Why Do Lion Not Attack When you Are In Safari Vehicle?

Lions generally do not attack people in safari vehicles for a few reasons:

It is crucial, however, for visitors on safari to follow the rules and guidelines provided by their guides to ensure safety for both the tourists and the animals.

  • Perception of the Vehicle as a Single Entity : Lions, like many wild animals , perceive a safari vehicle as a single, large entity rather than a collection of smaller parts (including people). This perception doesn’t trigger their predatory instincts as the vehicle does not resemble their natural prey.
  • Lack of Threat : In the wild, lions are more likely to attack if they feel threatened. People in safari vehicles typically keep a respectful distance and do not act in a manner that the lions perceive as threatening.
  • Habituation : Lions in areas frequently visited by safari tours become habituated to the presence of vehicles. Over time, they learn that these vehicles neither pose a threat nor offer an opportunity as prey. This habituation reduces the likelihood of an attack.
  • No Provocation : Tourists are usually instructed not to make sudden movements or loud noises that might provoke or startle the lions. Staying still and quiet makes the lions less likely to view people as a threat or potential prey.
  • Conservation and Protection Efforts : In many safari areas, conservation efforts have led to a situation where lions are not desperate for food due to healthy ecosystems, and they are not generally threatened by human activity, which reduces potential conflict.

Lion Population in 2024

It’s important to note that the lion population has experienced a significant decline over the years. In the early 20th century, there were estimated to be as many as 300,000 lions in the wild. However, due to various factors such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and disease, the population has decreased substantially.

Tanzania holds the highest number of wild lions, with approximately 14,500 individuals, followed by South Africa with around 3,284 lions. Other countries with significant lion populations include Botswana (3,063), Kenya (2,515), and Zambia (2,349). In total, African lions are present in around 25 countries, but many of these nations have fewer than 250 individuals.

As of 2024, the global population of lions is estimated to be between 19,000 and 40,000 individuals, with a tendency towards the lower end of this range. The largest populations are primarily found in Africa, with a small population in the Gir Forest of India.

What are lions known for?

Lions are known for their powerful build, majestic mane (in males), and social behavior. They are apex predators and are often referred to as the “king of the jungle,” even though they primarily inhabit savannas and grasslands.

What threats do lions face?

Lions face several threats, including habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. They are also vulnerable to diseases such as canine distemper. Conservation efforts are critical to protect lion populations.

<p>While many domestic cats might shy away from water, several larger feline species, including lions, do not have an inherent aversion to it. In fact, lions in the wild have been known to enter water bodies, primarily for hunting or crossing purposes. What is the conservation status of lions?

Lions are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their populations have declined significantly over the past few decades due to various threats. Conservation programs focus on habitat preservation, anti-poaching measures, and conflict mitigation to protect these majestic animals.

More like this:

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) currently classifies the African Lion as Vulnerable, with a high risk of becoming Endangered if current trends are not reversed. The principal causes for the decline have been identified as indiscriminate retaliatory killing in defense of human life and livestock, habitat loss, and prey base depletion.

Conservation efforts are in place to try to reverse this decline, which include establishing protected areas, anti-poaching initiatives, and community-based conservation programs. Despite these efforts, the lion population continues to face challenges, and three-quarters of their population is in decline.

Best places to see wild lions in Africa

Lions

Aptly named the ‘King of Beasts’, lions are an iconic African wildlife species and are often high up on many travellers’ list of things to see when visiting Africa.

However, despite their popularity with tourists, they are not as common as one might imagine, and sightings are never guaranteed. A century ago there were as many as 200,000 wild lions in Africa, but the current estimate is of 20,000 lions, over 20% of their former range. Read more about lions here: The African Lion

For the best chance of seeing lions in the wild, it would be advisable to head to one of Africa’s ‘lion hotspots’.

Here are a few of the top places to see wild lions in Africa:

1. mara-serengeti ecosystem.

Stretching over 24,000 km² from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is home to one of the highest densities of lions in the world.

Within this area, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania boasts the oldest lion research project in Africa, The Serengeti Lion Project, which has been operating for nearly 50 years. In addition, expect good lion encounters in the Ngorongoro Crater , on the fringes of the Serengeti ecosystem. Outside of the Serengeti area, another excellent place in Tanzania to see lions is the remote Ruaha National Park . This arid, baobab-infested safari paradise offers remote safaris for the intrepid explorer.

Across the border in Kenya, the wide-open savannah plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve make for excellent lion viewing of large prides that are accustomed to tourist vehicles. The Mara lions have been made famous by the popular BBC TV series, Big Cat Diaries .

2. Northern Botswana

From dry savannahs to lush wetlands, northern Botswana has it all, and lions abound in this vast wild wilderness. These lions have adapted to their varied environments and have a wide range of prey species, from elephants and hippos to buffaloes and impala. And in the harsh dry winters when water is scarce, lions even compete with crocodiles to scavenge on rotting carcasses. Okavango Delta lions swim between islands and negotiate channels and floodplains during the annual flood season (June to August) in search of prey.

The Okavango Delta (and Moremi Game Reserve) hosts the largest lion population in the world, but also expect to see lions in the adjoining Chobe, Savute, Linyanti and Khwai areas in the unfenced wilderness of northern Botswana. In fact, further south in Botswana, the Kalahari and Tuli also host good lion populations.

Best places to see wild lions in Africa

3. Greater Kruger & Kruger National Park

The Greater Kruger is South Africa’s premier wildlife destination and is home to the majority of the country’s wild lions. The Kruger National Park is the size of Wales and is made larger because of unfenced western borders with various private game reserves, including Klaserie, Sabi Sand. Thornybush and Timbavati (famous for its naturally occurring population of white lions) – collectively known as the ‘Greater Kruger’.

Lions occur in all areas of the park, but they can be tough to find in the more remote northern areas. The large open plains of the central areas, and prey density further south, mean that more lions are seen in these areas.

4. Northern Namibia

Namibia’s lion population is spread across the northern reaches of this arid country, with Etosha National Park hosting the most easily accessible population. Etosha lions are best viewed in the dry winter months, and the best strategy to view them is to park at one of many waterholes and wait for them to come to you.

Perhaps the most fascinating Namibian lions are the desert-adapted lions , which occur in the remote Kaokoland/Damaraland region of the northwest, an area of sand dunes and sparse vegetation, wedged between Etosha and the barren Skeleton Coast. These formidable lions eke out a living despite the harsh landscape, low prey density and conflicts with farmers.

The best time to view the desert-adapted lions is during the dry winter season (June to October). During this time, they can be found hunting around the sparse water sources or lazing about in the open, soaking up the morning sun.

Africa Geographic Travel

5. Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Zambia’s Luangwa Valley hosts the majority of that country’s lion population.

The Luangwa Valley is the birthplace of African walking safaris – a very special wildlife experience for any safari enthusiast. Encountering wild lions whilst on foot with an experienced guide is one of Africa’s quintessential safari experiences.

South Luangwa National Park, particularly, offers incredible lion viewing opportunities, with frequent sightings of large prides of up to 30 lions. The smaller, more remote North Luangwa also offers excellent lion sightings, for the more intrepid traveller.

Elsewhere in Zambia, Kafue National Park is a good place to see lions, particularly in the Busanga Plains area – a vast open floodplain system in the north of the park.

6. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Hwange hosts a large population of lions and prey species – including large herds of buffalo, a favourite item on the menu. Zimbabwe’s largest national park offers excellent lion habitat – including grass plains, deciduous woodlands and thorn savannah, and the network of waterholes provides good positioning for tourists wishing to experience a lion kill. Just a short drive from Victoria Falls, Hwange is a convenient add-on to your southern African safari.

Lion Safaris

Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris.

The Lion truly is the king of all safari experiences. The only cats in the world that have a social structure, lion sightings are often spectacular in their interactions. Be warned: lions will sleep a lot during the day, so don’t be disappointed if you catch them out for the count. Early mornings and evening are the best times to see their big prides active and hunting.

The Serengeti, Kenya’s Masai Mara, Botswana’s Duba Plains, the Kruger National Park in South Africa and Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater are the best places in Africa to see these incredible species in their natural habitat.

The strongest of Africa’s cats by far, the mighty lion never fails to produce a memorable sighting

Africa Dream Safaris maintains a fleet of specially outfitted 4-wheel drive Stretched Land Cruisers providing for maximum flexibility, comfort, and wildlife viewing. Your private safari includes exclusive use of this vehicle with no mileage restrictions and unlimited game drives for the duration of your safari. Our spacious Stretched Land Cruisers are the most ideal safari vehicle and come equipped with a total of nine seats with seven of those seats in the back under the canvas top. Our canvas convertible tops allow you to view wildlife with the fewest imposed constraints and in the most open and raw format possible.

Canvas Tops

We do not employ mini-vans or other less capable vehicles. As discussed, all our vehicles have a canvas top, which can be rolled back completely so that you may game view standing from any of the seats. There is nothing like the feeling of freedom you get when exploring the secluded wilderness, surrounded by expansive views of vast horizons, underneath the unobstructed dome of a brilliant blue sky. So roll the top back, feel the breeze on your face and get ready for an unparalleled game viewing experience!

For these reasons and more we do not employ 'pop up top' vehicles or vehicles with 'roof hatches'. We strongly believe that a convertible canvas top provides the best possible game viewing experience and is much more enjoyable then game viewing in a vehicle with a 'pop up top'. Pop up tops tend to inhibit your freedom and obstruct your views, especially with regards to some of the more spectacular sightings whether it be a leopard in a tree or a pride of lions resting on top of a kopje. Roof hatches also impede your comfort when game viewing as the narrow hatch restricts your movement. In contrast to these less favorable options, our canvas convertible tops allow you to view wildlife with the fewest imposed constraints and in the most open and raw format possible.

Please note that our convertible canvas tops do have one significant disadvantage in that you will be completely exposed when game viewing. Accordingly, it is critical that you wear a hat and apply sun block frequently to all exposed areas. You may roll back the canvas top half way in order to provide shade for the first set of seats and sun for the back seats. Please do not hesitate to ask your driver guide to roll the top back up partially.

Retractable sun shades (not a pop up top) are available starting in 2014. If you are particularly sensitive to the sun, please contact your safari consultant to request your vehicle be equipped with a retractable sun shade.

Land Cruisers

Land Cruisers are also the most functional safari vehicle, capable of handling poor road conditions, and are extremely strong off road. You will appreciate the flexibility and reliability of your Land Cruiser, especially if your itinerary involves significant off road driving. The Land Cruiser is the most optimal vehicle to get to all the best wildlife viewing spots which are sometimes well "off the beaten path." One vehicle is ideal for groups ranging from one to six persons.

It is possible to fit seven guests in one vehicle but this is only recommended for a family of seven with small children. Every Land Cruiser is equipped with a long distance radio. These radios are used for communication between your vehicle and other driver-guides for game reports, as well as communication with our main operational office in Arusha. If there is any problem on safari, your driver-guide can immediately handle the situation as he is trained and has the expertise. He also can use his long distance radio to communicate with our operational office in Arusha or any ranger station for additional support if required.

Contingency Planning

Flat tires are fairly common when game driving the rough tracks in the national parks. Tire changes are handled quickly by your driver-guide with little inconvenience. Vehicle break-downs are extremely rare as our vehicles are rigorously maintained. However, in the unusual event of a vehicle breakdown, a replacement vehicle would be immediately sent and would likely arrive within 2 hours as support vehicles are always on stand by. With our excellent contingency planning and communication systems you'll never have to worry about being stranded (or even significantly inconvenienced) while on safari.

All vehicles come equipped with the following:

  • Nikon Action 7 x 35 Binoculars For Each Person
  • Convertible Canvas Top
  • Total of Nine Seats
  • Comprehensive Field Guides
  • Detailed National Park Maps
  • Refrigerated Cool Box
  • Unlimited Bottled Water
  • Unlimited Soft Drinks Including Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite
  • Snacks and Candy
  • Long Distance Radio and Cell Phone
  • Two Spare Tires
  • Seat Covers and Armrests
  • Comfortable high backed seats

While we have not traveled as yet, the itinerary that we developed is very exciting and we are looking forward to this experience very much. Jayson Scheffers has been a wonderfully engaged and responsive partner in developing our agenda, despite our having some needs to change travel dates and agendas during the planning process because of family illness that necessitated our changing plans.
Excellent Experience
The communication and organization of the trip was excellent. Shann was great and the whole experience was amazing.

Great experience working with Lisa
Great experience working with Lisa from Safari.com, provided very helpful information and came up with a detailed itinerary for our stay in Cape Town and our 3 day safari at Sanbona. Unfortunately Lisa needed to go to a hospital but the company took over the booking process and all went very smooth. We wish Lisa a quick recovery.
7-nights Safari
I made a reservation for a 7-night safari trip to two specific Private Game Reserves in the Kruger National Park in South Africa, for one of the busiest months in Kruger: August. This reservation was made at the last minute. (3 days ago). A reservation that had some special features, with choices from someone who has already done (my husband and I) several safaris in other African countries. The architecture and design of the lodges are important to us on a professional level. And the Private Game Reserves had to be the best. Anja Meyer, from Safari.com, started and completed the reservation process in 4 days, two of which were weekends. Very efficient, fast and understanding what we wanted for our week in the bush. We are "addicted" to safaris, wildlife, bush, landscapes, nature... and we love Africa and the Africans. We can't wait for August to arrive. Thank you!

My first experience a number of months…
My first experience a number of months back wasn't as I wanted. I picked up with Dolan a little after this to find when the best time to Safari was with the chance of seeing the "big 5" and he was so helpful, guiding me to July-September. With the cooler winter months being the better chances to see more wildlife and the big five. This lead me on to deal with Jayson. Jayson has pulled out all the stops, working past 9pm Cape Town time( 8pm London UK) to help meet my needs. I travel out on 6th July and cannot wait, Thank you Dolan and Jayson. Julian Bingle, London, UK.

Sara Van Coillie has been extremely…
Sara Van Coillie has been extremely helpful in making our Namibia trip fantastic! We have emails up on emails of Sara answering all my (many) questions months and months before our trip. I've had last minute questions and requests right before and during our trip and she always responds with record time and helps us out. I feel all of our needs have been met and I couldn't be happier with Sara as our travel representative! Highly recommend her! :)

Pascal John extremely helpful, efficient and knowledgeable
Pascal John was very helpful with recommendations for our Safari Booking. He responded to all our emails and txt messages extremely quickly, especially given the time difference. He also sent videos of his recent experience at the lodges which was especially helpful.
