How do you unlock a TSA lock if you forgot the combination?

Securing a lock to luggage

Using a TSA lock on your suitcase is a great way to keep your belongings safe while making it easy for TSA officers to do their job. But, because the lock requires a combination, it gives you something else to remember in addition to all those passwords floating around in your head. And that means there’s a chance you’re eventually going to forget it.

Don’t worry. We’ll show you how to open a TSA lock when you forget the combination, so you can get on with your travels even when the code escapes you.

What is a TSA lock, anyway?

A TSA lock is one to which only TSA officials have a key. You set the combination yourself and, if a TSA agent has to look inside your bag because they see something suspicious on the scanner, it can be easily opened with their master key. If you use a lock that’s not TSA-approved, the agent’s only way to get in is to cut the lock or the bag itself, possibly damaging it.

Advertisement Advertisement

Many suitcases already come with built-in TSA locks but, if they don’t, you can buy one separately.

How to open your TSA lock and reset the combination

If you forget your TSA lock combination, there are a few methods you’ll want to try to open it. And, yes, you do have to open it before you can reset the combination. Because there’s no standard solution for this, you’ll have to experiment to see which one works for you.

Since different locks require different processes, the most effective first step may be to call the luggage or lock company itself (or check their website) for brand-specific instructions.

Travel Sentry, whose red diamond logo certifies that a lock is TSA-approved, recommends trying every possible combination from 000-999, starting with 000, 001, 002 … and working your work to 999. Although, admittedly, this seems time-consuming, they assure it should take 30 minutes or less, especially if the first number is a 0, 1 or 2 (something to keep in mind when you’re coming up with a new combination).

If the idea of that is overwhelming and your luggage features a built-in TSA lock, you can try this:

  • Use a safety pin to locate the metal or plastic cylinder on the right side of the first dial. The flashlight and camera on your phone can help you zoom in on it.
  • Turn the dial and, with the safety pin, look for an indentation or gap in the cylinder. Leave the dial at that number.
  • Repeat the process for the other two dials.
  • If the lock doesn’t open, turn all three dials down one number.
  • If the lock still doesn’t open, keep turning all three dials down one number at a time until it does.

Here’s another method that has worked for travelers with TSA padlocks:

  • Put pressure on the locking mechanism by pushing the button or pulling on the lock.
  • Turn the first dial slowly until you hear an audible click, which signals it’s the correct number.
  • Repeat the process for the next two dials.
  • When all three numbers are correct, the lock will open.

If you forget your combination while the lock is still open, all you have to do is reset it with a new combination. Again, you may be best off checking the brand’s website for individual instructions, but you can reset most freestanding locks this way:

  • Set each dial to 0 so it reads 000.
  • Rotate the shackle 90 degrees from the lock position.
  • Press the shackle and keep it down while you set your three-digit combination.
  • Release the shackle and turn it back to the lock position.

To reset most built-in locks, simply slide the lock button in the direction of the arrow, set your new code and release the button.

Is it really worth using a TSA lock?

Using a TSA lock is totally a matter of personal preference. Many travelers feel safer knowing that their luggage is secure while others don’t want to have to worry about remembering one more thing. The fact is, of the 1.4 million checked bags the TSA screens daily, only about 5% of checked bags are actually opened by agents for further inspection.

Our advice? Use a TSA lock and store your combination safely in your phone for all-around peace of mind.

Beis Luggage Review: Is It Worth Buying?

Beis luggage has become very popular in the past couple of years. It’s largely because the brand is owned by a famous actress, so it gets a lot of publicity and love from her fans. Whether the luggage is actually any good is what you’ll find out in this honest Beis luggage review!

I’ll tell you about the build quality and durability of all the Beis suitcases and popular bags, plus I’ll throw in some personal experiences from (un)happy customers. You’ll also learn about all the features that are unique to Beis luggage, and which are often the main reason why people bite the bullet and get this luggage.

About Béis Travel

Beis Travel is a company that manufactures high-quality and stylish luggage. The company was founded in 2018 by Shay Mitchell, an actress you might remember from her roles in You and Pretty Little Liars . When launching the brand, Mitchell stated that her main goal was to address the issues she was dealing with as a frequent flyer and traveler.

The main goals of Beis were to create luggage and travel accessories that are durable, affordable, and stylish. There’s no denying that these suitcases (and all the accessories) look amazing, but are they durable and affordable? We can judge that together if you join me in this detailed review of Beis luggage!

Béis Luggage

In this section, I will talk you through all the main features of Beis suitcases . There are three pieces of luggage in the suitcase collection – The Carry-on Roller, Medium Check-In Roller, and Large Check-In Roller. The suitcases are available in several different colors, but the main features are identical across all the cases.

Materials & Design

The Beis suitcases are made from durable polycarbonate, which is the best type of plastic that can be used in the manufacturing of luggage. It’s not quite as durable as aluminum, but aluminum is significantly heavier and a good option only if you want extra-durable luggage.

Polycarbonate is flexible; it bends upon impact, which means that the luggage can handle being thrown around by baggage handlers and still arrive at baggage claim without cracks in the shell. The material is also lightweight, but it does not have the best scratch resistance. However, Beis luggage boasts a textured shell, which will help hide the scuffs and scratches.

All Beis suitcases have integrated TSA-approved locks that allow you to lock the main compartment. This feature is essential for checked bags because there’s always a chance that the TSA will choose your suitcase for a random inspection, and if it doesn’t have a TSA-friendly lock, they can just pry it open.

This luggage features standard TSA-friendly combination locks, and you can easily set up the combination to be anything you want if you just follow the instructions you receive with the suitcase.

360 Degree Wheels

Spinner wheels are an essential feature for a smooth rolling experience, and these suitcases won’t disappoint. Every Beis suitcase is equipped with double spinner wheels that roll smoothly and silently on airport floors. The 360-degree design means you never have to tilt your suitcase to get the wheels rolling, which in turn means a lighter load on your arms.

The wheel handle of the Beis suitcases is extendable and height-adjustable. It’s a classic narrow wheel handle, which means it protrudes inside the main compartment a little bit. However, the narrow design also means that you can easily secure any bag with a trolley sleeve to the wheel handle of this suitcase.

The telescopic handle also has a soft cushion on the grip, which will make your hands a lot more comfortable when you’re wheeling the bag around. Honestly, I think this is an excellent feature because I haven’t seen it in many other suitcases, and it’s definitely something that can help you on longer trips.

This luggage also features low-profile grab handles on the top and side. The side carry handle even has a weight limit indicator that will turn red if your luggage weighs more than 50 lbs.

Inside the Beis Luggage

The interior of this luggage is my favorite thing about it. It’s fully lined and the lining is the same color as the exterior of the luggage, which is a lovely touch. The suitcase features two packing compartments with a height-adjustable divider in the bottom compartment and a zippered divider with two pockets in the top one.

The zippered divider features two additional pockets, one of which is entirely waterproof and perfect for toiletries or wet clothes. There’s also a flat pocket on the compression pad in the bottom compartment, so the organizational features of this luggage are pretty good.

Additional Features

Beis luggage includes a few additional features that will make your life easier when traveling. This quality luggage is equipped with removable laundry bags that will help with organization when packing. There’s also the side weight limit indicator I’ve already mentioned, as well as a retractable add-a-bag strap on the front of the case, which can hold bags that weigh up to 15 lbs.

Value for Money

Honestly, the Beis luggage is pretty good value for money. It’s in a similar price range as luggage from Monos and Away, but it’s got better features. Beis luggage features quite a few unique features I haven’t seen in any other suitcases, and you get awesome durability and quality for the price point.

Béis Luggage Set

The Beis luggage set is good value for money if you need more than one piece of luggage. You can build your own luggage set and you’ll get a 10% discount for two pieces of luggage, and 15% off for three pieces of luggage. Only suitcases are eligible for this bundle, and it’s worth noting that you can choose any colors you like.

One thing to make clear is that you can purchase three identical suitcases if you want. You don’t have to mix and match sizes within the bundle, which is pretty cool for purchasing gifts.

Other Béis Products

Weekender bags.

The Beis Weekender Bag is one of Beis’ more popular products and the brand offers several versions of it. There’s the Mini Weekender Bag and the classic Weekender Bag, and the key difference is that only the smaller version will be accepted as a personal item on most flights. The classic Weekender Bag is 19”, so it’s considered a carry-on.

The Mini Weekender Bag pairs perfectly with Beis carry-on rollers, especially since you can get it in a color that matches the luggage. Secure it to the top of the luggage with the trolley sleeve, use use the add-a-bag strap from the Beis carry-on Roller to attach it to the front of your suitcase!

The Weekender bags feature a spacious main compartment with a padded laptop sleeve inside, an additional compartment at the bottom with waterproof lining, and multiple open and zippered pockets. The bags all have two grab handles and a detachable shoulder strap, so you can carry them multiple ways.

Travel Totes

Beis has two travel totes in its product range – the East-to-West Tote Bag and the North-to-South Tote . The East to West tote is the larger of the two with a capacity of 31 liters, while the other travel tote features a capacity of 21 liters. The bigger tote is also wider (around 17”) and I’m not sure if it can pass as a personal item every time. The smaller tote should be deemed a personal item on most flights.

Both tote bags feature a padded laptop compartment, Beis’ signature key slip, a removable shoulder strap, and an external zippered pocket. You also get multiple interior pockets inside the totes, but it’s important to note that only the wider tote bag (East to West) comes with a convenient trolley sleeve.

Beis has five backpacks in its product range, including three standard adult backpacks, a kid’s backpack, and a diaper bag. A Beis backpack is a good option if you prefer backpacks to tote bags and weekender bags, especially if you want all your luggage to match.

However, if you’re looking for a really good backpack, I don’t think you’ll be very pleased with their bags. They’re affordable, I’ll give them that, since all backpacks except for the diaper bag are under $100, but none of them feature a ventilated back panel.

The entire back system looks a little sad to me if I’m being perfectly honest. The straps look rather thin, there’s no sternum strap or hip belt to speak of, and the back panel has minimal padding.

Sure, the Beis backpacks feature lots of pockets and a roomy main compartment, and they’re a good option if you want a bag you can just secure to the top of your suitcase while you’re at the airport. But if you want a proper travel backpack, I wouldn’t really recommend these bags.

Béis Shipping Reviews

The speed and cost of shipping Beis luggage depend on where you’re located. It works best for customers in the US; they get free shipping on orders of at least $150 and the goods should arrive in less than 5 business days. But that’s just for customers in the continental US; there’s an upcharge for shipments to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Alaska, plus the shipping will take longer.

People didn’t complain too much about shipping, but what they did complain about is the ridiculously high shipping and handling fee you have to pay if you want to return a product. The handling fee is a flat $10, but the shipping costs will differ depending on where you’re situated. They can easily cost around $100, so in some cases it’s just not worth it to return the bag.

Is Béis Luggage Worth Buying?

It depends on what you’re looking for, but I would say that in most cases, Beis luggage is worth buying. The suitcases are really good and comparable in quality to mid-range luggage brands, so it’s not like you’re just paying to own an item from a celebrity-owned brand. This luggage also has multiple unique features that really make it stand out, and that shows just how much thought went into the design of the suitcases.

The suitcases really are great, and they’re worth every penny. The tote bags and the weekender bags are also really good and pair well with the rolling luggage. But I would stay away from backpacks for now, at least until they figure out they should include some breathable mesh in the back system.

How Do You Reset A Tsa Lock If You Forgot The Combination

Last Updated on January 17, 2021

Got yourself into a bit of a pickle huh?

This post is about opening and resetting TSA locks when you have forgot the combination.

You’re going to need some time and patience to get this done.

So first relax and read this article it will only take a few minutes and should save you time in the long run.

TSA Locks Reset From The Open Position

I’m sure I don’t need to point out to you that the whole point of a combination lock is that you can’t unlock it without knowing the combination.

But I’m going to bold the next statement just in case…

You can only reset the TSA locks when they are in the open position.

So the correct question to ask yourself right now is how do you open a TSA lock when you don’t know the combination. You can worry about how to change the combination after you get it open!

There are a few options and the best choice depends on how much of a rush you are in.

Try The Factory Setting

Most luggage locks have a factory setting of 000.

So if you never set up your own code then try turning the dials to 000 and then press the button or pull on the shackle.

If you reset the factory code to a new combination when you bought the lock you’ll need to find another method.

Get Your Hands On A TSA Key Set

Of course, TSA approved locks are a special type of combination lock because there is a master key that opens the lock it’s just that only TSA security officers have the key…

You could go to the airport and ask a TSA officer if they can help you unlock your luggage.

Each TSA approved luggage lock has a code written on it – TSA001, TSA002, TSA003, TSA004, TSA005, TSA006, or TSA007.

These codes tell the TSA officer which key they need to use to open the lock.

The problem with this is it’s unless you happen to be very close to the airport it will take a long time to get there and there is no guarantee that anyone will help you. It’s not their job to open your suitcase for you although it does happen.

For most people, going to the airport and asking for help will not be the best option.

Picking The TSA Lock

A while back the Washington post was writing an article about luggage. They published a close-up photo with all the TSA master keys.

Someone then took that photo and used it to create 3D cad files that modeled the TSA master keys.

So if you happen to own a 3D printer or know someone that does you could try downloading and printing a key to unlock your luggage.

But while 3D printers are becoming more popular you probably don’t own one.

Another option would be to go on eBay and buy a master key. In theory, only TSA officers should have these keys. But in reality, you can find people selling the master keys online.

However, you’re locked out of your suitcase, and it will take days for keys to arrive. There are faster ways to open a TSA lock.

How To Open a Tsa Lock When You Don’t Know The Code

The slow method – trying all the possible numbers.

Most TSA locks will have 3 dials meaning that there are only 1000 different possible combinations.

The slow tedious way to open a TSA lock is often the fastest way to get the damn thing open.

To open a TSA lock when you have forgotten the code try all the codes from 000 through to 999. It won’t take as long as you think. Keep the open button pressed as you turn the dial.

Use a stopwatch to time how long it takes you to test 100 numbers then multiply by 10. This will be the longest amount of time it will take you to crack the code.

If you had just tried this method instead of looking on Google you might have the case open already!

You simply need to start at 000 and try all the numbers until you find the one that opens the case.

You might think that this will take forever but you can do this reasonably quickly. It will take you less time than going to the airport and searching for a TSA officer. And it will be quicker than printing keys or buying keys.

You need to be methodical and make sure that you try each possible combination code.

This is the surefire way to get your case open and then reset your code to something you won’t forget.

It might only take 30 minutes to work your way through all the numbers and if you can remember any of the digits it will be even faster.

If you have a lock with 4 dials then that’s a different ball game. The slow method will be really slow and it could take 5 – 10 hours to try all the different combinations.

That’s still achievable if you are not in a rush and spend 30 – 60 minutes each day for a number of days, but if you need to open your lock fast you’ll need a different method.

The Faster Method – Dialing & Listening

This method might work and is worth trying. If it doesn’t work then revert to the slow method.

You need to do this in a quiet place so the airport lobby isn’t a good place to try this.

  • Step 1 – Push the unlock button and hold it down or apply constant pressure on the shackle if it’s a padlock
  • Step 2 – Slowly turn one of the dials and listen for a click. If you hear a click this is the right number
  • Step 3 – Repeat for all the dials.
  • Step 4 – When all the dials are correct if you are still pushing the unlock button or pulling the shackle the lock should open.

This video is a great demonstration of the technique. It should work for combination locks or wordlocks. There is a knack to it so have patience and good luck.

And just or good measure here is another video demonstrating the same technique:

Hanging the padlock on the hook is an ingenious way to make it easy to apply constant pressure on the shackle!

How To Remember A Code That You Forgot – The ‘Have Faith’ Method

The mind works in mysterious ways. If you don’t need to reset your TSA lock today then try this method.

Take the suitcase out from the cupboard, spend 5 minutes looking at the lock, play around with the dials, maybe try going through 000 to 100 testing.

Then since you are not in a great rush just go to sleep and often the next day you will miraculously remember the code.

It’s like you set your brain a task to work on when you are sleeping.

If you are not in a rush to reset your lock today then this is usually the best way. Have faith, you will remember the code eventually.

Instructions To Reset A TSA Lock

Now that you’ve got your case open you will be able to reset the combination code.

The best way to do this is to find the instructions from your luggage manufacturer or luggage lock maker.

But I’ll have an attempt at writing some generic instructions:

  • Step 1 – Enter the current combination and open the lock.
  • Step 2 – Turn the shackle and to a 90 degree angle
  • Step 3 – Push the shackle down
  • Step 4 – Change the combination.
  • Step 5 – Pull the shackle up and return to the lock position
  • Step 6 – Enter the new combination to check that you changed it correctly
  • Step 7 – Better write down your new combination code this time!

If you have a built-in integral TSA lock rather than a padlock the steps are the same but use the reset button rather than pushing and pulling on the shackle in steps 2 and 3. You might need to use a mini screwdriver to push in the reset button.

This is a great video about resetting using by pushing and pulling on the shackle:

The Verdict

If you are don’t need access to your suitcase soon then sometimes the simplest thing to do is just to wait.

Before you go to sleep at night visualize the lock with its dial in your mind’s eye. Ask yourself what the code is? You might just find that you know the answer in the morning.

If you need to get your open today then stop reading this post and go start trying all the combinations right now. You’ll find the code soon enough.

Luggage locks don’t really keep your belongings safe anyway. Any determined thief will get into a suitcase if they want. They are usually very easy to cut open. Or a ballpoint pen rammed into the zip will burst it open. If you have a soft case a knife could be used to cut into the fabric.

Luggage locks are more of a marketing gimmick that brands use to get you to buy their suitcase. They are more a deterrent than a true way to secure your travel bag.

The best way to keep your belongings safe is to pack them in carry-on luggage rather than checked luggage and then keep an eye on your case.

This is another of the benefits of traveling light!

We have full instructions for a number of scenarios below. I would love to put the solutions here, but the instructions are too long, so please read on to find the answer to your situation.

So, together, let’s explore why your TSA luggage lock won’t open and find all the lost secrets to fix the problem.

3 Reasons Why Your Luggage Lock Won’t Open

I am sure there are more than 3 reasons, but these are the ones most will encounter.

Forgotten Lock Combination

It can happen to anyone – forgetting the lock combination. And who can blame you if you fail to remember your 3-digit lock combination? There are too many PINs, passwords, and alpha-numeric combinations that you have to remember for everything. And since it’s not every day that you use your travel luggage, it’s easy to forget those three numbers.

Jammed Or Stuck Lock

You may know the 3-digit combination, but your built-in luggage lock seems jammed or stuck. If you know what to do when your luggage lock won’t open because of a jammed lock, you’re good to go.

Lock With Debris

What if your luggage padlock key doesn’t work and my luggage lock won’t open because of some foreign particles in the shackle or the keyhole? Any idea on what to do when your luggage won’t open in this case?

What To Do When Your Luggage Lock Won't Open 2

What To Do When Your Luggage Won’t Open: Secrets No More

The first thing to do is determine the type of lock you are dealing with. Then, you can try some of the troubleshooting tips below on what to do when your luggage lock won’t open.

TSA Locks: Forgotten Combination

Both the built-in luggage lock and stand-alone padlock have 3-digit combination lock settings. Unfortunately, forgetting these three numbers in the correct sequence can happen. Do you know what to do when your luggage won’t open because you forgot the 3-digit combination?

Built-in TSA Combination Lock Won’t Open

If your built-in luggage lock is TSA-approved and you forgot the 3-digit combination, try the tip below on what to do when your luggage lock won’t open:

  • Locate the metal or plastic cylinder on the right side of the first dial.
  • Turn the dial and use the safety pin to find an indentation or gap in the cylinder. Leave the dial at that number.
  • Do the same for the other two dials.
  • If the lock doesn’t open, turn all three dials one number down.
  • Repeat the process if the lock still won’t open. Turn each dial one at a time, one number down, until the lock opens.

TSA Approved Padlock

Do you know what to do when your luggage lock won’t open if it’s a TSA padlock? You can try these steps:

  • Push the button or pull the lock to put pressure on the locking mechanism.
  • Next, slowly turn the first dial until you hear an audible click. Keep the dial set in that number.
  • Do the same process for the other two dials.
  • The lock will open when all the numbers on the three dials are correct.

Special Case: Lock In Open Position

What if you need help remembering the combination of your TSA padlock while it’s in the open position? Try this trick on what to do when your luggage won’t open.

  • All three dials must be at the 0 position.
  • Turn the shackle 90 degrees from the lock position.
  • Press the shackle down and keep it down while you set your three-digit combination.
  • Release the shackle and turn it back to the lock position.

For built-in combination locks, reset the lock by sliding the lock button toward the arrow. Then, set the new number combination and release the button.

3 Digit Combination Trials

Here’s what to do when your luggage lock won’t open if one of the three digits changes due to movement during the flight.

  • Try using the combination, but change one number at a time. There are only 27 possible combinations. If this method doesn’t work, try the step below.
  • Time to try the factory setting. Most locks are in the default setting at 000 or 999 positions. Turn the dials until they reach these combinations; you might be lucky.
  • Try all possible combinations, from 001 to 999. According to Travel Sentry (TSA lock makers), it only takes about half an hour to reach the 999 combinations.

Buy A TSA Padlock Key

TSA padlock keys have number indicators – from 001 to 007. You can buy these padlocks with corresponding lock keys. What to do when your luggage lock won’t open? First, check the padlock to see if there’s a number written right next to the combination. For example, for a 002 lock, buy a 002 key. However, these keys may not open every single type of lock but can open most locks.

Ask The Luggage Manufacturer

Some luggage manufacturers make locks that are virtually impossible to open, and for a good reason – to protect and secure the traveler’s belongings. The best tip on what to do when your luggage lock won’t open is to contact the manufacturer’s Customer Service hotline is best for assistance. Most high-end luggage manufacturers help and give instructions on what to do when your luggage lock won’t open.

What To Do When Your Luggage Lock Won't Open 3

Non-TSA Jammed Locks

Do you know what to do when your luggage lock won’t open if you have a jammed lock? You got the 3-digit combination right, but your luggage lock won’t move. You can try these steps:

Wriggle The Luggage Combination Lock or Padlock

For some reason, your luggage lock got jammed due to vibrations on the airplane during the flight. You wonder what to do when your luggage lock won’t open in this case. Try to wriggle the luggage lock back and forth. If you’re lucky, it will only take a few times of jiggling to get the lock back to work again. Otherwise, you should try another what to do when your luggage lock won’t open method below.

Remove Debris From The Lock

Inspect your luggage lock closely to see if foreign particles have accidentally jammed the lock. Do you know what to do when your luggage lock won’t open because debris got in the way? First, try to remove the particle using a small brush, toothpick, or thin, sharp object that can push the particle out. You can also use a can of compressed air to loosen the debris causing the lock to jam. Point the nozzle of the compressed air can at the keyhole and spray it a few times.

Shake, Tap, And Spray The Shackle In Open Position

For a jammed padlock, inspect the U-shaped metal piece called the shackle to see if it is in the open position. Then, try and gently push and pull the shackle until it moves. If what to do when your luggage lock won’t open trick doesn’t work, spray WD-40 or other lubricant sprays directly to the shackle. Move the shackle back and forth until it pops open.

Last Resort: Lock Replacement

if these solutions don’t work contact the TSA lock manufacturer for a replacement if it’s a TSA combination lock or padlock. If it’s a non-TSA padlock, get the lock or luggage manufacturer for assistance in fixing or replacing the luggage lock.

Preventive Measures

Having a stuck or jammed luggage lock is inconvenient and troublesome, especially if none of the methods above work. However, you can do a few things to help prevent this from happening. This way, you won’t have to worry about knowing what to do when your luggage lock won’t open anymore.

  • Because you use your luggage rarely, it’s essential that you properly maintain the luggage locks. Also, make sure that you keep your luggage dust-free when in storage.
  • Your luggage padlock is one of many things with spare keys. Keep a bundle of spare keys for your travel luggage locks, and bring the spare key of the luggage lock you are using for your travel.
  • Store your luggage lock combination on your phone so you can access it anytime and have the right 3-digit lock combination.
  • Spend a bit more on high-quality and reliable luggage locks. What good is cheap luggage if you can’t open the lock when you use the luggage a couple of times? Expensive alternatives are better if they have luggage locks that carry a warranty.

FAQs About What To Do When Your Luggage Lock Won’t Open

We have gathered three frequently asked questions about what to do when your luggage lock won’t open.

Can airlines open locked luggage?

The airport security and not the airlines can open locked luggage suspected of having a prohibited item inside. Hence, make sure that your luggage has a built-in TSA-approved combination lock. This type of lock will allow TSA officers to open the luggage lock to check your bag without breaking it. The TSA will then re-lock your luggage and put an inspection tag inside to inform the owner that TSA checked the bag.

What is the most common TSA key?

The most common TSA keys in most suitcases are the TSA 007 and TSA 002. You can find other TSA key numbers, e.g., TSA 004 in CCL Presto Locks and TSA 005 in some high-end luggage locks like Samsonite and Lewis & Clark.

Do airports break luggage locks?

The TSA and luggage manufacturers worked together to create locks that only TSA can open with a master key. However, if your luggage lock is not TSA-approved, TSA agents can break your luggage lock to open the suitcase for further inspection.

TSA lock jammed; what to do?

Suppose your TSA lock jams; try lubricating the lock with a silicone spray or graphite powder. You can try this method whether your TSA lock is jammed open or closed. If that doesn’t work, consider contacting the manufacturer for further guidance or hiring a professional locksmith to help you unlock it safely.

This test ensures that your belongings are not only well-protected but also easily accessible during your travels.

Material Inspection

The material of your carry-on speaks volumes about its durability and longevity. Feel the material of the carry-on. Assess its quality, texture, and durability. High-quality materials not only last longer but also maintain the aesthetic appeal of your luggage. best carry on luggage suitcases

Okay, so summer is here and I know you're as ready as I am to head off on holiday!

So you've booked your tickets and marked your calendars and now the next step is to get packing. Whether you're jetting to the coast for a sun-soaked vacation or embarking on a city break with loved ones, it's always good to pack light.

  • Best Amazon carry-on: LEVEL8 Carry-on Suitcase With Front Pocket
  • Best affordable soft-side carry-on: IT Luggage World’s Lightest 2 Wheel Cabin Suitcase
  • Celebrity favourite carry-on: AWAY The Carry-On Flex
  • Hailey Bieber-approved carry-on: Beis The Carry-On Roller

I've travelled everywhere from Glasgow to Thailand this year, and there's one thing every trip has had in common: a great carry on suitcase to bring on the plane as hand luggage. Even for longer trips, I don't like to risk losing what I'll need for the first few days in case of lost luggage – we're already seeing those much-repeated scenes of summer airport chaos and missing cases in the news!

So, I can advise that, if you're wanting a stress-free holiday, a carry-on suitcase could be the best option. So we've rounded up the best hand luggage for your travels, so you can make the process as easy and as stress-free as possible.

What to consider when choosing a carry-on suitcase

As a former military kid and current transatlantic frequent flier, I’ve taken a lot of flights in my lifetime! Here’s what you should look for in a carry on suitcase:

  • Size : This is the most important factor, because the most important detail about a carry on is that you’re allowed to carry it on the plane! Check your go-to airline’s size restrictions, but generally they should measure around 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm).
  • Hard-shell or soft? Soft-shell suitcases are much lighter and easier to fit in small spaces and in the overhead bins. They don’t, however, protect your belongings as well as a durable hard shell. Hard shell cases also are handy in case you ever have to check your carry on. Whichever you choose, make sure the zipper is sturdy and secure.
  • Compartments : Internal compartments will help keep you organised, and a carry-on bag with external pockets for your tablet or laptop will give you easy access, making going through security much smoother.

Step out with the most stylish carry-on luggage from Amazon, John Lewis, ASOS and more.

How I picked the best carry on suitcases

  • Tried and tested: If a member of the HELLO! team owns and loves a certain carry on suitcase, you'll find it on this list with our honest opinion.
  • Verified ratings and reviews: Where we haven't personally tested out the bag, I've scoured verified opinions from real shoppers to find the most popular and most-loved pieces to shop now.
  • Trusted brands and retailers: I've only selected carry on suitcases from HELLO! Shopping Team go-tos and brands and retailers that have a proven track record of success with our readers.
  • Style:  There's no sense in ruining your well-planned airport outfit with a dowdy bag, so I've picked the most aesthetically pleasing carry-ons by respected brands, from classics Samsonite and Antler to celebrity faves like Beis and Away.
  • Price point:  I'll leave it up to you whether you want to splurge on a luxury bag or save with an Amazon pick! But I've included an option for every budget.

How to get the most out of your carry-on luggage this summer.

Experts on the team at Dr. Martens have rounded up some fabulous advice about how to get the most of your carry-on luggage this summer. We're taking notes...

  • Plan your outfits day by day to save yourself space and get-ready time. I am old school so just lay my clothes out on the bed and try them on with shoes and accessories - although I have friends who take photos to know what they'll look like! According to Dr Martens, that's a great idea. “This way you’ll only take what you need. It might also be useful to think of items that you can wear more than once and in multiple ways."
  • Use packing cubes.  I am a huge fan of packing cubes  - I swear by the leak-proof toiletry bag set by Mumi , and Amazon's space-saving compression packing cubes , so I absolutely concur with this advice! "Pack your underwear and socks in one, and tops and trousers in another, to keep things neat and compact...They’re particularly helpful for staying organised on multi-stop trips too, and for keeping your hotel room tidy.”
  • Bring two pairs of shoes, wearing your heaviest during travel. I do try to adhere to this advice, wearing trainers or boots on the flight and then bringing an alternate daytime pair. The exception is if I'm expecting to dress up, in which case I'll bring a third pair, an evening shoe.
  • Purchase toiletries at your destination. This is one my mother always told me as a key travel tip! For me the exception is hair products, which I can't always find at my destination so I put them into smaller containers. “Toiletries can take up a lot of space, so we’d recommend purchasing the basics once you arrive at your destination. Higher priced toiletries, or personal skin care products, could be decanted into smaller travel sized pots. These will allow you to only take what you need.”
  • Utilise your ‘personal item’ allowance as an extension of your carry on: When travelling with just a carry-on, I make sure to bring an additional tote designed to carry my laptop and my tablet, too, plus extra room for other must-haves that I want to keep handy, like medication, snacks and makeup for a pre-landing touch-up. "Before you travel, check your airline's policies on this to see how large a bag you can take. If you have additional clothes that don't fit in your case, try rolling instead of folding them and placing them at the bottom of your personal item bag to save space here too.”

Do Luggage Locks Actually Make Your Luggage More Secure? We Asked the TSA

Here's what you should know about luggage locks before packing for your next flight.

Harrison Pierce is a freelance writer and digital nomad passionate about personal finance and travel. He is traveling full-time with the help of points and miles and enjoys connecting with people on the ground. His work has been published in Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, USA Today Blueprint, Matador Network, and other publications.

  • Different Types of Luggage Locks

Why People Use Luggage Locks

How the tsa handles luggage locks, bottom line.

Oleksii Bilyk/Getty Images

Most suitcases on the market have locks. This added protection makes travelers feel more secure, but does it actually work? I spoke with Nathan Bahr and Jeff Church, supervisory transportation security officers at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Lorie Dankers, a spokesperson for the TSA, to find out.

Different Types of Luggage Locks

There are two main types of luggage locks. The more prevalent kind is one that is built into the suitcase — you’ll see these on many checked bags on the market right now. The other type of luggage lock is detachable and can be purchased separately from the suitcase. Most travelers with separate, detachable locks use these for duffle bags, backpacks, or other luggage without a built-in lock. Surprisingly, not all built-in locks are TSA-approved, so it’s important to look before purchasing a new suitcase.

According to the TSA, locks appear more often on checked bags than carry-ons. However, this will depend largely on where the traveler is heading and what they are traveling with. If you’re curious if your lock is TSA-approved, this is how you tell: “There's two different manufacturers,” explains Church. “[A TSA-approved lock] will have a diamond shape on the lock, and [at] the bottom of the lock, it will say TSA with some numbers.”

ronstik/Getty Images

Everyone wants to make sure their belongings stay safe while in transit. There are several reasons why people might use luggage locks, ranging from protection against theft to keeping the suitcase together. If you have a zipper that won’t stay shut, a lock can effectively ensure your suitcase doesn’t fall open while going through the conveyor belts until it reaches your final destination.

If the concern is the safety of your items while the luggage is in the custody of TSA, you have nothing to worry about. The TSA has heavy accountability measures, including CCTV footage during any potential physical inspection. You never have to worry about theft by TSA officers, so don’t purchase a lock solely for this reason.

However, people outside of the TSA, like third-party baggage handlers or even people waiting at the baggage carousel, could have access to your suitcase. A visible lock, whether built-in or external, could dissuade potential thieves from looking into your suitcase.

After leaving the check-in counter, all checked bags go through an explosive detection system. This system uses a 3D scanner to identify potential explosives. If the scanner flags a suitcase, an officer reviews the X-ray image and can either clear the bag or flag it for a physical inspection. “In our checked baggage room, we have a set of keys,” explains Church. “There's nine different keys for nine different locks.” If your suitcase is flagged and has a TSA-approved lock, it will be searched and resecured before it makes its way to the plane.

It’s important to know that only select TSA officers can access the keys to open TSA-approved locks. You don’t have to worry that dozens of sets of keys are floating around, able to open your suitcase at any moment. They are securely stored and tracked for further accountability.

“We have to secure our keys every morning and night to make sure we have control of the keys and that we haven't had someone wander through and collect the keys that shouldn't have access to them,” explains Bahr.

If you have a lock that is not TSA-approved and your bag is flagged, the lock will get cut. Bahr explains that the TSA has a set of bolt cutters to remove the locks if necessary. Although the lock cannot be repaired, the officer will try to use zip ties to secure the bag before sending it along.

Only around 5 percent of bags are opened for physical inspection, so you likely won’t encounter issues, regardless of your lock type. If your suitcase does need an inspection, it will be opened by any means necessary. Of the 5 percent that gets inspected, Bahr estimates that between 25 percent and 35 percent of bags are locked, so it certainly makes the process much more streamlined if it’s TSA-approved.

Carry-on bags are a slightly different situation. Since carry-ons remain with the passenger while they go through security, a TSA-approved lock isn’t as necessary. If an officer needs to perform a physical inspection after the carry-on goes through the scanner, the traveler can open the lock for the officer, whether it is TSA-approved or not.

As a full-time traveler, I highly recommend having a suitcase with a built-in TSA-approved luggage lock. I know my suitcase is secure while in transit, but it won’t need to be broken into for the TSA to do a physical inspection. If your suitcase doesn’t have a built-in TSA-approved lock, there are plenty of external locks on the market that are still TSA-approved. Look for the Travel Sentry marking, a little red diamond, to know if it falls into this category.

A quality weekender bag, the Everywhere Bag can store your 15-inch laptop, a weekend’s worth of garments and travel snacks. It’s a favorite of Sally Nguyen , a travel content creator and blogger who loves the bag’s multiple interior pockets, where she can store her electronics and travel documents separately. The water-resistant bag “also has a trolley sleeve which makes it easy to put it over your carry-on suitcase to wheel around,” says Nguyen. The zippers are lockable too, and the bag is customizable with your initials for an additional $35 fee. If you’re looking for more storage, pick the medium or large Everywhere Bag .

Rimowa Essential Check-In L

Rimowa Essential Check-In L

This large, checked luggage option has a hard shell polycarbonate exterior, an adjustable handle and an interior flex-divider, which the brand says can hold your belongings in place while you travel. It’s a favorite of travel journalist and writer Rana Good, who loves its hard shell build. It’s not entirely scratch-resistant, but any bumps and bruises don’t affect the stability or durability of the bag, according to Good. The bag has TSA-approved locks, spinner wheels for steering and zippered compartments for organization. And while this is the largest option on our list, it still weighs only 10.6 pounds.

The Carry-On Flex

The Carry-On Flex

Away also makes Nguyen’s favorite carry-on suitcase option, which she says can easily hold all her garments on long-haul trips and comes with a 100-day return policy. “I can fit two weeks’ worth of clothes in it and still have extra room to bring extra souvenirs home from my trips,” she says. It has a TSA combination lock, 360-degree spinner wheels and interior compression belts to hold your clothes in place. This luggage even has a hidden handle by its wheels to make it easier to lift it off baggage belts, according to the brand. The zipper expansion also adds 2.25 inches of packing space, according to the brand, and the bag weighs nine pounds when empty, according to the brand.

Freeform Medium Spinner

Samsonite Freeform Medium Spinner

Hardshell Samsonite spinner is a favorite of Select managing editor Leah Ginsberg who calls it “indestructible yet so lightweight.” It has a TSA combination lock, is expandable by 1.5 inches through the additional zipper and has a built-in ID tag to make it identifiable on baggage belts. There are double wheels for maneuvering and a divider on the interior to store your items separately. There is a retractable handle, which you can adjust to height.

Material: Polycarbonate | Weight: 8.48 pounds

Delsey Chatelet Air Checked Luggage

Delsey Chatelet Air Checked Luggage

I own this checked bag and love its zippers, as they’re extremely durable: even after years of overpacking my bag on trips to India, they haven’t frayed or broken off. I also appreciate that both the interior compartments have compression straps — my clothes and makeup remain unscathed even after long-haul flights. The bag has a removable hanger, laundry bag and shoe bag to keep things organized. Its TSA-approved combination lock ensures your goods remain safe, and the spinner wheels and retractable handle make it a breeze to drag it through the airport. Each Delsey bag also comes with a unique tracking plate and code, which helps the brand track your bag if it gets lost during travel.

Material: Polycarbonate | Weight: 9.30 pounds

Briggs & Riley Carry-On Expandable Spinner

Briggs & Riley Carry-On Expandable Spinner

Briggs & Riley Carry-On Expandable Spinner

Briggs & Riley is another favorite brand of Select managing editor Leah Ginsberg, who loves it for its durable, long-lasting products. Ginsberg has been using her carry-on bag for over eight years and claims it’s still in “pristine condition.” This carry-on suitcase can be expanded by simply pressing a button and pulling the sides up, according to the brand. It also has a built-in garment folder, allowing you to store a suit or two to prevent wrinkles on long journeys. There are two mesh lid pockets, so you can store any last-minute snacks, documents or devices. If you want to personalize this suitcase, you can add your initials at no extra cost.

Baboon To The Moon Go Bag

Baboon To The Moon Go Bag

Baboon To The Moon makes bright-colored bags with whimsical prints and patterns and is a favorite brand of both editorial director Lauren Swanson and Select page Mikhaila Archer. We recommend the small Go Bag, which can hold enough for three to five days. Each bag is waterproof, lockable and has multiple external pockets for storage. The straps are adjustable too and there are handles as well if you don’t feel like slinging this duffel across your shoulder.

Material: Polyester, jacquard | Weight: 3.5 pounds

Calpak Hue Carry-On Luggage

Calpak Hue Carry-On Luggage

Calpak makes a variety of lightweight luggage, including this carry-on spinner bag. “This bag has been on several international trips with me and it still looks brand new,” says NBC Select contributor Bethany Heitman. “It’s lightweight, fits enough for a week away and I love that it comes in various fun colors.” The bag has a TSA-approved lock and is expandable to give you two extra inches. One the inside, one side has straps to keep your things in place and the other has a zippered closure. The telescope handle can also be set at different heights to make it comfortable for people of varying statures.

Material: Polycarbonate | Weight: 7.5 pounds

Beis Weekender

Beis Weekender Bag

Beis Weekender Bag

This weekender bag from Beis is a popular pick with our staffers. “It changed my life — it’s the only weekender I can truly rely on for trips, and it sparks joy when I use it,” says NBC Select associate updates editor Zoe Malin , who likes that it has a bottom compartment to keep shoes separate: “I always travel with my running sneakers, and having that dedicated compartment for them keeps their dirty soles away from my clean clothes.” This compartment is also removable, so you can convert it to a minimalist tote. The bag has multiple interior pockets and a removable padded laptop sleeve. In addition to black, other available colors include beige , grey and atlas pink . The brand also offers a mini version .

How to shop for the best lightweight luggage

We consulted experts about what features to consider when shopping. They recommend keeping the following in mind:

  • 360-degree spinner wheels: According to Nguyen, luggage with wheels that can move in any direction is easier to maneuver. This is especially important when you’re rushing at the airport and need your carry-on to keep up with you.
  • Material: Both Good and Nguyen prefer hard shell luggage, which is more scratch-resistant and durable. “Having a hard shell [suitcase] makes it easier to clean and less likely to break when the airlines decide to throw your bags around,” says Nguyen.
  • Handles: Retractable handles that glide smoothly when adjusted are a must for any luggage. A wide or grippy handle also makes it easier to drag your suitcase around.
  • TSA-approved Locks: According to experts, this is especially important for checked-in luggage. It keeps your belongings safe and saves you the trouble of buying an additional lock for your suitcase.

Summer Travel 2024: Record Air Travel, Fewer Cancellations, Better Airports, More Passenger Protections

Year-to-date flight cancellation rate is just 1.4% during a record-breaking summer travel season

WASHINGTON – Despite record-breaking levels of air travel this year, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) numbers show that the flight cancellation rate for the first half of 2024 was just 1.4% – nearly the lowest rate in over a decade. The latest data from airlines reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation shows that weather continues to be the leading cause of flight cancellations.

Percent of Scheduled Flights Cancelled from 2015 to 2024

On June 23, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened more than 2.99 million individuals in a single day at U.S. airports – the most airline passengers the agency has screened in its history. TSA expects to screen more than 32 million individuals this Independence Day travel season, which is a 5.4% increase over last year. At the same time, airfares are down 6% over the last year and below pre-pandemic prices.

“This year’s record-breaking air travel is another good sign for our economy as more Americans take to the skies than ever before,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “To help avoid travel headaches, the Biden-Harris Administration has taken historic action to modernize airports and expand passenger protections for a smoother travel experience.”

President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests $25 billion in U.S. airport infrastructure over five years. This unprecedented investment is not only improving runways and air traffic control towers but also adding gates and adding flight capacity, modernizing baggage systems, replacing passenger boarding bridges, reconfiguring security screening areas, improving safety, and more to finally deliver world-class airports in the U.S. and meet anticipated demand in the decades to come. Just this week, the Federal Aviation Administration announced $289 million in airport infrastructure grants in 40 states and an additional $1 billion in available funding to modernize airport terminals. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, nearly 200 terminal projects are already under construction to modernize America’s airports and make air travel safer and smoother.

The Biden-Harris Administration has taken historic action to improve airline passenger rights and oversight of the airline industry:

  • The rule makes clear that airline passengers are entitled to a refund when their flight is canceled or significantly changed and they no longer wish to take that flight or be rebooked, when their checked baggage is significantly delayed, or when extra services they paid for – like Wi-Fi – are not provided. The rule also requires refunds to be automatic, prompt, in the original form of payment, and in the full amount paid. Airlines must comply with the rule by late October.
  • Provisions of the final rule on airline refunds were fortified through the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 that President Biden signed into law on May 16, 2024.
  • The rule creates a more competitive airline market by requiring airlines to disclose critical extra fees – like change fees and baggage fees – upfront to ensure consumers can better understand the true cost of air travel. The rule also bans “bait-and-switch” advertising tactics and requires airlines to clearly tell passengers upfront that a seat is included with the cost of their ticket. This rule is expected to save consumers over half a billion dollars every year.
  • Launched the flightrights.gov dashboard, after which all 10 major U.S. airlines guaranteed free rebooking and meals when an airline issue causes a significant delay or cancellation. These are new commitments the airlines added to their customer service plans that DOT can legally ensure they adhere to through enforcement action.
  • Secured nearly $4 billion in refunds and reimbursements owed to airline passengers – including over $600 million to passengers affected by the Southwest Airlines holiday meltdown in 2022.
  • Issued nearly $170 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations since President Biden took office. In comparison, between 1996 and 2020, DOT collectively issued less than $71 million in penalties against airlines for consumer protection violations.
  • Set up a system to expand the Department’s capacity to review air travel service complaints by partnering with a bipartisan group of state attorneys general , which will help hold airlines accountable and protect the rights of the traveling public.

When you're going on a trip, packing your bags scratches a very specific mental itch. Do you like breezing to your gate with only minutes to spare, bypassing the checked-baggage line and sweeping through the Global Entry prescreened traveler security lane? Are you on a business trip and bringing makeup and camera-ready clothes? Or are you traveling with small children and struggling to keep track of all their stuffies, snacks, grandparent gifts, and innumerable electronics cords for tiny headphones and remote-controlled sharks?

In the past year, I've flown and driven thousands of miles. I've hopped on quick flights for work, struggled through cross-country travel with my spouse and kids, and cinched duffel bags on the rooftop rack of my car for weekend trips. The WIRED Gear team and I have taken all these bags on at least two flights minimum, overstuffed them, checked them, shoved them into overhead bins, hastily unpacked and repacked them in car trunks and on airport floors, and most importantly, let our children ride on them from baggage claim to the Uber. Whether you're slinging a duffel into a car trunk for a weekend trip or packing for a whirlwind jaunt across Asia, we've got you covered. Need a bag for your passport or groceries? Don't forget to check out our other guides, like the Best Laptop Backpacks , Best Laptop Totes , and the Best Recycled Bags , for more picks.

Updated July 2024: We added the Rimowa carry on, the Beis carry on, the Tumi Velocity backpack, the Lojel Cubo Large, the Aer carry on, the State Logan carry on, and the Calpak medium checked luggage. We also updated the information on sizing and checked links and prices.

The Best Carry-On for Most People

Away's business practices may have raised some eyebrows , but there's no denying that this company changed the travel market entirely. It has increased in price since we first tested it, but multiple WIRED staffers still use the classic Away hard-shell carry-on ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) as their travel suitcase.

The classic Away carry-on has a light, polycarbonate shell, so there's not as much give in the case. However, hardshell suitcases look a lot sleeker than their soft-shell counterparts and protect fragile items better. The Away weighs 7.5 pounds, which is pretty standard for a hard-shell carry-on. When I tested it, I liked that it had multiple height settings and that the polycarbonate shell wiped clean and stayed mostly scuff-free (it helped that my tester was in the darker navy color). Away's suitcases also come with a built-in TSA-approved combination lock, four spinner wheels capable of rotating 360 degrees, and an included laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate from the rest of your stuff. The handle did feel a bit wobbly, though.

★ Alternatives: We've tried similar suitcases by Monos ($255) and July ($295) . July's aluminum bumpers protect fragile belongings, but they do add weight. The Monos's handle rolls out more smoothly, but the July's pebbled surface doesn't show scuffs as badly. I have checked both of these suitcases multiple times on multiple cross-country trips, and both have also been ridden by two small children with no damage.

An Upgraded Carry-On

As the Away's ubiquity shows, it works perfectly well for the vast majority of people. But if you find flying to be as unpleasant an experience as I do, a few upgrades might be worth the expense to make it more endurable. We think two recent luggage launches are worth your attention. Reviewer Nena Farrell loves the viral Beis carry-on , which, in addition to coming in a variety of cute, distinctive colors, has extras like a cushy handle, a built-in weight gauge, and a retractable strap that lets you clip a backpack or duffel to the front, in case your personal item doesn't have a pass-through.

I also recently tested Aer’s latest luggage launch. I like Aer’s better than Beis' for a few reasons. The design is sleeker, without ridges to attract scratches and dirt. Although I rolled and spun it side by side with Calpak, July, and Monos luggage, I did not find that Aer's Hinamoto ball bearing system rolled more quietly or smoothly. However, Aer's carry-on has wheel locks. This was crucial when I found myself in the luggage section of a rental shuttle, trying to manage four four-wheeled suitcases on an overcrowded ride from the airport to the rental car outpost while my spouse and children relaxed in the last three remaining seats. As someone who tends to just toss an AirTag into the shoe pocket of their luggage, where it accidentally falls out halfway across the world, I also like the tiny dedicated AirTag pocket.

★ Alternative: If sustainability is your bag (haha), Paravel offers an Aviator carry-on ($425) that touts itself as the world's first carbon-neutral carry-on; it has an interior lining made of recycled plastic bottles, a telescoping handle made of recycled aluminum, and vegan leather trim to help it stand out from all the plain black bags at the airport. Reviewer Jaina Grey fell in love with its roomy interior and durable, anti-scuff hard-shell exterior.

Best Budget Carry-On

Look around any airport—if you see flight attendants or pilots, they will probably be rolling around a Travelpro suitcase. We like Travelpros because you get a lot of bang for your buck. They're durable, light, and not too expensive.

For only a little over $100, the Maxlite 5 is one of the more affordable Travelpro suitcases, and at 5.4 pounds, it's very light! The exterior toiletry pocket is a nice touch for when you go through security and need to take out your liquids, and the zippers are also quite strong and don't tend to get stuck. The wheels also rolled nicely on both the spinner and roll-aboard versions. Reviewer Matt Jancer did note that the aluminum handle extensions did sometimes stick and the main grab handle on the bag is only single-stitched, which may cause durability issues farther down the line. However, he has seen no issues yet. This probably the best bag you can get in the $100 to $150 price range.

Best Aluminum Bag

The publicist who sent me the iconic Rimowa carry-on for testing warned me that it had been used for promotional photos and might have "some minor patina." This comment was offered with mild apology which I assured her was unnecessary; getting a Rimowa with a few scratches and dings is like buying a preseasoned cast iron pan. Rimowa cases have a cult following among travelers precisely because of how elegantly they wear their miles. The whole point of these nearly indestructible anodized aluminum boxes is to batter them in Bali, scrape them up in Sicily, then cover the wounds in stickers. In fact, a vintage Rimowa with dings and vintage stickers will probably cost you more on eBay than new, though it's more fun to make every dent yourself. I tested the bag on a trip to New York and appreciated the fine-tuned details in construction (the seal is tight enough I had no qualms about it sitting on a rainy tarmac) and, especially, the uncommon confidence and balance of the roller wheels. The Rimowa feels indestructible, and every attempt to break it only improves that patina, which makes it an ideal travel companion. —Martin Cizmar

Best Checked Bag

For a large checked bag, Lojel's Cubo Large has one feature that was invaluable. It has a flat-top opening, which means you can open it like a box, instead of swinging out both sides like a clamshell. I could not believe how much easier this made it to access all of our stuff. On a recent family vacation, I checked the Cubo Large, put it in the trunk of a Chrysler Pacifica, drove to my brother's house, drove to the beach, and kept four peoples' items organized in one hotel room for a week. I could open the suitcase and grab my kid's sandals without pulling the whole suitcase out of the trunk. Once we got to our destination, it took up half as much floor space as any other suitcase. When it weighed about a pound over the checked bag weight limits, I could discreetly unzip it and take out my Chacos without opening a clamshell and displaying all my belongings for all of United's employees to see.

Granted, the stitching on the interior organizational pockets is not so solid for the price. My kids almost instantly busted the button that holds the lid up. Also, a 10-year warranty sounds good, but almost every other manufacturer offers a limited lifetime warranty that covers common problems, like broken zippers. However, this flat-top opening is a great feature that's worth recommending, especially if you have large, awkward items that wouldn't fit in one side of a clamshell suitcase.

★ Alternative: On this trip, I also checked the Calpak Evry Medium Luggage ($245) , and it did the job for half the price. It has a polycarbonate shell, interior organizational pockets, and a TSA-approved lock.

Black backpack with matte surface propped up on mesh lawn chair

Best Backpack

Tumi’s iconic, expensive backpacks are the platonic ideal for airplane travel. The latest one is the Velocity, which is a collaboration with McLaren Automotive, and the sleek design is meant to evoke the aerodynamic lines of McLaren's racing cars. The shell is made from CX6, a type of woven carbon fiber that is engineered to be both super strong and incredibly light. This means that the bag has a firm structure that doesn't look saggy when it's empty, or stuffed like a turkey when it's full. It can fit a surprising amount of stuff—just unzip the front panel and it swings open like a glove compartment.

Like a lot of Tumi's backpacks, it comes with a bunch of travel-related extras, like a luggage tag, an add-a-bag sleeve, and a luggage-inspired leather grip handle. The padded laptop compartment fits laptops up to 15 inches (although surprisingly, the compartment is not suspended, so be careful putting it down). I filled it full of books and dragged it on our concrete walk, and I still couldn't scratch the surface. In keeping with the bag's slim profile, however, the water bottle pockets are extremely tight. It's also a little embarrassing flying with a $1,600 backpack in economy. Tumi has a wide array of equally attractive and useful laptop backpacks for less than half the price.

Rolling luggage with heartshaped strawberry pattern in front of a wooden bookshelf of children's books

Best Kids Suitcase

For the past two years, I've found myself being the lone parent while flying with my two children, now 7 and 9. Unfortunately, trying to cheap out on my kids' suitcases has resulted in a garage full of dead luggage. My children busted the zippers on this generic rolling backpack off Amazon (which was much cheaper than when I bought it) almost instantly. The Target version is only 6 pounds and very cute, but the plastic shell and hardware is as fragile as a bird egg.

I would've saved so much time, aggravation, and money if I'd just bought them both State bags at the start. The Logan comes in a mini, carry-on, and checked size, and the carry-on has more or less the same dimensions as my carry-on. However, it has a number of child-friendly features. The prints are amazing; my kids love theirs. The front pocket is big enough for a snack box and their iPads, which means I can quickly usher them to their seats and unpack everything into the front pocket. There are two straps on the side that are ideal for tucking in Yellow Blanky and Truck Blanky when we have to move quickly at the gate. And it still weighs less than my own carry-on.

Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 bag

Best Convertible Bag

Every serious traveler knows the name of Seattle-based Tom Bihn, manufacturer of bomber bags that will last you a lifetime. The Aeronaut 45 is the classic Tom Bihn convertible carry-on, which the size of the maximum allowable carryon bag on a plane.

You get everything from a Tom Bihn bag that you pay for. It’s made of incredibly sturdy 1050 denier ballistic nylon, with bombproof YKK zippers. It has both hidden backpack straps and an extremely comfortable cross-body strap. This is commerce director Martin Cizmar's bag, and he's tossed it around and lugged it down rough streets and through crowds where roller bags are a liability. He owns two and the first lasted for more than a decade. This is the bag that both he and I would use, if we didn't have to constantly test other bags.

Briggs Riley Baseline luggage

Best Lifetime Bag

Do you only want to buy one suitcase and never think about it, ever again? Briggs & Riley is one of the few companies with a lifetime unlimited warranty. I bought a Briggs & Riley carry-on as my first and only post-college purchase. Right now, it has lasted over 20 years. Periodically, I bring it into the one Briggs & Riley-approved dealership in my town to get a zipper pull put back on, and it's fixed for free in a few days. Its components are top-of-the-line. The face fabric is a heavy-duty ballistic nylon that’s water-repellent and abrasion-resistant. After having been dragged all over the globe, from the Philippines to Turkey to Iceland, the gleaming red is just as bright. The low-profile wheels nor handles have never broken. The grab handles are also luxuriously smooth and padded, and there's an interior folding garment bag for my husband's suits. The only downside is that at 9.3 pounds, it’s pretty heavy.

★ Alternatives: If you need an absolutely bomber-tough rolling suitcase and don't mind its 9.6-pound weight, the Pro Front-Access Carry ($799) will stand up to more abuse than most rolling bags, with its aluminum frame and 70-percent-recycled polycarbonate body. WIRED reviewer Chris Haslam says it's his favorite rolling bag in years. Jancer also likes Travelpro's Platinum Elite carry-on ($315) , which he calls one of the most high-end polycarbonate bags on the market.

YETI Crossroads Luggage

Best Soft-Shell Carry-On

Yeti's coolers and cups are famous for being bomb-proof. The company recently launched a luggage line that's similarly overbuilt. The Yeti Crossroads 35L is a 22-inch roller bag that's carry-on size for most major airlines. It weighs 7.7 pounds, on par with soft-sided competitors of the same size.

I recently spent a week dragging the Crossroads up and down grimy subway station escalators, thumping it across cobblestones, and scrunching it into overfull overhead bins during a trip to London, Paris, and Brussels. The blue 700D nylon on the front and sides looks just as fresh as it did out of the box while the molded polycarbonate shell on the back has a few well-earned battle scratches. The two extra-large fixed wheels are rolling as smoothly as ever and hopped up curbs so well that I grew to favor them over smaller spinner wheels. The Crossroads has a half-dozen well-placed pockets and sturdy zippers that didn't give me any anxiety even as I tugged them hard while smooshing down to fit souvenirs into a carry-on with 8 days of clothing. —Martin Cizmar

Lo Sons OG bag

Best Work Bag

The bag that I prefer for my personal item on work trips is the Lo & Sons O.G. 2, which is the larger version of the brand's Nouvelle purse ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). It comes in a medium and a large version; the medium is adequate as an everyday bag, but the large turns it into a versatile work/travel bag. It’s low-profile and has both smooth leather grab handles as well as a shoulder strap. I have kicked it under plane seats and around airports, and the nylon doesn't show any damage. There's a hidden separate compartment if you spill water on yourself, and it has sturdy feet so you can put it on an airplane bathroom counter and dig for your makeup without it falling over or getting the bottom of the bag too disgusting. The toothed zippers do tend to crinkle and snatch at your knuckles when the bag gets overstuffed, but I suppose you could always, uh, avoid overstuffing your bag.

★ Alternatives: We have plenty of recommendations in our guide to the Best Laptop Totes . L.L. Bean's boat tote ($35) is the iconic affordable, durable pick, but gear director Michael Calore's pick is the roomy zip hunter's tote ($55) .

REI CoOp Big Haul 40L duffel bag

Best Duffel Bag

The Big Haul ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is our favorite duffel because it hits the right balance of robust build materials and pockets without being too heavy to lug around all day. The standout feature of the Big Haul series, which comes in 28-liter to 120-liter options, is the ability to easily reposition the carrying straps, which feature plastic fishhook-style ends that slip into fabric loops. You can connect one strap end-to-end or double up on two straps in an H pattern for more stability with heavy loads. Adding and removing the straps isn't super fast, but it's not difficult, either, and six low-profile loops seems less intrusive than six rattling plastic buckles.

Two small interior pockets and an exterior pocket keep small things organized, and its water-resistant fabric is thick and tough without being stiff. All the sewing around the grab handles feels very robust too. Padded backpack straps hide away under a padded pocket on the top of the bag. This means that when you sling the Big Haul over your shoulders to give your arms a rest, your back is against the relatively clean top of the duffel, rather than a wet, dirty bottom side that's been set down on the ground. The current iteration of the Big Haul is also made with recycled nylon. What's not to love? —Matt Jancer

★ Alternative: For slightly more money, the classic duffel in this category is the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel ($159) , which also comes in a variety of colorways and sizes. You can either carry it by the grab handles or with the shoulder straps, and it's made from 100 percent recycled polyester with a TPU-film laminate. I (Adrienne) have had the 40-liter version for almost 15 years now and the laminate has yet to peel. It also fits as a carry-on on flights.

Duffels are a huge and ever-expanding category. We also like durable Red Oxx duffels ($300) , and if you've ever gone to a popular outdoor destination, like Yosemite or Everest, you've probably seen stacks of North Face Base Camp duffels . This is the quintessential expedition bag. My own personal bag is the OnSight Tarmac EPO , but the company no longer exists.

Rux 70L storage box

Best for Camping

We love everything from Rux; I'm currently testing the waterproof adventure tote ($150) and I use it for everything from my climbing gear, to picnic gear, to bringing my kids' roller skates and soccer balls to the park. I have also leaked an entire water bottle in it and it stayed contained and out of the bottom of my car.

But for camping (or any outdoor pursuit, really), what you need is a Rux storage system , which, as the artist and filmmaker Van Neistat puts it, will help you kit your shit . It holds its frame shape, which means you can stack and organize inside of it just like a box, but it folds down like a bag for easy storage once you're at your destination. It's also light and waterproof and comes with a wide array of accessories . This is an upgrade for everyone who currently sorts their camping, climbing, or snowboarding gear in a series of $5 plastic totes and stacks them in their trunk.

Luka Duffel Bag

A Good Emergency Go Bag

To be clear, any bag here could be considered a go-bag—even a grocery bag works when you have to leave the house imminently. But reviewer Nena Farrell used Calpak's duffel for an emergency surgery, and she is kicking herself for not getting it sooner. It was big enough for everything from makeup bags and extra outfits to a massive book and Nintendo Switch, and was comfortable to carry thanks to the large straps.

The shoe compartment was big enough for sandals and slides, but not big enough for shoes with an ankle. It was also a great place to stash haphazard Ziplocs of emergency toiletries and medications. There are some side pockets inside too, plus an exterior side pocket and a pass-through panel to place it on top of your luggage. It was a great hospital companion, but Farrell can't wait to take the Luka somewhere a little more fun.

Solgaard CarryOn Closet Plus luggage

Other Bags We Like

Not every good product can snag a best-in-category title, but there are several more bags we've tested that get our thumbs-up.

Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On for $200 : This is a hard-side, four-wheeled spinner carry-on made from an outer shell of durable polypropylene. Standout features include an interior fabric made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles and a “WetPak” storage pocket for keeping damp items separated from the rest of your luggage.

Osprey Ozone 40L for $280 : At 4.47 pounds, Osprey claims this bag is the lightest carry-on suitcase. It's also made from 400D recycled bluesign-approved nylon and is treated with DWR. This bag is light enough to easily hoist above my head and has also been checked multiple times.

Gregory Alpaca 40 Duffel for $140 : This duffel weighs a scant 2.7 pounds, but the water-resistant fabric and extraordinarily beefy (though plastic) buckles make it a solid bag for adventuring. There's an exterior pocket for storing shoes or dirty clothes. The backpack straps don't tuck away for storage—you have to unclip them—but might be the most well-padded, comfortable straps I've encountered on a duffel. Exterior daisy chains and an interior zippered pocket round out the impressive features list.

Land's End Waxed Canvas Duffel for $180 : Most duffel bags these days are made of nylon, and while it's tough to call a material that's been popular since the 1940s “modern,” nylon bags don't have the old-school charm that this waxed canvas bag does.

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L for $107 : This bag weighs 1 pound, 13 ounces, which is only slightly heavier than air. It also has backpack straps that stow away in a front pocket.

Skyway Epic Carry-On for $80 : At 7.1 pounds, the Epic is an average weight. The handle is a wee bit more finicky than our top pick, and the Travelpro's wheels glide a little more nicely. Still, the Epic is a solid choice.

Target Signature Weekender Bag for $81 : Looking like a cross between a duffel and a handbag, the Weekender has a structure that product reviewer Louryn Strampe says can become overfilled, so keep that in mind if you plan to bring it onto a plane as a carry-on. She appreciates its durability and the many internal pockets for organization, though, and its rather long five-year warranty.

Solgaard Carry-On Closet Plus for $275 : It's a tiny bit over what most airlines list as the maximum dimensions, but the difference is so small that it's accepted 95 percent of the time. WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe praises its optional clip-in closet clothing organizer, which makes for efficient packing. The built-in TSA lock is easy to use, and there's an internal power-bank pocket. This suitcase is included in our Favorite Recycled Products guide.

Eagle Creek Caldera Convertible Backpack

Bags We Don’t Like

Some bags just aren't worth the asking price, especially with so many good alternatives at all price points.

Eagle Creek Caldera Convertible International Carry-On for $469 : At 6 pounds, 2 ounces, this bag is a bit heavy. There's a zip-off 19-liter backpack that you can separate from the rest of the 37-liter bag, but when they're zipped together, the combined size doesn't meet carry-on restrictions.

How to Pick a Bag

Nowadays, there are so many baggage options that narrowing down which bag you need can be difficult. Here are a few factors that might make a difference:

  • Two or four wheels? Very few people who try the maneuverability of a four-wheeled spinner suitcase want to go back. Four-wheeled spinners are so much easier to maneuver in crowded airports or down airplane aisles. However, two wheels are easier if you're pulling it over rough terrain. Also, they don't roll away.
  • Hard-shell or soft-sided? Fabric bags tend to be lighter. They're also more flexible, so they can squish down to fit tighter overhead bins or stretch to accommodate that souvenir sweatshirt that you couldn't resist. A hard-shell suitcase provides more protection, but has no give. If you travel with a lot of fragile items, consider an aluminum suitcase, which offers the most protection of all.
  • Use a tape measure and a scale. Whether your bag fits in the overhead bin increasingly depends on both where you're flying (domestic or international) and what airline you choose. Always check the airline's weight and dimension requirements before packing your bag.

A Few Travel Accessories

If you're packing a bag, a few of these items are helpful.

Craftsman Measuring Tape for $14 : Always measure the dimensions of your bag! There's nothing worse than trying to walk on a plane and having to get out line because the gate attendant decided your bag was too big.

Samsonite Manual Luggage Scale for $15 : Weigh your bag before you leave the house, too. International airlines are sticklers for carry-on weight, and even American airlines will be unforgiving about weight for checked bags.

Apple AirTag for $24 : Drop an AirTag into an interior pocket to make sure you and your luggage are reunited at your destination. Don't have an iPhone? We suggest the Chipolo in our guide to the Best Bluetooth Trackers .

Eagle Creek Specter Pack-It Cubes Three-Pack for $35 : Keep everything inside your bags organized by separating it into different cubes. You shouldn't have to hunt through a pile of socks to find your bathing suit.

Calpak Clear Cosmetics Case for $75 : Calpak’s viral clear cases come in three sizes and a ton of colors for the edge trims. Reviewer Nena Farrell loved the small size for my gym bag and traveling with a smaller carry-on bag, while the medium was a great size for my daily makeup or larger suitcases.

Troubadour Buddy 2.0 Tech Case for $75 : You probably need a case to organize your spare charging cables and power banks. I've been testing this compact, waterproof, and recycled bag that fits neatly into my personal item.

UrPower Portable Steamer for $24 beats a travel iron because it's far lighter and you don't need to hunt down an ironing board at your hotel. WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano and I both have been using UrPowers for years. For a tiny thing, it's powerful and effective at steaming practically anything. You just need to refill it often.

InCase MacBook Sleeves for $50 will keep your laptop from bearing the damage caused by airport security lines. Travel through an airport without a case and it's only a matter of time before a bare laptop or tablet picks up nasty scratches and dents. Check our guide to the Best MacBook Accessories for more.

Fourth of July travel period kicks off at SEA

beis travel tsa lock

SEATTLE - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for high passenger volumes during the Fourth of July travel period at airports nationwide including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). With single day records being set recently for the number of passenger screened at airports nationwide, TSA is advising air travelers to arrive at the airport early and prepared for every step of the travel process.

TSA nationally expects to screen more than 28 million people between Friday, June 28 through Monday, July 8. This is a 5.4% increase over 2023 Independence Day holiday travel volumes. Locally, TSA projects it will screen more than 725,000 people at SEA during the same 11-day period.

TSA anticipates the peak travel day will be Sunday, July 7, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals at 434 airports. Locally, TSA at SEA expects to screen nearly 74,000 people today, making it perhaps the busiest day of the Fourth of July holiday travel period and potentially the busiest day ever at for TSA locally. TSA staffs to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck® lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes.

High travel volumes and busy security checkpoints have become the norm lately. Twelve of the agencies Top 15 busiest travel days nationally have occurred since mid-May.

At SEA, TSA had its second and third busiest days ever in the past week. On Sunday, June 23, 2024, TSA at SEA screened more than 72,900 people, which ranks second overall; on Friday, June 21, 2024, TSA at SEA had its third busiest day ever when more than 72,700 people were screened.

The busiest times at the SEA checkpoints daily are 5 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The single busiest hour for TSA at SEA is 9 a.m., which is the time when those departing on the late morning flights are coming through the security checkpoint.

The busiest days of the week at SEA during the summer months are Thursdays through Mondays. Regardless of your flight departure time or day of the week, this summer all travelers - no matter at what airport - will need to arrive early and prepared for every step of the air travel experience.

“We have been anticipating the arrival of the Fourth of July travel period and planning our security operations to ensure that we are prepared for the surge in travelers who will be coming to the airport. TSA officers will be on the job to ensure travelers have a smooth trip through SEA,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Washington Greg Hawko. “We are asking travelers to be good partners with TSA and ensure that they are prepared for the screening process. Please don’t bring prohibited items in your carry-on luggage and allow plenty of time for every step of the travel process. We look forward to making good on our plans to deliver top notch security in the most efficient manner.”

Final advice from TSA Here are some tips to help all travelers have a smooth trip through the security checkpoint at any airport:

Arrive at the airport early and prepared. Allow ample time to park, navigate to the terminal, check luggage and proceed through the TSA security screening checkpoint. Keep in mind that most flights board 30 - 45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Be prepared for any scenario. In the security checkpoint, have your photo identification and boarding pass ready. This will keep you from slowing down the screening process for you and everyone behind you. Listen to directions provided by TSA officers. The advisements are specific to the type of screening you will experience. The information given will make your screening experience quicker and smoother. Pack smart. Always start with an empty bag to ensure you don’t inadvertently bring prohibited items to the security checkpoint. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily accessed if you are required to remove them. Also, be sure that all liquids are 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if transporting them through the security checkpoint. Get assistance prior to traveling . Ensure that carry-ons do not contain prohibited items since they slow down the security screening process. To determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage, download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature. Another option is to snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Travelers can also send a question by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872). ###
