Malaga Metro Guide: Tickets, Maps, and Using the Metro

Malaga metro map – stations and ticket guide.

consortium travel card malaga

The Malaga metro is a convenient and affordable way to get around Malaga city. This guide provides everything you need to know about riding the Malaga metro system, including how to buy tickets, maps of the network, and tips for using the metro as a tourist.

Overview of Malaga Metro

Malaga’s metro system is operated by Metro de Málaga and it’s pretty straightforward because it has just one line with 23 stations. This line stretches from Malaga Airport in the west all the way to Rincón de la Victoria in the east, making stops at important places like the historic centre, the main train station , and popular beach areas. Trains are pretty frequent, coming around every 10 minutes, and they run from early morning at 6 AM until midnight. If you’re looking to visit some of the city’s top attractions like the Picasso Museum , the Alcazaba, or Malagueta Beach, the metro is a quick and convenient way to get around.

Malaga Metro Tickets and Fares

To use the metro it is recommended to purchase/use a Metro Malaga Rechargeable Card, also known as Tarjeta Monedero de Metro de Málaga.

With a cost of €0.82 per journey, it offers a cheaper fare compared to the Single Journey Ticket priced at €1.35.

If you’re transferring from a bus, the fare further drops to €0.66.

This card can be topped up to €20 at metro station vending machines, and there’s a minimum top-up of €5. You only need one card per group (you can share the usage).

Where to Buy Malaga Metro Tickets

Metro tickets can be purchased:

  • Ticket machines – Located at all stations. Accept coins, bills, and credit/debit cards.
  • Station offices – Purchase from staff with cash or card.
  • Tobacco shops – Many sell metro tickets and cards around the city. Look for brown “Tabacos” sign.
  • Malaga Travel Card – Tourist card including metro access. Buy at info booths.
  • Online App – You can now also purchase tickets via the app. For more information visit the Official Malaga Metro Website .

Validate paper tickets at the gates or validators before boarding trains.

Malaga Metro Routes

The Málaga Metro system has two lines: Line 1 (L1) and Line 2 (L2).

The western section of the metro from Malaga Airport to El Palo offers fast transportation from the airport to the city centre. Key stops include Marina, Centro-Alameda for the historic core, and El Palo if heading to Malaga’s eastern beaches.

The central metro section from El Palo to Guadalmedina provides access to top attractions like El Perchel for the Picasso Museum , Atarazanas for Malaga Cathedra l and Alcazaba, and the port at Malaga Cruise Terminal. Walk or transfer to buses at Centro-Alameda for Old Town sites.

Riding east from Guadalmedina, the metro is useful for reaching the city’s university campuses including El Ejido for the Tech campus and Estación de Goleta for the Teatinos campus. Farther east at Rincón de la Victoria, the oceanfront makes a perfect day trip destination.

Malaga Metro Tips for Visitors

  • Purchase tickets and load multi-ride cards at the airport when you arrive to have them ready.
  • Validate paper tickets before every journey – they are not valid if not stamped.
  • Metro stops are signed at street level – look for red M with circle.
  • Bring coins and small bills as ticket machines only accept coins and notes under €20.
  • Get return tickets if staying within the same zone to avoid multiple purchases.
  • Beware pickpockets during crowded rush hours. Keep valuables secure.

One travel card will soon cover local buses, metro and trains in Malaga and nearby towns

The card issued by the consorcio de transportes will be valid for local cercanías train lines with discounted fares later this year.

Passengers will be able to use the same travel card on all local public transport services in Malaga and surrounding towns before the end of this year.

The local Cercanías train lines are to be added to the services already included in the card issued by the Malaga transport consortium (Consorcio de Transportes), which covers the city and 13 other nearby towns.

Currently, consortium cards can only be used for the local trains as a means of payment at ticket machines and the price is the same as the general fare.

In Cadiz province, however, a pilot scheme has been running since June, thanks to the agreement between the regional government, responsible for each province's transport consortium, and rail operator Renfe. There the train fares are the same as those of the rest of the local public transport.

Latest statistics for Malaga show that the consortium card was used 11.84 million times in 2022, while the Cercanías closed the year with 11.26 million travellers.

In order for the single travel card to be extended to the two Cercanías train lines (Malaga-Fuengirola and Malaga-Álora), the access turnstiles and ticket office and machines at all stations must first be adapted to enable the use of the consortium card.

Expand coverage

As well as the incorporating the Cercanías rail service, the Malaga consortium wants to expand its coverage to all municipalities located less than an hour by road from Malaga city, within an area framed by Antequera, Marbella and Vélez-Málaga. They expect this will begin to materialise in the middle of this year, as Antequera, Fuengirola, Coín, Valle de Abdalajís and Riogordo join the city and 13 towns that are already part of this network (Malaga, Mijas, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Rincón de la Victoria, Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Cártama, Pizarra, Almogía, Casabermeja, Colmenar, Totalán and Álora).

What does this mean for passengers? Firstly, a reduction in cost, with an average saving of 30% over a standard single fare journey. Secondly, the comfort of being able to use the transport card across multiple municipalities. At the moment, it includes local and interurban buses and the Malaga metro.

Hi! Can you purchase a green Consortium travel card at the airport, or maybe online through an app? Thanks in advance!

' class=

There is a bus kiosk outside the arrivals hall across the concourse. You can buy one there.

Perfect, thanks for your help!!

That's an idea rather than than buy in Torremolinos where I'm staying, I assume it's the same green card as there covering the buses starting there and the T1/2.

consortium travel card malaga

Yes Joe that's the one you will need..x

consortium travel card malaga

Easy place to top up your card on arrival as well.

The Green Consortium Card will not cross over to the Urban L 1-2 bus in Torremolinos , only the M prefix buses ** as far as I know

L1 & L2 buses are no more.

They have been replaced by Portillo operated services T1 & T2. Both green and red bus cards are accepted on these routes.

Okay thanks for the heads up AM

This numpty waited at the Battery Park bus stop for a red L1 bus a couple of weeks ago.

It never came, but we sat there and watched a white & blue Portillo T1 bus go past before I realised it was the one that we should have got on!

Geographically speaking, the Consortium includes the towns of Málaga, Mijas, Benalmádena, Rincón de la Victoria, Alhaurín de la Torre, Alhaurín el Grande, Cártama, Pizarra, Almogía, Colmenar, Casabermeja, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Álora, Coín, Villanueva de la Concepción, Valle de Abdalajís, Riogordo y Antequera.

consortium travel card malaga

The Consortium’s ticket system is based on fare zones. This means that the fare paid by the passenger is calculated according to the number of crossing fare zones made during a single journey ( fare crossing ).

e.g. Travelling from Malaga (zone A) to Colmenar (zone C), involves two changes of zone (from A to B and from B to C), so this is considered a 2 fare crossing journey.

Some special bus services provided by the Consortium have their own fares and are not governed by the zone system.

Our integrated fare system includes:

  • Over 80 long-distance bus services within the Metropolitan area.
  • Local bus services in Malaga, Alhaurin de la Torre, Benalmadena, Rincon de la Victoria and Torremolinos.
  • On underground trains in Malaga
  • The travel card can also be used on other means of transport – see the section entitled Tranport Tickets for details.

In my city we have multi-trip (10-trip) cards that can be used by a group of people (up to 10, obviously, unless using 2 cards), and it's perfectly simple when taking the metro: one person stands next to the gate and scans the card once to open it for the first person, who goes through; then again for the next, and so on, and finally for themselves. In my city, it's similar for buses but in Malaga you have to state your (group's) destination to the driver before putting the card on the reader, so you would also have to say for how many persons (so it's clear how many times you are scanning for that destination); and you need to scan the card as many times as you are in the group, so that each one receives a ticket. ("On boarding the bus, passengers must inform the driver of their destination before placing the card in front of the reader, which will automatically charge the price of the fare in accordance with the fare crossings for which the card has been configured. It will also issue a ticket indicating the cost of the fare and the time limit within which the passenger will enjoy a discounted second fare if transfers.")

In fact, the zoning system must limit the flexibility offered by the travel card as it can only cover trips of the same number of zones, at any one time ("The card is configured for the type of journey most frequently made by the holder (0, 1, 2 or 3 fare crossings)"). That is fine for someone making the same trip frequently, e.g. commuter, but not so useful for tourists making trips of different lengths - although you can reconfigure the card at intervals.

consortium travel card malaga

You can purchase a card at both bus stations, i.e. port or maria zambrana.

The limit is 15 people per card or three minutes time at the ticket machine.

AS discribed you tell the driver your destination and how many using the card. The machine tells you to withdraw the card and then replace for the next ticket, many times the driver will do it for you as if you return the card to the reader to fast it will crash the machine.

You get a ticket for each passenger and the last ticket also tells you the funds still available on your card, (you down load money on to the card, I think 10 euros minimum at the first loading). You can transfer on the net work provided within the time span printed on the ticket

Many thanks, that's very useful
