Black Series has a wide range of rugged off-roaders, but the HQ17 does well to balance cost with performance. At 24ft in length, the HQ17 is the smallest model with four wheels, with room for two spare 265/75 R16 Good Ride M/T tires on the back. The minimum ground clearance on this trailer is almost 12” and the armored chassis makes it easier to cross higher water levels. Likewise, the two pairs of independent suspension systems are designed to match the movement of the vehicle in front. For luxurious living, you’ll find space for five people to sleep comfortably inside, as well as a bathroom and a sizable kitchen.

The Best Ways to Camp in Style

Camper trailers have existed since the end of World War II. The recreation community has enjoyed traveling across the United States and the world with their camping trailers as an alternative to an RV, with the flexibility of visiting numerous parks and campgrounds.

Those travelers have recently ventured farther and farther away from the well-traveled roadways and interstates. The invention of the off-road camper has allowed them to more easily explore Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, the American West, the Australian Outback and more.

We examined sleeping capacity, length, width and dry weight as guidelines in your search for one of these travel trailers. We use a family of four (two adults, two kids) as our standard family for this exercise.

Taxa Inc. |

Taxa Outdoors Mantis Overland

The Taxa Outdoors Mantis is one of our favorite camping trailers. This camping trailer features a Timbren axle-less off-road suspension that raises the Mantis’ ground clearance to 14-inches. The Mantis Overland also features a 20-gallon freshwater tank (and a 22-gallon gray water tank), wet bath, full galley kitchen and a Truma furnace/hot water system. 

Primary features include an extendable roof, a rear hatch for access and ventilation, LED exterior lighting, six acrylic and insulated windows with screens and shades, rear ladder steps to roof storage, and two storage towers with a trio of milk crate drawers. There's also a 12V refrigerator platform, full-size bed with under bed storage (21 cubic feet), 12V USB outlets, Victron 75/15 SmartSolar Bluetooth Charge Controller and an 8,000 BTU Air Conditioner (115V).

Bean Trailers Meaner Bean

Bean Trailers’ Meaner Bean has a ground clearance of 17-inches, a Timbren independent suspension system, and Armadillo coated stand-on fiberglass fenders. Rock sliders are optional. The roofline has a lifetime warranty against leaks where the endcap ends and the roof begins. 

The interior cabin has enough space for a queen-sized 4.25-inch mattress. The cabin also includes RGB strip lighting with a touch controller. The sleeping space converts into a couch and table setup. There is a bunk option for small children and dogs, and the bunk can be used for extra storage space.

The rear hatch opens and includes a rack-out Partner Steel stove with the premium plus galley, a powder-coated cooler/fridge rack out that can accommodate a 45 QT cooler and a stainless steel sink with a foldaway faucet.

There is an 18-gallon freshwater tank, and the Meaner Bean can also be attached to shore power. Optional Thule crossbars can accommodate a rooftop tent to expand sleeping accommodations.

Airstream |

Airstream Basecamp 16X

The premier name in camping trailers has always been Airstream. The Basecamp X is Airstream’s entry into the more rugged camping trailer segment. The Basecamp 16X features Airstream’s classic riveted aluminum superstructure, a panoramic front window, a 3-inch lift kit, and two benches that convert into a bed. The complete bed measures 76-inches by 76-inches.

The Basecamp 16X features a rear access door, solar front window protection, stainless steel front stone guards, an increased departure angle, Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires, a 21-gallon freshwater tank and a liquid petroleum low-pressure grill port.

Other features include an outdoor shower, multiple charging stations (both USB and 110V), an air conditioner, heat, and hot water. The Basecamp 16X is also pre-wired for solar power. In addition, an optional tent can be attached to the Basecamp to expand the living and storage space.

Opus Campers OP4

The Opus Camper OP4 is a variation on the camper trailer. The OP4 is a popup camper that utilizes air beam technology to create 8-feet of headroom. The ends of the tent fold out to create two double beds, and the U-shaped dinette can be converted into another double bed as well.

Interior options include a Dometic Coolcat AC & Heat Pump (10,000 BTU), a Dometic Propane Furnace (16,000 BTU), an Opus cinema system, rack-mounted hot water shower, and upgraded LED lighting with dimmer switches.

The off-road prowess of the Opus is from dual axle trailing arm suspension with dual coil shock absorbers, galvanized steel chassis and rock guard, electric brakes, 7-pin-plug, an E-brake, and an articulating hitch (DO35 or Lock'n'Roll).

The OP4 features an outdoor galley with a 12V ARB 63 QT fridge/freezer, four-burner stainless steel slide-out stove, stainless steel wind guards and chopping board, dish rack, LED exterior lights, and a sink with on-demand hot water.

Overkill Campers S.O.5.10

The Overkill Campers S.O.5.10 features a hard-sided camper trailer with a pop-top roof and a slide-out. This trailer is more compact and utilizes a 5-foot by 10-foot footprint. That’s where Overkill gets the model name from: S.O. stands for slide-out, and the 5.10 represents the trailer's dimensions.

With the slide-out open, this trailer can accommodate a queen-size 4-inch high resilience foam compact camper mattress and a 48-inch settee. The settee transforms into a toddler/dog bed. The pop-top option allows for more interior headspace as well. The interior also includes a multi-position table, a storage drawer under the bed, and numerous storage cabinets above the bed and at the rear galley.

The S.O.5.10 features a 32-gallon freshwater tank, a water pump and accumulator, and pre-installed water and propane hardlines. A Relion 200ah lithium battery powers the trailer, a Victron Multi Plus 13K inverter/charger, a Switch-Pros SP-9100 8-switch panel power system, and a 170-watt solar panel fixed on the roof. It also features a porch light, dimmable interior lighting, and dimmable LED lights in the rear hatch.

An exterior slide-out galley includes a four-burner stove, sink, and prep area.

OPUS Camper USA |

Opus Campers OP15

The Opus Camper OP15 is more of an off-grid trailer that features a hybrid camping experience. The fiberglass-sided camping trailer features a soft-sided pop-top that extends the interior height to 6-feet-6-inches. In addition, there is a slide-out that provides space for a king bed. Also included are twin bunks.

The Off-Grid equipment includes three 100ah AGM batteries, a 300-watt solar panel setup, two freshwater tanks (63 total gallons), a 17-gallon grey water tank, a 10-gallon black water tank, utility storage with 6-gallon jerry can holders, and 20-pound gas bottle holders. There is a Lock’n’Roll articulating hitch with 360-degree rotation for flexible towing, independent trailing arm coil suspension with dual shock absorbers, a fully galvanized and welded chassis and drawbar, along with the stone guard and underbody anti-chip protection, and four drop-down heavy-duty stabilizer legs and Fulton tongue jack wheel.

The OP15 features an outdoor galley with a four-burner stainless steel slide-out stove, 12V fridge/freezer combo, stainless steel wind guards, chopping board, and prep deck.

Bruder EXP-6

Bruder has become well known in the off-road camper trailer world because their amazing Australian trailers feature active suspension. These trailers provide unrivaled off-road performance in the most challenging of conditions.

The interior includes a queen-sized bed with LED strip lighting and electrical charging ports. The kitchen has a portable induction cooktop, a filtered water outlet, a stainless kitchen sink with hot and cold water, a drop-down table, an external 60L fridge/freezer on a slide-out, and orange/white LED strip lighting. The EXP-6 also has an available pop-top for added interior headspace.

Kimberley Kampers Kruiser S-Class

The Kruiser S-Class contains a queen bed with two bunk beds. Around the queen bed is two wardrobes, under-bed drawers, and overhead cupboards for storage. This trailer includes a full-size shower, toilet, vanity, and mirrored shower doors. Diesel-powered hot water and air heating mean that there is no internal propane gas. 

There is no wood included in this trailer to break down over time. The composite construction ensures light weight and strength. The exterior galley includes an induction cooktop that achieves a boil in three minutes.

Black Series HQ12

The HQ12 is equipped with an outdoor kitchen and wet bath. This off-grid camper includes a queen bed and a convertible lounge. The wet bath is a full fiberglass shower with a toilet. An outdoor shower is also available. The HQ12 is equipped with a 63.4-gallon freshwater tank.

The kitchen includes a propane stove, a stainless steel slide-out sink, a microwave, and a 2.6 cubic foot fridge/freezer. Over the kitchen is a three-meter electric awning. 

The furnace is a 16,000 BTU with thermostat control. The optional air conditioning unit is a 13,500 BTU rooftop unit. Four 150-watt solar panels can be mounted to the roof. Interior lighting is LED in the bedroom and the lounge.

Off Grid Trailers LP |

Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0

The Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 has an impressive 21-inches of ground clearance. This expedition-style trailer contains a queen-size mattress, a 31-gallon freshwater tank, an Eccotemp L5 Hot Water on-demand with an outside shower attachment, and a rear exterior galley. The Expedition 2.0 also has the ability to include a rooftop tent above.

The kitchen galley located on the back of the trailer features a stainless steel countertop surface, a Dometic stainless steel dual burner stove, an OGT Custom stainless steel hot/cold deep sink with a fold-down faucet, and a 55L fridge/freezer on integrated slides.

The front of the camper includes a gear locker and both sides of the trailer have aluminum storage boxes. Power is supplied from two 12V Group 31 deep cycle batteries. Shore power is provided from a dual bank Smart Shore Power Charger with a Zamp Solar Ready Port. 

Options include a custom-designed wrap, exterior Bluetooth stereo system, a 24-inch smart LED TV, the bed upgrade includes the conversion to a couch, a 360-degree Maxcoupler Hitch, XO jack, a 6,500 BTU furnace, Maxxfan Deluxe 7500 fan, privacy door shades, and an additional lighting package.

True innovation has been tough to come by in the lightweight, shell-style truck camper market lately, but that changed when Denver-based Tune Outdoors launched its Tune M1 in 2023.

Instead of releasing just another wedge camper or traditional slide-in, Tune combined some of the best existing features on the market, like building with aluminum extrusions and honeycomb composite panels, and added its own twist: The Tune M1 rests on a truck’s bed rails, but the side walls flare out at the bottom to provide far more interior living space than anything else out there. That extra width also provides more standard sleeping space—in fact, an optional bed extension platform accommodates a nearly king-sized mattress on a short-bed Tacoma.

The Tune M1’s starting price includes features that cost extra at many other brands, like built-in lighting, a 4-inch memory foam mattress, and 440-plus feet of T-Track. All that T-Track means you can bolt nearly anything to the camper, and easily build out the interior if you wish.

Bonus: Side awning panels fully open for gear access. Our favorite option is the tempered glass side panels, which not only look fantastic, but also let more light inside and allow for panoramic views. “The packed-down silhouette is so tight that we never held back on even the burliest roads,” says Aaron Gulley, a longtime Outside contributor and gear tester. “But it has so much popup space that the truck bed felt roomy for two people even with coolers, a generator, and requisite camping gear.”

The perfect cross between a fully featured slide-in and a wedge camper, the Tune M1 is ideal for families who need more space, or anyone who wants a truck camper but also wants to continue using their truck bed for truck things.

Let’s get this out of the way upfront: camper vans are expensive. Fancy, extensive build-outs also render them fairly useless anytime they aren’t being camped in, which, for most folks, is the majority of the time. Enter Adventure Wagon and its modular interior system.

The company offers van conversions for Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Transits that start at just $16,000 and are completely modular, allowing you to switch your camper back to a cargo van in just a few minutes. You can convert the van yourself with the brand’s kit in 4-6 days, or have one of the company’s many installers do it for you.

The modular system also allowed our testers to easily add and take out rear seats, depending on who was using the van. “We love the Adventure Wagon setup so much because of how easy it is to reconfigure to suit the needs of a particular day, trip or activity,” said Corey Leavitt, a Santa Fe-based filmmaker and adventure rig enthusiast who’s rehabbed his truck camper. “I love that I can pull out the seats and bed platform, but leave in the battery and fridge for when I need to haul gear to a shoot, but also want to keep food and drinks on-hand for the crew.”

Best Off-Road Trailer

We’ve followed Pueblo, Colorado-based Boreas Campers closely since it debuted its AT and XT models, both class-leading off-road teardrops, a few years ago. The EOS-12 builds on the solid foundation of those campers and takes everything to a new level—literally.

The EOS-12 is a 20-foot, overland-style pop-up travel trailer built to go anywhere and keep you comfortable off-grid for extended periods of time in any weather conditions. Composite panel construction keeps the rig well insulated and light on its feet with a dry weight of 3,750 pounds.

The trailer features a slim canvas pop top that keeps it aerodynamic, a well-appointed outdoor kitchen, and a full indoor wet bath. With one queen-sized main bed and a dinette that folds out to about a twin sized bed, we found it could sleep three adults comfortably, and appreciated the copious amounts of storage inside.

The EOS-12 really shines when it comes to its mechanical and electrical features. It rides on a Cruisemaster XT—an independent trailing arm suspension with airbags and auto-level, capable of handling much rougher terrain than you’re likely to experience—540 amp hours of Battleborn lithium batteries, Victron electrical components, and 400 watts of solar panels.

Everything on this camper, from the exterior rock lights to the air compressor and the furnace, are operated by a portable Garmin O.N.E. tablet, which, despite our initial hesitation, performed flawlessly.

“We loved using the EOS-12 on a 5-day mule deer hunt,” says Eric Ladd, a mountain biker, hunter, skier, and all-around adventure seeking ER doc based in Santa Fe, NM. “We never worried about where we were towing it, it didn’t come close to running out of power or water, and we ate like kings thanks to the amazing outdoor kitchen—despite being off grid the entire time.”

The reintroduction of the Trade Wind model shows that Airstream is listening to consumers. While the Basecamp models have been marketed towards younger generations looking to get a little further off the beaten path, the Trade Wind is the first of the company’s iconic, silver bullet-shaped travel trailers to come off the factory floor with everything a boondocker needs—and, as it turns out, everything our testers have added to their personal Airstreams.

It comes with a robust solar system, Battleborn lithium batteries, a 3-inch lift kit and all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler Workforce Tires. When you combine the system upgrades with a stellar floor plan that sleeps up to five, gorgeous interior design, and other smart features like a recirculating water heater, optional composting toilet, and an optional rear hatch that lets you easily load bulky gear, it all adds up to an incredible, luxurious, off-grid basecamp.

“We have owned an Airstream for nearly a decade and modified it for heavy, backcountry, boondocking use. The new Trade Wind is everything we always wanted ours to be—and much more,” said Gulley. “This is a rig built to go anywhere and do everything, and to do it in classic Airstream style. We definitely see an upgrade in our near future.”

How to Choose a Camper or Trailer

Buying a camper of any kind is a big investment, so it’s best if you can try one out or at least see one in-person before pulling the trigger. Visiting a dealer is great, but a lot of today’s best rigs are sold direct-to-consumer, which means that events like Overland Expo are a great way to see a camper up close.

Even better, try renting the type of rig that interests you on Outdoorsy to get a real feel for it. Even if they don’t have the specific model you’re looking for, you’ll get an idea of whether you’re a van, trailer, or truck camper person.

What Kind of Camper Should I Buy?

The short answer is, it depends. In general, we think most folks are better served by buying a tow-behind they can pull with their current vehicle. Trailers have more space than a van or truck camper could ever provide, and they don’t have engines, transmissions, and other expensive parts to maintain.

How Much Should I Expect to Spend?

For a new rig, you should budget anywhere from $100-250K for a van, $10-30K for a truck camper (sans truck), and $30-130K for a trailer, depending on your tastes and needs.

How Much Solar Do I Need?

It all depends on how much luxury you want off grid. For most weekenders, around 200-300 watts of solar and 100-200 amp hours of lithium batteries will be more than enough.

13 Best Offroad Travel Trailers and Campers with Bathrooms in 2024

Sometimes you just need to get away, right? And what better way than with the 13 best travel trailers that have it all – equal comfort and ruggedness!  While there are many small travel trailers that come to mind, did you know there are actually base models that are big too? Big families need not be left out!

So let’s have a look at some of the best off-road camper trailers and RVs as well as some of the best options to look for when purchasing one. The common, most known models will be covered as well as some luxury, Earth Roamer types ones too… for fun (they are for off roading and have a bathroom, right?)

After reading this list, it does some Australia knows a thing or two about off roading in campers! Don’t worry though – they often build most of it there and send it here to America for final assembly.

9 Best Travel Trailers With a Toilet and Shower

Let’s start with some normal, pull-behind off-road trailers with a bathroom. I have included some stats for the standard model of each options, as well as helpful features to know such as convertible dinettes, solar panels, bunks, and more.

Here are some travel trailer specific terms to know:

• GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) – This is the max possible weight of your camper with EVERYTHING (including people and water!) It’s nice if your vehicle can pull this and beyond as sometimes you do end up traveling with water.
• Dry Weight / Tare Weight – Also known as Unloaded Vehicle Rate (UVW). Just as it sounds – the weight of an unloaded travel trailer or RV that only includes standard features.
• HW (Hitch Weight) – The amount of weight on the hitch of the trailer – this is important to know when checking that your vehicle and hitch are actually rated to pull the camper you’re looking at.
• Wet Bath – A wet bath is a combination shower and toilet (and sometimes a sink) all in one washroom area.
• Dry Bath – The toilet and sink stay dry in this design, just like at home.
• No Toilet/Cassette Toilet – Uncommon in everything but the most rugged of campers. You’ll be needing to utilize a portable camping toilet of some type. Some do have built in spots atleast.

Opus 15 Off-Road Hybrid

The Opus 15: Small camper that’s rugged, spacious and intelligent design featuring a low profile and a pop up for extra head room

Opus 15 Features:

• Overall Length: 15.0 ft.

The Opus 15 is an almost perfect mix of rugged durability and comfortable luxury. 

It shares a similar style to several of the other off-road trailers on this list. It’s got a low-profile body for easier towing and a pop-up top for additional headroom. Plus, there’s an extendable rear section that adds even more space to the interior. 

The Opus 15 has a really intelligent design that maximizes the use of space and gives the interior a much bigger living area than what you’re used to seeing in trailers this size. 

A lot of that has to do with the fact that there is no kitchen area inside the trailer. Opus decided to create an outdoor kitchen area (with the help of some super cool slideouts) so that the interior living space could be maximized while having space for the bathroom, shower, toilet, and sink.

With a king, two bunk beds and a bathroom, the Opus 15 is the best option for a family on this list!

And with two fresh water tanks with a combined 63-gallon capacity, a 17-gallon grey water tank, and a 10-gallon black water tank, you’re ready for several days off-grid.

Airstream Bambi

The Airstream Bambi: Airstream’s small travel trailer that has it all – convertible dinette, kitchen and restroom in a small package (hence the “Bambi” name!)

Airstream Bambi Features:

• Overall Length: 15 – 22 ft.
• Dry Weight: 3,050 lbs.
• GVWR: 3,500 lbs.
• Fresh Water Cap.: 23 gal.
• Gray Water Cap.: Combined with black water
• Black Water Cap.: 30 (combined with gray water)

If you like the small size of the Opus 15, but don’t care about the potential off-roading/boondocking features, then you’ll love the Bambi (also 15 ft!)! With a modern interior and four different floor plans to fit your camping lifestyle, this is a good pick.

The fresh water tank is significantly smaller than what you’ll see in off roading designs (if you have hook ups, you don’t *need* a giant fresh water tank to store water!), but that’s ok if you plan on staying at places with hookups.

On the plus side, with smaller tanks, it’s way lighter and able to be towed by SUVs!

For a full bathroom though, you will need to go to the 22FB… the 16 ft version has a wet bath. You do still get a whole interior kitchen, dinette, and dedicated bed though!

InTech Terra Magnolia

The Intech Terra Magnolia: Sturdy but lightweight, with *tons* of extra features and a futuristic aesthetic!

If you love lots of natural light and a luxurious interior that has the capability to also hold it’s own boondocking… then you’ll love this! The beautiful panaramic windows and well placed lighting really make it feel like a classy hotel!

Besides the looks though, it’s construction is also stellar! The cage frame is made from aluminum tubing and fully welded – that means it’s going to be light and strong! The base model offers plenty to be excited about, however there are tons of add on options.

This particular design includes options for a slide out rear kitchen and an off grid package (solar, extra batteries etc) which is so helpful if you plan to save money camping by boondocking and such. The double axle makes it especially durable!

Bruder EXP-6

The Bruder EXP-6: An off-roading beast with space and comfort

The unique suspension and chassis combination allows for 3X more wheel travel than most other dual-axle trailers. This helps the EXP-6 be easier to tow and perform really well on rough trails with a lot of articulation.  As expected for something of this quality, the price tag does match! =P

With its wet bath inside and sleeping space for up to six, the EXP-6 is a nice choice for families.

While the Basecamp X obviously isn’t a hard-core off-road trailer and won’t go everywhere the Bruder EXP-6 will, it’s still a nice choice for exploring some rough backroads. 

The X on the Basecamp model name means it gets a 3” lift kit, all-terrain tires, a front stone guard, and extra window protection. 

But just like the regular Basecamp, its intelligent design is perfect for the active couple who want to explore. There’s a wetbath, a rear hatch for loading outdoor gear like bikes and skis, and a huge panorama window for soaking in the views at your favorite spot.

The Taxa Mantis Bathroom: An easy to tow, low profile travel trailer that’s a great option for off roading capability with a reasonable price.

Just like the Airstream Basecamp X, the Winnebago HIKE isn’t a hard-core off-roader. It’s more of a soft-roader that’s ready for dirt roads with a few extra potholes.

Plus, the smallest floor plan that comes in at just over 20 feet in length packs one of the largest bathrooms among the off-road camper trailers on this list.

The Winnebago Revel Bathroom: A combination shower/toilet wetbath that can also double as a gear closet.

Custom-made van conversions are more popular than ever. But the Winnebago Revel is one of the few off-road vans with a bathroom that’s ready to go right off the lot. 

The Revel was definitely made for outdoor adventurers in mind. In addition to its 4×4 capabilities, the power lift bed raises to give you additional gear storage space for your outdoor toys. Plus, the dual 125-amp hour batteries mean you can stay off-grid longer.

nuCamp Cirrus 820

The nuCamp Cirrus 820: A wetbath with a toilet, sink, and a fold-down sink for extra room when showering.

If you’ve already got a pickup truck, just throw a truck camper like the Cirrus on the back and now you’ve got an off-road camper. Granted, with the extra weight and height of the truck camper, you won’t be able to handle a lot of technical off-road mountain trails, but you can go farther off-road than you could with a normal pull-behind camper.

The Cirrus 820 has a dry weight of just under 3,000 pounds and is made to work with ¾ ton trucks or 1-ton short bed trucks. 

The Cirrus makes good use of space in the wet bath. It’s got a large sink (so you don’t feel like you’re washing your face in a dollhouse sink 😆). Then, the sink folds down so you have extra space when showering or taking care of other business.

Where can i dump the waste from my off-road camper.

A lot will depend on the type of waste tanks. If it’s like a normal RV, then you’ll need to pull up to a dump station, get out your sewer hose , and dump your waste. Other off-road campers might have a removable waste tank that you can dump in a normal toilet, a pit toilet, or an RV dump station. 

*Don’t dump waste chemicals out in the wild. If you plan on doing that, go with a portable composting toilet .

What is the smallest off-road camper with a bathroom?

The BRS Offroad Pursuit is the smallest one with a shower, but it doesn’t have a dedicated toilet. You have to use a portable camping toilet . The Black Series Classic12 is the smallest off road trailer on this list with an interior wetbath with a toilet and shower.

American made as opposed to some of the Chinese imports listed here, and more rugged, less RV-like than the large campers in this list.

Is this the perfect off-road camper? Boreas Campers thinks the new EOS-12 is the holy grail

You can get far, far off the grid with this one-of-a-kind travel trailer.

If you’re looking for maximum go-anywhere camping versatility, almost nothing beats an off-road-ready teardrop trailer . They’re like towable hard-sided tents with all the amenities you need — sleeping quarters, a basic cooking setup, some sort of power supply, and a little bit of storage for your clothes and essentials. But their extremely compact designs can feel cramped after a few weeks or even a few days. If you’re looking for something more, but a rugged full-sized travel trailer is too much (or too expensive ), Colorado’s Boreas Campers just announced a Goldilocks solution that promises the best of both worlds.

The all-new 2023 EOS-12 is angling to be one off-grid camper to rule them all. This is no ordinary off-road teardrop trailer or even a lightweight travel trailer , but a deft combination of the two. The 20-foot length is closer in size to today’s compact travel trailers, but the streamlined, pop-top design is reminiscent of a more traditional teardrop.

What sets it apart is Boreas’ clever use of space. The surprisingly roomy interior — including the main sleeping quarters, the dinette (also a fold-down bed that sleeps two adults), and the stand-up wet bath, complete with a dry camping toilet — is usable without popping the canvas top. It’s particularly useful in winter situations (when you want to do everything possible to keep the inside toasty warm) or at some of the best RV campgrounds that don’t allow soft-sided campers (either for aesthetic reasons or because bears might be an issue). But, when you need a little extra room, the top extends to reveal a roomy 6’6” of headspace.

As with typical teardrop trailers, Boreas Campers pushes the kitchen to the exterior. That includes multiple pullouts to reveal a fully functional sink, a three-burner cooktop, and a sizable Truma 105 portable camping refrigerator (with the option to upgrade to a Truma 96 dual-zone fridge/freezer combo). Because counter space is always at a premium, there’s even a fold-down exterior shelf to make the kitchen more usable. By deploying the built-in 270-degree awning and a few pieces of camp furniture, the entire outdoor space becomes an al fresco dining/living room to rival your backyard patio at home.

But it’s what you don’t see at first glance that proves this is a hardcore off-grid-capable camper trailer. The 50-gallon freshwater reservoir pairs with a 40-gallon gray water tank, allowing for weeks of off-grid camping for two. (Bonus: There’s no black water tank to mess with!) The EOS-12 also comes standard with a 540Ah lithium-ion battery bank and 300W of rooftop-mounted solar, with the option to upgrade to 1,080Ah and 500W of solar. It’s a seriously capable setup in either configuration. Plus, every aspect, from power and water to lights and speakers, is seamlessly integrated using Garmin’s O.N.E. system, meaning everything can be monitored and controlled via a single mobile app.

This camper rides on a heavy-duty steel powder-coated chassis and beefy BFG K02 tires, so it’s purpose-built for off-road exploration . The independent Cruisemater air suspension makes for a buttery smooth ride even on the gnarliest roads and can be tweaked or auto-leveled using that same Garmin O.N.E. system. It’s all built using composite materials without an ounce of wood to be found. So the lightweight EOS-12 tips the scales at a scant 3,750-pound dry weight — about 1,000 pounds lighter than any similarly equipped camper trailer. Bottom line: It’s light, rugged, and extremely well-equipped.

Whenever it's time to book a campsite, I groan at the thought. As I hesitantly log into the reservation platform, I settle for whatever spot I can find, knowing the good ones get booked fast. But here's the kicker - by the time I arrive at the grounds, I'm surrounded by empty sites with the "reserved" tag displayed, unavailable for use, yet unoccupied. Why does this happen? Well, it's not just bad luck. A recent study reveals that over half of campers don't show up for their reserved sites, booking them "just in case" they plan on going. What can you do about it the next time you go to book a camping trip? Here's some helpful info that may illuminate what's happening and make the process less daunting.

The growing trend of no-shows in the camping world In 2023, less than half (42.7%) of campers actually made it to their camping destinations. This was further strained by the fact that booking a campsite was over four times more competitive in 2023 than it was in 2019. 87.3% of campers who didn't make it to their campsites in 2023 canceled at least two days in advance. 32.2% canceled in even less time. Younger generations, such as Millennials and Gen X-ers, were 52.6% more likely to abandon their campsite, and higher earners were more likely to let their camping spot go last minute. However, this issue affects all demographics; just under 15% of campers abandon a reservation each year. This trend may be the result of the recent boom in camping reservations. Between 2021 and 2023, 20 million first-time campers ventured into the great outdoors, adding to the booking competition. It can also be tricky to find availability with the ever-fluctuating national park reservation requirements and changes, leading to hasty bookings without clear plans in place.

The Best Off-Road Camping Trailers

Overlanding is about communing with nature, but burning a bunch of fuel for power, heating and cooking feels antithetical to that pursuit. Colorado Campworks has resolved this conundrum with their popular trailer, the Nomadic System One (also known as the NS-1). It’s 100 percent solar-powered — with up to 11,000 watts of battery storage — but still offers all of the comforts and amenities one would expect from a quality trailer, including badass off-road capability.

The Topo2 is Escapod’s four-season off-road teardrop trailer. Sacrifice doesn’t have to be part of the off-road trailering experience. The Opus OP-15 sleeps four and cleverly fits all the comforts of home, including a hot shower, a large fridge and freezer and air conditioning, into a footprint that’s smaller than an Airstream Bambi . With a galvanized and welded stainless steel chassis and a trailing arm suspension with dual shock absorbers, the OP-15 can withstand pretty much anything Mother Nature can throw at you.

The Taxa Outdoors Woolly Bear trailer would make this list based on the name alone. It’s super lightweight at 1,270 pounds, meaning it can be towed by a base-engine Subaru Outback . It’s also versatile, accommodating a full-sized camping kitchen, ample gear storage and most two- or three-person rooftop tents . Options include a mosquito net room and a propane package, as well.

Sadly, Black Series off-road trailers have nothing to do with those super-hot AMG models , but don’t hold that against them. This originally-Australian brand creates all-terrain trailers that are tough as nails on the outside — packing steel armor, independent suspension and a 360-degree-rotating hitch — yet offer Airstream-like comfort and luxury inside. Setting up a tent while you’re traveling by side-by-side can be annoying and time-consuming. Nevada-based Sunnyside Offroad has a solution: the Boony Stomper . It offers few frills, but it weighs just 600 pounds (depending on options), allowing it to be towed by pretty much any vehicle, including a UTV. Plus, it’s specially designed not to impede trail performance, thanks to a custom long-travel suspension and hard-walled, aluminum-sided construction

It offers pretty much maximum versatility, enabling you to turn it into whatever you want: it can be a fully outfitted mobile campsite with a tent platform, a well-equipped kitchen, fridge and barbecue setup, awnings and even a shower — or, it can simply be a stripped-out rig to store your gear. And with a departure angle of 40.7, it can follow your off-roader pretty much anywhere.

Rooftop tent or rooftop cargo box ? Signature partnered with Toytuf to offer both. There’s additional gear storage on the roof with a full-length storage cage. This cage can hold loose items like firewood or unwieldy items. You can also remove the front and rear doors to create a pass-through for surfboards or a kayak. A Signature or third-party rooftop tent can then mount above the storage cage. You can also choose an awning to add as an option.

What to Look for When Buying an Off-Road Camping Trailer

What factors should you consider when buying an off-road trailer? We decided to consult the experts and spoke to Chris and Jen Hudak, the co-founders of Escapod , to give us their rundown of the basic factors buyers should look at.

Ground Clearance

The trailer must be able to surmount the obstacles you put in front of it. Not having enough ground clearance will be a limiting factor. “The first thing I’d look at in an off-road camper is the off-road trail conditions you want to achieve,” Chris says. “How high does the trailer have to be off the ground?”

Proper Off-Road Suspension

The second thing Chris and Jen would look at is the suspension. They state that a “broad spectrum” of suspensions would be classified as off-road. Not all of them are optimized for the weight of the trailer. They opted to build their own freeride suspension for the Topo2 .

“It’s an independent suspension with a coil over design,” Chris says. “And that was because what we realized is that if we can give you a more enjoyable towing experience you can go to further places and you can be less hard on the trailer itself”

Weight factors in two ways. The first is meeting the weight limit for the tow vehicle. “Can your tow vehicle tow it to where it needs to go,” Chris states. A lot of off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler deliver ample capability but are limited on what they can tow vs. more specialized trucks.

The other is the amenities. You can have a super-light trailer, but the trade off is that it may not have all of the features you want. Striking that balance is going to be up to the customer. “That’s where you end up in that mobility versus firepower kind of battle,” Jen says. “What makes sense for the customer in terms of what experience they want?”

Length is a major consideration. It’s a factor on trail. More compact trailers are going to be more maneuverable. “Some of these longer trailers can’t do a u-turn on a trail or a forest service road,” Chris says. It’s also a factor when you come back from the trail. Chris and Jen wanted the TOPO2 to fit in a standard seven-foot garage, and it features a removable coupler to help achieve that.

Ease of Use

Setup time is a major factor, both when you’re arriving at a camp site and packing up to head home. A shell with a tent attached may be cheaper. A more utilitarian trailer will have a tent attached and a lot of moving parts. More premium options won’t require as much time and effort. A goal with the Topo2’s design was to minimize that effort.

“We started Escapod because we were time-strapped people that wanted to go out for a quick weekend getaway and we didn’t want to deal with all of the setup,” Jen states. “We wanted to attach something to our vehicle and have everything ready to go.”

Mammoth Overland is scheduled to roll out the first Genesis Edition of their new Tall Boy overlanding trailer before the end of the year. We got an early preview, however, spending a couple of days with the prototype camping off-grid high in the mountains near its Woodinville, Wash., factory.

The Mammoth Overland TL Tall Boy is a uniquely designed and constructed off-road camper trailer built right alongside Vashon Aircraft’s Ranger airplane. The TL uses the same aircraft-quality production equipment, aluminum materials, and attention to detail. It should result in a trailer that will serve its owners for generations.

Here’s what this new Tall Boy overland trailer has to offer families who love off-roading, camping off-grid, and doing it in a high-quality camper trailer designed specifically for such purposes.

In short: Mammoth Overland’s newest entry in the off-road trailer market comfortably sleeps four, has a bathroom, 6’3” headroom, and is rock-solid in design. Yet its aircraft-grade aluminum body makes it light enough to be towed by most mid-size pickups and SUVs.

Off-Road Camper Trailers

Overlanding and backcountry camping have attracted a lot of interest from younger families who love the outdoors and getting far away from the daily hustle and bustle of urban/city life whenever time allows. The typical RV travel trailer isn’t designed for that type of use, especially when the pavement ends and the road to that out-of-the-way destination turns to gravel, sand, or dirt. That’s why “overlanding,” or “ off-road ” trailers have become the campers of choice.

The downside of the typical overlanding/off-road trailer is they are usually built in either a version of a teardrop-style sleep-inside design, or as a cargo-style trailer set up with a roof-top tent so they can be towed over challenging backroads.

Teardrops sleep two inside and typically have less than 4 feet of headroom, while the roof-top sleeping quarters of cargo trailer designs put you 9 feet above the ground. So, trying to accommodate a family of four in either can be challenging, especially when it comes to having a bathroom and a comfortable sleeping space.

The larger, tandem-axle off-road camper trailers have more space and features, but can easily top $100K. 

Mammoth Overland Tall Boy Review

Mammoth Overland’s 2,900-pound 2025 TL (Tall Boy) overlanding camping trailer stands 9 feet tall and comfortably sleeps four. It’s a limited-production, all-aluminum overlanding trailer that literally raises the roof on those norms, as I found out while camping in the prototype.

Not only is the TL “Genesis Edition” ruggedly built to withstand the most challenging of backcountry roads and off-road Jeep trails, but it also has an interior ceiling height of 6’3”, comfortably sleeps four on its king bed in front, and 6’2” long dual bunks on the street side. It also has an interior bathroom with a shower, which is a key feature for any family-oriented off-road trailer.

The Tall Boy is also one of the lightest and least expensive of “ camper-style ” tandem-axle off-road trailers to hit the market with an MSRP of $72,000 fully accessorized. And none of today’s off-road/overlanding-type campers are built using aircraft-grade materials, design, production, and quality control. There’s a reason for the latter elements of the Tall Boy.

Aircraft Manufacturing Approach

“My approach to the development of our off-road trailers is probably a little bit different than other off-road trailer manufacturers,” says Scott Taylor, Mammoth Overland’s president, who also had a long career as a production manager of numerous Boeing military and commercial aircraft programs. Scott is also the President/COO of Vashon Aircraft , Mammoth’s parent company.

“We designed this trailer with an aircraft manufacturer’s mindset: to make it really strong, really light, and elegantly functional with minimal moving parts. Our goal was to build a ‘generational’ off-road trailer; one that could be handed down to the next generation, and the next,” says the long-time pilot.

Sleep With a View

During our camping trip, we made good use of the indoor bathroom, as well as the array of USB and 110V plug-ins. And, we loved the sturdy two-piece door — the steps drop down like an airplane — that was very secure. The other aspect of the Tall Boy that my wife and I both thought was well done was the view the multiple oval-shaped roof windows along the roof sides gave of the surrounding area.

“Windows were an important part of the initial design. I want to experience being outside while flying my Vashon Ranger,” Scott explained prior to us leaving the factory, towing the TL behind his four-door Jeep Wrangler . “The same thing is how I feel about overlanding: I want to be outside experiencing nature. So let’s be outside when we’re inside, have the openness of not being enclosed and cooped up.”

As for sleeping accommodations in the Tall Boy, the thick king-sized foam mattress up front is very comfortable. Two big RV-style windows on each side allow a great view and are fully adjustable to open as far as needed for ventilation. They are also fitted with bug screens and shades like a traditional camping trailer.

Down below, on the street side, are two 24” W x 6’2” L bunks adjacent to the narrow aisle and across from the bathroom. The upper bunk can be quickly and easily deployed so it hinges down from the wall to turn the lower bunk into a comfy couch.

Outdoor Cooking

Outside is the kitchen. It’s located on the off-side rear and serves as the back wall of the pass-thru storage compartment. The aluminum unit swings out, locking in place to provide a stable cooking platform with a two-burner propane stove, small sink, and convenient 42-quart, 12V freezer/fridge. The sink is pretty small, and on the prototype model, it drained out on our feet — the production models will have a different sink drain setup. 

In addition to the swing-out kitchen, the TL also has a nifty foot-wide, 3-foot-long drop-down side panel for a prep table — or a serving table. And, it opens to reveal a three-shelf pantry that can be accessed from inside or outside.

We used the table to hold a portable Kenyon SilKEN smokeless electric 110V grill that plugged into a receptacle inside the body opening. The TL has USB, 12V, and 110V plug-ins conveniently located throughout the trailer.

Storage Solutions

In the roomy rear storage compartment is a 50-gallon fresh water tank, enough to last a family of four for several days off-grid camping. The storage compartment can carry a lot of gear, which is good because storage inside is very limited unless gear is laid on top of the beds or stuffed into the vertical shelf at the entryway.

Up top of the Genesis Edition Tall Boy is the 23Zero 270-degree awning that spreads out to provide cover from the kitchen and around the rear of the camping trailer. Deploying it requires a ladder — or climbing up the square-tube ladder mounted on the front of the TL. You can also carry 500 pounds of gear secured to the roof rack of the Tall Boy.

Tall Boy Towing

On the road and on the trail, the Tall Boy tows easily because it has about 400 pounds of tongue weight, which makes trailer-induced sway nonexistent — at least, that’s how it towed behind Scott’s four-door Wrangler. The long tongue, Lock ‘N’ Roll articulating hitch, and tandem Timbren Axle-Less suspension helped isolate the Jeep from the trailer when the terrain got a little twisty and rough.

Overall, the Tall Boy Genesis Edition camping trailer looks and feels like it would be a good match for young, adventuresome families. The aircraft-style monocoque design of the body is designed to withstand the rigors of being towed over rough terrain such as that found in the Pacific Northwest, and the interior provides four-season comfort and a great view of those types of surroundings.

As Scott says, “I think we put a new spin on overlanding trailers with the Tall Boy. Our goal was to build a rugged, reliable off-road trailer that  would be perfect for the mom and dad with two teenagers who love camping off-grid, towing with a mid-size pickup, Jeep, or SUV.”
