Spireon 2022

Spireon , a  Solera  company, in partnership with the nonprofit Choose Outdoors, is launching its annual real-time tracking of the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree as it travels this holiday season. The tree will be harvested from the National Forests in North Carolina and end its journey on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. Spireon’s FleetLocate ®   trailer management solution will track the tree’s GPS location and you can follow it at Capitoltreetracker.com .

“Being part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree’s journey is always a highlight of the year for us,” said  Roni Taylor , SVP Strategy and Business Development of Spireon. “We’re thrilled to support this unique tradition that celebrates both the season and our nation’s forests. The joy this event spreads throughout communities is always inspiring, and we are so proud our products get to be a part of it.”

Every year since 1970, the USDA Forest Service has provided a tree from one of our national forests to be placed on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol building. This year, a 78-foot tall Red Spruce will be sourced from the forested slopes of Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina.

The official send-off will take place at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher, North Carolina on November 5. A series of community celebrations will be held as the tree makes its way through the region, making stops in North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Well-wishers will have a chance to sign banners on the truck’s sides, learn more about national forests, and shop for U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree merchandise. The tour will culminate with the official tree lighting on the Capitol’s West Lawn on November 18.

Spireon’s FL Flex 2 telematics device was chosen because of its versatile functionality and ability to support a wide range of assets. Spireon is uniquely able to track any type of trailer from dry vans and refrigerated trailers to the specialty flatbed needed to ship oversized cargo like the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. By live tracking the tree’s journey with GPS, Spireon provides a means for local communities along the tree’s whistle-stop route to line the streets and welcome the tree as it passes through.

2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to be Harvested Nov. 2

US Capitol Christmas Tree 2022 - RGB - WIDER

After almost a year of planning, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, a 78-foot red spruce affectionately called “Ruby,” will be harvested from the Pisgah National Forest in a virtual ceremony on Nov. 2, 2022, at 11 AM. The ceremony will include a musical performance by Woody Platt and Shannon Whitworth, and the Cherokee Legend of the Evergreen Trees told by this year’s Youth Tree Lighter, Coche Tiger, a citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

The ceremony will be live-streamed on the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree’s Facebook page at 11 a.m., located at facebook.com/uscapitolchristmastree.

Following the ceremony, the tree will be harvested by Rodney Smith, a 30-year employee of the Uhwarrie National Forest, using a STIHL chainsaw. With support from Dover Crane and Barlett Tree Experts, the Red Spruce will be carefully maneuvered into placement on a flatbed trailer provided by Hale Trailer. The tree will be transported by a specially decaled Kenworth T680 driven by Ed Kingdon, Jr and Deb Kingdon of North Carolina-based carrier Hardy Brothers Trucking.

After the harvest, Ruby will get ready to hit the road for a 14-day long tour from the Pisgah National Forest to Washington, D. C. With support from partners, including presenting sponsor 84 Lumber, the tree will make several stops along the way to celebrate with North Carolina communities “from the mountains to the sea,” before arriving to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The tour starts with a Harvest Celebration at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center on November 5 from 3:00 p.m. – 5 p.m. For a complete list of times and stops, visit www.uscapitolchristmastree.com.

The red spruce that will adorn the West Lawn represents an iconic tree species for southern Appalachia. As part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree program, the U.S. Forest Service is partnering with the National Forest Foundation to raise funds for a new state-of-the-art nursery that will grow red spruce seedlings for reforestation efforts. The Forest Service has contributed $50,000, and the National Forest Foundation is raising $200,000 more.

Someday that greenhouse will contain the seedlings of Ruby. A team of foresters collected cones from Ruby, which contain seeds grown into seedlings that will contribute to the next generation of red spruce trees growing across the southern Appalachian region.

The nursery will be managed by the Southern Highlands Reserve, a nationally recognized nonprofit arboretum and research center. This organization has embarked upon the epic task of raising 50,000 red spruce trees to be planted on public lands in North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee, and Virginia, where they have already planted more than 6,000 trees. Other partners in these restoration efforts include The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

A Kenworth T680 Next Generation, adorned with a newly installed special graphics design, will soon transport the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the National Forests in North Carolina to the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building.

This year’s tour theme, “From the Mountains to the Sea,” along with “From the National Forests in North Carolina,” are prominently displayed on the truck’s driver and passenger sides. The design also features the U.S. Capitol Building, U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, and a background of the sunset overlooking the Pisgah National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains. The 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree logo is displayed on the roof.

Catcuce Micco Tiger selected as Youth Tree Lighter

Coche Tiger

When Ruby, the Red Spruce from the Pisgah National Forest, is lit on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol this holiday, 4th grader Catcuce Micco Tiger (Coche) will do the honors.

Catcuce Micco Tiger (Coche) is the son of Katie and Catcuce Tiger. He is nine years old and is a citizen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), located in Cherokee, NC. He has a six-year-old brother named Sha-li-gu-gi, which means snapping turtle in Cherokee.

Coche also has ancestry from the Seminole Tribe of Florida and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He gets his name from his dad, which is a Seminole name. Catcuce means ‘Little Tiger’, Micco means ‘Leader/Chief’ in the Creek language.

Why is the environment important to Cherokee culture? Cherokee culture is very important to me. I attend New Kituwah Academy, where I am learning to read, write and speak the Cherokee language. I am also a member of the Raven Rock stomp grounds in the Big Cove community. I love stomp dance because it is what our ancestors once did to pray and show appreciation for everything we have. We go to stomp to help renew ourselves and help the earth renew herself. So, we need a clean and healthy environment to honor what the creator has given us.

Our environment is so important because my ancestors lived on this land, and I want to take care of it like they did. Also, the animals live in the environment, and I want to take care of them because they are related to me.

Why do you want to be the youth tree lighter? I want to go to Washington, D.C. to light the tree so I can represent the Tribe and my community and so everyone can have a good year. I also want to see where the president lives and maybe meet him.

Coche will share his Cherokee introduction and the following story during various events in North Carolina and Washington, D.C.

ᏏᏲ  ᏂᎦᏓ, ᎣᏣᎵᎮᎵᎭ  ᏥᏤᏙᎭ. ᎧᏥ  ᏓᏆᏙᎠ ᏃᎴ  ᏥᎩᏚᏩᎩ  ᏃᎴ  ᏐᏁᎳ  ᎢᏯᏆᏕᏘᏴᏓ. ᏅᎩᏁᎢ  ᏫᏥᏯ ᎠᏤ ᎩᏚᏩ  ᏗᏕᎶᏆᏍᏗ.  ᎦᏯᎴᏂ  ᎠᏆᏛᏒ. ᏥᏍᏉᎯ  ᏗᏇᏅᏒᎢ. ᏗᎬᎩᎦᏴᎵ  ᎨᏗ  ᏃᎴ  ᏨᏓᏥ  ᏚᎾᏙᎠ. ᏦᏍᏓᏢᏅᏥ  ᏌᎵᎫᎩ  ᏚᏙᎠ.

Hello everyone, I am glad we all are here. My name is Catcuce, I am a gi-du-wa person, and I am nine years old. I am in the 4th grade at New Kituwah Academy.  I am from North Carolina. My home is in Birdtown (Tsi-sgwo-hi) community. My parents’ names are Katie and Catcuce. My brother’s name is Sha-li-gu-gi.

The Cherokee Legend of the Evergreen Trees

The forest contains two types of trees: evergreen, which keep their leaves and remain green all year, and deciduous, which lose their leaves in autumn. Cherokees explain how this came to be:

When all the trees, plants, and animals were created, they were asked to stay awake to fast and pray for seven nights to honor the Creator. The first night they all stayed awake, but the second night some fell asleep; the third night more dropped out, and so on. By the seventh night, only a few were still awake. Of the animals, the owl (u-gu-gu), the panther (tsv-da-tsi), and a few others were still awake. These animals were given the power to see and go about in the dark and make prey of the birds and animals that must sleep at night. Of the trees, only the cedar, the pine, the spruce, the holly, the hemlock, and the laurel were awake to the end. The Creator gave these trees the ability to keep their leaves and stay green all year round and gave them special power to be medicine for the Cherokee people. Therefore, these trees are sacred and used for medicine by the Cherokee people to this day.   (This is an abbreviated version that will be expanded for the actual reading during events.)

Partner spotlight: Bartlett Tree Experts lend expertise to Tree selection, harvest

Bartlett PF_March 2022-6335

Bartlett Tree Experts is excited to be a part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Project this year. For the past eight months, Bartlett arborists have played an important role in assessing and selecting potential tree candidates. Bartlett ISA Certified Arborist John Wayne Hardison says, “Initially when the Forest Service reached out to me last winter to discuss our help with harvesting and crane work with the tree, I was happy to be involved.  Our role has evolved and grown over the past few months, and I’m even more excited to be helping in a scientific and consultative role for this project. Bartlett has been the leader in scientific tree care for over a century. Our arboricultural knowledge and research lab resources are a perfect fit for contributing to this enjoyable and exciting project.”

In addition to tree health and appearance, tree structure and branch habits are essential in picking the right tree. Like the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree, homeowners should consider meeting with an ISA Certified Arborist to assess their trees for health and safety. The holiday season is the perfect time to evaluate many tree-branching structures for defects and safety issues. According to Hardison, winter is often one of the busiest times in Western NC for caring for clients’ trees, as it’s when they do a lot of pruning and preventive care. With most leaves off the trees, trained arborists can quickly identify pruning and cabling needs in a tree’s canopy.

“We’re excited to contribute to this project and think it’s an excellent opportunity to showcase some of our knowledge and scientific capabilities.”

Thank you to Bartlett Tree Experts for supporting Ruby and the Forest Service team this year.

Rodney Smith named Sawyer to harvest 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree

Rodney Smith named Sawyer to harvest 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree

When the 78’-tall Red Spruce nicknamed “Ruby” is harvested from the National Forests in North Carolina in early November, longtime Forest Service employee, Rodney Smith, will have the honor of felling the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree.

Smith has worked on the Uwharrie National Forest – one of four forests that make up the National Forests in North Carolina – for the entirety of his 30-year career. Beginning as a Timber Marker in 1992, he now serves on the Timber Management Team as the Timber Sale Administrator, overseeing timber harvesting for the Uwharrie.

“I am happy just to be part of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree project and am incredibly honored to be the one to harvest this year’s tree!”

Asked about his favorite tree found in the forests, Smith names the white oak, as it is a beautiful tree that provides food and shelter for wildlife and has many uses when harvested.

And his favorite place in the forest? The Pleasant Grove area, just south of Troy, NC. The Forest Service has done extensive longleaf pine restoration there in the last few years, and he appreciates seeing the benefits of the work.

“Smith has dedicated his career to the careful care and management of trees in North Carolina’s forests,” said James Melonas, Forest Supervisor for the National Forests in North Carolina. “We recognize his longstanding contributions to our agency and community by proudly sharing this honor with him.”

Following the harvest, Smith will join Ruby on the road, participating in community celebrations planned between North Carolina and Washington, D.C. View the 2022 tour here and say hello!

84 Lumber Donates $10,000 to MANNA FoodBank in Asheville, NC

Eighty Four, PA (September 29, 2022) – 84 Lumber, the nation’s largest privately held building materials supplier, has donated $10,000 to the Asheville-based MANNA FoodBank to shine a spotlight on Hunger Awareness Month. As the presenting sponsor of the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree, harvested from nearby Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, 84 Lumber has delivered an early Christmas gift to MANNA FoodBank, located in Asheville, North Carolina.

Every year since 1964, a different national forest has been selected to provide a tree for the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol for the holiday season. The name ‘People’s Tree’ reflects the nickname for the U.S. House of Representatives, the People’s House. The 2022 tree will come from the Pisgah National Forest near Asheville, and 84 Lumber will be among those tracking the tree’s journey from North Carolina to Washington, D.C.

On September 29 th , 84 Lumber Asheville Store Manager, Ryan Adair presented the MANNA FoodBank with a $10,000 check just in time for the holiday season. “As a presenting sponsor of the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, 84 Lumber is honored to bring an early Christmas gift to the Asheville community,” said Ryan Adair. “We are excited that this donation will serve many people right here in our neighborhood, especially around the holiday season.”

MANNA FoodBank is a private, not-for-profit service organization working to end food insecurity in the 16 counties of Western North Carolina, including the Qualla Boundary. MANNA links the food industry to over 200 partner pantries and other human service organizations to get food to thousands of families’ tables. MANNA is an acronym and stands for Mountain Area Nutritional Needs Alliance and is a member of Feeding America [feedingamerica.org] , the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization.

Officials with MANNA say this time of year is a particularly tough time for families struggling to get by. “This is the time of year where most nonprofits see an increase in needs for local families and we are grateful for partners like 84 Lumber,” said Olivia Onderlinde, Corporate Engagement Manager at MANNA FoodBank. “This generous gift will provide 40,000 meals ahead of holiday need.”

National Forests in North Carolina reach and exceed goal of 6,000 ornaments for the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree

Ornaments Collage

Asheville, NC September 21, 2022 – We did it! With help from North Carolinians across the state, our valued partners, and our committed employees, the National Forests in North Carolina reached and exceeded our goal of 6,000 ornaments for the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree. Over the course of 6 months, we received over 7,500 ornaments that will adorn “The People’s Tree” on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol and other trees across Washington D.C., showcased through the 2022 holiday season.

These ornaments represent over 125 local communities, Forest Service employees, families and friends, and neighbors from thirteen other states. In this sense, the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree truly embodies “The People’s Tree”.

Ornaments were decorated and donated by schools, communities, and civic organizations across North Carolina, as well as partner agencies and organizations and hundreds of members of the public. Dozens of outreach and education events featured forestry lessons and ornament making activities. Local artists donated ornaments or provided materials and expertise to make ornaments.

“I am amazed that we reached our goal early, but I guess I really shouldn’t be surprised that North Carolinians, and our friends and neighbors, rallied for the cause,” said Sheryl Bryan, U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree ornaments coordinator. “I am immensely proud of the people of North Carolina and of the ornaments on this year’s trees. Each one of them has been touched with love and pride of the ‘Old North State’.”

Now that we have reached our ornament goal, it’s time to take the show on the road. As the 78′ Red Spruce makes the journey from the Pisgah National Forest to Washington D.C. it will make several stops along the way to celebrate with North Carolina communities “from the mountains to the sea”, before arriving at the West Lawn of the Capitol. The tour will kick-off with a Harvest Celebration at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center on November 5 from 3pm-5pm. For a full list of tour stops visit  click here .

If you didn’t have the opportunity to make an ornament for the Capitol Tree, you can still make an ornament for your tree. Two ornament templates are available on the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree website to download and easily make at home. View the ornament templates  here .

The Tree will be harvested from the National Forests in North Carolina in early November, followed by a journey with special events in communities along the way before being delivered to Washington, D.C. U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to Visit North Carolina Zoo During 2022 Tour

ASHEBORO, N.C. (Nov. 7, 2022) – Each year, a different national forest provides a tree to light up the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season. The National Forests in North Carolina, in partnership with nonprofit partner Choose Outdoors, will bring the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the Pisgah Forest to Washington, D.C., including a special appearance at the North Carolina Zoo Nov. 10 from 10 a.m . – 12 p.m.

The 78-foot-tall Red Spruce was harvested from the Pisgah National Forest in early November and prepared for the nearly 1,000-mile expedition. The journey will include a series of outdoor community celebrations before being delivered to the U.S. Capitol on Nov. 18, where it will be decorated with handmade ornaments and tree skirts specially created by North Carolinians. Festivities during the tree’s visit to the North Carolina Zoo on Nov. 10 will include remarks by Zoo and public officials, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and hot cocoa and cookies. The event will be in the North America Parking Lot by Solar Pointe picnic area and is free to the public (but does not include free admission to the Zoo).

“We are honored that the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree will visit the North Carolina Zoo on its journey from North Carolina to Washington, D.C.,” said N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Deputy Secretary Jeff Michael. “Visiting the North Carolina Zoo is a family tradition at any time of year, but we are thrilled to add the joy of hosting the ‘People’s Tree’ to inspire our guests for the upcoming holiday season.

“We are beyond grateful for the host cities who play such a vital role in bringing the tree across the country,” said James Melonas, Forest Supervisor, National Forests in North Carolina.
