If you don't have a REAL ID, which is the small gold star in the upper right corner of your driver's license, you'll want to get one soon.

Beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers who are 18 and older will need a REAL ID or their passport to board domestic flights and access certain federal buildings.

"A REAL ID is basically an extra vetted identification card," said Dan Velez, TSA spokesperson for New England. "It stems back to the 9/11 attacks."

Velez joined other airport leaders and Connecticut's Department of Motor Vehicles at Bradley International Airport Thursday morning to talk about the upcoming deadline, which was pushed back a couple times due to the pandemic.

Connecticut's TSA Federal Security Director William Csontos says it's an effort led by the federal government to increase safety and security.

"The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists' ability to evade detection by using fraudulent IDs," said Csontos.

Since May 8, TSA officers at Bradley have been passing out fliers to any travelers with a non-REAL ID. We spoke to a woman who was handed one of those slips before she got to her gate.

"I'm just going to do it because it needs to be done," said Keontae Pugh, of Richmond, Virginia.

Luis Galdamez, who was in Connecticut for his daughter's U.S. Coast Guard graduation, says he has a REAL ID.

"I travel often, and so I wanted to be able to...streamline. I didn't want to have any problems," said Galdamez.

According to Connecticut's Department of Motor Vehicles, about 70% of Connecticut license holders have a REAL ID. Commissioner Tony Guerra says that's about 1.7 million people, but he wants to increase this number.

"We at the DMV are trying to make it very simple for everybody out there to get their REAL ID," said Guerra.

To get a REAL ID star, you can go through AAA or your local DMV office with the following documents:

  • 1 proof of identification, such as passport or U.S. birth certificate
  • 2 proofs of CT residency
  • Proof of legal presence for non-U.S. citizens
  • Social Security card
  • Current driver's license if you're looking to exchange one issued by another state

"It's probably going to take about two or three weeks to get that license because of the verifications that we need to do," said Guerra.

REAL ID in Connecticut: Requirements & What to Know

From May 3, 2023, any Connecticut resident wishing to fly anywhere in the US, visit federal facilities, or a military base should have a REAL ID license or a US passport.

A REAL ID is a verified driver’s license or identification card with a gold star in the top right corner. It is a federal requirement passed by Congress in 2005. It primarily acts as a counterterrorism measure.

Here’s what you should know about CT REAL ID.

What is a REAL ID?

REAL ID is a post 9/11 federal requirement for state-issued driver licenses and IDs to combat fraud and forgery. It sets higher security protocols that prevent unauthorized copying or alteration of identity documents.

You need this new form of identification to travel by air and visit federal facilities like courthouses and military bases.

The REAL ID concept was an adoption of the 9/11 Commission recommendation . Initially, some states opposed this requirement, but currently, all states are on board.

Connecticut is among the states that comply with this federal requirement.

So, if you’re in Connecticut, you probably have a CT verified driver’s license. This state began complying with this law way back in 2011. Identity verification mainly targets first-time applicants and those renewing their licenses or ID cards.

Who Needs a REAL ID?

You need a REAL ID if you’re a US resident who lacks a passport and frequently:

  • Boards airplanes for domestic travel
  • Visits federal facilities
  • Visits military bases

Getting identity verification in CT is optional. You don’t require a REAL ID-compliant license if you already have:

  • A valid US passport
  • An enhanced driver’s license CT
  • A DHS Trusted Traveler Card

If you’re a frequent air traveler, you need to check the Transportation Security Administration ‘s page to determine alternative documents you can use.

You may survive without a REAL ID if you rarely board planes or don’t visit government facilities.

You still need your CT license and ID for state identification. However, the standard CT driver’s license now has a “Not for Federal Identification” disclaimer at the top.

Who is Eligible for REAL ID?

REAL ID is available to US citizens and permanent residents.

A certified copy of a US birth certificate or a valid US passport is sufficient proof of US citizenship.

Permanent residents might need valid permanent resident cards (like green cards) to show lawful existence in the US.

You can’t issue a REAL ID if you only have a Drive Only license .

What Documents do you Require?

If you’re a CT resident, you should apply for a CT REAL ID through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Of course, you should bring relevant documents.

Below are CT DMV ID requirements.

  • Two proofs of Connecticut residency: They could be utility bills, bank statements, or similar documents. The dates must be within 90 days.
  • Proof of identity or legal residence: You need a US passport, US birth certificate, or a permanent resident card.
  • Social security card.

If you changed your name at any point, you’d need to provide documentation of the change. Court orders and marriage certificates are some of the documents that support a name change.

Steps of Getting a REAL ID in CT

Getting a REAL ID is straightforward. Here are the steps you ought to follow.

Step 1: Gather Documents

So, what do you need for a verified license in CT? As mentioned earlier, you require at least three different documents.

You should provide a primary form of identification, a secondary form of identification (social security card), and proof of residency in Connecticut.

Name-change documentation might be necessary if your current name differs from the name on your birth certificate.

You may require your current driver’s license if you obtained it from another state.

If you are a non-citizen, you must bring along documents that establish your legal presence in the US.

Ensure you have these documents before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Visit a DMV or Partner Location

The next step is bringing your documents to a CT DMV office or any partner office. First-time license/ID applicants must apply for a REAL ID at a full-service DMV location .

Remember that you need to make in-person visits to these offices. Ensure you make an appointment before visiting.

You’ll find DMV hub offices in the following locations.

  • Willimantic
  • Wethersfield
  • Old Saybrook

Partner offices like DMV Express also process verified driver’s licenses and ID cards. You’ll find such offices in:

  • Glastonbury
  • Southington
  • North Haven
  • West Hartford

Step 3: Get Your REAL ID

Once you submit the necessary documents, the DMV office will verify your identity, social security number, name changes, and CT residency. Non-US citizens may be subject to verification using the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements Program .

In most cases, your REAL ID will be available via mail within 3-4 weeks. Make a follow-up if it doesn’t arrive within 60 days.

A gold star on a driver’s license means you’re verified.

This verification is a one-time review. You won’t undergo this process again unless there is a future change in the law.

How Much Does a CT REAL ID Cost?

If you aren’t renewing your license/ID card, you’ll pay a one-time $30 duplicate fee to get a REAL ID in Connecticut.

If you’re due for renewal, you’ll pay the regular CT renewal fees. The charges are:

  • $22.50 for a six-year ID card renewal
  • $72 for a six-year license renewal
  • $96 for an eight-year license renewal
  • $24 for a two-year renewal license (for persons aged 65 years or above)
  • $70 for a four-year license renewal (commercial driver’s license)

When Should I Get a REAL ID?

According to the Department of Homeland Security , they pushed the REAL ID enforcement deadline date forward to May 3, 2023 .

Despite the enforcement date being far off, getting a CT verified driver’s license early is advisable. You might encounter longer waits when you apply for a REAL ID towards 2023.

A CT REAL ID enables you to visit federal facilities and to board domestic flights. You have to visit CT’s DMV offices to make your license REAL ID compliant. Some of the vital requirements needed include a US birth certificate, a social security card, and proof of residency in Connecticut.

Residents of Connecticut will need a REAL ID to board an airplane starting October 2020

ct travel license

HARTFORD —  Do you have a star on your Connecticut driver’s license? If not, there’s still time to get your REAL ID-compliant driver’s license with that star on it. But it’s better to get it sooner, rather than later.

Connecticut residents who want to board an airplane for a domestic flight will soon need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license. If their driver’s license is not REAL ID-compliant, they will need another form of approved identification, such as a passport to board their flight or enter a secure federal facility or military base. The REAL ID driver’s license and identification card have a small star in the upper right corner to indicate they meet federal regulations that establish minimum security standards.

REAL ID goes into effect starting October 1, 2020.

CT Driver's License no REAL ID

“REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver licenses and identification cards,” says William Csontos, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Connecticut. “The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.”

Connecticut residents have the option to upgrade to a REAL ID if their license does not currently have the star or stick with an older standard driver’s license. However, a standard credential—without the star—will not be valid to board a domestic flight or to access secure federal facilities, including military bases and some federal offices. The standard Connecticut driver’s license will have the words “Not for Federal Identification” printed at the top.

“We knew it would take some time to implement REAL ID, so we were proactive and began in 2011. Now we are focusing on the 50 percent of our residents who are not yet verified by launching a statewide PSA campaign to help them understand what they need to do,” says Sibongile Magubane, Connecticut’s Commissioner for the Department of Motor Vehicles.

To get the REAL ID star, individuals will need to visit their local Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles office in person and bring certain documents to prove U.S. citizenship and Connecticut residency. This program is available at DMV offices, participating AAA locations, Milford and North Haven Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union Offices, Stamford (operated by the WorkPlace, Inc.) and West Haven City Hall.  Required documents include one proof of identity (passport or U.S. birth certificate), proof of legal presence for non-U.S. citizens, two proofs of Connecticut residency, your social security card (if you’ve been issued one) and a current driver’s license if you are applying to exchange one issued by another U.S. state.

Transportation Security Administration officers who staff the ticket document checking station at airports will not allow travelers into the checkpoint without a REAL ID-compliant license or another form of acceptable ID after October 1, 2020, because of a federal law (The REAL ID Act of 2005) that mandates that a REAL ID is needed for federal purposes.

“Information about REAL ID is now on display throughout the terminal reminding our passengers about the requirements and where to obtain further information,” said Kevin A. Dillon, A.A.E., Executive Director of the Connecticut Airport Authority. “We are pleased to be partnering with the TSA and the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles on this important effort to ensure that our passengers have proper identification and a smooth journey through Bradley International Airport.”

Travelers will start to notice new signs at airports nationwide to remind people that REAL ID-compliant licenses or other acceptable forms of ID, such as a valid passport, federal government PIV card or U.S. military ID, will be mandatory for air travel beginning on October 1, 2020, Csontos explained. “Critically important, on October 1, 2020, individuals who are unable to verify their identity will not be permitted to enter the TSA checkpoint and will not be allowed to fly,” he said.

Here's When CT Residents Will Need To Have Real ID To Take Domestic Flights

Connecticut residents planning to take a domestic flight are going to have to “get real" within the next nine months if they hope to board their plane.

Connecticut residents will soon need a REAL ID or enhanced driver's license to board domestic flights.

ct travel license

Beginning on Thursday, Oct. 1, a standard Connecticut driver’s license won’t be enough to get on even a domestic flight, and although that is months away, the DMV is encouraging residents to get ahead of the game. The upgraded, enhanced ID will feature a star in the upper-righthand corner.

The REAL ID will feature a star in the corner of the license. The REAL ID will also become the standard for entering federal facilities. The requirements came following recommendations by the 9/11 Commission.

The DMV has been encouraging area residents to start transitioning to the REAL ID, including the issuance of online promotion and mailing information. There have also been tables set up with information at prominent area airports in an effort to ensure residents have enough time to get the new ID.

According to a new study by the U.S. Travel Association, 57 percent of people said they were unaware of the October 2020 deadline for domestic air travel, with approximately 39 percent saying they currently have zero Real ID-compliant documents.

In order to obtain a REAL ID, one must go in person to the DMV with proof identity and proof of Connecticut residency. There is no additional fee. There is a $30 fee to get an enhanced license, which can be used in lieu of a passport to enter Canada, Mexico and some Carribean countries by land or sea.

TSA noted that residents can still utilize their passport to board flights.

"Anyone not wanting this verification can simply decline and renew their regular license or DMV-issued ID card. If someone declines, a valid U.S. passport can serve the same purpose as the verified license or ID card at federal screening checkpoints," officials said.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, they have been “working with states for years around REAL ID compliance and have provided technical assistance, grants, and other support to them. (They) are also providing more than two years advance notice of implementation with respect to domestic air travel to allow ample time for all states to achieve compliance, or for potential air travelers to acquire an alternate form of ID if their state does not comply with REAL ID.”

If a traveler cannot provide a REAL ID, they will not be permitted through the security checkpoint, TSA noted.

"Connecticut residents have the option to upgrade to a REAL ID if their license does not currently have the star or stick with an older standard driver’s license. However, a standard credential—without the star—will not be valid to board a flight or to access secure federal facilities, including military bases and some federal offices. The standard Connecticut driver’s license will have the words “Not for Federal Identification” printed at the top."

“REAL ID is available at all DMV offices statewide and we encourage you to get your new license or non-driver ID today, especially if you are renewing or applying for the first time,” a DMV spokesperson said in a statement. “Getting a new REAL ID requires an office visit, and we expect lines to grow as the deadline approaches. Don’t delay – get your REAL ID today.”

Complete details about the REAL ID from TSA can be found here .

Connecticut's real id deadline looms: have you been verified, your real id card, real id verified driver's license, or a passport will be required to fly domestically beginning may 3, 2023..

A REAL ID verified license looks like a regular driver's license, but airline security and the guard at the front desk will be looking for a gold star in the upper right of the document.

CONNECTICUT — The countdown clock continues to tick, and if you're waiting for the process to get a REAL ID in Connecticut to get any easier, it won't.

Is it important? Only if you like to move around. Your REAL ID card (or REAL ID verified driver's license) will be required to fly domestically beginning May 3, 2023. Residents will no longer be allowed to board flights or visit federal facilities and military bases with ordinary driver's licenses or ID cards on that date. Those who do not have a REAL ID will need a valid U.S. passport to fly within the country.

On the upside, you won't need a REAL ID-compliant license if you already have a state-issued ID card, a valid US passport, or a permanent resident card.

Find out what's happening in Across Connecticut with free, real-time updates from Patch.

A REAL ID verified license looks like a regular driver's license, but airline security and the guard at the front desk will be looking for a gold star in the upper right of the document (see sample above). A driver's license or ID card renewal is the same cost if your identity is verified or not. If you don’t need to renew a license and want to obtain a new verified license or REAL ID card, you’ll be charged a one-time $30 fee.

You will need to present two proofs of identity, and two different pieces of mail from two different sources to prove your home is located in Connecticut. Following the REAL ID Modernization Act and DMV policy, residents are no longer required to provide documentation of their Social Security Number when applying for a REAL ID. However, a Social Security card can still be used as part of identity verification.

Once you have all your docs in a row, you'll need to find the right DMV office nearest to you and set up an appointment with the DMV. If you have an online account with the state government, you can track the delivery of your new card like an Amazon package.

Why the sudden mobility crackdown? It's actually not new — President George W. Bush signed the REAL ID Act legislation in 2005. The law set forth federal requirements for standardizing state driver's licenses and ID cards. The REAL ID Act also tightens laws for immigrants to apply for asylum and waives regulations that interfere with constructing physical barriers at borders.

But you'll be hard-pressed to find legislation anywhere that raises more hackles across the entire political spectrum. Much of the criticism stems from the

Strange ideological bedfellows from the libertarian Cato Institute, immigrant- and civil-rights defender the American Civil Liberties Union , Christian-advocacy watchdog the American Center for Law & Justice , and Second Amendment protector Gun Owners of America have all come down against the REAL ID Act. Much of their criticism stems from the REAL ID Act's necessary creation of a national personal data storage system which would make government surveillance —not to mention grand scale identity theft — easier.

Supporters of the REAL ID Act, such as conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, dismiss the criticism and say that states will only be allowed to share data when validating someone's identity.

New Jersey Tells Trump’s Golf Clubs to Show They Deserve Liquor Licenses

The state said that former President Donald J. Trump’s felony convictions may mean he does not have the moral character to serve drinks.

New Jersey alcoholic beverage regulators on Friday ordered two of former President Donald J. Trump’s golf clubs to demonstrate why their liquor licenses should be renewed after he was found guilty of falsifying business records.

Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, Mr. Trump’s frequent retreat during his four years in office, and Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck will be subject to a July 19 hearing in Trenton, according to Kirstin Krueger, interim director of the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Mr. Trump’s felony convictions last month in a New York court “raise concerns as to whether this licensee remains qualified to hold said license,” Ms. Krueger wrote in letters to Donald J. Trump Jr., executive vice president of the Trump Organization. The former president, who is running against President Biden to reclaim the White House, has a direct interest in the licenses, the division found.

A lawyer for Mr. Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday afternoon.

A New York jury found Mr. Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to his cover-up of a sex scandal during his 2016 presidential run. The verdict, the first criminal conviction of an American president, made Mr. Trump a felon.

Ms. Krueger, in her letters, cited the division’s “discretion to deny an application based on a review of the applicant’s background and character.”

At the core of the New York case was a hush-money payment to a porn star, Stormy Daniels. Mr. Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, Michael D. Cohen, paid Ms. Daniels $130,000 to silence her story of a sexual encounter with Mr. Trump, who then falsified the records to conceal his repayment of Mr. Cohen.

New Jersey law will not grant liquor licenses to “any person who has been convicted of a crime of moral turpitude,” and applicants have the burden of evidence to prove that they are qualified.

Though Mr. Trump’s golf properties are private, the venues are available to nonmembers for weddings and other events. “Whether an intimate affair or lavish soiree, Trump National Golf Club, Colts Neck will provide the perfect atmosphere for your dream day,” the club’s website says. The Bedminster property, in the heart of New Jersey’s horse country, was a frequent getaway and the site of Mr. Trump’s 17-day vacation in 2017.

In addition to the two properties mentioned, Mr. Trump owns Trump National Golf Club Philadelphia in Pine Hill, a New Jersey suburb. That club’s municipally regulated license to sell bottles of alcohol was renewed by the borough on June 3, according to a statement from the office of state Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, who oversees the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

New Jersey has more than three dozen types of liquor licenses, some regulated by local government. Licenses like those in Bedminster and Colts Neck are subject to annual renewal with June 30 expirations.

The final judgment on whether to disqualify Mr. Trump from holding those licenses must wait for his sentencing on the felony cases on July 11, according to the statement from the attorney general. The clubs will be allowed to serve drinks until July 19 on an interim basis, it said.

Benjamin Protess contributed reporting.
