Depeche Mode pays tribute to Andy Fletcher at “Memento Mori” tour opener — setlist, video

Depeche Mode opened its massive tour in support of new album Memento Mori in Sacramento, California, on Thursday night, performing a 23-song setlist that included five tracks off the new record, a song not aired in more than a decade — and a fitting tribute to the departed Andy Fletcher .

Dave Gahan and Martin Gore opened the set — you can see full setlist and video from the show below — with the first two songs off Memento Mori (“My Cosmos Is Mine,” “Wagging Tongue”) before segueing into a run of ’90s-era songs (“It’s No Good,” “Walking In My Shoes,” “Sister of Night,” “In Your Room”).

The show, as is customary for DM, didn’t stray too far back into the early ’80s, only including a couple pre- Black Celebration songs (“Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Everything Counts”)..

The traditional two-song interlude by Gore featured the first performance of “A Question of Lust” since 2017 — and first full-band performance since 2013 — plus the debut of “Soul With Me” off Memento Mori , which is released today. During the encore, Gahan and Gore teamed up to duet Violator standout “Waiting For the Night,” the first time that song has been performed by Depeche Mode since 2009.

And, fittingly, the two surviving members of Depeche Mode paid tribute to Fletcher, who died of an aortic dissection last year, with “World in My Eyes.” During the song, giant photos of Fletcher were projected on the screen behind the group. “Our friend, Andrew Fletcher,” Gahan said at the song’s conclusion.

The tour continues Saturday night in San Jose, California, the second of 10 North American dates before the group heads to Europe for a lengthy run of shows through August. A second, longer North American leg picks up in September and runs through December, ending with four nights in Los Angeles.

Below, check out the full setlist, a bunch of video — and the rest of Depeche Mode’s tour dates.

It was a fantastic show! Of course, the crowd was going nuts, but Dave and Martin seemed so energized from the get-go and never let up. That’s Dave in general, but this felt like another level. Honestly, I was a tad apprehensive about how things might go being the opening date and the first full show after Andy’s passing, but they were in stellar form from the start. Great setlist, including having “Walking in My Shoes” early on versus as an encore like before. And I thought the tribute to Andy was perfect. We knew that was coming, but I didn’t think it would be “World in My Eyes.” Dave facing the images of Andy at the end of the song was very moving. I hope to catch another show on the second NA leg, as this tour already feels like something very special.

Thanks for posting these videos Matt. Been looking forward to tonight’s show in San Jose for months and then yesterday I test positive for fucking covid, ugh. At least they’re coming back around to San Francisco in December.

Wish the so called leaked set list was the real set list. We would have gotten nothing useless but not tonight flys on the wind screen The set list is currently very similar to the last tour for the non new album songs

A lot of us donated a lung to attend; I wish the sound was better, and they played more pre 1990. The merch was insanely expensive!

There is no bad DM concert. Its a magical experience, but the ticket master price fiasco, so so set list, bad sound, and ridiculous merch pricing left us a bit sour.

Prior tours, they threw us a Bone. Like But Not Tonight on piano with Martin, Photogenic, some awesome acoustic sets with Martin. Some classics pre 90. There was only 4 songs before Violator. The band needs to bring back Behind The Wheel, maybe Rote 66 to follow? That was the best in 1990! Play Shake The Disease, again…

Kudos for leaving out lack luster Exciter, Delta Machine, or Spirit music that puts me to sleep.

They played World in My Eyes in dedication to Andy Fletcher because it was his favorite song. ❤️

Memento Mori has debuted at No.14 on US Billboard, 36k…ouch.

Depeche Mode: Memento Mori

Depeche Mode frontman, Dave Gahan, once said of his bandmate, chief songwriter, Martin Gore, that he only ever pens lyrics about three subjects: death, pain and suffering.

Death hangs over this record – their fifteenth studio album – more so than ever, because it’s the first one the group, now a duo, have made without fellow member, Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher, who died in 2022. The title, Memento Mori, is a Latin phrase meaning ‘Remember you must die,’ but, ironically, the album was named and written before Fletcher’s passing.

Depeche Mode reunited with producer, James Ford, who was at the controls for 2017’s Spirit, which was the band’s most political record, but suffered from a lack of great and memorable songs.

The 12-track Memento Mori brings with it a sadness due to the circumstances in which it was made, but the good news is that it’s mostly a return to form – in fact, it’s the best album Depeche Mode have made since 1997’s brilliant and underrated Ultra, which was created in the wake of Gahan’s near-fatal drug overdose.

It isn’t a perfect record – the first half is stronger than the second and some of the songs, like the chugging ‘Always You’ and the dizzying ‘Never Let Me Go’, need repeated listening to sink in. Memento Mori would be a stronger album without them.

Opener, ‘My Cosmos Is Mine’, is a brilliant scene setter – creating a foreboding and unsettling atmosphere with its pulsing electronics and spacey synths. Choral-like backing vocals lend it a gothic sci-fi soundtrack feel, and co-producer and engineer, Marta Salogni, has processed Gahan’s and Gore’s vocals through lots of tape, creating otherworldly and psychedelic backwards effects.

‘Wagging Tongue’ – “Watch another angel die” – is a Gore and Gahan co-write. Based on a hypnotic, Kraftwerkesque keyboard part, it sounds a bit like Nick Cave doing Yazoo.

First single, the sublime pop of ‘Ghosts Again’, one of four songs Gore has written with Richard Butler of The Psychedelic Furs, manages to be both melancholy and uplifting at the same time.

Built on a trademark Gore guitar hook, it evokes the band’s classic 1990 hit ‘Enjoy The Silence’, as well as the Pet Shop Boys circa Behaviour and New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle.’

‘Don’t Say You Love Me’, another Gore and Butler composition, is wonderful – a dramatic and doomy Scott Walker-style torch song (“You’ll be the killer, I’ll be the corpse”) with James Bond strings and a great vocal performance by Gahan.

The shadowy and throbbing ‘My Favourite Stranger’ occupies more familiar Depeche Mode territory – it’s a jarring electro-industrial track, with squelchy synths and some, occasionally, irritating and upsetting squally sounds, but ‘Soul With Me’ offers some solace – a gorgeous and histrionic, Gore-sung ballad with an angelic arrangement and a touch of smooth ‘80s pop.

The oddly-titled ‘Caroline’s Monkey’, which references drug addiction – “Caroline’s monkey claws at her back, colder than winter, darker than black” – has a weird, mutated disco groove that is strangely reminiscent of Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’.

The final song, ‘Speak To Me’, is an epic interstellar ballad that also touches on narcotics in its lyrics. It sounds like Gahan is addressing the dark times in his past when he sings: “I heard you call my name, lying on the bathroom floor – no one here to blame.”

This is a great-sounding and intriguing album, with some inventive production techniques (some of which are very old indeed) that manages to immerse the listener in warm sonics, but also adds a disturbing edge to some of the songs.

Memento Mori isn’t up there with the band’s crowning glory, 1990’s Violator, and it may be overshadowed by the death of Fletcher, but it’s great to have a Depeche Mode record which sounds like it’s got some new life in it.

Set List: Depeche Mode’s Memento Mori World Tour

Following the sudden passing of founding bandmate Andy Fletcher, English synth-rockers Depeche Mode are touring their 15th album Memento Mori in his honour. “Fletch would have loved this album,” Dave Gahan tells Apple Music. The songs—foreboding, heavy on synthesizers, and full of outsider spirit—were written with Fletcher but weren't recorded until after his death. “We’re sure this is what he would have wanted,” adds bandmate Martin Gore, “and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.” Listen to the show’s full set list here.

Depeche Mode shot by Anton Corbijn

Depeche Mode – ‘Memento Mori’ review: their best work this century

Following the passing of beloved bandmate Andy Fletcher, the now-duo reunite on a touching, resurgent record

Depeche Mode are a band who’ve existed at extremes. On their journey from squeaky-clean popsters to alternative titans they’ve lived a fast, hard life. Lead singer Dave Gahan ’s brushes with death are infamous, including a drug-induced episode in 1996 where his heart stopped beating for two minutes. Similarly dramatic has been their creative timeline too: members like Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder departed at inopportune moments, and creative tension has occasionally simmered between Gahan and fellow co-founder Martin Gore . You can’t make an omelette the size that The ‘Mode have without breaking a few eggs, after all.

But even so, the death of keyboardist Andy Fletcher , aged 60, last year proved gutting. Alongside Gahan and Gore, he was a founding member and played a crucial role in tempering egos and kept the ship sailing. Speaking to NME , Gahan said: “Fletch was going to outlive all of us” and that now that he’s gone “it still doesn’t feel real.” The band were unsure whether they ought to press on with recording ‘Memento Mori’, their 15th record and first in six years. Yet the loss of Fletch would bring Gore and Gahan closer together.

  • Depeche Mode: “Do the best you can – you don’t know if you’re going to be doing it again”

‘Memento Mori’ – which translates from Latin as ‘remember you must die’ – is informed by loss, but also salvation and resurgence. Following the troubled sessions of their last album ‘Spirit’ (2017), and the dynamic that’s seen Gore take on lead songwriting duties and Gahan to occasionally feel creatively stunted, there’s a renewed energy to collaborate and encourage here. Incorporating producer James Ford [Arctic Monkeys, Shame] into proceedings, alongside The Psychedelic Furs’ Richard Butler and co-producer Marta Salogni [Bjork, Frank Ocean], the skeleton crew that recorded the album following Fletch’s passing is a tight and potent one.

The subtle, understated pace of ‘Ghosts Again’ is the sound of two compadres, bound by history to keep moving forward, even if the nihilism shines through: “Time is fleeting / See what it brings” , Gahan sighs. Likewise, on the Gahan-penned ‘Wagging Tongue’ a spritely synth line is undermined by tales from “the great divide” and being forced to “watch another angel die” . They’re almost cloyingly obsessed with the topic, but Gore’s gorgeous delivery on ‘Soul With Me’, a ballad that shares the same aurora and chords as modern R&B, is phenomenal: “I’m ready for the final pages / Kiss goodbye to all my earthly cages / I’m climbing up the golden stairs” .

There are always concerns that ‘legacy’ acts of this stature play it safe, exploiting their cultural footprint to flog tickets and reissues – not the case here. ‘Memento Mori’ actually poses somewhat of a hurdle to overcome as Depeche Mode kick off their massive world tour this summer: when the songs are this strong, how many classics can they cut out to do these new ones justice? ‘People Are Good’ has an iron-clad case, its stadium-shaking bass and beats ready to hold its place next to 1990 hit ‘Enjoy The Silence’; ‘Before We Drown’s chugging industrial feel piles on the ‘Never Let Me Down’-sized theatrics.

To have an album of this quality after what the band have been through may seem miraculous, but Depeche Mode have always turned turmoil, tension and life’s darker moments into magic. ‘Memento Mori’ is comfortably their best album this side of the millennium, and, most importantly, a testament to creativity and friendship. The music world is richer for it.

Depeche Mode, Still Mourning, Return With Tour and New Album ‘Memento Mori’

By Kory Grow

During the peak of the pandemic, Depeche Mode ‘s members found themselves simultaneously making sense of Covid’s widespread loss while trying to appreciate life in the moment. Those two themes kept popping up when frontman Dave Gahan and singer and multi-instrumentalist Martin Gore were writing lyrics for what would become their 15th album. They embraced this idea by calling the album Memento Mori .

“The direct translation [for ‘memento mori’] is, ‘Remember that you must die,'” Gahan says via phone from Berlin, a few days before the band’s Tuesday press conference announcing Memento Mori . “A lot of the songs are going into that place of reminding ourselves that our time is fleeting, and you got to make the best of it — in a positive way.” Gore says he first heard the Latin phrase from a friend. “I just thought, ‘What a great album title for the songs that had been written already,'” he says.

Before they could get in the studio, though, the title took on far greater meaning for Gahan and Gore. On May 26, Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, who co-founded Depeche Mode and played synthesizers and bass in the group since 1980, died naturally of an aortic dissection. Did they second-guess the title after Fletch’s death? “I think it cemented it, if anything,” Gore says.

“Obviously, everybody will think that all of the songs were quickly written after Andy died,” Gore continues. “But everything was planned and ready to go. Unfortunately, Andy passed away when he was really looking forward to getting started with us. So I like the idea of ‘memento mori’ in a more positive way, in a ‘Live each day and make the most of your time here.'”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Even now, the two musicians are still making sense of their bandmate’s absence. “You don’t always get to say goodbye,” Gahan says. “With this, it was just one of those things where all of a sudden, Martin and I are sitting in a pew in a church together, and Fletch is not here anymore, just like that.”

“It’s obviously really hard to lose your closest friend,” Gore says. “Andy was there with me from way before the band and I feel like he was the one in the trenches with me the whole way. So it’s very tough.”

But Gore feels his bandmate would have wanted Depeche Mode to continue. “He was always seen as the glue of the band,” he says. “It would’ve been unthinkable for him to think that his death would’ve caused the end of the band.”

Watch chvrches' lauren mayberry cover depeche mode’s ‘personal jesus’, johnny marr previews new compilation album with single 'somewhere'.

Gahan and Gore didn’t see each other face to face to work on the album until July. The singer feels that if Fletch were working on the album, he’d have joked, “Can we just stop talking about death?” “I missed that in the studio,” the singer says, “and I know Martin did, too. We felt like he was still there with us.”

The group opened the Berlin event with a short montage, showing close-ups of music gear as echoey, undeniably Depeche Mode music plays in the background. The soundtrack had a throbbing, fuzzy synth bass line and operatic vocals. Eventually, the camera pulled out to show the musicians together in the studio. Eventually, Gahan’s voice enters and he sings, “We know we’ll be ghosts again.”

Neither Gahan nor Gore feel ready to name any of Memento Mori’s song titles — days before the Berlin event, they’re not even quite sure what the final titles are for the musical selections they’re playing — but they say the structure of the album as a whole came together naturally. “To me, it’s got a cinematic quality to it,” Gahan says. “It takes you on a bit of a trip, starting in a place where we’re like, ‘This is my world,’ and ending with, ‘How do I make the most of it?'” The music, Gahan says, sounds melancholy but it’s also braided with hope and joy. The record will likely feature 12 songs with a few saved over as extras for a deluxe edition.

When asked in Berlin if the band will be paying tribute to Fletch on the tour, Gahan said the group was still figuring it out but had zeroed in on some of Fletch’s favorite Depeche Mode songs. “He’ll be there in spirit, I’m sure, judging us,” he said with a laugh.

In another light moment, a journalist asked if the band would ever consider doing an “unplugged” tour. “We can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band,” Gahan said, chuckling. Gore added, “We can try it with battery packs or something.”

In an unusual move for Depeche Mode, the group will start its Memento Mori tour in North America instead of Europe. “I can’t remember the last time we started in America, if we ever have,” Gore says. “I’m sure we did at some point, but it just seemed like something different to do.” (The European leg will begin May 16. Some of the venues the group next year will play include Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, Twickenham Stadium and the Stade de France.) The band will return to North America in Sept. 2023 for another round of 29 arena shows.

Until then, they will press forward while continuing to grieve their friend and bandmate’s death. “It was very odd coming to Berlin and coming into a hotel where we have been with Andy many times, and just seeing the bar where we’d often seen sitting,” Gore says. “That was a bit of a reality check. Everything that we’re doing from this point forward is different, so we just have to put our heads down and do the best we can.”

Neu in der Setlist "Behind The Wheel"

Der Song „Behind The Wheel“ (Setlist Position 16) wurde neu ins Programm mit aufgenommen am 27.01.2024 in London. Austausch mit „World In My Eyes“

Mega… hoffentlich auch in Berlin am 20.02. Behind the wheel – love it !!!

Tour Premiere "Somebody" von Martin Gore

Zum 1. Mal während der Memento Mori World Tour singt Martin Gore „Somebody“ (Setlist Position 12) am 27.01.2024 in London

Absolute Premiere "Before We Drown"

Absolute Premiere zum 1. Mal live „Before We Drown“ (Setlist Position 10) am 27.01.2024 in London

Dressed in Black

Am 28.10.2023 wurde in New York „Dressed in Black“ von Martin gesungen anstatt „Soul with me“.

es spielt doch keine Rolle, wenn ein Song getauscht wird. Eventuell wäre es gut aufgrund der aktuellen Situation auf der Welt mal wieder people are people mit auf die Set List zu nehmen.

Abänderung der Setlist

In Brooklyn (New York) am 21.10.2023 wurde „Sister of Night“ mit „Policy of Truth“ getauscht. Für „Wrong“ wurde Black Celebration“ gespielt.

oslo 2 tickets

verkaufe hier leider die 2 tickets im wunderschönen oslo,für nur stk.55€,innenraum,gekauft bei ticketmaster

Wenn es ein Wunschkonzert wäre...

…würde ich mir „Puppets“, „Photographic“ und „Soothe my soul“ wünschen und dafür „I feel you“, „Sister of night“ und „Wrong“ rausnehmen. Das Konzert in Frankfurt ist mir krankheitsbedingt durch die Lappen gegangen (300 Euro in den Sand gesetzt. ;-( ), hoffe, ich habe im April in Köln mehr Glück. Freue mich auf jeden Fall. Über „But not tonight“ würde ich mich auf jeden Fall auch sehr freuen.

Überraschungen

Ich meinte Überraschungen, es fehlte das r in der Mitte.

But not Tonight...

Sie haben in Bologna „But Not Tonight“ gespielt ?

They have, without "?"

But not tonight.

Dank Martin gibt es doch ein paar Überaschungen. Erst Shake the Disease, dann Strange Love und jetzt mein Favorit But Not Tonight.
