takes up to 3 weeks. There have been incidents where UKVI has taken over 2 months to process, especially when the visa applications are “not straightforward”.

UKVI considers a visa application “not straightforward” if additional information is required to process the visa. Additional information can be, verifying information, background check or requesting additional documents. UKVI usually notifies you in such cases and requests any additional documentation necessary.

Keeping such incidents in mind, ALWAYS apply for your UK visa at least 2 months prior to your travel.

If you have to travel sooner, you should purchase the “Priority Visa Service” while applying online. Or at least before you mail/submit your documents. This way your visa application will be processed within 5 working days.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE When I applied for my UK visa, the visa processing time was about 2 weeks. I had a planned trip to Canada before my trip to the UK. My trip to Canada was in 4 weeks, so I thought I had enough time to apply for my UK visa. However after I submitted my passport, the email confirmation said the visa process would take up to 4 weeks. I panicked. I went ahead and paid for the priority visa service. I panicked again. Then I emailed a formal visa withdrawal request, so I could at least get my passport back and make my trip to Canada. However, my visa was processed within 2 days of paying the priority visa service fee. Please do not make the same mistake as I did. Apply for your UK visa at least 2 months prior to your travel.

Visa application status tracking

Online visa application tracking is NOT AVAILABLE on the UK Visas and Immigration website. To track your UK visa application status, you must use UK Visas and Immigration’s email or phone option, which unfortunately is NOT FREE.

UKVI charges for all phone and email inquiries.

Below are UK Visa and Immigration phone, email details and charges.

PHONE Telephone: +44 2034811736 Available 24 hours from Monday to Friday Calls cost £1.37 per minute plus any international call charges

EMAIL Email communication must be initiated via Email UK Visas and Immigration Email inquiries cost £5.48. Follow-up emails after that are not charged. You will receive a response to your email within 2 working days.

You must give out your credit card information for billing when you start the phone inquiry. For email, you must fill out the payment form and then you can submit your email inquiry.

PERSONAL OPINION Email inquiries generally receive a standard response saying that your application is “in process”. Phone inquiries are slightly better and cheaper.

Priority visa service

If you would need to travel to the UK urgently, you can opt for the “Priority Visa Service”.  This service is expensive and may not be available in all countries. If available, you will see the option in your online UK visa application.

  • Priority visa service fee: £220 GBP
  • Visa processing time: Guaranteed in 5 working days

Priority visa service must be purchased during your online visa application. This will ensure your visa is processed within 5 days.

Purchasing this service after you have submitted/mailed your documents will take much longer than 5 working days. You must first pay the fee on the Visa Application Center (VAC) website and then email the receipt to the Visa Application Center where you have submitted/sent your documents. It can take more than a day for the VAC staff to locate your packet and push it into the priority queue

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I purchased my priority service after I had mailed my documents. My visa application was approved within two days of buying the priority visa service.

Super priority visa service

If you would need to travel to the UK immediately, you can opt for “Super Priority Visa Service”. This service comes with a hefty price tag, so purchase this service only in super urgent, emergency cases.

  • Super priority visa service fee: £956 GBP
  • Visa processing time: Guaranteed in 24 hours

Cancel your UK visa application

If you haven’t given your biometrics at the visa application center yet, you can cancel your UK visa application and get a full refund of your visa fee. The procedure to cancel your UK visa application depends on at what stage your application is in.

Application not submitted and fee not paid : If you haven’t paid your fee and haven’t submitted your application, there is a “Delete Application” option that will delete your current visa application.

Application not submitted but fee already paid : If you have already paid your fee and have not yet submitted your application, you can still delete your application but you may have to send a formal refund request in writing to the visa application center.

Application submitted, fee paid but haven’t given your biometrics : If you haven’t given your biometrics at VFS/BLS, you can cancel your application and request for a refund. The refunds take 4 weeks.

Application submitted, fee paid, biometric given , and documents/passport already submitted: If you have already given your biometrics and submitted your documents/passport, you CANNOT cancel your visa application anymore. You can only WITHDRAW your visa application. You must email the visa application center a formal withdrawal request. Upon receipt of the withdrawal request, the visa application center will return/mail your passport back. Any visa fee and priority service fee paid are not refundable.

IMPORTANT Even though UKVI says the refunds are processed in 4 weeks, it usually takes 8 weeks or even longer. There have been instances where applicants waited several weeks and some even gave up on their refunds. However, I have seen applicants having success in getting their refunds by reminding UKVI with phone calls or emails. It costs about $5 USD to email them, but it helps in getting your refund eventually.

Withdraw your UK visa application

The UK visa application center keeps the passport for the entirety of the visa process, which could be 3 weeks or more. There may be emergencies where you need to have your passport with you. The only way to request your passport back is by formally withdrawing your visa application.

If you withdraw your application, the visa fee and any priority service fee you have paid are NOT refundable.

To withdraw a visa application, you must submit a withdrawal request along with the reason for the withdrawal to the visa application center via email. It might take up to 72 hours for the consulate to locate your packet and send it back to you.

You must first call/email the UK Visas and Immigration mentioning your intention to withdraw your application. They will guide you through the process of withdrawing your application. Usually, the UK visa application withdrawal request should be a signed document with personal information including the GWF number. This document must be printed and signed. It must be scanned and emailed to the visa application center. Below is a sample withdrawal request letter.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hereby request to withdraw my UK visa application. I understand that the visa fee is non-refundable. I also understand that my package may not be shipped for up to 72 hours.

Full Name of the Applicant: <name> GWF Number: <GWF number> Date of Birth: <date of birth> Nationality: <Nationality> Country of Residence: <Country of residence> Passport number: <Passport number> Type of Visa Applied: General Visit (up to 6 months) Biometric taken date:  <biometric date> Visa application centre’s address:  <address of the visa application center where you have submitted your documents> Contact number of the applicant: <Your phone number>

Priority Service Paid: <YES/NO> Priority Service Paid On: <Priority service purchased date>

Reason for Withdrawal: Emergency international travel has been scheduled. I need to have my passport in order to travel. Please return my passport as soon as possible. Thank you!

<Your signature here> Signed: <Your full name> Date: <date>

IMPORTANT Cancellation or withdrawal is NOT a refusal. It WILL NOT affect your future UK visa applications. You don’t need to mention it in your future UK visa applications either.

Entering the UK by air

At the immigration, the officers may ask you questions about your trip, how long you plan to stay, your next destination, etc. You may be asked to show your return/onward ticket and your hotel booking. If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, you can use OnwardTicket to get proof of your onward ticket.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: The immigration officer at Heathrow Airport asked me to show my return/onward ticket. I had a print of my onward ticket, so quickly took it out and gave it to the immigration officer.

If you are flying out of Heathrow Airport, make sure to arrive early. The airport is huge and you may have to take a bus from the gate to the flight.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GWF number in UK visa application ?

GWF reference number is the unique visa application number that was provided to you on your visa application submission. You must provide your GWF number when calling or emailing UK Visas and Immigration. Without the GWF number, UK Visas and Immigration will not be able to provide you with a status update on your visa application.

What to do if my UK visa application is refused?

If your UK visa application is refused, the first thing is to understand the  reasons for your UK visa refusal . If the reason is due to missing information, proof of funds or documentation, make sure to fix these the next time you apply for your UK visa.

Write a detailed cover letter explaining the reasons for your previous visa refusal, missing information/documentation and any additional information/documentation that you have provided in the new application. This will help the ECOs cut to the chase and focus on the new information/documentation.

There is no “appeal” for UK visa. So, re-apply for your UK visa by making sure you have the new information, proofs and documents that were lacking previously. You must pay the visa fee again as the fee paid for your previous application was non-refundable.

If you do not know the reason for your visa refusal/denial, give at least 6 months before you apply for the visa again.

Can I get my UK visa application fee refund if denied?

No. The visa fee and any priority service fee paid are non-refundable if your visa application is denied. The visa fee is also non-refundable in incidents where the visa is approved for less number of days than requested.

I’m planning to visit the UK and Schengen countries on a single trip. Should I apply for my UK visa first or Schengen visa first?

If you plan to visit the UK and Schengen countries on a single trip, ALWAYS apply for your UK visa first.

UKVI keeps the passport for the entirety of the visa process and there is no visa status tracking. Calls and emails to customer service are charged. Even if you pay and contact, you will usually get a canned response. If your UK visa is refused, there is no “appeal”. You can only re-apply, which means you have to repeat the entire process again.

On the other hand, the Schengen visa application process is much streamlined. There is application tracking, customer service and appeal.

I highly recommend applying for your UK visa first and get done with it. After that, apply for your Schengen visa.

When applying for your UK visa, show a “UK-only” itinerary for your UK visa. This eliminates the need for submitting your Schengen visa, flights in/out of the Schengen region, etc.

United Kingdom UK Tourist Visa Requirements - London Tower Bridge

The UK tourist visa requirements are clear and easy to understand. But, the visa application process is long and expensive. Apply at least 2 months in advance, and follow all the proper steps and documentation. Tourist visas are usually multiple-entry with 6 months validity.

uk visit visa

IN THIS SECTION

There is no specific ‘visit visa’ for the UK; it’s a general term used colloquially to refer to a number of routes, each designed to accommodate the diverse needs and circumstances of international visitors.

Whether you’re planning to visit the UK for a holiday, sampling UK culture or exploring business opportunities, you’ll need to have secured the correct type of UK visit visa to avoid issues at the border, and to start your time in the UK in the best way.

In this comprehensive guide, we explore the various pathways to visit the UK to help you choose the most appropriate route for your needs.

Section A: Standard Visitor Visa

The UK Standard Visitor Visa is a versatile route catering to visa-nationals who wish to enter the United Kingdom for short stays for tourism, business engagements, or short-term study.

1. What is the Standard Visitor Visa

Travellers from designated visa-national countries need a visa to visit the UK for up to six months.

The Standard Visitor Visa accommodates several purposes:

a. Tourism:  For those visiting the UK for leisure, sightseeing, or to see family and friends.

b. Business:  Business-related activities include attending meetings, conferences, seminars, or interviews.

c. Short-term Study:  This visa allows for short educational courses lasting up to 6 months.

d. Medical Treatment:  Visitors may come to the UK to receive certain types of medical treatment.

e. Academic Visitors:  Scientists, researchers, academics, senior doctors, and dentists can participate in specific work-related activities as visitors.

f. Paid Engagements:  Visitors who are experts in their field can carry out specific paid engagements or events at the invitation of a UK-based client.

The Standard Visitor visa allows stays of up to 6 months, with multiple visits permissible within the visa’s validity period.

2. Eligibility and Application Process

To be eligible for a Standard Visitor Visa, applicants must prove that they:

a. Plan to leave the UK at the end of their visit.

b. Can support themselves and any dependents for the duration of the trip.

c. Can pay for their return or onward journey and any other costs related to their visit.

d. Have a genuine reason for their visit and will not undertake any prohibited activities, such as receiving public funds, marrying, or entering into a civil partnership.

3. Application Process

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Ensure your trip falls under the activities permitted by the Standard Visitor Visa. Familiarise yourself with the eligibility criteria, such as proving you’ll leave the UK at the end of your visit and can support yourself during your stay.

Step 2: Complete the Online Application

Visit the official UK government website to complete the visa application form (VAF) for the Standard Visitor Visa.

The application fee must be paid online as part of your application process. Ensure you receive a confirmation of payment.

Step 3: Book and Attend Your Biometric Appointment

After submitting your online application, you must book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph).

Bring your passport, a printout of your appointment confirmation, and all the required supporting documents to your appointment.

Step 4: Wait for a Decision

Once your application is processed, you will be informed about the decision. Depending on the service options available in your country, your passport will either be returned to you by mail, or you’ll need to pick it up from the VAC.

Step 5: Prepare for Your Trip

If your visa is approved, check the visa vignette in your passport for any errors and understand the conditions of your visa.

Once you have your visa, you can travel to the UK.

4. Required Documents

Applicants must provide several documents, including:

a. A valid travel document or passport.

b. Evidence of the purpose of the visit (e.g., letter of invitation, travel itinerary).

c. Proof of accommodation and return travel.

d. Financial evidence showing enough funds to cover all expenses during the stay.

The specific documents will depend on the nature of your planned activities. For example, as an academic visitor, you may need to provide evidence from your employer outlining the research.

5. Processing Times

Visa processing times can vary, but applicants should generally receive a decision within three weeks of the visa application centre appointment. However, this timeframe may extend during peak travel seasons or due to individual circumstances requiring further scrutiny.

Section B: Transit Visa

When your travel plans require you to pass through the UK en route to another destination, you might need a Transit Visa.

1. What is the Transit Visa

The UK transit routes are designed for certain travellers who do not intend to stay in the UK but need to pass through its borders.

A Transit Visa is required if you are passing through the UK to another country, will not go through UK border control, and are from a country that does not have a visa exemption for transit.

You will also need a Transit Visa if you are going through UK border control but leaving the UK within 48 hours, even if you are from a country that normally does not require a visa for short stays. This includes changing airports or leaving the airport for any reason.

2. Types of Transit Visa

There are two types of Transit Visa, catering for different types of transiters: the Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) and the Visitor in Transit Visa.

a. Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV)  This visa is for those who don’t pass through UK border control and only need to change planes. The DATV is suitable for travellers whose layover does not involve leaving the airport’s international transit area. It’s valid for up to 24 hours.

b. Visitor in Transit Visa If your layover requires you to pass through UK border control—for example, to change airports or if you’re arriving and departing by different means (plane to train)—you’ll need this visa. It allows a stay of up to 48 hours and is the right choice if you need to enter the UK briefly.

3. Application and Required Documentation

For both types of Transit Visas, the application process involves:

a. Completing an online application Start this process well before your travel dates. Ensure you select the correct visa type based on your transit needs.

b. Scheduling an appointment You must book an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your biometric information.

c. Preparing your documents Essential documents include a current passport or other valid travel identification and proof of your onward journey. This could be a confirmed flight ticket showing your final destination after transiting through the UK.

d. Proof of visa for your onward destination If the country you are travelling to after your UK transit requires a visa, you must provide evidence that you have this visa.

Section C: Marriage Visitor Visa

If you plan to come to the UK to get married or enter into a civil partnership without intending to stay or settle afterwards, you’ll need a Marriage visitor Visa.

1. What is the Marriage Visitor Visa

The Marriage Visitor Visa is designed for those who wish to celebrate their marriage or civil partnership in the UK without intending to stay long-term.

The Marriage Visitor Visa is valid for 6 months, and you must leave the UK at the end of this period or before the visa expires.

This visa is for couples seeking to celebrate their union in the UK’s picturesque locales or historic venues.

This could include getting married or registering a civil partnership in the UK, holding a symbolic wedding ceremony in the UK, even if legally married elsewhere.

You cannot switch to another visa category from within the UK on this visa, and employment and access to public funds are not permitted during your stay.

The visa is also suitable for individuals attending a marriage or civil partnership as guests if they come from a country that requires a visa to enter the UK and do not plan to stay beyond six months.

2. Application Process

To apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa, you will need to follow these steps:

a. Online Application Start by filling out the visa application form on the UK government website. This form will ask about your travel plans, personal information, and details of your wedding or civil partnership.

b. Fee Payment The application fee for the Marriage Visitor Visa must be paid online during the application process.

c. Book and Attend an Appointment After submitting your online application, you must book an appointment at a visa application centre. Here, you’ll provide your fingerprints and photograph (biometric information) and submit your supporting documents.

3. Supporting Documents

You’ll need to provide several documents with your application, including:

a. A valid passport or travel document.

b. Provide proof of your relationship with your partner, such as communication records or photos.

c. Details of your wedding or civil partnership plans, including dates and venues.

d. Evidence of your financial ability to cover the trip and wedding expenses, such as bank statements.

e. information about where you will stay in the UK.

f. Proof that you intend to leave the UK after your visit, such as a letter from your employer or education institution.

Please read our detailed guide to the Marriage Visitor Visa here >>

Section D: Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The UK is implementing an ETA scheme for travellers from countries that previously did not require a visa for short stays or transits through the UK.

1. What is Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for the UK

The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, allowing them to travel to and enter the UK. It’s designed to pre-screen travellers for security purposes before they arrive at the UK border.

The ETA is required for visiting and transiting passengers, ensuring that individuals without a visa can still be checked before travelling.

Travellers in the UK under the Creative Worker concession will also need an ETA.

The ETA represents a significant shift in the UK’s approach to managing the entry of visa-exempt visitors, aiming to simplify the entry process while maintaining high security and immigration standards akin to other global electronic travel authorisation systems such as the USA’s ESTA programme.

The rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, when it will include all non-visa nationals, including US, EU, and EEA nationals.

2. Who needs an ETA?

The ETA requirement will apply to nationals from countries that do not need a visa for short visits to the UK or transiting. This includes tourists, business visitors, and individuals in transit to other destinations.

The list of nationalities requiring an ETA is constantly evolving. Travellers are advised to check if their country has been included on the UK’s ETA list.

As of April 2024, the ETA applies to nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

All relevant travellers, including children and babies, will need an ETA.

In addition, those coming to the UK under the Creative Worker concession will also require an ETA.

Certain groups, such as diplomats or those with other types of official status, may be exempt from the ETA requirement. It’s important to check the latest guidance to confirm whether you need an ETA based on your specific circumstances.

3. How to Apply for an ETA

Applying for an ETA is intended to be a straightforward, user-friendly process:

a. Application form Travellers must complete the application form, which is available on the official UK government website or through the official app.

The form will require basic personal and contact information and answers to questions related to security and immigration history.

b. Application Fee It costs £10 to apply for the ETA, payable online during submission.

c. Documentation Applicants must have their valid passports on hand when completing the form, and a photograph must be uploaded.

d. Approval and Notification After applying, travellers will receive their ETA approval electronically, typically within three days.

Authorisation is linked to the passport used during the application process. While no physical document is required at the border, it is advisable to save an image of the confirmation to your phone or print out a copy to avoid issues when travelling.

Section E: ADS Agreement for Chinese Tour Groups

Chinese citizens planning to come to the UK as part of a tourist group should look at the Chinese tour group visa for streamlined visa application processing.

1. What is the ADS Agreement for Chinese Tour Groups

The Approved Destination Status (ADS) Agreement is a bilateral tourism arrangement between the United Kingdom and China. Established to encourage and simplify the process for Chinese tourists wishing to visit the UK in groups, the ADS Agreement plays a crucial role in boosting cultural exchange and tourism between the two nations. It facilitates streamlined visa application processes for Chinese citizens touring the UK as part of organised groups.

The ADS Agreement allows Chinese tour groups to apply for UK visas faster and more efficiently than the standard visitor visa application procedure through an accredited process. The visa allows visits of up to 30 days.

This agreement is designed for tour groups with at least five people and is organised by travel agencies approved and recognised under the ADS scheme.

These travel agencies are vetted and authorised by both the Chinese and UK governments, ensuring a high standard of service and reliability.

2. Benefits for Chinese Citizens Touring the UK in Groups

The ADS scheme encourages cultural exchange by facilitating group tours to the UK, allowing Chinese citizens to explore British culture, history, and landmarks.

One of the primary benefits of the ADS Agreement is the simplified and expedited visa application process for group members, making it easier for Chinese tourists to plan and book their UK tours.

The cost of visas and processing fees are also typically lower for ADS tour groups compared to individual applications.

Compared with travelling as an individual, ADS-accredited tour groups provide safety and convenience, with arrangements for accommodation, transport, and itineraries handled by experienced travel agencies.

3. How to Apply through an ADS-Licensed Travel Agent

a. Find an ADS-Licensed Travel Agent Under the ADS Agreement, Chinese tourists interested in travelling to the UK should start by identifying a travel agency in China with an ADS license. These agencies are authorised to organise tour groups to the UK under this specific agreement.

b. Choose a Tour Package Select a tour package that fits your interests and schedule. ADS-licensed travel agents offer packages covering different attractions, cities, and durations.

c. Application Process The travel agency will handle the visa application process on behalf of the group. This typically includes collecting necessary documentation from each traveller, filling out application forms, and submitting the applications to the UK visa authorities.

d. Prepare Required Documents Travellers will need to provide personal and travel documents to the travel agency, which may include a valid passport, completed visa application forms, and possibly additional information depending on the specific requirements of the tour package.

e. Wait for Approval Once the travel agency submits the visa applications, the group must wait for approval from the UK visa authorities. The travel agency will keep the group informed about the status of their application and any further steps needed.

Section G: FAQs about Visiting the UK

Do I need a visa to visit the UK? It depends on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Many countries are visa-exempt for short stays, but you may still need to apply for a visa if you plan to work, study, or stay longer than the allowed period.

How long can I stay in the UK with a Standard Visitor Visa? The Standard Visitor Visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit. For certain activities, like academic research or accompanying a child studying in the UK, you may be able to stay longer.

Can I extend my visa while in the UK? Most visitor visas, including the Standard Visitor Visa, cannot be extended. You must leave the UK before your visa expires. However, in exceptional circumstances, such as for medical reasons, you may be able to apply for an extension.

What is the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and do I need one? The ETA is a new requirement for visa-exempt visitors to the UK designed to enhance border security. The scheme is being rolled out in phases, and visitors from certain countries will need to obtain an ETA before their travel.

How do I apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa? You can apply online through the UK government’s official website. You’ll need to provide evidence of your wedding plans in the UK, prove that you intend to leave after your visit, and show that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay without working.

What documents do I need for a Transit Visa? For a Transit Visa, you’ll typically need your current passport, proof of your onward journey (such as flight tickets), and sometimes a visa for your next destination if required.

Can I work in the UK with a Visitor Visa? No, you cannot take up employment, produce goods, provide services, or do business in the UK if you have entered on a visitor visa. This includes voluntary work and internships.

How can I find an ADS-licensed travel agent for a trip from China to the UK? Both the Chinese and UK governments approve ADS-licensed travel agents. A list of licensed agents is usually available through the Chinese National Tourism Administration or the UK Embassy’s website in China.

What if my visa application is denied? If your visa application is denied, you will receive a letter explaining the reasons for the refusal. You can apply again, but it’s essential to address the reasons for the refusal in your new application.

UK Visitor Visa (Tourism or Leisure) - Top 10 FAQs

Most visitors to the UK will need to make an application for a UK visit visa from their country of residence, before travelling. In this post we answer some of the questions that are most frequently asked by individuals who wish to visit the UK as a Standard Visitor for the purpose of tourism or leisure .

What are the eligibility requirements for a UK Visitor Visa application?

In making an application for a UK Visitor Visa you will be required to prove:

  • You will leave the UK at the end of your visit;
  • You will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK your main home;
  • You’re able to support yourself and your dependants during your trip (or have funding from someone else to support you);
  • You are able to pay for your return or onward journey (or have funding from someone else to pay for the journey);
  • You have proof of any business or other activities you want to do in the UK, as allowed by the Visitor Rules .

What can I do as a Standard Visitor in the UK?

As a visitor to the UK for the purpose of tourism or leisure, you will be permitted to:

  • Visit friends and family and/or come to the UK for a holiday;
  • Take part in educational exchanges programmes;
  • Attend recreational courses for a maximum of 30 days;
  • Volunteer with a registered charity for a maximum of 30 days.

What does it mean to be a “Genuine Visitor”?

In order to succeed with an application for a UK Visit Visa, you will need to satisfy UK Visas and Immigration that you are a genuine visitor. This means that you will need to show you are genuinely seeking entry to the UK for a purpose permitted by the visitor routes, will not undertake any prohibited activities during your stay in the UK, will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits and will not make the UK your home

The Visit guidance lists factors which will be considered by a Caseworker in assessing whether an applicant is a genuine visitor. Theses include your:

  • Previous immigration history to the UK and other countries;
  • Financial circumstances as well as your family, social and economic background;
  • Personal and economic ties to the UK.

In assessing your genuineness, the Caseworker will also consider the cumulative period of time you have spent in the UK over the last 12 months and the duration of your previous visits compared to what was stated on your visa application form or on arrival to the UK.

If you intend to visit the UK for any other reason including to marry or form a civil partnership , to receive private medical treatment , or to undertake business activities , you must apply for the specific visit corresponding to the purpose of your visit.

What reasons could a Caseworker have for doubting that I am applying as a Genuine Visitor?

The Visit Guidance provides a non-exhaustive list of reasons a Caseworker may doubt whether you are a Genuine Visitor. This includes whether or if:

  • There are discrepancies between the statements made by you and your sponsor in your application;
  • You, your sponsor or other immediate family member has, or has attempted to, deceive or mislead the Home Office in a previous application to enter the UK;
  • It has not been possible to verify the information you have provided.

Although the existence of any of the above reasons will not result in the automatic refusal of your application, it will be essential to address each of these circumstances in your application.

How much funds do I need to show for a UK Visitor Visa?

You must have access to sufficient resources to maintain yourself adequately for the duration of your visit to the UK. There is no set level of funds you need to show this.

Some thought should be given to the activities you intend to undertake, and your living expenses, in the UK. This is because, when assessing your application, a Caseworker will consider the likely cost of your stay and assess any source of revenue that will continue to be available to you whilst visiting the UK. A Caseworker will take into consideration your income or savings against any financial commitments you have in your country of residence in deciding whether you are able to support yourself financially during your visit.

What does it mean to make “frequent or successive visits” to the UK?

Although there is no specific maximum period of time which you can spend in the UK in any period, as long as each visit does not exceed 6 months, your application for a Standard Visitor Visa will be refused if a caseworker has reason to believe that you are living in the UK through frequent or successive visits. In assessing your application a Caseworker will consider your travel history including, how long you spend in the UK on each visit and how frequently you are returning to the UK.

How do I make an application for a UK Visitor Visa?

An application for a UK Visitor Visa must be made online . A Standard Visitor may apply for a visit visa of 6 months, 2.5 years or 10 years validity. This allows multiple visits to the UK within the period of validity, unless the visa is endorsed as single or dual-entry), but if it is a ‘multiple entry’ visa, you still cannot remain in the UK as a visitor for more than 6 months on any individual visit.

As part of the application process you will be required to attend a Visa Centre to enrol your biometrics and have your passport scanned as part of the application process. Once your application form is submitted online, you will be able to upload your supporting documents online and book an appointment to enrol your biometrics.

How much does it cost to make a UK Visit Visa application?

The Home Office application fee for a Standard Visitor Visa is £95. You may need to pay an additional fee for a biometric appointment at a Visa Centre.

How long will it take for my UK Visit Visa application to be decided?

An application for a UK Visitor Visa is typically decided within 3 weeks of making the application and attending a visa application centre. It may be possible to apply for a priority service to speed up the process depending on the country you are applying from. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there may be delays in processing your applications and priority services may be limited.

What happens if my application for a UK Visitor Visa is refused?

You are unlikely to have a right of appeal if your application for a Standard Visitor Visa is refused.  If you need to challenge a refusal, it is likely you will have to do so by way of judicial review.

You may wish to speak to our barristers for expert legal advice on making a fresh application following the refusal of your visitor visa. The term ‘UK visit visa’ is generally used in reference to what is now known as the Standard Visitor visa. It is the visa for those who wish to make temporary visits to the UK, rather than those who wish to move to and base themselves in the UK in the long term.

You may seek a Standard Visitor visa for the UK for any of a range of purposes, such as to visit as a tourist, for certain business activities, or for medical reasons; more of these are explained below.

As the Standard Visitor visa is only designed for short visits to the UK, there are certain things you are not permitted to do as a holder of this visa. These include:

  • Undertaking paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person
  • Living in the UK for long periods of time through frequent visits
  • Accessing public funds (benefits)
  • Partaking in a course of study that lasts more than six months
  • Marrying or registering a civil partnership, or giving notice of marriage or civil partnership. If this is what you would like to do on your visit to the UK, you can instead apply for a Marriage Visitor visa, which is outlined in greater detail below.

Request A Call Back

The Standard Visitor visa for the UK is effectively the replacement for the following visa routes:

  • The Family Visitor visa
  • The General Visitor visa
  • The Child Visitor visa
  • The Business Visitor visa, which was also aimed at academics, doctors and scientists
  • The Sports Visitor visa
  • The Entertainer Visitor visa
  • The Prospective Entrepreneur visa
  • The Private Medical Treatment Visitor visa
  • The Approved Destination Status (ADS) visa

Now, you can simply apply for the Standard Visitor visa if you wish to come to the UK for any of the following purposes:

  • For tourism – for instance, to go on a holiday or to visit friends or relatives
  • For certain business activities, such as attending a meeting
  • To undertake a short course of study
  • To partake in research or an exchange programme as an academic
  • For medical reasons, such as to receive private medical treatment

Another type of UK Visit visa to be aware of is the Marriage Visitor visa. This is the visa route you must apply for if:

  • You wish to get married or to register a civil partnership in the UK
  • You wish to give notice of a marriage or civil partnership in the UK
  • You don’t intend to stay or settle in the UK following your marriage or civil partnership
  • You satisfy the other eligibility requirements

It will not be necessary for you to apply for the Marriage Visitor visa if you simply wish to convert your civil partnership into a marriage – the Standard Visitor visa will be sufficient for this.

Nor will you need a Marriage Visitor visa if one of the below is true:

  • You have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • You have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme, and are still waiting for a decision
  • You’re an Irish citizen

In order to secure this visa, you must satisfy the Home Office’s relevant UK visitor visa requirements.

Applicants for the Standard Visitor visa need to show that:

  • They will leave the UK when their visit is over
  • They won’t live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, or make the UK their main home
  • They will be able to support themselves and their dependants during their time in the UK, or have funding from someone else to support them
  • They will be able to pay for their return or onward journey, or have funding from someone else to pay for their journey
  • They have proof of any business or other activities they wish to undertake in the UK, as permitted by the Home Office’s Visitor Rules

There are further requirements to which you will be subject as an applicant for the Standard Visitor visa, depending on whether you are applying:

  • To study for up to six months
  • As an academic
  • So that you can visit the UK for private medical treatment
  • As an organ donor, or
  • For a long-term Standard Visitor visa

For an in-depth discussion of the exact Home Office requirements that you will need to meet when applying for a UK visit visa, please feel free to arrange a consultation with our immigration experts, or call 0208 215 0053 today.

uk visit visa help

Those who successfully apply for a Standard Visitor visa for the UK can normally stay in the country on this visa for a maximum of six months.

However, it may be possible for you to remain in the UK on this visa for 11 months if you are coming to the UK for private medical treatment, or 12 months if you are an academic and satisfy the eligibility requirements.

If you opt for the long-term Standard Visitor visa – which is explained in greater detail below –this visa can last for two years, five years or even 10 years. However, this does not mean you can stay continuously in the UK for that period of time. This long-term visa is designed for those intending to regularly visit the UK over that period, with a maximum of six months’ stay allowed for each visit.

How much does it cost to apply for a UK Spouse Visa?

Provided that you are looking to stay in the UK for up to six months on a Standard Visitor visa, there will be a £95 application fee for this.

Ifyou are applying for a visa of up to 11 months that would enable you to come to the UK for private medical treatment, you will need to pay a £190 fee. This same fee also applies if you are an academic who meets the eligibility requirements, and you wish to come to the UK for up to 12 months with your spouse or partner and your children.

If, meanwhile, you are interested in applying for the long-term Standard Visitor visa, the fee will depend on the length of the visa:

  • If two years, £361
  • If five years, £655
  • If 10 years, £822

1. Will I lose my Visit Visa if I apply for another Visa?

Especially if you currently hold a long-term Standard Visitor visa that allows you to enter the UK multiple times over the course of the visa’s validity period, you may understandably wonder whether you are permitted to apply for a new visa under a different category – and if so, what would happen to your existing Visit visa.

As an existing holder of a Visit visa, it is not possible for you to apply to switch directly from this visa to any other type of visa for the UK. This is because the UK Visit visa is designed for those who wish to come to the UK only temporarily as visitors, rather than those who wish to move permanently to the UK.

It is also important to bear in mind that if a UK visit visa could be easily converted into a longer-term visa, it is likely that many unscrupulous people would seek to abuse this. The UK Government therefore attempts to prevent people from doing so.

If you do wish to replace your visit visa with another type of visa for the UK , our UK visit visa solicitors would therefore probably advise you to leave the UK first, before applying for the new visa from your country of origin.

2. Can I apply for a Multiple Visit Visa?

If you wish to make regular visits to the UK over an extended period, it is possible to apply for a long-term Standard Visitor visa that lasts for two, five or 10 years. As a holder of this visa, you will be permitted to stay for up to six months on each visit to the UK.

If you are under 18 years old at the time of your application for a long-term Standard Visitor visa, your visa will only be valid for a maximum of six months after you turn 18. You will not be able to get a refund on the fee.

3. Can I switch from a Visit Visa to another Visa from within the UK?

It is unfortunately not possible to switch from a Standard Visitor visa to another type of visa from within the UK. You might have the option of extending your visa, but you will only be able to do this for specific reasons – for instance, because of a need for further private medical treatment.

Even if you are able to extend your stay, if you are on the usual (not the long-term) Standard Visitor visa, you will normally only be able to do so as long as the total time you remain in the UK as a visitor is no more than six months. This would mean that if, for example, you have spent three months in the UK as a visitor, you can apply to extend your stay for another three months.

Holders of the Standard Visitor visa can only apply to extend their stay in the UK as a visitor for more than six months if they are:

  • A patient receiving medical treatment
  • An academic who still meets the eligibility requirements
  • A graduate undertaking a clinical attachment or retaking the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test

If, meanwhile, you hold a long-term multiple-entry visa and you wish to stay in the UK beyond your current visa expiry date, you will be able to apply to extend your permission for up to the maximum six months allowed for visitors (standard). So if, for instance, you come to the UK as a visitor in January, and your long-term visit visa is set to expire in February, you will be permitted to extend for up to six months, or until as late as June, as a visitor (standard).

4. What is the maximum amount of time I can stay in the UK under a Visit Visa?

There are various reasons why the Home Office might refuse your application for a UK Visit visa. For some unsuccessful applicants, there may be just one reason for the rejection of their visa application, while for others, multiple reasons for the refusal might apply.

Applications for a Visit visa for the UK may be refused due to the candidate failing to satisfy all the general suitability requirements and specific eligibility requirements. Sometimes, the problem may be that the applicant has not provided enough evidence to meet a particular requirement. Alternatively, the applicant may have an adverse immigration history, or serious or recent criminal convictions.

Whatever the reasons might be for your Visit visa application having been refused, our immigration specialists can advise and guide you through your options. Those options are likely to be:

  • Re-applying for the Visit visa;
  • Appealing the decision on human rights grounds; or
  • Applying for a judicial review of the decision.

Whichever course of action you take, it is crucial to be well-informed and prepared, to help maximise the likelihood of a positive outcome. Please feel free to contact our UK Visit visa lawyers today for advice on a way forward that is tailored to your case and circumstances; you can call us on 0208 215 0053 .

Getting an online immigration status (eVisa)

This advice applies to England. See advice for See advice for Northern Ireland , See advice for Scotland , See advice for Wales

You should check if you can get online evidence of your immigration status - also called an ‘eVisa’.

Most physical immigration documents are being replaced by eVisas. This includes:

biometric residence permits (BRPs)

biometric residence cards (BRCs)

stamps in passports

'vignette' stickers in passports

Getting an eVisa is free and won’t change your permission to live in the UK.

You’ll need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account before the end of 2024 to access your eVisa.

If your biometric residence permit expires on 31 December 2024

Most biometric residence permits (BRPs) have an expiry date of 31 December 2024 - because eVisas are replacing BRPs. This doesn’t mean your visa ends on this date.

The Home Office will ask you to create an account for your eVisa before your BRP expires.

If you’re not sure when your visa ends, you can check the letter you got from the Home Office when they approved your application.

If you still can't find when your visa ends, talk to an adviser .

Video from the Home Office - what is an eVisa?

When you'll get an online immigration status

When you'll get an eVisa depends on your situation.

If you're applying for a visa or indefinite leave

The Home Office will ask you to create a UKVI account for your eVisa if you’re applying for:

a visa - unless you're visiting the UK for less than 6 months

indefinite leave to remain

You might need to create your online account during or after the application process. It depends what kind of visa you’re applying for.

If your application for a visa or indefinite leave is approved, you’ll get a temporary biometric residence permit (BRP) as well as an eVisa. The BRP will expire at the end of 2024. This doesn’t mean your visa ends on this date.

Later in 2024, the Home Office will stop issuing temporary BRPs and you’ll only get an eVisa.

If you already have a visa or indefinite leave

The Home Office will contact you during 2024 to ask you to create a UKVI account for your eVisa if you have:

a visa - unless you’re visiting the UK for less than 6 months

indefinite leave to remain (ILR)

Make sure the Home Office has your correct email and postal address so they can reach you. To update your contact details, you can fill in a change of circumstances form on GOV.UK .

If the Home Office can’t contact you, you can still create a UKVI account later in 2024.

If your visa ends in 2024

You’ll get an eVisa if you apply to extend your visa or get indefinite leave.

If you have ILR and you don’t have a BRP

If your have an ILR stamp in your passport, you’ll need to get an eVisa before your passport expires.

You can apply for a free BRP. This will make it easier for you to set up a UKVI account when the Home Office contact you. You can apply for a BRP on GOV.UK .

If you have pre-settled or settled status

If you get pre-settled or settled status through the EU Settlement scheme, you’ll get an eVisa.

If you’re not an EU Citizen, you’ll get a physical immigration document - but these will also be replaced by eVisas.

You can check how to view and prove your pre-settled or settled status .

If you already have an online account

You don’t need to create a UKVI account if you already have one. You might already have one if you’ve applied for:

pre-settled or settled status from the EU Settlement Scheme

a student visa

a British National (Overseas) visa - and you’re from Hong Kong

If you can’t access your account

You can get help to recover it. You’ll need to have access to the phone number and email address used to create your account. Check how to recover your UKVI account on GOV.UK .

Creating an online account

You’ll need to create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to get an online immigration status.

You’ll be able to use your UKVI account to:

view and prove your online status

check what rights you have in the UK

update your personal details - like your contact information

How to create a UKVI account

The Home Office will send you a link to create your online account. You’ll also need to download an app called ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ to verify your ID.

To create your account, you’ll need:

access to an email address

an identity document - for example, your passport or current BRP

your current BRP number - if you already have a visa

your application number - if you’re applying for a new visa

a smart phone to download the ID verification app

You can check how to download the UK Immigration: ID Check app on GOV.UK .

If you’ve already proved your identity at a Visa Application Centre or Service Support Centre, you still need to create a UKVI account.

If you need help creating an account

You can ask someone you trust - like a friend or family member.

If you can’t manage your own account, you can add someone to your account who can do it for you - known as a ‘proxy’. For example, you might need a proxy if you’re a child or you have a disability that means you can’t do it yourself.

If you still need help creating a UKVI account, talk to an adviser .

If you need help using a computer or mobile device

You can get help from the Home Office’s assisted digital service if you either:

aren’t confident using a mobile device or computer

don’t have access to a mobile device or computer

don’t have internet access

The service is provided by We Are Group.

They can help you over the phone. You might be able to visit someone or they might be able to visit you at home - this will depend on where you live.  Find out more about how to get help from We Are Group  on GOV.UK.

You can get a share code on GOV.UK .

This code is only valid for 90 days - if it isn’t used within the 90 days you’ll need to get a new one.

Proving your right to enter the UK

You still need to show your physical immigration documents when you travel - for example, your BRP or stamp in your passport.

Before the end of 2024, you’ll be able to use your eVisa to enter the UK instead of your physical document.

You can check the rules for entering the UK on GOV.UK .

Updating your UKVI account

Make sure you keep your account up to date.

If you don't keep your account details up to date, you might not be allowed to enter the UK.

You’ll need to update your UKVI account if:

you renew or replace the identity document you used to apply - for example, if your passport expires

you change your name - for example, if you get married

you change your address, phone number or email address - your contact details need to be up to date so you can view or share your status

you want to change your identity document or add another one

You can add or change your identity document using your UKVI account. You might be asked to send your passport or national identity card to the Home Office.

It will be a number of weeks before you can log in with your new identity document details - make sure you keep the details of your old one until then.

When you add a new identity document to your account, you’ll need to sign in using that identity document in the future.

Don’t worry if you can’t see your old identity document on your account. It’s still there, but the system might only show the most recent one you’ve added.

You can update your details in your UKVI account on GOV.UK .

If you don’t get confirmation after you've updated your account, or you’ve been waiting longer than 4 weeks, contact the UK Visas and Immigration contact centre .

If you have problems with your eVisa

If you create a UKVI account before the Home Office contacts you, you won’t be able to see your eVisa in your account.

Endorsing bodies of the Global Talent visa

To be considered for entry under the Global Talent visa, applicants must normally* seek endorsement from one of six endorsing bodies engaged by the Home Office.

The research and technology Global Talent visa endorsing bodies are the British Academy , the Royal Academy of Engineering , the Royal Society , Tech Nation , and UK Research and Innovation . These endorsing bodies will make an endorsement decision based on the evidence you provide.

There are three routes to fast-track a science endorsement:

  • if you have accepted an eligible position at an approved UK higher education institution or research institute with responsibility either for academic, research or innovation leadership and development, or for directing or leading an individual or team research or innovation project or programme of work
  • holders of certain individual fellowships
  • research leaders and team members working on a research grant from an endorsed funder approved by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) .

If you do not have any of the above, you can also apply by having your application peer reviewed.

Hoping you can help.

Just wanted to confirm if me and my family will require a visa for the stop over in Germany as we will not be planning to go out into Germany only catch a connecting flight from the airport.

Unfortunately the airline and travel agent cannot give me this information?

Two questions in order to answer. What is your nationality? Is it a single ticket or do you have two tickets and doing a self-transfer?

uk visit visa help

"if me and my family will require a visa for the stop over in Germany"

Well, maybe you should then tell what passport your family is traveling on. That would help.

Here is a link to check if you need an airport transit visa: https://uk.diplo.de/uk-en/02/visa/airport-transit-visas/2442170#:~:text=If%20during%20transit%20through%20a,may%20require%20a%20C%20visa.

Without providing the answers to the question asked in post 1, nobody can answer.

Apologies for not being clear. We all have British passports.

Departing flight is from London to Tunis Carthrage Airport with a 1.5 hour stop over in Frankfurt

Return flight is from Tunis Carthage Airport to London, but this time the stop over is in Munich Airport for round about 2 hours.

With UK passports, you don't need visas for Germany (which is a EU country, part of Schengen). However, I have to assume you have asked because you don't actually have a 'stopover' (your words, not sure what you think you mean by that) but totally separate tickets? If so, your time allowed for a 'self connection' is tight at Frankfurt, less of an issue at Munich, simply because one airport is huge and complicated, the other small and I find more efficient.

I have checked my booking and can see that flight numbers are different when I get connection flights from German airports. Luckily we have no check in luggage so dont have to worry about waiting for luggage. As soon as we land particularly at Frankfurt will ensure we go straight to boarding gate for Lufthansa Airline flight to Tunis Carthage Airport.

Thanks a million

If so you have a protected connection and could check bags if you wanted.

If you have separate bookings (2 separate return tickets) that is a worry. I doubt you have but check the LH site.

If these are separate bookings and the first flight is delayed and you miss the second, you los that and the first flight back home.

Hopefully you have booked a protected connection despite using a dubious OTA

uk visit visa help

Travelup are not a dubious OTA. In what way are they dubious? Is it their technology? That’s mostly what counts. They’re a fully licensed IATA travel agent based in Reading.

And travel agents & airlines do not give out info on visa & other travel document requirements for travellers.

And of course the booking made by Travelup can be found on the airline website. Why? Because they use a res system to book with which is linked directly to the airline , so you get an airline PNR reference as well as the GDS PNR ref.

If the subject isn’t understood, it’s not nice to make a poster worried for nothing.

Full service travel agents certainly do offer advice on visa, and they know where to find the official websites and will provide that info to their customers, either proactively or on request. In some circs, like for travel to say China or Russia, they even get the physical visas for you - probably for a fee, though.

And even your post, fru, allows for the fact that while Travelup might not always provide a single ticket.

And yes, checked bags would not be an issue if you change your mind, you won't see them until you arrive in Tunisia on the outward journey, and back home on the return journey.

How to apply

Generally, you must apply for a study permit before you come to Canada . Some people can apply for a study permit from within Canada. In some cases, you can apply when you arrive in Canada at the port of entry. Make sure you understand which option is available to you.

Get your documents ready

When you apply, you should submit

  • the  letter of acceptance from the  designated learning institution (DLI) you’ll be attending
  • You can upload your PAL into the Provincial attestation letter (required) field in your application. If this option is missing, you must upload your PAL to the Client information field. If you meet an exception, you must provide any evidence in the Client information field.
  • We won’t be able to finalize your study permit until you’ve submitted a complete application.
  • Waiting to submit documents will cause delays in processing.

Apply online

If you’re applying for a study permit, you must apply online , whether you’re outside of Canada or already in Canada.

You’re only eligible to apply on paper if you

  • have a disability that prevents you from applying online
  • hold an identity or travel document for non-national residents, refugees or stateless persons

Problem with the online application

You may not be able to apply for your study permit online. For example, if you currently have visitor status in Canada and your spouse or common-law partner is a NOC C or D worker, you may need to submit your application on paper.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the biometrics fee when you submit your application. Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done as soon as you get the letter from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have 30 days to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and where to give your biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application .

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

You can also be inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.

Find out more about inadmissibility .

Biometrics fee

  • Individual applicant: CAD $85
  • Families applying at the same time : maximum total fee of CAD $170
  • Groups of 3 or more performing artists and their staff who apply for work permits at the same time: maximum total fee of $CAD 255

Venezuelan passport holders

You may need to complete extra steps when you fill out your application .

If the printed expiry date on your Venezuelan passport has passed

If the printed expiry date has passed and you’re applying for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit or to extend your stay as a temporary resident in Canada, follow these steps:

  • Add 5 years to the printed expiry date shown on your passport and enter it in the expiry date field of the application form.
  • Include a letter of explanation with your application stating: “I am a Venezuelan national with a Venezuelan passport, which has been extended for 5 years”.

Warning: If your passport is still expired after adding 5 years to the printed expiry date, your passport is considered expired. You’re not eligible to submit an application with that passport.
