Are there any tickets left?

There are still some tickets going on Ticketmaster , and some for as little at £23.80. They do have a restricted view, mind.

What’s the London stadium bag policy?

Bags are allowed but the venue has requested fans not to bring them if possible to help avoid delays. All small bags will be subject to searches and large bags won't be permitted.

Explainer: How West Ham’s football stadium became a ballpark in 18 days

LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 15: Preparations are made ahead of the MLB World Tour: London Series 2023 between St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, taking place on June 24-25, at London Stadium on June 15, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Alex Morton/Getty Images for MLB Europe)

Major League Baseball returns to the UK this weekend for a third time in six years, and West Ham United’s London Stadium has been transformed into a baseball field for the third time.

This year, the stadium that was the main home of the 2012 Summer Olympics will host the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies for games on Saturday and Sunday, with West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen making way for the Phillies’ Bryce Harper and the Mets’ Pete Alonso , plus more of MLB ’s top talent.

But hang on, isn’t a baseball field a different shape to a football pitch? How do they make that work?

Allow The Athletic to explain — or rather, ask Murray Cook, an expert in that area, to explain…

How long did it take?

“From start to finish, it took 18 days to build this,” says Cook, MLB’s field consultant.

“This” is the third time he has helped prepare the London Stadium for the London Series. The other two series at the stadium were the New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox in 2019 and the St Louis Cardinals versus the Chicago Cubs last summer — the latter was meant to take place in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It took us 21 days in 2019 and 18 last year,” says Cook. “We never try and set a record but this was a big team effort.”

⚽️ Football ➡️ Baseball ⚾️ The London Stadium is #LondonSeries ready @MLB | @Mets | @Phillies pic.twitter.com/pgYLsxPrUJ — MLB Europe (@MLBEurope) June 5, 2024

Why the London Stadium?

“We started this process back in 2014, in terms of looking at how we could do it in London,” says Cook. “Over the years, we continued to look and figured out by 2019 we had a shot at making it work.

“We created a team, mostly with help from the UK and Europe; people like myself from the U.S. help create a strategy, although it was in a very short window. We looked at different places and felt the London Stadium was the right fit.”

It took so long for MLB to work out whether it could stage regular-season games in European football or rugby stadiums because of the difficulty of converting the rectangular pitches used for those sports into a playable triangular baseball field. Most football/rugby pitches just didn’t have enough width to fit all the necessary components.

The London Stadium, however, had the benefit of having been originally designed with extra space to accommodate track and field events. After making changes to the seating layout, Cook was able to make it fit.

So how do they do it?

Then came the hardest part: building the field itself. After West Ham’s final home match of the season on May 11, the grass was stripped, then it’s a case of laying down everything a baseball game will need. “There’s 345 tons of infield clay,” says Cook. “Then you have to sort out the turf, the netting, padding, dugouts, but what is great about it is most of the stuff we used last year, we were able to use this year.”

weeknd tour london stadium

The turf had been tested, ensuring an appropriate bounce and checking how the spikes on the players’ footwear fit into it, as well as looking at drainage. “We want to make sure the field is safe, which it has been previously. We want it to be as consistent, reliable and enjoyable as possible for the players like a baseball field.”

He adds: “For us, the key part of the job is using the drag to groom the clay. There are a lot of similarities between this and the maintenance of a cricket pitch. That is our cricket ‘wicket’ area, because 70 percent of a baseball game is played in that area. It rains a lot here, so dealing with the weather can be challenging due to the clay. We sometimes have to put out covers to protect it.”

What can the MLB novice expect?

The Mets and the Phillies is one of Major League Baseball’s biggest rivalries — the Battle of the Broads — so expect some fan rivalry.

Meanwhile, a connection with British football comes via Rob McElhenney, famous for “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” as well as for co-owning League One side Wrexham, who are stars of the Emmy-winning documentary series Welcome To Wrexham . McElhenney is a hardcore Phillies fan, and will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch on Sunday. Fellow actor Matthew Broderick is a Mets fan and will do the honors on Saturday.

'Wrexham has been one of the great joys of my life' - Rob McElhenney interview

Alonso is one of the key players for the Mets, while Phillies hitter Harper is widely considered one of the best baseball players in the world, so spectators are seeing the sport’s top talents. The Phillies had a team event on Thursday night at the Tower of London. Their manager Rob Thomson and his coaches visited the Philly-themed bar Passyunk Avenue in London’s Waterloo district, helping promote the sport on this side of the Atlantic.

“We have a lot of Philly fans here, but it was great walking around (London’s Borough) Market and not being recognised,” said Harper. “Football, I don’t want to say ‘soccer,’ what an incredible sport, and my wife grew up playing it. I enjoy watching the Premier League and I love Jack Grealish’s hair. He has a really good mop.

weeknd tour london stadium

“In terms of the popularity of the game, it’s great being here in London. But as much as we want to put baseball in people’s faces, fans are going to have to want to watch us play.

“We’re aware there’s other sports, like NFL and basketball, that people enjoy more than baseball. As baseball grows, the more we go into different countries, hopefully it will continue to grow.”

Finally, after converting West Ham’s pitch, is Cook converted to the team?

“Through doing this, I’ve been to a few West Ham games and I have a soft spot for the team,” says Cook.

But mostly it’s about professional pride. “I’ll watch a game and think, ‘We converted that pitch.’ The most satisfying part of the job is seeing the players happy with the surface and watching the fans be all excited and embracing the sport. That’s what makes it special to be involved in all of this.”

He adds: “It’s a great venue, so you look at what you can do to enhance the experience for baseball fans. We clean it off for James Williams (West Ham’s head groundsman) and the boys (on his staff), and then they take it from there and get it ready for the Foo Fighters concert in the next few weeks.”

The Phillies and Mets are playing in the 2024 MLB London Series. Here's what to know.

P HILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets are taking their rivalry across the pond to London Stadium , the home of West Ham United of the Premier League, in England for a two-game series this weekend.

Philadelphia and New York enter the weekend matchup headed in two different directions. The Phils have the National League's best record , while the Mets are spiraling down the National League East standings.

The Phillies and Mets have faced each other four times already, with Philadelphia winning three out of four in May.

Here is what you need to know about the MLB World Tour 's 2024 London Series.

What time do the Phillies vs. Mets play?

The Phillies and Mets will play a two-game series at London Stadium on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9. The teams will split being the home team, with Saturday a home game for New York and Sunday for Philly.

London is five hours ahead of Philadelphia and New York, so consider the start times for both games.

If you're staying home, the first pitch for the Saturday game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET. If you're going to London, the game will begin at 6:10 p.m. BST — gates open at 3 p.m. BST.

Sunday's game will begin at 10:10 a.m. ET in Philadelphia and New York and 3:10 p.m. BST in London — gates open at noon BST.

How to watch the 2024 MLB London Series

MLB announced  in December that FOX and ESPN would have the 2024 London Series games. FOX will carry Saturday's game and ESPN will air Sunday's matchup.

Phillies fans can also listen to the game on SportsRadio 94WIP and WTTM 1680.

Mets fans can listen on WCBS 880 or WINS 92.3 FM HD2.

How to buy tickets for the London Series

If you're headed to London but still don't have tickets, don't worry. Tickets are still available for both games on Ticketmaster.

Tickets for Saturday's game can be purchased here , and tickets for Sunday's game can be bought here . MLB is also offering fan experience ticket packages , starting at $785.

Fans can also buy tickets on third-party websites such as StubHub and VividSeats . At last check, it does not appear tickets are being sold on SeatGeek, the official fan ticket marketplace  of MLB.

If you want to head to London for the series but haven't bought plane tickets yet, be prepared to pay. A Google search  showed flights departing from Philadelphia International Airport on June 7 and returning on June 10 cost over $800 — it's cheaper to  fly out of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

How to get London Series merch

Fans seeking London Series merchandise can buy online  or at the Phillies ' or Mets ' team stores.

The teams are selling MLB World Tour and London Series T-shirts, hoodies, hats, jerseys, posters, koozies and pennant flags. The Mets' website lists a London Series baseball  signed by Jeff McNeil.

London Series merch is also available to buy online at Fanatics.

What to do if you're going to London

If you're traveling to London for the games, there will be plenty to do.

MLB will have a free fan festival at Trafalgar Square  from June 7-9. The festival will include music, merch, batting cages, and a chance for fans from the United Kingdom, Philly, and New York to enjoy baseball and London.

On Friday, June 7, Phillies legend Chase Utley (who said in 2019 he hates the Mets ) and former Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy will participate in a home run derby, and there will be a London Series Pub Quiz afterward.

Fans can also watch both games during the Trafalgar Square Takeover.

The Phanatic has already been through the area in London, walking across The Mall near Buckingham Palace and the Victoria Memorial – while dressed as a Buckingham Palace guard.

Phillies fans can also head to Philadelphia-inspired bar  Passyunk Avenue  in London. The popular bar will have a tailgate, bus tours and other fun events for Philly fans headed to England. More information is available on their website .

Fans can also follow " UK Phillies " on social media. The fan account is run by London native Dave Shaw, who became a Phillies fan in 2012 after attending a game in Philadelphia on the final leg of his backpacking trip across the United States.

"There are a lot of Philly fans based in the U.K. and Europe who are just as hearty as me," Shaw said on a " Gallen of Questions ."

Where to watch if you're staying home in Philadelphia

Not everyone can afford a trip to London, but there are plenty of places in Philly to watch the Phils face the Mets this weekend.

McGillin's Olde Ale House in Center City will host a London watch party on Saturday and launch a Doyle $1 dog day to honor John Doyle . McGillin's will have drink specials and serve its "Phillies-tini."

Founding Fathers on South Street is another place to watch the games — the sports bar serves brunch at 10:30 a.m.

Fans can also head to Xfinity Live! , which will open early at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the Kenny Chesney concert  and Sunday for the Phillies-Mets' 10:10 am. ET start.

LONDON -- The London Series is now officially in full swing.

In front of 53,882 fans, the Phillies had 11 hits, including three home runs, to win the first game of the series, 7-2 , over the Mets on a crisp Saturday evening at London Stadium.

“I think it was great. There were [nearly 54,000 fans], which obviously speaks volumes to the support out there and how great a job MLB has done in creating these tours,” Mets center fielder Harrison Bader said. “I think they're a lot of fun to play in, but even more so for the fans -- they're really important for the fans. So it's just been a great experience so far.”

The energy from the fans was contagious, and Bryce Harper’s soccer slide celebration added to it. Following Harper’s game-tying dinger in the fourth inning, the Phillies rallied for five more runs in the inning, complete with a three-run homer by Whit Merrfield.

“It was fun, being able to put people on their feet and put joy in people,” Harper said. “That's what it's all about. Being able to do that today was a lot of fun.”

Game 1 of the series was an exhibition of what America’s favorite pastime is all about: having fun and hearing the connection between bat and ball. There is one more game to be played Sunday.

Here’s a primer about Game 2 between the Phillies and Mets:

What is the London Series?

The London Series is part of the MLB World Tour , which was created to bring Major League teams and players to a global fanbase. It is the league’s and the MLBPA’s largest international plan, formed with the intention of playing as many as 24 regular-season games and as many as 16 exhibition games in Asia, Europe, Mexico and Latin America through the 2026 season.

When is the game and how can I watch it?

First pitch for Game 2 is slated for 10:10 a.m. ET on Sunday and will air on ESPN. It can also be watched on MLB.TV .

Where is the game being played?

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is a sporting complex that was initially built for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The complex includes what is now known as London Stadium, a multi-use facility that hosts concerts and sporting events. Currently the home of West Ham United FC of England’s Premier League, London Stadium has been reconfigured to host this weekend’s baseball games.

Who are the starting pitchers?

Mets: LHP Jose Quintana (1-5, 5.17)

The Mets’ most consistent starter in the second half last season, the 35-year-old veteran Quintana has struggled to find that same level of consistency so far this year. One of his best starts came last month in Philadelphia, where Quintana held the Phillies to two runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Phillies: RHP Taijuan Walker (3-1, 5.73 ERA)

Walker started the season on the injured list because of an impingement in his right shoulder. He hasn’t hit his stride, which has Phillies fans wondering if right-hander Spencer Turnbull could rejoin the rotation at some point. Walker’s best pitch is his splitter, but he hasn’t been throwing it effectively this season. He promised to throw a bunch on Sunday in an effort to keep the ball on the ground.

What might the starting lineups look like?

Mets: The team will tweak its lineup with the right-handed Walker on the mound for the Phillies, giving second baseman Jeff McNeil his first chance to start since last weekend. The lineup should look something like this:

1. Francisco Lindor , SS 2. Pete Alonso , 1B 3. Brandon Nimmo , CF 4. J.D. Martinez , DH 5. Starling Marte , RF 6. Brett Baty , 3B 7. Jeff McNeil , 2B 8. Harrison Bader , CF 9. Tomás Nido , C

Phillies: Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Johan Rojas will start in center field on Sunday, after Cristian Pache started there Saturday.

1. Kyle Schwarber , DH 2. J.T. Realmuto , C 3. Bryce Harper , 1B 4. Alec Bohm , 3B 5. Nick Castellanos , RF 6. Bryson Stott , 2B 7. Edmundo Sosa , SS 8. Whit Merrifield , LF 9. Johan Rojas , CF

How will the bullpens line up after the starter?

Mets: Although the Mets used five relievers Saturday, including long man Adrian Houser for 2 2/3 innings, they’re still in fine shape given two off-days before this series. Reed Garrett, Drew Smith and Dedniel Núñez are all operating on four-plus days of rest, and only Houser is likely to be unavailable given Saturday’s workloads.

Phillies: The Phillies’ bullpen should be in good shape on Sunday. Orion Kerkering pitched 1 1/3 innings Saturday, and Seranthony Domínguez pitched one inning. But high-leverage relievers José Alvarado, Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm remained rested and ready.

Any injuries of note?

Mets: The Mets have dealt with significant injuries throughout the first two-plus months of the season. Currently, they’re missing All-Star closer Edwin Díaz, who didn’t make the trip due to a right shoulder impingement. He should be back next week. Starting catcher Francisco Alvarez is also out recovering from left thumb surgery and could return within the next week. Ace pitcher Kodai Senga has missed the entire campaign to date due to a shoulder capsule strain, and the Mets’ top left-handed reliever, Brooks Raley, is done for the year after undergoing elbow surgery.

Phillies: Shortstop Trea Turner has missed more than a month because of a strained left hamstring. He is moving closer to a return, but it won’t happen until the Phillies are home from London. Outfielder Brandon Marsh (strained right hamstring) and utility player Kody Clemens (back spasms) are also on the injured list.

Who is hot and who is not?

Mets: No Met is hotter than Lindor, who entered Saturday’s play with a 1.000 OPS over his previous 15 games before doubling in his first at-bat and scoring. On the other side of things is Baty, whom the Mets demoted to Triple-A Syracuse last week but brought back for the London Series as their 27th man. Before going to the Minors, Baty was in a 6-for-47 (.128) slump with 19 strikeouts.

Phillies: Harper fell a triple short of the cycle on Saturday. He doubled in the first inning, homered in the fourth and singled in the fifth. He has hit 15 homers this season, which is tied for second in the National League with Shohei Ohtani. … Castellanos hit a towering homer to left in the eighth inning Saturday. He entered the game batting .333 with two homers and a 1.083 OPS in his past seven games.

Is there anything else fans should know?

McNeil, who has been out of the starting lineup for four consecutive games, will return Sunday against Walker. Since Jose Iglesias arrived from Triple-A on May 31, the Mets have utilized a traditional platoon at second base, with McNeil starting against right-handed pitchers and Iglesias facing lefties. The problem, for McNeil, is that Walker will be just the third right-handed starter they’ve seen in eight days. As a result, he has amassed only a handful of at-bats since Iglesias arrived on the scene.

Weekend fantasy baseball: Mets-Phillies in MLB London Series

Baseball returns to London this weekend with National League East rivals, the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies , playing games at London Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. Each team will serve as the designated "home" team for one game.

Still, this puts each team at a disadvantage in terms of volume, as the other 28 teams are scheduled to play three times during the weekend, though as London Stadium's park factor leans noticeably hitter-friendly, there's a chance that both Mets and Phillies hitters can deliver competitive levels of production for their fantasy managers . Last year, in the two games played in London Stadium in June, the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals combined for 22 runs and three home runs.

What can we expect from this installment of the MLB World Tour, as well as from al the other series back in the States? Our analysts, Tristan H. Cockcroft and Eric Karabell, have the scoop on the weekend.

From a hitting standpoint, what matters here is that the Phillies are a very good offense (as I spare Eric the need for any claims of homerism), ranking third in runs per game (5.08), fifth in wOBA (.320), third in walk rate (9.7%) and sixth in Statcast hard-hit rate (41.0%). Good hitters should stay good in a good park for hitting.

I'm not even worried about the fact that many of the Phillies' most prominent star hitters are left-handed, with the Mets scheduled to start lefties Sean Manaea and Jose Quintana , because -- gasp -- the Phillies have actually hit lefties (.328 wOBA) better than righties (.316), though they do strike out more often against them (+3.3%). I'd load up on Phillies, especially in our standard (daily) format, including their most successful guy against lefties, Edmundo Sosa (.326/.408/.721).

Here's where I'm struggling, though, just as I do when seeking a good fish and chips on this side of the Atlantic: Is Ranger Suarez , fantasy's top-scoring pitcher, still a must-start for these games? I lean yes, but I'm torn.

The other big series of the weekend is one close to your heart, as the Yankees host the Los Angeles Dodgers . These are presumed to be the best teams in baseball (along with the Phillies), and it will be a good test for several starting pitchers, including Gavin Stone versus Nestor Cortes on Saturday, and aces Tyler Glasnow against Luis Gil in the Sunday night ESPN tilt . Yes, Gil is an ace. He has won seven consecutive starts and permitted only three earned runs in those 44⅔ innings (an 0.60 ERA!). I presume that even against the Dodgers, you have confidence this weekend in Gil, as well as in Cortes, with his flashy 1.12 ERA at home!

Cortes' home/road splits are a head-scratcher to me and are as significant as I can recall since perhaps Wandy Rodriguez's prime (drop, drop, drop beneath the Wandy Line !). Yes, he's above the line for this one.

The Boston Red Sox -- yes, believe it or not, I'm talking Red Sox! -- catch my eye for their four-game visit to Guaranteed Rate Field, what with the hosting Chicago White Sox running ice cold again (13 consecutive losses, entering their series opener on Thursday). The Red Sox have had a ton of bad luck when it comes to injuries, from Trevor Story to Triston Casas to Garrett Whitlock to now Wilyer Abreu (among others). Plus, pushing Kutter Crawford off that soft Sunday matchup is a signal that they're already worried about rotation fatigue. It makes sense, considering they ended April with a (by far) MLB best 2.59 team ERA, but have only a 19th-ranked 4.09 number since.

Friday's matchup against Garrett Crochet will prove a tough one for the Red Sox, but they otherwise face three amazing matchups out of four, meaning it's a key time for guys like Jarren Duran , Kenley Jansen , Tyler O'Neill and Connor Wong , all of whom have seen their roster rates plummet in recent days. Brayan Bello , available in more than 70% of ESPN leagues, is a standout streamer on Saturday.

Other hitters to watch this weekend include Giants OF Heliot Ramos , who reached base six times in Wednesday's game and faces the Rangers, Athletics OF Miguel Andujar (against the Blue Jays), who feels like a trap pickup because he is "all or nothing" at the plate. Also, there's Orioles rookie 2B/OF Connor Norby , who may not make the lineup as the team faces three Rays right-handers. That would be a shame. Norby can hit right-handed pitching, but he may not be in the majors for long. By the way, how is Cardinals 2B Nolan Gorman (14 homers!) still rostered in under 30% of ESPN standard leagues?

On the pitching side, I'll also recommend Lance Lynn , who has pitched effectively enough this year for streaming purposes and now gets the Colorado Rockies , one of the game's most strikeout-prone offenses, at Busch Stadium.
