All Of Spotify's Most Popular Travel-Inspired Playlists, For Your Road Tripping Adventures

When it comes to road trip playlists, no other music streaming service does it quite as Spotify does.

For many of us, the single most important app on our phones (besides the text message app) is Spotify. Music has become ingrained as much in our daily lives as things such as eating or sleeping and, much of the time, it's almost rarer that a person isn't listening to music while doing daily tasks and chores. Music is there for us when we're cleaning the house, in our headphones while we're working, blasting in the gym when we're working out, blaring out in restaurants or at home while we're eating - and also coming out of our own speakers while we're in the car . After all, if you're not listening to music, are you really even driving?

Travel has taken a bit of a nosedive and a wild twist since 2019 and with it, the idea of what a normal vacation implies. With the uprooting of getaways as we knew them, road trips have swiftly and, almost seamlessly, taken the place of exotic destinations and ten-hour-long plane rides to other countries. The playlists that we would have created for the plane ride have now turned into playlists that we've curated for a long car ride, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Music streaming apps such as Spotify have made it incredibly easy for us to do this and they even offer their own user-curated and data-based playlists that help pass the time on the open road .

Spotify Will Actually Create A Playlist For You

Through a generator called 'Soundtrack your Ride,' Spotify will take users through a series of questions based on their personal preferences and curate a soundtrack that's specifically suited to their personal tastes. This is a huge deal for those who appreciate not only good tunes during a long car ride - but good tunes that reflect who they are personally and what they love to listen to.

This simple tool is as good as gold for upcoming road trips and will allow drivers (and passengers, if they're given the right of a DJ) to create their own playlists for the ride with practically zero song-searching involved. The process even takes all the guesswork out of a playlist as Spotify's artificial intelligence goes as far as what type of car you're driving and who's going with you. Creepy? Yes, but also pretty awesome.

Spotify's Own Playlists To Put You In The Traveling Mood

Spotify also curates playlists based on practically anything you could possibly be looking for. These playlists are categorized by moods, activities, genres, and even sub-genres and interests. It's a wide world of music out there and the only thing to do when getting ready for a road trip is to dive right in and discover what sounds good to you. Whatever music sets your soul on fire and makes your heart sing (or your vocal cords, whichever) is bound to be a great playlist to start off a road trip. According to Spotify, there's one playlist to rule them all: ' The Best Driving Songs 2021 .'

Related:  It's Been Proven That Outdoor Road Trips Boost Moods, And Here Are The Stats

This playlist contains hits dating all the way back to the oldies of the big band and swing era to modern-day music that will make you dance in your seat (not you, drivers) and it's pretty wide-ranging and scattered... which also happens to make for the best road trip music. Starting off, the first song on the playlist is 'Return of the Mac' by Mark Morrison to get you into the grove of things with some smooth, catchy RnB/hip hop. Following that are songs by REO Speedwagon, Bruce Springsteen, R. Kelly, The Cars (pun probably intended), and even the Vengaboys for a little 90s earworm. The playlist dances around so many decades that it's bound to provide one hit after another and for those who have Spotify accounts, if you don't like a song, you're able to skip it with unlimited skips. If nothing else, this playlist starts as a great jumping-off point to generate ideas for your own personal playlist.

Other popular user-recommend (and regular traveler) playlists include those which have also been created by the streaming app. A playlist called 'Good Vibes' provides, well, all the good vibes you could possibly want while on the road. This is your classic good mood playlist and one that will have everyone humming along while they settle into those long hours on the open road. For a chill playlist, 'Hanging Out and Relaxing' is another popular choice with just over six hours of music for your listening pleasure. For shorter road trips with just under three hours of music, 'Roadtrip with Friends' is a fun option and includes everyone's car ride favorites. When a playlist ends, Spotify does this cool thing where it will continue to play music based on the playlist you'd been listening to - so don't let the length of a playlist keep you from choosing it.

The Ultimate Road Trip Playlist According to Travelers, Editors, and Spotify

This year has been nothing short of a whirlwind. As we wrap up the year, international travel is still a no go, and flying in general seems like a bit of a risky proposition. As a result, the humble road trip has roared back on our collective radar as many of us have been taking to the road as a way to get out of the house and explore our surroundings near and far.

When we began discussing road trips on zoom calls and in Slack channels, the one thing that everyone could agree on was that music was essential. A good soundtrack can mean the difference between the hours flying by as fast as the scenery out the window or turning around before you reach your destination.

So what makes a great road trip playlist? It starts with the songs, but with so many incredible choices out there, it’s hard to whittle down to something that stands up to the test of time. However, we had an idea.

To make the perfect road trip playlist, we used three components. First, we looked at Spotify data to identify the most popular songs for driving, according to the top 100 road trip playlists. Next, we surveyed our TripSavvy readers to get their take. After that, our editors weighed in on their favorite songs. In the end, we were left with 29 carefully curated high-vibe songs that create the ultimate travel music of 2020.

Here are the top road trip songs. For the best listening experience, try playing them in order. Enjoy!

"Wake Me Up" by Avicii

Released in 2013, “Wake Me Up” made history by becoming the first song on Spotify to accumulate 200 million streams. This song can instantly put you in a good mood and that's why it's up first on our list.

"Night Moves" by Bob Seger

"Night Moves" is an easy-listening, American Rock classic. "Rolling Stone" magazine named it Single of the Year in 1977. This song is sure to get you in the right headspace for hitting the highway.

"Fly Like an Eagle" by Steve Miller Band

As suggested by one of our readers, "Fly Like an Eagle" was a must-have for this playlist. Even though this psychedelic-rock tune was released in 1976, it still feels relevant today.

Feed the babies Who don't have enough to eat Shoe the children With no shoes on their feet House the people Livin' in the street Oh, oh, there's a solution

"I Feel It Coming" by The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk

As suggested by one of our readers, "I Feel It Coming" is a sensual disco-pop song by The Weeknd and Daft Punk. When you play it, this catchy song will make you instinctively bob along as you're on the road.

"Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line

A song that appears on the Spotify list and was submitted by a reader is "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line. This upbeat country song will make you wanna roll the windows down and cruise.

"Take It Easy" by the Eagles

After hours of driving, "Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy," might be the best advice you'll get. Released in 1972, "Take It Easy" by the Eagles is still being played by road trippers, appearing 20 times across the top 100 playlists.

"Riptide" by Vance Joy

"Riptide," the 2013 single by Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy, appears on 13 of the top 100 road trip Spotify playlists. This cheery folk song won the World Music Award for World’s Best Song.

"Old Town Road (Remix)" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus

In 2019 Lil Nas X released "Old Town Road," a country rap remix with Billy Ray Cyrus. It won lots of awards, so it's no wonder that this was a top contender.

"Malibu" by Miley Cyrus

"This song reminds me of a road trip down the west coast from San Francisco to San Diego," says Megan Hartig, Content Marketing Manager. We booked our hotels on the fly with the app Hotel Tonight which was great for spontaneous travel."

"Life in the Fast Lane" by Eagles

You can't listen to "Life in the Fast Lane" without feeling like a badass. This song was on 13 of the top road trip playlists on Spotify. But don't lose your cool as this lyric points out: Life in the fast lane, Surely makes you lose your mind.

Listening to this song can give you a lead foot. Don't get a speeding ticket!

"Hey, Soul Sister" by Train

If you've never sung "Hey, Soul Sister" at the top of your lungs, have you ever been on a road trip? Not according to Spotify listeners. This song appeared 16 times according to Spotify data.

"September" by Earth, Wind & Fire

"I grew up listening to a lot of Earth, Wind & Fire with my parents during road trips," says associate editor Sherri Gardner. "'September' was one of my family’s favorites because it’s fun to sing along to, especially with the windows down."

"Burn The House Down" by AJR

Another great suggestion by one of our readers, "Burn The House Down" written by the pop trio consisting of three brothers, began as a 2018 song about U.S. political climate and became the theme song for the March for Our Lives campaign.

"Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas

If you're struggling to hang in during your long drive, turn up "Carry On Wayward Son" a little louder for some encouragement. This progressive rock song performed by Kansas in 1976 took the band to the next level.

"Dancing In The Moonlight" by Jubël featuring NEIMY

"Dancing In The Moonlight" was named nine times in the top 100 Spotify road trip playlists. This 2018 feel-good pop cover is sure to lift your spirits with its upbeat rhythm, especially if you are driving after the sun goes down.

"Road Trip (2020 Version)" by Convent Bonfires

This song was suggested by one of our readers, and given the title, we had to include it. This obscure, indie-rock track released this year gives us all the good vibes.

"Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey

With almost one billion streams on Spotify, it's no surprise "Don't Stop Believin'" cracks the top 3, with 24 appearances on Spotify's top road trip playlists. So next time you're in your car, turn up the volume and sing on and on and on and on.

"Circles" by Post Malone

Another song listed on the Spotify charts and our reader survey is "Circles" by Post Malone. This 2019 pop single won Song of the Year at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. It sat for a record 39 weeks in the Hot 100's top 10.

"Feel This Good" by Jackopierce

Another reader's choice, "Feel This Good" by musical duo Jackopierce is an easy listening song for the freeway.

Woke up this morning, rolled out of bed My favorite song's playing inside my head I go out on the freeway, windows down Don't know where I'm going, but it's good to move around and Days like this should never end

"Big Yellow Taxi" by Lennon & Maisy

Canadian sisters, Lennon and Maisy Stella, do a beautiful cover of the classic song "Big Yellow Taxi" originally sung by Joni Mitchell.

"Shotgun (The Wild Remix)" by George Ezra & The Wild

Whoever gets to ride shotgun is sure to enjoy this 2018 song by George Ezra featuring The Wild. "Shotgun" was listed on both the Spotify and readers' choice lists.

"Layla" by Eric Clapton

The acoustic rock song "Layla" was suggested by readers and found on six of the top Spotify road trip playlists. Hailed as one of the most iconic classic rock ballads of all time, there is no surprise it belongs here.

"Higher Love" by Kygo & Whitney Houston

This version of "Higher Love" produced by Norwegian DJ Kygo and the late Whitney Houston is a tropical, high-energy song that was number two on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

"Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty

"I grew up listening to Tom Petty (he was my first concert), and he's still one of my all-time favorite musicians," says senior editor Jamie Hergenrader. "Free Fallin' is worthy of a road trip playlist because it embodies the vibe of the trip—you're out on the open road, free to explore, and the lyrics even mention or hint at several classic L.A. routes, such as Ventura Boulevard, Highway 101, and Mulholland Drive."

"More Than a Feeling" by Boston

Is there a song that reminds you of your secret crush? Apparently someone in the band Boston had one, and that inspired their hit song "More Than a Feeling." Spotify users can relate. The song shows up on 22 road trip playlists, making it the fourth most popular on our Spotify list.

"Hello Darlin'" by Conway Twitty

“In the car, there’s nothing better than classic country," says Astrid Taran, senior audience editor. "There’s something about driving in the middle of nowhere blasting old school country.”

"Fast Car" by Jonas Blue & Dakota

"Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman was listed 10 times on Spotify's list, but we included a remix by Jonas Blue & Dakota to keep things fresh and upbeat to keep things interesting along the ride.

"Sun Models" by ODESZA featuring Madelyn Grant

"This song feels like the perfect soundtrack for a road trip and makes everything feel a little more epic," says visual editor Taylor McIntyre.

"Jack & Diane" by John Mellencamp

Last but certainly not least, here we have a classic rock ballad by John Mellencamp. "Jack & Diane" was released in the summer of 1982 and has been a go-to by road trippers ever sense, appearing 10 times in the Spotify road trip lists.

Best Spotify Playlists For Your Road Trip

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

best spotify playlist for travel

I've been on my share of road trips, from family vacations to adventures with friends to weekend getaways with my husband. And what I know from these car rides is that one of the most important things to have ready to go is music. Nobody wants to wait 30 minutes between each song during a 5-hour car ride as someone looks for the next hit.

It's time to do yourself a favor and get the music squared away before your vehicle pulls out of the driveway. Do you want the perfect selection of songs to roll down your windows to, keep your kids entertained or help eliminate the travel stress you're feeling? If so, check out these links to playlists on Spotify and save the ones you like for your next road trip.

*Disclaimer: I do not support all of the content within these songs.

PLAYLISTS TO SING ALONG TO:

2010s Throwbacks by Nostalgic Vibes

I guarantee that if you've been listening to the radio/popular music streaming stations over the past 10 years, you'll know these hits. "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake? "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele? See, I told you. Once upon a time, these were your jams. Perhaps they still are ...

Movie Musicals by jadybabyy Hey, theater nerds, this is for you. (Don't worry, I'm one, too.) Raise your hand if you can rap all the Hamilton lyrics or enjoy practicing those high notes in The Phantom of the Opera . Of course, I couldn't forget Disney hits, so this selection has those, too.

PLAYLISTS TO CRUISE TO:

R&B - 1990's and up by Marcella Standen Other than jazz, is any music genre truly as smooth as contemporary R&B? On this customized station, you'll find songs from artists like Alicia Keys, Usher and Chris Brown that will make you wish you were riding in a convertible with the top down.

CRUISER COUNTRY by Franz Lalu

Country music was basically made for cruising (even if that's just on a tractor). But it can be difficult to find a playlist on Spotify with variety. So, check out this one, which covers new and some older country from male and female artists.

PLAYLISTS FOR A FAMILY VACATION:

Kids Playlist by cheskadenise22 When your kids aren't sleeping, they'll need entertainment. Try this collection of songs from popular children's movies. Have you heard them a million times? Probably. But at least you'll be 100% certain that they'll do the trick in keeping your kiddos occupied.

All Time Classics (50's-00's) by Darcy Cleeve

When you have a multigenerational carload, it's hard to please everyone, but this playlist just might do it. With songs like "Ring Of Fire," "I Will Survive" and "Hey There Delilah," you can entertain grandparents, parents AND teenagers who, if they don't know these hits, arguably should be educated.

Turning up the volume on Bohemian Rhapsody song

PLAYLISTS FOR A GIRLS TRIP:

Who runs the World by Joy Baker

I bet you can guess what kind of playlist you'll be listening to from the title alone. This is a compilation of popular songs from modern female artists. It includes Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears ... all the girl power.

Timeless Love Songs by Spotify

Heading to a bachelorette party with your gals? In addition to upbeat songs, at some point, you might want to slow it down and get sentimental about love. Celebrate the upcoming wedding with these timeless tunes. Who knows? Maybe the bride and groom still need a first dance song, and this romantic rundown will give them good ideas.

PLAYLISTS TO HELP YOU RELAX/CHILL:

Indie Folk & Alternative Music - Best Indie Folk Songs by Indiemono

Take in the drivable sights with these easy listening melodies in the background. You'll recognize The Lumineers, Bon Iver and The Head And The Heart. There will also be artists you're likely not familiar with, but their music will calm your nerves just the same.

Worship Acoustics by Jan Ladub

Let your soul find rest from your noisy kids in the backseat with this playlist. It breaks down all the popular Christian worship hits from Hillsong Worship, Elevation Worship, Chris Tomlin and more. While quieter, these songs are still easy to sing along to.

PLAYLISTS TO HELP YOU STAY AWAKE:

Classic Rock by Filtr Finland

This compilation includes some of the top songs and artists — AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin — that most rock lovers will know. They'll awaken your tired senses, make you want to headbang and play air guitar. (Just don't attempt that if you're the driver, please.)

MOVIE & TV Theme Songs (Guessing Game) by Critic Kebab

It's time for a quiz! No worries, it's a fun one. How many of these movie and TV show theme songs can you name? Get everyone in the car participating and maybe even make it a competition. The winner could get shotgun, a road trip treat or even choose the next playlist.

Planning an epic west coast road trip: Part 2 - Road trip music

If you don’t have Spotify, no worries, you can take a look through these playlists and choose songs to get from wherever you want!

I’m a little obsessed with Spotify. I actually bought a subscription to Spotify specifically for a road trip… and then never looked back.

I decided to pay for “a month” (which turned into like 2 years so far) of Spotify because I loved that you can choose specific songs to listen to. I specifically chose it for road trip music though because Spotify lets you download music so you can listen to it without an wifi or data connection.

I figured that feature would be really useful on a road trip because there are definitely times while driving that your service gets sketchy, and can make your music cut out.

Since I’m going on another driving trip soon , I decided to put together this list of the best Spotify playlists to listen to on a road trip.

I love classic rock, but also pop, electronic, modern rock, and oldies. It all depends on the song. Luckily these playlists have a ton of great songs on them. It actually makes it kinda hard to choose which one to listen to ;-P

Hope you guys like ’em!

1. Classic Road Trip Songs

2. indie rock road trip, 3. 70’s road trip, 4. road trip sing-along songs.

No. Not like Mary Had A Little Lamb.

5. Family Road Trip

6. road trip, 7. get going, 8. drive through the mountains, 9. rockin’ road trip, 10. barcelona layover, 11. classic oldies.

Check out this GIANT list of 50 apps to use on your road trip!

Hope you guys like the playlists, don’t forget to share this around for others!

What are some of your fav songs?

I was recently introduced to this song called One Track Mind by Blood Panda ( see them on Spotify here ) and it has all the #RoadTripVibes so I’m adding their music video to this list. Check it out!

There's nothing nicer than singing along to your favourite tunes on a road trip , but finding the perfect soundtrack to your travels can be tricky. Help is at hand from audio streaming platform Spotify, which has launched a feature called Soundtrack your Ride.

Women friends traveling and driving having fun dancing in the car with opened roof

It generates a playlist for you based on your Spotify history and your answers to a few questions. You start by using the Google Maps tool or time selector to select the length and route of your car journey, and then take a short quiz consisting of five questions. Spotify then uses your listening habits and quiz choices to put together a soundtrack for the length of your ride.

A woman looking out the window from a car

The questions it asks includes who you're travelling with - solo, kids, friends, pet or partner - the kind of a car you drive and your favourite genre for the road.  You also select your "drive vibe," with the options including "mellow," "high-energy" and "love-sick." It also asks you to select your ultimate driving song from one of six choices. These include "Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, “Body Like a Back Road” by Sam Hunt, “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers, “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts and “Ridin’ Solo” by Jason Derulo.

A road through the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Once all of this is completed, Spotify generates a playlist that aims to have you cruising along in musical heaven on your trip. To find out more about it and compile your own roadtrip playlist, please see here.

These are all classics for sure when you’re talking about a road trip. My favorite would be Sammy Hagar “I Can’t Drive 55”. Something about that cool flow that makes it perfect for a summer road trip. But I would not follow the advice because I wish not to get pulled over crossing the country LOL.

Thank you so much for putting out this list of road trips and songs!!

We start with one of Spotify's official playlists for summer. As you can guess by the name, it's full of music perfect for any gathering. It's a pop-heavy list, with the summer's newest hits and some old favorites.

2. United States Top 50

Perfect for: Keeping up with what's hot, or finding out what that song was you heard at the pool.

Here are the hits---this playlist collects the 50 most popular tracks in the United States right now. This is a great way to see what's hot this summer, as long as you don't mind pop and contemporary R&B.

Since it's an official Spotify playlist, you'll see blue dots next to new tracks and green/red arrows to show how a track's popularity has recently changed. Spotify also has the top 50 playlists for other countries if you want to discover music from around the world , too.

3. New Music Friday

Perfect for: Catching up on the latest tracks right away.

Do you feel like you need to find more music on Spotify ? A good cure for that is this playlist of the week's best music. It's updated every Friday to bring you a fresh batch of tunes. If you don't like the music here, check out your personal Release Radar playlist, which contains music just for you.

4. Summer Acoustic

Perfect for: Lazing around on summer nights or falling asleep on the beach.

While summer lends itself well to beats, it has its quiet moments too. When you need to chill out a bit, give this playlist a try. It has plenty of calm music for those introspective summer moments.

5. Poolside Disco

Perfect for: Dancing into the night.

This playlist is bursting with funky vibes. Mixing some soul in with disco and funk, Poolside Disco brings the energy to any gathering. It would make great background music to a high-energy party, but we won't tell anyone if you decide to dance like a madman either.

6. Driving Rock Anthems

Perfect for: Cruising along the highway with the top down.

Whether you're taking the convertible out for a spin or on the way to vacation, you need some driving music. This playlist packs classic rock favorites from Toto, Queen, Tom Petty, and more than you can't help but sing along with.

7. Summer Throwbacks

Perfect for: Reminiscing of days gone past, or singing along to old favorites with friends.

Want to flash back to the music that made summers gone by so special? Give this playlist a try. Music has a way of transporting you back to the past in a moment, and this is the perfect way to recall your favorite moments from last year or last decade.

8. Synthwave / Retro Electro

Perfect for: Providing the soundtrack to your gaming sessions or driving through the night.

This is a genre you might not be familiar with, but it's perfect for summer. Synthwave is a modern electronic music genre that's "the musical manifestation of a vintage postcard that says 'Come to L.A.' in pink letters above an image of a crowded beach with people on surfboards and roller skates," according to Synthwave review website Iron Skullet .

It's the perfect musical genre for gamers , but others might like it too. Check it out if you love the '80s or electronic music.

9. Pop Punk Perfection

Perfect for: Long days spent at the pool, or when you're feeling a little rebellious.

Pop punk is a perfect genre for summer. There's something about the power chords of these '90s and '00s songs that screams long summer days off from school, being nervous around girls, and jumping into the pool. It's not the most technically amazing music, but it's certainly catchy.

10. Country Gold

Perfect for: Long drives to nowhere in particular, or cookouts.

If you love country, then integrate it into your summer with these smash hits. It makes perfect music for enjoying your favorite summer foods, or just relaxing with friends.

11. Beach Music

Perfect for: Basking in the glorious sun as you listen to the ocean.

Headed to the beach this summer? Make sure to take this playlist along. Whether you're playing volleyball or just soaking up the sun, these tunes are a perfect fit.

12. Timeless Love Songs

Perfect for: Spending time with your sweetheart.

If love is in the air for you this summer, this playlist can provide the perfect soundtrack. Valentine's Day may be behind us , but that's no reason to ignore love. Whether you're kindling a new relationship or celebrating decades with your beloved, these songs should bring out the romantic in you.

13. Pop 4 Kids

Perfect for: Enjoying some time with your kids.

Finding yourself with bored children this summer? Take advantage of the extra time you have while they're off school with this playlist. It features lots of kid-friendly pop songs that you can have a blast singing along with.

14. Dinner With Friends

Perfect for: Hosting a dinner party, or when you need some easy background music.

This laid-back playlist can set the mood for having friends over this summer. It makes for good background music as you get through other days, too.

15. Have a Great Day!

Perfect for: An instant good mood, or keeping the energy while you tackle summer chores.

Summer is a happy time. If you're not feeling it, try this playlist for a quick boost. It's not specifically summer-themed, but should get you smiling again on those less-than-amazing summer days.

Take these carefully curated Spotify playlists for a spin

The best playlists on Spotify

Live concerts, gigs and festivals are of course to be embraced once more – the need to feel transported to somewhere more beautiful via melodies, lyrics and rhythms has rarely been felt more keenly following a challenging 20-odd months.

That said, maybe you're after a selection of sounds to help you get a good night's sleep , tunes to entertain children at home or a collection of inspiring albums written in self-isolation . Heading down to your local record shop is always one of our top recommendations, but perhaps you got hit with a positive Covid test, or maybe you're just being cautious with social interaction right now. This is where streaming services such as Spotify , Tidal , Qobuz , Deezer and Apple Music can help. These offer a socially distant lifeline at the click of a button – a chance to test-drive new tracks before you buy.

Spotify isn't our reigning champion when it comes to value, variety and audio quality, but its popularity and accessibility is undeniable. And the platform is always trying to offer something new, whether it be artist-led algorithms to better personalise your music recommendations , ‘Only You’ and ‘Blend’ features , or giving Spotify account-holders a chance to 'tip' acts while listening – acts who clearly lost a lot of gig revenue over the past two years.

If you've ever used Spotify, you'll know that typing 'new music' into the search bar will yield a selection of curated mainstream newness from the likes of Lady Gaga, Ella Eyre, Jake Bugg and Stormzy, (and New Music Friday UK is always a good playlist shout here) but what if you're looking for something a bit different? That's where we come in. Why not lend your and ear to a few of these slightly more niche curated playlists? It'll make a change from the hi-res files stored on your laptop, whatever's on the Astell & Kern, the playlist someone shared with you at the start of the first lockdown or the CDs you retrieved from your car glove box, at any rate...

Anti Pop

The best Spotify playlists to listen to right now

Think beat-driven spitting segued with melodic, softly-sung but often edgy vocals – forget commercial pop music, there's a message here if we'll only listen. Expect new tracks from Curtis Waters (pictured) and ballads from Joji interspersed with hard rap from Kenny Mason and everything in between. If OutKast, Wu Tang Clan, Dave, Dungeon Family or Bel Biv DeVoe have ever featured in your heavy rotation, give this a spin. You'll almost certainly learn something.

You might get Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Leonard Cohen or Interpol. And you might get Marilyn Monroe, Whitney Houston or even John Prine singing about a happy enchilada.

Most Necessary

The best Spotify playlists

It's like the ultimate new rap music label. Spotify describes this playlist as "the official voice of generation next". With one eye on the next huge hit-single and another on capturing a snapshot of the current vernacular, you'll rarely hear a track that misses the mark. Phonica Recommends (Home)

The best Spotify playlists to listen to right now

Independent UK record store Phonica only opened in London's Soho in 2003, but it quickly became one of the capital's most-loved vinyl specialists. Basically, if Phonica recommends it, that's more than good enough for us.

Phonica's Spotify page reads: "So much great music out there that we've decided to split up our recommended playlists into two: one for the club and one for home listening".

So now you've got two extra playlists to add to your list, spanning everything from dub, reggae, nu jazz, soul and funk to broken beat and techno. Click the link below to access Phonica's recommended 'home' playlist, or turn your abode into a particularly exclusive club for the night, with the Phonica Recommends (Club) selection.

Gold School

The best SPotify playlists to listen to right now

Vintage throwback hip-hop that strays from the well-explored coastal tracks and celebrates lesser-known heroes of the genre. Think Camp Lo, Big L and Mac Miller alongside Drake, Ghostface Killah, Eminem, 50 Cent (pictured) and Nas.

Got a pressing meeting, booster jab or big grocery shop ahead? Get the cans on and stream this. You're going to ace it.

Acoustic Covers

The best Spotify playlists to listen to right now

Discover Hozier's laid-back cover of the Destiny's Child classic Say My Name, John Mayer's take on Tom Petty's Free Fallin' using just a mic and two guitars, or Teenage Dirtbag as you've never heard it before; sung not by Wheatus but by Ruston Kelly.

The moments of surprise, recognition and ultimately approval come thick and fast here. A staple go-to for when you just can't decide what to listen to.

R&S – Office Favourites

The best Spotify playlists

R&S Records is an independent record label founded in 1984 in Ghent, Belgium. R&S represents the initials of Renaat Vandepapeliere and Sabine Maes, the couple responsible for creating the label.

Expect heavier electronica, house and trance offerings from Richard Fearless or V interspersed with expansive soundscapes from Darkstar, Nautic or Axel Boman, alongside the occasional grime track from Novelist. It'll easily double as your running playlist too, if you're pushing your time.

Late Night Lofi

The best Spotify playlists to listen to right now

Think laid-back chill-hop, juicy lo-fi beats, layered synthy vocals, classical and jazz-infused piano chords with crisp textures; ice clinking in a glass, rain on a window, crunchy leaves and even the brushing of teeth. It's perfect for playing through the cans and relaxing, zoning out, getting ready to sleep or seeing you through a bout of insomnia 'til sunrise.

At 4am in New York, when (if?) Birdland calls time at the bar, you'll finish your drink and talk about the price of a subway ticket versus a yellow taxi home to this playlist, one day...

The What Hi-Fi? Playlist

The best Spotify playlists to listen to right now

Shameless self-promotion aside, this surely beats another Brian Eno album. What you'll get is a regularly updated What Hi-Fi? playlist featuring tunes we've been using over the past month for testing and reviewing purposes.

Like what you hear? If you're feeling nostalgic, you could also treat yourself to our one-off Lockdown Playlist on Spotify and Tidal . Think Lost In The Supermarket by The Clash, Outkast's So Fresh, So Clean , Iggy Pop's I'm Bored and Music For A Nurse by Oceansize, for starters.

Top 6 Spotify Playlists for Road Trips

Driving and music have been inseparably connected ever since the radio was dropped into a car almost eight decades ago. Our journey as drivers is often defined by the music we play while we drive. It starts driving around town, but then that first road trip comes along, and you have completely programmed the tunes that will play with each passing mile. Music and cars are like peanut butter and jelly.

best spotify playlist for travel

Whether you are commuting to work, zipping down to the grocery store, or getting ready to drive across the country, music will be a part of your experience. Below, we’ve compiled a list of the top six Spotify playlists that are absolutely essential for enhancing the driving experience.

6. Road Trip Through the Decades

Each decade has its own vibe and, whether you’re from that specific decade or you just feel like you belong there, nothing says road trip like playing hits from the 70’s, the 80’s, the 90’s, or the 2000’s. There are playlists for every decade, or you can even narrow it down to a specific decade and genre!

5. Family Road Trip

Depending on the age of the kiddos in the back seat, not every Top 40 playlist will have the most appropriate songs. The Family Road Trip mix is the perfect playlist for families with youngsters. Every single song is something you’ll probably recognize, and the lyrics are appropriate for any age group. This list is curated for both adults and kids alike, staying away from Disney staples. Catchy tunes for the adults, and no new words for the kids’ vocabulary.

4. Driving with Disney

If you’re looking for something way more kid friendly, try out this Disney movie soundtrack playlist. Featuring favourites from the classic movies, all throughout the 90’s and 2000’s, and of course the most recent hits like Encanto and Turning Red, this playlist is sure to get the kids excited, and Disney fans of any age!

3. Road Trip Sing-Along Songs

No matter how exciting and how much fun a road trip is, there is always a point where you’ve been in the car too long, the energy slumps, and the moods in the vehicle shift to “get me out of this car!” A proper road trip sing-along is exactly the medicine required for a case of the mid-trip grumpies. It’s impossible to hear these songs hit the speakers and not start belting out the words at the top of your lungs.

2. Indie Rock Road Trip

Maybe you’re alone in the car and the time you’re spending driving is time for reflection, introspection, and chill vibes. Whether trying to filter out the distractions of a daily commute or cruising the coast, Indie Rock Road Trip is a super light, deeply pleasant mix perfect for feeling the vibes. Warning: deep thoughts may wander into your brain while listening.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DWUoqEG4WY6ce?si=9deee0b245ca439f

"A special “Thank You” to you. From what I was told, you never let my daughter put her guard down. Good for you.

I appreciate all the hard work and dedication you’ve given to my daughter. I will recommend Valley Driving School to as many people as I can.

Again, “Thank You” to everyone. Who knows…maybe my daughter will be back for other types of drivers training ie: motorcycle, standard, or even semi-trucks. Could happen. She ‘loves’ to drive.

Best regards"

"I just wanted to send along a “Thank You” to all of you at Valley Driving School.

This has been a great experience for both my daughter and myself.

The office staff have been wonderful and always willing and able to sort through scheduling that works for us.

It can be a scary world out there driving our streets and now I know my daughter has been taught properly on how to handle those situations.

She’s a confident relaxed driver and I am a confident relaxed passenger/parent."

"We just wanted to tell you how impressed we were with the professional and thorough instruction our children received over the last several years.

Both kids' instructors were always punctual, polite and patient, giving our kids the knowledge and confidence to drive well and safely. Both passed their 'N' test on the first try. All dealings with the office staff were pleasant as well.

We would not hesitate to recommend Valley Driving to other parents looking for the right place for their children to learn to drive. Please pass our compliments and thanks to instructor! :)

THANK YOU!!!"

~The Wilson Family

"I want to thank my great instructor and helping me overcome my fear of driving.

I have failed the test a couple of times before taking lessons with him and frankly, this is the best investment I have done lately.

He helped me become a better driver, (I will always remember: mirror-signal-shoulder check), have confidence in myself and pass my test.

Great job! Thank you!"

"Amazing staff!!

I had 5 lessons with my Instructor and he was incredible, clear instructions and always updated on things I needed to do better right when they happened.

It felt like he wanted me to succeed not only because its part of his job, but because he genuinely wanted me to. The cost of the lessons were minimal in comparison to everything I have learned and I passed my road test on my first attempt.

Thanks again!"

"My instructor is kind and patient.

She made me feel comfortable behind the wheel and shaped me into the N driver I am today.

Everyone at Valley Driving School is really nice and welcoming. Also, the classroom is a good learning environment.

I highly recommend this driving school. Everyone I know got lessons there. :)"

Having a great Spotify playlist name is important for several reasons:

  • It helps draw in more listeners if your playlist is public.
  • It makes it easy to identify different playlists and know exactly what to listen to.
  • It can tell you what vibe it will give you by just glancing at the word (or words) it contains.

That said, here are some tips you can follow to create good playlist names:

  • Use Spotify playlist name generators: Though playlist name generators like Chosic and Vadoo might not give you a perfect name on each try, using a playlist name generator can give you ideas to refine to arrive at the ideal title for your playlist.
  • Keep the title brief: Spotify can only fit up to 100 characters for a playlist name. But it will cut off the title at about 40 characters. Keeping your title short and snappy will make it easier to read , and you won’t risk your playlist name getting cut off .
  • Include the genre: Including it in your playlist title can clarify its contents better.
  • Use descriptive language: Don’t limit yourself to bland titles! You don’t need to just describe the tracks in your playlist. What does the music remind you of?
  • Make it funny: Adding a joke or pun to a playlist title will surely make it catchier and more memorable .
  • Brainstorm: Grab a piece of paper and jot down your ideas. When you’ve got everything right in front of you, it’s easier to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
  • Ask for feedback: Run your ideas past your family and friends. They might be able to objectively see what’s working and what’s not and contribute some of their own ideas.
  • Take inspiration from other playlists: Which curated playlists do you listen to? Look at the format they use, and think about what made you choose those playlists in the first place.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment: if you’re looking for regular listeners, you shouldn’t change the name of your playlist too often as it makes the playlist trickier to find. However, there’s no reason why you can’t take a little time to experiment with what playlist name works for you.
  • Choose from our list and customize: If you can’t find a name that works for you from this list, you can customize them! Find a name with the format you like, then change it to suit your playlist’s genre, mood, or season.

Using a unique and tailored name adds a personal touch to a Spotify playlist. The right words indicate what the user can expect. It is also a great way to differentiate your playlists and grab more eyeballs.

Hopefully, this article has given you the perfect playlist name and a few extra for future playlists! You can also now easily change Spotify playlist names on your mobile or desktop.

If you’re looking for a more energetic and positive playlist to vibe to, try some R&B and Hip-Hop. This is the best category by far, since it has everything from R&B tracks, to Trap, to Hip-Hop. If you’re feeling down and want to feel empowered, this is the playlist for you.

Take a minute to think back to the first playlist you ever made for someone. Whether it was a  mixtape  you recorded yourself or a burned CD you doodled your crush’s name on in Sharpie, a good playlist feels like it can say anything . With the help of streaming services like Spotify , it’s easier than ever to pick the right playlist to get your message across.

While Spotify gives you the ability to make personal playlists on the fly, the popular streaming service also offers its own set of playlists for virtually every occasion, mood, feeling, and artist, as well a wide selection of playlists within each music genre.

You can easily waste time perusing through thousands of options, but you certainly don’t have to. Here’s our list of the best playlists on Spotify today for every mood.

The best Spotify playlists

1)  insecure soundtrack – seasons 1 & 2.

best spotify playlists : insecure

Late last year, RCA released the official soundtrack for season 1 of Insecure , Issa Rae’s breakout HBO comedy. And while it boasts some incredible tracks, like Moses Sumney’s “Plastic” and Thundercat’s “Heartbreaks + Setbacks,” it failed to capture the pulse of the show, if only because

it’s limited to 16 tracks. Insecure has the best music supervision in television, thanks to some help in season 1 from Solange and overall guidance from Raphael Saadiq, and this running Spotify playlist collects every single song that appears on the show. The best part? It’s updating weekly with new tracks from the second season. — Austin Powell

2) undercurrents

best spotify playlists : undercurrents

This mellow playlist is curated with the best up-and-coming indie-alternative songs you definitely won’t catch playing on mainstream radio stations. “undercurrents” is an eclectic mix of music that will lift your spirits and make you catch all of the feels at the same time. The playlist is frequently updated with new releases so you won’t get tired of the same old tracks. — Kristen Hubby

3)  Big Little Lies Soundtrack

spotify playlists

You don’t have to have seen the HBO miniseries to appreciate this soundtrack, but if you, you already know why it’s on the list. From the Michael Kiwanuka theme song to the deep Elvis Cuts, Harvest Moon -era Neil Young and modern R&B, it’s got something for everyone. — A.P.

4) Dreampop/Shoegaze/Lo-Fi Buffet

best playlists on spotify : day wave

This extensive playlist by Spotify user Chris Chan is your go-to for a solid mix of bedroom pop and indie music. Created in 2011, the playlist has a collection of tracks that will send you into a pleasant trance. Best listened to on shuffle in order to mix up all the gems from the past six years. — K.H.

5)  Played by Jamie xx

Need to just put your head down and work? Might I recommend this regularly updated playlist by Jamie xx of the xx? It’s a deep collection of dance club tracks and fractured soul music, and at over 17 hours and counting, it’ll keep you going for days. — A.P.

6) Cali Fire

best spotify playlists

The West Coast has a long and storied history in hip-hop, but this Spotify playlist focuses on more recent hits. “Cali Fire” is exactly what its title presumes, laced with modern bangers like “HUMBLE.” from Kendrick Lamar ‘s newest album   DAMN.  alongside jams like “San Francisco Anthem” by San Quinn . — K.H.

7)  Pitchfork: The 200 Best Songs of the 1980s

Pitchfork’s guide to the 200 best songs of the 1980s isn’t just a definitive list. It’s a crash course in the biggest and most influential hits of the decade. If you think the ‘80s were all hair metal and Michael Jackson, you have a lot to learn. Culled together into a Spotify playlist, it clocks in at just under 15 hours, and there’s bound to be at least a few tracks you’ve never heard or nearly forgot about. — A.P.

8) I’m with the banned

best spotify playlists

“I’m with the banned” confronts the travel ban implemented by President Donald Trump  head on through music. This Spotify original series paired artists from the seven countries affected by the executive order with American musicians like Desiigner and BJ The Chicago Kid in Toronto. The collaboration produced an album’s worth of original music, each accompanied by a short film introducing the artists and their stories.

9)  Danger Mouse Jukebox

spotify playlists : Danger Mouse Jukebox

There’s a chance you don’t know Danger Mouse by name (he’s born Brian Burton), but you surely know his work. He’s one half of Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells, and the producer behind some of the best albums of the last decade, including three records by the Black Keys. This evolving playlist gives some insight into his signature sound—that moody, wobbly swirl of sweaty R&B and intoxicated rock & roll. — A.P.

best spotify playlists

A graphic designer from Brooklyn, Marleigh Culver takes her creative approach to her work and puts it into a playlist. “P.E.” is a mixture of alternative pop-indie and atmospheric tracks with artists like Yumi Zouma and Wild Nothing that will leave you feeling sensual and free. — K.H.

11) 50 Great Female Voices

best spotify playlists

Name more iconic musicians than Sade, Whitney Houston Screengrab via YouTube , or Amy Winehouse —we’ll wait. These women have taken the music world into their own hands, broken boundaries, and gracefully endured an industry with impossible standards—all while singing beautifully. This sultry playlist will calm the soul and remind you that true talent doesn’t have to emerge from behind a DJ booth.  — K.H.

12) 90s Top 999

best playlists on spotify

According to this playlist’s creator, Spotify user cannondale12, we have had “more than enough time to filter out all the stuff that was actually a bit crap” from our ’90s repertoire. Flashback to the grunge ’90s with this essential collection of grunge-rock and classic hip-hop. From Soundgarden to the Pixies and Fatboy Slim, this playlist will surely bring back the nostalgic feeling of ripped flannel shirts and way too many cigarettes.  — K.H.

13) Latino Caliente

best spotify playlists

Thanks in huge part to “ Despacito “—which is now the most streamed track of all time —“Latino Caliente” by Filtr Espa ña is a massive hit and a must for any party. However, this playlist is more than a botched Justin Bieber remix. If you want to pay proper tribute to the revolutionary and rising stars of reggaeton like J Balvin, Maluma, and more, give this list a listen. — K.H.

14) Evening Acoustic

best playlists on spotify

Nothing is more soothing than Iron & Wine and the sweet, sad crooning of Sufjan Stevens’ voice when you’re winding down (or feeling a little down) after a long day. “Evening Acoustic” is your go-to when you need to break the silence with soft music, usually paired with a glass of wine or a good book.

15) Blonded by Frank Ocean

best spotify playlists : frank ocean

When Frank Ocean isn’t creating new music or visual art, he’s keeping his fans happy with exclusive curated playlists from his Beats 1 radio show “blonded RADIO.” Since his show is only available on Apple Music, Ocean decided to be nice and create a playlist for Spotify users. “Blonded” features artists ranging from Japanese Breakfast to 21 Savage to mix things up a bit.

16)  Discover Weekly

Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” playlist should be bookmarked on every account. The playlist is tailored to each user’s preferences and listening habits—so if you’ve just spent a week shamelessly blasting show tunes, don’t be surprised when they reappear here. Most of the time, Discover Weekly is surprisingly in tune with your taste and can lead you to fresh finds you may not have heard otherwise. This playlist is updated with a new slate of songs every Monday, so be sure to save your favorites before they’re gone.

The Amplifier

St. vincent’s 10 (or, actually 11) essential songs.

Sample her seven daring and eclectic albums as her latest, “All Born Screaming,” arrives.

A horizontal line made up of orange slashes.

By Lindsay Zoladz

Dear listeners,

One afternoon in late February, my editor Caryn asked if I might be interested in profiling St. Vincent ahead of her new album “All Born Screaming.” I said that I probably wasn’t — though I have long been a fan, my early spring schedule was quite full and the reporting would require a short-notice trip to Los Angeles — but that I would give the album a spin on the way home from work, just to see if it would change my mind. By the fourth track, I was searching flights to L.A.

I’m so glad I took that assignment . Annie Clark (St. Vincent’s real name) was generous with her time and her explanations of her creative process, and I came away with a new appreciation of her work ethic. An accomplished songwriter, guitarist and producer, Clark is palpably fascinated by sound and how it is created, and it was revealing to see the way her eyes lit up when she was in the studio, surrounded by various mics and vintage consoles. At one point, when we were discussing some aspect of engineering, she stopped herself, remembering that this was an interview, and said, “That stuff’s kind of boring to a reader.” But I encouraged her to go on, because I could tell it was incredibly interesting to her , and I hoped that it would be illuminating for listeners to learn exactly what made Clark geek out. Even if those things are mic shootouts, modular synthesizers and the mechanics of signal flow.

We also discussed the long, improbable arc of her career, during which she’s gone from a coy indie darling to a mainstream-adjacent provocateur. “I’m curious, so I’ll say yes to things that are like, ‘I don’t know if I can do that,’ or, ‘I don’t know what this kind of music is like, let me find out,’” Clark told me. “So all those things have led me to crazy places that I’ve never expected.”

Today’s playlist is a map of some of those unexpected places: a collection of my 11 favorite St. Vincent songs, spread across her seven daring and eclectic albums, and featuring a few quotes from my interviews with Clark that did not make it into the profile. You’ll find tracks from her incomparable 2011 release “Strange Mercy,” her boldly slick 2017 LP “Masseduction” and more. I almost settled for 10 songs, but in classic Amplifier fashion, I added one more at the last minute. To make me choose between “Prince Johnny” and “Happy Birthday, Johnny” would have been cru-u-uellll .

Seeing double beats not seeing one of you,

Listen along while you read.

1. “now, now”.

This prickling, harmonic-kissed leadoff track from Clark’s 2007 debut LP, “Marry Me,” was the first St. Vincent song I heard, and I found its off-kilter tunefulness enchanting. Like much of the work she’d make in years to come, “Now, Now” revels in the precise moment when beauty begins to curdle into eeriness. ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

The cover art for “Strange Mercy” — still my favorite St. Vincent album — depicts Clark’s open mouth plastered in some kind of a latex-like material, as if to trap a gasp or a scream in midair. A similar airlessness suffuses the single “Cruel,” which features a taut, blurted guitar riff and a gradually building sense of unease — albeit the kind you can dance to.

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

3. “Prince Johnny”

Johnny is a recurring, possibly fictitious character in the St. Vincent catalog, often standing in as a brash, troubled foil to Clark’s narrator. (“Johnny’s just Johnny,” she said once, when asked about the character’s identity. “Doesn’t everyone know a Johnny?”) Here, on this affecting and atmospheric highlight from St. Vincent’s 2014 self-titled album, he’s an intimate but sometimes indifferent friend, to whom Clark sings in a particularly wrenching moment: “I wanna mean more than I mean to you.”

4. “Broken Man”

This wonderfully abrasive track from “All Born Screaming” features percussion from Dave Grohl and a crunching, industrial-tinged sound that compels Clark to holler herself hoarse. As she told me in one of our conversations, putting this track out as the album’s lead single was, for once, a no-brainer. “Other records, I’ve been like, ‘Oh that could be good, or this could be good for people to hear first,’” she said. But for “All Born Screaming,” “I felt very adamant that ‘Broken Man’ was first. Let’s throw some TNT.”

5. “Masseduction”

St. Vincent’s 2017 album “Masseduction,” featuring production by Jack Antonoff, was in some ways her sleekest and most pop-friendly, but as the title track shows, it still oozed with her own strange style. “I can’t turn off what turns me on,” Clark intones on this cartoonish exploration of desire and repulsion, while her expressive guitar growls and shrieks.

6. “Marrow”

St. Vincent’s second album, the 2009 release “Actor,” further warped the eerie beauty of “Marry Me,” as you can hear on this highlight, which blends a refrain reminiscent of a nursery rhyme with the asphyxiating mood of a horror film. A tiny sonic detail I love here: the physicality of the keyboard’s creak on that riff right after the first chorus.

7. “Live in the Dream”

The campy and chameleonic “Daddy’s Home,” from 2021, is probably St. Vincent’s most polarizing release, and while I was mixed on the album overall, I do love this bit of drifting, Pink Floyd-inspired psychedelia. Even if it’s pastiche, Clark pulls it off with aplomb.

8. “Surgeon”

This “Strange Mercy” track takes its chorus lyric from a line Marilyn Monroe once scrawled in her journal: “Best finest surgeon … come cut me open.” (Clark once said she wanted the song “to sound like it was kind of in a Benzedrine and white-wine coma — like a housewife’s cocktail.”) St. Vincent’s music often interrogates both femininity and depression, and those themes entwine here with haunting effectiveness, culminating in a gloriously unnerving guitar solo.

9. “Happy Birthday, Johnny”

This wry, devastating piano ballad cuts through the polish of “Masseduction” and aims straight for the heart. “Remember one Christmas I gave you Jim Carroll?/Intended it as a cautionary tale,” Clark sings, setting the scene like a short-story writer. “You said you saw yourself inside there/Dog-eared it like a how-to manual.”

10. “The Power’s Out”

When I asked about this creepily vivid apocalypse song, Clark told me, “I’ll be totally transparent: That’s my ‘Five Years’ for 2024,” making a reference to the David Bowie song. In some sense, Clark said, the song taps into a timeless fear: “Every generation, every religion, every culture has its Armageddon. Every generation thinks it will be the last. I think that’s our inability to reckon with death. Like, how could we leave and the world keeps on spinning? It must be that the world is going to end.”

11. “Severed Crossed Fingers”

Finally, this closing track from St. Vincent’s self-titled album borrows its striking, bleakly ironic title phrase from the author Lorrie Moore’s short-story collection “Birds of America.” “When you’re calling ain’t calling back to you,” Clark sings affectionately, “I’ll be side stage mouthing lines for you.” It’s a fitting encapsulation of Clark’s overall outlook, which she described to me as “optimism with an asterisk.”
